Speaker 1 (00:25):
Oh, happy Football Friday to you all. Yes, it is
a Football Friday brought to you by Washington's Beef Farmers
and Ranchers. Beef, it's what's for dinner.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
That's what they tell me.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Welcome in to this Football Friday. It's our first official
Football Friday of the year. But we do have some
other stuff going on. And we're going to go through
it in the Ocho because the Friday Ocho is a
big part of Football Friday. And so we get to
your eight top stories of the day heading into the weekend.
And we shall begin with, of course, football here on
(00:58):
our soil. It's all about our quarterback situation. That's the
story we're pouring over and over and over and over.
Sam Darnold, of course, left game number one. Five plays
into his season with a hip injury. we feared the
worst at one point, or at least most of us did,
(01:18):
and now the Seahawks are trying to make us feel
better about things. Mike McDonald provided a bit of an
update yesterday on Sam's condition. No update, honestly, from earlier.
Speaker 4 (01:31):
But it's been positive news, so right now I think
we're just working through the extent of the injury and
then putting a plan in place to get back rocking
and rolling. So It is silver lining as we have
some extra time here. We'll kind of get things back
up and running on Monday, actual Monday, calendar Monday, not
(01:54):
football Monday. So hopefully by then we'll have a really
accurate picture of plan of attack and what we'll do
that week.
Speaker 5 (02:01):
Is he back in the building now?
Speaker 1 (02:03):
He was back today, yeah.
Speaker 5 (02:04):
Have you talked to him to gauge the mean or
just kind of how he's doing?
Speaker 4 (02:08):
We've texted back and forth, but I haven't seen him,
but I know he's here right now.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
Just to confirm what you said on the radio, you
said it's a muscle thing?
Speaker 2 (02:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
I'd tell you more, but I don't know more. It's
around here. It's around the hip. I don't think there's
a hip muscle, but there is there.
Speaker 5 (02:26):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
I think he knows more. I think he knows everything.
Speaker 5 (02:30):
And I think that makes me think that it's not
as bad because he doesn't seem, he's just like, yeah,
we're just figuring out a plan.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
We'll be fine.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
Or is it worse?
Speaker 2 (02:40):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
I don't get that impression.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
Well, he didn't seem happy telling us the good news.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Great news.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
He didn't sound happy about reporting it.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
I'm trying not to read into it too much because
that's really just careless or reckless when you're talking about injuries.
Speaker 5 (02:58):
Yeah, he was a little goofy, though, because when he
says calendar Monday, not football Monday, then I cut it
out because then he said, well, I guess it is
football Monday and calendar Monday. Either way, we're going to
be here. And then he talks about the hip thing.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
So I don't know. He was being a little goofy,
which makes me think he's not taking it too hard.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Okay. Well, we don't know a lot. Sounds like Coach
McDonald doesn't know a lot either. But the expectation is
that Darnold will miss this week's game against the Arizona Cardinals.
My best guess is that he's going to miss more
time than that. It would be reckless to speculate how
many games he would miss beyond that. But I'm going
(03:37):
to do it anyway. I'm going to say that if
you can hold out with Drew Locke, I think he
can beat the Commanders. I think he can beat the
Cardinals this week as well. And then I think maybe
he's back by week four. That gives him almost a
full month because that The game played on the 9th,
and you don't play the Chargers until the 4th of
(03:58):
next month. So that's what I'm circling right now. I'd
feel good about that if that's how much time he's
going to miss. But there is part of me that's
wondering if this is a— even though it's not the worst
thing that could have happened, like it's not career-ending or season-ending—
There's still part of me that thinks that maybe he's
going to miss some significant time.
Speaker 5 (04:20):
And if he does, yeah, our schedule is in our
favor right now. I mean, if we had the 49ers
scheduled for next week, I'd be a lot more worried.
So I think I trust Drew to get the job done.
And I think, honestly, with this defense, he doesn't have
to do a lot, which is the nice thing. We're
not asking Drew to put up 40 points.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Yeah, no doubt about it. So, what can we do
with Drew Locke? Hugh Millen was on with us yesterday,
Monday morning, quarterbacking and the such. And he talked about
what the next few weeks could bring. You're going to
win more with Sam Darnold, there's no question. Absolutely. In fact,
you're going to win probably a significant amount more. Because
(05:02):
Sam Darnold's better. But, can you beat the Cardinals?
Speaker 6 (05:06):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
Can you go on the road and beat the Commanders?
