(01:18):
Monday Sports Radio ninety three point three KJRFM.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. As we get
started here on this Monday morning. All sorts of things
playing for you, my goodness, A load of sports information
that we have to deal with here today, sift through
and make sense of, from the National Football League to
the wacky college football world. We even have baseball to

(01:42):
discuss today. So we welcome in you into the show.
Ashley Ryan is here, my name is Chuck Powell, and
Bucky Jacobson is back this morning. How was the trip?

Speaker 6 (01:50):
It was awesome and I'm still in recovery mode. If
that tells you how awesome it was. I mean, I'm
good to go now. I'm not gonna lie the flight backs.
I was not feeling all that great. Not a ton
of sleep. I think I logged on for one seventeen
hour drinking shift.

Speaker 9 (02:07):
Oh wow, that involved yeah a lot.

Speaker 6 (02:09):
Somebody's got to do it, Yeah exactly, somebody had to
do it. And yeah, we're just fifty after all. I mean,
why wouldn't you just totally get after it when you're
fifty years old?

Speaker 9 (02:17):
But it was it was twenty one, Is that what
they you know?

Speaker 6 (02:22):
I didn't act like I was twenty one, but I
acted closer to twenty one than I did to fifty.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
I'll tell you that, well, yeah, I know what they
are always right whoever they are.

Speaker 10 (02:31):
Yeah, yeah, so would everyone keep talking about all the
things they say?

Speaker 3 (02:35):
I know they are onto something. Yeah, that's what those
people are. Well, we are back together, and man, there
is a lot to dive into. And so normally we
could spend like ten minutes here trying to figure out
exactly what Bucky did right or wrong on his trip,
but we should probably dive into the football because the

(02:56):
Seattle Seahawks will start with them, and certainly we have
our big hitters coming on later on in the program.
Mike Holmgren and Hugh Mellan will both be joining us
from eight to ten o'clock here today. Greg Bell will
not be with us today. We got a special guest
coming your way at seven oh five because there happens
to be another monster story that we're dealing with here

(03:18):
on this Monday morning. But let's go ahead and start
with the Seattle Seahawks thirty seven nine winners over the
Atlanta Falcons yesterday, a game that at halftime was tied
at six. I mean, if you would have seen that,
just a final score, like you had to go run
errands or go on a seventeen hour drinking binge. You

(03:39):
know something I'm just bringing up off the top of
my head randomly, and you would have got at the
end of it and somebody said, ah Seahawks won thirty
seven to nine over the Atlanta Falcons, Like, oh gosh,
what happened there? You probably would have never guessed that
at halftime the score would be six to six, But
that's exactly what the case was. And it even got

(04:00):
to the point where I'm like, man, it's like three
and a half games where the offense hasn't been what
the offense was at the start of the season, And
I'm sitting here jotting down possible topics for Monday morning,
and I'm thinking, has the league figured out Clint Kubiak's
offense was going to come first to mine? But Rashid

(04:20):
Shahid returns a kick to start the second half, and
then the next thing, you know, the Seahawks can do
no wrong. It's just chunk play after chunk play. The
Falcons can't do anything on the offensive side of the ball.
And we had a game that was over by late
third quarter, and it was then just a matter of
getting through it without getting anybody hurt. That's what it

(04:41):
turned out to be. Six to six at halftime, before
the third quarter comes to a close. Bring in Drew Locke, yep,
beinge everybody, wrap everybody and spend bubble wrap, because this
thing is done. The Falcons are cooked.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
Well.

Speaker 6 (04:56):
It's interesting because a lot of times you let somebody
hang around that you shouldn't and and it can come
back to haunt you. Obviously it doesn't happen every time.
And yet it did feel like going into halftime, I'm
sure that the Falcons are like, hey, all right, we'll
right where we need to be right and yet that
opening kickoff that Rashiji he took to the house is
almost just one of those where it's it's kind of

(05:17):
a backbreaker, you know, just kind of diminishes your your
motivation a little bit. They were hanging around, they were
playing them tough. I think Atlanta's defense was looking good
and you know, took advantage of you know, a bobble
and then a pick and some stuff like that. But
ultimately it didn't feel like it didn't feel like that
they were the same after that play, and I'm sure

(05:39):
that they didn't come out of halftime playing the way
that led to you know, thirty one points or whatever in.

Speaker 9 (05:45):
The second half.

Speaker 6 (05:46):
But when something like that happens all of a sudden,
you just kind of feel like and they said on
the broadcast a couple different times, especially in the second half,
that Atlanta, you can't afford to make a bunch of
mistakes against this team. And they did, and Seattle made
them pay for just about every single one of them
in the second half.

Speaker 5 (06:00):
For sure.

Speaker 3 (06:01):
Did they make mistakes?

Speaker 10 (06:02):
My god, I felt like every two minutes, all of
a sudden, it was like in a ball is tipped
up in the air and it was either a chance
at an interception or an interception.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
Well, I mean the penalties and the poorly timed penalties.
I mean, I look across the National Football League and
you really do. It is really kind of a study
of professional sports. I mean, even the Tennessee Titans yesterday,
Mike McCoy's postgame press conference or postgame re marks in
the locker room, you guys never stopped working. I mean,

(06:33):
even when you're the worst team in the National Football League.
I mean, there's still like professional pride in your at least,
if nothing else, playing for your next paycheck. And so
the Atlanta Falcons certainly play hard, but my goodness, I mean,
you want to see the example of why a team
is four and nine, Like every opportunity they had to

(06:54):
win the game, they either made some stupid play, stupid penalty,
or they get they just caught a really horrible break.
I mean even the touchdown they scored before the half,
where they could have taken a lead and momentum into
the half, but the official and we'll have to talk
to Jean Stator about it tomorrow. I thought he established

(07:17):
himself back in play, and yet they decide that that's
you know, that's not a catch. I mean, every opportunity
the Falcons had for a big play, it either got
turned over by a penalty or got erased by some stupid,
you know, mishap on their side of things, and that

(07:40):
otherwise maybe they're got a lead at the end of
the first half. I think that is the example of
a team that is just a bad football team right there.
Even when you are playing hard, and even when you
are hanging with one of the best teams in the
National Football League, man, you can't you can't make winning plays.
That's about as clear as I can make it. The

(08:01):
Atlanta Falcons don't make winning football.

Speaker 6 (08:04):
Plays, yeah, yeah, and they find a way to make
ones like losing football plays or have one.

Speaker 9 (08:09):
I'm with you.

Speaker 6 (08:10):
I can't wait to hear what Jane says about that,
because I was sitting there thinking myself, well, that's a
four point swing. I mean, they still end up getting
a field goal out of that possession when it did
look like he got him a couple of feet back
in for sure, and if even if that's the rule,
and you want to, you know, split hairs about whether
or not he for sure had established himself back and
he most certainly didn't run out of bounds on his own.

(08:31):
There was a little bit of contact that would have
forced him out, which is a penalty. And yet so
that's one where they didn't shoot themselves on the foot.
But they had other times they're driving down and Bijon
Robinson looks like they're going to go in for a touchdown.
At that point in time, they had a couple of
drives that they were kind of rolling. He coughs up
the ball. It's you know, that whole saying a bad
teams find a way to lose, or good teams find

(08:52):
a way to win. There, there's a there's a reason
that there're four and nine. They've found a way to
lose a whole bunch of times. And yet yeah, I
mean it's you know, they're pros. They're going to go
out there and play hard. It's just kind of that
there comes a tipping point where if you end up
shooting yourself in the foot, you make a couple of
mistakes here and there, or you get a bad call
against your something happens that you can kind of fold

(09:14):
and crumble, and that's typically what will happen because they still,
even though they're pros, they still know that they're disappointed.
They still feel the disappointment. And when something bad happens,
good teams are like, all right, got to overcome it.
We're ten and three or you know, we're nine and three.
We're trying to win this thing. We got a division
to win, and you kind of dig deeper and find
that next year when you're a bad team and your

(09:36):
your season is kind of lost, when that bad thing happens,
it's a whole lot harder to not wither and Wilter
just kind of roll over. And that's exactly what happened
in the second half. And the Seahawks took it every
advantage of it.

Speaker 10 (09:46):
Yeah, I definitely got nervous when Sam Darnold threw the interception.
I was like, oh gosh, this is especially because for
that first half, it's like, you can't make any of
these mistakes right now because we clearly can't move the ball,
can't do anything.

Speaker 7 (09:58):
And then cle It was just interesting to see.

Speaker 10 (10:01):
It was like the first half of the second half
for two Actually, no, the first half of the third quarter.
Two totally different games, two totally different teams on the field.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
Well, yeah, fourth quarter was a different game too because
it was just a matter of just melting the.

Speaker 5 (10:16):
Field.

