absolutely wild, because they just got sold a year ago.

But I did want to talk some college football to
start off with care because of course we're getting close
and we know NFL preseason games starting tomorrow. We've didn't
have an announcement from the Atlanta Falcons as far as
who their starter is going to be in their first
preseason game, so we do have that. But with college
football right on the cusp of starting with fall camp,

and especially here in the state of South Carolina, I
know we're anxious. We're all in this boat together. When
I say that, I mean Clemson and South Carolina fans
because that's the one thing that we have in common
going into this season, is that we all had to

go through difficult seasons last year. Yes, and so we're
all in the same boat, thinking Okay, is this going
to be the year that both teams can be good?
Last year, man, there was so much optimism. Yeah, and
I mean a lot of egg on people's face, just
in terms of the letdown, so to speak. Clemson going
(04:57):
seven and six, South Carolina going four and eight. Yeah,
and it never materialized into the national narratives that both
teams would be in the hunt for a college football
playoff appearance, let alone a national championship. Didn't even sniff
the opportunity for a conference championship for either of the schools.

And so, hey, we're all in this together and now
heading into this season of hope whatever it might be
talking season right now, I think we're almost in a
very similar situation in terms of are both fan bases
okay with flying under the radar right now?
Speaker 2 (05:41):
We don't need a whole lot.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Of hype, We don't need a whole lot of magnification,
the spotlight, you know, on this right now?
Speaker 2 (05:52):
Is there something to be said about being the underdog?
Speaker 3 (05:55):
Oh yeah, and not having to live up to some
of the pressure.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
And I truly believe that.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Pressure mounts as the more you win, because the target
gets put on you. And I know there's a lot
of people that would understand what I'm talking about. When
you win a national championship or you start having success,
all of a sudden, the target's on your back.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Oh yeah, that's how it happens. That's how it happens.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
And it's not just in sports, that's also in life
and in other industries. And we even talked about it
with Brian Kite last week of Daily Discipline, just in
terms of, hey, when you start having success, people start
taking shots at you.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
Oh they do.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
Yeah, you become polarizing one way or the other. And
there's no different in terms of when you start having
success in the sports world. Yeah, people start looking at
a calendar, and if you're on their calendar as in
terms of your playing them, a lot of times that
game gets circled yep. Ooh, we've got the Super Bowl

champs coming into town.

Can we dethrown them?
Speaker 3 (07:03):
Yes? Or we've got the National champions come into town.
Can we take them down?
Speaker 2 (07:07):

And then all of a sudden, again that national narrative
starts building. Okay, Team X, team Y, whatever it might be. Yeah,
that was a great run. Can you do it again?
Speaker 2 (07:20):

Just look at Seattle this is going to be the
narrative for Seattle. Okay, was it a flash in the pan?
Can you do it again? And we're already starting to
see odds right now that nobody's given Seattle much of
a fighter's chance.
Speaker 4 (07:36):
It's all about the Rams. I was gonna say, did
they win the Super Bowl last year? Was it the
Seattle Seahawks? And don't imagine that because I feel like
nobody's talking about it.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
Everybody's talking about the Rams. Oh yeah, yeah. And I
understand why the roster is loaded. You got Miles Garrett,
I get.
Speaker 4 (07:52):
All the right additions with the with the corners, like, yes,
they're building a superstar roster.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
They're the Dodgers of the NFL. Right now, that's right, And.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
You've got on they right, he's arguably the best coach
in the NFL. But Mike McDonald is coming off of
a Super Bowl championship, right and the Seahawks beat the Rams. Yes,
so you do have that. But the point is is
that it's all about what have you done for me lately?

But as you get to a certain level, then you're
expected to be there year in, year out, And in
college football we talk about it consistently. I mean, look
at Alabama with Nick Saban, I mean it was a
foregone conclusion that you had to include Alabama there. Now
is it Georgia even though I know they haven't done
much postseason wise? Sure, but we're looking at narratives right

now for Georgia is that talent wise, their roster is
how it's constructed. It's the best in college football? Right
and so here we are once again that Okay, Now
does Georgia have to live up to that expectation? Do
they have to live up to the hype? Ohio State?
Speaker 2 (08:57):
Okay? Or yes?
Speaker 3 (09:00):
Indiana yep, Well they just won the national championship, but
the coaches said.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
They're number six. They're a lot like Seattle in a
weird way. They definitely are.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
Yeah, I mean it's amazing, and it's because they haven't
been in those positions right consistently. And for Indiana never never, yeah,
absolutely never. At least Seattle has had Super Bowl appearances. Yeah,
it's been a minute in a trophy. Yeah, So I
mean they have been there, but it has has been

many years. But for Indiana not so much. And so
now when you look at Clemson in South Carolina, I
think there's something to be said about both coaches.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
They're okay right now with hey, don't talk about us.
We're okay. We don't need you guys talk about us.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
And I'm talking about the national media, regional media, local media, whatever.
We don't need all of the hype. And actually, from
a national perspective, right we're just worrying about us right now.
And maybe last year for both teams, all of the
national tension was a distraction and that impeded the ability

to forget about the pressure and just go out there
and play the game. It was almost like the pressure
did get to both teams. And of course injuries happened,
that's part of it. I do understand that, and both
teams had injuries, offensive line issues, you had to jump

people around different positions, those type of situations. But I
think this year, and this is a quote from Dabo
Sweeney as he was talking with Larry Williams of Tiger
Illustrated and now Tiger Illustrated is part of the on
three family, and Clemson's Dabo sweeneys on whether there have

been any standouts in fall camp and he's as quote,
everybody's just working. We're just a bunch of nobody's. We'll
see if anybody becomes somebody as we play some games.

