going to join us a little bit later on Valentine's
Day is Saturday, of course, and she kind of carried
on the tradition of a previous judge by doing what's
called these King of Hearts weddings marathon one wedding after another.
(02:29):
She's gonna be doing that on Friday. So she's going
to join us a little bit later on in the
show to talk about test. Welcome to the show now, Taylor,
Gi you director of communications for the Clay Center. How
you doing.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
I'm doing wonderful this morning.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Thank you for joining this morning. We had a little
we had to schedule on Friday, little family situation you
had to take care of. Hope all is well there, Oh,
all is great.
Speaker 5 (02:48):
Everyone knows well, the who has little ones, all the
bugs that are going around right now.
Speaker 4 (02:52):
So you know we're fighting through.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Well, it doesn't necessarily have to be the little ones
because this place the last couple of weeks has been
like a mass unit here. You know, Luckily I have
been okay because it's all the clean living I do,
so any of what's going on to the Clay Center.
So what do you gotta tell us.
Speaker 5 (03:07):
Is more so many things are going on at the
Clay Center. It is just a mad house in the
best way possible. Anyone who was at the Clay Center
this last weekend who got to experience the joy of
Disney's Frozen, the musical that the Charleston Light Opera gil
put On, really got to take in the joy. And
we joke that I took the marketing too far with
(03:27):
all this wonderfully cold and snowy weather we.
Speaker 6 (03:30):
Have and did.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Yeah, I was gonna say, did you have to go
that far? I mean, they don't really need to experience
it on the way there.
Speaker 5 (03:36):
Well, I mean I really just like to set the
scene fair enough, fair but no, we got some warm
and wild they're coming and we've got another weekend going
into Valentine's Day weekend a Frozen, So if you haven't
seen that yet, absolutely come on down We've got quite
a few shows coming up over the next couple of months.
We have obviously a wonderful production of The Harmonies of Hope,
(03:56):
which is done by Recovery Point West Virginia. They've got
Tommy Prime, Philip Bowen, John Ingram that's here at the
end of this month.
Speaker 4 (04:03):
That's going to be It's always wonderful.
Speaker 5 (04:04):
Every year, without a doubt, going to be another fantastic production.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
I do have a little something to tease. Okay, I can't.
Speaker 5 (04:11):
Say exactly what it is, but I'll say if you
are a fan of the band Chicago, maybe keep your
eyes and ears open on Monday, February twenty third. There
may be a special announcement. Maybe maybe, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
If you're a fan of Chicago.
Speaker 4 (04:29):
If you're a fan of the band Chicago, yeah, well.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Here's a little Chicago trivia. Because I got a head
full of nothing.
Speaker 7 (04:33):
You know.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
The original name of the band was Chicago Transit Authority.
I didn't know, and they got sued by the Chicago
Transit Authority and had to shorten their name. That's you
can you can you can use that. Feel free to again.
I got a head full of nothing, Okay, So but yeah,
I think it's an excited announcement and we'll be looking
forward to that on the twenty third, twenty third, Is
(04:54):
that what you said? Okay? Follow I guess you're what
social media? Website media?
Speaker 5 (04:58):
You can join our email list on our webs site,
the Claycenter dot org, or do you know, just maybe
hop in here and you here's something.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Okay, fair enough? Fair enough? All right? What day? The
twenty third is on a Monday?
Speaker 8 (05:10):
Right?
Speaker 2 (05:10):
All right? So so you wanna come back and tell
us that? Can you do that?
Speaker 8 (05:13):
All right?
Speaker 2 (05:13):

Corp dot net helping you understand your environment because what
(05:34):
you don't know can hurt you. How's the Clay Center
done overall with this winder that we've had. I was
talking to one of my coworkers earlier and I said,
it seems like this winter has gone on forever. However,
the meteorologist Brian Hughes will tell me that January was
actually underperforming as far as snow goes. It's just what
(05:55):
we had just stuck around forever. We're only two weeks.
It was only it seems like it was forever ago
when we had the ice storm follow us it. Actually
it was only like a little over two weeks ago,
it seems like. But how is the Clay Center done
getting through all this?
Speaker 5 (06:08):
Well, we have a really dedicated team. We have a
handful of our building management professionals who are out there
every days salting the sidewalks, shoveling, making sure that people
can get into.
Speaker 4 (06:20):
The building as easily as possible.
Speaker 5 (06:22):
I mean, we do everything in our power to make
sure we don't close the doors because we went to
Clay Center to always be an option for those especially
when you know you have a week of snow days
and the kids are itching to get out of the house.
You know, we went to the Clay Center to always
be an option for people to come inside, have something
fun to do with the kids, or you know, maybe
the parents just need or adults needed a reprieve from.
