Speaker 1 (00:43):
Well, good Friday morning to you. Oh man, my voice
sounded richer, more fulfilling. Did they do some things around these.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
Air parts around in your headphones?
Speaker 1 (00:54):
No, just in the audio in the equipment.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
I don't know. It sounds to work on stuff.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
Engineerom's very Oh really that sounds full.
Speaker 4 (01:03):
Of to me.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
Good morning, Welcome in. It is a football Friday. We
got you covered from six to ten here on Chucking
Buck in the Morning, Sports Radio ninety three point three
k j RFM. Welcome to the radio program as we
get you ready for your weekend. And I would just
say this, I don't normally say this. I would be
a little careful out there on the roads. There are
(01:25):
rains coming down hard, and there are you know, they
always talk about black ice. You gotta separate those, because
then it sounds like you're saying, be careful of black
guys on the road. Black ice, you know, during the winter.
But there's like black puddles out there, right, And if
you go around a semi because you can't see because
(01:46):
he's spraying you with water, you don't know if you're
going into one of those black puddles. So I would
It took me a little longer to get here because
of having to dodge and navigate through all of that.
So it's a little dangerous out there.
Speaker 5 (01:59):
And it's not even just on the freeway, by the way,
because my whole car got covered in water from on mercer,
like a car went through a black puddle in an.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
Intersection and just spread. I was like, I can't see
a thing.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
I can't see a thing.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
A thing. It's like I was driving underwater.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
Ashley with her brand new Mazda Submarine.
Speaker 5 (02:21):
Yeah, yeah, it's a it's anything. That's one thing I
haven't told people because.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
I don't want everyone to be jealous, right right, right, Well,
well they didn't probably don't even show you on the
test drive that capability.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
You find out after you made yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Yeah, oh, by the way, if you press this button fully,
sub you can go to Widby.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Yeah, you don't have to wait in the ferry line.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
That's cool. That would be cool. What are we waiting for? Technology?
Speaker 3 (02:45):
I want these flying cars. Give me a give me
a boat.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
Come on, technology. Gosh, it's like you've been sitting on
your hands.
Speaker 6 (02:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
Uh. Anyway, a little bit dangerous out there on the road,
so do be careful. Don't get so distracted by being
entertained your favorite Sparts talk radio show that you don't
see the black puddles all over the roadways. But we
made it in. I wasn't sure Ashley was going to
make it in on time. I told Buckets, I don't
know if he's gonna make it in on time.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
Yeah, I didn't know if I was going to either.
Speaker 5 (03:13):
It was and in the like everybody on the freeway
was going real slow at least, thank goodness.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
But as I said then, I was.
Speaker 5 (03:21):
Like, oh, especially because I come the express lanes. Well,
there's a fun little thing that happens when you're on
the express lanes and you go under the rest of
I five, all their water it's down onto the express lanes.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
That's super fun.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
It's called a waterfall. Yeah, some people drive from miles
around to see those things. Yeah, Bunky's got one right
around the corner from the show.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
You're lucky.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
Yeah, Yeah, beautiful, beautiful stuff. You just don't want it
while you're driving. No, all right, well, welcome into the show.
We got a lot to discuss today. It is a
football Friday. It is sponsored by Tito's Handmade Vodka, proud
sponsor of the Seahawks, distilled and bottled by Fifth Generation Inc. Allton, Texas,
forty percent alcohol by volume, Saber Responsibly. And we do
(04:05):
have a lot of football to discuss today, and we've
got a lot of smart people to discuss it with us.
So I can promise you over our course of our
four hours, we got you a Seahawks RAMS preview. We
got that down on lock. But we're going to start
with baseball today because we were dealt the disappointing news
last night that the nation didn't recognize what we knew,
(04:28):
and that is that Kyle Raley is the most valuable player,
or was the most valuable player this year in the
American League. And it was close. He got forty three
I think I said thirty nine, forty three percent of
the first place votes, but that wasn't enough. He and
Judge got either first or second on all thirty ballots.
(04:50):
But Aaron Judge does, in fact win the American League
MVP in twenty twenty five. Yeah, they got that wrong.
I think they got it wrong too. I mean, I
mean I said this at the beginning of the playoffs,
and it sounds like an odd thing to say, but
I said, when Dan Wilson was trying to make his
decision on who he's going to start number one starter,
(05:11):
I like, there's not a bad decision, but there is
a wrong decision. And I know that sounds weird, but
now I get to use it again. I don't think
there was a bad decision to make between Judge and Raleigh,
but I think there is a distinct wrong decision to make,
and seventeen people out of thirty made the wrong decision. Yeah,
it's unfortunate.
Speaker 4 (05:30):
I mean that really.
Speaker 7 (05:31):
I mean it's like three people had a better idea.
I mean, I'm with you. It's not wrong decision. I mean,
it's not like Aaron Judge didn't isn't deserving of an MVP.
It's just when you're measuring the two I don't think
it's I don't think it's particularly close. We did discuss that,
and it just as Cal rowly what he did. I mean,
Aaron Judge even said in his acceptance actually as before
(05:53):
they announced it, they were asking him what's it like
to be the captain and all the pressure of playing,
you know, in New York and wearing the pinstripes. And
he's like, yeah, there's a lot, you know, but it's
what I.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
Want to do. I like. I like the limelight.
Speaker 7 (06:08):
I like thee When I was a free agent, I
wanted to come back and play here. It's and then
he goes, it's not like what Cal does you know?
Catching all that and the abuse that he takes, and
I mean even he basically kind of says, yeah, I
don't do near as much as that guy does. Now
obviously he's not going to turn it in or say, hey, Cal,
(06:29):
you deserve this. I mean, I know I had a
way better offensive season than you, but you did, you
did way more. But to me, that's where I don't
know if somewhere in the translation the most valuable is
is different than the most outstanding, or how if there's
more weight put into the overarching offensive, you know, prowess
that goes into it, and not enough rewarded or awarded
(06:53):
to the defensive acumen that somebody brings to the table.
But yeah, I think they got it wrong. I mean,
it's a bummer because Aaron Judge is a generational hitter,
without a doubt him, He's a generational player. He's pretty
damn good in the outfield too. Really, he was most
certainly before he started getting hurt a couple for the
last couple of years. But I mean, he's a generational player.
(07:16):
And this is Cal's career year. I mean, I don't
expect him to go out and hit sixty. I expect
him probably maybe forty might be the ceiling or the
floor of what his career home run numbers are going
to be.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
But he's not ever going.
Speaker 7 (07:28):
To hit three forty and hit sixty home runs and
be up there probably in this where is Aaron Judge?
This is probably who we're going to see for the
you know, the foreseeable futures. Is a dude that just
hits over three hundred and hits fifty plus homers and
probably is an MVP candidate every year.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
I don't but I don't want Cal to win it.
Because of that, I don't want I mean, it was
it's the old Michael Jordan debate, like, oh boy, Michael's
probably gonna win it next year, So Charles isn't going
to have a better season than this, Let's give it
to Barkley. I don't want Cal to win it that way.
I don't want like special consideration to be given to
cal because he might not have another career year like this,
(08:07):
but Judge probably will. But just standing on its merits alone,
I mean every I mean it was, it was a
razor close evaluation from most people. And I think that
certainly the vote came down that way. And I do
(08:27):
think and this is something that you and I have
disagreed upon. I do think that everybody who vote for
that voted for this, even the ones that voted for Judge,
recognize how much more is on cal Raley's plate. It's
just how much value do you give that? Ye does
it make up for the gap and the overall offensive
(08:50):
numbers that Judge put up versus Cal. I mean we're
talking about two hundred ops points. I mean, that's the
difference between you know, Julio and Miles Master Bony. Okay,
I mean that's what we're talking about here, like two
hundred w excuse me, an ops plus of like sixty
(09:13):
points difference. I mean it was a sizeable gap. Offensively,
the three of us and thirteen out of thirty voters,
and god knows how many other people, not just in
Seattle but nationwide think that what Cal brought to the
table does not only bridge that gap, but overtakes that gap.
And part of that is because Judge spent so much
(09:36):
time just hitting this year. Cal would have won head
to head against show Hey this year if it would
have been Cal versus show Hey, Cal would have won
the MVP and show A won unanimously. On the national
league side, because the gap between show A's numbers and
Cows weren't nearly as great as what the gap between
(09:57):
Judges numbers were and Cow's. So yes, I think they
missed it. I think that Cal and everything actually that
he does bring to the table does make up for
that difference. But there were enough people that voted, and
it wasn't East Coast bias because apparently the East Coast
was the only place, but there wasn't bias.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
Yeah, and seven votes for each guy.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
But there were enough people who cover this sport for
a living. That decided we think that the offensive gap
is more impressive than the defensive gap and the intangibles gap.
And so that's what it came down to. And I
don't think it's right, but I at least can buy
that Aaron Judge had an MVP season this year.
Speaker 5 (10:41):
Yeah, and I think you know, we have all agreed
that they're both excellent candidates. Nothing should be taking away
from Aaron Judge. The interesting thing though, is when you
think about, like, well, okay, so what is the MVP.
What is it supposed to be? Right, it's your most
valuable player? Now is that your most valuable player to
their team? Because Cal was the most valuable player to.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
His team, Well so it was Judge.
Speaker 5 (11:01):
No, but yes, But I'm saying I think that Cal
was more valuable to the Mariners than Judge was to
the Yankees for everything that he does top to bottom.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
Now you could look at it.
Speaker 5 (11:10):
Who was the most valuable person to the league, who
had the stories being written about them every single day
because they were breaking records week after week.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
Cal Rawley.
Speaker 5 (11:22):
So I would say in both those situations, he was
the more valuable player.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
Well, I mean, I think it is supposed to be
who's the most valuable player to your team. I think
that that is the decision that they are trying to make.
There was just you know, there were just more people
out of thirty that voted that Aaron Judge was more
valuable to the Yankees than what Cal Rawley was to
the Mariners.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
We disagree with it, Yeah, that's the part I can't
figure out.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
And maybe we would feel differently if we watched Judge
play every day and followed up. I mean, one of
the things that Sean Casey had said when he was
interviewing Aaron Judge was or evaluating Aaron Judge like, people
don't understand what a great human being this guy is,
And I'm like, no better than our guy.