Speaker 3 (10:16):
But yeah, I think the Falcons kind of proved they're
a house of cards and they just couldn't keep overcoming
their mistakes and the setbacks. And I think that's emblematic
of a losing football team, and right now, a losing
franchise with a losing head coach that's on borrowed time
at this at this point where the Seahawks are a

(10:37):
quality team having a quality season with a quality head coach,
and it does feel like you got to halftime and
there might have even been a okay, enough is enough,
Get it together kind of moment because you come out
very first thing, extraordinary special teams play, next thing, force
a turnover on a great hit by Jaron Reid. Welcome

(10:58):
back Jaron Reid. And then the offense finally gets the
ball and I wrote down within four plays, finally some
offensive rhythm, and the next thing you know, you're scoring
a touchdown on that magical Darnold to JSN conversation. And
with six minutes left in the third quarter, you're suddenly
up two scores at that point, and then it was
just completely over from there. So on one hand, you

(11:20):
saw the tale of what a bad football team looks
like at this stage of the season and how they
can't get out of their own way even when they
are playing hard and hanging with a very good to
great team. And then on the other side of it,
you see why the Seahawks are being described as one

(11:41):
of the if not the most complete team in the
National Football League right now, because when they got the
opportunity they started to gain an advantage, they completely took
the advantage. It's like, We're not going to sit around
and wait for you to get your crap together. We
gave you a half to get your crap together. But
now it's time to start playing great football. And the
Seahawks did that. So tail of two teams tailed two

(12:04):
different paths right now, and the Seahawks just absolutely bloodied
the Atlanta Falcons in the second half.

Speaker 6 (12:11):
I think a lot of credit goes to the coaching staff.
A couple of years ago, I think it was Peyton
Manny maybe was on the Manning cast. He's like, everybody
talks about halftime adjustments. I don't remember any halftime adjustments.
I went in and I had, like, you know, something
to eat and something to drink, some orange slices or
whatever he said. And and yet the coaches most certainly
do because they're not you know, recovering from something. They're
not trying to you know, get themselves feeling okay to

(12:33):
go out there and battle for the next two quarters.
They're they're going in and thinking, Okay, what was working,
what wasn't working? Make adjustments. And Mike McDonald said in
his press game conference that a lot of credit goes
to those guys because he's he wasn't just speaking about
last last yesterday's game. He was talking about multiple games
where when that happens, they make some adjustments. There was

(12:55):
obviously some adjustments made that compounded the mistakes that either
at made, but also I mean more so just was like,
we just got to do what we do. We're better
than these guys are we let them hang around. We
weren't doing everything we possibly could. They were playing as
hard as possible. That the kick return kind of was
like a takes the wind out out of the falcon sales,
so to speak. But I think that really it was

(13:16):
the the fumble, that big hit fumble and then you
drive eighty eight yards on them and all of a
sudden they look up and it's twenty to six, when
they were just tied, Yeah, and you know they basically
hadn't done anything but have the ball one time and
drive before the fumble. It was like, we didn't really
even do anything bad except for cough the ball up,
and they've made us pay for it as bad as

(13:37):
much as they possibly could. So it was just a
matter of you got to kind of keep that pressure
on them and then typically the better team, the one
that doesn't wither or the one that doesn't falter down
the stretch, is the one that's going to win. But
I don't think anybody would have thought at halftime that
you're going to look up and see thirty seven to
nine as the final score of the game.

Speaker 3 (13:54):
No doubt.

Speaker 7 (13:55):
Yeah, I was listening to the broadcast too interesting.

Speaker 10 (13:57):
It was interesting because they were talking about the defense
and just how close they all are and how you
know they all know where anyone is going to be
and they're playing just like they all know where anyone
is going to be at any given moment, and they
just are so in sync. And those are the types
of things that you just love hearing, right because it's like, Okay, I.

Speaker 7 (14:15):
Just know even from that from the moment that you
hear that.

Speaker 10 (14:18):
Mike McDonald tells Rachid Shaheed to go out and run
the kickoff back and he did it. Like just it
seems like this team is really all on the same level.
They're spreading the ball around, they're doing all of the
things that you want your team to be doing, especially
at this moment in the season.

Speaker 3 (14:32):
Well, I mean they were trailing one hundred and fifty
yards to one hundred and eleven at halftime. I mean
that was the Ben don't break defense, and that's not
the defense that Mike McDonald wants to run. He wants
the break, break everything, break everything they do. That's what
I don't yeah, don't bend. Yeah, yeah, it's uh, it's

(14:53):
that's the kind of defense that he's striving to have,
and you saw it show up there in the second half.
But U and speaking of defense, and I think this
is the one thing that has to be talked about
before we get into what's on tap. My goodness, I mean,
we spent an entire week maybe hyping up nick Emon
Worri more than we have all season long, and to

(15:15):
the point where I got to Friday because we spent
an entire segment out of our roundtable. That's precious time
in the roundtable, And I had five different things to
throw into the second segment of the roundtable last week.
The only thing that Greg and Hugh allowed us to
discuss per their conversation was nick Emon Worri and how

(15:36):
special he looks like. And then it got to the
point where as I'm sitting there on Friday night, have
we just are we building up this guy too much?
Did we talk too much about nick Emon Worri? Are
we putting the cart a little bit before the horse?
Are we attaching the word great? Is it premature to
detach the word great, and then he goes out there

(15:56):
and dominates every single facet of the frick football game. Yep,
my goodness, is that guy good and maybe already great?
I mean block field goal interception. I think he had
a sack, two tackles for loss, led the team in
solo tackles yesterday.

Speaker 7 (16:14):
His sline was like an entire defensive style.

Speaker 3 (16:17):
I don't know if he's going to end up being
named to the Pro Bowl, because we know that there's
goofy voting and stuff like that, and I doubt as
a rookie he would be named first team All Pro.
But that's one of the best defensive players in the
National Football League right now. I can say that here
on December eighth, twenty twenty five.

Speaker 6 (16:35):
I think a lot of people were super excited when
when the Seahawks got him in the draft because of
his measurables, how athletic he was, and yet how McDonald
has decided to use him, and how he's capable of
being taught how to play so many different positions in
so many different ways. And then on top of it,
I think the like the block field goals, that's something

(16:58):
I mean just as fast as he is and long
as he is to be able to get to that
and then you put your hand there and sure there's
some luck involved you don't know where he's in to
kick it, but there's also something to putting it somewhere
around the area that it's going to be kicked at. Yeah,
pretty well blanketed. Yeah, it was pretty pretty much perfect
how he did it. And that was a big play.
I mean that was after an interception that that donald

(17:21):
had thrown and then basically they're going to possibly go
up six' three at that. Point had that touchdown not
been turned over or called, back that their next possession
that they only got a field goal out. OF i,
mean you're talking about a possibility of something being different
where even the return touchdown in the second half doesn't
even give you the lead at that point in. Time

(17:41):
he's a game, changer there's no doubt about. It and
the fact that he can be he's at his, age
he still is capable of learning how to do the
complex things That mike McDonald's asking me to do at
multiple different.

Speaker 9 (17:53):
Positions it's crazy.

Speaker 6 (17:54):
Impressive you're, Right who knows if he'll get any of
the accolades that he probably, deserves but he's going to
get him.

Speaker 10 (18:00):
Eventually noah feels, LIKE i think goodness is wrist or
hand was okay because that was LIKE i don't THINK
i was breathing ten minutes AS i was, like.

Speaker 3 (18:07):
Oh, god what.

Speaker 10 (18:08):
Happened he's kind of does that every, game but that
time he was like reacting like he really hurt.

Speaker 7 (18:12):
Himself all, right.

Speaker 3 (18:13):
Let's find out what's on? Tap what's on?

Speaker 9 (18:19):
Tep what's on?

Speaker 5 (18:20):

Ten many people believing that the dynasty has come to

(20:51):
an end officially for The Kansas City, chiefs but they
do have an awfully soft schedule the rest of the,
way especially If denver is by chance on the last
game of the. Season kind of resting their players because
they've already wrapped some stuff, up SO i wouldn't count
them out just. Yet College Football playoff. Controversy we will

Notre dame did not get into The College Football. Playoff,

elsewhere The Winter meetings got underway last. Night Major League,
baseball The mariners did pull off a trade over the,
weekend sending Prospect Harry ford to The Washington nationals in

(24:50):
exchange for left handed reliever Jose A. Farrera will talk
more about that coming up at seven thirty here. Today
there Was Katel marte returning To. Seattle rumors floating around
out there as, well and The kraken will be in
action tonight against The Minnesota. Wild the crack and really

(25:10):
need a. Victory they will drop the puck on that
game at seven. O'clock but perhaps the most interesting topic
today is the college football playoff. Controversy the rankings came
out yesterday morning And Notre, dame after being in the
top ten for five consecutive, weeks when the actual college

(25:31):
football rankings came, Out Notre dame did not make the.
Cut joining us now to talk about that and many other.
Things FORMER udub head coach and now he's a big
fancy analyst on one of the big. Networks joining us
Is Chris peterson On chuck And buck in the. Mornings good, morning,
Coach good morning.

