ON TODAY'S SHOW
Sammy Chand's Wednesday show is day three of Dhurandhar Week — and today the focus widens out. With Saturday's Raw and Undekha extended cut now in front of the audience, Sammy reflects on what the cut added and what the franchise has proven about the role of music in Hindi cinema. The hour spans the chart and the catalog: Dhee's Tamil Vari Vari, Darshan Raval's Only Mine, the Panjabi MC classic Panj Lakh, three more Shashwat Sachdev productions — Gehra Hua with Arijit Singh, Main Aur Tu with Jasmine Sandlas, and Phir Se with Arijit Singh — plus Wazir Patar and Pav Dharia on Hassa Ni Hassa, Rawme Hooda's Total, Talwiinder and Push Kahlon on Miss Me With That, Karan Aujla and MerciBeats on Tom Fella, and a closing run of three chart-toppers — Diljit's Morni, Bangles by Sanju Rathod. Sammy interviews Reshma Dordi in a substantial conversation in the back half of the hour. Rohit from Know Gurbani drops in to preview his show. Plus Dr. Roy on Word On The Avenue and Doyeeta Das Gupta with the Artist Spotlight.FEATURED MUSIC

Speaker 10 (39:05):
Well listen, you know, as you know, I've been doing
this week long special on the movie itself. They're under
one end to the Original and the Revenge. You know
which one is your favorite?

Speaker 2 (39:15):
Chma.

Speaker 1 (39:18):
I think I will like number two. I just finished
seeing it. Because those who don't know it just came
out on Netflix two days ago and actually happened to
know and privileged to be a good friend of Lokistar,
who is the director of the Sitar's Brother and he's
also a producer on the movie. And he's here right

(39:39):
now and got to spend some time with him, has
some chi with him. So happy for him. He's such
a great guy. Congratulations to him and his family. They
really deserve it.

Speaker 10 (39:49):
Yeah, what an incredible accomplishment and just an incredible success.

Speaker 2 (39:54):
As I've been talking about here all week long.

Speaker 10 (39:57):
And you know, Richma, as we were talking about here,
our community has been, you know, evolving so much, and
I always attribute a lot of the growth to people
like yourself that have really taken on the initiative of
getting involved in spaces that really need a lot more
help and a lot more in terms of resources. And

(40:17):
of course this is your second time doing this with
the LA Department Mental Health Department there as far as
working with them on a program called Together We Can.
And you know, you've got this big event going on
on the thirtieth of May, really dedicate towards raising awareness
and bringing more resources to this much needed space of
helping folks in our South Asian space with help with

(40:41):
the mental health issues that they may be facing.

Speaker 2 (40:43):
Tell us about what you got going on and thank
you for doing this.

Speaker 1 (40:48):
Oh, this is an absolute pleasure for me.

Speaker 7 (40:50):
It is a labor of love.

Speaker 1 (40:52):
I am very thankful that I work with the La
County Department of Mental Health, which is the largest department
of mental health in the country. Actually, and the idea
is May is Mental Health Month, and we would like
to have a dialogue and destigmatize the conversation around mental health. Unfortunately,

(41:13):
it is still a stigma in many communities, including ours.
So let's talk about it and together we can do this.
That's why it's called together we can so that we
can bridge gaps, generational gaps, and kids can feel comfortable
coming to their parents and asking those hard questions whether
they're feeling down or someone of their friends circles has

(41:34):
come and asked them, Hey, I'm not feeling good. I
maybe want to end it all. They don't know what
to do and there shouldn't be a stigma. So the
parents that can have resources, the children can have resources. Similarly,
mental health doesn't discriminate with age, socioeconomic status. It can
happen to anyone, so they should not feel like they're alone.

(41:58):
So this event is all about talking about mental health
and destigmatizing it. And also a very big initiative is PEI,
which is preventatives early intervention. What can we do before
things get not so well? And so things like you know,
going out there playing sports, music, dance, cultural activities, arts, crafts,

(42:23):
all these are great ways to engage yourself mentally and
hopefully have a well balanced mental health. And again, if
we can engage in these activities, and that's what it's
all about. All day long, we're going to have fun
activities including performances, music, dance. We want to invite everyone.

