Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome back to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on
Anthony White along with Larry Vault Bo Robinson's coming to
you from Clark's Main Street Market studios in downtown Likes
to Kentucky. And now we're proud to be joined by
Chad we of UK gymnastics coach. Good morning.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
First of all, good morning, how are you going?
Speaker 1 (00:23):
We're doing pretty good? And I just realized we talked
to coach Garrison a little bit. We talk about his
and his wife being partners, and we talked to a
lot of that. How many coaches do you all have?
I didn't never thought of that.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Yeah, there's fourign staff. So we get Tim and Rachel
and then myself and then Anna who was an ex
UK gymnast as well.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
Do you all perform or do you all coach one position?
So since there's four and there's typically four routines, do
you all have a position or you just all work
together to put it together?
Speaker 2 (00:58):
We work together, but we are lead on certain events.
So I'm lead on floor, involved Tim's lead on bars,
and then Rachel's lead on beam and then and it's
helping with choreography and recruiting right now.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
And I guess talking about the girls, We've had quite
a few of them on that They've always been energetic.
It's always excitement, exciting time to come tomorrow to watch
you guys perform. How is it as a coach to
coach these these girls everything just seems so cheery. How
it is as a coach to be on the other
side of it preparing?
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Yeah, absolutely love it. I mean, these girls are the best.
They're just respectful, they love gymnastics, They're hardworking, and they're
just fun personalities to be around. So it makes our
jobs pretty easy. We get in there and they work
hard and we just kind of, you know, help push
them and try to get them to reach their limits.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
Yeah, I know.
Speaker 4 (01:56):
To the point with UK gymnastics are all are no
moral victories. And you didn't beat Oklahoma, the defending national champion,
the number one team in the country this year on
Friday night, but Delaney Rodriguez won the all around title.
Crestlin Brose was nearly perfect. I couldn't tell that. I
don't know why she didn't get a team Maybe you
(02:17):
can tell us it's nearly perfect on floor to win
that and your team outscored Oklahoma on floor exercise. So
I would have to think from a coaching standpoint, that's
the kind of progress you all have been looking for,
and maybe that could even though you didn't win, could
that be the meat that really kind of turns things around.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
For you all.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Yeah, yeah, we're very pleased. This is past weekend. You know,
it's we kind of got off this so I'll start
to see then. I really think this past week couldn't
be a catalyst to just keep moving us forward. Delaney
was a rock star out there, her career high in
the all around, and then of course Creston went out
there and just shine right on floor. Yeah, it was
(02:56):
a I think there's a stat I read she scored
nine niney plus out of twenty five out of twenty
eight routiness of her career. She just rock solid. But
I think overall, we put it together better this past weekend,
and I think it's really going to help with their
confidence moving forward.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
Yeah, and coach I Cresling being out being off a
little while Number four LSU last week this week passed
Oklahoma and you know number four in the country, number
one in the country. Is it still just kind of
like okay, okay, we got over the rough bumps you
got cresling back talking. Now things should look look a
(03:32):
lot brighter for you guys, or is it still kind
of like, Wow, we got, you know, some improvement to do.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Yeah, No, there's always work to do, right, We've kind
of got up our heads down and grind away. Take
each day in practice and try to get you know,
that one percent better each day. I really need to
get in the gym and execute a high level and
practice so that we can bring it out to the competition.
For It's a long season, right and as long as
we keep progressing week to week, will be where we
want to at the end.
Speaker 4 (04:01):
Chand who are a couple of the other gymnast hadn't
way an a flintation has really been good? I'll vault
for you. But who are a couple of the other
maybe performers that you're seeing this progress and you think
there's still a whole lot more to come, that we're
going to be maybe a couple more weeks thinking wow,
I wonder where that score came from at all. So
a couple that you see really getting ready to make
(04:23):
a big jump, do you think?
Speaker 5 (04:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (04:25):
I think Calli Gardner is one. She's a transferm from tousand.
I think each week she's got a little bit better,
super powerful on floor involved, Yeah, and she's getting better
and better each week. I think Ryan Noonan stepping up
and she's been out there pretty steady. And Taily Rizzo
has a ton of potential. Hasn't quite hit on awful
(04:46):
cylinders yet, but she'll get there.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
And going through this season, you guys have a tough schedule.
I know in the past you guys have tried to
host and we've been at some event you guys get
the host, Is that.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
A goal?
Speaker 1 (05:05):
I mean, obviously to win a championship is a goal,
but just to have as many opportunities at home and
our fans to get to see you guys come out.