Speaker 5 (25:50):
GUYS i think you're overstating it as a big fancy,
analyst a bit much super.

Speaker 3 (25:58):
Fancy, ah your sheer fancy there on the. Set you
do a great. JOB i MEAN i miss you, coaching
but you do a great job.

Speaker 5 (26:05):
There you, KNOW i love. FOOTBALL i just still can't
stomach to watch one of my teams. PLAY i like
to watch everybody else's teams play and have a lot
of answer sitting on the.

Speaker 3 (26:17):
SIDELINES i made my living that.

Speaker 5 (26:21):
Way.

Speaker 3 (26:22):
Coach just, yeah not investing any skin in the, game
but having loud ass opinions all the. Time that's that's.
You just you just describe.

Speaker 5 (26:29):
Me you, know it's not a bad. GIG i kind
of been missing this all, year all my.

Speaker 3 (26:35):
Life you made a lot more money THAN i, do.
Though all, right, well let's talk about the college Football.
PLAYOFF i don't really want to steer you in any.
Direction let me just ask you just an overall. Question
what was your reaction to seeing the college football playoff seatings?
Yesterday what's your biggest takeaway from?

Speaker 5 (26:56):
It oh my, GOSH i MEAN i just continually shape my,
head scratched my. Head you, Know i've been saying this,
Forever like the games On saturday for college football are,
spectacular it's just. Awesome but behind the, scenes you, Know

(27:18):
sunday Through friday in the, offseason it is just complete.
Chaos and this is just another you, know step along
the way to that. Chaos and you, KNOW i think
we all know since twenty twenty when the pandemic, kick
everything changed in normal life and in college, football from you,

(27:40):
know nil to the re, alignment to the portal to
firings with the huge, buyouts and now we have the you,
know THE cfp. Drama WHAT i actually thought about the
selection yesterday was for what the committee was, given they
got it. RIGHT i really Like Notre. DAME i mean

(28:03):
THEY i Like Marcus. FREEMAN i Think Notre dame could
have made a run in this. Thing but at the
end of the, day When miami And Notre dame were
ranked so close to each other in almost all the
metrics and in the final, RANKINGS i don't see how
you could Put Notre dame in Over. Miami if it

(28:26):
comes to that they played head to. Head like as a,
COACH i have a hard time with that walking in
the to the team room and, saying, yeah we beat. Them.
Yeah everything else is the, saying but we're not Going
that makes no sense to. Me so you know the
fact THAT espn has this show and they do it

(28:48):
because they make money and, drama and they have it every,
Week and they Had miami After Notre dame beat them
and then they lost another. Game so far apart in the.
Rankings but as the season was changing And miami got
better and they started winning more and they got close
in the, rankings it looked so awkward that they were
so far. Apart but by the end of this regular,

(29:10):
season they're sitting right next to each other and they
probably did the right.

Speaker 6 (29:14):
Thing, Yeah i'm with. YOU i, MEAN i agree with
you on that. PART i MEAN i was last week
at some point last. WEEK i bet this is long
before we thought or knew that we were going to
have you. On AND i was just thinking to, Myself
Chris peterson would figure out how to how to get
all this stuff.

Speaker 5 (29:31):
Right.

Speaker 6 (29:31):
Now let's just make him the, commissioner get rid of
the whole committee we'll just let you do it all
on your. Own probably a pay bump if you just
take over all of college of.

Speaker 3 (29:40):
Football thank, You, no, thanks too big of a.

Speaker 6 (29:45):
Headache i'm with, You but you just kind of talked
about some of these headaches that we talk about all
season and the coaching you, know coaches leaving and leaving
contracts on the table and buyouts and transfer. Portal but
just sticking to kind of the Topic djure at this,
POINT i, mean is there a change if you were
the czar of the college football playoff would you want to?

(30:06):
HAVE i like having an underdog having a chance at this.
Thing if they are unbelievably, exceptional they don't. Lose they
go out there and just, say, hey you got to
give us a chance against the big.

Speaker 9 (30:15):
Dogs but do you like having two of them in?

Speaker 5 (30:17):
There, no not at. All And i'm one of those
guys that came from a, place as you, know, right
we had to scratch and claw to get a. Chance
but you, know, again they're they're kind of figuring this
out as we. Go like last, year they ended up
GIVING asu And Boise state buys in you, know in

(30:40):
the in the, tournament and no one really felt that
was the right, thing so they tweaked it this. Year this,
YEAR i don't think anyone's feeling good about number Twenty
tulane and number twenty four jam you both getting in
Over Notre DAME Byu. Vandy you, know so there's going

(31:00):
to be some tweaking coming to. THAT i just hope
there's not an overreaction where you're not given this group of,
five group of six a chance to go compete for.
This but you can you can feel the change coming
on this because this doesn't feel right as.

Speaker 3 (31:15):
Well, yeah just make the, adjustments as you, said don't
think that the answer, is, oh we got to expand
to twenty. FOUR i, mean we just can't keep everybody,
happy you, know give the twelve team format a little
bit of time and let's make our adjustments as. Necessary
And i'm with. YOU i, mean and this is coming
from a guy that Built Boise stayed into a national
power and he's saying we shouldn't have. Two AND i

(31:38):
couldn't agree with you. More Chris peterson is with, us of,
course former UB ed coach and now college football analysts
For Fox. Sports great to have them on here on
the programs talk about this college football playoff. Controversy you
mentioned before that they got it right the committee by
Putting miami ahead Of Notre. Dame what About, alabama? COACH i,

(31:58):
MEAN i realize not penalizing someone too much because they
earned an extra, game but considering how Closely Notre, Dame,
Alabama miami all seemed to be ranked by committee standards
heading into this, weekend didn't that third loss provide the
opportunity for you to Bump alabama out and Put miami

(32:20):
In Notre dame both into the?

Speaker 5 (32:21):
Tournament, Okay another awkward thing with college football right now
is these conference championship, games, right some of them are really.
GOOD i mean The Ohio State, INDIANA i, mean was
that not? Spectacular and it was a low scoring. Game
usually low scoring games aren't that, spectacular but that was.

(32:43):
Spectacular and then you go To Alabama. Georgia you're, like
this is kind of awkward That alabama already went there
had the best win to me in all of college
football this. Season that was the best win When alabama
went Into georgia and beat. Them and then you have
the most awkward one With duke Playing virginia and you're, like,

(33:06):
oh what is going to happen here If duke, wins
and so that's you, know that's another problem. THERE i,
mean it's just it's again a hard. Situation what are
you going to. Do you're going to really punish somebody
that had the best win of the. Season they're playing
them for the second, time and you, know it's just,

(33:27):
like you don't want to punish a team that's going
to like play for a league championship and knock them
all the way. OUT i, thought you, know THE sec
is a rough, neighborhood and those guys had about four
games that they're playing four or five all ranked teams
at the, time and they're navigating this pretty darn. Well

(33:48):
and SO i didn't have a problem leaving Leaving alabama
in this whole. THING i FIND i felt it would
have even maybe a little awkward to bounce them, out you,
know going to a championship. Game but this is the bottom.
Line there is going to be no perfect way when
you have one hundred and forty three teams in college
football buying for this and you're trying to give access

(34:12):
and you, know we're talking about you, know some, leagues
it's apples to oranges and it's just it's not the,
same but you're trying to make it. Right so there's
going to always be a little bit of. Awkwardness but
in my opinion, too this is the beauty of college.
Football everybody's, like get rid of the, committee hate the.
COMMITTEE i don't see how you can do, that and

(34:32):
you got to embrace. It AND i think if we
make some changes moving forward and tweak it so, okay
learned on that, one we're not doing that. Again it
can get.

Speaker 9 (34:41):
Better i'm with.

Speaker 6 (34:43):
YOU i, MEAN i Think chuck AND i differ a
little bit on the expansion. Idea and yet to, ME i,
Mean i'm not in a hurry to break this thing
and try to change it all. Together and yet some
of the TWEAKS i would wonder if you would agree
with no matter what happens if you expand it to.
Sixteen let's just, say if you're gonna have somebody that's

(35:04):
at seventeen and they're going to be upset that they're,
not so you're, right there's nothing that's going to be.
Perfect but to, me the idea of making it to
where maybe it's your top six teams that are there
automatically in and then you have a ten team playoff
to figure out the rest or something like, that where
it's it's almost like a play, in a play in
type of a. Game do you think there's anything to,
that because once you start getting down below you, know sixteen,

(35:28):
teams all of a, sudden It's virginia do you really
deserve to be? In or you, Know Georgia, tech did
you really deserve to be? In after three losses in
the A. SEC i think that there's a bigger or
a more valid argument as to why some of these
teams will be on the outside looking in when you
expand it just a little bit further than.