Speaker 5 (12:08):
Yeah right, and it better than a humanitarian award either.
Speaker 1 (12:12):
Yeah, yeah, yeah true. But I mean, but also on
the flipside, we pour into so much about how how Cal,
what a leader he is, what a captain he is,
and all a Judge fulfills that exact same role and
does it with just as much dignity and just as
much class as what Cal does. Absolutely, so, I mean,
it was just two phenomenal candidates, and I really do
(12:34):
think that if it was Cal versus Show, Hey, Cal
would be Cal would have walked away with the award. Unfortunately,
Judges numbers offensively across the board. I mean, he hit
three thirty. Guys aren't even hitting three hundred. Now, that's
three thirty while getting pitched around more than any batter
in all of Major League Baseball. So there's no doubt
(12:56):
Aaron Judge had an MVP season, But so did Cal.
Only one gets to win it, and unfortunately, I think
they got it wrong. Yeah, I think they got it
wrong too.
Speaker 7 (13:05):
I mean it's the I get the idea that how well,
it's not the idea the fact that Judges numbers offensively
were just supreme. They were They were head and shoulders
above Col's. And that's crazy because Cow hit sixty homers. No,
but again, it's not like he hit twenty eight homers
and hit three forty and.
Speaker 1 (13:24):
You know, more home runs and RBI.
Speaker 7 (13:26):
Yeah, I mean it's but I mean it's he didn't.
It wasn't by a ton, and yet the batting average
and on base percentage and walks and all of the
stuff that equate to that ops being substantially bigger. Yeah,
Judge was without a doubt better offensively, and yet it
to me, it it just shows that, Yeah, well the people,
(13:47):
the thirty people, and I don't understand how it's just thirty.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
People the one it's one per market.
Speaker 7 (13:52):
Yeah, I'm just saying I don't ever want anything of
substance being decided by thirty people. And so of the
thirty people, you know, they all agreed that it's definitely
was between Judge and cal There was no discrepancy on that,
so they weren't far off. It's just that, basically, I
think seventeen of them don't understand the difference between defensively.
(14:15):
They don't put the same amount of weight on that
versus the two hundred points in ops. I of course
that they recognize, Wow, catching is far dough tougher than
playing right field and dhing some right, they obviously understand it,
and they weigh that. I just don't think they put
enough weight into it. That's why I think it's wrong.
That's why I've been saying the whole time. I don't
(14:37):
think it should be particularly close. I thought it was
going to be close. I was right there with you,
kind of thinking I wouldn't be surprised if they go
with Aaron Judge because of the eye popping thing that
just is you can't you don't have to be that knowledgeable.
You don't have to be the most knowledgeable to be
able to recognize that offensive year that Judge did is
(14:59):
outste It's so outstanding that it makes it dwarfs the
outstanding offensive season that Cal had. Now Col's I think
is just has there's different stuff to it. And this
is where if I do have bias, that it'll go
into it where it's I have a hard time not
adding extra weight to the fact that it's switch hitting
and that it's you know, twenty homers for the first
time ever from each side of the plate that anybody's
(15:21):
ever done, and the people's names that he broke for
switch hitting home runs and for catching home runs. And
that's where it's like, Okay, now, I know that I'm
kind of grasping its straws to some degree to give
more credence and more credit to it. But really just
the bottom line, without the bias involved in the fact
that I like him, and I actually like Aaron Judge too,
(15:42):
it just boils down to I just I just think that,
plain and simple, the entirety of his work was far
more valuable than the entirety of Aaron Judge's work. I mean,
if it's you want to say, forty more hits, Okay,
that's once every four days he got an extra hit,
then cal that's that's not drastic to me. Now, over
(16:02):
the course of the full season, obviously it turns into
higher numbers and better numbers. And yet there's just so
many seventeen thousand pitches Calcott, and I mean it's like
there's just there's just something about it that just is
it rubs me the wrong way. And I just think
that there's something missed by those that are voting. And
I just wish three others, three others would have went
the other way.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
I mean, it was closed. I don't think though, I
don't think that this is a sports writer thing. I
think that former baseball players, I mean, we might have
had the exact same result. I mean, I've logged a
lot of hours watching MLB Network, and I told you
closer we were getting to this thing. The more that
those former players were talking about Aaron Judge, I think that.
(16:44):
I mean, I don't think this is baseball writers don't
recognize the significance. They do. But I do think that
baseball players might have come up with the exact same
result that what we have because.
Speaker 5 (17:01):
It current players voted him the most outstanding player of
the Yeah.
Speaker 1 (17:06):
But okay, but that process, well then if that's what
then celebrated, Yeah, I mean, if that process, I don't
even know what the rules are behind that process because
it's not even recognized as a legitimate award.
Speaker 3 (17:20):
Yeah, I don't get it.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
So I don't even know what that process is. I mean,
it could have been just like ballots were left out
someday and some guys filled it out, some guys didn't.
I have no idea. This has been a calculated process
that they've been doing for a number of years. So,
I mean, so I don't know if you just isolated
one player from every single team like they do in
this process, if we would have had the exact same
(17:43):
result with Aaron Judge. I can just tell you. Listening
to former players on MLB Network, they were leaning toward
Judge too. I mean, and those are guys that certainly
played the game recognized the value of cal Raley and
what their what their repeated message was was, don't get
numb to how amazing Aaron Judge is, just because you've
(18:05):
seen him put together a season like this before. That
was their repeated message. We disagree with it, but I
don't know if it was. If they actually had the
same funneling process and you used players or former players
or managers, if we would have ended up with a different.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
Result, would be interesting. Yeah, I would, Yeah, it would
be an interesting experiment.
Speaker 1 (18:26):
I'd like to know, But I'm not sure that we would.
I mean maybe we would. All right, let's find out
what's on tap for the show today? What's on TEP?
What's untep? All right, Aaron Judge edges cow for al MVP.
We'll talk more about it in the Friday O Show
Today show. A one is fourth MVP on the National
(18:49):
League side of second in the National League and very funny.
He kissed his dog. That was his celebration. If hugged
them both, it might be like good jap And you
don't do that in public. I don't know. Is that
like a Japanese thing? You don't show affection on television.
Speaker 7 (19:07):
I mean there is some differences in how they show affection.
Speaker 1 (19:11):
I will say that. And now that the award shows
are over, because there was an award show afterwards, And
by the way, Cal and Julio were named All MLB
this year first Team and that award show, and then
Wu and Munjos were named the second team, so congratulations
to them. That's not something that gets talked about a lot.
We always talk about the All Pro Team at the
(19:32):
end of the NFL season, But I don't know if
I don't, I don't even remember them doing this.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
Well, we probably don't very often have a Mariner on it,
so maybe we don't have a reason to talk about it.
Speaker 1 (19:42):
I think it is new. I don't think it's brand new.
I think they've done it before. But I do think
like the award ceremony and all of that stuff might
be new. I could be wrong about that. But now
the Stove offseason does officially begin, and the first episode
of Stove Anders and I recorded yesterday. It is available
on our website. I can't find it either. I don't
(20:03):
know how to find things.
Speaker 3 (20:05):
I'll grab the link and tweeted out.
Speaker 1 (20:06):
But I do know that Anders and I tweeted it
out last night on x so you can find it
and we'll see if we can't get it on the
front page of the website Crack and win last night
over Winnipeg by a final score of five to three.
Jordan Eberle scored twice in the third period, so he
goes so the crack and take it. Finally, a little
(20:29):
bit of an outburst of offense. They'll be facing those
baby face Sharks tomorrow. Baby sharks, Baby.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
Sharks gonna hate us tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (20:40):
No, that's a great song. Tomorrow at seven o'clock?
Speaker 8 (20:43):
Is that?
Speaker 1 (20:43):
Is that game? College basketball? Tonight? It will be U
Dub versus Wazoo eight o'clock tip. That's right, it's the
Apple Cup on the hardwood and the Husky's taking on
the Koogs. Also, the Zags in action tonight. An interesting
game for them. They're at Arizona State. It's football, you
dob host Purdue this Saturday. We'll hear a little bit
(21:04):
from Rick new Isil on this game in case you
missed it. Also Thursday Night football the New England Patriots.
I knew I should have taken the under damn it.
Twenty seven to fourteen. I'm gonna lose that Penn State
bet now I know.
Speaker 4 (21:16):
I am.
Speaker 1 (21:16):
Twenty seven to fourteen. The final score of the Patriots
over the Jets last night to start week number eleven
of the National Football League season, and we will play
some more Factor fiction today at seven thirty five Ashley's
pick today, but most of the show will be about tomorrow,
excuse me, Sunday's game between the Seahawks and the Rams.
Greg Bell at seven oh five, Hugh Millen X's and
(21:39):
O's at nine, Mike Homeran at nine thirty, and plenty
of conversation in between. As a matter of fact, what's
at stake for Sam Darnold in tomorrow's game? Interesting stupid question,
but we're going to answer it anyway. Sports Radio ninety
three point three KJRFM.
Speaker 8 (22:02):
Let's win to the front of the net.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
Close Winterton shot, put it over. Out's oving it back
to the point. Bit's done straight away. Toleran shots stop.
Speaker 9 (22:23):
Helly Toleran with a rocket from the right side.
Speaker 1 (22:27):
It's a power play goal. We're tied at three. Man
even ears back to Marshman in the circle. What's a
hip check? Get the domestic cognown black man m.
Speaker 9 (22:39):
Star Braddy vaneers top of the right circle. He finds
every down loll tick tackle, that's captain. What's the cracking
on top.
Speaker 10 (22:54):
By a four to three store four to three Seattle
extra attacker at for Winnipeg Ryolin.
Speaker 6 (23:00):
They'll push it.
Speaker 1 (23:01):
Up the boards.
Speaker 9 (23:01):
What a beck not a little hole blide not even
ears near side of captain blocks in sto.
Speaker 8 (23:16):
Back to back goals for.
Speaker 9 (23:17):
The captain, he's got two.
Speaker 1 (23:20):
The Crackhead ahead by two. Two goals for Everley, a
goal to assist for Vince None. The Kraken, who have
been struggling offensively as of late, put five biscuits in
the basket and they defeat the Winnipeg Jets last night
five to three. So at least they I mean, they won.
