this team feels like they're circling the American drain right now.

You know, the weekend up there was great. We were
there alone. I was there for five days, but I
didn't expect to see what I saw. I mean it
was rough. I mean, Tampa Bay's a good team, and
they came in and took air of business, swept them.

Then they went to New York.

And New York's on and off. You know, they're a
good team. A lot of their key guys are missing,
but they squeaked that one out today. I just I
don't know what to make of it. I look at
this team, I look at this roster, and I just
don't know how it goes this way. I don't know
see how so many guys are just off their game
from a year ago, you know, from that to to

the to the staff, and I and I feel I
feel for all of them, you know.

I we had our, we had our.

You know, the ceremony for for the fifty years was
was Saturday, and we walked on the field and YW.
Rawley happened to be announced right after, shortly after me
and walked by me and and I just I.

Wanted to give him a hug.

I just could see the look in his eyes, like
I hit sixty homers. There's huge expectations. I'm not living
up to them. And I could put myself in his butt.
Not probably to this degree, but as a player when
you feel like you're letting the world down. And I
see it in his eyes, and I see it in
a lot of the player's eyes. It's like they don't

know what to do. The staff members are pulling their
hair out. They don't know what to do. You know,
this is a team not too long ago was they
were a few outs away from a World Series, and
right now it's about as tough as it gets. The
only the only solace they might be able to have
here is.

The beginning of the year.

You go into the season and things are kind of going,
you know, not as well as the Mariners would hope,
but they're they're right their top of the division.
Speaker 5 (04:05):
They're just waiting to get hot.

And the Houston Astros were nowhere to be seen, and
I thought, it's finally over that Houston Astro run. They're
dead and buried. I thought the Boston Red Sox in
the West or in the East, who I thought were
gonna win the division this year. Two months in, my
buddies are laughing at me for picking the Boston Red Sox.
So that's the only the hope I hold out for
the Seattle Mariners is something as transitional as that San

Diego Padres at the deadline, they make a huge deal.
All of a sudden, they're right there, hot as a firecracker.
Does Seattle have that in them? You know, talent wise, absolutely,
but it's gonna take that type of run. They're only
three and a half out in the wildcar, but I
was looking they got to skip that.
Speaker 5 (04:47):
They've got eight teams in front of them.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
You know, it's one thing to be three and a
half out with a team that you've got a piggy
bat piggy, you know, a leapfrog. But you're talking eight
and that three and a half.
Speaker 5 (04:58):
It's kind of a misleading.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
I think ten days ago, twelve days ago, they were
leading the division, and all of a sudden they go
on a run like this, Houston's hot. Texas is just
kind of playing five hundred like they have all year.
They're still there in the division. It's just I don't know.
I don't even know what to make of it. I
don't have an opinion. I've racked my brain about this team.
Eventually they're gonna come a lot, and they just don't.

And they're just not hitting the ball, and it looks
like it's something that's gonna be a year long. Hopefully not,
but it isn't looking.

I know it's not fashionable in twenty twenty six to
play small ball and hit behind the runners and steal
bases and do all that sacrifice flies and bunts and everything,
But do you think that style would maybe take some
pressure off these guys to always have to get you know,
hard hit rate and hitting three run home runs because
the three run home runs are just not coming for

this version of the Mariners.

Well at this point, Dick, I mean, it is.

Who whatever you pull the like I said last week,
pull the shoot.

It's an emergency time.

You do what you gotta do to win games. I
don't care how you win games. You just got to
find a way. If it's hit and run, sacrifice, butt
up and down. It's one thing to talk about playing
that way and playing for my money, playing the game correctly,
which is sacrificing runners with the correct people at bat,
hitting and running with guy the correct person in the

batter's box. You can't just willing nelly throw out the
butt and the hit and run. For people that have
never done it in their career, it's not gonna work.
It sounds good, but it's called executing. And once you
start executing stuff like that safety squeeze is sacrifice and
you get them down and you move runners along. There's
a lot of adrenaline that gets pumped through that clubhouse,
through that dugout during the game. I've been there, and

when people small ball, they've named it small ball now,
but it's really correct ball. It's how you play, care,
how we get it done. Yeah, it's great to hit.

It's great to to you know, that's always the fun
way to do. But now it's win the game. I
don't care how, I don't care. If you want it
standing on your head, find a way to win the game.
And at this point it's anything goes, anything goes, and

Would be my take. We got to find a way.
I don't care how we do it. We got to

They've they've shuffled the lineup a lot. I mean, cal Rawley,
was he hitting fourth today? By the way, I think
he was hitting fourth?

He was, he was. He was hitting eighth when I
was up in Seattle. He's hitting fourth today. Yesterday I
had a good day. He had a couple of walks,
uh smoked of all the left so he was hitting
It's just he was hitting eighth when I was up there.

But here's the thing.

