Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's time for our weekly conversation with legendary sports writer
Larry Stone, brought to you by the Ram Restaurant and Brewery, Bigger,
better and fresher since nineteen seventy one, with eight digit
sound locations from Marysville to Lacey and everywhere in between.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
There's a Ram there you now with Softy and Dick.
Here's Larry Stone.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
Righty five oh five on a busy Wednesday night, right
here on ninety three three cage AARFM. Great to have
this guy on the air with us. We missed him
last week. He was not with us, and there was
something missing from the show. There was a hole in
my heart and now we're getting it filled with our friend,
former Times columnist Larry Stone.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Larry, how are you pal?

Speaker 4 (00:39):
I'm doing good. There was a hole in my heart
too as well. I just I wasn't quite the same
on Wednesday.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Sorry, Well, you just text me anytime at night, you know,
nine ten o'clock you missed me, Just text me the
secret code and I'll go downstairs and call you back
right away.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
So I asked Dick this question.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
I thought we'd get some on text, but maybe we
just babbled for too long and get to them. Should we,
as Mariner fans for the rest of the way be
more encouraged or discouraged about the final month and a
half of the season.

Speaker 4 (01:11):
Probably encouraged. I mean, I guess you can make that
determination when it's over whether you should have been encouraged
or discouraged. But I think the fact that they got
those those two new bats in a Rose Arena and
Turner and they got you know, Julio back, I think

(01:35):
moderately encouraged. But you know, during that series with the Mets,
when they just crushed the Mets, I was I was
saying to myself, how is this team not twenty games
over five hundred and with a ten game lead, with
that pitching staff, And it's just a it's just on
mind boggling that they're just hovering where they are just

(01:56):
a little bit over five hundred. They've lost all of
the lead. It's just a testament to how flawed that
offense is. It's still deeply flawed, even with those new guys. So, uh,
you know, it's still all there for him. You know.
I heard you say in the as I was waiting
to come on that it was a good thing that
that Boston's leading Texas, but I disagree. The Mariners are

(02:18):
eight games up on Texas, they're only a game behind Boston.
And the wildcard your right card.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
You're right, yeah, you're right, yep.

Speaker 4 (02:25):
Yeah, I think the wildcard is is also an avenue.
You know, it doesn't look like the Astros they're ever
going to lose again, so they only have two teams
to pass for the wildcard, Boston in Kansas City, so
you know they could they could still lose out to
Houston and sneak in with a wildcard, But you wanted
to get that home playoff series, which you know they

(02:50):
play so much better at home, but moderately encouraged, but
still danger signs all over the place.

Speaker 5 (02:56):
I just think the most the best chance of happening
for the marriage, I think is to stay in it
all the way. They don't get way up, they don't
get way down. They're within a couple of games in
that last series, and they probably fall short, kind of
as similar to what we saw last year. If that
is the scenario, Larry, we were just talking about this
in the last segment.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
We hear you taking us.

Speaker 5 (03:14):
If that's the exact scenario that plays out like twenty
twenty three, did what is the message that Jerry Depoto
gives us right after the season if they win, you know,
they're still they still win eighty seven eighty eight games,
but they fall just short.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
What is the message he gives us?

Speaker 4 (03:31):
Well, that would be for the third time in four
years if they would fall just short between eighty eight
you know, around that eighty seven to ninety wins. Yeah,
I'm sure the message he would give is we're we're
right there, you know, we're boys to do it. If
in that scenario, I'm not so sure he's going to

(03:51):
be around to give a message. You know, this would
be a team that would have blown a ten game lead,
and the culprit would be in a lot of ways
the signings in the offseason that didn't do anything to
help this offense. So, you know, I think jobs are
on the line here for sure. Probably you know, if

(04:12):
they if they flame out, I think both Service and
the Poto their jobs are very much a jeopardy.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
Well, we had Jerry Brewer on last week from Peri.
He was enjoying a baguette at a croissant on the
air with us, and we asked him last week on Thursday, right, Dick,
Was it appropriate last Thursday and the Mariners were I
think tied for first at that point in time, Larry
a week ago, is it appropriate right now to start
having the discussion if they do miss the playoffs? What

