Speaker 1 (00:02):
Petros will join us at 4.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
He's very sensitive, by the way, right now regarding the
San Jose State crowd at the Coliseum over the weekend.

Speaker 3 (00:09):
Sensitive? Oh, yeah.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Him and Seth Davis going after each other on social media.
We'll be bringing that up on the air at 4
o'clock today. Petros will join us at 4. Larry Stone
will join us at 5. We'll go over this week's
Hard Knocks episode at 6, which, by the way, I
have not seen yet.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Have you? I saw it last night.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Seen Hard Knocks? Have you seen the Hard Knocks? Okay, good.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Kind of continues the trend that we talked about already.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
No, I would say it definitely took an upswing. Upswing, good.
The final one was much better.

Speaker 4 (00:38):
Good.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
All right. Well, we'll talk about that coming up at
6 o'clock tonight. Mariners in Fenway Park right now against
the Boston Red Sox. We can chat about that when
the game comes to an end. The Apple Cup coming
up on Sunday. Ian and I were just talking off
the air about the Washington State game notes. This is
a nationally televised game, and they were not out yet,
by the way. Washington put their game notes out with

(01:00):
their depth chart on Monday, as is tradition. And we're
sitting here on a Wednesday at like 245, 250 in
the afternoon watching. And Wazoo had not yet put their
game notes out. They literally just came out like two
minutes ago, by the way. So they finally got it done,
gave us a depth chart, gave us some game notes
for their nationally televised game with the Dogs on Sunday.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
So we'll talk some Apple Cup.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
But, I mean, man, the big news in sports right
now is probably what's happening to the Clippers. Our old
buddy Steve Ballmer, who a lot of us were wondering
would he potentially be in the mix to buy the
Seahawks before they went to the Kosla family.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
Guilty. Guilty. I'm thinking about like in Superman.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
Guilty.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
Violating the salary cap circumvention rules when they signed Kawhi
Leonard back in 2022. They are forced to hand over
five first-round draft picks from 2029 to 2033. They're getting
fined $ 30 million. A bunch of people that work for
the Clippers are getting suspended. And Steve Ballmer, who, when

(02:00):
you think of Steve Ballmer as the owner of the Clippers,
what do you think of? Sitting there in a baseline,
jumping up and down, sweating his ass off, going bananas.
You won't see that the entire year because Steve Ballmer
has been suspended from all league and all team activities
for the entire year, all through the NBA season into
next year. Kawhi Leonard himself has to give $ 700, 000 back

(02:23):
to the NBA, which for him is probably a drop
in the bucket, but it's still $ 700, 000. And the thing
that struck me, Dick, is, I mean, look, who knows
how long they've been doing this for?

Speaker 3 (02:33):
The Clippers, right?

Speaker 2 (02:35):
They're cheating and they're not even winning, right? Like that's
the thing. And I know a lot of this has
nothing to do with Steve. It goes back to the
Don Sterling, Elgin Baylor days. They moved to LA in 1984,
which was 42 years ago.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
You know how many times they've made the conference finals?

Speaker 5 (02:54):
One.

Speaker 6 (02:55):
One time.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
That is, I mean, they are literally, they are the Mariners,
but worse of the NBA. At least the Mariners have,
you know, a handful of trips to the league championship series.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
They got nothing in.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
A league where everybody makes the playoffs almost every single year.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
It's unbelievable.

Speaker 7 (03:12):
Yeah, they were a very likable team when they were
Lob City. And they had Chris Paul and they had
Blake Griffin. They had DeAndre Jordan. That was a likable team.
They were battling with Golden State before Golden State became
Golden State.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
That was a really fun time.

Speaker 7 (03:24):
It's probably the only fun time to watch the Clippers
over the last 50 years. And then they decided, well,
Steve Ballmer decided that it's a good idea. To acquire
over the hill, Paul George, James Harden, Kawhi Leonard, and
sacrifice everything. Jackson, do you realize, I just told, told
us off to this off the air, this for acquiring

(03:44):
Kawhi Leonard, this punishment.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
I was just going to say.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
And what they got for what they had to trade
for Kawhi Leonard.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
List it.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
It has cost them Shea Gilgis Alexander.

Speaker 5 (03:54):
Right.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
And first round picks in 21, 22, 23, 24, 26, 29, 30, 31, 32,
and 33.

Speaker 4 (03:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
Unbelievable. Well, when you said that.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
They've had likable teams, Dick, I'm not talking about comparing
the Clippers to this year's Mariners team. I'm talking about
comparing the Clippers to the Mariners, period. Franchise. Like, they've
done less than the Mariners have. The Mariners are the
armpit of Major League Baseball. They are the dreck of baseball.
The Mariners have accomplished more. They've got four trips to
the league championship series, and the Clippers have won in

(04:27):
the same amount of time that the Mariners have been
doing this for. So, I mean, it's just incredible. I
don't know if it's a Laker thing. They can't compete
with the Lakers. I have no idea. Just bad ownership,
bad luck, whatever. But, my God, I mean, does this
change our mind at all on– on Steve Ballmer, right?
Like if one day, I don't know if the Mariners
ever came open for sale, I think I'd love to

(04:47):
have Steve Ballmer buy the team. The guy's worth like
a hundred zillion dollars and could spend whatever he wanted to.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
But I don't know.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
I mean, I guess there's a saying, if you ain't cheating,
you ain't trying, but can you cheat and maybe actually win.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
While you're at it? At least the Huskies won a
title when.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
They cheated back in 91.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
These guys haven't done jack squat.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
Well, I'm a cheating.

