On the horse capital of the world, it's Horsetails with
Ursul Ellis. We'll talk about the horses, the people, and
the history of the thoroughbred industry.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
A secretary of that.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
What's the flight to an athletes? Now live from Kentucky's
Bluegrass region. Here's Ursul.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
All right, we're on. Well, good morning everyone, and once
again no unexpectedly we're broadcasting from home.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
And now we could have gotten out, but Ursul ran
into a problem.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
That's what it did. And it hurt. Yeah, he had
the proud owner of a real.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
Nice sized kidney stone. So got that taken care of.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
Yesday.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Listen, we went he went to the er, you know,
he had a lot of pain, went to the er
over here in Paris, and they sent him right away
to Winchester, to the Clark County Medical Center, to a
doctor named doctor Crowe, who I understand is originally from
Bourbon County.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Is that right? And you know, of course when they
said that, I said who is he? And they said
he's the best. So Ursa went over there, got that
procedure or whatever you call it, and some more phain
that was the best part.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
Came home yesterday. I want to thank Matt Howard. Matt
Howard is a good friend of ours. He's a manager
out at Warhorse, and he stayed with Ursul through a
whole thing as I was at home with Betsy.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
Of course. Yeah, he could have done it with that man.
I mean I couldn't have done it without him. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
So everybody's been to nice Bo Robertson and then Robinson
and people at the radio station and stuff. So he's back,
he's fine, he's drinking water.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
REUSSI you gotta drink water when you have kidney stones.
I didn't know that much about it, but anyway, did
say you knew, no wonder I had a kidney stone.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
Yeah, and that he didn't get any water in I
wonder he had a kidney stone.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
But if you happen to be listening with your probably
in bed. But anyway, I won't say it. Anyway, it
took me ninety three years to develop business stone, and
I didn't deal with that water. I don't like water
because of his shoe shoe in it. Yeah, and I do, but.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
I had to drink it. Really, So anyway, we're happy
to be to be back. We thought, well, he'd been
in the hospital yesterday. We still we do the shoe
from home and sit here.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Last night what time, I don't know, about eight.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
O'clock maybe something like that. It was after seven, yeah,
something like that. So I talked to doctor Crowe really nice.
I said, you know, he's got to get home to
do this radio shows. He just couldn't believe that your age,
you're still doing you know stuff. I said.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
He writes his own commercials and everything. That's great. Yeah,
he enjoys doing it, and I think he moved my
schedule up up so you could go home. Yeah. So's
he's a good guy.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
You all keep that in mind, doctor Crow.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
And he did a good job on me. That's who
fine like a human being this morning.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Yeah, that's something, something that's that painful but relatively simple
to fix. I wonder what people did in the old.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
Days before they did that. Well, this mine was pretty big. Yeah,
and normally men pass them, but this couldn't be passed. Yeah, no,
this is this was the sides of a bowling ball. Right,
It felt like a bowling It felt like a Well, anyway,
(07:18):
we're back, so glad to be back. Yeah. I have
had any hurt me so bad in my life. Not
the operations. And they put me in to sleep, of course, Yeah,
to do the procedure. Yeah. I'm not going to tell
you how they get you. No, no, no, no, we've
talked about it enough. You can figure it out then. Enough.
Now that's enough. That's anyway.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
You back another day for the show and the Cats
play at noon?
Speaker 2 (07:45):
Is it noon or eleven? Oh? I thought it was

the guy. He went out of the locker room, went
on up, went.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
Up to the stairs and all that jazz and talked
to the guy. Yeah, isn't that nice? Yeah? Whoever was
with him said, boy, that just made his Ye. That's Mark,

I mean, stuff just coming pouring out of his eyeballs.
One day they're running six stakes down out of the day.
They're running the Leonardo States at Turfoot. Is that right now?
Are they running in the day today? I hope? So,

in a minute. I work and I tell you no,

ye know, they had hardly no stakes from last week
we did. I've got to announce. Yeah, went on top
(11:26):
of that collected filler we're just talking about. But so
we've got some stuff that we're going to do around here.
We've got in the history to do on some past
winners and the Ceana steaks and the what's the other stakes?
I forgot its lo They say Canada lack Canada steaks,
(11:53):

They'd been running at Delmont, haven't they no, Sana? Oh
(12:15):
my goodness. Yeah. And the fire was a little closer
now it was just blowing the other way. I think
some people moved the horses man and that id and
then they didn't move on. They had a cancer one
day because the smoke was so heavy.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
Yeah, you know when horses there are any humans breathing
that stuff. What the they had offered to move people.

than alone, because since we've been married, haven't. No, you haven't.
You're a smart guy. Now he's looking for trouble. Oh
that's exactly right. Well anyway, anyway you want to flavored
(13:27):

be able to get in touch with with John Nicholson.
Yeah maybe he.
Speaker 1 (13:38):

out to the to the farm. Yeah, and he's on
his day to be on the show.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
Huh was this his day to show? I'm all tracked.
I think so, but I'm not sure. He and Michael
Bolling alternate. Yeah, yeah. I called Mike and told him,
and then I left message for John. So I don't know.
John's busier and a bird dog, you know he really Yeah,
but he comes and no, yeah, days longer than Michael. Yeah,
(14:14):
it's a good interview. Fun. Yeah, he's wanting to talk.

