Andres Munos, who blew his fifth save of the season yesterday.
He also has a three and four record. Because of
that loss yesterday to the Detroit Tigers. I've had a
few people reach out and say, are you finally going

to come around? I mean, I have Greg Bell pretty
much every time I leave the studio now saying still
believe in Munos, And I do.

I know it sounds crazy. I'm not being.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Stubborn about this. I'm really not. And I love Andres.
He's one of the nicest human beings. But it has
nothing to do My analysis has nothing to do with
how nice a person that I think he is. Even yesterday,
I saw a guy throwing his fastball as hard.

As ever one hundred and one hundred and two miles prior.

He just couldn't locate it yesterday, and I think that
has everything to do with the fact that he's being
pitched so infrequently this year, and by his own demands,

And so when you go five and a half days
without him seeing the mound, without seeing live action, and

an organization that has ton tons of data. They are
an analytics driven organization, and I think they've softened on

that in the last couple of years. The hiring of
Dan Wilson was a gesture of we're softening on analytics.
We've got to marry the two. As Bucky and I
have said since we started doing this show together, I
don't dislike analytics. I love analytics. I love what they've
done for the game. But anybody that married themselves to
them entirely is a fool, and anybody that won't use

them is a fool. And so right now, twenty twenty six,
you better being being marrying the two principles, not being
caught up in analytics, and yet make sure that you
are using them. Otherwise you're at a huge disadvantage. Every
single night, Well, here is an organization driven by this.
They're an analytics driven organization, and yet what we're watching

unfold is head scratching at best and almost hair pulling
for me that here's this isn't difficult data to find.
I don't need a nerd to look this up for me.
Andre's Munos does not do well when he's rested for
too long, by his own admission, and maybe Ashley, maybe

it is. Maybe it's now mental, maybe it's psychological with him.
Maybe he thinks he can't perform that way, and shame
on Andre's for that. He's got to get tougher, he's
got to get stronger, and there's no excuse for how
bad that he looked yesterday and not being able to
find the strike zone. But there might be reasons for it,
and to me, the reasons are, he's just better when

he's in a rhythm, and he can't get in a
rhythm because for whatever reason, and an analytics driven organization,
analytics wanted to bleed the closer out of the sport
when they started. It's unnecessary to have a guy designated
for the ninth inning. How silly is that you pitch
your best arm in the best matchups, whatever time in

the game that it requires you to need your best
arm out of the bullpen, you use him. That's what
the preaching of analytics was. And yet here we have
an analytics driven organization and a manager that will only
use Andre's munnos if we're up one or two runs

or tied after the eighth.

That's the only time that he will ever use him.
And when you do it, when you.

Let that dictate how often you use a guy that
is begging to be used more, what happens you have
long stretches of time where the game situation does not
meet your requirements for usage of Andre Simunjos, And the
end result has been He's been very inconsistent. He has

bear it out. He is struggling from lack of usage.
And it's so obvious, Ashley, I mean, I just scratched
these numbers together this morning.

Andres isn't gonna pitch. And even when Andres is saying,

I can't pitch that way, not as well as I
want to, but I'll wait until you call me and
I'll do my best.

And yesterday it wasn't good enough. His best was not
good enough.

over the map, no command whatsoever. So here's the data,
this is what you're looking at. This is as simple
as could be with no day's rest. Andres Muno says
five games pitched, four and two thirds innings and one
run aloud. He has two saves and one blown save,

and he has lost two games, but four and two
thirds innings pitch, one run allowed. That's an zero point
nine to three era. When he has one day rest,
So that means like no day's rest is you're you're
going one day and then you're pitching the very next
which they don't like to do that period.

They won't do it at all with Brash.

One day between okay, so one day off Andres Muniez.
Five games pitched, five innings pitched, no runs allowed, nine strikeouts.

excuse me, two days just not more, just two days

off seven games, now, let's stop right there. Yeah, he's
pitching more on three or more days rest than in

me enough. So five games, five games, five games, seven
games that he's pitched on three days rest or more
an eleven point three seven ERA. Now, he does have
four saves, he's blown one save, and he's lost two games.

