you started here on this Thursday morning, I will say
this though, you know I always make an observation. It
seems on the drive in do you ever have that
person at your office place that is wearing way too
much of the cologne or the perfume. Yeah, you know
that person. I know that person. I always think of
this very nice person I used to work with in Phoenix, Nina,

And for some reason, she always wore this like all
purple sweatsuit like once a week, okay, and very nice person,
very very and yet she you could smell her coming. Oh,
and it was just a lot, a lot of perfume.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
We used to work with someone in our old building
that you wore a lot of perfume. But it was
because she smoked and didn't want people to know she smoked. Oh.
I think that was maybe part of this too, was
like I'll cover it up with perfume, no one will know.
And it's like, actually I can smell that you smoke
through the curtains of your perfume.

Speaker 5 (02:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
And then she would come up and then she would
like deliver. She was like the traffic person, so she'd
deliver some stuff almost every day, and then it would
just stain the air. And it wasn't a bad smell,
it was just too much. Yeah you know what I mean. Uh, Well,
I think I've got somebody that topped her this morning,
because you know, you drive down the road, and you can,
like really, you can smell marijuana that clearly, and then

you can smell it for like the next hour, like
not hour and a half, but mile and a half.
I don't know what it is about somebody that's smoking
marijuana in their car, but if there's smoke gets into
your car, oh yeah, it permeates, yeah, and it just
stays with you. I had somebody's cologne do that today?

Who So somebody from their vehicle had so much cologne
on that it acted like marijuana and it wafted into
my car. And then I took that cologne smell all
the way down Mercer to work.

Speaker 5 (03:24):
What.

Now, that's a lot of cologne.

That that poor person, that man must have first good.
Probably it's fried nostrils, though, because if you're putting that
much on, you have no idea killed your nose.

Yeah, you had no idea. Yeah, how powerful it really is.

But you'd think, though, you still know how much you
should put on.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
Uh huh, you still know the squirts. You should know
the squirt level. Yeah, you should know. Everybody should know
their squirt level. I would think, but I don't know.
Maybe it's just like I don't know anything else in life, Like,
if you've built yourself up to be in a four
donut person, it probably did start at one, and then
you went one and a half, Yeah, and then you

went to you know, whatever the case might be, and
the next thing you know, you're a four donut person.

And probably if you wear if you've worn the same
Colonne all your whole life with your four donuts, I think, well,
I don't smell it anymore, right.

Yeah, so I'm sure that's what happened.

It's yeah, he's been wearing that colone since nineteen twenty three.

Apparently it's sympathy that I have for I don't know
what his name is, let's call him Clifford. Clifford, I
have sympathy for you. But yeah, somebody needs to let
Clifford know it's way too much. If your cologne can
go into another person's car, yeah, on the road and

then staying the other person. And it actually was a
good smell, smelled really good. So you've chosen a good one, Clifford. Uh,
it's just you are way over your squirt level.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
Yeah, you're oversquirted. Got to dial it back.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
As a little That's pretty much it. You could even
puff and walk through. If you want, you can do
a puff and a walk through. Yeah, I think probably.
I mean I did the but you know, those things
are pretty powerful. You can probably get away.

With just yeah, you can, although I will agree like
you need it, like evenly dispersed.

There's nothing you don't want, like right there, just on
the call, the only place you can smell it. Well, yeah,
I think I don't think men do the puff and
walk through, But then again probably that. I have not
been around a lot of men getting ready to go
out o that wear their cologne.

find out from Clifford. I would imagine they're a lot
more on time. That's I'll tell you that much.

ready to go here on this Thursday. We're gonna take
you till ten o'clock here today and then hand things

We're all over the sports world, and last night there

was no sporting event. I don't remember the last time
I didn't have a sporting event to watch, and it
is great. I mean, I love sports. I mean I
wouldn't be doing this, and considering how much of it
I watch, I don't really get sick of it.