Speaker 2 (05:09):
Yes. Yes.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
So I think that they're feeling okay about it. Yeah,
that's about where it sits right now, I guess, to
feel okay about it. I mean, I think even if
he does miss some significant time, I think Drew Locke's
a good enough quarterback, good enough backup quarterback, who definitely
has more upside. This is not like some 35-year-old. This
(05:33):
guy's still in his 20s, and he's been a starter
in the league before. I think that you can be
a playoff team with Drew Locke.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
I do.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
Even if he has to take over for the rest
of the season, I think you can be a playoff team,
may be able to pull off an upset in the playoffs.
But I kind of echo what Dick said in our
last segment. You're not going to win as many games
with him as you would with Sam Darnold. And you
might not be able to afford to lose those extra
(06:02):
couple of games that Sam Darnold may have won for you.
because of the division that you're playing in, and because
of this team's history of being dependent upon home field
advantage in the playoffs to win the whole thing. So
I think you can be a playoff. If Drew Locke's
our quarterback for the rest of the year, I think
we make the playoffs at 11-6 as a wild card,
(06:23):
but I don't think we win the Super Bowl unless
Sam Darnold is our quarterback. That's how I feel.
Speaker 5 (06:29):
Yeah, and I don't think that's a knock on Drew
Locke because he is a viable backup.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
He is good at the job he has.
Speaker 5 (06:37):
But I just think, yeah, if you can't recognize there's
a difference between someone who's a backup and someone.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
Who's a starter, then you've got your head in the sand.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
Yeah, and Locke's had his opportunities to be a starter,
and he hasn't seized it. I mean, when Sam Darnold
got his chance to be a starter again, given back
to him after he lost the right to be a starter.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
And then he was given the opportunity to save it.
What did he do? He flourished with the Minnesota Vikings,
turned it into a big contract with the Seahawks, won
a Super Bowl, and now he's got to be talked
about as one of the better quarterbacks in the National
Football League, the type of guy that can win you
a Super Bowl, obviously. Drew's not proven that, and I'm
not sure he is that. But he was good on Wednesday.
(07:21):
Under the circumstances, he was great Wednesday night. 16-22 passes,
187 yards, and a touchdown. And the Hawks have publicly
expressed their belief in Drew Locke as the best backup
quarterback in the National Football League. But I want one
of the best starters. Starting for me in the National
Football League. All right, item number three, Thursday Night Football.
(07:43):
Last night, 49ers took on the Rams down under. It's
a good one. One of my favorite songs.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
I really like the way it starts.
Speaker 5 (07:52):
In order to make it match up to the chorus,
I had to cut a little bit, but I couldn't
cut the beginning because you've got to have the.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
Ding, ding, ding.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
And you also got to hear, at least even in
the background, she took me in and made me breakfast. Yeah, yeah,
you do.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
That's just a great song.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
You do.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
And also, one of the most hilarious results in football history.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
I thought the Rams were going to go undefeated.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
Yeah. Idiots. What happened to all that undefeated talk? One
in a million.
Speaker 5 (08:26):
All of a sudden, you get to Australia where the
toilets go backwards and you can't play football.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
Highlights provided by Wes Wood, one of a 27-7 49ers
shellacking of the Los Angeles Rams. I don't believe a
lot in the 49ers. When healthy, when their stars are healthy,
obviously they're very dangerous. I just don't trust that over
the course of a season, the 49ers stars can stay healthy.
They never do.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
Right.
Speaker 3 (08:49):
And one guy got injured twice yesterday.
Speaker 1 (08:53):
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Rams... I don't think they were
a product of hype. I mean, they certainly were a
product of hype. But obviously there's a lot of substance
to that hype. And I do believe that the Rams
are going to be very good. But I am willing
right now to be wrong about both.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
Yeah, I am willing to say, hey, 49ers are better
than I thought they were going to be again. And
the Rams are nearly as good as what they were
hyped to be. I am happy to be wrong about
both of those preseason predictions. And last night certainly was
an indication that one team's a lot better. Now, what
went into that result? Why did Myles Garrett not make
(09:36):
a single play in the game? He had zero tackles.
Forget sacks.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
Didn't make it on the stat sheet.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
No tackles. Obviously no sacks. Matt Stafford was held 155
passing yards. Didn't even finish the game. They fell behind
three scores, and they put Ty Simpson uh in the
game and so was it was the result last night
are the 49ers just that good are the rams not
nearly as good or was it that strange decision the
(10:05):
rams organization made to arrive in australia late to try
to avoid jet lag setting in And Sean McVay addressed
it afterwards and said that had nothing to do with
the result of this game. If I were Sean McVay,
I would say, we obviously made a mistake when we
(10:26):
chose to fly in, and that had everything to do
with the result of this game, and I'm going to
have a talking to with the nerds that made this
decision for us. Otherwise, you're admitting, we're not very good.
