Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is the Home of the Wildcats. Six point thirty
WLAP Welcome Back, Stockyards Bank, Sunday One and Sports Talk.
I am Anthony White, along with Van Howes and DJ
producer Bo Robinson. We were before we went to break.
We were talking about our coaches, some of the loyalty
to our coaches, I think, the climate and the culture
(00:23):
of UK Athletics, and the some of the stresses that
are going on with our football team. Softball season has
officially started and our softball coach had media day and
she got emotional while making comments. I know I did
a pretty maybe pretty bad job of paraphrasing. So you
(00:45):
get a clear review or get a clear understanding of
how the conversation went.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
I'll play a clip.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Poor job coaching and like past the COVID era and
the reason I think I've done.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
A bad job. Sorry, I hate im.
Speaker 5 (01:13):
I know I suck.
Speaker 6 (01:14):
Right, It's really hard to be loyal in today's day
and age.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
So in my attempt to stay loyal to the people
I recruited, I took the team took a step back.
Speaker 6 (01:44):
I'm no longer going to be that girl, so.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
I had to change.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
So with that said, I had to figure out number one,
that my loyalty is to the Big Blue Nation. My
loyalty is to the University of Kentucky, and I have
to make sure that I set the standards at this level,
and any player who wants to live up to that
standard is great. But there were players that I was
allowing to live under the standard. They were being entirely
(02:16):
too selfish. And last year you really saw it come
to head because I tried to make it mix and
I couldn't. So I had young, really talented players who
are bigger, stronger, faster, who probably should have been in
the lineup all the time. And then I had the
older players that I was trying to be loyal to
(02:37):
and it just wasn't working. And to be honest with you,
nobody understands the deeply flex rule, so the older players
just thought I was messing with them the entire time,
where in softball you have a little more flexibility to
be a little more creative. In my attempt to be
creative and to make it all work, to be loyal
at the same time as to try to grow the
program and keep up with the super teams, I did
(02:58):
a really bad job, Okay.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
And that is kind of where I think a lot
of people think that Mark Mark Stoops may have been
at Like I said, I do know Nick ben Jel
and some point last year, I think before we had
him on the show or after he had him on
the show, he had got emotion at the press conference
for those reasons, Van Hiles, I do. We We're just
(03:24):
discussing going into break and Dennis kind of feels that
this was directly related to football if you are those
senior players though, Van, Now, now I'm kind of I
had some chance to think of think about it over
the break. Now I'm kind of like, if you are
those senior players, or you as a parent of a
single of the senior players are, do you feel some
(03:47):
type of way or do you or do you kind
of like, dang, my bad coach, or do you feel
like what the heck?
Speaker 7 (03:55):
Well, hey, if the shoe fits, you have to wear
it right. If you know anfter we all well, I
shouldn't say that we are cut from probably different clause
from the kids now, but you knew when you was
given it your all.
Speaker 5 (04:13):
And when you were not. You knew when you.
Speaker 7 (04:15):
Were laser focus and dedicated to the process more than
some other players were.
Speaker 5 (04:22):
We all know that.
Speaker 7 (04:23):
So I think inside that those seniors know and that
they might have left something on the table before they
left UK. Now, are they gonna be honest with themselves?
Speaker 5 (04:36):
Maybe not. Are they giving their parents their side of
the story? Probably so.
Speaker 7 (04:42):
But deep down inside, when you get to our age,
you're gonna look back on and say, Man, at twenty
twenty four, Steed, I wish I would have got more
VP practice. I wish I would have done this. I
wish it would have took more ground balls. But in
a moment, some kids can fool themselves. But we all
know at the end of the day as athletes, did
(05:03):
we really give it what we were supposed to and
what we were asked to do. So the answer question
could be I'm not sure.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
Are the are Do you think these are conversations? Cod
Do you think Coach Lawson had an exit conversation with
the seniors about this or do you think since it
was the last conversation you know they were graduating, it's
not a conversation. I say that because I know a
lot of people who watched our football team last year
felt like which we talked about before going to break.
(05:35):
Does does Mark Stoop say, or does Bush handed Does
he say, well, I can't run these plays with this
player on the field, so I can't keep them on
the field. Or do you think he feels exactly like
she feels.
Speaker 7 (05:50):
If it's probably a little bit of both, And I
think I know people are gonna you know, on the
social media people are not very happy with Bush. But
we also have stayed on the locker Wednesdays not be
a Mason standard time. How important the players are. And
sometimes we in the week and you want to run
(06:13):
the East ten plays, but the players can't execute it.