Speaker 7 (05:05):
The Huskies did, uh, compared to this. I mean, my goodness.
Imagine if this was the NFL. I mean, it's big
enough that it's the NBA, but imagine if it was
the 50,000 pound gorilla of the NFL and a team,
pick your team, the Cleveland Browns just lost first round
draft picks in five consecutive years.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
And their owner has been suspended for the entire year,
and their quarterback has to pay the league a million dollars,
and their GM just got suspended. I mean, imagine if,
let's just say this happened to the Seahawks, which would
never happen, but let's just live in that world for
a second. John Schneider suspended for a year, can't go
to games. Vinod Khosla. Can't go to games for a year.
Seahawks don't have first-round draft picks for a decade, right?

(05:51):
Darnold's got to give the league back $ 700, 000. And oh,
by the way, a bunch of staffers also got whacked
for a year, too. I mean, this would be unbelievable.
Shouldn't Ballmer just sell the team for like $ 900, 000?

Speaker 7 (06:00):
Nine billion dollars and make remember remember when he bought
the team he bought it for two billion and we
were like including me was like what are you doing
two billion dollars like twice as much as any nba
team had ever sold for now he could sell it
for nine even with all these penalties he could sell
it for nine.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
Well forbes's last valuation had him at 7.5 billion dollars
how long ago was that i think it was this
year when they came out with their uh their forecast
but I mean, look, man, that's exactly it, that when
he paid the money he paid for the team, a
lot of people, like you said, thought he was overpaying
for it. Well, all these things eventually are just going
to keep making money. So whether you jump in now,

(06:39):
you jump in later, you pay a little bit more now,
you're getting it all back.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
You're getting it all back and then some.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
And for a guy like Steve Ballmer, how much he
paid for the team probably is not of concern to
him for the most part. The guy has a definite
passion for basketball.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
We know that.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
He's been very influential, very involved in the high school scene,
as you know, Dick, in this area. He was really
a champion for the Sonics to return. And I think
that once the thing with the Maloof brothers and once
the Chris Hansen thing kind of fell apart, Ballmer just said, look, man,
I want the NBA back in Seattle, but I think
I want to be in the NBA more myself. He

(07:17):
tried to buy the Pistons, I think, a while back,
like a decade ago, whatever that was, and that didn't happen. So,
I mean, you're right. This is a massive, massive story.
It would be even bigger if it was in the
National Football League. But you think about, like, all the
downtrodden franchises, man, in professional sports and how they just
cannot get out of their own way. You could argue
the Clippers are the poster child. For all of that.

(07:38):
Because when you think of them, at least when I
think of them, I think of things like Billy Crystal
sitting courtside going bananas, you know, wanting to do something different.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
I'm not going to be Jack Nicholson going to Laker games.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
I want to be the.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
Guy rooting for the Clippers and they're the lovable losers
and blah, blah, blah.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
Like I said, it was cool for a while. They've
done nothing.

Speaker 3 (07:54):

Speaker 1 (07:55):
Pretty cool to be a Clipper fan.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
It's unbelievable how little that franchise has accomplished. So I
don't know, man. We'll chat about that. I'm sure at
some point, fun with audio, right? We're going to have
some sound from that. The other story today, Tiger Woods
is not going to drive for five years, which I
think is great.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
I think it's good for him. It's what had to happen.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
The fact that it took a judge to make it
happen and another DUI arrest to make it happen is unfortunate.
But the good news is, is that Tiger Woods, and
I mean this in all sincerity, Tiger Woods has a
chance to get himself cleaned up before he kills somebody.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
End of story.

Speaker 2 (08:30):
Because if he kept driving, this was bound to happen again,
that he was going to get into some kind of
an accident. He was going to hit somebody. He was
going to hurt himself or somebody else. So I'm actually
for Tiger Woods because I like Tiger Woods. I'm glad
that the judge is saving him from himself. And I
hope he gets himself cleaned up during these five years
and then finds a way to make sure that what

(08:51):
happened that was at Florida when he got pinched this
last time never happens again.

Speaker 7 (08:55):
It's amazing how much of a miracle it is that
Tiger Woods only hits inanimate objects in his car.

Speaker 3 (09:01):
I mean, it's unbelievable.

Speaker 7 (09:03):
Like he runs into road signs. He backs into trees.
He like he doesn't hit other people. But you're exactly right.
It was going to happen.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
At some point. Yeah, right. You imagine if his lawyer
said that to the judge? It's not that big a deal.

Speaker 1 (09:15):
He's just hitting trees. He's not hitting people, man.

Speaker 3 (09:17):
It's a miracle that he's just hitting trees.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
Because I think golf, I don't know about you guys,
I think golf is better off with Tiger Woods having
a presence in the game. I mean, there was a
rumor a while back that there were, was it, who
was the old head of the PGA Tour, the guy
that had, was it Fincham?

Speaker 3 (09:33):
Oh, Tim Fincham?

Speaker 2 (09:34):
Yeah, and there were people that were talking about the players.
Some of them wanted Tiger Woods to run the thing.
at some point and to take over. He's not going
to do it now, right? I mean, he's not in
any mental or physical shape to do anything.

Speaker 3 (09:46):
Like that right now. But he will be a captain
of the Ryder Cup team pretty soon.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
He will be, and he's going to be involved.

Speaker 2 (09:50):
And I think he's absolutely involved in that regard, and
the game of golf is better off with him in it.

Speaker 1 (09:55):
So we got that going on. Apple Cup is on Sunday.
I was listening to.

Speaker 3 (09:59):
M.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
Christo Bruce and Alex Brink when I was on the drive-in.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
Today talking about the Apple Cup, the importance of the
Apple Cup. And, you know, guys, I don't know, man.
I feel like the thing that's made the Apple Cup
great over the years and decades is that everything just
happened organically, right? And it stayed organic. Like, I said
this in cross-talk to Ian, and I'm sure you guys agree.
This studio... not just this one, but the old one

(10:25):
on the other side of our building, 351 Elliott, 190
Queen Anne. This time of the year, well, not this
time of the year, but before this game. Yeah, November usually.
There used to be a lot of anxiety in the building.
There used to be a lot of juice in the building.
It's hard for kids, Betts.

