Speaker 2 (00:18):
It's time for our weekly conversation with legendary sports writer
Larry Stone. Brought to you by the Ram Restaurant and Brewery. Bigger, better,
and fresher since 1971. With eight Puget Sound locations from
Marysville to Lacey and everywhere in between. There's a Ram
near you. Now with Softie and Dick, here's Larry Stone.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
All right, here we are, 5.03 on a Wednesday afternoon.
Big thanks to the Ram for sponsoring this shindig right
here every Wednesday with Larry Stone, which, by the way,
to accommodate football and other factors, we'll be moving to
6 o'clock on Tuesdays. starting next week. And Larry, look,
we all know you're a busy man in retirement. You
got a lot of stuff going on, a lot of
volunteer work, things like that. And we really appreciate your

(01:02):
flexibility for how busy you are these days. So thank
you for agreeing to move to Tuesdays at 6, starting
next week.

Speaker 4 (01:09):
Yeah, I had to move a lot of things around,
but for you, I was able to do it.

Speaker 5 (01:13):
We appreciate it. We love you, man. Well, let's talk
Mariner baseball.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
I remember it was a week ago, whatever, we asked
you on the air about this team making a run,
and you said, you know what, guys, I just don't
see it.

Speaker 5 (01:23):
And maybe you still don't see it.

Speaker 3 (01:24):
I mean, if the Astros win tonight, the M's are
still five games back in the West, but all of
a sudden they've won four of their last six series,
three of the last four. Nice series win in Boston,
maybe showing some life. Has this moved the needle for
you at all?

Speaker 4 (01:40):
Well, if you recall, I did see it and you
were shocked.

Speaker 5 (01:44):
Oh, that's right. Last week. Yes, you're correct. Correct.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
And I was about to revise that after the Toronto
series and then they blew the opener in Boston. I
was thinking I'm going to have to do a mea
culpa mea culpa with Dick and Softie, but I'll stick
with it now that they've won these last two.

Speaker 6 (02:06):
Well, they are 2-4 since the last time we talked
to you there.

Speaker 7 (02:12):
Well, let's talk about some good news, though. I love
the spark from Montez. Can we read anything into his performance?
Let's look at the pitchers he faced yesterday. It was
all AAA pitching, and we all know that Montez can
hammer AAA pitching.

Speaker 6 (02:29):
Am I reading.

Speaker 7 (02:29):
Too much into that, or were you optimistic about what
you saw going forward?

Speaker 4 (02:35):
Uh, I think you're probably, your instincts are probably right. Don't,
don't get ahead of yourself. I mean, look back on, on,
on debuts. I mean, Emerson was great for a while
and then he faded and Rodden, you know, hitting six
straight and then he faded. You know, you have that
adrenaline and going on that first game, first couple of
games and, and then reality hits. But I mean, how

(02:58):
could you not like what you, what you saw? And
he's got a great personality, a lot of energy. I think,
I think he's what this team needs. Frankly, you know, I, I,
couldn't believe that he wasn't in the lineup today. Yeah.
Even though it was a lefty, but I mean, we're
talking Taylor Ward, who's hitting one 20. You know, I'd

(03:19):
rather take my chances left on left with, with Laz
Montez than, than, sticking Ward back out there and watching
him go for four again.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
Yeah, he had an 893 OPS against lefties in AAA
with a 361 on base percentage, and he was hitting 260,
which is fine, right?

Speaker 5 (03:38):
There's nothing wrong with that. I thought that was weird.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
And I thought giving Cal Raleigh the day off was weird,
considering how much he's been hitting the ball in the
last week or so. But they won the game, so
I guess no harm, no foul for now. But, you know,
now we're going to get to a point, Larry, where
they got 22 games left to go. 17 of the
22 are against teams that are currently 98 games under.

Speaker 5 (04:01):
500.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
And I asked Brian Schmetzer on the air yesterday, hey, like,
behind the scenes, does that stuff matter? Does that give
you some extra hope? If you're a coach and he
basically said yes, but it's not something you would talk
about in public behind the scenes. Do you think these
guys see that and notice that and think, all right,
we got an opportunity here that we got to take

(04:21):
advantage of.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
I mean, I do think that they know what the
schedule is. They know the teams that are coming in.
You know, I was looking at the Astros still have,
they have a couple games with the White Sox, the Diamondbacks,
the Phillies, the Rays, the Braves. I mean, and the
Rangers also have the Rays and the Diamondbacks and the
Red Sox and the Blue Jays and the Twins. So,

(04:43):
I mean, it's still there for them. How many games
are left? About 20?

Speaker 8 (04:48):
22.

Speaker 4 (04:48):
You know, 22, 16 and six might just be enough
to do it. And I don't see why they can't
do it against his schedule. I mean, the A's hammered
the Rangers today. It's not like you just throw your
gloves out there and you're going to win. But the
A's are just decimated. They're without Langoliers and Kurtz and
Wilson and Brett Rooker and I think Soderstrom. Their five

(05:11):
best hitters are all out. Uh, I guess there's a
chance Langoliers might come back as a DH, but this
is a depleted team that you should, you should be
able to handle almost sweep them. And, and the angels
are a little tougher and then, you know, the Rockies
aren't very good. Uh, and you still have the Rangers
and the Astros, but you want those teams. You want
to be able to make up ground head to head.

(05:33):
So I think it's, I think it's laid out for them,
which is why I said last week, as dire as
it looked that I thought they still had a good
shot to make the playoffs. Um, look, just, just think
how close they were to us. a 4-2 road trip.
They just kicked those two games that they had in
hand with bad decisions, bad managerial decisions, bad decisions by players.

(05:58):
And that's too familiar a story with this team this year,
which is why they're in the predicament that they're in.

Speaker 5 (06:03):
You know what's funny?

Speaker 3 (06:03):
Baseballreference.com, Jackson and I looked it up as of this morning, 7.2%
chance to win the division. 7%. Vegas has them at
plus 500 now to win the West. And they were
plus 180 a week ago. So Vegas is starting to
not believe in that.

Speaker 7 (06:17):
They're 80 to one now to win the world series.
And like a month ago, they were like 12. It's,
it's amazing. Larry, what needs to happen in the last
month for Dan to keep his job? Is it, is
it literally playoffs or bust? Or do you see a, Hey,
look at this rally. We won 14 and lost eight
in the last 22. And we went on a good
note and lost by two games in the division. Would

(06:37):
that be enough?

Speaker 4 (06:39):
I don't think so. I think it's, it's a playoffs
or bust. And I think it may be beyond that.
I think it may be up. I mean, I think
I said on here a while ago that if they
make the playoffs, he's probably safe, but I don't think
that anymore. I mean, there were 10 games under 500.
I think if they make sneak into the playoffs and
it's a first round ouster, I don't think he'll be back. Uh,

(07:00):
if they make a run, uh, then yes, you know,
if he wants to be, I mean, you look at
the guy's face, he, most of the time, he doesn't
look like he's enjoying himself. I'm just wondering if he'll say,
you know, this managing thing, I gave it a try, uh,
at this stage of my life, it's not, not, not
what I want to be doing. And I'll let someone
else give it a try.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
No, that's exactly, uh, Larry, I think you're dead on that.
That's been my gut all along that, you know, he,
He didn't need to do this. I mean, him and
Annie had a great life in retirement and he was
living here and having fun and doing great things. And
then he's asked to come, you know, fall on the
sword for the M's and save them. And they did well.
And now he's getting beat up by everybody. I don't

(07:40):
need that for crying out loud. So I totally think
you're dead on about that. But, you know, staying in
the division for a second, we might go back to
the M's in a minute. Stan Kroenke is buying the Angels, right?
Everywhere he goes, every team he buys does insanely well. Championships,
Denver Nuggets, the Avalanche in the NHL, Arsenal in the

(08:02):
Premier League, the Rams in the NFL. Should John Stanton
and Chris Larson and us as Mariner fans maybe be
a little concerned that the days of the Angels being
the Drek of the West might be over?