(04:43):
do we do with Jerry and Scott Service? And he said, yes,
I think it is appropriate, And it sounds like you
think it is appropriate too to start having those discussions.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
Yeah. I mean you've got to see how it plays out,
and they could win the World Series. You know, look
foolish to have the prosis because the Mets series, I
think really exemplified what we've all been saying forever that
you know, if this team gets in, look out, that's
what damage they could do. This was a playoffs, you know,
borderline playoff National league team that just got throttled, you know,

(05:18):
as the Phillies did for two out of three. So
they can be dangerous. But yeah, I mean this they
didn't make any bones about it going into the season,
that they they thought they were capable of winning the division,
that everything was on the table, that this was the
team that they had built, the team that was ready
to take that next step, and again that the ten

(05:41):
game lead may turn out to be. You know, if
they don't make the postseason, that's just something glaring that
you could point to. This team was up ten games,
didn't finish the deal. So uh, you know, I think
I think that both those it's hard to imagine one
coming back without the don't you think. I mean, it's

(06:05):
certainly it's almost impossible to imagine Scott coming back with
a new general manager, you know, if Jerry is fired.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
I agree, I'm not sure about.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
The Yeah, yeah, it's more likely that Scott gets fired
and Jerry stays versus Jerry fired in Scott's days exactly well.

Speaker 4 (06:23):
And because I mean, if you fired the GM, you know,
president of Baseball operations, that person is a you know,
it's going to want to bring in his own guy.
So it's it's the package deal in that situation.

Speaker 5 (06:33):
And we're being and you alluded to it a few
moments ago, we are kind of being a prisoner of
the moment. We are letting one fifteen to one loss
almost feel like four losses, right because prior to the
fifteen to one loss, they won four Cans in a row,
including a twelve one win.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
On national televice. But it's also eleven and eleven the
second half of the year. They're a mediocre ball club
since the Al Star.

Speaker 5 (06:57):
But had they my point is, had they won yesterday,
what would be the tenor of the entire show.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
I would be a little different. But it's they didn't, right, right,
they didn't. They got they got hammered.

Speaker 5 (07:07):
But but Larry, we were saying over the weekend, you know,
we were tweeting about Victor Roeblaze and his signing and
we were like, well, hey, look at this they got.
They've locked up their outfield for two three years now
with Julio, Victor Roeblace and a Rosa Raina. To talk
about them deciding to give him the contract, because it
certainly appears like they're giving him the shot to be

(07:28):
a long term starting player.

Speaker 4 (07:31):
Yeah, I thought it was a good move, Dick. It
wasn't prohibitively expensive even if he doesn't work out, and
look at his numbers in August he's hitting about one
to seventy, So you know, I mean, there is a
school of thought that you got the best months that
you're going to get out of Victor Roplass. And then
it was that it may have been premature to walk
him up, but I disagree. At worst, he's going to

(07:52):
be a fourth outfielder, a good fourth outfielder. He's not
being paid like a front line starter. So uh, you know,
two years, nine million in the scheme of things is
a pretty modest salary, So even if it doesn't work out,
you're not crippled by that signing. But if he's a
guy that we've seen for the last month plus, uh,

(08:17):
then then that's a dynamic outfield with a rosen Arena
Rodriguez and robe Blist that you could really move forward with.
And then you could pinpoint your off season get get
some power bats on the corners, and that's clearly what
they're going to have to do. And you can see
the sort of the seeds for for for me, be
a more preductive offense next year with Cole Young their

(08:41):
hot shot prospect, you know, knocking on the door for
a job probably at some point during the season.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
Yeah, I have no problem with it.

Speaker 3 (08:49):
I think you're exactly right if it turns out great,
if not sell two more beers a week and you
pay Victor Robless's salary, So either a great move by
Jerry potentially getting the outfield set as Dick said for
two more years. I thought it was a really really
good move. In some ways, I kind of felt bad
for Victor that maybe he's not making more money. If
he keeps this up, he may be completely underpaid by
this time of year from now.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
But Larry Stone with us courtesy of the RAM.

Speaker 3 (09:12):
And you know the Julio Rodriguez thing, he's not healthy.

