had a conversation with Jedfish about the upcoming Husky football
season from Big ten Media Day in Chicago, and started
off by talking about just give us a progress reports.
Where this whole thing is in your mind versus where
it was when you first showed up here.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
Yeah. I think the biggest indication of the change is,
and I mentioned this today, is that we had seven
offensive linemen when I showed up here, and two of
those seven were coming off of ACL injuries. And now
we're sitting here with seventeen offensive linemen, and I would
argue that seven of them can start in a Big

ten at about almost every team we have out here.
So it's a huge difference there. I think that's where
it starts. And then I would say our defensive line
and our linebacking corps, you could see just such a
huge difference. So it's been fun, you know, get to
nine wins in our second year, you know, only been
done I think nine times in the last thirty years

at U dub and obviously first time doing it in
the Big Ten. So pretty cool about where we're at
and excited about where we're going.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
Yeah, what's funny you mentioned nine wins in year number two, which,
as you said, doesn't happen very often for head coaches
at Washington. But I know that your standards are higher
than that, right, I mean you're talking about making the
CFP competing for a national championship. So what is it
about this team besides the obvious? Right, we talked about
the line of scrimmage, We'll talk about the quarterback in

a second, if you were doing my show and my job,
which hopefully you'll never have to experience that, what would
your standards be for this football team this year?
Speaker 3 (11:43):
Jed Yeah. I think the biggest thing for us is
to be able to finish. And you know, as we
look through where we are as a program going to
year three, there's you know, we squandered some opportunities and
my hope is that this year we have an opportunity
to just finish. You know, we're a seven six half

time game again, Stillhio States seven seven against Michigan, right
ten three against Wisconsin.

You know, so you're sitting there.

In these games and you're right there in it. But
depth is a factor, and I'm excited to see where
our guys can be. I think the fact that we
have such great continuity we'll add to it. But every
game is a battle. We're in a different world. So
I don't look at this year. I got to look
at it differently than the last year. I got to say,
every year is its own year now here in the

Big ten, because if there's so many you know, changes
constantly with roster management, and you know, the dollars that
are invested in certain programs. So I'm just looking forward
to going out there and competing and seeing how many
we can win.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
Yeah, are you? Are you where you need to be
anio wise?
Speaker 2 (12:48):
I mean you've been pretty upfront about that, you know,
and honest, I think with everybody.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
But how much progress have you made? Okay?
Speaker 3 (12:54):
Yeah, no, we're not.

We're not even now.

We're not close to where we need to be if
we on to have consistent success on the national stage
in the top twenty to twenty five programs. I don't
think anybody wants to be, you know, in the thirties
and forties when it comes to nil and we need more.
And that's not me, beggan, That's just me saying that.

That's what it is. And there's a lot of false
rumors out there about what what's spent and what's not spent. Right,
I can tell you right now, we need to rally
the troops, we need to rally the businesses, and we
need to generate revenue to be able to participate in
the big boy game that's going on out here.

Well, Jed, I mean, let's just clear it up now, right,
I mean, you mentioned false rumors.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
I mean what are you hearing that's incorrect? And what
is correct?
Speaker 3 (13:48):
Well, I'm hearing that we're spending more than we're spending.
And you know, I think or that we have more
than we have. So what for us? What we need
to do is we need to be additive. We need
to find ways to create you know, generate business. We
need to find ways to create dollars. We need to

find a company that wants to put a Jersey patch
on our on our uniform and name our stadium, and uh,
you know, there's a lot of things out there that
could bring revenue into our program. Let alone, you know,
individual donors, Let alone, you know, find a way to
get some more third party dollars into the program. But
that's what we're the world we're living in right now.

And when you see in Ohio State sign a deal
for sixteen million dollars a year in a Jersey patch
and that's just add sixteen million to their bucket, right
And when we go out there and play Ohio State,
I think everybody wants to you know, they're still saying,
let's try to beat them.

Yeah, yeah, I heard it was seventeen, but who's counting?