Speaker 4 (08:16):
Yeah, I think so. You know, Artie Moreno, the previous owner, Uh, he,
you know, he started off pretty well, but, uh, you know, he, he,
he was not a good owner. He was headstrong. He,
you know, spend money in the wrong places and then
stop spending money, made bad hires. Uh, I think that's

(08:38):
kind of a sleeping giant being in the, in the
SoCal with, uh, you know, players like to go there
and with an, with an owner who probably wants to, to, uh,
show the Dodgers that, that he can keep up with them.
I think there, there is a lot to worry about.
And then you also have the A's, uh, who have
been a pushover for a while for a few years, uh,

(08:58):
moving to Vegas with a, with a bigger revenue stream. So, uh,
you know, I think the division is going to get
tougher in the next few years.

Speaker 7 (09:06):
Well, speaking of ownership, I mean, The Seahawks have that sign,
the VMAC, to the effect of consistent championship expectations. And
we just never hear that from the Mariners. It's consistent
competitive expectations. That's the whole 54% mantra there. So would
a cleaning of the house actually change the culture when
the goal of the franchise is just to be competitive?

Speaker 4 (09:30):
Probably not. I mean, they're pretty consistent with that from
regime to regime. I mean, they would tell you that
we want that they want, uh, championships, but, uh, they
haven't shown it. You know, they, after 2022, they didn't
open their wallets, you know, coming off that playoff appearance
last off season, they didn't to a great extent, uh,

(09:53):
that they've shown in, in, their actions that while they
they want to be competitive they don't have that burning
desire to win a championship i just haven't seen it
right um so i would mean i doubt if things
are going to change this off season maybe you never
know which is the year where they say forget it

(10:13):
we're going for it but uh you know, that hasn't
happened really to a great extent yet.

Speaker 3 (10:19):
Yeah, well, this is probably a conversation, Larry, and Larry
Stone with us, courtesy of the Ram, that probably should wait.

Speaker 5 (10:24):
Until the end of the year, but what the hell,
I'm going to ask it anyway.

Speaker 3 (10:27):
If they do make a change over the offseason at manager,
my concern and my, I guess, curiosity is I wonder
if Jerry DiPoto wants a strong personality in the dugout.
Does he want somebody who's going to push back? Does
he want a Bruce Bochy type guy, for example? I'm
not even sure if Bruce wants to manage anymore, for
crying out loud. But if they did make a move,

(10:48):
would you expect that they would be willing to hire
a guy like that, who's won before, who's got a system,
who would push back on some of the stuff that
comes from the front office? Or would they want somebody
who's more in line with their line of thinking that
would just fall in line?

Speaker 4 (11:03):
That's a fair question. I mean, you look at DePoto's history,
he was with exactly what you described in Mike Socia
with the Angels, and they clashed, and he ended up
getting forced out of the job. And look at his
two managerial hires here. Scott Service, who had never managed
at any level, and Dan Wilson, who had never managed

(11:23):
at any level. Two guys that he could have control
over because they had no experience to fall back on.
I would think that this is a situation that cries
for the type of manager that you're talking about, and
I would hope that if Jerry stays... And Dan doesn't

(11:45):
that the ownership would put pressure on him to hire
a manager with some stature and some experience because, uh,
you know, that they tried it the other way and
had some success. But, uh, I think the way this
season has kind of fallen apart, uh, just screams out
for a manager with, uh, with, with more experience and more, more, uh, uh, gravitas,

(12:07):
I guess.

Speaker 6 (12:08):
Well, Softie put out his blame ranking, I think it
was yesterday, right? And he ranked, you know, you have ownership,
you have the field manager, you have the general manager,
you have the players. I think you put players first
and then you put manager second.

Speaker 9 (12:20):
Is that right, Dave?

Speaker 5 (12:21):
I believe so, yes.

Speaker 6 (12:21):
And then ownership and then Jerry.

Speaker 4 (12:23):
Right.

Speaker 6 (12:24):
I think that's the ranking. How would you rank those
four as far as the failures of this baseball team
this year?

Speaker 4 (12:29):
Speaker 4, you know, I, I saw that tweet softy
and I agree with your order. Wow.

Speaker 7 (12:37):
Speaker 0 5 15, September 2nd, 2026.

Speaker 4 (12:43):
Holy crap. Speaker 4 Yeah. I, I agreed with your order. The,
the players first and foremost, the underachievement of Cal and
Julio and Naylor, and even the pitching staff, which has
been far more inconsistent than they've been in previous years.
You know, I put that number one and I mean,

(13:07):
you just have to, you have to point the finger
at Dan too. I love the guy. He was a
pleasure to cover as a player and, you know, got
to know him as a, as a human being over
the years, but he just, just a lot of baffling
decisions this year and he just doesn't seem to to
have that knack to, uh, that, that we've seen with

(13:27):
Mike McDonald in, uh, in, uh, you know, hard knocks
over hard knocks. Yeah. Uh, that, uh, he just is
lacking that. So I put him number two, uh, ownership, ownership, not, not, uh, okay. Any,
you know, the, the free agent that the impact free

(13:49):
agent that they needed this off season. And then, uh,
you know, Jerry fourth, uh, Yeah, well, it's not but
not blameless, but but it has to be for.

Speaker 3 (13:57):
Yeah, we can argue the gap between all four, but
that would be my order for sure. And Larry, you know,
we're talking off the air about this.

Speaker 5 (14:05):
You know, it's really funny. I'm having a.

Speaker 3 (14:07):
Senior moment right now, and I totally forgot what I
was going to ask. I mean, I had one more
Marin request. Larry, how often does that happen to you?
Please be honest with me.

Speaker 4 (14:15):
Well, it just, it happened to me. It happened to
me on the last question. That's what we're here for.

Speaker 5 (14:21):
That's all right.

Speaker 4 (14:22):
We're here for that.

Speaker 3 (14:25):
I had another Mariner question, and I don't even know
what the hell it was. So I'm just going to
skip ahead and move to the Apple Cup, because we
got to ask you about the Apple Cup, man. Getting
played on Sunday, and Dick and I are talking on
the air that normally this time of year, it's normally
in November, but there's some anxiety in the office.

Speaker 5 (14:45):
You can feel anxiety.

Speaker 3 (14:47):
The anxiety between Husky fans and Cougar fans that all
work together. And there's none of that right now. Like
all the Cougar fans that work here, they don't care.
They're not even going to the game. We got three
of them in the building right now and not one
is even going to the game on Sunday. They're just
taking their ball and they're going home. It just doesn't
have the juice, right, that it had in years past.

(15:07):
So you tell us about this game on Sunday and
then give us your thoughts, Larry, on the future of
this game because it certainly seems like it's possible we
might be looking.

Speaker 4 (15:16):
At the end. Yeah, I mean, the juice isn't there.
There's a lot of reasons for that. They play in
different conferences now. You know, the transfer portal, it's a
new squad of players every year who don't, you know,
they're not imbued in the, in the rivalry and what
it means. And then, and the timing of the game,

(15:38):
the first game of the year, all those factors detract
from what it used to be. So, you know, I'd
like to see it. I'd like to see it keep going.
It's got a storied history and it means a lot
to a lot of people in the state, even though
the meaning is declining, but I wouldn't be at all
surprised if, you know, you know, in a, within a decade,

(15:59):
at least that they, they'd stop playing the game.

Speaker 6 (16:02):
Larry, I need you to settle a debate we were
having on the air yesterday concerning Aaron Donald. Softie and
I are on one side. Jackson's on the other. We
won't tell you which side we're on unless you listen
to the show.

Speaker 9 (16:13):
Maybe you did.

Speaker 7 (16:14):
But how much impact is Aaron Donald going to have
on this football team? How much does it worry you
that Aaron Donald's on this football team?

Speaker 4 (16:23):
I think he's going to have impact, but I think
it's going to be less. How many years did he
sit out?

