of the World Cup. We're down to three teams, so
we'll decide the other team in the World Cup Final

took out France to nil the final. Killian and Boppe
and blamed his coach for the loss. His coach blamed
the referees, and I hope, I hope the refs blamed
Killian and Babe. Yep, hope's that would being at for

full circle here. But yes, another match today at noon,
and that leads our headlines. The highlights they're provided by
Fox Television. Speaking of Fox Television, they also hosted last
night the nineties explaying of the Midsummer Classic, the Major
League Baseball All Star Game, where the American League did
win four to nothing over the National League. Three runs

scored in the very first inning off Phillies starter Christopher
Sanchez and then not much offense at all the rest
of the way. Both pitching staffs dominated. I mean, the
MVP of the game was Cody Bellinger, who was one
for three with a single. Yeah, that's it, that's all.
That's all he did, but it knocked in two runs,
proved to be the game winner, and he won the

Most Valuable Player award, even though he joked I didn't
even hit it hard. After the game was over. But
American League over the National League four to nothing. And
so now all the All Star festivities are complete, we
look forward to the second half of the season. Everyone's
going to get two full days off in Major League Baseball,
including the All Star representatives, and so we'll start the

second half on Friday. Mariners will be home for that.
They'll take on the San Francisco Giants. We'll spend the

that's his. So anyway, Danny Jackson joins us here on

Yeah, I just have to pull my ear pods out
after Jackson's snoring.

It's actually very funny when do you think about it.
Danny and Jackson have become roommates. They've gotten so close,
covering the sounders together. All right, Sorry, I'm gonna stop
laughing about that. I just you know, you know why
it's funny because you would never allow that to happen.

That's why he was fleeting next to him for sure.

All Right, well, let's talk some World Cup. We're down
to three teams. I mean, you tell me felt like
Spain handled France pretty easily yesterday?
Speaker 4 (05:49):
Did it?
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Did it border on domination in your eyes? Yesterday? Spain
versus France.
Speaker 4 (05:57):
Very much so.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
Spain strength all the center of the part, they dominated
the midfield.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
It's really where it all happened.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
And what has been France's weapon all tournament long, the
highest goal scorers in the tournament was that offensive four
as good of an offensive threat as you've seen in
any World Cup at any time, and they just couldn't
get it going Bape. You could see the very end
he was pushing the goalkeeper down for Spain in frustration,
just completely shut down for the entire game, and Spain
(06:29):
tactics were fantastic. They have had huge success over the
last few years with their head coach Dela Fuente. They
have not lost a tournament game that the Euros where
they won in twenty twenty four, and then obviously the
World Cup.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
They're on a great run so far.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
After stubbing their toes somewhat in that first game when
they're tied nil nil, but it's been all Spain since then.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
They've been brilliant at the.

Back, they've been really good going forward. They've had some
players step up, and of course they have their eighteen
year old phenom Lemina Marl who had gayed yesterday and
starting to find his feet in this tournament. So I
think it was a surprise for everybody in the manner
in which it happened but Spain with deserving winners.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
You know this question is a little self serving, but
I think a lot of our listeners are kind of
in the same boat with me. They've probably watched more
soccer here in the last month than they have in
a long time and are trying to like figure out
the game through the eyes of experts like yourself. So
I have been saying throughout the tournament, if Mbope and

Messi are so dominant, then why don't you just double
triple team in the entire match and take them out
of the game. And I've been told that that just
doesn't work. And yet I know they didn't double or
triple team him, but they did not let Imbope come
up for air yesterday. So I would just ask you
what were the tactics that allowed Spain to take such
(07:53):
an important piece out of the match almost entirely, And
could England steal from some of that stregy today against Messi?
Speaker 4 (08:03):
I think so.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
I think Spain have always been a possession orientated team,
so they've throughout the World Cups so far they've had
about sixty five percent of the ball. So that's the
first line of defense if you're forcing a team to
chase you with the ball. That can get demoralizing. It
can get you can get fatigued, both mentally and physically.
Of course, so when you actually get the ball back

then of course you have to do something with it.
And when you're tired, that's when mistakes happen. And even
the best players in the world is you know, as
soon as you get the ball, you've been chasing the ball,
you have to The expectation is heavy from the country
that you have to do something with it, and it
just didn't work out. On the flip side, what Spain
showed was the way the players a team, not just
as a group of individuals. They did lose the ball

at times, and then what did they do.

They did exactly what you said.

They swarmed the ball with two or three players immediately.
There was a great example of a player called Baino
who got pushed down in his attack in half of
the field and did he sit there and can plain no,
he didn't get the call. He jumped up, sprinted right
back and helped his teammates win the ball back.

So it was a great.

Example of how to play the team offensively with the ball,
which they've done so well for so many years the Spanish,
but then defensively they did swarm the ball and they
nullified everything that the France could give them. And it's
not just Ambappe, it's you know, Den Bealle was the
worldt Player of the Year just a couple of years ago.
At least they may be the biggest transfer coming out

of soccer going to Real Madrid.
Speaker 4 (09:33):
There's rumors of that.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
And you have other players who have just won the
Champions League with Paris and Jaman So.
Speaker 4 (09:38):
It's not just a Bape that's the thing.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
He could swarm one player, but there's multiple and they
did a fantastic job, all right.

So Imbape blamed the coach, the coach blamed the refs.

I would say you think about the England situation at
the end of last yay. You know, when the coach
says the team didn't play well and then Dude Bellingham
their snapback at the coach. Sometimes you can both be right.
I don't know if blaming the coach at this point
a coach the inn Didier de Champ for the French,
who has won the World Cup in nineteen ninety eight
as the captain has won a World Cup in twenty

eighteen as a coach for the national team.

This was his last game.

It was a world record breaking number of games twenty
six games in the World.

Cup as coach that has not been surpassed by any of.

The coach so he's earned his status as one of
the best and the most successful coaches, but on BAP courses,
by all accounts, one of the most successful players in
the World Cup. Going into yesterday's game, he had twenty
goals from twenty World Cup games, which is quite phenomenal.

Yeah, no doubt. Nanny Jackson has with a huge part
of our World Cup coverage and of course play by
play voice of the Seattle Sounders, former sounder himself, and
we've been leaning on his knowledge pretty heavily as a
station and certainly on this show as well. So we're
happy to have him this morning to talk about the
final three remaining in the World Cups. Oh, what is
it going to take to get your mom's favorite soccer

team to the World Cup Final?
Speaker 3 (11:07):
You know, listen, yesterday's game was about the Purists. It
was a game where both teams play fantastic soccer with
the ball. The crowd is a little more quiet than
you'd expect for a World Cup and that's just the
nature of the two countries and the two sets of teams.
Speaker 4 (11:22):
Today will be a wholly different situation.
Speaker 3 (11:26):
You've got two of the most passionate sets of supporters
in the Argentinians and the English.
Speaker 4 (11:31):
They have traveled in their numbers.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
It will be in a climate controlled environment now versus
what it was in Miami for the English, which was
extremely hot. Kansas City has been extremely hot and humid
as well. Where Argentina is play it will be in
Atlanta Stadium and it will be emotional on the field.
It will be emotional off the field, and it's a
question about which players can can handle that emotion, that
(11:56):
pressure and obviously execute at the right times. Huge history
with Argentina in England. It's not just on the pitch
but also off the pitch. The Falklands War was a
conflict between Argentina and England back in the early eighties.
That is still front very much on the forefront of
the minds of the Argentinians are the people they lost
in that conflict and that carries on to the field.