(23:41):
They didn't have to play overtime to do it. That's nice.
That happens almost every game, eight of them. But Evert
fits you on the call there last night, of course
the voice and those are your mc deliveries of the game.
Last night's top calls from the Krack and Audio Network,
brought to you by McDonald's Ordering the food you Crave
with Nick Delivery as a whole new way to love McDonald's.
(24:01):
Order directly from the McDonald's app and SELECTMIC Delivery today
and start earning points for free food. See app for details.
That's right uh. Kraikn and the JITs played to a
five to three final last night, the crack and winning,
and now they get ready to face baby Sharks.
Speaker 4 (24:20):
Did it?
Speaker 1 (24:20):
Baby Sharks? The baby face Sharks. We'll be in town
tomorrow night at seven o'clock. That's where we'll start our
frost brewed course, light Chills, Choose Chill headlines that it's
a lot to say. Uh, and let's get it going
with baseball here. Eric Judge earns the excuse me, edges
Cal for the AL MVP. Yeah, he earned an MVP,
(24:42):
but not more than our guy. We're all very disappointed,
Bucky perhaps most of all, even though it is a
tight race and so Cal Rawley just fell a little
bit short. Judge got seventeen of the thirty first place votes.
Both Judge and Cal got all of the first or
second place votes, and it's Aaron Judge who wins the
(25:03):
AL MVP, his third of his career. Shoe Aotani won
his fourth MVP in his career on the national league side,
and celebrated by kissing his dog and not his wife.
There you go. College basketball UDUB and Washington State play
tonight at eight o'clock in Pullman. The Zags are also
in action. They'll be taking on Arizona State that will
(25:25):
also tip off at eight o'clock. College football, you dub
host Purdue tomorrow at four honks, get it started at noon,
and plenty of other college football action that we'll outline
for you in the OHO at eight o'clock Thursday Night Football.
The Jets lost to the New England Patriots last night
twenty seven to fourteen, and the Seahawks, of course, will
(25:47):
be in action against the Rams this Sunday at one.
It's time to talk to Greg Bell. All right, Happy
Friday to you. So here we go, Here we go.
I mean, this is the game that you've sort of
had circled the entire off season, maybe since the schedule
came out. We talked about in the preseason. You've been
telling us that it won't matter until this team squares
(26:08):
off against the Rams. That's when we'll know how good
they are. So obviously you're putting this game in the
area of very critical importance here on Sunday.
Speaker 4 (26:21):
It is.
Speaker 8 (26:21):
It's a barometer game, a measuring stick.
Speaker 4 (26:24):
Again.
Speaker 8 (26:24):
They hired Mike McDonald to win this game, to beat
the forty nine.
Speaker 4 (26:28):
Ers in the Rams.
Speaker 8 (26:29):
They narrowly lost in Week one to the forty nine ers,
and they get them again.
Speaker 4 (26:33):
Week eighteen in the season.
Speaker 8 (26:36):
They've yet to play the Rams this year. We all
know the combined Seattle seven to two, the combined records
of those seven wins, the teams they've beaten seven, the
seven victories, twenty two wins and thirty four losses. So
they haven't done anything yet. Because they they've done things.
Of course, they get themselves in position to be here,
but they're not going to win the division till they
(26:57):
beat the Rams in forty nine ers. Hugh mentioned something
yesterday that I had remembered i'd written last year, and
then I've kind of forgotten about that game.
Speaker 4 (27:08):
Let's throw out the.
Speaker 8 (27:09):
JV game, as he put it in to end the
regular season in Englewood last year, because the Rams had
everything clinched and rested all their starters. Stafford didn't play Gino.
Smith just was throwing for his incentive bonuses.
Speaker 6 (27:20):
It was throw a game.
Speaker 8 (27:22):
The game in Seattle in November early December, late November.
In the overtime game, McVeigh and Stafford got just thirteen
points on McDonald's offense in regulation and If Smith doesn't
throw the one hundred and five yard interception return touchdown
on the red zone, the Seahawks probably win that game
with the Rams only scoring thirteen points. So McDonald has
(27:44):
had a leg up on McVeigh in their one head
to head meeting. That game was more indicative as to
why they hired McDonald. Can he do it again? That's
the question. Stafford comes into the game being the first
quarterback I found this kind of rising. Actually this hadn't
happened before. He's the first quarterback in NFL history to
have four more touchdown passes with no interceptions in three
(28:07):
consecutive games. It's three in a row in counting coming
into this game on Sunday. So can McDonald in the
defense now that it's becoming almost hole again with everybody
but Julian love back healthy. Can they do what they
did in Lumenfield last November to the Rams again? That's
the question whether they'll be in first place Sunday night
or not.
Speaker 1 (28:25):
I'm with you.
Speaker 7 (28:26):
I think the other side of that coin, obviously is
very intriguing as well, is what can what can Sam
donald and company do against that Rams defense?
Speaker 1 (28:34):
And so just quickly, I mean I suppose health wise,
where are we at?
Speaker 7 (28:39):
I saw Gray's Abel was on the injury list or
you know, on the injury list a report if he's
not in the are you looking at what Cable do
and OLU with Timmy and Anthony Bradford up the middle.
Speaker 8 (28:53):
Let's just he's going to play. I sign my practice yesterday.
Oh Timmy's gonna play, yes, but no, Gray's Abel's gonna play.
I saw him a practice yesterday.
Speaker 4 (29:01):
He looked like he was normal.
Speaker 1 (29:02):
Good to go.
Speaker 8 (29:03):
List him as a heel. But he was a limited participant.
That doesn't mean he hasn't been in the game plans,
the meetings, and in fact on the field practicing with
the starters this week, this time of year. The injury report,
people just see names on it. There Oh, no crazy
abels on it. One, if they're limited participant, it means
they took at least one portion of their normal reps off.
(29:25):
That could be a series. It's very there's a wide
range of what limited means. Two, it's late mid late
November and he's already played nine games. They're resting, they're
preserving themselves for Sunday. The injury reports, especially with limited
participation aren't very always very indicative of who's going to
(29:46):
play on Sunday. Zabel's been a revelation he really has.
There's a video out there on the internet him miked
up as they call it, with Kalis Campbell during the
Cardinals game, and he's just trash talking a future Hall
of Fame pass rusher and the guy's like, I have
one hundred and fifteen man, and he he's goes, well,
(30:09):
he ain't getting one hundred and.
Speaker 6 (30:10):
Sixteen on me, and he didn't.
Speaker 8 (30:13):
And he still has yet this season to give up
a sack, a rookie starting right away, his boys, his
trash talk, which I've written about at the News Tribute
as well disabled something else. That guy as tough as
they came on that team. I mean Midwest, Hardy Stock,
Upper Northwest. He's playing. Ernest Jones also limited participant.
Speaker 4 (30:34):
He's playing.
Speaker 8 (30:36):
Tory Horton was the guy who had practiced on Wednesday,
who didn't practice yesterday, took a step back in his
leg shin injury. Josh Jones was the most telling thing
to me that he was back full go yesterday. Now
this is the point in the concussion protocol that Rake
Wollen a couple of weeks ago, took a step back.
He had practiced on Wednesday Wool and had Thursday. He
(30:58):
tried to come back and duplicate that, couldn't and then
he missed the game opposite with Job Job practice Now
two days in a round on the second day full,
it's all signs are Josh Job's going to play as well?
Speaker 1 (31:09):
Well, I was going to ask about that because the
ripple effect of that I just did. I just did
a no cliche key to victory talking about how Rake
Woolan might be the key because I was assuming Jackson
Job was not going to or Job wasn't going to
be playing in this game. But now the ripple effect
if he does play, what does that do to wooland
what does that do to Pritchett.
Speaker 8 (31:30):
Well, I would think Pritchett is the guy who slides
back down out of the rotation. I would also think
it might mean they may do more dime and they'll
keep wooling in and they'll do six defensive backs. We've
talked a lot about Dame with McDonald this week. He
hasn't been doing it as much until recently when they
got all the guys, but he didn't have six defensive
backs he felt was worth we're worth playing. At the
(31:52):
same time, well, now he's starting to get him all back,
and the way Tyo Cotta is playing, he's not quite
been a one for one swap of love. But you
the safety in the back is not quite as anything
to do with Nickel and Dime. You're talking about your
inside slock cornerbacks. I would think, even though Pritchett had
them remarkable play. I wrote about that at the News
(32:12):
Tribute this morning about Pritchett's breakup in the end zone.
Pass pack up in the end zone had Leslie Fraser
going nuts about it. I think he's gonna move out
and Woolan becomes what whether what Neamia Pritchett was last week.
Speaker 4 (32:27):
I would think.
Speaker 8 (32:28):
I've been telling you they love Joe and they're not
about to bench him just because Woolan's had a couple
of good games and Pritchett had a great pass breakup.
Speaker 4 (32:35):
I'd expect Josh job will be starting on Sunday.
Speaker 7 (32:38):
Well, how do you envision the front seven holding up
against their Rams? I mean they run the ball. These
two teams are very similar, at least in nine games
into the season and and so you got they got
a couple guys, depending on the health of Devanta Adams
that you got to stop with your your dbs. But
the upfront you, I mean, you obviously are not going
to want to let Williams and company run all over
(33:00):
me either.
Speaker 1 (33:00):
So what's their plan of attack to shut that down?
Speaker 8 (33:03):
Well, let's update the listeners. DeVante Adams did practice yesterday
on a limited basis. He had the oblique issue that
he did not practice Wednesday. So a guy did not
practice Wednesday, practice limited on Thursday. Trending toward playing, Adams
leads the NFL and nine with nine touchdown receptions so
far this season. Kyen Williams still the guy. I mean,
he's averaging five and a half yards of carry. I'm
(33:26):
telling you McVeigh gets all the attention for throwing. It
starts with the run, and when this rams played the Seahawks,
it starts with running backs and tight ends, screen pass
dump offs, quick horizonal across the field, horizontal stuff.
Speaker 4 (33:44):
Kyen Williams and Tyler Higbe are.