We're just a bunch of nobody's. That's almost like Steve
Spurrier esque right there. Yeah, I mean it's amazing. How
now it's you know, everybody else and we're over here
talking about the Roy Buss as Dabbo would talk about,

just in terms of, hey, nobody is talking about us.
We're just kind of the forgotten. And I think he
likes that. Yeah, And I even think right now Shane
Beemer is in the same position in terms of what
he's talked about, where he's mentioned several times that, hey, yeah,

I know nobody's going to give us any love. What
was it thirteenth, Oh yeah, or thirteenth or eleventh in
the in the preseason polls.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
Thirteenth.
Speaker 3 (12:12):
Yeah, I think this is pretty disrespectful. Yes, I think
so so. And he was saying that, Yeah, last year,
you guys had us in the top tier. This year,
even with basically the same roster, we're just no good
all of a sudden.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
Yeah, but that's.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
Okay, you guys, you know we're we're not focused on that,
and that's why. I think both coaches right now are
a okay with just sitting back and just focusing on
their team and they'll let the results play out based
on the field and not trying to live up to

all the hype and not so much the coaches having
to worry about it.

It's the players.
Speaker 3 (12:56):
It's the noise that the players here and having to
live up to some of those expectations. And I think
it's a good thing for both schools right now. Oh.
Speaker 4 (13:07):
I think it's wonderful in the sense that sometimes sometimes
you're handed more than you can handle.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
And what I mean by that not.
Speaker 4 (13:19):
Necessarily maybe from a Dabo Sweeney standpoint, because he's used
to being in the national spotlight. You know, you have
the championships under his belt, so that's nothing that's not
necessarily new territory for him. But when you come to
South Carolina and all of a sudden, now you're catapulted
in the limelight of oh wow, you've got this Heisman
winning quarterback that he could potentially be the fifth.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
Overall or the one of the first overall.
Speaker 4 (13:39):
In the draft, and like all the hype that came
with that, I do wonder just looking at that team
were they ready for that sort of attention, because there
is a burden that comes with that. There's just a
weight that naturally comes with that, and sometimes you get
that weight thrust upon you before you're ready to step
into and carry that weight. And I do wonder if
maybe it was just a little early there for South
Carolina last year. Maybe it would have been better if

they flew under the radar last year. Nobody was kind
of talking about it. Maybe I don't know, who knows,
Maybe the season looks a little bit different. And then
I also like what Dabo Sweeney says, we're nobody's and
maybe you will become somebody. And I think there's merit
in that because you're not owed anything here in the
college football landscape.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
You're just not.
Speaker 4 (14:21):
Even though you've got Alabama that the big brands and
they are being talked about, they've kind of earned it.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
I mean, you've got a lot.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
Of good, good faith and good will there with what
Nick Saban left behind. Even though what you think of
Alabama today isn't necessarily what Alabama once was with Nick Saban,
A lot of that good will carries over just because
of how good Alabama was for so long and Clemson,
you still have a little bit of that.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
Obviously, you still got Dabbo there, so that carries over.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
But from a South Carolina perspective, you don't really have
any of that. You're building it, and now you're seeing
from a Clemson perspective some of that good will wearing
off a little bit that. Yeah, now we do have
to go back out there and earn it again. We
have to prove it. We're not somebody. We don't have
one of the top quarterbacks in the nation on our team.
We've got a good roster, but there's still question marks.

So we've got to go out there and we've got
to show them, Hey, this is who Clemson is, and
right now we'll focus on us.

Well, and I would even question do we know what
Christopher of Zena is or yeah, yeah, we don't know.
So we say that we don't have a top quarterback.
Who who was saying Fernando Mendoza is a top quarterback
right last year?
Speaker 2 (15:26):
Uh? Not many people, not till we got right there.
Speaker 4 (15:29):
No, even at the end, I still remember people questioning
Fernando Mendoza even when they were in the National championship.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Looking at it, like I still felt like people.
Speaker 4 (15:38):
Question not only Fernando Mendoza, but the but Indians well,
of course Indiana, Indiana.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
Yes, they they definitely questioned well, and they were questioning
Indiana in Indianapolis in the Big Ten Championship game. But
there's no doubt people question Fernando Mendoza. And that don't
get me wrong here. I'm not putting on orange colored
lenses and saying that Christopher Zena can burst onto the

scene like Fernando Mendoza. I don't know. I think there's
still a lot of question marks. He does seem to
be the guy that's going to be Clemson's quarterback, even
though there's a lot of discussion as far as Tate Renolds. Yeah,
true freshman coming in and can he push of Zena?
And I think Tate Reynolds is talented, but I just

can't see him taking over. I do think that Zena
from all things that I've heard and at least early
on in this camp, is that he seems to be
a leader.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
He seems to be rallying the guys.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
And of course there has to be an it factor
to these quarterbacks. We know that, and Lenora Sellers he
has that it factor. It just oozes off of Leonora
Sellers in terms of his personality all of that. But
there's also productivity that has to take place. So for
both of these quarterbacks, you have to go out there
and produce. And so Bosweeney is talking about is yes,

is what you're saying is that, Yeah, in all reality,
we are nobody right now, right, we got to go
earn it. And that's not a bad thing, yes, And
that's why he's not disparaging anybody. But it does sound
like he's sandbagging just a little bit that And that's
(17:22):
what I'm talking about. And you know, Steve Spurrier would
do that, Lou Holtz.

Would do that.