There's a really famous image of Diego Marrijana in the
famous nineteen eighty six game between Argentina and England and
the World Cup and the Azteca, the famous ground in
Mexico City where he looks across the line of English
players with this kind of scorn look, and he was
after the game he talked about how much the Falklands
War was on the forefront of his mind when he
(12:39):
did the Hand of God. And then, by all accounts,
in my opinion, the best goal ever scored in a
World Cup when he took the ball half the length
of the pitch and around seven English players and scored
a brilliant goal. So it's carried through with David Beckham
sending off in nineteen ninety eight in the World Cup
between England and Argentina, and then the last game was
two thousand and two when in a World Cup when

England and one on penalties. So it's going to be
an incredible game. Brilliant players messy as you mentioned Harry Kane,
Jude Bellingham and a number of other world class players
as well.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
What has Jude Bellingham done for his status in this sport.
I'm sure he was already considered one of the best,
but it's as if he's put his name in for
something more this tournament.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
Jude Belling has been an interesting story of the last
few months. There was a question whether he would even
start for England. He was dropped by Thomas Tookle, the
head coach of England, a few camps ago in preparation
for the World Cup. He hasn't had a great season
in terms of fitness, but he's a brilliant, brilliant player,
no question about it. He's world class. He plays at
(13:45):
Real Madrid. He went there as a twenty year old.
In his first season, I think he was top goalscorer.
Speaker 4 (13:50):
Player of the year in Spain for arguably the.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
Biggest club in the world. And he's been dominant in
this World Cup. He's carried England in the last two games.
Harry Kane got England out of the muck, so to speak,
against the Congo with two late goals, and then it's
been Jude Bellingham against Mexico at the Azteca, which was
an incredible feat of resilience there for the English down
(14:14):
to ten minute altitude against.
Speaker 4 (14:17):
The boisterous crowd.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
And then obviously in the heat of Miami he carried
England with two goals against Norway and the great Harland.
So he has been a player that's carried the team
on his back. He's a young player and he's very
early twenties. I think he's twenty two. He speaks eloquently,
he's great off the field, he's great on the field,
and he's proven himself to be truly a world class

player at such.
Speaker 4 (14:39):
A young age. And you know the focus will be
on him for sure.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
But don't forget Harry Kaine, who could be the Player
of the Year, the World Player of the Year this
year after his season at Buyer Munich. So England definitely
have a five pound to.

Win this game.

Talking World Cup with Danny Jackson here this morning, I
don't know how much you follow American football, imagine a
little bit, so I'm sure you've heard the name Patrick
Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Well, a lot of
football fans think that the rest are in on it,
and they rig a lot of games and they get
all the calls, and I think most of that is
that they're just sick of watching the Kansas City Chiefs
(15:14):
win over the last few years. But then once you
start hearing people complain about that, it does seem that
they rest do give them an advantage here in there.
It just kind of feels that way, And I'm getting
the impression in in football that a lot of countries,
(15:35):
a lot of soccer fans worldwide kind of feel like
Argentina gets way too many calls, Messi gets way too
much benefit of the doubt and there seems to be
to me, Danny, a real hatred for Argentina. Could you
explain that relationship between Messi, Argentina and the rest of
the soccer world.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
Well, it'd be incredibly successful Number one, Messy being the
best player of all time.
Speaker 4 (16:02):
But Cilly.
Speaker 3 (16:03):
In this Worke Cup last two games, so against Egypt,
there was a goal that was disallowed for Egypt that
would have put them up.
Speaker 4 (16:08):
Two goals to nil.
Speaker 3 (16:09):
They eventually went up to nil and then Argentina had
this miraculous comeback to score three goals before the end
of the regulation time to win that game. But there
was a foul that was given up in the run
of player the goal was scored. It was called back
by the referee way back into their own defensive half
of the field after a foul played on an Argentinian player.

There was controversy to that, and then of course against
Switzerland there was the simulation yellow card where the Argentinian
player got the yellow card. Initially it went to var
video replay it was seen that the Swiss player had
simulated by diving and rightly so got a yellow card,
and then that was his second yellow card, and that
got a red and that allowed Argentina to really start

dominating that game again and eventually won it.

There is some question about some of the.

Calls that are getting I do think it's more about
FIFA and some of the complexity they place on tournaments
like this when they try and change so many rules
right on the eve of a World Cup. It's confusing
for players. It's equally confusing, of course for referees or
a human and can be caught up in the emotion
of it all and trying to put together these new

rules and regulations. And then of course you have Messi
on the other side, chirping away as he does, try
to influence things as best he can. And I think
there was a thin the lip breeder said in one
of the media postings that said Messi said something to
the effect of, hey, do you know who I am?
You need to make the right core. So you know,

is that hyperbally is that speculation?
Speaker 4 (17:41):
Messi has earned his right to be respected, but.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
Certainly you hope that they pushed aside. The fascinating thing
about the referee for this game coming up at Argentina England.
It's a refining called Alfare, who is a MLS referee
and he obviously has read Messi in MLS for Miami.
He's a very well respected referee domestically. This will be

the biggest game of his career. I would imagine he's
going to be required to really put.

A handle on the emotion of it.
Speaker 3 (18:13):
It will be a fistfight, it would be a street fight,
this game mixed in with world class players. But he's
going to have to temper that emotion, have to control
that game and not let it get out of hand.
So it's it's a big game for the players, but
a big game for an American based referee as well,

Which is fantastic? All right?

Speaking of emotions, what's England like right now leading up
to kickoff? What's the whole country, what's the what's the
temper there, temper temperature there?
Speaker 4 (18:42):
You know, we've been fortunate. We've we've been the bridesmaid,
never the pride.
Speaker 3 (18:47):
We've we've got there at the precipice of finals in
twenty twenty in the Euros and we fell to Italy.
We've lost of Croatia in the semi final of a
World Cup in twenty eighteen, so you know, we think
we should be It's the first time in World Cup
history that the top four seeded teams have made the
semi finals.

So England is seated number four.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
And I believe Argentina, based on their World Cup and
Copra America victories, are actually seeded number one.
Speaker 4 (19:12):
You could speculate should France be in that number.
Speaker 3 (19:15):
One spot for sure, but England is definitely going to
shut down, as will Argentina. They will be focused heavily
on this game.