Speaker 8 (33:45):
As big as this to me as DeVante Adams and
Puku Nakua. Because of the way that the Seahawks have
habitually been attacked on defense, and they've got Chenn and
Wos who now back full time playing run and pass
downs the markets long his back healthy. Leonard Williams is
having another Pro Bowl caliber season, and Byron Murphy has
been the breakout on that front seven with the sacks
(34:08):
and playing every more. As we said, had to play
more than fifty percent of the snaps that he barely
played last season, and he has. They to me, are
more equipped than they were this time last season. Murphy
is progress being foremost in that they're more equipped in
the front. Can they pressure Stafford? Stafford gets the ball
out Alter quick. He's like Aaron Rodgers, but better, and
(34:31):
he gets the ball so quickly he's strolling. Just two
interceptions this season. It's really tough to get to him.
The Can they at least get to Can they cover
sticky enough in the back that the front can get
to the pass rush put to the passer, And that's
what's happened so far this season. If McDonald can get
away with not blitzing, the Seahawks are in catbird seat defensively.
Speaker 4 (34:53):
In this game.
Speaker 8 (34:54):
I think he's going to blitz more than he normally
does because he's got even Worry and Witherspoon both at
his disposed in sub packages. I expect a lot of
Dikel and Diamond, a lot of blitzz out of it
with those two guys.
Speaker 1 (35:06):
Craig Bells with us are Seahawks Insider. You can follow
on that to g bel Seattle there on X and
of course the Newstribune dot com, where he provides a
complete and excellent coverage of the Seahawks all year long.
He's ours to interview most every day throughout the football
season here at seven five. You know, obviously, when you
face an NFL team, there's a very good chance you're
(35:27):
going to face somebody that used to be on your team,
and so certainly some trade secrets are going to be exchanged.
And it doesn't seem that NFL teams, you know, stay
awake at night worrying about that. That said, when you
have two players as good and cerebral and as involved
in active as Cooper Cup and Ernest Jones on this
(35:50):
team that played so recently against the Rams, what kind
of advantage, if any, could that possibly give the Seahawks
on Sunday, probably.
Speaker 8 (36:00):
In a thirty thousand foot global view, it helps but McVeigh,
those guys, they change from week to week, year to year.
They put a bunch of stuff in the training camp
that they haven't shown yet. All teams do. The Seahawks
have not shown a decent amount of their offensive defensive
playbooks yet. The Rams are going to see stuff on
Sunday they haven't seen yet. Cup and Jones are going
(36:22):
to see stuff from McVeigh that they haven't seen yet either.
So it's almost a wash. I want to say it's
almost psychological, but it's more than that. But Cup is
in particular sticking his head in the head coach's office
and saying, Hey, I know the Rams like to do
this on third down and when they're at this part
of the field is written mcveigh's tendancies are Chances are McDonald.
Speaker 4 (36:44):
Knows most of that already.
Speaker 8 (36:45):
The guy's a football nerd who just sits and just
loves that stuff. And we've asked him a couple times
this week McDonald about facing McVay, and of course he said, Wow,
that's my job is to have this team.
Speaker 4 (36:58):
Ready to play every week. Doesn't matter who the opponent is.
I gotta have it. Coaches and players, this.
Speaker 8 (37:04):
Matters to him, I know, as in the weeds as
he is about schematics and about being cutting edge and
innovative and one step ahead of the offensive guy. This
is the standard Kyle Shanahan and McVeigh. But McVeigh most
recently has the Super Bowl ring. This is the standard again,
this is why the Seahawks hired him to beat this
(37:25):
guy this week. Means it's way more to him than
he will ever let on. And then that's the intriguing
game within the game we've been talking about all week.
It's it's fascinating, it really is. Yeah, it's kind of crazy.
This game is a one oh five regional Fox prodcast
with the number two team. This should be primetime best
game of the weekend. This is this is really good stuff.
Speaker 1 (37:45):
That's good. I mean, Kan City Denver is a great game,
but this one takes the cake right here. All right,
So what's your key to the victory? How's it going
to go down on Sunday?
Speaker 8 (37:56):
Well, I'm just writing that story for thenewstribute dot com
this morning.
Speaker 4 (38:00):
Sam Darnald is he human in that? Is he really?
Speaker 8 (38:05):
Is he going to come out and say I need
to prove myself to myself against this team that just
bludgeon me to end my Vikings tenure last January.
Speaker 4 (38:14):
It's only been ten months. The last time he's been
on that field.
Speaker 8 (38:16):
He got stucked nine times and was just a hot
mess and the Vikings went from fourteen to two to
out of the playoffs in one night.
Speaker 4 (38:26):
Is donald truly what he says and what he's shown
so far?
Speaker 8 (38:29):
This poised, unflappable and every game is saying nothing fazes
me guy, or is he going to be a little
extra and forcing things a little bit.
Speaker 4 (38:39):
More to show these guys don't have me.
Speaker 8 (38:43):
He's got to play within himself and not force things.
He's got to get rid of the ball and be
willing to just throw the chuck the ball out of
bounds when he's getting pressured if they get to him.
The rams are susceptible in the secondary. When you talk
to the LA people down there, Yeah, we've had a
great scene, but man, are past defense. If we don't
get to the quarterback. We've had a hard time covering.
(39:04):
And you look at the numbers there.
Speaker 4 (39:06):
I think it's eighteenth in the league and pass defense.
Speaker 8 (39:09):
If the Seahawks with Gray's Abel and friends can keep
mc donald from being rushed and being pressured into making
choices before he wants to. The Seahawks have big plays
coming in this Ram secondary and I'm talking the debut
of number twenty two. I know he played last week,
but Rashid Shaheed to me is an untalked about heat
(39:30):
of this game. They're gonna send Shaheed deep center post
routes and go routes to see if the Rams will
bite or if they're going to really keep their safety
over the top against Smith and Jig. But if they do,
look for Shaheed to have a one hundred yard receiving game.
Speaker 4 (39:45):
If they do go back to shading for the deep.
Speaker 8 (39:48):
Post and guarding against Shaheed speed, look for Smith and Jig.
But to have one hundred yard receiving game, that to
me is another game within the game. It's really intriguing
to me. But the OLDW with Timmy thing at center,
big deal. The Rams are gonna send a lot of
a gap pressure and really challenge OLW with Timmy. We'll
see how that part of it holds up for Seattle.
(40:09):
If that part fails, the whole offense will fail.
Speaker 1 (40:12):
Say Travels, We'll talk to you on Monday. Should be fun, Yeah,
enjoy the weekend.
Speaker 4 (40:16):
I'll talk to you Monday.
Speaker 1 (40:17):
Thank you, Greg Bell, our Seahawks insider again. Follow me
at g bel Seattle and Thenewstribune dot com. He'll have
those keys written out for you a little bit later
on today, and I would imagine within the hour there
at the Newstribune dot Com for our part. His segment
brought to you by Dellacado Family Wines. They offer a
portfolio of premium wines from a selection of the most
desirable vineyards from notable wine growing regions in California, Germany,
(40:42):

six thousand acres of estate vineyards in California's Napa, Low Die,
Monterey and Sonoma regions to craft wines that express the
diversity of these appellations. All right, coming up next Factor
Fiction at seven thirty five, I've Ashley's picked today and
we'll hear from Rick neweiswell before the college football weekend
(41:04):
gets underway. Right here at Sports Radio ninety three point
three KJRFM.
Speaker 2 (41:08):
It's time for THEO the best twelve minutes of eight
minutes of radio. I'm brought to you by the Rich
Complex flavor of Pendleton whiskey weather.
Speaker 1 (41:19):
But please break responsibly, all right, Friday, ohoe time here
on check them back in the morning. Sports Radio ninety
three point three KJR FM Here on a football Friday.
We've got a lot to get to here this segment,
and yes, we will get to a lot of football.
(41:40):
As a matter of fact, I'm kind of touching a
little bit flattered. I'm kind of excited. I mean, I
was a little worried that I went to over the
top with draft miss, but now to find out my
coworkers are like, you have not gone far enough. I
don't think you've heard that correctly. Yeah, barely sufficient is
(42:00):
what I heard. So now I might just racing with
all sorts of IDs.
Speaker 4 (42:03):
This.
Speaker 1 (42:04):
I've never heard this before, but I think this is
called wish for hearing. Maybe I'll start next week. Maybe
it's not about doing more, just more of the year.
Speaker 3 (42:12):
Does that mean I get to play holiday music starting
next week?
Speaker 8 (42:15):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (42:15):
Okay, no, I'm in.
Speaker 1 (42:17):
Before Christmas, all right, But yes, before we get to
the football, we are going to lead with Major League Baseball.
Last night, finally we were going to learn whether or
not cal Raley was going to be named the American
League most valuable Player. We've known four months. It was
going to come down to either he or the centaur
(42:39):
known as Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees. Judge
with all of the numbers overall offensively cal with the
historic sixty homer season from a switch hitter who plays
behind the plate and certainly has a lot more on
his plate. So who was going to win the award?
It ultimately came down to Aaron Judge taking it. He
(43:02):
got seventeen of the thirty votes for first place. Both
of them got all of the first or second place votes,
but it's Aaron Judge who ends up being your most
Valuable player in any other year. Cal Raley is a
runaway winner in this category, but he admitted afterwards that
he lost to a really great candidate. Yeah, I mean,
(43:26):
did you know what was gonna happen? But you know,
obviously very well deserving. You know, he's a great player,
and you know it was the tyras. The tyras. Col
Raley man a few words. I will say this. I mean,
we've talked about this a lot. I don't think that
there was a bad decision to make because I think
both of these guys in any other year are running
(43:48):
away with the most value. They're not even having to
share votes. They're a unanimous choice. I'll tell you right now,
if it was Cal versus show A, Cal would I
think get every single vote because the discrepancy that showed
offensively did versus what Cal did wasn't nearly as great.
And Showay as a pitcher pretty much miss pitched two
or three innings every game, and so I think Cal
(44:11):
would have beaten show Ay. Maybe not unanimous, but in
any normal year he's a unanimous runaway winner. Unfortunately they
had to go up against one another here.
Speaker 7 (44:20):
In this American League race. Yeah, I think they got
it wrong. And it's not taken away from judge. I
just think that there's there's things that you just can't
quantify that were missed by unfortunately three too many people.
I mean, you know, obviously there's they're all looking into
it and trying to make the right decision, and wherever
(44:41):
they came, that's their opinion. It's just unfortunate that seventeen
of them had the wrong opinion.
