Speaker 1 (00:12):
Hey, great morning to you all. Happy Monday. Happy Labor Day.
We are laboring here on this Labor Day. Live radio
all day long for you right here at Sports Radio
93.3 KJR FM. It is the last Monday before the start.
of the NFL's regular season. Also, we have recapped the
Apple Cup. 24-10 Huskies over the Cougs yesterday in the

(00:36):
118th playing of the Apple Cup. If you just missed
the last hour, you missed Hugh Millen, our QB1, a
little Monday morning quarterback session talking all Huskies, Cougs in
the last hour. But as we get ready to close
out our first hour, of the show. I do want
to get into Seahawks Patriots since we are just two

(00:56):
days away from that. And I do want to let
you know that if you're making your plans and you
don't exactly know how you're going to spend Wednesday, I
got another option for you. I mean, you got a
looming field. That's an option. That is. You've got home.
I would imagine your home is an option.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
I would hope your home is an option for you.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
Yeah. Neighbor.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
If you got a neighbor that you get along with,
that could be an option. But what about this as
an option? Tulalip Resort Casino wants to host you. Ashley
is hosting as the host for the host. A little party,
a little shindig, a little opener to the NFL season
watch party out at their Tulalip Amphitheater, which is 3,000

(01:40):
seats strong, and it is going to have epic sound
and obviously big giant screen televisions there for you to
take in the game. If you want to be around
other 12s, you want to Be a part of a contest.
Want to take advantage of some beautiful weather out there.
You want to show up in your jersey. Well, Ashley's
hosting a watch party, everybody. That's right. Come on out.

Speaker 4 (02:02):
Me and hundreds of my closest friends cheering on what
I hope is another Seahawks blowout.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
Get there early. Gamble inside the casino.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
You can gamble on your phone while you're watching in
the amphitheater.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
And then, of course, take in the game with friends
and loved ones.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
That's right. And we'll all hug after.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
There you go. Tulalip Amphitheater, when all you want is everything,
everything tulalip.com. The Seahawks get set for Wednesday's action against
the New England Patriots, a rematch of the Super Bowl
that the Seahawks dominated. And so we start anew. Oh,
my gosh, the newness of a season. Just wonderful.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
It's washing over you. The feelings are washing over you.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
I love it. Love it. And, of course, we have
high expectations. And the New England Patriots can't help but
have high expectations. And yet they seem to have a
lot more question marks than... what the Seahawks have to
get ready to start this season. But we aren't without
our questions. As a matter of fact, a few more
popped up on the injury report than I was prepared

(03:06):
to read. Greg Bell joined us at 7.05 this morning,
and I asked him about Nick Emanwuri's available. That we knew,
but now all of a sudden, Ty Okada, his situation
is questionable, and a few others. And I asked Greg
to tell us about the safeties.

Speaker 3 (03:24):
Well, even worried, the thing is he's yet to now
fully practice since the surgery in July, arthroscopic surgery on
his ankle.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
He was a.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
Limited participant yesterday. It's not hard to read the tea
leaves there that if he was going to play, he'd
be fully practicing by now. And if he's not fully practicing,
it means he's missing reps in the starting defense, in
the game plan. Ernest Jones yesterday, we were asking him
about what Neiman Worre does for this defense, and he says, well,

(03:59):
when he comes back, he's going to be like an alien.
He can do anything. Well, we'll get him back, but
for now, we'll worry about the guys who are here.
So he was pretty much saying he's not going to
play in his first game, and it's a little bit
of a surprise, but it does speak to how difficult
this has been for him. I mean, his rookie season
last year could not have gone better. It was idyllic,

(04:23):
and from day one Even game one, when he had
the high ankle sprain, he came back in three weeks
and took off to be one of the most dynamic
defensive players in the league, rookie or not. And now
this is a setback for sure. The surgery, and McDonald
has talked about how difficult it's been for him. It's
not been a straight trajectory of surgery to recovery to play.