Speaker 5 (35:44):
Twelve, YEAH i, agree AND i agree with you one
hundred percent on. THAT i, MEAN i think we should go,
slow you, know we tweak it from the things we
learned this year and see what that looks. Like if
it does go to, sixteen you know eventually that could you,
know there's some merit. THERE i think the play on
games are. Interesting there could be a lot of, drama

(36:07):
which is WHAT i. Mean that's college football right. Now.
RIGHT i see joking with our guys At fox, that
you know The fansville commercial Of Doctor. Pepper, yeah you,
know a couple of years, AGO i just chuckle those
commercials and get a kick out of. Them now they're
not dramatic, enough like college football ahead of The, fan
though there's more drama going on in those than the.
COMMERCIAL i think another. THING i think another thing that you,

(36:33):
know and again the networks would have to get on
board with, This but LIKE i think the college football
season needs to start. EARLIER i think we need to
start in the you, know two weeks earlier In. August
everybody's dying for football at that point, anyways AND i
really think this whole thing needs to be done by Early.

(36:56):
January january, first and for a couple of. Reasons, one
then let THE nfl go have their Their, heyday don't
compete in. There you.

Speaker 12 (37:06):
KNOW i the games were so spread out last year
THAT i kind of felt myself losing a little interest
in the college football playoffs and you're, putting you, know
THE nfl playoffs in.

Speaker 5 (37:16):
Between And i'm more of a college football guy THAN
i am A nfl, guy but so that was a little.
Awkward and then you can then also shift the, academy you,
know the football calendar around the academic. CALENDAR i mean
it is ridiculous that we're having, coaches you, know and
this been go around for a, while but leave their

(37:37):
programs that kids are opting out going into the transfer
portal while the seasons still going. On so you got
to play the, season get that over. With then you
got to sign your high school. Kids then after that
you can sign your portal. Guys and there's going to
probably need to be some adjustments to. Springball although these

(37:58):
coaches are old school people and they don't like change
and they want that spring football how it's always. Been
BUT i you, KNOW i look at THE nfl how
they do their quote spring. Football it's. Later it's not
as much, pass not as much. CONTACT i, MEAN i
see that. Model and then you, know the kids are
all here for the, summer the coaches are. Here they

(38:20):
can now coach them in the. Summertime so you kind
of just blend into. That and so, anyway there's just
so many things that you're trying to figure. Out it's
it's not it's.

Speaker 3 (38:29):
UNENDING i know you don't want the, job but you
sound like a. Commissioner sound like you got some answers.
There Coach peterson is with us, Here chuck it buck
in the. MORNING i do want to ask, you because,
WELL i THINK i already know the, answer BUT i
want to hear how you verbalize. It i'm sure you
Think Notre dame is not doing the right thing by

(38:51):
announcing they're sitting out the.

Speaker 5 (38:52):
Bulls, YEAH i mean, again here we, Go. Fansville, Right
we've had like players just opting, out and now we
got teams opting. Out it's, like are we serious? Here you,
know you know WHAT i think ABOUT i think ABOUT
byu a little, bit because you, know here's the team

(39:13):
that got beat by the number four team in the country,
twice and they really haven't said a whole. Lot so
the word on the street was THAT byu was gonna
Play Notre dame in that Pop tart bull which would
have been a really cool. MATCHUP byu can make a
case that two years in a row they've kind of
been snubbed a little, bit but they're gonna go on and.
PLAY i, MEAN i don't. Know this is a hard

(39:35):
one for me BECAUSE i get the emotion and How
Notre dame feels like they were so, wronged but it
also feels, Like, Okay i'm gonna take my ball and
go home now and you guys, said you know HOW i,
come AND i, say, Yes i'm still an old school
guy that we're. Teaching, like you, know there's so many
things that this is WHY i love football so. Much

(39:56):
it's like The trojan. Horse it's the trojan horse values
that we're. Teaching there's so much life that we're still
teaching through this. Game and one of those things are
is like being extremely disappointed and things don't go your
way and you still got to figure out how to
do your best and navigate through. That it's, like, okay

(40:18):
so what? Now WHAT i, mean that's WHAT i think, About, Like,
okay this happened to, Us so what? Now what are
we going to go? Home are we going to lay?
Down are we going to? Respond and SO i think about.
THAT i Think Notre, dame you, know is going to
be really good next, year and so you're kind of
throwing all that away in terms of, practicing putting a
chip on your, shoulder go out and prove it against

(40:40):
a really good team and set yourself up for next.
YEAR i understand both sides of. THIS i would have
loved to see him play AGAINST.

Speaker 3 (40:47):
BYU i would love to see you coach. Again are
you really not going to coach, again and it is
Like Sandy kofax hanging it. UP i, mean you've got
something left in the tank, Here, Peterson are you really?

Speaker 5 (40:57):
Done one of the things THAT i do now THAT
i really find a lot of probably joy purpose In
So i'm not coaching on the, sideline BUT i. DO
i do some stuff with a handful of, coaches and
SO i find a lot of, Purpose like all the
things that we're talking about here help them coaches navigate

(41:19):
this really difficult arena that we're in right, now and
it is, tricky, tough and it's like it's really about
it comes back to, ourselves you, know with all the
things that are being thrown, at how do we show
up every? Day is our? Best you? Know we put
that always on our. Kids we demand so much out
of the kids and the players and expect them to
bring their best, energy their best focused day in and day.

(41:41):
Out but half the time we don't show up as
our best because this arena is so like twenty four,
seven three sixty, five and it squeezes us and dinners
us and makes us not our best but our worst
version in some. Cases and SO i find a lot
of purpose in helping coaches navigate. That AND i think
the bottom line is that and this is WHY i

(42:03):
stepped away WHEN i was trying to really get clarity
on this whole, thing THAT i had this beautiful job
at you, dug but wasn't. Happy AND i Think i've
just come to the conclusion THAT i love. FOOTBALL i love, teaching,
coaching leading all those type of things and helping people navigate.
That but when you jump back into that arena and
stand on the, sidelines you live a, very very narrow.

(42:26):
Life that is what you do twenty four, seven three sixty,
Five and at this point in my, LIFE i just
don't want to.

Speaker 3 (42:34):
Live that Narrow well, said thank, you. Coach it was
great hearing from, you great. Avenue all we appreciate, it
and we'll bug you again down the.

Speaker 5 (42:42):
Road all, Right, yeah appreciate you, guys and good Luck
Solvent College.

Speaker 3 (42:47):
Football, Well i'm gonna Try Chris peters the joining us
like you right here on The chuck And buck in the,
morning And i'm gonna stop to dig right. In AND
i got a lot of things more to. SAY i
don't know if we're gonna have time to get into it,
today but if, Not we will certainly have a lot
of discussions on tomorrow's show coming. Up Next Factor fiction is.

(43:07):
Over we're not gonna Play Factor, fiction but there's still
a little bit Of Factor fiction business to take care.
Of and believe it or, not baseball has made its
way into this Crazy Monday Sports radio ninety three point
three kJ. Rfm, well congratulations to The Factor fiction champions

(43:40):
of twenty twenty. Five for the second year in a,
row third banner in the history Of Factor. Fiction the
morning show celebrates with champagne over each other's. Heads Ashley
ryan with a two and zero week to finish out the.
Season bucky also finishes five hundred for the. Year we

(44:04):
were the only show to finish over five hundred for the.
Season all three of us five hundred are better for the.
Season that's. Right the people that gamble the least AT
kjr win the most when it comes To Factor congratulations.

Speaker 6 (44:20):
Team maybe we should be, arroganting boastful about gambling when
we don't ever do.

Speaker 3 (44:26):
It, okay we're the. Best we're the. Best, Hey, ashley
you know.

Speaker 9 (44:29):
How you make trophies and stuff for? Us can you make?

Speaker 10 (44:32):
BANNERS i GOT i got called dumb by some of our.
Listeners SO i pick About indiana plus five Against Ohio.

Speaker 7 (44:39):
State who's?

Speaker 5 (44:40):
Dumb?

Speaker 3 (44:40):
Now, yeah maybe they see the Championship beltum.

Speaker 9 (44:44):
Now L O l that's a laugh out loud at,
you not with, you at.

Speaker 3 (44:50):
You so congratulations, gang we did it, again back to
back champions Of factor.

Speaker 6 (44:56):
Fiction granted you you kind of carried. It you you
let everybody you were the? Leader were you beat everybody INCLUDING?
Mj yeah it is, expert, yep it. Is, yeah whooped?
Him i'm pretty sure you Whooped. FAINE i Think fain
probably finished like five hundred as. Well and, yeah you's

(45:19):
usually good head and shoulders better than everybody. Else congratulations
did kick out individual. Title we're not gonna hang a
banner for. That that's your own.

Speaker 3 (45:27):
Thing, well, uh you know What i'm going to be
Like Fernando. Mendoza i'm just gonna get in front of the,
camera speak directly into it and just please yell about.