Is that in preparation or is there any where you
guys have an impact on that or does that only
come from just winning meets?
Speaker 5 (05:19):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (05:19):
No, we love competing in front of our home fans right.
The energy they bring, the support they bring just means
the world to us and it has an impact on
our team. So we're excited we do get a host
Regionals this year, which is the first, first, second, and
third rounds of the NCAA tournament. That'll be out in April.
So we're excited to be able to start postseason in
(05:41):
front of our home fans.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
So you guys, so that's already determined. It has nothing
to do with the record. You just what goes into
the decision of becoming a host location.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Yeah, it's a big process. So university's bid for it
goes to the NCAA and they select for sites each
year to host general rounds. So we were fortunate enough
to be one of those hosts. And yeah, so it
doesn't guarantee us qualifying. The top thirty six teams make
it into the postseason, and.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
If you guys make it into the postseason, you would
this would definitely be your location, or is it or
there a possibility that even if you had a lower
seating you would have to go to another location.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
No, this will be our location. Okay, we will be
competing here, you know, and if everything goes as planned,
we know will qualify.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
So chair for folks that are listing and they look
at your record, say, well, they haven't won yet this year,
but that doesn't mean you still can't qualify in C
DOUBLEA because they take what's the top thirty six teams.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Yes, and that goes by your NQS, which is kind
of your average of your scores throughout the year. So
we're in a tough conference in the SEC, I can
shy away from that, so you know it's going to
be a battle each week to get that w. But
when they in gymnastics, when they're looking at the rankings,
it goes more by the scores you're receiving than the
(07:06):
win loss records.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
So how do you all kind of rank scoring wise?
Thanks to the right veil, so I looked at it,
it was pretty solid.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Yeah, I think our average score right now, we're I
think are around twenty ninth in the country. Yeah, you know,
I eventually we'll be able to drop a low score
here that we had at the beginning of the year,
and then you know, as we keep progressing and this
team keeps, you know, finding ways to improve, our average
(07:37):
will go up.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
And we talk to the young ladies and we, like
I said, we talked to Covid Garrison. Would you guys
only have one senior per year? It seems like you
guys just stay young, so every year you got the
same faces return and every year, so next year you're
going to be pretty pretty heavy on the senior side.
Is that something you guys look for or not saying
look forward to? But is it some of you guys
preparing because you've you have most of these girls at
(08:00):
least three years.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
Yeah, yeah, no, you know, we try to stay in
the moment and stay present with the team we have.
But yes, looking in the future, we just have one
senior this year, they'll be graduating, so pretty much our
whole team's coming back. Plus we got four freshmen that
will be joining that team that are strong, and it's
a very strong class, so you know, we should continue
to grow and be really good next year as well.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
I've got a listener that texts me a question. She
was only going a little bit better to her evaluation
of Gabby. Then is it freeing as I think you
pronounced her lifetime? I'm not positive about it, but yeah,
kind of tell me her progress at what you think
she can do for this team. Maybe they'll just this year,
but going forward.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
Yeah, you know, she has a ton of potential. She's
definitely she's out there the freshman competing three events for us.
I think it's I've been a little bit of adjustment
and kind of new atmosphere out there competing as a
team in front of these crowds. I think she's going
to settle in here in these next couple of weeks
and really shine on the floor bars and beam. You know,
(09:04):
she's looking really good in practice. She's improving each day,
so I think she's going to really be hitting some
high scores here in the next couple of weeks.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
And you talked and you talked about Delaney, who obviously
is I told just one of our favors was her
and Kresla have been so great about coming on with
us and doing different things. But what is there about
her that she's I mean, she won two all around
titles for first two years here. This season she's already
won three. What has made the difference for her to
be all just kind of take that step up like
(09:37):
what she has. Is there one particular event that's made
her better for it's a little bit of improvement in everything.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
I think she made a big upgrade to her vault
this year. She upgraded to your chenko one and a half.
This is a ten out start value now, so that's
really helping her all around total. But over all the girls, Yes,
steady man, she's calm, she's consistent in the gym, and
and she just goes out there and does the same thing.
She doesn't practice every day. It's fun to watch.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
And my last question, because we're big fan of krestling
and we're a big fan of all a lot of girls,
Kresling's just always you know, we've kind of got to
know her a little bit better. So if team doesn't
make postseason for some reasons, the team itself doesn't make postseas,
and crestling continues to stay in the nine nines and
you know tens, does she get to do How does
(10:27):
that operation work for as far as continuing to participate
and get to become a national champion or does the
team have to make it to that level for an
individual to continue to progress.