They're they're trying right, They're they're adjusting the lineup, They're
moving guys all over the place, and it's just not
working right. I mean, we I we can talk about
the approach, but the lineup has certainly been shuffled around.
But dude, you mentioned seeing cal Boone when you were
up in Seattle. He's hitting a buck fifty nine, which,
if that holds, is going to be maybe the lowest
batting average ever for a qualified player in the modern

era of Major League Baseball. I mean, this is Look,
you don't like to use words like embarrassing to describe
cal Rawley because of how much we like the guy
and appreciate what he did a year ago. But this
is embarrassing, and it's getting to a point for me
where I'm concerned about where this is. Hadn't even in
the next year.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
Yeah, believe me, he's beyond humiliated. I we talked about
it when I was up there. The last thing I
want to do as a player on that ball club
right now, with what they've gone through last twenty games.
They won six of the last twenty, they won nine
out of their last thirty. The last thing on earth
you want to do is have that fifty year fifty
Greatest Players celebration. Oh yeah, great, No, these guys want
(08:54):
to play the game, hopefully win a game, get their
cars and go home and hid until things get better.
Speaker 5 (08:59):
And the fact that they had to come.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
Out, we felt we felt for him because we knew
what it's like being in that position. For cal Rawley,
you know, you got a feel for him. He's he's
taking he's taking responsibility for it. But at some point
it goes beyond that, and you know, I look at
the coaching staff, I look at Danny. You know, everybody's
you know, uh, social media calling for Danny's head. It's like, well,

last year he was he was eight outs away from
taking the Seattle Mariners to the first World Series in
franchise history. And now all of a sudden, everybody's, well,
what's Danny, Danny Wilson, This Danny Wilson that It's like,
what what you liked him a year ago? But now
he stinks? You know, you like you like Edgar one
of the greatest hitters I've ever played with. Kevin Seitzer's
(09:45):
very uh you know, he's got a huge track record
what he's done, and a year.
Speaker 5 (09:52):
Ago is great.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
Everything was going great, and now it's like no fire fire. Everybody, well,
what happened? They forget how to coach? No, they didn't
forget out a coach, of course not. I looked at it.
The Angels just fired a buddy of mine, Mike Maddocks,
who was on my staff in Texas last year. Texas
was number one in pitching a year ago. All of
a sudden, you go to Anaheim. It's a different crew,
it's a different talent level, and all of a sudden
(10:14):
he gets fired. What he did, Mike Maddox just become
a terrible pitching coach after twenty twenty five years one
of the most respected guys. Absolutely not has to do
with his guys weren't performing as players. And I say
this all the time. It's on us. It has nothing
to do with the coaches. It has nothing to do
with the manager, has nothing to do with the bench, coach,
front office.
Speaker 5 (10:35):
It's players not playing.
Speaker 4 (10:37):
And one time in my career, one time where I
could actually say the guy at the helm deserved some
criticism for how our season went. One time, that's it.
Minor leagues, big leagues, everything combined. I won't mention that year,
but one time I thought it was a factor. Other
than that, it's always the onus is always on the player.
(10:58):
Always when I was bad, it's that's why we won't
winning because I was bad and I knew it, and
what I was good, we were winning more games than
I knew. Yeah, I'm a big part of that. So
that's that's how it's going right now. And there's really
what do you do. You try everything, and you keep trying,
and you don't give up, and you keep playing because
that's what we do.
Speaker 5 (11:16):
We keep playing. One hundred and sixty two.
Speaker 6 (11:18):
What about a roster shake up. I mean, if Kate
Anderson was a hitter, I think he'd already be up
here starting.
Speaker 5 (11:24):
But he's not, oh the double a starter. Yeah, yeah,
But you do.
Speaker 6 (11:27):
Have guys like Las Monts. You guys guys like Michael
Arroyo waiting there that maybe they're not the number one
player in in minor league baseball like Kate Anderson is,
but they're they're top fifty, top thirty.
Speaker 3 (11:40):
Do you give them a shot?
Speaker 6 (11:41):
Well, when this team is still quote unquote in it, Well,
I thought I thought.
Speaker 5 (11:46):
A week ago when uh.
Speaker 4 (11:49):
Donovan came back, you know, Taylor Ward at the trade deadline.
He's hitting one fifty six since he's been here. I
thought that might be a little jolt. You gotta be
careful with the Emerson's of the world. I think Emerson
has a right, right future. He's twenty years old, but
I can already see it. I'm watching him on his
heels on defense now, and the offense is going to
(12:09):
defense because he's struggling. He came out of the gate
and he had a lot of success and things haven't
been going that great now. I'm seeing it affect his defense.
This kid's young. I mean, you've got to be careful.
If you make moves like that, you better be darned
confident that you're putting the right people in the right
place to succeed and they can handle it, because there's
going to be some struggling.
Speaker 5 (12:30):
So I'd be.
Speaker 4 (12:31):
Really careful with doing something like that at this point.
Is it going to make a big difference? I mean,
if you bring those guys up right now, is it
really going to electrify that clubhouse? I don't think it
is so for me. No, it doesn't mean I'm right,
you know, at this point, I'd kind of be up
for anything, But I don't know if that's that's really

going to be the solution to this.
Speaker 3 (12:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
Well, look, I mean I understand what you're saying about
the players being responsible.
Speaker 7 (12:57):
One.

