he is. They didn't leave it, let him leave the building,

All right, Well, let's talk about Jadarian Price some. I mean,
at this stage, any chance he's going to debut Saturday,
I can't imagine.

Check you missus third straight practice yesterday, upper leg soreness,
this kind of tongue in cheek, Mike McDonald said Saturday.
There's no reason in August the fifteenth to push something
like that and make it a month long thing instead
of a couple of days or so, but we'll see

how if he comes back to practice at all the
next couple of days. They I looked down at one
point during practice yesterday at my roster and looked up
at the running backs, and it's san It's George Allani,
Emmanuel Wilson, and a bunch of guys that have never
played an NFL game, including guys they just signed. A
fullback they just signed last week, a two hundred and

thirty five pounds running back they just signed last week. TJ.
Harden is there. It's going to be a pote pirie
of guys during the preseason games that haven't played NFL before.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Is there maybe a dark horse in all of this?
I mean, if ever there was a camp for somebody
buried on the depth chart to sort of turn heads,
I would think this is it at the running back
position here in Seattle. Is there a dark horse making
a move at all?
Speaker 5 (07:03):
Well, it was Jacartia Wright and then he injured his
lower look take an ankle or lower leg last week
and hasn't practiced since. He's missed the last four or
five practices. Velis Jones, who was on the practice squad
last year, was in fact elevated for the Super Bowl,
was on the field in uniform, didn't play. He's still here.

They converted him to wide receiver to begin camp, but
then when the injuries piled up at running back, they
put him back at running back. He's been getting time
a little bit with the ones. They're so thin. We
mentioned Emmanuel Wilson yesterday from green Bay to seven yard
back from green Bay that signed a one year deal.
He's moved up in prominence with Price out. He's getting
time with the ones. McDonald says he likes how he's

the physicality back that they really don't have. Otherwise, they
signed this TJ. Harden who's two hundred and thirty five
pounds that we've yet to see him do too much
because he just got here. But Wilson has been the
ben a benefactor and he's now become a short yardage back,
powerback option that probably they weren't thinking about when they

were going through Jenarian Price and George Hollaney as their
options at back.

Terry and Arnold seems to be the juicy topic right

now surrounding the organization. Mike McDonald addressed it yesterday. What
did we hear from the head coach?
Speaker 5 (08:38):
I was surprised Chuck how expansive he was when I
asked him. I thought he'd say, we look at everything,
we're in on everything, we'll see, but he did. He
said that we had a tryout, which is more than
originally reported. The original port was that he had a
second visit with the Seahawks. Well, in fact, they had
him on the field working out, and McDonald said it
was a really good tryout, said that I enjoyed meeting him,
(09:02):
getting to know him a little bit, called him by
name Terry on referenced to Terrion. There is some familiarity there,
he mentioned, and was asked about Carl Scott. We talked yesterday,
the Seahawks defensive back. I think we talked about that.
Recruited him Arnold to Alabama out of high school in Tallahassee,
(09:22):
Florida in twenty nineteen and twenty the last years that
Scott was at Alabama. Then he left, Scott did to
be the Minnesota Vikings defensive backs coach, and so he
never coached Arnold at Alabama into becoming a first round
draft pick. But he knows him. He's been in his
living room, his family and in Tallahassee, so he knows
him better than anybody else in Seahawks do, and they've
(09:45):
talked to him as well. McDonald also said that those
they've talked to that are in Arnold's corner have given
the Seahawks a lot of information and those are people
that the Seahawks really trust. So this summation of all
of this is there. Like we said yesterday, they're trying
to be the first in line if Arnold's exonerated from
(10:06):
all of this, and that's a big if he's got
an arraignment hearing this week in Tampa where he enter
a plea most likely not guilty, so we can remain
free and do these shopping visits to teams. There's some
conflicting reports whether the visit with the Saints you mentioned
was yesterday or today or what have you, but it's
(10:27):
supposed to be this week. The Houston Texans New York
Jets have inquired, according to his agent, Nicole nn and
she's trying to get a market for him. And it's
a really odd situation to try to drum up a
market for a guy who could be facing life in prison.
I asked MacDonald if the Seahawks, in their investigation of
Arnold's case, have gotten any read on whether there is

a possibility that he would be able to play the
entire season if everything went his way in this and
he said, we're still working through that. We don't know
that for sure, but they're trying to be of the line,
be the team that's met with him the most, that
he likes the most in case he gets exonerated, and
if he does, I would think, Chuck that he's not
going to command much more than maybe a one year,
(11:13):
near minimum salary contract. He's still only twenty three years old,
which is why, as we said yesterday, the football always wins.
We'll see what happens with his case, but the Seahawks
want to be there.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
Well, that was gonna be my next question. Is this
just a case of telling always wins, or can we
just cling to the idea that maybe this story and
they've already learned this is not nearly as bad as
it reads.
Speaker 5 (11:38):
Well, that's the inference from McDonald. He's said that they
have heard Arnold's side of the story. The inference man
the fact that we're still interested means we like what
we hear from that side of the story. Okay, And
as we said, that makes the Seahawks. It has to
make the Seahawks think he's going to be exonerated, or
else they wouldn't be going this far down the path.

