Speaker 1 (00:12):
Opening night. The National Football League season will be kicked
off by the world champions tonight at home. The Seattle
Seahawks get ready for the New England Patriots, and we
will be getting you ready to get ready for the
start of the football season all day long right here
on Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM, broadcasting live from Jimmy's
on first, starting at 10 o'clock with Greg Bell, our

(00:33):
Seahawks insider, and taking you all the way through your
favorite talk shows tonight. here on your favorite radio station
as you get ready for your favorite team to start
defending its crown in your favorite sport.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
I like that you said we're going to get you
ready to get ready.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
That's what we're doing.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
And if you're not ready by now, come on, people.

Speaker 4 (00:53):
Get there.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
We've got time to get them there.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
Yeah, but get there.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
Yeah, we're running out. There's no doubt. And I know
what people are thinking. Well, I can't get ready until
I hear Hugh talk on opening day.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
That's what a lot of people are thinking.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
So it's game day. It's time for our QB1 to
join us for his X's and O's segment here on
a Wednesday. Happy football season, Hugh. Ah, great to be
with you. Fun times. It's going to be electric tonight.
You're going to be in a tux tonight. Michelle will
be in an evening gown. You two look great together.
You really do.

Speaker 4 (01:22):
I've already got my corsage on. You know, it's in
the refrigerator waiting to pin it on her.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
I love your old school. Why did the corsage have
to go away after the prom?

Speaker 4 (01:33):
I'm not sure if I've used that word in the
last 40 years, but somehow I dug it out.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
All right. Well, what stands out to you most? What's
first on your mind here on the opening night of
the National Football League season as you get ready for
Seahawks Patriots?

Speaker 4 (01:47):
Well, I hope that there's no complacency. You know, the Patriots.
They went 9-0 in the regular season and then won
a game on the road, 10-0 on the road last year.
They made some change. I think there's a dismissive nature

(02:11):
about Drake May. And I understand it because we saw
all those games in the playoffs. But In the regular season,
he was second in the MVP. His passer rating, the
following stats, he was number one in the NFL in
all of the passer rating, adjusted net yards attempt, explosive
play rate. That's the percentage of plays to get 20

(02:33):
yards or more. EPA per drop back, expected points.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Added.

Speaker 4 (02:38):
That's the new sabermetricians. Love that. He was number one
and 20% above number two, who was Matthew Stafford. Again,
these are new expected completion percentage. I don't know who
the hell decides what they expected, but his 9% difference
was number one. And he rushed for 450 yards. So

(02:59):
this guy was a beast in the regular season. Now,
in the playoffs, passer rating. Now, what I'm going to
give you is the ranking of what he did in
the playoffs, where he would have ranked in the regular
season out of 64 qualifying quarterbacks who threw 20 or more.
His passer rating, he went from first to 41st. uh,

(03:19):
net yards attempt first to 46, uh, EPA, as I mentioned,
first to 56. So yeah, he, he, he dissolved in the, uh,
in the playoffs, you know, those weather weather related for
most of those, obviously not the Superbowl, but, uh, you know, here,
here's a guy that, that, uh, He's thought to be

(03:40):
one of the young upcoming quarterbacks. He adds A.J. Brown,
six seasons of 1,000 yards or more, 2022 Offensive Player
of the Year at 1,496 yards, adds Romeo Dobbs at
number two. I'm not going to get really excited about him,
but I think that we didn't see the best of
the Patriots, and And we'll see. We'll see if the

(04:03):
Patriots of 2025 regular season show up tonight.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
Well, I think maybe a Seahawks fan might overlook him.
I think maybe a Seahawks analyst in town might overlook him.
But Mike McDonald's not going to overlook him.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
Hugh.

Speaker 4 (04:16):
Oh, no, not at all. You know, and look, the
domination was real. I mean, through three quarters, Drake May
was 8-18 for 60 yards. The Patriots offense, 39 plays,
78 yards. Now, we don't even need a calculator for that.
That's exactly two yards per play. They had eight punts

(04:40):
and eight completions. The domination was real. They let history
slide through their fingers in the fourth quarter, but I understand.
We saw a really bad Patriot team, and the Seahawks
made them.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Look that way. No question about it. But Yeah, go ahead.
And they've added A.J. Brown, too, to their offense, and
the Seahawks are down a safety. They're down potentially Nicky Manwari.
I mean, that's got to be the concerning matchup here
in this game is a banged-up secondary going up against

(05:16):
a new and improved receiving core with a runner-up for
the MVP award at quarterback. I mean, that's the matchup tonight,
is it not? Yeah, and you start with Nick Emanwuri.
He was a strong side-to-outside linebacker. And just consider the Seahawks,
how they want to play defense. They were number one
in the NFL in terms of sub-rate, meaning nickel or dime.