Speaker 2 (09:15):
He doesn't look healthy. You can see him limping around.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
Steven SUSA kind of had a little rant on Monday
about a lack of a rehabit signment for him. So
he was shocked that there was no rehab assignment for Julio.
If he was one hundred percent healthy, he'd be playing
in the outfield, and he's not.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
Did they rush him back? Maybe too early? In your mind?

Speaker 4 (09:34):
You know, I kind of think so I kind of
agree with Steven And you wonder just who was making
the call there. You know, I wasn't around there and
not around anymore. But from what I've read and heard,
it was kind of Julio wanting to be on national

(09:55):
television showcase on national television. Well he got a showcase, right,
you know, aller for five with five strikeouts that you
know that that's not good for the profile of the
the resume. Uh. And yeah, he was out long enough
that usually you get a you get a rehabban. Obviously
his timing was off, you know, didn't it didn't hurt

(10:17):
him in that game because they so many other people
did damage. But uh, and I just feel you know,
a little uneasy and that thick from the Marritors standpoint.
You know, he was on second base earlier in this game.
You know, if there's a hit and he's got to score,
you know, is he gonna is he gonna put pressure
on that ankle, and and if he's not, you know,

(10:38):
if he just kind of trots it around and doesn't score,
that hurts the team. So uh, it just seems like, yeah,
it is premature. But then again, it's a path that
could hit the ball out. He almost hit it. He
almost hit the ball out, and he is to the
track today, So I understand you want that bad in there,
but uh, you know, just just maybe taking another week

(10:59):
might have been prudent.

Speaker 5 (11:00):
Laras so joining us our weekly Conversation brought to you
by the Ram Restaurant Brewery. Lara, I'd love to get
your take on the Olympics because I think I fall
in line with the masses because the reviews and the
ratings have been off the charts for the Olympic. I
think it's it's been as compelling an Olympic games as
I can remember in recent in recent memory.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
What did you think and did you have a favorite
highlight or two?

Speaker 4 (11:26):
Yeah, I agree with you. It was very compelling. There
was I loved the backdrop of of all the sites
in Paris, you know, the beach volleyball at the foot
of the Eiffel Tower, and and some events at Versailles
and that sort of thing. You know, that was great spectacle.
You know, I we're right down to the very end.

(11:48):
I really enjoyed the two Gold Metal basketball games. Steph
Curry going, you know, epic, epic finish for him, that
one shot with two guys in his face with one
you know, I've seen the I've watched the replay of
that about twenty times. I figure out how he did it.
And the women's game going right down to the wire
at one point game when when the French woman didn't

(12:11):
step back and make it a three pointer.

Speaker 5 (12:14):
A former Storm player, by the way, Larry, former Storm player,
to hit that too.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
That wasn't a three.

Speaker 4 (12:19):
Yeah, yeah, I remember her, And didn't she sit out
a season so she could be eligible for the Olympics. Yeah.
And then the you know, just the kind of the
quirky things, like the Hungarian shooter who looked like, you know,
he could be a grandpa. Who would you know that guy?

(12:40):
And the and the the pommel horse, the guy with
glasses for the US. I enjoy this, but I probably
the one ter dash was my favorite event because that's
I love that event anyway. It was so so close,
despite the despite the announcement blowing all on that I

(13:04):
was as confused as everyone as anyone else. Would you know,
he gave it to the Jamaican and then Lyles was
dancing around like he had won, and I didn't know
what the heck was going on. But you know, that's
to me, that's a highlight event every Olympics. Fastest man
in the world and it was a spectacular race, So
I'd probably rate that number one.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (13:24):
I thought Steph Curry down the stretch against France was unbelievable.
I mean, to me, that was almost the highlight of
the whole thing for me. But you know, it's funny
that LA's got it in twenty twenty eight, and they're
bringing back a bunch of sports. Baseball's coming back in
twenty twenty eight. Softball's coming back, And I was actually stunned,
guys that cricket has not been a part of this
for one hundred years. For as big as cricket is

(13:45):
around the world, to not have it be in the
Olympics is actually surprising. But what's your take on baseball
coming back and how the major leagues handles all that
in four years from now.

