Speaker 1 (00:02):
Do the intro. This is your baby man.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Okay, Well I'm so used to you fucking doing that.
The killers were fucking demented.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
Your paralyzed from the neck down because I didn't have
any duct tape or rope.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
And then he sticks the guy's head and a microwave.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
Somebody tried to mess with his daughter and dad killed everybody.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
If I'm putting the same shoes, I'm probably doing the
same thing.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Well, I wasn't gonna watch the radio one.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
I'm that's saying a lot considering that he ended up
getting the film band in the fucking New cag.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Fucking diabolical. Al Right, Welcome to another episode of Horror
Movie Monday Reviews with Tails, Shows and Taverns. So, uh, Rob,
I hope I picked a good one for this one.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Well, actually you picked it, but no, that's what I said.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
I said, I hope, I hope I picked a good one.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Uh. For what we do, it's very it was a
very fitting movie.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
See, And that's exactly what I said. Yeah, So we
reviewed twenty seventeen, the Ritual that's on Netflix.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Mm hmm.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
And it was one that I've tried to watch a
couple of times and I kept I would put it
on late at night and then fall asleep. Right. So yeah,
recently I was like, all right, I gotta I gotta
watch this whole whole movie. Sat down and watched the
whole thing and thought it was thought it was awesome,
and like you said, thought it was spot on for
what we do because it's a lot about hiking and
(01:47):
it's a horror movie.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Mm hm.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
And it's based on the twenty eleven novel of the
same name by Adam Adam Neville Neville Adam Neville.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Adam Neville. Okay, yeah, man, I liked it. I thought
it was dope.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
The movie starts off it's like a bunch of dude
It's like what five dudes.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Yeah, it's like five guys and they're out having a
few points. They're what English?
Speaker 3 (02:21):
Yes, And I'm going to get to something about that
in like thirty seconds.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Yeah, but uh so it's thirty guys. They're English. I
want to stay. They're in the UK somewhere I don't
know where.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
Yeah, they're out having they're out drinking, having a boy's night,
talking about doing a vacation, doing like a boy's vacation,
and they're talking about the other ones that they've been on.
I think they talked about like Vegas, Yeah, stuff like that,
going on different trips, and one of them keeps talking
about going on a hiking trip in Sweden and what's
(02:55):
basically the sweetish version of the Appalachian Trail. Yeah, so
let that speak for yourself. You know, when you think
about Appalachia, you know, what do you think of? Besides
awesome hiking and mountains, there's also monsters in the woods, right, yeah?
Speaker 2 (03:19):
And serial killers?
Speaker 1 (03:21):
Serial killers? Yeah, yeah, not too too much on the
Appalachian Trail. I know a lot of people like that
every year.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
But h I've heard stories of people disappearing on the at.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
There's a lot of there's a lot of stuff about
Appalachian that you don't want to message. You ever heard
the idea of like if you hear your name, if
you hear something in the woods calling your name, you know,
you didn't.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Never heard of that one.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
But something called my name in the middle of the
woods in the state I don't even live in, yep.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
I wouldn't say any attention to it. I would just
walk that, yeah, right, because that's just fucking creepy.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Yeah, that's the land of of whendygoes and skin walkers
and all kinds of other Native American legends the lore.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
You know, Well, they say the same thing about like
fishermen who work on fishing boats, that they're up like
three days three four days straight. Yeah, they think the
whole like phenomenon of mermaids. It was just like fishermen,
like sleep deprived and hallucinating.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
Yeah that makes sense.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
I've worked hand in hand with a lot of like
salty New Bedford fishermen. Yeah, they'll tell you after like
three four days of no sleep and like working your
ass off like you, they start to hallucinate.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Bro. They start to hear and see things that aren't real.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
We did that. I felt that rack a few times,
being sleep deprived from start to see ship that isn't there,
starting to have waking dreams essentially.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Dude, I thought I saw an elempit on the side
of the fucking road once.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
Yeah. So so anyways, the movie goes, they're they're drinking talking.