It's one thing to kick the tires in for a
free agent visit. It's another to have him in again
and have him in a tryout. I mean, let's say it,
it's not very convenient for anybody to fly out to
Seattle unless it's something that's decently possible. And now he's
been here twice. So we asked him about the culture
and what McDonald has created and is the fear of
(12:21):
protecting that in this case, and he said, we're still
working through that. So they just want to put their
lot in. They want to make sure that they're at
the front of the line. If he gets exonerated because
then anyone can sign them, of course, and then it
would be a frenzy. And the Seahawks want to say, Hey, remember.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
Us our Seahawks insider Greg Belt joining us here on
this Tuesday morning talking some Seahawks football as we do
most every day during the football season here on the
morning show. Let's talk about the secondary. I mean, Terry
and Arnold, if added, could obviously take somebody's roster spot.

And I'm wondering how all this is gonna shake out.
I mean, you and I talked about aj Finley. You
wrote about him over the weekend. I heard you do
a segment on him yesterday with Jess, so obviously he's
creating some buzzd Anthony Bell was creating buzz I watched
Julian Neil do a workout in front of me yesterday.
That is one good looking athlete, and you know he's

going to find a spot considering the high draft pick
they picked used to pick him. You got Bud Clark
there as well. I mean, I would imagine that this
thing's getting overcrowded, that that secondary room, where who might
it squeeze out when this process comes to an end.
Speaker 5 (13:40):
Well, Noah had been Agay. The eighth year veteran Corda
was playing nickel first team Nicol yesterday. Bud Clark has
taken some of the Anthony Bell's reps as the big
nickel demon worry type hybrid in the first team defense.
In the last week or so, Bell's actually lost some ground,
even though he had to return for interception for a

touchdown off of Jalen Milroe yesterday and a big to
do and ran the link to the field and defense
and celebrate with him all that neim I preach. It
is someone that they started with as the fifth cornerback
to begin training camp. He looked like the heir to
Wreak Woolen in the alternating of three starters and two
spots between Woolen, Job and Witherspoon. Last year, Wells Pritchett
(14:25):
was in that starter camp. But now Evenogamy's been doing
that more Pritchett less, and the fact that they are
entertaining the possibility of adding Terry on Arnold tells me
they're not happy with Pritchett. They didn't say that. McDonald
said he loves that, and he loves Pritchett. He loves
the competition there but they're always shopping. They always want
(14:48):
to be shopping, and if they're trying to they must
not be set, and they aren't because they have a
veteran challenging Pritchett as well. Innogamy McDonald says he really
tries Bustin loves the cornerbacks that he has, but they're
still shopping, which tells me there's still ways to go there.
We'll see if Pritchett ends up getting job, if nothing happens,
(15:09):
or if they don't sign on Arnold, that's probably where
they would land. But Ignongi, I think, is gonna make
the team for special teams and the veteran presence they
need back there.
Speaker 1 (15:19):
This is something that I'm sure you're gonna cover later
in the week, so I'm probably caught catching you off
guard with it a little bit. But just from a
person that's covered football for a long time and have
seen offensive coordinators get introduced, Brian flur has never called
plays before. He's gonna get his opportunity this Saturday, and
(15:40):
yet he's gonna be up against you can only call
a certain small percentage of the playbook. He's not gonna
want to expose too much, So how how will do
you think that will work? How much or how much
is Mike gonna let Brian flurry, uh, you know, not
exposed too much of the playbook, but also let him
(16:00):
start getting used to calling plays before the games actually count.
Speaker 5 (16:06):
Not much, and I think I mean the practices. It's
not in a game obviously, but they use the walkie talkies.
It goes into the quarterbacks ear in the ear piece,
microph or speaker, So he's doing the mechanics of the
play calling. Now there is a difference. If we don't
know this yet. I haven't asked him if he's going
to be up in the press box or on the sidelines.
(16:29):
But if he's on in the press box, that's a
different deal. Kobiek was on the field. A lot of
coordinators these days want to be on the field because
they want to be able to reach out of touch
and talk to them face to face with their quarterbacks,
and the emotions of in the feel of the game
is so much different down there. So we'll determine that.
(16:49):
We'll start determining that on Saturday to see whether where
he is where he is. But other than those mechanics,
I don't know that it's going to be two different
But you're right a good point about the play calling.
They're not going to show anything. Yeah, they're not going
to show the three type. If I saw four tight
ends on the field yesterday, three of them split out wide,
and I mean Eric Salbert, a tenth year career special