And I'm not just pinpointing those two out because they
coached at South Carolina, but I do think that those
are two that come to the top of mind. Bobby
Bowden would do it to a certain degree. And even
in basketball, there would be Dean Smith at times talking
about his team and I'm like, Dean, I mean, You've
got for the top freshmen in the country on your

team and two of them not even in the starting
lineup yet, you know, so you can't say that.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
You just can't. But I understand it.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
It's it's about the psychology side of coaching and what
you have to do to have these players unite and
be united for the common goal, and that's to go
out there and be productive and ultimately win. And you know,
play to the standard of each of those coaches and
play to the standard of each of those teams. And

I'm gonna say each of those teams. I'm talking South
Carolina and Clemson. But I do think that's unique. Last
year and this year. Both teams are in the same
type of position and the fan bases are hoping for
certain things to play out. And we did mention South
Carolina in the preseason poll, so they were eleventh in
(18:43):
the preseason poll out of the SEC and that's the
SEC media poll there, and then they were number five
last year.
Speaker 2 (18:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
So and that's where Shane Biemer saying, Okay, you had
his fifth last year, eleventh this year.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
But we've basically got the same team.
Speaker 3 (19:03):
Yeah, but we have a new offensive line coach, we
have a new offensive coordinator, and we've got Leonora Sellers
another year under his belt, got Nick carter back, We've
got the Dylan Stewart also, because you can put both
of those guys on that to all three team, Yes,
with Nick Carber and Dylan Stewart. And I've seen reports
(19:26):
that right now they're projecting Dylan Stewart could be the
number one ed rusher taken in the NFL Draft. Really, yes,
So I mean there's somewhat more of that hype. So
the point is is that is their disrespect to South
Carolina right now based on a four and eight record,
and ultimately it's probably warranted, and it's warranted for Clemson
(19:52):
that when you finish seven and six, based on especially
how the rosters were last year. But I do think
they're it was a little bit of maybe putting the
cart before the horse was South Carolina last year, that oh,
this is going to be the team that's, you know,
going to break the mold so to speak, for South
(20:13):
Carolina and be that differentiating type of team. But I'm
looking at it right now and saying, could this be
the season that they actually become that differentiating team?
Speaker 2 (20:25):
Because did they need and I.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
Don't say need necessarily like, oh, we need to go
four and eight so we be better next year? Right,
I'm saying it in terms of sometimes how you get
to that success side is falling short? Yeah, you gotta
be humbled a little. There's a little bit of that
and understanding what goes into it and what it takes

to win and the margins can be so thin, and
how you have to prepare yourself maybe just a little
bit differently, yeah, for.

A different outcome.

And that's the crazy thing about athletic performance and even
the mental side of it. Sometimes it's just a little
extra thing that you need to do.
Speaker 2 (21:14):
Yeah.

And I also wonder too if there's a little bit
of coming to the understanding that just because people say
that you're good doesn't necessarily mean that you're good. Like
it's cool to have belief in yourself. Yes, But at
the same time, I don't know. I've seen time and
time again, and this isn't even from a sports perspective,
but maybe from a human perspective that you hear, oh man,
(21:38):
you're so good, you're so good that we buy into it,
that we kind of, I don't want to say forget
to put in the work, but we buy into it.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
Enough that we go, okay, well, yeah, oh I'm good. Yeah,
of course I'm good. I don't nobody can be me. Yeah,
I don't have to.
Speaker 4 (21:49):
Yeah, And that can really lead to that falling on
your face, so to speak, where you come off with
a four and eight season.
Speaker 3 (21:56):
That's right, Yes, And I see it in basketball quite
a bit, just in terms of players that are good
shooters and they'll be wrapping up practice, they're going to
get some extra shots up and they'll get two hundred
shots up like, oh, I'm good. And then there's another
guy that he gets five hundred shots up yep, and
(22:17):
then we see better performance from the guy who put
in some more shots.
Speaker 2 (22:22):
Yes.
Speaker 3 (22:22):
And I'm not saying that it is a direct linear
type of equation that, oh, if you shoot five hundred shots,
you're going to be much better than a guy that
shoots two hundred shots. I mean, there's obviously other factors
to it. The point is that sometimes it's just going
that little extra Can you stay another forty five minutes right,
keep your foot on.

Can you do those type of things that will help
you somewhat get over that hump? All right, we got

Yes, sir and guys, it is absolutely great to be
the underdog. Yes, And now I've just you're you're talking
about Dabbo's comments and talking about South Carolina and I
am a loyal South Carolina fan. No, no, no secret there, uh.
And that is you know, whether you're in sports or

entertainment or business or whatever it may be, you're only
as good as your last performance. And if you're Clemson
in South Carolina, and look, South Carolina a lot of
problems last year. Now maybe they got them fixed, whether
(24:46):
it be new coaches, recruiting and shoring up. We do
know that South Carolina has three very talented people quarterback, wide, receiver,
defensive ends. We know who those guys are. Clemson, I
don't know a whole lot about them. Actually I usually
do because I have Clemson friends and all that and
(25:08):
keep up with them. So you talk about somebody being
under the radar, maybe Clemson's is the best place, you know,
I mean, and Richmond, I know you're a Clemson person.
I literally I mean they, I mean, I mean you
think about Clemson last year and they finished seventh and six,
and they had nine guys drafted in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (25:28):
Yeah, and all nine of those guys win in the
first five rounds.
Speaker 5 (25:33):
Correct, And they're gonna make rosters I'm sure, probably all
of them. And what that tells you is that they
if you've got I mean, they're well coached. And even
South Carolina had some guys in South Carolina, So what
happened or whatever? I mean, South Carolina's four and eight,
and I know they had about three or four swing games.
(25:55):
They might could have won them. They might could have
been reversed last year and been eight and four. They weren't,
that's the bottom line. And and they couldn't finish games.
So I'm very optimistic about South Carolina this year. I
really am. I I am and And and Clemson. I'm
(26:16):
gonna be uh interested because I'll watch them. I keep
up Clemson being uh up here in the upstate, and
uh my best friend and And is Clemson person, and she's, uh,
you know, we'll we'll keep up. And I have been,
and I'm I'm not at Clempson even though I'm a
Carolina family. Lets they're playing with playing against each other.