And keep in mind that five run outing against the
Padres is in this, so that does whack the numbers considerably.
But let's take the two together. Okay, and again I'm
missing an inning. I'm also and I'm not cherry picking
because I don't know what any I miss. H I
didn't choose the first two games of the year against

Cleveland because we're coming out.

Of the gates. Yeah, you know I didn't even use those. Okay, but.

Ten games on one day rest or less a combined
zero point nine to three er. Twelve games with two
days rest or more a combined nine point two eight er.

If only there were some numbers to show that he
does better with less rest All right, that's ridiculous.

and you won't even just basic surface stuff. Oh, this guy,
when you pitch him more is better.

Yeah, if you pitch him every other day, he's actually
very very very good.

have a guy with that kind of fastball other than
Andre's Munnos.

Pete Woodworth calls it the most unhittable pitch in the
entire sport. When he's got it. When he's on, and
he's dominating righties this year, dominating them.

So what about this as a compromise, Because I know
a lot of people wont him out of the closers role.

How about we just say you don't close.

That's not your only job, but we're not going to
use you just when there's a save opportunity. We will
use you on a Friday night down two because you
need some work and because we're a bloop and a
blast away from possibly tying up, and we've just seized

momentum of this Friday night game. As opposed to using
our worst reliever, who goes out there in the eighth
and in a blink of an eye you're down four.
In the game's over, the game is out of reach.
How about we not use him as a closer purely.
I still want him when it works the right way.

He's getting the ball for me. I mean the stuff
to me that he doesn't look injured, he doesn't look tired.
The stuff to me looks like closer stuff. He's struggling
against left handers, and he's struggling with command when he
has sat for too long. Those are the two issues
with Andres Munnos. But we want this guy to be great,

and the stuff is there, so let's get him right.
That's all that matters, getting right. And I think what
gets him right is pitching him more frequently. And if
that means he's not the guy, we just don't use
him for every save. Fine, I'm a thousand percent okay
with that. Frere can get the job done, Brash can

get the job done. Gabe Spire is better than anybody
coming out of our bullpen right now, I guarantee you
Gabe Spire.

Can get us saves right now, I would think. So
I don't need.

Andres Munjos to get us every save. What I need
from Andres Munos is for him not to wait five
six days before he pitches again. That's what I need
from Andre's And I don't care if it's a scenario
like Friday where he's given the ball because we're a
bloop and a blast away from possibly coming back and
winning this game, and he needs work because we have

sat him for four straight days. I don't care if
it's Saturday, when we're up four to nothing, use him
in the ninth. Why does there have to be a
save attached to it? And then yesterday, finally he gets
his chance. He's chopping at the bit, he's throwing harder
than he ever has. He was certainly fresh, but the
five days off he looked as rusty as you could
possibly look. He had zero command out there on the mound.

How does that not ring a bell and somebody's head
in that organization. Dan Wilson's a very smart person, So
is Maniacta.

So is Pete Woodworth. So is Jerry Depoto, So is
Justin Hollander. How is that not ringing a bell? But
the reason that he's struggling is because he's not pitching.

Enough, and especially with the creativity that these guys have
shown that they're already willing to do with this pitching staff,
I mean the piggyback situation and going between that and
the six man rotation to.

Figure out what works best for people.

it comes to these six starters, But then when it
comes to your bullpen, it's gee.

the same mantra with your bullpen as you're using with
your starting pitch.

mix and match. You do base it on who you're
getting ready to face and who the best matchups are.

in these old school boxes. Andre's munnos can only pitch
if there's a save on the line. That is rubbish.

You have great pitchers, use them in the moments in
each game. Like, ooh, actually, this would be a great
plan for this person. This would be a great Oh
you know what, Mooney hasn't hasn't pitched since Wednesday, Let's
use him.

Munjos is dominating right handers, even with how poorly he's look,
he's dominating right handers.

You know, it's not it's not a terrible idea that, hey,
we need to get him.

He needs to pitch today, and right now it's tied,
and I know it's the seventh inning, but they've got
a steady flow of right handers coming up. Use Munjos then,
and then we can trust somebody else to get a
save in the ninth inning, since we can't trust Andres
to get a save in the ninth inning right now,

especially when he's on three or more days rest. I
don't think this is a difficult problem to solve. And
trust me, all of those that want to chase Andres
Munyos out of town, we want to solve this, right.
We want Andres to be good because he has shown
he can be elite coming out of the pen.

