We're the Seattle Rain coming off of a zero zero
draw against Houston last week, are back here at home
at Luminfield, on the beautiful grass here at Lumen and
are getting ready to face off against an absolute powerhouse
in NWSL, Washington's Spirit and a name that many people know,

Trindy Rodman, one of the best players, maybe the best
young player in this entire league. It will be a
challenge today for the Seattle Rain, who are still missing,
of course, the large absence of Jess Fishlock, who has
heard a couple weeks ago in that Utah game, and
the Seattle Rain will look to score for their first
time in a few games and get a win today

here at Louman. Happy Mother's Day, everybody. Welcome into the
broadcast booth. Jackson Felts alongside Stephanie Verjoya. We have kwame
Apia down on the sideline with our broadcast today. We're
counting you down to kickoff for the next twenty minutes
and then it will be Rain and Spirit kicking off
here underneath it's a little bit cloudy skies, but a nice, warm,
mostly sunny day here in Seattle. Stephanie, it should be

a very pleasant afternoon for soccer and a very challenging
game for the rain.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
Yes, yeah, good good weather today, but a good hard
atmosphere for the rain to come back into. And you know,
kind of the opposite, not the opposite from when they
played Houston. Houston, it was terrible weather, as we'll talk
a little bit more about, with some heavy rain there
and a slightly easier opponent just based on where the
standings are at. But they're coming off that game into
a perfect spot, I think, to challenge.

Where they're at.

And like you said, it's a gorgeous day to be
at lumin Yeah, much.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
More gorgeous than what was in Houston. Let's talk about that, Stephanie,
because we were talking with our head coach Laura Harvey,
who said it was absolutely quote miserable. She was freezing
because she dressed for Houston. And when you think, you
especially in the month of May, you think, all right,
it's going to be very warm temperatures, you might have

some rain, but you know, do squalls come through and
you know you're right down there next to the golf
that'll be in and out in twenty minutes. No, it
was a torrential down for Stephanie for the entire game.
I was making the joke off the air that I
think that was a game where I looked at it
when I started watching it the first two minutes. If
you were to turn off and say, all right, Jackson,

(02:25):
what's gonna be the final score, I'd probably say zero zero?
And it ended zero zero.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
Yeah, it's a really tough weather to play through. And
I'm sure Seattle lights are laughing a little bit right
on this rain. We should be used to the rain.
This is not Seattle rain. This is not Seattle rain, folks.
I mean it. It was heavy. It was thick rain.
They could barely see each other. It slows the ball down,
it makes the ball skip, It makes everything feel difficult,
like you're run almost raining against the wind or whatnot.

(02:52):
And when it clouds the player's vision, keepers players when
they're trying to pick their head up and find good passes,
it is really tough to lay through and that can
impact the team mentally. And like you said, it was
just going to be a slog one that you almost
wish would have turned into like a three to three game,
right I at least some goals in there. But both
teams did well, had some good defensive moments. One thing
Laura mentioned was, you know, the team's ability to kind

of stay in that match, even through the weather, through
that long, long, hard battle.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
So and I think in one of those games that
does end zero zero and you're playing in such weird
conditions end be here, but very intense conditions that that
was in. And again, I think you bring up a
good point that seattleites. You're listening, you're saying, what it's
just a little ring. Now, we're talking about the hardest
rain we've experienced here in maybe the last decade. That's
what happened in Houston last Friday. And I'm kind of

wondering because this is clearly an offense, Stephanie, that has
not scored in three games. It's been three hundred some
odd minutes since this team has put a ball in
the back of the net, obviously missing Jeff Fishlock. But
how much do you read into that game considering the
conditions When we talk about the state of the offense
right now.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
I mean, I think it's something helpful that puts a
little asterisk next to that feeling that the players have
that we haven't scored in three games, because let me
tell you, there is nothing that really damps down the
vibes in a locker room as oh my goodness, we
are having a very hard time scoring. We're not losing
close games, or I mean even if these are draws,
I mean, it does not feel good to not be

