Jerry Depoto, a lot of very interesting things that I'd
like to react to here this morning for you. And

And I don't know how much longer I'm going to
be asked to call it Chuck and Buck, because we
do have a statement to release today about Bucky being
absent for the last four months and it's going to continue.

So let me read the statement for you. This is
from Bucky and from KJR. My time away for medical
reasons gave me an opportunity to reflect on my priorities
and how I want to spend the next chapter of
my life. After a great deal of consideration, I've decided
not to return to the daily commitment of the morning show.
This was not an easy decision because I care deeply

about KJAR, the Morning Show, and the listeners who've been
part of this journey. I'm especially grateful to the station
for their support and willingness to work through this process
with me. We're continuing to explore ways I can remain
involved with KJR in a capacity that better fits my
life today, and I'm looking forward to seeing where those
conversations lead. So that was written by Bucky, I'm sure
(02:35):
approved by Kjar and we read the statement this morning
pretty much tells you what's going on going forward. I
would just say, if I could riff not nearly as
long as I did at six o'clock today on it,
I would just say that my plan is and it's
(02:55):
behind the scenes. I've kind of known this for a
little while, haven't been able to share some of this
with people for a little while. But I also think
that there is a way, and I think Bucky's on board,
and you know now it's now a matter of negotiation
that we can keep him part of the show in
some capacity. But obviously he's not going to be getting
(03:16):
up with us at that ripe old time at three
or four o'clock.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
In the morning and call him just to make sure
we should.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Let's just keep doing that, Let's keep waking him up
so so he won't be part of the daily show anymore.
We will be changing the name there's That's not the
only change that's going to occur here in the near future.
Hopefully we'll be adding to the show in some capacity
here in the very near future. In those conversations obviously

are going to start in earnest. Well, they've already kind
of been held a few of them behind the scenes,
but certainly we're going to get down to the bottom
of that going forward. So not the only adjustment that
will be made to the morning show, but this was
the big announcement that we've all sort of been waiting
to find out. And so Bucky again no longer going

to be a part of the morning show as a fixture,
but certainly we're working to keep him part of the
morning show, part of KJR. And that's why you continue
your Hear's commercials, that's why we get to spend time
on Bucky today actually talking about Bucky and talking about
missing Bucky and being able to say best of luck
to Busy.

And I admire Bucky for taking the time to figure
out what's best for him and his health and his family,
and I think I, you know, want nothing but the
best for all of them, for.

All of us, Yeah, for sure, for sure. So thank
you for your patience. I know that it's been a
little difficult being in the dark on this, not exactly
been easy for us either, but now you know, some
of you can say I was right. I knew he
wasn't coming back. That's important to you. But certainly we,

you know, wanted to exhaust every opportunity to bring him back,
and now that he's not, we can move forward. But
Bucky's healthy and just wants to keep it that way.
I think that's about as clear as I can make

about Demond Williams Junior in that conversation. And the Mariners
do finally return to the baseball field tonight at home

against the San Francisco Giants as their second half gets
underway and hopefully it will be more positive than the
first half was. And that's where we drop the information
that Adam Jude uncovered he got a little one on
one yesterday with Jerry Depoto, and a lot of things
to react to and Before we get into some of

the details, I just want to say I realized that
I sort of have this reputation as a depoto apologist.
I wouldn't even describe my relationship with Jerry as good.
I would describe my relationship with Jerry as hey, Chuck,
hi Jerry, and that's about it. I don't have some
pipeline to him. We don't exchange texts, I don't ever

