and you know, I'm a big proponent, get outside, walk around,

But yeah, don't don't go too crazy. Wear some sunscreen. Yes,

UVA index is now, my daughter she'll know just like
that's one of the main things she keeps up with.
Oh really, just uh, is this gonna be a good
day to try to get some sun It's like like
on her main screen or on the main screen of
her phone has the UV. Yeah, she has it programmed
where it'll it'll pop up interesting the UV index. I'm like,

all right, so how's the day going to be today?
He's like, oh, three terrible. I should probably pay more
attention to that.

I guess I feel like it would have been a
fit a lot more people to pay attention to that.

Yeah, it probably, But you know what, how long we've
been on Earth? Long time, a long time, and we
didn't have all this information and somehow we survived and
we keep doing it. Yeah. I mean I don't know.
You and I were talking off air, and now I
can't even remember exactly the context what we were talking about,

but basically we were talking that just in terms of
it is amazing how we've been able to stay on
the third this Earth for so long. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Well, we were talking about Arizona because I was talking
about it was I was like, I couldn't even imagine
living somewhere like Arizona, And then the thought of I mean,
isn't it insane that we as a species could just
live in a place like Arizona where it's hot. Yeah,
we just figured out, or more importantly like Alaska, oh
yeah it's cold where it's called Eskimos.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
I mean, what are we doing? I mean, you're choosing right.
I don't give and I do remember when I was
assistant coach at Maryland Eastern Shore and our staff had
just gotten fired. And so now I mean, I'm I'm
burning up fact lines, I'm burning up voicemails, whatever it
might be, burning up the road, trying to meet with

coaches that might have openings or whatever. And Arizona State
had an opening for a grad assistant position, and I
didn't really want to go back to school because now
I had been a full time assistant coach, which allowed
me to get out on the road, and I was young,
so it was a great experience. And at that time
in college basketball, you could have two full time assistants

that could be out on the road recruiting, and then
you could have a restricted earnings coach. And again it's
mind boggling now and you think about it that the
NCAA restricted how much money you could make, I mean,
and they called it restricted earnings coach or no, I mean,
it's insane. But you could also have grad assistance, but
(03:14):
you were limited to how many you could have. And
so there was part of me like, man, I really
don't want to go backwards, so to speak, because I
still wanted to be out on the road because that's
when you really, you know, got your really sinking into
being an assistant coach from that perspective being out on
the road. And then also it just allowed you to
(03:36):
do full time recruiting, full time evaluating and scouting even
in games and things of that nature. Anyway, long story short,
Arizona State had this opening and I remember talking to
the assistant coach about it, and I was just asking, Okay,
the weather. I know it's hot in Arizona and at
(03:57):
that point I'd never been to Arizona, and he actually
came from the northeast and now is there in Arizona,
so when it's an adjustment for him too, And he said, yeah,
I really don't have a good way to describe the
weather out here other than the fact that just imagine
there's an oven and it's five hundred degrees and you
open it and you just stand there in front of

the oven where it's five hundred degrees. That's basically what
timpier Arizona is during the summer. Awful. Awful. I was like, okay, yeah,
got it, duly noted. Now I ended up I was
pursuing it, but they went with somebody else, and so
there could have been a time that I was going
to be standing in front of that oven, and I
(04:38):
would have done it. But to your point, somehow we
figured out. Yeah, somehow we do it. And that's why.
I mean we complain about when we don't have air conditioning,
but humans have been on this earth way longer than
we even dreamed about how long we've been on Earth
that we've had air conditioning.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
Yeah, I mean you were in Europe. They don't even have Like,
there's a lot of places that just don't have it.
That's just what they do.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
Yeah. Well, my son lives in Newport, Rhode Island. He
doesn't have air conditioning. Now, he put in a little
unit to have a little bit of AC. But I
mean it's not like central air. Yeah, it's I guess
they probably don't need it as much as in Arizona
or down here, oh the even down here. Yeah, I
mean it's the weather's different, but they've been experiencing ninety

five degree weather. You know. He was down here this
past weekend and he was telling me that, yeah, it's
it's been hot man up there, but it'll quickly turn cold. Yeah,
that's part of it. Okay, we want you to join

But sometimes when I sent a minute out in the heat,
that it'll be high when I first get in and
then go down the road a little bit, he'll go.

Yeah, it ain't coming it ain't coming down enough to

it cools off to ninety seven, that's sorry, that's not
going to make a difference.

But ma'am, let me tell you what. Let me tell

See what happened last week? Man? I was cruising in
the snack van through Weaverville, and I and I stopped
at this little story. I'd this big old neon leaf
or something on the front of It's called weaver Weeds. Man.
I went in there and hung out a minute, bought
me a brownie. I eat it. It's tasted carying of funny,
but I eat it anyway. And then next thing you know,

I'm on the I'm on the radio calling you, telling
you how the panther's gonna win by two toys. I
don't know where I got that from. What was he
What don't want to say is that we were gonna
lose by two cuties and we were going to evaluate
all our players and kick out which ones we was
gonna cut and the preseason game don't matter anyway, That's

what I was going to say.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
Yes, hey, well man, I don't know those brownies. Got
to be careful with them, right, Yes, they'll make you
say some crazy things, so I get it. Yeah. So
and again at the end of the day, though it
wasn't necessarily you didn't believe with your Carolina Panthers. They
just didn't follow through what they were supposed to because
you laid it out. I mean it was it should

have been easy for him. They just didn't follow through
for it.