(04:22):
able to score. And so I think the fact that
there was a major weather element helps them say we
created chances. And you heard Laura Harvey say that multiple
times we were creating chances. We would be worried if
we weren't creating chances. But we are creating chances, and
as long as we're doing that, then the focus is
we just need to finish them. And that's different. But
that is a major focus for today.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
And I think that's an important point when we talk
about the attack. We're going to continue probably talking about
it until we see a ball going in the back
of the net. Is the confidence in the offense right now?
Because Laura Harvey's only made one change to her starting eleven,
and let's give you that starting eleven for the Ceaattle
Rain today. It's gonna be Claudia Dickey as usual in
goal for the Rain back forth, Sophia Horta on the

right side, Emily Mason and Phebe mclernan will be your
center backs. Madison Curry will be your left back. Maddie Donleen, Ainsy, McCammon,
Sam Mezza are going to be the those holding midfielders
in the attacking threesome of Mattie Mercado, me Official and
Coco Montasere. And there's only one change, Stephanie from the
eleven in Houston, that being Coco Monassere coming on for

Amria Damas. And I think that shows you the confidence
that Laura Harvey has in her team right now.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
Absolutely, and I know that they feel that as well.
I mean, Laura Harvey is one of those coaches that
you know, we've talked about it before. Players love playing
for her. They feel they're the most confident people have
talked about her. Emma Hayes the last time we were
on this broadcast talked about how the players in Seattle
Rain are developing particularly well. I mean, Laura Harvey is
one of those coaches that people turn to and say
she develops players. And so what we are seeing in

(05:54):
this lineup as a consistency, a back line that has
played together with a goalkeeper that is on the verge
of breaking some rays maybe, and an attacking line that
has created chances. And she needs them to get more
in touch with each other. And that that's what she's
hoping to see. She doesn't want to disrupt, she doesn't
want to add in a ton of new things. She
wants to make sure that this group can find their best,

(06:15):
you know, togetherness in these next couple games.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Well, you mentioned those marks coming up, and then that
is an important point to hit. I enjoyed the section
of Rain Weekly with Kie Dunning early this week where
she and Kwame and Laura had had a great kind
of section where they talked about the many marks and
two massive ones coming today. First with Laura Harvey. Today
is her three hundredth NWSL match coach to cross all competitions.

(06:40):
This is number two hundred and fifty two for the
Rain forty eight for Utah as well, and she had
that stint with the Royals, but number three hundred across
all comms in NWSL for Laura Harvey today. And then
you mentioned Claudia Dicky. She's three saves away from two
hundred in her career with the Rain. That will put
her if she gets it today, the thirteenth in NWSL

history with two hundred saves. And when we talk about
that defense, Steph, it's one of those things where Laura
Harvey is so happy with the way that they're defending
right now. She said, we just need to be more
ruthless in front of goal. But the way that where
it's a Mace and mcclernan Curry are defending right now,
they are near the top of the league in goals
conceded and they just need more of that today against

a great attack. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:25):
Absolutely, And like you said, she's showing her confidence by
continuing to put them in the game. And again, the
last time we were here in Lumenfield April twenty six
against the Royals, the Rain had a really tough game.
They lost three to zero. And one of the focuses
of that game that we said is the back line
is giving away the ball. But when the back line
gives away the ball offensively when they have possession of
the ball, that is a different problem than the back

(07:46):
line stopping shots. You know, slide tackling, preventing things from
going in the back of the net, just purely by
those defensive tactics. And that's one thing that she said
she continues to see from this back line is they
do not give up give up much. Right, so maybe
they're giving the ball away, but once they do give
it away, they actually are an incredibly strong back line
and prevent hard, you know, things from happening multiple times

in the game. And so she wants to see that continue,
she says, against the team like the Washington spirit, It's
never been more important for it to continue.

Speaker 2 (08:15):
I mean, this is a Washington team. We'll take a
break and we'll come back and talk about him. This
is a absolute dangerous powerhouse. They finished last year in
NWSL number two in the regular season, they made the championship.
They lost on a late goal in the championship, a
late goal scored by our old friend Rose Level, who
ended up beating Washington in the title game. It's very

fair to say that Washington is, if not the best
team in this entire league, certainly one of the top
two teams in this entire league.