But so I think really that, like I said when
I started, you're only as good as the last time
you were on the floor, on the field, on the
stage where you were you know. Gosh, I went and
saved the trade game back in with a C. D. C.
Young gosh, I went to ac DC. God they sucked.

They were terrible last night.

Oh you know, but no I did.
Speaker 5 (27:08):
But but let's just say you say something like that,
you don't see your favorite rock band or country singer
and they were terrible, and that's your impression, and they
come out where the next show they do and they
knock it out of the park, you know, for whatever
reason other than the lead singer was sick or whatever.
You can have any kind of issues you never know

that are going on within something that you're you're that
may be happening that you, as a spectator don't know. Okay,
I guess that's what I'm saying. And then all of
a sudden they turn around the next time and then
you make it right. So I guess that's what I'm saying.

At South Carolina and Clemson football, uh yeah, last year
was disappointing on both ends. So we'll see what happens
what they did between the previous performance and what the
new performance is going to be.

Yeah, and again, and I think there's similarities as we've
talked about with situations with new staff members and especially
at key roles like offensive coordinator Kendall Brow's there at
South Carolina and of course getting the band back together,
so to speak, with Chad Morris coming back to Clemson

as a new offensive coordinator. So I think there's a
lot of still questions, but the fan bases have to
be intrigued, like, Okay, I want to see how this
is going to work out. And does that give these
fan bases a little bit more optimism going into the seasons.
Versus if the rosters and coaching staffs would have been

the same, I think there would have been a little
bit more of apathy heading into this season. Because I'm
starting to get a sense that people are get a
little bit more excited, and I think maybe that just
naturally happens too Rocky as you get close to the
beginning of the season, as we've talked about the season
of Hope, and so you start maybe believing that, Okay,
this is it, this is the year because we've made
(29:13):
some of these changes.

What a great and I'll hang up Out is one
of great titles of an album. And while I wasn't
a big huge fan of the Police back in the day,
although I started, you know, you never It's like the
same thing with Led Zeppelin. I was not a big
led Zeppelin fan or not not a fan, but I

just didn't listen. But I never started appreciating that kind
of music, the Police, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and some
other of that music, back dating myself until I got older,
you know, as a as a young person, I just
hadn't and I was just locked in that this is

what I like, and I'm not going to listen. And
then you get older and I'm like, gosh, of mine,
I really would have loved to listen to this back
in when I was a teenager or back when and
when I was in college, and some of this stuff
that have been really good. But the name of the
album that the Police put out was Synchronicity. So that's

kind of what comes to minds as these are our teams,
the game Cocks and the Tigers get going, and they
got a lot of new favors. You've got a new
offensive coordinator on both teams. South Carolina's got a new
offensive line coach, you got Somesin's got a new quarterback.
South Carolina's got three talented players, and you get trying
(30:41):
to get people in sync and let's see how they do.

And so I started thinking, because man, some of the
music just again it's captivating, and what Rocky is talking

about and this is obviously spinning off of sports for
a moment, but because it made me think about timeless
music and standing the test of time. And I'm just
curious because when you think about like a Led Zeppelin,
a Rolling Stones, Police, the AC D C. Van Halen,

I mean you can there's several that you can put
on this list that you know.

The Beatles obviously.
Speaker 3 (32:22):
From the sixties to somewhere there.

In the eighties mid eighties maybe maybe let you get
like about an eighty eighty eighties, I'm maybe maybe, yeah,
And then it just seems that that period of time
because I mean, think about it, it's twenty twenty six.
I mean there's some music that's fifty years old that
we're still listening to, yeah, which yes, yes, and still

playing like in arenas and still like hype music come on, yes,
I mean. And so I'm curious, like, are there any
artists in the past five to teen years that we're
going to be listening to fifty years from now?

Ooh, that's a m probably don't want to hear it.

But I could see Taylor Swift living that, like she
just seems to be that like that icon right now.
Then there are a lot of girls that grow up
on Taylor Swift and that know Taylor Swift and then
idolize her that that music could probably carry on.

Oh that's a good question, see I And I'm also
probably not the one to specifically ask, because there's a
lot of artists that I'm not familiar with. Yeah, because
guess what I do default puts me back into the
seventies and eighties and early nineties, and because that was

the most impressionable time. That's when I was a kid
growing up in you know, early adult whatever it was.
So there's part to me that does need to recognize
that they're extremely talented artists out there right now. Yeah,
that I just might not be as familiar with. But
I also just don't know. And there's other factors that

go into it also because just think about how we
got music forty fifty years ago. That's totally different, completely different,
and it was limited also, and so it was that
scarcity type of situation. So it was almost like, man,
(34:36):
you had that music and you just listen to it
over and over until the tape ran out or too
you ruined your record, because I mean I remember playing records.
Oh yeah, that's how far back I go. And I
just wonder, though, even with like a Taylor Swift, yeah,
will her music stand the test of time, because it
blows me away that right now, like my kids, yeah,

who are twenty six, twenty four, and twenty two, they
will listen to some of the stuff that I listened
to growing up, and it's because it, oh, it's coming
back around all that yes, and so will there be
that recycling of some of the artists. But fifty years
from now, that's what I'm saying. I mean, yeah, that's

a big thing just in terms of how long Like
an aerosmith. Also, it's another one that I think of.
So it just it just made me think when Rocky
was talking about that. So I don't know, I'm just
taking it. I'm just curious. Hey, let me know your thoughts.