call him, we've never hung out personally, none of that.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
I have to reintroduce myself to him every time. So
if that tells you anything about my relationship.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
But but if you hear me like defend him support
him more than others, is because I'm sorry. I really
think he's good at what he does, agreed, and he's
not perfect, And I think one of his biggest weaknesses
is his ability to relate via the Sometimes he has
(08:01):
said some really stupid, tactless things, and he should be
better at that because he's a splendid orator, like Eve's
a smart guy and he can really explain things well,
so there's really not any excuse for those moments where
he just blunders the explanation. And so he's had a
few of those moments. Also, I have been hyper critical
(08:25):
of Jerry over the years, for you've done a nice
job putting together a competitive team. Where are those championship moves?
And I rode him about that on these very airwaves
hard until last year at the trading deadline, those were
championship moves. Finally, those were moves saying we're about winning
(08:45):
the World Series. But I think he's done, along with
Justin and the entire organization, a fantastic job of giving
us a winning product that has a very bright future.
And not only do I believe that he has put
us and a championship window right now, We're going to
be in that championship window for a long time because
(09:06):
of the way that Jerry has structured things going forward.
So yes, I do think he's really good with some flaws,
all right. So that sort of explains my analysis of
Jerry Depoto over the years. But then I read this
Adam Jette article, this one on one, and I know,
I know, because there are there are a lot of
(09:28):
people out there listening right now that don't like him,
don't like him at all, don't want him here. And
so you read it and you think to yourself, oh
my gosh, I can't believe he said that. Oh good night, nurse.
This again. I read it, and I'm like, I agree
one hundred percent, Coli, I agree one hundred percent. And
(09:50):
so let's get into some of those things that I
agree with. First of all, Adam asked him about the
general theme to the conversation was we need to be better.
And when I say we, everyone needs to be better.
According to Jerry, in general, I think the pitching staff
continues to do the things that are required to play
into the postseason, and that makes us feel really confident
(10:11):
that eventually we will figure ourselves out. But you know,
the rest of our group, our decision making, our roster composition,
it all needs to be better than it's been. And
that's for me, that's for the staff, and that's for
the players to figure out. I agree with that. I mean,
I think he's throwing himself under the bus roster composition
wise a little bit because he doesn't want to exclude
(10:33):
himself and Justin from criticism. And certainly there's a little bit,
but the fact that he led with our decision making,
I think that says something. Am I reading into that ashe.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
I don't think so, because I think that says, yeah,
we're aware, we're not. We don't have our head in
the sand. We don't think it's all going well. We
recognize everybody needs to be better. It's not just who's
actually going out on the field and performing, it's who's
in the dugout making decisions.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
I think, man, you know, maybe I'm reading into it
because it fits one of my narratives if I am,
forgive me, But I do believe that part of that
is the decision making of the players running the bases,
some of their defensive brain farts that they've had. Yeah,
I mean, it doesn't exclude the pitchers either. It certainly
doesn't exclude cal Raley and his pitch swing decisions that
(11:27):
he's made so far this year and Jpeves swing decisions
that he's made this year. But I think there's a
reason that he led with our decision making. I think
he's probably not happy with what Dan's done in the
first half either, And I'm reading into that, and he
certainly didn't say it out out front, but the fact
(11:50):
that he started with decision making kind of makes me
think that he's not too happy with some of the
managerial decisions that have been made so far in the
first half.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
Well, and again he's not naive, so if he's bringing
up decision making, he's not thinking it's all these other things.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
But Dan's doing a great job.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
I mean right, it's so you've got to know that
at least part of it has to do with the
Dan Wilson aspect of it.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
He also added to that we have generally not played
a clean game. We've not played the tight, buttoned up,
make the plays defense that we ordinarily do. We have
not been particularly good on the bases. We have just
not played like the Mariners play. And some of that
is pressing. And this gets back to that other thing like, okay,
all right, pressing, we want to do that pressing. I
(12:35):
want to say pressing and not caring, because sometimes it
comes off as not caring. I don't believe that this
team doesn't care. I don't believe that they don't have
a passion for winning. I was there in spring training when,
to a man, they knew what the objective was. They
had never been so bold about what the goal was
for the upcoming season, and it was the ultimate goal.
(12:56):
That's what it's about. So I think sometimes a struggling
base ball team can come off like they don't care
because they're frustrated that they're not being successful. I don't
really question the effort. Maybe the Arose Arena play Saturday aside,
and sometimes Randy doesn't give effort, but Randy's weird, So
(13:20):
I don't really question effort, but I do question focus,
And to me, that was a theme throughout the course
of this conversation between Adam and Jerry. He kept bringing
that up, and I think that reflects certainly on the
players more so than the manager.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
Focus.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
Focus for sure on the players. Brain farts on the
base pass, brain farts in the field's that's players first, Yes,
But I do think a manager has to take responsibility
for a team's lack of focus. If the president's going
to highlight that continuously in an interview as one of

the issues with why the Mariners are under five hundred
ninety seven games into the season when they might have
the best roster in the American League.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
Yeah, what's one of the things we talk about. That
is Dan's responsibility getting the most out of your team.
If your team isn't focused, you're not doing your job.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
Here is another question for him from Adam. Has the
team's performance in the first half affect of your thinking.
Going forward to Poto's response, not at all. We have
one of the most talented teams in the league, and
I think if you pulled around the league you'd get
a similar answer. That's true. I mean, if you just
cannot bring yourself to like anything about Jerry, or if

