Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, guys, welcome in to another week of talking
Worth County football. And it is always a good time
to visit with the head coach of the Rams, Jeff Hammond,
who joins us now.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Coach, welcome in.

Speaker 3 (00:16):
Hey, thanks, Phil.

Speaker 4 (00:17):
Thanks for having me again, buddy.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Man, I always look forward to these conversations.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
By the way, I want to give a big shout
out to our sponsor, who is responsible for us having
these conversations. And that would be Phoebe Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.

(01:09):
you guys and K-Row being probably one of the most
anticipated games across the state, especially in South Georgia.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
And lo and behold, it never happened. What happened?

Speaker 4 (01:27):
We got going.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
We got going out the pregame and we got a
lightning bolt that ran off and it sat about 10
miles south of us and continued lightning until after 10
o'clock at night.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
So, I mean, we've talked about this. You know, I
wrote a story that featured you more on the heat,
but it's all connected. The weather continues to play havoc.
I have never ever seen anything like it. You've been
around high school football maybe longer than I have and
just never have seen weather, whether it's the heat or

(02:05):
the thunderstorms, play such havoc. But it's all attributed to
one thing, starting in early August.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
Well, I think it would be nicer if we could
go start a little bit later and.

Speaker 4 (02:19):
Knock some of this stuff out. Me too.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
It's been very difficult this year. just to get them
ready to go and be in shape and be safe. Yep.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Yeah, I mean, we talked about that last week. And listen,
and you're not the only one.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
This comes up with every coach I talk to. You know, whether, again,
it's the heat or weather related.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
You know, I'll share a quick story with you.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
I talked with the Applin County coach, J.D.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Sellers.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
You know, they went all the way to Savannah, played
eight plays, And game was over. There was nothing that
New Hampstead could do. You know, they couldn't make up
the game for whatever reason. But anyway, Abney County won.
But the point being, team traveled almost three and a
half hours not able to play.

Speaker 4 (03:11):
I mean, that was similar here.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
Like me and David talked before the game, we put
a limit on how late we wanted to start.

Speaker 4 (03:18):
So, yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
We weren't finishing the game at one o'clock in the
morning and his people having to drive back and all
the back roads and it being unsafe for them. So,
I mean, it's, we were just fortunate that we both
had an open week later in the year that we
could come back and have a normal Friday.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
And when would that be?

Speaker 4 (03:41):
September 25th.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
What does all this disruption do to the, You know, again,
you and I have had conversations about the practices. You
guys having to struggle just to get practice time in.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
You know, now you can't play the game.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
Most important thing, you know, these kids work hard up
to what's supposed to be, you know, paying dividends on
Friday night. All the hard work is supposed to pay.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
You don't get a chance. And I know there's nothing
anybody can do about it necessarily. Maybe there is. But
what does this do to, you know, as far as
the disruption of things running a football team?

Speaker 4 (04:24):
Well, it keeps you up at night for sure.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
I mean, you try to do the best you can
do by the kids and get them prepared and get
them where they're in a good place to go compete
in the game and be safe. And then you look
up and you haven't practiced a true practice once in
a week. And it's difficult. We got out yesterday on time,
got finished on time. But I can tell they haven't.

(04:51):
their bodies aren't where they need to be, where you
would think going into week three of the season would be.

Speaker 4 (04:57):
So there's going to be the growing pains again. I mean,
it's almost like we.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
Haven't played a game, and we've already basically had two
starting from scratch just by their energy level and their bodies. So,
I mean, we've got to do what we've got to do, and,
I mean, you got some schools with an advantage where
they haven't missed any time. Then you have a few
schools like us that don't have any other options. So

(05:24):
we just got to keep getting better and better. And
hopefully we're getting back into a routine the next several
weeks where it just becomes normal football again.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Is it possible, or do you try to make up
these loss reps from game time during practice?

Speaker 4 (05:44):
No, I mean, I don't think you can make them up.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
I mean, it's a culmination of days in a row
is the reps they need. Not going out there for
three hours and getting twice as many reps out of
practice as you normally get, that's not going to help either.