Speaker 1 (14:19):
I can't quite insult him like I insult Michael.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
They they put up in a really nice shed for
two horses. Oh it's a beautiful shed. Yeah, really nice
and deep deep, Yeah, a big one. And that's good
because it was so old.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
Now how old temmy? He's thirty two?
Speaker 2 (14:41):
No, I think he's either thirty or thirty one now
now he was thirty at something last year. Then okay,
that's as long as horses for you. I know, that's amazing.
Except little Silver Charm, Yeah, that little many that Michaels
Gott good. Which time about third is? Now? Yeah?

he's the real guy. Prince is over there and the
Mediterranean with a little, tiny little.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
Kingdom and all that jazz. You could come up with
some fun names for him, you know.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
Uh, is that the guy that married the movie star?
Speaker 1 (18:03):
Yeah, Grace Kelly, Grace Kelly. Yeah, see if he if

It was with Jimmy Stewart or somebody who was in
a wheelchair, and they witnessed a murder in an.
Speaker 2 (18:43):
Apartment building close to me. I can't remember what rear window. Yeah, yeah,
that's a bond. So see there's another name for your window,
Yeah I is, but that would be something related to Grace.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
I guess, Jimmy, Jimmy Grace would be a good name
for the horses.
Speaker 2 (19:04):
One word. It was the guy that was confined to
to a wheelchair. Yeah, he'd broke his leg. Is that
what I knew that? I remember they had it propped up, Yeah,
and he was watching what was going on and lived
in this apartment building four yards you know. Yeah, no, yeah,
(19:24):
so they turned up to the guy that he committed
a murder was coming after him.
Speaker 1 (19:29):
Yeah, that's it.
Speaker 2 (19:32):
Alfred Hitchcock was one. Was that one I offered? I think? So? Yeah, okay,
all right? How about everybody over a clay Ward in
Paris Playbot Agency. They over there selling horse insurance right
and the left. They've been doing it since nineteen thirty one,
and they know what you're doing and they've been very

knowledge of the horse business and they play great attention
to detail and give you great service that'll keep you going. Yeah. Yeah,

I don't guess you'd be going there if you needed
the funeral par But that just gives you an idea
where the location over it's eleven o two Main Street
in Paris to be exacted and uh Indian Creek, you
know you want to might ask about the services they
(21:43):

of the look. I can look at the ones that
their running to day. That's more productive. They are running
at the Fairground six stakes races today and I'm pretty
sure that's why James is down there. But I'm sure

the fairground. I can't remember him well. Anyway, they were

them they've got work belts, they've got I'm looking at
this thing and it's just the selections amazing. The colors
(34:56):
are amazing. The leather itself is English bridle leather and
it's beautiful. Can't do any better than that. And of course,
now guess what, it's fowling and breeding season, and there's
of course a bunch of stuff you need, and you
might have to have mayorn ex straps. Somebody gets in

named Old Friends. And every time they sell an Old
Friends turnout halter, do they get twenty dollars or twenty percent?
I forget anyway, if you're going to buy a turnout hawker,

Speaker 2 (47:41):
He's an interesting guy.
Speaker 1 (47:43):
Well when we first met Hill, well I first did
because he would do stuff at pony Club and you
know know who he was. And I met his mom,
absolutely lovedly person. They's a nice family.
Speaker 2 (47:58):
So at any rate, I think they're from Virginia, seems
to me, I can't remember.
Speaker 1 (48:04):
Anyway, he has a horse farm and land specialist and
a full time realtor.
Speaker 2 (48:11):
Now he's got all.
Speaker 1 (48:13):
Those things after his name. About what kind of association
of realtors and National Association and accredited buyer and senior specialists,
on and on and on. Now at the same time,
he's a licensed horse trainer in eleven States. Years of
experience with thoroughbreds, people, chasers, jumpers, events, fox centers, so
(48:38):
on and so forth.
Speaker 2 (48:39):
He really knows and hasn't done it all in the
horse business.
Speaker 1 (48:44):
And that's what you need when you are looking to
buy or sell or whatever a horse farm, because something
is specific and is raising, breeding, training, and so on.
Speaker 2 (49:00):
It's different.
Speaker 1 (49:01):
I mean, you could have worked forever in a day's
saddle breads got nothing to do with thorowbreads. I mean
the breeding might be comfortable. I don't know, there's a
difference there. But anyway, he knows the questions to ask,
so like, for instance, where.
Speaker 2 (49:19):
Do you put the barn? Oh okay, let's look this.
Speaker 1 (49:21):
What are you gonna do? Are you gonna breed? Are
you gonna breed for self? Are you going to breed
for yourself? Racing training, whatever kind of are you going
to ride?
Speaker 2 (49:31):
For Heaven's sake? All these things have to go in
to the equation. What are your long term plans? And
then you get back and he checks the barns and
the souls and he lost all this kind of stuff.
So that's what you need. You need a guy like
(49:51):
Hill Parker who's got two parts. He's a realtor, super
realtor and a good horseman. And that don't go there
if you don't have somebody's like that to help you,
because it could be tricky. And go to his website
and take a good look at it because it's always
(50:12):
graded Lexhorsefarms dot com, lexhorsefarms dot com. And he'll's uh