Two of them go to walk into a uh with
a liquor store and buy a bottle of bottle of
booze to keep the night going. Yep, And they walk
into a robbery in progress, and during the robbery, one
friend kind of SLINKs away and kind of hides and
(05:33):
the other one ends up dying. The one who was
talking about going on this Swedish Appalachian trail as the
one who ends up getting killed in the killed in
the robbery attempts.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Well because he gave him his wallet, he gave him
his watch, but he didn't want to give his wedding ring,
and they just whacked him in the face with a
machete and killed him.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Yeah. Well, the other guy was hiding behind a thing
and watching.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
Unfortunately, that part fucked me up because that happened right.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
And then it fast forward six months later.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
You see the guy who was involved with the robbery,
the one who.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Hit yeh, he gets out, he starts smoking a cigarette.
By the way, that's the guy that played in the
movie The Big Short.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
I don't know if he knew that or not, but yeah,
he's a really good actor. And then the kind of
the chubby guy with glasses who was blonde. He had
me confused.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
With the guy that got killed in the liquor store.
I'm like, whoa, I'm like, didn't that guy.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
Get killed in the liquor store, because he kind of
looked similar, you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
He did look a little like him, but yeah, it
was it was a different guy. So, yeah, that would
probably because that first section of the movie, that first
that first scene, it's very quick.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Very quick.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
I mean, it goes by, it goes by very quickly.
They're talking really fastly. You really have to pay tension
to understand how the story goes from being in a
robbery at a liquor store to being in the out
in the mountains in the next scene six months later.
You know, Yeah, you really got to listen to what
they're what they're talking about, and.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
They pretty much they do like a ceremonial toast to
their friend that is deceased.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
Yep, and kind of makes you think that's that's what
the ritual is, you know.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
Yeah, and then they one of the hikers, so it's
four guys total.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
Now one of the hikers badly sprains his neat.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Yeah, so and they still got a considerable amount of
hiking to do.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
Yeah. So what they're talking about is they got two
days if they stay on the mountaintops and like hike
the ridge around this forest. And they start debating on
whether or not they should just cut straight through the
forest to get to a town that's supposed to be
directly on the other side, and cut a day out
of their trip. Allegedly, Yeah, allegedly.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
So they call an audible and they decide to go
hike through the forest. They kind of, I don't want
to say they get lost, but they.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
They kind of they kind of get to a point
where they don't really know where they are.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
It starts raining really bad, and they stumble stumbled upon
an old like shack, like a house, cabin and midd
old woods.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
They find a Yeah, they find an old rundown locked
cabin or it was locked. They did. They broke in, right, Yeah,
they broke was locked. They broke in. They had seen
a room carved into a tree on the way in,
but kind of didn't pay any mind to it.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
Yeah, and it was like kind of like paganistic.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
Symbols carved on the trees, Yeah, which was very odd
and unsettling.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
Well, I was gonna say they didn't see that until
after that They spent the night in the house.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
So yeah, Yeah, they go inside the house. The house
is super creepy.
Speaker 3 (09:20):
There's like a stone like there's like a wooded furnace.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
Yeah, there's a bunch of weird Like there's a bunch
of weird stuff hanging on the ceiling that kind of
reminds you of the Blair Witch Project type stuff. And
then one of the guys, one of the guys goes
upstairs and he finds what looks like an altar with
what would you say the thing was that was.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
In there made of like like small sticks and straw.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
It was like it was like a decapitated human like
figure that was made with straw. But it wasn't just
a figure either. There was something in.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
It, Yeah, because they have like rotten feet coming out
of the bottom of it.
Speaker 1 (10:05):
Yeah, So it looked like some sort of altar. And
then so they all try to they try to get
some sleep because it's pouring rain. They got they're not
supposed to be there, They're supposed to be in town already.
