Speaker 1 (02:30):
Listen. It's a pleasure, man. I think what you've comprised
here with this book is something that is entertaining, but
it's also something that's going to be giving great wisdom
for each and every one of your readers. Here man
and listen, We're delighted to be the first point of
introduction at least for our listening audience to hopefully then
follow through with your book. Let's start off with the

(02:50):
ground floor to tell us a little bit more about yourself.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
Okay, I'm from Western Kentucky. I'm sixty three years young.
I've been working the underground coal mine in this for
forty five years. Bill loved doing that. And a little
over thirty one years ago, I gave my life to
Christ while fishing back fishing out of a bast boat
in the middle of Lake bark in western Kentucky, and
that event shifted my whole life. My story is that

(03:15):
over thirty one years ago I met a man I
fell in love with and I've never gotten over him
and his names the Lord Jesus Christ, and so in
that I've been walking with him again for a little
bit over thirty one years, been married thirty eight years
to my wife, Michelle. She's a retired school teacher, and
I have a daughter named Haley that we adopted at
the age of thirteen. She's actually twenty three now. And

(03:38):
we've just seen the goodness of God in our life
just through simple obedience to whatever He asked us to do.
It's been a great adventure. And so in doing that
during this time. It was actually in twenty eleven when
the Lord spoke to me to write a book and
you mentioned the God You're crazy. I wrote that one.
It was published October of last year. It took me
a few years, but finally did it then. And in

(04:00):
the midst of that, Benji, I had people using that
book to teach people how to hear the voice of God.
So the Lord spoke to me about writing this book,
The God who Spoke Still Speaks. Yeah, it's been a
great ride. I'm telling you, having the time of my life.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
I love that. Listen, we are we're delighted to be
hopping on that ride with your hair. Tell us a
little bit more about your book, okay.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
So in that so, whenever I wrote The God who
Spoke Still Speaks, I just truly believe that God's not
playing hide and seek from us. He created Adam and Eve,
and he walked in the cool of the day with
Adam and Eve in the gardens that have relationship. And
then after they spoiled that event, so to speak, he
dwelt in the wilderness as a fire by night, a

(04:44):
pillar of fire by night, and a cloud by day
with the children of Israel. And then he dwelt in
the tabernacle and the holiest of holies with them, and
then in the temple that Solomon built. And then Jesus come,
and the word is that you shall call him a Manuel,
meaning God with us. And then Jesus ascends to heaven
and acts, and then ten days later he sends back

(05:04):
the Holy Spirit who's been here ever since. So I
believe that God has always wanted to have relationship with mankind.
He built us for a relationship, and in doing so,
I don't think he's hiding from us, Benji. I think
that he wants to walk in relationship with us every day,
and he speaks in so many different various ways that

(05:26):
and you mentioned it when you first open up that
sometimes I think we don't catch where God is working
in our life. I tried to write it and keep
it simple, Benji, to where people can go, aha, you
know what that was the Lord there or I now
see one of the ways that he speaks or tries
to communicate with us. So that was my goal was
to keep it simple but yet in sincerity, so that

(05:48):
people could understand how to have a relationship with the
one who created them.

Speaker 1 (05:52):
I love the fact that you chose to use that
word simple, because that's going to perfectly tie into my
next question. Man, because the subtitle of your book sixteen
Simplistic Ways of how God still speaks and leads people
in everyday life. I don't think it was arbitrary, right.
I don't think it was by happenstance that you decided
to use that word simplistic. And I'm curious to see

(06:15):
why because I know that some people might see it
as implying something as overly simple, but when we talk
about our journey, it is anything but. So why did
you choose that word and how does embracing a more
simplistic approach actually protect us from over complicating.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
That's a good question, Benji. So I believe Christianity is simple.
It's a love relationship that God initiated everything. He does
is motivated by love. John three sixteen probably the most
well known Quota scriptureapter for God so loved the world
that he gave, and it's only begotten son, and so
everything's motivated by his love. So I believe that Christianity