they've bet it, you know, so you you you can
go on that online and picking it. That's and it's
very reasonable fatch everything. I think it's you know, two
hundred and seventy five dollars a year to subscribe to that.
Speaker 1 (01:04:19):
Well, you know what's interesting about that now somebody that
best the races and wants to go forward and figure
out who to bet and.
Speaker 2 (01:04:28):
Which way, who's going to win? All that stuff they're loaded,
and what's everything you need? Yeah, they give you how
the trainers records and everything the riters records and paying
you need is right there. And then for Ursul, he's
not going forward with this information. When he writes his commercials.
Speaker 1 (01:04:47):
He goes and checks and looks back in the horses category,
not back at their race record, and look back at
the mayor's produce record.
Speaker 2 (01:04:55):
Yeah. So you there, there's all this stuff in the
world you need if you want to go forward or
you want to check what you've heardy. Yeah, it's it's great.
They've got those instant results, you know they and as
a print they come up, but maybe they run a
ration a half an hour later. They've got all the
mutuals and everything.
Speaker 4 (01:05:15):
Right there for you.
Speaker 2 (01:05:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:05:16):
I like the part where you go in there and
you put a horse that's name in the space.
Speaker 2 (01:05:21):
Yeah, and you try to remember the year. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:05:25):
If you can't, you put that in there and you
clit and boom, there's anything you want to know about
that horse.
Speaker 2 (01:05:33):
It's just amazing, like I'm going to do something the
next hour. And a couple of Phillias that once takes
a few years ago in some of these states. They
I just press them in and get just give them
them the name and the birthday, poland date, and here
comes all this information across a pedigree, race record, you
(01:05:54):
name it, they got it.
Speaker 1 (01:05:55):
And remember years ago you have to go through those books.
Speaker 2 (01:05:59):
Oh yeah, books.
Speaker 1 (01:06:01):
Weighed about twenty pounds anyway.
Speaker 2 (01:06:04):
Okay, so that's what we're talking about, is bookstops, research
information services that they put me. They they kept me
in business, and uh, they're really nice people, so I
recommend them. Sure, okay, moving right along. Where are we.
Speaker 1 (01:06:25):
Reopena?
Speaker 2 (01:06:28):
I reopening the station ninety? Well, well go on, let's

Speaker 2 (01:07:04):

Speaker 1 (01:08:37):
That's another thing I like about James. When James shows up,
he's up on.
Speaker 2 (01:08:43):
Who's we're heading for the derby? Oh yeah, that's fun.
So anyway, Cavaleri was read by alas Star bloodstuff. Then

we gotta be Si come here, Joe, good old Joe.
Speaker 1 (01:11:24):
Funny stuff. Now, I don't know if you know do
you know who published Joe's stuff when he wrote it?
Was he writing his column for the New York Times.
Speaker 2 (01:11:39):
Of the Oh? Was the New York Paper? And I
don't think it's a paper that Harold.
Speaker 1 (01:11:44):
Now, what was the New York Harold?
Speaker 2 (01:11:46):
That was the big paper when they used to you
back in the nineteen forties. Now, Jackie, yeah, this is public.
This is twenty in nineteen fifty three. That was after
he died. But yes, Barnes, come.
Speaker 1 (01:12:02):
Yeah, I think Red Smith picked his stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:12:07):
I'm trying to see you The New York Herald Tribune. Oh, Harold, gotcha. Yeah,
I wonder if he wrote a column a week, a
column at twice a week. That's interesting, once a week,
once a week. The Smith used to complain about that.
(01:12:29):
Why they wanted more, No that.
Speaker 1 (01:12:34):
He just.
Speaker 2 (01:12:37):
Everybody wanted to read his column. Nobody read his that's funny. Well,
they used to have about six papers, ten papers in
New York in those days. Now they got the New
York Times Post.
Speaker 1 (01:12:59):
And that.
Speaker 2 (01:12:59):
I don't know any other one.
Speaker 1 (01:13:02):
Hey, I heard somewhere.
Speaker 2 (01:13:06):
The guy that owns Gulf Stream.
Speaker 1 (01:13:09):
Was talking about closing that track in about three years.
Speaker 2 (01:13:13):
Yeah. Did you ever read any more about that.
Speaker 1 (01:13:19):
Group?
Speaker 2 (01:13:20):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (01:13:21):
Yeah, I didn't see any Well, I didn't have time
to look after that. But I just wondered if you'd
heard anymore, because gosh, you know.
Speaker 2 (01:13:31):
What they said is they couldn't guarantee they could continue
after three years. Sounds like they want something. They must
be in a dispute. Sounds like a dispute and here's
what we're going to do if you don't step up.
Maybe it's the state, you know. I have no idea.
(01:13:54):
I just wondered if you had heard what time is
it that time to read a College. I guess i'd
better do claven for I do that, okay, And they're