I think a lot of people, by the way, would
absolutely agree with that. You know, and we've we've talked
about that, right that it's you know, the player, the manager,
general manager, president, baseball ops. Everybody plays their little role.
But when so many of these guys are struggling at
the same time, you're not gonna fire everybody, right, and
most of them are under contract for next year, Naylor
(13:18):
or Julio cal Rowley, all of them are all your
starting pitchers are right under contract next year. So I mean,
we can talk about what you would do and what
you think reality is going to end up being about
do you think Danny survives this? Do you think Danny
survives this in the next.
Speaker 4 (13:37):
Year if it finishes like right now? No, yeah, no,
and and and it's not you know, is it fair
to Danny? Absolutely not. But life isn't fair. My dad
told me that one time, Softy, life a fair. When
you figure that out, you can you can rest your
brain and move on. That's that's the that's the that's

the sad part of this, uh, because a lot of
guys that get fired. Yet Maggie Honis, who's the assistant
to the assistant hitting coach, get fired two weeks ago
for what right, all of a sudden does he stake?
Speaker 5 (14:12):
Did he have a falling out? I don't think nothing happened.
Speaker 4 (14:15):
It was just we've got to make a statement here,
And you're right as a business owner.
Speaker 5 (14:19):
You, as an owner.
Speaker 4 (14:20):
At the ball club, you have every right to hire
and fire whoever you want. You know, they did it
in Philadelphia and bring in Don Mattitt, and it went
good for a while. Now all of a sudden they're
scuffling a little bit. And you know, it always goes
like that, is you make a change and then if
things turn around, see that change was necessary.
Speaker 5 (14:37):
Sometimes that change holds up, sometimes it doesn't. So yes,
unfortunately that's the way the world.
Speaker 4 (14:44):
Life isn't fair, and yes, it continues to go this way,
whether it's your fault or not. If you're not a
player locked in, you get fired. And that's just the
way it is.
Speaker 6 (14:53):
Well, Brett, you were talking about col Emerson. Is like
they were reading your mind. We got a report that
Colt has just been an option back at the COMA
so rock rodden second basement coming up?
Speaker 5 (15:05):
Well when is he?
Speaker 6 (15:06):
Oh?

Okay, so somebody is coming up? When is when is
uh Crawford back? I was trying to find some how
is his how's he making his way through through the
through the guy?
Speaker 2 (15:16):
Yeah he was, he was originally I think on the
ten day. But he's going to be out a little
bit longer than that. But he can't hit either, don't
don't don't rely on him.
Speaker 4 (15:26):
Well, I'm just telling you, I'm just telling you Crawford
is a viable option to go back to short with
Emerson going down.
Speaker 5 (15:34):
It's it's tough, you know.

I I look at guys that are twenty years old,
get to the big leaks and just say, all right,
go get him.
Speaker 5 (15:40):
I'm in awe.

People that that start to finish, have no failure, just
take off.

It's amazing when you're twenty years old to do it

You know, I remember coming up twenty two to twenty three.
My head was spinning and I never had any had
any adversity in my life at the plate, and all
of a sudden, I'm hitting one ninety eight.

Going the big leagues is really hard.
Speaker 4 (16:00):
You know, when I was twenty two to twenty three,
I wasn't twenty twenty. I was a sophomore in high
school or in college. These guys are playing in the
big league. So I'm always a little bit hesitant when
I see that, because because we're very you know, our
minds are not formed yet, and you know, sometimes you
get to the big leagues and you get a little
reality check. You got to dig back down and figure
(16:22):
it out. I'm sure he will, He'll go down it's
probably best for him right now not to be in
this atmosphere around this. He needs to continue to develop,
and I think that's a good move for them. But
it's gonna be interesting to see what happens going future.
Going forward, I think Emerson is gonna be a big
part of this Mariner's future is gonna be the short
set up for years to come. But right now, they
got to find a way to win games.
Speaker 8 (16:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
Well see, I mean, I'm kind of maybe leaning towards
you that he'll figure it out. And I'm glad that
he got a cup of coffee. I mean, I know
he struggled when he was up here, but I don't
sense that it ruined him mentally. But if I'm wrong
and this put a seed of doubt into his head
that he carries with him for a while, there's going

to be reason to be critical of the Mariner front office.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
Right Yeah.
Speaker 4 (17:05):
But but but soft got another thing. That's another thing
I think about too, is it's at what point do
we get treated like men? You know, Yeah, we'd like
to if we have an entity, it's somebody that's very
valuable to us, and we put him out there and
he gets affected so bad that he can't recover. Is
that a guy really that was going to be a

