All right. Well, we're delaying the inevitable because it's time
to talk about a baseball team, which you know they're
not gonna win them all. And lately they've been playing better,
but you go to Detroit and you feel like, okay,
we kicked that last one at home against the Mets,
and Tigers have been struggling a little bit, even though
we know they're a pretty good team on paper. After all,
(07:36):
they took us to the mat to you know, in
the playoffs last year. We know how good they are,
and they've very narrowly knocked us out before we even
got to the American League Championship series. So we know
they can play ball there in Detroit, but they've had
a bad season to this point, and we didn't want
them getting well against the local baseball team. And yet
(07:56):
they seem to have gotten well. They take two out
of three. But frustratingly so the Mariners seem to own
that game yesterday. They seem to have it under control
the entire way. And then and then just some weirdness
which certainly we're going to dive into here on the
(08:18):
radio program right now. And look, there's the Andre's Munjos
element of this that certainly comes to mind. And I
am going to spend some time really just I'm going
to spend an entire fat segment today, one of our
fat segments today talking about Andres Munos because obviously he's
not on his game. But I think, Ashley, you know
(08:40):
where I'm going with this, because my frustrations fell a
lot more at the feet of Dan Wilson yesterday than
they did at Andres Munjos. And you know why, I'm
sure because I talked about it so frequently.
Speaker 4 (08:54):
Yeah, you can't have a guy pitch so infrequently and
then expect him to be sharp.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
That's the way I feel. That's the way Andres feels.
And I don't understand why we can't. I mean, we've
got all of this numerology that we pour over, this
analytics and this nerderama that we employ down the street
at T Mobile, and yet just the basic principle of
(09:18):
does the how when is our closer at his best?
And it's not every five six days. I can tell
you that. And he's even told you that.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
That's the thing is he said it himself, this is
this isn't good for me.
Speaker 1 (09:32):
We've discussed it ad nauseum. And I'm not saying that
Dan Wilson's listening to us and making his game plans
based off of us, No, but enough people have discussed it.
It's out there. I don't know how it is not
more obvious. And so I'm gonna lay some at Andre's
Muno's feet. I mean, get the job done. Why why
do you struggle when you've been given so much rest?
(09:56):
But one thing was very obvious about yesterday, and that
was he was fresh. He was throwing harder than he
had all season long. He was throwing one on one,
one hundred and two mile per hour fastball that was back.
So there's no doubt that he was fresh from all
the excess rest that he has been given as of late.
But he was also not anywhere close at times to
(10:17):
the strike zone, which shows you that he was out
of rhythm. He was out of his sink. And that
comes from him being so used so infrequently, and it
keeps happening over and over this season, and there were
plenty of times that Dan had the opportunity to use
him over the course of the weekend. Hey, if we
(10:38):
really are starting to wonder if he should be our closer,
then let's not make him our closer. I'm saying every
single night, let's not have the idea that the only
time we ever put Andres Munnos in a game is
when we have the lead in the ninth, and yet
that seems to be the way that Dan Wilson is operating.
(10:59):
He should pitched Saturday. We were up four to nothing.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
Why wouldn't we use him then?
Speaker 1 (11:04):
And I get it, some closers don't. They don't perform
as sharply when there's not a save on the line. Well,
let's start start getting him out of that, you know,
four to nothing. That seemed like a perfect time since
we hadn't used him in four days, to throw him
into a game. It's not like we were blowing them away.
You use Gabe Spire and right now he's as valuable
as Andre's munyos, if not more so. In that game
(11:27):
that was an opportunity. And then on Friday even I mean,
I know we were down two, but that's a bloop
and a blast away. And for whatever reason, Dan Wilson
believes that if you're down to the game's over and
we're gonna throw our worst pitcher out there, as opposed to, hey,
we're down to we're a bloop and a blast away,
(11:49):
and we got to get Andre some work. I have
not you. We had a day off on Thursday. I
didn't use him on Wednesday I haven't used him in
five days, and he's told me, he's told me he
needs more usage. We can't. We can't keep going five
or six days without using somebody that obviously relies on
that rhythm. So why not throw them into Friday? We
(12:10):
had the momentum in that game. We're a bloop and
a blast away from tying the damn thing up. By
then we throw. And I don't mean offence to Alex Hoppy,
but he is the last guy in our bullpen that
we would use. And those guys are called mop up guys.
And mop up to me is when you're up six
(12:31):
or down five, you know, not when you're within a
bloop and a blast of tying the damn thing up,
you've got momentum. The Tigers have had trouble with their
bullpen all season long. Why not use Munno's Friday, keep
the score at two runs, keep him in his rhythm.
And there is and I don't know where it is written,
(12:51):
because I believe me, I've started to break down the numbers,
which we'll get into at seven o'clock today. He's actually
better on no day's rest than he is on two
days rest or three days rest or four days rest
or five days res definitely five. Yeah, And so I
put a lot of it on Dan Ashley. I think
(13:14):
that he's not managing and you know what, shame on
andres that he's not better equipped to handle this he
should be at this point in his career. But I
also think that we do all of this number crunching
cons have all We have a phone book worth of
data that we hand over a manager at the beginning
(13:36):
of every game, pour over this data like never before
in the history of sports, and yet we can't figure
out a fundamental thing that the yahoo's down the road
on KJR have been telling you for two months. You
cannot let this guy go five six days without pitching
because he gets out of his rhythm. He's told you everybody,
(14:00):
He's told you, and yet we keep falling into the
same trap over and over and over. I'm tired of
our manager only using our closer when it's a safe situation.
It's driving. It's driven me up a wall. And for
those of you that thought I was going to come
on the air and backpedal on this a little bit
and have to admit, oh, well, we got to make
a change. No, yeah, we do have to make a change.
(14:22):
And I'm not talking about the manager position, but the
way he handles Munyos is what needs to change, not
Munyos well.
Speaker 4 (14:30):
And it should say it in that telephone book of information, right,
I guarantee you it shows how poorly he does in
those exact situations.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
But more importantly than that, as you mentioned, he has
said it himself.
Speaker 4 (14:41):
You have to take the word of the person who
you are relying on to go into a situation and
what they are and aren't comfortable with. And if Munho
says I'm not pitching enough, then he's not pitching enough.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
That's it.
Speaker 3 (14:54):
It doesn't matter what your book says, but your book
could back it up. So you've got two things.
Speaker 4 (14:59):
You've got your book that you really so heavily on
and you've got a person saying it from their actual mouth.

