Hey, there's like forty points between Jared and Duran the

the ninety third versus the worst batting average of qualified

he's not even playing good defense. It's affected as defense.
It's affected as abs challenging, which he's been terrible at

great at it was the one redeeming quality that he had.
But he's not even good to that anymore. I mean,

York Mets probably have the worst team in the National League,
with the second highest payroll in the sport, and yet
who does everyone at MLB network say has the most
disappointing season this year?

So we were discussing earlier in the show about this
weekend and if it even matters, I mean, Softy's holding
out some hope Jackson are like, I'm moving on to
other things. So does this does this series even matter?

Well, yes, of course, if they sweep, they're completely back
in it sees and they can. They've beaten the Astros
seven out of eight games this year, so they're certainly
capable of it. And obviously you saw their pitching, and
they don't seem to be intimidated all by facing this
Astros team anymore, which I think once upon a time
they were. So yeah, it matters. I mean I'm on

the other side of the fence. I don't think it's
going to happen, but they certainly have a chance. I mean,
you sweep this weekend. You're within two with thirty seven
games to go. That is completely doable. Plus you've given
yourself all the momentum, real momentum, tangible momentum, not a
three run homer by Cole Young late, or a dom
Canzone three run homer late, or a brawl followed by

a Cold Emerson home run, you know, spark of momentum.
That's like real tangible momentum. We just took the soul
out of the team that was five games up on us,
and now we're just two games back. Now you only
win two out of three, and that's if you win
the series. You only gain one game out of that.
Not enough, and that's probably not enough. I said a

few times this morning, and I'm not sure one hundred
percent believe it, but we had the conversation andrews Hurst
and I this morning. Sweep or die? Is that what
this weekend is? Do you have to sweep the Astros
in order for this not to be over? That's probably

I really don't even want to think about it. It
would just be the most startling transformation in my eleven
years here for sure. I mean, like I said, this
is historic decline. This is not just one of the
great drop offs in baseball history. This might be the
greatest drop off from one season to the next in

should he just be benched this year at least for
a while? I don't think they would ever do that.
I think you're committed to him for this season. For
the start of next season. I mean, he'd have to
be doing this exact same thing next year, Like if

he gets up to two ten and can hit thirty homers,
and at least have that much confidence where his leadership
comes back, and his defense comes back, and his pitch
calling and his challenging all comes back. He brings enough
intangibles to the field that if he can just give
you back the defense and the handling of the pitching staff,

then he can be an asset to this baseball team.
But obviously we got the taste for sixty homers now,
like fifteen's not gonna cut it, So he'd have to.
I think he'd have to be as bad as he
is this year. And I just can't imagine he's going
to be hitting one fifty nine by on June first

next year. I just can't imagine it.

But you know, yeah, I never know anything's gonna happen.

I mean, you saw a one hundred out of one
hundred cal rally for a season, and you're seeing a
zero out of one hundred cal Rawley this year. I mean,
maybe it's not close to fifty next year, but it's
I mean, it's gotta be somewhere in the twenty thirty
forty versus zero. I would I would think Chuck Powells, well,
let's put it this.

Way, You're not gonna You're not gonna acquire a catcher
this offseason, right, No matter how bad he was this year,
he's your guy going into next season. I'm sure no
one in the history of sports is gonna train like
Cayl Rawley's gonna train this offseason. Probably we wrourk his
body a little bit, see a shrink. Probably go see
a shrink. Maybe get a you know, a different girlfriend,

chuck man. I know he's been put on the injured list,
but let's face it, Colt Emerson was demoted.

think is all wrong by so many people. There is
no extreme reaction to this. A rookie shortstop who basically
just reached puberty, who has all the ability to be

have visions of trying to track down the Houston Astros,
you couldn't continue with cold Emerson playing shortstop. But the
idea that this is going to destroy his confidence, no way.
This is a very mature young player. And what we're
going to see next year is what Cole Young did
this year from a year ago. Remember Cole Young was

not on our playoff.

He played so bad down the stretch that they couldn't
play him in the playoffs. And look what he's done
this year. Well, I think cold Emerson is going to

mature from it, a little physical maturity, and he's going
to be fine. I also don't think I mean I

I did the Rainiers game when he played here on
a Friday and got called up that weekend. I'll just
tell you as I was driving away, because that was
my first chance to see cold Emerson play nine games.

And yet JP Crawford's defense was so bad, and it
was bad. Don't let the Mariners fool you. It was terrible.