The interesting thing is being.

A twelve o'clock kick for specific time three o'clock on
the East Coast and Atlanta, well it's eight o'clock primetime
in the UK, being eight hours ahead of US on Pacific,
so it will it will be every set of eyeballs
will be.

On this game.

It's a chance to make to go to the World
Cup final. Of course, with a German head coach. Who
would have thought, and it's going to be a fascinating matchup.
But I think I think the English are quietly confident.
I think we have we believe we have a good chance.
We wanted this game, I think just for just for
that the theater of playing Argentina and Messi in the

World Cup, which obviously for the English don want to
make this the last game that Messi will ever play
in a World Cup and then get there on Sunday
in New Jersey and play the Spanish in an all
European final and hopefully get one over the finish line.

Doesn't tell us which ones have no idea, but he
came out with his top ten. What really had people
buzzing is something we talked about yesterday in our six
o'clock hour, Josh Allen being ahead of Patrick Mahomes and
then and then here in Seattle. I'm sure they weren't

talking about this as much nationally since they've been doubting
our guy for years, but it was certainly conspicuous to
us that Sam Donald did not crack the top ten
here in Seattle. So you know, maybe we're a little bias.
Maybe we're riding this Super Bowl wave. So I thought

maybe we have a conversation today Ashley on Okay, who
would we take out? I mean it's one thing to
say our guy should be a top ten guy, but
of the top ten guys, who do we think our
guy is better than that? We would trade him? Yeah,
we we would not trade him for that quarterback. We

don't think that would be an upgrade. Ok So let's
talk about Sam Donald and who really shouldn't be ahead
of him on this top ten list. Josh Allen, No, no,
I don't think so either. Patrick Mahomes, No, no, I
don't think so either. Matthew Stafford, No, no, I don't
think so either. I mean Matt Stafford is the only

guy that solved Mike McDonald's defense last year. So yeah,
and he's just special now in terms of like a
long term investment, maybe maybe I'll go there. I mean,
Matt Stafford can't have too many more years.

everything that he's done on a football field, I'd rank
them him ahead as well. So we're in an agreement

number six, I don't know.

I can't quite understand all of the hype around Dak

He I mean, the team underperforms every year, so what
is he really doing for them?

like three four years ago, I really like Dak Prescott
and I thought to myself, Man, this guy really gets overlooked.
And yeah, he puts up numbers, but then again, he's
got CD Lamb and George Pickens last year in his lineup,
and yeah, where are those big wins? Where are those
playoff wins? I mean, it seems like it's always about

championships until Sam Darnald wins one and now we look
at everything else but that, right, And so I would
put Sam Darnoald out of Dak Prescott.

I would, yeah, And I do think obviously you can
blame the Cowboys defense on some of their crappiness, but
I just don't. Yeah, I just don't understand why Dak
Prescott is continuously so hyped.
Speaker 2 (26:40):
Justin Herbert is probably overhyped, and I've probably contributed to
that he's at number seven. I personally think he's excellent,
except for the fact that I think he has to
we have to lay some of that abuse that he
takes on himself. I think he is defiant in his
getting rid of the football. Yeah, he's downright. I know

he doesn't get a lot of protection, but it's almost
as if he's a glutton for punishment. Throw the damn
ball away, and I'm really starting to run out of excuses.
You know, it can't be all on the offensive line Herbert, right,
But I do think he's an exceptional talent, So I
would put him ahead of Sam Donald. But I'm gonna

say for one more year and then that's it. Yeah,
he improve it this year, and if Sam has a
little bit of an off year or I'm flip flopping
that next season for sure.

Yeah, you'd have to prove something this year because you Yeah,
we all know you're tough. We get it, but we
don't need to see it on display constantly. At some point,
you've got to make smarter decisions and then some of
your biggest moments you've made the most boneheaded decisions.

Drake May. No, no, you wouldn't.

Put oh no, I would not put Drake May ahead
of Sam Donald. I would put Sam Donald ahead of
Drake May.

Well, they did play this little game called the Super Bowl.

Well? I will say this in Drake May's defense. Sam
Donald didn't have to face the Seahawks defense. That's true, Okay.
And Drake took a huge step forward in his second year.
I get why he's ranked ahead of Sam because you're
glowing for right now. You're kind of projecting in a
way for the upcoming year. And if he took that

big of a jump where he was an MVP candidate
in year number two, he's probably going to take another
jump forward in year number three. I don't know if
like head to head right now, I don't know. Maybe
that might be my bias poking through, But I do
understand why Drake May's on this list ahead of Sam Donald,

Jared Goff.
Speaker 5 (28:46):
I mean, he puts up a lot of numbers, but again,
where are the big wins to go along with it?
They just seem to fall short, and it seems oftentimes
to be partly his fault.
Speaker 2 (28:56):
I'm going to put Sam ahead of Jared Goff, Yeah
at this point, And I've come a long way on
Jared Golf. Actually, he's been my fantasy quarterback for each
of the last two years.
Speaker 1 (29:05):
Yeah, I love him, and I love the Lions. I
wish they could do better.
Speaker 2 (29:08):
Yeah, but considering how many weapons he has there in Detroit,
I don't think it should be a big surprise that
he's having some statistical success there. But man, I think
I think he shrinks sometimes in those big moments, and
our guy kind of stepped up in the biggest moments
a year ago. So I'd put Sam ahead of him,
and then Caleb Williams is number ten. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (29:32):
I mean I can understand why they put him in
there because Chicago had some very exciting moments last year,
and he helped author a lot of those exciting endings.
But the problem is some of those games shouldn't have
been as exciting as they were, and Chicago kind of
spent three quarters sucking their thumbs and then decided to
play in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 1 (29:52):
So I just can't. I can't put him ahead of
Sam down.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
He seemed to get a lot of good results last year,
but I don't know if the process was equaled the results. Yeah,
and you know who had a very similar season to
Caleb Williams the year before, Jade and Daniels. And it's
like he had a horseshoe up as butt two years ago. Daniels, Well,
guess what, that's lucky horseshoe fell out. And then I
(30:18):
thought Caleb Williams looked very similar all these crazy, wacky
fourth quarter comebacks. And there's no doubt that he's an
incredible talent that could be seen. But I don't know
if the decision making process was even good a year ago.
So I mean he he is a product of hype him.
I'd put Sam out of him as well. So to me,
(30:39):
I think, I mean, as much as we're like not
top ten, I mean I still don't have him top eight,
but I put Sam in the top ten. I put
him in over Prescott, Goff and Williams on this list.
That's how I would do it. And I think that
it just as funny that World Championships moved the needle
so much for so many quarterbacks unless Sam wins it,

and now it doesn't move the needle as much. So
I think Sam Donald's cracked the top ten in the
National Football League, and I think I'd put him right
there at about number nine.
Speaker 5 (31:10):
Yeah, And because it's not just about his athleticism or
his talent and skill, it's about as a whole, can
you lead a team? Can you make the right decisions
in the right moments? And I think he's proven it
May eight or nine.
Speaker 2 (31:22):
I think I kind of double spoke there eight eight,
So I wouldn't put him out of Herbert yet. I
wouldn't put him ahead of May, but i'd put him
out of Williams goff In Prescott. I'd put him there
at number eight. And I still believe Sam Donald's got
a lot more ceiling to reach. I think in the
last couple of years he's figured out a lot of
things about how to play this game, when to go
for it, when to snap off, be aggressive. And I

think that he's going to apply that to a third
season as a full time starter with the confidence. As
Hugh Millen pointed out, he's never before had the confidence
of entering a season as a Super Bowl champion. We
might yet see the best in Sam Donald here in
the years to come.