Speaker 2 (10:39):
No, no individuals can progress. So the start of the tournament,
the top thirty six teams make it into the postseason.
After that, then they select Off the top of my head,
I don't know exactly what it is. I think around
eight more individuals on each event that are the highest
ranked excluding the top thirty six teams, and then from there,
(11:01):
when postseason starts that first day, they take the top
event score makes it on the nationals.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
Gotcha as an individual, if that makes sense, absolutely, Larry, do.
Speaker 5 (11:16):
You have.
Speaker 4 (11:18):
The only thing I would add is, after watching Oklahoma
compete against you guys, it's gonna take somebody pretty special
to beat them this year. May they just they just crank? Man,
that's a higher out just like everybody just like it's
it's nothing. I mean, I don't know if they're that
good all the time, but my gosh, they sure look
good against you all.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
No, they're rock steady. I mean, they're the standard that
everyone's chasing and going after. They've been consistent for the
last ten years, so you know that's something we're chasing, right,
everyone in the country's chasing them.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
Well, it's a good luck catch you because then they
were impressive. They were fun to watch.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
Yeah, the coaching staff does a great job those girls
for sure.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Well, coach, we appreciate you for taking some time with
us this morning. Man.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
I hope you guys have a great week and some
of this snow clears up down here before you guys
head off to Auburn. But we'll wish you all the
best down there.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
Thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
Appreciate you guys, all right, we will be back after this.
You are listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk
on News Radio six thirty WLP.
Speaker 6 (12:22):
This is the home of the Wild Guts six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on Anthony
White along with Larry Vaught Bo Robinson. Arry Vaught a
pretty interesting interview. I did not realize that our gymnastics
team was struggling that bad. And we haven't had any
(12:49):
teams that have been on our show that most of
them has been extremely successful, not after I mean just
there's successful teams, but I can't realize we were all six.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
But it's just kind of I don't know.
Speaker 1 (13:04):
I don't know what to say because I'm used to
talking about all the highlights from people that have been
on our show and we've gotten to know personally.
Speaker 3 (13:09):
But they have a struggle bus well.
Speaker 4 (13:13):
I think every team that they have competed against was
ranked at the time.
Speaker 3 (13:17):
Arizona State competed Arizona.
Speaker 4 (13:19):
State, it was at the time, and that was the
match if you remember, the Kentucky just had the disaster
on beam for the six fail and that's a match.
I think if they I think if they compete fifty
times against Arizona State. Maybe I'd be wrong. I bet
they'd win forty seven. But they went from never having
a fall on beam to having four in a row.
(13:40):
I mean, it was unreal and that's why they lost
that one. And I think that's the score he was
talking about. When they get enough matches in that they
can drop that lowest score up to that area, then
they'll jump probably up to twentieth or something like that
in the total score. It's just they competed against number
four LSU, the twenty twenty four national champion, number one
(14:01):
LSU the twenty twenty five national champion, and that match
they opened the season with had three teams all ranked
in the top twenty. So the record's a little misleading.
But their point production is getting better and every week.
In this past week against Oklahoma, they were really good.
Just in every event Anthony Oklahoma, it seemed like, and
(14:22):
maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like Oklahoma's lowest score
was like nine to nine and almost every event, I
think maybe one, their lowest scoring all down like that
nine eighty to two five. But they were just cranking nine,
nine to higher out just on everything. They were just
like machines out there, they were incredible. I think they
went over one ninety eight and that's pretty darn impressive.
Speaker 1 (14:44):
Yeah, and we're staying around one ninety four. It looks
like and that just off in my mind. You like,
as you stated, it's been like all top twenty teams
that we've competed against. Maybe Arizona State may have been
a little lower, but it's all top twenty. Well, one
ninety four. It doesn't looked like a score that that's
gonna be repetitive.
Speaker 4 (15:03):
They were they were over in one ninety six this week,
aren't they.
Speaker 1 (15:07):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (15:07):
Yeah, correctly, I think there were one ninety six this week.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
But I'm saying prior to getting crestling back, it's been
one ninety four's.
Speaker 4 (15:15):
Yeah, against and against Arizona State, they really they really
struggle because of Beam right, like say than the and
then at that opening meet they didn't have Crestlin and
it's taken two pretty high scores out.
Speaker 3 (15:27):
Of the floor.