teams guy, was split out wide as a flanker. They're
gonna have a lot of tight end motion. Y're gonna
see much of that at all in the preseason. I
wouldn't think we'll see. It's also a good point to
say if Florie's never done this before, the only time
he's been a coordinator at any level was twenty years
ago at Sacred Hearty University in Connecticut, and that was
on defense. So they did a little bit of a
(17:35):
dice roll here to take a Super Bowl winning offense
and hand it over to someone who's never done this before.
This may take a few weeks into the season for
him to get comfortable.
Speaker 1 (17:45):
All right, What else? What else we got in that
notebook that we want to share that I haven't asked well?
Speaker 5 (17:52):
Jackson Smith and jigbit every day is just I mean,
yesterday he had a one handy catch by spinning around
he had. I had a sixty fifty seven yard touchdown
when he went on an outside release on Devin Witherspoon
and stayed away from the jam and just used his
body leveraged to stay outside a perfect throw from Sam Donald.
(18:13):
He had another really savvy play in the middle of
his zone coveries where instead of just taking his route
where it looked like he was intended to go, he
just stopped between the safety and the corner back and
it was an easy twenty five yard catch because he
just found the spot and Darnald knew he was going
to do it instead of continuing his break. Just the savviness,
the body control. He looks like he's so different assertiveness
(18:38):
wise in this offense compared to this time last year
when they had just traded DK Metcalf, So that impressiveness continues.
Jake Bobo came back to practice. You mentioned Julian Neal
coming back to practice yesterday, the first time they've practiced
in two weeks. They only did individual drills. They haven't
yet gotten back to full go eleven on eleven. Those
are two guys they probably would play, but not play
(19:00):
because of the injury situation. Saturday night and then The
other thing to remember about this preseason game Saturday, it
is going to be non starters. It's gonna be the
reserves and guys trying to make the roster spots. The
only real time, and so far in the three years
i've covered Mike McDonald, the only real time the starters
do anything of substance during the preseason is that joint practice.
(19:22):
That's why McDonald has it. And the joint practice, all
of a sudden is next week, next Friday, about ten
days from now in Nashville. That'll be one of the
good ones versus ones, and that probably will be the
only time the starters do much this preseason.

and we talked a lot about not just his rehabilitation
twelve months ago blown at his knee. He's a brand
new father. He had maybe two months ago. He married
his college sweetheart. He was a really good story about
how he met his college sweetheart at the University of Mississippi.
And clear from him at eleven o'clock and we'll talk

about this Terry On Arnold case because it is not
a Mike McDonald interest. It is counter to what we've
come to know in the culture, right I agree?

We do have a nine game road trip coming up,
and it is a tall task for a team seven
games under five hundred that has not figured out a
way to play consistently well all season long. And so,
as I mentioned yesterday, I do believe I find myself
on the side of the fence that says I don't
think it's going to happen. Doesn't mean that it won't,

doesn't mean that I'm giving up hope. It just feels
like this team doesn't have the ability to play good
baseball for an extended period of time, maybe for a series,
maybe for four games, but it's going to take more
than that to erase this deficit, which grew larger by
the way last night both the Astros and the Rangers
(21:52):
won last night. And I would also point this out
just quickly, American League West has two teams with winning records,
the nationally centralized two teams with winning records. Yeah, just
with all of you that panic about that stuff anyway,
So you know, the task just got larger. And yet
(22:14):
as you get ready to take all in the New
York Yankees for three games, the Astros for three games,
and the Milwaukee Brewers for three games, three teams with
winning records. Right now, we're kind of falling back on
this idea. Does it really matter with the Mariners? Do
they play to their competition? I mean, it feels like
it doesn't matter if you feel like they mountains too
(22:36):
tall to climb sometimes. I think historically recent history, they
tend to play better, it seems, against when the when
the chips are stacked most against them. That's the way
that it's felt here in recent years. I don't know
if it applies to this season. So I just spent
a little bit of time in the break, and you'll
have to forgive me because I'm going to have to

take off my socks and count with my toes here
against winning records, teams with winning records one two, three, four, seven, nine, eleven, twelve, sixteen,
seventeen wins losses five seven, nine, eleven, fourteen, seventeen, eighteen,
nineteen twenty. No, it's more than that five seven, nine, eleven, fourteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen,

twenty two, twenty five, twenty seven, seventeen, and twenty seven.
So it doesn't hold water. We don't. We haven't played
better against teams with winning records this year. We're seventeen
and twenty seven. So it's a nice theory, and I
do think it has applied in the past, but that
the truth of the matter is this team has not
been that team this year. So whatever happens over the

course of the next nine days, Ashley has got to
be a complete turnaround, a complete flip of the switch.
Something has to get this team going. Obviously, a clutch
home runs not going to do it, or a dramatic
four to two win over the Tigers, or a near
bench clearing brawl. None of those things are going to

do it simply. But this team has to start playing
good baseball tonight and then they have to keep playing
it for the large percentage of the remaining games of
the schedule. We have seen no evidence that that can
happen with this baseball team. The only thing that we
can hold onto, and that I'm holding on to, is

I know they have the talent to do it, and
boy are they do. For a streak, almost every team
in baseball has at least a seven to ten games streak,
no matter how bad you are.

We didn't have one to eight.

Back in the day, remember that it didn't see we
were all like, how's this happening?

But that's how the crazy the season has been because
it didn't even feel like we deserved it.

which means he can be claimed off of waivers. Paul Seawald,
of course, had a nice run here with the Seattle Mariners,
was our closer for a stretch of time and has
had some success since he left with the Arizona Diamondbacks
just this year, twenty four saves this year for the
Arizona Diamondbacks. And yet, yeah, yesterday he was released by

the Diamondbacks. And he's not some spring chicken. He is
thirty six years old, for goodness sake, and he has
a six point two to three ERA. So the Diamondbacks,
a team that is in the playoff in playoff position
right now, did not have a role for Seawald. He
has been struggling even more as of late, and they
let him go. So would I sign him? Yes, I

think that the organization should. With the relief pitching woes

necessarily pitching against the Yankees, who are gonna throw eight
left handed hitters at us in the starting lineup for
the next three days. But maybe by the time we
face the Houston Astros, I think I'd like to have
Paul Seewald on this roster.

opening for me, especially somebody that's been hard on JP

but that's a winning record, not just a winning record,
that's a playoff record in the American League this year
and twelve and twenty four without him.