Speaker 3 (10:40):
Right?

Speaker 2 (10:40):
Oh, all kinds of stuff. Eating dog food, whatever, blah, blah, blah. But,
I mean, there was animosity. Like, we had people that
worked here that were coworkers who, That turned on each other, right?
I mean, there were fights in the office. People getting
shoved up against walls in the office. Everybody's on edge
in the office.

Speaker 3 (10:58):
Yeah, Chad Eaton against Softie.

Speaker 5 (11:00):
There was massive, massive amounts of anxiety.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
And that's gone. It's not here anymore. And we're just
not getting any of that from the other side. And
I don't even want to try to look for it
because it just sounds forced. Like if I walked up
to Schubert, who's a Coug fan, or Dave Pridemore, or
Ian Furness, I mean, some of these people you don't know,
like Furness, but if you walked up to these guys...

(11:24):
and you started like running your mouth, they would just
look at you and walk away.

Speaker 1 (11:28):
They'd just cry uncle.

Speaker 3 (11:29):
They'd just say, okay.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
And they would just turn around and walk down the
hall and there'd be no, and I don't like it.

Speaker 1 (11:33):
I don't like it.

Speaker 3 (11:34):
You can still find it on Twitter if you want.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
Yeah, you can.

Speaker 3 (11:36):
You can.

Speaker 7 (11:37):
And I kind of do just to kind of fire
me up before the game. It was there today. It
was there with the. stupid UW won't let the Wazoo
band come.

Speaker 5 (11:45):
It was there because of what the UW players said
earlier today.

Speaker 3 (11:48):
Like Alenius Davis? Can't wait to kill him, right?

Speaker 2 (11:52):
But that's stuff that happens all the time. I like
the fact that Jed is not curtailing any of that stuff.
There's a lot of coaches back in the day. Honestly,
Chris Peterson was one of them where he would not
want his guys talking before this game. He would not
trust 18-year-old kids to not pop off. I mean, Jim Lambright,
remember when he suspended Andre Deschishore? Andre Deschishore said nobody
goes to Pullman because it stinks, and so he suspended

(12:14):
him for the Apple Cup. This is Jim Lambright, right? Yeah,
I mean, one of the greatest lines of all time.
What's the greatest line of all time when it comes
to the Apple Cup?

Speaker 3 (12:22):
Don James.

Speaker 1 (12:22):
Don James. Don James, who was supposed.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
To be the epitome of class.

Speaker 3 (12:27):
Do you know this line, James?

Speaker 1 (12:28):
Don James.

Speaker 2 (12:29):
Don James, who is the guy who everybody aspires to be.

Speaker 1 (12:33):
Everybody looks up at the tower and they see. Unbelievable.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
This guy, all the prestige. And he's the one.

Speaker 1 (12:39):
Remind Jackson what he said.

Speaker 7 (12:40):
Jackson said being a cougar teaches you all about disappointment
in life.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
Something to that effect. He said it prepares you for life.
You learn not to expect too much.

Speaker 3 (12:49):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (12:50):
That's what Don James said. He's got the greatest line
of all time.

Speaker 3 (12:52):
The greatest line of all time.

Speaker 1 (12:53):
From 45, 50 years ago.

Speaker 7 (12:55):
And I think I can even paraphrase it like 40
years later. I'm a little bit, I'm kind of impressed
with there's room for that. And there's just none of it, right?

Speaker 2 (13:02):
Like even when the players, like there seems to be
more smack from the players than there is from fans.

Speaker 5 (13:07):
Has any WSU players spoken at all? Cause we obviously
got the Davis and all that. He can't wait to
kill him quote yesterday.

Speaker 4 (13:14):
Right.

Speaker 5 (13:14):
But if, I haven't seen anything, and that sparked a
lot of debate between fans on Twitter, but I haven't
seen anything from any WSU players, so it sort of
feels like the office thing, where Husky fans can say
these things, but.

Speaker 1 (13:27):
There's just no comeback anymore.

Speaker 3 (13:28):
There's nothing going on. Well, and it's because there's no
danger to say it. There's a time and a place.

Speaker 7 (13:34):
A long period of time in the place where the
Husky talent level and the Cougar talent level was at
least reasonably close to where if you fired up one
side enough, it might be enough to get them over
the top where it doesn't even matter anymore. Like you
can't fire up a 1A football team who's playing a
4A football team.

Speaker 3 (13:53):
It's just not going to work.

Speaker 2 (13:54):
It just feels like everyone just wants to take their
ball and just go home, right? Like there's more passion
and more enthusiasm for the game on the Huskies' side,
but there's not as much as there used to be.

Speaker 5 (14:06):
No.

Speaker 1 (14:06):
There's just not, right?

Speaker 2 (14:07):
I mean, again, we might be more fired up for
this than they are, but we're not as fired up
as we were two or three years ago. And it's
getting worse and worse and worse as the years go by.
But I'm way more fired up than I am for
the other preseason games. Well, of course, because they're playing nobody.
They're playing Utah State and Eastern.

Speaker 1 (14:22):
I mean, come on. Wait, wait, wait. This is basically
Eastern now.

Speaker 3 (14:26):
But is there a chance.

Speaker 7 (14:27):
That Utah State's a better team than what we're going
to play on Sunday?

Speaker 1 (14:30):
Yeah, potentially, but it's still Utah State, Dick.

Speaker 6 (14:32):
Right.

