and hope to convince us that everything will be okay

at some point, our friend, Larry Stone. Larry, how are
you man?

I'm doing great. It sounds like you hit your breaking
point last night.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Yeah, you know, I'm I'm just tired, man. Honestly, I'm
just tired. You know, every year, every couple of years,
you know of this, they give us a little bit
of hope and then they just kick us right in
the crotch. I mean, this has really been going on
for four years now. You know, they should have made
the playoffs, should be making it four years in a
row with the talent that they've got. But this team
(02:11):
is massively underachieving in my opinion, or am I crazy
and that maybe this roster just really isn't as good
as I thought it was. I mean, this has just
been an absolute collapse by this baseball team of eparate proportions,
and it's been going on the entire year.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
What the hell's going on at T Mobile Park? Man? Yeah,
I mean it.
Speaker 5 (02:33):
I don't think we were all wrong and thinking this
was a World Series caliber team been Every expert in
baseball media picked the Mariners to win the division and
many picked them to get to the World Series and
to win it. So, yeah, it's and last night's game,
you know, I'm reluctant to call it the worst loss
of the season because there've been so many games you
(02:55):
could call the worst loss. But I would call it
the most disappointing loss because it was sort of that
it was supposed to be the jumping off point to
this new look Mariners. With the trade deadline passed and
Ward in the lineup and Donovan back, and it was
more of the same, just as meek and offense as
(03:15):
they've had for the last really all season, and so
and then the new reliever you get, you know, goes
in there and lays a huge egg just everything everything
went wrong. Instead of being the hope for a big turnaround,
it looks like more of the same, even though you know,
one game is just one game, but it was not.
(03:39):
I think it just cemented to a lot of people's
minds that things aren't going to be different.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
Well, Larry, let's go back to you said something there
in your response that that has me a little bit intrigued.
Maybe you can amplify on when you said, virtually every
baseball expert in the media had the Mariners winning the
division and you know, adder near going to the World Series,
et cetera. There's no question that that's true what you said,
(04:08):
But how much of the media experts are really looking
at how much of it is is looking at what
the other guy said or that, or just kind of
going with the flow on that I mean, or is
it just say, hey, we'll just take their aggregate or
their average OPS or something to the team based on
(04:28):
the back of their baseball cards, and because of that,
we'll say these guys are the favorites. I just wonder
the process because it seems like we have to open
ourselves up to Dave's question that maybe this team has
been overvalued in terms of what their potential is.
Speaker 5 (04:46):
Well, I think the predictions and the high hopes were
based on the fact that they they went to the
final two innings of the ALCS with a chance to
get to the World Series. Added a guy like Brendan Donovan,
who you know, has been a pretty much of a
disaster because he's been hurt, but on paper looked like
(05:07):
a huge addition to this lineup, and you and they
re signed Naylor, and it looked like the big three
of Naylor, Cal and Julio we're going to, you know,
be the type of uh, middle of the order bats
that can propel a team. With the starting rotation that
(05:29):
everybody knew was one of the best in baseballs, no
one could foresee cal Rawley's you know, epic epic fall.
And I was discussing with somebody, not only is it
the biggest one season collapse in baseball history, but I
have a hard time thinking of one in sports history,
from going from from sixty homers, you know, legendary season
(05:52):
to to being one of the worst players in baseball
this year. Who could foresee that?
Speaker 4 (05:55):
And Naylor, you know.
Speaker 5 (05:57):
No no pop whatsoever, no homer since June fourteenth, I think,
and just his slugging percentage is roughly JP Crawfords, which
is not what you want from him. And then Julio,
I think we saw it was going to be a
breakout season for him and it's been a huge disappointment
as well. So I think those factors were no one
(06:21):
could foresee those, and I think those have been the
biggest reason for the fact that they're not living up
to expectations.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Well, Larry Stones with us and Larry you know, I
mentioned this earlier. Twenty twenty three. You lead the American
League in ERA, you missed the playoffs. Twenty twenty four,
you lead Major League Baseball in ERA, have a ten
game lead at one point, you missed the playoffs. You
make it last year, and now you're lucky enough to
play in the worst division in baseball. In your four
games under five hundred, we really should be talking about
(06:50):
these guys potentially making the playoffs for the first time
ever in franchise history in four years in a row. Instead,
they're struggling to make it in consecutive years for the
first time in twenty five. So I believe that they
have been underperforming really in a lot of ways in
the last four years, and I wonder if they miss it,
does somebody pay the price for this?
Speaker 3 (07:11):
Honestly?
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Does does John Stanton have it in him to ask
Dan Wilson to step aside? Does he ask Jerry to
step aside so somebody else could maybe take this thing
to the next level, like Chris Peterson took over for
Steve Sarksian and took it to the next level at
you dub back in the day. How do you think
that Dynamic will look at the end of the year
if they missed the playoffs?
Speaker 5 (07:33):
First of all, if you go back to twenty two
when they did make the playoffs and broke the drought,
wouldn't it be five years in a row that they
are looking at.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Thank you, thank you very much.
Speaker 5 (07:42):
Yes, yeah, I think if they don't make the playoffs
this year, I think either. I find it hard to
believe that Dan will be back next year. Uh, you know,
if he wasn't Dan Wilson franchise icon, beloved guy that
(08:02):
everybody likes. I don't think that he would still be manager.
To be honest, this is a This is a sort
of situation that is the textbook case of a team
that needs a managerial change, or that leads to a
managerial change, a hyped team that is struggling so badly.
(08:22):
But I think I think they have a hard time
letting go Dan in the middle of the season, but
because there's still the hope that he could turn it
around like they did turn it around in the second
half last year. But if that doesn't happen, I think
the likelihood is either that Dan Dan would maybe resign
(08:43):
or they would let him go. As as far as Jerry,
you know, he's built a team that's one that's that's
five years in a row. They've had a winning record,
which this team is, this franchise has never done. They've
got a top five ranked farm system. You know, I
think he I think he could survive this. I think
(09:05):
the question is that I think the next manager should
be somebody with a lot more experience. The two managerial
hires that the photo has had have both been guys
who have not only never managed in the major leagues
but have never managed anywhere. In Scott Servis and Dan Wilson,
they were both complete managerial neo fights and I think
(09:28):
you need us. I think we've seen that, you go.
I think Scott developed into a really good manager, but
I think I think you need somebody with a little
bit more cachet at this point in this team's development.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
Yeah, and there's some names available. I mean, you know,
there's guys like Bruce Bochie out there. Obviously Alex Cora
is out there. I don't know what Boche's desire is
to manage again, you know, rock Old Bell Deli, Brian
Snitker with the former Braves manager. I guess I just
wonder Larry do, Jerry and John want a guy with
a strong personality that may go against the grain a