I mean, the player I see does not make that

leadership is so much more valuable when he's in the
lineup than when he's in the dugout that you would

little hard on JP this year, I think my reasons
are warranted. But it's not like cold Emerson's light in
the world on fire. I think Cold Emerson's gonna be
fabulous for this organization and he definitely gives us more
range at shortstop, but he's not hitting better than what

JP was hitting, and he's watching a few of the
routine plays at shortstop as well, So I think maybe, yeah,
when's JP get back? And I don't think that it
crushes Colt Emerson's spirit to have JP go back to
shortstop and Colt's coming off the bench. I don't know
if we have sent him down to Ta Coma or

if you have a rotation like Ryan Heay suggested at
one point between Donovan, Colt and JP at shortstop and
third It doesn't make sense to me that he would
be worth two hundred winning percentage points just by being
on the field, especially the way he's played this year.
But my goodness, I'm not gonna stare at those statistics

and ignore them. Let's get JP back in the damn
lineup for goodness.

example because I came to work today and I wasn't
in a terribly foul mood. I was excited about being
back in the studio. And there have been times where

going to be angry with him. I mean, they could
be just driving perfectly reasonably in the right appropriate lane,

but if it's stopping me from getting where I want
to go, I'm angry. That's just grumpy right.

There, Like the semi truck I was behind today. You're
doing your job. I understand you're supposed to be slower,
but why do I have to go twenty two miles
an hour behind you?

So I show up to work actually in a good mood,
looking forward to seeing Ashley, looking forward to doing the
show in the studio. We got a lot of good
topics and introducing magic Mirror today. We got all this
stuff going on, and I get in the elevator with
someone I've never seen before, and he's a younger man,
so we didn't even have this excuse to use in
his back pocket of being older, and he was number one,

irritated that I was.
Speaker 2 (35:02):
There, Oh, how dare you be in an elevator number two?
Speaker 1 (35:07):
He pressed the button and it was like, that's my elevator.
He kind of carried that, and then he literally made
a noise and shook his head when he saw that
I pressed four because he wanted to go to two,
not that that was going to stop him from where
he was going. He stopped first, but he was annoyed

that I had pressed the button. And I wasn't even
angry with this younger man. He wasn't a young man,
but he was younger than I was. I wasn't even angry,
you know why. I just chalked it up to man,
it's not just me. This is actually a good moment
for me. I thought I was just becoming grumpier. I
think the whole world has become grumpier because there is

no reason why this person should be this angry over
those little trifling things, and yet he is, and he
just made my day.

Grumpy, younger man, it's not just a ub A lot
of people, not me.

I think everybody's grumpier these days.

I would agree, And I think it's because everything's more
expensive and everybody's in more of a hurry, and.

It's just like you just end up being more irritated
in life than you were. It sounds like time is precious,
but everyone's in a hurry, and then you're just you know,
go go, go, go, going all the time, and we
don't have as much time anymore to just sit and
smell the roses.

This guy seemed to I mean his behavior, and I
don't think I was reading into it because I was
in a perfectly good mood. I was not in a
foul mood. He was in a foul mood, but his
behavior was suggesting like it is so early, I'm tired.
Why am I in here? Why is there another human
being awake? Yeah? Right now? Why on earth is he

riding my elevator? And why is he making me feel
like I'm stopping him from getting to his floor on time?

Yeah, he shouldn't push us floor till after I get out.

Right, don't make me feel like I'm delaying you. Yeah,
I'm angry. Yeah, so, I I know like I already
had a little bit of an edge to me, as
you might have told over the ears, already had a
little edge to me. But I know that like COVID
made me grumpier because COVID made me like view the

world through the eyes of a sick person, as I
live with someone who's not altogether well in a lot
of different ways, but she's not well. So I had
to like people that now sneeze without covering their mouth
or cough without company, that now bothers me or I
don't think that it did before.

I think that bothers a lot more people than it
used to.
Speaker 1 (37:46):
COVID. Yeah, I think COVID did that to us. So
that's just one example. Driving, I don't know. I think
I'm just gonna be angry at everybody on the road
except myself, and I'm probably making a lot of mistakes
that are making others angry. I think I'm perfect as
a driver, but I don't know. I can't get rid
of that grumpy bug. But man, when you get done

driving and then you get into work and you got
a guy that got angry with you three times on
an elevator that you don't even know, it dawns on you.
It's not just me. Yes, everybody is a grumpy son.

Of a You know, what do you ever do the
thing where you leave work and you go to the
grocery store or you go to get something and the
place is crowded, and you're.

Like, do these people not have to work? Why are
you all here? Like, I know I have weird hours.