Speaker 5 (16:28):
Two years? Two years. Correct. He's 35 years old.

Speaker 2 (16:31):
Now, right?

Speaker 4 (16:32):
I just think it's harder to come back than he
may realize once he's stopped. Guys who have retired say
they kind of lose that desire to hit somebody when
you haven't done it for a couple of years. So
I would lean towards whichever one of you said it's
not going to be as big an impact as people think.

Speaker 6 (16:51):
That's me and Softie. That's the right side, Larry.

Speaker 5 (16:54):
Jackson's just panicking.

Speaker 10 (16:56):
I'm just going to say it real quick. You all
hope that what Larry said is true. We hope and
we also think. We can hope and think of the
same thing.

Speaker 5 (17:05):
And you think that it's wrong. And I expect disappointment,
so I'll never be disappointed.

Speaker 3 (17:09):
I mean, Larry, what surprises me about it is that,
you know, I don't know if you're a big gambling
guy or not.

Speaker 5 (17:13):
I mean, you know, I've heard rumors, by the way.

Speaker 3 (17:15):
The Rams are plus 500 to win the Superbowl and
the next best team is plus a thousand.

Speaker 5 (17:21):
Is that right?

Speaker 4 (17:21):
That's right.

Speaker 3 (17:22):
I mean, that is a Vegas is telling you that
they think the Rams are not only the best team
in football, but that the best team in football by
a large, large, large margin.

Speaker 5 (17:32):
Are you buying that?

Speaker 4 (17:34):
No, I mean, I'm not a gambling man. Uh, but I, uh,
I can understand why with Miles Garrett acquisition and Donald
coming back and the fact that they were a good
team last year, but I don't see them being head
and shoulders above everybody else. The Seahawks won it all

(17:55):
last year and are bringing back the vast majority of
their key players. I don't think that gap exists. You know,
if the Rams have passed the Seahawks, it's by a
very slight margin. And, you know, anything could happen in
their two games. I don't see... I'm going to disagree

(18:15):
with Vegas, who rarely makes mistakes, but I think they
did on this one.

Speaker 7 (18:19):
Well, the stat on Vegas has been wrong on these
heavy favorites all the time. Over the last 30 years,
it's been a preseason favorite of 5-1 or better 20 times,
and those teams are 0-20 winning the Super Bowl. So
what's interesting is we figured out today that the Mariners'
odds in Vegas.

Speaker 6 (18:37):
To win the division.

Speaker 4 (18:38):
500.

Speaker 6 (18:38):
And the Rams' odds to win the Super Bowl are
exactly the same.

Speaker 5 (18:41):
How about that?

Speaker 6 (18:42):
Which team has a better chance?

Speaker 4 (18:48):
Probably the Rams.

Speaker 6 (18:50):
I think so, too.

Speaker 3 (18:51):
I mean, maybe if the Astros lose tonight and you're
four out, we can ask you that question again tomorrow.
I mean, Larry, I can't remember what popped into my
head 30 seconds ago or what you said last week.

Speaker 5 (19:01):
So there's no way I'll remember any of this conversation,
by the way. By the way, do you take anything
for that, honestly, at your age?

Speaker 7 (19:08):
Like ginkgo biloba or something like that?

Speaker 3 (19:11):
Ginkgo biloba?

Speaker 4 (19:14):
No, I do not take anything. That's a rude question.

Speaker 5 (19:18):
It is not! It is not a rude question. I'm
asking you for some advice.

Speaker 4 (19:23):
Come on!

Speaker 5 (19:26):
No, I don't.

Speaker 4 (19:27):
I don't.

Speaker 11 (19:27):
All right.

Speaker 5 (19:27):
Well, if that changes, let me know. Larry, you're the best.
Love you, and we'll talk in a week.

Speaker 4 (19:31):
Thanks, Larry. All right. It's my anniversary tonight, so we
may go out to the ramp for a nice romantic dinner.

Speaker 5 (19:39):
How many years are we talking about?

Speaker 4 (19:42):
It's our Jackie Robinson anniversary.

Speaker 5 (19:45):
Wow. 42 years. God bless her, by the way. 42
years with you. Where did you guys meet, by the way,
you and your wife? Tell us the story.

Speaker 4 (19:53):
Well, yeah, we met in Yakima when I was working–
My first job out of high school. She's from Wenatchee.
She was working at the hospital in Toppenish, and we
met through mutual friends. And that was back in the mid-' 80s, early-' 80s.

Speaker 3 (20:08):
You ever think when you were in Berkeley running around
with your hippie outfit on that you're going to meet
your wife in Yakima, Washington and be together for 42
years at minimum?

Speaker 4 (20:17):
That was... I would have told you you were nuts
if you had told me that. Larry, you're the man.

Speaker 5 (20:21):
Love it. And we'll talk in a week. All right, buddy.
See you.

Speaker 4 (20:24):
All right. Thank you. All right.

Speaker 3 (20:26):
Larry Stone with us. I still haven't figured out what
that question was going to be. I'm telling you, it
was in my brain and then it was gone. It
might be an ADD thing. It might be a senior
moment thing.

Speaker 5 (20:35):
I don't know, man. I just know it's happening a
lot more often.

Speaker 7 (20:37):
Well, I do know being with you the last 25
years that in about 15 minutes, you're going to go, Oh.

Speaker 5 (20:43):
That's right. I remember what it was.

Speaker 3 (20:44):
A buddy of mine suggested something that I should take,
like a memory type thing, and I forgot what it was.

Speaker 5 (20:51):
I mean, isn't that ironic?

Speaker 6 (20:53):
Isn't it ginkgo?

Speaker 5 (20:54):
No, it was something else. Isn't that from memory? Something else.

Speaker 4 (20:57):
Creatine?

Speaker 5 (20:58):
No, it wasn't creatine.

Speaker 3 (20:59):
It was something else, and I totally forgot what it was.

Speaker 5 (21:02):
Yeah, maybe it was acid.

Speaker 4 (21:03):
Oh.

Speaker 3 (21:03):
That'd be pretty damn funny. You think the bosses would
allow that to do a show on acid, by the way?
I mean, as long as you got the dump button working,
we should be okay. All right, we're going to break.
We have a lot more to get to, including we're
going to give the audience a chance to benefit from
our predictions for the Mariners the rest of the way.

Speaker 5 (21:19):
I'll explain.

Speaker 3 (21:21):
Jackson and Dick don't even know what the hell's going on.
I have no idea. Next on 93.3 KJRFM.

Speaker 1 (21:27):
This is Duke of Duke Seafood, and this hour is
brought to you by Duke Seafood. Why don't you make
it a Duke's night tonight? Reserve your table today at dukesseafood.com. Now,
back to Softie and Dick on Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
All right, here's what we got going on.

Speaker 3 (21:44):
We are going to allow the listening audience to decide
if they are Team Softie, Team Jackson, or Team Dick
on the radio show right now, 49451. We'll explain what
we want you to text in just a moment. But
Mariners won today in Boston. They're 64-74. They have 22
games left to go. 17 of the 22 are against

(22:05):
teams that are currently 98 games under.

Speaker 5 (22:08):
500.

Speaker 3 (22:09):
The Astros are playing right now. What's the score of
that game, by the way, that Houston– who are they playing,
the White Sox? No, they're playing– who are they playing? Yeah,
White Sox, no score, bottom two. So the Astros have
23 games left to go. 14 of the 23 are
against teams over. 500, and the Rangers have 22 left,
and I believe 10 of the 22 for them are over.

Speaker 12 (22:32):
500.

Speaker 3 (22:32):
The Mariners have, right now, two games left against a
team that's over. 500, and that happens to be the Astros, who,
if they lose tonight, will no longer be over.

Speaker 5 (22:42):
500, okay? So they have the easiest schedule of the three.

Speaker 3 (22:46):
I want to go around the room, and I want
to find out what we think the Mariners will do
the rest of the way in the final 22 games. Now,
we're going to allow the listeners in the end of
this thing to text in if they're Team Dick or
Team Jackson or Team Softy.