Yeah, And by the time the Seahawks win the fifth
Super Bowl, other people.

to talk about Luis Castillo again today on Sports Radio

talk to some Luis Castillo again because another round of
rumors have started, and I just want to warn everybody.
I think there's some podcasters and bloggers out there that

really have some really interesting, fresh opinions on baseball. There's
some that don't. And yet I'm not sure there is
a podcaster or blogger out there that understands what trade
value is. So don't get overwrought by somebody who's a
Mets fan who's made a trade to get Las Montes
(32:49):
from us, because they don't know what they're talking about. Okay,
So don't worry, don't panic, and don't get over stressed
over it. But certainly these all are the sources that
are stirring up all this conversation. Sure you can look
at the Mariners situation and say they have too many
starting pitchers, trading deadline is coming up, who should you trade?
(33:13):
If you're not looking at any other variables, you're like well,
you should trade the sixth best guy of the six
the one that is the oldest and makes the most money.
Speaker 1 (33:22):
Yeah, that would make the most sense.
Speaker 2 (33:23):
Yeah, that's who you would like to trade at the
trading deadline. But the truth of the matter is, as
I've talked about numerous times, he doesn't hold a lot
of trade value out there. So that's why the last
twenty four hours of Luis Castillo trade talk has been
a bit interesting. For example, the New York Mets have
come up, and again this is a podcaster and a blogger,
(33:45):
and he got Mariners all all riled up, Mariner fans
all riled up because he suggested Castillo and Las Montes
for Jorge Polanco and Luke Weaver. I think it's actually
kind of creative from the standpoint of Kudjore Polonko. A
Polonko type help us more down the stretch than a
(34:11):
sixth starting pitcher who may move to the bullpen as
early as Friday. You know, yeah, we could definitely use
a hitter. And we liked Polonko, right, I mean, he
finished last season terrific for us, but he's hardly played
this year. When he has played, he hasn't played well,
and he carries a big salary himself two years, forty
(34:33):
million dollars. Here's why it's creative, because you're if you're
gonna move Castillo, there's the potential you're going to have
to take back a bad contract in return. But maybe
that bad contract helps you become a better team right now.
But I need that player that you get in return
to be better than Castillo is a pitcher, and I'm
(34:53):
not sure Polonko satisfies that. Luke Weaver is a nice addition.
He is dominating right handers this season, and he's been
very good as a reliever of the last three years,
and he's been very good again this year. But I
don't know if the Mariners are in the eleven million
dollars for a middle reliever market like the Mets and
the Yankees and the Dodgers get to play in that market.
(35:15):
That's just one of those things that most teams don't
spend a ton of money on, is a middle reliever
making eleven million dollars a year. The Mets do it
because they're terrible and stupid. So I don't mind the
creativity abound this. But the two things that I do
mind is if I'm going to trade Castillo for a
(35:35):
veteran hitter. I need that hitter to be hitting well
right now. Okay, we have enough problems. We can't now
try to resurrect Polanco season. Also, Las Montes is right out.
You can have another one of our prospects, but not
one of our big guys. You can't have Montes in
this trade. No chance. The Atlanta Braves have come up
(35:55):
in the last twenty four hours as a possibility again.
They are in first place right now. They are trying
to contend, and yes they need starting pitching help. But
I don't see this as being you know what this
is gonna look like. If Castillo gets traded to the
Atlanta Braves, it's gonna be Castillo for some prospect ew Yeah,
I mean they're not gonna give up a good hitter,
(36:17):
one of their good hitters. They're not gonna give us
Matt Olson for Luis Castillo. They might give us Austin
Riley because they went out from underneath that contract. But
he's hitting two oh eight and strikes out two times
every at bat.
Speaker 1 (36:28):
And has a big contract. So what are we really gaining.
Speaker 2 (36:31):
You Well, I mean, you get a right handed thumper
who plays third base, which is possibly a hole for you,
but he's he's hitting horribly this year, and of course
they want to get out of his contract. So I
don't really see that as a marriage unless you want
to be angry by the fact that we made a
trade deadline trade where we were the sellers and not buyers,
because that's what you're gonna get if you trade with

the Atlanta Braves. Now last one and I'll do this quickly.
Chicago Cubs and again another podcaster, slash blogger Flow did
this out, but it's got the internet all buzzing. Say
a Suzuki straight up, yes, I'll do that.

How I just don't know how anyone would do that
for us.
Speaker 2 (37:12):
The Cubs aren't going to do that. Yeah, we but
I'd even throw in a prospect, now, one of our
best ones, but I'd throw in a good prospect to
make that happen. His contract expires at the end of
this year. There's more value in Suzuki's expiring contract than
there is Castillo on the books for twenty four million
again next year, especially when we really don't need him.

Kate Anderson's going to be that much older and that
much bigger a part of our starting rotation plans. So yeah,
if that's really what you want to do, blogger who's
speaking on behalf of the Cubs deal, let's shake hands
on that.

and blamed his coach for the loss. His coach blamed
the referees, and I hope, I hope the refs blamed

and that leads our headlines. The highlights they're provided by
Fox Television. Speaking of Fox Television, they also hosted last
night the nineties explaying of the Midsummer Classic, the Major
League Baseball All Star Game, where the American League did
win four to nothing over the National League. Three runs

scored in the very first inning off Phillies starter Christopher
Sanchez and then not much offense at all the rest
of the way. Both pitching staffs dominated. I mean, the
MVP of the game was Cody Bellinger, who was one
for three with a single. Yeah, that's it, that's all.
That's all he did, but it knocked in two runs,
proved to be the game winner, and he won the

Most Valuable Player award, even though he joked I didn't
even hit it hard. After the game was over. But
American League over the National League four to nothing. And
so now all the All Star festivities are complete, we
look forward to the second half of the season. Everyone's
going to get two full days off in Major League Baseball,

second half on Friday. Mariners will be home for that.
They'll take on the San Francisco Giants. We'll spend the

All Right, well, let's talk some World Cup. We're down
to three teams. I mean, you tell me felt like
Spain handled France pretty easily yesterday?