Use me more, use me mo, so use him more.

Okay. So here's the compromise on all of this. Let's
not treat him as a you're our only closer. Let's
do that if that's what okay, So some people want
him remove from the closer position. I don't want to
go that far because I think that when he's right
he's still our best guy, and I got the data
to prove that, which I will at seven oh five.

But if we don't have to use him as our
only closer, why can't this be the compromise? Why can't
he be used on Friday down two and then if
you don't want to use him the next day. Why
couldn't we have faith that Matt Brash could get a save,
or Jose Ferrer could get a save, or Gabe Spire
(15:50):
the way he's pitching right now game Spier's pitching better
than anybody out of our bullpen right now, why would
we think that they can't get a save? And so
how is that as a compromise, we will use Andres
Munjos in save situations, but he doesn't have to be
the only guy that gets us saves. And that way,
(16:12):
we can use Munyos in other ways during the course
of the game that don't necessarily reflect him getting a save.
I mean, all this analytics stuff that they did was
to point out that wins, we shouldn't be fighting for
a pitcher to get a win, and we shouldn't be
fighting for a closer to get a save. Those statistics
(16:35):
in the big picture don't really tell the whole story
of how to win that actual game. That's what analytics
are driven by. And so we have an analytics driven organization,
and yet we have a manager that is still trying
to get his closer a save every time he takes
the field, and I think that that's silly. So I
think the compromise is in order to get him more
(16:56):
work that we don't worry if we want to use
him on a Friday and don't want to use him
on back to back days, which I think silly, Then
we don't worry that Munjos is not available for us
on Saturday because we used him to get some work
on Friday. Will use for Air, We'll use Brash the
(17:16):
next day, Will you Spire the next day? And so
I think that this organization right now, Dan and the
front office are caught between the numbers and silly season
right now. And the end result is the mess that
you created yesterday, because we haven't even talked about the
Kriswell situation. What the f was that you had Bizardo
(17:38):
up and loose and ready to go, and then you
decided to wait un inning and then put Spire in
the game after Kriswell couldn't get anybody out in the step.
Use your best dude for them, help use Munos there
for goodness sake.
Speaker 4 (17:53):
Well, especially because we know that these guys don't care
when they go in or what inning it is. They
just want to take care of bus when they go in.
Speaker 1 (18:01):
You had Bizardo up, he was already ready, and they.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
Got cute Well playing chess when they're playing checkers.
Speaker 1 (18:08):
Well, Spire, we could say for the top of the order,
because that's when we want him in. And so let's
see if we can squeeze Kriswell even though Bizardo's already loose.
We'll we'll get Chriswell up. He'll face seven, eight, nine
in the order, and maybe we can steal three outs

and then have Spire face the top of the order,
and then we say Bizardo for and then we can
say Bizardo for tomorrow. And even if Chriswell can't get
those three guys out, then Spire comes in. Well, then
we'll say Bizardo for the eighth. And that's a total
waste of Spire, because now if Chriswell allows any traffic

at all, Spire comes in, he might only face one
batter because we refuse, do you use him in a
second inning after he's already been up. We don't like
to let our relievers sit and then go back into
the game. And that's a total waste of your best
reliever right now. And gave Spire stop getting so cute
with it. Put Bizarto in the damn game. He was
(19:16):
ready to come into the game. Put him in the seventh,
save Spire for the eighth, and Munjos for the ninth.
What is wrong with that? And instead Munyos that comes
in hasn't pitched in six days, and instead of having
a four run lead at that point or a three
run lead at that point, is dealing with a run
run lead. And then he walks his first guy and
you know it's, ah no, I don't have it. And
(19:37):
he walks the second guy and even the hit wasn't
that sound of a hit, but it found green grass
and both runs score and you lose the baseball game.
I mean, that was as botched as a three run
lead in the seventh can be botched. And that's not
all on Andre's Munos, some of it, but it's not

all on Andre's moon well.

And definitely the parts that happened when he wasn't in
the game. Definitely not on him.

