has been activated by the way off the IL. The
MS have released rob Refsneider and catcher Mitch Garver.

Beajon Robinson three years, seventy five million fifty one million
guaranteed for Bijon makes him the highest paid running back

So I would have taken the worst of the three
can Zone, Taylor Ward, Randy a Rose arena, and I

would have put the worst defender of the three of
them at DH. And they're not doing that tonight, right,
So let's see, Let's see if this move pays off.
Let's see if this is just all about maybe a
soft landing for Taylor Ward and maybe tomorrow Taylor Ward's

because he is an absolute liability in left field, there's

So I'm really curious to see what these guys can do.

to sweep the Tigers. They gotta sweep them. Winning the series.
To me, no longer enough, after what you've done, after

the way you've fallen behind, not just in the AO West,
but also in the Wildcard race. You got a baseball
team with no Tarrek Scoople, a baseball team that has
got to be a little bit demoralized, I think internally
after trading their best player for really nothing, by the way,
from the Dodgers, all those guys that are left behind
him in hell the Tigers. I think the Tigers are
half a game up. I'm the Mariners in the wildcard race,

and they threw in the towel. For God's sakes, they
absolutely threw in the towel. No, they're a half game behind, sorry,
but they're right there. They're two and a half out
of a wildcard spot. And if the Mariners aren't throwing
in the towel, why are the Tigers throwing in the towel?

The Seahawks have embraced this assignment in a way that
the teams had stopped embracing it. You've seen a lot
of resistance in recent years. The Seahawks attitude is we're
proud of how we do things and we want to
show everyone. So I guess it's easy to do.

It when you just won the Super Bowl.
Speaker 8 (10:25):
You know, you really are the cream of the crop
right now. But I like the attitude. You know, if
you have to do it, you may as well accept
it and make the most out of it.

And that's easy to be what they're doing. Yeah, no doubt.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
Well, Mike, there's a lot of moves today a lot
of extensions in the NFL, and I don't know. Let's
start with Bijon Robinson just became the highest paid running
back in the history of the NFL three years, seventy
five million, fifty one million dollars guaranteed. We all know
that the highest paid guy is not always the best guy,
but it kind of feels, I think appropriate, that Bijon
Robinson is the highest paid running back in the NFL.
Speaker 8 (10:58):
Well, And what's ridiculous is how the running back markets
and the other back and the other markets at the
other positions factor into each other. Jackson Smith and jig
the highest paid receiver at forty two point one five million,
most objective individuals would say, I'd rather have the Jon
Robinson dollar for dollar than Jackson Smith and Jigba. And
(11:21):
the way this Robinson deal works, Yes, it's a three
year extension worth up to twenty five million a year.
The base value of the three new years is twenty
two point twenty five million. But when you add that
to the money that he was already due to make
over the next two years, and that gets folded into
a five year deal, the five year deal for the
(11:44):
Falcons is sixteen point three to six million per year.
Speaker 5 (11:48):
Which is a steal for how good he is.
Speaker 8 (11:51):
I think about the cash that some of the best
players in the NFL are getting, and Jon Robinson, who
Raheem Morris when he was coaching the Falcons last year,
said on multiple game it is the best player in
the entire NFL. He is getting peanuts in comparison. And
that's not a reflection on him, that's the reality of
the running back market. And so I thought that both
(12:13):
he and Jamiir Gibbs would be holding the line to
try to change the way running backs are paid. Jon
Robinson didn't. And now the question is how aggressive will
Jamiir Gibbs be in trying to to not just Outdojon
Robinson by a little bit, but by a lot. Because
(12:33):
it's not about the position, it's about what I mean
to the team. And you look at how the Lions
have reconfigured their offense. They got rid of David Montgomery.
They're they're gonna make Jamier Gibbs the workhorse. And you know,
for guys like Robinson Gibbs, you got one chance to
break the bank. This is it twenty four years old,
three years in full tread on the tires. Still, now's
(12:54):
the time to get paid. So I wasn't surprised that
Robinson did the deal, and I guess I'm not shocked
the deal isn't better than it could be, But man,
it's a bargain. You get a great running back like
that and you pay him top of the running back market,
You're getting a great player for a lot less than
other great players cost.

Yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:13):

us on Wednesdays, but we got the Hall of Fame
game coming up obviously, so mich will be a little
busy this week, Mike. He wrote about Aaron Donald at
PFT today trying to kind of increase his presence, grow
his brand a little bit. How much of him coming
back will be kind of maybe driven by that idea
(13:36):
to increase his Q rating a bit.

If you will.
Speaker 8 (13:39):
Well, he's been out of the public eye for two years.
He worked the pregame show for Super Bowl sixty with NBC.
That was the first time we've seen him other than
just like workout videos on social media, but you know,
big platform stuff. He hasn't done much. So you come
back and you play another year for a team that's
gonna have seven primetime games and that is potentially going