Speaker 5 (06:15):
You can't you can't run on Saturdays.
Speaker 7 (06:18):
So Bush is probably I'm not sure, but we doing
the scenario hypothetical.
Speaker 5 (06:22):
Bush. Look, man, we need new players because they look
they making me look bad. They are shrinking my.
Speaker 7 (06:29):
Playbook down to like four plays because we can't execute
just the basics. So we need to get rid of
these guys and get some guys who are really were
our guess high i Q football players, so we can
use the playbook and game plan better during the week,
because I don't want to run this to to take
advantage of the weakness of sothern's defense, but my players
(06:51):
just can't do it, So we need to do something
differently next year because this is just not working the
way it's working right now.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Do you think she's open to playbook for other coaches
because I can't say for a fact, but I do believe,
and I've been faking this for the last couple of months.
I do believe that Mark Stupts has had these conversations
with a lot of players. Is why a lot of
players didn't return. Now, maybe maybe it wasn't outright publicly,
but I'm almost certain that he's having these conversations. But
(07:20):
now that now Rachel's done it, and like I said,
I can't remember what Nick min Jjoneses conversation was along
those terms, but he knows he was having a lot
of stress and I think it was turning into health
issues and I don't know if it was trying to
pease everybody, but I just kind of, like Dennis said,
I just kind of feel like I like the fact
that she said it openly.
Speaker 5 (07:42):
Whatever.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
I don't know if I completely agree with you that
if you knew you were if you knew you weren't
doing your job, you deserve the shoe fits. Where is
it to comment, but I football wise as me, and
you said it's tougher. You know, you're more accountable for
other people's safety. For one part, if you're not giving
one hundred percent of football and you're not doing right things,
you know you can get somebody hurt. But there were
(08:03):
some guys I feel like we're just smiling going through
the motions knowing that they were gonna get the nil,
knowing they were gonna get a certain amount of plays.
No matter how what the what the outcome of the
game is right, and that's not fair to the Uh,
that's not fair to your teammates or your coaches or
Big Blue Nation because she did stay all those things.
Speaker 7 (08:21):
For sure, because it all rolls downhill. I mean, that's
the That's the one thing that you find out when
you go to college is that these coaches career is
resting on us.
Speaker 5 (08:34):
It's solely on us.
Speaker 7 (08:36):
Because if you're coaching the college, I'm not gonna say
every coach, but the basket majority of coaches the coach, right.
So now it's up to you guys on Saturdays to execute.
And if you don't execute, they're no longer within the institution.
Speaker 5 (08:51):
They don't have a job.
Speaker 7 (08:52):
And now they gotta go home and tell their wives.
Speaker 5 (08:54):
Look, we gotta we gotta move.
Speaker 7 (08:56):
At because these stay doing what they're supposed to do.
So it is it's tough with being a player knowing that,
but that's your job.
Speaker 5 (09:05):
Though. When you get to college.
Speaker 7 (09:06):
And and you're making nil right now, that's your job.
When we played, it was just get that education.
Speaker 5 (09:12):
Now you are making bank. Now it's your job.
Speaker 7 (09:14):
And some guys can't handle that extra responsibility, and you know,
the the brat comes out and they're like, I need more,
I need more, I need more if you want me
to play better, which is kind of the downfall the
whole nil pay for play thing, because now players are
starting to ask for more money because they're playing better
or or or they're requesting things that shouldn't have been
(09:35):
shouldn't be requesting. That's not I guess the nature of
the nil but that's what it's turned into.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
We'll ask you before we go to break, I'll ask
you this, Mark Stoops. I guess Big Blue Nation and
I think the SEC standings kind of spoke to Mark
Stoops so he had to recommit itself. Do you think
do you think possibly maybe Barnhard had a conversation with
the head softball coach. Maybe that led to this like, look,
(10:03):
because that's because you're exactly right, like they're responsible for
your family's livelihood. And if many like you said, if
you're not putting in the work, and my boss is
telling me like, look, we're gonna have your own review
of this next season, we may no longer need your services.
And that's one way. Hey, look now, now you absolutely
got to tell your players, look, it's either me or you,
(10:25):
is my kids or you. So you think there was
a conversation, had that led to that or something that
was eating her up? I just thought about that aspect, and.
