Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, guys, welcome in to our coach's show. Man,
I always look forward to talking to the head coach
of the Worth County Rams. Of course, that would be
the man you see on your screen there, the one,
the only, Jeff Hammond.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Coach, how's it going?
Speaker 3 (00:16):
It's pretty good, Phil. How are you doing, man?
Speaker 2 (00:19):
We're doing good.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
How was your Labor Day holiday, the long weekend, I guess?
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Did you guys practice yesterday? I know a lot of
teams did.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
Oh, of course.
Speaker 4 (00:28):
We went yesterday morning, got our work done, and had
an afternoon where we could decompress a little bit.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
I got you. And that's always a good thing.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
I know most of the teams practice on Monday or
Labor Day, whenever. I guess it always falls on Monday.
And it tends to kind of recharge the kids. Because
we are here in, I guess, what, week four? As
we're starting off week four?
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Season's flying by, isn't it?
Speaker 3 (00:56):
It's all upon us. It just seems like yesterday.
Speaker 4 (01:00):
We were in camp.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
Unbelievable. It always does that way.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
You know, I'm a big advocate for the season starting later.
I mean, I wrote a story that featured you guys
and some other teams. I mean, got to play the
schedule like it is. But even, you know, with the
way it is now, starting earlier, in fact, this was
the earliest start we've ever had to a high school
football season in Georgia. And, uh, obviously now here we
(01:25):
are just at Labor Day or one day later and
the season's.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
One week shy of being halfway over.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
Incredible.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
So coach, let's talk about, uh, what's going on with
you guys.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
Uh, 2-0 on the season and, uh, pretty good start
to the year for your Worth County Rams because you
haven't played the easiest of teams so far.
Speaker 4 (01:49):
Yeah, we, we, we're, we're doing pretty good right now. Um,
Like everybody else, we still have places that we've got
to clean up. We were a lot more physical and
tackled a lot better yesterday.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
I mean, last Friday on defense, which makes me happy.
Speaker 4 (02:04):
So, just trying to get better every day and get
ready to play a good Thomasville team.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
Well, after the– I mean, it was a pretty high-scoring
game against Brooks. That was the– technically the– First game
of the year, of course, you guys beat Brooks County
to 49-35. I was just looking to pull that score
and make sure I had it right. And then you
come back and your defense punches a shutout.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
So you had to be pleased with that.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
Any time you allow the opponent nothing, that's about as
much as you can ask for from your defense. And
offense put up 31 points. 31-0 win over Early County.
Speaker 4 (02:42):
Yeah, I thought we did some good things. We went
out and got a three and out and They had
a snafu on their punt, and we got it down
there close and didn't score a touchdown, kicked a field goal,
but it came right out after that. I think we
got continuous stops. I really think it was three or
four possessions before they got their first first down.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
We were able to put some touchdowns on the.
Speaker 4 (03:05):
Board and ended up 31 at half, and they chose
to take a running clock, so it wasn't very much
going on in the second half.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
So what.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Did you have a chance to play some of your
younger guys in that second half? Tell us kind of
what your mindset was with that, when you have a
big lead like that and a running clock.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
Well, for us last week, we haven't had enough football.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
I got you.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
We needed to play.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
And my guys who play every day on snaps, they
need to get in play and shit.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
And you can practice all you want, but when You play.
Speaker 4 (03:46):
Just a half, and I bet each side of the
ball in the first half was less than 25 snaps. So,
I mean, that's less than a quarter of practice. So
we tried to keep them in the game, really working
on things that we needed to get better at in
the second half, and not trying to take everything they
(04:10):
were giving us, but we just tried to get a
little bit better and use that time as since it
was going to be a running clock is, is to
get better and get ready to go from here on out.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
Well, how do you, what do you, what do you
make of your team so far? I mean, you are
two and a, I just mentioned, you've really had two
games that, you know, almost a different type games as
far as the final score was concerned. Plus you played
two games. Don't nobody needs to make any mistake. Early
County is a good football team. They're struggling a little bit, but,
You know, they got a lot of their starters back
(04:40):
from last year, so they're still a good football team.