Speaker 8 (44:46):
And so.
Speaker 1 (44:49):
You're entitled to your opinion, but you're wrong.
Speaker 5 (44:51):
Yeah, I just think it's as I said, earlier, the
idea that the complete package that Cal has to work
with every single day is more difficult, more of a
test for him every single day than what Aaron Judge
had to do. And I think more of that should
have been accounted for. I know it doesn't have just
an easy stat to look at in a column.
Speaker 3 (45:14):
But it should have been weighed as important as the
rest of it.
Speaker 1 (45:19):
This is the heart of this conversation and this debate.
Every single person, I promise you, that voted for this
took the vote seriously. They have done a job of
meeting out the people that weren't taking it seriously. So
everybody took it seriously, and everybody did. Factor in everything
else that's on the plate for Cal Raley versus everything
(45:41):
else that's on the plate for Aaron Judge. And the
gap certainly favored Col considerably, but the gap offensively the
numbers overall numbers, not just home runs and RBI also
was a considerable gap. I mean it was two hundred
points of ops. I mean that's a two hundred point
point ops difference between Julio Rodriguez and Miles master Bony
(46:03):
for goodness sake, and think about that. Stark contrast of player.
So we believe that that gap, that Col's gap overlaps
Aaron Judge's offensive gap. That's what we believe, and I
think we're right. But seventeen out of thirty voters didn't
(46:25):
think it made up the difference in the offensive gap.
That's it. That's that's the that's the bottom line to
this vote.
Speaker 7 (46:31):
Yeah, yeah, And I guess my bottom line that I
will die on this hill is they don't They're wrong.
Speaker 1 (46:37):
They just don't know what they're talking about.
Speaker 7 (46:38):
They don't they as while I know that they did
their due diligence and they take it seriously, they don't
know how big of a difference that is.
Speaker 1 (46:48):
It's not that they didn't recognize it.
Speaker 7 (46:50):
I guarantee if you asked any one of them, is
there a difference between what Col brings to the table
when he's on the other side when they're doing playing defense,
is they're oh, substantial? And then yet seventeen of them
said not enough to overcome the substantial difference, which I
automatically and anybody with the brain would say, yeah, there's
a substantial difference in the offensive numbers outside of the
(47:11):
RBIs and home runs. And yet it's just it's just
to me, it's not even a contest between the two.
I mean, I understand that it's close because of how
spectacular judges offensive numbers were, but it's just I sit
and think about all that, Like what Ashley's talking about,
and you've brought up many times while we've been talking
about it all years, since this conversation started halfway through
(47:32):
the year, it just is it's it hails in comparison
in my opinion, just considering all of the things that
he does and the beating that he takes to.
Speaker 1 (47:41):
Be able to put up these numbers, and it's historic.
Speaker 5 (47:43):
Yeah, And that's that is the thing, right there, is
that everybody, even in the priest show leading up to
the awards, kept referring to cal season as an his
historic season.
Speaker 3 (47:54):
This is historic, look at all the things he accomplished.
Speaker 5 (47:57):
And then it's like an MLB even put out look
all listed all of the things on their Twitter account
that Cal accomplished in his historic season, but he still
didn't win.
Speaker 1 (48:07):
Yeah, yeah, they got it wrong. Yeah, Cal and Julio
were both named All MLB last night as well. Yeah,
that's right. Julio first team All Major League Baseball last night.
Brian wu Andre's Muno's name to the second team as well.
So certainly Cal Raley had it was the year of Cal.
(48:28):
I know he didn't end up winning the Most Valuable Player.
I know he didn't end up getting to the World Series,
but man, if he can top that season, wow, we're lucky.
But well, wow, I issue you a challenge. Caleb Raleigh
the third, Well, good luck to it, Judges.
Speaker 7 (48:48):
Judges topped the season that he just won MVP with
like two out of the three years prior to this,
So I mean, it's he's going to be this guy.
And I wouldn't have wanted Cal to get it because
somebody thought, well, this is his best chance it ever
getting one. I just think playing and simple, he had
a better year in the entirety, and yet they gave
it to Judge, and Judges are deserving candidate.
Speaker 1 (49:10):
There's no doubt about it. He's unbelievable. Yeah, they both
were phenomenal, but Cal was better. Yep, Seahawks Rams play
on Sunday. Man, what a game this is. I mean,
obviously the Cal Rawley vote being the number one story
must be quite the story. If we're not leading on
a football Friday was seven and two versus seven and
(49:32):
two for first place in the division. Greg Bell was
with us one hour ago and he gave us his
key to the game.
Speaker 8 (49:39):
Sam Darnold, is he human in that? Is he going
to come out and say I need to prove myself
to myself against this team that just bludgeon me to
end my Viking's tenure last January. It's only been ten
months the last time he's been on that field. He
got sacked nine times and was just a hot mess
and the Vikings went from four team and two out
(50:01):
of the playoffs and one night. Is Donald truly what
he says and what he's shown so far? This poised,
unflappable and every game is saying nothing phases me guy.
Or is he going to be a little extra and
forcing things a little bit more to show these guys
don't have me. He's got to play within himself and
(50:22):
not force things. He's got to get rid of the
ball and be willing to just throw the chuck the
ball out of bounds and getting pressured if they get
to him. The Rams are susceptible in the secondary. If
the Seahawks with Gray's Abel and friends can keep mc
donald from being rushed and being pressured into making choices
before he wants to. The Seahawks have big plays coming
(50:45):
in this ram secondary.
Speaker 1 (50:47):
How close was that to your key? Close?
Speaker 6 (50:51):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (50:51):
Close?
Speaker 7 (50:54):
Yeah I did, Greg. We'll copy in my papers. Rise
on your own paper, guy. I mean, mine's just really
that how quick you got to make those decisions and
yet you it's such a double head sword because you
make it too terribly quick, and you're we're going to
be talking about on Monday that he was forcing balls
into places and yet if he holds on to it,
holds on to it too long, then that's another mistake
(51:15):
that you could make.
Speaker 1 (51:16):
What a match, my goodness, What a fun Sunday we
got in store for us. Kickoff is going to be
at one o'clock. And uh, and I think it is
worth noting. I mean this, as Hugh pointed out yesterday
in the roundtable, as big a game as this is,
it's still not like some sort of make or breakdown.
We can still come back and win the division with
(51:37):
a loss. They can still come back and win the
division with a loss. You can they Either one of
these teams with a loss could end up with a
number one seed. For goodness sake, in the entire NFC playoffs.
So but but for game number ten of the year,
this is about as big a game number ten of
the year as the Seahawks have ever played.
Speaker 5 (51:55):
I saw in the four letters they said, could the
winner of this game automatically jumped to be the Super
Bowl favorite?
Speaker 1 (52:03):
I think they will.
Speaker 6 (52:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (52:04):
I think right now they're number one and two in
the power rankings, right yeah, stay so yeah, whoever wins
is gonna go to number one, that's for sure. But
Seahawks should have Ernest Jones, should have Cooper Cup, should
have Gray Zabel, even though he's popped up on the
injury report. Greg even told us an hour ago they
might even have Josh Job available to add to that
depth in the secondary. Meanwhile, DeVante Adams did practice for
(52:27):
the Rams but was limited yesterday. We'll talk more about
it coming up later this hour and with Hugh and
Coach in the nine o'clock hour. Thursday Night Football last
night featured a really crappy matchup.
Speaker 11 (52:41):
This s turned out to be a solid drive for
the Patriots under eight minutes to play in the third quarter,
pro set in the backfield with digs back, there may.
Speaker 1 (52:48):
Out of the gun, looks left, Pro's left for the
back of the hand zone.
Speaker 10 (52:51):
Henderson kept us beat in bouts his third store of
the Knights a seven yard touchdown passed by Drake Man
and the Patriots go on top twenty to seven with
seven forty six to play here in the third quarter.
Speaker 1 (53:06):
Thank you Wes wood one for that highlight that we
could play this morning. Uh, you know, that was like
the first time I got to sit down and like
watch an entire Drake May game and find out what
the hype was all about. And do you know who?
He reminded me of Sam Darnold. Oh, play's exactly that way.
Really yeah, Like accurate throws and really good with ball
fakes and getting rid of the football. And he's kind
(53:29):
of climbed to the top of the MVP conversation as
well in just his second year. It was supposed to
be a mismatch, and eventually it did prove to be.
After allowing the Jets to score on the opening drive
of the game, the Patriots defense stiffened. Treveon Henderson scored
three touchdowns and route to a twenty seven to fourteen win.
The Pats the first team to nine wins this season. Meanwhile,
(53:51):
the two and eight Jets, believe it or not, had
their two game winning streaks.
Speaker 3 (53:55):
Now that's all right, we're still on our We've still
got five.
Speaker 1 (53:58):
Possible holding out for your five and a half.
Speaker 3 (54:01):
I just need to get them to the number.
Speaker 1 (54:03):
I don't think you're going to get there. Yeah, probably, Yeah,
I think you're gonna fail. What do you think those uniforms?
Speaker 3 (54:08):
Okay, so I was gonna say those.
Speaker 1 (54:10):
I liked them. I liked them.
Speaker 3 (54:11):
But here's the one problem.
Speaker 5 (54:12):
It kept making me think of the Colts uniforms, just
a more muted Colt uniform, and so I was getting
the little thrown off.
Speaker 3 (54:18):
But I liked I liked them. I liked the I
liked the helmets, the white helmet.
Speaker 1 (54:22):
They were very similar to the Buffalo altar turnout.
Speaker 3 (54:25):
Yeah there's more all white too.
Speaker 1 (54:27):
I think there's just a little lighter. Oh okay, they
looked exactly like.
Speaker 7 (54:31):
The Hermston Bulldogs powder puff uniforms. Nice, you guys have
powder puff in Illinois?
Speaker 1 (54:37):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (54:37):
Girls, we did think the girls played a football game
before dry homecoming week, So I take my unis. They
were very pretty back in nineteen ninety three and they
looked pretty yesterday too.
Speaker 1 (54:49):
Vintage NFL Week number eleven will start at six thirty Sunday.