Speaker 9 (45:39):
Team he's really not good in the, interviews really good.

Speaker 3 (45:43):
Quarterback you, know it's probably going to cost him in
the draft a few.

Speaker 9 (45:46):
Spots it. Might they'll overlook. IT e get coached on
that because boy is it.

Speaker 3 (45:52):
Bad uh let me mention a couple of things that
we have not talked about yet before we talk about
WHAT i had planned to talk about. Here because we
don't Have, factor SUDDENLY i have this full, passion whole
cho to play around. IN i don't have to worry
about getting the factor fiction because the season is over.
With But Rick neuheisel is being rumored as the kougs

(46:13):
next head. COACH i don't know how serious that. Is,
well we're supposed to have coach on tomorrow at nine.
O'clock if he, cancels it might be really. Serious now that.

Speaker 7 (46:23):
Makes a lot more sense Why ian was asking me
for his.

Speaker 3 (46:25):
Info, yes so maybe maybe MAYBE i mean the idea
being That rick New isl takes over a program that
he knows in a state that he's, recruited and then
he brings over his Son, jerry to be the offensive
coordinator and then just hands the baton To jerry when
the time is. Right But Jimmy rodgers left For Iowa

(46:47):
state over the weekend After Matt campbell went To Penn,
state followed the bouncing, ball and So rick New isel
rumors to The kougs have. Started i'm Sure ian's going
to talk about a little bit later on, TODAY i
would also want to point this. Out Notre dame is
not the only team that is bounced out of the.
BOWLS i realize it looks like sour, grapes AND i

(47:09):
think that it certainly. Is you're not going to USE, US,
ESPN abc to get a GREAT tv rating in a
bowl game after you just completely snubbed us and broke
our hearts when we felt we were deserving four programs
and counting have decided we're not, WELL i guess not
counting anymore because The bowl games are set four. Programs Iowa,

(47:32):
State Kansas, State Notre, dame And baylor all said we
don't want to. Play SO i think everybody's just got
to accept this. FACT i realized we grew up with bowl.
Games they're about. Dead they're not going to exist for much,
longer and if they, DO i think that they're going
to be in a much different form than what they are.
Now so, yes most of that from The, Irish i'm
sure sour, grapes but part of it is that there

(47:55):
is really nobody even wants to play in bowl games.
Anymore kids don't want, to coaches don't want, toministrators don't want.
To the only people that want to do it are
the people that make money off of.

Speaker 9 (48:05):
Them, yeah oh, yeah they make.

Speaker 6 (48:06):
MONEY i mean there's no doubt about, that and that
money trickles down to some, degree, RIGHT i, mean SO
i THINK i think there's some folks that would still
want to go out. THERE i know this is an
ARGUMENT i stand, on like the getting to play one final,
game but if it is sour grapes What Notre dame's.
Doing at the same, time if they came up with
that as a as a team said, no we don't

(48:28):
want to do. It we're not going to do exactly
what you, said and that's GRANT espn a great matchup
for some bowl, game THEN i don't have ANY i
don't have anything to say about.

Speaker 9 (48:37):
It it's just all.

Speaker 6 (48:38):
Right if you don't want to play in, it then
don't play in. It you're right if you think you're
getting ready to go to THE nfl and why the
heck would you risk hurting, yourself which a lot of
kids are opting to.

Speaker 9 (48:47):
Not do, THAT i may okay with that as.

Speaker 10 (48:48):
WELL i think if it, was LIKE i don't, know
SOMEBODY i liked that was dropping out of A bowl.
Game i'd be, like, yeah good for, you you SHOW
espn what you're made. Of but because It's Notre, DAME
i think they're.

Speaker 3 (49:00):
Babies and THEN i do want to mention a little,
baseball AND i don't know if we're gonna have enough
time later to do it at. All So Harry ford
is now A Washington. National we've already talked about a
little bit this. Morning i'm surprised he wasn't worth more
on the trade. MARKET i do see the value Of Jose.

(49:21):
Ferrera ferrer who is a young lefty who is controllable
for a number of, years one hundred works low in
THE zwn tremendous ground ball, rate but also somebody with
that nastiest stuff that strikes out fewer than one batter per,
inning and not just at the major league, level but
did at the minor league level as. Well it smacks
very much to me of a left Handed Gregory Santos

(49:44):
bucky who just did not work. OUT i, mean he's
now an Ex, mariner AND i know how excited they
were when they landed him and thought the exact same
things about him as they think About ferrera right. Now
so to, me it's less THAN i Thought Harry ford
would fetch in a. Trade So i'm a little disappointed from.
That and that's even while acknowledging That farrer certainly can

(50:09):
be useful to this team for the next few.

Speaker 9 (50:11):
Years, YEAH i, MEAN i. DON'T i think.

Speaker 6 (50:13):
THERE i felt like there would have been more For Harry,
ford AND i think that maybe you could have gotten
more had you said we're going to keep him as
our backup guy and catch him once a, week or
maybe even try to Give cal a couple days a
week off and if he's swinging, it then you'll Leen
dh once a week in between that as. WELL i
think you could have rose his, stoff could have, risen
and you could have got. More but at this point

(50:34):
it's you're getting a guy who is for sure capable
of being good in the big. Leagues he hasn't really popped.
Yet Jose ferrer guy we're talking. About he hasn't really
popped and done WHAT i think his stuff. Says but to,
me it's THE i think there's a Different he didn't
walk guys Like Santo santos was a guy who didn't
punch out a bunch of. Guys but it's he also
walked a. Lot At this guy's like ninety fIF percentile

(50:56):
in walk. Percentage so he doesn't walk. Guys so he
pitches in the, zone which means then he's gonna put,
balls but guys are going to put balls in, play
and then they're not going to put it in play very.
Well and so that's where he's really good on his
hard hit percentage and barrel rates and a bunch of
other stuff that you end up looking. Into SO i
can see how The mariners, are, like that's what we.

(51:16):
Need we need a left handed. Guy we don't need
a backup catcher that is one of our top. Prospects
so at the same, time it's kind of one of
those you could have probably gotten more for him had
you Let Harry ford become a big league, dude because
then you're trading a controllable position player that plays a
very important. Position you're getting more than just a, good
controllable left handed arm out of the.

Speaker 9 (51:36):
Bullpen So i'm with.

Speaker 6 (51:37):
YOU i think there's two different ways you could have
win about. It there's not a whole heck of a
Lot i'm going to immediately criticize about The mariners when
it comes to them going out and getting a reliever,
though because they seem to really know how to do.

Speaker 3 (51:48):
That that's. True the other THING i think needs to be,
Mentioned winter meetings are. Underway Joel sherman said last, night
The Kyle schwarber domino once it, falls it's the differentference
between having an Active winter meetings and his estimation and
not having. ANYTHING i think what he's saying is the
free agent market's waiting On Kyle, schwarber and it just

(52:09):
sets in motion all sorts of other. Activity so we shall.
See The Pittsburgh pirates have Offered Kyle schwarber a four,
year one hundred million dollar. CONTRACT i just want to
mention this because there's not going to be time later on.
Today that is the most ridiculous pr Stunt i've ever
seen in my entire. Life they know they're not going
to get, him, yeah at that, salary and yet they

(52:32):
want their fans to see sue we're. Trying we, Offered
we offered something thirty percent below market, value knowing that
he wasn't going to take. IT i, mean not only
even if he did take four, years one hundred million,
dollars is it going to be on a bad baseball
team that's been rebuilding for the last two. Decades it's

(52:53):
just a pr. Stunt SO i hope people In pittsburgh
aren't falling for. That they they unfortunate only have painted.
Themselves and not only if you want to go out
To Kyle, schwarber not only gonna have to play market,
Rate you probably gotta have to pay more than market
rate to get him to come To. Pittsburgh because nobody Trusts.
Pittsburgh they'll pull the rug oout from underneath the entire.
Operation schwarber will get there and they'll Trade Paul skeins

(53:14):
the next.

Speaker 9 (53:15):
Day you.

Speaker 3 (53:15):
Know that's that's How, pittsburgh that's the reputation that they've.
Earned and so please do not buy That Kyle schwarber
pirates have made a really serious offer for it's not
serious at. All, no it's a counterfeit offer For Kyle
schwarber on the free agent. Market all, Right coming up,
next we're From mike McDonald about yesterday's win Before Hugh
mellon joins is at eight o'clock On monday Morning quarterback

(53:37):
On chuck And Bucks Sports radio ninety three point THREE
Kjrfmh It's Monday Morning quarterback With Hugh millen here this,

(53:58):
morning and normally it's All Seawk, talk brought to you
By Core, Construction Washington center For sleep At North Creek,
roofing And Muckleshoot bingo In, auburn your home For Machine.
Go but this college football start is such a big
topic THAT i wanted to get huge thoughts on. It
what was your biggest reaction To sunday's.