And so that was a good football team you beat.
That was a good football team you beat in Brooks County.
So you've gotten off to a good start, but you've
done it against a couple of pretty good programs, Coach.
Speaker 4 (04:51):
Yeah, I mean, but to me, it's what we talked
about the last couple of weeks.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
It's been practice time.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
Last week was the first week in a month that
we had a normal week of practice and didn't have to.
stay up here to beat the wet bowl or didn't
have a lot of storm in the afternoon. So, and I,
and I made a comment about, all right, we're starting
a lot of football team again. And, and, and that
showed Friday night, we, we had some, some things that
(05:19):
went well and we did really well, but we still
have some of those growing pain things going on that
we've got to get cleaned up.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
And you're right. I mean, we don't.
Speaker 4 (05:29):
Have a easy schedule where we're just going to go
out there and, You can take it for granted. We're
going to win no matter how we play. We have
to play at a higher level early in the year,
which is good for us.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
It's going to make us grow up. So and then
this week is no different.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Yeah, 100 percent.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
In fact, let's flip the page and let's talk about
the next team up, because you're right. You have played
a couple of good teams and you got another place.
that you're about to play. That would be the Thomasville
Bulldogs of head coach DeLay. I mean, everybody knows about Thomasville.
They've got a solid ball club. Tell us about what
(06:06):
you see when you look at Thomasville. What kind of
team can fans expect to see in this week's opponent?
Speaker 3 (06:11):
I mean, they're playing extremely hard.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
It's kind of hard to tell on tape actually how
big they are, but they're fast and they play hard.
They do a really good job. and their scheme on
both sides of the ball. Quarterback is dynamic. He can
really go, so you've got to have a good plan
for him so he doesn't beat you. And they've got
good skilled kids around them, so it's going to be
(06:39):
a definite challenge.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
So Thomasville, looking at their schedule, they come in at 1-1.
Now they lost a tough one in the opener, but
they've been able to bounce back.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
So you know that Thomasville.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Would love nothing more than to knock off you guys
being the defending champs. I mean, that's always making the
bullseye on your back that much bigger anyway, right?
Speaker 4 (07:03):
Well, especially after the last two years. Two years ago,
we had a walk-off field goal at the end of
the game and beat them by one. And then last year,
we ended up tying it within the last two minutes
and going overtime. And we scored, kicked extra point. They scored,
went for two, and we got interception. So, The last
(07:25):
two times we played, we won both of them by
a combined of two points. So I really think that
they'll be ready for us and wouldn't make them any
happier than.
Speaker 1 (07:36):
Knock us off. Well, and again, I talked about it.
I just pulled it up. They lost to a really
good Cairo team. Of course, we know now, unfortunately, that
game that I was talking about was, I thought, going
to be a very much anticipated game between you guys
and Cairo again. Going back to the weather affected that game.
Obviously going to be rescheduled for later. But then they
(07:59):
come off with a big win over a good Bainbridge team. And, again,
I talk about records a lot, how that can be
pretty misleading. Jamie DeVos has done a pretty good job
there at Bainbridge. But Thomasville coming off of that loss
to Cairo looked good against Bainbridge. So that kind of
tells you where their mindset is and kind of how
they're playing.
Speaker 4 (08:17):
Well, you know, we always talk about this is sometimes
losing one makes you better in.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
The long run.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
Yep, yep.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
And that is obvious with Thomasville.
Speaker 4 (08:28):
But if you go back to the Cairo game, I mean,
first half, they're inside the 20 twice and don't come
away with points. And then second, it's an eight-nothing ballgame
at halftime. And in the second half, it seemed like
two or three big plays that Cairo made. It wasn't
that– Thomasville was ever out of it. I thought they
(08:51):
were right there neck and neck the majority of the game.