you're just in this. I'm a Mariner fan, but I
hate them. If you're one of those fans, you might
not think that's true. That's true.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
They still have the third highest odds to win the
World Series.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
All national analysts believe in them as much as I
believe them. Yeah, as much as Jerry believes in them.
The reason why they keep coming up as most disappointing
teams of the first half, alongside the Mets, who are
out of it and have a payroll twice the size
of ours, is because that's how much people believe in
this roster that followed the sport for a living. He added,
(15:16):
We've been able to weather the storm of injuries. Eh,
everybody has injuries, and coming out of the break, we're
hopeful that Julio and Brendan Donovan will be back out
there and that we get a cleaner there, it is
again more focused there. It is again group than the
one that went into the break, because that's going to
be required, absolutely, and I do think some of that
(15:38):
falls on the manager. You just can't continue to do
it the same way. You can't just continuously have people's backs.
Did you hear Brian Schmitzer last night, Yeah, air out
his team after one bet them played in a month.
If anybody had an excuse to have an off, rusty,
bad game, it was the Sounders last night. And Brian
Schmetzer as soon as that game was over, that is
(16:00):
it's unacceptable. That is not us and we are not
going to be that going forward. What's wrong with that?
Speaker 3 (16:06):
Nothing?
Speaker 2 (16:06):
And he even called them out for a lack on defense,
how poorly they played, saying they lacked like five different things.
Speaker 3 (16:12):
I thought it was great.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
I think it's great. And if a player can't take that,
if they're so thin skinned that they can't take being
called out when they when they're guilty, I call it
truth therapy. I think it's the greatest thing on planet Earth.
Do you ever have one of those moments where somebody
analyzed you, and you've had a lot of them, where
they you're sure they misanalyzed you, but when they're like,
(16:35):
oh my gosh, you just nailed me. Yeah, and it
causes you to go home and think about how you
can be a better person. Yep. Truth therapy works.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
It does.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
And you know, I don't think you should go out
and call people out individually by name, like Randy didn't
show effort here, and Caldon do this and who you know.
Speaker 1 (16:51):
Every once in a while, I think it's okay if
it's agreed very great once.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
In a while, yeah, if it's agreedious.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
But I do think calling your team out for a
lack of folk or poor base running or things like
that is okay.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
It should happen.
Speaker 1 (17:06):
All right, let's go to this one. It's a long list.
I don't think I got time to go through it.
But he's talked about pitching and how good the pitching
has been in the first half, and then that he's
sure it's going to continue into the second half. And
he did say that the piggyback plan, even though it
was strange for everyone, it did seem to write Luis
(17:26):
Castillo and Bryce Miller was spectacular in it. And those
things are also true. You know, you don't have a
problem with a piggyback. Certainly, nobody can say what a
runaway success it was, but those there's some truth to that.
Those are true statements that are be made now on
whether or not he's going to trade a starting pitcher.
He said it would be unusual at this time of
(17:47):
the year for a team that views itself as a contender,
which we do, to trade from the goodness of its
major league roster to answer other problems. But I can't
say that that's out of the question for us. It's
a trading deadline. There's not been any movement. I guess
Lance mccullor's junior got traded. I don't even know if
he even has a functioning right arm anymore. And so
(18:11):
it's been a strange There are seven teams that look
like they are sellers right now. I mean, we're two
weeks away from the end of July and there are
seven teams that look like trade possibilities, and they don't
exactly there's a reason why they're one of the seven.
They don't have a lot to trade. There's not a
(18:32):
lot of interest. So we've got a slow market. We
got a seller's market, a lot of things are gonna
have to play out in the next two and a
half weeks. And what he's saying is it might not
be a traditional trade deadline type deal. We might have
to trade a lot of teams, might have to trade
that are both contenders, and this is usually not what
(18:54):
you see at the deadline. We'll trade from a surplus
to establish to get back up something that addresses our weakness,
and we could do the same for you. So that
would put any one of your starting pitchers possibly on
the trading block for the right piece. And then finally
he did say about the lefties. At some point, we
(19:15):
just have to be better offensively against all pitching. We
do have a clear flaw for facing left handed pitching.
I hope people can't stand him, like you know how
rare it is to be that honest. He's the only
one that is in that organization. They won't even tell
us about injuries. He will tell you the truth, not
(19:36):
all the time. He covers some things up, but I
love that he's just like, yeah, we stunt against left
handed pitching, and that's something we'd like to resolve. Although
there are really no clear and obvious places we can
fit players on our roster, and there are no clear
and obvious players who are available right now. Those are
all truths. Everybody thinks, like, go get this guy, Well,
(19:58):
he's not available. Whatever it takes, they're not gonna get
anywhere in professional sports. John Schneider does not spend whatever
it takes. John Schneider makes the shrewdest damn trades in
the National Football League. No, No, if you run the
practice of that guy fits our needs, we're gonna give
them whatever it taks. You are gonna be You got,
(20:21):
you got like an eighteen month shelf life, and you're
gonna be one of the worst teams in baseball. You
just don't operate that way. You still gotta make good,
sensible moves to add the right pieces, and right now
they're just on't a lot of pieces available on the market. Yeah,
so it's gonna be a challenge going forward. But I
(20:42):
found a lot of honesty in the interview I did,
and I'm glad to hear some of it, because I
don't know if we have gotten much information along these lines.
They are aware of how bad they've been, they are
aware of what it's gonna take to fill those holes,
and it sounds like they're on the job, so I
do think it's going to be a much better second half.
(21:03):
I do think, as I've said all along, they will
eventually pull away. I get the frustration. I'm frustrated. I
don't know why we have to do this every year,
especially when we have a much better roster than our
peers in the American League West. But that's the position
that we're in. I do think they will get it together.
They will pull away. We will be in the playoffs,
and we will be a major threat in the World Series.
(21:25):
But this team played crappy in the first half of
the season. There's no getting around it. All right, Coming

And this isn't you know, you're not you're not polling writers,
or this is executives, coaches and whatnot. So I don't

you know, a bunch of talk show hosts somewhere. So
the four are JSN, nick Emon Woory, Devin Witherspoon, and
Leonard Williams. They got acknowledged as the top players among
the or among the top players at their positions. So

the four, let's rank the four. Okay, all right, JSN,

I would I mean, I know I'm biased, but I
would go Mike McDonald because the Chiefs were not good
last year, and I'm sorry, but didn't we beat the Rams.

We did beat the Rams okay a couple of times.