And you just don't walk away from guys like that.

And so let's get him right and on most nights,
if it works out that way.

don't think the Knicks are playing as well as they

certainly they're playing really great basketball down the stretch, and

that is the goal. That is the design of a

You want to use the entire arc of your season
and that continue. That includes the off season, the preseason,
the regular season, managing injuries, getting to know one another,
and you want that to culminate with you playing your

whatever it is that you're playing at the right time.
And that's the Knicks. That's what they have done this year.
They are playing the best basketball in the world as
a team right now. I think maybe they're playing better
basketball than anyone else is playing any sport right now.

last two games. Just how much other people are stepping

great on both ends of the floor, which I don't
think Carl Anthony Towns ever was. And then once that
was instilled in him, then Mike Brown's kind of taking him.
Mike Brown's more of the you can be the best
out there kind of coach, uh, and he's taken him

the rest of the way. We're looking at a great
player right now and Carl Anthony Towns and we're looking
at a cold blooded assassin and Jalen Brunson. And then
as a group, they play as well together as anyone
in sports right now.

Well, and with the how well they're playing too, the
Spurs just can't beat themselves.

on Sunday. And so suddenly maybe we're not as hot

Keep in mind the Baltimore Orioles two years ago. They
thought they were had arrived, like, we're the team to
beat in the American League East. We're better than the
Yankees were, better than the Blue Jays were. They have
this young team that has found the playoffs. We haven't

won in the playoffs, but we keep finding the playoffs.
And yet we're built on this young nucleus of high
draft picks and terrific offensive talent. If we could just
find pitching, we're gonna get over the top. And then
last year a disaster, like everything went wrong. They couldn't
even hit, and they certainly couldn't pitch. And then this
year they you know, we're gonna reinforce. We're gonna be
(32:04):
gonna very aggressive, and they were very aggressive in the offseason.
They added Pete Alonzo for goodness sake, in the offseason.
This is just an organization that doesn't spend. You don't
think the Mariners spend. Look at the Orioles spending history
in the last quarter century. They just don't spend. But
they were in we're not gonna blow this foundation. We're
gonna go for it, and they were very aggressive this
(32:27):
past offseason.

And what happened. They started the year twenty one and
twenty nine and you had to do some soul searching.
If you're anywhere in the Orioles front office, you're looking
at your watch like, okay, where else could I get
a job before lunch today?

Yeah, because it was not looking good for Baltimore again.
But then all of a sudden, they won ten of
their next fourteen, so they pulled themselves out of that crater,
dusted themselves off. Now they've lost two in a row
to Toronto, but still you've gone ten and six, moved
up to thirty one and thirty five overall, which isn't great,
(33:08):
but you're only a game and a half out of
the wild card. So the Orioles are revived. They feel renewed.
That's what the Mariners are going up against, and it's
going to be strength on strength. It's going to be
our pitching versus their hitting, which is the reason why
they've turned things back around. Those young hitters that were
kind of the envy of baseball there for a while.

That young nucleus of hitters, over that stretch of sixteen
games that they've played, have scored ninety four runs during
that time, so about six runs per game. So they've
actually really picked it up, and so it's going to
be strength on strength, four nights of it starting tonight
at three thirty five, or four late afternoons for us,
(33:51):
starting at three thirty five tonight.

Our strength are starting pitching against their strength, which is
their young hitters. Let's get it on. Yeah.

I feel like just coming off that Detroit series because
it was the same thing.

Detroit was terrible.

They had a horrible May, and you're thinking, Okay, yeah,
they're kind of getting right, but we're a better team.
We're supposed to be a better team. But they didn't

that Baltimore has. So it does make me a little
extra nervous.

And the thing about the two guys with Baltimore, the
two guys we got to be worried about, are both catchers.
Adleie Rutchman has refound his game this year and for
the last couple of years, I mean, the question in
Baltimore has been what's wrong with a Lee? Yeah, I mean,
he was a number one overall pick out of Oregon State,
was supposed to be a superstar, and for the last

two years he's not hit well. Well, he's hitting well
this year so he's found his game. And then young
Sam Bissalo also a catcher, so he's the other guy
that is scorching the baseball right now. So we got
to be careful with those guys. They can hit home runs.
Colton Kowser's been on a roll lately as well, and
so's that's the matchup. Colby ma hits home runs. I mean,

they are all home run hitting team, and that's going
to be an interesting four days. Certainly, we're gonna have
to bring a better version of ourselves than what we
took to Detroit because that was sloppy and at times gross,
what we watched this weekend.