Speaker 5 (22:59):
Here's what we're going to do. All three of us
are going to throw in something, okay?

Speaker 4 (23:04):
Oh.

Speaker 3 (23:04):
And we're going to take from the winning entries one person.
From that selection, so if it's Team Jackson that wins,
we'll get one person.

Speaker 5 (23:13):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (23:14):
And you can bring a buddy with you and come
with us and enjoy a night out or a lunch
or a breakfast or whatever we decide to do with
the three of us.

Speaker 5 (23:26):
Dune 3?

Speaker 3 (23:27):
Maybe Dune 3. All right, we're going to have a
Mariner prediction contest. So, for example, I'll go first. I
will throw in Duke's Seafood Restaurants.

Speaker 5 (23:34):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (23:35):
If Team Softee wins... and you text in Team Softee
and you're right, then we will all go to Duke's,
and one person with a buddy who texted in Team
Softee will pull one winner at random, and we will
invite them to come have dinner, lunch with us at
a future date at Duke's Seafood Restaurants to celebrate my
prediction on the final 22 games.

Speaker 6 (23:54):
But that's you paying your Duke stuff, even.

Speaker 5 (23:57):
If you're right. I don't care. It doesn't matter.

Speaker 6 (23:59):
Because this is for.

Speaker 5 (24:00):
So we're paying if we're right.

Speaker 3 (24:02):
This is not for us.

Speaker 5 (24:04):
This is for the audience. It's not for us. It's
for the audience. Okay.

Speaker 3 (24:08):
So what would you like to throw in?

Speaker 5 (24:10):
I'll throw, I'll go with the Ram. Throw in the Ram.

Speaker 9 (24:12):
All right.

Speaker 5 (24:12):
Jackson, you got to bring something to the table here.
What do you got? I did the Dino's stuff for
the World Cup. So let me throw in Dino. Jack
Snyder's favorite spot on the East Side.

Speaker 3 (24:20):
Bad feature and hard knock. So if you text in
Team Jackson and Jackson ends up being the closest to
the pin, I think we'll make it easy. We'll just
do points for total wins the rest of the way.
And whoever gets the most points wins, okay?

Speaker 5 (24:35):
If there's a tie, then we'll just flip a coin.

Speaker 13 (24:38):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (24:38):
We'll figure it out, right? But we'll just make it easy.
I got my number. You got to go around the room. So, Dick,
why don't you start because you get your number already.

Speaker 6 (24:44):
14 and 8.

Speaker 4 (24:45):
Wow.

Speaker 5 (24:46):
14 and 8 the rest of the way.

Speaker 6 (24:48):
They go 80 and 82.

Speaker 5 (24:48):
80 and 82.

Speaker 6 (24:49):
And they miss the playoffs by like two games.

Speaker 5 (24:50):
Okay, so here's the thing about 14-8.

Speaker 3 (24:53):
14-8 doesn't really sound like a lot, but that is
636 ball the rest of the way, which is 103
win pace the rest of the way.

Speaker 5 (25:00):
So 14-8, and they go 80-82, says Dick. All right, Jackson,
what do you got?

Speaker 9 (25:02):
Ooh.

Speaker 10 (25:08):
I think that they go on a run because it's
a classic Mariners thing to go on a run.

Speaker 2 (25:13):
Yes.

Speaker 5 (25:14):
I'll go one better.

Speaker 10 (25:15):
I'm going to go 15 and seven and they finished
81 and 81.

Speaker 5 (25:18):
Does that, is that enough to win the division?

Speaker 4 (25:20):
Nope.

Speaker 5 (25:21):
Oh, wow.

Speaker 4 (25:21):
Okay.

Speaker 5 (25:22):
How many games out do they finish then?

Speaker 4 (25:24):
Three. Three. Wow. Okay.

Speaker 3 (25:26):
Because remember, they don't need to pass the Astros. If
it is the Astros, they got to tie the Astros.

Speaker 5 (25:32):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (25:33):
So Dick says they're going 14 and eight. Jackson says
they're going 15 and seven.

Speaker 5 (25:38):
All right. You know what?

Speaker 3 (25:39):
Just for the sake of tiebreakers, they're going 16 and six.

Speaker 4 (25:42):
Perfect.

Speaker 3 (25:43):
The rest of the way. Which, by the way, is
117 win pace over the final 22. 16 and six, guys,
puts them at 82 and 80. And I think they
win the West at 82-80. But Jackson's not.

Speaker 6 (25:53):
Going to have to pay.

Speaker 5 (25:54):
16-6. Hey, look at that.

Speaker 4 (25:58):
82-80.

Speaker 6 (25:58):
Jackson's definitely not going to win.

Speaker 5 (25:59):
He got prices right and out.

Speaker 3 (26:02):
I'm just telling you right now, it's not about us.
It's never about us. It's about the audience. It's very
painful to listen to the show.

Speaker 6 (26:09):
I think 90% of everybody's going to text Team Dick.

Speaker 3 (26:13):
So let's just see what the audience says. So Team
Dick is 80 wins. Team Jackson's 81 wins.

Speaker 5 (26:19):
Team Softie's 82.

Speaker 3 (26:21):
That's 14 for Dick, 15 for Jackson, 16 for me.
Text in your first and last name. You want an
email too, Jackson, or what? First and last name of
your email and which team you want.

Speaker 5 (26:31):
To be on.

Speaker 14 (26:32):
Right?

Speaker 5 (26:32):
Dave Mahler, Softie KJR, Gmail, Team Dick.

Speaker 6 (26:35):
And we're going to pick something at random, right?

Speaker 5 (26:36):
We will pick from the winning side.

Speaker 3 (26:38):
We will pick one person at random from the winning
group to join us at Dino's, Duke's, or the Rams.

Speaker 10 (26:44):
If it's 80 or below, Dick. If it's 82 or above, Safi.

Speaker 5 (26:48):
But here's a reason.

Speaker 10 (26:50):
I'm going to keep my Dino's. We'll see what happens.

Speaker 7 (26:54):
Here's a reason, though, that it might be advantageous to
you to pick Jackson.

Speaker 6 (27:00):
Because there's going to be.

Speaker 7 (27:00):
Far fewer people that we are picking from if it
does end.

Speaker 3 (27:05):
Up on Jackson. Look, man, this is getting confusing for me.
It was your contest. Well, but that's why I'm.

Speaker 7 (27:11):
Trying to keep it simple. Just text in what team
you're on. I'm trying to look strategy here. No strategy.
What team are you on? Just give us the answer.
Team Jackson, Team Dick, Team Softee.

Speaker 3 (27:22):
Team Softee says the Ams are going to go 16-6.
You know that I've been waiting for this moment for
the schedule to open up now for a couple weeks,
and now it's opening up, right? They got, again, of
the 17 of the 22... Those three teams, which is Colorado,
the Angels, and the A's, are 98 games under. 500
right now. And then you have the Astros, and then

(27:43):
you have the Rangers for five. So Team Softee's got
them winning 16 the rest of the way. Team Jackson's
got them winning 15. Team Dick's got them winning 14.
The one consistent thing is that all of us have
them playing pretty damn well.

Speaker 5 (27:56):
The schedule's just so easy.

Speaker 7 (27:59):
I mean, I've bought into Softee's theory about the schedule,
but it's just the problem is.

Speaker 6 (28:04):
the five games before these two.

Speaker 4 (28:06):
Right.

Speaker 6 (28:06):
They went 0-5.

Speaker 9 (28:08):
Right.

Speaker 7 (28:09):
If they would have just gone 2-3, then maybe even
14-8 might be enough.

Speaker 5 (28:17):
That's right.

Speaker 7 (28:17):
But they screwed themselves this week by getting swept in
Toronto and Julio being an idiot in center field.

Speaker 3 (28:25):
If you're taking the odds, I mean, really, if you're
talking about strategy, you might want to text Team Dick
because you get 14 and.