to be playing standalone games in the postseason. It's a
hell of a way to make your your transition into
whatever it is he's thinking about doing by hiring the
firm that he's hired to help grow his profile away
from football. So it all kind of fits together now
and hey, to the extens that he wants to get
(14:21):
involved in media and entertainment, He's doing this thing the
right way. He's creating a lot of drama, and he's
teasing us, and he's taking his time, and man, it
just feels inevitable that he's gonna come back. I just
don't know when and how much you'll play once he's
back back on the field.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
Yeah, I was gonna say. I mean, if you had
to put money on this, you would say he's returning.
It's just a matter of when not if.
Speaker 8 (14:45):
Right, Well, he's doing everything he can to get himself
in a football shape, and it reminds me the old
Jerry Seinfeldt bit where he would talk about all these
people trying to get his shape, or are they getting
in shape for you know, most people are trying to
get any shape, are trying to get in shape for anything.
He's trying to get in football shape, well, so he
can say I'm in football shape or to play football.
I think he's going to come back, And the only
(15:05):
way he doesn't is if he is able to objectively
come to the conclusion that he's gonna fall short of
whatever standard he otherwise hopes to establish.
Speaker 5 (15:15):
And you're only going to.
Speaker 8 (15:16):
Find that out if you get out on the field.
That all this other stuff isn't going to tell him
how it's going to feel when he goes against players
who have been playing the last two years, whether in
the NFL or in college. And it reminds me of
when Lawrence Taylor retired. He went to Bill Parcells and
he said, man, these guys are these the young guyser fast?
And Parcels said to.
Speaker 5 (15:38):
Him, no, Lawrence, you're slow.
Speaker 8 (15:40):
You're not the guy you used to be. And And
how can Aaron Danal even begin to come to that
conclusion until he is competing full speed against the guys
who have been playing the last two years.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
Mike, you wrote about Micah Parsons too, I think on
the website about his injury, and uh, you know how
good he's going to be when he does come back.
I mean, I look, they gave up two first round
draft picks for him. You think the Packers are regretting
doing that? And how how effective do you think Mike
Parsons will be when he does come back coming off
the injury.
Speaker 8 (16:10):
Anytime you give up significant assets for a pass rusher,
for any player really, but especially the guy who is
in that pray where all sorts of things can happen
once the ball is snapped, you give up the assets,
you get a big contract. Part of the risk you're assuming,
and and you're assuming that risk away from him. This
is why the player tries to get paid. I want
(16:32):
the risk of injury to be on the team, not
on me. And so the Packers took on the risk
of injury. And now they've got the draft picks riding
on it, they've got the money riding on it. And
the smart play is to not rush anything and let him,
let him get healthy. And he said before this is
about being healthy later in the year, not to rush
(16:54):
back for you know, early season games, and he's talked
about maybe Week six against the Cowboys is the time
to come back. The only risks that you take by
waiting once you start losing games in September and October,
your windows starts to get pretty narrow, and there may
not be playoffs.

If you lose too many games before.

Michael Parsons is back on the field and back to
his usual workload.

of Fame game on Thursday in Canton, Carolina, Arizona. I
thought this was a joke when I first saw it,
but apparently it's not. That the Rams are gonna fly
into Australia the day before they're a game with the
Niners and fly out the day after. I mean, does
(17:42):
that sound like a good idea to you?
Speaker 8 (17:45):
Well, I mean there's different ways you can do these things,
and there's all sorts of advanced sports science, and you know,
I guess the idea is that the jet light doesn't
matter if you never change your clock, right, and you
go there and you go there on your terms, and
you go there on your clock, and you know it's
(18:06):
it's still going to be. What a night game East
Coast time, late afternoon game West Coast time, and you
just stick to that. Maybe that's their calculation for the
minimal disruption on the team. Get in, play the game,
get out. We've seen, you know, for a lot of
the London games. We've seen teams doing that in recent years.
But they come up with a plan, they believe in
(18:27):
the plan, they stick to the plan, and you know,
why go Why all the time you go there ahead
of time is valuable time where you could be in
your regular environment, working and being comfortable and being normal.
You know, I'd love to delay as long as possible,
winning trip I have to make. I love to be
home as long as I can, So they've got to
make the trip of the way. You may as well
(18:49):
keep it short. You can go to Australia on a
vacation after you retire.

Yeah, you're not putting your neck on the line though,
right literally physically when you step out of your to
your you know, a place of work when you land

to jump on with us. Why don't we before we
kind of get into what the Mariners did here, Steven,
the deadline, sending Castillo to the White Sox, getting Taylor
Ward from Baltimore, give us your take on a Mariner
baseball team with Josh Naylor, Julio ky Roley, Randia Rose Arena,
(20:44):
all these great starting pitchers Andres Muno's being three games
under and struggling so mightily in maybe the worst division
in baseball.
Speaker 5 (20:52):
What's happened out here this year?
Speaker 9 (20:54):
You think?
Speaker 1 (20:55):
Yeah, it really makes no sense, right, I mean, offense
always seems to be the big issue in seat battle,
and it's been that way it feels like forever, uh
in the stadium, and and they just can't seem to
get consistent offensive production going. Uh. The pitching, you know,
has been better this year than last year, even although
we've had some guys have have had some have been
dinged up a little bit and haven't quite dound themselves,
(21:16):
but uh, it still makes it think that they can
make a run. But it's just so interesting how the
Blue Jays and the Mariners, the two teams that I
think just about everybody thought would have the best shot
at going back and going to a World Series and
and you know winning the al Pennant uh have struggled
and they've it's you know, sort of the hangover from
last year that they can't get things going. Uh, there's
(21:38):
no real traction. Uh, there's no real obvious explanation. Some
days guys hit, some don't. For the Blue Jays, it's
obvious it's vladimirk Grow junior and there I mean, you know,
I mean Julio has been not quite had the second
half yet, but I mean it's we're just getting into
it where he normally turns it on. But cal Raley
hasn't been cal Raley.