Baltimore Orioles have been playing a better brand of baseball lately.
They are scoring a lot of runs recently, which is

what they're designed to do. They got off to another
terrible start this year, but they've battled their way back
and into wild card contention. And that's where the Mariners
will be tonight in Baltimore, Maryland, for a game series
against a team that is smoking offensively right now. First

invited or accepted what six teams. Six teams are there,
West Virginia, Troy, Ole, Miss, North Carolina, Georgia, and then
last night, in a thriller, Texas came back one over
Oregon to knock the Ducks out. And so six teams
have their places in the eight team College World Series.

They'll determine the other two today starting at eleven o'clock.
Both Saint John's and Alabama and Kentucky, ECUMI, Kansas and
Oklahoma had their games suspended because of weather. So they'll
play a game and a half each of them today
and they'll settle this and by the end of the
day we will have our eight teams for the College

Mariners Morning After. We do have a loss to discuss.
The MS trying to take two out of three from
the Detroit Tigers yesterday, and well damn it, they should have.

They led for the most of the game. The entirety
of the game. Frankly took a one nothing lead early on,
Detroit didn't come back to tie it at one, but
then in the sixth, a two run inning for the Mariners.
They were up four to one. At one point Luis
Castillo seemed to be cruising. The bullpen should have been
completely rested. I mean, I guess Matt Brash can only

pitch once every millennium, but you should have added, you know,
your guys good to go to close out a three
run lead. And instead, Dan Wilson opted for Cooper Criswell
in the seventh instead of Bizardo, who was loose and
ready to go, and he ends up not getting out
and then a single batter out of the three that

he faced. So the Tigers cut into the lead in
the bottom of the seventh to make it four to three.
It would remain that way until the ninth Andres Munos,
who we haven't seen since nineteen fifty five, then came
out of the dugout to try to close things out
for the Mariners, and he just did not have his
good stuff, and you could tell pretty early on two

wild wild walks put runners on. Then they ended up
at second and third, and you had two outs, you
were one out away. But here came Detroit, their red
hot rookie Kevin McGonagall and Andres Munnos trying to close
it out for the Mariners by drive and it's right

off the Young's glove. But kiss Tree in Perez come
at home, the Tigers get off. Aaron Goldsmith on the
call Mariners television. Yes, the Tigers do walk it off
for a five to four victory that frankly they should
have never had. Andre's Munos blows his fifth save this season,

so obviously he's not having a good year to this point.
Maybe not as bad as it looks on the surface.
We're going to discuss that more at seven o five.
But this was just not a game that you should
have blown, and blown it as exactly what happened. Yeah,

really kept that prettyquil I had there for the time
he was out there, and uh, you know a lot
of our offense to get going a little bit, and
they did.

Runs early was big, and uh, you know, being able
to add on there towards the end, get that board
run this huge.

it's it's tough there when you when you lose that
kind of a game. But you know, the guys I

Dan, what did you see that was going on with
Mooney there in the night?

Yeah, it just looked like, you know, the command wasn't there,

you know, as we know, walks can be can can.

Hurt and those you know, those two came around to
hurt it. But you know, it looked like just have
a hard time finding the command. Man, it really is
just a script and it doesn't even matter if it
applies to the game we just.

Watched because the bullpen came out and pitched really well.

Yeah, that's what he just said.

Yeah, and then he thinks that like, oh wait, that
was part of the script. Oh yeah, they didn't except

except for blowing the game. They blew the game, right,
that was on the bullpen. So yeah, I don't know.
I'm not sitting here saying that you got to call
some Kriswell out and say Munio's cross. Obviously we're not

saying suggesting that. But we could stop short of saying
the bullpen was great.

Honest and just say the bullpen struggled today. I mean
even that would be more real.

And it wasn't just the bullpen, and it wasn't just
I didn't like I didn't like the way Dan managed
the game yesterday. That's nothing new for me. But the
team played slow, they didn't finish. You know, we scored
our four runs. That should be enough. We're done. You know,
you can keep scoring. You don't have to stop. You

don't have to keep it close. You could keep scoring
to idiotic base running blunders by Oh not necessarily, I
would take that back. Naylor is always trying to read
the situation right, and he just left a fraction too early.
Will Vess just held onto the ball and he thought
he had him read and his move read and everything.

He does that all the time, So we can't get
angry when it does cost him a Rose Arena though,
getting caught off the bag, you know, especially after Naylor
just got picked off, maybe that's not a great look.
Maybe losing two base runners in back to back.

Hitters, maybe we just avoid that in the future.
Speaker 1 (29:53):
You know, three for eleven is not terrible with the
runners in scoring position. But again, there were so many
other opportunities hit him eleven to six. There were so
many other opportunities to pull away in this game, so
that played a hand in it. Also, challenges continue to
be challenging. Las Diaz was terrible yesterday, terrible behind the plate,

and yet we still somehow go I think, oh for two.

In our challenges yesterday, and then we're operating the bullpens,
operating without the ability to challenge Farrer had Riley Green
struck out and we can't challenge, and that could have
blown up. The game could have blown up right there
with Ferrera's inning. But we didn't have the opportunity to
challenge in the seventh because Randy rose Arena had to

challenge a one on one pitch early on in the contest.
That meant nothing and he was wrong about it. Well,
it just I mean, it was just that was just.
It wasn't just Munnos, It wasn't just Dan. That was
a full scale own baseball game that you should have
never lost, period.

