Speaker 1 (00:00):
Exploring the latest headlines and in depth conversations. It's the
Richmond Weavers Show on one oh four nine Fox Sports
Upstate presented by Ingles Low Prices, love the savings, now
for riches, take on sports. Here's Richmond Weaver.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Ready to roll this Monday right here on one O
four nine Fox Sports Upstate. And of course it's the
Monday edition of the Richmond Weaver Show, presented by our
good friends at Ingles Markets. We are in full force
here in studio in this hot, steamy, humid.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Day in the Upstate. Little toasty, little.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Toasty, but we're cool in this studio right here overlooking
North Main Street, downtown Greenville. As you heard the sultry
voice right there, mister Trey Falco producer extraordinaire behind the
board and behind the mic as usual, and we will
try to keep you entertained for the next two hours.
We'll be moving xdreamly fast, but we want you to
(01:02):
join the conversation. Eighty six four two four zero five
to four eight zero. Gain that number is eight six
four two four zero five four eight zero because hot
off the presses.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
Ah ah, here we go.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
They dropped at noon today the ap Pole preseason Top
twenty five for college football because we're basically two weeks
away from week donut. We will have games. Yes, we
do have some NFL news to talk about Dallas Cowboys
making some moves trying to shore up that defense. But
(01:40):
right now, it's college football time. It is, yes, it
is though it is here because we also have high
school football starting. We had jamborees this past Friday, and
so kickoff for true high school action will be this Friday.
So you know, when you start having high school football,
that is almost the prelude or the precluding college football starting.
(02:05):
So this is that opportunity where we're really going to
start having some action to talk about to and right now, Okay, AP,
give us some content to debate, give us some content
to talk about.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
And they did do that.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
As again, the AP Top twenty five poll was released
just a few hours ago, and I don't know if
there's any real surprises. Yeah, Ohio state number one, that
makes sense, that's tracked, Oregon number two, Georgia number three,
Notre Dame number four, Texas number five, and there's Indiana
(02:48):
sitting at number six. That was the same spot they
were for the Coach's poll.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Right, So they do.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
Believe in Indiana being consistent that this is what we
think they are. We don't think they're national championship contender
at this moment. Now I say that, of course they
probably do, putting them ranked number six overall.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
I get that.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
But we'll just keep going back to it each time
these polls come out after a season and after a
national champion has been crowned, and we'll still complain about it.
At least I will. There's other people that they really
don't care or all. They don't view it the same
way that I do, and I get it. But I
think Trey, you and I are on the same page
(03:34):
here and we consistently talk about it.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
So we'll do it once again.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Because we did it for the Coach's Poll, we'll do
it for the AP pole here in any other poll
out there that doesn't have the national champion ranked number
one preseason?
Speaker 4 (03:47):
Right?
Speaker 3 (03:47):
What are we doing?
Speaker 2 (03:52):
And especially in today's world of college athletics, right where
you have no idea the rosters because of roster chaos
that happens for these universities and these football teams, these
basketball teams, whatever it might be. So why not it's
(04:12):
almost by default easier to go ahead and say, right, Pens,
I'm Indiana is going to be number one, Yeah, because
we just don't know about everybody else, right, I mean
maybe it looks good on paper, but I mean I
looked at Indiana's transfer portal class and.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
It looks pretty good.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Also, I know you lost Fernando Mendoza, Yeah, Heisman Trophy winner.
I get it, all of that, But these other schools,
how are we to say that Indiana is not at
this point? So that's where I keep coming back to.
In life, we seem to overcomplicate things way too often,
(04:50):
and this just seems one of those opportunities now just
by default. Uh okay. And I'm not saying make it easy.
I want you to do your homework.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
I do.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Of course, there's also just the aspect of what makes
logical sense, at least from my lens, And it just
makes logical sense that until they're beaten their preseason number one.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
That's just the reality of it right now.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
I would say the same thing and basketball, I would
say the same thing. In softball, I would say the
same thing and NFL. I would say the same thing
in NBA. That's why the Knicks when the power rankings
come out for the NBA.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
They should be number one. It should be yeah, Seattle.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
And the power rankings for the NFL, they should be
number one because they just came off of a championship.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
It makes too much perfect sense.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
But that's why it gets frustrating to me, because it
makes too much sense. But we don't want to follow
the sensical way here. We want to create. Oh, we've
got to do our own deciphering who thinks going to
be the best.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
And I get it.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
I understand that. Do that for everybody else except the
team who just won a championship. That's my only point.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
No, I agree with that completely.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
And you know, it goes back to something that I
believe we talked about this last week, but the power
of the brand, right and that like you're Alabama's, you're Georgia's,
your your your main stays there. And now I'm not
even talking about college football. I mean, you can go
into basketball with your blue blood. You could go into
the NFL, you can go in the NBA, it doesn't matter.