Speaker 5 (28:32):
Below for everything.

Speaker 6 (28:33):
That's why I think most It's a pretty wide.

Speaker 5 (28:35):
Gap there, right? 13-9 is pretty good.

Speaker 3 (28:38):
12-10 is not bad either, but that won't be enough.
If that's what you guys want to do and just
give 14 below is Dick, 16 above is me, 15
is Jackson, that's fine. Team Softee, if you win and
you're 16 wins or more, we're going to Dukes. Team Jackson,
right on the number at 15. We're going to Dinos.

(29:00):
And then 14 wins or less is Team Dick. We're
going to Ram.

Speaker 5 (29:03):
All right? So we'll pick one person at random.

Speaker 4 (29:05):
All right?

Speaker 5 (29:05):
And you can bring a buddy. All right? Just be
a normal person, for God's sakes. All right?

Speaker 3 (29:11):
Don't be some creep from somewhere. I'm definitely going to
hear about this from my wife.

Speaker 5 (29:14):
You did what?

Speaker 3 (29:15):
When i get home tonight all right that's why we're
doing this in a public setting we're not inviting you
to our homes for crying out loud we love you
but we're not doing that so text in team dick
team jackson team softy first and last name in your
email which team you want to jump on and we'll
see what happens this will give us something fun to
do the rest of the way for the final.

Speaker 6 (29:35):
22 games now i kind of wish i would have
picked like 8 and 14 So there would have been
like a little gap there.

Speaker 7 (29:41):
You would have split it with Jackson. I would have
split it with Jackson and we'd be kind of happy. Again,
this is all about the audience. It's just about them.
You got the Ram covered. I got Dukes covered.

Speaker 4 (29:52):
Yeah, we're good.

Speaker 5 (29:52):
Jackson's got Dino's covered. I'm very safe. More beer for me.

Speaker 3 (29:56):
So get those texts in. How about we do this?
We'll give you until, what do you think, like 6.30 tonight?

Speaker 5 (30:01):
Yeah, why not? End of the show, 6.30.

Speaker 3 (30:02):
All right, we'll go until 6.30 tonight. You want to
think about it. You want to tell your buddies to
one entry per person.

Speaker 4 (30:09):
Okay.

Speaker 12 (30:10):
All right.

Speaker 3 (30:10):
Everybody is invited to partake. Just like the Cougar marching band.
We want you to take part in this thing. If
you don't want to take part, that's on you.

Speaker 5 (30:19):
Okay. We're going to break.

Speaker 3 (30:20):
We're going to hear a little bit from Dan Wilson
and then Mike McDonald from the final hard knocks episode
at six on 93, three KJR FM.

Speaker 1 (30:29):
This is Duke of Duke seafood. And this hour is
brought to you by Duke seafood. Why don't you make
it a Duke's night tonight? Reserve your table today at dukesseafood.com. Now,
back to Softie and Dick on Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.

Speaker 5 (30:44):
All right, here we go.

Speaker 3 (30:46):
Mike McDonald featured, I think, prominently, right, on the last
Hard Knocks episode. We're going to hear a little bit
from that coming up at 6 p.m.

Speaker 4 (30:53):
Tonight.

Speaker 3 (30:53):
You guys realize that in a week from now, the
game will be underway. One week from now. The first
quarter at.

Speaker 5 (31:00):
Lumen Field will be underway.

Speaker 3 (31:02):
We're going to be at Jimmy's on first, Kevin Harlan
on the show next week, working on some other surprises
for next week as well, and then back to the
520 Bar and Grill next Thursday after the Seahawks game.
So join us at Jimmy's on Wednesday and the 520
Bar and Grill in Bellevue on Thursday of next week.

Speaker 5 (31:18):
All right, Dan Wilson. You see, I got an idea,
and I'll tell you about it when this is over.

Speaker 3 (31:23):
Mariners got the win today, 8-3 over the Boston Red Sox.
The bottom of the order, J.P. Parada, Weston Wilson. 7-10,
three walks, five runs scored. Now 66-74, four and a
half games out as of this very moment. Astros and
White Sox are scoreless in the bottom of the third.
And by the way, as of this very moment, two.
the Toronto Blue Jays are exactly three runs better than

(31:47):
you in the race to avoid the worst offense in
baseball well all right I think we're pretty safe with
the teams we're playing we're probably pretty safe not being
last right well it's nine nothing Toronto in the top
of the eighth so I don't know I mean they
got a three run lead with 22 games left to
go here's Dan Wilson after today's win over Boston great serious.

Speaker 13 (32:06):
Win um you know I thought the The way the
guys attacked again offensively today was impressive, and two big
innings that really boosted us today. Particularly the bottom part
of the order, those bottom three guys really were impressive today.
And not just getting hits, but putting up good ABs,
finding walks from time to time, and really setting it
up for the top. And that was a huge contribution

(32:30):
from those guys down there today.

Speaker 4 (32:31):
And JP....

Speaker 9 (32:33):
Willie and Johnny doing a great job.

Speaker 13 (32:36):
The guys at the top doing a great job driving
them in and led to some really big innings. Bryce,
I thought, was extremely good today and a really good
one to build on for him. I thought he attacked.
We talked about using his fastball, which he did, and
used his secondaries pretty well.

Speaker 9 (32:54):
Again, a good outing from.

Speaker 13 (32:58):
Him, and then the bullpen stepped up and did what
they do really held it there. Rucker giving us two
innings was pretty big too.

Speaker 9 (33:06):
Just a really good.

Speaker 13 (33:09):
Series, one that you can gain some confidence from as
we head home here tomorrow.

Speaker 12 (33:14):
Given the way that this ballpark plays and how things
can shift so dramatically, how important was it to keep
your foot on the gas in those innings?

Speaker 9 (33:21):
Yeah, you have to. As you know, it's an interesting
ballpark and things happen here pretty quickly.

Speaker 13 (33:27):
I thought our guys did a really good job of
continuing to press and continuing to push. Outside of the
two big innings, we still had a lot of traffic
in other innings because they were just putting up good
at bat after good at bat. That's what it takes,
and that's what we need to continue to do when
we get back home.

Speaker 12 (33:45):
Did you notice more urgency at the plate over the
past couple days in particular, especially with how Monday went
out and played out?

Speaker 9 (33:51):
I mean, you know, I think we all feel urgency
right now.

Speaker 13 (33:55):
But I just feel like the at-bats and the quality
of the at-bats that these guys are putting up have
been really, really strong. And, you know, doing the things
offensively that make us successful, which is, you know, grind
out A-Bs, pass it to the next guy if that's
what the situation calls for.

Speaker 9 (34:14):
Getting a big hit here, a big hit there.

Speaker 13 (34:16):
We had some home runs in this series, too. Just offensively,
a really good series for us. Whether that's urgency or not,
I don't know, but that's something that we need to continue.

Speaker 4 (34:25):
How hard is it going to be to be able
to continue that forward?

Speaker 9 (34:30):
I think our guys got a good taste.

Speaker 13 (34:31):
Of it here in this series, and that's what we're
going to expect as we go back.

Speaker 4 (34:36):
We have to.

Speaker 13 (34:37):
We're in this situation, and urgency is.

Speaker 9 (34:41):
You know, is of the essence and our guys need
to continue. Really big series for Randy. Obviously we saw
him do it defensively today as well. Just kind of
what you see from his own ground game.

Speaker 4 (34:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (34:49):
You know, throwing that guy out in the first inning
was huge.

Speaker 13 (34:52):
Uh, you know, puts sort of the momentum on your side, uh,
a nice catch later.

Speaker 9 (34:56):
Um, and you know, in a big hit as well.

Speaker 13 (34:58):
So, uh, putting it together on, on all, all facets,
this was a really big series for him. Um, he
continues to swing in the bat and put up the,
the ABs and drive in runs. Um, And took advantage
of the wall here, too. I think those would have
been on anywhere, but really drove it. Really good series
for Randy. But, again, a really good series up and down.