Speaker 1 (14:32):
I mean, come on. To say that you're more fired
up for Wazoo, you better be. Of course.

Speaker 2 (14:38):
Who the hell wakes up going, bring me Utah State.
I want those bastards.

Speaker 6 (14:41):
Well, right.

Speaker 1 (14:42):
But your whole.

Speaker 3 (14:42):
Premise was that there's not a lot of buzz.

Speaker 7 (14:44):
And I'm just saying, I'm more fired up for this
game than any other game on the schedule other than
like USC, Penn State, Indiana, and Oregon.

Speaker 2 (14:52):
This is like my fifth most fired up game. But
listen to what you just said. Your fifth most fired-up game. Normally,
it'd be right near the top. If it's in November,
and you're 9-1 or 9-2, and the Cougars are looking
to knock you out, like the 2016 game in Pullman
when they went to the Final Four. I mean, you
just said it yourself. It's my fifth most excited game

(15:13):
on the schedule. I mean, how many times have you
uttered those words about the Apple Cup? To the point
there of, like, there's no fear.

Speaker 5 (15:20):
Over the next 20 years, how many wins do we
think WSU will have over UW?

Speaker 4 (15:25):
Zero.

Speaker 6 (15:25):
One.

Speaker 3 (15:26):
Maybe one.

Speaker 1 (15:27):
I think it's one, maybe two.

Speaker 2 (15:29):
It would take a Jimmy Lake type thing where he
gets fired and an interim guy, massive injuries, whatever.

Speaker 5 (15:35):
This is a central Washington, eastern Washington type opponent now.
And the reality is like anything extra that we take
and put into this game is now we're just fabricated.

Speaker 3 (15:45):
That's what this is.

Speaker 7 (15:47):
And the reason I said zero is because I anticipate
over the next 20 years, the gap to get larger,
not smaller in talent. It's going to get larger in
talent as the Huskies become a full share member of
the big 10.

Speaker 3 (16:01):
It's going to get bigger.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
I think even the Oklahoma-Oklahoma State rivalry, which is now off,
which is, I think, the most lopsided rivalry in college
football history. Even the Cowboys get one every 20 years.
I think you would count on one every 20. But
the Cowboys are still a Big 12 team. Right, but
I'm saying that it was the most lopsided rivalry in
college football history, and they still found a way to

(16:24):
get one. If you're asking me to bet one or none,
I'm taking one. I'm taking one all day. If the
over-under is a half, give me the over. No, I
understand that.

Speaker 7 (16:33):
But you would agree that the talent between Oklahoma and
Oklahoma State over the last 50 years has been way
closer than the talent of Washington and Washington State over
the next 20.

Speaker 2 (16:41):
Of the next 20, yes, I would agree with that,
but I still think, again, I don't want to argue
about this because this is kind of ridiculous. I mean,
if you're going to tell me that you're going to
take zero, then you go do that, Dick. You take zero.

Speaker 1 (16:52):
I mean, my God, what are we doing here? See,
this is the thing.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
There's more juice with this conversation than there is with this.
there is with the actual Cougar fans. So I guess
the question is this, a four, nine, four, five, one,
do we want this to continue? Honestly, like dog fans,
Coug fans, whatever, four, nine, four, five, one Tacoma Dutch
text line. Do we want this thing to keep going?
There's only two more years left of it. Pat Jones
is going to join us on Friday's show, by the way,
at three o'clock. And we'll ask him like, does he

(17:16):
sense that there may not be an appetite across the
mountains to keep this thing going after the current contract
is over?

Speaker 1 (17:23):
Do you want to see it go? You want to
see it continue.

Speaker 3 (17:26):
49451.

Speaker 1 (17:27):
We'll get to that coming up. Fun with audio. Petros
at 4 on 93.3 KJR FM.

All right, we're back on a busy Wednesday afternoon right
here on 93.3 KJRFM.

Speaker 3 (18:02):
I'm looking for.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
The depth chart for the Apple Cup from a Cougar
perspective on Sunday. Just checking their game notes out. Don't
see it in the game notes. Probably buried somewhere. They
want their clicks, man. They want me to navigate their
website and find it. Because I'm looking at the Dawgs
depth chart. I know we got that in front of us.
And I saw a little tweet the other day. And
I don't know if this is true or not, by

(18:23):
the way, but it sounds true. And it sounds good,
so I'm going to roll with it, by the way,
because it makes the Huskies look good. That they've got
a top 10 heaviest offensive line and a top 10
heaviest defensive line overall. in college football. Cody Green, 315.
John Mills, 325. Cole Dietrich, 305. Champ Tala'ilala.

Speaker 3 (18:42):
I'm sorry.

Speaker 1 (18:42):
I am butchering his name. I have a problem.

Speaker 3 (18:45):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (18:46):
I have a problem. It's like a tick, by the way,
that I just cannot say his name.

Speaker 3 (18:50):
I did that with Bagnagni yesterday.

Speaker 6 (18:53):
No, no.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
Remember when Clayton, God bless him, may he rest in peace,
would always say Southern California? For some reason, I cannot
say Champ's last name. It's like I'm having like a
mini stroke or something on the ear. How do you
say his last name again?

Speaker 3 (19:08):
Tell Lele.

Speaker 2 (19:09):
Todd Lea Lea at right guard at 340 playing right
guard and drew as a party at 325 playing right tackle.
My point is I would like to compare that to
the height and weight of the Cougar defensive front, because
that's one of the first things I like to do
in a game like this. I mean, really any game
is just compare how big the guys are. How big

(19:29):
are our guys? How big are our Jimmies and Joes,
as Coach Baird would say, versus their Jimmies and Joes?
So I want to find a Cougar depth chart, Dick,
because I assume that there is a big difference between
how big the dog offensive line is and how big
the Cougar defensive line is.

