We have to talk about the Mariners, and Jerry gives us his take on what they have and HAVE NOT done. What does he actually think about Dan Wilson and his ability to manage this team? the Tigers.

and they're never going to have perfect legislation, but it
seems like there needs to be some legislation.

I feel like it's necessary. I just want some uniform
rules and I want some consistency so that you know,
I saw Percy Allen earlier today and we're talking about
Husky basketball and I was like, I just don't know
what they're building. And before I even have like a
flight on Danny Sprinkle, It's like the system doesn't.

Allow you to build anything.

And while I think they're actually going to be a
top fifteen team, I say the same thing for Jetfish
and Husky.

I think he understands how to navigate these waters, but
for the rest of us, we just don't get to
do the whole Like, hey, this freshman class is going
to take it their first year. The second year they're
going to be mediocre. The third year, they're going to
be great. The fourth year some of the good kids
are going to go pro. But by the fourth year,

like they're.

Going to be really good. You just don't have that anymore.

And I as someone who has a ten year old
and a fourteen year old, and I'm trying to get
them in you know, they're into basketball in the soccer,
but trying to get them into like college sports, which
they aren't really into. It's hard to like pass tradition down.

And I use this line in my column today that'll
come out tomorrow in the Athletic tast Uh. I said,
you can't pass down a moving target. And that's the
way I feel. And so I think like a little
bit of structure is going to allow us to have

some ability to like not rent our devotion out to
these teams. And I know you've got I know you
feel that way, Softy, right, Like we we don't we
don't blame the athletes, like we want them to get
fair compensations, but we also don't want a world in
which your quarterback feels like you may not have to

like honor a concrat contractual agreement. It's ridiculous and and uh,
you just want to enjoy the damn thing and you
just want to see demand Williams junior season and how
he progressed without all the BS.

Right, well, I just want to be able to, you know,
get behind the guy and and you know, throw my
support behind him for more than a year, and you
know know that he's gonna be my quarterback for three
or four.

Years, right, I mean exactly.

And I don't know that about DeMont Williams. I don't
know if he's gonna be here next season. I mean,
God blessed Jet. He's talking about DeMont playing three more
years this year and two more with a five for
five thing. But I got no idea if we're gonna
go through the song and dance again.

I mean when you hear Jet say he's gonna be
here for five years total, or that he could be
here for five years total, what's your reaction to that?

I mean, you can't say that about anybody in the
whole sport, you know, Like, and also if he wants
up being a five for five guy, something went wrong
probably or like there's some level of performance that's gonna
leave us dissatisfied all of a sudden he's not winning
and not playing well in the big games like he

was his sophomore year, and we're gonna have issues there. Yeah,
if you gave me five years and the guy developed
like Jaden william or Jade Jade Daniels, I'm saying basketball, football,
baseball names like I've lost my daln mind. Uh. If
it's like one of those quarterbacks or who's in college

for a long time and like steadily progresses, like that's great,
but nobody's gonna ever last five years for the same
school unless they're a kid who is just like a
two star and like gradually works his way up and
as a homegrown kid who just grew up, you know,
wanting to wear that purple and gold.

So we got to pause on the voting for this
Protect College Sports Act?
Speaker 3 (07:38):
Does that mean anything in the near term?

I saw where Wilner has his over under of votes
it's going to pass. He thinks it's gonna fall short
by seven and a half. He says seven and a
half is his over under. What do you think is
gonna happen with it when it when it comes to
a vote.

Finally, Yeah, I mean the question is do they do
they squeeze it in now, but before they go on
resets or does it that doesn't have to resume in September.
You know, I thought like that this process that they
were going through now, starting the process means that they
should have the sixty votes, but whether they actually get

a chance to vote on it with all of the
business they have to do, you know, before or the
end of the weekend, and assuming that they're at the
end of the weekend, probably means like Friday, because I
don't think I don't think they're going to stay over
the weekend to pass a sportsville like you know, and
then it just kind of goes into just like election

cycle and like procedural chaos, and this is just the
Senate guys, Like we still got to go through the house,
and like I was hearing people wanting the inclusion of
trends and culture war type stuff in there, which has
nothing to do with like nil and.

Revenue sharing, and just.
Speaker 6 (08:57):
Trying to formalize some rules so we can get out
here and play ball with some consistency. That all that
stuff bothers me right like in our climate. But I
do commend them for being able to push a bipartisan
effort this far along in these polarizing times, and I

think if people sit back, I mean, I went through
one hundred and seventy one pages and like reading that
on your computer screen, is it really destroys your eyes?
But I finished it and thought about it for a while,
and I'm like, you know what, I think this is
a step. It's not a cure all. And anybody who
has one little problem in college.