Speaker 2 (10:39):
Right.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
They're a lot better than us. They just beat our
pants off.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
We were not prepared.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
Do you want to make that admission? I stink now.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (10:49):
So I think I would blame it on the decision
to arrive late and my players were tired and caught
flat-footed and played lethargic. I think that actually might make
me feel better about my team's loss.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
I would think so.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
We made a calculated mistake regarding when we should arrive
in Australia and it caused us to play like garbage.
But final score, San Francisco 27-21. Rams seven last night.
And now we get ready for Sunday. I mean, we
still have NFL opening week Sunday ahead of us, which
is one of the best days of the calendar year.
Speaker 3 (11:25):
Ideal.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
If you could only watch one game at a time,
which I know you won't. Buffalo at Houston's the best
early game. I think Green Bay at Minnesota, even though
I don't really believe in the Vikings, is your best
afternoon game. And then, of course, the Sunday night game,
you have no choice. You're going to be watching the
Cowboys and the New York Giants.
Speaker 5 (11:44):
Which I think, if you gave me that last year,
I'd be like, but I think the Giants are going
to be better and the Cowboys are supposed to be better.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
So I think it'll be a good game.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
I'm really curious to see the Giants because I don't
think they're going to be very good. But man, they
sure are getting hyped up too.
Speaker 5 (11:58):
Well, and to be fair, when I say better, I
didn't think they were good at all last year. So
to be better, I just think they're going to be decent.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
They should be better.
Speaker 5 (12:06):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (12:06):
Jackson Dart's second year. Harbaugh's there. They should be better
than they were a year ago. But people are getting
a little carried away with how much better they're going
to be. I agree. All right, let's talk some college football.
I mean, we're only a couple weeks into the season.
But certainly we are going to be treated to the
best matchup so far this year of the young college
(12:27):
football season when number one Ohio State takes on number
four Texas in Austin. Coach Neuheisel was with us on
Tuesday and broke down the matchup.
Speaker 6 (12:37):
Well, both are obviously much more experienced than they were
a year ago at the quarterback position. So I think
it can be more of an offensive game than it
was in the 14-7 game that we watched a year ago.
And both coordinators will feel more comfortable taking more shots
down the field, which will be entertaining to watch. You know,
(12:58):
if you're just judging the statistics and both teams were
wildly impressive over in victories over Ball State and Texas State, respectively.
But if you look at the numbers, it looks to
me like Ohio State has a little bit of a
head start in running the football and defending the run.
Texas gave up more yards than they wanted on the ground.
(13:20):
Will Muschamp, the new defensive coordinator, is not going to
be pleased with that. They'll be better this week, especially
with the excitement of a game against a team like
Ohio State and the magnitude of the contest. But if
I'm leaning right now, even though they're on the road,
I'm going to lean Buckeye.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
He not only leaned that way when we got to
his taco time pick of the week, he took the Buckeyes.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
Yeah, he did.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
He could have taken any game he wanted. He took
the bucket. So he talked himself in to confidence. But
if you want to hear the entire conversation with Coach Neuheisel,
we have him on every Tuesday at 9 o'clock. You
can do so at 933kjar. com. Last year when these two
teams met, a year ago plus a week, 14-7. Very
low scoring affair. Ashley took the under in fact or fiction.
(14:09):
But we'll see if we can put more points on
the board with now experienced quarterbacks in Arch Manning. And
Julian's saying it's going to be a blast. 4.30 kickoff
from Austin. They're expecting 100-degree temperatures in Austin, Texas. Meanwhile,
Michigan and Oklahoma are going to kick off at 9 a.m.
tomorrow morning in Ann Arbor. Wolverines have a lot of
(14:30):
proving to do after their controversial win last week. And
the Seahawks game will take place tomorrow night as well.
Iowa State at Iowa. At 4.30, and that's one of
those very good rivalries. Doesn't get talked about enough about
how great a rivalry that is.
Speaker 3 (14:46):
Although, I'm wondering, Cy Hawk, shouldn't it be Hawk Clone?
Speaker 1 (14:50):
Could be Hawk Clone.
Speaker 3 (14:51):
Hawk Clone, it's like, ooh, watch out, a Hawk Clone's coming.