They should have already. They they had to have got
lost because they said they were only going to take
the day to get there. And then the guy who
(10:28):
was in the liquor store with his buddy with the
one who was killed. The guy who was who was
in the liquor store starts having these vivid dreams about
being back in the liquor store. Essentially, yes, and he
has these dreams overnight. They scare the crap out of
When he wakes up, he's still he's still in the house,
but like everybody's somewhere else, everybody's freaking out. Everybody wakes
(10:51):
up at the same time. And one of the guys
is up in the room with the with the altar
with the humanoid alt naked praying to it.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
And then the guy who had the nightmare about the
liquor store has some sort of weird like branding on
his chest. He had it was like five dots or something. Yep,
but something while he was asleep branded him. At night,
one of the other guys pissed himself, and I don't
(11:29):
know exactly what happened at the chubby guy with glasses
who hurt his knees.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
Something weird happened to him too.
Speaker 1 (11:35):
Wasn't he outside or something?
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Yes, he was.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
He wasn't even in the house anymore.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
Yeah, he was. He was out. He he woke up
outside like significantly freaked out.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
And so they all wake up to in all the
trees around the cabin, all.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
Of them have ruins carved into him from where you
can see it from the house. Have these like.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Very you know, I've been studying, you know, paganistic symbols
for the screenplay I'm writing. Yeah, every single one of
those things was a paganistic symbol.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
Oh yeah, yeah. So they decided to start moving, They
grab all their stuff, they head out again. Of course
they're heading into the woods. And I don't know about you,
but the forests that they were in I'm trying to
figure out. I's trying to figure out where they filmed it,
because the forest that they're in when they're filming is
absolutely creepy as shit. You can't see there's no way
(12:36):
you could see more than fifty feet in a direction.
As they're walking around these through these trees, and of
course they get essentially lost again.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
Well hold on, let's not go too far. So they're
lost in the.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
Woods, right, yep, And they stumble upon an old ten
that has like like the bushes and the grass is
kind of overgrown over it.
Speaker 1 (13:07):
Yeah. They do come across another campsite.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
And they start peeling the dirt in the in the
brush off and they find this, you know, full sized
tent and then they find like a wallet and it's
like a family picture of a husband, a wife, and
two children. And there's a credit card that was dated
(13:32):
back to like it expired in like nineteen eighty four.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
Yeah, do you remember that right?
Speaker 1 (13:40):
Remember that part?
Speaker 3 (13:43):
So that's fucking weird. They're really getting slowed down by.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
Their guy with the who strained his knee.
Speaker 1 (13:53):
Right, the knee injury guy. He's getting worse and worse
by the minute.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
Worse and worse by the minute.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
And then while they're hiking, they find what was it,
like a fucking moose or something.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
That was hung up in the trees, gutted and everything.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
Yeah, that was that was before they found the house.
Speaker 3 (14:16):
Actually, yeah, they found some sort of what was it,
like a moose or.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
Elk, like it was a big deer or whatever. It
was hanging open.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
A feat in the air.
Speaker 1 (14:35):
Ye.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
Yeah, that's very fucking creepy. They keep hiking again, night
falls again, and all right, so you want to take
it from there, because.
Speaker 1 (14:59):
So yeah, they they think they must be close to
the lodge because they find a path in the woods.
They start following this path and then they yeah, they
start following the path, they get they keep going, they
get way off course again, and they have to spend
(15:19):
they have to pitch their tents and spend another night
in these woods when they should have already been at
the town that they were going to.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
Mm hmm.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
And then they go yeah, and then they fall asleep
and they're wakened by they're they're woken up by one
of them.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
Screaming some sort of screaming beast.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
Yep, something is screaming. Note the guy named Phil is
screaming in the woods. A guy named Phil is screaming,
And the guy named Hutch is missing, and the tent
is completely ripped apart, so they go and try to
find it, and they start looking around for him, and
they find him similar to the elk up in the trees,
(16:06):
completely gutted, impaled up in the branches, like you said,
fifteen feet up off the ground.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
Yeah, and that's when shit gets real.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
Mm hmm yep. So they give him was it. The
next morning, they bury his friend.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
They bury their friend, bury your friend.
Speaker 1 (16:32):
Leave them there because.
Speaker 3 (16:34):
They can't drag them out, and they logic, guess, when
we get to town, will come back for him type
of thing.