(04:46):
There have been ups and downs and delays, and now
this looks like another delay of a beast one game.
They're hoping perhaps they could get him back for two.
They haven't ruled him out yet, but the signs are
pointing that way. Ty Okada did not practice yesterday with
a hamstring issue, which had to have happened in practice,
of course, because they haven't played at all in the preseason.
And Okada was out there through the end of preseason practices,

(05:08):
so it has happened in the last week or so,
which doesn't pretend very well for him. Hamstring issues are
not a day or two, and you just come back.
Those tend to last a bit. And the fact that
he didn't practice on an injury that's apparently newer suggests
he won't play either. So that leaves Julian Love with
the only safety on the active roster who's healthy to play.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
And not that. Crazy. Start the season and all of
a sudden, yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
I don't like that.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
We're down to Bud Clark. And Eamon Ward, even though
he doesn't play true safety, plays this hybrid monster position
that Mike McDonald created for such a special athlete. um
more of a linebacker than a safety still listed as
a safety um and then maybe losing okada as well

(05:56):
so d'anthony bell is probably going to start um i
think that at least there's a really good chance maybe
not probably but possibly uh he is going to start
on wednesday for the secondary and so if you're thinking
about a question mark i mean here it is um
you got julian neal who's way behind schedule because he

(06:17):
spent his entire training camp and preseason rehabbing. Avery Smith's
brand new, and this is an undrafted rookie, after all,
that is brand new to the team. So I don't
know if you can expect a lot out of him.
So we'll see. We'll see how Mike McDonald pieces all
of this together. But I feel pretty good about every

(06:38):
single area. of the roster and of the depth chart,
but it's impossible to feel good at this stage about
the secondary and particularly the safeties.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 4 (06:48):
And I think, obviously, I trust that Mike McDonald will
be able to figure something out that will be decent,
but it is unnerving going into it, hearing how many
injuries we've got.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
And I think we're going to be fine, but it's still... Yeah.
It's concerning.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
It'll be fun, but not exactly how you want to
start the season.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
No, not at all.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
Also, Anthony Bradford was on that injury list. Doesn't sound
too serious. I don't think that Greg had the same
doubt about him and his playing ability. But if he
does sit, that's something starting five, never played together during
the preseason. And if he's not available, you're going to

(07:31):
go another game without having played a game together or
any time at all together except practice. Christian Haynes is
the guy that has been backing up Bradford in practice,
so that would be the answer. But there's a possibility
that he might not go. He showed up on the
injury report as well. Does sound like the running backs,
those that we have, are good to go. All of them.

(07:52):
Judarian Price is healthy. He just was bubble-wrapped so that
he wouldn't injure himself or re-injure anything, but he's now
a couple of weeks, two, three weeks, maybe removed from
an injury issue. Uh, George Helani is healthy to go.
Emmanuel Wilson is full participant as well. So, um, I mean,

(08:12):
obviously running back, the running back room is a question
mark for the Seahawks going into this year, but in
terms of their health, Our questionable running back room is healthy. Yes, exactly.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
No questions there, at least.

Speaker 1 (08:26):
We might not be able to run the football, but
it won't be because of injury.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
Yeah, it'll just be performance.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
Yes. Wrap yourself in that blanket of comfort.

Speaker 4 (08:35):
Yeah, boy, am I fascinated to see what happens, though.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
That is for sure.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
But also very nervous.

Speaker 1 (08:40):
I'm really interested to see where Jadarian Price goes in
our KJR Fantasy Draft tonight. Me too. I mean, there
are a few Seahawks fans in the draft.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
Just a couple. Just a couple.

Speaker 1 (08:51):
So he'll probably be overdrafted, frankly, but I'm wondering how
high someone will take Jadarian Price. Yeah. And how low
someone will take Zach Charbonnet.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
Yeah, Zach Charbonnet. I actually got mad yesterday in my draft.
Someone took Zach Charbonnet.

Speaker 4 (09:05):
I was like, oh, I'm going to just stash him
over here.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
It's going to be great. And someone right before me
took him.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
Oh, boy.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
That does anger you, doesn't it? Yeah. I don't even
know how John Schneider and, like, legitimate general managers and
legitimate drafts even handle that.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
No, because it feels personal.