A thousand percent get jobs? And the amount of times
that I get grumpy and I don't say anything, I

certainly don't do anything. Yeah, But the amount of times
I get frustrated with little old women. Do you know
how many times that I have to like, your mom
is probably frustrating somebody else right now in a store somewhere,

sweet little old woman for being on the wrong side
of the aisle or in front of the peanuts, or

walk away, like, would you stop getting angry at little

Check you missus third straight practice yesterday, upper leg soreness,
this kind of tongue in cheek, Mike McDonald said Saturday.
There's no reason in August the fifteenth to push something
like that and make it a month long thing instead
of a couple of days or so, but we'll see

how if he comes back to practice at all the
next couple of days. They I looked down at one
point during practice yesterday at my roster and looked up
at the running backs, and it's san It's George Allani,
Emmanuel Wilson, and a bunch of guys that have never
played an NFL game, including guys they just signed. A
fullback they just signed last week, a two hundred and

thirty five pounds running back they just signed last week. TJ.
Harden is there. It's going to be a pote pirie
of guys during the preseason games that haven't played NFL before.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Is there maybe a dark horse in all of this?
I mean, if ever there was a camp for somebody
buried on the depth chart to sort of turn heads,
I would think this is it at the running back
position here in Seattle. Is there a dark horse making
a move at all?
Speaker 5 (07:03):
Well, it was Jacartia Wright and then he injured his
lower look take an ankle or lower leg last week
and hasn't practiced since. He's missed the last four or
five practices. Velis Jones, who was on the practice squad
last year, was in fact elevated for the Super Bowl,
was on the field in uniform, didn't play. He's still here.
(07:24):
They converted him to wide receiver to begin camp, but
then when the injuries piled up at running back, they
put him back at running back. He's been getting time
a little bit with the ones. They're so thin. We
mentioned Emmanuel Wilson yesterday from green Bay to seven yard
back from green Bay that signed a one year deal.
He's moved up in prominence with Price out. He's getting
time with the ones. McDonald says he likes how he's
(07:45):
the physicality back that they really don't have. Otherwise, they
signed this TJ. Harden who's two hundred and thirty five
pounds that we've yet to see him do too much
because he just got here. But Wilson has been the
ben a benefactor and he's now become a short yardage back,
powerback option that probably they weren't thinking about when they

were going through Jenarian Price and George Hollaney as their
options at back.

Terry and Arnold seems to be the juicy topic right

now surrounding the organization. Mike McDonald addressed it yesterday. What
did we hear from the head coach?
Speaker 5 (08:38):
I was surprised Chuck how expansive he was when I
asked him. I thought he'd say, we look at everything,
we're in on everything, we'll see, but he did. He
said that we had a tryout, which is more than
originally reported. The original port was that he had a
second visit with the Seahawks. Well, in fact, they had
him on the field working out, and McDonald said it
was a really good tryout, said that I enjoyed meeting him,
(09:02):
getting to know him a little bit, called him by
name Terry on referenced to Terrion. There is some familiarity there,
he mentioned, and was asked about Carl Scott. We talked yesterday,
the Seahawks defensive back. I think we talked about that.
Recruited him Arnold to Alabama out of high school in Tallahassee,
(09:22):
Florida in twenty nineteen and twenty the last years that
Scott was at Alabama. Then he left, Scott did to
be the Minnesota Vikings defensive backs coach, and so he
never coached Arnold at Alabama into becoming a first round
draft pick. But he knows him. He's been in his
living room, his family and in Tallahassee, so he knows
him better than anybody else in Seahawks do, and they've
(09:45):
talked to him as well. McDonald also said that those
they've talked to that are in Arnold's corner have given
the Seahawks a lot of information and those are people
that the Seahawks really trust. So this summation of all
of this is there. Like we said yesterday, they're trying
to be the first in line if Arnold's exonerated from
(10:06):
all of this, and that's a big if he's got
an arraignment hearing this week in Tampa where he enter
a plea most likely not guilty, so we can remain
free and do these shopping visits to teams. There's some
conflicting reports whether the visit with the Saints you mentioned
was yesterday or today or what have you, but it's
(10:27):
supposed to be this week. The Houston Texans New York
Jets have inquired, according to his agent, Nicole nn and
she's trying to get a market for him. And it's
a really odd situation to try to drum up a
market for a guy who could be facing life in prison.
I asked MacDonald if the Seahawks, in their investigation of
Arnold's case, have gotten any read on whether there is
(10:50):
a possibility that he would be able to play the
entire season if everything went his way in this and
he said, we're still working through that. We don't know
that for sure, but they're trying to be of the line,
be the team that's met with him the most, that
he likes the most in case he gets exonerated, and
if he does, I would think, Chuck that he's not
going to command much more than maybe a one year,
(11:13):
near minimum salary contract. He's still only twenty three years old,
which is why, as we said yesterday, the football always wins.
We'll see what happens with his case, but the Seahawks
want to be there.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
Well, that was gonna be my next question. Is this
just a case of telling always wins, or can we
just cling to the idea that maybe this story and
they've already learned this is not nearly as bad as
it reads.
Speaker 5 (11:38):
Well, that's the inference from McDonald. He's said that they
have heard Arnold's side of the story. The inference man
the fact that we're still interested means we like what
we hear from that side of the story. Okay, And
as we said, that makes the Seahawks. It has to
make the Seahawks think he's going to be exonerated, or
else they wouldn't be going this far down the path.
(11:58):
It's one thing to kick the tires in for a
free agent visit. It's another to have him in again
and have him in a tryout. I mean, let's say it,
it's not very convenient for anybody to fly out to
Seattle unless it's something that's decently possible. And now he's
been here twice. So we asked him about the culture
and what McDonald has created and is the fear of
(12:21):
protecting that in this case, and he said, we're still
working through that. So they just want to put their
lot in. They want to make sure that they're at
the front of the line. If he gets exonerated because
then anyone can sign them, of course, and then it
would be a frenzy. And the Seahawks want to say, Hey, remember.
Speaker 1 (12:38):