Speaker 4 (13:58):
Yeah, I know there's a lot of debate about whether
they should just halt the season and let the pros play.
I think that I just don't think that's going to
happen from from what I've heard from man for it
in in the past. It's just logistically it just just
doesn't work. Uh. There's really no great time for an
international baseball tournament. I mean, I love the World Baseball Classic,

(14:21):
but it's before it's early in spring training, when guys
aren't in shape. Even if it was in the middle
of the season, you're not Teams are not going to
want their guys. If you're going for you know you're
in a pennant race. You don't want you don't want
your pitchers all hyped up for for an Olympic game. Uh,

(14:41):
it's maybe throwing their arm out by trying too hard,
which happened in the World Baseball Classic to the to
the Mariner pitcher, remember that, Drew Smiley, Yeah, yeah, exactly.
You know, he was too he had too much adrenaline
and he let loose too early and ended up you know,
you he dominated during the World Baseball Classic, And I

(15:02):
remember I was in spring training there and we were
talking to Drew Smile about how Brady looked and how
well just voted for the season and everything, and he
never threw another pitch for the Meritners. You know, he
became upsore, he was shut down, and he didn't pitch
at all that year. So anyway, logistically, it's just hard

(15:23):
to do it in the middle of the season. So
I think it's going to probably be what it's always been,
which is minor leaguers not on the forty man roster,
which is not a very compelling spectacle.

Speaker 5 (15:34):
Larry, it seems like we're moving in the NFL away
from the preseason and towards these scrimmages. This one today
got about as much coverage as I've ever heard of
Seahawks scrimmage kit against the Titans. If you were the
grand Poobob all Things NFL, how would you have the
preseason work over the next five or ten years.

Speaker 4 (15:54):
Yeah, I don't know if there's anything you can do
to change it. It's you know, you understand why the
teams don't want to have their front line players play.
I do like the joint practice idea. Uh. The only
downside is that no one gets to see it. It's
not televised or anything like that. Maybe they could start
televising those those those things. Maybe that's where that's where

(16:16):
you go, because you you get the front line players,
you get the starters, You get Geno Smith who probably
won't we won't see at all in the in the preseason. Uh,
you get him with it with the ones and and
they're going hard. But you could you could make the
quarterback off limits, so it's a little safer. So you know,

(16:37):
it's a weird thing.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
You know.

Speaker 4 (16:40):
Pete Carroll used to talk about it is you got
to you're getting ready for a season, but there's virtually
no hitting and no tackling and the things that that
make football. You don't do until the your you'r You
don't do it full full speed until your first game
of the year, more or less. And uh uh, you
know that's a that's a hard way to prepare for
a season. So I'm not sure there's any great answer

(17:03):
to that. But I think as they lengthened the season,
and it's probably going to be lengthened more, they'll they'll
compensate by cutting out preseason games. Will probably be down
to two before long.

Speaker 2 (17:16):
Hey, Larry, before you go, let me ask you one more.

Speaker 3 (17:20):
Mentioned Susa's appearance with you guys, I think Dick a
week ago where he said that once Julio is ready
to play the outfield, he would put him in right
and keep Robless in center. You think the Mariners would
do that?

Speaker 4 (17:32):
Did he say that for health reasons or for or
because he thought he was that Robless was a better center.

Speaker 3 (17:39):
I think he thinks that for now it's a health reason.
And number two, he thinks Roblest is better in center.

Speaker 4 (17:46):
Well, I don't agree with that. You know, I think
you can make an argument for for health reasons for sure,
if you if you still think that that that ankle
is is problematic, But you know, if he's healthy, would
put I think Coolio would would be my center fielder.
And I think Worldless has got a good enough harm

(18:07):
where it's a good right shield arm. But I can
I can see the argument for you know, if he
still can't go one hundred percent, but he's ready to
play the outfield, you certainly don't have to run as
much right field. I would. I would. I can certainly
make a case for that. But all things being equal,
I just think Julio's played center field too well to

(18:27):
take him out of it.

Speaker 2 (18:28):
All right, man, great stuff. Appreciate this, Larry, enjoy the
rest of the game. I was talk in a week man.