(05:40):
And then when you look at dime with six DBs,
in the first eight games, they were two and a
half plays per game. From thereafter, they averaged 18 plays
per game. with a high in the super bowl of
36 plays of dime. And because the, the Seahawks play

(06:01):
with a heavy box rate of 31st second to last,
they they're playing with both their safeties back. This is,
that's the thing about this defense. Not only did they
play with light personnel. Now, even worry was the X
factor because he's considered by the NFL as a safety
and He played as a linebacker. But they played with the.

Speaker 4 (06:22):
Coverages, the cover four, the cover six, where you got
four rolling to cover two. I'm deciding how much X's
and O's I want to get in there. But the
Seahawks were number one in the NFL in a coverage
called cover six, where they take a corner and roll
them to one side, put a safety over the top.

(06:44):
But on the other side, you play with the corner
off and the safety to that side. Anyways, it's a
two-high structure, and the Seahawks were, again, number one in that.
And so in those coverages, particularly when they play the
cover four, when they played all those dime defenses, they're
underneath coverage. You had Ernest Jones in the middle, second-team all-pro.

(07:06):
And then you had Witherspoon would go to the field-side
flat defender, and Eamon Worry as the boundary flat defender.
in dime, and Eamon Worry is the field-side flat defender
in nickel generally. Those are freaky athletes in a scheme
that's asking a lot of the players in that position

(07:30):
because there's not a safety down to help you in
the shallow zones. The safeties are back in the deeper zones.
And so to have that type of athleticism, that kind
of length in the person of Eamon Worry, getting past
breakups against– Justin Jefferson against Puka Nakua against some of
the best receivers and tight ends in the game. So

(07:52):
that versatility just is unmatched. So we'll see. That's a
big part of this. Do they have Tyrese Knight play
in the base? Again, the Seahawks were at or near
the bottom in terms of their use of base. But
if they want to use Tyrese Knight, Uh, would he
be an Eman, Eman worry replacement? He had played a

(08:14):
weak side. Yeah, it's possible.

Speaker 5 (08:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (08:17):
I mean, if, because, because the, the Patriots they've, they,
they brought in a fullback, they've drafted tight ends. Um,
they may want to go heavy on Seattle and, and
test Seattle in that regard. And, uh, and, and so
Seattle may feel compelled to, to, okay. The person of

(08:39):
Eamon Warrie, he was so versatile. Now you're going to
see more substitutions. And by the way, the Patriots offense
a year ago, dead last in terms of the no huddle, 2.4%
no huddle. So Mike McDonald's going to have some time
to look and say, okay, match on personnel to, to, uh,
to what he views as the offensive personnel and the

(09:00):
down and distance. So that may be more base with
Tyrese Knight. But who's going to play the Sam backer?
Both Tyrese Knight and Drake Thomas were weak side linebackers.
So if you put Tyrese Knight on the field with
Jones and Thomas, then is Knight the strong side backer?
That's fine. He's got the athleticism. He doesn't have even

(09:20):
more athleticism because nobody does. But he would be playing
Sam backer for the first time. in his career, at
least for the Seahawks, of any significant note. So yeah,
that's a big Part of tonight's game plan is how
do you adjust for him and worry?

Speaker 1 (09:38):
Yep, no doubt. X's and O's with Hugh Millen here
on game night, game day, as we get ready for
the season to start this evening at Lumen Field. Seahawks
versus New England Patriots, a rematch of the Super Bowl.
On the offensive side of the thing, you've said throughout
the preseason, we're just not going to know about Brian
Flory until we get some examples of his play conversation.

(10:00):
And you've also been a little concerned, maybe more than
a little, about the running game and the running backs
that we have in our running back room. What are
you more suspicious of at this stage as we get
ready to play tonight? Flory and the offensive play calls
are running backs.

Speaker 4 (10:18):
God, there's so much to talk about here. Okay, so
let's just... Let's talk about why Seattle was successful, the
changes they made. The year before in 2024 with Grubb,
they were 11 personnel, 78%. That was number three in
the league. They dropped to 28th in the league. The
12 personnel with two tight ends in Grubb's year, they

(10:41):
were 30th, exactly 30th in expected points added per play,
yards per play, and success rate. 30th, so third to
last in 12 personnel. Last year, they went from 30th
to second in EPA, 30th to first in yards per play,
and 30th to third in success. So the use of

(11:04):
two tight ends, the two backs, the year before with Grubb,
25th in the NFL at just one point, 7%. They
jumped to 24%. Play-action use. They went from 28th to 8th.
And their EPA, listen to these stats in play-action, how
much better they got in play. EPA, they went from
31st in the league to 6th. Yards per attempt, 31st

(11:25):
to 1st.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
And success, 26th to 8th.