little bit regarding their philosophy on how to build and
how to perform and set a lineup on a daily
basis in baseball.
Speaker 5 (10:16):
Well, that's a valid, valid question, and based on the
two hires that I just talked about, I think they
are comfortable with with somebody who doesn't have that kind
of power. You know, you you bring in a guy
like Loo Panella, you know, back in the day, he's
not gonna he's not gonna stand for that sort of thing.
And a lot of those names that you mentioned. You know,
I'd add Buck Showalter as another guy who's out there
(10:38):
and there you go, and I think wants to manage again.
You know, I had maybe not be at their comfort level,
but I think it may be what they need to do,
and they may come around to that and we'll, you know,
we'll see how forceful and what influence Stanton has in
that regard. I mean, I was just looking at the

Fangraft playoff odds. They're still listed despite all this. It's
forty seven point five percent chance of making the playoffs.
So this could all be a moot point. I mean,
you look at the Botston Red Sox. The Red Sox
are twenty four and three since July third. I don't
think they're any more talented than the Mariners. I mean,
they they do have that kind of run in them,
(11:23):
but we've been waiting for it all year long and
it hasn't come close to happening. You know, there's there's
still time for it. Or yeah, I don't think it'll
have to be twenty four and three, But if they
suddenly run off nine out of twelve, they'll be in
pretty good playoff shape. So you know, they say still
because of the horrible division that you talked about and

the mediocre American League, they are not completely buried yet.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
No they're not. And Larry Stone with us. So you
mentioned obviously they're going to do this. Calihulio and Josh
are going to have to start playing to their potential.
But what about the acquisitions made at the deadline, Castillo,
the departure him, Just what was your reaction to what
the Mariners did here this week?
Speaker 5 (12:11):
I thought it was kind of a C plus trade deadline. Uh,
there was a there was a crying need for for
a leverage relief arm and they didn't get one. They
got Sir Anthony Dominguez, who could be a you know,
an okay piece. I'm not going to judge him by
by what happened last night. Uh, you know, guys have
bad games, you know, the difficult situation your first game,
(12:36):
and he's probably traveling and arrangements and all that. So,
but he's not He's not a late inning leverage arm,
eighth inning guy that they needed. Ward is a good
pick up, a right handed bat that they needed, but
his numbers are not good and in a team mobile park,
and we've just seen so many guys that they bring
(12:59):
in whose numbers look good, you know, on paper as
the right handed guy, and it just doesn't work out here.
From Solano to AJ Pollock to ref Snyder and Lastelle,
all those guys that we've you know, they just didn't
work out. So I think it's fair to be just
a little bit skeptical, But I do love his his
(13:20):
the fact he leads the league in walks and he's
got on base percentage over three eighty. That's what this
lineup needs. And with you you look at the lineup
they threw out there last night, and it should be
a really dynamic, good lineup with Donovan Back and Ward
and the three guys that we just talked about in
the middle, and Cole Young having a breakout year can Zone,
(13:41):
you know, it should be a good lineup. It's just
so frustrating to see him just have games, so many
games where they're just non competitive, you know, four hits,
five hits, one run, no runs, two runs. It's just
happening on an almost daily basis.
Speaker 1 (13:59):
And.
Speaker 5 (14:02):
Looking good on paper doesn't mean anything if you don't
do it on the field.
Speaker 2 (14:06):
Yeah, no doubt whether they're throwing the same line up
out tonight that they threw out last night, Larry, A
little bit surprising to me that among the three potential
swing guys in the outfield, Canzone a Rose Arena and
Ward a Rose Arena, to me is the worst offender.
But he's back out there again and left and Ward
is over there at d H tonight against the Tigers.
(14:29):
Does that surprise you that they're they're continuing to stick
with Randy a Rose Arena in left field versus maybe
giving him a spot to play DH and let Taylor
Ward go out there in left field.
Speaker 3 (14:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (14:41):
I think what they're ultimately going to do is put
Ward in right field, put Canzone at DH, and leave
Randy and left. I think the reason War isn't playing
yesterday and today in the field is because he hasn't
played right field much and he I think they want
to work him out there a little bit before they
stick them out there. But yeah, I mean that would
be the alternative. Then you've then you have can Zone
(15:06):
playing every day. I feel that gets the decision is
who's a better defensive outfield canzone or or a rose arena,
and I think they've decided it's they've decided it's a
rose arena because they're leaving him and left from everything
I've heard and Red well.
Speaker 2 (15:24):
They I mean, I mean, I don't know. That's blind
to me. I think he's terrible.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
I mean, I don't know.

