around here celebrating a deformed raccoon, right, and that's supposed

of us should be fired up for tomorrow, and instead
people just have a hard time putting.

team is performing.

Yeah, that can change really quickly. My question is did
they even give a damn yesterday? I mean, they threw
a lineup out there with Nok Weston Wilson and Leo
Reebos and Pareda and like they had no chance. In
the very beginning, the game was over through the first
four batters of the game, it was four to nothing.

Wilcox out there. They throw Victor Roeblaz out there. So
my question is, all right, that was a throwaway game.
It was treated like a throwaway game. They played it
like a throwaway game. Are they going to care right
this weekend? Is there gonna be more care from Dan
Wilson and from the players because it's this special weekend,
or are they gonna treat this weekend like every other

game they've treated the season, which at least half of
them have been basically no shows. I mean, you've had
eleven shutouts. You probably had seven or eight more games
where you scored one run, maybe seven or eight more
than that that you've scored two runs. There's been thirty
games this year where they even have you haven't even.

Well, Look, I mean I understand why they would rest
those guys on the last day of a three game series,
but I also think there's forty seven games. This is
a score tream. There's forty seven games left to go.
I mean, at some point you got to start to
suck it up and get these guys out there. I
do think that Cal needed a day off. I think Naylor,

you know, look, without the twenty five game on bass streak,
whatever it is, he's obviously not the same player he
was when he was here at the end of last year.
I mean, next Wednesday is the two month anniversary of
Josh Naylor's last home run, which is unbelievable. It's the
longest streak of his life by far. So there's a
part of me that understands it. There's also a part

of me that wants these guys to start playing with
some of partly a sense of urgency. But what I
think is going on, Dick, is I think these guys
look at the standings and they see a baseball team
that's three games out in the division, and they feel like,
you know, hey, just drown out the noise. We've got
a chance to win this division. Okay, we'll start showing
us right, like, start playing like it. Yeah, because they
need to start getting some momentum going. And the problem

is you're asking them to get momentum against maybe the
toughest nineteen stretch games of baseball they're gonna play all
year long. I mean, Tampa Bay, the Yankees, Houston, Milwaukee,
the Cubs in Philadelphia. That's about as big of a
murderer's row of a nineteen game stretch as they'll face
the entire year. So they're gonna have to do this
against some pretty damn good baseball teams, man.

But I don't know, dude.

I just think about this in context of where we
were last year, and like I said on yesterday's show,
that there doesn't seem to be any team in baseball
that is more successful in throwing away good vibes and
not handling prosperity than this team. We're sitting here ten

months ago at Jimmy's watching that Game seven against Toronto,
all of us just filled with hope, dreaming about going
to a World Series, and here we are ten months
later and we can't stop crushing these guys.

It's just it's uncanny how they just do not handle
prosperity well.

And I mentioned this to Larry Stone the other day
that they should be talking about making the playoffs four
years in a row, and he corrected.

It should be five years in a row, absolutely, twenty two,
twenty three, twenty four to twenty five and now twenty
s close twenty one. They should be pushing five years
in a row when you have the pitching that they had,
the ten game lead now the crappy division. Instead, we're
supposed to be sitting here just on our hands and knees.
Thankful for making it maybe three out of five, and
right now it's looking like it's gonna be tough.

Well, Dave, they did the exact same thing in twenty
twenty three, coming off that great twenty twenty two run.

We got a playoff win.

Yeah, it didn't end the way we wanted, but we

and made the playoffs? I mean, that's the constant letdown

I mean I know that, you know, you like to
kind of say, hey, let each team be their own
team and judge it by what they do and don't
make them pay for the sins of the father. But
it's really hard to do that, man.

I mean, well, but this team is the same team
I blame. Yeah, I'm with you on that. I mean,
I think you can blame twenty twenty one through twenty
twenty six on about the same type of stuff. I
just never thought we could blame ye, you know, twenty ten. Yeah,
you know today for what happened fifteen years ago.