wrote about him over the weekend. I heard you do
a segment on him yesterday with Jess, so obviously he's

That is one good looking athlete, and you know he's

they picked used to pick him. You got Bud Clark
there as well. I mean, I would imagine that this
thing's getting overcrowded, that that secondary room, where who might
it squeeze out when this process comes to an end.

Well, Noah had been Agay. The eighth year veteran Corda
was playing nickel first team Nicol yesterday. Bud Clark has
taken some of the Anthony Bell's reps as the big
nickel demon worry type hybrid in the first team defense.
In the last week or so, Bell's actually lost some ground,
even though he had to return for interception for a

touchdown off of Jalen Milroe yesterday and a big to
do and ran the link to the field and defense
and celebrate with him all that neim I preach. It
is someone that they started with as the fifth cornerback
to begin training camp. He looked like the heir to
Wreak Woolen in the alternating of three starters and two
spots between Woolen, Job and Witherspoon. Last year, Wells Pritchett
(14:25):
was in that starter camp. But now Evenogamy's been doing
that more Pritchett less, and the fact that they are
entertaining the possibility of adding Terry on Arnold tells me
they're not happy with Pritchett. They didn't say that. McDonald
said he loves that, and he loves Pritchett. He loves
the competition there but they're always shopping. They always want

to be shopping, and if they're trying to they must
not be set, and they aren't because they have a
veteran challenging Pritchett as well. Innogamy McDonald says he really
tries Bustin loves the cornerbacks that he has, but they're
still shopping, which tells me there's still ways to go there.
We'll see if Pritchett ends up getting job, if nothing happens,

or if they don't sign on Arnold, that's probably where
they would land. But Ignongi, I think, is gonna make
the team for special teams and the veteran presence they
need back there.

This is something that I'm sure you're gonna cover later
in the week, so I'm probably caught catching you off
guard with it a little bit. But just from a
person that's covered football for a long time and have
seen offensive coordinators get introduced, Brian flur has never called
plays before. He's gonna get his opportunity this Saturday, and

yet he's gonna be up against you can only call
a certain small percentage of the playbook. He's not gonna
want to expose too much, So how how will do
you think that will work? How much or how much
is Mike gonna let Brian flurry, uh, you know, not
exposed too much of the playbook, but also let him

start getting used to calling plays before the games actually count.

Not much, and I think I mean the practices. It's
not in a game obviously, but they use the walkie talkies.
It goes into the quarterbacks ear in the ear piece,
microph or speaker, So he's doing the mechanics of the
play calling. Now there is a difference. If we don't
know this yet. I haven't asked him if he's going
to be up in the press box or on the sidelines.

But if he's on in the press box, that's a
different deal. Kobiek was on the field. A lot of
coordinators these days want to be on the field because
they want to be able to reach out of touch
and talk to them face to face with their quarterbacks,
and the emotions of in the feel of the game
is so much different down there. So we'll determine that.

We'll start determining that on Saturday to see whether where
he is where he is. But other than those mechanics,
I don't know that it's going to be two different
But you're right a good point about the play calling.
They're not going to show anything. Yeah, they're not going
to show the three type. If I saw four tight
ends on the field yesterday, three of them split out wide,
and I mean Eric Salbert, a tenth year career special

teams guy, was split out wide as a flanker. They're
gonna have a lot of tight end motion. Y're gonna
see much of that at all in the preseason. I
wouldn't think we'll see. It's also a good point to
say if Florie's never done this before, the only time
he's been a coordinator at any level was twenty years
ago at Sacred Hearty University in Connecticut, and that was
on defense. So they did a little bit of a

dice roll here to take a Super Bowl winning offense
and hand it over to someone who's never done this before.
This may take a few weeks into the season for
him to get comfortable.

Jackson Smith and jigbit every day is just I mean,
yesterday he had a one handy catch by spinning around
he had. I had a sixty fifty seven yard touchdown
when he went on an outside release on Devin Witherspoon
and stayed away from the jam and just used his
body leveraged to stay outside a perfect throw from Sam Donald.