Maybe I'm missing something, man, Maybe I'm missing something. Somebody
texted us the other day and said Randy has expressed
that he doesn't want a d H and which I said,
who cares what he thinks?

Somebody's terrible as a left fielder. So I don't know, man.

They just need wins, and they need him bad starting
tonight because this Tigers team is right in front of them,
and they have waved the white flag, by the way,
as have the Orioles. Both of them have waived the
white flag. All right, Hey, we got a lot of
stuff that we got to get to, but we'll have
to wait till next week because we're up against the clock.

Depoto with some thoughts on the trade deadline and how
the Mariners have performed so far.

I know it's gonna sound a certain to say this
is a tough roster, so prove you know, we have
not played well. We've we've underperformed our talent level. But
finding you know, upgrades from a player perspective in any
of these positions lead you bast best player probably the
one we have with the session being that we wanted to.

Really ddit that both then when he knew we needed.

To have to especially our b left but a right
hand hit or.

Would be preferable.

You know, we feel like with Taylor will work. We
got at least, if not the best right hand bat
that moved at this deadline, then certainly on the short
list and the best right hand bats, you know, a
lead on Bay skills. He's he's been a good performance
league over six years now. But hey, fitz Hard our
team quite well. Obviously an everyday player who can handle

both pretty particularly good against the lefties. And in the
Louis deal, we brought back Sir Anthony. The thing is
who has had you know, vast experience at leverage moments
and obviously certain perfections, but it's a big time batness
or who has pitched an important role in a lot
of offense. And with Carlos Marcus do back on the

near horizon of Matt Brash shortly thereafter, and we feel
like that combination makes us better. And you know, we
tried to stay in tune with other things that might help,
you know, make the team a little better, and unfortunately
we weren't able to push anything else across. But we
feel like the addition is particularly in the short term
of Taylor reward, you know, the return of Brendan Donovan,
the acquisition of Saranthony de Minguez. I think the lack

of trauma associated simply having a five man in rotation
is all a positive step hopefully gets smoothed in the
right direction.

I don't how much of that you caught, By the way,
it sounds like someone needs to turn down the trouble
by the way, on the old Kenwood receiver from the
nineteen seventies.

Yeah, right, but clearly, you know, look honest about it,
we haven't played well, right, and they're hoping that the
bullpen guy's coming back can make a difference here when

I mean, this is like, enough is enough. This is
why we get into these arguments on the air about Hey,
you know, who cares what happens in April and May.
It's all right, they're gonna be fine. They'll pull it

out in August. Julio can struggle because they'll do great
in the second half of the year. That's not happening, man.
So it drives me nuts when people have takes like
that that it's okay to suck out first because you'll
figure it out in the second half of the year. Well,
guess what, so far, it's almost the middle of August.

sense of urgency here man starting tonight.

Well, there has to be. I also starred on his
comments the lack of drama about the piggyback situation that
they well, that's obviously a concession that there was drama.
There's a lot of words he could have chose. He
chose drama to describe what the the piggyback situation had

But I don't know if you did that unwittingly or
what have you. But it's an acknowledgment by him that
drama that that is not that the uh, I guess
it's a noun, but that is not the way you
want to describe, you know, that that decision. And for

that we brought on this station, you know, has told
you you know, you've you're right there from the beginning,
you never liked it. Every guest you had that had
ever played, you know, a half an inning of baseball
said this is a bad idea. Now you've got the

that period could be described as, at least in some
regard as drama. That's the word.

Yeah, I mean it sounds like to me, he's regretting
that they did it, right. I mean, that's the way
I took that, that you know, it was a mistake,
and I mean, I just think it's just, you know,
if they missed the playoffs this year, this will be
remembered by some people as the piggyback here. Remember that
thing they did in twenty twenty six where they were,
you know, doing the piggyback and the six man rotation. So,
you know, just their lack of any real commitment to anything,

you know, going back and forth. One day they're doing this,
one day they're doing that. I thought it was a
clown show. And I've said that from the start, the
way this whole thing was handled. So I'm glad it's over.
But I'll tell you what's out over His Hard Knocks
just started last night.