Did it border on domination in your eyes? Yesterday? Spain
versus France.
Speaker 4 (05:57):
Very much so.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
Spain strength all the center of the part, they dominated
the midfield.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
It's really where it all happened.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
And what has been France's weapon all tournament long, the
highest goal scorers in the tournament was that offensive four
as good of an offensive threat as you've seen in
any World Cup at any time, and they just couldn't
get it going Bape. You could see the very end
he was pushing the goalkeeper down for Spain in frustration,
just completely shut down for the entire game, and Spain
(06:29):
tactics were fantastic. They have had huge success over the
last few years with their head coach Dela Fuente. They
have not lost a tournament game that the Euros where
they won in twenty twenty four, and then obviously the
World Cup.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
They're on a great run so far.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
After stubbing their toes somewhat in that first game when
they're tied nil nil, but it's been all Spain since then.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
They've been brilliant at the.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
Back, they've been really good going forward. They've had some
players step up, and of course they have their eighteen
year old phenom Lemina Marl who had gayed yesterday and
starting to find his feet in this tournament. So I
think it was a surprise for everybody in the manner
in which it happened but Spain with deserving winners.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
You know this question is a little self serving, but
I think a lot of our listeners are kind of
in the same boat with me. They've probably watched more
soccer here in the last month than they have in
a long time and are trying to like figure out
the game through the eyes of experts like yourself. So
I have been saying throughout the tournament, if Mbope and
(07:29):
Messi are so dominant, then why don't you just double
triple team in the entire match and take them out
of the game. And I've been told that that just
doesn't work. And yet I know they didn't double or
triple team him, but they did not let Imbope come
up for air yesterday. So I would just ask you
what were the tactics that allowed Spain to take such
(07:53):
an important piece out of the match almost entirely, And
could England steal from some of that stregy today against Messi?
Speaker 4 (08:03):
I think so.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
I think Spain have always been a possession orientated team,
so they've throughout the World Cups so far they've had
about sixty five percent of the ball. So that's the
first line of defense if you're forcing a team to
chase you with the ball. That can get demoralizing. It
can get you can get fatigued, both mentally and physically.
Of course, so when you actually get the ball back
(08:24):
then of course you have to do something with it.
And when you're tired, that's when mistakes happen. And even
the best players in the world is you know, as
soon as you get the ball, you've been chasing the ball,
you have to The expectation is heavy from the country
that you have to do something with it, and it
just didn't work out. On the flip side, what Spain
showed was the way the players a team, not just
as a group of individuals. They did lose the ball
(08:46):
at times, and then what did they do.
Speaker 4 (08:48):
They did exactly what you said.
Speaker 3 (08:49):
They swarmed the ball with two or three players immediately.
There was a great example of a player called Baino
who got pushed down in his attack in half of
the field and did he sit there and can plain no,
he didn't get the call. He jumped up, sprinted right
back and helped his teammates win the ball back.

So it was a great.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
Example of how to play the team offensively with the ball,
which they've done so well for so many years the Spanish,
but then defensively they did swarm the ball and they
nullified everything that the France could give them. And it's
not just Ambappe, it's you know, Den Bealle was the
worldt Player of the Year just a couple of years ago.
At least they may be the biggest transfer coming out
(09:29):
of soccer going to Real Madrid.
Speaker 4 (09:33):
There's rumors of that.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
And you have other players who have just won the
Champions League with Paris and Jaman So.
Speaker 4 (09:38):
It's not just a Bape that's the thing.

He could swarm one player, but there's multiple and they
did a fantastic job, all right.

So Imbape blamed the coach, the coach blamed the refs.

I would say you think about the England situation at
the end of last yay. You know, when the coach
says the team didn't play well and then Dude Bellingham
their snapback at the coach. Sometimes you can both be right.
I don't know if blaming the coach at this point
a coach the inn Didier de Champ for the French,
who has won the World Cup in nineteen ninety eight
as the captain has won a World Cup in twenty

eighteen as a coach for the national team.

This was his last game.

It was a world record breaking number of games twenty
six games in the World.

Cup as coach that has not been surpassed by any of.

The coach so he's earned his status as one of
the best and the most successful coaches, but on BAP courses,
by all accounts, one of the most successful players in
the World Cup. Going into yesterday's game, he had twenty
goals from twenty World Cup games, which is quite phenomenal.

Yeah, no doubt. Nanny Jackson has with a huge part
of our World Cup coverage and of course play by
play voice of the Seattle Sounders, former sounder himself, and
we've been leaning on his knowledge pretty heavily as a
station and certainly on this show as well. So we're
happy to have him this morning to talk about the
final three remaining in the World Cups. Oh, what is
it going to take to get your mom's favorite soccer

team to the World Cup Final?

You know, listen, yesterday's game was about the Purists. It
was a game where both teams play fantastic soccer with
the ball. The crowd is a little more quiet than
you'd expect for a World Cup and that's just the
nature of the two countries and the two sets of teams.
Speaker 4 (11:22):
Today will be a wholly different situation.
Speaker 3 (11:26):
You've got two of the most passionate sets of supporters
in the Argentinians and the English.
Speaker 4 (11:31):
They have traveled in their numbers.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
It will be in a climate controlled environment now versus
what it was in Miami for the English, which was
extremely hot. Kansas City has been extremely hot and humid
as well. Where Argentina is play it will be in
Atlanta Stadium and it will be emotional on the field.
It will be emotional off the field, and it's a
question about which players can can handle that emotion, that
(11:56):
pressure and obviously execute at the right times. Huge history
with Argentina in England. It's not just on the pitch
but also off the pitch. The Falklands War was a
conflict between Argentina and England back in the early eighties.
That is still front very much on the forefront of
the minds of the Argentinians are the people they lost
in that conflict and that carries on to the field.

There's a really famous image of Diego Marrijana in the
famous nineteen eighty six game between Argentina and England and
the World Cup and the Azteca, the famous ground in
Mexico City where he looks across the line of English
players with this kind of scorn look, and he was
after the game he talked about how much the Falklands
War was on the forefront of his mind when he
(12:39):
did the Hand of God. And then, by all accounts,
in my opinion, the best goal ever scored in a
World Cup when he took the ball half the length
of the pitch and around seven English players and scored
a brilliant goal. So it's carried through with David Beckham
sending off in nineteen ninety eight in the World Cup
between England and Argentina, and then the last game was
two thousand and two when in a World Cup when
(12:59):
England and one on penalties. So it's going to be
an incredible game. Brilliant players messy as you mentioned Harry Kane,
Jude Bellingham and a number of other world class players
as well.

What has Jude Bellingham done for his status in this sport.
I'm sure he was already considered one of the best,
but it's as if he's put his name in for
something more this tournament.