Speaker 4 (15:28):
I feel like nine nine on floors is automatic. I
don't know how she didn't get a ten. It sure
looks like I didn't see any flaw in it. Obviously,
what do I know? But she had to settle for
the nine nine five, but I would have sure thought
they couldn't have been A ten would have been pretty sweet.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
This scene again, and when we talk to him about
hosting and you say, people say bid, I know.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
What bidding means in different aspects? Uh what go?
Speaker 1 (15:51):
You know?
Speaker 3 (15:51):
It goes? I should have asked them, you know what
goes into that?
Speaker 1 (15:54):
Because I is it like our venue, because it's not
really our fans, Because if it's not our team competing,
then that doesn't really matter.
Speaker 4 (16:05):
I think to guarantee a certain amount of amenities and
things you're going to do, where you're going to house teams,
how you're going to take care of the meet, how
you're going to run the meat that that, that type thing.
It's a lot of logistics and there may be is
a slight fee you have to make sure that you
pay to be able to do that also. But they
only have four sites and then they go to the nationals,
(16:26):
so they can kind of move these around pretty good
in either the fortune the unfortunate thing, on which way
you want to look at it. But the first round
of the competition will be on Good Friday, and then
the final two rounds will be on Easter Sunday, huh,
that is interesting, but you've got to make sure you
get to that. That'll be a bucket last night. And
(16:48):
for me, I've never been to an NCAA gymnastics event
and I'm looking forward to going to my first one.
Speaker 1 (16:53):
I thought we went to n demo spent as a
women's NCAA tournament event that we went to last ask
about miss both then, I'm sorry, my apologies you if
you like to join the show eight five nine to
eight zero two two eight seven eight five nine to
eight zero cat, let's get to the phone line and
see what Alvin has to say. Good morning, Alvin, what
(17:13):
do you got for us?
Speaker 5 (17:15):
Hey, good morning guys. How y'all doing today? And I'm
glad that everybody was able to survive the ice storm
and able to get around and be a little bit
mobile on this beautiful day. I did want to make
some observations about this basketball team suddenly we all saw
last night that they did go down and you know,
(17:36):
beat Arkansas could have won that game by double digits.
I thought that coch coach Pope made a couple of
culture moves that was important, and then he went to
his own and that sort of confused the Uh, those
the Arkansas basketball playoffs. You know, I thought that was significant.
(17:58):
But the one thing that a good draw for this
team that it is, it's just that it's a team, uh,
that everyone is making contributions off the bench. It's not
no individuality. You know, you don't. You're not talking about
one player. You're talking about multiple players, which you know
as the definition of teams. One other thing that you know,
(18:19):
Mark Pope is not confronted with the one and done
and what about who's going to the pros?
Speaker 3 (18:25):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (18:26):
As this program has always been confronted with that ever
since John Wall came here with the one and done apparatus.
So Pope's not confronted with that. You don't have to
have the microphones in his face about that. The only
thing that he has to talk about, maybe a little
bit is JQ being injured. Uh, that's a that's a
(18:46):
weekly announcement.
Speaker 3 (18:48):
Larry Vault.
Speaker 5 (18:49):
When Sam Boyd was ended back in the day, how
to coach Joby Hall get that information out to the
inquiring minds that wanted to know if Big Boy was
gonna be ready to go the next game or how
his injury was going. How was that the injury news
translated back in the late seventies and early eighties.
Speaker 4 (19:13):
It was not translated best I remember, though, it became
clear pretty early that Sam was going to be out
for the year, and it seemed like Joe kind of
shared that with us. And then after that, the coaches
in any sport talked very little about injuries. They just
would wouldn't talk about it at all. So you just
were normally guessing, and you'd get to a game, I
(19:34):
miss someone like a spraying the ankle or something. You
didn't know what was going to go on with the
player or not go on. But kind of similar, Katy
Brooks is really not talks a lot about tianni Key.
Speaker 3 (19:43):
I mean he didn't.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
He hadn't said anything all week about really if she
would be back for sure or not. But in the
old days, you got no information.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
Will continue this conversation on the other side of the break,
you're listening to Stockyards Banks Sunday Morning Sports Talk on
news radio six thirty WLA.
Speaker 6 (20:00):
This is the home of the Wildcats, six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 1 (20:05):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on Anthony
White along with Larry Vault, Bo Robinson. This hour of
Sunday Morning Sports Talk has brought you by a country
Boy brewing. We were talking about injuries before we want
to break and Larry Van I did kind of want to,
I guess revisit the University of Kentucky men's basketball team.