Speaker 7 (10:34):
With coach Lawson, I don't think so, because they still
had a good season. They still made it at least
to the tournament. Now with coach Stoups then had a conversation,
it might have been adding him more than with coach
Lawson because the product that was calling the field last
year football was awful and it go four and eight
was downright awful. So I would I was trying to
(10:55):
say switch that statement to coach Stoops. I think all
hard As had a third conversation with Stoops and maybe
acknowledge and maybe made him acknowledge the difference that he
has done with the program since when they first started,
and maybe that's the reason that Stupe says kind of
turned the page and let some of these guys go
(11:16):
that were locker room issues.
Speaker 5 (11:19):
As we have talked about, that.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Is true, that is Van Howes. We're going to continue
this conversation. And also the nineteen seventy five teen was
reunited and I think the Blues Brothers were there. I
think they were there, the Witnesses, I think even think
DJ Bow was there. So we're going to talk a
little bit about that as well when we come back.
You're listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Wanning Sports Talk on news
Radio six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
This is the home of the Wildcats. Six thirty WLAP.
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Waning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony
White along with Van Holes and bol Robinson. Stockyard Bank
is your trusted partner, says nineteen oh four. So head
on over to syb dot com for all your banking
(12:02):
and financial needs. The Big Ass Fans Hotline has been
busy today as it is right now. If you'd like
to join eight five nine to eight zero two to
eight seven. That is eight five, nine to eight zero cats,
Let's see what Dennis has to say. Good morning, Dennis,
what do you got for us?
Speaker 5 (12:18):
Hey, good morning.
Speaker 8 (12:18):
How's everybody on this fine Kentucky Sunday morning.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
We're doing good. We're back on the right side of
the wind column.
Speaker 8 (12:25):
That's right, you're on the other side of the henhouse. Now,
what we saw, at least what I saw yesterday, was
five players out there playing as one. And the reason
why you had a point guard that was directing traffic,
directing plays, finding the open man, and it became a
(12:46):
lot easier if you notice that. And also you're seeing.
Speaker 9 (12:50):
Amari Williams now playing with a more this way that
we want to see.
Speaker 5 (13:01):
Yes, did we lose it? Well?
Speaker 2 (13:08):
I guess I understand the point he was getting to.
And I think there's no doubt that Lamont Butler's absence
made things tough. And I guess Jackson Robinson's transition to
the point guard or point guard by committee with Travis
Perry made things a little tougher. So the hopefully his
(13:29):
point was with Lamont Butler being back, you know, we're
gonna get back to our ways. So when the volunteers
come to town, we should look like we look prior
to his injury or him being out, because I think
he's still gonna be injured. I just questioned if something
gonna re aggravate the injury and we have to we
(13:49):
have to go time without him later in the season,
closer to March, when we need to be coming together
jailing and you know, fine tuning Van Howes. You you
were the one who said that you thought the point
guard was more important than Patrick Mahomes in this instance,
and I think that's where Dennis was going with that conversation.
Speaker 7 (14:08):
Yeah, it's just it's difficult because there's only five players.
Speaker 5 (14:13):
And here's here's the thing that I heard.
Speaker 7 (14:15):
People say too, that well we we won games without them. Yeah,
it's like when I Blue, our running back got hurt,
so I had to move from cornerback to running back.
I could play it for two games, but you put
me there for ten games.
Speaker 5 (14:29):
Now.
Speaker 7 (14:30):
I wasn't built for that, you know, So yes, can
you get by. Can a guy have a career game
one of those games? But if you got to live
without Butler for an extended period of time, it's gonna
show what it showed for us.
Speaker 5 (14:43):
And we lost those last two games.
Speaker 7 (14:44):
Too farcus on no miss, I think to discredit that
his value on his team is is it seeing how
how how he affects the game and how he puts
everybody in their right role, in the role, not the
right role, the role that you're comfortable with. And I
think him coming back it affects It affects the sub pattern,
(15:07):
It affects the Moraley team, and he is one of
those guys who can affect the play and it can
get the fans involved in the game because here a
hounder on the ball, so all that, I think having
him back, even at eighty percent, is much better than
not having them back at all.
Speaker 10 (15:23):
I think it's affecting our coach too, because Mark Pope
said that he couldn't sleep the other night. He woke
up in a full sweat thinking about Lamart Butler not
being back with this team and not being available. And
it kind of goes into a point that I wanted
to bring out. A couple of weeks ago, we talked
about Mark Pope not having enough motion. When's he going
(15:44):
to get a technical? Is he going to kind of
pick and chase, when he's going to get fired up.