Yeah, I didn't stick to the game.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
Well. Again, at the end of the day, what are
you taking from preseason? I mean, Kenny Pickett sixteen of
nineteen ninety two yards a touchdown, Okay, you know, but
did he get beat twenty nine to fourteen? But I
don't know how much you take from it though, uh.
Speaker 3 (08:59):
Man, you took season with a grain of salty. We
all know that. I got heard one of the other
announcers saying, man, it ain't nothing but a bunch of
electricians and plumbers and realtors and car car salesman's out
there playing right now.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
Anyway, there's future, Oh I know what you're saying. Yeah,
of course, and it's a limited time that these players
are going to be out there starters. And also, I mean,
how much are the coaches actually showing in terms of the.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
I mean, offenses are definitely dumb down. You know, they're
not showing you like you said, they're not showing all
the guards. I mean, you don't want the other things
to practice for it, you know, for what you got.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
Of course, now again, at the end of the day,
most of these teams, they know what most of these
other teams are going to be running from an overall
schematical system. But that doesn't mean you could have a
few wrinkles, maybe do things a little bit different. And
you know, in all reality, you hope you're coaching staff
in the off season is developing some different things that
(10:06):
they can utilize come the regular season, especially if you're
coming off a season where it didn't end the way
you wanted it to. You're hoping that they're also investing
the time to get better during the off season, not
just from a physical standpoint like the players would have
to do.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
Yeah, yeah, I agree with you. I agree with you. Man.
I'm excited about the season, though. I think we're gonna
have a little something. I mean, you know, I mean,
I know I say fifteen and two, but I mean
that realistically, I could see nine or ten wins a
stiff the playoffs. I mean, in all honesty, you know,
I don't know we got enough to win Super Bowl,

but I think we could make the playoffs. And then again,
we might surprise everybody who knows. But either way, man,
this is about to start, and I'm all excided ready
for it.
Speaker 1 (10:52):
Oh of course, I think that's the sentiments from everybody
right now, as that we're basically two weeks away from
college football, at least officially starting now. Again, the big
games won't be right there until that weekend before Labor Day,
but you know, right when that hits, Chad, I mean,
it is on. I mean, we're going to just see

some fantastic football, however it might be playing out. And
this time period right now, we're in everybody's optimistic. I mean,
it's still somewhat of the honeymoon phase right now, and
it'll be that way for the first few weeks. Yeah,
and then you start, you know, maybe seeing some of
the issues that your team might you know, be coming
(11:34):
to the surface, so to speak. But that also doesn't
mean that even if you start off slow, you can't
make a run at the end. And I think that's
what the Panthers did last year. I mean, Panthers were
a team that I don't know too many teams in
NFL wanted to play just how they were in sync. Yeah,
how they were playing down the stretch part of the

season there, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
I look good. So they took stamp to the to
the clothes, they played cheese, real clothes. And the Eagles,
Oh it's in rams too. I think at the end
of the year, I mean, we give the main, main,
main teams around for their money.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
Yes, that's my point. Is that again when you look
at the building blocks for the Carolina Panthers, I mean,
and again this this can go with you know a
lot of different teams also, But I think Dave Canalys
is starting You're starting to see a little bit more
in terms of you know, how things are you know,

being played out and uh, hopefully it will continue in
that positive direction there and be can you take that
next step? The question though, is that we've been saying
it for for the past two years now. I think,
is is it Bryce Young? Is he going to be
the catalyst to help them take it to the next step?
Speaker 3 (12:59):
Man, I'm still on the fence with Young man. He's
just so small. I mean I've seen him out there
a Saturday, man. I mean he was standing next to
alignment or something. Man, that a lineman. His head didn't
even come come past the line his head shoulder pads,
you know. Man, this dude is just so small. I
(13:21):
mean he don't get me wrong. He can ball, he
can throw it, he's got a harm on him, he's accurate,
he's got leadership skills. I mean, he's got qualities. Man,
it's just that size. Just man, I'm waiting on that
one good to hit that's gonna knock him out become
and we've stuck with Kenny Pickett or this keen kid.

I mean, I don't know, man, he's just so small.
That's my always set bat with Young and I don't
I don't know if they should give him. I mean
this is his contract year too. I mean, he gonna
get the big money this time, or he gonna get
traded or something's got to happen in his year.

I feel like for a contract here, though, you want
to see more from Bryce Young in the beginning, because
this is this would be what the fourth season they
strolled off if if if they start off slow again.
I mean you're talking about his rookie season they started off,
I mean they were that was that was a rough season.
And the following season you'd hope you take a little bit
of a step forward, and he started off real slow
and then he got benched and then this this last

season started off slow again.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
I mean at some point you got to come out
rolling hot. Yeah. They're one in three to start the
season this past year, so right, yeah, you do you
need to be able to come out And we've talked
about it too. The NFC sound it's a winnable division, Chad,
and that is I mean it is up for grass,

So we don't know what. We don't know how Baker's
gonna play either. We don't know he's just gonna show
up or he gonna show out for some money somewhere. Uh,
this kid down in the Saints was Tyler shuk I
believe good at the end of the year. But you know,
we still don't know in Atlanta, what are they doing.

I mean panics. I think he's still hurt maybe or
I don't know. I mean the division's up for grabs.
I mean we might win in again. Went to losing season.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
Yeah, that's how it was last year at eight nine.
Speaker 3 (15:20):
Yeah, you know we've done that. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
And in all reality, Uh, the Panthers lost three out
of last four. Now they were close losses. Now twenty
to seventeen against the Saints, you beat Tampa twenty three
to twenty. You lose to Seattle, uh there, twenty seven
to ten against Seattle Super Bowl champions. Then you lose
down in Tampa sixteen to fourteen. And then as you

talked about there in the wild card game, you lose
to the Rams at home thirty four to thirty one.
So you played competitive in several of those games outside
of the Seattle game. But I mean this is a
team that if they can get some true production from
Bryce Young and to your point, Trey, then come out
(16:10):
with a faster start. Again. That's what we even talked about.
I don't know. I mean, you're you're hoping, if you're
the organization, that you get an evaluation from Bryce Young.
I mean maybe these guys already know what they're gonna
do with Bryce Young, But I mean you want to
know is he the guy or not pretty quickly, especially

this year because you got a quarterback draft coming up
out that's right, and you got the fifth year option.
What are you gonna do? I mean, that's that's a
that's a big this is a huge This is a
big year now that I'm thinking more about it, Chad,
this is a big year for the Panthers. It really is.