You brought up injuries. We maybe think about what we
(20:28):
talked about with Jack before Jack got off and again
we did beat Arkansas eighty five to seventy seven at
their home.
Speaker 3 (20:38):
Jim Budd Walton areno or arena? Uh?
Speaker 1 (20:43):
This thing carrying on you We're expecting to see Tianni
today at two o'clock. Maybe we don't wait and see.
Speaker 4 (20:50):
But that's what I'm suspected.
Speaker 3 (20:53):
Yeah, so we don't. We don't know.
Speaker 1 (20:55):
But as Alvin kind of pointed out, and it kind
of really makes sense, we talked about the Jalen Lowe
injury and we were pretty correct. A couple of days following,
Jalen Lowe was deemed on the rack for the rest
of the season. But whatever's going on with Jayden Quainton's
at this point, the season's so far gone, why not
(21:20):
make a decision or if it is like the Jalen well,
he hasn't played quite a while, so he could, and
I don't know if a red shirt. I don't think
that's even in play for him. Apparently he's probably just
gonna go to the NBA either way. And I don't
think it's a shading sharp We don't think it's a
shading sharp incident. Maybe you may feel differently, but it's
just kind of carrying this thing on, like maybe we
need to just start preparing this team to not have
Jayden Quaintons, or do you know otherwise?
Speaker 4 (21:44):
I do not know otherwise, But I thought for a
month Stow that he would not be back that after
playing just a few games like that, it's knee flaring up,
like everybody has said that it did. I got no
reason think it's not true. And why would you probably
think if you came back for another game or two
(22:05):
that it may not just flare back up again. And
if I'm Mark Pope, I mean, I know Jaden Quainton
is gonna be really good that the couple of games
he did play, I would say he was. I don't
want you to think I would say he was okay,
he was not spectacular, but for a guy that had
been out a year, I think that's kind of what
you expected, and then now he's been out another month.
(22:25):
I just think you've got Malachi Marino who seems to
get better and better, and the more he plays, obviously
that's been an advantage. It's helped him get better. He's
not been perfect. He was not very good at Vanderbilt.
He was not very good in the first half at Arkansas.
In the second half he was insatal. I think you
just keep riding with Malachi and give him those minutes.
Then Garrison gets the backup minutes there. I think Garrison
(22:48):
had what thirteen minutes Marino had about twenty seven twenty
eight last night. To me, that's why you just keep
balancing your forty, because if you bring quaintings back, that
disrupts a chemistry. I mean, I think Mark has shown
that he's better at coaching with a shorter roster than
he is trying to figure out what he's gonna do
with Leven as well. I want to play.
Speaker 1 (23:09):
Oh no, I'm with you on that. I do think
you know the chemistry. That's kind of why I'm asking
a question. I do think the chemistry is there, but
the comments, I mean, the Jaden quaintons, I'm not certain
basketball skill wise, that we have seen enough of what
he can do or whatever.
Speaker 3 (23:25):
I didn't.
Speaker 1 (23:26):
I never really gave Shaquille O'Neill at LSU enough credit
for but at his size being able to move, he
was being able to move the way he was kind
of I think in the NBA that's what what change like.
He's just a physical, dominant person and that's kind of
how it felt about Jaden Quaintans. And so maybe Malachi
(23:47):
is probably a better basketball player, maybe better feat and
when he grows into it, it'll be better. I the
one thing I didn't I felt when Jayden did play,
I felt like he was pretty physically imposing against other people,
and I thought that was gonna be the difference. Is
why I made the Shack comparison, where you know, just
looking at the you know the skill level, you know,
(24:07):
drop back, what can you play outside the box? Uh,
some of those things came into play, but just the
idea that he just seen moving he moved people around
pretty easily or pretty effectively. That was a difference I
thought he brought to the game.
Speaker 4 (24:23):
Yeah he did. That's what he is. His physicality is
probably his greatest strength, and I think he's got pretty
adequate skills but I think physicality is what he brings
best in the college game. He is a really good
defensive player and shot blocker. But I just wonder again,
now he's been out a month and Mark Folks said
this week he was on total shutdown in practice, and
(24:45):
you're get skipping to the point of the season. That'st
of how you can kind of disrupt your lineups. Again,
of course, in fairness, I didn't see how they're gonna
win at Arkansas, so that shows you what I know.