Speaker 4 (09:22):
It's like, why are you going after everyone I'm going after?

Speaker 2 (09:25):
What are you doing?

Speaker 1 (09:27):
It really does. I've had a few yelling sessions in
my life over stuff like that. Anyway, by the way,
before I move on from Greg, next fact or fiction
pick is that started today, 1135 with Greg, and you
probably already know what he's going to do.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:41):
So if you believe in Army, take fact.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
Yeah. All right. Let's talk about the New England Patriots.
Let's start that ball rolling toward Wednesday because I got
to believe they've got even more questions. And let's just
start with the stability of the organization. I mean, the
biggest scandal of the offseason, it overtook news stations. for
goodness sake. I hesitate to bring it up because what

(10:04):
did I say on NFL schedule day? I don't want
the Patriots to be our opener because I don't want
Diana Rossini to be a story on our opening day. Yep.
And so here I am bringing it back up. So
I guess I'm playing into it and I'm guilty of
the same thing that I'm going to bring it up.
I'm bringing it up though. Number one, just to remind

(10:25):
you that that might creep into coverage, but also number two,
there are some stories out there. There are some rumors
out there that there are a number of different, uh,
journalistic sources that are saving a story a follow-up on
diana russini for wednesday oh so that it will be

(10:50):
talked about during the opener now i don't know how
much faith to put into that i mean this is
stuff that you see off of um the off of
x and i don't know how reputable those sources are
but According to a number of different reports, there are
some people that are saving a Diana Rossini update where

(11:13):
they've done some research for the game. Because, you know,
you're going to get your story talked about and get
your byline out there. You're going to do it when
we're getting ready to start the NFL season. So we
might have to deal with it. It might be a
major story if we have new information online. right on
the doorstep of the season beginning against the New England Patriots. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (11:34):
And it's just such a bummer because it does feel
like it was the same with the Super Bowl, obviously
not in this conversation, but there were, it was like
the game was the least important part of it. You know,
people weren't impressed with either team and they didn't think
there was any flash on either team and there was
no star power on either team. And it was all

(11:55):
of that versus the actual skill and talent of the
teams that were playing, or at least one of the
teams that was playing.

Speaker 2 (11:59):
And so now you're going to go into this and
hope like, OK, well, hopefully this is about.

Speaker 4 (12:03):
The defending Super Bowl champions in a Super Bowl rematch
to start off the NFL season. And it should be
about the job that Mike McDonald has done and the
camaraderie of this team, because everyone just got to see
it in hard knocks and all of these.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
Things and the game itself. But it won't be.

Speaker 1 (12:22):
It won't be if there's new, fresh information. It won't
be if Mike Vrabel's going to be asked another series
of uncomfortable questions. If somebody's got a new report or
salacious content, it's going to be a story. Mike Vrabel's
going to have to address it, and he's not going
to want to address it. I mean, he's been very

(12:44):
adamant about, I'm done addressing this. Well, if he gets
a new story, if there's a new story or a
new wrinkle— or a new scandal, part of the scandal,
then it's going to become a big discussion. Maybe, is
it on NBC? Maybe NBC, is that the openers on NBC?
I can't remember now. Maybe the network itself will try
to play that down. Maybe Roger Goodell will place a

(13:06):
phone call and say, you better not focus on this.
But you know a lot of the entities... Because everybody's
going to be doing their own countdown to kick off.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
Yes, of course.

Speaker 1 (13:16):
Every network. I mean, so they're going to tackle it.
It's just, it could end up being the major topic
instead of the things that we want it to be.

Speaker 2 (13:26):
Yeah, exactly. And that's a bummer.