You know, what's dounting? What's the difference? See right, jedfish
with us. So, Jed, you made the move with Jimmy Doherty.
Remember you talking about that over the offseason that you
wanted to be more involved in the quarterback room, more
involved with with guys like Demond. What does that look
like behind the scenes so far? What are your hoping
it looks like on game day?
Speaker 3 (15:14):
It's been a blast, love love where our staff is.
JP Losman has done a phenomenal job, taken on more
of a significant role in the quarterback room. I think
it's great to not have additional layers, the ability to

be able to have a direct line with the at
all times, to be able to with JP. I coached
JP in Seattle with the Seahawks. I feel like we've
gone full circle. So that's been awesome. And having Matt
Cavanaugh in the building as a sounding board has been
a really huge advantage in my opinion, someone that's, you know,
(15:57):
forty five year veteran around the game. But for for us,
for me, I've had more fun spring ball, summer ball,
just being around and you know, being being closer with
the players. I think being in your three it allows
you to be a lot more vulnerable to your guys
and to ask for more feedback from them. You no
(16:20):
longer trying to prove it. You're trying to build it together.
And that's that's really what I'm most excited about.
Speaker 2 (16:26):
Well, and look, you mentioned obviously finishing and that depth
is a factor, and we're hoping that depth can be
the difference between finishing the game against Wisconsin, finishing the
game against the Oregon, et cetera. But I mean, you
look at Demon's numbers, man, I mean, this is going
to be his sixteenth start in his twenty seventh game
already against the Koubs in the Apple Cup, and the
(16:46):
numbers last year don't look terrible at all. I mean,
one hundred and ten NFL passer rating, six hundred rushing yards.
But I know he wants more. I know you want more.
What what does more look like from Deman william Y.
Speaker 3 (17:01):
Yeah, more looks like you know, go from good to
great and then reset and then go from good to
great again. I think that for DeMont. You know, I
said to somebody today, you know, he's no longer a teenager.
But you know, we you know, if we're fortunate, we
could have demand for three more years a monthly and

you know, imagine each year the growth we can have.
But the idea that we're going into what the sixteenth
seventeenth game of you know, of him as a starter,
is just it's so different. We went into year game
three of him as a starter last year. Right, So
now he's got great demands and I would just expect better.

I just would expect him to be a better football
player than he was last year. And and I think
that'll be fun for all of the Washington community.

Right Well, A lot of people like to say a
lot of cliches like quarterbacks best friend as a running game.

I always thought that was nonsense.

I think a quarterback's best friend is an awesome offensive line.
And I think you've got the best offensive line you've
been or you've had since you've been here. But the
running back position, you know, I forgetting used to see
at number one running around you back there in Adam Mohammad,
a lot of new names. Right if the Apple Cup
were tonight, who's your starting running.
Speaker 3 (18:20):
Back that's going to be? It would be I don't
even know.

I don't know who would get the bro I don't know.

I was going to say it's gonna be running back
by committee. But yeah, your question was who's the starting

I think, you know, we've got Jayden Lamoar, We've got
Trey Cooley, We've got Quaid car Really, the three of
them have done a fantastic job competing this summer. We've
got hell, you know, no one. Really. We didn't see Jayden,

we didn't see Trey all spring. So now that we
have an opportunity to see what they look like on
top of the growth of Quaid, I'm excited. But it
is different. You know. For four years I looked out
there and had number one and had Jonah, and now
Sean Payton gets Jonah. So now I'm looking forward to

seeing what it looks like for us. Obviously not having Adam,
he was kind of this past year a good person
to rely upon for some carries and in the past
with Mike Wiley and DJ Williams, so this is a
new group for me. But we got a hell of
a running back at quarterback as well, and we got
a heck of running backs around him. And then with

Demand's ability to throw the football and run the football,
I think will be okay, especially with the offensive line
we have in front of him.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
Well, jedfish with us from Big ten media day in Chicago,
just a cup more. I know you've got to get
go into some more important stuff and talking to us
here in Seattle, But let me let me ask you
about the two eighteen year olds, because I don't know
if there's ever been an opener where there's going to
be more eyes on a defensive tackle and an offensive lineman,
then there will be in the Apple Cup with Cody

and DCB starting out there as eighteen year olds. And
I don't want to say concerned is the word, but
I Jed, I'd be lying if I wasn't massively curious
to see how eighteen year old kids did in the
trenches starting in the opening against Wazoo.

Yeah, I'm excited about it, but I also know that
I get to watch him every day go against you know,
I get to see DCB go against John Mills. I
see him go against Flannon Hatchett and Garon Hatchett and Champ.
So there's a good feel in terms of he's going

against some really good players. The same way when you
look at Cody, you know, Cody's blocking Logan George and
Jacob Blaine, Isaiah Ward and Duce Davis. So there's some
challenges there on an everyday basis. I don't get wrapped
up in it, you know, I know it's always going
to be you know, it's a rookie starter right in
the NFL. You're always a little bit nervous. You know.