So maybe maybe if Mark thinks he wants to get back,
and again had no indications that Jayden is not trying
to get back or anything like that. It's just that
the knee is kind of keeping that from happening. And
(25:09):
at what point do you just say, hey, let's just
go ahead and make sure we get arrested. If his
desire is to go to the NBA is ready to do that,
that probably would be best for him in the team vote.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
I know this has been saying a lot, but you
just said something that sparked something to me and kind
of is in the back of my head. You just
said you don't want to disrupt this lineup. What you
do know that same lineup you don't want to disrupts
the same lineup that got their tails woop against Vanderbilt
in Nashville, and Vanderbilt left for thirty nine minutes and
(25:44):
thirty nine seconds. You know why it was only thirty
nine minutes and thirty nine seconds that they led.
Speaker 3 (25:48):
Only that's sword first point being, is the same lineup
that you're saying, well, we don't want to disrupt this
line That same lineup got whooped so then.
Speaker 1 (26:02):
And the reason, the reason that's conversation piece to me
is because I asked Jack this, and I understand Jack's point,
and I think if you get Jaden Queen's back, you
get some toughness back. I do think with dear body
in the in the lineup, you get toughness. Jackson is
the thing with Yellowvick in there, he brings offense to
(26:22):
that and we don't I don't think we have. You
look at the start line of Yellowvick can score Moreno
can get scrappy points like he could put the ball back.
He can you know, make itself available and always gonna
just force them shots. Aberdeen, you never know what you're
gonna get from him and Chandler, you know, what you
can never never gonna get from them. I think you
start the game with toughness because I think if you
(26:44):
bring Yellowvick off the bench, he can do the different things.
I think he can stretch the floor after the team
is comfortable or we we we've roughed the team up
a little bit now that you softened up the other team.
Speaker 3 (26:54):
And that's why.
Speaker 1 (26:55):
And if you look at the last two games again,
one was a whooping and one was an impressive game
in Arkansas, Yellovick is still only playing ten to fifteen minutes,
where you still giving dia Bati twenty five to twenty
eight minutes.
Speaker 3 (27:10):
So why not just start them?
Speaker 5 (27:11):
Like?
Speaker 1 (27:11):
That's just something that's head scratching to me. And Pope
used to talk basketball to the fan base. Now you
don't talk a whole lot of basketball. I think he's
just looking not to give sound bites or offend anyone.
But when I asked Jack, then I'm like, why not
just put dea body back? And at his point, his
point is perfectly fine, Yeah, Yeleovick can bring points. Well,
(27:33):
we need points because that starting lineup really does not
manufacture points easy. But I think when you start a game,
you have forty more thirty nine minutes and fifty nine
seconds to go for the rest of the game. That
I think you established a dominis. I think you'll establish toughness.
I think you rough them up a little bit and
I think dea body can do that. Then you bring
Yellovick in. I think that's more effective. But jacksons to
(27:56):
thinking we don't want to get up to slow starts,
to having yellowvick in early helps, which it didn't help
it all togeinst Vanderbilt.
Speaker 3 (28:04):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (28:05):
But to your point, what you're talking about with Clinton's
when they were starting Diabati. That's when they when they
got beat up so bad at Gunzaga, got beat up
so bad at Michigan State, in places like that, that's
when teams gets like it. That's when he was starting.
It's just hard to figure this team out. Myself. I'm
kind of siding with Jack right now. As hard as
(28:26):
time as they've had scoring early in games that he
could take a score out and knowing that the debate
it's just not a score. I mean, I like that
last night that Alabama.
Speaker 3 (28:38):
Looked our archis.
Speaker 4 (28:39):
I've tried to bait him into taking those outside taking
some shots, and he finally turned them down. He's still
only went one for five from the field on layups,
but at least they were all tough shots. But at
least he wasn't at there throwing. I think he did
take one three pointer had the bes much chance of
going in as if I had shot it, it looked
like But so it's kind of six to one half
days of the other. But I do like yellow it
(29:02):
out there starting. If he does happen to hit a
couple of shots for you, they could keep you in
a game or keep you get you some points early.
I like that because I'm afraid if you started diabat. Yeah,
they might hold the other team to eleven points to
seven minutes, but Kentucky might have three.
Speaker 3 (29:19):
Yeah, yeah, I can go with that.