The standings have them at third, but they are talented
pretty much at every single spot on the field. So

A Happy Mother's Day to everybody. Let's dive into the

Jordan bug is still out with a leg injury. She
had a leg injury in February. In March, this is

Fishlock just a couple weeks ago the rain, We're playing Utah.
In the second half of that game, she went down
with a major lower leg injury. She is out. The
X rays were negative. There is hope that she will

World Cup break, but Jess Fishlock is out, and you know,

I think Stephanie, the big question is how do you
fill those massive shoes in that number ten spot.

Yeah, and I think what the answer is is you
make the midfield more balanced to the strengths of the
other players that you have left. So Fishlock's one of
those rare players, those rare midfielders, we call them the ten,
that offensive midplayer. It's what Messi plays, It's what you know,
Lindsay Herran plays. Are you Now she shift a little lower,
But those players get a lot of the action because
they're the player that starts the attack and the most

(13:50):
creative best on the ball. Technically, she anchored the midfield
and so she drew a lot of attention to herself
and she could kind of have some side side players
give her some assistance. Now instead we're gonna see Ainsley, McCammon,
Mezza and Dallien have to take on bigger roles in there.
What that means is Ainsley's probably gonna drop in a
little bit lower. She'll help the back line build out

(14:12):
in their play, and Mezsa's gonna be allowed to go
further forward, potentially having more freedom, more space on the ball,
and we'll see their shape change a little bit. Rather
than a really kind of flat across with Fishlock pushing
high in that three, we might see a triangle. We
might see them rotating more more balance, more balance, more balance.

Speaker 2 (14:29):
And I wonder if that eventually shifts, if if Mcammon
does drop and creates sort of almost like a back five,
you have Mesa dominating the middle of the park. We
know Maddie'll get up next to Mercado, next Official, next
to Coco. It might end up looking almost like a
five to one four at times. And you wonder if
if Laura Harvey, if that's what she's gonna go for today,
pretty much just emptying the middle of the park, if

(14:50):
that's kind of what this thing ends up looking like.
That shifts into the conversation Stephanie about this Washington team.
That is, as we mentioned the previous segment, maybe the
best one of certainly the best in this entire league.
They got a trio of Rebecca Bernald, Lacey Santos, hal
hersch Felt in the middle of the park where if
they are given space, then that could be a lot

(15:11):
of possession and a lot of dangerous opportunities for Washington.

Speaker 3 (15:15):
Absolutely, and like you said, part of the reason why
Laura Harvey's playing we called it a chess match before
this game. Why she's doing that is because this is
a team that is well balanced across the board, so
strong defensive back line, really creative midfielders, and just really
powerful forwards in Rodman and Cantore. So I think what
she's trying to do is say, okay, fine, here, you
can have the middle. We are not going to give

(15:35):
you anything outside wide. We're gonna match you on the
with We're gonna have where to match you on the with,
and then also be that extra attacking threat for us.
She's gonna push up. So if you don't track back Rodman,
if you don't come back was wasssie, then fine, we're
gonna take advantage of that. So it's a little bit
of this who's gonna blink first? Are we gonna be
more aggressive? Are we gonna win the ball in their
half or are they gonna punish us for trying to

(15:57):
build in that half a little too high?

Speaker 2 (15:58):
This could end up creating a very fluid, transitional, exciting
soccer match, because you're right, I mean, and we will
have plenty of time to talk a lot about the
greatness of Trinity Rodman. I mean, I'm sure that soccer
fans everywhere. There was a new World Cup commercial that
came out earlier this week had Timothy Shallome was in there,
and it was a whole big thing. And Trinity Rodman

(16:21):
is one of the big stars of this commercial. She
is a superstar in the women's game. We're gonna have
plenty of time to talk about her. But the part
of this game is that Kuassia is one winger, Rodman
is the other winger. They don't do a lot of
defensive work and Stephanie, if we can overload those sides,
You're right, that is where the rain can get in
this game. And God, wouldn't it be great to see

a goal in the first twenty minutes of this game.

Absolutely, And I think we mentioned it before, but that
is one of the major keys to this game is
them not only being able to match. The Washington Spirits energy.
They really need a goal. They really need a goal.
It's been a couple of games since they've had one.
And they not only need a goal, they need one early.
Because this Washington team, they're going to stay in the match.
They're gonna slowly chip away.