another local business that's uh just just combines all the
best things.
Speaker 1 (01:16:31):
About small town stuff. They're very good, they're very smart,
They've got good connections in the insurance business. And at
the same time you get small towns, friendly small towns.
You don't have to press a button. And I love
it when they say press a button for English and
you get somebody in Bangledesh. You can't understand that all anyway,
(01:16:56):
I don't need to gripe about that because we're here
in Bourbon County and we've got Hopo insurance Agency. We've
been in let's see thirty some years, thirty plus years.
Speaker 2 (01:17:11):
We've been doing business with Hope Well.
Speaker 1 (01:17:13):
It's so well thought of in town. I think that's
where we first heard the name because the yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:17:21):
They we moved in and talked to people we knew,
and you know, we like to do business locally if
at all possible, and this was a bingo, I'll tell you.
So what they do is they are an independent insurance agency.
They don't work for the big guys all around the
(01:17:42):
world who say press one ingrunner. They work for you.
Speaker 1 (01:17:47):
And how they do that is they use a carefully
selected group of financially found, reputable companies. So they shop
around when these good companies, so they give you the
best coverage at the best prices. So and while they're
doing that, they can give you with a no cost,
(01:18:08):
no obligation review in comparison.
Speaker 2 (01:18:11):
Of what you got now, it doesn't get any better,
nut you know that.
Speaker 1 (01:18:16):
So Hopeful Company in Paris established in nineteen fifty five.
Now that's a long time ago.
Speaker 2 (01:18:25):
If you haven't been doing a good job, you wouldn't
be in business since nineteen fifty five. And that's the truth.
So it's a local number in Paris that think by
nine ninet eight seven two.
Speaker 1 (01:18:39):
Three four seven or stopped in the offices at eight
twenty Main Street in Paris. It's on the right as
you drive in main streets one way, can't miss It'll
stop in, they'll.
Speaker 2 (01:18:52):
Say, hi, come on in. They're great people, do a
great job for you. All righty Who was that now?
Oh yeah, okay, well moving right alone. And Gavin, if
(01:19:14):
you tried to get you got oh good, Thank you, Gavin,
appreciate that. And bron how are you this morning?
Speaker 4 (01:19:25):
I'm all good? How about you guys? What's what's the
Kentucky weather report?
Speaker 2 (01:19:32):
That's uh, the weather report is Jackie, you pay more
attention to it. The snow is still on the ground.
Oh yeah, we got three four inches still we hadn't melted. Yeah,
it's supposed to start.
Speaker 1 (01:19:45):
Raining any minute.
Speaker 2 (01:19:46):
Yeah, and by tonight it's the temperatures are going.
Speaker 1 (01:19:50):
To start to drop and in the day or so
it's going to be zero. Yeah, and whatever falls out
of the sky sooner or later tones to snow. We
are in one area of one to four a little
bit closer to to the sixth.
Speaker 2 (01:20:07):
So it stinks. The weather stinks.
Speaker 4 (01:20:12):
It's bad. Even the Kentucky weather, that's bad.
Speaker 2 (01:20:17):
Yeah, that's typical. Hey, did you go to the Kentucky
and Mississippi State basketball game?
Speaker 4 (01:20:25):
I did, as I went over there, and there's a
really good game. It was packed. There's all a couple
of thousand Kentucky fans were there. I guess.
Speaker 2 (01:20:37):
How many.
Speaker 4 (01:20:39):
Maybe a couple of thousand, not a lot, it was,
it was. It was as many as there has been
a bit some years before. But yeah, deep number. You
could hear from gold big Boy back and forth.
Speaker 2 (01:20:51):
Yeah. Yeah, Well I'm surprised they beat you, you know,
right fourteenth, you know.
Speaker 4 (01:20:58):
Yeah, they got a hard stretch a Missigan State because
they played Kentucky and then Tennessee Old Miss today, No Auburn,
and then I'll think, uh, they've got four ranked teams
they play in a row. I'll get Old Miss today
and there's one more. I remember who it is that
they got one more ranked team, and it's it's a
(01:21:20):
really tough stretch. They got played.
Speaker 2 (01:21:24):
In the Turkey. Please, I believe Texas A and M.
Today they played Texas and I think so.
Speaker 4 (01:21:31):
I don't know I think that much.
Speaker 5 (01:21:34):
Eleven o'clock today, I think so here here, but anyway,
but everything is really if we're quiet here at the moment.
I have just recovered from a.
Speaker 1 (01:21:50):
We're supposed to go to zero in a couple of days.
Speaker 4 (01:21:53):
Yeah, it's gonna be. It's eighteen here till we pandemonia.
There's supposed to be another winter store late this week,
and it's gonna go pretty far a south. And I
think we're kind of on the edge of where we
might get something or we might get nothing.
Speaker 2 (01:22:11):
Yeah, oh, well, it's amazing. Well what's going on down
your way?
Speaker 4 (01:22:17):
Oh? Are kind of interesting. Case of the week is
we had a horse that had a choke as they
had eaten some full of This horse choked on They
just choked on like a senior pellet type feed. And
uh that the owner didn't catch it right away and
it's probably choked for about a day before they brought
(01:22:38):
it to the hospital. We we cleared it pretty easily
and it had some pneumonia. We got you know, aspiration pneumonia.
It's you know, it's just where they get the spagis
gets backed up and then that's saliven and feed material
and all gets gets into the wind pipe there. And
when I stopped the horses didn't have the whole lot
(01:23:00):
of speed material and in the wind pipe. But I
thought it would probably the okay, but ended up getting
some at bracks money. You know, we put it on
anabiotics there at the start and so came back still
has some fever and so we did was of transtracual
wash and you could see some infection in there and
treated it again. And yeah, those things can be pretty
(01:23:20):
tricky because everybody's probably seen horses choke, and you know,
most of the time, or at least a lot of
the time, you know they've cleared that choked by the
times let are in there and makes it to the farm.
But when some of these bad ones, you have to
go in there and you know, past the two like
you would for a colic and date the horse real
(01:23:42):