Speaker 4 (11:29):
And then finally, motion. They motioned a lot more. They
had been 25th in motion. They jumped to 14th. When
they went in motion, yards per play, they found a
way to get defenses on their heels. They went from
26th to 6th in yards per play when the use

(11:50):
of motion. So there's a lot of things that Clint
Kubiak brought. Now, the– You have to understand there was
two different Seahawks in the regular season, Weeks 1 through 10.
The Seahawks were number one in the NFL in the
following statistics in the passing game. Yards per attempt, net
yards per attempt, yards per dropback, and explosive play rate.

(12:11):
Sam Darnold just chucking it. Weeks 11 through 18, they
ranked 11th through 17th in those stats. I'm not going
to go through all of them. But then they cranked
it back up in the playoffs. The passing game, yards
per dropback in the playoffs were second. Yards per attempt
were third. So they kind of regained what they had
had at the beginning. And then yards per carry, they

(12:34):
had been through weeks 1 through 10, and this is
the running game. They were 29th. They jumped to eighth.
EPA per rush, they were 30th. They jumped to 14th.
So a big jump in the running game, which brings
me to this. Oh, and here's a thought. JSN, his 36.2%
target share was highest in the NFL, but in weeks

(12:58):
one through 12, he was at 40% target. He dropped
to 32%. His receiving yards went from 119 to 74.
So there was a tail off with JSN, despite the
fact that he was the offensive player of the year.
You mentioned the running game. Big concern, right? But here's

(13:19):
an interesting part about this. You saw in hard knocks
where Mike McDonald says, who are we? We keep squeezing
you like a boa constrictor, okay? And that's his vision.
The Seahawks were in net points. How they outscored their
point is they were number one in the NFL in

(13:41):
the first quarter. They were number two by halftime. Through
three quarters, they were number one.

Speaker 1 (13:47):
Got me? Mm-hmm.

Speaker 4 (13:50):
In quarters one through three in their running game, their
success rate, they were sixth. But because they had these leads,
their success rate in the fourth quarter, predictably, fell to
29th because everybody knows they're going to run the ball.
That's okay. You're just trying to salt the game. You're
more concerned about the clock and field position, right? So
that skews some of the statistics. You lose Kenneth Walker.

(14:14):
Here's some concerns about Jadarian Price. If you go back
to a year ago, very similar drafts with the running backs.
You had Ashton Janney in the top 10, and then
you had Amarian Hampton out of North Carolina. He goes
to the Chargers. Just like this year, you had a
top 10 guy in Jeremiah Love, and then Price was

(14:35):
the second guy late in the first round. So his
counterpart from a year before, Amarian Hampton, he had 27
carries per game at North Carolina. Price had under 10.

Speaker 1 (14:48):
9.6.

Speaker 4 (14:49):
That's counting rushes and catches. So he's the only quarterback
in the first round ever to have every season under
125 carries per year. So the workload, because he backed
up Jeremiah Love, we just haven't seen it. And he's
relatively thin. He showed up at the combine 10 pounds
lighter than his listed weight at Notre Dame. And to Ible,

(15:13):
we talked in the summer, Chuck, that that just eyeballing his,
his legs look more like a receiver. So here's a guy, um,
that now here's the good news. Saban matricians, if you
like this, his force missed tackle rate at Notre Dame, 26.9%.
That's number one in all, uh, in the draft class.

Speaker 1 (15:34):
All right.

Speaker 4 (15:34):
He makes guys miss. We have questions about his durability.
They're legitimate. Um, based on the numbers I said, But
he's an electric guy. He had four fumbles, which was
number three in the class. So tonight, he's got to
first and foremost, he's got to hang on to the football.
And then we'll just see if he can be a
dynamic playmaker. You know, his college tape would suggest he

(15:56):
will be, but it's a big night for him.

Speaker 1 (15:58):
All right. Uh, well, um, it's a big night, uh,
for you as well, because, uh, you got film study now, um,
for the first time this, uh, national football league season. So, uh,
I know you don't make predictions. I'm not going to
ask you one. I know you too well to ask
for that, but kind of what is your expectation tonight
as this team gives us the first taste of 2026

(16:19):
Seattle Seahawks football?