big leaguer anyway? You know, you can think about it
that way. It's like, is that the guy you really
want heading your franchise going forward? To guy that can't
have a little adversity learn from it and come back.
That's why I think he will. He'll come back and
he'll be fine. I think big leaguers that are meant
to be long term big leaguers, they're predetermined. And I
don't think one incident or or one stretch or one
(17:47):
run when you first get getting your feet wet, uh,
changes you're what you're going to do in the future.
I think it's just it's a learning process. I hope
you learn for it. It's definitely an ego check and
and uh I've had play any of those. But I
think that if you're a guy that's going to be
affected by a little bit of failure at the beginning
of your big league career, you're probably not going to
(18:08):
be effective long term and you're not cut out to
be a big leaguer long term.
Speaker 5 (18:12):
So I look at it that way. I think it's
going to be just fine.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
Booney I get it, and that was going to be
my point that you know, look, I mean they may
have hung on to him in the minor leagues for
another year and a half and he may have struggled anyway,
right that That was exactly my point. But it's also
their job, partially their job, and it's a hard job
to do. It's a hard job to time. It is
a hard job to know when a guy is ready.
(18:35):
It is their job to put a guy in the
best position to succeed. And clearly cold Emerson was, you know,
at least stats wise, you may have been mentally ready
for it. I don't see him moping around, right, I'm
not seeing all that stuff from Colin Emerson, so I'm
not overly concerned about it.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
But let's face it, man, one of the reasons why
the Mariners have gone down the.
Speaker 2 (18:55):
Tank is because they've got gigantic holes in their lineup
where they can't hit, and shortstop has been one of them.
Because since the second of July, he's hitting a buck
fifty seven with a five eighty one oh ps a
bomb in four RBIs man. So again, we'll see what happens.
Hopefully it won't break them the way that you're talking about.

needs a break. So cold Emerson going down to Triple A.

The bigger piece of news Adam Schefter reporting that the
Seahawks are signing former Lion cornerback Terry on Arnold.

And I'm telling you what.

I went home last night, Dick and I watched that
Hard Knox and you and I were talking about off
the air with Abe Lucas And I don't know if
you noticed this or not, Jackson, but the end of
Hard Knocks, there was the cliffhanger with Arnold working out
in the indoor facility and they cut it off right
as if to say more to come next week. And
then I'm thinking about the spin rate segment they did
on Darnold. Why did they have to spend ninety seconds

of his ball in the air? And I'm asking myself,
did they cut something out that they want to save
for next week? And they went back and just found
some b roll of Donald's football to fill that extra
time so they could get to the big news next
week when Hard Knocks hits the air. So that and
then you saw John Schneider telling Mike McDonald that he

might be ready for the preseason and McDonald's face lights
up like a Christmas tree when he when he heard
that news. Meg, you really got the vibe. But something

at McDonald and said, we're here and he might be
ready for the preseason, and Mike's like, all right, like
he's talking about his own guy, right.

I mean that that, to me is what really gave
it away.

But in the end, guys, I think this is awesome
for the Seahawks. I think Greg Bell, you know, hit
the nail on the head that they just wanted to
be first and line in case he's ready to go.
He may end up on the commissioner's list for something,
no matter what he may it suspended. We all know
that Roger Goodell doesn't necessarily listen to a jury or
a judge before he suspends people. So who knows if
this guy will be able to play in the opener.

But if here's the thing, if right Jackson and Dick,
if he is cleared to play, yes, the Seahawks, you
could have argued that Terry on Arnold would have been
one of the top two or three available corners on
the free agent market.

Big time. They've just got him. He would just got him.

He would have gotten a bigger deal guys than any
of the dbs that left Seattle. I think, just based
on what he has done. I also think that this
is important, I think for everybody to understand. And I'm
sure that the discourse on all the social media sites
right now is at a insane temperature. There was like
a half dozen teams who were interested in this guy

and bringing him in for visits or just you know,
clearly on the docket for him to go, you know,
check a look at. And there aren't going to be
this many franchises looking at the guy, all who had
done independent investigations with all their security people and all
their investigators to check out his history. That wouldn't have happened,
and they wouldn't be interested a half dozen teams if

he was actually I think truly guilty and going to
be in big trouble for what's being accused.

Kim right what the hell of we know? Let's ask
you with us right now here, we got breaking news,

multiple reports now Rapaport Schefter, the whole gang all reporting
that Terry and Arnold is gonna sign with the Seahawks.

What do you make of a big guy? Your thoughts go, well.

I just think it speaks to a few things. Number one,
I think that there's some some lack of depth at corner.
Arguably the weakest position on the football team is corner
at least the room. So there's an opportunity to get
a guy for next to nothing from a talent standpoint.

And the way the league is, you know, we all
kind of know this, and I had coaches dance around
the issue, even to some extent. Don James John Robinson,
who's in the College Hall of Fame. When I got
drafted as a rookie to the Rams, you know, all
these coaches, you know, I was a journeyman bouncing around

the league, and everybody kind of skirted around the topic.
And then Jimmy Johnson just finally was the first time
I kind of exada, it's about time somebody said it
the way it is. And what Jimmy Johnson said to
the TeV he held his two hands up and he says, listen,
every one of you guys is on a scale. Both
hands He goes if you're up and he lifts his

one hand, if you're if your talent and what you
bring to the team is up here, then we're gonna
be able to deal with And he's doing the other hand,
he's doing these scales. You know, we'll essentially he said,
we'll deal with uh, your you know, your blowney based
on what you provide. And he says, he goes, and
I remember him saying, there's no way that I'm that

we're gonna have Troy Achean shake Troy Aikman and some
backup left guard. That's exactly what he said. I remember thinking,
who's our backup left guard? He goes, there's no way
we're evaluating Troy Aikman and our backup left guard in
the same capacity.

So he just laid it doubt.