Speaker 13 (54:20):
ANNOUNCEMENTS i thought that the committee got every single pick.

Speaker 5 (54:25):
Right.

Speaker 13 (54:26):
Wow AND i understand the arguments for. AGAINST i think
we all. Do it's just what you.

Speaker 3 (54:32):
Value BUT.

Speaker 13 (54:35):
I think That i'm glad that They the argument is.

Speaker 3 (54:41):
Is not THE.

Speaker 13 (54:42):
Bcs the argument, is you know number three got, screwed
and then initially in THE, cfp then oh number five got. Screwed,
well now we're saying number thirteen got. Screwed BUT i
think that given the, circumstances, yes every single, spot every
tea and every. Spot in my, OPINION i agree with.

Speaker 6 (55:02):
Oh, WELL i, mean Then alabama's right where they should,
be even THOUGH i, MEAN i don't want to fault
them for losing in a conference championship game when others
didn't even have the opportunity to and yet it seems
like they did do that to B yu.

Speaker 13 (55:20):
Agreed and there's a distinction in my. Mind first of, All,
bama you watch the. Game what color jerseys? Were Was
alabama wearing in that? Game you guys, remember.

Speaker 3 (55:34):
Yeah they were? Red? No they were?

Speaker 13 (55:38):
Yeah, yeah, yeah they're wearing their their dark. Reds you
know why because they're the number one seed from THE
sec one hundred years from. Now if you look in an,
almanac The alabama was the number one team in the
regular season in THE, sec there was four who had one.
Loss and the way the conferences they say strength of.

(56:01):
Schedule of those Four, Bama, Georgia TEXAS, a and N Ole.
Miss bama had the number one strength of. Schedule georgia
had the number. Two Now bama wasn't number one seed
because they had the number one strength to.

Speaker 3 (56:15):
Schedule they.

Speaker 13 (56:16):
Were they just Eliminated TEXAS a and n and Min
Ole miss due to strength to, schedule and then it
Left georgia And. Bama and Because bama Beat, georgia they
were number. One and so if you had told me In,
august the team that this is THE sec now maybe
at the top two or. Three it's even with other
conferences but you go ten twelve. DEEP i, mean these

(56:38):
are the teams from THE sec that didn't make. It
they got five who were In texas didn't make, It, Vanderbilt, Missouri, TENNESSEE.
Lsu that is BY i Think anti metrics is the
deepest conference in college. Football and For alabama to be
the number one if you told me In august the
number one team from THE, sec whoever it, is do

(57:00):
they deserve to be in a twelve team? PLAYOFF i
would say, absolutely unequivocally. Yes and you, know, yeah they,
played they didn't look. Good but what in the hell
is with college? Football in THE nfl and The Major League?
Baseball all these sports the best teams get a. Bye
so how has college football got this thing where now

(57:21):
the best, teams, well they don't get a. Bye they
have to play each. Other and teams Like oregon AND
a and m And Ole miss they sit here and
they don't. Play SO i think we all understand. That
but to, me it's WHAT i, value And alabama is
in AND i don't have any hesitation with.

Speaker 3 (57:41):
That, YEAH i don't think college conference championships are going
to be around much. LONGER i think it's too. DIFFICULT
i don't. KNOW i mean even in THE, ACC i,
mean why do you have a tiebreaker system that puts
why why couldn't you Have miami Versus virginia and we
could have avoided all of?

Speaker 12 (57:58):
This?

Speaker 3 (57:59):
Yeah, yeah but even the tie breaker, Season, YEAH i.
Agree talk About Notre. Dame do they have a beef?
THOUGH i, KNOW i know you're saying they got it all?
Right so why do you Think Notre dame deserved to
be on the outside looking At?

Speaker 13 (58:13):
Well, listen they have been invited to the, conference The Big.
Ten i've looked it up for. Decades they played one
hundred and nineteen. Years they have turned down the opportunity
to be in a, conference The Big, twelve THE. Acc in,
fact during THE covid they were temporarily in THE. Acc
and of course they've they've been in The Big east
and THE acc and other.

Speaker 3 (58:33):
Sports but they want to be.

Speaker 13 (58:34):
Independent, okay, fine you can still win the national championship
as an, independent but you're going to lose all ties
if you go out and you play a schedule like.
That their one impressive win IS usc and they you,
know they LOSE am and m they lose To miami
and then they don't want to play in a. Conference
so to, me when you compare that to What, alabama you,

(58:59):
Know alabama had to go four straight games and beat
and they did beat ranked. TEAMS i think that the you,
know the schedule and the idea that so before they
played the conference championship, game then you would have Said
alabama at two losses has a much more impressive resume
Than Notre dame at two losses and then at least

(59:22):
on the balance of the. Season and then and then you,
say Well alabama had to play and, well, Okay Notre
dame is never going to put themselves in that. Situation
in my, opinion WHAT i Value i'd, Say Notre, Dame
you're going to lose all. Ties this was a, tie
you lost the. Tie i'm with. YOU i THINK i
think that there's room for.

Speaker 6 (59:41):
That and yet that kind of goes to The tulane
And James.

Speaker 13 (59:44):
Madison, yeah before you get to, that just a point
On Notre. Dame they played football for one hundred nineteen.
Years for one hundred and four of those years there
was No Big ten championship. Game so in that so
the discrepancy you, know between them being, independent it did
it didn't get thrust to the forefront when in the
rankings because nobody else was playing conference championship. Games in

(01:00:05):
this era of conference championship, GAMES i think that they're
in a detriment to the in the manner THAT i describe.

Speaker 9 (01:00:13):
All, right, WELL i mean so.

Speaker 6 (01:00:14):
Too then to, me it's like there's a couple of
teams you were, saying Like texas And vanderbilt and some
other teams that are good teams in THAT sec. Conference for,
Example Notre dame is a good. Team they've been playing good,
football and yet they're along with the others on the
outside looking. In AND i like giving an underdog an
opportunity to play with the big.

Speaker 9 (01:00:32):
Boys and Yet.

Speaker 6 (01:00:33):
I'm not one hundred percent sure IF i, mean you're
just looking at you, know Tule in for. Example one
of their, losses it's not like they went. Undefeated one
of their, losses they lost forty five to ten To Old.
Miss is who they are going to face now in
the first round of the. Playoffs it doesn't seem like
that's one of the teams that really has a chance
of winning this.

Speaker 13 (01:00:50):
Thing everything That i'm going to say really has nothing
to do, with, hey do we want to give the
little guy a. Chance you, know, look look we're The
United states and The. Olympics you know a lot of
people look at us like we're The, yankees or you,
know We're Notre dame or what have. You this is
an argument from, pragmatics AND i think we All i'll

(01:01:13):
just say for, me And i'll try maybe to convince
you we need to shut the hell up and accept
the group of five for the following. Reason if you,
know WHEN i was a player rep in THE, nfl
did a lot of reading about the anti trust law
school we're going through the. Strike then that intrigued. Me

(01:01:35):
i've read all fifty four pages Of allston versus THE,
ncaa all the things that a lot of college football,
FANS i would say most football fans are turned off
about college. Football THE, nil the revenue, sharing the open transfer.
Portal all of that was triggered by THE, ncaa who

(01:01:57):
got greedy.

Speaker 3 (01:01:58):
In The alston.

Speaker 13 (01:01:59):
Case that was just an that was not a case
about the comp overall compensation for. Players that was just
educated education related like computers or postgraduate training or a
violin for a musician a music. Major and THE ncaa
they lost at the appellate court or the lower. Court

(01:02:20):
they lost at the appellate. Court they took it to
The Supreme, court Not, austin and they lost nine to.
Nothing they have had some really bad legal advice when
you look with respect to understanding anti trust. Laws when
you look at the college football, playoff this is the
courts look at that as a multi billion dollar commercial,
marketplace not just a. Tournament they control THE tv, money

(01:02:44):
the recruiting, visibility, conference financial. Survival i'm talking about the
group of five right. Now, okay the group of. Five
they compete in the same division under the same, rules
and so the courts, say that's the same legal. Marketplace
if the power for schools want to coordinate some exclusion
that is unlawful restrative trade and from the championship, market

(01:03:09):
and the same principles that they lost The austin and
lost the Old bona abandon. Case you cannot restrict economic
opportunity without lawful competitive. Justification and so they they would
be running a. Foul they would be foolish for another
time to uh to to push the group of five

(01:03:32):
into anti trust, court because if they lose an anti
trust court and they misjudged like they, did with With.
Austin they're gonna have cord the inclusion of the group in.
Five you know, what you're gonna get a lot more
group of five teams. Involved they're gonna have force revenue, sharing,
okay just like they've ordered the players to get about twenty,
million they're gonna HAVE uh an anti trust. Court when you,

(01:03:54):
lose it's called treble, damagel treble. Damages what's treble just meets.
Triple so whatever injury you can show that you've you,
have then THE, uh the defendant owes you three times as.
Much you're gonna have a loss of postseason. CONTROL i
would just say this in the same way that the
THE ncaa should have just, said, hey let the players

(01:04:16):
have their freaking. Violin don't let this get exposed in the.
COURTS i would say to you, know for, ME i
just look at. It it's a ten team tournament and
there's two teams from the group of. Five let it
Be let those two teams. Play and if you if you,
say well that's bad, football don't. Watch just to Say

(01:04:36):
oregon's got a scrimmage and and it just had instead
of it being an intersquad, scrimmage they're gonna SCRIMMAGE. Jmu don't,
watch but don't try and ELIMINATE jmu because you're gonna have.
Consequences you had no, idea the idea and guess, what
you've already lived it.