Speaker 4 (06:44):
Being the ouse.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
I saw one of the parents on social media posted
this thing when they were going back and forth between
remote learning whatever, And this is one of the days
when they were going to do the remote learning thing
in Kanawak County and somebody post and said, I'm sending
mind to school No matter what I mean, They're going
to go out to Just wait. Eventually somebody will opened
the door. Now that's how CPS gets involved, wet. We
don't want that to happen. But it's interesting that you
(07:06):
bring that up because I have talked to parents who
said that, while you know, schools may have been closed
or whatever, if the clay center was open and they
could safely get there, they brought their kids to a
clay center.
Speaker 9 (07:16):
Oh.
Speaker 5 (07:16):
Absolutely, And you know it's always a safety first. You know,
if you can't get out of your house, we don't
want you risking your life to come. We want to
see you, absolutely, but we never want you to risk
your safety and the safety of your family to come
down and see us. So if you're not able to
make it down today or the next day, you know
we will be here always.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
So what goes on on a regular basis at the
Clay Center, Okay, because we always talk about the special
shows and special events and so on and so forth.
But just on an average Wednesday in April, I'll just
throw it out there. When you don't have something quota,
I mean, you always have something going on, but just
on an average day, what can people see when they
come to Clay Center.
Speaker 5 (07:50):
Well, I mean there's always the joy of our traveling exhibits,
which another little teaser. We may or may not be
working on a little construction project to bring even more
traveling exhibit space, which means bigger exhibits, the ones that
you know that go to COSI and things like that,
you know, the big, the big ones. So that's something
(08:11):
that we may or may not be working on right now.
But we always have a traveling exhibit in our main
art gallery, a traveling exhibit down our main floor. We
have day to day programming. It varies day to day,
so always check our website. But we do programs like
Science Unleashed, which is little drop in workshops where you
get to make Arctic slime or Arctic slime arctics.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
If nothing else, that should be the name of a band.
I feel, oh, I like that Arctic slime. That's a
good one trademark that Ryan.
Speaker 5 (08:40):
I'm feeling like a funky vibe to it. Yeah, okay,
I think there's something cool there. We have our book
Bud story Time, which is, you know, our education team
sits down reads a book with our youngsters and it
does an arts and craft project afterwards. We have Storytime
Theater where our team puts on a little production in
the Mytown Theater downstairs and the kids get to play
(09:02):
along with the sound effects and the lights and so
it's a really fun set of programs that you know,
our education team works really hard on to make every
day something fun, something interesting that you'll be able to experience.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
And that's what we want people to take away from this. Again,
we're talking with Taylor gu who is the director of
communication for the Clay Center. There's always something going on there.
I know you just came off Carnival Carnival a couple
of weeks ago and that was a huge, huge fund
raising event there.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
Oh it was.
Speaker 5 (09:29):
Anyone who came was said it's the best carnival that
they've ever been to, and those who didn't come who
saw photos and videos online said, I can't believe I
missed it this year. It was one of the best.
I mean, we had food catered by ten ten. We
had some amazing artists that were performing. I mean, if
anyone that was on the main stage. I've never seen
(09:50):
quite so many people at carnival standing up and down, dancing,
singing along, banging their heads, I mean, of a variety
of ages. I mean it was it was truly fun evening.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
Where's the best place for people to follow along? I
know you're all over social media, but you want to
hit up a website we want to talk about you know,
get a couple of minutes leftter we want to talk
about the Friends of Clay I mean, that's a big
thing that you can do to support the arts. Just
talk about a little bit.
Speaker 4 (10:13):
Absolutely always.
Speaker 5 (10:14):
You can go to our Facebook that's primary source of
information for us. Also our website, the Claycenter dot org.
Everything and anything is posted on there. But if you're
wanting to take that next step and get further engaged,
I highly recommend you check out Friends of Clay Center.
Speaker 4 (10:28):
We have a Facebook page. You can learn more about
it on our website.
Speaker 5 (10:31):
It is a group of people who want to take
a step further, who want to be more involved. They
are the ones who helped organize and put together Carnival.
We're working next on an event in April called Jazz
and Jambalaya.
Speaker 4 (10:45):
It'll be April.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
You had me right there, you had me with Jambalaya.
Speaker 4 (10:49):
It's going to be out in our Sculpture Garden.
Speaker 5 (10:51):
We have an all female jazz group coming that's going
to be doing this amazing show. It's on a Saturday
night from seven to ten o'clock. I believe limited tickets
for that one. So that's something you're interested in, and
it's not why the same price point as Carnivals. If
maybe Carnival was a little bit out of your reach,
this one is going to be a good step down
(11:12):
from that. So it's truly a wonderful experience. In our
Friends of Clay members, they go above and beyond to
make sure that people have access to the Clay Center
and that they enjoy their timeline.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
Taylor, it's always a pleasure to have you on the show.
So you're making a return appearance, I understand now on
February the twenty third, right.