He's getting a little feisty these days.
Speaker 2 (15:50):
Yeah, I think the fans may have gotten to him.
Like you said, I think he's frustrated. You got to
think the fans point for Mari Williams. You got your
big man bringing the ball up to court, so you
you going pretty much coast to code. You got to
you bring the ball to the court with your hounding
the heck out of him. And he's done a good
job as a as a I guess point guard you
want to say, or bringing the ball up the court,
(16:11):
but then he has to go on the blox and play.
Then he has to run all on the other end
of the court and play in the blocks. So I
do think Lamont Butler makes everything easier for uh Mark Pope,
But I don't not sleeping part. It is kind of funny,
but that does tell me that Lamont must have something.
When Van is saying eighty percent that if he's worried
(16:32):
about him not being available, it has to be a
lot worse than we think, uh Van or he would.
Why would you be worried about him not being there?
Speaker 7 (16:40):
I mean, if man, I don't think people understand how
much of a contact sport basketball is. It's not a
collisious sport like football, but that's a lot of contact.
Speaker 5 (16:50):
And if he's he has a bumped shoulder, is on
the shooting shoulder. That says on the shooting.
Speaker 7 (16:54):
Shoulder, Now, how can you raise up to take a
shot enough?
Speaker 5 (16:58):
Enough? I'm an opponent.
Speaker 7 (17:00):
Now I'm going to force you to shoot because now
I know that you have an ailment that is going
to prevent you from shooting your best. So it all
works hand in hand. I just hope that we're able
to I guess what's the word, get by until he
gets as healthy as he gets as he can, because
he's not going to get a hundred percent ever, because
no one is one hundred percent.
Speaker 5 (17:21):
But let's give him to a point where.
Speaker 7 (17:22):
He can stand some of this contact and then I
have to go, as you said, in and out of
a game or a miss a couple of games later
on when it's very important in March.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
Both since you're the most passionate as far as fans
on this panel say, you're the most passionate. And we
talked about Read Shepherd, some of the things that happen
with Read Shepherd and loyalty as a fan, and you know, kid,
being how young got decisions you make. What do you
take about the garrison technical that he got? And I
don't know how this has made his way into I
(17:54):
can understand a little bit how the gun thing has
made his way into the sports arena period, and for
that to happen at the University of Kentucky, it's kind
of it kind of threw me off, like we don't
do things like that.
Speaker 5 (18:06):
You know.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
That's some things you may see. Louisville players do work
Tennessee players, you know what I mean, Just some teas
that are not used to win it. As a fan,
I'm not van bo as a as a fan, as
a passionate fan, did that bother.
Speaker 7 (18:19):
You at all?
Speaker 10 (18:20):
Once I figured out what he did, because I didn't
see it at first, and Mark Pope pulled him off
to the sidelines and gave him a pretty good talking to.
Somebody sitting next to me, I said, what did he
do to get the technical? And he told me, well,
he kind of put his hand in the shape of
a gun, went bang bang, And I thought, ooh, you
can't do that. You're going to get caught doing that.
(18:41):
I don't know, I don't know if I can defend
a young mentality on that I didn't think it was right.
You are correct, University of Kentucky. I think you should
have known a little bit better because Anthony, you know
this from working with young people. It's always the second
reaction that it's going to get caught. Absolutely, if somebody's
(19:01):
picking on somebody, it's going to be that second person
who is going to get caught and they're going to
get trouble. Brandon Garrison if it is a learning lesson
for him not to do it again, and it saves
us from another technical down the road, let's say in
the tournament. Okay, lesson learned life lesson, But I just
didn't think it was very good at all.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
And I'm with you. It looks like Pope addressed it,
so hopefully that was a message to the rest of it.
Speaker 10 (19:27):
Now my question is for you, have you seen this
in college of basketball recently, because I have not.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
I've seen him more in high school, okay and au
and those type of things, But no I have it,
And like I said, I think Pope handled it. So
I think we will not see that in the future,
but we will be back after this. You listening to
Stockyards Bank Sunday when a sports talk on news radio
six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
This is the home of the Wildcats, six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank. Sunday when is Sports Talk? I'm
Anthony White along with Van House and Bo Robinson. This
hour Sunday when of Sports Talk is brought to you
by Country Boy Brewing, Van and the Boat. Yesterday there
were all kinds of festivities going on at Repperina and
(20:15):
the Blues Brothers were there. Nineteen seventy five team was
reunited and honored. How did that go?