We look at these teams, I say, we as in
you know those that are doing the rankings, you know
(06:26):
the media, whether it be the AP polls or whether
it be right here on the channel in our studio.
They do this all the time that they tend to
give way to brands before they do like it, it
doesn't necessarily matter who won last year. They look at
it and it's still like not that it doesn't matter,
but you look at it from an Indiana perspective, and
(06:47):
I almost I almost feel like it's probably a bit
of well, yeah they won, but they haven't earned it,
like they haven't. This is this is the only one,
So why should we put them in the top. Why
should we expect them to be good this year? And like,
I get that to a degree, but to your point,
there's so much turnover right now on the rosters here
with the new nil era and the transfer portal, that
(07:10):
we really don't know what any of these teams are
gonna look like going in this new season, because how
many times have we seen it where we look at it. Hell,
you can look even into our own backyard, look at
last year with Clemson, who pretty much the entire team it.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
Felt like, came back.
Speaker 4 (07:25):
So they were projected to be really high there ye
number four, number four, and even had some national pundits
taking them as the national champions. Yes, and no offense
to the Clemson Tigers, but they fell off. I mean
there were what seven wins, seven and six, So I
mean that is nowhere near this season that the national
pundits thought they were going to have. But we see
(07:46):
it time and time again that oh, but this roster,
let's see, this could be the next national champion. These
are the guys, this is their year and they end
up having a drop off because you just can't predict
what's gonna happen until they hit the field.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
That's right, and even more so with the transfers that
are coming in.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
And that's my point.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
That's where I'm getting to this aspect of let's just
take it for what it is, because we keep hearing
the narratives as far as yeah, we really don't know.
And I'm even talking from first hand experience. I mean,
I've been around some of these coaches and even from
college basketball where I've been doing the so Con Fast
(08:28):
Break Summer Tour series where we have visited ten out
of the eleven institutions in the Southern Conference and still
just waiting on the citadel and we had it all
lined up and unfortunately there was a death in the
family of one of the coaches there. Yeah, so that
changed things up from that perspective. And that's just life.
It's just the way it is. But we'll get that
(08:50):
reschedule with at Conroy and the Citadel down there to
have that.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
But I tell you, the theme for all of the
coaches this summer was we think we're good, but we
don't know right. This was with coaches.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
I mean, they're even trying to understand how good their
team is going to be. So you think that us
media people, us fans that we're going to have a
better pulse of how good these teams.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
Are and we're not even around them. These coaches are
around these players we have we have no idea what
we really don't.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
But I'm all about I don't mind having the polls
at all because I do think it's part of the
pageantry of college football and I don't want to relinquish
some of that just because of things are evolving.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
Because the polls, that's just not something that is common
with the NFL.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
That's one of the unique things about college football in
the NFL. Yes, you can have some of the power rankings,
it's not the same as a preseason poll. It's just
not and I don't know how to describe it why
it's different, but it's just not because it seems like
there's one entity. You've got your coaches and then you've
got your AP and that's what we all lean on
in terms of at least trying to understand how good
(10:13):
each of our teams are going to be for a
respective season. But when you look at the AP poll
right now, again we can move on. It's not changing.
They're not going to put Indiana up there. I get it.
But to your point, with the brands, that is definitely
a theme.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
The usual suspects. They're there.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
Okay, we just went over the top six Ohio State, Oregon, Georgia,
Notre Dame, Texas, Indiana or the top six. Then you've
got Miami just played in the National championship and of
course they lost to Indiana in the National Championship.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
Texas A and m at number eight, Ole Miss at
number nine.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Really, okay, that's guess what I have coming back though
it's not Lane Kiffin and it's not Pete Golden. I know, yes,
Pete Golden is coming back as the head coach. As
he served that little interim run and technically it wasn't interim.
They went in and gave it to him for that
postseason run. But they got Trinidad Chamblat Shambliss coming back quarterback,
(11:16):
and that does change things.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
I get it. Oklahoma at number.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
Ten, okay, yeah, Brenton Venables, okay, all right, Lane Kiffin
and Lsu at eleven. Texas Tech at number twelve. We'll
see they've got money. Yeah, can it buy them success?
Alabama at number thirteen. I mean it's a little low
from what you would expect for an Alabama. I thought
the brand might have bought a little bit more credit. Yeah,
(11:43):
that is definitely lower than most people would think in
terms of Alabama. And when you look at Alabama ranked
thirteenth in the AP preseason Top twenty five, that snaps
a seventeen year streak of being ranked in the preseason
top ten.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Yes, which was the second longest streak in AP pole history.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
So Florida State was sixteen seasons in a row from
nineteen eighty seven to two thousand and two. Ohio State
fourteen seasons. Because now they've been ranked there in the
top ten from twenty and thirteen to this season. Again,
Alabama had their streak from two thousand and nine to
twenty and twenty six seventeen snap. But at Southern cal
(12:31):
who's had the longest streak being ranked in the AP
preseason top ten nineteen seasons from nineteen sixty five to
nineteen eighty three.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
A long time, long time.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
Now, Apa Pole has changed ye over the years and
almost how we evaluate things from that perspective, But that's
a long time for Alabama not being in the top ten.