Speaker 1 (13:29):
As for the Patriots themselves, there were reports the entire
training camp that the ship's been rocked, that they're not
feeling real good about things in New England, that Maybe
their focus hasn't exactly been there for training camp. There

(13:52):
are people picking the Rams over the Seahawks, but I
don't think anybody, except for a few fools, think that
the Seahawks are going to fall off to any great degree.
There are some people, though, that think the Patriots will.
I don't think it has everything to do with Russini, certainly.
But there are some issues. Christian Gonzalez is in a

(14:13):
contract negotiation. We got our guy done. Their best cornerback
is talking, he's talking about getting traded, for goodness sake.
So there's that story. They've got Travion Henderson is probably
not going to play in this game. It's not looking
like he hasn't practiced in two weeks. Ramondre Stevenson and

(14:35):
he form sort of a co-running back situation. Now, without that,
I think Stevenson can carry the male, but maybe not
on opening day. And their third stringer is a relative unknown,
a guy by the name of Corey Kiner, who would
be stepping in to that role. I've never even heard
of him until I did the research for the game.

(14:58):
So they are, if we're thin at running back, Patriots
are definitely thin at running back. A.J. Brown, that's one
positive source. A lot of people predicting a huge season
from A.J. Brown. being able to team him with Drake May.
Drake May, who finished runner-up for the MVP a year ago,
and he really did it without a wide receiver one. Well,

(15:19):
the theory is that we now have a wide receiver one.
Of course, A.J. Brown's coming off of three years of bitching.
And so I don't know if he's done with that,
if he's ready to now be a team player again,
but he certainly gives them the potential for a wide
receiver one. I've heard Adam Schefter suggest that he thinks

(15:42):
that A.J. Brown's going to have the impact on the
Patriots that Terrell Owens once had on the Philadelphia Eagles,
where they were shy a wide receiver won. Owens comes over,
gives them something they hadn't had before. They go to
the Super Bowl, for goodness sake. So A.J. Brown, maybe
he does have that sort of impact, but it does
give them a weapon we certainly did not face in

(16:04):
the Super Bowl. Will Campbell? the left tackle who struggled
so mightily against the Seahawks in the Super Bowl and
in previous games as well. We found out after the
season was over that the left tackle was just fighting
through injuries that he wouldn't have normally fought through, but
he just did it to be there for his team.
It doesn't change. I mean, he might be healthy. He's

(16:26):
still going to have T-Rex arms. We know that. But
that could be a different left tackle than what we
faced in the Super Bowl. So there are stories abound
for opening day. And I hope that it does remain
on the football product and where the Patriots are months

(16:48):
after losing the Super Bowl, where the Seahawks are months
after winning the Super Bowl. I hope that remains the
number one story, but there's a chance that we're going
to dip into TMZ for the next 24 to 48 hours.

Speaker 4 (17:01):
Yeah, and I hope it does remain on the football
game and the team. There's a lot of fascinating things,
especially I think for Seahawks fans, to have our team
be the defending Super Bowl champs and come back and
get to see what changes or improvements they've made and
how they've filled the holes that they've that they had.
And the biggest one being Jadarian Price. I'm real excited

(17:24):
to see how he runs, how he looks. Cause I mean, we,
as we know, even in college, we didn't really get
a look too much of a look at him. So
it is, I mean that stuff, I just, yeah, I would,
I want it all to be focused on all that.

Speaker 1 (17:35):
I can't wait until Jessamyn takes Judarian Price with the
number one pick tonight.

Speaker 2 (17:38):
Oh, man, that would be a bold move.

Speaker 1 (17:40):
Yeah, I think you should do it, Jess. I think
you should do it. Yep. Just, you know, outsmart the
rest of the competition.

Speaker 3 (17:46):
That's right.

Speaker 2 (17:47):
Know something we don't.

Speaker 4 (17:48):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (17:48):
All right, coming up next, I haven't done a lot
on this team today for some really good reasons, but
ABC's of the M's next. Sports Radio 93.3 KJRFM. recapping
the Apple Cup, getting you ready for Wednesday's Seahawks opener.
But that doesn't mean that the Mariners aren't on our brains.
We did Mariners morning after at 630. We do ABCs

(18:11):
of the M's every show throughout the baseball season. And
so here we go. ABCs of the M's. We're at
the end of the alphabet and maybe at the end
of our rope and maybe at the end of our chances,
all of that sort of thing. It feels a little
symbolic to me. But we are at Y and Z
here today. And Y is for yellow. Because here's the

(18:34):
only good thing I can say about the first two
games of the series against the Oakland A's. Or the
whatever A's. I really do like the yellow in our
City Connect jerseys. It really pops. It is vibrant. Yeah,
I really like that.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
I also like the blue in it, the royal blue
kind of on there. It's a good combo.