But I'm saying that I don't agree with that, and
that's fine. I mean, I'm not saying it's right or wrong.
I just have a different perspective than you. I'm just
a pissed off Mariner fan. I don't care what year
it is. I don't care what GM it is. I
don't care what ownership group it is. I don't care
what manager it is. The Mariners are the Mariners, right,
I mean, they've become a verb, right, a verb for stinking.
And it's unfortunate that you think of the Mariners and

you think of a down trodden major League Baseball franchise,
one of the worst franchises in professional sports over the
course of their fifty years. I mean, they're like the
Atlanta Hawks of the Major Leagues. Man, they just they're
just there. They don't really do anything. Every now and then,
they're gonna throw out a superstar like Dominique Wilkins or
Ken Griffy Junior, but they're not gonna do anything that

resonates with anybody on a championship level. So you know, look,
I mean, this is the hand that we've been dealt.
But I just think that Mariner Baseball fans are very skeptical.
They wake up skeptical, they go to bed skeptical, and
they have every right to feel that way, every right
to feel that way. So this is gonna be, if
they don't pull this off, one of the biggest disappointments ever,
I think in Seattle sports history. For a team that

got to Game seven of the ALC has brought mostly
everybody back, and the moves that they made the guys
that they did not bring back, it all made sense,
and it still makes sense. Hoorre Polanco stinks, Auho Suarez stinks.
These guys are done, They're washed up, they're past their prime.
They made the right call not bringing those guys in
the reason why this team. I was talking to a

Cal Rowley's having a horrible year, Julio by his standards,
having a substandard year, Josh Naylor by his standards, power wise,
RBI wise, not having a great year. They never really
replaced Polanco's numbers. Obviously they thought Donovan would potentially be
that guy. Cole Young's having a decent year, but he's
not having an elite season. He's on pace for seventy

two RBIs, which is great for Cole Young, but it
can't be great if he's all you've got. When you're
leading RBI, man's projected the drive in seventy two. You're
talking about doing something that hasn't been done since Miguela
Levo fifteen years ago, Daniel Vogelbach back in the day.
That's how bad this offense is. The last time the
Mariners had an RBI leader that was that pathetic. It

was players like that, and that is shocking to think
of this team being talked about in that same light.

It's because there is a disconnect between the goals of
this organization and the goals of the fan base. There
is also a disconnect between the goals of this organization
and the goals of organizations like the Seahawks, the Sounders,
the Storm. Those organizations say, yeah, there's gonna be down
times where we're gonna rebuild, but our goal eventually is
to win a championship, not to just kind of be

good and be good enough to fill the stadium. And
this team has been very, very honest about what their
goals are, and their goals are to be consistently competitive.
Not a championship caliber team that may happen accidentally every
thing or four years, sure, but be consistently competitive. And
when your goal is to only be consistently competitive, well,

there's a range, right, some years is going to be
like last year and you can make the seventh game
of the LCS. But when your goal is to be
a ninety ish eighty eight ish win team, there's gonna
be some years you only reach eighty.

Well, I'm looking at Baseball Reference playoff odds. Mariners now
have the ninth best odds in the American League to
make the playoffs, and keep in mind, there's only six
teams that make it all right, So Tampa, Boston, New York, Chicago,
the Tigers, Cleveland, Houston, Texas all have better odds than
them to win the division. The Mariners are down to

eighteen percent obviously behind Houston in Texas. And that Houston
series is going to be big, right When is that
is that?

Next week? By the way, I think it is next week. Yeah,

That's gonna be a gigantic series against the Astros after
they play the Yankees. So the good news is, I
think we're gonna know in about ten days from now,
you know, what this team's doing with their schedule. We'll know,
you know, if they got a shot. I mean, I'm
still the idiot that thinks they have a chance. I'm
still the idiots. Of course they haven't. They're going to
find a way to turn this thing around and go
on a run, because they haven't had a run all
year long. Right, they had that one run where they

won what was at eight in a row whatever it
was earlier this year. But I'm talking about a run
where cal Rowley and Julio and Naylor and these guys
actually performed where they actually step up and start to
earn their money they're being paid this year and deliver
a little bit.