But I did want to talk some college football to
start off with care because of course we're getting close
and we know NFL preseason games starting tomorrow. We've didn't
have an announcement from the Atlanta Falcons as far as
who their starter is going to be in their first
preseason game, so we do have that. But with college
football right on the cusp of starting with fall camp,
(04:13):
and especially here in the state of South Carolina, I
know we're anxious. We're all in this boat together. When
I say that, I mean Clemson and South Carolina fans
because that's the one thing that we have in common
going into this season, is that we all had to
(04:33):
go through difficult seasons last year. Yes, and so we're
all in the same boat, thinking Okay, is this going
to be the year that both teams can be good?
Last year, man, there was so much optimism. Yeah, and
I mean a lot of egg on people's face, just
in terms of the letdown, so to speak. Clemson going
(04:57):
seven and six, South Carolina going four and eight. Yeah,
and it never materialized into the national narratives that both
teams would be in the hunt for a college football
playoff appearance, let alone a national championship. Didn't even sniff
the opportunity for a conference championship for either of the schools.
(05:18):
And so, hey, we're all in this together and now
heading into this season of hope whatever it might be
talking season right now, I think we're almost in a
very similar situation in terms of are both fan bases
okay with flying under the radar right now?
Speaker 2 (05:41):
We don't need a whole lot.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Of hype, We don't need a whole lot of magnification,
the spotlight, you know, on this right now?
Speaker 2 (05:52):
Is there something to be said about being the underdog?
Speaker 3 (05:55):
Oh yeah, and not having to live up to some
of the pressure.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
And I truly believe that.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Pressure mounts as the more you win, because the target
gets put on you. And I know there's a lot
of people that would understand what I'm talking about. When
you win a national championship or you start having success,
all of a sudden, the target's on your back.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Oh yeah, that's how it happens. That's how it happens.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
And it's not just in sports, that's also in life
and in other industries. And we even talked about it
with Brian Kite last week of Daily Discipline, just in
terms of, hey, when you start having success, people start
taking shots at you.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
Oh they do.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
Yeah, you become polarizing one way or the other. And
there's no different in terms of when you start having
success in the sports world. Yeah, people start looking at
a calendar, and if you're on their calendar as in
terms of your playing them, a lot of times that
game gets circled yep. Ooh, we've got the Super Bowl
(07:01):
champs coming into town.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
Can we dethrown them?
Speaker 3 (07:03):
Yes? Or we've got the National champions come into town.
Can we take them down?
Speaker 2 (07:07):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (07:08):
And then all of a sudden, again that national narrative
starts building. Okay, Team X, team Y, whatever it might be. Yeah,
that was a great run. Can you do it again?
Speaker 2 (07:20):
Yep?
Speaker 3 (07:22):
Just look at Seattle this is going to be the
narrative for Seattle. Okay, was it a flash in the pan?
Can you do it again? And we're already starting to
see odds right now that nobody's given Seattle much of
a fighter's chance.
Speaker 4 (07:36):
It's all about the Rams. I was gonna say, did
they win the Super Bowl last year? Was it the
Seattle Seahawks? And don't imagine that because I feel like
nobody's talking about it.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
Everybody's talking about the Rams. Oh yeah, yeah. And I
understand why the roster is loaded. You got Miles Garrett,
I get.
Speaker 4 (07:52):
All the right additions with the with the corners, like, yes,
they're building a superstar roster.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
They're the Dodgers of the NFL. Right now, that's right, And.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
You've got on they right, he's arguably the best coach
in the NFL. But Mike McDonald is coming off of
a Super Bowl championship, right and the Seahawks beat the Rams. Yes,
so you do have that. But the point is is
that it's all about what have you done for me lately?
(08:20):
But as you get to a certain level, then you're
expected to be there year in, year out, And in
college football we talk about it consistently. I mean, look
at Alabama with Nick Saban, I mean it was a
foregone conclusion that you had to include Alabama there. Now
is it Georgia even though I know they haven't done
much postseason wise? Sure, but we're looking at narratives right
(08:43):
now for Georgia is that talent wise, their roster is
how it's constructed. It's the best in college football? Right
and so here we are once again that Okay, Now
does Georgia have to live up to that expectation? Do
they have to live up to the hype? Ohio State?
Speaker 2 (08:57):
Okay? Or yes?
Speaker 3 (09:00):
Indiana yep, Well they just won the national championship, but
the coaches said.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
They're number six. They're a lot like Seattle in a
weird way. They definitely are.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
Yeah, I mean it's amazing, and it's because they haven't
been in those positions right consistently. And for Indiana never never, yeah,
absolutely never. At least Seattle has had Super Bowl appearances. Yeah,
it's been a minute in a trophy. Yeah, So I
mean they have been there, but it has has been
(09:30):
many years. But for Indiana not so much. And so
now when you look at Clemson in South Carolina, I
think there's something to be said about both coaches.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
They're okay right now with hey, don't talk about us.
We're okay. We don't need you guys talk about us.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
And I'm talking about the national media, regional media, local media, whatever.
We don't need all of the hype. And actually, from
a national perspective, right we're just worrying about us right now.
And maybe last year for both teams, all of the
national tension was a distraction and that impeded the ability

to forget about the pressure and just go out there
and play the game. It was almost like the pressure
did get to both teams. And of course injuries happened,
that's part of it. I do understand that, and both
teams had injuries, offensive line issues, you had to jump
(10:35):
people around different positions, those type of situations. But I
think this year, and this is a quote from Dabo
Sweeney as he was talking with Larry Williams of Tiger
Illustrated and now Tiger Illustrated is part of the on
three family, and Clemson's Dabo sweeneys on whether there have

been any standouts in fall camp and he's as quote,
everybody's just working. We're just a bunch of nobody's. We'll
see if anybody becomes somebody as we play some games.
Speaker 2 (11:12):

We're just a bunch of nobody's. That's almost like Steve
Spurrier esque right there. Yeah, I mean it's amazing. How
now it's you know, everybody else and we're over here
talking about the Roy Buss as Dabbo would talk about,

just in terms of, hey, nobody is talking about us.
We're just kind of the forgotten. And I think he
likes that. Yeah, And I even think right now Shane
Beemer is in the same position in terms of what
he's talked about, where he's mentioned several times that, hey, yeah,

I know nobody's going to give us any love. What
was it thirteenth, Oh yeah, or thirteenth or eleventh in
the in the preseason polls.

you guys had us in the top tier. This year,
even with basically the same roster, we're just no good

Okay, you guys, you know we're we're not focused on that,
and that's why. I think both coaches right now are
a okay with just sitting back and just focusing on
their team and they'll let the results play out based
on the field and not trying to live up to

all the hype and not so much the coaches having
to worry about it.