Speaker 1 (16:40):
Yep. And they still get the guy with the busted
them knee mm hmm. And then at some point the
guy who is in the liquor store, I want to say,
is it Luke or Dumb? So Luke, Luke is the
main character. Dom is the dumb is the guy with
(17:01):
glasses with the knee injury. Mm hm And so yeah,
so the other guy, the other guy still was attacked
and dragged away.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
Yes, because the beast comes back and take takes them.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
And then Luke and Dom they find they find a village.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
After that, they find another cabin.
Speaker 3 (17:29):
But this one is is definitely more lived in, more situated,
and it's even believe it or not, creepier.
Speaker 2 (17:43):
Than the first one.
Speaker 1 (17:45):
Yeah, this is after they find a path lined with
torches that leads them to this cabin, to the small settlement.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
They go in there and they get knocked. They get
knocked upside the head, both.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
Of them, and then they wake up and they're tied
and chained and bound and I don't know what's like
an a basement.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
They're in like a basement, and two men come and
grab Dom and Dragon.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
M and then this really old wretched lady.
Speaker 3 (18:25):
She looks at Luke and pulls his shirt down and
sees the five point marking.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
And then shows pulls her own shirt down and shows
that she's got the same marking. Yes and so yeah, well,
and then a young woman starts to explain at some
point starts to explain what it is, what the creature is.
It's been chasing them and killing them mm hmm. And
(18:54):
it's it's essentially their god. It's a god. It's an
ancient pagan god that lives out in the world woods.
And she explains to him that the reason he's still
alive and the reason that he has that mark is
that he suffered such immense pain that the creature isn't
going to take him right as a sacrifice.
Speaker 2 (19:15):
They Yeah, they want him to become one of them.
Speaker 1 (19:18):
They want him to say in the village. Apparently everybody
else in the village has had some sort of terrible
pain in their life, and they they explained to him
that it gives him unnaturally long life.
Speaker 3 (19:30):
Now, did you notice to the blonde girl who explained
this to Luke looked very similar to the picture of
the wife and the wallet that they found.
Speaker 1 (19:43):
No, I didn't even put that together, she did. Okay, yes,
that makes sense. So you think she was taken when
they took the family.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
And they the family and she yes, I caught onto that.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (20:12):
So Don gets rough up, he gets brought back to
the basement.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
He tells Luke.
Speaker 3 (20:18):
He says, they're gonna sacrifice me to the fucking monster tonight.
Speaker 2 (20:22):
Yeah, he says, you're going to get out of here.
When you get out of here, tell my wife.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
I did everything I could to fight.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
Them off, but I just couldn't didn't make it.
Speaker 1 (20:34):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
And Luke's kind of like, you know, don't.
Speaker 3 (20:37):
Say that, Bubba, and he's like just fucking like he
knows it. He knows he's gonna die.
Speaker 1 (20:42):
Yeah, they've made it abundantly clear that he's gonna be
the next one sacrifice.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
So night starts to fall.
Speaker 3 (20:51):
The henchmen come in because there's a group now of
about what ten or fifteen of these fucking these widows.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
Yeah, there's a bunch of them.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
Men and women.
Speaker 3 (21:03):
They these these henchmen come in there, they grab them,
they tie them.
Speaker 2 (21:07):
To a tree, they do their weird.
Speaker 3 (21:09):
Little ritual where they chant whatever, and then they when
the beast starts coming, they all, you know, kneel and
kind of like turtle on the ground, like don't even
look look at it.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
Yeah, they all cover their eyes and don't make don't
make eye contact with them.
Speaker 3 (21:26):
And Dom is he gets this weird apparition where so I.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
Think, so, I think the creature actually when you look
at it, it makes you hallucinate your worst fears essentially,
you know what I mean, like when you make eye contact,
whether you can't look directly at the thing without it
looking back and kind of feeding you this perception, this
(21:53):
weird perception. So Dom starts to see his wife looking
for him, Yes, and so of course he's afraid because
he doesn't want her to be there. She's assuming he
knows he's gonna die.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
Mm hmm.