Speaker 4 (06:01):
They need days. They need continuous.

Speaker 3 (06:03):
Days of work where they're outside and running around and
being stressed, where their body gets accustomed to it. So
around game four and game five, it's just riding a
bike tour.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
Well, and here's the other thing, and it's like I
mentioned at the beginning of the show. It's not just
a lost game. I mean, this was a big game
for a lot of different reasons. You know, the gate,
getting experience. You know, I thought it was a real,
and I tell you, I thought it was a real
good measuring stick for both teams.

Speaker 3 (06:41):
Oh, I agree. I was excited to play them, and
it's one of those where, They presented us with a
bunch of challenges, and the gate was going to be
really good. We had parking was– there was no parking.

Speaker 4 (06:58):
To be found.

Speaker 3 (06:58):
I mean, they traveled really well. My group was here
ready to go. And to not get it in, I
hope we don't lose the mojo when we come back
to play next month. And who knows?

Speaker 4 (07:10):
It might be a better game. I mean, I think
I'm going.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
To be better in certain positions than I am, would
have been last Friday. Coach has a good chance of
getting one of his better players back on defense that's
been out with an injury. So it could be a
blessing that we get a better game.

Speaker 4 (07:26):
Than what we would have got Friday.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
Or it could be not as good. So who knows?

Speaker 2 (07:34):
Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
That is, I guess, remains to be determined. Well, Nothing
we can do about that now except look forward to
the next opponent and tell us who that is and
when that is.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
We go to Early County next Friday at 730, down
back to Blakely, Georgia. We haven't played them since I've
been here. I'm familiar with the place. I coached there
for five years. So it'll be the first time back.

Speaker 4 (08:01):
Since I left. So I'm excited.

Speaker 1 (08:07):
So what have you been able to take a look
at early, County? I know we had them as a
preseason top ten, and I know they lost a tough
one the other night. But still, I think they've got
a pretty good program. What have you been able to
garner from looking at them?

Speaker 3 (08:26):
Well, I think they're very athletic. They have some really
good skill players. And Coach Taylor's done a really good job.
It's always tough year one. And I think they've changed
scheme a little bit on what they do offensively and
going back to be more of a spread shotgun-oriented team.

Speaker 4 (08:46):
But they're the same early count as it's always been.

Speaker 3 (08:49):
They're going to have guys that can run, guys that
like to hit and go out there and make plays.
I really think, like the other night, it was a
close game, four quarters, a one-score game for most of
the fourth quarter. And it got away from them late.
And I think it has more to do with elements
than it did anything. I mean, they're playing a bunch

(09:12):
of kids both ways. And Barron was able to tune
a little bit more. And it caught up with them
in the fourth quarter.

Speaker 4 (09:19):
But they're a talented football team.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
Yeah, if anything, it's just going to make their resolve
any better.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
I've always thought, and I'll be curious to get your take,
And I'd rather play a 1-0 team than an 0-1
team coming off a game where they're licking their wounds.

Speaker 4 (09:45):
Oh, no doubt.

Speaker 3 (09:46):
I mean, it seems like every time we've ever lost
a game at any school up in the next week,
we were better. Uh, and, and sometimes it takes a lot,
it takes a loss to get your attention inside.

Speaker 4 (09:59):
Oh, okay. This is exactly where we are.

Speaker 3 (10:01):
And that's players and coaches that, all right, we got
to circle wagons. We got to go back to what
we do really well and, and give them a, give
them a chance to win. Um, so it's going to
be a definite challenge. I mean, it's a long bus
ride over there. It's not an easy way to get there. Um,
We're going to be playing in a place that we

(10:21):
don't know.

Speaker 4 (10:22):
None of these kids have ever been in that stadium.
So it's going to be a lot of.