Yeah, it is surprising, actually, yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
I mean there are times in the football season where
you get to Monday night and like, I just watched
a Friday night Big Ten game all day Saturday, all
day Sunday. And I don't typically do that, by the way,
I do take a break at some point during the weekend,
even football season, but there are some weekends where it's

like I can't miss that game, right, and that's stacked
on that game, right, and then I gotta watch the
Husky game. And so the next thing you know, you
have watched a triple header, and then you watch a
triple header on Sunday and seriously, Monday, I gotta watch
more football? Does happen? But considering how much I watch,
you know, I mean it's sort of like Clifford and
his cologne, like I'm watching too much, but I don't

(07:09):
even realize it because of how much I watched.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Yeah, like, if it wasn't it's only when it's not
there that all of a sudden you realize, wait a minute,
how much was I watching?

Speaker 1 (07:16):
Yeah? Yeah, exactly. I mean the doctor always says, I,
you watched too much.

Speaker 4 (07:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:23):
They always ask you how much? How many sporting events
are you watching each week? And I always lie, I'm
always like one to two a night.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
Why do we do that? Why can't we just be honest?
Because they judge with our doctor, they judge how many
sporting events we watch? Were always judging us. But so, yeah,
it was nice. It was nice. I didn't have to
worry about it. Went and had a dinner outdoors, you know,
had a just a couple of glasses of wine, nice meal,

sat outside sunset, so you got the It was a
warm until the sunset.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
Yeah, once the clouds came in, that got a little chile.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
Oh really Yeah. I wish I would have been out
for that woods. Yeah, but so it was nice. It
was nice not to have it. But of course there
was a sporting convent that happened last night. The Open
Championship got started at what ten thirty. Brady Cannon, who
we have on before every major, he did text me
and wanted to know where his pajamas were, so I'd

need to make that a tradition. Really need to remind
me and I'll try. Yea, yeah exactly, and we'll see
if we can get to that. But yes, it's underway
the Open Championship in Southport, England at Royal Birkdale. Alex
Smally is leading with one hole to go in his
first day at five under, but some pretty solid scores

(08:45):
so far. Of course, isn't playing too difficult. It feels
like I didn't watch a lot of it, to be frank,
but then again, it did start at ten thirty last night.
Start at ten thirty? Right? Oh no, how many Mariner
games I'd be sticking around for if they all started
at ten thirty.

Speaker 3 (09:00):
Well, it depends on how they're playing.

Speaker 1 (09:02):
That's true, Yeah, that's true.

Speaker 3 (09:03):
I was like, well, if they're playing a lot of
the ones I've seen, definitely wouldn't.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
We're gonna have updates for you live from Royal Birkdale
twenty after and we'll start them right away today. We'll
get to one at six twenty here this morning. Scotty
Scheffler is at three under. At this point I thought
Rory was going to win this tournament to kind of
close out what has been a really eventful year for him.

(09:29):
But I'm not even seeing him anywhere near the I
don't know if he's off yet. Oh he hasn't even
teed off yet. Yeah, there's still a lot of the
seeing if he has or hasn't.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
I don't see his name there either, so oh yeah,
there he is.

Speaker 1 (09:42):
He off at seven fifty retire. Yeah he's done. Yeah,
he said I can't with this all right, So he hasn't.
So he hasn't even teed off yet. So there are
a lot of guys let yet to hit the course
at Royal Birkdale. But Scotty Scheffler is at three under.
And I brought this up briefly at the end of
the show. Yes, and I'm not sure Ashley was agreeing

with me on it. But this is not really criticism.
I'm not really criticizing either of these elite golfers McElroy
or Scottie Scheffler. But there was a piece of audio
that made its way around about they were asked about
how do you think you're gonna feel one hundred years
from now about your legacy? And they both looked at

(10:23):
each other and they were like, we're gonna be dead.
Who cares, yeah, and that was sort of their reaction
to it. And you know, honestly, that is the truth.
But it really is. And this isn't anything that I
am internalizing. This is me being in sports talk radio
since I was nineteen years old, and so I've watched

(10:45):
a few careers in my life unfold, and to me,
it is and Ror is not exactly a young athlete anymore,
but considering the sport of golf, he still has. I mean,
you could argue he's still in his prime and he's
got a lot of golf left left in his career.
But it's the kind of comment that somebody that is

(11:07):
on the top of their game, that has made a
mountain of money, that you know, all the girls still
you know, are interested in, and the type of guy
that you know still has his young kids that run
toward him after every tournament. Like things are really good

(11:27):
for Scottie Scheffler and Rory McElroy to the point now
that they can they don't have to really worry about
some reporters feelings and they can pretty much say on
the podium that's a stupid question or that's ridiculous, and
I don't care, and they can be dismissive. That's the

(11:48):
stage they're in. And I've watched plenty of athletes in
their prime sit there when they're on top of their game,
they're on top of their financial moneymaking ability, they have
accomplished a lot already. They still have a lot to
go if they want to. But a lot of them
act like legacy, I don't care about legacy. I don't care.