Abrams was like the only shortstop in the sport whose
metrics were worse than JP Crawford's as a defensive shortstop range,
lack of arm strength, and cold Emerson did bring that
to the table for a while. He had upgraded our
shortstop position. But he's a rookie. I mean, Mike Trout
struggled his rookie year. Not everybody's Ken Griffy Jr. And

even he didn't hit the ground running as you remember
as a rookie. So it's the right move to take
him down. He's not playing well on either side of
the ball. His confidence is shot, the league's adjusted to him,
they're toying with him at this point, and he needs
a break from it all and to reboot a little

bit in the meantime. Another reason that you couldn't make
this move earlier. Who else is gonna play shortstop?

I mean Leo Rebos on Colt Emerson's worst day this year,
he was ten times better than.

Leo Revos's pregnancy.

And then the other option is Rock Roden, who they're
calling up. And he's a feisty I heard your interview
with Ryan Bliss. That's how I describe him. He's a
dirt bag. He's a feisty guy. They'll probably put the
ball in play a little bit more, but he's not
gonna go up and save the day for us. But
right now, it was better for the team and better

for Colt to not let him suffer and agonize and
fail at baseball for the first time his entire life
at the major league level. He needed to be replaced,
and that's the move.

Wilson at third. So now if Weeken second and third,

to give Cole Young the nod over Brock Roden, so
I'm at least want to feel good about second base
and feel better about third base and will make things work.

as well. So kind of when you put all those
things together, it felt like it was a good opportunity

Well, the timetable right now is being worked out, so's
he's visited to my to my understanding, he's visited quite
a few teams, eight plus maybe ten plus teams. So

him to come in. But we have an agreement with him,

We'll see. But I just really don't know what, you know,
how we're going to do it.

What you learn about the legal process might just make
think now is the time to sign him and they'll
be available to play.

is that he has he's a there's an availability if
if the league lets.

So in terms of when that happens and how that

like what the facts of the case, all those things

understand that there's a process of play and we're gonna

feel comfortable they need could sign up?

Well, for us to comment on that right now is

I don't agree with the high risk, high reward portion
of this whole thing. Uh, he's gonna have to come

in here, he's gonna have to earn a spot behind
guys like Iggy and pritch It. By the way, they're
not gonna pay him a lot of money. Dick you
wouldn't think they're gonna pay him a lot of money.
And if things get sideways with him in his legal situation,
then you just say goodbye.

So I don't see them allowing this to get to
a point where it f's up their culture. I think

he did off the field, which is a big deal,
and I want to just pooh poo that. But from

him at A recruited him in Alabama. I've got Jalen Milroe,
who can say Scott nothing, but yeah, who can Jalen
Milroe says nothing about great things about this guy. He
wasn't a problem in the Lions locker room, so like,
why should it be a problem in the Seahawks locker
U I don't think he will be. My take is,

what is the worst possible scenario for the football team.
He comes in, he comes in he's a bad player
slash bad dude.

And he's gone. That's the worst case scenario, and long
term it doesn't.

This is not like Percy Harvin when you gave Percy

were committing huge dollars to him and draft capital to
get Terry on Arnold, then I would say, all right,
that's probably way too big of a risk, way too

I think it's the exact opposite. I would never say

The guy's gonna be buried in the depth chart when
he shows up here. He's gonna have to show he
deserves to play. He's gonna have to behave himself, he's
gonna have to stay out of trouble, all that stuff.

I mean, Actually, if you're worried about a guy being
a malcontent and being you know, a bad egg, for example,
on or off the field, This might be the best
time to get him.

we have an agreement. We don't know when he was

ends up starting for you, and he ends up playing
a big role in your defense and he's out and

Or if you're counting on him for a big role
and he ends up filling a big role and then
all of a sudden you lose the guy. That is
a slight concern, But I would hope that at that
point in time, this thing's been resolved with him off

Don't ever want to lose guys that I'm all of
a sudden counting on, you know, like, man, you know
we weren't really gonna count on you, and now we are,

think of an analogy or an example of where something
like that happened in Seattle. I'm sure there's something, if

in it sees and they can. They've beaten the Astros
seven out of eight games this year, so they're certainly

they were. So yeah, it matters. I mean I'm on

going to happen, but they certainly have a chance. I mean,
you sweep this weekend. You're within two with thirty seven

out of the team that was five games up on us,

should he just be benched this year at least for

I think you're committed to him for this season. For

and at least have that much confidence where his leadership
comes back, and his defense comes back, and his pitch
calling and his challenging all comes back. He brings enough
intangibles to the field that if he can just give
you back the defense and the handling of the pitching staff,

then he can be an asset to this baseball team.
But obviously we got the taste for sixty homers now,
like fifteen's not gonna cut it, So he'd have to.
I think he'd have to be as bad as he
is this year. And I just can't imagine he's going
to be hitting one fifty nine by on June first

have visions of trying to track down the Houston Astros,
you couldn't continue with cold Emerson playing shortstop. But the
idea that this is going to destroy his confidence, no way.
This is a very mature young player. And what we're
going to see next year is what Cole Young did
this year from a year ago. Remember Cole Young was

as a rookie. So it's the right move to take
him down. He's not playing well on either side of

they're toying with him at this point, and he needs
a break from it all and to reboot a little

bit in the meantime. Another reason that you couldn't make
this move earlier. Who else is gonna play shortstop?