Speaker 4 (16:23):
Well, I don't think it's going to be a blowout
like the Seahawks. Um, uh, I certainly think there's a
chance that could happen. I'll be pleasantly surprised. I think
it's going to be far more competitive. There's an interesting–
Josh McDaniels, the guy has six Super Bowl rings. Every
Super Bowl ring that Tom Brady has with the Patriots,
McDonald has the same ring. Excuse me, McDaniels has the

(16:47):
same ring. So the degree to which Mike McDonald dunked
on Josh McDaniels, a six-time Super Bowl play caller– uh, uh,
winning play. Uh, I, I just, that, that, that shocks
me and are, are the Patriots going to be that feeble?

Speaker 5 (17:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (17:06):
I mean, if he's a competitor, McDaniels, this had to
have sat with him all freaking winter and spring, right?
The degree to which he got embarrassed in that Superbowl.
So what kind of wrinkles do they have? Uh, we
see the personnel group and so that's going to be
another fun matchup as well. But I, I think it'll
be competitive. I think, I think the Seahawks win the

(17:26):
game and you know what, without even worry. And with that,
we didn't even get to tie Okada in the back
end of the safeties, but you, you know, there's going to, the,
the 12th man is going to have to carry through
and make up for a couple of those injuries.

Speaker 1 (17:39):
I think they're going to show up.

Speaker 4 (17:40):
I think they're going to have a good night. They're
going to show up and show out.

Speaker 1 (17:45):
All right. Well, we're going to break it all down tomorrow.
It's going to be fun. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (17:47):
All right.

Speaker 4 (17:48):
Rock and roll.

Speaker 1 (17:48):
There he is. Our QB1 with X's and O's here
on this specialty Wednesday opening night edition of X's and
O's with our QB1. And yes, we will have Monday
morning quarterback on a Thursday. That's never happened before. And
so he will be with us tomorrow from 8 to 9.20.
We have a special guest making his debut for 2026

(18:09):
tomorrow at 9.30. But during the season, he will be
with us for the full two hours of Mondays when
we typically run Monday morning quarterback. Imagine that. So that's
kind of the breakdown. And so tomorrow, make sure you
tune in. You'll hear Greg Bell at 7.05. You're going
to have Hugh at 8 o'clock with a Monday morning

(18:32):
quarterback to recap the game. All right, coming up next,
I do this every single year. I make admittedly, admittedly
bold predictions. Like, I'm going to go really far. Like,
odds are they're going to be really wrong. But I'm
going to try and nail something, and you're going to

(18:52):
have to follow me on this little roadmap because it's
going to be all in the NFC West. Sports Radio
93.3 KJR FM. Well, for those of you going to

(19:19):
tonight's game, have a ball. I will see you there
in some capacity. And you won't know who I am,
but we'll pass. I'll see you probably urinating in an alley. Oh, yeah. Anyway,
go Hawks.

Speaker 2 (19:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (19:36):
So, yes, see you out there tonight. Should be crazy.
I am going to do, even though there's not much
left to the season, I am going to do the
Mariners day and then over to the Seahawks tonight, spend
a little time at the broadcasting table. They're at Jimmy's
with the fellas. And so it's going to be a big, big,
another momentous Seattle sports day, which we do so well

(19:58):
here in this city. If you don't want to be
a part of that, if you can't be a part
of that, but you want to be a part of something,
Your idea is I don't want to just watch it
at home. And, you know, the bar, not really my scene.
What about being out at the Tulalip Resort Casino out

(20:20):
of the amphitheater?

Speaker 3 (20:21):
I think that's a great idea.

Speaker 1 (20:22):
For a party hosted by Ashley Ryan with prizes and
other 12s who are glad to see you, who love
to gamble. Well, you're all going to be in one
little area tonight to take in. There's a watch party.
Tonight at Tulalip Resort Casino, and Ashley will guide you
through all the fun.

Speaker 2 (20:39):
I mean, I've got tickets to Smashing Pumpkins. I've got
Seahawks t-shirts and hoodies and Husky tickets. Oh, and an
autographed Cooper Cup helmet.

Speaker 1 (20:49):
Oh, okay.

Speaker 3 (20:51):
Bud Light decided to throw that in there for a
prize for us tonight.

Speaker 1 (20:53):
That's so bad.

Speaker 2 (20:54):
Yeah, there's going to be some pretty awesome things to
give away, so I think people want to go.

Speaker 1 (20:58):
Yeah, yeah. Do you think Smashing Pumpkins named themselves so
that around Halloween we would always think of them?

Speaker 3 (21:06):
I think so.

Speaker 1 (21:07):
I think that was part of the strategy there.

Speaker 2 (21:11):
They were like, what could we do? Because it's probably
their favorite holiday.