Speaker 1 (14:54):
I think the people that call it Hawk Clone have
to attend a different party than everybody else.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
Okay, that makes sense.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
I'll go to that party.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
You'll fit right in.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (15:04):
Huskies are going to host Utah State tomorrow at 12.30,
and of course.
When trying to make out the schedule, Pat Chun was
feeling lonely at the time, trying to find the perfect
patsy to have to face in week number two of
the season, and he found something wonderful with the farmers
from Utah State online. Where's Jill?
Speaker 5 (15:26):
She's really lonely and out walking the cornfield again.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
Do you think they will ever find.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
This true love? Not hanging out with us all day.
Speaker 1 (15:37):
We used to be lonely. Until we met on Farmers Only.
FarmersOnly.com is the new online dating site for farmers, ranchers,
and good old country folks.
Speaker 3 (15:46):
You don't have to be lonely at FarmersOnly.com.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
City folks just don't get it. Well, city folk, Pat Chun,
searching for the perfect cupcake to face. I don't think
Utah State's, I mean, they did lose by 12 last
week to Idaho State. But if you're trying to find
a team that you can get prepared for the Big
Ten Conference without risking a loss, you go to FarmersOnly.com.
Speaker 3 (16:15):
And when you're down two running backs, yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
And you find the Utah State Farmers or the Utah
State Aggies, as some know them. Whatever you want to
call them. Or the Utah State Fighting Bobby Wagners, as
I like to call them. Yes. And so that's the
matchup Saturday at 1230 on Mott Lake. Meanwhile, the Cougs
are having to travel to Manhattan, Kansas. to take on
the Wildcats. Kickoff, 9 a.m. tomorrow morning for the Cougs.
(16:40):
Mariners win back-to-back day games against the Texas Rangers, and
all of their offense happened within four batters, and it
proved to be enough. Julio scolds this.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
Left field, take it.
Speaker 5 (16:58):
Flight, gone!
Speaker 1 (16:59):
Flip the script.
Speaker 2 (17:02):
Julio for three minutes.
Speaker 1 (17:05):
Aaron Goldsmith on the call. Mariners TV. Ryan Healy was
in there somewhere. The Mariners were perfectoed by Jacob deGrom,
who I'm watching right now. Five innings, 15 in a row,
set down by Jacob deGrom. They took him out after
the sixth. He had a shutout. He had 12 strikeouts.
(17:25):
The Mariners did not have an answer for Jacob deGrom,
but they had every answer there was. They had the
cheat code against Jacob Junis. We just had to face
the right Jacob.
Speaker 3 (17:33):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (17:34):
And within four batters, a hit by pitch to Randy Rosarino,
a bleeder single through the left side of the infield
by Dom Canzone, a clean single by Cal Raleigh, and
then the three-run homer from Julio Rodriguez. And the Mariners
went from trailing 3-0 and being dominated by Jake DeGrom
to leading 4-3. And then Gabe Spire and Andres Munoz
(17:58):
took them the rest of the way. 4-3 is the
final score in the game. The Mariners do gain a
game on Texas, who they trail, but not on Houston.
Houston won Thursday as well. So Seattle remains six games
back with 15 to play. The team travels to Sacramento.
They will take on the A's tonight. Jeffrey Springs will
(18:19):
pitch for the A's. He's left-handed. George Kirby will pitch
for us. First pitch is at 640. Still alive.
Speaker 2 (18:27):
Yep. Barely.
Speaker 3 (18:27):
Not dead yet.
Speaker 1 (18:29):
Finally, Sounders and Galaxy will meet tomorrow night. Brian Schmetzer
was on with Softie and Fane earlier this week, as
he is every week, and talking about the weather possibly
being a factor in L.A. Yeah, no, I.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
Mean, the heat there is a little different than Austin
because it's a little more humid in the Midwest.
Speaker 1 (18:47):
But, yes, Dick, it is going to be hot.
Speaker 6 (18:50):
The saving grace, perhaps.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
perhaps, is that they've.
Speaker 4 (18:54):
Got to fly up to Vancouver on a midweek, play
Vancouver on a Wednesday, come back home and play us
on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
So let's see how much rotation they do. Let's see
which guys they.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
Leave at home.
Speaker 6 (19:07):
We'll be ready for them because our guys are fired up.
They've got some belief still.
Speaker 1 (19:14):
7.30 is the start of that match in Los Angeles
tomorrow night. Sounders still have not won in forever, but
they have tied or drawed, drawn, drawed. They have played Drew.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
Drew.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
They have Drew.