It is it is basket with Young or you're gonna
look somewhere else and maybe try to get something for him.
I mean, I don't know. My hand it up there.
There's a lot of little mooji with a little shrugging emotion.

Sir, that's all right. Listen nights or go growing along
where it's only a matter of time. I was watching
the Channel four just on. He was saying that that
we are going to cool back down to normal, and
probably after that it'll cool off even more. So I
think we've made it through the apex of summer. You know,
obviously what June twentieth or twenty first is when the
summer saltice faltice is right. It's a lot longer nights

now than it was at that point, so you know,
it's only a matter of time that Mother nature is
always gonna win out no matter what. What was that
I heard Rich Tray say, I can't remember which one
of you guys it was last week, but mother Nature's undefeated.
Speaker 1 (22:28):
Yes, yes, it doesn't matter. I mean, it's crazy, just
that you just got to be patient. It will work out.
And then sometimes you start thinking that you can outmaneuver
mother nature. Good luck, good luck. That's right, yeah, undefeatedly exactly.

And you know in this area we're lucky.

People don't realize we rarely hit actual one hundred degrees
here once ever decade or so, and so you know
with it, I'm not talking about the fields. Like temperature,
that's a totally different story. Is it's just rare that
we do get to triple digits here, so we're lucky.
I can remember growing up Richmond, there was this guy
that moved into the neighborhood and he was from Arizona
and I was complaining. It was ninety eight, ninety five,
(23:08):
ninety eight, I can't remember, you know, normal summer days,
and he's like hot. You guys don't know what hot is,
what hot is, but you know, I'm from Phoenix, and
I'm like what he's like, Yeah, you know, he starts
getting to one hundred degrees in late March there and
I'm like, no way. And then you know, that was
around the time that the Weather Channel was started. And
I remember they had a heat wave out there one
(23:29):
year and I turned it on and I was watching
it for a few minutes and they were talking about that.
At three o'clock in the morning at Phoenix time, it
was one hundred and fifteen degrees. Richmond had fun.
Speaker 1 (23:40):
Yes, that is what.
Speaker 4 (23:42):
It feels like. That was actual air temperature. I just
can't imagine that those are environments where we couldn't live
in and we didn't have man made environments.
Speaker 1 (23:50):
Absolutely mind boggling how people chose to do that. I
mean cause again, before air conditioning, people still lived in Arizona.
They did, Yeah, and they chose to it's hard to believe.
Speaker 4 (24:03):
Well, you know, I can't remember in the seventies. I
know you're not from this area originally Richmond, you're not
too far from here, but in three hours is a
good portion, is a good way away when you start
talking about, you know, the temperatures or whatever. But here
in the seventies and even the early eighties, not everybody
had central air. So even in this area, we didn't
have air conditioning. It didn't become routine until the late
(24:24):
eighties used them normally.
Speaker 1 (24:25):
So anyway, I hate will Billy. I can raise my
hand that growing up just right outside of Atlanta, that
we did not have central AC. We didn't even have
window units, no window units. We went straight to central air.
I was probably thirteen or fourteen years old when we

got central air. We just had the big attic fan
in the house. You turn that atic fan on, keep
all your windows open, and that's how you tried to
cool off. Wow. So yeah, I've been there.
Speaker 4 (24:59):
Yeah, well, you know, and I think we probably are
not less acclimated to it now because of the way
that we can control the climate in each individual home
or business that we were at. So probably we're less
acclimated to it now than we would have been. So
that's that's probably truth in that. But anyway, I was
listening to you and Chad, and you know i'd involved
(25:20):
on three season games. I think I mentioned this to
you last week, Rich, but I used to think that
you could read a lot into these three season games.
I don't think that is as true as much anymore.
It's some of that it's just because I've gotten wiser
as I've gotten older, And some of that is because
the last couple of years, three season has really changed.
Speaker 1 (25:37):
No doubt.
Speaker 4 (25:38):
Yes, yeah, and it's not just because you know, there's
only most teams only play three games. You know, back
in the day, you know they were playing four, and
then obviously the Hall of Fame game was the fifth
game for those two teams. But you know, back then
you could look at the first half of the second
game and the first half and third quarter of the