Yeah, they should have played better in a lot of ways,

Yeah, how about that? Yeah, he had a hit. First pitch,
he flew out deep to ray field, looked pretty good set. Afterwards,
I felt pretty good. He's going to make his next
appearance Tuesday in Tacoma, and he will actually catch in
that game. He dh last night, so we'll talk more
about that later on in the show. But I mean,
it's hard to imagine a world where Cal Raley's not
(33:06):
going to be beloved. You know, he's having a rough year,
and he's had injuries this year. He's just been a
bad year for Cal. Last year was a year of Cal.
This has been a bad year for Cal the baseball player.
But it's hard to imagine a world where he's not
always going to be beloved here in Seattle. But when
I moved here, it was hard to imagine that Russell
Wilson was not going to be beloved throughout the rest
(33:28):
of his life here in Seattle. We did not see
what was coming. But I do know how much you
know you didn't. I didn't come into town boy. People
wanted to slap my dirty mouth for even suggesting one
negative thing about Russell Wilson. But there were some things
under that were bubbling underneath the surface. And certainly we
found out a few things about the way the treatment
(33:53):
was different for him, and that it caused a little
bit of a rift, and so on and so forth.
But here in the last few years, man, just there's
just been obviously sort of a breakup that has taken
place the moment that Russ sort of celebrated leaving Seattle
so mightily, and there's been just a bit of a
breakup and maybe a little bit of a haha, that's
(34:15):
what you get sort of attitude. But as he announced
his retirement, and I heard you and Dick Fane talking
about it, and I agree, I think picked up what
you both were putting down. I understand the frustration here.
I think that a few things got exposed about Russell's
game in the later stages of his career, even while
(34:35):
he was here. I think that what Russell should have
learned is that whole let Russ Cook thing might have
been his undoing. He was reading his own press clippings
that was going wild. He thought he was being, you know,
denied his true greatness by Pete being so careful with him. Offensively,
(34:56):
He had new people in his life that were telling
him he was much better then they were allowing him
to be, maybe that Seattle was allowing him to be.
And he ends up falling on his face and so
unceremonious departure by once beloved Seattle Seahawk sports legend. And
(35:18):
then he tasted it. He got to taste it for
a number of years, and he probably is never going
to get into the Hall of Fame. But I do believe,
and this is kind of what I wanted to bring up.
I do believe with time that Russell will feel love
again from Seattle, and Seattle sports fans will remember more
good times than bad with Russell, and I think that
(35:40):
there still will be a good, healthy relationship someday. It
just isn't right now, but I think that someday he
will recover in the hearts and minds of Seattle sports
fans and they will remember all of the really good
things that he did here. Yeah.

One of the questions that I asked Dick and Travis
was do you think that his career was ledgy?

And I didn't think it was.

I don't think so.

Dick said that he did think it was, and I
do think Seattle wise, Yeah, as a Seattle sports legend,
he is a Seattle sports legend.

What he did here was great, It was excellent. I

think he's going to make the Hall of Fame.

the keys to the car, like when it was finally, hey,

I don't think that he achieved Hall of Fame status.

think him being exposed his last couple of years here
and then in Denver where he was sure it was
Seattle's fault, why his game was and then he just

hope for him and for Seattle sports fans that you
do end up remembering him fondly and end up the
relationship gets repaired and that he's on the Ring of
Honor and everything else, and that it all ends well
because it was at one point a very great relationship.

floating around. I mean, Arden's already put two up in her.

Let me tell you a little story.