And and what Jimmy Johnson told in very blunt terms
is exactly what we just saw that the Seahawks view this,
this corner of former first round draft pick as having
a high ceiling. You've you've got in in uh Scott
coach Scott a guy that uh that coached him in Alabama, Uh,

you know, knows enough about his personality. Jalen Milroe. I
think they they feel confident in their due diligence. How
how high is the due diligence we don't know, but
the threshold is right back to Jimmy Johnson. It's it's
what is this guy bringing compared to what they have?
And they feel satisfied that that. Certainly they feel satisfied

that he's not going to be on trial, uh, you know,
to go to prison for his life, because this would
make no sense. So you know what, we'll just have
to learn what they've learned, uh, in order for them
to uh to to to measure out the scale that
I described, the Jimmy Johnson scale and and sign this
young man.

Well, you've always said, ye know, you will do hardcore
tape study once the Seahawks sign a guy.

I think in Hard Knocks, did John Schneider not compare
him to Spoon? So if he has that type of
competitiveness and practice work ethic, I think that's absolutely a
element to this discussion that cannot be ignored. And then

the other part is John Snider and don't we don't know.
I'm just gonna theorize in kind of almost what my
gut tells me, if Schneider wants this more than Mike McDonald,
it Mike McDonald has to sign off, like, let's not
John Schneider is not going to give Mike McDonald player
that Mike McDonald just doesn't want.

But it would be logically.

Incoherent to say that they want both want him exactly
the same. Mike gut tells me Schneider wants them more
than McDonald. You saw in Hard Knocks where what McDonald
is saying is, hey, we want warriors in the garden.
That he was trying to say, we want you guys
to We're always ready, you know, at any time to
go throw down and be gladiators at any time. But

we're great men in the community, great husbands, great great citizens,
and what have you. So McDonald is preaching that message
to his players, and who's closer to the team from
an interaction standpoint, interpersonal communication standpoint, obviously, Mike McDonald, John
Schneider is a couple of layers removed. So it's Mike

McDonald who has to look his players in the eye
on a day to day basis and be able to
defend the moves that the organization makes. John Schneider can
be up in his office looking at the tape with
Terry and Arnold looking at the tape of his corners
and saying, man, we've got some holes. We got to
fill these, you know. But there's some layers there that

I think are part of discussion. Fascinating, but we'll take
it from there. I'm gonna I'll give you a lot
better settsment of Arnold within twenty four hours.

Well, he was the second corner taken in the twenty
four draft. The first was Quinn Mitchell, who went to Philadelphia.

So the first corner back of the twenty three draft
in the second corner of the twenty four draft.

Correct, both playing for the Seahawks unless the guy's in prison,
which we'll find out, which we'll find out here. Great stuff, man, Thanks,
but we'll talk it down guys, right, Okay, Yeah, Well
here's the deal. So multiple reports, Chefter wrapped the whole deal,
reporting the Hawks they're going to sign Terry and Arnold,
former Alabama Crimson Tide player, former Lion. He was released
obviously by the LIS when these charges came down. I
(34:03):
did text Ryan Fowler, by the way, or buddy in Alabama,
and I asked him about Terry and Arnold. Not a
bad guy, but a total dumbass, is what Fowler said.
Saban kept him in check with Miss Terry. She was
his mom in Tuscaloosa. They had a unique relationship. Never
seen her get this close to a player. Something tell
(34:26):
me that was a strategy, right because he needed that
person in his life, is what Ryan Fowler says. Just
a little flavor from Tuscaloosa. But the charges. Prosecutors say
that what happened is that Arnold and his friends were robbed.
Two hundred thousand dollars in cash and personal property were
taken from an Airbnb he was renting. Investigators then found
(34:50):
no evidence linking the victims to the theft, but they
claim that sixth associates of Arnold's carried out a physical assault,
holding and pistol whipping the victims at an apartment, while
one co defendant allegedly live stream the attack and shared
the updates in a group chat.

Where Arnold directed the actions.
Speaker 2 (35:12):
So those are the accusations against him, and the Seahawks
are gonna sign the guy right. Clearly, we all believe
that they've done some due diligence. You know, John Schneider
is not just gonna go on the internet and read
about it and say, well, that doesn't sound that bad.

Let's sign the guy.

They've got their people. So I think the question that becomes,

had five picks for the Crimson tied Hugh last year

and everybody fell off defensively.

Darius Slay fell off.

A little one corner, James Bradbury fell off even more.
And so here you have in Terry and Arnold. This
guy was recruited Alabama, four star recruiting number three safety
in the in the class, and such a good athlete
that he actually talked to basketball coach Nato.

It's about the possibility of playing on the Bama basketball team, right,
an idea about that.

But he ends up at corner.

And you know, he's only five eleven and three quarters
and about a buck ninety's just under buck ninety, So
that doesn't scream safety him to me whatsoever. So he's
a corner. He specialized great recognition. I think in part
because he was a safety. I think he understands, uh,
you know, Alabama has been a man to man team.
And it's very interesting to me that here they got

two number one corners and and they're playing more zone
but above average defender, but a smart and haiti guy
and communicates with the rest of the secondary if there's
a concern he has only ordinary top end speed is
flying twenty of one point nine to one, Meaning when
you're forty after you've gone twenty yards right one point

That's that's slower than it needs to be. That's that's
a problem for makeup speed.

know what to do. The staff members are pulling their
hair out. They don't know what to do. You know,
this is a team not too long ago was they
were a few outs away from a World Series, and
right now it's about as tough as it gets. The
only the only solace they might be able to have
here is.