third game, and you could read into what was going
to happen. Now, you can't do that because they're playing
these starters a lot less than they did even in
their game two.
Speaker 1 (26:08):
Now, Yes, that's right, big time, and that's a factor
into it. And I think coaches are starting to understand
the longevity that is needed for these seasons and how
injuries it seems they pile up so much for some
of these teams, and they've got to try to do
whatever they can to keep players fresh, especially now that
(26:29):
you've got seventeen regular season games, and if it goes
to eighteen, Billy, I mean, my goodness, that's why I
think you've got to drop at least one preseason game
if you go to eighteen regular season games. And I'd
be okay dropping it down to one preseason game, to
be honest with you, or not even have a preseason game.
Speaker 4 (26:47):
Yeah, it doesn't matter to me. I listen, I've watched now.
I will say I didn't watch hardly any of the
Hall of Fame game or any of the other games.
I won't why, you know, I can't help myself. That
star pulls me in rich. I did find myself watching
a good portion of that game for some reason. I
don't know why. And I will say this, I think
there are some there are small clues of things you
(27:09):
can read into these police preseason games, and I did
come away with one thing out of that game that
I think is going to be true with Dallas this year.
I'm not predicting they're gonna win, you know, go seventeen
to oh or anything. I do think their offensive line
is going to be one of the better offensive lines
in football this year. There's some franchises and this is
true in college too. As you know, Rich, there's some
(27:29):
programs and franchises they're known for, you know, wide receivers,
offensive line defense, whatever, you know, certain positions. Dallas in
our lifetime rich is more times than not, I'm not
going to say all the time, but more times than
not has drafted well and has had really really good
offensive lines. If you watch any of that preseason game,
(27:50):
and I get it was not ones versus ones, so
we were taking it with a grain of salt, but
it didn't matter if it was their second stringer or
the third stringer, even some of the guys that's probably
going to be you know, working an insurance in a month.
They were getting a big push off the on the
on the defensive side of the ball with their offensive
line in Dallas that night.
Speaker 1 (28:10):
Yeah, well, and that's a great sign, even however you
want to describe it. It's just preseason, but those are
the type of things that I think you are looking for. Uh,
it's the nuances that you can pick up on and
hopefully that will carry over for the regular season, that
we will have an offensive line. And yes, of course
(28:31):
I say we because I'm Dallas Cowboys fan. Also that
because we're going to have to have the Cowboys, I
should say, are going to have to have the same
type of if they want to be successful this season, Billy,
we know it. You're going to have to maintain that
level of offensive production that you had last year. You're
(28:52):
just going to have to because you can't rely just
on the simple fact that, hey, you think your defense
is going to get better and and you know so,
maybe the offense doesn't have to do as much. No,
I think you keep the same mentality that you had
from this offense last year that we got to try
a score, score score. And I know that's so I'm
(29:14):
stating the obvious, Billy, but it seems like sometimes with
the Cowboys we don't do the obvious.
Speaker 4 (29:20):
Yeah. Well, like I said, I'm convinced they're gonna have
a offensive line. I'm not gonna see the best in
the NFL, but I think it'll be top five and
it could be the best. I believe that in my
heart and soul.
Speaker 3 (29:29):
We'll see.
Speaker 4 (29:29):
There was two or three years ago during tree season
their defensive line. You know, they went out and they
had they spent a lot of capital in the draft
on their defensive line, and it showed out Game one
and that ended up being true for the entire year
that year. Rich that offensive line. You go back and
watch the tape of that. It didn't matter if it
was from quarter one all the way through the quarter four.
(29:50):
They were getting a big push on Seattle's defensive side
of the ball. So I'm convinced. And they just always
drafted well at offensive line for the most part in
my life. So I think they're gonna be well define there.
That's all I'm gonna read into that. As far as
the NFC South, with you and Chad what you were
talking about earlier, I just I don't think there's gonna
(30:11):
be more than three games difference between first and last
in that division. I just think they're all the same. Yeah,
I'm not gonna get ventured to guess who's gonna win
the division. I have my faults, but it's really just
throwing darts at a board that you can't really see
honestly reach because they're all that glows.
Speaker 1 (30:26):
I would agree, And I think that just showcases even
more so just the parody of the NFL, but it
also then emphasizes that it's such a winnable division where
some of the other divisions, I think there's going to
be one or two teams that should be head and
shoulders above everybody. Of course, anything can happen, but the
(30:46):
NFC South is definitely one of those where I think
it's going to be tightly bunched, and Billy, I'm even wondering.
In the NFC East, I think it could be tightly
bunched here too.
Speaker 4 (30:57):
No, I agree. I don't think there's gonna be more
than three or four games and separates first to fourth.
And I think in this division. This is not a
knock on the NFC South because I do think they
are making progress for the most part. I think Tampa
Bay is taking a step back and everybody else is
moving forward. In the NFC East, I think Philadelphia is
taking a step back and everybody else is moving forward.
So I don't think there's going to be a big
(31:18):
disparity there. And I agree with you on for the
most part, the disparity in the NFL has never been
that big, you know, the the gap or the divide
between first and last. It's completely different than college football.
All of that GAP's probably changed some too in the
last few years, as we've talked about the portal and
you know, the nil. But I do think that there
(31:39):
are some divisions, like we talked about, you know, last week,
when we were picking divisional games or whatever, who was
going to win the divisions, you know, like AFC East,
for instance, I would be shocked if anybody other than
Buffalo or New England won that division. I'm sure you
and probably Tree would both agree with that.
Speaker 1 (31:56):
Yeah, it's going to be hard not to say that
the Buffalo bill are going to win the AFC East
and then Kansas City. I mean, yeah, it depends on
Patrick Mahomes, but yeah, I mean they should be the favorite.
Speaker 4 (32:10):
Yeah, NFC West, same thing, Rams or Seattle.
Speaker 1 (32:13):
Nobody else exactly, you know, And you know.
Speaker 4 (32:16):
That's funny that day that we picked those games. I
forgot the AFC West. I think it's going to be
a three team race. I've heard Bill will call, you know,
Jeremy a couple of times when I was talking about
Kansas City and that I'm just writing them completely off.
I'm not writing them completely off. I don't think they're
going to be Kansas City that everyone remembers when they
were just you know, throwing their helmet out there and
making the AFC Conference title game. So but I do

think they'll be probably in playoff discussion, you know, wild card.
But I wouldn't be shocked at either Kansas City Denver
for the Chargers won that division. I would be shocked
the Raiders did this year. I do think they're coming along,
but they're still a divide.

Yeah, there is a divide, I would agree. Now, there's
gonna be one team that's gonna surprise somebody. I just
don't know which one that is as of yet. Some yes, yeah,
who can be the Indiana Hoosiers of the NFL this year?
Can it be the Cowboys?