(12:11):
I don't care about legacy, And they give that attitude
like I could walk away from this game right now
and then all of a sudden, and I don't care
who it is. With the exception of like Robert Smith
and Barry Sanders and Patrick Willis and a few guys
that shocked the world by stepping away from the game
when they had a lot left in the tank. Those

(12:32):
are guys, those are that's a different breed. But the
Barry Bonds of Barry Bonds at twenty eight was saying
I don't need this game anymore at twenty eight. Then
we had to kick him out of the league at
forty three because he wouldn't go away. I mean, all
this scandal and all of this controversy, and he had
to be told go away before he went away, not

(12:54):
publicly but privately. But it happens to so many of
them that when they're in their prime, they're very dismissive
about things like legacy. And then all of a sudden,
the sports world not as many people are attending their
press conferences, and they're not at the top of the
leader board much anymore, and they're not winning every tournament

(13:16):
or they're not a factor on Sundays as much anymore.
And now all of a sudden, their wife doesn't think
it's as cool a thing to be married to Rory
McElroy now that he's not as not as in demand
as he once was. And his kids are now sixteen
and seventeen, and they've got green hair, and they're angry
that you weren't around for my youth because you were

(13:38):
out playing golf all the time. I mean, this is
what happens. And then the next thing, you know, you
know what happens. Then they start putting everything in perspective,
and now they start missing that prime and now they're
like out to prove I still can do this, I'm
still the best. And now they do start thinking about legacy.
And then the next thing, you know, they can't let

(14:00):
it let go. Then they can't walk away from the game.
It's happened. Wait, and I'm not saying that's gonna happen
to Rory McElroy. I'm not saying that's gonna happen to
Scotti Scheffler. Maybe they are two that have everything in
perfect perspective. I'm just saying, be careful being snied about
that and being dismissive about that, because most athletes do

(14:22):
reach a point where you are at the end of it,
and then you do think about legacy, and then all
of a sudden, that's all you're about. I mean, Tiger
Woods keeps trying to come back from thirty different injuries
because he wants that one last glorious moment. Michael Jordan

(14:44):
came back and played for the Wizards. I mean he
walked away from the game at age twenty eight to
go play baseball. For goodness sake. Every single boxer retires
at twenty five years old, and they think that they
don't need to do it anymore, and yet Floyd Mayweather
is still fighting on occasion. So it is something this
sports world like when you are at the top of it.

(15:07):
It is a drug. It is something that a lot
of us can't relate to. And then when that drug
starts being taken away from you, you start having withdrawal
and the next thing you know, you do. It does
hit you hard when you're forty five years old, fifty
two years old, maybe as a golfer and you're struggling
to make the cut at the latest major routinely, and

(15:31):
all of a sudden, you're like, legacy is all that
I need, That's all I'm about right now. So I
hope that they're the exception, but typically the rule is
that it will catch up to them and those questions
about legacy will become very important to them. Not to
mention not worthy of being just outwardly dismissed or your

(15:53):
eyes roll or you tell a reporter that's a dumb question,
because it will matter to them at some point down
the line, and if not, they're one of the exceptions.

Speaker 3 (16:02):
I think part of it was the brandness and the
timing of the question. You know, you're getting ready. It's
the day before the Open Championship, and to have that
question was probably through them for a loop. And then
in Rory's case, I think specifically he doesn't want to
think about the mark he has to leave on the
game because of what the PGA Tour, the positions the

(16:24):
PGA Tour has put him in. I think if you
would have asked him that question two years ago, three
years ago, when he when they kind of pushed him
to be the face of the PGA Tour, when Live
Golf came in and Rory had to be the one
speaking and trying to stand up for PGA Golf, I
think he would have thought, Yeah, I want this to
be my legacy that I helped secure PGA, you know,

(16:46):
the PGA Tour and make sure that we had this
continuing and that it didn't leave because some other group
with boatloads of money came in and tried to ruin everything.
And if I helped save that or I help keep
the PGA Tour with the PGA is supposed to be,
then that's great. But then he kind of got screwed
over in that moment, and so I think at this
point he's like, I'm just worried about me and my golf,

(17:09):
and that's it because I've already been put in these
positions where I was having to be something more.