You take a first round pick left tackle and then
you go out there and you throw him out there.
You know, we lived with Russell o'con in twenty ten,
Tryan Clady in two thousand and eight. So yeah, there's
some concerns, but I also know that those guys are
mature and we're gonna let it rip. Man, We're gonna

have a great time doing it.

I mean, one thing we do in this business is
we all have a take on the head coach. I
think most of us think that Jedfish has done a
pretty damn good job considering what he took over after

Kaitlin took off for Alabama. I don't think there's anybody
who probably reflects more on Jeedfish than Jedfish. So what
do you think? What do you think about the job
you've done in the two plus years you've been here
so far?
Speaker 3 (21:57):
You know, I think we've had a good We've had
a good start, but we're not nearly where we want
to be. And we want to be able to walk
out there and you know, raise a trophy for our
fan base, and we want to be able to celebrate
and commit to a long run together and see how
good we can all become. So I'm excited for where
(22:20):
we start, where we are. You know, I think we're
in a good place and I recognize where we started
and where we are right now. But we are not done,
and I can't wait to get back out on the field.
But I think the best reflection of our coaching staff
is our players. And the more you get this be
around our players, and the more you see the way
our players look and act and compete, I think that

that's really how I'd like you to judge our program
in our center.

he's obviously very direct with the nil stuff. I mean,
before I can even get the words out of my mouth,
he's cutting me off.

He's he's talking that they're you know, in the thirties
and forties in nil, right. I mean, you've got thirty
two teams combined in the big ten in the SEC.
That insinuates that they're near dead last from his perspective,
in the big ten in the SEC in nil dollars,
you know, I mean, he's dead dead right about. Ohio

State announces that seventeen million dollar a year Jersey patch
deal with Chase. Notre Dame follows up later that day
with a twenty million dollar deal I think it was
with so far on their patch. So look, I know
U Dub's working on it. They're working on a new
stadium sponsor for the turf at Husky Stadium.

A jersey patch for either a the football team or
be the entire department as a whole.

But nothing's imminent in that regard.

So look, there there are plenty of opportunities to make money,
plenty of platforms and plenty of tools that you have
at your disposal that you can use to make money.
Things that used to be totally off limits, like jersey
patches in college football, are no longer taboo. And if
you doub wants to be a part of this arms race,
they've got to start taking advantage of that. So I

think they need to be creative. They need salespeople, they
need people to get on board from a fan base perspective. Eventually,
maybe there's going to be a salary cap and this
stuff will settle itself down. But until that day, this
is all about money. So I thought it was pretty
interesting Jackson, how quickly he jumped in to cut me
off and say, we are nowhere, We're nowhere near where

and our linebacking corps, you could see just such a
huge difference. So it's been fun, you know, get to
nine wins in our second year, you know, only been
done I think nine times in the last thirty years

at U dub and obviously first time doing it in
the Big Ten. So pretty cool about where we're at
and excited about where we're going.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
Yeah, what's funny you mentioned nine wins in year number two, which,
as you said, doesn't happen very often for head coaches
at Washington. But I know that your standards are higher
than that, right, I mean you're talking about making the
CFP competing for a national championship. So what is it
about this team besides the obvious? Right, we talked about
the line of scrimmage, We'll talk about the quarterback in

a second, if you were doing my show and my job,
which hopefully you'll never have to experience that, what would
your standards be for this football team this year?
Speaker 3 (11:43):
Jed Yeah. I think the biggest thing for us is
to be able to finish. And you know, as we
look through where we are as a program going to
year three, there's you know, we squandered some opportunities and
my hope is that this year we have an opportunity
to just finish. You know, we're a seven six half

time game again, Stillhio States seven seven against Michigan, right
ten three against Wisconsin.

You know, so you're sitting there.

In these games and you're right there in it. But
depth is a factor, and I'm excited to see where
our guys can be. I think the fact that we
have such great continuity we'll add to it. But every
game is a battle. We're in a different world. So
I don't look at this year. I got to look
at it differently than the last year. I got to say,
every year is its own year now here in the

Big ten, because if there's so many you know, changes
constantly with roster management, and you know, the dollars that
are invested in certain programs. So I'm just looking forward
to going out there and competing and seeing how many
we can win.

