World Cup break is here and the Sounders go into
the long two month break, not the way they wanted to.
Back to back shutout losses to Los Angeles teams. Last
week it was two nothing at home to the Galaxy,
and then tonight down in Los Angeles against LAFC at
BMO Stadium, the Sounders fall by a score of one

to nothing. We welcome you into the post game show
Jackson Felts alongside Kwame Apaya, as we are going to
be breaking down this one and nothing loss for the
next half hour. Let's start where this game was decided.
Kwame in the eighty sixth minute, Tyler Boyd gets some
space there on the right side, he crosses it to
(01:18):
the far post and Tillman puts it in the back
of the net. His brother's off the World Cup and
he's scoring for LAFC to give them that one nothing goal.
Let's start there and talk to me about what you
saw on that play in that goal for LAFC.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
You know, in a tight game like that, it comes
to just moments where you might accidentally turn off for
just this second. I feel like Seattle was applying so
much pressure that in that moment it just became, you know,
a quick glimpse of just losing a little bit of attention.
We saw the ball go down the right side, knew
who had a slight bit of a moment just not
covering early enough, not getting to the attacker early enough,
(01:57):
and we had a cross right into the box. And
then obviously he had a play who was coming from
behind someone, which is really difficult to mark as a
defender because typically you're just looking at the ball. Your
goal is to get to it. But if someone's behind
you and sees that ball and is aggressive enough, they're
gonna get to it first. And so just a bit
of a turnoff moment from both far outside backs. Yeah,
(02:17):
gets it gets a little tough.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Yeah, Kilanie is certainly caught ball watching there on that
far post as Tilman just gets right by him and
gets his position. And you can watch the replay and
and you know, are what we're watching on the video
here from Apple TV. They have this great goal cam
and as you look at the goal cam, Kilanie, you
just it's it's the deer in the headlights. Look of
(02:40):
oh god, Timothy, he was he already has position, he's
already running, He's got the spot.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
The ball's coming.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
I'm too late, and Kilanie sees it coming and it
is too late, I think, Kwame. We have to spend
a good amount of time talking about the lack of offense,
and you know, we spend some time in pregame talking
about it, saying, listen, seventeen goals in twelve games is
not good enough on any level. We need more offensive production.
(03:07):
This team has not been enough attack minded. We haven't
been good enough in the offensive part of the field,
and we need more. It's an LAFC team that is
also very good defensively. Seventeen goals given up in fourteen
games going in now seventeen goals given up in fifteen
games total, they're tremendous. Even without their starting goalkeeper, hugilaris
(03:27):
still a good defense. But again, Seattle just not enough offensively.
And there's a lot of levels kwame we can talk
about this. We'll just start with the overall view from
thirty five thousand feet in this game getting shut out.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Yeah, you know, it was a game of just trying
to force the ball. I think we both had moments
where we actually wanted Seattle to try to force the
ball just a little bit more. Right, There was just
it felt like they were on their heels defensively and offensively.
At times. We saw the ball get into great positions
to actually put a player through, whereas we would just
(04:03):
consistently play the ball back. It just felt like we
were playing the ball back every opportunity that we could.
It was a very flat game, and we hope to
see a little bit more attack mindedness from such an
attacking you know side. You know, you have a great
forward and Jordan Morris, you got Us Ferro on the
right side. You've got Paul Rothrock on the left, all
(04:23):
pacy quick, you know, attack minded players. But you just
didn't see the ball get to them in attacking positions.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Just didn't feel like they were pushing right. They didn't
feel like they were pushing up. And when they tried
to get going on the wings, LAFC quickly shut them down.
When they tried to go through the middle, it worked,
but those lanes weren't always open, and it just felt
like I think you used the word flat right there,
and I felt flat against the Galaxy, and the offense
felt flat again here, like there just wasn't enough push
(04:50):
from those guys.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
Yeah, and then you have the those opportunities that you
have to capitalize on when you do get them. You know,
I'm trying to remember exactly if it was.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
There's a lot, and I can go through it here.
Thirtieth minute you have to throw ball to Jordan Morris.
That one is saved by Hassle. But then the one
you're talking about Rusnak you just mentioned it there forty
seventh minutes where right after the halftime wastele you get positioned.
I think it's a transition moment and even Hassle is
taken out.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
Of his goal. Yeah, and what a moment that could
have been.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Yeah, you know, you're on your favorite left foot there,
I see it. It makes sense. But you have two
other players in the box right, you have a defender