Speaker 7 (19:42):
Yeah, I think, who did we talk to yesterday that
said it was in the 250s and 260s, the Cougar
defensive line.

Speaker 3 (19:47):
But you look at the depth of the Husky offense.

Speaker 5 (19:50):
Line. Right.

Speaker 7 (19:50):
And right now, the backups, Foss, Solo, Hatchet, Harris, you know,
not eldridge but uh justin uh what how do you
pronounce his name hill kimma.

Speaker 2 (20:01):
Yes i believe so don't ask me i can't pronounce
champ's name those guys.

Speaker 7 (20:05):
The backups 320 340 310 310 320 right i mean
you got 10 guys at 310 plus on this offensive
line how far a cry was that from two years
ago when we were just trying to find five offensive
linemen in the school Well.

Speaker 2 (20:19):
You've got a situation where you, Dub, where I think
you spend the first three games of the season trying
to figure out who your running backs are, who your
wide receivers are. You want to figure out as well
what you can get from DCB and Ramzak Fruin.

Speaker 1 (20:33):
I mean, Cody Mills is going to be your left tackle.

Speaker 2 (20:36):
And the more and more I hear about Cody Mills,
or Cody Green, sorry, the more and more I feel
good about him playing that spot the entire year. One
of the points, I think it was Greg brought it
up on the show earlier, going down there to Matter
Day for a couple years, playing the talent they've.

Speaker 1 (20:49):
Got down there.

Speaker 2 (20:50):
No disrespect to the guys that he would have gone
up against at Eastside Catholic, but it's just different. Different
talent down there when you're playing in that league in California.
So I think Cody Green's going to be fine. He's
only going to get bigger. He's going to get stronger.
He's 6'6, 315. He's 18 years old. Derek Coleman-Brusaw is 6'5, 295.
He's 18 years old. Ramzak Fruin is 6'5, 235. He's

(21:12):
18 years old. I mean, it's ridiculous. And you hope
if you play your cards right that you got these
guys for three years, all of.

Speaker 3 (21:19):
Them, hopefully.

Speaker 7 (21:20):
Would you be surprised if both the Huskies starting left
tackle and left guard are both first-round draft picks at
some point?

Speaker 1 (21:27):
No, I would not.

Speaker 3 (21:27):
I would not.

Speaker 7 (21:28):
I mean, that's the type of high-end talent you have
on the left side of your offensive line. And so
it really helps a guy like Quade Carr, right? I mean,
when you can line up at Quade Carr as your
first chance to get the ball in a Division I
big-time college football game, and your offensive line outweighs the
defensive line by 50 pounds, and you've got first-round talent

(21:49):
on the entire left side of that line, you should
have holes. He should have a really good game, and
the Huskies should rely on that run game big time.

Speaker 1 (21:57):
Apparently, Wazoo is not doing a depth chart, by the way,
for the game. So there you go. Not even doing one?
Aren't they required to? No, they're required to do an
injury update.

Speaker 2 (22:05):
Actually, no, it's a non-conference game, so they may not
be required to. Big Ten makes you do it, and
they're going to do four of them now. You hear
about that? They're doing four now. Injury reports, right? Injury updates.
They'll do a couple throughout the week, and then obviously
on game day. I guess they're not doing one. They're
not doing a depth chart.

Speaker 4 (22:22):
Why?

Speaker 3 (22:22):
I have no idea.

Speaker 2 (22:23):
I mean, it's just, you know, you do things like this,
and I don't like it when teams– I don't like
it when UW does it, when they come out and
they say, we are not going to release a depth
chart until they do.

Speaker 1 (22:32):
It's like, really?

Speaker 8 (22:33):
Why?

Speaker 3 (22:33):
Well, we released ours.

Speaker 1 (22:34):
Like, what are we doing here? They did.

Speaker 2 (22:36):
They did release theirs. And Wazoo has not released theirs yet.
But like, there's some, there's some, he said, she said,
you know, neener, neener, neener.

Speaker 1 (22:43):
We're not doing it until they do.

Speaker 5 (22:44):
Is this Apple Cup or is this just the fact that, hey,
it's the first game of the season. We don't really
have a full made out depth chart yet.

Speaker 1 (22:51):
I mean, maybe it's the latter. They better have one.
They're playing it on Sunday. Can you imagine? You wake
up on Sunday morning, coach, who's starting?

Speaker 6 (22:59):
We don't know.

Speaker 3 (22:59):
It's a good point, Jackson.

Speaker 7 (23:01):
But they can still put a depth chart out with
this dude or this dude at a bunch of positions, right?

Speaker 5 (23:07):
The Huskies have done that in the past. Here's my
follow-up question. For a team like Central Washington or Eastern Washington,
would we expect that they would put out a depth
chart in this exact same circumstance?

Speaker 2 (23:18):
I would expect that anybody who's playing anybody would have
a depth chart.

Speaker 5 (23:22):
Then at that point, the obvious question to WSU and
their athletic staff.

Speaker 1 (23:26):
It's sort of just like.

Speaker 3 (23:27):
What are you doing?

Speaker 1 (23:30):
Do you want to be here?

Speaker 5 (23:31):
Because if you don't want to be here, and if
you don't want to do this, and if you don't
want to get the money that's involved with the Apple Cup,
then just tell us.

Speaker 3 (23:39):
Just be honest.

Speaker 2 (23:40):
It just makes you look small time. And I know
that they are in some ways. I get it.

Speaker 3 (23:45):
They're going through a lot. But they're not that small.

Speaker 2 (23:47):
I don't want to kick them too much while they're down,
but it really does make it look like it's just chintzy.

Speaker 3 (23:53):
Really?

Speaker 1 (23:54):
We can't even get a depth chart?