(35:20):
One to gain a lot of confidence.

Speaker 3 (35:26):
Mariners are 35-18 in September under Dan Wilson.

Speaker 4 (35:30):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (35:30):
Oh, he's been amazing in September.

Speaker 7 (35:33):
We talked about that the other season.

Speaker 5 (35:36):
35-18. That includes the two in this month, obviously.

Speaker 6 (35:39):
I mean, look at him last year.

Speaker 9 (35:41):
Remember?

Speaker 4 (35:42):
It was 17-1.

Speaker 6 (35:42):
The Mariners went 17-1 in a September stretch. Other than that.

Speaker 7 (35:49):
They are 138 and 144 since the beginning of last season.

Speaker 5 (35:54):
So, like, what are they? Are they just a streak in.

Speaker 3 (35:56):
September, and that's all they are, and the rest, they're mediocre?
A 17-1 stretch this September may get them the West.
I mean, it probably does get them the West if
they do that again. So, I mean, that's one thing
he's done. I mean, there's plenty of games left to go.
They can certainly fall apart. But, you know, I was
just talking to Dick about this off the air, Jackson,
hearing Dan Wilson's presser. How funny would it have been
if Dan Wilson started his press conference and said, you

(36:18):
know what, tough one.

Speaker 5 (36:18):
Oh, I'm just kidding.

Speaker 4 (36:19):
We won. Right?

Speaker 5 (36:20):
Why not?

Speaker 3 (36:20):
Just play into it. Have some fun with it, right?
But that's not how he is. And it's so easy
to do, right? I mean, people would laugh at that.
People would stop busting your balls. Just like Joe Sheehan,
who normally is not very flamboyant with his commentary, right?
You guys have heard him on with Ian on his show.
Pretty straight last guy. He referred to Dan Wilson as
a plant, a potted plant. on the show the other day.

(36:43):
And that's not how he talks at all. That's not
his MO. It's not his personality. So when a guy
like Joe Sheehan is doing that, I just think it'd
be great if they would. This just goes back to
embracing like the 54% thing, embracing the piggyback thing.

Speaker 5 (36:56):
Why not? You know what?

Speaker 3 (36:57):
When everybody was pissed about the piggyback thing, how about
you replace the salmon run with a piggyback run in
the outfield?

Speaker 5 (37:03):
How freaking funny would that be?

Speaker 7 (37:04):
Self-deprecation would be amazing from any element of this entire
franchise and the ownership down, and there's never any self-deprecation.

Speaker 5 (37:12):
I mean, look at us. We do that all the
time on this show, and people love us. Well, now
it makes sense.

Speaker 4 (37:18):
Why not?

Speaker 5 (37:19):
All right, we're going to break. Hard Knocks is in
the books.

Speaker 3 (37:23):
If you haven't seen it, I guess, spoiler alert, we're
going to go over a little bit of it next
segment and wrap up the Hard Knocks campaign and start
talking some real football a week from the night right
here on 93.3 KJR FM.

Speaker 5 (37:39):
In this segment here, Hard Knocks is in the books.

Speaker 3 (37:42):
I thought after episode one it got progressively more boring
as the series went on. I have not seen episode five,
so I'll reserve judgment on that.

Speaker 5 (37:51):
You have seen it.

Speaker 1 (37:52):
Yes.

Speaker 3 (37:52):
You have seen it, and you guys think it ended
on a bit of an uptick. Is that fair to say?

Speaker 9 (37:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (37:57):
Better than the last couple episodes. I'd agree with that.

Speaker 3 (37:59):
Everybody that I've heard talk about it is that the
star of the show was Mike McDonald. And you guys
know my take on it. I think the best thing
the Hawks have going right now is Mike McDonald. Even
more so than the players, Sam Darnold, Jackson Smith and Jigba.
I mean, Schneider's awesome. Best GM in franchise history and
a Hall of Famer. But I don't think this works
without McDonald's scheme on defense. It just doesn't work without

(38:22):
that guy.

Speaker 4 (38:23):
Right?

Speaker 3 (38:23):
I mean, I don't think that there is honestly... And
I wonder what the Rams would say. Maybe with their
current lineup and their roster, they wouldn't do it. How
many NFL teams right now would fire their head coach
to replace them with Mike McDonald tonight?

Speaker 2 (38:35):
30?

Speaker 11 (38:35):
29?

Speaker 5 (38:35):
So, Kansas City with Reed.

Speaker 6 (38:40):
Yeah, but they might take a 25-year-old younger version.

Speaker 5 (38:43):
The Rams with McVay?

Speaker 12 (38:45):
Yep.

Speaker 5 (38:45):
No, they wouldn't do it.

Speaker 4 (38:46):
I mean, who?

Speaker 10 (38:47):
Shanahan and McVay.

Speaker 3 (38:48):
San Francisco? I'd fire Shanahan for McDonald. I don't think
they would do that. I'd agree with you.

Speaker 5 (38:54):
But you would, though.

Speaker 7 (38:54):
Yes, and what impressed me so much about Mike McDonald
is I always thought that, hey, Mike McDonald is this
just defensive guru. We've got a great coach that can
just out-scheme the opposition. What I learned the last five
weeks watching this is is that he is an unbelievable
leader of men slash head coach, not just a defensive genius.

Speaker 3 (39:15):
Right, and the amazing thing is that he's like three
years older than the oldest guy on the team. It's incredible. Well,
let's start with John Schneider, all right? Went across the street.
I think you guys know this by now. You know
what I think is really great is that he doesn't
even try to hide it, right? Yeah, I'm going to Dino's.
He loves his beer at Dino's. He may as well
just tweet it out. I'm heading to Dino's. See you guys.
Everybody knows he goes there.

Speaker 5 (39:36):
All of our listeners are the mock drafts. Everybody knows.
They all know. They went there and talked about hiring
Ryan Grubb.

Speaker 3 (39:43):
In the middle of a Friday night, the place was packed.

Speaker 5 (39:46):
Come on, right? So they're not hiding anything.

Speaker 3 (39:49):
Schneider goes across the street to Dino's in Renton where
he's drinking a beer and talking about the team's impending
cut-down transactions.

Speaker 15 (39:57):
We've been coming here since 2010.

Speaker 5 (40:00):
We're across the street from work, really close.

Speaker 8 (40:02):
You can have some difficult conversations over a beer.

Speaker 5 (40:05):
Difficult decisions, man.

Speaker 14 (40:08):
Because we still want to try.

Speaker 5 (40:10):
To help them.

Speaker 15 (40:11):
Team you know what i mean like yeah like trying
to like add more players in the like that collective
of 70 yeah and then be able to still have
the guys that we're talking to outside the practice squad
that have been here like stay ready the next couple
days about how we're getting ready to play the patriots

(40:32):
with this view towards how do we make our team
be as strong as we possibly and healthy as we
possibly can be in november december january february you know
like When we let guys go, we're like, hey, this
is why, A, B, and C. And, you know, hopefully
you can be back here soon. We just had to
do it because of this or this. And we're very transparent.

Speaker 5 (40:56):
I'm just the entire time he's talking, I'm thinking about
them being at Dino's. And you're just sitting down having
a beer.

Speaker 3 (41:01):
And how cool would it be if they just moved
like their draft headquarters there for one day, maybe like
day three of the draft. Just bring it all over there, right?
Set up some partitions or whatever, you know, some whatever.

Speaker 9 (41:13):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (41:14):
People can watch him work. It would be awesome. Oh,
it would be so good.

Speaker 3 (41:17):
Honestly, is there an NFL team and an NFL general
manager that is more publicly associated with an establishment like
John is with Dino's?

Speaker 5 (41:25):
Yeah, Bill Belichick and... Wait, no, no, sorry. That was
Robert Kraft. Robert Kraft.

Speaker 16 (41:29):
I ruined the dang thing. You're talking about the massage parlor? Yeah,
that's what I was... When I mean establishment, I mean
a restaurant or a bar. I was making a joke.
A place to, I was going to say eat, but whatever.