Speaker 5 (11:29):
Like I just kind of forced your yeah, yeah, just
the way I'm.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
Going to be coming back February twenty third, Dave, you
don't necessarily be here. I'll just take over the show,
so February twenty third, you'll have a big announced before
and you're gonna do it on this show, right, Absolutely,
all right, Taylor. Ge you the director of communications for
the Clay and appreciate you being here.
Speaker 4 (11:44):
Absolutely love to be here, all right.

Speaker 6 (14:36):
Good morning, Dave. Thanks for having me on.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
Thank you for being here. You uh making them through
the winter.
Speaker 6 (14:40):
Okay, I'm trying to early this winter. I said, I
don't want it to be fifty degrees in raining the
whole winter, and I regret that now.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
That's what I was just talking to Taylor about. It
seems like we've complained and complained about this winter being
so harsh. But if you will remember, we had that
snow in December and then it was kind of quiet
for a while, it was just cold, and then we
had it was it seems like it was like six
months ago, but it was only two weeks ago that
we had the snow and the ice. And it's just
because it's been so cold. It just won't go anywhere.
Speaker 6 (15:07):
It's very pretty. I'll give it that. I like looking
at it. But I was driving to Ohio to Ohio
University to where my daughter goes to school.
Speaker 2 (15:15):
I just couldn't get into Marshall.
Speaker 6 (15:16):
Hunh, that's right.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
I'm kidding, and I'm kidding, but.
Speaker 6 (15:19):
I was driving all the way there in that snowstorm
about ten thirty in the morning on I guess it
was Friday, Friday, Yeah, yeah, and it was pretty it
was pretty hairy.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
It actually got better as the day went on when
I left here and I got off the midday show
at three, and when I left here we had it
was like I mean, on the main roads. There was
no issue. It was a lot better than what it
would have been at you know, at twelve o'clock, like
like you experienced.
Speaker 6 (15:40):
Yeah, that wasn't that was a mistake.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
Done better there, Yeah, because thirty five it's in pretty
bad shape really.
Speaker 13 (15:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
All right, all right, So this Saturday is Valentine's Day
and you're going to be doing your King of Heart's weddings,
but you'll do it on Friday, of course. So tell
us about this for people that aren't familiar with it.
Speaker 6 (15:58):
Well, every year around thing around Valentine's Day, which we
try to do it on the fourteenth, it just happens
beyond a Saturday, and the courthouse is not open, so
that would require a whole lot of extra spending we
don't need to do. We are going to have it
on Friday. With a little bit of a twist. It's Friday,
the thirteenth, so we'll make it a lucky day instead
of an unlucky day.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
All right, So that'll the people that decide to get
all married up, that'll be their thing. And we get
married on Friday the thirteenth.
Speaker 6 (16:22):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
It was good luck or is the worst thing we
ever did, that's right.
Speaker 6 (16:26):
Hopefully it's good luck for everybody. We've already gotten a
ton of calls, and all it is is, if you
decide you want to get married on February thirteenth, you
just come on down to my office. You can call
my assistant Mindy three five seven zero three six seven
area code three or four if you want to make
an appointment, but we take walk ins. All you need
is a marriage license and we'll get you married up.
Speaker 2 (16:45):
So give for people that aren't familiar with this. And
you've done it, how many years have you done this time?
Speaker 6 (16:50):
This is my fifth year, your fifth year.
Speaker 2 (16:52):
Okay, And of course it started before you though. Talk
about the history behind.
Speaker 6 (16:55):
This, that's correct. So it was actually the brainchild of
Judge Charlie King, who I was assigned to a long
time ago, and he was a good mentor and a
good friend, and I thought he passed away obviously in
December of twenty twenty, and we all miss him very
much still, so this is a good way to remember
him and the ways that he was and to have
a good time.
Speaker 2 (17:16):
Yeah, and it's become quite the tradition. How many do
you remember off the top of your head, like how
many you did last year or what's the average that
you do?
Speaker 6 (17:24):
I actually don't remember.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
I wish I did.
Speaker 6 (17:25):
I thought about that while I was sitting in your
green room. But we have done probably the most we've
ever done, I think is fifteen couples. Okay, which is
a substantially long day because everyone comes in and I
let everyone who wants to bring family in. If you
want to bring pictures, photography, of course, we'll have it
decorated balloons by Birdie comes every year and does the decoration.
She will do it again this year, so it'll be
(17:46):
a little bit more special than just a regular courthouse wedding.
Speaker 2 (17:48):
Right again, we're talking with the judge of Mary Claire
Akers for Dave Allen showing five eighty live brought to
part by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds,
because of Avalentine's Day. Head on over to Dirty Birds
baseball dot com. You can get yourself a dozen roses
from Young Floral Company for opening day tickets, a Dirty
Bird's blanket and a beanie Dirty Bird's mug, and an ornament,
all hand delivered by Dusty, the mascot for the Dirty Birds.
(18:12):
Can get all that for one hundred bucks. Now you
must live within twenty miles of Charleston to have it delivered.