Speaker 3 (19:32):
Drew.
Speaker 1 (19:32):
They have Drew.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (19:34):
Two straight matches since they added Dayon. So let's try
to get a win. What do you say?
Speaker 2 (19:39):
Dayon.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
Finally, Kraken Camp starts tomorrow. Yes, hockey season is here. Wow.
Probably talk a little bit of Kraken hockey. next week.
Coming up next, though, the ABCs of the M's. I
didn't forget today. Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM. Yes, they're
not dead yet.
Speaker 3 (20:00):
He says he's not dead yet.
Speaker 1 (20:02):
I want to dance and sing. The Mariners are trying
to hold on to their slim chances of getting to
the playoffs. And so we do invest in the ABCs
of the M's. Where are they going to take us today?
We left off with a letter F. F is for fired.
Ken Rosenthal reporting yesterday that Dan Wilson's gone at the
(20:24):
end of the year. It's the only thing. This is
from Ken Rosenthal. The only thing that I can say
with confidence is that Dan Wilson's going to be gone
in Seattle at the end of the year. Otherwise, some
other people that he was speculating about, or at least
the interviewer was speculating about with Ken Rosenthal, he wasn't sure.
(20:44):
The only thing he felt confident about is that Dan
Wilson will not be back next year with this team.
He also mentioned that maybe Tori Lovullo would not be
returning to the Arizona Diamondbacks next season. especially if he
ends up missing the playoffs, which he very well could
there in Arizona. I've been asked by Softie, I think,
(21:05):
five times, who do you think is a candidate to
replace Dan Wilson next season? And I've answered five times.
Torrey Lavello, I think, is somebody of interest. I think
he and Jerry, I'm pretty sure, have a relationship. He
is very well respected. He's also a players' manager, but
I think he's a little firmer than what Dan Wilson is.
(21:28):
So maybe that's, um, maybe that's a guy, but, uh,
it's not looking good for Dan at the end of
the year. And even if you do somehow overcome this deficit,
I mean, I, I, the only way I think Dan
Wilson can save his job, if you go back to
back American league championship series or beyond, then yes, I'll
(21:49):
change my mind on that. Cause it's going to be
really hard despite the disappointment that we've experienced all season
long with this team. be really hard to let him
go after pulling something like that off. Uh, but I
think anything short of that, and he's not going to return,
even if they miraculously track down Houston and make it
into the playoffs. I don't think it's enough. If you
(22:10):
get knocked out in the wild card round and you
just had a season like we've had, and you've fallen
way short of your goals, The goal was not, let's
get to the playoffs and get knocked out in the
first round of the wild card. That was not the goal.
You've fallen way short of your goals. I don't see
anything barring a miraculous run to the World Series saving
(22:33):
Dan at this point.
Speaker 3 (22:34):
No, and I don't either.
Speaker 5 (22:35):
And it's interesting that somebody like Ken Rosenthal is coming
out and saying something as bold because you would think
that it wouldn't get out there since he is a
Mariners legend and so close with the organization.
Speaker 3 (22:46):
But clearly someone's letting it out.
Speaker 5 (22:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (22:48):
G is for Gilbert and George. Can I just say
this now? I mean, I'm not ready to talk about
the Mariners offseason. And I live for the offseason.
Speaker 3 (22:58):
Yeah, you love it.
Speaker 1 (22:59):
I'm just not ready to get too far into the weeds.
But a lot of people have kind of jumped the gun.
And I'm seeing this a lot. And this is another
thing I told Softie. I said, don't do this. Just
don't do this. He and I were talking... Of course,
we got to hang out socially and all we ended
up talking about was Mariners baseball.
Speaker 3 (23:18):
Of course, that's not surprising.
Speaker 1 (23:19):
And so I said, just don't do this. Don't be
the person that is already trading away George and Logan
and then acting like the team's just going to go
with rookies next year.
Speaker 2 (23:34):
Right. Okay?
Speaker 1 (23:36):
If they do trade away Logan and or George this offseason...
Here's the funny thing about baseball and sports. You get
stuff back.
Speaker 3 (23:48):
Yes, true.
Speaker 2 (23:48):
You do.
Speaker 1 (23:49):
We're not just going to trade Justin Jerry, whoever's in charge,
is not going to trade two pitchers of that caliber.