Like we said, every single line they have strength and
so do the Rain. But the Rain right now they
need a little bit of an extra confidence. They need
to see me official crush across from Whereto. That's what

it out. And you're right, it was a great point
that Washington's gonna be there throughout this entire game. They
have a winger Claudia Martinez, an eighteen year old from

to be a dangerous player there on that wing. Well,

versus Washington Spirit in this NWSSEL game setting the stage

for every stand right now. Obviously, the Seattle Rain have
had a scoreless draws. We mentioned against Houston last week.
That game is zero zero overall this season. Right now,
the Rain sitting in sixth place right now in NWSL
at three two and two with eleven points, Gotham just
ahead of them at fourteen, Houston right below them at

ten points, and in the Washington Spirit they are at
Powerhouse four one in three right now in third place.
But they are coming off of four straight wins. They
open the season with a loss of Portland and then
from then on they have been unbeaten and in these
last four wins three of them were shutouts. They've scored
fourteen goals in their last four wins. They are quite powerful. Stephanie,

what are your keys to this match here today?

Yeah, so come on right out that they need to score.
The Rain need to score in the first twenty minutes.
Like we said, they need to get on the board,
and they need to make sure that they start changing
the rhythm of this game. And that's going to happen
by crossing and finishing. As Laura Harvey pointed out earlier
this week, that's one of their major strengths. They need
to get me official Maddie Mercado in the eighteen yard box,
finding some chances, and Laura Harrvey specifically said, they need

to draw Washington spirit out of their blocks. They need
to make them uncomfortable. So in these first twenty minutes,
we'll know they're doing their job if they're making them uncomfortable.
And additionally, she wants them to make them uncomfortable defensively
by putting the pressure on. So we're not only looking
for an early goal, we're looking to disrupt them in
their defensive half, which means that Morgan, one of their

very very talented center backs, can't get on the ball,
evade pressure and then find some balls into the rains backline.

For the Rain today they are in their blue search kits,

the center back directing play, but she is their anchor

in the player's body language. They do look loose, They
do look confident. They seem like a completely different team

was scared. They were a little ridge, They didn't seem
very creative. I feel like we have some good signs

that they're feeling their most confident that they felt.

Yeah, this is quite a good start here for Seattle,
but you just got to keep the pressure on Washington
right now. Has done a good job in about the
last sixty seconds of keeping possession, just earning a couple
throw ins, earning a foul, and trying to really establish
something and turn the first seven minutes of this game around.
And they'll have to retreat, but they will keep possession

in the middle of the park. Does Washington now advancing
numbers forward? Advancing a lot of numbers forward. There's a
ball crossing over to the left side. It will stay
with Washington. With Kuassie Colossie pulled down, that's going to
be a foul right on the edge of the box

box and This is a keeper's worst nightmare because it's
a really hard angle. This player can whip it back
post if she's left butted, she can really nail it
front post, low and on the ground around the wall,
or she can float something to the back post for
those players running on and kind of we call it
that half space in between where the keeper is in

the back line, and so this is really hard for
the keeper to adjust to.

What's coming right here is going to be Lacey Santos,
who has fifty eight games with the Colombian national team,
previously had one hundred games with Atletico Madrid. Broke onto
the scene last year with the Washington Spirit, has three
goals and assist so far this year. She will take

dribbles up, takes a shot and it goes off right

We love a wall that does its job. I'm sure

really they were able to just lock down that near post,

set for an extra single second. That is good because
it feels like Washington's confidence is certainly growing here in
the twelfth minute in this serial zero game so far,
Washington throws it in, but they cannot control it well

exact same place where to we'll have the opportunity to
throw this in. We'll go along here to mcammon. The
McCammon turns it away. Washington now in possession. If they
turn it right back over Dallen, we'll clear it far.

I'm seeing where Washington does feel like they've taken the
last few minutes to really get comfortable in this game,
and these are the moments where you just want to
make sure that you take away any confidence, any momentum,

Yeah, that's true, and that's why Laura Harvey said she.
I mean, the focus for Laura Harvey is all in
the attacking half for Rain offensively and defensively. She doesn't
want them to get comfortable in Washington Spirit's final third,
because that is where they feel the most comfortable. So
keep their ball on the back line, keep them high
and oppressed with Seattle Rains forwards going at them, and

there they're bound to make mistakes. But if you let
them swing this ball side to side, let Trinity Rodman,
Guassi do what they want on the ball, you're going
to feel the threats that they have, which is across
the board on that front line.