So is the brand the wearing off a little bit
for the Crimson Tide.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
Gotta win?
Speaker 5 (13:04):
I mean, that's it's how you keep it alive, that's right,
and that's why I mean, I look at these teams
and there's no doubt that some of them do have
that brand.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
But you have to win at the end of the day.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
And with Kaylen de Boor, that was obviously going to
be a tough task coming in following Nick Saban. But
I do think that when you look at Kaylen de Bor,
I think he have he can't have success at Alabama.
I just don't know if they're going to give him
enough time. And that's the problem because there's a lot
(13:38):
of schools they would love to be sitting there still
ranked just in the top twenty five. Yeah, each and
every year, they would be completely happy with it ranked
in the top fifteen. Just have a contention for fighting
for a playoff berth, especially now that you have twelve
teams that can get in. And I think ultimately we're
(13:59):
going to see more than that. Yeah, as there are
no doubt they will expand it to what number that
remains to be seen. But Alabama is just a different
standard and we know that. And I'm not saying that's
from an SEC perspective. I'm just saying it's an Alabama perspective.
Does no matter what conference they're in, it's just Alabama, No.
Speaker 4 (14:19):
I mean, you know it coming as a Cowboys fan
and even the Clemson fan there with their little run
that it's it begins to set a different standard when
it comes to winning. Your expectations rise, and Ashley is
not only a fan but an organization. So whether that's
whether it's right or wrong, it doesn't matter. It is
what it is. That's that's just how it is. When
you start winning like that, you set a different standard.
And unfortunately for Kaylin to Borr, it's hard being the
(14:42):
guy to follow the guy it's Nick Saban, you knew
step it in.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
Those are some big shoes to feel.
Speaker 4 (14:47):
I mean, you're almost set up for failure from the
beginning unless you're unless you're this another legendary coach stepping
in like that, another Nick Saban, which those don't grow
on trees.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
But no, they do not.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
And I think there's also a situation that has happened
even for Kaylen de Boor is he's taken over Alabama
and a time in college athletics that we haven't seen before.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (15:13):
So if he would have taken over for Nick Saban,
say Nick Saban would have started earlier at Alabama still
had the same type of success, but left in two
thousand and fifteen, oh yeah, yeah, and then Kaylen de
Boor took over, it might have been completely different because
rosters were different, how you were able to manage rosters,
(15:35):
all of that. You might have been able to continue
that gravy train, so to speak, that Alabama had going on.
But now with all of the upheaval in terms of
all of the different rules that have changed and the
lawsuits that are happening right now, I mean it completely
(15:56):
as I do think it's a factor in one of
the reasons why it can be even harder now to
be able to follow success. But even the times were
everything was consistent, we still saw it was hard.
Speaker 3 (16:10):
Oh yeah, yeah, to be the guy to follow the guy.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
So it's almost did that really have much of a
hindrance on it or not? I mean, I think it did,
but I say that, but there's also history that says no,
it it doesn't matter, right, It's just hard, it is.
Speaker 4 (16:29):
But I mean, to your point, it is a totally
different college landscape if he takes over in twenty fifteen,
because I mean, at that point, you know, you've got
the big names that are kind of hoarding all the players,
right because that's where that's where.
Speaker 3 (16:39):
They want to go.
Speaker 4 (16:40):
That's where you got to win to get championships and now.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
And you have the depth sitting there and that's why
those teams could compete because of the depth exactly.
Speaker 4 (16:47):
So it inevitably, at least from the outside looking at
somebody that hasn't coached, it feels like it would make
it harder with the way everything is set up right
now in the landscape, it just feels like.
Speaker 2 (16:56):
It would Yeah, all right by you at number fourteen
and by he's going to be sneaky this year in
the Big twelve. Southern Cal at fourteen. That's definitely another one.
We keep wanting to prop Southern Cal up. And maybe
it's because at one point they had the longest streak
(17:16):
of being ranked in the top ten in AP whole
preseason history nineteen years.
Speaker 3 (17:24):
But that ended in nineteen eighty three. Okay, I mean.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
Exactly, we're forty plus years past that. Hello, the brands
still continue now again. I know Pete Carroll came in
in won national championship. Of course it was voided or
vacated all of that, I do get that, but still
and then lost in the national championship game there against
Texas Michigan number sixteen, Washington number seventeen. Yeah, here we go,
(17:55):
a little run of the Big ten Penn State number eighteen. Really, yes,
Matt Campbell taking over as he was the head coach
at Iowa State, of course, taken over for James Franklin
SMU at nineteen, Tennessee at twenty, Utah at twenty one,
Iowa at twenty two. I mean, boring football Iowa, but
(18:17):
they're ranked in the top twenty five. Houston at number
twenty three, Louisville at number twenty four, and Missouri rounds
out the top twenty five coming from the SEC. They're
the Missouri Tigers at number twenty five. And obviously you
didn't hear anything about the Clemson Tigers. No love for
(18:39):
South Carolina the whole state, No, nope. And Clemson was
ranked in the Coach's Poll just barely twenty third.