Speaker 5 (20:23):
Bo?
Speaker 10 (20:24):
Very well? The fiftieth anniversary of the nineteen seventy five
national runners up, and it was good to see all
these guys come back. And that was a hell of
a team back in seventy five. Now that was two
years before I was born, So everything that I'm telling
you is just based on my research and conversation. But
(20:46):
that was the infamous team that played UCLA in the
championship game in nineteen seventy five out in San Diego.
And do you know what was significant about that game?
Anthony and Van I'm going to fer, but I know
you know that was John Wooden's last game, so some
(21:07):
historical significance behind it. But if you talk to fans
about this basketball team and why they are so endeared
in the hearts of the Big Blue Nation, it is
one particular game in nineteen seventy five that did it
for the fans. You guys want to take a guess.
The final four run was great, go ahead man.
Speaker 5 (21:30):
They beat John Caliberry.
Speaker 10 (21:32):
No no, oh, you're you're close and saying an adversary
of Kentucky. They ruined Bobby Knights, Indiana's perfect season up
in Dayton in the Mid East Regional Final ninety two
(21:53):
to ninety And from everything I've ever read about that game,
what I've heard about, it was a physical, physical game
between Kentucky and Indiana. And I found I believe I
found the game or a partial game with footage synced
up with Kaywood Lefford's call, and was uploaded on YouTube
about a year ago. And I'm gonna go back and
(22:14):
watch that later on tonight. But the Kentucky fans take
so much pride in this seventy five team ruining Indiana's
perfect basketball season. It was awesome to see the seventy
five team back at rupp Aerna being honored for their
fiftieth anniversary Jerry Hale was there, Jack Goose Gibbons, obviously
he would have been there, Jimmy dan Connor, Bob Guyett,
(22:37):
assistant coach at Dicky Parsons. Kevin Greevy was not there.
He tore his acl from what I heard, and so
he facetimed in, and I believe I think it was
Jerry Hale that held up his phone and Kevin Greevy
was on the phone right in the middle of rapp Aerreena.
The first time I'd ever seen something like that. I
thought that was kind of cool, even though Kevin Greevy
(22:58):
would have been great to have him here because he
was sharpshooter back in the day. Reggie Wharfford's family, the
late Reggie Warford who passed away a few years ago.
He was represented by his family. Mary Haskins was there.
So a really really great reunion. They got a great
reception and just a fun day all the way around,
getting the Cats back in the wind column and seeing
the seventy five team back on the court.
Speaker 2 (23:20):
Did they have local festivities tied to No, they died
to the celebration. Just recognition at.
Speaker 10 (23:26):
The game, Just recognition at the game. I think they
had like a reception the night before, and then Jimmy
dan Connor addressed the rapp Arena crowd yesterday.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
And the FaceTime was on the phone or did they
get in on the jumble tree.
Speaker 10 (23:39):
It was on the phone, but the camera zoomed in
on the big screen.
Speaker 2 (23:43):
Yeah, that is neat man.
Speaker 10 (23:45):
But that seventy five Indiana game and the NCAA tournament,
that was the game where coach Joeb Hall's pregame speech.
He went up to the blackboard and he wrote four
words on that board nets bus, police, Coliseum and he said,
(24:05):
we're going to cut the nets down. You saysors, don't
use a knife. We need all your fingers for the
front of four. I don't need any injuries. And we're
going to get on the bus. We're going to have
a police escort from the Ohio River down to the coliseum,
and we're going to celebrate. Now, Joe By, I think
the way Joe B tells this, and I've heard different
(24:26):
stories that the word police was not on the blackboard,
and then Joe B. I've heard it from him. I've
read it in a couple of books too by Russell Rice,
that police and state police was on the chalkboard, and
word got back to Cawood Ledford and he told Joe
being he said, I'll make sure you get a police
escort back down to Lexington. And so the police escorted
(24:48):
the Kentucky caravan down seventy five to the coliseum.
Speaker 2 (24:52):
Was that just routine or was there a certain I
know we have escorts all the time.
Speaker 10 (24:57):
Well, if you beat Indiana, ruined their perfect season, wuldn't
you a police that score too?
Speaker 5 (25:01):
I would, I.
Speaker 2 (25:02):
Guess, Matt I didn't. I didn't know things got that
hostel back then.
Speaker 10 (25:06):
Go back and watch that game on YouTube.
Speaker 2 (25:08):
I am going to have to check some of that
because Joe b Prior to.
