SMSgt Virgil A. Castro is the Superintendent, Maintenance Division, Nuclear Inspections Directorate, Department of the Air Force Inspection Agency, Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. As the Maintenance Division Superintendent, he is responsible for the execution and integration of Air Force Nuclear Inspection Core Teams overseeing five Major Graded Areas for the Department of Air Force Inspection Agency conducted Nuclear Surety Inspections. He ensures Maintenance Division Teams operate at maximum efficiency by governing the training and certification of subject-matter experts supporting the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during Nuclear Weapons Technical Inspections, comprising of three Major Command Inspector Generals. Additionally, he advises the Department of the Air Force Inspection Agency Commander on the selection and scope of oversight of MAJCOM-conducted Nuclear Surety Inspections to provide The Inspector General, Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and Secretary of the Air Force with an independent perspective of the safety, security and reliability of nuclear capable units. SMSgt Castro enlisted in the Air Force November 2002 as a Missile and Space Systems Maintainer. During his tenure in the Air Force, he has been stationed at four bases and held various technical and leadership positions at Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) units and at Headquarters 20th Air Force. SMSgt Castro has 19 years of ICBM knowledge and experience and performed duties as a Missile Maintenance Technician, Mechanical and Pneudraulics Team Chief, Evaluator and Numbered Air Force Lead. He has significant Joint Service experience and participated in several operations, exercises and deployed in direct support of Operations INHERENT RESOLVE and SPARTAN SHIELD.