Speaker 3 (18:47):
Yeah, yeah, twenty third.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
But now Clemson not ranked in the AP top twenty five.
And it's the first time being unranked in the preseason
AP top twenty five since two thousand and eleven, Dabo
Sweeney's third full year as the Tigers coach.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (19:08):
Yeah, that's a long stretch too. And I'm telling you,
I think Dabo likes it this way. I think he
does the chip on the shoulder, proving people wrong, whatever
(19:28):
it might be, however you want to describe it. It
does seem like, yeah, this is playing right into Dabo
Sweeney's mantra, his cards, all of that, and we know
somebody will make a run up, oh yeah, into the
top twenty five. They consistently do. But also, which team
(19:49):
finishes outside the top twenty five that's in the top ten, right, now,
because we do know what's going to happen.
Speaker 3 (20:00):
I've got more thoughts on that as.
Speaker 2 (20:02):
We continue this Monday edition of The Richmond Weaver Show
presented by Ingles Markets. Come on into Weaverville, join the conversation.
Eight six four two four zero five four eight zero.
Let me know your thoughts. The AP Top twenty five
preseason pol is were just a few weeks away from
college football. Much more of this Monday edition of the
(20:22):
Richmond Weaver Show presented by Ingles Markets coming up after
this here on one O four nine Fox Sports Upstate.
Eight six four triple seven ninety five ninety three. That
is the text line here on this Monday edition of
the Richmond Weaver Show, presented by our good friends at
Ingles Markets. Again that text line eight six four triple
(20:43):
seven ninety five at ninety three. You can chime in
on that text line. Come on into Weaverville.
Speaker 3 (20:49):
We've got a.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
Lot to talk about. The AP Top twenty five poll
is out. We've had preseason action in the NFL. The
Dallas Cowboys get a big victory over the defending Super
Bowl champion, Yeah, Seattle Seahawks.
Speaker 3 (21:04):
So I guess now we say, well, sorry, Seattle. Let's
just say, what does it mean?
Speaker 1 (21:09):
Does it?
Speaker 3 (21:09):
Does it mean exactly?
Speaker 2 (21:12):
If it's the Cowboys, yes, it means right, Yes, it
means something. But if it was you know, if the
Cowboys lose, it wouldn't mean anything. But the Cowboys won,
so they beat the Seahawks, so they're better at the
Super Bowl year.
Speaker 3 (21:24):
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
I wish the transitive properties worked.
Speaker 3 (21:30):
Like that, but that doesn't work out. I can promise
you that.
Speaker 4 (21:34):
Let's just hope those transitive properties don't work for the
Cleveland Browns because man, that preseason was whole.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
It was ugly.
Speaker 2 (21:41):
Yes, And again that goes back to what do you
take from NFL preseason games.
Speaker 3 (21:47):
I don't know. I don't take a whole lot.
Speaker 2 (21:49):
And I joke it's tongue in cheek when I'm talking
about the Dallas Cowboys knocket off the Super Bowl defending
Super Bowl champions. I get it there with the Seattle Seahawks,
but you have to be careful that you're not buying
into so much. I mean, and we'll talk more about it,
but like Ty Simpson his performance with the Rams.
Speaker 3 (22:10):
It's like, all right, here we go.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
Yep, man, the Rams know how to draft man, they
did it. He might even be pushing Matthew Stafford. Yeah,
now I'm being.
Speaker 3 (22:21):
Very but I could see it being said, but I
believe it.
Speaker 2 (22:24):
But the point is is that, oh, yes, the Rams
knew what they were doing taking Ty Simpson.
Speaker 3 (22:30):
We don't know yet, right, it's one game. Slow down, everybody.
Speaker 4 (22:35):
And here's the thing I would wager most, if not all,
of these NFL teams know what they're doing when it
comes to drafting.
Speaker 3 (22:42):
I mean, they're not.
Speaker 4 (22:43):
Taking a flyer on a guy just to take a
flyer if they're going in the first round. They're seeing something.
That's the way I look at it, at least, like
I know, like from fans, it's really easy when a
guy ends up not panning out.
Speaker 3 (22:54):
This front office just doesn't know what they're doing. They're awful.
Speaker 4 (22:57):
And you know, maybe there are some organizations and there
are organizations that just don't draft well, and that that's true,
but for the most part, they're doing homework on these guys.
They're seeing something, and yeah, you get your bust that
that happens.
Speaker 3 (23:11):
But from a fan perspective.
