When To Not Plant in Fall

A handful of plants cannot tolerate a fall planting

Fred. In a recent show,you talked about fall is a good time
for planting almost everything, but thereare exceptions, right, There are some
exceptions, but the exception is notso much the planting as how the plant
has grown. I was unfounded onetime when I pulled into a nursery owned
and operated by some people older thanme, probably in my present age.

There were three great, big farmwagons with oaks doug and sitting on that
wagon in the shade of a humongoustree and shade of the building. And
I looked at the owner. Isaid, my good man, you don't
dig oaks this time of year.He said, oh, yes, you
do. He said if you getpast August fifteenth, you better quit.

But he said, if you digthem now and do it right, said
them the side and let him continueto mature, you'll have good luck with
oaks, so that you can sellthem and plant them right then, or
you can keep them under let's callit coverage, which would be either gravel
cover or mulch cover or whatever,and keep them in good shape. You
can pull them out of that mulchpit put them in the ground, even

with using the jackhammer. As wetalked one time, it is I go
to one thing though, when termsof the plants, I would recommend that
the list is longer than this.But dogwood, magnolia, oh my,
several other plants. You just don'tdig them in the fall. They have

a different kind of roots, soto speak, and to dig them and
cut root at the point, let'scall it past August fifteenth, you're putting
that plant in jeopardy. Now,quite often it will succeed, but I
like to get them dug ahead oftime, if possible. Then you can
grow them in containers. You canput them in bald and burlap in the
mulch pits, et cetera, etcetera, and bring them out to plant