It'll be Washington taking on Miami. That's the last game
being played in Europe this seas, Thank goodness. The early
game Tampa Bay Buffalo at ten o'clock is going to
be a terrific one. If there's one person listening that
doesn't want to watch Seahawks rams, there is a good
(55:11):
alternative Chiefs and Broncos. And then Sunday night it will
be Detroit at Philadelphia. So a great, great slate coming
up on Sunday. College football Huskies are gonna host the
Purdue boiler Makers the Fighting Cliff Averrils on Saturday at
four o'clock. Cam Cleland was on with US Wednesday. I
(55:31):
asked him whether this one's in the bag.
Speaker 11 (55:33):
We should worry about every game from here on out, gentlemen,
I don't make guarantees.
Speaker 4 (55:37):
At any point.
Speaker 11 (55:38):
I think Purdy's got some good players. I certainly have
watched the film. They are two and eight, They've been
in some situations. They have a couple of really good athletes.
They have to go on the road and play in
Husky Stadium. I would like to see an angry Husky
football team. But then I don't know what Jonah Coleman
is going to look like. But Alda Muhammad ran very well.
You don't know what Denzel's gonna look like. So that
(55:59):
means your wide receiver room is way down. Okay, if
he's done it. I mean we were talking way down
the offensive line. What's that going to look like? All
in retrospect, though, our defense played very well, so it
did some very very good things. Coach Walter's got these guys.
They look healthy. The concern now is how much can
Demond take a game over and and be competitive versus
(56:24):
these last three games, because you got to win at home,
you got to go on the road, and then you
have your biggest game of the year against a very
very very good Oregon team.
Speaker 1 (56:32):
Four pm. Kickoff right here at Sports Radio ninety three
point three KJARFM. The Hanks will get it started at noon,
and you need to be checking out the Hanks every week.
Koog's are going to host Louisiana Tech the Fighting Terry
Bradshaw's at seven o'clock tomorrow night. Meanwhile, the biggest games
in college football this week in number nine, Notre Dame
at number twenty two, pit Go Pit number eleven, Oklahoma
(56:54):
at number four, Alabama, and number ten Texas at number five.
George will provide a full Big Ten preview of the
weekend coming up at eight forty five College basketball. We've
got the Apple Cup of the Hardwood going down tonight
and the Huskies are off to a two and one start.
(57:15):
The Cougs are off to a one and two start
with losses to Idaho and Davidson. But you know about
this rivalry. You can't let a coog in the car.
There's a cam cougar in the car. I'll lose a
cougar in the car I put it in there. You
got to learn to drive with the fear. And there
ain't nothing more damn frightened than driving with a live
cougar in the car. Where'd you get that thing? I
(57:37):
trapped it, been keeping it in my bathroom at the motel,
feeding an old pizza. Now picking that car you're making,
I'm not getting in that car. Hey, listen to me.
If you're calm, that wondrous big cat will be calm too.
But if you're scared, that beautiful death machine will do
what God made it to do, namely each you with
a smile on his face. God, he's just following me
(58:00):
wherever I go. Well, just looking at you. So you're saying,
if I just calm down, a cougar will be Okay,
you got it. Yeah, I think the dogs will be
calm tonight.
Speaker 3 (58:08):
Yeah, you just gotta be calm.
Speaker 1 (58:09):
I think they'll be calm tonight. I don't think they're
gonna worry about having a koog in the car now.
Zag's at Arizona State tonight at eight o'clock as well.
The Kraken and the JITs played last night at Climate
Pledge Arena, and the Jets were no match. Matty Beaneers
back to marshmen in the circle? What's a hip check
in the the rest of the cock dog gun?
Speaker 9 (58:39):
Paddy Vaneers topple the right circle.
Speaker 1 (58:41):
He fights every.
Speaker 9 (58:43):
Down, roll tike tag goal, Let's have t what's the
cracking on top by.
Speaker 1 (58:48):
A four to three score. Captain scored two goals. Captain's
got to say stuff. Yeah, Vin's Dunn also had a
goal and two assists. That's Everett fits you on the
call last night right here on the flagship car as
the Crack and do win five to three how about
this is just an oddity. Winnipeg has been involved in
one overtime game this season. Early in the season, right
(59:09):
Cracking had been involved in eight. Already, we've played a
lot more hockey. I don't think that's a good thing
for the team. I played that much more hockey than
everybody else by the end of the year.
Speaker 3 (59:19):
I would hope they balance it out throughout the season.
Speaker 1 (59:21):
Lambert might just have to say, we'll just take the
point we don't want to play anymore.
Speaker 3 (59:24):
Yeah, overtime games.
Speaker 1 (59:27):
Tomorrow night, the baby Face Sharks will be taking on
the crack and at seven o'clock Climate Pledge Arena. The
last time we've faced those whiskerless youngsters, they whipped our
butts six to one, and so we got to score
to settle tomorrow night at Climate Pledge Arena. And finally,
I know millions have been wondering, well it's.
Speaker 3 (59:51):
Here, Stove Stove What a kind of name is that?
Speaker 1 (59:57):
Well, it's the name of the hottest offseason Berner's podcast
we do around there. Andrews Hurst and I have our
first episode of Stove Out. It's fresh out the oven,
so if you want to check it out, you can
do so you can find it at ninety three to
three kjar dot com. Look under the podcast section. We're
just getting started with the off season, and so Anders
(01:00:19):
and I just getting started breaking it down, all right.
Coming up next here on the radio program, more on
Seahawks Rams, more on McDonald versus McVeigh, and this incredible
micmatch up on Mix Sunday Sports Radio ninety three point
three MICKKJR FM. Part of our relentless coverage of the NFL.
Speaker 2 (01:00:39):
Off your home for the twelfth Man Free Sents Football Friday.
Speaker 1 (01:00:45):
This crowd is going nuts sponsored by Tito's Handmade Vodka.
Speaker 2 (01:00:49):
Crowd sponsor of the Seahawks, distilled and bottles by Fifth
Generation eight Austin, Texans, forty percent alcohol.
Speaker 1 (01:00:56):
My ball, you get a saber Responsibly.
Speaker 2 (01:00:58):
Football Friday is on with Chuck and Buck on Sports
Radio ninety three point three k j R FM.
Speaker 1 (01:01:07):
Alright, maybe I've just been getting too fired up for
this game on Sunday. Maybe I need to take it
down a notch, pretty run on the middle game on
Sunday and Los Angeles. A couple of good coaches, I guess,
a couple of quarterbacks that are kind of hot. I
suppose it's time to break it down with our QB one.
Hugh Millen is with us here on Chuck and Buck
(01:01:28):
in the morning for some x's and o's. Damn that, Hugh,
this is awesome. Let's go. This is awesome. I can't wait.
Speaker 12 (01:01:35):
Look, it's just a you know, it's like a mid
term in a college class where you know, grades pretty high.
It's not as high as the final, but it does
give you pause to say, Okay, where am I at this?
Speaker 1 (01:01:48):
And so I can't wait.
Speaker 12 (01:01:51):
You know, if if Ashley will give the permission, if
I can be a little bit stereotypically sexist boy, but
only with Ashley's permission.
Speaker 1 (01:02:05):
Actually, are we good with that? Just for a moment?
Can I can I delve into those waters like that? Okay?
Speaker 12 (01:02:12):
Well, we're gonna have some friends over and and I
think like the dudes are gonna be just looking at
the matchup things, this incredible matchup between Mike McDonald and
Sean McVay. Right, the chicks who are more drawn to
the personal stories are gonna be looking at Sam Donald.
(01:02:33):
Sam Donald is the number one UH person involved in
this game in my opinion, because if if Matthew Stafford
has a bad game, nobody's gonna you know, nobody's gonna
make any referendums on Matthew Stafford if he has a
bad game. Even if Mike McDonald, you know, if the
defense kind of gets lits up, lit up, people aren't
gonna say, well, Mike McDonald forgot how to coach, you know.
(01:02:56):
But if Sam Donald has a poor game, there's just
a lot more riding on it for him than anybody
else involved. Because of the nature of the perceived collapse
by him last year. He's you know, he's getting hounded
by the local media, the national media, the pre production
(01:03:16):
meetings that are taking place today, they'll be asking about it.
So he's gonna be reminded about that nine sack performance
and and and the end of the season for the
Vikings last year. So I just think there's a human
interest side with Sam Darnold that exceeds all others based
on you know, just hey, this is one of the
reasons we love sports. This is why in the Olympics,
(01:03:39):
you know, when when it comes down to the team
Olympics and and one of those gals got to sprint
down the uh and do like nine tumbles and five somersaults,
in the air and she's got to land it, and
just the pressure and maybe you don't even know what
gymnastic is like me, but you know there's pressure and
(01:04:00):
to watch that little gal just stick that landy, you
get chills, you know, because of that's what sports is.
And so Sam Donald has got some of that going
on this Sunday. And so in an event, you know,
there's just wonderful storylines. That's a big one, not just
for the chicks, the dudes will be taken note of
that as well.
Speaker 1 (01:04:20):
Well. That's see. That's a little bit interesting because I
kind of mocked that, Like ESPN had this headline across
the front screen saying what's at stake for Sam Donald?
I kind of mocked it earlier in the show. My
thought was, I don't think there's anything at steak for
Sam Donald. If he wins their a game up in
the standings, if he loses there a game down in
the standings, I don't think we get to the end
(01:04:42):
of this and the narrative becomes, oh, Sam Donald might
not be able to beat the Rams. I just don't
think it goes there. But you know, maybe I'm wrong,
Maybe maybe it is bigger than I was giving it
credit for. Well, now we're getting the hypothetical.
Speaker 12 (01:04:56):
Okay, in that scenario, if he were to have a
bad game, that we know that people know that all
the talking heads on Monday are going to be ripping him,
then my my response would be, in that scenario, how
how tough is he mentally?
Speaker 1 (01:05:08):
That's just as simple as that.
Speaker 6 (01:05:10):
Uh.
Speaker 12 (01:05:10):
You know, I can remember the the uh, the pep
talks we used to get from Jimmy Johnson when I
was with the Cowboys. He majored in uh, industrial psychology.
I don't know what the industrial tag to that is,
but but he was. He was very good in in
how to present his messaging and he and he just
just say, hey, emotionally, we are not a roller coaster.