Andres Munos, who blew his fifth save of the season yesterday.
He also has a three and four record. Because of
that loss yesterday to the Detroit Tigers. I've had a
few people reach out and say, are you finally going

to come around? I mean, I have Greg Bell pretty
much every time I leave the studio now saying still
believe in Munos, And I do.
Speaker 6 (06:32):
Know.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
I know it sounds crazy. I'm not being.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Stubborn about this. I'm really not. And I love Andres.
He's one of the nicest human beings. But it has
nothing to do My analysis has nothing to do with
how nice a person that I think he is. Even yesterday,
I saw a guy throwing his fastball as hard.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
As ever one hundred and one hundred and two miles prior.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
He just couldn't locate it yesterday, and I think that
has everything to do with the fact that he's being
pitched so infrequently this year, and by his own demands,
his own please, he.

Has said straight out of his mouth, I want to
pitch more.

He's not need to pitching enough.

And so when you go five and a half days
without him seeing the mound, without seeing live action, and
he doesn't have his command at this stage, should we
be all that surprised by it? I mean, this is
an organization that has ton tons of data. They are
an analytics driven organization, and I think they've softened on

that in the last couple of years. The hiring of
Dan Wilson was a gesture of we're softening on analytics.
We've got to marry the two. As Bucky and I
have said since we started doing this show together, I
don't dislike analytics. I love analytics. I love what they've
done for the game. But anybody that married themselves to
them entirely is a fool, and anybody that won't use

them is a fool. And so right now, twenty twenty six,
you better being being marrying the two principles, not being
caught up in analytics, and yet make sure that you
are using them. Otherwise you're at a huge disadvantage. Every
single night, Well, here is an organization driven by this.
They're an analytics driven organization, and yet what we're watching

unfold is head scratching at best and almost hair pulling
for me that here's this isn't difficult data to find.
I don't need a nerd to look this up for me.
Andre's Munos does not do well when he's rested for
too long, by his own admission, and maybe Ashley, maybe
(08:44):
it is. Maybe it's now mental, maybe it's psychological with him.
Maybe he thinks he can't perform that way, and shame
on Andre's for that. He's got to get tougher, he's
got to get stronger, and there's no excuse for how
bad that he looked yesterday and not being able to
find the strike zone. But there might be reasons for it,
and to me, the reasons are, he's just better when
(09:06):
he's in a rhythm, and he can't get in a
rhythm because for whatever reason, and an analytics driven organization,
analytics wanted to bleed the closer out of the sport
when they started. It's unnecessary to have a guy designated
for the ninth inning. How silly is that you pitch
your best arm in the best matchups, whatever time in
(09:28):
the game that it requires you to need your best
arm out of the bullpen, you use him. That's what
the preaching of analytics was. And yet here we have
an analytics driven organization and a manager that will only
use Andre's munnos if we're up one or two runs
(09:49):
or tied after the eighth.

That's the only time that he will ever use him.
And when you do it, when you.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
Let that dictate how often you use a guy that
is begging to be used more, what happens you have
long stretches of time where the game situation does not
meet your requirements for usage of Andre Simunjos, And the
end result has been He's been very inconsistent. He has

at times looked completely out of rhythm, and the statistics
bear it out. He is struggling from lack of usage.
And it's so obvious, Ashley, I mean, I just scratched
these numbers together this morning.

As a matter of fact, I'm an inning off. I
can't find an inning.

They give them a phone book every day. This is
what these are the matchups, this is what we look for.
This is where he's strong, this is where they're weak.

just keeps saying Nope, unless it's a save situation, then
Andres isn't gonna pitch. And even when Andres is saying,

I can't pitch that way, not as well as I
want to, but I'll wait until you call me and
I'll do my best.