Speaker 4 (23:13):
Do we really know more than those guys that are
sitting in the front office? Again, you could probably point
to some organizations like I might look at the Browns
and go, hey, do you do you really what's your
homework look like, let's let's let's triple check it before
you draft some of these guys.
Speaker 3 (23:27):
But for the most part, I don't know.
Speaker 4 (23:29):
I feel like I feel like they're in that position
for a reason.
Speaker 3 (23:32):
No, I would agree with you.
Speaker 2 (23:33):
There's definitely a discrepancy between the functional organizations and then
dysfunctional organizations. And that's where I look at you know,
how are these organizations run? And you can even look
at it from athletic departments in universities and institutions. How
are they run? And there's there's no doubt there's better
(23:56):
leaders in some schools than not. And just like there's
better lead and better owners in the NFL, NBA. That's
just the reality of it, because that's that's the reality
of every industry, every walk of life, right when you
look at it from a professional standpoint. But to your point,
I mean, there's no doubt they have some type of
(24:19):
ability to be in.
Speaker 3 (24:22):
That particular role. Right if they didn't, they're gone.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
Yeah, Well, but you keep making the same mistakes though,
And that's where I just look at some of these
organizations and maybe they should be gone. Oh yeah, Maybe
some of these guys are just hanger around type of
people that for whatever reason, it's just hard to let
(24:45):
them go to get fired whatever it is.
Speaker 3 (24:48):
And nobody wants to fire people.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
Nobody don't know wake I mean, maybe there are some
people that wake up, they all right.
Speaker 3 (24:54):
Let somebody go today. Let let's go right, cut bait.
The most part us human beings.
Speaker 2 (25:01):
We don't like confrontation like that, right, and you know,
because you never know when it's going to be you
sitting in the other chair.
Speaker 3 (25:08):
Oh yeah, and you're getting let go.
Speaker 4 (25:11):
And I do wonder like some of these organizations when
you talk about like not really drafted well. And the
two that come to mind won the Jets and too
the Browns. Yes, And I think there's one common nominator there,
and that's ownership. Of course, I wonder how much it
is with because we look at these guys in the
front office and and these these analysts for the teams
that are doing the evaluations on these prospects, and I
(25:33):
wonder how often that we don't see where the owner
steps in and goes, no, no, are you talking about
I really I really like this guy, you better draft him,
and the evaluators going yeah, but like now because I
mean we we we got a grade on this guy,
but he's he's probably not gonna go to the third he'll.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
Probably be there, and the owners going, no, you take him? Now?
Speaker 2 (25:53):
How often that happens? Yes, See, that's where the mistakes
are made. Yeah, that's when there's problems within your organ
There is where the dysfunction comes in. Because good leaders
they understand where the boundaries are as far as stepping
in versus allowing people that you hired to be in
(26:14):
that position and allow them to do their job right.
Speaker 3 (26:18):
And it can be a challenge.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
Though, because there's egos that play a role into it,
and also that fear of I don't want to be
shown that I was wrong, And that's the challenging We
talked about it with Brian Kite on Friday, Daily Discipline
dot com author, and there's something about us human beings
(26:42):
that we just don't want to be wrong.
Speaker 3 (26:45):
Ego.
Speaker 2 (26:46):
Yes, it is, it's three letters. It's ego. I mean
it happens to me. I don't want to be wrong.
I don't like it when I've made mistakes or you know,
but I know we're looking at these polls and predicting games.
I mean, I'm sorry that the players and the coaches
didn't follow through. I mean I laid it out how
they were supposed to do it, and if they don't
(27:09):
do it, sorry, how's that on me?
Speaker 3 (27:12):
Yeah? They failed to execute exactly. We got to make
sure we remember that, all right.
Speaker 2 (27:17):
So, speaking of failing to execute and making sure that
I'm putting context in the right thing. So, as I
talked about the top twenty five ye and I mentioned
Iowa and said, oh, they're boring. Yeah, that's true, they're boring.
But one of my good friends, Marty Richter, the head
(27:38):
coach for the men's basketball team at usc Upstate, he
actually texted in and said, Iowa boring. Good team and
great coach. Almost like, hey, Bud, Iowa, it's okay to
be boring. And I agree one hundred percent. Now I
said it in a disparaging way, but boring doesn't mean bad, right,
(28:00):
Boring just means in this context, boring just means boring football.
I mean it's in relative to today's college football. What
do we talk about? How many times offense offense offense?
It's the aesthetics. Oh yeah, and Iowa just doesn't have
aesthetically pleasing football in relation to what we see with
(28:20):
college football today and what fans want. But there's something
about winning. I mean Kirk Ferentz, he's been there for
a long time and is a consistent winner. I mean,
he's a Hall of Fame type of coach and there's
nothing wrong with his style of play. But that doesn't
(28:42):
mean it can't be boring and it also can't be good.
Oh yeah, boring doesn't mean bad, it is my point. Yeah,
I mean you could have the opposite can also be true.