and a goalie completely taken up, completely consumed by your movement.
What you do there is you give it to a
player in a better position.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
We saw a.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
Player at the top of the key right waiting for
a layoff, so you can just get a direct shot
on goal, no goalie in net, and then you just
have Rusnak, I think, just drifting a little bit further.
And it's tough because in your mind, your thoughts are, hey,
I want to get myself into a better position to
shoot this ball. But at the angle that you're going,
all you're doing is hurting your ability to actually score,
(05:56):
and so you might as well give it to somebody
in a better position.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Yeah, Because Rusnak turns to his right on his left foot,
he's clearly looking at goal and he's saying, can I
shoot this from this angle on my left foot? But
if he turns the other way, then suddenly he has
those guys he can lay the ball off to. And
what an opportunity there that was in the forty seventh minute,
you know, And then across happens a moment Reagan gets down,
(06:21):
he gets back up, can't put it in the back
of the net.
Speaker 4 (06:24):
We have sixty ninth minute.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
Snyder Burnell comes on six minutes earlier, and then he
comes in the sixty ninth minute, has a great shot
from the top of the box that forces to save
We see Danny Mazoski come on in the sixty ninth minute.
That was kind of an interesting shift, Kwame, because we
were in that second half, in the middle of the
second half, Sounders had a pretty good twenty minute stretch
and we were saying, all right, you need to make
(06:46):
a shift, maybe perhaps a tactical shift to get this
attack going to lose that flatness, to get more, you know,
going with the with the offense. And it was a
simple Mazofski for Rothrock, which sent him to the top,
Jordan Morris to the wing. And you and I kind
of both said it felt like there could have been
a formation change here, whether it be take Klannie off
(07:07):
and put a forward on, and you could have had
some sort of change in a sort of a sort
of like Forfe shift, but a shift that keeps you
in the same format of the four two three one.
I don't think either of us felt like that was enough.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Yeah, it was interesting. We talked a lot about how
to create more of an attacking minded like playset and
a type of minded you know, position and angle and formation,
and it really felt like putting more numbers up top
would have made a bit more sense. Honestly, we kind
of we flattened out the midfield, right. We took away
(07:41):
the depth of the midfield with the thought that hey,
if we can make sure we're always winning that ball
at the line of interception, then where we have options
forward And we did talk about, hey, if we can
get to a player up top with Jordan Morris to help,
it makes sense here we could do something with it.
But once that actually happened, I don't know if we
were able to capitalize as much as possible. Now, we
(08:02):
did see a great run from Jordan Morris down the
left side.
Speaker 4 (08:05):
Seventy sixth minutes. Yeah, so to talk through.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
It, yeah, right, So Jordan wins gets the ball on
the left side, beats one man and actually gets to
the edge of the line inside the sixth you know,
goes ahead and just serves that across and unfortunately, from
maybe five or six yards out, the ball has an
unfortunate touch and unfortunate piece of contact and it actually
goes off the crossbar.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
Yeah, you got to think that it's a little bit
intentional of Danny Mezosky to try to just poke it
to the far post, and you know, I don't think
Mazovsky could do much with that, considering there's two defenders
around him, so he has to just you know, Jordan
puts it right on his foot, poke it go and
hope for the best.
Speaker 4 (08:46):
You just wish that it had been a slightly different
angle on that poke.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
Yeah, you know, it's just it's a it's a redirection.
That's the that's the goal, right. The ball's coming towards you,
it's coming pretty fast, there's defenders around you, there's a
goal in front of you. How can I just direct
it towards the other side of the goal where you know,
hopefully there's no defender, there's no goalie reaching out. So
it's just it's quick, it's instinctual, and that's how you
want to play as a player trying to score a goal. Unfortunately,
(09:12):
with the ball coming at that much pace and not
a whole lot of time to react, it can be tough.
Soccer is a game of inches in those circumstances. Honestly,
centimeters and even millimeters right, and so if that ball
is just very very slightly to the left of the right,
it causes a pop up, something too far left, something
too far right, and yeah, it can be difficult to
redirect those right on goal.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Sounders have lost tonight in Los Angeles at LAFC by
a score of one to nothing.
Speaker 4 (09:36):
They go into the World Cup break with.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
Two straight losses, still sitting in a good playoff spot,
but they are jumped by LAFC in the standings on
the table with this loss. LAFC, who've been a rough
form they hadn't won in a month. They get a
much needed win going into the break and the Sounders
will need to look to fix things into break to
get back on the right track. We're gonna spend some