And yesterday it wasn't good enough. His best was not
good enough.

over the map, no command whatsoever. So here's the data,
this is what you're looking at. This is as simple
as could be with no day's rest. Andres Muno says
five games pitched, four and two thirds innings and one
run aloud. He has two saves and one blown save,

and he has lost two games, but four and two
thirds innings pitch, one run allowed. That's an zero point
nine to three era. When he has one day rest,
So that means like no day's rest is you're you're
going one day and then you're pitching the very next
which they don't like to do that period.

They won't do it at all with Brash.

One day between okay, so one day off Andres Muniez.
Five games pitched, five innings pitched, no runs allowed, nine strikeouts.

Two for two and save opportunities.

When he has two days rest or more five games,
excuse me, two days just not more, just two days
two days rest, five games, four and a third innings pitched,
three runs allowed, three blown saves and one converted save.

off seven games, now, let's stop right there. Yeah, he's
pitching more on three or more days rest than in

me enough. So five games, five games, five games, seven
games that he's pitched on three days rest or more
an eleven point three seven ERA. Now, he does have
four saves, he's blown one save, and he's lost two games.

And keep in mind that five run outing against the
Padres is in this, so that does whack the numbers considerably.
But let's take the two together. Okay, and again I'm
missing an inning. I'm also and I'm not cherry picking
because I don't know what any I miss. H I
didn't choose the first two games of the year against

Cleveland because we're coming out.

Of the gates. Yeah, you know I didn't even use those. Okay, but.

Ten games on one day rest or less a combined
zero point nine to three er. Twelve games with two
days rest or more a combined nine point two eight er.

If only there were some numbers to show that he
does better with less rest All right, that's ridiculous.

and you won't even just basic surface stuff. Oh, this guy,
when you pitch him more is better.

Yeah, if you pitch him every other day, he's actually
very very very good.

Yeah, it turns out when he said he wanted to

have a guy with that kind of fastball other than

He has an unhittable slider.

Pete Woodworth calls it the most unhittable pitch in the
entire sport. When he's got it. When he's on, and
he's dominating righties this year, dominating them.

It's absolutely dominating.

So what about this as a compromise, Because I know
a lot of people wont him out of the closers role.
Speaker 3 (15:44):
How about we just say you don't close.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
That's not your only job, but we're not going to
use you just when there's a save opportunity. We will
use you on a Friday night down two because you
need some work and because we're a bloop and a
blast away from possibly tying up, and we've just seized

momentum of this Friday night game. As opposed to using
our worst reliever, who goes out there in the eighth
and in a blink of an eye you're down four.
In the game's over, the game is out of reach.
How about we not use him as a closer purely.
I still want him when it works the right way.

He's getting the ball for me. I mean the stuff
to me that he doesn't look injured, he doesn't look tired.
The stuff to me looks like closer stuff. He's struggling
against left handers, and he's struggling with command when he
has sat for too long. Those are the two issues
with Andres Munnos. But we want this guy to be great,
(16:55):
and the stuff is there, so let's get him right.
That's all that matters, getting right. And I think what
gets him right is pitching him more frequently. And if
that means he's not the guy, we just don't use
him for every save. Fine, I'm a thousand percent okay
with that. Frere can get the job done, Brash can
(17:16):
get the job done. Gabe Spire is better than anybody
coming out of our bullpen right now, I guarantee you
Gabe Spire.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
Can get us saves right now, I would think. So
I don't need.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
Andres Munjos to get us every save. What I need
from Andres Munos is for him not to wait five
six days before he pitches again. That's what I need
from Andre's And I don't care if it's a scenario
like Friday where he's given the ball because we're a
bloop and a blast away from possibly coming back and
winning this game, and he needs work because we have

sat him for four straight days. I don't care if
it's Saturday, when we're up four to nothing, use him
in the ninth. Why does there have to be a
save attached to it? And then yesterday, finally he gets
his chance. He's chopping at the bit, he's throwing harder
than he ever has. He was certainly fresh, but the
five days off he looked as rusty as you could
possibly look. He had zero command out there on the mound.