gonna go up and save the day for us. But
right now, it was better for the team and better

for Colt to not let him suffer and agonize and
fail at baseball for the first time his entire life

to give Cole Young the nod over Brock Roden, so
I'm at least want to feel good about second base

How crazy this year is. So we add ref Sneyder
in the off season. His one niche is to hit lefties.

had four times. We just traded for Taylor Ward, who

He has not walked since he's been with us, and
I don't. I don't see Taylor Ward chasing pitches. I
don't see him being reckless at the plate. Since Taylor

that that you get the league's leader in walks? He

was the leagus leaguer in walks one day and then
the next day can't get a walk for a week
and a half. Do you explain some of them? I mean,

well that's baseball, but it's true. It's just a weird thing.
And then this season for the Mariners has just taken

the cake. I mean, it's hard to explain it all.
I don't think that they have any choice but to
count on cal Rawley bouncing back, Josh Naylor bouncing back,
and there's a good chance I think that they will.

Players since last season? I have a hard time believing that.

Yeah, maybe that is what happened and we don't even

many guys as you want. September, right, you'll get what

what you got five weeks five weeks left in the

and Arnold. Uh, the Seahawks have they officially signed him?

I have not seen an official announcement.

So this is a little unique right in that Mike
McDonald's talking about a guy that they haven't even signed yet.
How often does that happen there's no contract yet, that's
a good question. This isn't official, but they're still talking
about it. Here's Mike McDonald on the Terry and Arnold situation.

I think it was an opportunity to bring on a
player that we felt strongly about during the draft process,
and we also understand that it's a serious situation with
a legal matter that's you know, there's a process behind it,
so we respect that and that's how we'll operate too,
and just letting that process play out and let the

league decide if and when, you know, his return to
play is a more just kind of.

Understand that that's at play, but there's also an.

Opportunity to bring him in and give Hi an opportunity

throughout the process, and I reference to the folks that

we're not going to ignore those folks that we that
we really respect and have a strong opinion about it
as well. So kind of when you put all those
things together, it felt like it was a good opportunity

Would he be here, but when he would, he'll be

Well, the timetable right now is being worked out, so's
he's visited to my to my understanding, he's visited quite
a few teams, eight plus maybe ten plus teams. So
we're working through that on when's the best time for
him to come in. But we have an agreement with him,
and uh.

We'll see. But I just really don't know what, you know,
how we're going to do it.

What you learn about the legal process might just make
think now is the time to sign him and they'll
be available to play.

And I I'm I do not have like the specifics
on the dates and things like that. All I know
is that he has he's a there's an availability if
if the league lets.

Him happen that he can play.

So in terms of when that happens and how that
goes down, it's just kind of to me, it's like
it's just it's part of that process, you know, So
like what the facts of the case, all those things
about the comments of what happened, it's it's not, uh,
it's not our responsibility to have a comment on that,
nor can we. So I think we just have to
understand that there's a process of play and we're gonna

let it play out.

How much did you look into the criminal allegations to
feel comfortable they need could sign up?
Speaker 7 (25:27):
Well, for us to comment on that right now is
not our place, nor should we. So again, it's a
it's a serious situation.

We understand that. But to make any comment further.

Is is uh not the not the time or place
right now.

Yeah, I just don't know if I've heard them talk
like that about a player that technically hasn't signed a
contract yet, right which is I'm fine with that.

I'm not saying it's bad.

I mean, it's just unique, I guess, you know, for
them from a pr perspective to do that. But yeah,
I mean it's obviously out there. You know, he's he's
saying they have an agreement with him and all that,
and you know, look, I mean, I I don't have
any problem with this. I understand why some people would.
I don't agree with the high risk, high reward portion
of this whole thing. Uh, he's gonna have to come

in here, he's gonna have to earn a spot behind
guys like Iggy and pritch It. By the way, they're
not gonna pay him a lot of money. Dick you
wouldn't think they're gonna pay him a lot of money.
And if things get sideways with him in his legal situation,
then you just say goodbye.

So I don't see them allowing this to get to
a point where it f's up their culture. I think
that's been a lot of people's take that this is
a tight knit locker room, a great culture.
Speaker 2 (26:36):
Why would you want to bring in this guy to
mess with that?