Speaker 1 (21:14):
You can't not think about Smashing Pumpkins if you grew
up around that time. So once a year, you're thinking
about pumpkins, and the next thing you know, you're singing
a Smashing Pumpkins song, and then probably buying some tickets
and stuff.

Speaker 3 (21:27):
You're not wrong. You're not wrong.

Speaker 1 (21:29):
Probably a master strategy once upon a time. All right. Well,
let's get to it. Our admittedly bold NFL preseason predictions
for 2026. And I'm going to stay inside the NFC
West for the most part. And so I'm going to
take you on a little journey. Here's kind of what
I am seeing for this upcoming season. Jeremiah Love's going

(21:52):
to be really good for the Arizona Cardinals. Their top
draft pick, what was he, fourth overall out of Notre Dame.
But he's going to be used so... so much less
than you think he should be used because you have
him in your fantasy league. And it's going to infuriate
you that Tyler Algier and James Conner keep getting touchdown,

(22:15):
keep getting carries and keep being used at the goal
line and so on and so forth. It's going to
be infuriating for you. But the reason that I think
this is going to happen is I think the writing's
kind of on the wall for the Arizona Cardinals. They
told Jacoby Brissett, here's your chance to be a starting
quarterback in the National Football League because we want Trey

(22:39):
McBride happy. But we really don't care how many games
we win this year. I don't know if you've seen it,
but we're in the toughest division in the entire sport.

Speaker 3 (22:47):
Yeah, it might not be their year.

Speaker 1 (22:48):
We are looking for our next quarterback, and we would
like to find that in the draft next year. And
if everybody could do us a solid, we'd like to
be good in a lot of areas. We would like
to show progress in a lot of areas under our
first-year head coach, but we'd rather not rack up a
lot of wins.

Speaker 2 (23:06):
It's fair.

Speaker 1 (23:07):
So let's stay in that top 10 at least. And
so I don't know if Jeremiah Love, under those circumstances—
I certainly don't think they're going to use him a lot.
They're definitely not going to overuse him. I think they're
going to underuse him this year and hopefully go like

(23:27):
5-12 and show some progress in a lot of other areas.
And then I think they're going to take Jaden Maiava,
the quarterback out of USC, who might end up being
the No. 1 pick, by the way, based on what
I saw in Week No. 1. That dude can throw
a football. And he's 6'4, and he's 230, and can run.

Speaker 3 (23:45):
Yeah, he's not small. He's very skilled. Oh, my gosh.

Speaker 1 (23:49):
All this Arch Manning talk and Julian Sand. And it's like,
Dante Moore. I think people are sleeping on Jaden Maiava.
He might end up being the No. 1 pick in
the draft.

Speaker 3 (23:59):
Well, it'll be fun to see.

Speaker 1 (24:00):
Yeah, we'll see. All right, so that's what I think
is going to happen with the Arizona Cardinals. San Francisco 49ers,
I am predicting... They finally are going to collapse. Now,
if you've paid attention to this show, you're like, hey, Bozo,
you said that last year. I did.

Speaker 3 (24:15):
I did as well.

Speaker 1 (24:15):
Yeah, I said that last year. And I just, look,
I have respect for that organization and the winning that
they've done. I do not. Under Kyle Shanahan. I think
Kyle Shanahan should have won Coach of the Year. That's
with Mike McDonald in the league, and he didn't even
win it. I thought Kyle Shanahan should have won coach

(24:35):
of the year a year ago. To win 12 games
when you had as many injuries to as many star
players as you had to deal with? Remarkable. I just
don't think he can do that again. I think I
was just a year premature in my prediction of not
necessarily a collapse, but certainly the writings on the wall

(24:55):
kind of season for the 49ers. Actually, I think the
same veteran players who keep getting injured year after year
are going to get injured again this season. I think
Bosa will play a handful of games, and Warner will
play a handful of games, and McCaffrey will play a few.
He'll play half the season, and Kittle will probably miss

(25:16):
a handful of games himself. But it's going to be
the same guys that get hurt, and I think the
writing's going to be on the wall at the end
of the year. I think they're going to go 7-10
this year. I really do. And that is way underscoring
what other people's expectations. And then I think operation sell-off
begins with all of those veteran players who can't stay

(25:39):
healthy for them. But if we can move them one
piece at a time to other teams, then they are
only rolling the dice on one guy at a time.
So I think that's the future, the immediate future. The
San Francisco 49ers, I don't look at them as a threat.
I just don't.

Speaker 3 (25:56):
Yeah, I mean, I can't dispute it.

Speaker 2 (25:57):
I picked them to go under their NFL total over
under wins yesterday. And I did it last year, but
this year I feel more confident and am hoping and
praying harder.