Speaker 1 (17:14):
Yeah, that's fair, and I'm not being critical of Yeah,
I'm not. I think every prominent athlete that's had as
much success as they are, they have the same notion.
I'm just saying more likely than not. Before it's all sedient,
before you're done playing, Yeah, legacy and what you left
behind will become more important than anything. It will become

(17:37):
more important than the next buck you make. It'll become
more important than the next cute girl that bats her
eyes at you. It'll become more important than just about
anything that you accomplished as a professional athlete will be
your legacy. And I've seen plenty of guys in their
prime making boatloads of money that thought it didn't matter

(17:59):
and were dismiss about it. And those are the ones
that you can't get out of their sport. It's like,
go away, You've already you've accomplished everything you can accomplish,
and yet they're holding on for the last strands of
legacy and to prove one more time. I'm a vest.

Speaker 3 (18:16):
Yeah, I'm a mist And luckily for golf, they can
go to the senior Tour so they don't have to
leave right away. But I hear what you're saying, and
I wonder if that a lot of that just has
to do with age, and when you're young, you just
don't think, like I worry about what I'm leaving behind.
And then as you get older and you start it
starts to hit you. You're like, gosh, yeah, thousand.

Speaker 1 (18:32):
They both know they've accomplished a lot. I got a
lot of money. I'm still either at or near the
top of my game, and I got a lot of
great golf left. Yeah, it's when it starts to slip
away from You're like, oh, wow, I didn't know that
that last major. I didn't know that major I won
seven years ago was going to be my last one. Yeah.

(18:53):
That then it starts to kind of soak in on you.
So I just say, I've heard this before. I've heard
it before, Scotty, I've heard it before, Rory. Maybe you'll
be there are there are outliers. There are guys that
have stepped away at the exact right time, and like
the most important things in life are my family and

(19:13):
my wife and my you know, and and my mental
well being and my health. Those are the There are
guys that do that, but more, but there have been
a lot more that eventually do sort of worry about
their legacy before they can step away. All right, let's

or not. Yeah, but yeah, it's like crushed into the console. Okay,

Not a big issue. We're good, We're good to go,
and it is time for the ABC's of the MS. Yes,
so we allow the alphabet to be a guide to
a daily Mariner's segment. We never know where it's going
to take us. And we left off yesterday at the
letter k K is for killer. And I do hesitate
with this because my natural urge is to say, you know,

what would be a killer is if the Mariners get
off to a slow start in the second half. But
I always have to keep in the back of my mind,
I've done this before this season like five times, and
I have done this in the past every season, like
five times. And you're sure that there's this crux, this

(22:39):
moment in the season where all right, now's the time
where you got to seize this opportunity and if you don't,
you're screwed. And the Mariners almost and I will say
almost always prove us wrong because obviously we haven't made
the playoffs. Every single year, but we here recently, but

(23:02):
they have contended every single year here for the last
five six seasons, and so they have these moments in
the year where you're just sure, like this is where
you've got to take hold of this season. All Right,
you've farted around for nearly one hundred games, but here
we are. You've had this big giant break here at

(23:24):
the All Star break, only Randy didn't have a full
week off to get ready for the second half of
the season. And you've got the San Francisco Giants, who
couldn't have had a more nightmarish season this year. And
you've got the Cincinnati Reds who've been fading fast, and
you've got them at home for the next six days
before you go to Texas and show the Texas Rangers

(23:48):
who the team to beat is in the American League West.
You'll have a four game series in Texas. So these
next six games feel important. Probably won't be, but they
do feel. It feels like you can't fumble these. It
feels like you at least got to go four and two.
But obviously baseball math works differently than any other math,

(24:11):
and so yeah, I'm sure they could go one in five.
Oh I know they can't one in five and then
rally from it, but it does feel it makes sense.
You know, it's logical that they could really benefit from
a good start to the second half, and it will
feel like a killer if they don't seize this opportunity

(24:34):
to get off to a great start in the second
half when the schedule aligns for them so favorably.