Speaker 1 (29:21):
So I think, uh, I guess before we go to break,
I think my question. I love the fact that this
team is unpredictable because any game you can win, any
game you can lose. And that's the recipe for a
hot run in the tournament, which we had, I guess
a decent run five wins in a row. But like
you said, if we shoot terribly, you can't really count
(29:43):
on points from Colin Aberdeen. Like I said, he's been
pretty surprising lady. He's been getting the ball. Like Jack
said earlier, it was a couple of circuits shots he made,
or they weren't really circuits shots. They were tough, but
there was a couple of shots that he made. Now
it looks like he just threw it up, but it
did go in, so I'll take it. And the only
other point, the only other place you're gonna get points
(30:04):
from is yellow Vicion old way, if the game is
set up old way, if the lane is open, or
if he's getting to his not so much, he's not
to get to a spot, or he really has to
just get to the bucket. He's not shooting from outside
the arc. He's not the type of player that gets
to the spot. So I think there's an easy solution
if you want to try to keep oh Way at
Bay by just clogging the lane. That way, Morana is
(30:26):
not effected, always not affecting. Now Yellowvick can stretch the
court a little bit. But I just I just don't
know if we have enough offense. I think you have
to count on Chandler being on or Aberdeen being on,
But does that give you before we go to break.
Does that give you hope that you know, what, as
bad as this team can be, we can be good
(30:48):
as well? Or do I stand alone on that thought?
Speaker 4 (30:52):
No? I mean they when you can win a Tennessee
and you can win at Arkansas, that's probably as two
of good a road winds as any team in the
country has this year be able to win at both
of those places. So that shows you on a given night, Yeah,
they can be really good. I mean Chandler did two
of the biggest shots of the game last night for
Kentucky and ends up going I think five and nine
(31:12):
from the field last night. Well, that's when he does that.
Kentucky's a whole different type of team than when he
goes one for nine. But he's just as you never
know exactly which one it's going to be. But I
think his effort level is usually pretty good. But that's
why that's why this worries me about. When you played
Diabaatee in there, that cloud that lane up even more.
(31:36):
So that's what Alway and Aberdeen, that's what they need
to be able to do, is drive. But last night
it seemed like when Diabat was in there that he
at least a lot of times stayed out of the
driving lane, and his man had had to respect him
enough to at least get out of there just long enough.
In Aberdeen and Alway both hit it hard. They don't
want they once they head to that basket, they're gone.
(31:58):
And I think that's just how this team has to
play and what they're gonna have to keep doing.
Speaker 1 (32:02):
Yeah, and that's what we want. We want the Cats winning.
You know who else wins, Kobe Vaught, he wins. So
there's a couple of things I want to discuss. So
I'm gonna go rapid fire when we come back. You
gotta tell us about all that, Larry, and we lost
a great individual that Bow and I were talking about often.
And Larry fot you can get snug from getting into
the Hall of Fame, even if you're the greatest quote
(32:23):
unquote I'm doing air quotes. Even if you're the greatest
coach in your sports, you can still get snub from
getting the Hall of Fame. We'll talk about all those
things when we come back. You're listening to Stockyards Bank
Sunday morning sports Talk on news radio six thirty WLA.
Speaker 6 (32:34):
This is the home of the Wildcats six thirty Wlap.
Speaker 1 (32:44):
Welcome Back Stockyards Bank, Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm a Anthony
wride along with Larry Vaught Bora Robinson. This is one
of my Larry Vaught Boru Robinson is one of my
favorite songs because as a kid, and I got a
picture on face Book. It's probably years back when I
first started Facebook, and that was probably like in six
(33:04):
sitting on my dad is a picture of me.
Speaker 3 (33:06):
Very little, Larry Vo. I don't know if you know.
Speaker 1 (33:08):
At one point in time, I was a little like
Kobe Vault used to be, and I said, on my
dad's lap.
Speaker 3 (33:12):
We used to watch uh sanfordce.
Speaker 1 (33:15):
Sons, and I learned at a very young age that
Fred Sanford's real name was Red Fox, which is not
really his real name, but I had to start calling
him Red Fox. But he passed away so long ago,
and boy and I were talking about just this week
that Mine Wilson, Grady Wilson passed away, which was Fred
(33:41):
Red Red Fox Sandford's big dummy son, and uh so
we wanted to give a little tribute to him.
Speaker 4 (33:49):
Larry Vaught, Yeah, that was It was quite a show
for Fred Sandford had had a lot of words of wisdom.
Speaker 7 (33:57):
But you know what the great thing about Grady Demand Wilson,
who played Lamont. There's only two people on that show
that could hold their own against Fred Sandford Red Fox.
It was Lamont and ann Estor.
Speaker 3 (34:12):
Grady.