It's the Cowboys. We're just gonna ride with that until

You're attack in the middle of the field, You're doing
a lot of stuff that I think Aaron Rodgers can

more distractions we have, there's already enough distractions during that week.

like we could move. Interesting. I thought that was very

about this? Also in baseball, did you see Joshua Bias
for the Cardinals. Okay, he made his major league debut. Okay,

You and I were talking off air, and now I

but basically we were talking that just in terms of
it is amazing how we've been able to stay on
the third this Earth for so long. Yeah.

Well, we were talking about Arizona because I was talking
about it was I was like, I couldn't even imagine
living somewhere like Arizona, And then the thought of I mean,
isn't it insane that we as a species could just
live in a place like Arizona where it's hot. Yeah,
we just figured out, or more importantly like Alaska, oh
yeah it's cold where it's called Eskimos.

I mean, what are we doing? I mean, you're choosing right.
I don't give and I do remember when I was
assistant coach at Maryland Eastern Shore and our staff had
just gotten fired. And so now I mean, I'm I'm
burning up fact lines, I'm burning up voicemails, whatever it
might be, burning up the road, trying to meet with

coaches that might have openings or whatever. And Arizona State
had an opening for a grad assistant position, and I
didn't really want to go back to school because now
I had been a full time assistant coach, which allowed
me to get out on the road, and I was young,
so it was a great experience. And at that time
in college basketball, you could have two full time assistants
(02:53):
that could be out on the road recruiting, and then
you could have a restricted earnings coach. And again it's
mind boggling now and you think about it that the
NCAA restricted how much money you could make, I mean,
and they called it restricted earnings coach or no, I mean,
it's insane. But you could also have grad assistance, but
(03:14):
you were limited to how many you could have. And
so there was part of me like, man, I really
don't want to go backwards, so to speak, because I
still wanted to be out on the road because that's
when you really, you know, got your really sinking into
being an assistant coach from that perspective being out on
the road. And then also it just allowed you to
(03:36):
do full time recruiting, full time evaluating and scouting even
in games and things of that nature. Anyway, long story short,
Arizona State had this opening and I remember talking to
the assistant coach about it, and I was just asking, Okay,
the weather. I know it's hot in Arizona and at
(03:57):
that point I'd never been to Arizona, and he actually
came from the northeast and now is there in Arizona,
so when it's an adjustment for him too, And he said, yeah,
I really don't have a good way to describe the
weather out here other than the fact that just imagine
there's an oven and it's five hundred degrees and you
open it and you just stand there in front of
(04:17):
the oven where it's five hundred degrees. That's basically what
timpier Arizona is during the summer. Awful. Awful. I was like, okay, yeah,
got it, duly noted. Now I ended up I was
pursuing it, but they went with somebody else, and so
there could have been a time that I was going
to be standing in front of that oven, and I
(04:38):
would have done it. But to your point, somehow we
figured out. Yeah, somehow we do it. And that's why.
I mean we complain about when we don't have air conditioning,
but humans have been on this earth way longer than
we even dreamed about how long we've been on Earth
that we've had air conditioning.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
Yeah, I mean you were in Europe. They don't even have Like,
there's a lot of places that just don't have it.
That's just what they do.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
Yeah. Well, my son lives in Newport, Rhode Island. He
doesn't have air conditioning. Now, he put in a little
unit to have a little bit of AC. But I
mean it's not like central air. Yeah, it's I guess
they probably don't need it as much as in Arizona
or down here, oh the even down here. Yeah, I
mean it's the weather's different, but they've been experiencing ninety

past weekend and he was telling me that, yeah, it's

Man, you took season with a grain of salty. We
all know that. I got heard one of the other
announcers saying, man, it ain't nothing but a bunch of
electricians and plumbers and realtors and car car salesman's out
there playing right now.

Anyway, there's future, Oh I know what you're saying. Yeah,
of course, and it's a limited time that these players
are going to be out there starters. And also, I mean,
how much are the coaches actually showing in terms of the.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
I mean, offenses are definitely dumb down. You know, they're
not showing you like you said, they're not showing all
the guards. I mean, you don't want the other things
to practice for it, you know, for what you got.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
Of course, now again, at the end of the day,
most of these teams, they know what most of these
other teams are going to be running from an overall
schematical system. But that doesn't mean you could have a
few wrinkles, maybe do things a little bit different. And
you know, in all reality, you hope you're coaching staff
in the off season is developing some different things that
(10:06):
they can utilize come the regular season, especially if you're
coming off a season where it didn't end the way
you wanted it to. You're hoping that they're also investing
the time to get better during the off season, not
just from a physical standpoint like the players would have
to do.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
Yeah, yeah, I agree with you. I agree with you. Man.
I'm excited about the season, though. I think we're gonna
have a little something. I mean, you know, I mean,
I know I say fifteen and two, but I mean
that realistically, I could see nine or ten wins a
stiff the playoffs. I mean, in all honesty, you know,
I don't know we got enough to win Super Bowl,

but I think we could make the playoffs. And then again,
we might surprise everybody who knows. But either way, man,
this is about to start, and I'm all excided ready
for it.