Sports they want to.
Speaker 6 (09:41):
Utilize and say, let's just struck the whole thing down
because I'm mad about this one damn thing.

And that's not the point.
Speaker 6 (09:48):
The point is like, hey, we need some policies that
meet the.
Speaker 4 (09:54):
Times where they are now.
Speaker 6 (09:56):
We're not going back in the past. We can't think
way too far in the future. We have to hit
the presence in stride and then we go from there
when we have a little bit of consistency and some structure.
And I think ultimately it's not perfect, but I think
ultimately this bill does that well.

You mentioned that you hadn't seen the game tonight. You
made the right decision. By the way, Good for you,
because there's no way to sugarcoat this right now. This
team sticks. I mean, they just got hammered by the
Tigers twenty one to four. They've scored four runs since
the trade deadline. Looks like they're devoid of any passion,
leadership drive whatsoever. Larry Stone was on yesterday and said
he's got a hard time imagining Dan coming back to

THEMS don't make the playoffs. I mean, what's your take
overall on just what's happened to this baseball team this year?
Speaker 6 (11:05):
Man, it's incredibly disappointing. I knew, knowing their history, I
think that they've only had one other time where they
made the postseason, and back to back years. I knew
this season would be more of a struggle. But I
looked at them on paper, and I looked at everybody
else in the Al West on paper, and I was like, man,
they have such margin for error, Like even if this

is like an eighty six eighty eight win team.
Speaker 4 (11:32):
They're gonna win that damn division and get in this thing.
Speaker 6 (11:34):
And they're built, like we saw last year, like they're
a team that's built to really make some noise in
the postseason with this rotation, and they're just blowing it,
you know, And when you look back at the larger
picture of the last five years or so, you know,
when they've been in this window.
Speaker 4 (11:56):
To have only made like one deep.
Speaker 6 (11:59):
Run in the postseason. Reason that I've only qualified for
the postseason twice, Like this was the year all of
it needed to come together and it hasn't, and there
has to be some kind of repercussions. You can't just
say at the front office, can't just say, oh, these
guys underperformed, and you can't just look at the manager
and say, you know, he's doing the best with what

he's got, Like something's got to give somewhere. And it's
sad because like, I don't think we're going to see baseball.
Speaker 8 (12:30):
I don't think we're going to see a full one
sixty two next year.
Speaker 6 (12:33):
And I was hoping that, like all of our hope
could go into a fantastic postseason that really left us
feed in for more and willing to deal with all
the bs that we're.
Speaker 4 (12:45):
Going to have to deal with in the offseason.
Speaker 6 (12:48):
But now it feels like time is running out on
this team just to just to start. I mean, it's
not like they're deep out of it, either wild card
or division. But you can't, I mean, you can't lose
a series twenty one to four, lose two out of
three to a team that has basically kind of given up.

I mean, they traded tired Schooble and Mies and they're
trying to play the middle a little bit and remain
slightly competitive. But that's a team that you should have
swept if you were really rolling, especially at home, at
least win two out of three. To get blown out
of two of those games. Man, And they just have
a way I think they care, but they just have

a way of looking lifeless because they're such a bad
offensive team and they have no I mean, they have
no boxing to them right, Like it's either they're hitting
the long ball or they're not scoring either. They're pitching
and like their pitchers more and more now have to

get eight, ten, twelve strikeouts because the defense is so
damn bad. It's I've experienced a lot of frustrating Mariner seasons,
Like I've tried to write through a lot of them
when I was at the Seattle Times and be a
voice of reason as someone who sits back and watches.

Now more than our right and follows them like.
Speaker 6 (14:18):
It's it's it may be the most frustrating year. It's
hard to beat eight, when people thought that they were
gonna be okay and they lost a hundred games with
one hundred million.

Dollar payroll, But like that was like a.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
Certain kind of terrible, But this one.
Speaker 6 (14:38):
Like there was legitimate reasons to expect that they were
going to go far, and you just sit back and think, like, man,
were we wrong? Like are we too optimistic? Have we
just not seen enough good baseball to know what's true
and what's not?

Like it's it's really really jarring.

To have to watch watch them every day and to think, like,
how could we all be so far off center about
this team?
Speaker 5 (15:06):
Well, Jerry, you mentioned there that a change has to
be made if this continues at the end of the year,
and I would totally agree with you. I think one
hundred out of one hundred Mariner fans would totally agree
with you, But does Stanton agree with you? Do the
Mariners agree with you? Because this isn't Bob Jones, the
hitting coach of the Twins that they hired a year
and a half ago to coach's team.