You thought it was great, and the reaction has been
really good looking forward to episode number two and he
I'm just curious. I mean, everything we're seeing from Mike
McDonald is all positive, you know, and it's hard to
really be this confident in a guy. It's almost like
there's gotta be a wart somewhere, right, There's gotta be
something about this guy that maybe resembles a little bit

of an imperfection. Does he have bad skin? Does he
have a couple of hair is out of place? Is
he a slob at home when he go?

Is he does he not use shampoo the way that
you know some people do and just washes his hair

Or is he really this perfect?

I mean, you know when when I studied, when they
first acquired him, you know what I said, My take
on him was right, Hello, right, I know you're looking
asking me. Yeah, you love the guy?

You love the guy? Yeaheah?

And sorry, yeah no, the uh I think.

The co said he was the best defensive mind on
planet Earth. That's what you said, so and I.

step out on a limb here. Don't regret saying it.
You know, I call him Mozart because Mozart is undisputedly
the greatest musical mind for accomplishments under the age of
forty in the history of planet Earth. All right, right,
I mean, if if you need to dispute that, it's

not Michael Jackson's, it's not Paul McCartney, it's Mozart. And
you know, to me it looks like a seventeen year
old kid, so kind of a prodigy. So hints hints
the occasional reference and tongue and cheek calling him Mozart.
But if you made me gun to the temple, say
any concern, it would be only one of two things.

Number One, every single scheme in all of football ever,
the veer, the Ie formation, the spread, whatever it is,
the eighty five Chicago Bears, the Pete Carroll cover three,
every scheme that has ever been dominant, and the pre
eminent scheme on that side of the ball, They've all

been solved, right right, And so he he's going to
have to adapt. He's got he's got his scheme now,
but he's gonna have to evolve, and I think he's
smart enough to do that. And then the other potentially,
because again this is hard for me, because I I
freaking love the guy. I wouldn't trade him for one
coach in the NFL, not one, not Sean McVeigh, not

con nobody. But if there were to be, if I
were to draft a concern, it would sound something like,
he's such a good guy that in year one, the
players really respond to that kind of players coach, young
energetic players coach. But if the you know, over a

period of three or four years, five years, that would
the players would they start to to slack a little
bit because the whip isn't getting cracked enough?

Look, that I would be on flimsy ground. I wouldn't
feel solid about advancing that argument. But if you said
to me, are there any two things that can derail
this thing? That would be the direction I would go.
But like I said, man, I freaking I don't like
this coach. I love this coach. I love his style, right,

I love everything about it. I think you see it
in in Hard Knocks. So I'm about as bullish and
and big at Seahawk fan is as is damn near
I've ever been in my life. And and that goes
back from year one and seventy six.

But if that's if that's the biggest concern you've got,
I think we all feel pretty comfortable, right, because what
you're talking about take away those concerns that you've got
about Mike McDonald, and you're almost talking about a perfect
head coach, right, and nobody's perfect, right. I mean, those
concerns first of all, the concern about it we got
to break here, by the way. But the concern about
a guy not being able to adapt when offenses adapt,

that's a concern for every defensive minded head coach in
the NFL and every defensive coordinator in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (26:24):
And how a guy does.
Speaker 2 (26:26):
In year three, year four is more of a player's coach,
would be a concern for every player's coach that there's
it's ever come around the NFL.
Speaker 4 (26:33):
And the pretense is not. Okay, Dave, here's my concerns.
It was under the guys that well, if you had
to drum up, you had to just X mey helo
out of nothing. In Latin an argument, that would be
it so gotcha?

hill and and uh to start for them, and and
you know we need to make our you know, offensive

Yeah, I think, you know, he was a guy that
that you could count on in a lot of different
situations and and versatil you know, we talked about versatility
in position and being able to play all over the field.
But for bullfing guys to be able to pitch in
different parts.

Of the football game is huge, and you know, good
quality innings anywhere we put him, and you know, I
think even found himself in some some pretty high leverage
situations at times, and so to get him back clearly
is huge.

And we're going, all right, well, there's a little bit
from Dan Wilson as we fade him out. By the way,
is that a microcosm of what's going to happen with
his job at some point on six and oh Brian
Wu six and oh with a two point two six
ERA at home against Drew Anderson, who, by the way,
is having a bit of a rough year. Four and
four with a four point two four e RA. This

guy the last four years played four years total, two
years in Japan, two years in Korea, and now he's
back in the States. The M's have won six in
a row at home with Wu on the mound, and
they need him to be big time tonight.