You go into the season and things are kind of going,
you know, not as well as the Mariners would hope,
but they're they're right their top of the division.

They're just waiting to get hot.

And the Houston Astros were nowhere to be seen, and
I thought, it's finally over that Houston Astro run. They're
dead and buried. I thought the Boston Red Sox in
the West or in the East, who I thought were
gonna win the division this year. Two months in, my
buddies are laughing at me for picking the Boston Red Sox.
So that's the only the hope I hold out for
the Seattle Mariners is something as transitional as that San

Diego Padres at the deadline, they make a huge deal.
All of a sudden, they're right there, hot as a firecracker.
Does Seattle have that in them? You know, talent wise, absolutely,
but it's gonna take that type of run. They're only
three and a half out in the wildcar, but I
was looking they got to skip that.
Speaker 5 (04:47):
They've got eight teams in front of them.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
You know, it's one thing to be three and a
half out with a team that you've got a piggy
bat piggy, you know, a leapfrog. But you're talking eight
and that three and a half.

It's kind of a misleading.

I think ten days ago, twelve days ago, they were
leading the division, and all of a sudden they go
on a run like this, Houston's hot. Texas is just
kind of playing five hundred like they have all year.
They're still there in the division. It's just I don't know.
I don't even know what to make of it. I
don't have an opinion. I've racked my brain about this team.
Eventually they're gonna come a lot, and they just don't.

And they're just not hitting the ball, and it looks
like it's something that's gonna be a year long. Hopefully not,
but it isn't looking.

hitting and running with guy the correct person in the

batter's box. You can't just willing nelly throw out the
butt and the hit and run. For people that have
never done it in their career, it's not gonna work.
It sounds good, but it's called executing. And once you
start executing stuff like that safety squeeze is sacrifice and
you get them down and you move runners along. There's
a lot of adrenaline that gets pumped through that clubhouse,
through that dugout during the game. I've been there, and

when people small ball, they've named it small ball now,
but it's really correct ball. It's how you play, care,
how we get it done. Yeah, it's great to hit.

if that holds, is going to be maybe the lowest
batting average ever for a qualified player in the modern

era of Major League Baseball. I mean, this is Look,
you don't like to use words like embarrassing to describe
cal Rawley because of how much we like the guy
and appreciate what he did a year ago. But this
is embarrassing, and it's getting to a point for me
where I'm concerned about where this is. Hadn't even in
the next year.

Yeah, believe me, he's beyond humiliated. I we talked about
it when I was up there. The last thing I
want to do as a player on that ball club
right now, with what they've gone through last twenty games.
They won six of the last twenty, they won nine
out of their last thirty. The last thing on earth
you want to do is have that fifty year fifty

to play the game, hopefully win a game, get their

you know, uh, social media calling for Danny's head. It's like, well,

last year he was he was eight outs away from
taking the Seattle Mariners to the first World Series in
franchise history. And now all of a sudden, everybody's, well,
what's Danny, Danny Wilson, This Danny Wilson that It's like,
what what you liked him a year ago? But now
he stinks? You know, you like you like Edgar one
of the greatest hitters I've ever played with. Kevin Seitzer's

very uh you know, he's got a huge track record
what he's done, and a year.

Everything was going great, and now it's like no fire fire. Everybody, well,
what happened? They forget how to coach? No, they didn't
forget out a coach, of course not. I looked at it.
The Angels just fired a buddy of mine, Mike Maddocks,
who was on my staff in Texas last year. Texas
was number one in pitching a year ago. All of
a sudden, you go to Anaheim. It's a different crew,
it's a different talent level, and all of a sudden

he gets fired. What he did, Mike Maddox just become
a terrible pitching coach after twenty twenty five years one
of the most respected guys. Absolutely not has to do
with his guys weren't performing as players. And I say
this all the time. It's on us. It has nothing
to do with the coaches. It has nothing to do
with the manager, has nothing to do with the bench, coach,
front office.

It's players not playing.

And one time in my career, one time where I
could actually say the guy at the helm deserved some
criticism for how our season went. One time, that's it.
Minor leagues, big leagues, everything combined. I won't mention that year,
but one time I thought it was a factor. Other
than that, it's always the onus is always on the player.

Always when I was bad, it's that's why we won't
winning because I was bad and I knew it, and
what I was good, we were winning more games than
I knew. Yeah, I'm a big part of that. So
that's that's how it's going right now. And there's really
what do you do. You try everything, and you keep trying,
and you don't give up, and you keep playing because
that's what we do.

I can already see it. I'm watching him on his
heels on defense now, and the offense is going to

defense because he's struggling. He came out of the gate
and he had a lot of success and things haven't
been going that great now. I'm seeing it affect his defense.
This kid's young. I mean, you've got to be careful.
If you make moves like that, you better be darned
confident that you're putting the right people in the right
place to succeed and they can handle it, because there's
going to be some struggling.