(01:05:31):
We are not up and down you know at the
uh you know, at the whims of whatever people say
about us. We are either mentally tough or we're not.
And you know, a major challenge. So I, you know,
I think that that uh, you know, the Jimmy Johnson
would have uh component would have to be present for
Sam Darnold in the event that he were to have
a poor game. Obviously, we're looking for all the reasons
(01:05:54):
why he won't, but I think that he would be
uniquely challenged in ways that the other principles in this
game are not.
Speaker 7 (01:06:03):
Yeah, do you is there anything in particular that your
mind goes to when it comes to divisional games? It
always seems like they're tougher, right, you play them twice
a year. I don't know if you draft necessarily trying
to combat your division foes, but your main goal is
to win the division, and so you got to go
through those guys.
Speaker 1 (01:06:18):
You just the familiarity with it.
Speaker 7 (01:06:20):
What is it in particular that that you think, especially
going into like this week for example, two good teams
buying for that number one spot that goes into divisional
matchups that make them tougher, And why it is like that?
Speaker 12 (01:06:34):
Well, I think sometimes there are divisional games where you
just don't kind of like the other team. I know,
when I'll reference Jimmy Johnson again, he hated the Eagles,
and I remember he comes out at.
Speaker 4 (01:06:47):
The end of the game.
Speaker 12 (01:06:48):
We're beating you know, Troitman's the quarterback obviously, and he
comes over the sideline and Jimmy says, hey, I want
you to take We've got the We're up by two touchdowns.
Is I want you to take three knees and on
fourth down, we're gonna start to take a knee and
then throw it deep and and and Troy is like,
he kind of looks at me, rolls like what. So
(01:07:10):
he goes out and you can see him. He goes
up on first down and and by the way, the
play by play can back this up. Uh if you
look at the play by play for that game. Uh,
he goes up and you can see he's talking to
the Eagles. And so so he takes a knee on
first down, huddle, taking THEE on second, taking THEE on third.
Then on fourth down he throws a pass, but not
(01:07:31):
up the sideline like Jimmy had told him to do.
He throws a coral route, which which with the receiver
coming back to the line of scrimmage. Uh and uh
to Alvin Harper get a nice game, but Alvin's tackled
and blah blah blah and and so the so the
game's over and and Troy's walking by, and I'm like,
is Jimmy gonna get mad at him for not throwing
(01:07:54):
the go route. Well, Jimmy Johnson had the sense to,
uh to to not say anything and so I I said,
what what have you said to the Eagles at the
line of scrimmage? He said, I told them, I said, listen,
this is Troy at the line of scrimmage talking to
the Eagle defense. We're gonna take a knee on first
and second and third down, but I'm gonna throw it
(01:08:16):
on fourth down, he warned them. And so he said,
he goes, I'm not getting involved with uh. You know,
Jimmy's you know, vendettas he is. You know these we
got to play these guys twice a year.
Speaker 1 (01:08:27):
You know, I'm getting smacked.
Speaker 12 (01:08:29):
And that had stemmed from a time when Buddy Ryan
was the quarterback when he had excuse me, the coach obviously,
and he had done that. He had Randall cunning and
am take a few knees and then throw a bomb.
Uh in that possession, which is is just breaks all
conventions of you know, the rules. I mean, Bucky in baseball,
I mean what I like, if this was baseball, Jimmy
(01:08:52):
Johnson or Buddy Buddy Ryan should get a you know,
a fastball in the ninety nine miles an hour in
the lung, you know, like like we'll self polaf that crowd,
you know, so at any event, there's a lot to
talk about the SI game. Sorry for that that diversion,
but but but the point is with with the UH,
(01:09:13):
with with the divisional games, sometimes it's heated. I don't
get the sense that that there's that hatred here. I
think there's just respect for two great teams.
Speaker 1 (01:09:20):
Here melanis with It's X's and O's Every Friday, brought
to you by Frost Brewed Corps like choose Chill. You
know the mountain turns blue at forty two degrees. Yeah,
there are a lot of things to discuss with this matchup,
especially this coaching matchup, if I can be specific, I'm curious,
and I know you've given it thought how McVeigh would
(01:09:43):
use Nikua and Adams and how McDonald would try to
defend them against you know, with the weapon of em
and Warri and possibly having all of their corners at
their disposal. We're hearing Job might end up playing this weekend.
So that matchup in articular, those two special smart physical
(01:10:03):
receivers against the Seahawk secondary. Yeah, okay, so both for
Puka Nikua uh, he has seventy nine targets. Davante Adams
seventy eight. Then you go all the way down to
Kiro and Williams the running back at twenty nine. All right,
so they're and Tyler Higbee at twenty eight. So those
two receivers are the dudes, right, and both of them
(01:10:25):
they have by far the most amount of yards on
in routes. Nicoua one hundred and sixty five yards on
in breaking routes. Remember that when you watching the game,
Davante Adams one hundred and fifty three, that's about fifty
percent or more next to the closest. And then the
other one is just.
Speaker 12 (01:10:42):
The hits routes, Nicula just going up five yards stopping
and then it's like, okay, he's really strong, you got
you gotta tackle. But on those in breaking routes, it
makes sense because they like to have squeezed formations. So
think of Nicua and DeVante Adams close relatively close, not
by out by the sideline, but closer to the ball
(01:11:03):
that is inside what's called the divider for the corner,
where the corner says, well, if you get tight enough,
and it depends on what hashy are middle of the
field and what happens. So I'm not going to give
in the nuances of the divider, but basically the corners.
Then they say, well, I'm going to be an outside
leverage because you're so tight to the ball. Well, when
you're an outside leverage, you're susceptible to the inbreaking route.
(01:11:24):
Now there's a component to that that all ties together.
All these things that I'm discussing are all tied together schematically, because.
Speaker 1 (01:11:32):
After all, this.
Speaker 12 (01:11:35):
Segment called x's and o's. So when you look at
Matthew Stafford's splits, there are seven coverages that and I'm
not going to go into all there's seven coverages where
he has at least five dropbacks. Okay, in all seven
of those coverages, his passer rating is over one hundred
except for one it's called Cover four, and his passer
(01:11:58):
rating is only fifty eight point eight. In fact, out
of thirty three qualifying quarterbacks, Sam Darnold is dead. Excuse me,
Matthew Stafford is dead last thirty three out of thirty
three in against Cover four. And so I went and
watched the tape I was able to filter. I watched
the coach's copy tape of Cover four. What's what's the
(01:12:21):
problem with him? What Cover four is you got the
two say there's four deep, as the name implies, there's
only three guys underneath. The three guys underneath, I'm close
to the line of scrimmers. They have to play man
concepts within his own because there's only three guys underneath.
You can't just drop to a spot because the holes
will be too big, So you're kind of playing man underneath.
But on all those inbreaking routes, what did I say
(01:12:43):
that top UH routes were by Niku and Adams, they're
in breaking routes. Well, if you have the two safety
sitting there robbing on those in breaking routes, you see
Stafford hold.
Speaker 1 (01:12:55):
The ball and what have you.
Speaker 12 (01:12:56):
So now they say, okay, do Seattle play UH cover? Well,
they they have played at fourteen percent of the time,
which is sixth that's sixteenth in the league. So they're
dead averaging their their frequency. Unfortunately for Seattle, that's been
their worst coverage by passer rating. So Mike, you know,
you know, this is the type of things that happened
(01:13:18):
during the week where you know, at eleven o'clock at night,
when Mike McDonald's got a you know, a toddler at home,
he's still in the building and he's asking questions like this, Hey,
how much cover forward?
Speaker 1 (01:13:29):
How do we feel about this?
Speaker 12 (01:13:30):
And if we played dime and so so, if we
played dime in a longer yardist situation, we can get
we can get even worry on on one side. And
as they said, underneath coverage, he's got to you gotta
kind of play man concerts within his own I can
get Witherspoon, Okay, I love that matchup. Now I can
get Josh Job and I can get Reek Woolen as
(01:13:53):
my corners. And then I wish I had Julian Love.
But Tyocott has been playing great and Kobe Bryant's just
been solid as hell. And so now we can get
into a cover four and we got dudes everywhere, and
hopefully Earn Stones. He'd be the mic in that situation,
and and you know, you'd have what's called the number
three receiver counting outside in on the three receiver side,
so he's got to be in covered, so that knee
(01:14:14):
would be a question. But all of this stuff is
is kind of you know, stuff that you wonder, but
that would be a fact. You asked me how you
might defend Matthew Stafford. That's something that's really pivotal based
on those tendencies.
Speaker 7 (01:14:30):
Hugh Tory Horton didn't practice yesterday, so he's presumably, I
would think probably out. Is this a week where you
think they'll they'll implement rashid shaheat and could he be
a factor in it maybe going deep or does he
at least take the top off to where it opens
up the guys underneath.
Speaker 12 (01:14:47):
Great question for me to give an answer would be
just talking out of my ass because we haven't seen
Shaheed other than a in a blowout where you know
it's twenty one nothing in the first quarter, So we
don't We didn't know how how how we don't. I
don't know the cohesion that he's established with with Darnold.
So here's what I saw from seat. They gave him
(01:15:09):
the ball on an end around. Uh, you can see
the bursts. He looks good. He's wearing those highlight pen
green shoes. Keep wearing those because you look faster, and
when you look faster, the defenders kind of go, WHOA,
what's this heat coming out of me? They get out
of their back pedal. That that declares for the defense.
So I like that it's not just style. And and
(01:15:30):
then now presumably he may have to take on a
bigger role. I don't think he's you know, when you
consider his closing ability on deep balls, the ability to
actually track and catch the ball, He's not He's not
at jsn's level by a long shot, but he's faster,
and so if he gets by a guy, you know,
(01:15:51):
I don't think he's going to be as good catching
a contested ball, but if he has separation, throw it
to him and then kick a pat, let's do it.
Speaker 1 (01:15:58):
So I short answer, I don't don't really know. I
know his speed does stretch the defense.
Speaker 12 (01:16:03):
And it is a prominent and if you're playing man
and man, you better have a guy who's fast enough
or at least strong enough to jam him at the
line of scrimmage and impede his free access. I kind
of like the idea, like some dry ice in his
uniform so it looks like he is smoking down the field.