This is Mariner legend Dan Wilson.

And that's what worries me, is that because it's Mariner
legend Dan Wilson, that he is going to get more
than every benefit of the doubt to continue his tenure year.

I like Dan dan Wilson a lot, you know, even
though I still hold it against him that one time.

He didn't call me back when I wanted to write
what essentially would have been a.

I feel for him in this. I do think he's
a stand up guy, even though when he stands up.

fourteen year old, you know, drive a luxury vehicle or

That on most in most normal situations, the manager is
only going to affect maybe two three wins either way.

A five to eight wins. They're five to eight wins
worse than they would be if they had a different
manager and coaching staff.

I mean, I think they've left.

A lot on the table that just could be handled
in you know, it's not just like the way that
he manages like on game days. I think there's an
approach with the entire coaching staff that has to change.
Obviously hitting, uh, defensively, I think there's a lot of

stuff there that you could look back and you could
say managing and or coaching.

Has made this team five to eight games.

Worse, you know.

And and so what I'm what I'm telling you guys is
if you if you brought me not not the best
manager in the game, but if you brought me the
eighth best manager in baseball, I think this team would
be in the first place in the Also with the flaws,
even with the flaws that that they've had. And hey,

it's another one of those moments for the Mariners.

Do we want to win or do we not?

Dan Wilson was a great Mariner. The uh cale is
gonna have to put what five six great years together
or at least good the great years.

However, Dan is not a statue outside of the stadium, right,
He's not. And I know Edgar is his hitting coach,
but he's not Edgar Martinez. He's not each your row.
He's not Ken Griffey Jr. You don't like you got
this job without any managerial experience. You got him to

the playoffs, you got him a few ops from the
World Series. I thank you for a guy who was
a first time manager. Do I think all in all
you have done a good job for a first time manager?

Have you done the job as the manager of a
team that has super high expectations?
Speaker 4 (18:42):

And in that case, hey, you know, I saw Georgetown
have to tell Patrick Ewing, hey man, you'd the greatest
ployt ever. That ain't good enough. You got to get
up out of here. And they were like two three
years too late before doing that. And have we seen
Georgetown back in the NCAA.

Tournament since then? Don't know, these opportunities you.
Speaker 6 (19:02):
Cannot squander and so it doesn't I mean, like let's
stop all like the little League stuff like, hey, your
greatness in your times with that franchise. Let's separate the
player from the manager. The player is an immortal, the
manager has got to go.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
Yeah, yeah, his h His legacy is secure no matter
what as a player, no doubt. But I just wonder, like, Dick,
does you know John Stanton asked him to basically un
retire from baseball and help this baseball team two years
ago when they hired Scott Service. And I do believe
that because of that, he'll give him every benefit of
the doubt, along with Edgar Martinez who also came out

of kind of retirement to help out the baseball team.

So see how Hey, I agree with you. I mean
there's Jerry.

There's two give him a payday, Like, hey, you can't
manage this team, but you can still make h a

are zero to five in his last five starts. He's
got a five point eight one ERA in those five games.

Yeah, definitely nowhere near the ideal first inning. I think
I ended up with forty pitch I would assume probably
the most pitches I've ever thrown in an inning in
the big leagues at least. But we started off, you know,
first bat of the game, felt like barely missed on
three of the four balls and then got Glaber out.
(23:05):
I thought I made a made a good pitch to
to Dingler on the home run. It was a cutter
just off the plate and he got to it, put
a good swing on it, and then fastball at Green
at his neck that he somehow he got to hit
it down the line, and then I don't know, after that,
(23:27):
we kind of made a couple of competitive pitches to
Torgossen ended up you know, getting out of it. Just
really really frustrating way to start the game, you know,
just immediately put us in a hole and you know
we're on defense for it felt like thirty minutes for me.
(23:47):
But you know, overall, definite, I mean, obviously not happy
with how how the first inning went, but felt like
we we settled in. We made a lot of good
pitches after that. I was happy to get through five
with you know, after throwing forty in the first but uh,
I just you know, I can't start the game like that.

We got to be more competitive. It's the leadoff walked
start the games. Never ideal. It's just I mean, it's
really it's a weird ding, you know, Like I said,
I felt like I made I had some some bad
pitches mixed in, but the balls that they hit, besides
the splitter that stayed up to Keith, I felt like,
you know, I had a lot of good pitches that inning,

just you know, I didn't go my way. Oh key
is that splitter?