Let's hope that matters today. Stefon Diggs on the verge
of a one year, twelve million dollars deal with the
Commanders and the Rams today giving a tryout to some

last night from the MS. But joining us right now
on the air, our friend to give us some answers
and hope to convince us that everything will be okay

at some point, our friend, Larry Stone. Larry, how are
you man?
Speaker 5 (01:46):
I'm doing great. It sounds like you hit your breaking
point last night.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Yeah, you know, I'm I'm just tired, man. Honestly, I'm
just tired. You know, every year, every couple of years,
you know of this, they give us a little bit
of hope and then they just kick us right in
the crotch. I mean, this has really been going on
for four years now. You know, they should have made
the playoffs, should be making it four years in a
row with the talent that they've got. But this team
(02:11):
is massively underachieving in my opinion, or am I crazy
and that maybe this roster just really isn't as good
as I thought it was. I mean, this has just
been an absolute collapse by this baseball team of eparate proportions,
and it's been going on the entire year.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
What the hell's going on at T Mobile Park? Man? Yeah,
I mean it.
Speaker 5 (02:33):
I don't think we were all wrong and thinking this
was a World Series caliber team been Every expert in
baseball media picked the Mariners to win the division and
many picked them to get to the World Series and
to win it. So, yeah, it's and last night's game,
you know, I'm reluctant to call it the worst loss
of the season because there've been so many games you
(02:55):
could call the worst loss. But I would call it
the most disappointing loss because it was sort of that
it was supposed to be the jumping off point to
this new look Mariners. With the trade deadline passed and
Ward in the lineup and Donovan back, and it was
more of the same, just as meek and offense as
(03:15):
they've had for the last really all season, and so
and then the new reliever you get, you know, goes
in there and lays a huge egg just everything everything
went wrong. Instead of being the hope for a big turnaround,
it looks like more of the same, even though you know,
one game is just one game, but it was not.
(03:39):
I think it just cemented to a lot of people's
minds that things aren't going to be different.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
Well, Larry, let's go back to you said something there
in your response that that has me a little bit intrigued.
Maybe you can amplify on when you said, virtually every
baseball expert in the media had the Mariners winning the
division and you know, adder near going to the World Series,
et cetera. There's no question that that's true what you said,
(04:08):
But how much of the media experts are really looking
at how much of it is is looking at what
the other guy said or that, or just kind of
going with the flow on that I mean, or is
it just say, hey, we'll just take their aggregate or
their average OPS or something to the team based on
(04:28):
the back of their baseball cards, and because of that,
we'll say these guys are the favorites. I just wonder
the process because it seems like we have to open
ourselves up to Dave's question that maybe this team has
been overvalued in terms of what their potential is.
Speaker 5 (04:46):
Well, I think the predictions and the high hopes were
based on the fact that they they went to the
final two innings of the ALCS with a chance to
get to the World Series. Added a guy like Brendan Donovan,
who you know, has been a pretty much of a
disaster because he's been hurt, but on paper looked like
(05:07):
a huge addition to this lineup, and you and they
re signed Naylor, and it looked like the big three
of Naylor, Cal and Julio we're going to, you know,
be the type of uh, middle of the order bats
that can propel a team. With the starting rotation that
(05:29):
everybody knew was one of the best in baseballs, no
one could foresee cal Rawley's you know, epic epic fall.
And I was discussing with somebody, not only is it
the biggest one season collapse in baseball history, but I
have a hard time thinking of one in sports history,
from going from from sixty homers, you know, legendary season
(05:52):
to to being one of the worst players in baseball
this year. Who could foresee that?
Speaker 4 (05:55):
And Naylor, you know.
Speaker 5 (05:57):
No no pop whatsoever, no homer since June fourteenth, I think,
and just his slugging percentage is roughly JP Crawfords, which
is not what you want from him. And then Julio,
I think we saw it was going to be a
breakout season for him and it's been a huge disappointment
as well. So I think those factors were no one
(06:21):
could foresee those, and I think those have been the
biggest reason for the fact that they're not living up
to expectations.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Well, Larry Stones with us and Larry you know, I
mentioned this earlier. Twenty twenty three. You lead the American
League in ERA, you missed the playoffs. Twenty twenty four,
you lead Major League Baseball in ERA, have a ten
game lead at one point, you missed the playoffs. You
make it last year, and now you're lucky enough to
play in the worst division in baseball. In your four
games under five hundred, we really should be talking about
(06:50):
these guys potentially making the playoffs for the first time
ever in franchise history in four years in a row. Instead,
they're struggling to make it in consecutive years for the
first time in twenty five. So I believe that they
have been underperforming really in a lot of ways in
the last four years, and I wonder if they miss it,
does somebody pay the price for this?
Speaker 3 (07:11):
Honestly?
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Does does John Stanton have it in him to ask
Dan Wilson to step aside? Does he ask Jerry to
step aside so somebody else could maybe take this thing
to the next level, like Chris Peterson took over for
Steve Sarksian and took it to the next level at
you dub back in the day. How do you think
that Dynamic will look at the end of the year
if they missed the playoffs?
Speaker 5 (07:33):
First of all, if you go back to twenty two
when they did make the playoffs and broke the drought,
wouldn't it be five years in a row that they
are looking at.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Thank you, thank you very much.
Speaker 5 (07:42):
Yes, yeah, I think if they don't make the playoffs
this year, I think either. I find it hard to
believe that Dan will be back next year. Uh, you know,
if he wasn't Dan Wilson franchise icon, beloved guy that
(08:02):
everybody likes. I don't think that he would still be manager.
To be honest, this is a This is a sort
of situation that is the textbook case of a team
that needs a managerial change, or that leads to a
managerial change, a hyped team that is struggling so badly.
(08:22):
But I think I think they have a hard time
letting go Dan in the middle of the season, but
because there's still the hope that he could turn it
around like they did turn it around in the second
half last year. But if that doesn't happen, I think
the likelihood is either that Dan Dan would maybe resign
(08:43):