If you're saying it matters, like yeah, if you look faster,
(01:16:24):
like this guy's so fast he's smoking out of the back.
It works on a biplane in those air shows. Why
can't it work for seed man? It's like all of
a sudden, the DB's are going, WHOA, get out of
your back be bet'll let the snap of the ball.
Speaker 1 (01:16:38):
Well, I can't wait till Monday morning to break all
of this down with you. This is gonna be one
hell of a football game Sunday, mister Millan, Oh is it?
Speaker 4 (01:16:47):
I mean?
Speaker 12 (01:16:47):
And you know there's there's other matchups we didn't get to.
But I you know, I don't know if you guys
are biting with me on it sounds like you and
I don't quite agree on on what this means means
for darnold, you know what I got to mention this?
Can I please give me a time here because I
got these notes. I gotta get to this outside zone.
That's the Seahawks. We've heard all summer. Outside zone canine dude,
(01:17:12):
this guy is he He has five point five yards
per attempt on outside zone Zach Zach Sarvona only has
three point six. They're almost too two yards separating. I
know that we've been nursing your foot, and and and
Greg has been telling us like, hey, we're doing load management.
(01:17:34):
We got bringing an NBA experts to tell us the backup. No, canine,
you you are the you forget that.
Speaker 1 (01:17:43):
You gotta go.
Speaker 12 (01:17:44):
It's time to go. You gotta get hard in the paint.
When you're going inside against those dime personnel groupings by
the Rams because they're number one in the NFL and dime,
you gotta go hard. And if you're getting an outside zone,
you gotta keep playing. The PFF ranks ranks Canine as
number two when just by great but just their their
(01:18:07):
subjective these number two in the outside zone. That's the
Seahawks bread and butter is the outside zone. He's two
yards ahead of Charbonnet Kanine. Don't go out and bounce,
you know, fight for every yard, show the physicality, like like,
I'm tired of this guy's, you know, one of the
top twelve most talented guys on the football field. He's
(01:18:27):
got to show up and I don't want to hear
about load manager. Grab that outside zone and go run
somebody over.
Speaker 1 (01:18:33):
Yeah, love it all right, Thanks Sarah, We appreciate it.

Speaker 5 (01:19:12):
Hi.
Speaker 1 (01:19:12):
Yes, coach on right every Friday at this time. Good morning, coach,
Good morning guys.
Speaker 4 (01:19:17):
How's it going?
Speaker 1 (01:19:18):
You excited for your Sunday? You excited for this game?
Speaker 4 (01:19:21):
You know what I am?
Speaker 6 (01:19:23):
Now, we watched some games this year that have been
kind of over at halftime or not so exciting. This
one promises to be special.
Speaker 1 (01:19:33):
I think, what do you do as a coach? I mean,
it's midway through the season. It's not make or break,
it's not like the division is on the line. Do
you just let the and trust that the players know
that this is a more important game than most of
the games, or do you start the week off by
reminding him I will I want this game, we need
(01:19:54):
this game. How do you approach this as a head coach?
Speaker 6 (01:19:58):
Well, for me, it's probably somewhere in between. I think
the players do know what's at stake. It's a great
rivalry anyway, just just just off the top. And but
then you have to they have to know how you
feel about this game as their coach, And so anytime
I came into a game like this, I would probably
(01:20:19):
start my Monday meetings talking about exactly that how important
this game is. You know, everyone, Look, every game is important.
I understand that, but this one, let's get after it.
Speaker 4 (01:20:30):
You know.
Speaker 6 (01:20:30):
It was just something like that. And then then I
don't think you have to dwell on it too much
during the week.
Speaker 7 (01:20:34):
Okay, intensity shouldn't be an issue, right, You're always going
whenever you go up against a division foe. But then
when you're tied at the top of the division and
it kind of pumps up a little bit. So how
do you how do you make sure that they understand
the importance and yet also keeping it calm enough to
where you're paying attention to the details and not shooting
yourself on the foot.
Speaker 6 (01:20:53):
Well, I think you do exactly what you just said.
Speaker 4 (01:20:56):
Buck.
Speaker 6 (01:20:56):
You you talk about the importance of the game, and
they have to see you're a change in you. You know,
I've talked to you guys before that whenever I played
against the team or coach against the team that I
previously had worked for, the players said I changed. I
was different that week. I didn't. I wasn't sure how
(01:21:17):
I was different, but they sensed it. So if the players,
if you can convey that to the players. Yet at
the same time, to your point, listen, we still have
to tackle, we still have to block, we have to
do the basic things, no turnovers, and just like any
other game. But they know and you've got to convey
that somehow.
Speaker 4 (01:21:36):
You know.
Speaker 1 (01:21:36):
Speaking of former teams, I asked us of Greg earlier,
I would get your perspective on this. I would imagine
most of the time when you had, like a player
who played on the team that you're getting ready to
go against, you probably didn't seek out their advice. That's
that would be my guess. You're probably not going to
go ask the punter, hey, what makes Matt Stafford tick
(01:21:59):
just because he used to play with him. But when
you've got two guys as sharp as Cooper Cup and
Ernest Jones, I mean the middle of their defense two
years ago and arguably their best player just two you know,
two years ago, and certainly both cerebral players. How much
do you tap into how much they know about their
former teammates?
Speaker 6 (01:22:21):
You absolutely tap in, particularly what guys like you mentioned,
you know, who are you know who know the game?
Who you can see that in their play for you?
And yeah, you talk to them. What bothers them?
Speaker 5 (01:22:33):
What?
Speaker 4 (01:22:33):
What?
Speaker 6 (01:22:33):
What helps them?
Speaker 8 (01:22:34):
What?
Speaker 4 (01:22:34):
What?
Speaker 6 (01:22:35):
What should we do in this situation? What can we
expect on offense in this situation? I remember one time
we had got Reggie White and Green Bay from Philly
or he was a free agent, and then so I
sat him down. We're we're playing the Eagles, and I
set him down at lunch and I said, hey, tell
me about it the defensive calls, you know, tell me
(01:22:57):
about how they call their defenses. And he well, they
call it blue or red. I said, okay, what is blooming?
Blue means I play the run. Red means I'm unleashed
and I can rush the passer. I said, is that it? Yeah,
(01:23:19):
that's pretty much it. So that was a lunchtime that
didn't didn't mount to much.
Speaker 4 (01:23:26):
But you know, so, but you would ask guys.
Speaker 6 (01:23:29):
Absolutely, you would ask guys coach.
Speaker 7 (01:23:31):
If Mike McDonald or Clinton Kobiak had called you in
this weekend, maybe they did. I mean, if they're smart,
they would and they said, you know, we want you
to give Sam one pointer, Donald, to give one pointer
of what he needs to be cautious of or make
sure that he does correctly. What would that one thing
be that he needs to be on top of it
as far as his game goes this weekend?
Speaker 4 (01:23:53):
Well, I would.
Speaker 6 (01:23:53):
I would just say, don't don't press. You know, we
just talked about how important this game is and he
knows that. And you know a lot of comparisons are
made between Stafford and Darnold this week. But you know,
I just play. Just do what you've been doing, you know,
and be careful when you get in the red zone.
Don't press. Every play is not there. We hope it's there,
(01:24:16):
but every play is not there. So be smart. And
then you know, and then but then play the game,
but trying to avoid anything any crazy throws.
Speaker 4 (01:24:24):
Be smart.
Speaker 1 (01:24:25):
Now, when you are Mike McDonald and you're known for
being a defensive specialist, and now you're going up against
this guy here who's known for his offensive mind, and
you've got a good year and a half in so
now you can't call yourself a rookie anymore. Like you
want to match wits with this guy. Are those things
that you used to embrace that you would do differently,
(01:24:48):
like when you would face Buddy Ryan. How much different
was your prep in getting ready for that game?
Speaker 8 (01:24:55):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (01:24:55):
It absolutely was different because Buddy Ryan's defenses were unique
at the time. And I remember telling our guys with
the forty nine ers as an example, okay, and they
run around and they do stuff, and they, you know,
just instead of our normal progression reads, just throw to
(01:25:15):
the first guy who's open. Just don't worry about the
second thirds, just go to the first guy who's open.
And that seemed to work better against his teams. Now
that's the only time we did that. Otherwise, you know,
we were pretty buttoned down. And I tried to do
that with our passing game every place I've been, but
against teams that really try and do a lot of
stuff to confuse you, you have to simplify what you're
(01:25:38):
telling the quarterback for that game.
Speaker 1 (01:25:41):
Does McVeigh, I mean, what do you think of him
as an offensive play caller? Is he as good as
there is out there right now.
Speaker 6 (01:25:48):
I think he is Chuck, I really do. I think
you know he's he's aggressive, but you know, and I
told you before I had a chance to interview him
proprior the Super Bowl when I worked that game, and
he was just excited young. He was really fun and
very impressive young guy. And of course his record has
proven that he's done very well. Now I would say this,
(01:26:09):
and also in any situation, it kind of helped me
when I had Joe Montana, it kind of helped me
look pretty good. And so you know, you he's got
Matthew Stafford and so I don't think there are any restrictions.
He just has to you know, he can do whatever
he feels the quarterback has to do because he has
(01:26:30):
the guy that can do it.
Speaker 1 (01:26:31):
My guess is, you tell me that offensive genius will
always top defensive genius. But tell me at least lie
to me that Sunday it's going to be different.
Speaker 8 (01:26:41):
No.
Speaker 6 (01:26:41):
I can't lie to you, I really can't. You know,
if you're an offensive genius, you know, look at but good.
I just told you about the greatest defensive lineman inustry
of football, Blue and Red you know, and I remember
do you remember a guy named Jim Burt. Oh, yeah,
from the nose tackle for the Giants. Really a good player,
(01:27:04):
I said, tell me about playing nose tackle. He goes, well,
I either hit him straight in the nose. I go
to the right or go to the left.
Speaker 4 (01:27:12):
I go.
Speaker 6 (01:27:13):
That's it. That's it. So that's your defensive prep for
the week.
Speaker 1 (01:27:17):
Yeah, all right, understood, understood. Well, have a great weekend.
We look forward to breaking it down with you on Monday.
Speaker 4 (01:27:26):
Okay, guys, you too.
Speaker 1 (01:27:27):