Speaker 8 (41:41):
Oh!

Speaker 5 (41:41):
I'm not going to.

Speaker 6 (41:44):
Sorry.

Speaker 5 (41:45):
There it is.

Speaker 3 (41:46):
I don't want to go down that road. You know
what I'm talking about. I mean a bar or a restaurant, okay?

Speaker 4 (41:51):
I see.

Speaker 5 (41:52):
Not a rubbing a you-know-what. My God.

Speaker 4 (41:55):
Jesus. Sicko.

Speaker 5 (41:57):
Sicko. You want to comment on that or no? No,
I do not.

Speaker 4 (42:01):
You're good?

Speaker 3 (42:02):
I'm staying away from it. No, not what I said,
but the Schneider clip.

Speaker 4 (42:05):
Oh, no.

Speaker 3 (42:06):
We've totally gone off the rails, so let's get back
on the rails. We've gone from John Steiner having a
beer at Dino's to Robert Kraft getting a massage. Mike McDonald,
Nicky Manwari discussing the safety's ankle recovery.

Speaker 14 (42:21):
Just had some things I was thinking of last night.

Speaker 8 (42:24):
I feel like I'm grinding every day to a point
where it's like I'm making progress, but like Can't really
do back-to-back hard days.

Speaker 14 (42:30):
Like, that two days ago, I was pushing it like
I was running. And then the next day, it was
kind of sore. Yeah, that's great.

Speaker 17 (42:36):
It's like a... It's great to be sore. Sore means
your body's going to heal from it. Like, that means
you're pushing it.

Speaker 8 (42:42):
But I feel like other people's, where they think I
should be at or where they want me to be
could be, like, kind of interfering with, like, where I'm
trying to go or where I'm trying to get to.

Speaker 14 (42:49):
It's like, every day, someone's asking me. You're going to play.
You're going to play.

Speaker 8 (42:52):
Yeah, so it's like, sometimes, it's like, I have a
different answer every time or it just catches me off guard.
So I have to, like, kind of sit kind of
in a weird spot, like.

Speaker 17 (42:59):
Like, I don't know what to say. But you can't
control if your body's ready. So it's just like, which sucks.
You know, you want to, like, hit the button.

Speaker 4 (43:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 14 (43:08):
Hey, man, I hit the button 20 times. You told
me to hit the button 20 times. I should be good.

Speaker 17 (43:11):
You know, it's like, it just doesn't work that way.
I think the directive to you is just keep grinding
away and just know, like, we're in your corner. Your
teammates are in your corner. We all see that you're
working really hard. Like, guys know who's trying, who's not.

Speaker 4 (43:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 14 (43:26):
You know what I mean?

Speaker 17 (43:26):
For the most part. So don't, like, Just level with them,
you know. I'm sure they get.

Speaker 2 (43:32):
It, too.

Speaker 14 (43:32):
Everything else going all right? Yeah, everything's good. How about you?
How are you feeling? Riding in the lakes today. I'm sore.
It's good to be sore.

Speaker 5 (43:43):
So that doesn't sound like he's playing in the Patriots.
I would agree with you. You agree on that? Yes.

Speaker 6 (43:49):
And you know what? I don't think he should probably
play in the first three games.

Speaker 7 (43:52):
Because if he can get through the Patriots game, he
can probably get through the other two.

Speaker 3 (43:56):
I want him back as soon as possible because I
want the guy to be in game shape as soon
as possible and killing quarterback shape as soon as possible.
I'm more worried about is this going to be a
problem for him all year long that just lingers. That's
what I'm worried about. And I'm not a doctor, right?
I play one on radio, but in real life I'm
not a doctor. I don't know about that, guys. I mean, again,

(44:16):
there were people that were coming on this radio station saying,
I mean, I'll just tell you it was Corbin Smith
went on with Ian and said he's got negative concerns
about Nicky Manwari when this whole thing came out. Well,
now he's probably not going to play in the opener.
And who knows what this will turn into. It might
be a nothing burger when it's all said and done.
The Hawks might be fine without him, and he might
be great when he comes back. But don't we have

(44:37):
to introduce the possibility that this will be an issue
for him this year?

Speaker 6 (44:39):
Absolutely, which is why I want to be really conservative
in September with him.

Speaker 4 (44:43):
Right.

Speaker 6 (44:43):
Really conservative. We need Nicky Manwari in defense.

Speaker 7 (44:45):
In December, January, and hopefully February more than we need
him in September.

Speaker 4 (44:51):
What?

Speaker 5 (44:52):
You want to comment on that? Oh, sure. When I
point to you.

Speaker 7 (44:55):
I don't know if you were pointing for a cut.

Speaker 5 (44:58):
I was like, do you want audio? I'm like Brad Pitt.
When I point to you... He gets on base. He
gets on base.

Speaker 10 (45:05):
Listen, the fact of the matter is, Nicky Manwari, we
talked about this before the Super Bowl, right? And Mike
McDonald said he was having sleepless nights before that game
with the concept of not playing. He changes the way
they can play because it's a safety out there who
can defend their run so well, allows them to play
the nickel, allows them to play an entirely different coverage
because of how versatile the guy is. So the more

(45:26):
games you go without Nick, the more you're... I mean,
we're talking about a team right now that I think...
you got to contend right there with the Rams at
the end of the season for the number one seed,
or else you're playing in LA there in, in, will
that be January, February, right?

Speaker 4 (45:42):
So.

Speaker 10 (45:44):
For my money, you have to get him on the field.
I get concerned with this.

Speaker 7 (45:49):
But the schedule gives you an opportunity, right?

Speaker 5 (45:52):
That's what you think. Yeah, right, exactly.

Speaker 10 (45:54):
Let's say that Washington game, which is early in the season, right?
If you don't have Nick for that Washington game and
Jaden Daniels eats you up because you can't play the
style of defense that you want to, that's the kind
of game where I'm like, oh, shoot, we need him
for that type of game forever.

Speaker 5 (46:09):
Against that type of quarterback.

Speaker 6 (46:11):
Let's split the difference with you. Have them not play
against New England.

Speaker 7 (46:14):
And can we beat Arizona without Nicky Manwari, please?

Speaker 4 (46:17):
I mean, come on.

Speaker 7 (46:18):
So then you evaluate then, and maybe Washington comes out.
Fingers crossed. And Jaden Daniels looks like the two years
ago Jaden Daniels, and they're like, okay, we need to
rev up here.

Speaker 5 (46:29):
Let's go.

Speaker 3 (46:29):
I think the conversation about the NFL schedule right now
is totally different than the conversation we're having about the
Mariners schedule, because the Mariners schedule we have five months
right now to look at. The NFL schedule, we have nothing.
We have last year and the moves they made over
the offseason. That's all.

Speaker 7 (46:44):
But there are a few certainties in football. Arizona, I
would think, would be no problem.

Speaker 5 (46:48):
Yes, yes. But Washington, I don't know. I would agree
with that.

Speaker 3 (46:51):
Even you've admitted that. Flying 3,000 miles away. What the
hell is Jaden Daniels going to be this year?

Speaker 4 (46:56):
All right.

Speaker 5 (46:57):
Next up, Julian Love, Leonard Williams.

Speaker 3 (46:59):
Talk about playing together for 10 years after Big Cat
signed his new three-year, $ 90 million extension last week.

Speaker 9 (47:07):
Congrats, I guess.

Speaker 4 (47:08):
Thanks, bro.

Speaker 5 (47:11):
Oh, Leo.

Speaker 14 (47:14):
That means we got about... I know. We're about to
play 10 years together on different teams, too.

Speaker 9 (47:19):
All right, now I got to get another deal.

Speaker 14 (47:22):
I retire when you retire.

Speaker 9 (47:22):
How many more years do you have on your life?

Speaker 5 (47:24):
As long as you have.

Speaker 14 (47:25):
Oh, I have two more.