At the same time, there's no way all these guys
are gonna be this terrible together during the season.

this division just simply the NFC South?

Where I mean, how as Seahawks fans, how did we
look at the NFC South last year? Whoever ended up
It was Carolina that ended up winning it, but it

Have been Tampa.

It could have been it could have been Atlanta, could
have been any of those teams that finishes an eight
and nine or nine and eight wins the division.

looked at at this division? That they should be looked

I don't, maybe not as strong as I would about Carolina,
But there has been nothing that any of one of
those three teams has shown me that they can compete
over multiple series in the playoff.

If I felt like the Mariners were playing the best
baseball they could play and they still were four games under,
I'd say you're a thousand percent right this team.

Is it a great shot? Probably not, but they got
a shot. I mean again, if the team has been
underperforming all year long, and they find a way to

they're supposed to do, first of all, just to make it,
and then second of all, once they get there, if
they also perform the way they're supposed to. This team
over the offseason and into the year. April May, we
thought once they got there they would do pretty good,
and I don't think that's changed at all. I Mean,
the problem for me, Dick, I'm not even thinking about

how they would do once they made the playoffs. I'm
thinking about if they can even get in, and that's gonna.

won ten of their last eleven games to pull within

But that's not the case, I mean, because recently all
we do is respond to what we're seeing recently, and
recently we're seeing absolutely dog meat baseball out of these guys.
So the question is do they have anything left in
the tank, Dick that can get them in this race

and get them over the hum and get them in
the playoffs or of Mariner fans just completely thrown away
the idea of this team in the postseason for the
second year in a row, for the first time in
twenty five.

as disgusted as I've been with everything that I've seen
the last four months, right, not just the execution or
lack thereof, but just the lack of fight. Remember, they

faith in Logan Gilbert and George Kirby and Bryce Miller

I got faith in those guys going on a run
where we see nine out of ten games, where we
get quality starts out of those guys, and they're keeping
us in every single game, and they can't be so

I think it's going to be fantastic regardless of how
the baseball game goes. And I do have to tell
you that this is a really good ball club. I
worked for the Los Angeles Dodgers and we had just
played this team, and we were all discussing about, you know,
how good this baseball team is and how dangerous they
can be. They're pitching the elite and last year, if
I remember correctly, you know, they were down. They were
(23:50):
three games out in September and they came back and
made a huge run and when like seventeen of eighteen
or something like that and got into the postseason. So
you know, as long as you're in the position, the
position that they're in anything can happen. They're right where
they need to be, within striking distance, and they have
the talent to do it.

Yeah, Roll Banyas is with us from across the street
at Timole Park and Rowe. You mentioned those first few,
first few go rounds right ninety six, seven ninety eight,
you're kind of up and down. I think it was
what like a fifty plus game span whatever, something like that,
and then something started to pop for you, you know,
a couple of years later, you know, two thousand and
one really was a four or five year kind.

What was the difference, like what finally started working for
you in that two thousand and one two thousand and

Well, first and foremost it was Harvey Dorfman. And first
and foremost one A and one B was Kevin Seitzer.
Kevin Seitzer, Mariners current hitting coach. I got DFAD twice
in a month, and every team passed. And after that
second time I heard about this guy named Kevin Sitzer
who had a cage in Kansas City. I gave him

a phone call the day I got dfa'd spent three
day I went to Iowa one day, got one at bat,
hit a slider off a lefty, right at the left fielder,
hit a rocket and I said, wow, I have not
felt that in a long time. And they pulled me
out of the game, and next thing you know, I
was back in the big leagues and the rest is history.