heavy and just go in there and just literally try
to wash that thing out or wash it on down
to the stomach. And they tend to get stuff in
two different places, either kind of right with their connect
meats onto their shoulder or they'll get called up the
stop gus goes over the base of the heart, and
that's another spot where they can get cagged up. But
(01:24:02):
we've got just more some plug and now try of pneumonia.
Been been doing okay. And the other problem you run
into is horse is to have chronic choke, because that's
any horse potentially can choke. But these horses that have
chronic and then you have to worry that they have
some type of narrowing in their esophagusts that you know,
(01:24:24):
like a stricture, so things just don't go down there right.
And you know another is you can pass in any
scope like same one you'd use the scope of stomach
and you may see it narrowing. I've I've had somewhere
I dropped into a spot where there was a diverticul
It went like a blending of the esophagus and you
looked up to see where where the feet had to
(01:24:45):
go back out and it was even hard to get
the soap back up in there. And sometimes we do
a burium swallow, you like you get people that gi
theory for you drink to carry him and to do
X ray. They've also had some we have tube them
with some bury them and find those trictures that those
ones that are chronic can be really tough because there's
(01:25:06):
not a lot that you can offer sometimes on those
horses to try to move them get better, especially if
there's a ticture, because the apgust just doesn't like surgery
much at all because it's a tube, but it's not
a tube like the intestine is. It's just more just
a muscular to you, without any real distinction past that.
(01:25:27):
So it's a really hard place to do surgery. You know,
oftentimes they're surgery fall the heart. So I think this
horse will do okay. But you know, for chokes, the
big thing is try to look for what cause it.
And as the older horse don't have good teeth, they'll
get the teeth done. Maybe they'll feed them a mash,
try to take them off. Hey if you have to. Uh,
(01:25:51):
it's only the worst ones that choke on posture. You
see most horses even have terrible disease, and so grays
on postures. They've had some that couldn't and then the
others just look for horses at both their feed. That's
another common thing we see. You know, it's just the
bottom of the pecking order horse and eat real fast,
(01:26:12):
it doesn't you well, and they choke, and we just
trying to feed them different. And they make some nice
feeders now for horses. So some horses bolt their feed anyway,
and they make them now they have little cups in
the bottom of their feed tub and so kind of
separates feed out, makes them eat slower. Or you know
the old trick you put bricks in their club or
(01:26:33):
big rocks in there. You know that works too. So
that's one of the things to you know, most of
the time goes okay, that when God had voices die
from toad to get terrible pneumonia. So if that one
that does a lot, or you know, if one doesn't,
you know more a couple of times within a couple
of months than you know, those the ones you got
(01:26:53):
trying to figure them out a bit better and make
some changes.
Speaker 2 (01:26:59):
Them. Yeah, you get into all kinds of weird things.
Down there.
Speaker 4 (01:27:07):
We had a horse at Auburn one time that choked
on the Yeah, like an oil can with a little
plastic rings, don't you pull off the oil can to
pour the oil out. And this horse had choked. It
was a pony actually, and we passed the scope down
there and you could see that there was something in there,
(01:27:28):
but you get you couldn't tell what it was, and
it was probably this pony is probably like four or
five hundred pounds pony. It was situated inches behind the
throat lass where the scope was getting getting stuck. And
so doctor John Schutmachel, all all we can do is
uh to do surgery on this, to try to figure
(01:27:50):
out when we knew the foreign body we could get
a hold of it, and we would try. And so
we laid the pony down and we put the end
of scope in this focus. You did stops have a
really bright light on the end, so as he was
doing the surgical approach down the esophagus, you could see
the light and the end. So we knew where to go.
(01:28:12):
And he went down there and got opened up the
esophagust which is weird. It's muscular, but you can't like
identify you're going through it too. It was something in
this and pulled that oil can pop out and just
sutured up the esophagus itself. Because they're they're real prone
to open up after surgery. And the surgery site did
(01:28:35):
open up, but it healed itself. A little pony did fine.
But I'll never forget that one because you couldn't go
what was he pulled it out, but it was firmly
wedged in there. You know, probably a couple of inches
across one of a little plastic cops.
Speaker 2 (01:28:52):
Okay, all right, Wow, another weird thing from dump.
Speaker 4 (01:29:01):
We would still them in Kentucky too. I tell you
the worst ones that they get one of those big pellets,
or like the rage cues that you feed cattle cattle.
Sometimes I've had them get those in there and they
are a bear to get outsideject to put them under
general anesthesia and trying to wash them out. But those
could be tough. Sometimes those are the ones that I
(01:29:24):
like the lead you say, and you know you hear
different things beat called pellets all that, But I've seen
pretty much anything be as likely to choke a horse
as anything else. So I think you just got me
careful with whatever you feed especially if you get a
horse's phone to it.
Speaker 2 (01:29:40):
All right, but I can When are you coming this way?
Speaker 4 (01:29:45):
Hopefully in about three weeks, I've got them. I'm off
hospital duty right now, but I've got a research project
I'm working on, and then i'll go and clink for
two weeks, and then after that I've got some things.
John wants me a good old friends, so hopefully he'll
be up there sometime after that. So everything goes right
(01:30:09):
in about three weeks, maybe the weather will be better
or it'll be worse.
Speaker 2 (01:30:14):
Can't get any worse. All right, we'll talk. We'll talk
to you next week.
Speaker 4 (01:30:23):
All right, see you later, Stay warm, Thank you, all right,
welcome back.
Speaker 2 (01:30:33):