Oh of course, I think that's the sentiments from everybody
right now, as that we're basically two weeks away from
college football, at least officially starting now. Again, the big
games won't be right there until that weekend before Labor Day,
but you know, right when that hits, Chad, I mean,
it is on. I mean, we're going to just see

some fantastic football, however it might be playing out. And
this time period right now, we're in everybody's optimistic. I mean,
it's still somewhat of the honeymoon phase right now, and
it'll be that way for the first few weeks. Yeah,
and then you start, you know, maybe seeing some of
the issues that your team might you know, be coming

to the surface, so to speak. But that also doesn't
mean that even if you start off slow, you can't
make a run at the end. And I think that's
what the Panthers did last year. I mean, Panthers were
a team that I don't know too many teams in
NFL wanted to play just how they were in sync. Yeah,
how they were playing down the stretch part of the
(11:55):
season there, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
I look good. So they took stamp to the to
the clothes, they played cheese, real clothes. And the Eagles,
Oh it's in rams too. I think at the end
of the year, I mean, we give the main, main,
main teams around for their money.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
Yes, that's my point. Is that again when you look
at the building blocks for the Carolina Panthers, I mean,
and again this this can go with you know a
lot of different teams also, But I think Dave Canalys
is starting You're starting to see a little bit more
in terms of you know, how things are you know,

being played out and uh, hopefully it will continue in
that positive direction there and be can you take that
next step? The question though, is that we've been saying
it for for the past two years now. I think,
is is it Bryce Young? Is he going to be
the catalyst to help them take it to the next step?
Speaker 3 (12:59):
Man, I'm still on the fence with Young man. He's
just so small. I mean I've seen him out there
a Saturday, man. I mean he was standing next to
alignment or something. Man, that a lineman. His head didn't
even come come past the line his head shoulder pads,
you know. Man, this dude is just so small. I

mean he don't get me wrong. He can ball, he
can throw it, he's got a harm on him, he's accurate,
he's got leadership skills. I mean, he's got qualities. Man,
it's just that size. Just man, I'm waiting on that
one good to hit that's gonna knock him out become
and we've stuck with Kenny Pickett or this keen kid.

I mean, I don't know, man, he's just so small.
That's my always set bat with Young and I don't
I don't know if they should give him. I mean
this is his contract year too. I mean, he gonna
get the big money this time, or he gonna get
traded or something's got to happen in his year.

I feel like for a contract here, though, you want
to see more from Bryce Young in the beginning, because
this is this would be what the fourth season they
strolled off if if if they start off slow again.
I mean you're talking about his rookie season they started off,
I mean they were that was that was a rough season.
And the following season you'd hope you take a little bit
of a step forward, and he started off real slow
and then he got benched and then this this last

season started off slow again.

I mean at some point you got to come out
rolling hot. Yeah. They're one in three to start the
season this past year, so right, yeah, you do you
need to be able to come out And we've talked
about it too. The NFC sound it's a winnable division, Chad,
and that is I mean it is up for grass,

So we don't know what. We don't know how Baker's
gonna play either. We don't know he's just gonna show
up or he gonna show out for some money somewhere. Uh,
this kid down in the Saints was Tyler shuk I
believe good at the end of the year. But you know,
we still don't know in Atlanta, what are they doing.

I mean panics. I think he's still hurt maybe or
I don't know. I mean the division's up for grabs.
I mean we might win in again. Went to losing season.

Yeah, that's how it was last year at eight nine.

Yeah, you know we've done that. Yeah.

And in all reality, Uh, the Panthers lost three out
of last four. Now they were close losses. Now twenty
to seventeen against the Saints, you beat Tampa twenty three
to twenty. You lose to Seattle, uh there, twenty seven
to ten against Seattle Super Bowl champions. Then you lose
down in Tampa sixteen to fourteen. And then as you

talked about there in the wild card game, you lose
to the Rams at home thirty four to thirty one.
So you played competitive in several of those games outside
of the Seattle game. But I mean this is a
team that if they can get some true production from
Bryce Young and to your point, Trey, then come out

with a faster start. Again. That's what we even talked about.
I don't know. I mean, you're you're hoping, if you're
the organization, that you get an evaluation from Bryce Young.
I mean maybe these guys already know what they're gonna
do with Bryce Young, But I mean you want to
know is he the guy or not pretty quickly, especially

this year because you got a quarterback draft coming up
out that's right, and you got the fifth year option.
What are you gonna do? I mean, that's that's a
that's a big this is a huge This is a
big year now that I'm thinking more about it, Chad,
this is a big year for the Panthers. It really is.

look somewhere else and maybe try to get something for him.

think we've made it through the apex of summer. You know,
obviously what June twentieth or twenty first is when the

now than it was at that point, so you know,
it's only a matter of time that Mother nature is
always gonna win out no matter what. What was that
I heard Rich Tray say, I can't remember which one
of you guys it was last week, but mother Nature's undefeated.

Yes, yes, it doesn't matter. I mean, it's crazy, just
that you just got to be patient. It will work out.
And then sometimes you start thinking that you can outmaneuver
mother nature. Good luck, good luck. That's right, yeah, undefeatedly exactly.

And you know in this area we're lucky.