or they would let him go. As as far as Jerry,
you know, he's built a team that's one that's that's
five years in a row. They've had a winning record,
which this team is, this franchise has never done. They've
got a top five ranked farm system. You know, I
think he I think he could survive this. I think
(09:05):
the question is that I think the next manager should
be somebody with a lot more experience. The two managerial
hires that the photo has had have both been guys
who have not only never managed in the major leagues
but have never managed anywhere. In Scott Servis and Dan Wilson,
they were both complete managerial neo fights and I think
(09:28):
you need us. I think we've seen that, you go.
I think Scott developed into a really good manager, but
I think I think you need somebody with a little
bit more cachet at this point in this team's development.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
Yeah, and there's some names available. I mean, you know,
there's guys like Bruce Bochie out there. Obviously Alex Cora
is out there. I don't know what Boche's desire is
to manage again, you know, rock Old Bell Deli, Brian
Snitker with the former Braves manager. I guess I just
wonder Larry do, Jerry and John want a guy with
a strong personality that may go against the grain a
(10:06):
little bit regarding their philosophy on how to build and
how to perform and set a lineup on a daily
basis in baseball.
Speaker 5 (10:16):
Well, that's a valid, valid question, and based on the
two hires that I just talked about, I think they
are comfortable with with somebody who doesn't have that kind
of power. You know, you you bring in a guy
like Loo Panella, you know, back in the day, he's
not gonna he's not gonna stand for that sort of thing.
And a lot of those names that you mentioned. You know,
I'd add Buck Showalter as another guy who's out there
(10:38):
and there you go, and I think wants to manage again.
You know, I had maybe not be at their comfort level,
but I think it may be what they need to do,
and they may come around to that and we'll, you know,
we'll see how forceful and what influence Stanton has in
that regard. I mean, I was just looking at the
(11:01):
Fangraft playoff odds. They're still listed despite all this. It's
forty seven point five percent chance of making the playoffs.
So this could all be a moot point. I mean,
you look at the Botston Red Sox. The Red Sox
are twenty four and three since July third. I don't
think they're any more talented than the Mariners. I mean,
they they do have that kind of run in them,
(11:23):
but we've been waiting for it all year long and
it hasn't come close to happening. You know, there's there's
still time for it. Or yeah, I don't think it'll
have to be twenty four and three, But if they
suddenly run off nine out of twelve, they'll be in
pretty good playoff shape. So you know, they say still
because of the horrible division that you talked about and
(11:46):
the mediocre American League, they are not completely buried yet.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
No they're not. And Larry Stone with us. So you
mentioned obviously they're going to do this. Calihulio and Josh
are going to have to start playing to their potential.
But what about the acquisitions made at the deadline, Castillo,
the departure him, Just what was your reaction to what
the Mariners did here this week?
Speaker 5 (12:11):
I thought it was kind of a C plus trade deadline. Uh,
there was a there was a crying need for for
a leverage relief arm and they didn't get one. They
got Sir Anthony Dominguez, who could be a you know,
an okay piece. I'm not going to judge him by
by what happened last night. Uh, you know, guys have
bad games, you know, the difficult situation your first game,
(12:36):
and he's probably traveling and arrangements and all that. So,
but he's not He's not a late inning leverage arm,
eighth inning guy that they needed. Ward is a good
pick up, a right handed bat that they needed, but
his numbers are not good and in a team mobile park,
and we've just seen so many guys that they bring
(12:59):
in whose numbers look good, you know, on paper as
the right handed guy, and it just doesn't work out here.
From Solano to AJ Pollock to ref Snyder and Lastelle,
all those guys that we've you know, they just didn't
work out. So I think it's fair to be just
a little bit skeptical, But I do love his his
(13:20):
the fact he leads the league in walks and he's
got on base percentage over three eighty. That's what this
lineup needs. And with you you look at the lineup
they threw out there last night, and it should be
a really dynamic, good lineup with Donovan Back and Ward
and the three guys that we just talked about in
the middle, and Cole Young having a breakout year can Zone,
(13:41):
you know, it should be a good lineup. It's just
so frustrating to see him just have games, so many
games where they're just non competitive, you know, four hits,
five hits, one run, no runs, two runs. It's just
happening on an almost daily basis.
Speaker 1 (13:59):
And.
Speaker 5 (14:02):
Looking good on paper doesn't mean anything if you don't
do it on the field.
Speaker 2 (14:06):
Yeah, no doubt whether they're throwing the same line up
out tonight that they threw out last night, Larry, A
little bit surprising to me that among the three potential
swing guys in the outfield, Canzone a Rose Arena and
Ward a Rose Arena, to me is the worst offender.
But he's back out there again and left and Ward
is over there at d H tonight against the Tigers.
(14:29):
Does that surprise you that they're they're continuing to stick
with Randy a Rose Arena in left field versus maybe
giving him a spot to play DH and let Taylor
Ward go out there in left field.
Speaker 3 (14:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (14:41):
I think what they're ultimately going to do is put
Ward in right field, put Canzone at DH, and leave
Randy and left. I think the reason War isn't playing
yesterday and today in the field is because he hasn't
played right field much and he I think they want
to work him out there a little bit before they
stick them out there. But yeah, I mean that would
be the alternative. Then you've then you have can Zone
(15:06):
playing every day. I feel that gets the decision is
who's a better defensive outfield canzone or or a rose arena,
and I think they've decided it's they've decided it's a
rose arena because they're leaving him and left from everything
I've heard and Red well.
Speaker 2 (15:24):
They I mean, I mean, I don't know. That's blind
to me. I think he's terrible.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
I mean, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Maybe I'm missing something, man, Maybe I'm missing something. Somebody
texted us the other day and said Randy has expressed
that he doesn't want a d H and which I said,
who cares what he thinks?
Speaker 3 (15:38):
Somebody's terrible as a left fielder. So I don't know, man.
Speaker 2 (15:41):
They just need wins, and they need him bad starting
tonight because this Tigers team is right in front of them,
and they have waved the white flag, by the way,
as have the Orioles. Both of them have waived the
white flag. All right, Hey, we got a lot of
stuff that we got to get to, but we'll have
to wait till next week because we're up against the clock.