Speaker 4 (18:34):
Okay, thanks guy, all right.

Speaker 2 (18:35):
Larry Stone with us.

Speaker 3 (18:36):
Will Levice, Titan's quarterback, spoke a bit about the Seahawk
joint practice.

Speaker 2 (18:41):
Today.

Speaker 3 (18:41):

on ninety three three kg a r F M.

Speaker 2 (19:05):
I believe that every show has had one of these
to give away? Is that right?

Speaker 3 (19:09):
I do not know that part. No, I think I
think every show has had one. Why are we the
last one?

Speaker 4 (19:14):
Why?

Speaker 2 (19:14):
I don't know, man, goodness, because we are who we are.

Speaker 3 (19:17):
We're just can you say you can't say that it's
either saving the best for last or we are the dumpster.
We're sucking high one on this is my father in
law would say you're sucking high. And you know what
on this show you not say the word. I don't
think so. Although there is a bird, there's a tit bird.

Speaker 2 (19:35):
I know that. Well, I guess you just did. I'm
just it safe. I'm just gonna play it safe. I
don't want to call from the boss. All right, Hang
on a second, let me look it up.

Speaker 3 (19:45):
Yeah, there is a a bird called a tit bird.
The tits, chickadees and tit mies constitute the paraday, a
large family of small passerine birds which occur mainly in
the Northern Hemisphere and Africa.

Speaker 2 (20:00):
There you go where you.

Speaker 3 (20:01):
Go from what I'm reading a you know it's all
in context. What are the encyclopedias. We used to read Britannica.
The word Cectopedia Britannica. That's where I first got to
know the tit bird, and I thought it was the
funniest day.

Speaker 5 (20:16):
Why don't you, Why don't you put the burd into
AI that we just discovered and see what that shows.

(21:27):
So Brian Callahan from Callahan Otto, who is the head
coach now of the Tennessee Titans. Amazing rise from Callahan
Otto and Sandusky, Ohio to the head coach walk on
the sideline in Nashville, spoke today after the joint practice
with the Seattle Seahawks.

Speaker 2 (21:43):
Good hard, physical practice.

Speaker 6 (21:45):
I really appreciate the Seahawks, how they came out to work.
I thought we got great work in today. Mike does
a great job over there. It's a similar scheme, but
he runs his version of it, and so that was
fun to get a different look. And I got some
good players on that side. On the defensive side, I
watched a period or two on our defense, I thought
it went well. I didn't watch all of it, so
don't ask me too many questions about our defense. I
didn't see it at all. I'll watch the tape and i'll

(22:05):
get back to you tomorrow. You know, both teams had
a lot of energy, a lot of back and forth,
but but no no real issues. Enjoy the fact that
the Seahawks did the same, it was good. There's a
lot of talking and John, but that's football. We all
played within the rules today and I thought that was good.
It's gonna be We're gonna take it to the edge.
That's just how it works. They are too, but it's
good to see it and not escalate past that. And
then we played good, clean football, you know, for for
most of that practice.

Speaker 2 (22:26):
So that was good. You mentioned having watched.

Speaker 6 (22:28):
The tape since you did you were over on the
offensive side.

Speaker 5 (22:30):
How valuable is it that you're getting, you know, game
Julie Lawley, Browne or didn't work against DK Metcalf and
those guys.

Speaker 2 (22:37):
That's great.

Speaker 6 (22:37):
I mean, anytime you can, you can compare those guys
to what's out there in the league, and there's there
are trios is you know, I put it up with
just about anybody as far as pure talent. Those receivers
are good on that side, and so to see our
young players go against them, it's a great evaluation tool
for us.

Speaker 2 (22:51):
They're not scared and I know that.

Speaker 6 (22:52):
And then it was to see those guys go out
and compete against a really good group, it's gonna be good.
I can't wait to watch it. It's gonna be fun
tape to evaluate all.

Speaker 2 (23:00):
Be totally honest with you, I don't have any idea
why we played that he was talking about it. Was
there really anything there?

Speaker 4 (23:08):
You know? I mean.

Speaker 5 (23:11):
I've been here, and I mean Greg Bell has just
been gushing over Byron Murphy.