I mean you've been pretty upfront about that, you know,
and honest, I think with everybody.

But how much progress have you made? Okay?

We're not even now.

We're not close to where we need to be if
we on to have consistent success on the national stage
in the top twenty to twenty five programs. I don't
think anybody wants to be, you know, in the thirties
and forties when it comes to nil and we need more.
And that's not me, beggan, That's just me saying that.

That's what it is. And there's a lot of false
rumors out there about what what's spent and what's not spent. Right,
I can tell you right now, we need to rally
the troops, we need to rally the businesses, and we
need to generate revenue to be able to participate in
the big boy game that's going on out here.

Well, Jed, I mean, let's just clear it up now, right,
I mean, you mentioned false rumors.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
I mean what are you hearing that's incorrect? And what
is correct?
Speaker 3 (13:48):
Well, I'm hearing that we're spending more than we're spending.
And you know, I think or that we have more
than we have. So what for us? What we need
to do is we need to be additive. We need
to find ways to create you know, generate business. We
need to find ways to create dollars. We need to

find a company that wants to put a Jersey patch
on our on our uniform and name our stadium, and uh,
you know, there's a lot of things out there that
could bring revenue into our program. Let alone, you know,
individual donors, Let alone, you know, find a way to
get some more third party dollars into the program. But
that's what we're the world we're living in right now.

And when you see in Ohio State sign a deal
for sixteen million dollars a year in a Jersey patch
and that's just add sixteen million to their bucket, right
And when we go out there and play Ohio State,
I think everybody wants to you know, they're still saying,
let's try to beat them.

involved with with guys like Demond. What does that look
like behind the scenes so far? What are your hoping
it looks like on game day?

It's been a blast, love love where our staff is.
JP Losman has done a phenomenal job, taken on more
of a significant role in the quarterback room. I think
it's great to not have additional layers, the ability to

be able to have a direct line with the at
all times, to be able to with JP. I coached
JP in Seattle with the Seahawks. I feel like we've
gone full circle. So that's been awesome. And having Matt
Cavanaugh in the building as a sounding board has been
a really huge advantage in my opinion, someone that's, you know,

forty five year veteran around the game. But for for us,
for me, I've had more fun spring ball, summer ball,
just being around and you know, being being closer with
the players. I think being in your three it allows
you to be a lot more vulnerable to your guys
and to ask for more feedback from them. You no

longer trying to prove it. You're trying to build it together.
And that's that's really what I'm most excited about.
Speaker 2 (16:26):
Well, and look, you mentioned obviously finishing and that depth
is a factor, and we're hoping that depth can be
the difference between finishing the game against Wisconsin, finishing the
game against the Oregon, et cetera. But I mean, you
look at Demon's numbers, man, I mean, this is going
to be his sixteenth start in his twenty seventh game
already against the Koubs in the Apple Cup, and the

numbers last year don't look terrible at all. I mean,
one hundred and ten NFL passer rating, six hundred rushing yards.
But I know he wants more. I know you want more.
What what does more look like from Deman william Y.
Speaker 3 (17:01):
Yeah, more looks like you know, go from good to
great and then reset and then go from good to
great again. I think that for DeMont. You know, I
said to somebody today, you know, he's no longer a teenager.
But you know, we you know, if we're fortunate, we
could have demand for three more years a monthly and

you know, imagine each year the growth we can have.
But the idea that we're going into what the sixteenth
seventeenth game of you know, of him as a starter,
is just it's so different. We went into year game
three of him as a starter last year. Right, So
now he's got great demands and I would just expect better.

I just would expect him to be a better football
player than he was last year. And and I think
that'll be fun for all of the Washington community.

lot of cliches like quarterbacks best friend as a running game.

I think a quarterback's best friend is an awesome offensive line.

been or you've had since you've been here. But the
running back position, you know, I forgetting used to see
at number one running around you back there in Adam Mohammad,
a lot of new names. Right if the Apple Cup
were tonight, who's your starting running.