If you need more more information, to visit dirty Birds
baseball dot com. And you said you don't have to,
You don't have to have an appointment, But do you
recommend appointments?
Speaker 6 (18:26):
It is nice to have a sort of idea of
how many people we're gonna have, but I don't need to.
But if you want to make an appointment, if you're
a person who needs an appointment, that's fine too.
Speaker 2 (18:36):
What's in the years that you've done this. We're going
back to Judge King. What's the most unique wedding? If
you had one that really kind of sticks out that
you thought, well, this is interesting.
Speaker 6 (18:47):
There have been several, okay, but one in particular was
a Brian and groom that brought their dogs, Okay, ring bears?
Speaker 2 (18:54):
Is that okay?
Speaker 6 (18:55):
In the courthouse it is if they'll let you in, okay, sure,
if they still will.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
Come all right, sore, Okay. So here's a good piece
of advice. If you are going to bring your dogs
as ring bearers, then probably call ahead of time. That
might be a good idea.
Speaker 6 (19:10):
Yes, that is smart. But otherwise they're all really nice weddings.
It really is nice when people get married and they're
happy and they bring their families and everyone's having a
good day.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
See, I would have thought, and maybe this has happened
over the years, you had a couple that was like,
had a little age on them that came back, you know,
the maybe's. And I'm not going to throw out a number.
Somebody will text me and go, well, that's not old
of fifty five plus, because I'm fifty five, So I'll
say fifty five plus.
Speaker 6 (19:36):
I have had a lot of remarriages. I've had a
lot of people who have gotten divorced and have reconciled
and have gotten married again in that age group. Okay,
I've had probably four couples that have come in on
the Valentine's Day to do that.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
Now, is there a limit you talked about family and
friends coming. Is there a limit that you say well this,
you know. I mean, and I would think that there
may be a limit on the number of people simply
because of the schedule, you know, because you try to
schedule them. I didn't, I mean, I mean not really.
Speaker 6 (20:03):
Okay, if you want to bring a ton of people,
we'll work it out, okay.
Speaker 2 (20:07):
And is there any sort of delay you talked about
people bringing video and bringing photographers. I mean you just
kind of work with them.
Speaker 6 (20:13):
I kind of work with them and let them stay
as long as they would like, you know, within reason.
If I've got a bunch of people in the hallway waiting,
people are always good to accommodate. But I let everybody
take pictures before and after if they want to, Okay,
for however long they.
Speaker 2 (20:27):
Need, all right. So just know that that if you're
planning on running over on your lunch hour, do you
take a break for lunch? By the way, you do not? Okay?
All right, So if you're planning on coming over in
your lunch hour, just know that if you are a
hard I have to be back by one o'clock. You
might want to be a little bit more flexible with that,
depending on the people that are in front of you.
Speaker 6 (20:45):
Or just let me know, yeah, or make an appointment.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
That's a good appointment. Yeah, that's a good way. All right, Well,
can I ask you a personal question? Okay? All right,
let's let's talk about your wedding. Any anything you want
to throw out about your wedding. I'll tell you mine
if you'll tell you Okay, you go first, Okay, Well, okay.
My wife and I got married in nineteen ninety two.
I remember September the nineteenth, nineteen ninety two, at a
family church in Logan County. Probably the simplest wedding ever.
(21:11):
We walked down the aisle together, funny story. And there's
a video floating around out there. Of course it's on VHS,
much like much like my Cowboys super Bowl. It's still
on VHS and I don't have anything to play it on.
But we got this idea we were going to walk
down the aisle together. All right. I got a little
(21:32):
ahead of her, and so I'm actually walking ahead of
her and like talking to the crowd and like high five,
like you know, I'm going back to my wrestling days.
I'm in a wrestling show and I'm like, hey man,
how's it?
Speaker 10 (21:43):
You know?
Speaker 2 (21:44):
High five and people, you know, right, and left and
I had had to stop kind of and we had
told the lady who was playing the music, it was
this is the church pianist, we said. She said, well,
what song do you want? And I and this was
the time, summer of ninety two was the big romantic
(22:05):
song at that time was the Brian Adams song Everything
I Do would Do It for You told her specifically,
don't play that song because I just thought it was
just a corny type song. She took it as play
that song, and so we did, you know, came out
to everything I Do I Do It for You, which
was the one song we said please don't.
Speaker 6 (22:24):
Play and now it's ingrained in your memory, for it's
ingrained in my memory forever.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
So all right, that was the story of my wedding.
I just remember the weather was like picture perfect. We
didn't have a honeymoon because I was working at a
radio station in Ohio and the radio station actually got
us a very nice hotel room at the Holiday Inn
in Canaga, Ohio. So we after the dinner, we packed
(22:51):
up drove my Ford escort to Canaga, Ohio, and that's
where we spent our honeymoon. And then I think I
had to work work the next day. I was working
a lot of weekends back in those days, so yeah,
that was mine, right, your turn now.