Speaker 10 (25:11):
That game, he kicked people out of the arena who
had any association with Bobby Knight and Indiana dang kicked
him out of the arena and he was telling Rick
Roby and Mike Phillips, I want you to pancake the
Indiana players. We're gonna flatten him down.
Speaker 2 (25:31):
Which that is Joby Hall must have become a nicer
guy in his old age. At his older age, and
when I met him, he's always been kind and thoughtful.
And does his hate or does their relationship stem from
anything personal.
Speaker 10 (25:46):
Earlier that season seventy four to seventy five, Kentucky had
played Indiana. They had went to Bloomington, and that's when
Bobby Knight hit Joeby Hall in the back of the head.
Speaker 7 (25:57):
Oh oh, don't know of no whoa whoa, whoa whoa
he struck him or the ball he was trying to
pass to one of his players.
Speaker 10 (26:10):
Know it was It was contact. It was physical contact.
Speaker 2 (26:16):
What why am I just why am I just not
hearing about this? I wasn't born, neither were you. Van
had been the only one born.
Speaker 10 (26:24):
And I think the I think the story goes. Indiana
was up and Joby said something to the effect of Bobby,
are you really going to leave your starters in at
this point, and Bobby Knight lashed out at him and
don't tell me how to coach, and then later on
in the game he smacked him upside the head. However,
the assistant coach at the time was a former CIA
(26:48):
or FBI agent Lyn Nance, and he was about ready
to go toe to toe in honor of joe By Hall.
He was defending Joe Hall's honor and he was about
ready to go after Bob Knight. There's a great picture
I tweeted that out the other day of lean Nance
going after Bobby Knight.
Speaker 2 (27:04):
Wow, I didn't know that.
Speaker 10 (27:07):
That's up there with the who was that do one
after Caliperry, John Jenney Temple.
Speaker 2 (27:13):
Yep, Yep, that's up there with that. I remember that.
I thought those things got physical, but I didn't. I
never knew about the joeby Hall situation.
Speaker 10 (27:19):
Yeah, and Joe would say about Bobby Knight that if
you're out fishing, if you're out hunting, I don't know
if I'd want to go hunting with Bobby Knight, but
if you are with him one on one, he's your
best friend. But just to get a little uprise out
of you in front of a crowd, he always felt
like he had to perform wow and get the best
of you. See story time with Bow before we before
(27:43):
hang on before before you switch topics at BO Big Blue.
There is a ton of podcast with the seventy five
team with the late Regie Warford Outstanding podcast. Oscar and
I recorded that, uh not too long before he passed away.
Jerry Hall, Kevin Greevy, Kevin Greevy, the aftermath of that
UCLA game the National Championship game. Kevin Greevy tried to
(28:06):
get the last word on John Wooden. I won't ruin it,
but it's a fun story to listen to, and how
John Wooden responded to Kevin Greevy podcast with Jack Gibbons
and Larry Johnson too had a little Western Kentucky connection.
Maryon Haskins Larry Johnson on that team. So at Bow
Big Blue on twitters where I tweeted out all the
links to the podcast with Oscar.
Speaker 2 (28:26):
Great listeners going to check those out. But I was
not really switching topics because when we come back after
the break, I want to get some Super Bowl insight
from Van Howes because Bo made me feel terrible earlier
about Canard being on the other team. Now, but he's
going to end a three peete. I like history, but
also like UK players, I want him to win, but
(28:47):
also UK history Van Howes and Bow Robinson. Leonard Hamilton
is going to retire. And I told you this several
years ago, Van Howes, that this stuff sports was going
to be chained, and now you got legends walking away
from the game. Seventy six years old. Is it's pretty old,
But I don't know if it's really old for coaching,
(29:08):
but having to deal with the stuff that people have.
We talked up already talked about Rachel Last and Nick
ban Jone. We know what's on the table for Mark Stoops.
Are you concerned about just sports in general? After Leonard
Hamilton said that he's at Florida State, he's he's retiring
at the conclusion of this season, Hey.
Speaker 10 (29:25):
Who is an assistant on that seventy four to seventy
five team.
Speaker 2 (29:28):
That's why I thought you were going to see. I
was throwing you, throwing you at Ali you man, I
was teeing it up for you.
Speaker 10 (29:36):
I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (29:39):
Van House, Are you worried, baby? Are you worried about
the history? All these great coaches are retiring all of
a sudden. It could It may have nothing to do
with NIL, but I do think it has something to
do with the climate and the culture of just college sports.