People don't realize we rarely hit actual one hundred degrees
here once ever decade or so, and so you know
with it, I'm not talking about the fields. Like temperature,
that's a totally different story. Is it's just rare that
we do get to triple digits here, so we're lucky.
I can remember growing up Richmond, there was this guy
that moved into the neighborhood and he was from Arizona
and I was complaining. It was ninety eight, ninety five,
(23:08):
ninety eight, I can't remember, you know, normal summer days,
and he's like hot. You guys don't know what hot is,
what hot is, but you know, I'm from Phoenix, and
I'm like what he's like, Yeah, you know, he starts
getting to one hundred degrees in late March there and
I'm like, no way. And then you know, that was
around the time that the Weather Channel was started. And
I remember they had a heat wave out there one
(23:29):
year and I turned it on and I was watching
it for a few minutes and they were talking about that.
At three o'clock in the morning at Phoenix time, it
was one hundred and fifteen degrees. Richmond had fun.
Speaker 1 (23:40):
Yes, that is what.
Speaker 4 (23:42):
It feels like. That was actual air temperature. I just
can't imagine that those are environments where we couldn't live
in and we didn't have man made environments.
Speaker 1 (23:50):
Absolutely mind boggling how people chose to do that. I
mean cause again, before air conditioning, people still lived in Arizona.
They did, Yeah, and they chose to it's hard to believe.
Speaker 4 (24:03):
Well, you know, I can't remember in the seventies. I
know you're not from this area originally Richmond, you're not
too far from here, but in three hours is a
good portion, is a good way away when you start
talking about, you know, the temperatures or whatever. But here
in the seventies and even the early eighties, not everybody
had central air. So even in this area, we didn't
have air conditioning. It didn't become routine until the late
(24:24):
eighties used them normally.
Speaker 1 (24:25):
So anyway, I hate will Billy. I can raise my
hand that growing up just right outside of Atlanta, that
we did not have central AC. We didn't even have
window units, no window units. We went straight to central air.
I was probably thirteen or fourteen years old when we
(24:48):
got central air. We just had the big attic fan
in the house. You turn that atic fan on, keep
all your windows open, and that's how you tried to
cool off. Wow. So yeah, I've been there.
Speaker 4 (24:59):
Yeah, well, you know, and I think we probably are
not less acclimated to it now because of the way
that we can control the climate in each individual home
or business that we were at. So probably we're less
acclimated to it now than we would have been. So
that's that's probably truth in that. But anyway, I was
listening to you and Chad, and you know i'd involved
(25:20):
on three season games. I think I mentioned this to
you last week, Rich, but I used to think that
you could read a lot into these three season games.
I don't think that is as true as much anymore.
It's some of that it's just because I've gotten wiser
as I've gotten older, And some of that is because
the last couple of years, three season has really changed.
Speaker 1 (25:37):
No doubt.
Speaker 4 (25:38):
Yes, yeah, and it's not just because you know, there's
only most teams only play three games. You know, back
in the day, you know they were playing four, and
then obviously the Hall of Fame game was the fifth
game for those two teams. But you know, back then
you could look at the first half of the second
game and the first half and third quarter of the
(26:00):
third game, and you could read into what was going
to happen. Now, you can't do that because they're playing
these starters a lot less than they did even in
their game two.
Speaker 1 (26:08):
Now, Yes, that's right, big time, and that's a factor
into it. And I think coaches are starting to understand
the longevity that is needed for these seasons and how
injuries it seems they pile up so much for some
of these teams, and they've got to try to do
whatever they can to keep players fresh, especially now that
(26:29):
you've got seventeen regular season games, and if it goes
to eighteen, Billy, I mean, my goodness, that's why I
think you've got to drop at least one preseason game
if you go to eighteen regular season games. And I'd
be okay dropping it down to one preseason game, to
be honest with you, or not even have a preseason game.
Speaker 4 (26:47):
Yeah, it doesn't matter to me. I listen, I've watched now.
I will say I didn't watch hardly any of the
Hall of Fame game or any of the other games.
I won't why, you know, I can't help myself. That
star pulls me in rich. I did find myself watching
a good portion of that game for some reason. I
don't know why. And I will say this, I think
there are some there are small clues of things you
(27:09):
can read into these police preseason games, and I did
come away with one thing out of that game that
I think is going to be true with Dallas this year.
I'm not predicting they're gonna win, you know, go seventeen
to oh or anything. I do think their offensive line
is going to be one of the better offensive lines
in football this year. There's some franchises and this is
true in college too. As you know, Rich, there's some
(27:29):
programs and franchises they're known for, you know, wide receivers,
offensive line defense, whatever, you know, certain positions. Dallas in
our lifetime rich is more times than not, I'm not
going to say all the time, but more times than
not has drafted well and has had really really good
offensive lines. If you watch any of that preseason game,
(27:50):
and I get it was not ones versus ones, so
we were taking it with a grain of salt, but
it didn't matter if it was their second stringer or
the third stringer, even some of the guys that's probably
going to be you know, working an insurance in a month.
They were getting a big push off the on the
on the defensive side of the ball with their offensive
line in Dallas that night.
Speaker 1 (28:10):
Yeah, well, and that's a great sign, even however you
want to describe it. It's just preseason, but those are
the type of things that I think you are looking for. Uh,
it's the nuances that you can pick up on and
hopefully that will carry over for the regular season, that
we will have an offensive line. And yes, of course
(28:31):
I say we because I'm Dallas Cowboys fan. Also that
because we're going to have to have the Cowboys, I
should say, are going to have to have the same
type of if they want to be successful this season, Billy,
we know it. You're going to have to maintain that
level of offensive production that you had last year. You're
(28:52):
just going to have to because you can't rely just
on the simple fact that, hey, you think your defense
is going to get better and and you know so,
maybe the offense doesn't have to do as much. No,
I think you keep the same mentality that you had
from this offense last year that we got to try
a score, score score. And I know that's so I'm
(29:14):
stating the obvious, Billy, but it seems like sometimes with
the Cowboys we don't do the obvious.
Speaker 4 (29:20):
Yeah. Well, like I said, I'm convinced they're gonna have
a offensive line. I'm not gonna see the best in
the NFL, but I think it'll be top five and
it could be the best. I believe that in my
heart and soul.
Speaker 3 (29:29):
We'll see.
Speaker 4 (29:29):
There was two or three years ago during tree season
their defensive line. You know, they went out and they
had they spent a lot of capital in the draft
on their defensive line, and it showed out Game one
and that ended up being true for the entire year
that year. Rich that offensive line. You go back and
watch the tape of that. It didn't matter if it
was from quarter one all the way through the quarter four.
(29:50):
They were getting a big push on Seattle's defensive side
of the ball. So I'm convinced. And they just always
drafted well at offensive line for the most part in
my life. So I think they're gonna be well define there.
That's all I'm gonna read into that. As far as
the NFC South, with you and Chad what you were
talking about earlier, I just I don't think there's gonna
(30:11):
be more than three games difference between first and last
in that division. I just think they're all the same. Yeah,
I'm not gonna get ventured to guess who's gonna win
the division. I have my faults, but it's really just
throwing darts at a board that you can't really see
honestly reach because they're all that glows.
Speaker 1 (30:26):
I would agree, And I think that just showcases even
more so just the parody of the NFL, but it
also then emphasizes that it's such a winnable division where
some of the other divisions, I think there's going to
be one or two teams that should be head and
shoulders above everybody. Of course, anything can happen, but the
(30:46):
NFC South is definitely one of those where I think
it's going to be tightly bunched, and Billy, I'm even wondering.
In the NFC East, I think it could be tightly
bunched here too.
Speaker 4 (30:57):
No, I agree. I don't think there's gonna be more
than three or four games and separates first to fourth.
And I think in this division. This is not a
knock on the NFC South because I do think they
are making progress for the most part. I think Tampa
Bay is taking a step back and everybody else is
moving forward. In the NFC East, I think Philadelphia is
taking a step back and everybody else is moving forward.
So I don't think there's going to be a big
(31:18):
disparity there. And I agree with you on for the
most part, the disparity in the NFL has never been
that big, you know, the the gap or the divide
between first and last. It's completely different than college football.
All of that GAP's probably changed some too in the
last few years, as we've talked about the portal and
you know, the nil. But I do think that there
(31:39):
are some divisions, like we talked about, you know, last week,
when we were picking divisional games or whatever, who was
going to win the divisions, you know, like AFC East,
for instance, I would be shocked if anybody other than
Buffalo or New England won that division. I'm sure you
and probably Tree would both agree with that.
Speaker 1 (31:56):
Yeah, it's going to be hard not to say that
the Buffalo bill are going to win the AFC East
and then Kansas City. I mean, yeah, it depends on
Patrick Mahomes, but yeah, I mean they should be the favorite.
Speaker 4 (32:10):
Yeah, NFC West, same thing, Rams or Seattle.
Speaker 1 (32:13):
Nobody else exactly, you know, And you know.
Speaker 4 (32:16):
That's funny that day that we picked those games. I
forgot the AFC West. I think it's going to be
a three team race. I've heard Bill will call, you know,
Jeremy a couple of times when I was talking about
Kansas City and that I'm just writing them completely off.
I'm not writing them completely off. I don't think they're
going to be Kansas City that everyone remembers when they
were just you know, throwing their helmet out there and
making the AFC Conference title game. So but I do
(32:39):
think they'll be probably in playoff discussion, you know, wild card.
But I wouldn't be shocked at either Kansas City Denver
for the Chargers won that division. I would be shocked
the Raiders did this year. I do think they're coming along,
but they're still a divide.
Speaker 1 (32:54):
Yeah, there is a divide, I would agree. Now, there's
gonna be one team that's gonna surprise somebody. I just
don't know which one that is as of yet. Some yes, yeah,
who can be the Indiana Hoosiers of the NFL this year?
Can it be the Cowboys?
Speaker 4 (33:14):
It's the Cowboys. We're just gonna ride with that until
proven otherwise. Rich anyway, I got a run. You guys,