So Kevin Sites are without him.
Speaker 8 (25:15):
My you know, my baseball career as a hitter was
nowhere near as good and and maybe over.
Speaker 4 (25:21):
So what do you think that disconnect is between hitters
like Kevin Sites, or teachers like Kevin Sites, or teachers
like Edgar Martinez and this particular team.
Speaker 7 (25:32):
Yeah, I don't.
Speaker 8 (25:32):
I definitely don't think it's a it's a disconnect. And
what I can tell you is that it's major League baseball.
It's hitting has always been hard. It's harder than ever
and and you know it's cyclical as well. Sometimes guys
have great seasons and then you come back and you
struggle to find it again. But then you know, you
find it at the right times. And some of these
guys that you certainly have the talent and the capability
(25:55):
to get really hot and carry an entire team. And
one thing I learned you know, when you playing on
postseason contending teams, nobody really remembers what you did during
the season. If you get hot at the right time,
you can become a postseason here or get your team
to the postseason and next thing you know, the team's
fighting for an opportunity to win a championships.

Yeah.
Speaker 2 (26:15):
Well, Rowl, you mentioned being with a Dodger as Rollabanyez
as with us on the air, and I mean, obviously
those guys are stacked. Man, tell us about what it's
like being around Freeman, Muncie, Show Hay now, Trek scouble
Glass now yam a moto. I mean, what an unbelievable
clubhouse you guys have put together down there, and it's
so good that now people hate your guts for it.

By the way, you're you're like the Evil Empire of baseball.
What's it like being a part of that organization?

Yeah, I mean, you know, we were playing against the
Evil Empire of Baseball when I was, you know, coming
up and playing against them, and that wasn't fun. It's
certainly better to be the Evil Empire where you're you're
getting an opportunity to win. That being said, I could
just tell you that everybody from the top down the
organization deeply cares about winning. All the players deeply care
about winning, and they're just when you get around them,

they're just really normal, good dudes to be around. Dave
Roberts and our coaching staff as a phenomenal they do
a phenomenal job of keeping everybody accountable. They hold each
other accountable. But also they don't forget they work really hard,
but they also have a really good time together.

Yeah, Sovie and I had absolutely no problem with the
Dodgers getting Schooble. I mean, I think a lot of
people did, but we were like, hey, make yourself as
great as you possibly can. What would you say to
the people out there that would say, hey, yeah, this
is bad for baseball that the Dodgers are getting Trek.

Schooble, I would say that the entire purpose of playing
Major League Baseball or being part of a team is
to win. And if you know, as Andrew Friedman Alway says,
our north star is winning and everything is geared towards winning,
then you have to give yourself the absolute best opportunity
to win and to win win a championship, and we
owe it to our you know, our fans.

We owe it to our players, we are to our
ownership group.

We always sell us as in a group and as
an organization, so our fan come out, you know, and
support us. North of four million every season. We have
incredible fans and they deeply care about winning and we
owe it to them and we have an obligation and

you know, hey, just drown out the noise. We've got
a chance to win this division. Okay, we'll start showing
us right, like, start playing like it. Yeah, because they
need to start getting some momentum going. And the problem

is you're asking them to get momentum against maybe the
toughest nineteen stretch games of baseball they're gonna play all
year long. I mean, Tampa Bay, the Yankees, Houston, Milwaukee,
the Cubs in Philadelphia. That's about as big of a
murderer's row of a nineteen game stretch as they'll face
the entire year. So they're gonna have to do this
against some pretty damn good baseball teams, man.

I just think about this in context of where we
were last year, and like I said on yesterday's show,
that there doesn't seem to be any team in baseball
that is more successful in throwing away good vibes and

all of us just filled with hope, dreaming about going
to a World Series, and here we are ten months
later and we can't stop crushing these guys.