Speaker 3 (01:04:51):
In the last five. YEARS i.

Speaker 13 (01:04:53):
Think so let's understand where THE ncaa and and where
the college football playoff would be with respect to the
anti trust, laws and don't incite those group of fives
to take the power for to.

Speaker 3 (01:05:06):
COURT i Think James madison's winning by.

Speaker 6 (01:05:08):
Thirty, hey, Listen i'd Rather i'd rather give them three.

Speaker 13 (01:05:15):
Teams if you want to pump it up to, Sixteen
i'd rather and and and not have to go to.

Speaker 3 (01:05:21):
Court so at any, EVENT i, HOPE i, Hope i'll
Just i'm. Not you, know think how you want.

Speaker 13 (01:05:28):
To you want to hate THE, jmu and and And
tulane is in, there, fine but there's a damn good
reason why they're in. There just put them in another
category in your. Mind just put them in a different.
Category it's a ten team powerful. Conference and guess, What, Uh,
Oregon oregon gotta buy uh With James madison And Ole

(01:05:50):
miss gotta buy with. Tull just think of it as
not four. Teams with the buy six, teams that's the.
Best that's WHAT i would.

Speaker 3 (01:05:56):
Recommend it's still better than just having four in so
and by the, way you, know the one thing they could.

Speaker 13 (01:06:04):
Do you, know if you look, up if you just
GOOGLE Nfl playoff on, procedures you can find it right
ON nfl dot. Com it says what happens if two
teams they call it two clubs? Tie what are three or?
More and there's literally twelve stages in, order in order
and how They the NCAA's problem is they need to do,
it like they need to say this is what the system,

(01:06:27):
is so that we don't have to wait for the,
committee like what are they doing this?

Speaker 3 (01:06:31):
Year what are they doing next?

Speaker 13 (01:06:33):
Year you just follow the program just like THE nfl
and have twelve steps on how to determine who's In.

Speaker 3 (01:07:41):
Buck, Hi, yes nine o'clock. Hour Mike holmbren joins us
here as we talk about yesterday's thirty seven to nine
win over The Atlanta falcons for The seahawks improved to
ten and three on the. Year score was tied coach
at halftime six to. Six, Boy i'll think can change

(01:08:01):
in The National Football.

Speaker 1 (01:08:02):
LEAGUE i think we saw two games. Yesterday you, know
because the first half you it'd be hard to believe
that would be the, score you, know but it, was
and that can happen in the. League but then they
they really had an impressive second. Half and this, team

(01:08:24):
and we've said it, before this team is really. Good
they're good and so when you see a first half like,
that you, go.

Speaker 9 (01:08:32):
Oh, gee what's?

Speaker 1 (01:08:33):
There is an away, game maybe they didn't sleep, right,
Whatever but then they came out in the second, half
we saw the team that they.

Speaker 5 (01:08:40):
Are.

Speaker 3 (01:08:41):
Yeah, ACTUALLY i wanted to talk about that because what's
What bucky AND i And ashley talked about to start
the show, was, boy if that wasn't an illustration of
a team that the season's going well where you do
have a few, hiccups but you figure out ways to overcome,
it figure it out in the four, quarters and then you,
know and then pull. Away Where atlanta is a bad

(01:09:04):
team and a bad, way probably with a coach who's
on his way, out and, man every single good play
they made got negated by a penalty or stepping out
of bounds or. SOMETHING i, mean it just to me
was an illustration of a good team having a good
season and a good way a bad team having a

(01:09:25):
bad season that's in a bad.

Speaker 1 (01:09:26):
Way that's that says it perfectly in my opinion. Too you,
Know atlanta they've lost some close games, now they've lost overtime,
games they've lost some, stuff but they haven't been able
to get over the hump that. Way and Then pennis got.
Hurt so but, yeah and The seahawks Have they are
really put together. Well AND i think the halftime adjustments

(01:09:49):
that took place really shows the difference kind of between
the two. Teams one of the, things BECAUSE i Think
mike does a tremendous job that. Way koubia you, know
is involved in that as. Well and the, players you,
know they, respond, well they're having a great. Season and you,
know you look if you project ahead or down the,

(01:10:11):
road you Know indianapolis now you know they Lost, jones you,
KNOW i mean it's they're going to have finished with
a very very powerful record and it'll come down to
a couple of games the forty nine ers in the.

Speaker 13 (01:10:26):
Rams, mike you mentioned the. Adjustments what did you see
that that impressed?

Speaker 3 (01:10:32):
You the first?

Speaker 1 (01:10:34):
Thing he and and again this is something we've talked about,
before AND i was a proponent of figuring out ways
to get in enjigma the. Ball, however in the first.
HALF i thought that seemed to be a point of,
emphasis but it wasn't working the second. HALF i think the.

(01:10:54):
Adjustment one of the adjustments they. Made they, decided, okay
let's get the other people, involved let's let's and then
that that in turn opened up some things For ingigma
in the second. Half so that was one. Thing and
Then shaheed to me that kickoff return set the tone

(01:11:15):
for the second. Half And i'm watching a poor uh
special teams coach For. ATLANTA i think that was the
guy on the. Sideline, yeah he was having a tough.
Day he was having a tough. Day and then the
then the kicker kicks the ball out of. BOUNDS i,
mean there's all sorts of stuff block And i'm, going,
oh you know the, yeah the block field field goal

(01:11:35):
and they show him over there and he, said, OH
i wouldn't BE i thought maybe today he might be
handed as bus.

Speaker 6 (01:11:42):
Ticket you, Know, so, coach how often is it like
you come in as an offensive minded guy and you're
you're setting, up you, know your scripted, plays and then
basically how you think you're going to attack your, opponent
like what defense you've seen on? Film and so if
all of a, sudden they're doing stuff that is to
counteract that they were maybe seeing one move, ahead like

(01:12:03):
they're going to try to do, This they're going to
try to do, This they're going to go TO jsn
and force it in. There if they have, to we'll
double team him or bracket him or do the cover
six like he was talking about, Earlier like how hard
is it in the middle of the first half to
switch gears if all of a sudden you realize they
knew what game PLAN i was coming, with or do
you just have to kind of try to stick with

(01:12:26):
that game, plan hope it, works and then make larger
adjustments at.

Speaker 1 (01:12:29):
Halftime you know WHAT i think most, PEOPLE i don't
think you should wait until. Halftime if you see something
that's that repetitive in the first, half there's, time you,
know if you have the, ball you, Know AND i
made mistakes that Way at. Times i'd get mad during a.
GAME i know that surprises, you BUT i get, that

(01:12:51):
and Then i'd say you maybe seeing the thing ON.
Tv i'd, say we're not running the ball, anymore no,
more and everyone all the other coaches on the, Go, well,
coach everyone shut, Up we're not running the ball. Anymore
we're gonna pasketball every snap we can't, run and then
we'd make the, adjustment you, know and hopefully it. WORKED

(01:13:12):
i Remember hugh telling me this, story, Though, Hugh i'll
let you tell the.

Speaker 3 (01:13:16):
Story.

Speaker 1 (01:13:17):
Okay we Played Jerry glanville In. Atlanta, yeah you, know
WHEN i was with the forty nine ers talking about. Adjustments,
yeah tell the story to. You, yeah so it's In.
Atlanta IF i get a detail, Wrong mike correct.

Speaker 5 (01:13:29):
Me.

Speaker 13 (01:13:29):
Please But Joe montana is the, Quarterback Jerry rice is
is the you, know in the prime of his. CAREER i,
mean then forty nine ers are. Perring they Got mike,
HOLMEGRIN i, mean just you, know playing things like a marionette.
Puppet and we HAD i say We i'm on The.
Falcons we had a cornerback by the name Of Charles

(01:13:49):
dimri And Jerry glanville was the head coach of The,
falcons and he had this this this he was.

Speaker 3 (01:13:57):
Just everything to, him was just macho.