All right. Well, we're delaying the inevitable because it's time
to talk about a baseball team, which you know they're
not gonna win them all. And lately they've been playing better,
but you go to Detroit and you feel like, okay,
we kicked that last one at home against the Mets,
and Tigers have been struggling a little bit, even though
we know they're a pretty good team on paper. After all,
(07:36):
they took us to the mat to you know, in
the playoffs last year. We know how good they are,
and they've very narrowly knocked us out before we even
got to the American League Championship series. So we know
they can play ball there in Detroit, but they've had
a bad season to this point, and we didn't want
them getting well against the local baseball team. And yet
(07:56):
they seem to have gotten well. They take two out
of three. But frustratingly so the Mariners seem to own
that game yesterday. They seem to have it under control
the entire way. And then and then just some weirdness
which certainly we're going to dive into here on the
(08:18):
radio program right now. And look, there's the Andre's Munjos
element of this that certainly comes to mind. And I
am going to spend some time really just I'm going
to spend an entire fat segment today, one of our
fat segments today talking about Andres Munos because obviously he's
not on his game. But I think, Ashley, you know
(08:40):
where I'm going with this, because my frustrations fell a
lot more at the feet of Dan Wilson yesterday than
they did at Andres Munjos. And you know why, I'm
sure because I talked about it so frequently.
Speaker 4 (08:54):
Yeah, you can't have a guy pitch so infrequently and
then expect him to be sharp.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
That's the way I feel. That's the way Andres feels.
And I don't understand why we can't. I mean, we've
got all of this numerology that we pour over, this
analytics and this nerderama that we employ down the street
at T Mobile, and yet just the basic principle of
(09:18):
does the how when is our closer at his best?
And it's not every five six days. I can tell
you that. And he's even told you that.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
That's the thing is he said it himself, this is
this isn't good for me.
Speaker 1 (09:32):
We've discussed it ad nauseum. And I'm not saying that
Dan Wilson's listening to us and making his game plans
based off of us, No, but enough people have discussed it.
It's out there. I don't know how it is not
more obvious. And so I'm gonna lay some at Andre's
Muno's feet. I mean, get the job done. Why why
do you struggle when you've been given so much rest?
(09:56):
But one thing was very obvious about yesterday, and that
was he was fresh. He was throwing harder than he
had all season long. He was throwing one on one,
one hundred and two mile per hour fastball that was back.
So there's no doubt that he was fresh from all
the excess rest that he has been given as of late.
But he was also not anywhere close at times to
(10:17):
the strike zone, which shows you that he was out
of rhythm. He was out of his sink. And that
comes from him being so used so infrequently, and it
keeps happening over and over this season, and there were
plenty of times that Dan had the opportunity to use
him over the course of the weekend. Hey, if we
(10:38):
really are starting to wonder if he should be our closer,
then let's not make him our closer. I'm saying every
single night, let's not have the idea that the only
time we ever put Andres Munnos in a game is
when we have the lead in the ninth, and yet
that seems to be the way that Dan Wilson is operating.
(10:59):
He should pitched Saturday. We were up four to nothing.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
Why wouldn't we use him then?
Speaker 1 (11:04):
And I get it, some closers don't. They don't perform
as sharply when there's not a save on the line. Well,
let's start start getting him out of that, you know,
four to nothing. That seemed like a perfect time since
we hadn't used him in four days, to throw him
into a game. It's not like we were blowing them away.
You use Gabe Spire and right now he's as valuable
as Andre's munyos, if not more so. In that game
(11:27):
that was an opportunity. And then on Friday even I mean,
I know we were down two, but that's a bloop
and a blast away. And for whatever reason, Dan Wilson
believes that if you're down to the game's over and
we're gonna throw our worst pitcher out there, as opposed to, hey,
we're down to we're a bloop and a blast away,
(11:49):
and we got to get Andre some work. I have
not you. We had a day off on Thursday. I
didn't use him on Wednesday I haven't used him in
five days, and he's told me, he's told me he
needs more usage. We can't. We can't keep going five
or six days without using somebody that obviously relies on
that rhythm. So why not throw them into Friday? We
(12:10):
had the momentum in that game. We're a bloop and
a blast away from tying the damn thing up. By
then we throw. And I don't mean offence to Alex Hoppy,
but he is the last guy in our bullpen that
we would use. And those guys are called mop up guys.
And mop up to me is when you're up six
(12:31):
or down five, you know, not when you're within a
bloop and a blast of tying the damn thing up,
you've got momentum. The Tigers have had trouble with their
bullpen all season long. Why not use Munno's Friday, keep
the score at two runs, keep him in his rhythm.
And there is and I don't know where it is written,
(12:51):
because I believe me, I've started to break down the numbers,
which we'll get into at seven o'clock today. He's actually
better on no day's rest than he is on two
days rest or three days rest or four days rest
or five days res definitely five. Yeah, And so I
put a lot of it on Dan Ashley. I think
(13:14):
that he's not managing and you know what, shame on
andres that he's not better equipped to handle this he
should be at this point in his career. But I
also think that we do all of this number crunching
cons have all We have a phone book worth of
data that we hand over a manager at the beginning
(13:36):
of every game, pour over this data like never before
in the history of sports, and yet we can't figure
out a fundamental thing that the yahoo's down the road
on KJR have been telling you for two months. You
cannot let this guy go five six days without pitching
because he gets out of his rhythm. He's told you everybody,
(14:00):
He's told you, and yet we keep falling into the
same trap over and over and over. I'm tired of
our manager only using our closer when it's a safe situation.
It's driving. It's driven me up a wall. And for
those of you that thought I was going to come
on the air and backpedal on this a little bit
and have to admit, oh, well, we got to make
a change. No, yeah, we do have to make a change.
(14:22):
And I'm not talking about the manager position, but the
way he handles Munyos is what needs to change, not
Munyos well.
Speaker 4 (14:30):
And it should say it in that telephone book of information, right,
I guarantee you it shows how poorly he does in
those exact situations.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
But more importantly than that, as you mentioned, he has
said it himself.
Speaker 4 (14:41):
You have to take the word of the person who
you are relying on to go into a situation and
what they are and aren't comfortable with. And if Munho
says I'm not pitching enough, then he's not pitching enough.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
That's it.
Speaker 3 (14:54):
It doesn't matter what your book says, but your book
could back it up. So you've got two things.
Speaker 4 (14:59):
You've got your book that you really so heavily on
and you've got a person saying it from their actual mouth.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
Use me more, use me mo, so use him more.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
Okay. So here's the compromise on all of this. Let's
not treat him as a you're our only closer. Let's
do that if that's what okay, So some people want
him remove from the closer position. I don't want to
go that far because I think that when he's right
he's still our best guy, and I got the data
to prove that, which I will at seven oh five.
(15:29):
But if we don't have to use him as our
only closer, why can't this be the compromise? Why can't
he be used on Friday down two and then if
you don't want to use him the next day. Why
couldn't we have faith that Matt Brash could get a save,
or Jose Ferrer could get a save, or Gabe Spire
(15:50):
the way he's pitching right now game Spier's pitching better
than anybody out of our bullpen right now, why would
we think that they can't get a save? And so
how is that as a compromise, we will use Andres
Munjos in save situations, but he doesn't have to be
the only guy that gets us saves. And that way,
(16:12):
we can use Munyos in other ways during the course
of the game that don't necessarily reflect him getting a save.
I mean, all this analytics stuff that they did was
to point out that wins, we shouldn't be fighting for
a pitcher to get a win, and we shouldn't be
fighting for a closer to get a save. Those statistics
(16:35):
in the big picture don't really tell the whole story
of how to win that actual game. That's what analytics
are driven by. And so we have an analytics driven organization,
and yet we have a manager that is still trying
to get his closer a save every time he takes
the field, and I think that that's silly. So I
think the compromise is in order to get him more