The overall production or rose Rain has been really good,
but nobody else is really contributed to young guys that
think are gonna be good players. But there's some growth
there for them still. So it's been a bizarre year
all around, particularly in the American League and there's so
much parody and so much disappointment the way teams have played,
and we saw how everybody interpreted who they are a
(22:18):
bit differently at the trade deadline. Teams with you know,
similar standings and records, some sellers, some were buyers, some
stood pat and there was no real rhyme or reason
to it for any one team.
Speaker 3 (22:30):
Well, Steve Phillips with us and Steve I was a
huge critic of the piggyback and the six man rotation
here in Seattle. I wonder what your thoughts were on that,
on that kind of outside the box idea by the
Mariners and how they handled that conundrum here this year.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
Yeah, you know, I think that there's a number of
different ways you can do it, and I've seen it
handled in different ways. Like I would have been okay
with a six man rotation.
Speaker 7 (22:55):
And.

I think that that players probably prefer that too. None
of them really want on a committed relief in a situation,
especially if you're a veteran guy who's been around for
a long time and signed as a starter. You don't
want to be the back end of the piggyback on that.
But I think that that to me, that's kind of
excuse making for players in the end, if you don't
like it, pitch better put yourself in a position where
(23:17):
you're the guy that they have to give the ball
to for seven innings and not the guy to be
part of the piggyback. And so, you know, I think
that that you know, it's it should not have been
the reason that there have been struggled. There shouldn't have
been that much of an issue.
Speaker 5 (23:31):
Uh.

And when you're a team player, you do what you
are asked to do, and you do it with a
smile on your face even if you're not liking it,
because you know, the reality is every player during the
course of the season does something selfish. Everybody. Relievers are
mad they're being overworked. They're mad they're being underwork. Guys
are mad they're not in the lineup. They were not
communicated that they're getting a day off. There. They need
(23:53):
a day off, but the manager doesn't want to give
them one. They're getting pinch hit for there. You know,
they're they're being pinch run for there. There's everybody's got
some thing that they're selfish about during the year, and
how that gets managed in the clubhouse impacts the chemistry
and the energy of that team. And you know what
the total impact was of the way the players reacted
(24:14):
to that issue. They made it bigger than it should
have been, and it could impact others. But ultimately, you know,
I think oftentimes hitting is contagious. That part has certainly
been leading this team down the wrong path offensively.

Well, let's get your thoughts, Steve, Steve Phillips with us
on the air. What the ms of the deadline? You know,
Bill Krueger, the former crafty left handed pitcher of the Mariners,
does a weekly show with us, and he was on
the air with us yesterday and he called the Castillo
deal a massive win because he was surprised that Jerry
was able to get anybody to take all of Castillo's
contract for next year. They got Sir Anthony Dominguez the reliever,
(24:50):
a couple of our players, but Castillo's contract is off
the books, and then Taylor Ward from Baltimore in exchange
for Alex Hoppey and a couple of minor leaguers in
war is in the lineup tonight, by the way at
DH with Donovan Back playing third.
Speaker 5 (25:04):
So give us your thoughts on what Jerry did at
the deadline.
Speaker 1 (25:08):
Yeah, I think that getting anybody to take the Castile
money was genius. Like, I honestly have no idea what
the White Sox were thinking with that. I mean, if
they've been watching, they realize and just look at some
of the analytics and the metrics of his pitches. They
don't move the same, they don't break the same, they
don't have the vertical the same, and they don't the
(25:29):
hitters don't react to them the same as they used to.
And so I was surprised. And you know, the vesting
option for twenty twenty eight. You know, the thing to
keep in mind for that is if there's a work
stoppeds and we lose some part of the season next year,
they then pro rate the vesting option. And you know,
it's much easier to stay healthy for sixty games or
(25:50):
eighty games than it is one hundred and sixty two games,
and that may vest the next year. And so, like
I don't understand it at all. My guess is they
would have taken some of the money on it. And
if they had asked properly, I think you could have
gotten the Mariners to pick up some of the money
just to clear the majority of it off the books,
and the other part of it is Boston Smith, the
(26:12):
one player that got back in return. I mean, Sar
Anthony Demingus is what he is. He needs to throw
more strike. He always needed to throw more strike. And
Nolan Jones is, you know, the guy who's bounced around.
But Boston Smith is a legitimate player like this dude
can hit. And so I was shocked that in addition
to taking the money, that the White Sox also gave
(26:33):
up a player of some stuff substance in the deal.
So I thought that was a big win. And Taylor Ward,
you know, it's so odd. He was a thirty seven
homer guy in twenty twenty five and this year he's
an on base percentage guy. It's like he decided to
change who he was as a hitter. And you know,
he's got a great on base percentage, but he's slugging
less than his on base percentage this year, and maybe
(26:53):
that's okay that you know, not many hitters slugged the
way they normally do anyways in Seattle. So if you're
able to get on bank, that might be exactly what
they need for this offense.
Speaker 3 (27:03):
Yeah, Steve Phillips with us and Steve before you go,
I gotta ask you, what do you make of all
the Dodger hate towards that organization after they landed Trek
Scuobel for really not a lot, by the way, in
a trade with the Tigers.
Speaker 1 (27:18):
Yeah, so it's interesting. Zaire Hope's going to be a
thirty homer twenty five, stole the base guy, the lead
prospect in the deal. He's great. He just happened to
be their fifth best prospect because they're loaded with talent.
They have four other guys just like him, so that
didn't hurt them. River Ryan is twenty seven year old prospect,
and how many times do we see a twenty seven
year old prospect? You know, he had injury mister year
(27:40):
with Tommy John, but he didn't The Dodger didn't gee
him worthy of pitting him in the big leagues for
them at all this year. But if he turns out
to be a good picture, and Detroit liked him better
than they liked Emmitt Shean, and so if he turned
if they're right and he turns out to be a
good picture, and Zayer Hope turns out to be an
all star, which I think he can be then they
(28:01):
did okay in the deal, and the third picture has
got a chance to be a more than serviceable Bajor
League pictures. So I'm with you. I thought it was
a little underwhelming. I would have you know. They they're
sort of scoffing at this. Scott Harris is their general
manager and president, big Coo operations that people don't know
what they're talking about. It a deal like this with
the with a superstar player. You know you don't prolong.
(28:22):
I'm like, no, you control the time, you control the
market when you've got that guy. And I would have
waited till Monday morning, like when they got the offer
on Saturday, I would have let the Dodgers sit without
any conversation whatsoever on Sunday, nothing darkness and no sound whatsoever,
and then go back and said, listen, I've had a
lot of conversations yesterday. I know you think this is
(28:44):
where you want to go with it, but I'm getting
so much play right now. And then I would ask
my assistants interrupt me and say, oh wait, hold on,
Matt Arnold the phone, let me call you back, and
then I'd get back on the phone later with him
on Monday and start talking, and I'd say, hold on
a minute, Eric Eander the gym for the raises on
the phone, I might call you and I would have
squeezed him a little bit more for it. At the
very least, you could have gotten Eric Lauer back, who
(29:06):
they picked up from the Blue Jays, and it would
let you keep competing this year. You know, they don't
have a spot for Eric Lawer now, so I don't
think they you know, they might not have gotten more.
I think they could have, but in the end, if
Ryan turned out a good player, then made a good deal.