And believe me, baseball thinks they're special. They think they
still could go to another level. You're not going to
trade those guys away at a really cheap salary in
(24:09):
comparison to by comparison to other aces and No. 2s
and No. 3s across the league, and not get a
big return. You're going to get hitters in return. So, yes,
they might get rid of Logan and George. I think
they're definitely going to get rid of one of them
this offseason, but they're going to get something back that
(24:30):
plugs one of the holes offensively because Kate Anderson will
be in our starting rotation next year, and maybe even
Ryan Sloan.
Speaker 2 (24:37):
So.
Speaker 1 (24:39):
So yes, if you're going to play that game, if
you want to play that game, don't do, okay, so
we're just getting rid of George and Logan and then
we're not going to add anything else. Don't play that game.
If you get rid of George and Logan, you're going
to get huge returns for both of them that are
going to satisfy some of those holes that you seem
so somber that we don't have filled right now for
(25:00):
2027 on September 11th. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (25:03):
And I mean, I don't, I don't like thinking about
the off season cause I don't like thinking about the
idea of losing George or Gilbert or, I mean, I,
I also grow more attachment, I think to these guys
than a lot of, fans do right i'm i want
to keep them all i'm like the mariners i want
to keep all our prospects and all our guys but
i mean i i get it and i and i
definitely think that if they're getting rid of one of
(25:25):
them we're going to get a really good return yeah you're.
Speaker 1 (25:28):
Going to get a good hitter in return i mean
it's not going to be ellie dela cruz people need
to stop.
Speaker 3 (25:33):
Doing that too probably not you're probably.
Speaker 1 (25:35):
Get a good good return i mean i'll give you
an example st louis cardinals have been in on these
two guys it sounds like for years if you got
like an ivan herrera and a Josh Baez in return for...
That's kind of the area that I'm looking in. That's
two right-handed hitters, both young, both controllable. That's the kind
of trade it's going to be. It's not going to
be Logan Gilbert for Juan Soto.
Speaker 2 (25:57):
Right.
Speaker 1 (25:58):
That's not what's going to happen. So just let that
prepare you for the offseason.
Speaker 5 (26:03):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (26:03):
And then stop talking about it because I'm not ready. Finally,
H is for Houston and the potential Houston heist.
Speaker 4 (26:11):
I mean.
Speaker 1 (26:12):
Ashley's keeping the hope alive. I want her to keep
hope alive. And let's think about this. Over the next
nine games, the Houston Astros have to face Tampa at Tampa.
Then Kansas City, which isn't the same Kansas City team
as the first half. They've won 16 of their last 25.
They've gone 27 and 23 over their last 50. So
(26:34):
they are playing much better baseball right now than they
were in the first half of the season. And then
they have to face the Atlanta Braves. So that's That's
some tough competition over the course of their next nine games.
It's fathomable, right? It might even actually be statistically on
point to predict a four and five stretch for the Astros.
I mean, they might exceed that, but facing that kind
(26:57):
of competition, that feels a little bit like five and four,
four and five to me for the Astros. Let's go
ahead and give ourselves a little bit of hope and
say they go four and five over that stretch. Mariners
are at the A's, at the Angels, and at the Rockies.
It's a nine-game road trip, but those are arguably the
three worst teams in the sport. Yes. It's not out
(27:18):
of the question you can go eight and one.
Speaker 3 (27:21):
Not out of the question.
Speaker 5 (27:22):
You just got to not do what you did against
Oakland or the A's, wherever they're from.
Speaker 1 (27:27):
So let's say, I mean, look, we have to think
in these terms if we're going to talk about a comeback.
I mean, you're going to have to have a really,
really hot stretch.
Speaker 3 (27:37):
Correct.
Speaker 1 (27:37):
So let's say 8-1. That's what you got to do
over the next nine.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (27:41):
And they go 4-5. Now all of a sudden you're
two games back and you face Houston in back-to-back games.
Speaker 3 (27:49):
See, it's not crazy to be hanging on to hope.
Speaker 2 (27:52):
Right.
Speaker 1 (27:52):
Now, you still have to finish, but you get to
finish against the Angels. They get to finish against the A's.
So they're going to have just a soft competition their
last four games of the year. But if you can
get within two?
Speaker 5 (28:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (28:04):
And have two against the Astros? Who we've dominated? I mean, that...
That's not out of the question considering the competition that
both teams have to face over the course of the
next nine games. But you have to win at that pace.
You've got to win at least seven, if not eight
or nine, in the next nine. That's what you have
(28:24):
to do.
Speaker 5 (28:24):
And then hope that they lose. But the other thing is, too,
you could tie them because you have the tiebreaker. So
if you could tie them, you'd win.