It's the players.

It's the noise that the players here and having to
live up to some of those expectations. And I think
it's a good thing for both schools right now. Oh.

I think it's wonderful in the sense that sometimes sometimes
you're handed more than you can handle.

And what I mean by that not.
Speaker 4 (13:19):
Necessarily maybe from a Dabo Sweeney standpoint, because he's used
to being in the national spotlight. You know, you have
the championships under his belt, so that's nothing that's not
necessarily new territory for him. But when you come to
South Carolina and all of a sudden, now you're catapulted
in the limelight of oh wow, you've got this Heisman
winning quarterback that he could potentially be the fifth.

Overall or the one of the first overall.
Speaker 4 (13:39):
In the draft, and like all the hype that came
with that, I do wonder just looking at that team
were they ready for that sort of attention, because there
is a burden that comes with that. There's just a
weight that naturally comes with that, and sometimes you get
that weight thrust upon you before you're ready to step
into and carry that weight. And I do wonder if
maybe it was just a little early there for South
Carolina last year. Maybe it would have been better if
(14:01):
they flew under the radar last year. Nobody was kind
of talking about it. Maybe I don't know, who knows,
Maybe the season looks a little bit different. And then
I also like what Dabo Sweeney says, we're nobody's and
maybe you will become somebody. And I think there's merit
in that because you're not owed anything here in the
college football landscape.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
You're just not.
Speaker 4 (14:21):
Even though you've got Alabama that the big brands and
they are being talked about, they've kind of earned it.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
I mean, you've got a lot.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
Of good, good faith and good will there with what
Nick Saban left behind. Even though what you think of
Alabama today isn't necessarily what Alabama once was with Nick Saban,
A lot of that good will carries over just because
of how good Alabama was for so long and Clemson,
you still have a little bit of that.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
Obviously, you still got Dabbo there, so that carries over.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
But from a South Carolina perspective, you don't really have
any of that. You're building it, and now you're seeing
from a Clemson perspective some of that good will wearing
off a little bit that. Yeah, now we do have
to go back out there and earn it again. We
have to prove it. We're not somebody. We don't have
one of the top quarterbacks in the nation on our team.
We've got a good roster, but there's still question marks.

So we've got to go out there and we've got
to show them, Hey, this is who Clemson is, and
right now we'll focus on us.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:10):
Well, and I would even question do we know what
Christopher of Zena is or yeah, yeah, we don't know.
So we say that we don't have a top quarterback.
Who who was saying Fernando Mendoza is a top quarterback
right last year?

Uh? Not many people, not till we got right there.
Speaker 4 (15:29):
No, even at the end, I still remember people questioning
Fernando Mendoza even when they were in the National championship.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Looking at it, like I still felt like people.
Speaker 4 (15:38):
Question not only Fernando Mendoza, but the but Indians well,
of course Indiana, Indiana.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
Yes, they they definitely questioned well, and they were questioning
Indiana in Indianapolis in the Big Ten Championship game. But
there's no doubt people question Fernando Mendoza. And that don't
get me wrong here. I'm not putting on orange colored
lenses and saying that Christopher Zena can burst onto the

scene like Fernando Mendoza. I don't know. I think there's
still a lot of question marks. He does seem to
be the guy that's going to be Clemson's quarterback, even
though there's a lot of discussion as far as Tate Renolds. Yeah,
true freshman coming in and can he push of Zena?
And I think Tate Reynolds is talented, but I just

can't see him taking over. I do think that Zena
from all things that I've heard and at least early
on in this camp, is that he seems to be
a leader.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
He seems to be rallying the guys.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
And of course there has to be an it factor
to these quarterbacks. We know that, and Lenora Sellers he
has that it factor. It just oozes off of Leonora
Sellers in terms of his personality all of that. But
there's also productivity that has to take place. So for
both of these quarterbacks, you have to go out there
and produce. And so Bosweeney is talking about is yes,
(17:02):
is what you're saying is that, Yeah, in all reality,
we are nobody right now, right, we got to go
earn it. And that's not a bad thing, yes, And
that's why he's not disparaging anybody. But it does sound
like he's sandbagging just a little bit that And that's
(17:22):
what I'm talking about. And you know, Steve Spurrier would
do that, Lou Holtz.

Would do that.

And I'm not just pinpointing those two out because they
coached at South Carolina, but I do think that those
are two that come to the top of mind. Bobby
Bowden would do it to a certain degree. And even
in basketball, there would be Dean Smith at times talking
about his team and I'm like, Dean, I mean, You've
got for the top freshmen in the country on your