Speaker 2 (36:32):
Yeah, we haven't really called Rodman's name yet. There was
that big spell of possession. A lot of it came
on the right side with Kuassi didn't really go over
to the left side too offully much fortunity Rodman, and
we will probably eventually mention her name a lot today.

tension here of Plane aggressively Plaine high pressure and not
allowing the Spirit to get these dead balls and restart
possession and where they want to with the rhythm. So
Seattle needs to find the balance of high pressure without
that kind of last edge of creating a foul.

There's a ball over to Rodman here on this left side,
but not a good first touch, and she'll have to
retreat a little bit and use that back line. Trinity
Rodman in case that name sounds familiar, She's obviously been
a very let's say, not so vocal, but she's been
out there in the public eye and commercials and in
lots of other places. She's one of the best young
players in this entire league. Last week, she became the

youngest player in NWSL history to have thirty goals and
twenty assists. She had a goal and two assists in
their fort to two win over Orlando. She has three
goals and three assists so far this year, averaging nearly
a gold contribution every ninety minutes. She is a very

talented person. May also recognize the name. She's the daughter
of NBA legend Dennis Rodman, although she said in an
interview Dennis Rodman is not a dad. Quote maybe by blood,
but nothing else. But she is a street extremely talented
soccer player, and we expect for the corner coming for
Lacy Santos in the southeast corner of Luminfield that she's

going to make her presence known today. Santos will be
over this ball alongside that post, raises her left hand.
It'll be an in swinger here. It comes into the box,
it's low. It's a chance to clear that away and

Seattle been certainly the brightest spot of the entire team
so far. They're near the top of the league in
goals conceded and for a team that has definitely now
coming off of the absence of Lou Barnes, I think
we're seeing a back line that hasn't missed a beat

and they are certainly the big strength of this team
for Laura Harvey.

They are, and they have a great balance with with Stevie,
mcfernon and Mason back there in the center backs. They're
so solid, they're strong, they do a great emergency defending,
but then where to encourgy on these wide fullback positions.
They love to get forward, they create some offense, and
so it's a really good mix. Sometimes you have a
back line that likes to stay like Washington Spirits, they don't.
They don't put their fullbacks too high and so they

kind of stay in that low box. But Seattle has both.
They have the emergency defending that mclarnem provides, and they
have some that attacking power that Quaerten curate provide.

Speaker 2 (42:09):
That defending ability will be certainly needed today against a
very potent to Washington. Attack Washington with a throw in
on the far side, middle of the park. Let's throw
it down onto the sideline with Kwame.

Yeah, Washington's attack is just fluid.

As Stephanie said that, there's attacking points on all three
sides here. You have assists, you have goals. Trinity's definitely
want to focus on. She's got three assists and three
goals on the season, so go contribution almost every game.
And I think that Seattle's approaching it in the right way.
They're stopping the feeding from the middle. The biggest thing
that you want to do as a defensive team going
against a high attacking team is you.

Want to stop them from getting the ball.

Frustrate them early and make sure that they're just they're
asking for the ball. You want to build that frustration.
So that's what I think is happening here. I think
we're definitely shutting down Trinity. She's not getting the ball
to her feet. What's your net? Then seeing her switch
from you know, winger to forward to winger to ford
any attempt to get the ball at her feet. So
I think we're handling it the right way.

I think that's exactly right Kwamie and limiting a player
like her getting the service.

It was interesting talking to.

Laura Harvey about how Trindy Rodman is this great direct runner,
great eye for goal, but Washington players around her really

the box. That was the first real dangerous moment and

cross there by Trindy Rodman, but nobody was home there
in the box, and Seattle will control. Here is on

in that middle third, that's where we're missing Fishlocks. She's
getting up higher and wider actually, so she's not staying
as much in the middle where Mesa and Ainsley are
mostly staying to retain the ball. She's kind of floating out.
It's almost looking more like a traditional four three three
with her a little bit higher and wider, and so
it adds some balance that the rain, you know, not

that they didn't have it before, but it's different from
when Fishlock was in there and created such a strong
presence a high in the middle.

