Rex in the Morning on See One, All One, Philip Philli and the
Jets. Wait, it's actually it'sactually Philly Ocean on the phone from Yacht
Lely Crew. I get the joke. That's hilarious. I love it,
man, morning that that is thecoolest thing I who ever knew there was
anything called yacht rock? Are y'alljust you gotta be like the first ones
(00:24):
to do this. You're a pioneer. You know what. When we first
started, we really had no ideathat this would even be a thing.
You know. We were kind oflooking around and noticing no one was doing
anything with this music, and welove it. We have always loved it,
and we thought, you know, man, why don't we give this
a shot. We'll see if anyonelikes it. We don't know if we
(00:46):
play six gigs or six thousand orwhatever, and then it's just caught on
like wildfire. It's been so coolto see people respond to this music that
we love so much. Now,were you guys just like in a regular
band before, or you just kindof knew other music musicians and said,
hey, guys, we're gonna dothis thing called yacht rock where we can
dress up like we're all, youknow, captains on a carnival cruise,
(01:08):
but we're skilled artists and we'll singold songs that people just love to howl
at the you know who who whois in in their car and when Afric
you know, if you hear AfricaToto, who doesn't just wail that song
exactly? Well, no one thatI'm friends with anyway. Yeah, we
(01:29):
we just uh, you know,we are all lifelong musicians. We've been
in a number of different projects throughoutour whole career. Yeah, but something
you know, you never know what'sreally going to take off. And you
know, I personally have been ineverything from blues bands to ska bands to
original like pop rock bands. Yeah. You know, if you would have
said to me, this is thething that's going to take off and that
(01:52):
people are going to resonate with,I would have been just as surprise as
anyone else. Like, but it'sso cool and and I think there's a
reason for it, and that isthat one this music is so iconic,
and it's it's known by so manydifferent generations. You know, we have
people in our audience from you know, their sixties on up all the way
down to like millennials and teenagers nowbecause their parents have exposed them to this
(02:15):
or even better, in many cases, during the pandemic, this music started
showing up on TikTok and on Instagramand a whole younger generation of people got
exposed to it. So it's socool to be in a project and in
a band that brings people together ofdifferent generations. It's it's pretty amazing and
(02:37):
pretty rare, honestly. Well, when you touched on the fact that sometimes
and this is sort of like thestory of life, because you can have
a project in mind, you canhave an idea, you can have a
video, you can work on thingsso hard and then when when it gets
out there, there's like almost noresponse. And then you do the stupidest
(02:58):
thing or something silly or something thatyou thought, well this, no one's
going to care about this, andthen it explodes out of nowhere. Yeah,
and yeah, and that's so cool. Yeah. I think people respond
to to how much fun we haveon stage. Yeah, you know we
we we are true, you know, truly performers. We love what we
do and we love to get theaudience involved. We don't just stand up
(03:20):
there and go through the motions andI think that's really what people respond to
in addition to the music, ofcourse, but you know, they love
to come see a show and tobe entertained and to be a part of
that show as well. I mean, people show up wearing their own captain's
hats, their own sailor uniforms. It's it's a spectacle to behold. It's
pretty fun. Now. I watchedthe video this morning because I knew we
(03:45):
were going to talk for like, you know, the past couple of weeks.
And then finally I go to myemail and I'm like, Okay,
cool, let me see exactly whatthis is. And and I love sex
on the beach and the video isbrilliant. I thought, thank you,
the video is great. Did youguys actually know any of those women in
the video before you shot the video? No? You know what, our
(04:06):
incredible director Miles. Yeah, hecame up with the whole concept for the
video and he put it together andyou know, he cast the actresses and
the actor and all that stuff. However, we did bring one of the
stars of the music video, misterMario Lopez. You'll see him. And
you know, you're talking about themusic video for our first original yacht rocks.
(04:27):
Oh yeah, Sex on the Beach, And we wrote that original because
we're so enamored with this music andwe wanted to have something of our own
that really fits seamlessly in with thegenre, so we wrote this song.
It's basically about drinking way too muchand falling in love and having a torrid
love story. Happened to you?But yeah, So then we made this
(04:49):
music video. And we've known Mariofor a number of years. He's come
to a ton of shows and he'sa big fan. We've also done charity
events with him, and he's justa good guy. And he said,
you know what, when you guysdo a music video, you let me
know I'll be there. And hedid a great job. He did a
great job as the bartender. Hewas fantastic. He's one of the first
(05:11):
people you see when you start towatch the video and you go, oh,
wait a second, and you know, I'll tell you it honestly throws
a certain amount of credibility to thevideo almost immediately, because he's not an
easy guy to get and you're notgoing to get him for free. And
you guys are actually managed by thewhat is it Andy Gould, who who
(05:32):
also manages Rob Zombie and Pantera andGuns and Roses. How how on earth
did you guys wind up with him? He randomly wandered into one of our
shows one night. Yeah, hesaw we were playing this club called the
(05:53):
Viper Room in Los Angeles, whichis an iconic music venue out here.
We were doing a monthly residency forabout a year, a year and a
half. And you know our crowd, like I said, they come wearing
Captain's hats. They're super enthusiastic. And he saw a line around the block
of people wearing Captain's hats waiting toget into the Viper Room of all places,
(06:14):
and he's like, what the heckis going on here? I got
to check it out. So hecame in and he saw our showing,
and right then he was like,I want to work with these guys.
That's a beautiful story. And it'ssort of like the effect we talked about
earlier. You probably didn't give ita whole lot of thought in the beginning.
Hey, we'll put on these outfits, we'll play this great music people
(06:35):
love, and then the whole thingexploded. So you guys have a huge
tour also, And I was lookingat some of these places, you've got
private events, and then you're inHouston, Austin, Dallas, Las Vegas
a couple of times. It's gotto be wonderful to have things blow up
for you so quickly. Yeah,it's really it's really been an amazing ride.
(06:59):
This year has been our biggest yearso far. We're really excited to
be playing in Texas, as youjust said, for the first time in
our six years. We're coming toTexas in September, so we do have
three shows and like you said,Houston, Austin, and Dallas. We're
so excited to bring yacht rock, you know, to Texas. You know
(07:20):
there's an appetite for it there.People have been messaging us for at least
the last four or five years. When do you guys come into Texas.
It's finally happening. We want toinvite everyone in the state to come out
to the shows because we know you'llhave a great time. But yeah,
it's Our schedule is crazy. Weplay anywhere from one hundred two hundred and
twenty five shows a year, sometimesmore, and it's just picking up so
(07:43):
much steam. People are are definitelyon board with yacht rock and We're just