Now. Sean McVay very good head coach. Sean McVay. I
don't know we necessarily beat Sean McVay well in terms
of his offense, but I'm with you. Yeah, I think
he's the best head coach. I wouldn't trade him for anybody.
I said it last year. I think he's only going
to get better. I don't care if there's not enough

proving ground like Andy Reid has, or that even Sean
McVay has, even though they're similar age. Sean mcvage has
had a lot longer in the league proving that he's great.
I just wouldn't trade our guy for anybody. I'm going
McDonald won.

Yeah, And I think obviously if you're going for a career,
like the entirety of someone's going, but that's not where
we're that's what we're doing, right, because then i'd put
Andy Reid first.

go in at this stage. And then I don't even

coming up next, it is trade season and it's the
name that a lot of people seem to want the
Mariners to land. And I'm going to caution you don't
think it's a good idea. Sports Radio ninety three point
three KJRFM. All right, coming up at the top of

the hour, you're ohow your eight top story? So the day.
We do it every Friday here on the radio program,
and we have top news right here at KJR that
we'll share with you right out of the shoot. It's
our top story of the day. So we'll do that
at eight o'clock here today. But it's also trade season
and I've been hearing a name that's thrown out a lot.
The Mariners should be interested in this guy, and I'm
(31:54):
not dismissing it. I think that Baltimore's Taylor Ward would
be an upgrade to our roster, and he is having
a good year, but the unusual way that he has
gone about his good year strikes me as a bit worrisome.
Taylor Ward this year has suddenly, at the age of
(32:15):
thirty two, turned into an on base machine, which has
really been his flaw his entire career. That he's had
a an on base over three thirty five, which isn't
great once in his entire career, and he's thirty two
years old. That's a lengthy career. But for whatever reason,
for whatever reason, this year, he's got a three eighty
(32:37):
seven on base uh and he has a two point
war on war because of it. So he's been playing
at a rate of about a four war player at
this point in the season. So a lot of people think,
because he's also hitting lefties very well this year, that
here is a veteran who's kind of proven he can
hit at the major leagues. He's having a very good year.
(32:59):
He's doing so some of the things that this team
seems to miss, putting the ball in play more this
year and certainly getting on base more this year, and
so maybe this is the right fit. Well, let's assume
he's going to be available at all, because the Orioles
are not on that list of seven teams who are
out of it. They are still kind of holding on
(33:20):
because of how poor the American League has been so
far this season. So I don't even think he's technically available.
But if he does become available and the Mariners were
to acquire him, I would think to myself, all right,
that's an upgrade to the lineup that works. But I
do worry a little bit about how a Tiger could
(33:40):
change his stripes like that, because he only has six
home runs this year. It's like, this is a guy
that hit thirty six home runs a year ago and
he's on pace to hit eleven and people are treating
it like he's having some big breakout year. Well, he
in the offseason, I'll be decided, I'm gonna get on
(34:02):
base and put the ball in play more. I mean,
his batting average is up twenty seven points, is on
base is up seventy points, but his slugging is down
over one hundred points so far this season, and so
he's not the player that he's been. It's almost as
if he's wearing a costume. He's like, hey, everybody, it's
(34:26):
me Taylor Ward. You thought I was Ricky Yeller get me? Yeah, yeah, exactly. Hey, surprise,
it's me Taylor Ward. I'm not an on base guy.
Speaker 3 (34:36):
Did you guys know? You guys didn't know that was
me this little time.
Speaker 1 (34:39):
So he's just something. I mean, it's one thing if
you do that from twenty four to twenty five, when
you do that from thirty one to thirty two, that
actually sends off some red flags for me, like what
are you? Because frankly, if I were to acquire you,
even though we could use a guy that gets on base,
we could use a guy that hits lefties, and we
(35:01):
could use a guy that puts the ball in play
more than what he used to, I'd still prefer having
the Taylor Ward that hit thirty six home runs last year,
drove in over one hundred runs, even though the batting
average in the on base wasn't so good. So if
you don't feel that way, if you're like, no, no, no,
we need the on bass guy. We need to put
(35:22):
the ball in play guy. We need a veteran, a
sorer thing than what we have in our everyday lineup.
But what happens if he wakes up one morning and
he's not that guy. I mean, he's been the power
hitting guy his whole career, and now all of a sudden,
he's on bass guy. I'm not sure I trust that,
and I certainly am not going to give up a
(35:42):
lot to acquire that, right. So would I take him? Yeah,
he was available. If he was like bundled up in
a basket and just left outside T mobile, would I
drag him in and raise him as our own?
Speaker 3 (35:54):
Yep, I'd do that. I'm moses it.
Speaker 1 (35:57):
Yeah, I'd take him out of the reds and see
what he can do, maybe take us to the promised
land here? But am I going to if he he
might end up being the number one bat on the market?
Am I gonna pay number one bat on the market
price for a guy that has curiously changed the baseball
player that he is in his mid frickin thirties. I'm

worried about.

That, And that's understandable, Yeah, because you don't you wonder
especially I feel like here we get burned by people
who come in and aren't the same player they were.
And if someone is already not being the same player
he was, how's that going to translate?