He had another really savvy play in the middle of
his zone coveries where instead of just taking his route
where it looked like he was intended to go, he
just stopped between the safety and the corner back and
it was an easy twenty five yard catch because he
just found the spot and Darnald knew he was going
to do it instead of continuing his break. Just the savviness,
the body control. He looks like he's so different assertiveness

wise in this offense compared to this time last year
when they had just traded DK Metcalf, So that impressiveness continues.
Jake Bobo came back to practice. You mentioned Julian Neal
coming back to practice yesterday, the first time they've practiced
in two weeks. They only did individual drills. They haven't
yet gotten back to full go eleven on eleven. Those
are two guys they probably would play, but not play

because of the injury situation. Saturday night and then The
other thing to remember about this preseason game Saturday, it
is going to be non starters. It's gonna be the
reserves and guys trying to make the roster spots. The
only real time, and so far in the three years
i've covered Mike McDonald, the only real time the starters
do anything of substance during the preseason is that joint practice.

That's why McDonald has it. And the joint practice, all
of a sudden is next week, next Friday, about ten
days from now in Nashville. That'll be one of the
good ones versus ones, and that probably will be the
only time the starters do much this preseason.

way to play consistently well all season long. And so,
as I mentioned yesterday, I do believe I find myself
on the side of the fence that says I don't
think it's going to happen. Doesn't mean that it won't,

doesn't mean that I'm giving up hope. It just feels
like this team doesn't have the ability to play good
baseball for an extended period of time, maybe for a series,
maybe for four games, but it's going to take more
than that to erase this deficit, which grew larger by
the way last night both the Astros and the Rangers

won last night. And I would also point this out
just quickly, American League West has two teams with winning records,
the nationally centralized two teams with winning records. Yeah, just
with all of you that panic about that stuff anyway,
So you know, the task just got larger. And yet

as you get ready to take all in the New
York Yankees for three games, the Astros for three games,
and the Milwaukee Brewers for three games, three teams with
winning records. Right now, we're kind of falling back on
this idea. Does it really matter with the Mariners? Do
they play to their competition? I mean, it feels like
it doesn't matter if you feel like they mountains too

tall to climb sometimes. I think historically recent history, they
tend to play better, it seems, against when the when
the chips are stacked most against them. That's the way
that it's felt here in recent years. I don't know
if it applies to this season. So I just spent
a little bit of time in the break, and you'll
have to forgive me because I'm going to have to

take off my socks and count with my toes here
against winning records, teams with winning records one two, three, four, seven, nine, eleven, twelve, sixteen,
seventeen wins losses five seven, nine, eleven, fourteen, seventeen, eighteen,

So it doesn't hold water. We don't. We haven't played
better against teams with winning records this year. We're seventeen
and twenty seven. So it's a nice theory, and I
do think it has applied in the past, but that
the truth of the matter is this team has not
been that team this year. So whatever happens over the

course of the next nine days, Ashley has got to
be a complete turnaround, a complete flip of the switch.
Something has to get this team going. Obviously, a clutch
home runs not going to do it, or a dramatic
four to two win over the Tigers, or a near
bench clearing brawl. None of those things are going to

do it simply. But this team has to start playing
good baseball tonight and then they have to keep playing
it for the large percentage of the remaining games of
the schedule. We have seen no evidence that that can
happen with this baseball team. The only thing that we
can hold onto, and that I'm holding on to, is

I know they have the talent to do it, and
boy are they do. For a streak, almost every team
in baseball has at least a seven to ten games streak,
no matter how bad you are.

Back in the day, remember that it didn't see we

which means he can be claimed off of waivers. Paul Seawald,
of course, had a nice run here with the Seattle Mariners,
was our closer for a stretch of time and has
had some success since he left with the Arizona Diamondbacks
just this year, twenty four saves this year for the
Arizona Diamondbacks. And yet, yeah, yesterday he was released by

the Diamondbacks. And he's not some spring chicken. He is
thirty six years old, for goodness sake, and he has
a six point two to three ERA. So the Diamondbacks,
a team that is in the playoff in playoff position
right now, did not have a role for Seawald. He
has been struggling even more as of late, and they
let him go. So would I sign him? Yes, I

think that the organization should. With the relief pitching woes
that have popped up here recently, Bizardo and Ferreer particularly,
We're going to get Gabe spyerback starting tonight, but let's
add Seawald. I mean, let's add him now. He was
someone that thought his career was shipwrecked until he met

Pete Woodworth, And at first thought Pete Woodworth was the
biggest dope on the planet. What do you mean you
want me to keep throwing in this one location with
my worst pitch. The data shows that that's where you're
most effective. And I don't think you should throw anything else.

goes off and has a successful run with us. So

Pete Woodworth is Paul Sewald's whisperer, and so yeah, I
mean we're at the point for desperation at this point.
And frankly, the numbers with Paul Seawald, he's been terrible
against lefties. He still has great numbers against right handers

base against slugging three eighty seven and under six hundred

ops against right handers. Yeah, maybe we don't want him
necessarily pitching against the Yankees, who are gonna throw eight
left handed hitters at us in the starting lineup for
the next three days. But maybe by the time we
face the Houston Astros, I think I'd like to have
Paul Seewald on this roster.