Speaker 2 (23:16):
He said he was the So it was Jeremiah by
the way, Yeah.

Speaker 5 (23:19):
The best player the last two days, and the best
player on this weekend, in the in the preseason game,
best player in the scrimmage today? Are the three best
players on this team?

Speaker 2 (23:30):
All on defense?

Speaker 3 (23:31):
Well, I think Byron Murphy, Tarik Woollen, right, yes? And
is there a player on offense? DK Metcalf, the the
the new version.

Speaker 5 (23:43):
The DK Metcalf that we all hope that one's.

Speaker 3 (23:46):
Going to rump your head off and crap down your neck,
doubting that guy right there. So, the one that's tired
of here in your gun, he should be that one.

Speaker 5 (23:56):
He should be. Because I'm not making a prediction on
DK Metcalf. I'm not saying he's gonna have a bad
year instead of I think he's gonna have a very
good year. All I'm saying is this thought of what
DK Metcalf is is not what DK metcalf has been.

Speaker 2 (24:14):
That's my point.

Speaker 3 (24:14):
I think everybody gets that. That's the frustration, though, Dick.
The frustration is that when you look at these top
ten wide receiver lists all over the NFL and he's
not on them.

Speaker 2 (24:23):
He should be on them. He should be.

Speaker 3 (24:25):
That's the frustration, is that why is this guy not
on them? Who's the tight end from the Lions? Is
it Laporta, right, Sam Laparo? Why is he getting more
targets than DK metcalf is? Why do things like that happen?
So I really hope that this does turn around for him.
There's no question about that. By the way, Melan yesterday
encouraging gambling on the radio show, put all your money
on Byron Murphy to win the NFL Defensive Rookie of

(24:47):
the Year. Right now, he is at plus thirteen hundred, okay,
plus thirteen hundred in front of him for defense, Leatu
Latu is in front of him, Dallas Turner's in front
of him, Jared vere in front of him, Terry On
Arnold is in front of him. One site, Scott Quinyan
Mitchell in front of him. Not many, I mean he's

(25:09):
he's like fifth or sixth dick on the list.

Speaker 5 (25:11):
I would have to go back and look, and I'll
do that real quick. How many interior defensive lineman.

Speaker 2 (25:17):
Well, he was the first one taken the first tackle.
I understand that, right.

Speaker 5 (25:20):
How many interior defensive linemen have ever won the NFL's
Defensive Rookie the Year because you would think it would
be edge rusher, cornerback that gets picks. It would be
like a stat related type award, right, and he's not
going to get a ton of stats.

Speaker 3 (25:36):
The last interior lineman to win it was Chase Young,
but he was more of an edge rusher, right, so
Will Anderson, Sauce Gardner, Micah Parsons, Chase Young, Nick both Bosa.
When you hear an interior guy, stop me, Shaq Leonard,
Marshawn Lattimore, Joey Bosa, Marcus Peters, Aaron Donald in twenty fourteen,
Sheldon Richardson the year before that, and Doma can Sue

(25:58):
in twenty ten.

Speaker 2 (26:00):
Little run.

Speaker 3 (26:00):
So we've had three guys in the last fourteen years
from the interior.

Speaker 2 (26:04):
That would be the only thing.

Speaker 5 (26:05):
Because I think he could absolutely be the best art layer,
the best defensive.

Speaker 2 (26:09):
Rookie of the Year. But he doesn't think of that
before I put the money on I put the money.

Speaker 4 (26:15):
Well, you gotta ask.

Speaker 3 (26:16):
I heard Milan yesterday and I panicked, Did you put
the money on him? And now you're thinkin now you're
telling me it's not gonna happen.

Speaker 5 (26:23):
At thirteen to one, I still think that's a good number.
All right, we're gonna break.

Speaker 3 (26:26):
Mike Florio coming up about a half hour right here
on ninety three three KJRFM.

Speaker 1 (26:31):
Myve from the R and R Foundation Specialist broadcast studio.
Now back to Softie and Dick on your Home for
the Huskies and the Kruken Sports Radio ninety three point
three kJ r FM.