Speaker 13 (01:13:59):
Football macho football that doesn't have to be smart, football
as long as it's tough and. Macho so he was
gonna Buy, golly he's gonna blitz and he's gonna play,
Man he's gonna. Blitz and he Had Charles dimri was
the game plan to Cover Jerry rice and, Uh montana
had five. Touchdowns was were four To? Rice FOR i,
KNOW i think HE i think mont had. Six five

(01:14:21):
of them WERE i think got. One, yeah, okay so
he had five touchdowns To rice and and he just
kept doing the same thing and dim and AND i
was so close to just walking down and just, Saying,
jerry dim can't Cover.

Speaker 1 (01:14:37):
Rice wait a, MINUTE i thought you did, that didn't
you tell?

Speaker 13 (01:14:41):
No, no, no, no, NO I i, know uh, well
it makes for a better. Story let's just say it like. That,
YEAH i WENT i went down and told the head
coach me as the backup. QUARTERBACK i, said, hey, coach
you're screwing this thing.

Speaker 1 (01:14:55):
Up, yeah tell, me tell me you're You're you're not
for real with This.

Speaker 3 (01:14:58):
JERRY i got good news and bad. News the good
news Is jerry That elvis is not yet here to
grab his. Ticket. Yeah the bad news is dim recan't Covered.
RICE i got to work on my embellishment.

Speaker 13 (01:15:12):
Game As mike points, out so, yes you, KNOW i
just well we cracked an egg.

Speaker 1 (01:15:17):
On but To bucky's, QUESTION i, think, yeah, yeah if
you wait until halftime and you know what's happening after
the first quarter or the first quarter and a, half
you're waiting too.

Speaker 3 (01:15:32):
Long you, know you know.

Speaker 1 (01:15:34):
What you can make adjustments at halftime because you have
the team, there you can make. Adjustments but if you
wait that, LONG i think you're wasting.

Speaker 3 (01:15:41):
Time, well let me ask you, both BECAUSE i, mean,
yes they spread the started spreading the ball around a
little bit more and it seemed to unlock. Something and
yet js and your number one receiver still made the
two big plays on the drive that sort of got
the offense in. Rhythm maybe they had started to get
in the rhythm in the late first, half but they

(01:16:04):
really started to click in the second. Half just chunk
play after chunk play after chunk. Play SO i, mean
between coach and quarterback, Here, Holm grin And, millen what
is the secret sweet spot for that? Too, yeah we
want to TARGET jsn as much as possible because he's

(01:16:25):
our best. Playmaker but if we lock in on him too,
much we're HURTING. Jsn, YEAH i think.

Speaker 1 (01:16:35):
You have the plays FOR jsn, obviously LIKE i had
the place For Jerry rice Or Sterling sharp or, whatever
and then you, yeah you go, there but you go
there when you think that play not necessarily the player
that play will work against what they're. Doing then the

(01:16:55):
quarter's up to the quarterback to make the. Decision and
most of the, time if the play is a good
play for against that, defense THAN jsn or, whoever, whomever
you're number one guy is going to see the ball
more often if you all of a sudden focus and
tell the quarterback we're calling this, play that's WHO i

(01:17:16):
want you to throw the ball. TO i think you
MAKE i think you make a little mistake. THERE i
really do you know you're calling a play that has
three or four. Options they're going to do different things on.
Defense you're teaching the quarterback to make good, decisions and
the guy will get his he'll get his, touches he'll
get his.

Speaker 13 (01:17:33):
Catches in the third, Quarter, chuck you had the thirty
yarder By jasn and then the twenty eight yard touchdown
on the first offensive. Drive so you know there's fifty
eight yards OF jsn receptions and so what happened on
both of those plays it was man to man what's

(01:17:53):
called cover one with a safety in the middle of the.
Field and they were pressing the, receivers so was taken
an inside, release which means when he takes an inside,
release then inbreaking routes are more likely to. Win so
the first one that he runs a deep What mike
would call a deep angle, cross and again he got

(01:18:17):
inside leverage on the, corner so that's going to be
a win for. Him and then the touchdown was some
people call it a, dig some people call it a,
dagger but it's an intermediate inbreaking. Route and again with
the corner to the, outside then he's running away from.
Him and so both of those are inbreaking. Routes, now

(01:18:39):
had they been zone coverage and they rolled over the,
top Then darnold's got an answer. Elsewhere but because it
was man to man and no real bracket in that,
regard then now it's green light to number.

Speaker 1 (01:18:54):
Eleven you know, what he impresses me a number of.
Things but then one thing in the. Game on that
one and breaking route he was, referencing he goes, up
he gets to the inside of the, defender and then
his his movement his first few steps away from the, defender.
Gimy he created a five Yard there is no way

(01:19:19):
that that guy could cover him that.

Speaker 3 (01:19:20):
Way you, know Well cup did that on his. Touchdown
That cup, touchdown he look like how Many Cup rams
touchdowns we've seen in the, past where he just sort
of comes it looks like he's going to, block then
all of a sudden just kind of does a pivot
to the outside and he's wide open out. There well
it's a man, beater and.

Speaker 13 (01:19:40):
Uh you know what's interesting is he Fit mike in
THE b gap between the guard and the. Tackle he
and so he kind of goes up and then because
he had a reduced split to the receiver on that.
Side so So cup's gonna basically you're Telling cup go
in in the gap Between Anthony bradford and And Abe

(01:20:00):
lucas and then just break to the. Flat but what
the key is is the receiver out there he's gonna
might have Been Cody, White i'm not quite might have
BEEN i gotta go back and look at, uh but
he he inside releases and that creates a pick on
the on the guys in man man and and so

(01:20:20):
that insert in THE b gap kind of helped the
spacing and helped create the. Pick so that's just beautiful
scheming that that that is target, Right. MIKE i mean
you're the red zone. Master that's just you, know anticipating
the coverage and designing to play and executing and play
when you get the.

Speaker 1 (01:20:36):
Coverage it's really something and you just pray That bradford
and what's the right tackle that they don't accidentally fall
On cup or because they have to peel him off the.
Field Does bradford look like he's a little? Bigger, yeah, yeah,
YEAH i made that. Comment they're big guys, now so

(01:20:59):
but it was.

Speaker 3 (01:21:00):
Beautiful.

Speaker 13 (01:21:00):
Yeah, well had it been a, Stunt, mike you, know
If cup was, trying if he if he ran right
into the teeth of a te that's tackle ender e
t and tackle, stunt there would have been a criss
cross and he might have been banged around by the big.
Guys but you know what they they they either caught
a break or they knew a. Tendency they weren't going

(01:21:21):
to get a. Stunt but that b gap was just wide.
Open it was exactly how they practiced it On, friday, Right,
Mike Red Zone, day and they that's How that's how
the scout team they gave him the. Look that's the
look they, wanted and that's the, look they got On sunday.

Speaker 1 (01:21:36):
And they had the right guy doing, it BECAUSE i
Think cup is really he's a great player and very
smart and knows how to do that.

Speaker 6 (01:21:42):
Stuff how'd you like just overall the run, GAME i
mean they Didn't Ken walker didn't really get Off charbon
he had that one big. Run they had the youngster
That jones kid came. In he looked crazy. Fast but then,
again at that point everything was working for.

Speaker 9 (01:21:57):
The for The seahawks.

Speaker 1 (01:21:57):
Offensively, well it seemed to me that they're pulling away
from the run first and we'll set up the pass
and all. That they went kind of the other. Way
but you, know if you're going to Give atlanta any
credit at, ALL i thought they did a decent, job
particularly in the first half of kind of doing doing

(01:22:20):
a good job versus the. Run but it they didn't
have a breakout game in the. Run But darnold in
the second half really lit it. UP i, thought you,
know he he passed the ball very, well and that's
how they moved the. Football and, listen depending on your
philosophy as a.

Speaker 9 (01:22:36):
Coach.

Speaker 1 (01:22:40):
You could be a run first coach or a pass first.
Coach but when it comes to calling the. Game you're
gonna call what you think is going to get you first,
downs what's going to, Happen and that's that's the fun
of calling a, game you, Know and so you can't
be that predictable as a play.

Speaker 3 (01:22:57):
CALLER i don't think it's. Crazy and they feel like
they play action passed now almost every.

Speaker 9 (01:23:04):
Play.

Speaker 3 (01:23:04):
Yeah, well and we've had a conversation back In week,
one like you play action passed one time and the entire,
Game and so what lesson? LEARNED i. Suppose AND i
Thought sam with his legs was very effective at, times
and he's got that athletic. Ability i'd kind of like
to see that a little bit. More but he scrambled
his way out of danger and for productive yardage. Yesterday,

(01:23:27):
yeah he.

Speaker 1 (01:23:28):
Shows you don't expect it from, him but he. SHOWS
i think he's pretty. Quick he's pretty, fast and he's
not a little, guy you. Know but, yes that was
an added part of it that led to a real
good functioning offense in the second.

Speaker 3 (01:23:41):
Half Mike homer And Hugh Millen monday morning quarterback session will.
Continue we got a lot more to discuss after the
seahawks thirty seven nine win over The Falcons. Yesterday Sports