It's just it's uncanny how they just do not handle

And I mentioned this to Larry Stone the other day
that they should be talking about making the playoffs four
years in a row, and he corrected.

twenty three, twenty four to twenty five and now twenty
s close twenty one. They should be pushing five years
in a row when you have the pitching that they had,

supposed to be sitting here just on our hands and knees.
Thankful for making it maybe three out of five, and
right now it's looking like it's gonna be tough.

could you have gone fourteen and fourteen down the stretch
and made the playoffs? I mean, that's the constant letdown

that you're talking about with this franchise.

kind of say, hey, let each team be their own
team and judge it by what they do and don't

I think you can blame twenty twenty one through twenty

what manager it is. The Mariners are the Mariners, right,

And it's unfortunate that you think of the Mariners and

you think of a down trodden major League Baseball franchise,
one of the worst franchises in professional sports over the
course of their fifty years. I mean, they're like the
Atlanta Hawks of the Major Leagues. Man, they just they're
just there. They don't really do anything. Every now and then,
they're gonna throw out a superstar like Dominique Wilkins or
Ken Griffy Junior, but they're not gonna do anything that

resonates with anybody on a championship level. So you know, look,
I mean, this is the hand that we've been dealt.
But I just think that Mariner Baseball fans are very skeptical.
They wake up skeptical, they go to bed skeptical, and
they have every right to feel that way, every right
to feel that way. So this is gonna be, if
they don't pull this off, one of the biggest disappointments ever,
I think in Seattle sports history. For a team that

got to Game seven of the ALC has brought mostly
everybody back, and the moves that they made the guys
that they did not bring back, it all made sense,
and it still makes sense. Hoorre Polanco stinks, Auho Suarez stinks.
These guys are done, They're washed up, they're past their prime.
They made the right call not bringing those guys in
the reason why this team. I was talking to a

guy Husky football practice, Dick today about this this morning.

We don't need to overthink this.

Cal Rowley's having a horrible year, Julio by his standards,
having a substandard year, Josh Naylor by his standards, power wise,
RBI wise, not having a great year. They never really
replaced Polanco's numbers. Obviously they thought Donovan would potentially be
that guy. Cole Young's having a decent year, but he's
not having an elite season. He's on pace for seventy

two RBIs, which is great for Cole Young, but it
can't be great if he's all you've got. When you're
leading RBI, man's projected the drive in seventy two. You're
talking about doing something that hasn't been done since Miguela
Levo fifteen years ago, Daniel Vogelbach back in the day.
That's how bad this offense is. The last time the
Mariners had an RBI leader that was that pathetic. It

was players like that, and that is shocking to think
of this team being talked about in that same light.

It's because there is a disconnect between the goals of
this organization and the goals of the fan base. There
is also a disconnect between the goals of this organization
and the goals of organizations like the Seahawks, the Sounders,
the Storm. Those organizations say, yeah, there's gonna be down
times where we're gonna rebuild, but our goal eventually is
to win a championship, not to just kind of be

good and be good enough to fill the stadium. And
this team has been very, very honest about what their
goals are, and their goals are to be consistently competitive.
Not a championship caliber team that may happen accidentally every
thing or four years, sure, but be consistently competitive. And
when your goal is to only be consistently competitive, well,

there's a range, right, some years is going to be
like last year and you can make the seventh game
of the LCS. But when your goal is to be
a ninety ish eighty eight ish win team, there's gonna
be some years you only reach eighty.

Well, I'm looking at Baseball Reference playoff odds. Mariners now
have the ninth best odds in the American League to
make the playoffs, and keep in mind, there's only six
teams that make it all right, So Tampa, Boston, New York, Chicago,
the Tigers, Cleveland, Houston, Texas all have better odds than
them to win the division. The Mariners are down to

eighteen percent obviously behind Houston in Texas. And that Houston
series is going to be big, right When is that

find a way to turn this thing around and go

the idea of this team in the postseason for the

lack thereof, but just the lack of fight. Remember, they

the baseball game goes. And I do have to tell
you that this is a really good ball club. I
worked for the Los Angeles Dodgers and we had just
played this team, and we were all discussing about, you know,
how good this baseball team is and how dangerous they
can be. They're pitching the elite and last year, if
I remember correctly, you know, they were down. They were

three games out in September and they came back and
made a huge run and when like seventeen of eighteen
or something like that and got into the postseason. So
you know, as long as you're in the position, the
position that they're in anything can happen. They're right where
they need to be, within striking distance, and they have
the talent to do it.