I'd agree with that. I mean, he's definitely taking us.

You would hope to see in the NFL, that you
kind of adapt to what you've got. And so you
got Mike McCarthy looking at Aaron Rodgers like, Okay, he's
not throwing it like he used because he's he's forty three.
He's not the Aaron Rodgers at want the MVP. You
have to understand that that mother nature or not mother nature,
father time, Yeah, steps in and.

You just you've naturally declined.

So you work with it, So you work around the
string and now the vulnerabilities that he might have. And
so I put it to Mike McCarthy that, at least
from a scheme perspective of what I've seen in preseason, it.

Looks pretty good.

You're attack in the middle of the field, You're doing
a lot of stuff that I think Aaron Rodgers can
be pretty good at still even at forty three.

still there. It's still reading the defense. He's still got
the pre snap stuff, so that I can trust in that.

sixty four games after having the surgery, which was revolutionary
at the time. I think he's a Hall of Famer

John surgery. I mean, that has saved so many pitchers
career now, and so I think there's something to be

Ohio State has moved senior day to Week one to
avoid distractions during rivalry week against Michigan. We want to

keep much of the focus on the game, and the
more distractions we have, there's already enough distractions during that week.

like we could move. Interesting. I thought that was very
interesting to week one for senior days. Okay, doesn't that

about this? Also in baseball, did you see Joshua Bias
for the Cardinals. Okay, he made his major league debut. Okay,

for the Cardinals. Another home run, three times, three consecutive
home runs in his major league base debut. First time
that has happened in Major League baseball history. That the

evidence that the Clippers owner Steve Balmer, funneled money through
team sponsors to pay Kawhi Leonard and circumvent the salary cap.

So it's a full story on ESPN. Well, the NBA
put out a press release and according to NBA spokesman
Mike Bass says, quote ESPN's article regarding the LA Clippers
investigation for which the NBA declined to cooperate contains numerous
and significant inaccuracies. The results in this matter will be

made clear once the investigation is concluded. Hmm, Yeah, the
NBA came wow swinging at ESPN said well, whoa, whoa,
not so fast, my friend. Yeah, we decline to cooperate
in this article for a reason. Yeah, you guys decided

to keep going moving forward, and yeah we're not going
to have this. Okay, Okay, there we go. I kind
of like it. And one other thing here in the
NBA joker, just remember how good he is. I just
saw this in the entire NBA. This decade. He's the

only player in NBA history to lead a decade in
four major categories. He's got the most points scored in
this decade, the most rebounds in this decade, the most
assists in this decade, and the most steals in this decade.