Speaker 1 (26:06):
Hoping.

Speaker 2 (26:07):
But they've given us no reason to believe they can
stay healthy.

Speaker 3 (26:12):
So why should we?

Speaker 1 (26:14):
I said this earlier, so I'm not going to spend
a lot of time on it. As for the Rams,
I believe they are as advertised. I think they are
that good. And I think they're going to have a
13-1 record on Christmas Day. Yeah. when they lose to
the 12-2 Seahawks. And then they're going to think they're
going to get their revenge in the last week of
the regular season, and they are going to lose again.

(26:35):
And I don't say that out of, oh my gosh,
I can't believe this guy in 11 years has turned
into such a homer. I think that Mike McDonald is
going to have a better football team this year. And
maybe the record won't indicate it because of strength of schedule.
And maybe you don't win the Super Bowl. Maybe you don't.
That's a really difficult thing to do. I'm not sure

(26:57):
I am predicting them to win the Super Bowl this year,
despite the gaudy record that I'm sharing with you now
at 15-2 this year. What I'm saying is, does anybody
really think that the Giants were better than Tom Brady's Patriots?
Because they weren't. I know they beat them twice in
the Super Bowl, but they were not the better team.

(27:19):
So strange things happen, crazy things happen, especially in a
one-and-done tournament. But I think this offensive line's going to
be better. I think Sam Darnold's going to be better.
I think the defense grows another level under Mike McDonald.
I think that was the plan all along. It's the
reason why the Rams are going so far to improve
themselves is because they know that the Seahawks are going

(27:40):
to be better this season than they were last season,
and we got to get out ahead of that. So
I'm expecting huge seasons for both of those teams, and
I'm expecting that the Seahawks, by end of year with
a younger team, And maybe a deeper team is going
to be the better team when they finally face each
other on Christmas Day. It's going to be glorious. Three

(28:02):
months from now.

Speaker 2 (28:02):
Go all season or almost all season, build up both resumes,
and then have an epic matchup that you can unwrap
on Christmas Day.

Speaker 1 (28:10):
There you go. Finally, and this is the twist on
it all, the Dallas Cowboys are going to have a
good season this year. They've done some good things. You know,
Jerry Jones is not one of the better GMs in football,
but he's not a buffoon either. I mean, he usually
puts some competitive teams out on the football. Does he not?

Speaker 5 (28:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (28:31):
I mean, they're never, never irrelevant. The Dallas Cowboys are
never irrelevant.

Speaker 3 (28:34):
And they're never going to be.

Speaker 1 (28:36):
I guess even if they were terrible, they'd be irrelevant.
I think he's going to put together a good season.
I also think he's an old man. So when he
says we've got room to make a really big trade
this year, I think he means it because he's running
out of time to win this championship. I think he's
going to trade for T.J. Watt during the course of
the season because the Pittsburgh Steelers are not going to
be very good. They're another team that's going to have
to finally acknowledge the writing on the wall. But I

(29:00):
still think they're going to finish second to Philadelphia with
an 11-5 record. And I think they're going to lose
in the wildcard round to the Detroit Lions. And I
think Jerry Jones is not going to be able to
handle that. And I think he's going to blame his
head coach, who he admittedly chose somebody that he could
sort of manipulate in Brian Schottenheimer. But I also think, Jerry,

(29:24):
he's getting to that age and he's starting to act like,
I don't have a lot of time left. He's finally
starting to act that way. I think he's going to
come after our head coach in the offseason with everything
that he has.

Speaker 3 (29:37):
Gross.

Speaker 1 (29:38):
And I think the Coastless are going to lock up
our head coach to a 10-year, $ 300 million contract. They're
going to blow away the current $ 20 million, I think
it's $ 22 million, to the highest paid head coach in
the National Football League. They're going to blow that away
so that Mike McDonald's here for the next decade. Okay.

Speaker 3 (29:58):
All right.

Speaker 5 (29:58):
Phew.

Speaker 1 (29:59):
And then the Dallas Cowboys and Jerry Jones are going
to turn their attention to a team that I've already
covered that went 7-10 this year under a really good
head coach that maybe should have won Coach of the
Year last year in the NFL. And that team, which

(30:20):
has seen the writing on the wall and has started
to sell off its players piece by piece, are going
to trade Kyle Shanahan to the Dallas Cowboys. Wow.

Speaker 3 (30:30):
That is an admittedly bold prediction.

Speaker 1 (30:32):
And he will sign a five-year, $ 160 million deal. Not
as long, but even more money so that Jerry doesn't
lose out on a second big fish that he will
go after in the offseason. And he will be the
next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. There you go.
There is the season this year in the NFC West.