Speaker 1 (18:57):
And the black pants have even kind of grown on
me over time.

Speaker 4 (19:01):
I would say that's a good way to put it,
grown on me, because I don't love them, but I
don't know what the other option would be if you
didn't have black pants, unless you kept the blue going
all the way.

Speaker 2 (19:10):
But that seems like you might look like Smurfs.

Speaker 1 (19:12):
Yeah, we could have had brown shorts on, and it
would have outshined our play.

Speaker 2 (19:18):
Well, I think maybe some people did have brown shorts.

Speaker 1 (19:21):
Yeah. At least in a certain area of the shorts.

Speaker 3 (19:26):
Correct.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
Of the shorty pants. I mean, terrible. I mean, just terrible.
Just what this season has been, which is, I mean,
I don't want to speak on behalf of 50-year Mariner fans,
but it's certainly the most disappointing season in my 11.

(19:47):
And there have been a few of them. In 11
years here. Such a good team on paper, and a
lot of guys easy to root for. Most of the team,
easy to root for. I mean, I have my issues
with Randy Rosarino, but I really like him, and I'm
glad he's on our team. But for them to have

(20:09):
played this poorly And every opportunity they had to correct it,
to course correct this season. And Thursday into Friday was
the ideal opportunity to course correct this season. And for
them to lose three straight games to the team playing
worse in all of Major League Baseball without... They actually

(20:33):
have some good, talented players. None of them are available
to them. They used a AAA pitching staff. They have
nothing to play for but fight and grit and pride.
We have everything to play for, and you can't win
a game in the first three games of the series.
And by Saturday, the Boo Birds were out, and for

(20:56):
very good reason. The true lack of effort showed sort
of a, we don't care anymore. We folded the tents
from a couple of guys. I'm not going to mention
any names. But it kind of looked to me like
there were a few guys that cashed in their chips

(21:17):
and to have had to have a meeting, a team
meeting on Saturday night at this stage in the season
to say, are we going to try to get this
crap together or not? It's embarrassing. Not only is it disappointing,
it reached a level of embarrassment this weekend.

Speaker 2 (21:36):
Yeah, and I think that's fair.

Speaker 4 (21:37):
I think if you're playing this team with Nick Kurtz
and Shea Langoliers and, you know, all those guys on.

Speaker 2 (21:43):
It, then you're not as disappointed at this outcome.

Speaker 4 (21:46):
Obviously, losing three of four to the A's is going
to be disappointing either way, but at least at that point,
you can kind of rationalize it because, especially, Shea Langoliers
kills us all the time. So, at that point, yeah,
you can rationalize it, but to lose to this team,
to lose a series three out of.

Speaker 2 (22:04):
Four games, you can't even wrap your head around it. Like, why.

Speaker 4 (22:09):
Why is it that we go to Boston, we manage
to win a series, should be coming home on a
positive note, ready to go win three, four, five, maybe
six games in a row if you sweep them, and
you can't? I mean, there's no rhyme or reason as
to why they performed so badly in those three games.

Speaker 1 (22:28):
Well, they just haven't been a good team. I mean,
I can sit here until I'm blue in the face
and tell you they should have been, but they just
haven't been a good team this year. They are what
their record says that they are. It's not because of
flukes or it's not because of bad luck or anything
like that. They've played this poorly. They have earned their lot.
It was a little encouraging to me to hear Brian

(22:49):
Wu say afterwards to the fans yesterday after his excellent
performance that if you think you're frustrated, we're 10 times
more frustrated than you are. Sort of, we're worthy of
those boos that we got on Saturday. And then he said,
but stick with us.

Speaker 3 (23:06):
I mean.