work that we don't worry if we want to use
him on a Friday and don't want to use him
on back to back days, which I think silly, Then
we don't worry that Munjos is not available for us
on Saturday because we used him to get some work
on Friday. Will use for Air, We'll use Brash the

I think that this organization right now, Dan and the
front office are caught between the numbers and silly season
right now. And the end result is the mess that
you created yesterday, because we haven't even talked about the
Kriswell situation. What the f was that you had Bizardo

up and loose and ready to go, and then you
decided to wait un inning and then put Spire in
the game after Kriswell couldn't get anybody out in the step.
Use your best dude for them, help use Munos there
for goodness sake.

just want to take care of bus when they go in.

Well, Spire, we could say for the top of the order,
because that's when we want him in. And so let's
see if we can squeeze Kriswell even though Bizardo's already loose.
We'll we'll get Chriswell up. He'll face seven, eight, nine
in the order, and maybe we can steal three outs

and then have Spire face the top of the order,
and then we say Bizardo for and then we can
say Bizardo for tomorrow. And even if Chriswell can't get
those three guys out, then Spire comes in. Well, then
we'll say Bizardo for the eighth. And that's a total
waste of Spire, because now if Chriswell allows any traffic

at all, Spire comes in, he might only face one
batter because we refuse, do you use him in a
second inning after he's already been up. We don't like
to let our relievers sit and then go back into
the game. And that's a total waste of your best
reliever right now. And gave Spire stop getting so cute
with it. Put Bizarto in the damn game. He was

ready to come into the game. Put him in the seventh,
save Spire for the eighth, and Munjos for the ninth.
What is wrong with that? And instead Munyos that comes
in hasn't pitched in six days, and instead of having
a four run lead at that point or a three
run lead at that point, is dealing with a run
run lead. And then he walks his first guy and
you know it's, ah no, I don't have it. And
(19:37):
he walks the second guy and even the hit wasn't
that sound of a hit, but it found green grass
and both runs score and you lose the baseball game.
I mean, that was as botched as a three run
lead in the seventh can be botched. And that's not
all on Andre's Munos, some of it, but it's not
(19:58):
all on Andre's moon well.

And definitely the parts that happened when he wasn't in
the game. Definitely not on him.

All right? Mariners do lose to the Tigers five to four.
We'll go through some of the details with Mariners morning
after coming up at six thirty this morning. Tigers take
two out of three, so the Mariners leave Michigan with

a thirty four and thirty two record. That's still good
for first place in the American League West, but only
a game and a half up on the Texas Rangers,
who are playing better baseball right now. In case you
haven't noticed, speaking of a team playing better baseball, the
Baltimore Orioles have been playing a better brand of baseball lately.
They are scoring a lot of runs recently, which is

what they're designed to do. They got off to another
terrible start this year, but they've battled their way back
and into wild card contention. And that's where the Mariners
will be tonight in Baltimore, Maryland, for a game series
against a team that is smoking offensively right now. First
pitch at three point thirty five. More on that later
in the show as well. College World Series has already
(21:11):
invited or accepted what six teams. Six teams are there,
West Virginia, Troy, Ole, Miss, North Carolina, Georgia, and then
last night, in a thriller, Texas came back one over
Oregon to knock the Ducks out. And so six teams
have their places in the eight team College World Series.

They'll determine the other two today starting at eleven o'clock.
Both Saint John's and Alabama and Kentucky, ECUMI, Kansas and
Oklahoma had their games suspended because of weather. So they'll
play a game and a half each of them today
and they'll settle this and by the end of the
day we will have our eight teams for the College
World Series. It is World Cup week. It is here.

four will be tomorrow night, and it'll be in Las Vegas,

where the Knights can go up three to one on Carolina.
Speaking of Las Vegas, the Storm are in Las Vegas tonight,
so maybe they can take in some hockey tomorrow.

Seahawks one series has just begun, will continue it today
and throughout the month of June. One analyst breaking down

It caught me off guard too, But let's get to
Mariners Morning After. We do have a loss to discuss.
The MS trying to take two out of three from
the Detroit Tigers yesterday, and well damn it, they should have.