Speaker 2 (23:55):
You can't even find an intern in the comms department
to go find Kirby Moore and say, Coach, can you
just give me 22 guys?

Speaker 1 (24:01):
Just give me something.

Speaker 3 (24:02):
Can I write them on this note?

Speaker 2 (24:03):
That I can just put into an Excel document and
just throw it out there on the internet.

Speaker 1 (24:08):
Can you give us something?

Speaker 2 (24:09):
The Spokesman Review did come out with a projected too
deep for Washington State, but they don't have any heights
and weights on here.

Speaker 3 (24:16):
Just players.

Speaker 2 (24:17):
I can look up their roster. Well, I'm not that
curious about it to go cross-reference all these names.

Speaker 3 (24:23):
Here we go.

Speaker 2 (24:24):
I do think that we're going to see a significant difference, though,
in the size of the Husky players versus the size
of the Cougar players. And that usually is the case, right?
In a game like this, the Apple Cup, it usually
is the case. I think the difference, my point, is
going to get bigger and bigger and bigger, Dick, as
the years go by.

Speaker 3 (24:39):
No question. I mean, if you throw me some names,
I got the Cougar depth chart. Do you want to
find the defensive line?

Speaker 2 (24:44):
Let's go with Ashton Tripp, left tackle. Ashton Tripp. Can
we do this live on the air?

Speaker 3 (24:49):
We can do this live on the air.

Speaker 6 (24:50):
Oh, wait.

Speaker 3 (24:51):
I just have to organize it by jersey number.

Speaker 1 (24:53):
How about we do it? Just do control F. How
about this? How about we do it during a break?

Speaker 6 (24:56):
All right.

Speaker 8 (24:56):
I'll do that.

Speaker 2 (24:57):
And then we'll report on this later on the show.

Speaker 1 (24:59):
That sounds good.

Speaker 6 (24:59):
All right.

Speaker 2 (24:59):
I mean, we don't have a lot of good stuff today.
We're talking to Petrus. We'll stretch that as far.

Speaker 1 (25:04):
As we can.

Speaker 2 (25:04):
So at some point today, we will compare the heights
and weights of the Husky offensive line.

Speaker 1 (25:08):
I've got it.

Speaker 2 (25:09):
Versus the heights and weights of the Cougar defensive front,
and we'll do it vice versa. So we'll get to
that coming up. But again, don't forget, pregame show starts
at 9 o'clock. Kickoff at 1 o'clock on Sunday afternoon.
I do want to get some text going for textimonials
at 445 and ask people, if this is a game
that you want to see continue, is there the enthusiasm
for this thing? Because, again, wherever the Huskies were, wherever

(25:30):
the Cougars were, The Cougars and their enthusiasm level has
definitely dropped.

Speaker 1 (25:34):
There's no doubt.

Speaker 2 (25:35):
And I think the Huskies and their enthusiasm level has
dropped as well, but it's not dropping as fast as
it is in Pullman.

Speaker 1 (25:41):
I think the thing, obviously fan voices are important with this.

Speaker 3 (25:44):
They are.

Speaker 5 (25:46):
Obviously this decision will come down to the 80s, the presidents,
the schools themselves, right?

Speaker 6 (25:50):
Right.

Speaker 1 (25:52):
I always say follow the money, right? That's the classic line.

Speaker 5 (25:55):
And the money that's involved with the Apple Cup benefits
WSU so much. And looking at the text line, there's
people on both sides all over the map.

Speaker 1 (26:05):
Textimonials be fun.

Speaker 5 (26:06):
So with that said, wouldn't it then, regardless of how
many WSU fans don't want this game and hate this
game and say, screw it, you abandoned us, goodbye.

Speaker 3 (26:16):
Right, right.

Speaker 1 (26:17):
That kind of wouldn't matter to a university that looks
at the money, right?

Speaker 3 (26:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (26:22):
Again, I just wonder, and we've talked about this with Wilner,
how much financially they would lose if they did not
play this game.

Speaker 3 (26:30):
I don't know the answer to that. I'm going to
ask Pat tomorrow.

Speaker 7 (26:32):
Or on Friday when we have him on. I think
he's seen it from both sides, right? He would know
the answer to that question.

Speaker 3 (26:38):
I would agree with Jackson. It logically would seem.

Speaker 7 (26:43):
Like Washington State playing Washington would be more financially beneficial
than them playing a game against Portland State.

Speaker 6 (26:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (26:51):
Well, I'll tell you what it is.

Speaker 2 (26:52):
It's financially beneficial to Pullman when the game's in Pullman
because a night at a hotel costs you $ 1, 000. I mean, seriously,
they make their entire nut in one weekend. I mean,
it's bananas. Cougar fans complain about it, right? So, anyway,
Pat will join us on Friday's show. We'll talk to
him then about all that.

Speaker 1 (27:08):

It's time for a little fun with audio. Slash, hey,
did you hear that? Hey, Dick, did you happen to
hear that?

Speaker 3 (28:00):
What's up, Dave? What's that, Dick?

Speaker 1 (28:01):
Laz Montes, two.

Speaker 2 (28:02):
For four with a single and a solo home run
in his debut for the M's last night in Boston.

Speaker 3 (28:06):
After the M's.

Speaker 2 (28:07):
Win with his family cheering in the stands nearby, Montes
spoke with Brad Adam on the Mariners TV postgame show.

Speaker 9 (28:14):
Soak this all in, right? What has this been like
for you and your family?

Speaker 4 (28:20):
A dream come true? Actually, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 3 (28:23):
Everything, man.

Speaker 10 (28:24):
Like, this is better than that dream, man. This is
better than that dream.

Speaker 3 (28:29):
Believe me.