team and two of them not even in the starting
lineup yet, you know, so you can't say that.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
You just can't. But I understand it.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
It's it's about the psychology side of coaching and what
you have to do to have these players unite and
be united for the common goal, and that's to go
out there and be productive and ultimately win. And you know,
play to the standard of each of those coaches and
play to the standard of each of those teams. And
(18:21):
I'm gonna say each of those teams. I'm talking South
Carolina and Clemson. But I do think that's unique. Last
year and this year. Both teams are in the same
type of position and the fan bases are hoping for
certain things to play out. And we did mention South
Carolina in the preseason poll, so they were eleventh in
(18:43):
the preseason poll out of the SEC and that's the
SEC media poll there, and then they were number five
last year.
Speaker 2 (18:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
So and that's where Shane Biemer saying, Okay, you had
his fifth last year, eleventh this year.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
But we've basically got the same team.
Speaker 3 (19:03):
Yeah, but we have a new offensive line coach, we
have a new offensive coordinator, and we've got Leonora Sellers
another year under his belt, got Nick carter back, We've
got the Dylan Stewart also, because you can put both
of those guys on that to all three team, Yes,
with Nick Carber and Dylan Stewart. And I've seen reports
(19:26):
that right now they're projecting Dylan Stewart could be the
number one ed rusher taken in the NFL Draft. Really, yes,
So I mean there's somewhat more of that hype. So
the point is is that is their disrespect to South
Carolina right now based on a four and eight record,
and ultimately it's probably warranted, and it's warranted for Clemson
(19:52):
that when you finish seven and six, based on especially
how the rosters were last year. But I do think
they're it was a little bit of maybe putting the
cart before the horse was South Carolina last year, that oh,
this is going to be the team that's, you know,
going to break the mold so to speak, for South
(20:13):
Carolina and be that differentiating type of team. But I'm
looking at it right now and saying, could this be
the season that they actually become that differentiating team?
Speaker 2 (20:25):
Because did they need and I.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
Don't say need necessarily like, oh, we need to go
four and eight so we be better next year? Right,
I'm saying it in terms of sometimes how you get
to that success side is falling short? Yeah, you gotta
be humbled a little. There's a little bit of that
and understanding what goes into it and what it takes

to win and the margins can be so thin, and
how you have to prepare yourself maybe just a little
bit differently, yeah, for.

A different outcome.
Speaker 3 (21:04):
And that's the crazy thing about athletic performance and even
the mental side of it. Sometimes it's just a little
extra thing that you need to do.
Speaker 2 (21:14):
Yeah.

And I also wonder too if there's a little bit
of coming to the understanding that just because people say
that you're good doesn't necessarily mean that you're good. Like
it's cool to have belief in yourself. Yes, But at
the same time, I don't know. I've seen time and
time again, and this isn't even from a sports perspective,
but maybe from a human perspective that you hear, oh man,
(21:38):
you're so good, you're so good that we buy into it,
that we kind of, I don't want to say forget
to put in the work, but we buy into it.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
Enough that we go, okay, well, yeah, oh I'm good. Yeah,
of course I'm good. I don't nobody can be me. Yeah,
I don't have to.
Speaker 4 (21:49):
Yeah, And that can really lead to that falling on
your face, so to speak, where you come off with
a four and eight season.
Speaker 3 (21:56):
That's right, Yes, And I see it in basketball quite
a bit, just in terms of players that are good
shooters and they'll be wrapping up practice, they're going to
get some extra shots up and they'll get two hundred
shots up like, oh, I'm good. And then there's another
guy that he gets five hundred shots up yep, and
(22:17):
then we see better performance from the guy who put
in some more shots.
Speaker 2 (22:22):
Yes.
Speaker 3 (22:22):
And I'm not saying that it is a direct linear
type of equation that, oh, if you shoot five hundred shots,
you're going to be much better than a guy that
shoots two hundred shots. I mean, there's obviously other factors
to it. The point is that sometimes it's just going
that little extra Can you stay another forty five minutes right,
keep your foot on.

The gas can? Yes?

Can you do those type of things that will help
you somewhat get over that hump? All right, we got

about Dabbo's comments and talking about South Carolina and I
am a loyal South Carolina fan. No, no, no secret there, uh.
And that is you know, whether you're in sports or