So let me read the statement for you. This is
from Bucky and from KJR. My time away for medical
reasons gave me an opportunity to reflect on my priorities
and how I want to spend the next chapter of
my life. After a great deal of consideration, I've decided
not to return to the daily commitment of the morning show.
This was not an easy decision because I care deeply

about KJAR, the Morning Show, and the listeners who've been
part of this journey. I'm especially grateful to the station
for their support and willingness to work through this process
with me. We're continuing to explore ways I can remain
involved with KJR in a capacity that better fits my
life today, and I'm looking forward to seeing where those
conversations lead. So that was written by Bucky, I'm sure

approved by Kjar and we read the statement this morning
pretty much tells you what's going on going forward. I
would just say, if I could riff not nearly as
long as I did at six o'clock today on it,
I would just say that my plan is and it's

behind the scenes. I've kind of known this for a
little while, haven't been able to share some of this
with people for a little while. But I also think
that there is a way, and I think Bucky's on board,
and you know now it's now a matter of negotiation
that we can keep him part of the show in
some capacity. But obviously he's not going to be getting

up with us at that ripe old time at three
or four o'clock.

In the morning and call him just to make sure
we should.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Let's just keep doing that, Let's keep waking him up
so so he won't be part of the daily show anymore.
We will be changing the name there's That's not the
only change that's going to occur here in the near future.
Hopefully we'll be adding to the show in some capacity
here in the very near future. In those conversations obviously

are going to start in earnest. Well, they've already kind
of been held a few of them behind the scenes,
but certainly we're going to get down to the bottom
of that going forward. So not the only adjustment that