Speaker 5 (29:53):
Now.
Speaker 7 (29:55):
Yeah, it's a culmination of NL and the modern day athlete.
Speaker 5 (30:00):
The NIL just was a chair on top. I think
some of these guys are kind of.
Speaker 7 (30:04):
On that fence of heading out anyway because of the
nature of sports. But then now add on top of
that the money. Yeah, I think it definitely is affected
some of these guys.
Speaker 2 (30:15):
And for sure, yeah, because now it's not only about
coaching and not I think that's terrible. It's not about
really about coaching, it's not really about the players playing anymore.
It's just like transactional at this point. So like, what's
the point if you know you can buy a championship
or you got to make these kids. Like you said,
Bush Hampton, I don't know how good of a coach is,
don't know how good of a quarterback Brock vandergriff is,
(30:36):
because there's some people not pulling the rope. There's some
people not putting forth to effort. There's some people not
putting forth to preparation because if you yell at them,
they'll leave the school and go somewhere else. But it
is still Super Bowl Sunday. We haven't talked enough about
Super Bowl. We've only talked about Puppy Bowl, which we're
looking forward to that and a couple two hours and
(30:57):
fifteen minutes from now. You can watch Puppy Bowl. But
we're gonna get Van's gonna get Van's taken on Super
Bowl when we come back. We'll be back after this.
You're listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday morning sports talk on
News Radio six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 1 (31:09):
This is the home of the Wildcats, six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday when the sports talk. I'm
Anthony White along with Van Howes and Bo Robinson on
this Super Bowl Sunday, Super Bowl fifty nine Philadelphia Eagles
and Darren Kinnard against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
All the festivities start at six point thirty and you
(31:36):
got Kendrick Lamar. Well, festivity is going off before they've
got Kendrick Lamar performing at halftime, which has been all
over media and why I don't know. Now that I
know people love the halftime show, but now all the
scuttle but prior to the halftime show is I'm not
very entertaining. But we talked about it before you came on.
(31:56):
Van Housen. Jack Pilgrim does not want as the City
Chiefs to win because he does not want Tom Brady's
legacy being marred or tamper with because he's a New
England Patriots Tom Brady fan, so he doesn't want any
of that bothered. But I really like Patrick Mahomes, and
I want Patrick Mahomes to win because I want him
(32:17):
to the race all the Brady love because I think
some of it pseudo. And they did not win all
their super Bowls fairly or the correct way, or did
not make it to the super Bowl. And I'll also
go on to say this before I'll let you comment
on that, there's been a lot of times that Tom
Brady was not the reason they won the super Bowl.
(32:39):
He didn't hurt him. Now, he has played great in
some of them, but there's some that the defense carried him.
And I don't know if this year Patrick Mahomes may
have that luxury. But that was just another thing. Tom
Brady gets a whole lot of credit for the games
that they the super Bowls, and some of them, I'm
not certain that he should get as much credit as
he did does.
Speaker 5 (32:59):
Yeah, a lot of a lot of this for me
on this one.
Speaker 7 (33:03):
First of all, when I was doing my quarterback rankings,
I had Mahomes as my number one rated quarterback come
out of college, which I was one of a few.
Second of all, I don't think you can it's gonna
be some people are gonna be It's gonna be hard
for Mahomes to surpass Brady because of this fact, at
this point, the only person who has beat beating them
(33:27):
uh at Mahomes is Tom Brady. He beat them in
the AFC Championship and he beat him in the Super Bowl,
so those he's the only person who has ever beat
him in these high profile games.
Speaker 5 (33:39):
So it's kind of like, can you guys who beat you?
Speaker 7 (33:43):
And he was like, I don't know, but that's a
that's that's a discussion for others. I want the Chiefs
to win because I'm a big Andy Reid fan. Like
I said earlier, I'm a big At Mahomes fan. I
like to see history and I want to see the
first Street peat in NFL history, and I would like
to see Andy Reid be the one who hoists that
(34:05):
trophy up.
Speaker 2 (34:07):
So using your logic, So using your logic, Eli Manning
is better quarterback than than Tom Brady, those.