Yeah, Roll Banyas is with us from across the street
at Timole Park and Rowe. You mentioned those first few,
first few go rounds right ninety six, seven ninety eight,
you're kind of up and down. I think it was
what like a fifty plus game span whatever, something like that,
and then something started to pop for you, you know,
a couple of years later, you know, two thousand and
one really was a four or five year kind.

What was the difference, like what finally started working for
you in that two thousand and one two thousand and

and foremost one A and one B was Kevin Seitzer.
Kevin Seitzer, Mariners current hitting coach. I got DFAD twice
in a month, and every team passed. And after that
second time I heard about this guy named Kevin Sitzer
who had a cage in Kansas City. I gave him

a phone call the day I got dfa'd spent three
day I went to Iowa one day, got one at bat,
hit a slider off a lefty, right at the left fielder,
hit a rocket and I said, wow, I have not
felt that in a long time. And they pulled me
out of the game, and next thing you know, I
was back in the big leagues and the rest is history.

So Kevin Sites are without him.
Speaker 8 (25:15):
My you know, my baseball career as a hitter was
nowhere near as good and and maybe over.
Speaker 4 (25:21):
So what do you think that disconnect is between hitters
like Kevin Sites, or teachers like Kevin Sites, or teachers
like Edgar Martinez and this particular team.
Speaker 7 (25:32):
Yeah, I don't.
Speaker 8 (25:32):
I definitely don't think it's a it's a disconnect. And
what I can tell you is that it's major League baseball.
It's hitting has always been hard. It's harder than ever
and and you know it's cyclical as well. Sometimes guys
have great seasons and then you come back and you
struggle to find it again. But then you know, you
find it at the right times. And some of these
guys that you certainly have the talent and the capability

to get really hot and carry an entire team. And
one thing I learned you know, when you playing on
postseason contending teams, nobody really remembers what you did during
the season. If you get hot at the right time,
you can become a postseason here or get your team
to the postseason and next thing you know, the team's
fighting for an opportunity to win a championships.

Yeah.

Well, Rowl, you mentioned being with a Dodger as Rollabanyez
as with us on the air, and I mean, obviously
those guys are stacked. Man, tell us about what it's
like being around Freeman, Muncie, Show Hay now, Trek scouble
Glass now yam a moto. I mean, what an unbelievable
clubhouse you guys have put together down there, and it's
so good that now people hate your guts for it.

By the way, you're you're like the Evil Empire of baseball.
What's it like being a part of that organization?

Yeah, I mean, you know, we were playing against the
Evil Empire of Baseball when I was, you know, coming
up and playing against them, and that wasn't fun. It's
certainly better to be the Evil Empire where you're you're
getting an opportunity to win. That being said, I could
just tell you that everybody from the top down the
organization deeply cares about winning. All the players deeply care
about winning, and they're just when you get around them,

they're just really normal, good dudes to be around. Dave
Roberts and our coaching staff as a phenomenal they do
a phenomenal job of keeping everybody accountable. They hold each
other accountable. But also they don't forget they work really hard,
but they also have a really good time together.

Yeah, Sovie and I had absolutely no problem with the
Dodgers getting Schooble. I mean, I think a lot of
people did, but we were like, hey, make yourself as
great as you possibly can. What would you say to
the people out there that would say, hey, yeah, this
is bad for baseball that the Dodgers are getting Trek.

Schooble, I would say that the entire purpose of playing
Major League Baseball or being part of a team is
to win. And if you know, as Andrew Friedman Alway says,
our north star is winning and everything is geared towards winning,
then you have to give yourself the absolute best opportunity
to win and to win win a championship, and we
owe it to our you know, our fans.

We owe it to our players, we are to our
ownership group.

We always sell us as in a group and as
an organization, so our fan come out, you know, and
support us. North of four million every season. We have
incredible fans and they deeply care about winning and we

Daughters are still riding and recently was recently in Traverse City, Michigan,