entertainment or business or whatever it may be, you're only
as good as your last performance. And if you're Clemson
in South Carolina, and look, South Carolina a lot of
problems last year. Now maybe they got them fixed, whether
(24:46):
it be new coaches, recruiting and shoring up. We do
know that South Carolina has three very talented people quarterback, wide, receiver,
defensive ends. We know who those guys are. Clemson, I
don't know a whole lot about them. Actually I usually
do because I have Clemson friends and all that and
(25:08):
keep up with them. So you talk about somebody being
under the radar, maybe Clemson's is the best place, you know,
I mean, and Richmond, I know you're a Clemson person.
I literally I mean they, I mean, I mean you
think about Clemson last year and they finished seventh and six,
and they had nine guys drafted in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (25:28):
Yeah, and all nine of those guys win in the
first five rounds.
Speaker 5 (25:33):
Correct, And they're gonna make rosters I'm sure, probably all
of them. And what that tells you is that they
if you've got I mean, they're well coached. And even
South Carolina had some guys in South Carolina, So what
happened or whatever? I mean, South Carolina's four and eight,
and I know they had about three or four swing games.
(25:55):
They might could have won them. They might could have
been reversed last year and been eight and four. They weren't,
that's the bottom line. And and they couldn't finish games.
So I'm very optimistic about South Carolina this year. I
really am. I I am and And and Clemson. I'm
(26:16):
gonna be uh interested because I'll watch them. I keep
up Clemson being uh up here in the upstate, and
uh my best friend and And is Clemson person, and she's, uh,
you know, we'll we'll keep up. And I have been,
and I'm I'm not at Clempson even though I'm a
Carolina family. Lets they're playing with playing against each other.
(26:39):
But so I think really that, like I said when
I started, you're only as good as the last time
you were on the floor, on the field, on the
stage where you were you know. Gosh, I went and
saved the trade game back in with a C. D. C.
Young gosh, I went to ac DC. God they sucked.
(27:02):
They were terrible last night.
Speaker 2 (27:03):
Oh you know, but no I did.
Speaker 5 (27:08):
But but let's just say you say something like that,
you don't see your favorite rock band or country singer
and they were terrible, and that's your impression, and they
come out where the next show they do and they
knock it out of the park, you know, for whatever
reason other than the lead singer was sick or whatever.
You can have any kind of issues you never know
(27:30):
that are going on within something that you're you're that
may be happening that you, as a spectator don't know. Okay,
I guess that's what I'm saying. And then all of
a sudden they turn around the next time and then
you make it right. So I guess that's what I'm saying.
(27:50):
At South Carolina and Clemson football, uh yeah, last year
was disappointing on both ends. So we'll see what happens
what they did between the previous performance and what the
new performance is going to be.
Speaker 3 (28:06):
Yeah, and again, and I think there's similarities as we've
talked about with situations with new staff members and especially
at key roles like offensive coordinator Kendall Brow's there at
South Carolina and of course getting the band back together,
so to speak, with Chad Morris coming back to Clemson
(28:28):
as a new offensive coordinator. So I think there's a
lot of still questions, but the fan bases have to
be intrigued, like, Okay, I want to see how this
is going to work out. And does that give these
fan bases a little bit more optimism going into the seasons.
Versus if the rosters and coaching staffs would have been
(28:52):
the same, I think there would have been a little
bit more of apathy heading into this season. Because I'm
starting to get a sense that people are get a
little bit more excited, and I think maybe that just
naturally happens too Rocky as you get close to the
beginning of the season, as we've talked about the season
of Hope, and so you start maybe believing that, Okay,
this is it, this is the year because we've made
(29:13):
some of these changes.
Speaker 5 (29:15):
What a great and I'll hang up Out is one
of great titles of an album. And while I wasn't
a big huge fan of the Police back in the day,
although I started, you know, you never It's like the
same thing with Led Zeppelin. I was not a big
led Zeppelin fan or not not a fan, but I
(29:36):
just didn't listen. But I never started appreciating that kind
of music, the Police, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and some
other of that music, back dating myself until I got older,
you know, as a as a young person, I just
hadn't and I was just locked in that this is
(29:58):
what I like, and I'm not going to listen. And
then you get older and I'm like, gosh, of mine,
I really would have loved to listen to this back
in when I was a teenager or back when and
when I was in college, and some of this stuff
that have been really good. But the name of the
album that the Police put out was Synchronicity. So that's

kind of what comes to minds as these are our teams,
the game Cocks and the Tigers get going, and they
got a lot of new favors. You've got a new
offensive coordinator on both teams. South Carolina's got a new
offensive line coach, you got Somesin's got a new quarterback.
South Carolina's got three talented players, and you get trying
(30:41):
to get people in sync and let's see how they do.

And so I started thinking, because man, some of the
music just again it's captivating, and what Rocky is talking

about and this is obviously spinning off of sports for
a moment, but because it made me think about timeless
music and standing the test of time. And I'm just
curious because when you think about like a Led Zeppelin,
a Rolling Stones, Police, the AC D C. Van Halen,

I mean you can there's several that you can put
on this list that you know.
Speaker 2 (32:20):
The Beatles obviously.
Speaker 3 (32:22):
From the sixties to somewhere there.
Speaker 4 (32:26):
In the eighties mid eighties maybe maybe let you get
like about an eighty eighty eighties, I'm maybe maybe, yeah,
And then it just seems that that period of time
because I mean, think about it, it's twenty twenty six.
I mean there's some music that's fifty years old that
we're still listening to, yeah, which yes, yes, and still

playing like in arenas and still like hype music come on, yes,
I mean. And so I'm curious, like, are there any
artists in the past five to teen years that we're
going to be listening to fifty years from now?
Speaker 2 (33:06):
Ooh, that's a m probably don't want to hear it.

But I could see Taylor Swift living that, like she
just seems to be that like that icon right now.
Then there are a lot of girls that grow up
on Taylor Swift and that know Taylor Swift and then
idolize her that that music could probably carry on.
Speaker 3 (33:30):
Oh that's a good question, see I And I'm also
probably not the one to specifically ask, because there's a
lot of artists that I'm not familiar with. Yeah, because
guess what I do default puts me back into the
seventies and eighties and early nineties, and because that was
(33:52):
the most impressionable time. That's when I was a kid
growing up in you know, early adult whatever it was.
So there's part to me that does need to recognize
that they're extremely talented artists out there right now. Yeah,
that I just might not be as familiar with. But
I also just don't know. And there's other factors that
(34:15):
go into it also because just think about how we
got music forty fifty years ago. That's totally different, completely different,
and it was limited also, and so it was that
scarcity type of situation. So it was almost like, man,
(34:36):
you had that music and you just listen to it
over and over until the tape ran out or too
you ruined your record, because I mean I remember playing records.
Oh yeah, that's how far back I go. And I
just wonder, though, even with like a Taylor Swift, yeah,
will her music stand the test of time, because it
blows me away that right now, like my kids, yeah,
(35:02):
who are twenty six, twenty four, and twenty two, they
will listen to some of the stuff that I listened
to growing up, and it's because it, oh, it's coming
back around all that yes, and so will there be
that recycling of some of the artists. But fifty years
from now, that's what I'm saying. I mean, yeah, that's
(35:24):
a big thing just in terms of how long Like
an aerosmith. Also, it's another one that I think of.
So it just it just made me think when Rocky
was talking about that. So I don't know, I'm just

than some of these new stores. But that's the beautiful
thing about it is that they're wanting to make it

trying to, you know, see what has been successful in
some other stores like the NFL, yes exactly, and then
model some of those things, but make it unique to
to what your foundation is, what your principles are. And
Melissa Levell does a great job as the the director
of advertising and Marketing, and I'm definitely going to get

on up there. But Ingles is doing a really good job,
and I know they're planning on opening up other stores
and even revamping some stores across the region as well,
So they definitely want again to make Ingles feel like