Speaker 1 (23:08):
You probably have to go 15-3 the rest of the way,
which I think is the harder part. Because you've got
two teams you've got to chase down. You're still four
games back in the Texas Rangers. I think they're at
least going to play around 500, which means you have
to be nearly perfect the rest of the way. So, yeah,
I mean, Ashley's not going to give up. I'm not

(23:29):
saying it's mathematically impossible. But I need a little more
encouragement than stick with us to believe that you guys
are ready to do something special because I've been waiting
all year long.

Speaker 2 (23:39):
Well, yeah.

Speaker 4 (23:40):
And they have repeatedly let us down and not shown
up when we've numerous times thought, this is the moment.
This is the spark. This is the thing they needed.
And it just fizzles out every time. So they haven't
given us a reason, really, to think that anything's going
to change.

Speaker 2 (23:56):
I get that.

Speaker 3 (23:57):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (23:57):
It's just crazy. Looks like it's just going to be
chalked up as just one of the worst years in
this franchise's history. Yeah. Finally, Z is for Zimbabwe.

Speaker 4 (24:09):
Oh.

Speaker 1 (24:10):
Because, and I don't even know, I know they do
in some African countries, they practice voodoo. I would recommend
that whoever survives, and I don't know who will. I
think everybody is up for evaluation from the top down,
from Jerry Downs. Everybody's up for evaluation. No one should

(24:30):
feel great about their job status or the job that
they did this past year. And I think everything needs
to be evaluated after a stinker like this. But whoever
survives it should take a road trip to some country
that practices voodoo and try to figure out why they've
been cursed in so many areas. And the areas I'm

(24:50):
talking about, I'm not talking about like 50 years of it.
I'm talking about how Taylor Ward could go from being
a productive baseball player, leading the league in walks, one
of the best on-base percentages in the sport, and being
a player that when we faced Taylor Ward when he

(25:13):
was an Angel and an Oriole, it's like, don't sleep
on Taylor Ward. You had to take that guy seriously.
And since we've added him, he's become, and it's not
even close, like statistically the worst player in the league,
that stuff needs to be investigated. And I'm not talking
about like Jerry and Justin. I'm talking about like David

(25:37):
Duchovny needs to come in here and find out why
this stuff happens. How you could four years in a
row bring in someone for a niche ability to hit left-handers,
and they're all veterans, granted. I mean, do you know
how hard that would have to be to four years
in a row pick a guy that was just productive

(26:00):
against left-handed pitchers, and then the moment you signed him,
he became the worst hitter in the sport? Do you
know how hard that would be to try to do that?

Speaker 4 (26:10):
Yeah, it's beyond. I wrote this weekend, how on earth
did he lead in walks? Because he swings at everything.

Speaker 1 (26:21):
And never hits anything hard.

Speaker 4 (26:23):
Yeah, I was like, there's no way this guy ever
was good at getting on base because he's.

Speaker 2 (26:27):
Swinging way outside and low. I'm like, what are you doing?
Why are you chasing that?

Speaker 1 (26:33):
But Ref Snyder, Garver, Pollock.

Speaker 3 (26:37):
Wong.

Speaker 4 (26:38):
Wong.

Speaker 1 (26:39):
Those were all veteran guys coming off really good years.
Mitch Garver almost won the World Series MVP. There has
to be an investigation, and I'm not even kidding you,
and it doesn't have anything to do with voodoo or
anything like that. Why do players come here and suddenly
become worst in the league?

Speaker 2 (27:00):
Yeah, it's baffling.

Speaker 1 (27:02):
And it's one thing to do that four years in
a row with guys who've had an entire offseason, and
who knows? Maybe their eyesight went, you know, maybe Eddie
George hit the wall, and you just had bad luck
and you picked four guys in a row that did that.
It's another thing to get a guy at the trading deadline,
and the next day he comes to you and is

(27:23):
immediately terrible and never gets good. How does that happen here?

Speaker 2 (27:28):
I wish I had an answer.

Speaker 1 (27:29):
Because I don't ever recall that happening anywhere else. How
does that happen here?

Speaker 2 (27:37):
Yeah, you'll see other people struggle maybe for a week.

Speaker 1 (27:41):
Mark Trumbo, when he came here, horrific.