Davis is his name, and he sent out on Twitter
this statistic, which I did not realize. This was eye
opening for me, especially somebody that's been hard on JP
this year. The Mariners with JP Crawford and the lineup

but that's a winning record, not just a winning record,
that's a playoff record in the American League this year

leadership is so much more valuable when he's in the

are warranted. But it's not like cold Emerson's light in
the world on fire. I think Cold Emerson's gonna be
fabulous for this organization and he definitely gives us more
range at shortstop, but he's not hitting better than what

JP was hitting, and he's watching a few of the
routine plays at shortstop as well, So I think maybe, yeah,
when's JP get back? And I don't think that it
crushes Colt Emerson's spirit to have JP go back to
shortstop and Colt's coming off the bench. I don't know
if we have sent him down to Ta Coma or

if you have a rotation like Ryan Heay suggested at
one point between Donovan, Colt and JP at shortstop and
third It doesn't make sense to me that he would
be worth two hundred winning percentage points just by being
on the field, especially the way he's played this year.

and ignore them. Let's get JP back in the damn
lineup for goodness.

am convinced people are just grumpier just across the board.

example because I came to work today and I wasn't
in a terribly foul mood. I was excited about being
back in the studio. And there have been times where
it doesn't matter what somebody does on the road, I'm
going to be angry with him. I mean, they could
be just driving perfectly reasonably in the right appropriate lane,

but if it's stopping me from getting where I want
to go, I'm angry. That's just grumpy right.

There, Like the semi truck I was behind today. You're
doing your job. I understand you're supposed to be slower,
but why do I have to go twenty two miles
an hour behind you?

So I show up to work actually in a good mood,
looking forward to seeing Ashley, looking forward to doing the
show in the studio. We got a lot of good
topics and introducing magic Mirror today. We got all this
stuff going on, and I get in the elevator with
someone I've never seen before, and he's a younger man,
so we didn't even have this excuse to use in
his back pocket of being older, and he was number one,

irritated that I was.

There, Oh, how dare you be in an elevator number two?
Speaker 1 (35:07):
He pressed the button and it was like, that's my elevator.
He kind of carried that, and then he literally made
a noise and shook his head when he saw that
I pressed four because he wanted to go to two,
not that that was going to stop him from where
he was going. He stopped first, but he was annoyed

that I had pressed the button. And I wasn't even
angry with this younger man. He wasn't a young man,
but he was younger than I was. I wasn't even angry,
you know why. I just chalked it up to man,
it's not just me. This is actually a good moment
for me. I thought I was just becoming grumpier. I
think the whole world has become grumpier because there is

no reason why this person should be this angry over
those little trifling things, and yet he is, and he
just made my day.

Grumpy, younger man, it's not just a ub A lot
of people, not me.

I think everybody's grumpier these days.

I would agree, And I think it's because everything's more
expensive and everybody's in more of a hurry, and.

It's just like you just end up being more irritated
in life than you were. It sounds like time is precious,
but everyone's in a hurry, and then you're just you know,
go go, go, go, going all the time, and we
don't have as much time anymore to just sit and
smell the roses.

This guy seemed to I mean his behavior, and I
don't think I was reading into it because I was
in a perfectly good mood. I was not in a
foul mood. He was in a foul mood, but his
behavior was suggesting like it is so early, I'm tired.
Why am I in here? Why is there another human
being awake? Yeah? Right now? Why on earth is he

riding my elevator? And why is he making me feel
like I'm stopping him from getting to his floor on time?
F that guy?

Yeah, he shouldn't push us floor till after I get out.

Right, don't make me feel like I'm delaying you. Yeah,
I'm angry. Yeah, so, I I know like I already
had a little bit of an edge to me, as
you might have told over the ears, already had a
little edge to me. But I know that like COVID
made me grumpier because COVID made me like view the

world through the eyes of a sick person, as I
live with someone who's not altogether well in a lot
of different ways, but she's not well. So I had
to like people that now sneeze without covering their mouth
or cough without company, that now bothers me or I
don't think that it did before.

I think that bothers a lot more people than it
used to.
Speaker 1 (37:46):
COVID. Yeah, I think COVID did that to us. So
that's just one example. Driving, I don't know. I think
I'm just gonna be angry at everybody on the road
except myself, and I'm probably making a lot of mistakes
that are making others angry. I think I'm perfect as
a driver, but I don't know. I can't get rid
of that grumpy bug. But man, when you get done

driving and then you get into work and you got
a guy that got angry with you three times on
an elevator that you don't even know, it dawns on you.
It's not just me. Yes, everybody is a grumpy son.

Of a You know, what do you ever do the
thing where you leave work and you go to the
grocery store or you go to get something and the
place is crowded, and you're.

Like, do these people not have to work? Why are
you all here? Like, I know I have weird hours.
How is it that you all have weird hours?

A thousand percent get jobs? And the amount of times
that I get grumpy and I don't say anything, I
just want you know, I don't say anything, and I
certainly don't do anything. Yeah, But the amount of times
I get frustrated with little old women. Do you know
how many times that I have to like, your mom
is probably frustrating somebody else right now in a store somewhere,

are on the road somewhere. But the amount of times
in a grocery store that I am angry at a
sweet little old woman for being on the wrong side
of the aisle or in front of the peanuts, or
whatever the case might.

Be, and having no clue anyone else is there.

I really got to check myself out. I have to
walk away, like, would you stop getting angry at little
old women? And then thirteen seconds later I'll be angry
with another little old woman.

to remember, well you, I myself get grumpy at things