time later on in the postgame show talking about how
to potentially fix that attack as well, but there is
still more to discuss from this game. It's a one

Seattle Sounders falling tonight at LAFC by a score of

By Tillman into the back of the night at that
far post on a cross he beats Kilani Coza, Rienzi
and LAFC get the win. With that win and with
the Sounders loss, Seattle is now eight and one at
LAFC in the regular season, and in those nine games,
the Sounders have scored four goals in conceded nineteen.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
Not fun.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
You know what, Kwame. I'm tired of the negativity. We
were hard on the team in the first segment.
Speaker 4 (10:57):
I'm frustrated we were hard on the team and tired
of the negativity.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
I'm gonna change, Like, let's go to some positives, because
I think there is a number of things, Quame, that
we can look at this game and say, no, they
did that well, they did that well, they did that well.
The first half, Let's start there. This was a LAFC.
I wouldn't say domination, but they certainly had almost sixty
percent of the ball.
Speaker 4 (11:21):
They had what you say, twelve.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Shots I think you said in the halftime show, and
they were really putting the Sounders under a lot of pressure,
and credit to Seattle, they did a truly, I think
outstanding job at not letting LAFC get anything too dangerous
in that first half.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
Yeah, you know, we do have to give credit where
credit is due. I think even in the first half,
even though there were twelve shots, it was still only
one shot on goal, right, So it meant that the
Sounders were actually doing the right job getting behind the ball,
putting numbers behind it, actually defending and challenging the shots, right,
And that's what I feel like carried well through the
second half. And so I will say defensively, you know,
(12:01):
if you're not worried about an actual opportunity, an actual
plausible fear, you know, feared opportunity for the other team
to score until midway through the eightieth minute, then I
honestly think that it was a good, solid defensive effort.
We've got to give credit there.
Speaker 4 (12:17):
Yeah, certainly.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
So It's funny because as I look up and I
have like the chances for AFC mart the biggest chance
for AFC before the eighty sixth minute goal came in
the third minute. There was that turnover on the right side.
Son comes down that right side and he doesn't see
Denny Biwanga in the middle of the park. If he
sees him, it's one nothing LFC in the third minute.
(12:38):
And this game, who knows what the score. I mean
last year was for nothing LAFC in Los Angeles, So
who knows. But you shut down, you close the windows,
and he doesn't see him. And I think you mentioned
kind of going into the second half too. The Sounders
really until that eighty sixth minute were the better team
in that second half. They were winning the midfield and
they were getting the better chances.
Speaker 4 (13:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
I think when you see the game in front of you,
when you watch what's happening, I think what's most important
for a team to do is not outperform the other
team early on in the game. It's about seeing what's
happening and adjusting, and I think that's what was most
important today. I think it was really hard to see
Seattle play such a fantastic second half, get a load
(13:23):
of opportunities that could have been converted, and then unfortunately
seeing a goal in the back of their net late
on in the game. Because Seattle really did well to adjust,
I think formation wise, making sure they put the right
players in the right places to take opportunities, give those
opportunities out and and some opportunities actually almost convert right,
And so I think it was a good job realizing
(13:44):
what was going on. I think Specia did a good
job figuring out where la was struggling and then attacking
those lines. And so yeah, I mean there's there's gotta
be some credit there. They definitely adjusted.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Well, yeah, we're gonna look at it. And there's these
four moments. It's the thirtieth minute Hasani plays Jordan running
in on goal, the classic Jordan poke with his right
foot and really well saved by Thomas Hassel, who the
third string goalkeeper for LAFC starting due to injuries. The
forty seventh minute chance that you talked about, the Albert
Rusneck could have laid it off, could have had a
(14:16):
shot on goal where he just doesn't see and he
doesn't turn the right way. The sixty ninth minute Snyder
Burnell shot from the top of the box really well,
forcing a save. And then seventy sixth minute the Jordan
Morris gets in the primusis zone, puts the pass right
on Mazovski's foot and his shot goes off the crossbar
those four moments and you aren't able to get any

one of them in. The Sounders do fall one to nothing. Well,
we're on the subject of good things. It is time

Well, Kwame, I think that when we talked to it
in the first segment about the offense getting shut out.
Now back to back games Galaxy last week, LAFC this week,
and you made a comment during the game that I
thought was interesting and very fun to consider. Imagine if
Denny Mwonga was on the Sounders, and I kind of
sort of put that through my head and thought, all right,
(17:19):
how would that function and where would Jordan go? And
it's got my brain kind of, you know, working and
rolling this ball saying two questions, where's Jordan Morris's best
position right now? And what kind of player would offensively
best help this team score goals? Because very simply, I mean,
they have a lot of general allocation money, they have
(17:41):
a lot of gam that they can spend this year
that they've gotten various deals and you know, whether it
be the Georgia Manongoo deal, the read Baker Whiting deal,
lots of different trades that they made and sales that
they made. The question is what kind of a player
would be best to use that money on to help
this attack?
Speaker 3 (17:58):
Yeah, I think a player who can take on defenders
with the ball at their feet. I think that that
would be a really impactful area for the Sounders to strength.
And now I will say today, when Jordan got moved
out to the left, he did a fantastic job taking
on a player, right, So you gotta be happy about that, right,
you got to think what can we then do to
compliment this. I think it was tough for Jordan to
(18:19):
get the ball at the top. You know, it's been
a little difficult to sneak him into the right areas.
It's been a little difficult playing him into feet. He
didn't have a lot of support. Now, the LA defense
did a fantastic job suffocating the nine whenever the Ford
got the ball right. Anytime that Jordan got the ball
to the feet, it was two, three, four defenders smothering
him right away, but we do want Jordan Morris on
the ball, and so can we get a forward who
(18:41):
is maybe a little bit more dynamic and coming, receiving
the ball, turning and then playing out wide and hopefully, hey,
maybe playing Jordan's feet.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
The way you say that, my mind just goes to Rolruyds.
I mean, you know, the former Sounder striker and a
guy who's so tricky and the flea where not only
obviously his great defensive work I would track back, but
a guy who can take a ball, taking it get
the devender is gonna give you an inch and he's
gonna get you a foot and he's just gonna create
(19:09):
a mile out of the little space that he has
the service to get it back into the box and
the ability to just turn and shoot. Because it just
it feels like this team just needs a And I'm
gonna use this term and it's so generalized, but I
think soccer fans will know it.