raised in Kentucky on products from McCauley Feeds. Congratulations to all.
Well the fold season right around. Well, it's a rived,
had it, and now is the time to call McCauley
(01:33:35):
Feeds to arrange for them to put your folds on
a weight monitoring program. Great program and it's totally free
of charge. Here they come to your farm, get the
job done. And it's a matter of fact that some
folds need more attention than others. This called doctor John
Loeu or Amy Porter, Jenny marsh at A found nine

(01:33:58):
Breeders' Cup champions, even our last two Triple Clan winners
were raised on freed for mccaullege. Mccaullege Fees is the
only feed company in the nation to produce products exclusively
for the horse. And that's why when we see that
at McCauley Feeds, it's all about the horse.
Speaker 3 (01:34:19):
Now back to the Thoroughbread Training Center and ursul Ellis.
Speaker 2 (01:34:25):
I want to read something that's Joe Palmer, I made
a mistake, what kind of mistake? To Amy Parker is
her name? And I put a porter sure, I'm sorry
I thought it had been corrected. I thought it had to.
But no, you had to go to the hospittle that's
(01:34:47):
your fault. Okay, all right, Well, the surest way to
write a successful magazine piece is to write about men
and women. For some reason which evades me, the who
seem to know much about one another and proud to
be prudery for him is an obvious suggestion. Feeling this,
(01:35:07):
a man may always make the front pages with an
article on the relative intelligence of animals, I mean other animals,
and most of these the horse comes off badly, and
it has been come to be an article of faith
with some of our sports writers that he is deficient
in intelligence is compared to the other domesticated or semi
(01:35:29):
domesticated animals. A horse cannot pile up boxes on a
platform so he can get it the banana or the ceiling,
because he has no hands with which to pick up
a box, and didn't like bananas anyway. He cannot very
easily be taught to sit on his handquarters and beg
because he cannot be easily supported in this position as
(01:35:50):
a dog can be, and because it's damned undignified position,
either for a horse or a political candidate as horses
realize candidates don't. That doesn't mean the horse isn't smart,
as will be freely granted by anyone who has watched
the Lippasa perform in Madison Square Garden, flowing through intricate
(01:36:13):
maneuvers under what amounts to invisible gidens. The favorite story
in this corner concerns the horse you probably don't remember.
His name was Sands of Pleasure, and he was the
first good horse to come from the fair Play Rock
Sand Cross, which later made famous for Man of War
(01:36:33):
and others. Sands of Pleasure was a stakes horse in
his early years, but as time went on he dropped
down a little, wound up blounding in claiming races blood,
like so many of the horses with the turbulate blood
of fair Play. He had his notions. He was beating
the nose on a post one day, this was before
the days of the finished camera, when the judges put
(01:36:54):
the numbers up immediately and hoped they were right. The
jockey on Sands of Pleasure came back. I was number
in the second slot and pulled up to unsaddle. The
horse tried diligously to throw him, and after he tried
to wrest the lander go m who was holding him,
and to kick several innocent bystander. The trainer was disturbed
(01:37:16):
because the fair play players were prone to grow moody
and and tractable as the goolder, which usually meant the
end of the oration curve. So he talked to the
horse in the oration in which he didn't fit. A
few days later, just to see and Santa Pleasure beating
some five lengths. He came back blowing a little because
he'd given it a good try, but it was otherwise unruffled. Well,
(01:37:40):
if there's a secret to training horses, it's to understand
how horse thinks. This trainer wanted to put two and
two together. Next time he started a horse, he gave
the jockey some unusual instructions. I think you can win
this if you get off fast, he said. If you
do win it, don't come back to the winter circle,
pulled him out to the outside rail inside sands. The
(01:38:04):
Pleasure took the track, held his horses and one pulling
up by a couple of lengths. He came back to
the grand stand and was guided to the outside rail
according to the order and Jocta. Afterwards swore that the
horse turned his head and looked at him. Then sands
a Pleasure took a bit permanent between his teeth, and
the walk in the winter circle were blown. The trainer
(01:38:25):
had figured this one correctly, And at first sands a
Pleasure had disagreed with the placing judges and thought he
had won, and he took it badly. And then another
horse was in the winter spot. In the second he
knew had been beaten, and that was that. And the
third he knew curse well that he had won, and
was having no nonsense about it. Those pre camera days,
(01:38:47):
And it was in those pre camera days it was
the custom of all losing horse players to insist that
the judges were a set of purblind incompetence selected for
the duties after and and I had to which they
did not, which not only couldn't pronounce the words, but
couldn't see the letters. Sense of Pleasure thus proved himself
(01:39:09):
to have about the same judgment as a losing horse player,
which rated him close up behind the chimpanzee and possibly
ahead of the dog. That's wonderful, that's you. You know,
animals are so much smarter on people. When I was
in college, oh, it was just ridiculous. It was like
(01:39:32):
monkeys and dogs.
Speaker 1 (01:39:33):
And had no absolute no brains. And I can't remember
why because it took a couple of anthropologic classes.
Speaker 2 (01:39:43):
And I said, hey, now you know that's not Yeah,
it's not true. They are smart and it's ninety If
you want to do this, oh, I was looking for
something to do. Then I'll do this and then you
wrap it up all right. Well, the Arabian Line was
(01:40:07):
designated to a Rising starbut over the Daily News and
then went on to be the first Grade one winner
side by triple Crown winner Justified, now a Championshire Justified