Speaker 2 (30:53):
I mean, I'm fine if Kyle Shanahan leaves the division.
Don't care about that. Bye.

Speaker 1 (30:59):
You must admit. really bold predictions.

Speaker 2 (31:01):
Really bold predictions you took us on a journey as
you said you promised you and you delivered maybe.

Speaker 1 (31:07):
Maybe you're in your car on yeah stupid bold i'll
give you that they're bold but dumb yeah you didn't.

Speaker 3 (31:13):
Say bold and smart.

Speaker 1 (31:15):
He just said i just said bold admittedly it's in
the title admittedly bold predictions yes okay so uh yes
i i warned you in advance but uh There you go.
There's a yarn. See, I just spun a yarn for you.

Speaker 3 (31:29):
I do see that.

Speaker 1 (31:29):
A football yarn for you.

Speaker 3 (31:31):
I got a lot to think about in that.

Speaker 1 (31:32):
I think it's all going to come true. Every single
aspect of it. I hope it does. I think I'm
going to nail it. All right. Coming up next. Now,
that's how you do bold predictions, Smalls. Did you hear
their segment this morning? It was horrible. Oh. They did
like five predictions. Oh, and none of them were horrible.
And they were all like, I think the Giants... will

(31:53):
play in New Jersey this year.

Speaker 3 (31:55):
Oh, well, that's quite a prediction. Very bold.

Speaker 1 (31:57):
That's not what she said, but it was kind of
like that. All right, one last thing to close out
our show. Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM. All right, one

(32:18):
last thing to close out our show here on this
game day. Hopefully we did our job in getting you
ready for tonight's opener. I think we did.

Speaker 2 (32:26):
Yes, we did.

Speaker 1 (32:27):
I think we did. A lot of Seahawks talk here today.
A lot of Patriots talk here today. A lot of big,
bold predictions made here today. And so here we go.
We ride off. into the 2026 campaign. Greg Bell's going
to be joining you at the top of the hour
with his program live from Jimmy's on First. And I
think the rest of our shows are from Jimmy's today.

(32:49):
And that'll take you all the way up to kickoff.
So don't need to change your dial. All right, Ashley,
what's your one last thing here on this game day?

Speaker 2 (32:57):
We got a lot of texts this morning even before
our show started.

Speaker 5 (33:02):
Oh.

Speaker 3 (33:02):
So we've talked about two other things. stupid things on
the shows that were before us.

Speaker 2 (33:07):
One of them, though, on the one on our station
before we started, Brady Quinn says the Seahawks are going
to miss the playoffs and go 9-8.

Speaker 4 (33:13):
Oh, wow.

Speaker 3 (33:14):
So that's his bold prediction. But it got me thinking,
I didn't get to make my prediction. Oh. And Brady,
they're not missing the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (33:20):
We're going 13-3.

Speaker 5 (33:21):
13-3.

Speaker 3 (33:21):
We play 17.

Speaker 2 (33:21):
13-4.

Speaker 5 (33:21):
Okay, 13-4.

Speaker 1 (33:21):
I'm like, wait, nope, that's not right.

Speaker 5 (33:23):
13-4.

Speaker 4 (33:23):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (33:23):
Yeah. All right.

Speaker 3 (33:24):
That's when Dick Fane's 13-4 call, yeah.

Speaker 5 (33:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (33:25):
Mm-hmm.

Speaker 3 (33:35):
14-3, 13-4.

Speaker 2 (33:35):
I'm going to go 13-4.

Speaker 1 (33:39):
That might be the case. It is a tougher schedule.
You never know about injuries. I think that there is
a world. To me, this conversation about can you be
a better team, you can be a better team without
having a better season. You could be a better team
from beginning to end, But because of a tougher schedule

(34:01):
and because the Rams might keep you from the division
and because who knows what might happen in the NFL
playoffs in a one-and-done tournament, yeah, you might fall short
of the goals that you reached a year ago, but
there's still a world out there where you were a
better football team. that year. And I think that could happen.

(34:23):
I think they could be a better team and maybe
fall even short of 13-4.

Speaker 2 (34:27):
Yeah, they could, but I don't see it happening.

Speaker 1 (34:31):
You don't see 9-8 happening either?

Speaker 3 (34:32):
I don't see 9-8 happening.

Speaker 1 (34:34):
Sorry, Brady. That's the thing about that show featuring two pros.
They don't really follow the football that much.

Speaker 2 (34:43):
No, but they do sure like to talk about it
and other things that aren't sports.