How does that not ring a bell and somebody's head
in that organization. Dan Wilson's a very smart person, So
is Maniacta.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
So is Pete Woodworth. So is Jerry Depoto, So is
Justin Hollander. How is that not ringing a bell? But
the reason that he's struggling is because he's not pitching.
Speaker 6 (18:28):
Enough, and especially with the creativity that these guys have
shown that they're already willing to do with this pitching staff,
I mean the piggyback situation and going between that and
the six man rotation to.
Speaker 5 (18:38):
Figure out what works best for people.
Speaker 6 (18:40):
I don't know why you would be so flexible when
it comes to these six starters, But then when it
comes to your bullpen, it's gee.
Speaker 3 (18:49):
Yeah, he has to pitch here, he has.
Speaker 6 (18:51):
To Yes, yes, Why not use the same thought process,
the same mantra with your bullpen as you're using with
your starting pitch.
Speaker 3 (19:00):
Well, that's just it.

Like in an analytics world in the modern day, you
mix and match. You do base it on who you're
getting ready to face and who the best matchups are.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
Yeah, but.

We're doing that while we're also trying to keep people
in these old school boxes. Andre's munnos can only pitch
if there's a save on the line. That is rubbish.
Speaker 5 (19:24):
Yeah, use there.

You have great pitchers, use them in the moments in
each game. Like, ooh, actually, this would be a great
plan for this person. This would be a great Oh
you know what, Mooney hasn't hasn't pitched since Wednesday, Let's
use him.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
Munjos is dominating right handers, even with how poorly he's look,
he's dominating right handers.
Speaker 3 (19:43):
You know, it's not it's not a terrible idea that, hey,
we need to get him.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
He needs to pitch today, and right now it's tied,
and I know it's the seventh inning, but they've got
a steady flow of right handers coming up. Use Munjos then,
and then we can trust somebody else to get a
save in the ninth inning, since we can't trust Andres
to get a save in the ninth inning right now,

especially when he's on three or more days rest. I
don't think this is a difficult problem to solve. And
trust me, all of those that want to chase Andres
Munyos out of town, we want to solve this, right.
We want Andres to be good because he has shown
he can be elite coming out of the pen.
Speaker 3 (20:29):
And you just don't walk away from guys like that.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
And so let's get him right and on most nights,
if it works out that way.
Speaker 3 (20:37):
I want him closing for us.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
Even now, even with five blown saves before June eighth,
I want him closing for us. But I don't want
to make Andres Munno's only pitch in save situations because
it's ruining his season.

I mean, you're he's not pitching at his best and
that they're for is hurting your team. So I don't

NBA Finals are going to take place tonight, game number
three between the Spurs and the New York Knicks. I
don't think the Knicks are playing as well as they
were the previous what eleven wins in a row, but
certainly they're playing really great basketball down the stretch, and
I give them all the credit in the world. I mean,
that is the goal. That is the design of a

sports season, is that you want to be playing your best.
You want to use the entire arc of your season
and that continue. That includes the off season, the preseason,
the regular season, managing injuries, getting to know one another,
and you want that to culminate with you playing your
absolute best basketball fill in the blank, basketball, baseball, softball,
(22:59):
whatever it is that you're playing at the right time.
And that's the Knicks. That's what they have done this year.
They are playing the best basketball in the world as
a team right now. I think maybe they're playing better
basketball than anyone else is playing any sport right now.
Speaker 6 (23:14):
Well, and especially I mean you look at the last
game or last I guess it was, yeah, the last game,
last two games. Just how much other people are stepping
up because you've got Jalen Brunson and you've seen that
he's incredible and what he can do real. But now
you've got you know, Karl Anthony Towns, who's like, hey,
you know, I'm here and I'm actually really good too.
So I'll just you know, if Jalen's having a little
bit of an off night before the fourth quarter, I

got us.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
Yeah. I think Jalen Brunson is just an assassin. I
mean he is. You know, we just got done talking
about a closer. I mean, he's got that closer mentality.
He's got that Mariano Rivera mentality like I I will
make the last shot, there's no doubt. You better not give.

Speaker 2 (23:51):
And I don't even care if I have a good
angle at the basket. I'm just gonna throw it up
and it's going to go in. You know, that's kind
of his mentality. But more of this series, it's two
to nothing because the Spurs have not played as well
and maybe they felt as a young.