We just need a goalscorer. We just need a pure guy.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
Who can just turn or make a play and put
it in the back of the net.
Speaker 4 (19:35):
We need that guy.

Yeah, you know, even when you think about Cristiano Ronaldo
at forty one years old, you think, hey, if the
ball gets in that box, it's going in the back
of the net right right, And so you understand how dynamic.
Speaker 4 (19:48):
A goal scorer is.
Speaker 3 (19:51):
Right, You just have to have somebody who is in
the box, somebody who knows how to be in the
right area, somebody who can sniff a goal from a
mile away. They know where to be, where the service
is coming, where it's going to go. And I think
that's been a difficult one because everywhere else on the
field today, the Sounders, in my opinion, played better, right.
I feel like there was a stress for LAFC where
they actually they got a lot of shots in, they
(20:12):
tried to create a lot of opportunities, but defensively, the
Sounders were so lights out up until that goal that
they blocked any and everything coming towards their half. And
so it really came down to then capitalizing once we
got into that. We had I would say, much better opportunities,
But then what do we do with those opportunities. When
you're playing such a solid defensive game, you have to

reward the defense, you have to reward your keeper, you
have to reward your hard working midfielders with some goals.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
Yeah, Well, the Sounders, they have general allocation money they
can spend.

The World Cup break is here.

They don't play for two months, so we will see
what Craig Wibelater and Han Hour and we'll see what
the club does here in this break and if they
can add to this attack and get that goal scorer
for the second half of the season, really the last
two thirds of the season. We've only played fourteen games
and there's thirty four in a season, so the Sounders
have a long way to go, and we will see

what they do in this World Cup break. We'll take

named the United States men's national team. The whole roster
for the national team came out again. According to this
report from the Guardian, it will go official on Tuesday
at noon.

But Christian rolled On what an honor.

If it is a indeed accurate that he will be
joining the World Cup squad. Who will be playing in
their World Cup games in the group stage, one of
them being on June nineteenth at lumen Field against Australia
and a chance for Christian rolled On to take his
home field for the United States and the World Cup.
What an honor for Christian to be on the team

if it's accurate, and what a chance it will be
for Christian to play on his home field there on
the nineteenth.

Yeah, it's a big deal, you know, being called into
the national team for the World Cup. I mean that's
that is a once in a lifetime opportunity. And you know,
thinking about the players within that position, you have center midfielders, right,
you have you have incredible talent around them, right, you
have Christian Rodan playing, who has Tyler Adams is another

player here who's a fantastic player in Europe right now.
You have Weston McKinney who's a fantastic player in Europe
right now. And then you have a Sebastian baralter Is
Aroun who's another fantastic player. And so you have complimentary
Like if you look at the landscape of center defensive
and center midfielders in the US, that is an incredible
honor to be named alongside those players.

Yeah, and the United States what an opportunity here and
the group right now, they're they're the betting favorite to
win their group.

if you win that, your round of sixteen game is
going to be right here at lumin Field against what
could be Belgium, who is stationed at Long Acres down
to the Sounders facility. By the way, you could have
United States Belgium blast from the past for a trip
to the quarterfinals. I mean, and if that happens, that's

the type of game. That's the type of scenario that
would build tremendous soccer enthusiasm here.

You know, it's funny because you don't want to get
ahead of yourself, but you also want.

To be you know, get I get way ahead of

Go ahead, I feel you you want to be optimistic,
and so we're looking to the future. We're seeing the
possibilities here. Now, it's a winnable group, right, And if
you get that winnable group and you get an opportunity
to get past it, then you have a chance, right,
you have a chance. It means that you solidify yourself
at the top of the group, at top of a group,
build some confidence then going into maybe play a third

place team and if you can do that and just
go in with your best, because at the end of
the day, when we think about the game of football,
it's not about the better team, it's about the team
who comes to play, right, and so come in, show up,
play against teams that you technically should beat, and then
you pave your way to arguably one of the best
teams in terms of at least on paper, one of
the best teams of the last decade. Unfortunately Belziums underperformed

a little bit in terms of what they should be
able to do. But I mean, for goodness sake, to
be able to step on the field with players of
that caliber, that's gonna be an incredible.

for sure, but still a very very good country.