Speaker 9 (28:30):
Okay, tell me about your night. An RBI single, and
then you've got, of course, your first home run. A
little hanging slider. Did you think it was gone off
the bat?

Speaker 10 (28:39):
Man, I hit it, but I just ruined it. I
knew that I hit it very, very good.

Speaker 6 (28:44):
But, you know.

Speaker 10 (28:46):
I run, run, and that was a special time for me,
special moment for me, man.

Speaker 4 (28:53):
You get the ball back.

Speaker 9 (28:54):
We talked to the fans who caught that ball, and
then you almost knock over your third base coach, Carlos Cardoza.

Speaker 1 (29:01):
What was that like?

Speaker 10 (29:02):
Yeah, I said, I said, hey, we need, hey, but
before I said, like, when I hit a homer, we need.

Speaker 4 (29:09):
To jump like a basketball player.

Speaker 10 (29:12):
So, right through that, it came into my mind and
we did it. But I said, we need to practice that.
You know, I made sure that you jump better than that.

Speaker 4 (29:20):
You get the trident and you and Randy play a
little guitar.

Speaker 7 (29:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (29:24):
Now, was that improvised? Do you play guitar? Did you
plan that?

Speaker 10 (29:28):
I say, I buy a guitar, but I don't know
how to play it, man.

Speaker 4 (29:31):
Neither does Randy. That's okay. And the rock, paper, scissors,
you won on that too. I won it. 2-1.

Speaker 10 (29:36):
Yeah, I won it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 4 (29:38):
Always positive, man.

Speaker 2 (29:39):
Well I tell you what first of all I appreciate
the fact that he speaks English with the media yes
There's a couple other guys on this team that don't
do that, and I like the fact that Montez does
do that. Second of all, I mean, if he takes off,
he's got it all. I mean, the charisma, the personality, right?

Speaker 1 (29:56):
Everything.

Speaker 3 (29:57):
Hell of a player, by the way, obviously.

Speaker 2 (29:59):
So if he takes off, that's going to be a
gift from the gods. But he also has a little
bit of Sammy Sosa, right? Baseball been better than good
to me.

Speaker 5 (30:06):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (30:07):
He just sounds just like Sammy Sosa, man, when he's
talking there. So I was irritated he wasn't in the
lineup today. I still think it was a mistake to
not put him in the lineup today. Even the M's
are crushing it right now at Boston. But this is
a guy who I think, you know, this is what
they do, guys. When they come home for their next homestand,
everybody's sitting around going.

Speaker 1 (30:27):
I'm going to protest. I'm not going to go back.
You're going to want to go watch this guy play.

Speaker 11 (30:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (30:32):
I mean, you're going to want to go.

Speaker 3 (30:33):
See him play, Dick. And you know it.

Speaker 7 (30:35):
And let's just hope that T-Mobile Park isn't too big
for him. T-Mobile Park's too big for most right-handers, but
this guy might be an exception.

Speaker 8 (30:43):
Right.

Speaker 6 (30:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (30:45):
Well, I love it.

Speaker 1 (30:45):
I mean, good for them for bringing him up. Good
for him. Great debut. Hey, Dick, did you happen to
hear that?

Speaker 3 (30:51):
What's that, Dick?

Speaker 2 (30:51):
Yesterday on 95.7, the game down in San Francisco, Fox
Sports 1 broadcaster Efram Salam made two things very clear. One,
he's picking the Rams to win the Super Bowl. And
number two, he does not know who won the Super
Bowl last year.

Speaker 1 (31:04):
What is the league really looking at?

Speaker 2 (31:06):
Like, if we're trying to find a reason to think
that they're not going to just steamroll everybody, what would
it be?

Speaker 6 (31:12):
I don't know. I think they're going to steamroll everybody.
I put my money on the Rams. I'll take the
Rams over the field. I think they have everything they
need to repeat. They remember what it felt like to
miss out last year, and they felt like they should
have won it, which all intents and purposes, they come
out of that game. They definitely do. So I think

(31:34):
they're on a mission, and they're angry, and they got
better this year. They got better this year than they
were last year. So good luck to the league.

Speaker 1 (31:41):
We'll be right back.

Speaker 2 (31:59):
When was the last time that you had the league
so bent over for a team that did not win
the championship the year before?

Speaker 3 (32:06):
I cannot remember.

Speaker 1 (32:06):
It's unbelievable.

Speaker 3 (32:07):
I mean, yes, you're right.

Speaker 7 (32:08):
It's going to be a team that has a generational
quarterback like Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes. Matthew Stafford's a great quarterback,
but he's not a top five quarterback of all time.
And I can't remember a time that it wasn't a
team that was coming off a championship.

Speaker 2 (32:23):
Well, and Vegas agrees. That's the thing about it. Vegas
says they're the clear favorite. They are a heavy, heavy favorite.
The gap between them and the second-best.

Speaker 1 (32:35):
Team, it's huge.

Speaker 2 (32:37):
You don't see that very often unless you're Tom Brady
or Patrick Mahomes.

Speaker 1 (32:41):
Hey, Dick, did you happen to hear that?

Speaker 3 (32:43):
What's that, Dick?

Speaker 2 (32:43):
On Monday's Jim Rome show, the longtime talk show host
reacted to USC football fans not showing up for the
team's season-opening game against San Jose State last weekend and
talked about how L.A.

Speaker 1 (32:54):
Is a bad sports town.

Speaker 11 (32:56):
This might not be a traditional sports town. It's the
best town of frontrunners ever. They will always go where
the best party is, where the best team is, period.

Speaker 3 (33:11):
This is how it's always worked.

Speaker 1 (33:13):
It's freaking Hollywood.

Speaker 4 (33:15):
There are a million things to do in.