Speaker 3 (26:47):
All right, we're back here on a Wednesday night, right
here on ninety three three KJRFM. You get hit by
the way, I couldn't tell. Here we go, here's a angle, No,
didn't get hits. So we're watching the Mariners game on
Root Sports, and it looks.

Speaker 2 (27:05):
Like Julio Rodriguez is hurt again.

Speaker 3 (27:08):
Scott service trainers all just came out inside pitch had
to kind of back off the plate a little bit.
I don't know what the deal is if it's got
anything at all to do with his high ankle sprain.
But we said this yesterday, Dick, when you were off
the air, that if Julio Rodriguez and now it looks
like he's coming out of the game. If Julio Rodriguez
gets hurt again, No, he's staying out sid in. These

(27:29):
guys are going to take a ton of heat if
he gets hurt again. He's out there limping around. He's
not healthy yet to play the outfield. He's d h in,
which he's never done. I think he did it like
five times, four times, excuse me, before yesterday's game. And
obviously if he were one hundred percent healthy, he'd be
out there in the outfield.

Speaker 2 (27:46):
So he's not.

Speaker 3 (27:47):
So if he gets banged up again, these guys are
never going to hear the end of it. And we
asked Larry Stone at five o'clock if they rushed him
back too much, So we'll see. This is definitely something
to keep an eye on, man, no question about it,
because looks like he's kind of laboring a little bit
out there right now art staying.

Speaker 2 (28:03):
In the game.

Speaker 5 (28:04):
Yeah, earlier in the game, he had a ground ball
that he kind of tried to leg out, but it
still looked like he was running about seventy five percent
instead of me. He wasn't dogging it, but he wasn't
really sprinting either, and he got the first base and
he just started limping down the line.

Speaker 2 (28:18):
He was wincing for sure.

Speaker 1 (28:20):
Ye.

Speaker 3 (28:20):
And that's what steven SUSA talked about Monday, that if
you had given him maybe the rehabit Simon and Tacoma,
you may have looked at that game down there and said,
all right, you're just not quite ready yet to come
back and be a part of this. And he just,
by the way, dropped a single down the left field
line for an RBI.

Speaker 2 (28:36):
So good for him.

Speaker 3 (28:36):
But he's obviously not healthy, there's no question about that.
And you wonder, I'm just going to toss it out there,
do we need to just give this guy maybe a
couple of days off before the stretch run in September
and really get his mind and his body right before
September comes along.

Speaker 5 (28:53):
I this goes back for me to the question between
are you heard or are you injured? And if he's
just hurting, then yeah, suck it up and play right.
If he's injured, and by playing he could get more
injured and we could lose him for the rest of
the season.

Speaker 2 (29:08):
Than absolutely, you need to shut up.

Speaker 3 (29:10):
Well, he ankle sprain is sometimes six weeks, right, I mean,
I was even surprised he came back as quick as
he did. And I would be stunned if they put
him back out there for Walmer rape if this game
goes to extras, which let's open. Absolutely, he's the agent,
so he's not playing the field. But it looks like
his night is done.

Speaker 1 (29:27):
You know.

Speaker 3 (29:29):
I thought maybe there was a chance he would miss
the entire month of August, and they brought him back
a couple of days ago, so here we go. But hey,
how about some sloppy seconds.

Speaker 4 (29:38):
Like them on.

Speaker 2 (29:41):
The text line? So we asked the question earlier.

Speaker 3 (29:44):
You're more discouraged or encouraged about the team the rest
of the season. Uh two o six. It's over for
the Mariners. Time to focus on the Seahawks and the Dogs.
H two o six discouraged. Can't hit good pitching all
year long? Those signs of changing uh two oh six
discouraging feeling. If the ms are down three to one

(30:06):
after the sixth inning, I turn it off and just
check the score line.

Speaker 5 (30:09):
That was the question I asked earlier, because honestly, guys,
I've been in that same boat this year, because I
gave it a good two or three months where I think, Okay,
maybe they can pull us out, maybe they can pull
us out, and time and time and time and time again,
they don't pull it out when they're down three to
one in the seventh and so I absolutely have since

(30:30):
about July first, I'm like, hey, they're down three to one,
four to one in the seventh. Click, I'll see what happened.
I'll watch the recap and see what happened. I'm gonna
not gonna spend the next hour of my night watching
one two three year out one two three or out
one two three year out in the last three innings.