Speaker 2 (47:27):
Yeah, brother.

Speaker 14 (47:28):
So we at least guarantee 10.

Speaker 4 (47:29):
Might as well buy a boat together.

Speaker 5 (47:33):
Put it right here.

Speaker 6 (47:34):
Or an ice cream truck.

Speaker 9 (47:36):
We do have kids now.

Speaker 4 (47:38):
Yeah, they don't really have us anymore.

Speaker 5 (47:40):
What do we do?

Speaker 14 (47:42):
Mango trucks? Or mango carts?

Speaker 4 (47:45):
A little lote?

Speaker 14 (47:46):
What about shave ice?

Speaker 7 (47:47):
Yeah, I'm with it.

Speaker 9 (47:48):
Man!

Speaker 5 (47:50):
No money!

Speaker 6 (47:54):
I thought about Softie when they said shave ice.

Speaker 5 (47:57):
I thought I was like... They did it the right way.
They said shave. Shave ice.

Speaker 9 (48:00):
That's right.

Speaker 5 (48:01):
I shaved ice. Somebody who's been to Hawaii knows how
to say it the right way.

Speaker 7 (48:04):
I thought, and for a second, I pictured Softie in
Maui with Softie's shave ice.

Speaker 5 (48:11):
That's really the only reason I played that clip. That
was good.

Speaker 3 (48:14):
When did those guys show up here in Seattle? Pete's
last year? That's when they got Leonard Williams. Is that correct?
Because I know that they were 21-36-1 together in their
four years with the Giants.

Speaker 4 (48:27):
Yikes.

Speaker 5 (48:28):
And they totally flipped it in Seattle.

Speaker 3 (48:30):
Cooper Cupp teaching a group of young players about how
the Seahawks treat their cut-down days and the transition to
the 53-man roster and practice squad differently.

Speaker 14 (48:41):
So the team's going to change a lot. It's just, unfortunately,
it's part of this industry. It's part of what we do.

Speaker 11 (48:50):
And I give a little bit of an insight into,
give you guys just a little bit of insight into
how things work here. Because even last year, there were
guys that I thought had played to the point that
they were, like how there's no way they weren't making 53.
Because that's how it always seems things. Like there's 53
and there's the practice squad. Last year was the first
time that I saw how it's supposed to be done.

(49:13):
Where you believe in your true 70 to get the
job done for you.

Speaker 14 (49:18):
And so, there's going to be to be guys that.

Speaker 11 (49:20):
Aren't going to make the team this year aren't going
to make the 53 this year off the initial like
cuts just based on how the waiver wire works based
on how you work through all those things to make
sure that by the time week one comes around you
start your preparation that you have the best 70 guys
possible available for you So all this to say, cut

(49:43):
time's coming.

Speaker 14 (49:45):
I want you guys to.

Speaker 11 (49:45):
Understand that it's going to be interesting, maybe.

Speaker 14 (49:51):
Different than what you've heard of.

Speaker 7 (49:54):
I thought Cooper Cup, I raised my eyebrow when I
thought he took an accidental shot at the Rams there.

Speaker 6 (50:02):
I don't think it was a purposeful shot at the Rams.

Speaker 5 (50:04):
No, it's a shot.

Speaker 7 (50:05):
But when he said, that's the first time I've ever
seen it done the way it's supposed to be done.
As far as the way they treat their cuts? As
far as the way they, where they don't even, they
don't even say cuts. They don't even say practice squad.
They say ready squad, and we have a team of 70.
We don't have a team of 53. And that was
really hammered home in that episode last night. Just another

(50:26):
way that the Seahawks are different than every other franchise
in football.

Speaker 3 (50:29):
Well, my first thought hearing that is he sounds like
a coach, number one. Like he's, you know, he's portraying,
you know, the message from the coaching staff. Like somebody
told him, hey, you go tell these– you go handle this.

Speaker 5 (50:41):
Do it for us.

Speaker 3 (50:41):
Because I'm like, what the hell does Cooper Cup know
about getting cut? I mean, the Rams, I guess, let
him go, but, you know, they probably– end of his
career there, whatever, but cut down day, all that crap.
So he sounds like a future coach for sure. I
don't know if he wants to do it. I don't
know if he wants to continue doing it. He's made
a buttload of money, but he absolutely sounds like a
guy that is going into coach mode.

Speaker 10 (51:00):
Have you guys noticed the same thing I have where
Cooper Cup is in every single quarterback meeting? Whenever Hard
Knock shows the quarterback room with Milrow, Locke, and Darnold,
Cooper Cup is sitting there reclined in the corner. That's
very interesting that you have a wide receiver in what
seems like almost every.

Speaker 5 (51:18):
Remember the Ferrari conversation with Milrow? Cup is in the
room for that.

Speaker 7 (51:22):
Do you think that Cooper Cup might be the Cooper
Cup this year that we hoped we were getting when.

Speaker 4 (51:28):
We got him?

Speaker 5 (51:30):
I think it's less likely. He's 34 years old.

Speaker 6 (51:32):
But he's also healthy.

Speaker 5 (51:33):
He's also 34.

Speaker 4 (51:35):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (51:35):
I mean, he relies less on speed than a lot
of other wide receivers, right?

Speaker 5 (51:40):
Just a smart guy.

Speaker 4 (51:41):
Yes.

Speaker 5 (51:42):
I mean, is it possible? Yeah. Would I bet on it?

Speaker 15 (51:44):
No.

Speaker 5 (51:45):
He's 34. He'll be 34.

Speaker 3 (51:48):
Actually, he's 33. He'll be 34 next June. And he
hasn't had that season he had in 2021, Dick. That
was five years ago.

Speaker 6 (51:55):
Oh, that's not the one that we thought we were getting.

Speaker 5 (51:57):
You're talking about what?

Speaker 3 (51:59):
Like the 65 catch, 700 yard guy that he was
in 2024.

Speaker 5 (52:03):
That's what I'm talking about. I don't know, man.

Speaker 3 (52:05):
I mean, maybe with the lack of running backs they
have right now, they're going to come out and chuck
in the ball and he gets involved.

Speaker 5 (52:11):
But I just did the math, by the way.

Speaker 3 (52:12):
Julian Love and Leonard Williams were 21-36-1 in the games
they played together with the Giants.

Speaker 5 (52:18):
31-16, including playoffs with the Seahawks in three years. Let's
get one more.

Speaker 3 (52:22):
Mike McDonald, Trevon Diggs, talking about his timeline and plan
to work with the practice squad. I thought it was
a ready squad until he understands Seattle's scheme to play
better in the regular season.

Speaker 14 (52:35):
How clear are you on.

Speaker 17 (52:36):
What's going on, what the plan is and everything?

Speaker 14 (52:38):
I'm clear.

Speaker 2 (52:39):
Pretty clear?

Speaker 10 (52:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 14 (52:40):
Dude, pretty sick in the pick.

Speaker 4 (52:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 14 (52:42):
Do you get with everything?

Speaker 17 (52:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 14 (52:45):
I mean, to me, it's just like, dude, let's just
keep getting your legs back.

Speaker 4 (52:48):
Yeah.

Speaker 14 (52:49):
You know, let's get your wind up so you can
go play.

Speaker 2 (52:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (52:51):
And then let's go.

Speaker 14 (52:52):
You know, so whatever it takes for us to get
to that point, see it the same way.

Speaker 10 (52:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 14 (52:57):
How much time do you think you need to feel great, like, scheme-wise?
The stuff that I did in the game, like, I'm
comfortable with that stuff. But probably, like, just a couple
more weeks.

Speaker 4 (53:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 14 (53:09):
I'll be good. And it'll be tighter from week to week.

Speaker 4 (53:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 17 (53:12):
To me, it's like, let's just keep conditioning, keep training
like crazy. Like, this is a big week for you.
Anything else we can do better to help you out?

Speaker 11 (53:19):
No.

Speaker 4 (53:20):
Okay.