Speaker 7 (34:13):
You do like Grety, No, I love Grady. I thought
Grady was one of the most underrated, most underappreciated characters
on that show. And some of the episodes where Red
Fox had stepped away because of contract negotiations with NBC,
they put Grady in the forefront. And some of those
episodes with Grady and Lamond are hilarious, especially when ann
(34:33):
Astor gets involved and Grady had the talk with Uncle
Woodrow and he left Anne Astor. It's one of the
funniest episodes of Sanford and Son. But the clip I
played was about the barracoota where Fred was going to
get remarried and Lamont it's not happy and called her
a barracuda and just absolutely hilarious. But it's one of
those shows that you bond with your dad with. You know,
(34:54):
like my sister, until she was much older, maybe would
not appreciate watching Sanford and Son, but I did at
a young age because I thought it was hilarious. And
again another show that I bonded with my grandfather with.
I mean, it was some kind of man code that
you grew up watching Sanford and Son with your dad,
and I just think the world of that show. And
I was telling you I watched Sandford every night. By
(35:16):
the way, do you know the connection between Red Fox
and Kentucky? Now his dad was born in Hickman, Kentucky.
Speaker 3 (35:26):
Didn't?
Speaker 7 (35:27):
Yes, And his dad was actually named Fred Sanford. Red
Fox's real name is John Elroy Sandford, Right, I didn't
know he's from Kentucky.
Speaker 3 (35:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (35:38):
The other thing about Lamont demon Wilson is that when
Fred was in contract negotiations with NBC, he said, if
they don't get it taken care of with Red Fox,
he said, I'm stepping away too, because this cannot work
without Red Fox. And I can see that they had
a chemistry. I could see, Yeah, they did. It would
be very hard to replace. They tried, but it's not
(35:58):
the same. So rest in peace, Samford. Thanks for the
memories and the laughs.
Speaker 1 (36:02):
Before we get to before we find out about the
success of Kobe Vaks.
Speaker 3 (36:07):
We only got a couple of minutes before we get
to it.
Speaker 1 (36:09):
Was was blind Mellow Jelly a real person or is
that a name made up there for that episode.
Speaker 7 (36:14):
Name I want my Daddy's records.
Speaker 3 (36:17):
I want my daddy's records.
Speaker 7 (36:19):
Or try to get Bubba. You know they were always
up to some kind of get rich scheme. Yeah, well,
I mean it's not it.
Speaker 3 (36:28):
Was, but it was. You're right.
Speaker 7 (36:30):
It was never well thought out. And he he pretended
to get Bubba, Bubba was visually impaired. They were acting
like that, and that was the famous line from that episode,
I want.
Speaker 3 (36:39):
My Daddy's records.
Speaker 1 (36:41):
Absolutely, Larry Vaught Kobe vaughts back winning things, and I
don't want Kobe. I don't want little Kobe Larry to
think that he has to win all the time growing
up because I grew up losing. And that's why I
love winning so much, because I've lost as a youngster,
and I was I didn't like this. Then we get
to win in the lot. He's like, ah, this is better.
(37:01):
It feels better because you've lost before. But Kobe rarely
loses and you, as you stated at a point or two,
he may have been a sore loser in front of
you that you didn't appreciate. But he does realize you
can't win all the time, or does he not.
Speaker 4 (37:18):
I don't know that he really. I think he realizes
that you that you came there. That doesn't mean he
didn't want to win all the time.
Speaker 3 (37:24):
And what did he do this weekend?
Speaker 4 (37:27):
Well, he had a really good weekend. Thank you for asking.
He'd been battling an arm injury that it kept me
from wrestling here recently, and wasn't sure if he's going
to get to wrestle in his middle school regional or
not this weekend at Campbell County, but he did and
ended up finishing second and qualified for the State Wrestling
middle School Wrestling Tournament. It will be February twenty second
(37:49):
in Louisville, which means during the morning of that show,
there may be a few times have to go on
mute because I'll probably do I'll probably do my part
from there he's wrestling, I have to go on mute
so that words don't come across the air that aren't
supposed to. I mean, if I was really proud of that.
Then he went home and they had their Rile eighth
(38:09):
grade football banquet on Saturday night, and he won the
Ted Morgan, mister Raider award just goes to the player
who embodies what you want to person you want to
be repping your program on and off the field. So
he was really really happy and proud of that.
Speaker 1 (38:24):
Congratulations Kobe, Congratulations to the NFL for proven what I've
said on this show for many years that you can't
trust sports because if Bill Belichick is not the first
ballot Hall of Famer, then where's the integrity of the game.
If nobody else is winning at his staple, who else
is on going before him? For Jack, for Bo, for Larry.
I'm Anthony White and this has been Stockyards Bank Sunday