Speaker 3 (30:47):
Well, then I would say that you're discouraged. Then, I mean,
if you get to the later innings and you're down
by a couple of runs so you can't have any
faith to keep watching the game, then that just shows
you're right there where you're at with these guys. I mean, honestly,
I I think you just answered the question for yourself
that you're that you're discouraged about this, But.

Speaker 5 (31:04):
That being said, though I still think they can win
this division. I mean I still think they so yes,
I'm discouraged at the overall outlook because even if they
win the division, I just cannot see this offense mustering it,
regardless of the pitching staff, right, I cannot see this
offense mustering enough to win four out of seven games

(31:25):
against anybody.

Speaker 2 (31:27):
Let's say, not encouraged.

Speaker 3 (31:29):
They were nineteen games above five hundred September second last year.
This will take a complete collapse by several teams for
them to make it.

Speaker 2 (31:36):
Well, that's not true.

Speaker 5 (31:40):
Would take wouldn't take a what do the talking about?

Speaker 2 (31:43):
Or a game a half behind.

Speaker 3 (31:44):
Houston, game and a half behind Houston if they win
here their game, mind us two games out behind Boston, who,
by the way, is tied right now seven to seven
with Texas.

Speaker 2 (31:54):
What's the what's the Houston scorer? Right now? They're up
one nothing, bottom of the eighth.

Speaker 3 (31:58):
So the M's have got to win the night to
a game and a half back, all right, how about
a coup? More on the text line, slap second, Roberts Dick,
you're being a bit unfair to DK. As a wide receiver,
you are dependent on the quarterback. For some reason, Seattle
quarterbacks have not targeted DK. If he was in San Francisco,

(32:19):
he probably would be a superstar. Targets are largely out
of his control. I will say this that in the
last four years, four or five years outside of one,
he was the highest ranked player in the NFL Top
hundred every year, the highest ranked Seahawk, sorry, in the
NFL Top hundred.

Speaker 2 (32:35):
Yes, when it was Bobby Wagner. Right now, he's not
in there anymore. Is that true? He's not. I don't
believe something.

Speaker 3 (32:40):
Yeah, I just say that, Is that him or is
that the scheme? Because remember when they signed DK metcalf
what I said to you on the air, I said,
why are we signing this guy to this massive contract
if we're not going to throw the guy the ball?
And is this the wrong offense? Is he is Pete
Carroll the wrong coach for him to play for? I
said that New Ris times on the air. Is he

(33:01):
in the wrong system? Is he gonna be holding him back?
Now We're gonna find out.

Speaker 5 (33:05):
We're gonna find out. And I'm encouraged. I'm I'm encouraged
for a season this year. I think Ryan Grubb will
make the most of it. I think DK Metcalf will
have the best season of his career. I think he's
a good fantasy get. I have never drafted DK Metcalf
because I just didn't have any faith in him or
the Seahawks getting in the ball. And it's paid off
because he was like a second or third round draft

(33:25):
pick every single year and he's.

Speaker 2 (33:27):
Never lived up to that draft.

Speaker 3 (33:29):
And the question is is that more his fault or
is that more the coach's fault scheme?

Speaker 2 (33:33):
I think yes.

Speaker 3 (33:34):
I think the answer that question is, now you gotta
pick one. No, don't, don't, don't ride the fence. Don't
ride the fence. I think it's the scheme.

Speaker 2 (33:40):
I would say, I think it's target.

Speaker 5 (33:42):
If you had to tip me, Hugh Millens fifty percent
a feather, I would tip towards the scheme. I would
tip towards Shane Waldron and the and the Pete Carroll
style of of you know, wanting long sustained drives to
keep your keep your defense off the field.

Speaker 3 (33:56):
Yeah, I would say it was the scheme more than
dka nonsense that he's not getting the ball more. Let's
hope Ryan Grubb fix it.

Speaker 2 (34:02):
Okay, that's pure nonsense.