Speaker 6 (23:05):
All right. Our wedding was in two thousand and one.
It was blazing hot that I do remember. It was
at Edgewood Country Club. We got married there. David du Boyce,
who was my childhood pastor at christ Church United Methodists,
flew in from retirement and Hilton had and married us,
which was very special to me and still is to
this day. His son, actually, Peter the Boyce is coming
to play the organ at christ Church United Methodists February
(23:28):
twenty second. Don't miss that cheap plug. Yeah it was,
But anyway, it was very, very hot. I was getting ready.
I was with all my bridesmaids and my friend who
was doing a reading in our wedding, Chris Larzo, came
in and he said, well, everything's going to be fine.
And I said, why is it not fine, Chris, And
he said, well, JB's hung up somewhere, but he's coming.
(23:53):
So it turned out that one of JB's groomsman's car
broke down and JB was literally on the side of
the interstate trying to fix the car before the wedding
got there right in time, just under the wire, like.
Speaker 2 (24:03):
Little grease on his hands like that.
Speaker 6 (24:05):
Yeah, but you know, you know, j B, he'll stop
and help it goes.
Speaker 2 (24:08):
It goes back to that classic country song by Shennandella
Get Me Give Me to the Church on time. I
guess he made it.
Speaker 10 (24:14):
He made it.
Speaker 6 (24:15):
But it was blazing.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
Hot, okay. And what time year was it?
Speaker 6 (24:17):
It was August. I'm sorry, yeah, no, no, no, it
was juih here we.
Speaker 2 (24:21):
Go, ye, it was June thirtieth.
Speaker 6 (24:23):
I'm terrible.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
It's the guy that has a hard time with.
Speaker 6 (24:26):
August is when our first daughter was more and that's why.
Speaker 2 (24:27):
Okay, all right, you had a good excuse, yes, right,
it was all right. So let's just kind of recap here.
It's the King of Hearts Marathon wedding day. We want
to check, and it's going to be on Friday the thirteenth.
With this winter, you have to look ahead, and Brian
Hughes would tell me, you know, don't look that far
in advance. But on surface, it looks okay.
Speaker 1 (24:45):
It does.
Speaker 6 (24:45):
It looks like it's actually going to be clear.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
Yeah, as of right now. So that's the way it
looks right now. Give us the phone number again, and
people want to call three zero four.
Speaker 6 (24:54):
Three five seven zero three six seven. That is my assistant,
Mindy Martin. She will set you up with an appointment.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
You want one, all right. And you said that you
have to have you have to have the pre marriage
stuff already set up. So you got to have your license,
So talking, you've got to go.
Speaker 6 (25:07):
To the county clerk's office get your license from them.
You can get it same day, no problem. I can't
remember what their fee as might be. Fifteen dollars, I
hope I'm right on that. I really don't know. But
everything else after that is free, all right, all right?
Speaker 2 (25:20):
Do you stop to have a blood test in West Virginia?
Speaker 6 (25:22):
Do you not?
Speaker 2 (25:22):
Okay? Well, I thought they did away with that.
Speaker 6 (25:25):
It's been a long long time because I didn't have
to have a blood test.
Speaker 2 (25:27):
Okay, way back then, Yeah, ninety two we had to
have a blood test.
Speaker 1 (25:32):
I think we are.
Speaker 6 (25:32):
Coming up on our twenty fifth anniversary.
Speaker 14 (25:34):
All that.
Speaker 6 (25:35):
I just did the math in my head.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
Well, happy anniversary to you and the UJB Judge Mary
clear Acres. Before I let you go, though, anything new
in the court system, I don't mean cases or anything
like that. But tell us was it guilty or absolutely
well no, no, I mean anything as far as the
court proceedings go with the you know, anything anything.
Speaker 6 (25:53):
I can't think of anything actually, right off the top
of my head, I think it's all business as usual.
Most of what you're seeing coming out of the courthouse
is us having to cancel court and get done with early.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
That's the bit that's been the biggest news. And because
you know, I mean, we get these announcements. You know
that you guys that Kenaw County sends out that says,
you know, the Judicial Annex will be closing early, or
the courthouse is going to be closing, and it's just
I mean, and obviously it's it's out of caution, it
has to be done, but it does, you know, impact
people that have business to do there and certainly the
people that work there. But you know, it's it's winter.
Speaker 6 (26:25):
It is winter, and it's been a dangerous winter.
Speaker 2 (26:27):
It has been dangerous.
Speaker 6 (26:28):
Well, it's like our construction, I don't know if you've
seen that looks like it's going it's it's moving along
smoothly or thankful to the County Commission for that. We're
our new you had rich Lindsay in here, I think too.
Speaker 2 (26:38):
Long a ya, he's a regular.
Speaker 6 (26:40):
Yeah, he's up there doing his thing in his new,
brand new court room. I'm not jealous of it. It's
all fancy.