Speaker 3 (28:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (28:32):
And even with those two games, Houston can't take that tie.
We've dominated the Astros this year. So there's your path.
Speaker 3 (28:39):
Let's do it.
Speaker 1 (28:39):
Go 8-1, at worst 7-2, which should be feasible against
this bad a competition. And Houston could very easily go
4-5 at best 5-4 against Tampa, a hot Kansas City team,
and Atlanta.
Speaker 3 (28:55):
And I'll be cheering for all three of them real hard.
Speaker 1 (28:57):
All right, so there's your path. Let's see if it
can happen. Let's pull off the Houston heist.
Speaker 2 (29:01):
I love it.
Speaker 1 (29:01):
All right, coming up next, it's our Big Ten preview.
We do it every week, and we need to make
pickups as well. which means we need a contestant, don't we?
Speaker 3 (29:12):
Or are we keeping... We have to.
Speaker 1 (29:15):
Let's see if we can track down Eric and he
can make the first pickup.
Speaker 3 (29:18):
Let us know, yeah.
Speaker 1 (29:19):
Because I forgot to promote this. Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
All right, full slate in the Big Ten this weekend.
I look forward to when this is conference season so
we can condense this. you know. But it's a pretty
(29:43):
long list of the schedule to have to go through.
But here's what you got. Rutgers at Boston College tonight
at 4.30. And then on Saturday starting at 9 a.m.,
you have Howard at Indiana, Oregon at Oklahoma State, Oklahoma
at Michigan, Penn State at Temple, Wake Forest at Purdue.
(30:04):
Then in the 1230 slated games, you've got UW hosting
Utah State, Mississippi State at Minnesota, which is the featured
game on CBS, CBS, this weekend with Coach Neuheisel and
the gang. Duke at Illinois. How about that? That's a
great basketball matchup. Eastern Michigan at Michigan State and Maryland
(30:25):
at UConn. And then in the 4 to 4.30 range,
you've got Bowling Green at Nebraska, San Diego State at UCLA,
Western Illinois at Wisconsin, Ohio State at Texas 4.30, Iowa
State at Iowa 4.30, and then the 8 o'clock night game,
USC will host Louisiana at 8 o'clock tomorrow night. So
(30:48):
Big Ten, a lot of teams in action. Nobody's on
by this week. And we have to make our college
football pickups, our Big Ten fantasy pickups in our showdown draft, which,
by the way, our listeners, we should have never included.
They're dominating so far.
Speaker 3 (31:03):
They're too good.
Speaker 1 (31:04):
They are in the lead. Almost a hundred point opening
week for Eric, the listener. with his team of Kamari
Moulton of Iowa, who had a huge day, Charlie Becker
of Indiana, Bo Jackson of Ohio State, and his quarterback,
Dante Moore of Oregon. Anders had a great first week, too.
He scored 87. Ashley had a great first week. She
(31:26):
had the high-point person. She had Smith. Why am I
blanking on his best player in the country? Jeremiah Smith,
81 points. Points for Ashley in opening week, and Smith
had 37.6 of those points. And I had a terrible week.
Everything went wrong, and I finished with 52. But we've
(31:46):
got a long way to go, and every week you
can do ad drops, one ad drop per week, a pickup.
I didn't think Eric, the listener, would make a pickup,
but apparently he's already dissatisfied with his roster, his first-place roster.
Speaker 5 (32:01):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (32:01):
Anders does have the first pick, but he has passed.
He feels good with his group. Eric, though, is on
the line with us and does want to make a change.
Either that or he's just trying to catch me off
guard and wants to make fun of me for how
good his team is.
Speaker 3 (32:16):
Maybe that.
Speaker 1 (32:16):
I don't know. Maybe that's what he's doing.
Speaker 2 (32:18):
Hi, Eric. Hey, how's it going today?
Speaker 1 (32:21):
Do you have business to do or are you just gloating?
Did you just call to gloat?
Speaker 2 (32:26):
Well, you did make me check a meaningless game in
the TSA airport line this weekend. So I have to
raz you just a little for making me do that.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
Well, it wasn't much of a stat that you were
looking at if it was that Rutgers game.
Speaker 5 (32:42):
Oh, man.
Speaker 1 (32:43):
Because my guy did nothing in that game. All right, well,
you've got the first pick. Now, keep in mind, if
you make the pick, you go to the bottom of
the line next week if no one else does. But nonetheless,
with 100 points in your opening week, you've got an
itch to make a roster change. What are you going
(33:04):
to do?