They led for the most of the game. The entirety
of the game. Frankly took a one nothing lead early on,
Detroit didn't come back to tie it at one, but
then in the sixth, a two run inning for the Mariners.
They were up four to one. At one point Luis
Castillo seemed to be cruising. The bullpen should have been
completely rested. I mean, I guess Matt Brash can only
(24:49):
pitch once every millennium, but you should have added, you know,
your guys good to go to close out a three
run lead. And instead, Dan Wilson opted for Cooper Criswell
in the seventh instead of Bizardo, who was loose and
ready to go, and he ends up not getting out
and then a single batter out of the three that
(25:10):
he faced. So the Tigers cut into the lead in
the bottom of the seventh to make it four to three.
It would remain that way until the ninth Andres Munos,
who we haven't seen since nineteen fifty five, then came
out of the dugout to try to close things out
for the Mariners, and he just did not have his
good stuff, and you could tell pretty early on two
(25:33):
wild wild walks put runners on. Then they ended up
at second and third, and you had two outs, you
were one out away. But here came Detroit, their red
hot rookie Kevin McGonagall and Andres Munnos trying to close
it out for the Mariners by drive and it's right
(25:54):
off the Young's glove. But kiss Tree in Perez come
at home, the Tigers get off. Aaron Goldsmith on the
call Mariners television. Yes, the Tigers do walk it off
for a five to four victory that frankly they should
have never had. Andre's Munos blows his fifth save this season,
(26:16):
so obviously he's not having a good year to this point.
Maybe not as bad as it looks on the surface.
We're going to discuss that more at seven o five.
But this was just not a game that you should
have blown, and blown it as exactly what happened. Yeah,
in this contest. Here is Dan Wilson after the game
(26:38):
gets up.
Speaker 2 (26:38):
Way to lose his series. You know, the walkouts were
always difficult. I thought lewing through the ball extremely well.
Again today, just the way he mixed the heater was
was outstanding. I thought both his heaters were outstanding, and
you know there's a good change ups.

Slider was working.
Speaker 6 (26:55):
I thought, you know, I had things well under control,
really kept that prettyquil I had there for the time
he was out there, and uh, you know a lot
of our offense to get going a little bit, and
they did.

You know, getting some.

Runs early was big, and uh, you know, being able
to add on there towards the end, get that board
run this huge.

And and uh and then the lip the bullpen. You know,
I thought through the ball well, just.

Gave up a couple there at the end. And you know,
it's it's tough there when you when you lose that
kind of a game. But you know, the guys I
thought fought extremely hard today and and you know it's
it's a tough one to come out on the.
Speaker 5 (27:34):
End of because you know they they played hard.
Speaker 1 (27:37):
Dan, what did you see that was going on with
Mooney there in the night?
Speaker 5 (27:40):
Yeah, it just looked like, you know, the command wasn't there,
and and you know I couldn't seem to find it,
you know, uh, with with a couple of hitters and
you know, as we know, walks can be can can.
Speaker 1 (27:51):
Hurt and those you know, those two came around to
hurt it. But you know, it looked like just have
a hard time finding the command. Man, it really is
just a script and it doesn't even matter if it
applies to the game we just.
Speaker 3 (28:07):
Watched because the bullpen came out and pitched really well.
Speaker 1 (28:12):
Yeah, that's what he just said.
Speaker 3 (28:14):
Were we watching the same game?
Speaker 1 (28:15):
Yeah, and then he thinks that like, oh wait, that
was part of the script. Oh yeah, they didn't except
for a couple of things. Yeah, except for like, yeah,
except for blowing the game. They blew the game, right,
that was on the bullpen. So yeah, I don't know.
I'm not sitting here saying that you got to call
some Kriswell out and say Munio's cross. Obviously we're not
(28:36):
saying suggesting that. But we could stop short of saying
the bullpen was great.
Speaker 3 (28:41):
You could be.
Speaker 4 (28:42):
Honest and just say the bullpen struggled today. I mean
even that would be more real.
Speaker 1 (28:47):
And it wasn't just the bullpen, and it wasn't just
I didn't like I didn't like the way Dan managed
the game yesterday. That's nothing new for me. But the
team played slow, they didn't finish. You know, we scored
our four runs. That should be enough. We're done. You know,
you can keep scoring. You don't have to stop. You
(29:09):
don't have to keep it close. You could keep scoring
to idiotic base running blunders by Oh not necessarily, I
would take that back. Naylor is always trying to read
the situation right, and he just left a fraction too early.
Will Vess just held onto the ball and he thought
he had him read and his move read and everything.
(29:31):
He does that all the time, So we can't get
angry when it does cost him a Rose Arena though,
getting caught off the bag, you know, especially after Naylor
just got picked off, maybe that's not a great look.
Maybe losing two base runners in back to back.
Speaker 3 (29:51):
Hitters, maybe we just avoid that in the future.
Speaker 1 (29:53):
You know, three for eleven is not terrible with the
runners in scoring position. But again, there were so many
other opportunities hit him eleven to six. There were so
many other opportunities to pull away in this game, so
that played a hand in it. Also, challenges continue to
be challenging. Las Diaz was terrible yesterday, terrible behind the plate,
(30:17):
and yet we still somehow go I think, oh for two.
Speaker 3 (30:21):
I think one right on right, one for three.
Speaker 1 (30:24):
In our challenges yesterday, and then we're operating the bullpens,
operating without the ability to challenge Farrer had Riley Green
struck out and we can't challenge, and that could have
blown up. The game could have blown up right there
with Ferrera's inning. But we didn't have the opportunity to
challenge in the seventh because Randy rose Arena had to
(30:44):
challenge a one on one pitch early on in the contest.
That meant nothing and he was wrong about it. Well,
it just I mean, it was just that was just.
It wasn't just Munnos, It wasn't just Dan. That was
a full scale own baseball game that you should have
never lost, period.
Speaker 3 (31:03):
I would agree with that.
Speaker 4 (31:05):
Yeah, they should have played better in a lot of ways,
including the bullpen.
Speaker 1 (31:10):
Sorry Dan, but yeah, yeah, yeah, sorry to correct you.