final thought from you, Hugh before we go into some

M's got slammed by the Tigers eight to nothing. Jerry

Depoto with some thoughts on the trade deadline and how
the Mariners have performed so far.
Speaker 7 (17:37):
I know it's gonna sound a certain to say this
is a tough roster, so prove you know, we have
not played well. We've we've underperformed our talent level. But
finding you know, upgrades from a player perspective in any
of these positions lead you bast best player probably the
one we have with the session being that we wanted to.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
Really ddit that both then when he knew we needed.
Speaker 7 (17:59):
To have to especially our b left but a right
hand hit or.
Speaker 1 (18:04):
Would be preferable.
Speaker 7 (18:06):
You know, we feel like with Taylor will work. We
got at least, if not the best right hand bat
that moved at this deadline, then certainly on the short
list and the best right hand bats, you know, a
lead on Bay skills. He's he's been a good performance
league over six years now. But hey, fitz Hard our
team quite well. Obviously an everyday player who can handle
(18:26):
both pretty particularly good against the lefties. And in the
Louis deal, we brought back Sir Anthony. The thing is
who has had you know, vast experience at leverage moments
and obviously certain perfections, but it's a big time batness
or who has pitched an important role in a lot
of offense. And with Carlos Marcus do back on the
(18:47):
near horizon of Matt Brash shortly thereafter, and we feel
like that combination makes us better. And you know, we
tried to stay in tune with other things that might help,
you know, make the team a little better, and unfortunately
we weren't able to push anything else across. But we
feel like the addition is particularly in the short term
of Taylor reward, you know, the return of Brendan Donovan,
the acquisition of Saranthony de Minguez. I think the lack
(19:11):
of trauma associated simply having a five man in rotation
is all a positive step hopefully gets smoothed in the
right direction.
Speaker 3 (19:18):

Speaker 2 (19:19):
I don't how much of that you caught, By the way,
it sounds like someone needs to turn down the trouble
by the way, on the old Kenwood receiver from the
nineteen seventies.
Speaker 3 (19:26):

Yeah, right, but clearly, you know, look honest about it,
we haven't played well, right, and they're hoping that the
bullpen guy's coming back can make a difference here when
it's all said and done. But that's gonna start tonight, man.
I mean, this is like, enough is enough. This is
why we get into these arguments on the air about Hey,
you know, who cares what happens in April and May.
It's all right, they're gonna be fine. They'll pull it

out in August. Julio can struggle because they'll do great
in the second half of the year. That's not happening, man.
So it drives me nuts when people have takes like
that that it's okay to suck out first because you'll
figure it out in the second half of the year. Well,
guess what, so far, it's almost the middle of August.
They haven't figured it out yet, Pal, So there's a
sense of urgency here man starting tonight.