Speaker 2 (33:05):
Yeah, I'm going to swap– Bo Jackson out. That timeshare
for me is not going to work in the long
run because they're obviously just feeding the hot hand there.
Speaker 1 (33:16):
Okay. All right. So he's getting rid of Bo Jackson.
That's just sad to hear.
Speaker 3 (33:20):
It is sad. All right.
Speaker 1 (33:22):
So who are you picking.
Speaker 5 (33:25):
Up?
Speaker 2 (33:25):
Give me Woods, the running back out of UCLA.
Speaker 3 (33:28):
Of course he's going to do that when I was
going to do that.
Speaker 1 (33:30):
Okay. Yeah. Woods from UCLA.
Speaker 2 (33:34):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (33:37):
Anthony Woods.
Speaker 1 (33:37):
That's the pick. Where happened to Wayne Knight? Newman from Seinfeld.
He was supposed to be the starter, and they've already
ditched him for Anthony Woods. All right. Anthony Woods running
back is the pick.
Speaker 2 (33:55):
Knight is back. Clearly their goal line guy and inside
the 20. Woods is their home run hitter.
Speaker 1 (34:03):
All right.
Speaker 2 (34:04):
So I like him to develop the yards and give
me those bonus points that I need. Excellent.
Speaker 1 (34:08):
All right. Well, nice work, by the way. I hope
your team slows down considerably this week, but you're off
to a great start. So thanks for calling in. Thank
you for your pick, sir. I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (34:20):
Absolutely.
Speaker 1 (34:20):
Pleasure to help. All right. Pleasure to help. Eric, the listener.
The listener team this year in the showdown. All right, Ashley,
you have a pick as well. What are you going
to do?
Speaker 3 (34:29):
I'm not going to do anything. I'm just going to
see how they do this week.
Speaker 1 (34:32):
Oh, man.
Speaker 2 (34:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (34:34):
Are you officially passing?
Speaker 3 (34:37):
I'm officially passing.
Speaker 1 (34:38):
Nobody's going to take KJ Duff.
Speaker 3 (34:40):
I thought about it.
Speaker 5 (34:41):
I thought about it, but I just, I don't, I,
he's the one bright spot on Rutgers. I've obviously, but
I just don't know that I think Rutgers is good.
So I don't know that I trust that that's going.
Speaker 3 (34:51):
To be a thing.
Speaker 1 (34:51):
See, I would have to decide if Rutgers is now
just a passing team because Antoine Raymond, I have on
my team.
Speaker 3 (34:58):
Yes, you do.
Speaker 1 (34:59):
And I could swap this out, but Raymond was like
my second round pick. Am I really going to give
up on my second round pick this early?
Speaker 3 (35:05):
It's just too early.
Speaker 2 (35:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (35:07):
I mean, I don't know if I felt Duff was
going to be taken. I am going to make a
move though.
Speaker 3 (35:14):
Oh, are you?
Speaker 1 (35:15):
I am going to swap USC running receivers out.
Speaker 6 (35:18):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (35:18):
So I'm going to take Trent Mosley because I think
he just looks like a better receiver than Tanook Hines.
So I'm going to make that move. And KJ Duff
is going to stay out there for another week after
three touchdowns and Eight catches and 188 yards last week
and nobody picked him up.
Speaker 5 (35:35):
Oh, yeah, they had a heck of a game. And
I was debating drafting him the first time. I just can't. Okay.
Speaker 3 (35:40):
I got to get a little bit of a better
feel for my team.
Speaker 1 (35:43):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (35:44):
All right.
Speaker 1 (35:44):
Well, there you go. Those are our pickups for the
week as we get ready for another week of college
football in a full slate in the Big Ten. I
can't wait. I don't even like this part of the season.
I just want to get into conference play.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
Yeah, I know.
Speaker 1 (35:57):
Let's just be done with this. You can't trust any
stats anymore. Miami has 850 yards yesterday of offense and
three quarters of play. I don't want to play these
games anymore. Just get to conference play.
Speaker 5 (36:10):
I agree.
Speaker 1 (36:11):
Let's go. All right, coming up next, Cam Cleland's going
to join us. And yes, the Huskies taking on Utah State.
We haven't paid a huge amount of attention to this matchup.
We'll pay attention to it with Cam Cleland in our
next segment. We still haven't gotten his first impression, his
book report, on what the Huskies did in their opener
against the Cougs last week. So we'll talk to Cam next.
(36:33):
Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