Well in that high press we are seeing right now,
Seattle forces a Washington turnover. They will have a throw
in here coming from Madison. Curry on this near side
the left as a big press moment for Seattle, creates
that turnover throw and comes to me official. Official has
help ball into Mercado, cleared away by Washington, but only
cleared away to create another throw in from Seattle from

that same spot a moment ago. You know, we'll be
Curry again to throw this ball in Seattle's left back
up the field, throws in long to me official who
tries to head it on into a Washington defender, clearing
that away and Washington maintained possession, they will earn a foul.

or maybe that was another one of those Washington players
in the bright, bright yellow jerseys. But it will be
a free kick for Washington inside their own half. But
the press will stay as the official will stay up
rushing their keeper. Right now, but a lot of players

Yeah, and again, some more fouls continue to come, and
I actually think there's been a few times where the
Washington players have gone down a little easy, And you
want to be careful because when the ref starts to
get in a mentality where she thinks that the players
are continually pushing too hard on the Rain side of things,
then you get those easy calls, and so you know,
the Rain can only do what they can do. You know,
the Washington falls and gets the call, that's credit to them.

But you know, I guess we're seeing that a little bit.

Both sides exactly as we see it. One right there,
the Madison Curry tries to get around and defender and
draws a foul. But it's interesting, a lot of these
fouls are kind of showing the tone of this game
where it could be a little more of a physical game.
There'll and a referee, Jack Lment's play seing them, letting
them play so far, and you wonder nothing's been yellow
card worthy yet. But the question of what is yellow

card worthy is going to be an interesting one. As
a collision here in the middle of the park, Curry
does well to win that ball for Seattle, and the
Rain will have possession here in their own side of

the Rain and Washington Spirit. Claudia Dickie not much to

you know you're doing the right thing.

she has more space at her feet because we didn't

one of those players that you can't really forget about,

So here's Seattle working towards the middle of the park.
Here's McCammon. McCammon did a great job by Kuwassie to
come back and defend for Washington. They will take this
ball away. It's been a lot of back and forth,
really high level midfield play by both of these teams.
We really talked in the pregame show about getting me official,
Seattle's forward getting going, but both of these midfields have

done a great job not to let anything get too
dangerous to each of their forwards. Ken Torre for Washington
completely absent so far.

Well, yeah, definitely, And what's hard as I do think
if the game stays this way, it ends up benefiting
the Spirit in the long run. And the reason why
is because they do have those multiple attacking threats that
will continue to stay dangerous even if they're not possessing
super well, even if if they're coming back to get
the ball. Trinity Rodman could take this game on her
shoulders and run with it. We've seen her Cantore do

that in other games. And so what the Rain again
need to do is they need to continue to press
them until they're too three goals up. I mean, that's
the reality.

Yeah, we talked about that earlier on as well. There's
a lot of players for Washington who can be both
on the field now and come off the bench. It's
a make life difficult for Seattle. But right now is
this rain back line and midfield doing their job. And
but here is a giveaway. MESI gives it away, chance
for a shot for Rodman and we'll go just high

and wide, but picking it up very quickly shot from
distance there. That's a moment for Washington that it felt
like they had the numbers. It was about a four
on three there after the giveaway for Mezza and Stephanie,
I feel like Tredney Rodman is gonna be wishing she
had that one back. They played it too quick.

Yeah, she's definitely gonna want that one back. She just
picks off an easy pass top of the eighteen, really

they have three shutout wins. They got a four to
two win last week over Orlando, and they have a
superstar in Trinity Rodman, who has been very, very frustrated
throughout this first half, Stephanie, I think that's one of
the big takeaways is the job that our defenders and
midfielders are doing to eliminate pretty much every offensive threat

that Washington has. Oh, we'll get to Mike turned up
here in just a moment, but the idea that this
is a very, very threatening Washington team that this Seattle
team has done well to stop here in this first half.