Speaker 2 (27:45):
Yeah, I don't know. I can't blame that one on Jerry.

Speaker 1 (27:48):
No, he can't, but you know what? But it's, it's
a pattern. Yeah, it is like good players come here.
And I'm not saying that Rob ref Snyder was some
great player, but he was great at this particular niche
skill put on a Mariner uniform. Can't do it anymore.
Not only can I not do it anymore? I am
anti good at that. Yeah. And that's happened four years

(28:12):
in a row with four different veterans who were coming
off really good years and should have been able to
contribute something to this team and were absolute liabilities, negative
war players. And then this one takes the cake with Ward.
I mean, I said at the trading deadline, get somebody
who is actively, I don't even want to risk a

(28:32):
winter them forgetting their skills. Get somebody who is actively
hitting left-handed pitching and can actively get on base and
they get one and he gets here and immediately doesn't
walk for a month and cannot hit a ball hard
and literally has been the worst player in the sport
since we acquired him. How does that happen?

Speaker 2 (28:56):
Again, wish I had an answer.

Speaker 1 (28:58):
And is that Jerry? I mean, we're going to spend
some time on Jerry and blaming Jerry for a few
things here later this week. I can promise you. But
how do you blame him for that one?

Speaker 3 (29:08):
Right.

Speaker 1 (29:08):
How do you blame Justin for acquiring Taylor Ward? Like
I said, we played against Taylor Ward, and it's like, gosh,
don't let Taylor Ward beat you. Not a great player,
but he's always been a solid to good player. For years.
He gets here. I can't do anything. I am not
going to do anything to help you win. I'm that bad.

(29:29):
I just immediately overnight got bad. I got terrible. Sorry.
Sorry about it.

Speaker 2 (29:34):
I don't have an answer. And I wish I did
because that is one of life's great mysteries. It's like
that and Stonehenge.

Speaker 3 (29:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (29:40):
Exactly. All right. One last thing to close out our
show next on KJR.

Speaker 4 (30:11):
All right.

Speaker 1 (30:12):
Final segment of this show here on this Monday morning.
And we always close things out with one last thing
before handing it off to Greg Bell and Jessamyn McIntyre
coming your way here in a matter of moments. So, Ashley,
what do you got for your one last thing here today?

Speaker 4 (30:27):
So I don't know if you saw this, but the
49ers dealt with another injury.

Speaker 2 (30:32):
Someone broke a foot. And who was it?

Speaker 4 (30:35):
It was their defensive end, Sam Okuanyo.

Speaker 2 (30:42):
We'll go with that.

Speaker 4 (30:43):
So he broke his foot during practice last Wednesday. And
then the team was heading out that night to go
to Australia. And they didn't have anybody. They needed somebody
to replace.

Speaker 2 (30:53):
Him right away. So they found a guy.

Speaker 4 (30:57):
Khalid Kareem, who was with, because they needed someone that
had played under Raheem Morris that could just kind of
seamlessly come in. So they found this guy who had
been cut by the Giants and then picked up by
Atlanta's practice squad. And then the day he got to Atlanta,
like went there, had his passport, was at the practice facility,

(31:17):
everything like that. He gets the call that now he's
going to the active roster for the 49ers, but he
has to go basically report right now and go straight
to Australia. So he has to call the facility in
Atlanta and have them let him in at 11 at
night to get his passport. Cause that was like the
big requirement. You have to have an active passport. Then

(31:37):
he has to fly to San Francisco, take a physical
the next morning. Then he gets on a flight that
night straight to Australia. And they like sent him with
his little hydration pack and all these things like to
sleep properly. Then he got off the plane and had
to go straight to practice. And then he could kind
of resume all the activities or be normal with the team.
But he was already there and practicing before his teammates

(31:59):
in Atlanta had even found out he had been picked
up on the active roster to San Francisco. Because they
were all wondering why he wasn't at practice in Atlanta.

Speaker 1 (32:08):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (32:08):
Sounds like a whirlwind story. And I was like, of course,
another injury.