Back that's going to be? It would be I don't
even know.

we didn't see Trey all spring. So now that we
have an opportunity to see what they look like on
top of the growth of Quaid, I'm excited. But it
is different. You know. For four years I looked out
there and had number one and had Jonah, and now
Sean Payton gets Jonah. So now I'm looking forward to

seeing what it looks like for us. Obviously not having Adam,
he was kind of this past year a good person
to rely upon for some carries and in the past
with Mike Wiley and DJ Williams, so this is a
new group for me. But we got a hell of
a running back at quarterback as well, and we got
a heck of running backs around him. And then with

Demand's ability to throw the football and run the football,
I think will be okay, especially with the offensive line
we have in front of him.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
Well, jedfish with us from Big ten media day in Chicago,
just a cup more. I know you've got to get
go into some more important stuff and talking to us
here in Seattle, But let me let me ask you
about the two eighteen year olds, because I don't know
if there's ever been an opener where there's going to
be more eyes on a defensive tackle and an offensive lineman,
then there will be in the Apple Cup with Cody

and DCB starting out there as eighteen year olds. And
I don't want to say concerned is the word, but
I Jed, I'd be lying if I wasn't massively curious
to see how eighteen year old kids did in the
trenches starting in the opening against Wazoo.

Yeah, I'm excited about it, but I also know that
I get to watch him every day go against you know,
I get to see DCB go against John Mills. I
see him go against Flannon Hatchett and Garon Hatchett and Champ.
So there's a good feel in terms of he's going

against some really good players. The same way when you
look at Cody, you know, Cody's blocking Logan George and
Jacob Blaine, Isaiah Ward and Duce Davis. So there's some
challenges there on an everyday basis. I don't get wrapped
up in it, you know, I know it's always going
to be you know, it's a rookie starter right in
the NFL. You're always a little bit nervous. You know.

You take a first round pick left tackle and then
you go out there and you throw him out there.
You know, we lived with Russell o'con in twenty ten,
Tryan Clady in two thousand and eight. So yeah, there's
some concerns, but I also know that those guys are
mature and we're gonna let it rip. Man, We're gonna

have a great time doing it.

pretty damn good job considering what he took over after

Kaitlin took off for Alabama. I don't think there's anybody
who probably reflects more on Jeedfish than Jedfish. So what
do you think? What do you think about the job
you've done in the two plus years you've been here
so far?
Speaker 3 (21:57):
You know, I think we've had a good We've had
a good start, but we're not nearly where we want
to be. And we want to be able to walk
out there and you know, raise a trophy for our
fan base, and we want to be able to celebrate
and commit to a long run together and see how
good we can all become. So I'm excited for where

we start, where we are. You know, I think we're
in a good place and I recognize where we started
and where we are right now. But we are not done,
and I can't wait to get back out on the field.
But I think the best reflection of our coaching staff
is our players. And the more you get this be
around our players, and the more you see the way
our players look and act and compete, I think that

that's really how I'd like you to judge our program
in our center.

A jersey patch for either a the football team or
be the entire department as a whole.

But nothing's imminent in that regard.

So look, there there are plenty of opportunities to make money,
plenty of platforms and plenty of tools that you have
at your disposal that you can use to make money.
Things that used to be totally off limits, like jersey
patches in college football, are no longer taboo. And if
you doub wants to be a part of this arms race,
they've got to start taking advantage of that. So I

think they need to be creative. They need salespeople, they
need people to get on board from a fan base perspective. Eventually,
maybe there's going to be a salary cap and this
stuff will settle itself down. But until that day, this
is all about money. So I thought it was pretty
interesting Jackson, how quickly he jumped in to cut me
off and say, we are nowhere, We're nowhere near where

we need to be. Yeah, that's for me.

That and the no we don't have a starting running
back comment is certainly what stands out. I mean for
maybe it's like, maybe it's the soccer fan in me,
but I have no problem with jersey sponsors like sponsor everything.

You're right, it comes back to dollars. Like this whole thing,
we all want you dub to win. We all want
them to go to the CFP and to go far.

to money, money, money, money, money, and spending on players

won ten games and skip the Bowl game. But that's
Notre Dame. That might be the most valuable brand in sports.

For crying out loud, Okay, you could certainly argue that.
So I think it's I mean, he's gonna have to
do some things to get people motivated, right, He's gonna
have to do some things to get businesses motivated. Like
you know, there's years in this town, whether we're the
Seahawks or the Mariners back in two thousand and one,

in the day, in the mid nineties, the Huskies and
the nineties and the two thousands, where people didn't even
give a damn what they were getting in return.

so what is that that's gonna get Husky fans and