Speaker 1 (01:41:53):
Okay, I want to say a few words about sally Van,
and I'll bet Jeff and Nobody's going to Turfoy Park
today from the training center, find up brains. Go up
there on sally Van because the weather's going to be
so bad, and you can trust them when they come in,
(01:42:14):
these nice, big, solid, good looking pieces of equipment, and
the guys that are driving their horsemen, they know.
Speaker 2 (01:42:22):
What they're doing.
Speaker 1 (01:42:24):
Got to be careful in weather like this.
Speaker 2 (01:42:26):
You know, you don't want to take a chance.
Speaker 1 (01:42:28):
I mean you ding gong up there with a little tours.
Speaker 2 (01:42:33):
Hooked on your back of your truck. You might be
in trouble.
Speaker 1 (01:42:38):
You know, there was already a wreck this morning out
on an ironworks. So what you want to do if
you want to get up there, get to the races,
go with the people that can get you there for sure.
It's a simple, simple, it's it's not worth thinking about anyway.
Speaker 2 (01:42:55):
And also pulling season coming up, breeding season.
Speaker 1 (01:43:02):
And we always sent our mayors on a sally Van
and I went with them and they were so helpful
and everything. Those guys know what they were doing, and
you'd get.
Speaker 2 (01:43:14):
Somewhere like spendthrift to greet or something, and he knew
all the guys that worked there and all the whatever.
Speaker 1 (01:43:22):
And that's pretty neat.
Speaker 2 (01:43:24):
Really.
Speaker 1 (01:43:24):
You know, you got treated real well, not that you
wouldn't have, but you were with somebody that knew where
to stand, where was your part of the line, where
was the teaser all that stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:43:36):
What you're doing in Sally Van as you're buying into
somebody with real experience. It's it's worth whatever.
Speaker 1 (01:43:44):
So anyway they ship justify, you know, like I said,
it's good enough justify. It's good enough for the third
TURBOI right, okay by you. So anyway, they're great. They've
been in business for it because.
Speaker 2 (01:43:59):
There we in years more than half a century. Wow.
Speaker 1 (01:44:05):
Anyway, their numbers two five five ninety.
Speaker 2 (01:44:08):
Four oh six.
Speaker 1 (01:44:09):
That's two five five ninety four O six and online
at Sally Horse Vans Sally horse Fans dot com two
five five ninety four oh six.
Speaker 4 (01:44:24):
Here.
Speaker 2 (01:44:26):
Yeah, they are nice. People have been around forever. We
went through Pony Club with Nicole when Betsy was in
Tony Club.
Speaker 1 (01:44:35):
Nicole was so anyway, all right, of course we're not
here at the training center, which is of course, guarantee
of their training, you know, to keep that track in
great shape.
Speaker 2 (01:44:50):
You know they're training. Yeah, we'll talk about that in
just a minute. Okay, you're running on to talk about
Lead's secret for s they're running in the lock on.
I had a trick stakes at at then Anita this weekend,
Yeah and back in Oh let's see when was it
(01:45:12):
in nineteen eighty six? I can't believe it. Yeah, it
was one by Lady's Secret who may just have been
the best thing that the secretary was signed. Yeah, he
was a great race may she was, and she was
(01:45:34):
by secretary and a great lady Anne by Ice Capade,
son of the Arctic. The great end was also the
damn of missus Slava Seattle Slugah won stakes. She was
a granddame of believe who was a champion over in Japan,
and the family was I can't remember who trained her
(01:45:57):
Lady's Secret Yeah, Oh, d Wayne Lucas trainder Oh okay,
I just names and she won so many states it's
hard to believe, but I've got a race record of
past performances over here. She was around a little while too,
(01:46:20):
as so as that goes. She was a full eighty two,
she started forty five times. Oh my goodness, and that
you know. She was a horse of the Year as
a four year old in nineteen eighty six, voted horse
of the Year over the coast in eighty six. Why
(01:46:40):
didn't they do that? Let me looking here in a minute,
and she was folded in Oklahoma. Didn't know that? Yeah,
I didn't know either entirely. To the well, I probably
hadn't known it a few years ago. Yeah, exactly. But
(01:47:01):
mister Roberts Pree s t r E S s p
r E. Spree's the Loclahoma bred, and she was horse
of the Year in nineteen forty six as a four
year old nineteen forty six. What did you win in
(01:47:24):
nineteen forty six? What are you talking about? Our lady's secret? Oh,
let's see what made her horse of the Union? Ye,
first start of the year she were in she won
the ol Encino Stakes. Then she won the La Canada
Stakes for the first time in that same year. The
(01:47:51):
next race you won, that was a great one. That won,
the great one said about Mata Regia States. And then
she again and second to love Smitten, giving her some weight.
Speaker 1 (01:48:06):
In the.
Speaker 2 (01:48:11):
Apple Blossom Steaks at Oaklahoma, went to New York. The
next races, who won the Great One Shoe v States,
came back against the boys in the Metropolitan Handicap, ran third,
Disctaba linked in the quarter for all the money, came
back in the Hampstead Handicap and won that. No she
(01:48:34):
went second unuse she went who beaterr and Deer beat her,
but she was getting fifteen pounds. Then the Molly Pitcher
came up and she won that by six. Then they
put her in against the boys in the Whitney pat
David Ruder that day in the Whitney and she beat
(01:48:59):
the boy. I'm trying to see who she beats in
the the Nswell and Fuzzy. Next day they put her in.
Next race was in the Isla and the great Ones,
who went third, the Ruard and Precisions. Then she came
(01:49:19):
back in the Woodwind and ran second to precision. Us
put her in the mask At and she won beating Steeler,
kissing it Deer one by seven. She won a Great
one Ruffian Boy eight during the bell Name led all
(01:49:43):
the way and one man. And then in her last
start of the year, she wanted the British of Distaff
beating the fans out and tied it outstanding. She went
four times as a as a five year first time