do finally return to the baseball field tonight at home

against the San Francisco Giants as their second half gets
underway and hopefully it will be more positive than the
first half was. And that's where we drop the information
that Adam Jude uncovered he got a little one on
one yesterday with Jerry Depoto, and a lot of things
to react to and Before we get into some of
(07:05):
the details, I just want to say I realized that
I sort of have this reputation as a depoto apologist.
I wouldn't even describe my relationship with Jerry as good.
I would describe my relationship with Jerry as hey, Chuck,
hi Jerry, and that's about it. I don't have some
pipeline to him. We don't exchange texts, I don't ever
(07:28):
call him, we've never hung out personally, none of that.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
I have to reintroduce myself to him every time. So
if that tells you anything about my relationship.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
But but if you hear me like defend him support
him more than others, is because I'm sorry. I really
think he's good at what he does, agreed, and he's
not perfect, And I think one of his biggest weaknesses
is his ability to relate via the Sometimes he has
(08:01):
said some really stupid, tactless things, and he should be
better at that because he's a splendid orator, like Eve's
a smart guy and he can really explain things well,
so there's really not any excuse for those moments where
he just blunders the explanation. And so he's had a
few of those moments. Also, I have been hyper critical
(08:25):
of Jerry over the years, for you've done a nice
job putting together a competitive team. Where are those championship moves?
And I rode him about that on these very airwaves
hard until last year at the trading deadline, those were
championship moves. Finally, those were moves saying we're about winning
(08:45):
the World Series. But I think he's done, along with
Justin and the entire organization, a fantastic job of giving
us a winning product that has a very bright future.
And not only do I believe that he has put
us and a championship window right now, We're going to
be in that championship window for a long time because
(09:06):
of the way that Jerry has structured things going forward.
So yes, I do think he's really good with some flaws,
all right. So that sort of explains my analysis of
Jerry Depoto over the years. But then I read this
Adam Jette article, this one on one, and I know,
I know, because there are there are a lot of
(09:28):
people out there listening right now that don't like him,
don't like him at all, don't want him here. And
so you read it and you think to yourself, oh
my gosh, I can't believe he said that. Oh good night, nurse.
This again. I read it, and I'm like, I agree
one hundred percent, Coli, I agree one hundred percent. And
(09:50):
so let's get into some of those things that I
agree with. First of all, Adam asked him about the
general theme to the conversation was we need to be better.
And when I say we, everyone needs to be better.
According to Jerry, in general, I think the pitching staff
continues to do the things that are required to play
into the postseason, and that makes us feel really confident
(10:11):
that eventually we will figure ourselves out. But you know,
the rest of our group, our decision making, our roster composition,
it all needs to be better than it's been. And
that's for me, that's for the staff, and that's for
the players to figure out. I agree with that. I mean,
I think he's throwing himself under the bus roster composition
wise a little bit because he doesn't want to exclude
(10:33):
himself and Justin from criticism. And certainly there's a little bit,
but the fact that he led with our decision making,
I think that says something. Am I reading into that ashe.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
I don't think so, because I think that says, yeah,
we're aware, we're not. We don't have our head in
the sand. We don't think it's all going well. We
recognize everybody needs to be better. It's not just who's
actually going out on the field and performing, it's who's
in the dugout making decisions.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
I think, man, you know, maybe I'm reading into it
because it fits one of my narratives if I am,
forgive me, But I do believe that part of that
is the decision making of the players running the bases,
some of their defensive brain farts that they've had. Yeah,
I mean, it doesn't exclude the pitchers either. It certainly
doesn't exclude cal Raley and his pitch swing decisions that
(11:27):
he's made so far this year and Jpeves swing decisions
that he's made this year. But I think there's a
reason that he led with our decision making. I think
he's probably not happy with what Dan's done in the
first half either, And I'm reading into that, and he
certainly didn't say it out out front, but the fact
(11:50):
that he started with decision making kind of makes me
think that he's not too happy with some of the
managerial decisions that have been made so far in the
first half.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
Well, and again he's not naive, so if he's bringing
up decision making, he's not thinking it's all these other things.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
But Dan's doing a great job.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
I mean right, it's so you've got to know that
at least part of it has to do with the
Dan Wilson aspect of it.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
He also added to that we have generally not played
a clean game. We've not played the tight, buttoned up,
make the plays defense that we ordinarily do. We have
not been particularly good on the bases. We have just
not played like the Mariners play. And some of that
is pressing. And this gets back to that other thing like, okay,
all right, pressing, we want to do that pressing. I
(12:35):
want to say pressing and not caring, because sometimes it
comes off as not caring. I don't believe that this
team doesn't care. I don't believe that they don't have
a passion for winning. I was there in spring training when,
to a man, they knew what the objective was. They
had never been so bold about what the goal was
for the upcoming season, and it was the ultimate goal.
(12:56):
That's what it's about. So I think sometimes a struggling
base ball team can come off like they don't care
because they're frustrated that they're not being successful. I don't
really question the effort. Maybe the Arose Arena play Saturday aside,
and sometimes Randy doesn't give effort, but Randy's weird, So
(13:20):
I don't really question effort, but I do question focus,
And to me, that was a theme throughout the course
of this conversation between Adam and Jerry. He kept bringing
that up, and I think that reflects certainly on the
players more so than the manager.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
Focus.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
Focus for sure on the players. Brain farts on the
base pass, brain farts in the field's that's players first, Yes,
But I do think a manager has to take responsibility
for a team's lack of focus. If the president's going
to highlight that continuously in an interview as one of
(14:04):
the issues with why the Mariners are under five hundred
ninety seven games into the season when they might have
the best roster in the American League.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
Yeah, what's one of the things we talk about. That
is Dan's responsibility getting the most out of your team.
If your team isn't focused, you're not doing your job.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
Here is another question for him from Adam. Has the
team's performance in the first half affect of your thinking.
Going forward to Poto's response, not at all. We have
one of the most talented teams in the league, and
I think if you pulled around the league you'd get
a similar answer. That's true. I mean, if you just
cannot bring yourself to like anything about Jerry, or if
(14:41):
you're just in this. I'm a Mariner fan, but I
hate them. If you're one of those fans, you might
not think that's true. That's true.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
They still have the third highest odds to win the
World Series.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
All national analysts believe in them as much as I
believe them. Yeah, as much as Jerry believes in them.
The reason why they keep coming up as most disappointing
teams of the first half, alongside the Mets, who are
out of it and have a payroll twice the size
of ours, is because that's how much people believe in
this roster that followed the sport for a living. He added,
(15:16):
We've been able to weather the storm of injuries. Eh,
everybody has injuries, and coming out of the break, we're
hopeful that Julio and Brendan Donovan will be back out
there and that we get a cleaner there, it is
again more focused there. It is again group than the
one that went into the break, because that's going to
be required, absolutely, and I do think some of that
(15:38):
falls on the manager. You just can't continue to do
it the same way. You can't just continuously have people's backs.
Did you hear Brian Schmitzer last night, Yeah, air out
his team after one bet them played in a month.
If anybody had an excuse to have an off, rusty,
bad game, it was the Sounders last night. And Brian
Schmetzer as soon as that game was over, that is
(16:00):
it's unacceptable. That is not us and we are not
going to be that going forward. What's wrong with that?
Speaker 3 (16:06):
Nothing?
Speaker 2 (16:06):
And he even called them out for a lack on defense,
how poorly they played, saying they lacked like five different things.
Speaker 3 (16:12):
I thought it was great.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
I think it's great. And if a player can't take that,
if they're so thin skinned that they can't take being
called out when they when they're guilty, I call it
truth therapy. I think it's the greatest thing on planet Earth.
Do you ever have one of those moments where somebody
analyzed you, and you've had a lot of them, where
they you're sure they misanalyzed you, but when they're like,
(16:35):
oh my gosh, you just nailed me. Yeah, and it
causes you to go home and think about how you
can be a better person. Yep. Truth therapy works.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
It does.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
And you know, I don't think you should go out
and call people out individually by name, like Randy didn't
show effort here, and Caldon do this and who you know.
Speaker 1 (16:51):
Every once in a while, I think it's okay if
it's agreed very great once.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
In a while, yeah, if it's agreedious.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
But I do think calling your team out for a
lack of folk or poor base running or things like
that is okay.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
It should happen.
Speaker 1 (17:06):
All right, let's go to this one. It's a long list.
I don't think I got time to go through it.
But he's talked about pitching and how good the pitching
has been in the first half, and then that he's
sure it's going to continue into the second half. And
he did say that the piggyback plan, even though it
was strange for everyone, it did seem to write Luis
(17:26):
Castillo and Bryce Miller was spectacular in it. And those
things are also true. You know, you don't have a
problem with a piggyback. Certainly, nobody can say what a
runaway success it was, but those there's some truth to that.
Those are true statements that are be made now on
whether or not he's going to trade a starting pitcher.
He said it would be unusual at this time of
(17:47):
the year for a team that views itself as a contender,
which we do, to trade from the goodness of its
major league roster to answer other problems. But I can't
say that that's out of the question for us. It's
a trading deadline. There's not been any movement. I guess
Lance mccullor's junior got traded. I don't even know if
he even has a functioning right arm anymore. And so
(18:11):
it's been a strange There are seven teams that look
like they are sellers right now. I mean, we're two
weeks away from the end of July and there are
seven teams that look like trade possibilities, and they don't
exactly there's a reason why they're one of the seven.
They don't have a lot to trade. There's not a
(18:32):
lot of interest. So we've got a slow market. We
got a seller's market, a lot of things are gonna
have to play out in the next two and a
half weeks. And what he's saying is it might not
be a traditional trade deadline type deal. We might have
to trade a lot of teams, might have to trade
that are both contenders, and this is usually not what
(18:54):
you see at the deadline. We'll trade from a surplus
to establish to get back up something that addresses our weakness,
and we could do the same for you. So that
would put any one of your starting pitchers possibly on
the trading block for the right piece. And then finally
he did say about the lefties. At some point, we
(19:15):
just have to be better offensively against all pitching. We
do have a clear flaw for facing left handed pitching.
I hope people can't stand him, like you know how
rare it is to be that honest. He's the only
one that is in that organization. They won't even tell
us about injuries. He will tell you the truth, not
(19:36):
all the time. He covers some things up, but I
love that he's just like, yeah, we stunt against left
handed pitching, and that's something we'd like to resolve. Although
there are really no clear and obvious places we can
fit players on our roster, and there are no clear
and obvious players who are available right now. Those are
all truths. Everybody thinks, like, go get this guy, Well,