Jude Belling has been an interesting story of the last
few months. There was a question whether he would even
start for England. He was dropped by Thomas Tookle, the
head coach of England, a few camps ago in preparation
for the World Cup. He hasn't had a great season
in terms of fitness, but he's a brilliant, brilliant player,
no question about it. He's world class. He plays at
(13:45):
Real Madrid. He went there as a twenty year old.
In his first season, I think he was top goalscorer.
Speaker 4 (13:50):
Player of the year in Spain for arguably the.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
Biggest club in the world. And he's been dominant in
this World Cup. He's carried England in the last two games.
Harry Kane got England out of the muck, so to speak,
against the Congo with two late goals, and then it's
been Jude Bellingham against Mexico at the Azteca, which was
an incredible feat of resilience there for the English down
(14:14):
to ten minute altitude against.
Speaker 4 (14:17):
The boisterous crowd.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
And then obviously in the heat of Miami he carried
England with two goals against Norway and the great Harland.
So he has been a player that's carried the team
on his back. He's a young player and he's very
early twenties. I think he's twenty two. He speaks eloquently,
he's great off the field, he's great on the field,
and he's proven himself to be truly a world class

player at such.
Speaker 4 (14:39):
A young age. And you know the focus will be
on him for sure.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
But don't forget Harry Kaine, who could be the Player
of the Year, the World Player of the Year this
year after his season at Buyer Munich. So England definitely
have a five pound to.

Talking World Cup with Danny Jackson here this morning, I
don't know how much you follow American football, imagine a
little bit, so I'm sure you've heard the name Patrick
Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Well, a lot of
football fans think that the rest are in on it,
and they rig a lot of games and they get
all the calls, and I think most of that is
that they're just sick of watching the Kansas City Chiefs
(15:14):
win over the last few years. But then once you
start hearing people complain about that, it does seem that
they rest do give them an advantage here in there.
It just kind of feels that way, And I'm getting
the impression in in football that a lot of countries,
(15:35):
a lot of soccer fans worldwide kind of feel like
Argentina gets way too many calls, Messi gets way too
much benefit of the doubt and there seems to be
to me, Danny, a real hatred for Argentina. Could you
explain that relationship between Messi, Argentina and the rest of
the soccer world.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
Well, it'd be incredibly successful Number one, Messy being the
best player of all time.
Speaker 4 (16:02):
But Cilly.
Speaker 3 (16:03):
In this Worke Cup last two games, so against Egypt,
there was a goal that was disallowed for Egypt that
would have put them up.
Speaker 4 (16:08):
Two goals to nil.
Speaker 3 (16:09):
They eventually went up to nil and then Argentina had
this miraculous comeback to score three goals before the end
of the regulation time to win that game. But there
was a foul that was given up in the run
of player the goal was scored. It was called back
by the referee way back into their own defensive half
of the field after a foul played on an Argentinian player.

There was controversy to that, and then of course against
Switzerland there was the simulation yellow card where the Argentinian
player got the yellow card. Initially it went to var
video replay it was seen that the Swiss player had
simulated by diving and rightly so got a yellow card,
and then that was his second yellow card, and that
got a red and that allowed Argentina to really start

dominating that game again and eventually won it.
Speaker 4 (16:56):
There is some question about some of the.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
Calls that are getting I do think it's more about
FIFA and some of the complexity they place on tournaments
like this when they try and change so many rules
right on the eve of a World Cup. It's confusing
for players. It's equally confusing, of course for referees or
a human and can be caught up in the emotion
of it all and trying to put together these new
(17:17):
rules and regulations. And then of course you have Messi
on the other side, chirping away as he does, try
to influence things as best he can. And I think
there was a thin the lip breeder said in one
of the media postings that said Messi said something to
the effect of, hey, do you know who I am?
You need to make the right core. So you know,

is that hyperbally is that speculation?
Speaker 4 (17:41):
Messi has earned his right to be respected, but.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
Certainly you hope that they pushed aside. The fascinating thing
about the referee for this game coming up at Argentina England.
It's a refining called Alfare, who is a MLS referee
and he obviously has read Messi in MLS for Miami.
He's a very well respected referee domestically. This will be

the biggest game of his career. I would imagine he's
going to be required to really put.
Speaker 4 (18:12):
A handle on the emotion of it.
Speaker 3 (18:13):
It will be a fistfight, it would be a street fight,
this game mixed in with world class players. But he's
going to have to temper that emotion, have to control
that game and not let it get out of hand.
So it's it's a big game for the players, but
a big game for an American based referee as well,
Which is which is?

Which is fantastic? All right?

Speaking of emotions, what's England like right now leading up
to kickoff? What's the whole country, what's the what's the
temper there, temper temperature there?

You know, we've been fortunate. We've we've been the bridesmaid,
never the pride.

We've we've got there at the precipice of finals in
twenty twenty in the Euros and we fell to Italy.
We've lost of Croatia in the semi final of a
World Cup in twenty eighteen, so you know, we think
we should be It's the first time in World Cup
history that the top four seeded teams have made the
semi finals.

So England is seated number four.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
And I believe Argentina, based on their World Cup and
Copra America victories, are actually seeded number one.
Speaker 4 (19:12):
You could speculate should France be in that number.

One spot for sure, but England is definitely going to
shut down, as will Argentina. They will be focused heavily
on this game.

The interesting thing is being.

A twelve o'clock kick for specific time three o'clock on
the East Coast and Atlanta, well it's eight o'clock primetime
in the UK, being eight hours ahead of US on Pacific,
so it will it will be every set of eyeballs
will be.

It's a chance to make to go to the World
Cup final. Of course, with a German head coach. Who
would have thought, and it's going to be a fascinating matchup.
But I think I think the English are quietly confident.
I think we have we believe we have a good chance.
We wanted this game, I think just for just for
that the theater of playing Argentina and Messi in the

World Cup, which obviously for the English don want to
make this the last game that Messi will ever play
in a World Cup and then get there on Sunday
in New Jersey and play the Spanish in an all
European final and hopefully get one over the finish line.

ten days away from training camp, and so we have
a lot of these lists coming out, so ten days
away from training camp, and the one that's creating the
most buzz out there ten days from camp is the
top ten quarterback list that ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. He did

his research, he ranked, or he polled coaches, executives and scouts.
Doesn't tell us which ones have no idea, but he
came out with his top ten. What really had people
buzzing is something we talked about yesterday in our six
o'clock hour, Josh Allen being ahead of Patrick Mahomes and
then and then here in Seattle. I'm sure they weren't
(23:13):
talking about this as much nationally since they've been doubting
our guy for years, but it was certainly conspicuous to
us that Sam Donald did not crack the top ten
here in Seattle. So you know, maybe we're a little bias.
Maybe we're riding this Super Bowl wave. So I thought
(23:34):
maybe we have a conversation today Ashley on Okay, who
would we take out? I mean it's one thing to
say our guy should be a top ten guy, but
of the top ten guys, who do we think our
guy is better than that? We would trade him? Yeah,
we we would not trade him for that quarterback. We
(23:54):
don't think that would be an upgrade. Ok So let's
talk about Sam Donald and who really shouldn't be ahead
of him on this top ten list. Josh Allen, No, no,
I don't think so either. Patrick Mahomes, No, no, I
don't think so either. Matthew Stafford, No, no, I don't
think so either. I mean Matt Stafford is the only

guy that solved Mike McDonald's defense last year. So yeah,
and he's just special now in terms of like a
long term investment, maybe maybe I'll go there. I mean,
Matt Stafford can't have too many more years.