(06:56):
is simply a love relationship. Love. He loved us. First,
we respond to that love with either a yes or
a no. And if we respond and yes, then He
fills our heart with his love through the person of
the Holy Spirit according to Romans five five. And then
we have the ability to love our neighbor as ourselves.
We first have to love ourself. We have to forgive ourself,

(07:17):
and then we can love our neighbor as ourself. And
anything outside of simplicity, religion is doing all the externals,
but not having the vibrant relationship with the Lord. Religion
is pretty much a bondage. We're relationship, a love relationship
sets us free to live a victorious life. Jesus said
that he comes to give us life, and that more

(07:38):
abundantly that's on this side of eternity, that's not whenever
we go home. So Elisha received a double portion from Elijah.
Jesus gave us something better an abundant life, a cup
that's always running over, it never runs out. And so
that is the simplicity of having a relationship with him,
hearing his voice and knowing how to respond to that,

(08:00):
and that's where our victory lines every day.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
So you're touching up on something that I think gets to,
if not the heart of the book, at least a
very crucial component. And maybe it's not so much in
this one specifically, but I know that you had mentioned
earlier on that your book, God You're Crazy. You were
getting a lot of feedback from people that utilize that
as a way of paraphrasing here because I can't remember

(08:26):
the exact terminology you used, but basically hearing God's voice
being able to recognize it. Now listen, man, I can't
tell you how many times I've had conversations with people
on this network, off the air, myself included, where it
feels like sometimes we're shouting into the void and we
know God is there for any believers out there, like

(08:47):
we know he's there, we feel his love, his warmth,
but sometimes hearing him is his voice is very low,
and we wanted to come through like a siren, almost
curious to though they're like your books. Your book mentions
how God speaks sometimes through things like cats. I jokingly

(09:08):
said potato gyps before. But it's one of those things
I say, Yeah, that stands out. Okay, just sounds a
little unconventional, but I'm here for it. Man, let's follow it.
How do you help readers navigate the line between a
genuine I guess a genuine discussion, or a genuine connection
with God and hearing his voice rather than simply seeing
patterns in every day randomness.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
Yeah, that's a good question. Benji, Jesus used parables of
natural things to speak to teach spiritual truth to his disciples,
and so God can take everything in our ordinary life,
their ordinary, everyday life, and he can use it to
speak to bring revelation to us. The cats. So Michelle
and I have a pet cat, and every morning when
I wake up, Benji, I put my feet on the floor,

(09:53):
she comes and rubs on me. I'll pick her up
and put her in my lap and she won't stay
there at about forty five seconds, no more than a minute,
and then she jumps down. And so wat's this. This
is when the Lord just made this real to me.
She knows that if she gives me love and I'll
just call it and worship so to speak. Okay, if
she loves and praises and gives me worship first, then

(10:14):
I go open up the cabinet, I give her food,
I give her fresh water, and then whenever she's finished eating,
I open up the back door where she can go
out on the screen, then back porch where it's safe.
But I will not open the next door to the outside,
which has danger. So what happened One day while she's
in my lap? The Lord just spoke to me. He said,

(10:35):
it's the same way with you. If you'll come to
me and love, adoration and worship, I will bring provision
for you. I'll bring protection for you. I'll open doors
that you can't open, and I will keep doors closed
that you don't need to go through. I'll lead you
and guide you. And that is just so simple to me.
I mean, I literally it was such a profound revelation, Denji.