Yeah, yeah, Steve, wrap it up with this. Steve Phillips,
former Mets GM with us on the air and you
mentioned the impending workstopings. You know, Scott Boris was on
the air with us about a week and a half ago.
He was in town with the obviously you know Kate
Anderson's story of the Randy Arisa Randy Rose Arena story.
Mariners drafted one of his clients and signed him, obviously,
(29:43):
So he was in town and we asked about a
salary cap and his answer was exactly what you would expect.
It was kind of along the my dead body, you know,
type of thing. There's no way he would ever endorse it,
And you get the feeling that the players would the
last thing they would ever endorse as a salary cap.
How concerned are you that we are heading for a
prolonged workstop and win this season's over.
Speaker 1 (30:05):
Yeah, I still think cooler heads are going to prevail.
Speaker 5 (30:07):
I do.
Speaker 1 (30:08):
I think that there's a way to get to what
each side wants without calling it a salary cap. We
already have a competitive balance tax for our sould at
the top. If you make the punishments for that extreme,
like like draconian extreme, like nobody would do it, then
you effectively have a salary cap without calling it that.
And then we're talking about you know, the player's proposal
(30:30):
was put a little bit of a penalty at the
bottom for teams that don't spend the floor. You know,
we're not going to call it the floor. They just
you know, there's there's a competitive balance level that teams
have to go to to compete, and if you don't
do it, make it an extreme penalty for that too.
And therefore you can have the tax at the top
the tax at the bottom. They can both serve as
(30:52):
a salary cap, and nobody has to call it that,
and I think there's a way to arrive at some
structure that both agree to that serves the purpose of
what both the players and the owners want to accomplish.

Yeah, Steve, great stuff. Let's just make a deal if
them has ever made the World Series. You come back

of resistance in recent years. The Seahawks attitude is we're
proud of how we do things and we want to
show everyone. So I guess it's easy to do.

It when you just won the Super Bowl.

You know, you really are the cream of the crop
right now. But I like the attitude. You know, if
you have to do it, you may as well accept
it and make the most out of it.

And that's easy to be what they're doing. Yeah, no doubt.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
Well, Mike, there's a lot of moves today a lot
of extensions in the NFL, and I don't know. Let's
start with Bijon Robinson just became the highest paid running
back in the history of the NFL three years, seventy
five million, fifty one million dollars guaranteed. We all know
that the highest paid guy is not always the best guy,
but it kind of feels, I think appropriate, that Bijon
Robinson is the highest paid running back in the NFL.
Speaker 8 (10:58):
Well, And what's ridiculous is how the running back markets
and the other back and the other markets at the
other positions factor into each other. Jackson Smith and jig
the highest paid receiver at forty two point one five million,
most objective individuals would say, I'd rather have the Jon
Robinson dollar for dollar than Jackson Smith and Jigba. And
(11:21):
the way this Robinson deal works, Yes, it's a three
year extension worth up to twenty five million a year.
The base value of the three new years is twenty
two point twenty five million. But when you add that
to the money that he was already due to make
over the next two years, and that gets folded into
a five year deal, the five year deal for the
(11:44):
Falcons is sixteen point three to six million per year.
Speaker 5 (11:48):
Which is a steal for how good he is.
Speaker 8 (11:51):
I think about the cash that some of the best
players in the NFL are getting, and Jon Robinson, who
Raheem Morris when he was coaching the Falcons last year,
said on multiple game it is the best player in
the entire NFL. He is getting peanuts in comparison. And
that's not a reflection on him, that's the reality of
the running back market. And so I thought that both
(12:13):
he and Jamiir Gibbs would be holding the line to
try to change the way running backs are paid. Jon
Robinson didn't. And now the question is how aggressive will
Jamiir Gibbs be in trying to to not just Outdojon
Robinson by a little bit, but by a lot. Because
(12:33):
it's not about the position, it's about what I mean
to the team. And you look at how the Lions
have reconfigured their offense. They got rid of David Montgomery.
They're they're gonna make Jamier Gibbs the workhorse. And you know,
for guys like Robinson Gibbs, you got one chance to
break the bank. This is it twenty four years old,
three years in full tread on the tires. Still, now's
(12:54):
the time to get paid. So I wasn't surprised that
Robinson did the deal, and I guess I'm not shocked
the deal isn't better than it could be, But man,
it's a bargain. You get a great running back like
that and you pay him top of the running back market,
You're getting a great player for a lot less than
other great players cost.

Yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
Mike Florio with US Pro Footballtalk dot Com usually with
us on Wednesdays, but we got the Hall of Fame
game coming up obviously, so mich will be a little
busy this week, Mike. He wrote about Aaron Donald at
PFT today trying to kind of increase his presence, grow
his brand a little bit. How much of him coming
back will be kind of maybe driven by that idea
(13:36):
to increase his Q rating a bit.
Speaker 5 (13:37):
If you will.
Speaker 8 (13:39):
Well, he's been out of the public eye for two years.
He worked the pregame show for Super Bowl sixty with NBC.
That was the first time we've seen him other than
just like workout videos on social media, but you know,
big platform stuff. He hasn't done much. So you come
back and you play another year for a team that's
gonna have seven primetime games and that is potentially going
(14:00):
to be playing standalone games in the postseason. It's a
hell of a way to make your your transition into
whatever it is he's thinking about doing by hiring the
firm that he's hired to help grow his profile away
from football. So it all kind of fits together now
and hey, to the extens that he wants to get
(14:21):
involved in media and entertainment, He's doing this thing the
right way. He's creating a lot of drama, and he's
teasing us, and he's taking his time, and man, it
just feels inevitable that he's gonna come back. I just
don't know when and how much you'll play once he's
back back on the field.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
Yeah, I was gonna say. I mean, if you had
to put money on this, you would say he's returning.
It's just a matter of when not if.
Speaker 8 (14:45):
Right, Well, he's doing everything he can to get himself
in a football shape, and it reminds me the old
Jerry Seinfeldt bit where he would talk about all these
people trying to get his shape, or are they getting
in shape for you know, most people are trying to
get any shape, are trying to get in shape for anything.
He's trying to get in football shape, well, so he
can say I'm in football shape or to play football.
I think he's going to come back, And the only
(15:05):
way he doesn't is if he is able to objectively
come to the conclusion that he's gonna fall short of
whatever standard he otherwise hopes to establish.
Speaker 5 (15:15):
And you're only going to.
Speaker 8 (15:16):
Find that out if you get out on the field.
That all this other stuff isn't going to tell him
how it's going to feel when he goes against players
who have been playing the last two years, whether in
the NFL or in college. And it reminds me of
when Lawrence Taylor retired. He went to Bill Parcells and
he said, man, these guys are these the young guyser fast?
And Parcels said to.
Speaker 5 (15:38):
Him, no, Lawrence, you're slow.
Speaker 8 (15:40):
You're not the guy you used to be. And And
how can Aaron Danal even begin to come to that
conclusion until he is competing full speed against the guys
who have been playing the last two years.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
Mike, you wrote about Micah Parsons too, I think on
the website about his injury, and uh, you know how
good he's going to be when he does come back.
I mean, I look, they gave up two first round
draft picks for him. You think the Packers are regretting
doing that? And how how effective do you think Mike
Parsons will be when he does come back coming off
the injury.
Speaker 8 (16:10):
Anytime you give up significant assets for a pass rusher,
for any player really, but especially the guy who is
in that pray where all sorts of things can happen
once the ball is snapped, you give up the assets,
you get a big contract. Part of the risk you're assuming,
and and you're assuming that risk away from him. This
is why the player tries to get paid. I want
(16:32):
the risk of injury to be on the team, not
on me. And so the Packers took on the risk
of injury. And now they've got the draft picks riding
on it, they've got the money riding on it. And
the smart play is to not rush anything and let him,
let him get healthy. And he said before this is
about being healthy later in the year, not to rush
(16:54):
back for you know, early season games, and he's talked
about maybe Week six against the Cowboys is the time
to come back. The only risks that you take by
waiting once you start losing games in September and October,
your windows starts to get pretty narrow, and there may
not be playoffs.

If you lose too many games before.

Michael Parsons is back on the field and back to
his usual workload.