No, I would hope not.

Joe Burrow.
Speaker 1 (24:31):
I don't know Joe Burrow.
Speaker 5 (24:32):
I mean, Joe Burrow is very good, but he's very
injury prone and doesn't seem very reliable.

You know what, I think it's fair to knock him
a little bit, but I do believe when he's on
the field he is exceptional. And so let's just put
it this way. I would rank Joe Burrow ahead of
Sam Donold, but I don't think it's a.

Runaway, right, A favorite is not as dependable because of
his injuries.
Speaker 2 (24:54):
Yeah. Number five, Lamar Jackson coming off a rough year.
Speaker 5 (24:58):
He did have a rough year, but I do I
think he's better than last year actually showed.
Speaker 1 (25:03):
Yeah, so I think i'd take Lamar.
Speaker 2 (25:05):
Yeah, I think so too, And I think that we
do have to allow any player at any level and
any sport to have an off year. Yeah, I would agree,
you know, and be able to, especially when they've accomplished
as much, at least individually as Lamar jacks I mean,
he's won two MVPs and should have won the third.
Speaker 1 (25:21):
Correct.
Speaker 2 (25:21):
He was better than Josh Allen two years ago in
terms of his production, and so yeah, I think that
Lamar gets a pass for twenty twenty six, and considering
everything that he's done on a football field, I'd rank
them him ahead as well. So we're in an agreement
on this, but that he's next five, Dak Prescott at
number six, I don't know.
Speaker 5 (25:42):
I can't quite understand all of the hype around Dak
Prescott because.
Speaker 2 (25:47):
I think that's fair.
Speaker 5 (25:48):
He I mean, the team underperforms every year, so what
is he really doing for them?
Speaker 1 (25:53):
I put Sam out of Dak press Yeah, I think
I would too.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
Yeah, and I like Dak Prescott, but I'll tell you,
like three four years ago, I really like Dak Prescott
and I thought to myself, Man, this guy really gets overlooked.
And yeah, he puts up numbers, but then again, he's
got CD Lamb and George Pickens last year in his lineup,
and yeah, where are those big wins? Where are those
playoff wins? I mean, it seems like it's always about
(26:20):
championships until Sam Darnald wins one and now we look
at everything else but that, right, And so I would
put Sam Darnoald out of Dak Prescott.
Speaker 5 (26:29):
I would, yeah, And I do think obviously you can
blame the Cowboys defense on some of their crappiness, but
I just don't. Yeah, I just don't understand why Dak
Prescott is continuously so hyped.
Speaker 2 (26:40):
Justin Herbert is probably overhyped, and I've probably contributed to
that he's at number seven. I personally think he's excellent,
except for the fact that I think he has to
we have to lay some of that abuse that he
takes on himself. I think he is defiant in his
getting rid of the football. Yeah, he's downright. I know
(27:03):
he doesn't get a lot of protection, but it's almost
as if he's a glutton for punishment. Throw the damn
ball away, and I'm really starting to run out of excuses.
You know, it can't be all on the offensive line Herbert, right,
But I do think he's an exceptional talent, So I
would put him ahead of Sam Donald. But I'm gonna
(27:26):
say for one more year and then that's it. Yeah,
he improve it this year, and if Sam has a
little bit of an off year or I'm flip flopping
that next season for sure.
Speaker 5 (27:35):
Yeah, you'd have to prove something this year because you Yeah,
we all know you're tough. We get it, but we
don't need to see it on display constantly. At some point,
you've got to make smarter decisions and then some of
your biggest moments you've made the most boneheaded decisions.
Speaker 2 (27:50):
Drake May. No, no, you wouldn't.
Speaker 1 (27:53):
Put oh no, I would not put Drake May ahead
of Sam Donald. I would put Sam Donald ahead of
Drake May.
Speaker 2 (27:57):
Well, they did play this little game called the Super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (28:00):
How'd it go?
Speaker 2 (28:02):
Well? I will say this in Drake May's defense. Sam
Donald didn't have to face the Seahawks defense. That's true, Okay.
And Drake took a huge step forward in his second year.
I get why he's ranked ahead of Sam because you're
glowing for right now. You're kind of projecting in a
way for the upcoming year. And if he took that
(28:22):
big of a jump where he was an MVP candidate
in year number two, he's probably going to take another
jump forward in year number three. I don't know if
like head to head right now, I don't know. Maybe
that might be my bias poking through, But I do
understand why Drake May's on this list ahead of Sam Donald,
(28:44):
Jared Goff.
Speaker 5 (28:46):
I mean, he puts up a lot of numbers, but again,
where are the big wins to go along with it?
They just seem to fall short, and it seems oftentimes
to be partly his fault.
Speaker 2 (28:56):
I'm going to put Sam ahead of Jared Goff, Yeah
at this point, And I've come a long way on
Jared Golf. Actually, he's been my fantasy quarterback for each
of the last two years.
Speaker 1 (29:05):
Yeah, I love him, and I love the Lions. I
wish they could do better.
Speaker 2 (29:08):
Yeah, but considering how many weapons he has there in Detroit,
I don't think it should be a big surprise that
he's having some statistical success there. But man, I think
I think he shrinks sometimes in those big moments, and
our guy kind of stepped up in the biggest moments
a year ago. So I'd put Sam ahead of him,
and then Caleb Williams is number ten. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (29:32):
I mean I can understand why they put him in
there because Chicago had some very exciting moments last year,
and he helped author a lot of those exciting endings.
But the problem is some of those games shouldn't have
been as exciting as they were, and Chicago kind of
spent three quarters sucking their thumbs and then decided to
play in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 1 (29:52):
So I just can't. I can't put him ahead of
Sam down.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
He seemed to get a lot of good results last year,
but I don't know if the process was equaled the results. Yeah,
and you know who had a very similar season to
Caleb Williams the year before, Jade and Daniels. And it's
like he had a horseshoe up as butt two years ago. Daniels, Well,
guess what, that's lucky horseshoe fell out. And then I
(30:18):
thought Caleb Williams looked very similar all these crazy, wacky
fourth quarter comebacks. And there's no doubt that he's an
incredible talent that could be seen. But I don't know
if the decision making process was even good a year ago.
So I mean he he is a product of hype him.
I'd put Sam out of him as well. So to me,
(30:39):
I think, I mean, as much as we're like not
top ten, I mean I still don't have him top eight,
but I put Sam in the top ten. I put
him in over Prescott, Goff and Williams on this list.
That's how I would do it. And I think that
it just as funny that World Championships moved the needle
so much for so many quarterbacks unless Sam wins it,
(31:01):
and now it doesn't move the needle as much. So
I think Sam Donald's cracked the top ten in the
National Football League, and I think I'd put him right
there at about number nine.
Speaker 5 (31:10):
Yeah, And because it's not just about his athleticism or
his talent and skill, it's about as a whole, can
you lead a team? Can you make the right decisions
in the right moments? And I think he's proven it
May eight or nine.
Speaker 2 (31:22):
I think I kind of double spoke there eight eight,
So I wouldn't put him out of Herbert yet. I
wouldn't put him ahead of May, but i'd put him
out of Williams goff In Prescott. I'd put him there
at number eight. And I still believe Sam Donald's got
a lot more ceiling to reach. I think in the
last couple of years he's figured out a lot of
things about how to play this game, when to go
for it, when to snap off, be aggressive. And I
(31:44):
think that he's going to apply that to a third
season as a full time starter with the confidence. As
Hugh Millen pointed out, he's never before had the confidence
of entering a season as a Super Bowl champion. We
might yet see the best in Sam Donald here in
the years to come.