(10:57):
But it was like, my gosh, how did I miss that?
Before you understand what I'm saying, It's right there the
whole time. One of my favorite things to take underground
when I worked underground was I love to eat tune
of fish sandwiches, and I always liked him with plain
lace potato chips. So one day I'm on second shift, Michelle,
my wife, could fix my lunch. She said, Oh, by

(11:18):
the way, we're out of potato chips. I know you
love potato chips. So on the way to the mine,
make sure you stopping and get you some potato chips.
I said, okay, of course I forgot. I forgot. We're
dropping down the slope of the mine and I remember,
all of a sudden, I remembered. I said, Lord, I
forgot my potato chips. Man, I love potato chips, That's
all I said. And that day, whenever it comes time

(11:40):
to eat lunch, I went to the power center what
we called the shack, opened up my bucket and getting
ready to eat, and the section for him, and the
boss walks up and he opens up his buckets. He goes,
would you look at that? And I go what? He goes,
my wife packed two bags of laths plain potato chips
in my bucket today, And he said, I don't know
why she did that. And he said, would you like
to have a bag? I said, I sure would, so

(12:04):
Benji in forty five years of cole mine, and that
never happened before that or since. So then again, I
didn't need a bag until that moment. And so it's
just the little things that you know, God, a lot
of times, Benji, people take to the Lord the big thing.
But if a sparrow doesn't fall without him knowing and caring,
then he cares even more soul for us. And even

(12:25):
the little things. It's just a little God wink that Hey,
I'm here, I'll never leave nor forsake you, and I'm
able to do the exceedingly abuddily above all. You could
ever ask her a thing, Just little things like that, love.

Speaker 1 (12:37):
That what comes to mind is won't he do it?
Won't he do?

Speaker 2 (12:42):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (12:42):
My goodness, absolutely yes, sir. People again over the check
out this, say Toddhill dot com. This is what you
need to add to your shelf. Get involved, man, This
is truly man. It's gonna help shift perspective or even
reinforce a p if you may already be carrying. But
one thing is certain. It starts with this book and

(13:04):
you got to add it to your shelf. My follow
up now side listen right there in this subtitle, Man,
we're sticking here for a second. Sixteen simplistic ways. Okay, well,
there's sixteen ways that are discussed in the book. I'm
curious which one of them do you find is most
often potentially overlooked or even dismissed.

Speaker 2 (13:23):
I would say probably alignment of circumstances. Did you know
in the Hebrew language there's no such thing as luck
nor coincidence? I did not because they didn't believe in it. Yeah. Yeah,
they didn't believe in that. And so as I look back,
a lot of times, we'll just see I've seen things
just line up people. I've seen people at the right time,

(13:43):
at the right moment. In fact, whenever I used to
be in sales, I would literally start my truck, I
lay my hands on my steering wheel, and I have
to say, Lord, you got me today. I need to
see these people. I need to know I need to
be there at the right time, at the right moment.
And it was just crazy, how I've put him first
and invited him in every aspect of my life, that

(14:04):
he would make things just line up and a lot
of people go just coincidential. That's just luck. In reality,
God has the ability to line things up. So it's
one of the things that a lot of times people
just overlook another one. Of course, dreams and visions. That's
part of it. I've done a lot of ministry through
dreams and through visions because God speaks to us that

(14:26):
way and the Old Testament. If someone had a dream,
then they look for someone to interpret the dream. The
New Testament, the new and better Covenant. The one who
gives the dream, the Holy Spirit living in us, has
ability to reveal that dream to us. We don't have
to go looking for someone. Now. I'm not saying that
God doesn't use other believers to help confirm some stuff

(14:46):
or maybe add tidbits to it, Benji, But God who
lives in us, the Holy Spirit in us, is enough
for the.

Speaker 1 (14:53):
Moment, John, as we close out of here, Man, I
think for anybody out there that's listening. And I was
thinking about addressing this as for the skeptics, but skeptic
just seems like too much of a negative connotation, So
I'm not even going to impose that. Just for someone
out there that is searching for their path, they're wanting

(15:14):
to embark upon this, Yeah, they know they can go
and purchase your book and that's going to be a
great start something, I of course advise, But since we
have you here, man, what is a first step, a
baby step that you would recommend to someone who is
saying to themselves like they want to hear God, but
they've never heard anything before and they don't even know
where to begin.