You can have flashy and bad. Look at the Bengals.
Speaker 4 (28:52):
The Bengals are flashy with just the high flying plays,
but because they don't have a defense, they're having to
overcome such a big deficit.
Speaker 3 (28:59):
Joe Burrow's asked to do so much.
Speaker 4 (29:02):
Their record doesn't show what the offense shows.
Speaker 3 (29:05):
I mean that offense is flashy.
Speaker 4 (29:06):
So the Bengals are a fun team to watch, but
what are they doing from a record standpoint?
Speaker 3 (29:12):
Yeah, at the end of the day, it is all
about winning, is we do know that.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
And consistently though you will hear people talk about, oh,
you don't want to play at Iowa, Yeah, you just
don't because it's a tough place to play.
Speaker 3 (29:26):
They'll put you in the mud. And that's not literal.
Speaker 2 (29:29):
I'm just talking about how they'll slow it down and
grind it out, all of that, and then sometimes it
is in the mud. Yeah, it just goes to the
weather there in Iowa. So uh, and one of my
best friends in high school growing up, and maybe that's why.
Speaker 3 (29:45):
I did take a little bit of shot at Iowa. Here.
Speaker 2 (29:49):
It might have been because Paul McGruder, one of my
best friends growing up in high school, he for a
period of time lived in Iowa. Oh, so he was
a huge Iowa Hawkeye fan. And then when he moved
to Georgia, I was a Michigan football fan because I
love the Helmets when I was in middle school. So
(30:10):
we had this rivalry there between Iowa and Michigan. And
so maybe that's one of the reasons why I did
take a little bit of shot at the Allahawkeyes right there.
Speaker 3 (30:19):
It's funny how our childhood shape. I was like, oh,
are you kidding me?
Speaker 2 (30:24):
I mean, it's the number one shaper of all I
guess maybe your parents, but yeah, But my point is
that's all within your childhood, right.
Speaker 3 (30:32):
And I know I've joked to several people.
Speaker 2 (30:36):
That now are having young kids and everything, and now
I sound like I'm this wise fatherly person because I've
got three that are grown adults and two step that
are now in their teenage years. So this is not
me saying, oh, I'm better looking down on people that
(30:58):
are just in the beginnings stages of parenting. I'm just
saying it because and I've said this to my kids too,
is that I just live life longer than you have
been on the earth longer. Yeah, so I've experienced more things.
And so one thing that I truly experienced is that
once they get to a certain age, when you start
getting around that fifteen sixteen ish, kids are pretty much
(31:22):
baked at that point. They are I mean the influence
that you have on them and how you have shaped them. Now,
of course there's things that can change, and you know,
an evolution maturation process can still happen, but it's more
about they're deciding it.
Speaker 3 (31:41):
Yeah, you know before.
Speaker 2 (31:43):
That, hey, they're just like, oh, okay, this is what
mom and dad say to do. Sure, you know, that's
part of it, and this is how you know we're
going to function as a family, this is how we're
going to function in society, all of that. But yeah,
once they get to a certain point, they're baked. And
that's so my point is that in your childhood, your
parents and just your friend group there in those developmental years.
(32:08):
I mean, at some point then you get baked. And
and I don't mean baked. Some people do obviously, but
I'm just saying how they're shaped. So to your point,
I mean, our childhood is huge.
Speaker 3 (32:22):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 2 (32:22):
So one of the reasons why I'm such a huge
Dallas Cowboys fan because I just remember distinctly seeing the Star.
Speaker 3 (32:29):
I was like, oh wow, okay, and they were winning.
That helps. That helps.
Speaker 4 (32:33):
If you saw the Star and they were terrible, like
you probably wouldn't be as maybe.
Speaker 2 (32:37):
Not, Yeah, it might have been that impactful, yea, from
a win loss perspective and what team was going to
be my favorite team growing up. But there was also
I mean there was so much even at that time
America's team that was a mantra and you know, so
you would hear that consistently and you're like, oh, well,
(32:58):
I live in America, I gotta pull for them. I've
got to pull for that team right there, and again
that star and the power of that star. All right, again,
the text line is eight six' four triple seven ninety
five ninety. Three and we did Have dylan And spartanburg
chiming in on the text line as we were talking
ABOUT nfl organizations and being, dysfunctioned and you had mentioned
(33:20):
The browns and The jets having a challenge Come Draft,
day And dylan, says The browns and The jets seem
to be in a constant cycle of the Movie Draft.
Speaker 3 (33:31):
Day well beside, You, well The browns were highlighted in that.
Speaker 2 (33:35):
Movie, well, yeah They, yes that's, right and in all
of the upheaval that was going on between player, personnel general, manager,
ownership all of. That AND i would imagine those type
of scenes are somewhat similar that you might see in certain.