Back to back shutout losses to Los Angeles teams. Last
week it was two nothing at home to the Galaxy,
and then tonight down in Los Angeles against LAFC at
BMO Stadium, the Sounders fall by a score of one

to nothing. We welcome you into the post game show
Jackson Felts alongside Kwame Apaya, as we are going to
be breaking down this one and nothing loss for the
next half hour. Let's start where this game was decided.
Kwame in the eighty sixth minute, Tyler Boyd gets some
space there on the right side, he crosses it to
(01:18):
the far post and Tillman puts it in the back
of the net. His brother's off the World Cup and
he's scoring for LAFC to give them that one nothing goal.
Let's start there and talk to me about what you
saw on that play in that goal for LAFC.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
You know, in a tight game like that, it comes
to just moments where you might accidentally turn off for
just this second. I feel like Seattle was applying so
much pressure that in that moment it just became, you know,
a quick glimpse of just losing a little bit of attention.
We saw the ball go down the right side, knew
who had a slight bit of a moment just not
covering early enough, not getting to the attacker early enough,
(01:57):
and we had a cross right into the box. And
then obviously he had a play who was coming from
behind someone, which is really difficult to mark as a
defender because typically you're just looking at the ball. Your
goal is to get to it. But if someone's behind
you and sees that ball and is aggressive enough, they're
gonna get to it first. And so just a bit
of a turnoff moment from both far outside backs. Yeah,
(02:17):
gets it gets a little tough.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Yeah, Kilanie is certainly caught ball watching there on that
far post as Tilman just gets right by him and
gets his position. And you can watch the replay and
and you know, are what we're watching on the video
here from Apple TV. They have this great goal cam
and as you look at the goal cam, Kilanie, you
just it's it's the deer in the headlights. Look of
(02:40):
oh god, Timothy, he was he already has position, he's
already running, He's got the spot.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
The ball's coming.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
I'm too late, and Kilanie sees it coming and it
is too late, I think, Kwame. We have to spend
a good amount of time talking about the lack of offense,
and you know, we spend some time in pregame talking
about it, saying, listen, seventeen goals in twelve games is
not good enough on any level. We need more offensive production.
(03:07):
This team has not been enough attack minded. We haven't
been good enough in the offensive part of the field,
and we need more. It's an LAFC team that is
also very good defensively. Seventeen goals given up in fourteen
games going in now seventeen goals given up in fifteen
games total, they're tremendous. Even without their starting goalkeeper, hugilaris
(03:27):
still a good defense. But again, Seattle just not enough offensively.
And there's a lot of levels kwame we can talk
about this. We'll just start with the overall view from
thirty five thousand feet in this game getting shut out.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Yeah, you know, it was a game of just trying
to force the ball. I think we both had moments
where we actually wanted Seattle to try to force the
ball just a little bit more. Right, There was just
it felt like they were on their heels defensively and offensively.
At times. We saw the ball get into great positions
to actually put a player through, whereas we would just
(04:03):
consistently play the ball back. It just felt like we
were playing the ball back every opportunity that we could.
It was a very flat game, and we hope to
see a little bit more attack mindedness from such an
attacking you know side. You know, you have a great
forward and Jordan Morris, you got Us Ferro on the
right side. You've got Paul Rothrock on the left, all
(04:23):
pacy quick, you know, attack minded players. But you just
didn't see the ball get to them in attacking positions.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Just didn't feel like they were pushing right. They didn't
feel like they were pushing up. And when they tried
to get going on the wings, LAFC quickly shut them down.
When they tried to go through the middle, it worked,
but those lanes weren't always open, and it just felt
like I think you used the word flat right there,
and I felt flat against the Galaxy, and the offense
felt flat again here, like there just wasn't enough push
(04:50):
from those guys.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
Yeah, and then you have the those opportunities that you
have to capitalize on when you do get them. You know,
I'm trying to remember exactly if it was.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
There's a lot, and I can go through it here.
Thirtieth minute you have to throw ball to Jordan Morris.
That one is saved by Hassle. But then the one
you're talking about Rusnak you just mentioned it there forty
seventh minutes where right after the halftime wastele you get positioned.
I think it's a transition moment and even Hassle is
taken out.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
Of his goal. Yeah, and what a moment that could
have been.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Yeah, you know, you're on your favorite left foot there,
I see it. It makes sense. But you have two
other players in the box right, you have a defender
and a goalie completely taken up, completely consumed by your movement.
What you do there is you give it to a