Speaker 2 (15:34):
One of my statements I think even in this book
is the supernatural is commonplace to the praying and obeying,
and it's only hearsay to all others. Well, the first
step is just having a conversation with the Lord, and
you don't have to use any special language. In fact,
two of the most powerful prayers I believe are number one,

(15:55):
Jesus help me. They're both three words, Jesus help me,
because that is putting dependence on him, and that's what
he wants. And if you do that, and if you
wait on him, because prayer is supposed to be dialogue,
not monologue, the same six letters to spell the words listen,
spell the word silent. We have to keep our mouth
shut to hear. So if we'll do that, then we'll

(16:19):
pray another prayer that'll be thank you Jesus, because he
does answer prayer. And so I'm not chasing a voice
from the Lord. Ninety five percent of what you'll ever
need in life comes straight from the scripture. The other
five percent personally, It'll come different ways, Okay, But what
I'm after is a simple love relationship with him, and

(16:42):
out of that he speaks, and I get to hear
his voice. And the more often that I spend time
with him, before long, I get to know his voice.
It's just like you and I being first or second
time here on the phone. If we talked every day
for the next week, the next time you called, if
I didn't have caller idea, I go, hey, Benji, how
are you now? We've spent time together and I know

(17:04):
your voice. And the Lord wants us to know his
voice and to know how he leaves us and how
he cares for us. So I would say, just get
along with you, get away, get alone. But it's out
of relationship. I'm not chasing the voice. I'm pursuing the
God of the universe with a heart of love. So

(17:24):
that would be the simplest way I could tell you.

Speaker 1 (17:27):
Todd, and it's I could listen.

Speaker 2 (17:28):
Man.

Speaker 1 (17:28):
I think it's a great piece of advice and one
that we should all adhere to, because I think the
big question at least that I'm receiving from all of this,
and that I know a lot of people are as well.
As The question is no longer if God speaks, but
it's how we're going to learn to listen. And as
you were talking, man, it's crazy how this happened, because

(17:51):
it almost was like my mother was in the room
with me and I could hear her voice and she
was saying to me, it is a common thing she
used to say when I was younger, is God gave
you two ears and one mouth for a reason? Well, okay,
it's like absolutely absolutely, But listen, man, your book, I
really do mean this like people it is. It's a

(18:14):
practical guide to churning that faith from a concept into
a daily conversation, and conversation truly being the ideal term here,
like he just said, and something that I wholeheartedly believe in.
And it leads to a story that I shared a
number of times in the past, and we don't need
to go into it in full detail, but I remember
I was at the beginning of my spiritual journey and

(18:34):
I was wondering how to speak to God and being
that I was someone that wasn't necessarily raised in the church.
I've always been a believer. I've dabbled in reading the
Bible myself, but it wasn't something that I was frequently
doing in that sense. So I felt like I wasn't
worthy to a degree, right, Like I couldn't spouse scripture.
And then it was almost like I can't talk to

(18:55):
him because I don't know the language in which to speak.
And I remember somebody very to me at the time
pointed out the fact that it's like Benji, God is
our father, and he don't care what you have to
say or how you go about saying it. Man, he
just wants to talk to you. He wants to hear
from you. And I think it perfectly aligns with the
concepts in this book. So people, I'm gonna turn it

(19:17):
back over to you. Remember it's Amazon, Toddhill dot com.
Purchase your copies, and don't just leave this interview inspired man,
leave it equipped wrap your copy. Start recognizing the divine
whispers in your very own story. Talk back, initiate that conversation. Man,

(19:39):
while you're at it, let's not forget God. You're crazy.
You're gonna wanna pick that one up too. Man, Head
on over there and take advantage of it. Tod, this
has been a delight. I really do mean that, man
an absolute pleasure. Thank you once again for being a
guest on People of Distinction.

Speaker 2 (19:53):
Thank you Benji thought it was awesome. Thanks you so much.