Speaker 1 (34:48):
They follow college football. Yeah. They do follow the college football. Um,
all right. Well, I'm going to close my one last
thing out with this. Um, I need some help. Okay.
With what? Well, it's a little bit of a fantasy
football dilemma, but also a moral dilemma. So I did

(35:09):
end up drafting Drake May and I do believe in
Drake May. Apparently Anders doesn't.

Speaker 5 (35:14):
Hmm.

Speaker 1 (35:15):
Apparently Hugh does.

Speaker 3 (35:16):
Andrews only believes in the Giants, though.

Speaker 1 (35:18):
That's true, which is so weird. Okay, so Andrews doesn't
like Drake May. Hugh does like Drake May. I wonder
who I feel better about.

Speaker 3 (35:28):
The baseball guy, Andrews.

Speaker 1 (35:31):
So, yes, I do like Drake May, and I wasn't
planning on drafting him, but he lasted until, I think,
the eighth round, and Dave Richard told me, don't take
your quarterback until there's somebody on the board that you
don't really like at that point. Then go get your quarterback.
So that's what I did. So I took Drake May

(35:53):
in the eighth round. And I also took Patrick Mahomes
in the 10th because I wanted a really good backup
as well. And I think he's going to have a
really good season this year. And I don't think he's
going to Do some extended handoff, let's protect Patrick kind
of thing on opening night. I think that's exactly what
they want the Denver Broncos to believe. And I think

(36:15):
Patrick Mahomes is going to come out slinging it on Monday.
I really do. But he is facing the Denver Broncos.

Speaker 3 (36:21):
And they have very good defense.

Speaker 1 (36:23):
Very good defense. And Drake May is facing Denver. the
Seattle Seahawks. Now on its face, I would start Drake
May because I drafted him to be my starter, but
I'm also going to the game tonight and I don't
want to spend one ounce of my time sitting there
kind of hoping Drake May does something for my fantasy team.

Speaker 3 (36:45):
That's fair.

Speaker 1 (36:46):
So what would you do? Like this is fantasy football.
I really do want the better guy. And I think
maybe Drake is slightly the better guy, but I don't
hate the idea of starting Patrick Mahomes on Monday night
at home against the Broncos.

Speaker 3 (37:04):
Is there any chance he doesn't play on Monday?

Speaker 1 (37:07):
I guess a very slight. He's not questionable. Andy Reid
said yesterday he's going to start unless something happens between
now and then. That's what he said yesterday.

Speaker 3 (37:16):
Well, I doubt they're going to allow anything to happen
to him.

Speaker 1 (37:18):
He's going to play. He's going to play, and I
think he's going to play aggressively. I don't think they're
going to do some soft thing. Then there you go.

Speaker 2 (37:23):
If you feel confident in that, I'd go with Patrick
Mahomes if you don't want to have to worry about
fantasy football at all tonight. I enjoy going to the
game and then watching the fantasy aspect of it or
watching the game, but I get it.

Speaker 1 (37:33):
That's just it. I'm going to make this right now
and then click it and forget it. So I want
to make this decision before we are off the air,
Mahomes or May.

Speaker 2 (37:44):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (37:44):
And unfortunately, the going to the game tonight and facing
the Seahawks is factoring into my decision.

Speaker 2 (37:52):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (37:52):
I'm going to do something here right now. Okay.

Speaker 1 (37:55):
I'd rather you just.

Speaker 3 (37:56):
I named, I've named each of these, but you don't
know what I've named them. I have a Coke can
and a fork.

Speaker 1 (38:01):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (38:01):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (38:03):
Pick one. Pick one?

Speaker 2 (38:04):
Uh-huh.

Speaker 1 (38:05):
Coke can or fork? Let's go fork.

Speaker 3 (38:08):
That's May.

Speaker 1 (38:09):
There you go.

Speaker 5 (38:10):
Oh, geez.

Speaker 3 (38:10):
Coke can, Mahomes. It sounded more like Mahomes.

Speaker 1 (38:12):
There you go. I'd rather you just tell me who
you think I should start.

Speaker 3 (38:17):
Well, I think you should start Drake May. You do?
I do.

Speaker 2 (38:21):
But I didn't want you to. You said you didn't
want to go tonight and think about fantasy football.

Speaker 3 (38:24):
So there you go.

Speaker 5 (38:25):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (38:26):
All right. Well, I'm not going to even tell anybody
who I'm going to pick. Oh, I can't wait for that.
But I am going to pick... You don't care. I do.

Speaker 2 (38:33):
All right.

Speaker 1 (38:33):
Greg Bell's coming next. Have a great day, everyone. If
you're out there, maybe I'll run into you. It's going