player in a better position.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
We saw a.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
Player at the top of the key right waiting for
a layoff, so you can just get a direct shot
on goal, no goalie in net, and then you just
have Rusnak, I think, just drifting a little bit further.
And it's tough because in your mind, your thoughts are, hey,
I want to get myself into a better position to
shoot this ball. But at the angle that you're going,
all you're doing is hurting your ability to actually score,
(05:56):
and so you might as well give it to somebody
in a better position.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Yeah, Because Rusnak turns to his right on his left foot,
he's clearly looking at goal and he's saying, can I
shoot this from this angle on my left foot? But
if he turns the other way, then suddenly he has
those guys he can lay the ball off to. And
what an opportunity there that was in the forty seventh minute,
you know, And then across happens a moment Reagan gets down,
(06:21):
he gets back up, can't put it in the back
of the net.
Speaker 4 (06:24):
We have sixty ninth minute.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
Snyder Burnell comes on six minutes earlier, and then he
comes in the sixty ninth minute, has a great shot
from the top of the box that forces to save
We see Danny Mazoski come on in the sixty ninth minute.
That was kind of an interesting shift, Kwame, because we
were in that second half, in the middle of the
second half, Sounders had a pretty good twenty minute stretch
and we were saying, all right, you need to make
(06:46):
a shift, maybe perhaps a tactical shift to get this
attack going to lose that flatness, to get more, you know,
going with the with the offense. And it was a
simple Mazofski for Rothrock, which sent him to the top,
Jordan Morris to the wing. And you and I kind
of both said it felt like there could have been
a formation change here, whether it be take Klannie off
(07:07):
and put a forward on, and you could have had
some sort of change in a sort of a sort
of like Forfe shift, but a shift that keeps you
in the same format of the four two three one.
I don't think either of us felt like that was enough.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Yeah, it was interesting. We talked a lot about how
to create more of an attacking minded like playset and
a type of minded you know, position and angle and formation,
and it really felt like putting more numbers up top
would have made a bit more sense. Honestly, we kind
of we flattened out the midfield, right. We took away
(07:41):
the depth of the midfield with the thought that hey,
if we can make sure we're always winning that ball
at the line of interception, then where we have options
forward And we did talk about, hey, if we can
get to a player up top with Jordan Morris to help,
it makes sense here we could do something with it.
But once that actually happened, I don't know if we
were able to capitalize as much as possible. Now, we
(08:02):
did see a great run from Jordan Morris down the
left side.
Speaker 4 (08:05):
Seventy sixth minutes. Yeah, so to talk through.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
It, yeah, right, So Jordan wins gets the ball on
the left side, beats one man and actually gets to
the edge of the line inside the sixth you know,
goes ahead and just serves that across and unfortunately, from
maybe five or six yards out, the ball has an
unfortunate touch and unfortunate piece of contact and it actually
goes off the crossbar.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
Yeah, you got to think that it's a little bit
intentional of Danny Mezosky to try to just poke it
to the far post, and you know, I don't think
Mazovsky could do much with that, considering there's two defenders
around him, so he has to just you know, Jordan
puts it right on his foot, poke it go and
hope for the best.
Speaker 4 (08:46):
You just wish that it had been a slightly different
angle on that poke.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
Yeah, you know, it's just it's a it's a redirection.
That's the that's the goal, right. The ball's coming towards you,
it's coming pretty fast, there's defenders around you, there's a
goal in front of you. How can I just direct
it towards the other side of the goal where you know,
hopefully there's no defender, there's no goalie reaching out. So
it's just it's quick, it's instinctual, and that's how you
want to play as a player trying to score a goal. Unfortunately,
(09:12):
with the ball coming at that much pace and not
a whole lot of time to react, it can be tough.
Soccer is a game of inches in those circumstances. Honestly,
centimeters and even millimeters right, and so if that ball
is just very very slightly to the left of the right,
it causes a pop up, something too far left, something
too far right, and yeah, it can be difficult to
redirect those right on goal.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Sounders have lost tonight in Los Angeles at LAFC by
a score of one to nothing.
Speaker 4 (09:36):
They go into the World Cup break with.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
Two straight losses, still sitting in a good playoff spot,
but they are jumped by LAFC in the standings on
the table with this loss. LAFC, who've been a rough
form they hadn't won in a month. They get a
much needed win going into the break and the Sounders
will need to look to fix things into break to
get back on the right track. We're gonna spend some
(09:59):
time later on in the postgame show talking about how
to potentially fix that attack as well, but there is
still more to discuss from this game. It's a one