Speaker 2 (26:44):
But all right, Lindsay give up the office there. And
I do want to tell the folks that you may
actually have more people show up this year because when
they invite you back on Wednesday a Metro News Midday,
which that means that you are going to be uh yeah,
we got your scheduled on Wednesday at two o'clock on
(27:06):
Metro News Midday on Wednesday, so you're going to be here.
And so we're going to be taking this message state
wide because you can get married anywhere. I mean, you know,
I mean you don't necessarily have to be in your
home county. So if somebody's listening to us in Greenbrier
County and they want to come and get married, they
can do it.
Speaker 6 (27:19):
I should have said that. We actually have already had
a couple of people call and say they're coming from
about an hour hour and a half.
Speaker 2 (27:24):
Okay, well we're about to add to that, just so
you know when we have you on Wednesday. And then
as your schedule allows on Friday, we'll do what we
normally have done, and we'll just kind of do a
little check and what time do you start again? I
start at nine at nine o'clock. Okay, So if I
know one year, I think what I had you on
the on the air live from there, I think we
were like your assistant was, if I remember correctly, your
(27:46):
assistant was texting me or whatever and say, okay, we'll
just stall a little bit. She's almost done.
Speaker 6 (27:50):
Well, I won't take one if I'm getting one live
on the air. If I can get someone to an
agree to that, I will.
Speaker 2 (27:56):
Yeah. If it's just keep it short, of course, but.
Speaker 6 (27:59):
It's a I think it's about a three minute okay.
Speaker 2 (28:02):
Now, can people come in? And if they come in
and they say, well, i've written this, I want my
own vowels and that sort of thing, because couples do
that from time to time.
Speaker 6 (28:09):
Absolutely that that's actually less work for me. So I'm
good with that as well.
Speaker 2 (28:13):
Okay, so it's just like a regular wedd Are you
just gonna do several of them in one day?
Speaker 6 (28:17):
That's right? So we're hoping we get a lot of folks.
Speaker 2 (28:20):
All right, we'll talk to you again on Wednesday, and
then we'll check in with you live at the courthouse
on Friday to see how it's going.
Speaker 6 (28:25):
Jo'll be tired of me by the end of the.
Speaker 2 (28:28):
Well. Look as long as I have you on the
guests on the show and I'm not in front of you,
then and I'm perfect. I'll never get tired of you. Okay,
all right, as long as I'm not in front of
the bench, it's all good. As long as you're in
my courtroom, we're fine.
Speaker 6 (28:40):
That's fine.

I'll met your News midday. I do want to say, though,
before we get into anything else about the death of
Danny Boyd. Danny died sixty nine years old last week.
Of course he was a regular on the show here.
And what a life that Danny led. He was an
educator for well over thirty years at West Virginia State, filmmaker, author,
(33:54):
What a great life and a simply all around good dude.
And we're gonna have more reflections on Danny Boyd. Come
it up later today. On Metro News Midday, Larry Gross
from Mountain State just go to join us to talk
about his good friend Danny Boyd. I gotta I'll tell
you and I sort of talked about this a little
(34:16):
bit on Metro News Midday on Friday when we learned
about the death of Danny Boyd. One of my favorite
Danny Boyd's stories. Danny did a variety of things. Is
as I said, screenwriter, author, wrote kid's books, traveled. I mean,
he just just a very very unique guy. Uh. But
he had an interest in pro wrestling. And when I
(34:39):
say he had an interest in pro wrestling. I don't
mean he sat back like many of us did, you know,
back in the day, and watched it at six oh
five on Saturday night, which is where I became hooked
on pro wrestling. I'm not talking about that. I'm talking
about he got involved in it and had in a
couple of his movies. He had Dusty Rhoads, you know,
the legendary Dusty Roads in a movie of his. And
(35:02):
so Danny got involved in pro wrestling, and mainly because
he was doing some writing about it wanted to learn
more about it. When I say Danny got involved, I
mean he really got involved. And if you knew Danny
boyd Danny was not a big guy. Okay, I mean
not a big guy. I'm gonna guess five seven, five eight,
(35:23):
maybe one hundred and fifty five hundred and sixty pounds, Okay,
not a big guy at all. But he got involved
in it, and he became a manager, not a wrestler,
although he did as we used to stay in a
wrestling business. He did take a few bumps every now
and then, which means he got hit and thrown around
and stuff like that, because he believed in fully throwing
(35:43):
himself into the character, and I used to, as I've
told you before, I used to ring announce a lot
of wrestling events all over the country. And this particular night,
we were in the thriving metropolis of Jeffrey in Boone
County and we were doing a wrestling show was I
(36:06):
was serving as ring announcer. Danny came in with some
other guys, and Danny off Mike was like the most humble,
you know, just easy going guy, but much like a
lot of wrestlers do when they get involved in the
business or managers, became a totally different person. And he
(36:28):
got on the microphone. And this was supposed a time,
I don't know the exact year, two thousand and eight,
two thousand and nine, something like that. Ten maybe he
gets on the microphone and again you got to remember