Speaker 1 (22:07):
And then you realize that, you know, she walks up
to him, and you realize that it's not her, it's
actually this creature that's got its little hands on his
head and is like feeding him this hallucination, yes, to
kind of draw the fear out of him. I assume
mm hm as a sacrifice before killing him.
Speaker 2 (22:28):
And then.
Speaker 3 (22:29):
Then it yokes him up and then he throws him
into a tree and then peals him and kills him.
Speaker 2 (22:37):
Now, while this is going on, Luke.
Speaker 3 (22:42):
As in the basement, fighting frantically to get his hands frae.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
He ends up. He breaks his thumb to get his
hand out of the knot.
Speaker 3 (22:50):
Yes, he breaks his thumb to get his hands out
of the knot. And so he goes upstairs. While the
ritual is taking place, he gets his and on a gun,
a ball action rifle.
Speaker 1 (23:04):
Yeah. He also walks into that room upstairs and sees
you remember what he saw when he walked in that room.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
I don't please refreshment.
Speaker 1 (23:14):
They were all these would look like mummified people up
in this room, all around him, and they were like murmuring. Oh,
And he realized that they were all still they were
all they were all rotting, and they were all mummified basically,
but they were all still alive. It was that the
creature keeps them alive, you know, even when they're not
(23:35):
able to stay fresh anymore. Essentially a lot like the
woman who was in that first house they went into. Yes,
So they start trying to they start making all kinds
of noises and ship trying to get to them, but
they're all they're all half rotted to bits. You know,
you can't go anywhere.
Speaker 3 (23:55):
But before he gets upstairs, he gets his hand on
a rifle. He shoots and kills two guys who try
to stop them, and then he grabs one of the
flaming torches and he goes upstairs and all those like
creepy mummified people, he sets them on fire and sets
the roof of the cabin on fire. And he runs
(24:22):
out of there and runs past the other.
Speaker 2 (24:28):
Weirdos that fucking worship this fucking beast, and.
Speaker 3 (24:36):
They they they try to track him down, and then
the beast turns on the people that worship him, if
you remember that, and starts killing them. Even when they
like kneel and do the they don't make the it's
it's furious now because they've had somebody an outlier, you know,
(24:59):
bre whatever fucking.
Speaker 2 (25:02):
Deal they made with them.
Speaker 3 (25:04):
Yeah, and he makes He gets to this place where
he's almost out of the woods, and he starts having
flashbacks again.
Speaker 1 (25:14):
Right because the creature motor is apparently its name, is
chasing after him and it's still using the hallucinations on him.
It's still able to force these hallucinations, so he's had
He keeps having flashbacks of being in the liquor store. Yes,
as he's trying to get away from it. That is correct,
(25:39):
But he does end up getting all the way out
of the forest and he gets to a point where
the creature can no longer go after him. The creature
is apparently it seems like it's stuck in the woods.
Speaker 2 (25:52):
Yeah, it can't, it can't leave the forest.
Speaker 1 (25:55):
So he gets so he gets to the edge of
the forest and he's able to actually get away.
Speaker 2 (26:01):
Yeah, and they just kind of leave it that. It's
the beasts screaming at him, and he's.
Speaker 3 (26:06):
Screaming back at it, and he's made it.
Speaker 2 (26:11):
He's survived, and.
Speaker 1 (26:13):
He gets out there and finds a paved road and
he's home free.
Speaker 2 (26:17):
And that's the movie. I thought it was cool.
Speaker 3 (26:23):
It was different, a lot of things left to your
own interpretation, not much explained, which sometimes in a horror
movie that's okay, you can kind of just put two.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
And two together. I'm cool with that. Good movie.
Speaker 3 (26:49):
I wouldn't necessarily call it great, look good.
Speaker 1 (26:55):
Yeah, it's definitely a good movie. I liked it.
Speaker 2 (26:58):
It's worth a watch.
Speaker 1 (27:01):
I like it. And it has to do with hiking,
fucking pagan gods like that.
Speaker 3 (27:05):
Yeah, I mean, for what we do, it was it
was the perfect pick.
Speaker 2 (27:13):
But yeah, it was pretty cool.