Speaker 3 (10:28):
Unknowns early on, and it's going to see how do
we react in that situation.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
Well, and here's an interesting thing to note. So Early
County also had a game that they lost to the Weathers.
And that was their season opener. I believe it was
against Chris.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
Yes, and they rescheduled it for the last game of
the season. And to me, that's another thing is the
preparation part of teams not having games. So to be
able to prepare and kind of have a really good
idea of who they are, who their better players are,
what they want to try to do to you. With

(11:12):
the lack of information, it's kind of, it's a little
bit of a guessing game in practice of what are
we going to go against versus who they're going to be. So,
I mean, there's a lot of factors that are going
in these missing games, which we wish we never did that.

Speaker 4 (11:27):
But it's almost like playing a game one all over again.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
I have never seen so many games canceled this early
in the season.

Speaker 1 (11:37):
And you said it earlier, you got to wonder what
it does.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
To your mojo.

Speaker 1 (11:40):
You know, season opener like early counties, hosting Chris, I
think it was Chris. Yeah, they don't get a chance
to play, and then they come out the next week
against Barry, and then they look kind of flat, look
very flat. They just, you know, it's the residual effect.

Speaker 3 (12:00):
You don't get a chance to get better. I mean,
we'll practice them, we'll do everything, but when you miss
a game and you don't be there, you can't go
out there and evaluate the game footage because I mean,
most players play harder in the game than they do
in practice.

Speaker 4 (12:18):
That's human nature. But the improvements you make are from games.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
And when you don't get the games to look at,
I need to work double teams more, or we need
to throw more 7-on-7, or we need to do more
blitz fit go. And you don't get that to focus on,
you're still trying to, you're guessing, you're like, okay, this
is what I think is going to happen. This is
where I think we're, where the fishing is and, and

(12:46):
we can't be as efficient as practice as we want
to be.

Speaker 2 (12:51):
Absolutely. Finishing up with the Worth County head football coach,
Jeff Hammond. Sorry, folks, we have no game to talk about.

Speaker 1 (12:59):
And I know that not only upsets coach Hammond, but
upsets me. We're trying to talk about these football games,
but anyway, we'll have one to talk about next week, coach.

Speaker 2 (13:12):
And, We wish you the best of luck. And I'm
excited to see you, too.

Speaker 1 (13:16):
You know, you guys are coming off, and I know
there were some problems, but you guys are coming off
a big win against Brooks.

Speaker 2 (13:23):
So you want to take that momentum and keep it rolling.

Speaker 1 (13:25):
There's just a lot of different, I don't know, factors
that can play into just this one game not being
able to play.

Speaker 4 (13:34):
Well, I mean, it is what it is.

Speaker 3 (13:36):
I mean, we've got to adapt and adjust and move forward,
and we can't dwell on it. Of course, we like
to play. The good news of it is that we're
not losing the game. It's just when we're playing, it's different.
It puts us on a pretty good stretch where we
have early turnaround play, Thomasville, Fitzgerald, and then Cairo. So,
I mean, that's a four-game stretch, and then we have

(13:59):
an open week before we get region play. So, I mean,
we've got a lot of football to play, and it's
still all in front of us, and we'll take it
one week at a time and and do as good
as we can do. And hopefully by the next couple
of weeks, we're playing really good football.

Speaker 2 (14:15):
Absolutely. Well, that's the right way to look at it. Coach,
thanks so much for joining us. Thanks for nothing.

Speaker 4 (14:23):
I mean, if you can control the weather, we wouldn't
be here right now.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
You're right.

Speaker 4 (14:28):
You're right.

Speaker 2 (14:29):
Just have a little fun with you. Coach, thanks so
much for joining us. We'll talk to you next week.

Speaker 4 (14:32):
All right. See you, Bill.

Speaker 1 (14:36):
Our show brought to you again by Phoebe Orthopedics and
Sports Medicine. Big thanks to those guys for stepping up
and sponsoring our weekly talk with Jeff Hammond, head coach
of the Worth County Rams. We will be back next week, hopefully,
fingers crossed, talking about a football game.

Speaker 2 (14:51):
We'll see you then.