(01:50:03):
at something must have happened to her. She were in six,
got beat off pretty bad after taking the lead. Put
her back in Mama race allowance trace and she won.
Put her in the Malley, pitched her handicap Grade two
and she went second. And then last two races, last
(01:50:29):
three races, she won two of them under mccaren. Won
an allowance race under mcaren. They put her in an
allowance race and she bolted and that was her land.
If she was telling them that enough, she was and
(01:50:49):
then was retired twenty five wins. Good griefs if I
got a petty reel over there, Yeah, yeah, thank you
to do something. Yeah, I was kidning. I was looking
at your pa at the petty green. I don't believe
she ever had if she had a daughter that produced
(01:51:10):
the greatest steaks winners, but she never produced anything she
would better mister prospector Danji, mister prospect of shadow, slow
shaddle slud and she prouces a bunch of winners and
(01:51:30):
a couple of stakes producers, but that was all nothing
that lived up to her clast.
Speaker 1 (01:51:35):
Yeah, well, twenty five winters. My gosh, you'd have to
build up wing on your house for the trophies.
Speaker 2 (01:51:43):
That's right to most. What about that number of races
that you want to look at that look at to
some blister rations that you want. It's amazing, thanking Oldham
Are and Horse of the Year. Mm hmm. The two
yolks you want the Moccason and the Wavy Wave Steaks
(01:52:07):
and the three olces you won ten times, won the
Great one Belmont, bell Name and Grade one Ruffian and
the Grade one mask at, the Grade two Ballerinas and
Great two Road Stakes at Belmont, the Prima Donna Stakes
and the Oakland, the Bowl of Flowers of Belmont, the
Regret Handicap, the mysterious handicap at Baby Let's see, trying
(01:52:35):
to keep it here as the four year olks, you
want the British Cup this time, Margarita Invitationals, Whitney, the
Bell Name, the Ruffian, Lacania States, the Sugary Handicap, the
Masket and the Marti Pitcher. They hell Ensino handicap went
three times second, all the great ones fast second both
(01:52:58):
from grade one five years. She just ran the two
times only she had. The only thing she had was
a six a second and the Mally picture, And like
you asked him about that, Christ McCarron wrote her in
the last three rags and she bolted and like I
asked him about that? Yeah, yeah, I bet he remember that. Yeah.
(01:53:21):
I don't think he ever wrote her, she wrote her
in the last He wrote her in the last reception.
Speaker 1 (01:53:31):
I've told the story before, was it? But I worked
for doctor McGee.
Speaker 2 (01:53:38):
You sure you got the right man? Never mind, I
won't tell it again. I mean the right and you
got the right man. You do remember that? Oh that's okay,
what if I got it wrong? But that's what he
told me. But then mine, Oh no, not never man.
I just wondered if it was when he said that
(01:54:00):
the secretariat ever had. Okay, that's the best, mayor. Yes,
So what time is it? We're it that we are
not at the training.
Speaker 1 (01:54:13):
Center, but this is radio. We can say we're in
China as far as.
Speaker 2 (01:54:17):
That goes nowhere, no me either, But anyway, we.
Speaker 1 (01:54:22):
Are not at the training women, I should say we
are at the training center. How that and great place
to train, guarantee you they're on the track.
Speaker 2 (01:54:36):
Oh that's oh yeah, no doubt about that. Yeah. Great
people taking care of the track out there, Jim Pendergrass
and Dave and Harold. It's funny.
Speaker 1 (01:54:52):
One of the guys that worked at the training center
was one of the guys that came and he's an
em aim and gotcha and take you to the hospital
and the ambulance and he took a picture of selfie
of the two of you thumbs up you in the hospital,
and that wound up on the internet.
Speaker 2 (01:55:13):
Susy shirtlets put that. That's fun Yeah, it was yesterday
when Dave boy said, went to the hospital in it.
I had a kidney stone, yeah, which is gone, thank god.
Yes boy. Oh wow. Anyway, right at the training center.
(01:55:34):
Let's see, we've had some winners here. Tommy Short had
one at Mahoning Valley. The rest of these are a
turf way Scooter Hughes win one.
Speaker 1 (01:55:48):
Oh I saw that.
Speaker 2 (01:55:50):
Yeah, whenever Scooter wins one, his wife puts it up. No, okay,
John Nix one too. Yeah, he's Irish. Yeah boy, the yeah,
and and Ama had one and her last name is Mia.
At the age. Oh, I don't know. I don't know
(01:56:11):
that person. I don't know, but she wins races. Yeah,
this is not the first time, huh of call her.
I'm oh, I don't. I'm trying that. Somebody told me
something about it once, and I'm I'm sure i'd be
acurate about it and repeating it, so I won't. I mean,
(01:56:32):
it wasn't anything bad. Who who she was married to?
Right after? Yeah? Somebody? Maybe it's hert Maybe he's married
to somebody. Oh, how much time I got left down there? Yeah?
(01:56:52):
A manage or two, manyte or two. Well, anyway we
can talk about the turning center a little bit of that.
Who with winning the races down there? Yeah? You know
they've got everything in there to get your horse to
the races, to get starting gate. You know, two tracks,
(01:57:12):
two tracks, grass gallops. They've got a clocker. You know
they can you got em an e M s uh.
You got grass gallops besides the two tracks. Nice barns.
Barns are good now, yeah, and nice people and you
(01:57:32):
get it and runs the places a great guys. He's
been around, he's been to how many years he been
out there there? Lord, I don't know. I'm tim. I'm
telling you he's in Targan taking care of the tracks
at the training center and so you know, damn well
(01:57:53):
he knows what he's doing. Yeah. I was a clocker
out there for ten years at the Safe Track. Very
very Gellman, so full of day.
Speaker 1 (01:58:05):
Okay, I hear Roy and Dale Gallas.
Speaker 3 (01:58:12):
Until we meet again.
Speaker 2 (01:58:17):
Happy pray to keeps.
Speaker 3 (01:58:25):
Till men who cares about the clouds when we're to
getther Low's nose. How to help make your sup