I know, but here on a Tuesday before the Hall
of Fame game on Thursday in Canton, Carolina, Arizona. I
thought this was a joke when I first saw it,
but apparently it's not. That the Rams are gonna fly
into Australia the day before they're a game with the
Niners and fly out the day after. I mean, does
(17:42):
that sound like a good idea to you?
Speaker 8 (17:45):
Well, I mean there's different ways you can do these things,
and there's all sorts of advanced sports science, and you know,
I guess the idea is that the jet light doesn't
matter if you never change your clock, right, and you
go there and you go there on your terms, and
you go there on your clock, and you know it's
(18:06):
it's still going to be. What a night game East
Coast time, late afternoon game West Coast time, and you
just stick to that. Maybe that's their calculation for the
minimal disruption on the team. Get in, play the game,
get out. We've seen, you know, for a lot of
the London games. We've seen teams doing that in recent years.
But they come up with a plan, they believe in
(18:27):
the plan, they stick to the plan, and you know,
why go Why all the time you go there ahead
of time is valuable time where you could be in
your regular environment, working and being comfortable and being normal.
You know, I'd love to delay as long as possible,
winning trip I have to make. I love to be
home as long as I can, So they've got to
make the trip of the way. You may as well
(18:49):
keep it short. You can go to Australia on a
vacation after you retire.
Speaker 3 (18:52):
Yeah, you're not putting your neck on the line though,
right literally physically when you step out of your to
your you know, a place of work when you land