Because it felt like in that first inning had a
few that were buried in the dirt. And then second inning,
you know, in Kinstry, the split started splitting again, and
then then it felt like the whole outing got more
on track.

For you Yeah, it's big. I mean it's you know,
one of my main off speed pitches, and you know,
a line up with some some pretty pretty good left
handed hitters and and quite a bit. You know, it's
it's a pitch that I need, and I mean I
didn't I didn't think it was. It was too bad
in the first you know, besides just really the location wasn't.

But yeah, really, I mean after the after the first
we started, you know, mixing in a little more off speed.
They were overall more quality pitches and we were able
to you know, well we did four innings on fifty
pitches and one inning on forty, so be able to

settle in just have to you know, get it from
the jump and not after we've already you know, been kicked.

feel like we always had to be on the hunt.

having like that confidence swagger about us. I feel like

just play just playing with so much confidence that we're
just having fun, to be honest, and where we have
that feeling this year for sure, just just just like
our people coming back and having and working together this

to see see him just getting better one day at
a time, asking questions, and he's honestly way ahead of

for a kid that's eighteen, and he's only going to

what you see across from you with that offensive line.
You know the transition those guys went through from the

not one guy coming back in twenty twenty four. I
think Jed said they had seven offensive linemen for spring
ball when they showed up, and now they got seventeen.
I mean, to my eye, it looks a lot better.
What are you seeing from that offensive line group from
your perspective.

Man, honestly the most the most, the most connected, and
most violid office of lineman I see, to be honest,
like just lining up against Landing, John Camp, Drew and Cody,
I feel like they're very connected and that's what makes
them play at the highest level. But it's been great
to see him and battle it out through through the spring.

I feel like being me and me and John are
really close. Just being with a battle with him every
day was was for sure awesome.

fair compensations, but we also don't want a world in

you just want to enjoy the damn thing and you
just want to see demand Williams junior season and how
he progressed without all the BS.

support behind him for more than a year, and you

if you gave me five years and the guy developed
like Jaden william or Jade Jade Daniels, I'm saying basketball, football,
baseball names like I've lost my daln mind. Uh. If
it's like one of those quarterbacks or who's in college

for a long time and like steadily progresses, like that's great,
but nobody's gonna ever last five years for the same
school unless they're a kid who is just like a
two star and like gradually works his way up and
as a homegrown kid who just grew up, you know,
wanting to wear that purple and gold.

they squeeze it in now, but before they go on
resets or does it that doesn't have to resume in September.
You know, I thought like that this process that they
were going through now, starting the process means that they
should have the sixty votes, but whether they actually get

a chance to vote on it with all of the
business they have to do, you know, before or the
end of the weekend, and assuming that they're at the
end of the weekend, probably means like Friday, because I
don't think I don't think they're going to stay over
the weekend to pass a sportsville like you know, and
then it just kind of goes into just like election

cycle and like procedural chaos, and this is just the
Senate guys, Like we still got to go through the house,
and like I was hearing people wanting the inclusion of
trends and culture war type stuff in there, which has
nothing to do with like nil and.

Trying to formalize some rules so we can get out
here and play ball with some consistency. That all that
stuff bothers me right like in our climate. But I
do commend them for being able to push a bipartisan
effort this far along in these polarizing times, and I

think if people sit back, I mean, I went through
one hundred and seventy one pages and like reading that
on your computer screen, is it really destroys your eyes?
But I finished it and thought about it for a while,
and I'm like, you know what, I think this is
a step. It's not a cure all. And anybody who
has one little problem in college.

Utilize and say, let's just struck the whole thing down
because I'm mad about this one damn thing.

We're not going back in the past. We can't think

And I think ultimately it's not perfect, but I think

overall on just what's happened to this baseball team this year?

Man, it's incredibly disappointing. I knew, knowing their history, I
think that they've only had one other time where they
made the postseason, and back to back years. I knew
this season would be more of a struggle. But I
looked at them on paper, and I looked at everybody
else in the Al West on paper, and I was like, man,
they have such margin for error, Like even if this

is like an eighty six eighty eight win team.

They're gonna win that damn division and get in this thing.

And they're built, like we saw last year, like they're
a team that's built to really make some noise in
the postseason with this rotation, and they're just blowing it,
you know, And when you look back at the larger
picture of the last five years or so, you know,
when they've been in this window.

To have only made like one deep.