where we are. We were in Jeffrey, in Boone County,
right in the heart of coal country. The coal industry
was really starting to struggle at that time. I'm gonna
(36:49):
leave the politics out of this, but you know what
was going on at that time, So the coal industry
was struggling a lot more than had there layoffs and
things of that nature, battles with the EPA, so on
and so forth. Danny gets on on the microphone, grabs
the microphone from me, which you know, spoiler alert, I
knew that was coming, grabs the microphone from me, tells
me to you know, sit down and shut up, and
(37:10):
then starts trashing the coal industry, talking about you dirty,
disgusting coal miners, going getting on your knees and rooting
around like groundhogs. And I'm so glad that the Obama
administration and the EPA is doing what they are doing
to shut down this industry. None of you people desert
(37:32):
And even even for me, as somebody who spent a
great deal of time in the wrestling business and at
that point had been in it for the Math Dave
well over twenty years. At that point, it was a
little much. Okay, We're in a small grade school gym,
Jeffrey Spencer Grade School in Boone County, and I thought
(37:56):
to myself, we are not going to get out of
here alive. And you know, a lot of coal miners
were there. They brought their kids, and you know, I
think that they thought it, okay, this is part of
the show until it's not. And literally, security, which is
(38:18):
usually you know what you'd expect at a small wrestling
show in Boone County, West Virginia, what security is. It
got ugly. It got ugly really really quickly. And I
had to talk to a good friend of mine who
was there with his family and say, look, I need
your help because we are not going to get out
(38:40):
of here live. And we had to cover Danny up,
escort him out of the building, put him in his car,
and said, look, you need to leave now, and well
we're only halfway through. No, no, no, Danny, you got
to leave now. And he left, and so we got
(39:00):
the crowd sort of calmed down a little bit at
that point. But I just wanted to throw I just
wanted to throw that out there about Danny boyd He
sixty nine years old, as I said, frequent guests to
the show, and every time Danny would come in, I
would say, hey, do you remember Jeffrey said Jeffrey, West Virginia,
(39:23):
where we damn near didn't make it out alive. I'm
just saying, but good times. And I was going back
through my text messages and the last text I got
from Danny was when he was on the show promoting
one of his children's books and I sent him a
picture I had taken a picture of him holding his
books and I texted to him. In his last text
(39:43):
to me, he said, Dave, you're a peach. And if
you knew Danny Boyd, that's a classic Danny. But You're

had nothing to do with his particular style of music.
It wasn't that. I just prefer you want to you
want to entertain me, get me four guys up there
or gals sitting with a guitar and no dancing, no whatever,
and I'd like that. But that's just me. Okay, that's
just me. I prefer actual live musicians. Okay, I watched it.
It was visually appealing, I guess if you like that
(45:25):
sort of thing. But I just you know, your social
media feed. And I told my wife yesterday, I said, okay,
a bit of advice, just stay off social media, you know.
And I tried to adhere to the advice myself because
all it's going to be, and you saw it, all
(45:46):
it was going to be was that's the greatest halftime
show ever or that's the worst halftime show ever. And
if you don't like it, then you're a racist, which
I think is as salute BS because you can not
like something and doesn't make you erasist. Maybe you just
didn't like it, you know, and it's just it's just
(46:11):
where we are. There were people that are gonna comment,
and they have online. They didn't care what bad Bunny did.
They were going to comment and say it was terrible
no matter what. And there were gonna be those who
are gonna say it's the greatest thing ever, no matter what.
So I did this morning. I watched the turning Point,
(46:37):
the alternative, which, by the way, this is not new.
There have been alternative halftime shows in the past. The
show Living Color did it back in the nineties. Wwe
did something one time, so there have been other alternatives.
I thought, calling it the all Americans show when a newsflash,
bad Bunny is from Puerto Rico, which is an America
(47:00):
a territory, so he's American. I thought was a little childish,
but okay, whatever, I watched it this morning, I recorded it.
I watched it before I came to Worth this morning,
and it was good. The turning point us from a
musical standpoint, I thought it was good. I actually preferred
it from a musical standpoint. But that's just my what
I like in music. Okay, Kid Rock of course performed
(47:28):
as kid Rock Ball with the ball his big hit
which believe it or not, that's songs almost thirty years old.
And then he went away and Brantley Gilbert some other
people came out, and then he came back as Rob Ritchie,
which is a real name, and he did a country
song by Cody Johnson and he did a great job
on it. Okay, you know, so what I just I don't.
(47:54):
I just don't understand. But it's just where we are.
I mean, it's just where we are.
Speaker 8 (48:00):
Are.
Speaker 2 (48:00):
I mean, son comes out today. I could post on
my social media, hey it's Sonny, and somebody said, well,
how can you enjoy son when Trump's in office? Or
you know or vice versa, you know or you know.