Think we are continuing the conversation from the offensive end.
We just need to see that chance creation that has
been evident for Seattle throughout this throughout the game so
far this season. We just need to see more of

like we said, you have to see it across the board.
It can't just be the back line shutting down Trinity Rodman.
It has to be the midfielders, it has to be
the attackers. And so you know, the back line gets
its credit for making this really difficult for the Aushington Spirit,

official is up there putting pressure on their back line.
Laura har Be called out Morgan, one of the members
of the back line for the Spirit as actually the
the Washington Spirit's key, the trigger to their attack. And
so yes, Trinity Rodman, her name gets said a lot,
and she is a very very dangerous attacking player. But
what the Rain have done is they've slowly kind of
suffocated the Spirit and their ability to dictate how they

want their attack to start. And so when you do that,
when you stop letting them dictate the game, you control
the rhythm, you're allowed to create your time on the ball,
and you're able to be more creative. And we're seeing
that with Wuerto, with Coco's so it's so excellent to
see them not only shutting this team down but also
having their moment in the attacking half.

What do you think, Yeah, that looks like a really
really rough one to not give her a call. I mean,
she was coming across her body. It looked like she
was explicitly tripped up, and you know, I think that's

Feltz as the referee throughout this game, it seems like
she has called that. So that's where you start to
get in the sticky positions where we need consistency. So

if we're going to call that on one side earlier
in the first half, that's a foul. And especially when
a player's coming horizontally across their body like that, it
was it was a tough note call because especially what
happens next. Every player for the ring was in that
eighteen yard box, so you only had Phoebe and Mason
back and they really broke out quickly the spirit from that.
So that was a very dangerous no call as well,

get your opening thoughts here in the postgame show on
the loss, and there's a lot of different things I
want to pick your brain on coming out of it,
but first your opening thoughts.

Yeah, opening thoughts is just it's it's really a brutal,
heartbreaking way to lose a game. Anyone that's played soccer
or you know, any sport, but soccer especially has these
momentum shifts in the game and when it comes down
to something like that, it's really tough. I think, you know. Overall,
opening thoughts, the Rain played a very solid game front
to back and they should be proud of that, and
they have things that they can move forward with. And

then the reality is the Spirit is a force to
be reckoned with.

Yeah, they certainly are. And of course a lot of
Washington fans will be eagerly waiting the award on Trinity Rodman,
who went out due to a lower leg injury earlier
in this game. She being a star star player in
this league and certainly won for the United States national team,
and she was hurt there in the second half. So

we'll see what her status is. But I think, you know, Stephanie,
I think you're absolutely right that Seattle was the better
team overall in this game. And it is one of
those things where that's sports for you. The goal that
Washington scored, you know, it's one of those where I
just remember the build up for Washington came out of
passes that barely connected. They barely made it through the

middle of the park and one inch, honestly one inch
a ball can get clipped tipped away and it doesn't
break out on that right side, it does and the
cross comes in and it's a goal. What did you
see overall on that play?

Yeah, you know exactly what you said. No one really
owned the middle of the park today, and so the
ball kind of made its way through. And then what
they did do is they were able to get an
extra full back up and high and add some numbers
to a side where as we said, Seattle was pushing
some numbers high they were trying to get their own
full back side, so they were able to whip the
ball in with a more precision than I saw the Rain,

you know, on the other side, able to find someone
in the box whipped that ball in. But you know,
at the end of the day, it was just that
quick movement from Martinez to slip past where To and
get it in. So it wasn't like, you know, the
brand of Washington Spirit soccer. It wasn't something they'd been
building and working towards all game. It really fell almost
out of nowhere.

That's a great point that I've watched a lot of
Washington Spirit Soccer in the last week getting ready for
this game. I don't think I've seen a single goal
they've scored like that. That is so unlike Washington to
get a goal like that. But it's it is the
move that Martinez makes on where To getting around here.
It's very indicative of the play that Coco Mondasy had
on that cross that came in to get around herd

defender head the ball in. And that was the biggest
moment for the Rain offensively, that chance there in the

I think it could be Emery Adamis. I mean, they
have players that are just so electric, like we said,
on the field, and the hard part is right now

we saw have multiple shots that just kind of trickled

in and so you know, if they spent the whole
week doing some doing some finishing, I wouldn't be mad