But I will say I was impressed with Castile, so
he I'll give him that. Ye.

Yeah, the piggyback thing is.

Clearly it's solved something going for him.

Yeah, all right, we'll talk more about the Mariners. We're
going to talk a lot of baseball today. As a
matter of fact, coming up later on in the show,
we'll let you know that they start a series tonight
in Baltimore against the Orioles. It will be Emerson Hancock
going against Chris Bassett. Bassett a veteran right hander that
pretty much this entire lineup, with the exception of Colt
Emerson knows and his scene before, and he's not having

a very good year and he's right handed. All the
elements for a productive offensive evening tonight. Let's go in Baltimore,

that I heard Ashley and company talking about what with
out me the last couple of shows, and appropriately so

and also Cal Raleigh, who was in Everett, Washington yesterday

much to the delight of Everett, Washington.

And it was Mill Creek Elementary's night at the game.
We couldn't go, but boy was Palmer bumm that we
couldn't go when she found out because they planned that
forever ago. All those kids got like thirteen dollars tickets
and they'd have to go watch Cal.
Speaker 1 (32:46):
Yeah, how about that? Yeah, he had a hit. First pitch,
he flew out deep to ray field, looked pretty good set. Afterwards,
I felt pretty good. He's going to make his next
appearance Tuesday in Tacoma, and he will actually catch in
that game. He dh last night, so we'll talk more
about that later on in the show. But I mean,
it's hard to imagine a world where Cal Raley's not
(33:06):
going to be beloved. You know, he's having a rough year,
and he's had injuries this year. He's just been a
bad year for Cal. Last year was a year of Cal.
This has been a bad year for Cal the baseball player.
But it's hard to imagine a world where he's not
always going to be beloved here in Seattle. But when
I moved here, it was hard to imagine that Russell
Wilson was not going to be beloved throughout the rest
(33:28):
of his life here in Seattle. We did not see
what was coming. But I do know how much you
know you didn't. I didn't come into town boy. People
wanted to slap my dirty mouth for even suggesting one
negative thing about Russell Wilson. But there were some things
under that were bubbling underneath the surface. And certainly we
found out a few things about the way the treatment
(33:53):
was different for him, and that it caused a little
bit of a rift, and so on and so forth.
But here in the last few years, man, just there's
just been obviously sort of a breakup that has taken
place the moment that Russ sort of celebrated leaving Seattle
so mightily, and there's been just a bit of a
breakup and maybe a little bit of a haha, that's
(34:15):
what you get sort of attitude. But as he announced
his retirement, and I heard you and Dick Fane talking
about it, and I agree, I think picked up what
you both were putting down. I understand the frustration here.
I think that a few things got exposed about Russell's
game in the later stages of his career, even while
(34:35):
he was here. I think that what Russell should have
learned is that whole let Russ Cook thing might have
been his undoing. He was reading his own press clippings
that was going wild. He thought he was being, you know,
denied his true greatness by Pete being so careful with him. Offensively,
(34:56):
He had new people in his life that were telling
him he was much better then they were allowing him
to be, maybe that Seattle was allowing him to be.
And he ends up falling on his face and so
unceremonious departure by once beloved Seattle Seahawk sports legend. And
(35:18):
then he tasted it. He got to taste it for
a number of years, and he probably is never going
to get into the Hall of Fame. But I do believe,
and this is kind of what I wanted to bring up.
I do believe with time that Russell will feel love
again from Seattle, and Seattle sports fans will remember more
good times than bad with Russell, and I think that
(35:40):
there still will be a good, healthy relationship someday. It
just isn't right now, but I think that someday he
will recover in the hearts and minds of Seattle sports
fans and they will remember all of the really good
things that he did here. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (35:55):
One of the questions that I asked Dick and Travis
was do you think that his career was ledgy?
Speaker 3 (36:01):
And I didn't think it was.
Speaker 1 (36:02):
I don't think so.
Speaker 4 (36:04):
Dick said that he did think it was, and I
do think Seattle wise, Yeah, as a Seattle sports legend,
he is a Seattle sports legend.
Speaker 3 (36:11):
What he did here was great, It was excellent. I
would not call it legendary.
Speaker 1 (36:16):
I would not either. I would not, And I don't
think he's going to make the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 3 (36:20):
I don't either.
Speaker 1 (36:20):
And I think that him having been exposed when given
the keys to the car, like when it was finally, hey,
you no longer have the greatest defense in the world.
You no longer have Marshaun Lynch in the backfield. And
he had really good moments, really good moment very good moments.
He well, he certainly had great moments at times, but
I don't think that he achieved Hall of Fame status.
Speaker 2 (36:44):
No.
Speaker 1 (36:45):
Really good career, very good career, but hall of Fame career.
I I don't think I go that far. And I
think him being exposed his last couple of years here
and then in Denver where he was sure it was
Seattle's fault, why his game was and then he just
completely fell on his face in Denver, I think it's
going to keep him from the Hall. But I do
(37:06):
hope for him and for Seattle sports fans that you
do end up remembering him fondly and end up the
relationship gets repaired and that he's on the Ring of
Honor and everything else, and that it all ends well
because it was at one point a very great relationship.