By Tillman into the back of the night at that
far post on a cross he beats Kilani Coza, Rienzi
and LAFC get the win. With that win and with
the Sounders loss, Seattle is now eight and one at
LAFC in the regular season, and in those nine games,
the Sounders have scored four goals in conceded nineteen.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
Not fun.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
You know what, Kwame. I'm tired of the negativity. We
were hard on the team in the first segment.
Speaker 4 (10:57):
I'm frustrated we were hard on the team and tired
of the negativity.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
I'm gonna change, Like, let's go to some positives, because
I think there is a number of things, Quame, that
we can look at this game and say, no, they
did that well, they did that well, they did that well.
The first half, Let's start there. This was a LAFC.
I wouldn't say domination, but they certainly had almost sixty
percent of the ball.
Speaker 4 (11:21):
They had what you say, twelve.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Shots I think you said in the halftime show, and
they were really putting the Sounders under a lot of pressure,
and credit to Seattle, they did a truly, I think
outstanding job at not letting LAFC get anything too dangerous
in that first half.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
Yeah, you know, we do have to give credit where
credit is due. I think even in the first half,
even though there were twelve shots, it was still only
one shot on goal, right, So it meant that the
Sounders were actually doing the right job getting behind the ball,
putting numbers behind it, actually defending and challenging the shots, right,
And that's what I feel like carried well through the
second half. And so I will say defensively, you know,
(12:01):
if you're not worried about an actual opportunity, an actual
plausible fear, you know, feared opportunity for the other team
to score until midway through the eightieth minute, then I
honestly think that it was a good, solid defensive effort.
We've got to give credit there.
Speaker 4 (12:17):
Yeah, certainly.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
So It's funny because as I look up and I
have like the chances for AFC mart the biggest chance
for AFC before the eighty sixth minute goal came in
the third minute. There was that turnover on the right side.
Son comes down that right side and he doesn't see
Denny Biwanga in the middle of the park. If he
sees him, it's one nothing LFC in the third minute.
(12:38):
And this game, who knows what the score. I mean
last year was for nothing LAFC in Los Angeles, So
who knows. But you shut down, you close the windows,
and he doesn't see him. And I think you mentioned
kind of going into the second half too. The Sounders
really until that eighty sixth minute were the better team
in that second half. They were winning the midfield and
they were getting the better chances.
Speaker 4 (13:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
I think when you see the game in front of you,
when you watch what's happening, I think what's most important
for a team to do is not outperform the other
team early on in the game. It's about seeing what's
happening and adjusting, and I think that's what was most
important today. I think it was really hard to see
Seattle play such a fantastic second half, get a load
(13:23):
of opportunities that could have been converted, and then unfortunately
seeing a goal in the back of their net late
on in the game. Because Seattle really did well to adjust,
I think formation wise, making sure they put the right
players in the right places to take opportunities, give those
opportunities out and and some opportunities actually almost convert right,
And so I think it was a good job realizing
(13:44):
what was going on. I think Specia did a good
job figuring out where la was struggling and then attacking
those lines. And so yeah, I mean there's there's gotta
be some credit there. They definitely adjusted.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Well, yeah, we're gonna look at it. And there's these
four moments. It's the thirtieth minute Hasani plays Jordan running
in on goal, the classic Jordan poke with his right
foot and really well saved by Thomas Hassel, who the
third string goalkeeper for LAFC starting due to injuries. The
forty seventh minute chance that you talked about, the Albert
Rusneck could have laid it off, could have had a
(14:16):
shot on goal where he just doesn't see and he
doesn't turn the right way. The sixty ninth minute Snyder
Burnell shot from the top of the box really well,
forcing a save. And then seventy sixth minute the Jordan
Morris gets in the primusis zone, puts the pass right
on Mazovski's foot and his shot goes off the crossbar
those four moments and you aren't able to get any
(14:37):
one of them in. The Sounders do fall one to nothing. Well,
we're on the subject of good things. It is time