(33:59):
Situation and again anytime there's player, personnel Because i've been
in those coaches meetings WHEN i was assistant coach and
when you're trying to evaluate maybe adjustments to the starting,
lineup maybe who you're, recruiting AND i can tell you
from a recruiting, STANDPOINT i mean there is no doubt
(34:21):
because each assistant, coach they would have like their designated
areas as far as where they would recruit and maybe
based on you, know what was going to be needed
for the upcoming. Season you, know did you need to
get more heighth did you need to get big, men
did you need more guard, play more wing, play whatever
it might. Be so you had your designated guys that
(34:45):
you would be, recruiting, right but you couldn't take, everybody
and of course not everybody's going to choose you, either
but in terms of like who you're going to make.
Speaker 3 (34:57):
Offers, to.
Speaker 2 (34:59):
And some heated discussions with the assistant coaches in the
head coach BECAUSE i mean you wanted to defend who
you wanted to have the head coach ultimately make an
offer to because you believed in.
Speaker 3 (35:11):
That, yeah, yes.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
Exactly so THERE'S i MEAN i remember some, Man, YEAH
i mean, nothing no fights or anything like, that but
there would be some some highly spirited debates that would
be going, on and you had to do a real
good job of making sure that you didn't take it
(35:34):
personally because that's when you know would cross the line
and you would never say, anything you know, that or
you tried not to to where you would cross that
line where somebody could take it personally or personal you read.
Speaker 4 (35:50):
On the same, topic but how like when you're defending your,
guy like do you, know like do you have to
have kind of an idea of like the other like
the other person who they're scouting, out like you if
you say you're going to toe to toe With let's
say It's Jeremy, green he's the other, guy And jeremy's, like, oh.
Speaker 3 (36:05):
Want this got to be a part of the. TEAM
i want this.
Speaker 4 (36:07):
Guard you go out there and you're, like, yeah but
he can't because he wears size eleven. Shoes like you,
know do you do you do you do enough in
depth analysis now or you know he pulls his jumper
like whatever it might.
Speaker 2 (36:16):
Be, No, unfortunately you probably didn't have the time to
evaluate as much as the other assistant coach did or
even sometimes the head coach and ultimately the head coach
would have the decision or would make the.
Speaker 3 (36:31):
Decision, no it was more.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
Based on this player has these. Attributes this is what
we're looking.
Speaker 3 (36:39):
For this is the.
Speaker 2 (36:40):
Fit this is going to be a better fit in
this situation based on our current roster and what they can.
Deliver and there could be domino effects that were part of. It, like,
yeah but if we get this, guy then his best
friend is this.
Speaker 3 (36:55):
Player, yeah one of.
Speaker 2 (36:56):
THOSE i, mean there's so many different factors that go into.
It but, yeah sometimes it would be hard to have
a true good evaluation for the other players that you
might be somewhat competing against in terms of being able to.
Speaker 3 (37:15):
Offer and then.
Speaker 2 (37:16):
The the comical part of it was you could have
all of these spirited debates and these discussions and make
the offer and then they wouldn't even decide to go
to your school.
Speaker 3 (37:32):
Gowhere committed somewhere else right, back that's.
Speaker 2 (37:35):
Right, yeah they're like, no, YEAH i mean we're Not
we're going to go in a different.
Speaker 3 (37:40):
Direction so that is part of.
Speaker 2 (37:42):
It, okay we got to get back to THE ap
Poll top twenty. Five all, right we've got some interesting
things going, on as we've talked about just in terms
of THE Ap top twenty five preseason. Poll and this
is interesting because we've talked about it so every year
for the.
Speaker 3 (38:01):
Past twenty three.
Speaker 2 (38:04):
Seasons every year for the past twenty three seasons except
for twenty and, nineteen it's the only year there has
been at least one Preseason top ten team that finished
the year, unranked, Unranked, well we know one of.
Speaker 3 (38:24):
Them last.
Speaker 2 (38:24):
Year this was The Clemson. Tigers that's, Right, yeah there you,
go that's one of. Them so every year for the
past twenty three years except twenty and, nineteen there has
been at least one preseason top ten team that finished
the year. Unranked so reminder of the top Ten Ohio, State, Oregon,
Georgia Notre, dame And. Texas there's your top five six through, Ten, Indiana, Miami,
(38:52):
TEXAS a and M, Ole miss And.
Speaker 3 (38:55):
Oklahoma, okay all, right.
Speaker 2 (39:02):
Which one of those top ten do you think that's
not going to be ranked in the top twenty, five
not the top. Ten, yeah it's not saying that they
fell out of the top. Ten they completely fell out
of the entire top twenty five at the end of
(39:23):
the regular.
Speaker 4 (39:23):
Season i'm willing to believe In. INDIANA i don't Think
indiana falls that. Far, okay my cut.
Speaker 3 (39:32):
Leans towards Maybe Old.