Really careful with doing something like that at this point.
Is it going to make a big difference? I mean,
if you bring those guys up right now, is it

most of them are under contract for next year, Naylor

starting pitchers are right under contract next year. So I mean,
we can talk about what you would do and what
you think reality is going to end up being about
do you think Danny survives this? Do you think Danny
survives this in the next.

and and and it's not you know, is it fair
to Danny? Absolutely not. But life isn't fair. My dad

guys that get fired. Yet Maggie Honis, who's the assistant

You know, when I was twenty two to twenty three,
I wasn't twenty twenty. I was a sophomore in high
school or in college. These guys are playing in the
big league. So I'm always a little bit hesitant when
I see that, because because we're very you know, our
minds are not formed yet, and you know, sometimes you
get to the big leagues and you get a little
reality check. You got to dig back down and figure

it out. I'm sure he will, He'll go down it's
probably best for him right now not to be in
this atmosphere around this. He needs to continue to develop,
and I think that's a good move for them. But
it's gonna be interesting to see what happens going future.
Going forward, I think Emerson is gonna be a big
part of this Mariner's future is gonna be the short
set up for years to come. But right now, they
got to find a way to win games.

Well see, I mean, I'm kind of maybe leaning towards
you that he'll figure it out. And I'm glad that
he got a cup of coffee. I mean, I know
he struggled when he was up here, but I don't

that he carries with him for a while, there's going

to be reason to be critical of the Mariner front office.

I think about too, is it's at what point do

that a guy really that was going to be a

big leaguer anyway? You know, you can think about it
that way. It's like, is that the guy you really
want heading your franchise going forward? To guy that can't
have a little adversity learn from it and come back.
That's why I think he will. He'll come back and
he'll be fine. I think big leaguers that are meant
to be long term big leaguers, they're predetermined. And I
don't think one incident or or one stretch or one

run when you first get getting your feet wet, uh,
changes you're what you're going to do in the future.
I think it's just it's a learning process. I hope
you learn for it. It's definitely an ego check and
and uh I've had play any of those. But I
think that if you're a guy that's going to be
affected by a little bit of failure at the beginning
of your big league career, you're probably not going to
(18:08):
be effective long term and you're not cut out to
be a big leaguer long term.

So I look at it that way. I think it's
going to be just fine.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
Booney I get it, and that was going to be
my point that you know, look, I mean they may
have hung on to him in the minor leagues for
another year and a half and he may have struggled anyway,
right that That was exactly my point. But it's also
their job, partially their job, and it's a hard job
to do. It's a hard job to time. It is
a hard job to know when a guy is ready.

It is their job to put a guy in the
best position to succeed. And clearly cold Emerson was, you know,
at least stats wise, you may have been mentally ready
for it. I don't see him moping around, right, I'm
not seeing all that stuff from Colin Emerson, so I'm
not overly concerned about it.

But let's face it, man, one of the reasons why
the Mariners have gone down the.

Tank is because they've got gigantic holes in their lineup
where they can't hit, and shortstop has been one of them.

I mean that that, to me is what really gave

But in the end, guys, I think this is awesome
for the Seahawks. I think Greg Bell, you know, hit
the nail on the head that they just wanted to
be first and line in case he's ready to go.
He may end up on the commissioner's list for something,
no matter what he may it suspended. We all know
that Roger Goodell doesn't necessarily listen to a jury or
a judge before he suspends people. So who knows if
this guy will be able to play in the opener.

But if here's the thing, if right Jackson and Dick,
if he is cleared to play, yes, the Seahawks, you
could have argued that Terry on Arnold would have been
one of the top two or three available corners on
the free agent market.

He would have gotten a bigger deal guys than any
of the dbs that left Seattle. I think, just based
on what he has done. I also think that this
is important, I think for everybody to understand. And I'm

and bringing him in for visits or just you know,
clearly on the docket for him to go, you know,
check a look at. And there aren't going to be
this many franchises looking at the guy, all who had
done independent investigations with all their security people and all
their investigators to check out his history. That wouldn't have happened,
and they wouldn't be interested a half dozen teams if

he was actually I think truly guilty and going to
be in big trouble for what's being accused.

I think that there's some some lack of depth at corner.
Arguably the weakest position on the football team is corner

kind of know this, and I had coaches dance around
the issue, even to some extent. Don James John Robinson,
who's in the College Hall of Fame. When I got
drafted as a rookie to the Rams, you know, all
these coaches, you know, I was a journeyman bouncing around

the league, and everybody kind of skirted around the topic.
And then Jimmy Johnson just finally was the first time
I kind of exada, it's about time somebody said it
the way it is. And what Jimmy Johnson said to
the TeV he held his two hands up and he says, listen,
every one of you guys is on a scale. Both
hands He goes if you're up and he lifts his

one hand, if you're if your talent and what you
bring to the team is up here, then we're gonna
be able to deal with And he's doing the other hand,
he's doing these scales. You know, we'll essentially he said,
we'll deal with uh, your you know, your blowney based
on what you provide. And he says, he goes, and
I remember him saying, there's no way that I'm that

we're gonna have Troy Achean shake Troy Aikman and some
backup left guard. That's exactly what he said. I remember thinking,
who's our backup left guard? He goes, there's no way
we're evaluating Troy Aikman and our backup left guard in
the same capacity.