Speaker 3 (24:39):
Yeah, especially as you said coming out of the All
Star break, you just lost five of your last six
before you went into the break, but you ended on
a win. So take that for whatever it's worth and
turn it into something to come out of this break,
because at this point, honestly, you have no excuses for
playing the way you've been playing. Step it up, put
your big boy pants on.

Speaker 1 (24:57):
Let's go. Speaking of a big boy pants, Robbie Ray
is going to be pitching against the pants. Tight pants. Yeah,
everybody's in a tight pants. That's the song. We got
to play that. Yeah. I don't think he's pitching until Sunday,
so we might have to jump ahead of that. We
might have to. Yeah, Robbie Ray, he'll probably get traded
at the deadline. L is for laz As in laz Montes.

(25:22):
This is This is gonna be an interesting storyline to
follow between now and the trading deadline. Obviously, no one's
in a rush to hit the trading deadline to get
active in the trading deadline. We are at July sixteenth,
the deadline's August third this year, so you got a
good three weeks remaining here before you know, it's crunch time, right,

(25:43):
and so nobody's racing to it. And partly because the
market's not set. We've only got seven sellers on the
entire market in all of Major League Baseball, which is outlandish,
and it has everything to do with how down a
first half the American League had, so nearly everybody in
the American League is still alive. The Tigers in the
Red Sox couldn't have been worse for most of the

(26:04):
first half of the season, but because nobody ran away
and hit from them, the Tigers in the Red Sox
started playing better going into the All Star break, and
lo and behold, they find themselves back in the race.
So the trade market is not set, and so this
is going to give Jerry and Justin some time to
evaluate a guy like Las Montes. And I do remind

(26:25):
everyone what Justin told me in spring training. We joked
around about Las Montes hitting forty home runs this year,
and it was mostly a joke, not that he wasn't
capable of it. And Justin Hollander told us, I can
promise you if Las Montes hits forty home runs this year,
some of those will be in a Mariner uniform. That's

(26:45):
what he told us. Well, Las Montes is at twenty
six home runs this year, twenty five in Arkansas and
now one in Tacoma. He is not hitting all that
well in Tacoma. He's three for twenty seven at Tacoma,
so it's hitting one of it and he only has
that one home run. So obviously the veteran pitchers, those
four A veteran pitchers with all their junk, have been

(27:09):
a little different of a challenge for Las Montes. He
hasn't exactly hit the ground running at Triple A. But
if he does make an impact, man, what is that
going to do to Jerry and Justin's plans for the
trade deadline, Because all of a sudden you're gonna be
running out of roster spots. You got Brendan Donovan hopefully

(27:30):
getting activated soon. If Montes ends up being a piece.
Now you get you've already got too many left handed hitters.
So then then what happens because somebody's got to go
in that process. I mean, we already have a numbers crunch,
like West and Wilson's going to be let go before tomorrow,

(27:53):
Julio will be activated. But you also have Rob Reschneider
and that mystery, Yeah, how injured was he? Really? Is
he ever going to be back on the roster? Do
you want him back on the roster? But you start
introducing a Donovan and Montes back into this situation when
you've already called up the Colt Emerson and all of

(28:15):
a sudden, that roster that you had envisioned to have
for the second half of the season. There's a numbers
crunch here, and then on top of it, you're thinking
about adding a piece at the trading deadline that's going
to cost somebody else their jobs. So it's gonna be
interesting to see Las Montes will dictate whether or not.
I mean, he can force the issue. You've got to

They always have somebody in your face. Am I seeing

I think Argentina's game plan is when the ball goes
back to the goalkeeper, they will press for the next

Kind of get back, they reset, they maintain possession of
the ball, they break and then maybe there's another back
pass and they go and press. So yeah, they're not
a possession based team, really is. When you think of

keep the ball, and things have changed in the last
basically ever since they figured out all they had to
do was get the ball to Messi in the last

World Cup and they're gonna win, so in my opinion,
so maintaining possession of the ball isn't really.