Speaker 1 (32:12):
And how much is he really going to help? I mean,
did you really go through all of that? Like, is
he going to really make a difference?

Speaker 2 (32:18):
Yeah, I have no idea.

Speaker 3 (32:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (32:20):
I'm feeling better about my pick, my first Factor Fiction
pick already. Yeah. All those injuries. Another one, yeah.

Speaker 2 (32:27):
That's why I just was like, oh, my gosh.

Speaker 4 (32:28):
And I saw the article right after you made your pick,
and we were talking about injuries, and I was like,
and there's another one.

Speaker 1 (32:34):
Yeah. I don't know. I mean, I know that both
teams have done their research on this, but one went
down like a week before, and the other one is
like going down like the day of, like the night before.
Like the night before and the week before. So I think.
One's trying to get acclimated to the jet lag, and

(32:55):
then one's saying, if we get there at the last second,
we won't experience jet lag.

Speaker 2 (33:00):
Yeah, we're just going to go play and then get
on a plane and go right back home.

Speaker 1 (33:03):
Is that not nuts?

Speaker 2 (33:04):
Yeah, I will be interested.

Speaker 4 (33:05):
To see if you notice a difference on either one,
aside from their actual skill and injuries and things like that,
but just based on how they arrived.

Speaker 1 (33:12):
I know they didn't half-ass the decision. They did their
research on what they thought was best, but isn't that
strange that that's what they came up with? No, let's...
Go beat it before the jet lag sets in, and
then we don't have to deal with it.

Speaker 2 (33:26):
Such different approaches.

Speaker 1 (33:27):
All right, I'm going to close with this. Something happened
over the weekend. I don't know if people heard about
the Doug Eddings controversy, the Major League Baseball umpire, who's
not one of the guys that has seen the writing
on the wall because of ABS and is going to
retire at year's end. Looks like we're stuck with Doug
Eddings for a while. But he put on just an

(33:48):
absolute S show over the weekend. I mean, first of all,
he told a pitcher to straighten out his cap.

Speaker 2 (33:56):
All right.

Speaker 1 (33:57):
Well, that's bad enough. Okay? Because that's not his job.

Speaker 4 (34:00):
Right.

Speaker 1 (34:02):
And then afterwards, he blamed... Hunter Goodman, the Rockies' all-star catcher,
said that Goodman said it was distracting him, so I
went out there and told him to straighten out his cap.
Goodman said afterwards, that is an absolute lie. I have
never said that. I would never say that. I don't care.

(34:22):
Hitting's hard enough. You think I care about the way
a man's wearing his hat?

Speaker 4 (34:26):
Yeah, that seems like that would be a weak thing
to be distracted by.

Speaker 1 (34:31):
And of course, the Cardinals manager was angry. And then
Eddings blew a call what looked to be on purpose
just because he was angry and animatedly angry at the
Cardinals at the time. And it is a really horrible look.

(34:51):
for baseball. And this is the type of guy that
does need to go. I mean, he's not so great
that he's changing the way baseball is played. Sounds like
he's a pretty average veteran umpire, but he's obviously very
angry that he's had to take so much crap in
his life, and he's reached a breaking point. He's blowing

(35:15):
calls on purpose. Just because he's angry at the Cardinals
who are angry at him for telling their pitcher to
straighten out his cap? And he's lying about the story
afterwards and throwing a player under the bus? Oh no,
he needs to go. He needs to go.

Speaker 4 (35:31):
Yeah, I did like, though, that both the Cardinals and
Rockies warmed up with their hats tilted the next day
just to Yeah.

Speaker 2 (35:37):
Give him two of those.

Speaker 1 (35:38):

If you're in the Snoqualmie Falls area, it looks like
they are alternating traffic on State Route 202, right around
that immediate area.

Speaker 2 (36:16):
So a little bit of a delay with that.

Speaker 5 (36:18):
We also have road work taking place in Spanaway, and
this is affecting both directions of 507 as you're approaching 208th.

Speaker 2 (36:24):
But I-5, 405, 167, all looking great this morning. And
that's traffic.

Speaker 1 (36:32):
Starting slow, heat can damage your.