Speaker 11 (33:17):
This town, sports and non-sports related, if it's a million
degrees outside. And USC is opening Against San Jose State.
And the team has been pretty much ass the last
couple of years. They will pick beach over football every

(33:38):
single time. Until USC gives them a reason to go
back to the Coliseum, they won't. But I assure you,
as soon as the Trojans do anything worth showing up for,
people will show up once again.

Speaker 1 (33:51):
Because that's what L.A. fan does.

Speaker 3 (33:53):
They go where the best party is.

Speaker 1 (33:54):
Yeah, I mean, I agree with what Willner said yesterday.

Speaker 2 (33:57):
I flipped on that game, and I wasn't surprised at
all to see a terrible crowd. They're just casuals. I mean,
the entire city's full of casuals.

Speaker 5 (34:04):
Right?

Speaker 2 (34:05):
Like, who's the longtime L.A. sports columnist? Is it Plasky
or whatever? Wrote about how, you know, L.A. sports fans
are great.

Speaker 3 (34:10):
No, they're not.

Speaker 2 (34:11):
They're just not. They're fair weather, casual band, wagon jumpers.
Maybe more than any other town in America. And I
can prove that by the state of L.A. sports talk radio.
You don't hear people in L.A. calling talk shows, ripping
people new you-know-whats like they do in Philadelphia. And in

(34:32):
New York City, by the way, places like that, they
just give up and they go to the beach.

Speaker 1 (34:35):
So it's who they are. And frankly, you know what?
I don't blame them.

Speaker 2 (34:38):
If I lived in a place like that, I'd be
pretty damn happy too and not spending my time getting
angry about my teams.

Speaker 5 (34:44):
I was editing this clip this morning, and my wife,
who's from Los Angeles, I'm listening and I'm editing this clip.
And she chimes in and she says, that's crap. I'm like,
what do you mean? She's like, if that game was
at night, fans would have attended that game.

Speaker 1 (34:58):
You get beach in the afternoon, you get games.

Speaker 5 (35:00):
In the night.

Speaker 1 (35:01):
And I kind of like.

Speaker 5 (35:02):
We had an interesting discussion where she seems to think
that LA sports fans are.

Speaker 1 (35:07):
There are diehards in her opinion. I don't know. I
haven't lived there. We haven't lived there, but.

Speaker 3 (35:12):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (35:13):
If USC plays San Jose State at 7 p.m. instead
of the afternoon, it wouldn't matter. There's 35, not 25.

Speaker 7 (35:18):
Well, and here's the reason I think it got national
news is because it was week zero and there was
hardly any other football games on. If it was lost
in a Saturday with 75 other football games, it would
not have been national news.

Speaker 1 (35:33):
Well, I mean, look, we've seen light crowds at UW before.

Speaker 6 (35:36):
Right?

Speaker 1 (35:36):
I mean, how many will they get for the Utah
State game?

Speaker 4 (35:39):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (35:39):
Will there be 55,000, 10,000 empty? There'll be a lot.

Speaker 3 (35:42):
Of empty seats. There'll be 50,000.

Speaker 2 (35:43):
We've seen games at UW where there's 15,000 empty seats
in that stadium.

Speaker 1 (35:48):
We know what that looks like.

Speaker 2 (35:49):
So everybody, unless you're in a place like the SEC
or a Michigan or an Ohio State or a Nebraska
or a Penn State, there's a few of them out there.
Most people get bad crowds for games like that. So
I'm not surprised by that at all.

Speaker 3 (36:05):
But hold on, hold on.

Speaker 5 (36:06):
Are we going to fill 50,000 since the WSU band
isn't coming?

Speaker 3 (36:09):
Oh, yeah, because we have plenty of Husky fans.

Speaker 2 (36:11):
Apple Cup will be fine. The question is, is Utah
State bringing their band?

Speaker 1 (36:16):
Okay? Honestly, dude, guys, when's band day, by the way?

Speaker 3 (36:20):
Is it next week? Next weekend?

Speaker 1 (36:21):
They're going to have 20 high school bands up in
the upper deck.

Speaker 3 (36:24):
Minimal.

Speaker 2 (36:25):
So 14-year-old kids can handle it, but 20-year-olds can't.

Speaker 3 (36:28):
That's what you're telling me.

Speaker 7 (36:31):
I'm okay with those type games not getting big crowns
at Husky Stadium.

Speaker 1 (36:34):
No, he's talking about the marching band.

Speaker 3 (36:36):
Right, right.

Speaker 1 (36:36):
About the Cougar marching band not coming.

Speaker 7 (36:39):
For me, hey, there's only seven times you can see
the dogs at home every year, so I think you should.

Speaker 1 (36:43):
Go to all of them.

Speaker 7 (36:44):
But if you're going to miss one or two, I
get it that it's Utah State. I mean, those are
the ones you miss. You don't miss the conference games.
You don't miss the Apple Cup. You miss Utah State
and whoever else we play in.

Speaker 3 (36:55):
Eastern.

Speaker 1 (36:56):
You realize what the Cougars have done, by the way.

Speaker 2 (36:58):
They have set this thing up to be a running
joke the entire season at Husky Stadium. Every game we
go to, if we look up in the stands and
we see the visiting marching band in the upper deck,
we're going to say.

Speaker 1 (37:08):
Oh, man, look at them.

Speaker 2 (37:09):
They could handle it. But Wazoo Cunt, is Utah State
bringing their band next Saturday? Is Eastern bringing their band
in two weeks? I bet Eastern will because it'll be
a drive. Well, they could drive from Pullman. Cheney or Pullman,
what the hell's the difference?

Speaker 4 (37:23):
I know.

Speaker 2 (37:23):
All right, we're going to break. Petros will join next
on 93.3 KJRFM.