They're happy to be those dogs in those dog fights.

press and just let you play. But England kind of

for England. He was high up the pitch which made
it really difficult for Argentina to.

Get out of their own third.

And then all of a sudden you go up one
nothing and you completely change your tactics and you bring
on three defenders after that, and you play with five
in the back instead of sticking with your original formation. Well,
all that does is it allows a full court press
basically from Argentina for the next forty minutes. And in
a World Cup with a team like Messi, you cannot

do that. You can't just sit back and defend. It
doesn't work out. It's the prevent defense where it seems
like it never works out for the team that is
protecting the lead, and certainly didn't in yesterday's game. And
Argentina does what Argentina does and what they've done the
entire tournament is go down or be tied late in
the game, and then all of a sudden, bang bang,

and it's Argentina off to the finals once again.

I you know what, as you're describing it, I'm like, yeah,
that's exactly what happened. They let Argentina when they're up
one to oh, they let Argentina dictate the pace, dictate
the game. Argentina was getting a lot of good looks
barely missing, and it just won after another and it
eventually caught up to them. So if it was so obvious,

I mean, how much criticism should the head coach be
facing for that strategy.

Well, what's hard is that the game against Mexico, they
go down to Azteca, they go down to Mann, they
bring on a couple defenders and somehow Jude Bellingham has
one of the games of his life and gets them
out of there with a victory.

They sat back in that game because they really had to.
They were playing a man down. But something switches in
your brain when you're playing a man down is actually
everyone on the field tries like ten or fifteen percent harder,
and it's really hard to beat a team that is

The opposite happened yesterday for England. They thought that this

was going to be another Okay, we scored our goal
against Mexico, like against Mexico, we've gotten our goal against Argentina. Well,
let's just sit back. We'll bring on a six to
seven defender. At some point, we'll bring on a couple
other defenders. But that isn't what worked for them in
that game. And every game is very different, and for
some reason, Thomas Toucle saw that, you know, we're going

to kind of stick with our guns and we're going
to bring on some defenders. But there's a psychological impact
when you're in a game like that for everyone on
the field is as soon as you're a player on
the field. Let's say you're Anthony Gordon, for example, is
a left winger, left forward. He gets taken off, everyone
on the field is expecting attacking player to come on
to replace him. Well, another defender comes on the field.

Everyone goes into a mind shift of I have to defend.
Now we're defending, no matter if the coach has played
the same You're defending at the end of the day
because you brought on the defender. There's a reason why
these seasoned veterans on those teams are defenders. They are
not attackers. So it's a complete mental mind shift as well.

There's a term brad in American football, and I'm sure
you follow and I'm sure you know it, but they
call it a dime And that's when a quarterback just
throws the perfect pass like there's no defense, Like you
had it the receiver defended, but he threw it in
a spot that the only spot that he could have

able to do that with your arm as a quarterback.
But I don't know if I thought it was pop
with your feet kicking a ball. And yet Leno Messi yesterday,

up starting about five games Because Takario davis was out

along he was listed at six. Three washington has them
listed at six foot So i'm not sure where the

Height he does have the length that you look. For
he's one of, those you, know lanky guys out there

say he looked like one of their better players during, Spring.

one of the better cover corners out there in the

a third. SAFETY i think he started Against Ohio state
and played most of that. Game really, fast really, physical big.
Hitter another guy who was a four star. Recruit another
guy from the state Of, arizona by the, way who
they were really excited about last. Year and, now, yeah

as long as he's healthy at free. Safety so they're,
FEELING i think pretty good about the different skill sets
that sort of compliment each. Other there between McLoughlin And Dillard.

Allen Is Dillar allen as good as candidate for biggest jump?
FORWARD i, MEAN i know he had a sensational year
as a, freshman but that experience under the, belt full
year on campus with the program and he just flashed last.

biggest jump forward as a football player this?

and it was looked pretty obvious like he was going
to be their third safety and he jumped over a
couple of guys with a little more experience and kind
of had Asked Ryan, walters or maybe it Was Taylor
may's about, just, hey, well what is it you see
in him that makes you want to give him the?
Opportunity and it was like the athletic, traits, right the,
athleticism so it was.