Well, thanks for doing this. I know you're busy, probably
getting phone calls right and left from producers all across
the world, So I appreciate you taking a few minutes
to jump on with us. Why don't we before we
kind of get into what the Mariners did here, Steven,
the deadline, sending Castillo to the White Sox, getting Taylor
Ward from Baltimore, give us your take on a Mariner
baseball team with Josh Naylor, Julio ky Roley, Randia Rose Arena,
(20:44):
all these great starting pitchers Andres Muno's being three games
under and struggling so mightily in maybe the worst division
in baseball.
Speaker 5 (20:52):
What's happened out here this year?
Speaker 9 (20:54):
You think?
Speaker 1 (20:55):
Yeah, it really makes no sense, right, I mean, offense
always seems to be the big issue in seat battle,
and it's been that way it feels like forever, uh
in the stadium, and and they just can't seem to
get consistent offensive production going. Uh. The pitching, you know,
has been better this year than last year, even although
we've had some guys have have had some have been
dinged up a little bit and haven't quite dound themselves,
(21:16):
but uh, it still makes it think that they can
make a run. But it's just so interesting how the
Blue Jays and the Mariners, the two teams that I
think just about everybody thought would have the best shot
at going back and going to a World Series and
and you know winning the al Pennant uh have struggled
and they've it's you know, sort of the hangover from
last year that they can't get things going. Uh, there's
(21:38):
no real traction. Uh, there's no real obvious explanation. Some
days guys hit, some don't. For the Blue Jays, it's
obvious it's vladimirk Grow junior and there I mean, you know,
I mean Julio has been not quite had the second
half yet, but I mean it's we're just getting into
it where he normally turns it on. But cal Raley
hasn't been cal Raley.
Speaker 5 (21:57):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (21:57):
The overall production or rose Rain has been really good,
but nobody else is really contributed to young guys that
think are gonna be good players. But there's some growth
there for them still. So it's been a bizarre year
all around, particularly in the American League and there's so
much parody and so much disappointment the way teams have played,
and we saw how everybody interpreted who they are a
(22:18):
bit differently at the trade deadline. Teams with you know,
similar standings and records, some sellers, some were buyers, some
stood pat and there was no real rhyme or reason
to it for any one team.
Speaker 3 (22:30):
Well, Steve Phillips with us and Steve I was a
huge critic of the piggyback and the six man rotation
here in Seattle. I wonder what your thoughts were on that,
on that kind of outside the box idea by the
Mariners and how they handled that conundrum here this year.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
Yeah, you know, I think that there's a number of
different ways you can do it, and I've seen it
handled in different ways. Like I would have been okay
with a six man rotation.
Speaker 7 (22:55):
And.
Speaker 1 (22:56):
I think that that players probably prefer that too. None
of them really want on a committed relief in a situation,
especially if you're a veteran guy who's been around for
a long time and signed as a starter. You don't
want to be the back end of the piggyback on that.
But I think that that to me, that's kind of
excuse making for players in the end, if you don't
like it, pitch better put yourself in a position where
(23:17):
you're the guy that they have to give the ball
to for seven innings and not the guy to be
part of the piggyback. And so, you know, I think
that that you know, it's it should not have been
the reason that there have been struggled. There shouldn't have
been that much of an issue.
Speaker 5 (23:31):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (23:31):
And when you're a team player, you do what you
are asked to do, and you do it with a
smile on your face even if you're not liking it,
because you know, the reality is every player during the
course of the season does something selfish. Everybody. Relievers are
mad they're being overworked. They're mad they're being underwork. Guys
are mad they're not in the lineup. They were not
communicated that they're getting a day off. There. They need
(23:53):
a day off, but the manager doesn't want to give
them one. They're getting pinch hit for there. You know,
they're they're being pinch run for there. There's everybody's got
some thing that they're selfish about during the year, and
how that gets managed in the clubhouse impacts the chemistry
and the energy of that team. And you know what
the total impact was of the way the players reacted
(24:14):
to that issue. They made it bigger than it should
have been, and it could impact others. But ultimately, you know,
I think oftentimes hitting is contagious. That part has certainly
been leading this team down the wrong path offensively.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
Well, let's get your thoughts, Steve, Steve Phillips with us
on the air. What the ms of the deadline? You know,
Bill Krueger, the former crafty left handed pitcher of the Mariners,
does a weekly show with us, and he was on
the air with us yesterday and he called the Castillo
deal a massive win because he was surprised that Jerry
was able to get anybody to take all of Castillo's
contract for next year. They got Sir Anthony Dominguez the reliever,
(24:50):
a couple of our players, but Castillo's contract is off
the books, and then Taylor Ward from Baltimore in exchange
for Alex Hoppey and a couple of minor leaguers in
war is in the lineup tonight, by the way at
DH with Donovan Back playing third.
Speaker 5 (25:04):
So give us your thoughts on what Jerry did at
the deadline.
Speaker 1 (25:08):
Yeah, I think that getting anybody to take the Castile
money was genius. Like, I honestly have no idea what
the White Sox were thinking with that. I mean, if
they've been watching, they realize and just look at some
of the analytics and the metrics of his pitches. They
don't move the same, they don't break the same, they
don't have the vertical the same, and they don't the
(25:29):
hitters don't react to them the same as they used to.
And so I was surprised. And you know, the vesting
option for twenty twenty eight. You know, the thing to
keep in mind for that is if there's a work
stoppeds and we lose some part of the season next year,
they then pro rate the vesting option. And you know,
it's much easier to stay healthy for sixty games or
(25:50):
eighty games than it is one hundred and sixty two games,
and that may vest the next year. And so, like
I don't understand it at all. My guess is they
would have taken some of the money on it. And
if they had asked properly, I think you could have
gotten the Mariners to pick up some of the money
just to clear the majority of it off the books,
and the other part of it is Boston Smith, the
(26:12):
one player that got back in return. I mean, Sar
Anthony Demingus is what he is. He needs to throw
more strike. He always needed to throw more strike. And
Nolan Jones is, you know, the guy who's bounced around.
But Boston Smith is a legitimate player like this dude
can hit. And so I was shocked that in addition
to taking the money, that the White Sox also gave
(26:33):
up a player of some stuff substance in the deal.
So I thought that was a big win. And Taylor Ward,
you know, it's so odd. He was a thirty seven
homer guy in twenty twenty five and this year he's
an on base percentage guy. It's like he decided to
change who he was as a hitter. And you know,
he's got a great on base percentage, but he's slugging
less than his on base percentage this year, and maybe
(26:53):
that's okay that you know, not many hitters slugged the
way they normally do anyways in Seattle. So if you're
able to get on bank, that might be exactly what
they need for this offense.
Speaker 3 (27:03):
Yeah, Steve Phillips with us and Steve before you go,
I gotta ask you, what do you make of all
the Dodger hate towards that organization after they landed Trek
Scuobel for really not a lot, by the way, in
a trade with the Tigers.
Speaker 1 (27:18):
Yeah, so it's interesting. Zaire Hope's going to be a
thirty homer twenty five, stole the base guy, the lead
prospect in the deal. He's great. He just happened to
be their fifth best prospect because they're loaded with talent.
They have four other guys just like him, so that
didn't hurt them. River Ryan is twenty seven year old prospect,
and how many times do we see a twenty seven
year old prospect? You know, he had injury mister year
(27:40):
with Tommy John, but he didn't The Dodger didn't gee
him worthy of pitting him in the big leagues for
them at all this year. But if he turns out
to be a good picture, and Detroit liked him better
than they liked Emmitt Shean, and so if he turned
if they're right and he turns out to be a
good picture, and Zayer Hope turns out to be an
all star, which I think he can be then they
(28:01):
did okay in the deal, and the third picture has
got a chance to be a more than serviceable Bajor
League pictures. So I'm with you. I thought it was
a little underwhelming. I would have you know. They they're
sort of scoffing at this. Scott Harris is their general
manager and president, big Coo operations that people don't know
what they're talking about. It a deal like this with
the with a superstar player. You know you don't prolong.
(28:22):
I'm like, no, you control the time, you control the
market when you've got that guy. And I would have
waited till Monday morning, like when they got the offer
on Saturday, I would have let the Dodgers sit without
any conversation whatsoever on Sunday, nothing darkness and no sound whatsoever,
and then go back and said, listen, I've had a
lot of conversations yesterday. I know you think this is
(28:44):
where you want to go with it, but I'm getting
so much play right now. And then I would ask
my assistants interrupt me and say, oh wait, hold on,
Matt Arnold the phone, let me call you back, and
then I'd get back on the phone later with him
on Monday and start talking, and I'd say, hold on
a minute, Eric Eander the gym for the raises on
the phone, I might call you and I would have
squeezed him a little bit more for it. At the
very least, you could have gotten Eric Lauer back, who
(29:06):
they picked up from the Blue Jays, and it would
let you keep competing this year. You know, they don't
have a spot for Eric Lawer now, so I don't
think they you know, they might not have gotten more.
I think they could have, but in the end, if
Ryan turned out a good player, then made a good deal.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
Yeah, yeah, Steve, wrap it up with this. Steve Phillips,
former Mets GM with us on the air and you
mentioned the impending workstopings. You know, Scott Boris was on
the air with us about a week and a half ago.
He was in town with the obviously you know Kate
Anderson's story of the Randy Arisa Randy Rose Arena story.
Mariners drafted one of his clients and signed him, obviously,
(29:43):
So he was in town and we asked about a
salary cap and his answer was exactly what you would expect.
It was kind of along the my dead body, you know,
type of thing. There's no way he would ever endorse it,
And you get the feeling that the players would the
last thing they would ever endorse as a salary cap.
How concerned are you that we are heading for a
prolonged workstop and win this season's over.
Speaker 1 (30:05):
Yeah, I still think cooler heads are going to prevail.
Speaker 5 (30:07):
I do.
Speaker 1 (30:08):
I think that there's a way to get to what
each side wants without calling it a salary cap. We
already have a competitive balance tax for our sould at
the top. If you make the punishments for that extreme,
like like draconian extreme, like nobody would do it, then
you effectively have a salary cap without calling it that.
And then we're talking about you know, the player's proposal
(30:30):
was put a little bit of a penalty at the
bottom for teams that don't spend the floor. You know,
we're not going to call it the floor. They just
you know, there's there's a competitive balance level that teams
have to go to to compete, and if you don't
do it, make it an extreme penalty for that too.
And therefore you can have the tax at the top
the tax at the bottom. They can both serve as
(30:52):
a salary cap, and nobody has to call it that,
and I think there's a way to arrive at some
structure that both agree to that serves the purpose of
what both the players and the owners want to accomplish.
Speaker 3 (31:06):
Yeah, Steve, great stuff. Let's just make a deal if
them has ever made the World Series. You come back
on the show, so I'll see you in twenty sixty.