So he just laid it doubt.

And and what Jimmy Johnson told in very blunt terms
is exactly what we just saw that the Seahawks view this,
this corner of former first round draft pick as having

you know, knows enough about his personality. Jalen Milroe. I
think they they feel confident in their due diligence. How
how high is the due diligence we don't know, but
the threshold is right back to Jimmy Johnson. It's it's
what is this guy bringing compared to what they have?
And they feel satisfied that that. Certainly they feel satisfied

that he's not going to be on trial, uh, you know,
to go to prison for his life, because this would
make no sense. So you know what, we'll just have
to learn what they've learned, uh, in order for them
to uh to to to measure out the scale that
I described, the Jimmy Johnson scale and and sign this
young man.

I think in Hard Knocks, did John Schneider not compare
him to Spoon? So if he has that type of
competitiveness and practice work ethic, I think that's absolutely a
element to this discussion that cannot be ignored. And then

I'm just gonna theorize in kind of almost what my
gut tells me, if Schneider wants this more than Mike McDonald,
it Mike McDonald has to sign off, like, let's not
John Schneider is not going to give Mike McDonald player
that Mike McDonald just doesn't want.

But it would be logically.

Incoherent to say that they want both want him exactly
the same. Mike gut tells me Schneider wants them more
than McDonald. You saw in Hard Knocks where what McDonald
is saying is, hey, we want warriors in the garden.
That he was trying to say, we want you guys
to We're always ready, you know, at any time to
go throw down and be gladiators at any time. But

we're great men in the community, great husbands, great great citizens,
and what have you. So McDonald is preaching that message
to his players, and who's closer to the team from
an interaction standpoint, interpersonal communication standpoint, obviously, Mike McDonald, John
Schneider is a couple of layers removed. So it's Mike

McDonald who has to look his players in the eye
on a day to day basis and be able to
defend the moves that the organization makes. John Schneider can
be up in his office looking at the tape with

former Alabama Crimson Tide player, former Lion. He was released
obviously by the LIS when these charges came down. I

and I asked him about Terry and Arnold. Not a
bad guy, but a total dumbass, is what Fowler said.
Saban kept him in check with Miss Terry. She was
his mom in Tuscaloosa. They had a unique relationship. Never
seen her get this close to a player. Something tell

me that was a strategy, right because he needed that
person in his life, is what Ryan Fowler says. Just
a little flavor from Tuscaloosa. But the charges. Prosecutors say
that what happened is that Arnold and his friends were robbed.
Two hundred thousand dollars in cash and personal property were
taken from an Airbnb he was renting. Investigators then found

no evidence linking the victims to the theft, but they
claim that sixth associates of Arnold's carried out a physical assault,
holding and pistol whipping the victims at an apartment, while
one co defendant allegedly live stream the attack and shared
the updates in a group chat.

Where Arnold directed the actions.
Speaker 2 (35:12):
So those are the accusations against him, and the Seahawks
are gonna sign the guy right. Clearly, we all believe
that they've done some due diligence. You know, John Schneider
is not just gonna go on the internet and read
about it and say, well, that doesn't sound that bad.

Let's sign the guy.
Speaker 6 (35:27):

They've got their people. So I think the question that becomes,
like your poll, are we okay with us?

I'm okay with it again because I think that multiple
if again, if half a dozen NFL teams are all
doing their due diligens and they have some of the
best investigators I think available in this country to do
their investigations right, and if multiple again, like if all
those teams came to the conclusion of yeah, let's let's

take a look at this guy, then I am personally
okay with it. I actually do have since we're on
the topic, I know we're late. This is the big story.

and everybody fell off defensively.

And so here you have in Terry and Arnold. This
guy was recruited Alabama, four star recruiting number three safety
in the in the class, and such a good athlete
that he actually talked to basketball coach Nato.
Speaker 3 (37:00):
It's about the possibility of playing on the Bama basketball team, right,
an idea about that.
Speaker 5 (37:05):
But he ends up at corner.
Speaker 7 (37:08):
And you know, he's only five eleven and three quarters
and about a buck ninety's just under buck ninety, So
that doesn't scream safety him to me whatsoever. So he's
a corner. He specialized great recognition. I think in part
because he was a safety. I think he understands, uh,
you know, Alabama has been a man to man team.
And it's very interesting to me that here they got

two number one corners and and they're playing more zone
but above average defender, but a smart and haiti guy
and communicates with the rest of the secondary if there's
a concern he has only ordinary top end speed is
flying twenty of one point nine to one, Meaning when
you're forty after you've gone twenty yards right one point

That's that's slower than it needs to be. That's that's
a problem for makeup speed.

Well, there's no part of me during that mock draft
that thought two years later he'd be a Seahawk. And
here he is, Terry on Arnold who went twenty fourth
to the Lions in the in the draft that was
our mock draft.

from Dallas, right right, that that they got. But he's