It's just I don't know, It's just it's getting to
the point now it's just simply ridiculous. And Texas Dave
(48:22):
worst super Bowl I've seen for years, definitely the worst
halftime entertainment. Couldn't understand the word it was sung. Sad
to say the least, thanks as a texture.
Speaker 17 (48:31):
Texas Dave. Kid Rock was a dude. Okay, I think
I said that. I don't really know what that means,
but he is it like saying TJ's laughing at me?
Is it like saying when you say someone's a dog
and it means that they're good. I mean, I don't
know what that text means.
Speaker 2 (48:49):
Maybe they meant he was the dude or the dude,
I don't know. I look and I'll say this about
kid Rock. I have been a kid Rock fan since
he came out. I like it. The theme to this
show is a kid Rock song. So hot. Okay. I
like kid Rock. Okay. I think he's a very good musician,
and a lot of people will scoff at that, but
I will say man plays like ten different instruments, doesn't
(49:10):
read a note of music, and he's self taught and
he started playing when he was twenty five years old.
I respect that, Okay, I wish he wouldn't be as
involved in the political stuff as he is. I'm my
motto on all singers, regardless of the isle, has always
been shut up and sing, you know, just do your thing.
Or but that's just that's that's personal preference. I do
think though, that the people that are losing their minds
(49:33):
over a Spanish halftime show are people that probably for
the most part, need to master the English language themselves,
learn how to learn, learn the different kinds of theirs
t H E R E or t H I R.
Learn ideal from idea, and then then we'll talk. Okay,
(49:56):
but I guess I'm just old TJ. I just I don't.
I don't care anymore. Don't I don't care. I just
I just don't.
Speaker 7 (50:04):
Let me tell you what was great about last night. Okay,
last night was America. Last night was the market. People
voted with their dollars by their remote control. They either
watched something or they didn't. They watched one halftime show
or the other, or if you like me, I found
that Roadhouse was on and I left that.
Speaker 2 (50:24):
Well, the game itself wasn't entertaining, So I mean, I
guess it got bed. I heard Chris on the Morning
News say it got better after we went to bet
not together up.
Speaker 7 (50:32):
And that's all that corporate America cares about. That's all
they should care about. The NFL made a strategic decision
last night. They thought that by having Big Bunny on
they could diversify their bad Bunny Okay, sorry, but whatever
his name is. They thought that they could diversify their
audience and bring in a younger audience who otherwise wasn't
watching the game. They made a calculated bet. The data
(50:53):
will tell whether or not that proved to be accurate
and whether or not they can profit often.
Speaker 2 (50:59):
But here's what we are TJ. People won't believe the
data when the data don't have to the data data
is hard. It's dollars. No, it's dollars. It's fake. It's fake.
That's that's what we'll be saying. Whatever, Texas. Dave you
like to laugh all the way to the bank with
the fake dollars, then, Dave you like the lyrics of
him singing about underage girls. I think that's where the
kid rock hate mostly comes from. Toy I want to
push back on it and say that's not where all
(51:20):
the hate comes from. Yes, he does. He does. He
has done songs about about about young girls. So I
have a lot of people in the hip hop world too.
Speaker 7 (51:28):
You know, this is America. I'll watch what I want
to watch, and I'm not a racist. If I don't
watch something, I'm not a racist if I do watch something.
Get off your high horse.
Speaker 2 (51:36):
In his story, all right, text says write no Facebook
for me today, says the text. Well, I think most
of it was posted last night anyway. So you guys
have got the bright day that to bring me back
to talk about this at ten thirty.
Speaker 7 (51:47):
Look, that's what everybody's talking about. So that's what we
do on this show. In my show and your show,
we talk about what people are talking about. And I'm
not shy about sharing my opinion about it. You're not shy.
So listeners can call up or text let us know
what they think. We'll talk some politics in there too,
And Brad Mcklehenny's going to lead you off the day.
Happy birthday, Brat, Happy birthday, Brat. Were are we supposed
to disclose that?
Speaker 2 (52:07):
I don't know. I don't either, said, cats out the bag.
I did early. What people have birthdays? I mean, I'm sorry,
he not me. He wasn't you know, hatch, he actually
he actually what is your birthday? By the way, you
don't need to know, dude. Okay, I'll I'll just go
break into Ashley's office upstairs, and you know what I have.
Speaker 7 (52:22):
For whatever reason, no one knows it here. I don't
know how I've pulled that off. But no one knows
what TJ stands for either.
Speaker 2 (52:27):
They don't. I think it stands for Thelma June Hiberius Jones.
But that's just me Zee later till then, have fun.
I love somebody.
Speaker 12 (52:48):
I mean you see it.
Speaker 1 (52:49):
Sam ninty six point five. That then Charleston one oh
four point five Cross Langue w VRC Media Station. We're