(42:45):
This is absolutely free. It's absolutely free to everyone we'd
like to get involved together.

Speaker 15 (42:52):
We can.

Speaker 10 (42:54):
Of course as your work with Pearl Entertainment and working
with the LA City and you know, putting a grant
to help South Asians out there and as part of
the Take initiative, the LA initiative. This event must have
taken so much in terms of really putting together the community,

(43:14):
and I'm sure everybody's really stepping up and helping tell
us about that effort and tell us about the entire
community there. And I know as part of rockas Avenue
Radio's month long effort right here around mental health awareness
and activate your listening program. This has been a thing
for us, but tell us about the community as a
whole and what they've done to get around really galvanizing

(43:36):
around this effort that you're pushing.

Speaker 1 (43:39):
So one of the things I noticed, and I was
so happy to see over the years, how many resources
there actually are available to many of us from our community.
There's South Asian Networks and there's Sahara, there's SaHas. Also
there's different organizations for the Bangladeshi community, the Pakistani community.

(44:00):
This is open to everyone, but it's got to focus
on AAPI and AHE communities. And you know, there's also
LGBTQ plus aware organizations. So everyone is welcome to come
and have a booth here and give out the resources.
And it's so nice to see so many of these
organizations are coming forward and they do all do great work.

(44:23):
But hopefully this is one platformm where they can all
get together and show that we're united and we're taking action.
The initiative is take action, LA. Let's take actions and
be responsible for each other because we're all together in
this beautiful thing. Called life, and we all have to
have resources for those who may not be as fortunate

(44:46):
as we are and those who are underserved. So we're
working with the Senior Citizen Group. They're going to have
a fashion show. We're working with transportation companies to give
them transportation to count through and I want to use
this platform if you don't mind, rockis Avenue for If
anyone would like to get involved, please email us at

(45:07):
info at Pearlinc.

Speaker 9 (45:09):
Dot co.

Speaker 1 (45:09):
That's info at Pearl p E A R L Inc,

your gorgeous, beautiful, talented wife is one of my main
supporters as you are, along with many other of my
friends who are coming from all walks of life, and
they're spending so much time, energy and effort to put

(45:31):
this together. So really I'm not alone. It's it's a
nice community based program organized by the community, open to everyone.

Speaker 2 (45:42):
Love it, love it, make sure you show up.

Speaker 10 (45:44):
It's happening here Pierce College in Woodland Hills in California,

And tomorrow, I'm looking forward to having the band Indo
Fusion on the air with me. Awesome cover band and
they've been releasing some original music as well, and I
can't wait to talk to them. They're just a great
duo to brothers, and I think the third member, Radika,
the female vocalist, will also be joining us as well,

(57:42):
so I'm really looking forward to us. If you know
anything about him Indo Fusion, check them out. I N
d O f U z O N and I'm looking
forward to having them on tomorrow. And folks, if you
watched raw and and Deka this past weekend. I want
you to do something with me. Think back to the
scenes hit you the hardest, the moments that your chest tightened,

(58:03):
the moments you stopped scrolling, pause, the conversation in the
room and you just watched. I bet you the music
was doing more work than the picture in those moments.
Aditya Dar shot seven hours of footage in the theatrical version,
he had three hours and twenty minutes to tell a story.
In the extended cut, he had more time, and the

(58:26):
part he spent that extra time on, the part that
made the cut feel different, wasn't more action. It was
more music, more breathing room for the score, more space
for a song to actually carry a scene from one
emotional state to another. The cut isn't longer, the cut
is fuller. And tomorrow on the show, we count down
the top fifteen songs from across the Duology and the

(58:49):
extended cut, the soundtrack the way Aditya Dar finally got
to release it, the way the music was meant to
be heard.

Speaker 2 (58:55):
We'll have the voice of the Duology in the room.

Speaker 10 (58:58):
If you've seen it this past weekend, great, And if
you have not, you are now unnoticed. You have twenty
three hours before I see you again. Make sure you've
seen both the films before that.

Speaker 2 (59:11):
Have a great day.