If you take away four or five plays, it could
be a different ball game.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
So this game, where's it going to be, Coach?
Speaker 3 (09:00):
We're going to be down in Thomasville at 8 o'clock.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
8 o'clock. That's kind of unusual, too.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
Most teams have gone to the 7.30 kick, but this
will be at 8 o'clock. Maybe it allows a little
bit longer time to let somebody eat after the thunderstorms.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Get out of the way. Man, that was another problem.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
Fortunately, it sounds like you guys dodged that, but that
continues to be a menace with a lot of teams.
All right, so 8 o'clock, I was just looking ahead,
not that we're looking ahead past Thomasville, but you got Fitzgerald, K-Road,
so it's not going to get any easier, not that
it's been easy so far, Coach.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
We got a tough three-game stretch, that's for sure.
Speaker 4 (09:39):
Thomasville on the road, then we come back with Fitzgerald,
and then we have K-Road at home, so There is
going to be a three-good stretch to test.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Our mantle, and we'll have an open week to heal
up all our bumps and bruises and get into our
region play.
Speaker 1 (09:59):
I do like what you said, though, and I'm sure
fans that are watching this are going to like the
comment that, like you said, this past Wednesday, your team's
finally starting to look like a football team. That can
only mean good things or at least good news up
to this point, finally starting to catch up.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
The repetitions are, hopefully.
Speaker 4 (10:19):
We hope, and hopefully we get another good week of
practice in this week where we continue to grow and
get better and get more confident in our jobs. And
I think that's a lot of where we're at now
with having kids that didn't play a whole lot last
year or maybe they played a bunch but they played
a different position is being confident in what.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
They're supposed to do.
Speaker 4 (10:42):
And it looks like that a little bit where they're
a little tentative rather than, all right, this is my job.
Let's go do it and go do it full speed.
And I thought last week it started to give us
a look like that in practice, and we just got
to carry over the games.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
You mentioned the bumps and bruises. I mean, how is
the health of the football team? Because that's two pretty
physical teams that you played.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
We lost a corner the other night.
Speaker 4 (11:09):
Came up back to tackle and ended up dislocating this
wrist and had a broken arm, which– Hopefully we get him.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
Back six to eight weeks.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
Other than that, it's typical football injuries. It's little shoulders
and ankles and all like that. Nothing that's going to
make anybody miss significant playing time, but it does hurt.
We all know it hurts, but sometimes we've got to
cowboy up and play through some pain.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
Yeah, that's tough, man. Corner is a tough position to play.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
So hopefully you'll have somebody slide in there and take
his spot.
Speaker 4 (11:45):
Well, we've been playing three or four all season anyway.
It's going to be where we had a little bit
of depth. Hopefully we continue to get better at that,
and hopefully he gets well real soon. All right.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
Well, Coach, thanks so much for joining us.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
Glad to hear that so far the weather has not
impeded any more practice time. Hopefully that trend will continue
this week, because you've got a big one coming up
against the Tomsville Bulldogs over at Veterans Memorial Stadium, one
of the troops. iconic venues in South Georgia to play
high school football. I've always said it's important that Thomasville
(12:24):
high school football is always good. And I mean that
for everybody, because as they say, a rising tide lifts
all boats. And I think with all the history in
high school football in Georgia, Thomasville is a big part
of that.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
And so it's going to be a tough place to
play Friday night.
Speaker 4 (12:39):
Well, it's always a tough place to play. They do
a really good job. It has a great environment. Their
fans are outstanding. They love Thomasville football, which they should.
They're very into the game, and it's fun to go
in there.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
Absolutely.
Speaker 1 (12:55):
So, Worth County fans, get over there, kind of minimize
or at least neutralize some of that noise that we
know the Thomasville fans are going to make, and let's
make sure that the Worth County Rams can hear your
cheers as well.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
Coach, best of luck as you guys go to Thomasville
Friday night.
Speaker 3 (13:11):
I'll see you next week.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
Okay, Coach.