You know, it's not just to get to the finals.
They always say a young team's gotta have some sort
of failure before they realize what it takes to get
through four series. You gotta win sixteen games, and they
did a tremendous job winning twelve, and they knocked out
the Oklahoma City Thunder, but then at home the last
(24:28):
two games. I don't think it's necessarily been about how
great the Knicks have been, because I don't think they've
been as good as they were in their previous eleven games.
I think it has been the Spurs have just not
responded to the moment to the stage, and Wimby has
not responded to the moment or the stage. And maybe
it is Carl Anthony Towns that's taken him out of
(24:51):
his game. And this is somebody that I think at
one point was labeled a little soft and whether or
not you could build an organization around him, because the
Timberwolves tried to do that once upon a time ball
whatever he's learned. And I think it goes back to
two coaches. Tibbs, who was a defensive minded head coach
who was there in New York and maybe he couldn't
(25:11):
get him over the top, like Mike Brown looks like
he's going to get him over the top, but he's
certainly instilled in him, hey man, you got to be
great on both ends of the floor, which I don't
think Carl Anthony Towns ever was. And then once that
was instilled in him, then Mike Brown's kind of taking him.
Mike Brown's more of the you can be the best
out there kind of coach, uh, and he's taken him
(25:33):
the rest of the way. We're looking at a great
player right now and Carl Anthony Towns and we're looking
at a cold blooded assassin and Jalen Brunson. And then
as a group, they play as well together as anyone
in sports right now.
Speaker 6 (25:45):
Well, and with the how well they're playing too, the
Spurs just can't beat themselves.
Speaker 5 (25:49):
And that's what they did in the last game.
Speaker 6 (25:50):
I mean, they they blew their opportunity to win that
game with the with Wemby getting that rebound and then
passing to Castle off his back, and I mean, you
know all, but that's the inexperience, that's the young players
on that team. And so you can't give the Knicks
for how well they're playing anything like any advantage.
Speaker 5 (26:11):
And that should have been the Spurs game. You should
be going to New York right now, one to one.
But instead, Yeah, the.
Speaker 6 (26:15):
Spurs took advantage of or the Knicks took advantage of
the Spurs mistakes.
Speaker 3 (26:20):
And I don't think they're done. I think they could.
Speaker 2 (26:22):
You know, I heard a conversation this morning, do they
have a chance, And one of the answers that one
of the panelists gave was no, of course they have
a chance. Of course they can go and steal Game
three and Wemby can play out of his mind and
that changes the series. I mean, but you got to
win tonight. You can't lose again tonight and think that
you're going.
Speaker 3 (26:39):
To come back. That's not going to happen.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
But certainly Wemby can go out there and have a
legendary game, steal Game three and you're right back in
the series and it's suddenly interesting again. But I do
get a kick. I love that inside the NBA has
the finals. They never get the finals, but they have
the finals, so they're gonna get the last word.
Speaker 3 (26:59):
On the season. And look, I love Charles Barkley.
Speaker 2 (27:04):
I really do. I think he's great, great for basketball.
He is one of the best TV personalities of all time.
And I also appreciate, you know, as a sports talk
show of myself that sometimes listeners are like, hey, you
just said that like two hours ago. Yeah, well yeah,
because we're taught you have a different audience turns over

all the time, and I can't change my opinion. So
if the audience is changing over and yet I got
to talk about the same topic, yeah, I'm gonna fall
back on the opinion that I probably shared earlier in
the day, and hopefully I can expand on it or
twist it or whatever the case may be. But all
of us that have done this and our words are

out there for people to consume. We've repeated ourselves, yes
a lot, and yet Charles takes it to.

A whole new level. I mean.

I said this before the series, Carl Anthony Towns is
gonna be the key Now, Shaq, you said something the
other day and I'm telling you Carl Anthony Towns is
the key, and he's taking Wemby completely out of this game.
And Ernie, I told you back in the pre Carl
Anthony Towns is the key to this series.