he's not available. Whatever it takes, they're not gonna get
anywhere in professional sports. John Schneider does not spend whatever
it takes. John Schneider makes the shrewdest damn trades in
the National Football League. No, No, if you run the
practice of that guy fits our needs, we're gonna give
them whatever it taks. You are gonna be You got,
(20:21):
you got like an eighteen month shelf life, and you're
gonna be one of the worst teams in baseball. You
just don't operate that way. You still gotta make good,
sensible moves to add the right pieces, and right now
they're just on't a lot of pieces available on the market. Yeah,
so it's gonna be a challenge going forward. But I
(20:42):
found a lot of honesty in the interview I did,
and I'm glad to hear some of it, because I
don't know if we have gotten much information along these lines.
They are aware of how bad they've been, they are
aware of what it's gonna take to fill those holes,
and it sounds like they're on the job, so I
do think it's going to be a much better second half.

I do think, as I've said all along, they will
eventually pull away. I get the frustration. I'm frustrated. I
don't know why we have to do this every year,
especially when we have a much better roster than our
peers in the American League West. But that's the position
that we're in. I do think they will get it together.
They will pull away. We will be in the playoffs,
and we will be a major threat in the World Series.

But this team played crappy in the first half of

And it's been ranking season here as of late. And
apparently this Jeremy Fowler list that had everybody talking on
all the talk shows, only four Seahawks, only four players

off the World Championship team ended up on the list.
There were some teams that had nine players that made
these lists, but the World Champs only had four guys.
And this isn't you know, you're not you're not polling writers,
or this is executives, coaches and whatnot. So I don't

know who who he pulled, but this is not just
you know, a bunch of talk show hosts somewhere. So
the four are JSN, nick Emon Woory, Devin Witherspoon, and
Leonard Williams. They got acknowledged as the top players among
the or among the top players at their positions. So
if those are the four we have to work on

the four, let's rank the four. Okay, all right, JSN,
Emon Worry, Devin Witherspoon, and Leonard Williams. Who are our

He just finished his rookie season. For Zabel, and I
hope for a lot more from him, and I think
we'll get a lot more, but I can understand him

Him, Andy Reid okay, Sean McVay okay, and then Kyle
Shanahan was fourth on that list. So do you agree
with the list? Let's do the head coaching best head
coaches in the National Football League depth chart, who's your
number one?

I would I mean, I know I'm biased, but I
would go Mike McDonald because the Chiefs were not good
last year, and I'm sorry, but didn't we beat the Rams.
Speaker 3 (26:48):
We did beat the Rams okay a couple of times.
Speaker 1 (26:50):
Now. Sean McVay very good head coach. Sean McVay. I
don't know we necessarily beat Sean McVay well in terms
of his offense, but I'm with you. Yeah, I think
he's the best head coach. I wouldn't trade him for anybody.
I said it last year. I think he's only going
to get better. I don't care if there's not enough

proving ground like Andy Reid has, or that even Sean
McVay has, even though they're similar age. Sean mcvage has
had a lot longer in the league proving that he's great.
I just wouldn't trade our guy for anybody. I'm going
McDonald won.
Speaker 2 (27:26):
Yeah, And I think obviously if you're going for a career,
like the entirety of someone's going, but that's not where
we're that's what we're doing, right, because then i'd put
Andy Reid first.
Speaker 3 (27:34):
But that's now where we're going. So I would go, yeah,
Mike McDonald, Sean McVay, Andy Reid.
Speaker 1 (27:38):
I would do Okay, that's exact order that I would
go in at this stage. And then I don't even
know if I put Shannon Okay, I'll give you Okay,
I'll give you Kyle Shannon, because I did say last
year I think he should be Coach of the Year
because of how many injuries he we had to deal
with a lot, and they still ended up with what
twelve thirteen wins on the season a year ago. But

my goodness, we don't have the same disparity. There's a
conversation out there. McVeigh versus McDonald. There is no conversation
Shanahan versus.
Speaker 3 (28:08):