I mean, look, I understand there's the accusation about what
he did off the field, which is a big deal,
and I want to just pooh poo that. But from
a locker room perspective, is this a bad guy?
Speaker 4 (26:48):
Is cancer locker They've got assistant coaches that worked with
him at A recruited him in Alabama. I've got Jalen Milroe,
who can say Scott nothing, but yeah, who can Jalen
Milroe says nothing about great things about this guy. He
wasn't a problem in the Lions locker room, so like,
why should it be a problem in the Seahawks locker
U I don't think he will be. My take is,
(27:11):
what is the worst possible scenario for the football team.
He comes in, he comes in he's a bad player
slash bad dude.
Speaker 5 (27:21):
And he's gone. That's the worst case scenario, and long
term it doesn't.
Speaker 1 (27:28):
I don't think it does. You're not giving him a contract.
This is not like Percy Harvin when you gave Percy
Harvin a bunch of money, traded some first round draft picks,
and the guy was a sugar Nuh right, I mean
that's not what we're talking about, right that, that's not
what that is at all. I mean, if if they
were committing huge dollars to him and draft capital to
get Terry on Arnold, then I would say, all right,
that's probably way too big of a risk, way too
(27:50):
big of a risk. I think it's low risk, high reward.
I think it's the exact opposite. I would never say
high risk high reward. I think it's low risk, high reward.
The guy's gonna be buried in the depth chart when
he shows up here. He's gonna have to show he
deserves to play. He's gonna have to behave himself, he's
gonna have to stay out of trouble, all that stuff.
(28:11):
I mean, Actually, if you're worried about a guy being
a malcontent and being you know, a bad egg, for example,
on or off the field, This might be the best
time to get him.
Speaker 5 (28:21):
M hmm. Literally, was was there any when he said that?
Speaker 4 (28:25):
You know, he's been talked to eight to ten teams, right,
we have an agreement. We don't know when he was
gonna sign. Was there any of you that was like, man,
do you think he's gonna get stolen by somebody else
and he'll back off the agreement with the Seahawks.
Speaker 1 (28:38):
I'm gonna tell he signs a deal. It's possible. I mean,
there's I don't think so.
Speaker 2 (28:42):
I'm not worried about that, but it is possible.

There was just a little bit of me going, well,
what if what if some other team just came in
and said, you know what, we're gonna give you a
two year contract right now?
Speaker 1 (28:51):
Yeah, you know what, and Dick, if that happens, okay whatever.

Yeah, it's like not like demand. He doesn't mean that
signed yet.

I'm not gonna write I'm not gonna I'm not gonna
worry about losing the guy. I mean, you know, I
think the Hawks are gonna be just fine without him.
I think they'll be just fine with him. I mean,
I just you know, could he come in and give
him a little bit of an edge at corner? Uh
maybe when they play the Rams and you know, teams
like that. Yeah, But I mean to me, it's it's
kind of a nothing burger as far as a risk

is concerned. I don't understand why somebody would sit around
and say this is a huge Like I even saw
Chase Daniel tweeted that out. This is a high risk.
High what's the risk?

Honestly? Like, what is.

The from a tangible perspective? I mean, I don't know, Jackson.
You want to play the other side here, you want
to play the contrarian from a tangible perspective, what is
the risk?

What is the resk Let's let's let's let's just throw
this out there, right, is that he signs with the
Seahawks and he's doing well and something with the case
gets brought up or something happens and he ends up
being a total negative.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
And that's the concern, that's the consent.

The concern is that he comes to Seattle and he
ends up starting for you, and he ends up playing
a big role in your defense and he's out and
then all of a sudden, all of a sudden, he's
got to go right.

Styt he's helping your team win.
Speaker 1 (30:15):
Or if you're counting on him for a big role
and he ends up filling a big role and then
all of a sudden you lose the guy. That is
a slight concern, But I would hope that at that
point in time, this thing's been resolved with him off
the field.

So I don't I.

Don't ever want to lose guys that I'm all of
a sudden counting on, you know, like, man, you know
we weren't really gonna count on you, and now we are,
and now you've got to leave the team. That sucks
because the guy behind you is all pissed off and
butt hurt, and you know we've been running our defense
a certain way and now we can't. I'm trying to
think of an analogy or an example of where something
like that happened in Seattle. I'm sure there's something, if
we put our brains together, that would be the one concern, Jackson.

And if this guy ends up coming in here kicking
ass for you and then all of a sudden he's
got to leave, right But I don't know, man, I mean,
can he help you win games in the interim, Yeah, probably.
Is he that great a corner? Is he worth all
this hubbub?