Speaker 2 (39:33):
Miss that feels like the odd man out to. Me,
yeah for, me it feels Like Old miss In. Oklahoma,
YEAH i feel like the odd men, out like they
kind of snuck in the top. Ten, Yeah And i'm
A Brent vinnables. FAN i think he's a really good.
Coach he's, STILL i, think learning the head coaching, position
(39:54):
BUT i think if you give him, TIME i think
he can have a lot of.
Speaker 3 (39:58):
Success but that's.
Speaker 2 (40:01):
The one WHERE i that's just a knee jerk, reaction
that's just a gut reaction there that maybe It's. Oklahoma and, also,
yes maybe it's Ole miss BECAUSE i don't know how
MUCH i believe In Pete.
Speaker 3 (40:13):
Golding.
Speaker 2 (40:13):
Now they had an amazing little run right there postseason
after all of the chaos and upheaval there With Lane
kiffen and his exit out of there heading TO. Lsu
BUT i felt that was almost like a rallying cry
for Ole miss last, year AND i think we're almost
(40:35):
like utilizing that As, okay let's keep propping up Ole miss,
here yeah and have, them you, know there in the top.
TEN i know they've got a really good. Quarterback oh,
yeah they do have a good. Roster from offensive, perspective,
DEFENSE i do think they'll be. Good and obviously The
(40:55):
Luke farelli, situation the linebacker that was transferring cow To
clemson and then he was On clemson's campus and then
everything that went down with all the text messages and
him getting basically recruited while he was already enrolled there At,
clemson And Dabbo sweeney of course was not happy with
that and Beat golden, basically eh.
Speaker 3 (41:19):
Is what it is right. Now we're moving.
Speaker 2 (41:21):
On, sorry and that's just. It this is the world
of college athletics right. Now but that's A i don't.
Know and of course you, know there's another one That
i'm looking at sitting there at number, eight just because when.
Speaker 3 (41:36):
Have we ever believed in?
Speaker 2 (41:38):
Them? Right but That's TEXAS a AND. M. NOW i
don't think they'll be in the top. Ten they could
still be in the top twenty, five.
Speaker 4 (41:47):
THOUGH i was gonna, SAY i don't think they'd fall
so far to be out of the top twenty.
Speaker 2 (41:50):
Five, yeah but last, YEAR i, mean if you'd have
said to me at the beginning of the, season, yeah,
Well clemson's not going to win the national, championship, Right,
OKAY i get, It, yep it's hard to win a national. Championship,
Hey clemson's not going to win THE acc.
Speaker 3 (42:07):
Championship oh? Really, yeah, man that's. SURPRISING i don't.
Speaker 2 (42:11):
Know they've got a Squad and then you tell, me,
yeah and you know, What clemson's not going to be
ranked in the top twenty five at the end of the.
Speaker 3 (42:21):
Season i'd be, like you're, Crazy, like now we're too.
Good the roster is too.
Speaker 2 (42:26):
Good at that, POINT i would have said the same
thing About South. Carolina South carolina will still be ranked
in the top twenty. Five that's just HOW i would
have felt at the beginning of the. Season, SO i,
mean there's a lot of these teams THOUGH i look
like there's no way they're not going to be ranked
in the top twenty, five Right but the numbers tell
(42:46):
you twenty three seasons except one in twenty, nineteen there's
been at least one team that's at least. One there's
been multiple that haven't made. IT i don't, know all,
right we gotta deciphered a little bit. More we gotta
do some more. RESEARCH i gotta crunch a little or
a few more, NUMBERS i should say BEFORE i make
(43:09):
my full. Determination but let me know your. Thoughts is
there a team in the top ten right now in
this FIRST ap poll preseason top twenty five that you
think will not be in the final top twenty. Five
give us a. Call eight six four two four zero

Summer South carolina And clemson both had some significant injuries
that just. Happened South carolina now two receivers are missing
the entire twenty twenty six season senior transferred wide Receiver
(45:53):
Jaden gibson and, unfortunately sophomore wide Receiver Jaden, Sellers Yes
Lenora sellers. Brother both of them had lower body lower
body injuries this past week in, practice and, yeah not.
Speaker 3 (46:11):
Good.
Speaker 2 (46:12):
Now gibson spent the last four seasons At oklahoma and
was in twenty two, games one, start fifteen catches for
three hundred and eighty seven yards and five touchdown for The,
sooners and Then sellers appeared in seven games in two
starts in his first seasons with the Game. Cogs last,
year he had twenty two catches three hundred and thirty seven,
yards leading All South carolina, freshmen and had four catches
(46:35):
for a senior season high one hundred and twenty seven
yards in the win Against Coastal, carolina hauling in a
nice seventy five yard touchdown. Pass that's. Tough these, injuries
you just can't predict. Them and Then clemson lost defensive
back There Polo, anderson a freshman and he was set
to get some significant. Time so, injuries he can't predict.
(46:59):
It not good for either. Team all, right we'll continue
hour two of The Richmond Weaver show presented By Ingles
markets coming up next