They could go out to dinner together and McDonald would
be like, I'm gonna have the t bone and Kyle's
gonna have the chicken, and Kyle's gonna be like, how
did you know I was going to have chicken? Kind

coming up next, it is trade season and it's the
name that a lot of people seem to want the
Mariners to land. And I'm going to caution you don't
think it's a good idea. Sports Radio ninety three point

We do it every Friday here on the radio program,
and we have top news right here at KJR that
we'll share with you right out of the shoot. It's
our top story of the day. So we'll do that
at eight o'clock here today. But it's also trade season
and I've been hearing a name that's thrown out a lot.
The Mariners should be interested in this guy, and I'm
(31:54):
not dismissing it. I think that Baltimore's Taylor Ward would
be an upgrade to our roster, and he is having
a good year, but the unusual way that he has
gone about his good year strikes me as a bit worrisome.
Taylor Ward this year has suddenly, at the age of
(32:15):
thirty two, turned into an on base machine, which has
really been his flaw his entire career. That he's had
a an on base over three thirty five, which isn't
great once in his entire career, and he's thirty two
years old. That's a lengthy career. But for whatever reason,
for whatever reason, this year, he's got a three eighty
(32:37):
seven on base uh and he has a two point
war on war because of it. So he's been playing
at a rate of about a four war player at
this point in the season. So a lot of people think,
because he's also hitting lefties very well this year, that
here is a veteran who's kind of proven he can
hit at the major leagues. He's having a very good year.
(32:59):
He's doing so some of the things that this team
seems to miss, putting the ball in play more this
year and certainly getting on base more this year, and
so maybe this is the right fit. Well, let's assume
he's going to be available at all, because the Orioles
are not on that list of seven teams who are
out of it. They are still kind of holding on
(33:20):
because of how poor the American League has been so
far this season. So I don't even think he's technically available.
But if he does become available and the Mariners were
to acquire him, I would think to myself, all right,
that's an upgrade to the lineup that works. But I
do worry a little bit about how a Tiger could
(33:40):
change his stripes like that, because he only has six
home runs this year. It's like, this is a guy
that hit thirty six home runs a year ago and
he's on pace to hit eleven and people are treating
it like he's having some big breakout year. Well, he
in the offseason, I'll be decided, I'm gonna get on
(34:02):
base and put the ball in play more. I mean,
his batting average is up twenty seven points, is on
base is up seventy points, but his slugging is down
over one hundred points so far this season, and so
he's not the player that he's been. It's almost as
if he's wearing a costume. He's like, hey, everybody, it's
(34:26):
me Taylor Ward. You thought I was Ricky Yeller get me? Yeah, yeah, exactly. Hey, surprise,
it's me Taylor Ward. I'm not an on base guy.
Speaker 3 (34:36):
Did you guys know? You guys didn't know that was
me this little time.
Speaker 1 (34:39):
So he's just something. I mean, it's one thing if
you do that from twenty four to twenty five, when
you do that from thirty one to thirty two, that
actually sends off some red flags for me, like what
are you? Because frankly, if I were to acquire you,
even though we could use a guy that gets on base,
we could use a guy that hits lefties, and we
(35:01):
could use a guy that puts the ball in play
more than what he used to, I'd still prefer having
the Taylor Ward that hit thirty six home runs last year,
drove in over one hundred runs, even though the batting
average in the on base wasn't so good. So if
you don't feel that way, if you're like, no, no, no,
we need the on bass guy. We need to put
(35:22):
the ball in play guy. We need a veteran, a
sorer thing than what we have in our everyday lineup.
But what happens if he wakes up one morning and
he's not that guy. I mean, he's been the power
hitting guy his whole career, and now all of a sudden,
he's on bass guy. I'm not sure I trust that,
and I certainly am not going to give up a
(35:42):
lot to acquire that, right. So would I take him? Yeah,
he was available. If he was like bundled up in
a basket and just left outside T mobile, would I
drag him in and raise him as our own?
Speaker 3 (35:54):
Yep, I'd do that. I'm moses it.
Speaker 1 (35:57):
Yeah, I'd take him out of the reds and see
what he can do, maybe take us to the promised
land here? But am I going to if he he
might end up being the number one bat on the market?
Am I gonna pay number one bat on the market
price for a guy that has curiously changed the baseball
player that he is in his mid frickin thirties. I'm
(36:19):
worried about.
Speaker 2 (36:20):
That, And that's understandable, Yeah, because you don't you wonder
especially I feel like here we get burned by people
who come in and aren't the same player they were.
And if someone is already not being the same player
he was, how's that going to translate?
Speaker 3 (36:31):
When they come here and change more.
Speaker 1 (36:33):
Yeah, yeah, I don't know. Or he gets here and
he's like, ah, I don't want to be that guy anymore.
That guy's boring and it just gets on it first. Yeah,
Like I like that guy used to trot around the
bases on him dingers. I want to be him again,