Speaker 7 (34:15):
Two games are gonna get Eli Manning in the Hall
of Fame. He's not better than Tom Brady. But if
he didn't, if he doesn't win those two super Bowls
and beat the quote unquote, everybody's goat not my goal
because Joe Montown is my goal. If he doesn't beat
Tom Brady Super Bowl, Eli Manning doesn't have the career
that's that is word of being the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 2 (34:38):
Do you think he's gonna how many ballots? How many
years you think it's gonna take? You think next one
around her? He think he's been one of those really
late when you don't have enough, you don't have enough
people to put it in there. No, it's not gonna
go that late. But he's gonna have to weigh at
least a couple of rounds. And my estimate, I don't
(34:59):
know if that's how it's going a run, But the
guy had a pretty good career.
Speaker 7 (35:03):
His passing yards up there in top probably ten. He's
played a long time. He won two super Bowls. If
how many quarterbacks in NFL has won two Super Bowls,
he's won a few.
Speaker 5 (35:14):
So because of that, he's gonna get in. I don't
know when. I don't think it's gonna be the next
to us, probably be the third one.
Speaker 2 (35:22):
And do you think there's gonna be a lot of
points scored in this game?
Speaker 5 (35:24):
Who? Who? Do?
Speaker 2 (35:25):
Who said thirty? The calling we had earlier said he
thought the score is gonna be thirty eight to thirty five.
I'm like, Wow, I don't do I don't think that
many pots are gonna be scored eight. I can definitely
see high twenties. Over fifty point total.
Speaker 7 (35:43):
Man, Wow, I'm thinking right, Yes, I'm gonna say over
fifty twenty eight, twenty four, but that's fifty two, So
I'm gonna go.
Speaker 2 (35:52):
Over fifty with Bo's been really interested in bow before
we get out of here, what you've really been interested in?
Who do you got to? Who do you have in
the puppy Bowl?
Speaker 5 (35:59):
Bo?
Speaker 10 (36:00):
Who do I have in the puppy Bowl? I'm going
with Team Ruff by two two? What's what do you like?
Are they touchdowns? Are they just points? Are they Biggins?
It might be Biggins? Team Rough to win the Lombardi Trophy.
Speaker 2 (36:18):
And that's the team that has the Kentucky the Kentucky both.
Speaker 10 (36:22):
Dude team Team Roff and Team Fluff. I think Team
Ruff has Julip and Team Fluff has Colonel from the
Kentucky Humane Society.
Speaker 2 (36:31):
We've been talking about this that much. I don't even
know where you can view it at? Where do you
where can you view it?
Speaker 10 (36:36):
A and planet?
Speaker 5 (36:37):
Are you serious? Of course? Of course? Wow?
Speaker 10 (36:41):
May replay it all day.
Speaker 2 (36:42):
I'm glad to check it. I'm gonna check it out.
Speaker 10 (36:45):
Listen, you won't have a warm, fuzzy feeling watching it,
and you won't worry about a thing when you're watching
the Puppy Bowl. It's fun to watch it is, and
you watch it yearly. Yes, I used to watch it
with my dog.
Speaker 2 (36:56):
Wow, he's going, why are you.
Speaker 5 (36:59):
Laughing at that? Man?
Speaker 7 (37:00):
What are you laughing about? I was laughing that he
used to watch it with his dog. I didn't get
they used to that either. I apologize condolence. It's fine,
Oh bo geez.
Speaker 5 (37:12):
I didn't know that. But watching what your dog is is.
Speaker 10 (37:15):
Yeah. Most people watch keep it on and watch it
with their dogs.
Speaker 2 (37:19):
That's awesome because the dogs probably do understand what's going on,
just the same way we understand watching human move around.
I'm sure they probably understand how the dogs work around.
Speaker 5 (37:28):
I really think so.
Speaker 2 (37:30):
But who do you have for the Super Bowl? I
know you said Darian Cannard earlier, but I didn't know
if you were just pointing out Darien Cannard, you and
Tom Brady hater? Or who do you get in Super Bowl?
Speaker 10 (37:38):
You know, I don't even care anymore. I love how love,
I love how people are telling me how the fan
and this is the only time, you know, Kansas City
is going to make history and we got a three
peat going on, and people tell me I need to
enjoy all of this. I'm pulling for Philadelphia, but I
think Kansas City wins.
Speaker 2 (37:56):
I'm just going to watch it and have a good
time and just enjoy it. And I'm not rooting for
every team. I'm just gonna partake in the food and
the adult beverages and that'll be it. Thanks to Van Howes,
thanks to Jack Pilgrim, Thanks to Bo Robinson. I am
Anthony White, and this has been Sunday Morning Sports Talk
on news Radio six point thirty WLAB