I have no doubt that if they're healthy, they can
answer the call. My question is can we expect them
to be healthy come postseason time? And oh, by the way,
I didn't even bring up the fact that they're in
the same division. It's the reigning defending Super Bowl champions
Seattle Seahawks, who ain't going anywhere, and the Los Angeles Rams,
who are to favors. And not just because they got Garrett,

not just because I think that Amon Donald is coming back.
But you got not one but two Cats and McDuffie
and Watson from Kansas City.
Speaker 5 (33:48):
I mean, damn, I mean, and that's defense.
Speaker 9 (33:51):
Offensively, you see what they got and I'm looking at
them and I'm like this, you got Williams, you got
staff in the league MVP, you got Pooka Nakuwa, lod
of Mercy. I mean, I'm just looking around and I'm.

You got a good team, You're just in the wrong
damn division.

That's the problem I see.

Third place, I'm looking at some sports books where the
gap between the Rams and Seahawks is actually bigger Travis
than the gap between the Seahawks and forty nine Ers,
which I think says more to the hysteria right around
the Rams right now versus what people think of San Francisco.
But I mean, look, he's not, you know, really going
out on a limb. He's saying the team with the

most type in the NFL that went out and got
Miles Garrett over the offseason, the Super Bowl champions and
the Seahawks, who beat the Rams twice last year, are
our bigger favorites to win the NFC West than the
forty nine Ers. So I think sometimes Steven A. Travis
almost wants credit for the obvious point. But I do
think that he's right that the Niners just they were

way too banged up a year ago. They got d
BO back, obviously, they got to deal with that electrical substation.

Or the picture of their practice facility the other day
that came out on social media that electrical substation, Travis
is literally right next to the practice field.

I had no idea it was that close.

It's getting blasted with radiation during practice exactly exactly.

So there might be something to that, man, But I
don't know, dude. This is gonna be a freaking battle.
It's gonna be a war. I think the Niners will
stay in it until the end, like last year, but
I think eventually, I think all of us agree to
the Hawks and Rams will eventually run away.
Speaker 5 (35:31):

After arriving in La yesterday, Trek Scooball spoke about how
we doesn't blame the Dodgers for any moves they make
and doesn't agree with people who claim they're bad for baseball.
Speaker 6 (35:52):
I didn't get every team could trade for me, you know,
every team could make that acquisition. And yeah, I don't
really sympathize with people that blame the Dodgers for anything
they've done. You know, they've developed a really good organization.
They draft well, they acquire talent, really well, they retain talent.
It's a winning organization. Now the complaints seem to be
(36:14):
because they've won the last two World Series, you know that.
I don't think it was like that three years ago.
So I don't really sympathize with people that are complaining
because the Dodgers, you know, do all the right things.
Speaker 5 (36:25):
Well, I think he's a player.
Speaker 3 (36:26):
He wants to make as much money as possible, and
the Dodgers spend money more than anybody, So why would
he dislike the Dodgers? I mean, honestly, like, the Dodgers
are literally giving players like him an opportunity to make
an ungodly amount of money. So I, oh, by the way,
he plays for them now right, So I'd be very
surprised if Terrek Skublet Travis came out and criticized La.
(36:47):
But look, I get it, dude, I get all the
concern about, you know, a lack of a cap, how
much money the Dodgers are spending. But guys, the Mets
and the and the Yankees and the Red Sox and
the Blue Jays, there's a lot of teams out there
spending a lot of money, not all of them, none
of them. As a matter of fact, Travis are doing
what the Dodgers are doing. You got to give them
(37:08):
some credit for their baseball acumen at some point.
Speaker 5 (37:11):
This isn't just all about how much money they spend.
Speaker 8 (37:14):
No, no, And you know he's not gonna say if
even if he disagrees with what the Dodgers are doing, he's.
Speaker 3 (37:20):
Not gonna say, oh, yeah, yeah, this is bad for baseball.
Speaker 5 (37:24):
Yeah.

I know, I just got here. I know they just
traded for me. But you know what, this franchise sucks.
They're ruining the game. I don't want to be here.