out of their last four, just when we thought they
were in a roll on a roll Detroit. They should
have won yesterday for sure. Uh, there's no excuse to
have lost that game. I mean there are reasons behind it,
but there's no excuse, no thanks, to lose that game
on Sunday. And so suddenly maybe we're not as hot
(31:03):
as maybe we're not as hot as we thought we were.
Speaker 5 (31:06):
That is the worst.
Speaker 3 (31:08):
Like Chloe Kardashian.
Speaker 5 (31:11):
And are you saying like maybe maybe people just aren't
that into us.
Speaker 2 (31:17):
I don't know, but we'll try to get right against
a team that may have gotten right the Baltimore Orioles.
Keep in mind the Baltimore Orioles two years ago. They
thought they were had arrived, like, we're the team to
beat in the American League East. We're better than the
Yankees were, better than the Blue Jays were. They have
this young team that has found the playoffs. We haven't
(31:41):
won in the playoffs, but we keep finding the playoffs.
And yet we're built on this young nucleus of high
draft picks and terrific offensive talent. If we could just
find pitching, we're gonna get over the top. And then
last year a disaster, like everything went wrong. They couldn't
even hit, and they certainly couldn't pitch. And then this
year they you know, we're gonna reinforce. We're gonna be
(32:04):
gonna very aggressive, and they were very aggressive in the offseason.
They added Pete Alonzo for goodness sake, in the offseason.
This is just an organization that doesn't spend. You don't
think the Mariners spend. Look at the Orioles spending history
in the last quarter century. They just don't spend. But
they were in we're not gonna blow this foundation. We're
gonna go for it, and they were very aggressive this
(32:27):
past offseason.
Speaker 3 (32:28):
And what happened. They started the year twenty one and
twenty nine and you had to do some soul searching.
If you're anywhere in the Orioles front office, you're looking
at your watch like, okay, where else could I get
a job before lunch today?
Speaker 5 (32:44):
Before lunch?
Speaker 2 (32:45):
Yeah, because it was not looking good for Baltimore again.
But then all of a sudden, they won ten of
their next fourteen, so they pulled themselves out of that crater,
dusted themselves off. Now they've lost two in a row
to Toronto, but still you've gone ten and six, moved
up to thirty one and thirty five overall, which isn't great,
(33:08):
but you're only a game and a half out of
the wild card. So the Orioles are revived. They feel renewed.
That's what the Mariners are going up against, and it's
going to be strength on strength. It's going to be
our pitching versus their hitting, which is the reason why
they've turned things back around. Those young hitters that were
kind of the envy of baseball there for a while.
(33:30):
That young nucleus of hitters, over that stretch of sixteen
games that they've played, have scored ninety four runs during
that time, so about six runs per game. So they've
actually really picked it up, and so it's going to
be strength on strength, four nights of it starting tonight
at three thirty five, or four late afternoons for us,
(33:51):
starting at three thirty five tonight.
Speaker 3 (33:53):
Our strength are starting pitching against their strength, which is
their young hitters. Let's get it on. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (33:58):
I feel like just coming off that Detroit series because
it was the same thing.
Speaker 1 (34:03):
Right.
Speaker 5 (34:03):
Detroit was terrible.
Speaker 6 (34:04):
They had a horrible May, and you're thinking, Okay, yeah,
they're kind of getting right, but we're a better team.
We're supposed to be a better team. But they didn't
have I didn't think the hitting issue the hitting strength
that Baltimore has. So it does make me a little
extra nervous.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
And the thing about the two guys with Baltimore, the
two guys we got to be worried about, are both catchers.
Adleie Rutchman has refound his game this year and for
the last couple of years, I mean, the question in
Baltimore has been what's wrong with a Lee? Yeah, I mean,
he was a number one overall pick out of Oregon State,
was supposed to be a superstar, and for the last
(34:39):
two years he's not hit well. Well, he's hitting well
this year so he's found his game. And then young
Sam Bissalo also a catcher, so he's the other guy
that is scorching the baseball right now. So we got
to be careful with those guys. They can hit home runs.
Colton Kowser's been on a roll lately as well, and
so's that's the matchup. Colby ma hits home runs. I mean,
(35:01):
they are all home run hitting team, and that's going
to be an interesting four days. Certainly, we're gonna have
to bring a better version of ourselves than what we
took to Detroit because that was sloppy and at times gross,
what we watched this weekend.
Speaker 5 (35:16):
Yeah, we need to see some good defense out of
our our team for sure.
Speaker 3 (35:19):
Yeah, Josh Naylor had a weird weekend, just a weird.
Speaker 5 (35:23):
That's a weird weekend.

Yeah, some really great moments, some really bad moments as well,
which we will discuss a little later on in the show.