Run in the postseason. Reason that I've only qualified for
the postseason twice, Like this was the year all of
it needed to come together and it hasn't, and there
has to be some kind of repercussions. You can't just
say at the front office, can't just say, oh, these
guys underperformed, and you can't just look at the manager
and say, you know, he's doing the best with what

he's got, Like something's got to give somewhere. And it's
sad because like, I don't think we're going to see baseball.

I don't think we're going to see a full one
sixty two next year.

And I was hoping that, like all of our hope
could go into a fantastic postseason that really left us
feed in for more and willing to deal with all
the bs that we're.

But now it feels like time is running out on
this team just to just to start. I mean, it's
not like they're deep out of it, either wild card
or division. But you can't, I mean, you can't lose

three to a team that has basically kind of given up.

I mean, they traded tired Schooble and Mies and they're
trying to play the middle a little bit and remain
slightly competitive. But that's a team that you should have
swept if you were really rolling, especially at home, at
least win two out of three. To get blown out
of two of those games. Man, And they just have
a way I think they care, but they just have

a way of looking lifeless because they're such a bad
offensive team and they have no I mean, they have
no boxing to them right, Like it's either they're hitting
the long ball or they're not scoring either. They're pitching
and like their pitchers more and more now have to

get eight, ten, twelve strikeouts because the defense is so
damn bad. It's I've experienced a lot of frustrating Mariner seasons,
Like I've tried to write through a lot of them
when I was at the Seattle Times and be a
voice of reason as someone who sits back and watches.

Now more than our right and follows them like.

It's it's it may be the most frustrating year. It's
hard to beat eight, when people thought that they were
gonna be okay and they lost a hundred games with
one hundred million.

Like there was legitimate reasons to expect that they were
going to go far, and you just sit back and think, like, man,

just not seen enough good baseball to know what's true

To have to watch watch them every day and to think, like,
how could we all be so far off center about
this team?

Well, Jerry, you mentioned there that a change has to
be made if this continues at the end of the year,
and I would totally agree with you. I think one
hundred out of one hundred Mariner fans would totally agree
with you, But does Stanton agree with you? Do the
Mariners agree with you? Because this isn't Bob Jones, the
hitting coach of the Twins that they hired a year
and a half ago to coach's team.

And that's what worries me, is that because it's Mariner

manager in the game, but if you brought me the

be in the first place in the Also with the flaws,

Yeah, definitely nowhere near the ideal first inning. I think
I ended up with forty pitch I would assume probably
the most pitches I've ever thrown in an inning in
the big leagues at least. But we started off, you know,
first bat of the game, felt like barely missed on
three of the four balls and then got Glaber out.

I thought I made a made a good pitch to
to Dingler on the home run. It was a cutter
just off the plate and he got to it, put
a good swing on it, and then fastball at Green
at his neck that he somehow he got to hit
it down the line, and then I don't know, after that,

we kind of made a couple of competitive pitches to
Torgossen ended up you know, getting out of it. Just
really really frustrating way to start the game, you know,
just immediately put us in a hole and you know
we're on defense for it felt like thirty minutes for me.

But you know, overall, definite, I mean, obviously not happy
with how how the first inning went, but felt like
we we settled in. We made a lot of good
pitches after that. I was happy to get through five
with you know, after throwing forty in the first but uh,
I just you know, I can't start the game like that.

We got to be more competitive. It's the leadoff walked
start the games. Never ideal. It's just I mean, it's
really it's a weird ding, you know, Like I said,
I felt like I made I had some some bad
pitches mixed in, but the balls that they hit, besides
the splitter that stayed up to Keith, I felt like,
you know, I had a lot of good pitches that inning,

just you know, I didn't go my way. Oh key
is that splitter?

Because it felt like in that first inning had a
few that were buried in the dirt. And then second inning,
you know, in Kinstry, the split started splitting again, and
then then it felt like the whole outing got more
on track.

one of my main off speed pitches, and you know,
a line up with some some pretty pretty good left
handed hitters and and quite a bit. You know, it's
it's a pitch that I need, and I mean I

having like that confidence swagger about us. I feel like

what you see across from you with that offensive line.
You know the transition those guys went through from the

think Jed said they had seven offensive linemen for spring
ball when they showed up, and now they got seventeen.
I mean, to my eye, it looks a lot better.
What are you seeing from that offensive line group from
your perspective.

Man, honestly the most the most, the most connected, and
most violid office of lineman I see, to be honest,
like just lining up against Landing, John Camp, Drew and Cody,
I feel like they're very connected and that's what makes
them play at the highest level. But it's been great
to see him and battle it out through through the spring.

I feel like being me and me and John are
really close. Just being with a battle with him every
day was was for sure awesome.