Well, there has to be. I also starred on his
comments the lack of drama about the piggyback situation that
they well, that's obviously a concession that there was drama.
There's a lot of words he could have chose. He
chose drama to describe what the the piggyback situation had

been with which is now removed with the moving of castile.
But I don't know if you did that unwittingly or
what have you. But it's an acknowledgment by him that
drama that that is not that the uh, I guess
it's a noun, but that is not the way you
want to describe, you know, that that decision. And for

you know, every sing from Bill Krueger, every baseball guy
that we brought on this station, you know, has told
you you know, you've you're right there from the beginning,
you never liked it. Every guest you had that had
ever played, you know, a half an inning of baseball
said this is a bad idea. Now you've got the

president of the of the organization as saying that that
that period could be described as, at least in some
regard as drama. That's the word.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
Yeah, I mean it sounds like to me, he's regretting
that they did it, right. I mean, that's the way
I took that, that you know, it was a mistake,
and I mean, I just think it's just, you know,
if they missed the playoffs this year, this will be
remembered by some people as the piggyback here. Remember that
thing they did in twenty twenty six where they were,
you know, doing the piggyback and the six man rotation. So,
you know, just their lack of any real commitment to anything,

you know, going back and forth. One day they're doing this,
one day they're doing that. I thought it was a
clown show. And I've said that from the start, the
way this whole thing was handled. So I'm glad it's over.
But I'll tell you what's out over His Hard Knocks
just started last night.

You thought it was great, and the reaction has been
really good looking forward to episode number two and he
I'm just curious. I mean, everything we're seeing from Mike
McDonald is all positive, you know, and it's hard to
really be this confident in a guy. It's almost like
there's gotta be a wart somewhere, right, There's gotta be
something about this guy that maybe resembles a little bit

of an imperfection. Does he have bad skin? Does he
have a couple of hair is out of place? Is
he a slob at home when he go?

Is he does he not use shampoo the way that
you know some people do and just washes his hair
where the bar is soap?

Or is he really this perfect?

I mean, you know when when I studied, when they
first acquired him, you know what I said, My take
on him was right, Hello, right, I know you're looking
asking me. Yeah, you love the guy?

You love the guy? Yeaheah?

And sorry, yeah no, the uh I think.

The co said he was the best defensive mind on
planet Earth. That's what you said, so and I.

Help my breath when I said that. Okay, I'm gonna
step out on a limb here. Don't regret saying it.
You know, I call him Mozart because Mozart is undisputedly
the greatest musical mind for accomplishments under the age of
forty in the history of planet Earth. All right, right,
I mean, if if you need to dispute that, it's

not Michael Jackson's, it's not Paul McCartney, it's Mozart. And
you know, to me it looks like a seventeen year
old kid, so kind of a prodigy. So hints hints
the occasional reference and tongue and cheek calling him Mozart.
But if you made me gun to the temple, say
any concern, it would be only one of two things.

Number One, every single scheme in all of football ever,
the veer, the Ie formation, the spread, whatever it is,
the eighty five Chicago Bears, the Pete Carroll cover three,
every scheme that has ever been dominant, and the pre
eminent scheme on that side of the ball, They've all

been solved, right right, And so he he's going to
have to adapt. He's got he's got his scheme now,
but he's gonna have to evolve, and I think he's
smart enough to do that. And then the other potentially,
because again this is hard for me, because I I
freaking love the guy. I wouldn't trade him for one
coach in the NFL, not one, not Sean McVeigh, not

con nobody. But if there were to be, if I
were to draft a concern, it would sound something like,
he's such a good guy that in year one, the
players really respond to that kind of players coach, young
energetic players coach. But if the you know, over a

period of three or four years, five years, that would
the players would they start to to slack a little
bit because the whip isn't getting cracked enough?

Look, that I would be on flimsy ground. I wouldn't
feel solid about advancing that argument. But if you said
to me, are there any two things that can derail
this thing? That would be the direction I would go.
But like I said, man, I freaking I don't like
this coach. I love this coach. I love his style, right,

I love everything about it. I think you see it
in in Hard Knocks. So I'm about as bullish and
and big at Seahawk fan is as is damn near
I've ever been in my life. And and that goes
back from year one and seventy six.

But if that's if that's the biggest concern you've got,
I think we all feel pretty comfortable, right, because what
you're talking about take away those concerns that you've got

head coach, right, and nobody's perfect, right. I mean, those
concerns first of all, the concern about it we got
to break here, by the way. But the concern about
a guy not being able to adapt when offenses adapt,

that's a concern for every defensive minded head coach in
the NFL and every defensive coordinator in the NFL.

And how a guy does.

In year three, year four is more of a player's coach,
would be a concern for every player's coach that there's
it's ever come around the NFL.

situations and and versatil you know, we talked about versatility
in position and being able to play all over the field.
But for bullfing guys to be able to pitch in
different parts.

Of the football game is huge, and you know, good
quality innings anywhere we put him, and you know, I
think even found himself in some some pretty high leverage
situations at times, and so to get him back clearly
is huge.

And we're going, all right, well, there's a little bit
from Dan Wilson as we fade him out. By the way,
is that a microcosm of what's going to happen with
his job at some point on six and oh Brian
Wu six and oh with a two point two six
ERA at home against Drew Anderson, who, by the way,
is having a bit of a rough year. Four and

guy the last four years played four years total, two
years in Japan, two years in Korea, and now he's
back in the States. The M's have won six in

they need him to be big time tonight.