Yeah, And by the time the Seahawks win the fifth
Super Bowl, other people.
Speaker 1 (32:02):
Will believe it too.
Speaker 2 (32:04):
Yeah, maybe he'll get to the number seven. Yeah, after
five Super Bowls. Reckless at breakfast next Yeah, I got
to talk about Luis Castillo again today on Sports Radio
ninety three point three kh A RFM. But I'm gonna
talk to some Luis Castillo again because another round of
rumors have started, and I just want to warn everybody.
I think there's some podcasters and bloggers out there that
(32:25):
really have some really interesting, fresh opinions on baseball. There's
some that don't. And yet I'm not sure there is
a podcaster or blogger out there that understands what trade
value is. So don't get overwrought by somebody who's a
Mets fan who's made a trade to get Las Montes
(32:49):
from us, because they don't know what they're talking about. Okay,
So don't worry, don't panic, and don't get over stressed
over it. But certainly these all are the sources that
are stirring up all this conversation. Sure you can look
at the Mariners situation and say they have too many
starting pitchers, trading deadline is coming up, who should you trade?
(33:13):
If you're not looking at any other variables, you're like well,
you should trade the sixth best guy of the six
the one that is the oldest and makes the most money.
Speaker 1 (33:22):
Yeah, that would make the most sense.
Speaker 2 (33:23):
Yeah, that's who you would like to trade at the
trading deadline. But the truth of the matter is, as
I've talked about numerous times, he doesn't hold a lot
of trade value out there. So that's why the last
twenty four hours of Luis Castillo trade talk has been
a bit interesting. For example, the New York Mets have
come up, and again this is a podcaster and a blogger,
(33:45):
and he got Mariners all all riled up, Mariner fans
all riled up because he suggested Castillo and Las Montes
for Jorge Polanco and Luke Weaver. I think it's actually
kind of creative from the standpoint of Kudjore Polonko. A
Polonko type help us more down the stretch than a
(34:11):
sixth starting pitcher who may move to the bullpen as
early as Friday. You know, yeah, we could definitely use
a hitter. And we liked Polonko, right, I mean, he
finished last season terrific for us, but he's hardly played
this year. When he has played, he hasn't played well,
and he carries a big salary himself two years, forty
(34:33):
million dollars. Here's why it's creative, because you're if you're
gonna move Castillo, there's the potential you're going to have
to take back a bad contract in return. But maybe
that bad contract helps you become a better team right now.
But I need that player that you get in return
to be better than Castillo is a pitcher, and I'm
(34:53):
not sure Polonko satisfies that. Luke Weaver is a nice addition.
He is dominating right handers this season, and he's been
very good as a reliever of the last three years,
and he's been very good again this year. But I
don't know if the Mariners are in the eleven million
dollars for a middle reliever market like the Mets and
the Yankees and the Dodgers get to play in that market.
(35:15):
That's just one of those things that most teams don't
spend a ton of money on, is a middle reliever
making eleven million dollars a year. The Mets do it
because they're terrible and stupid. So I don't mind the
creativity abound this. But the two things that I do
mind is if I'm going to trade Castillo for a
(35:35):
veteran hitter. I need that hitter to be hitting well
right now. Okay, we have enough problems. We can't now
try to resurrect Polanco season. Also, Las Montes is right out.
You can have another one of our prospects, but not
one of our big guys. You can't have Montes in
this trade. No chance. The Atlanta Braves have come up
(35:55):
in the last twenty four hours as a possibility again.
They are in first place right now. They are trying
to contend, and yes they need starting pitching help. But
I don't see this as being you know what this
is gonna look like. If Castillo gets traded to the
Atlanta Braves, it's gonna be Castillo for some prospect ew Yeah,
I mean they're not gonna give up a good hitter,
(36:17):
one of their good hitters. They're not gonna give us
Matt Olson for Luis Castillo. They might give us Austin
Riley because they went out from underneath that contract. But
he's hitting two oh eight and strikes out two times
every at bat.
Speaker 1 (36:28):
And has a big contract. So what are we really gaining.
Speaker 2 (36:31):
You Well, I mean, you get a right handed thumper
who plays third base, which is possibly a hole for you,
but he's he's hitting horribly this year, and of course
they want to get out of his contract. So I
don't really see that as a marriage unless you want
to be angry by the fact that we made a
trade deadline trade where we were the sellers and not buyers,
because that's what you're gonna get if you trade with
(36:53):
the Atlanta Braves. Now last one and I'll do this quickly.
Chicago Cubs and again another podcaster, slash blogger Flow did
this out, but it's got the internet all buzzing. Say
a Suzuki straight up, yes, I'll do that.
Speaker 1 (37:08):
How I just don't know how anyone would do that
for us.
Speaker 2 (37:12):
The Cubs aren't going to do that. Yeah, we but
I'd even throw in a prospect, now, one of our
best ones, but I'd throw in a good prospect to
make that happen. His contract expires at the end of
this year. There's more value in Suzuki's expiring contract than
there is Castillo on the books for twenty four million
again next year, especially when we really don't need him.
(37:32):
Kate Anderson's going to be that much older and that
much bigger a part of our starting rotation plans. So yeah,
if that's really what you want to do, blogger who's
speaking on behalf of the Cubs deal, let's shake hands
on that.

We make that happen.

I'll take the thirty one year old crusher of baseballs
with an expiring contract, and I know the Cubs really
need starting pitching. You can have our thirty three year
old right handed seventh best starter in our organization and
you can make him your ace if you'd like, if
you're that desperate for starting pitching. But yeah, we'll take Suzuki,
(38:12):
you take Castillo. Can't we shake on it? I mean,
I'll write it in pen if you want, I'll put
it in concrete, I'll chisel, I'll get a tattoo of it.
If you'd like, I'll do that trade. But I think again,
that's probably just reckless bloggers floating out trades that get