this play yet. This was an amazing chance for LAFC,

Well, Kwame, I think that when we talked to it
in the first segment about the offense getting shut out.
Now back to back games Galaxy last week, LAFC this week,
and you made a comment during the game that I
thought was interesting and very fun to consider. Imagine if
Denny Mwonga was on the Sounders, and I kind of
sort of put that through my head and thought, all right,
(17:19):
how would that function and where would Jordan go? And
it's got my brain kind of, you know, working and
rolling this ball saying two questions, where's Jordan Morris's best
position right now? And what kind of player would offensively
best help this team score goals? Because very simply, I mean,
they have a lot of general allocation money, they have
(17:41):
a lot of gam that they can spend this year
that they've gotten various deals and you know, whether it
be the Georgia Manongoo deal, the read Baker Whiting deal,
lots of different trades that they made and sales that
they made. The question is what kind of a player
would be best to use that money on to help
this attack?
Speaker 3 (17:58):
Yeah, I think a player who can take on defenders
with the ball at their feet. I think that that
would be a really impactful area for the Sounders to strength.
And now I will say today, when Jordan got moved
out to the left, he did a fantastic job taking
on a player, right, So you gotta be happy about that, right,
you got to think what can we then do to
compliment this. I think it was tough for Jordan to
(18:19):
get the ball at the top. You know, it's been
a little difficult to sneak him into the right areas.
It's been a little difficult playing him into feet. He
didn't have a lot of support. Now, the LA defense
did a fantastic job suffocating the nine whenever the Ford
got the ball right. Anytime that Jordan got the ball
to the feet, it was two, three, four defenders smothering
him right away, but we do want Jordan Morris on
the ball, and so can we get a forward who
(18:41):
is maybe a little bit more dynamic and coming, receiving
the ball, turning and then playing out wide and hopefully, hey,
maybe playing Jordan's feet.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
The way you say that, my mind just goes to Rolruyds.
I mean, you know, the former Sounder striker and a
guy who's so tricky and the flea where not only
obviously his great defensive work I would track back, but
a guy who can take a ball, taking it get
the devender is gonna give you an inch and he's
gonna get you a foot and he's just gonna create
(19:09):
a mile out of the little space that he has
the service to get it back into the box and
the ability to just turn and shoot. Because it just
it feels like this team just needs a And I'm
gonna use this term and it's so generalized, but I
think soccer fans will know it.
Speaker 4 (19:26):
We just need a goalscorer. We just need a pure guy.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
Who can just turn or make a play and put
it in the back of the net.
Speaker 4 (19:35):
We need that guy.
Speaker 3 (19:36):
Yeah, you know, even when you think about Cristiano Ronaldo
at forty one years old, you think, hey, if the
ball gets in that box, it's going in the back
of the net right right, And so you understand how dynamic.
Speaker 4 (19:48):
A goal scorer is.
Speaker 3 (19:51):
Right, You just have to have somebody who is in
the box, somebody who knows how to be in the
right area, somebody who can sniff a goal from a
mile away. They know where to be, where the service
is coming, where it's going to go. And I think
that's been a difficult one because everywhere else on the
field today, the Sounders, in my opinion, played better, right.
I feel like there was a stress for LAFC where
they actually they got a lot of shots in, they
(20:12):
tried to create a lot of opportunities, but defensively, the
Sounders were so lights out up until that goal that
they blocked any and everything coming towards their half. And
so it really came down to then capitalizing once we
got into that. We had I would say, much better opportunities,
But then what do we do with those opportunities. When
you're playing such a solid defensive game, you have to
(20:33):
reward the defense, you have to reward your keeper, you
have to reward your hard working midfielders with some goals.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
Yeah, Well, the Sounders, they have general allocation money they
can spend.
Speaker 4 (20:43):
The World Cup break is here.

They don't play for two months, so we will see
what Craig Wibelater and Han Hour and we'll see what
the club does here in this break and if they
can add to this attack and get that goal scorer
for the second half of the season, really the last
two thirds of the season. We've only played fourteen games
and there's thirty four in a season, so the Sounders
have a long way to go, and we will see

what they do in this World Cup break. We'll take

From the Guardian yesterday that Christian rolled On has been
named the United States men's national team. The whole roster
for the national team came out again. According to this
report from the Guardian, it will go official on Tuesday
at noon.

But Christian rolled On what an honor.

If it is a indeed accurate that he will be
joining the World Cup squad. Who will be playing in
their World Cup games in the group stage, one of
them being on June nineteenth at lumen Field against Australia
and a chance for Christian rolled On to take his
home field for the United States and the World Cup.
What an honor for Christian to be on the team

if it's accurate, and what a chance it will be
for Christian to play on his home field there on
the nineteenth.

Yeah, it's a big deal, you know, being called into
the national team for the World Cup. I mean that's
that is a once in a lifetime opportunity. And you know,
thinking about the players within that position, you have center midfielders, right,
you have you have incredible talent around them, right, you
have Christian Rodan playing, who has Tyler Adams is another

player here who's a fantastic player in Europe right now.
You have Weston McKinney who's a fantastic player in Europe
right now. And then you have a Sebastian baralter Is
Aroun who's another fantastic player. And so you have complimentary

and center midfielders in the US, that is an incredible
honor to be named alongside those players.

Yeah, and the United States what an opportunity here and
the group right now, they're they're the betting favorite to
win their group.

Course have Australia, but United States right now, this is
I mean, this is a chance qual me, I think
for this country to really build such soccer enthusiasm in
the United States right now if you win the group.
And you know what's cool about it is if the
United States wins their group and then if they win
their round of thirty two match, and that would be

against actually a third place team as it works out,
if you win that, your round of sixteen game is
going to be right here at lumin Field against what
could be Belgium, who is stationed at Long Acres down
to the Sounders facility. By the way, you could have
United States Belgium blast from the past for a trip
to the quarterfinals. I mean, and if that happens, that's

the type of game. That's the type of scenario that
would build tremendous soccer enthusiasm here.

Yeah.

You know, it's funny because you don't want to get
ahead of yourself, but you also want.
Speaker 4 (24:55):
To be you know, get I get way ahead of
myself on these things.
Speaker 3 (24:58):
Go ahead, I feel you you want to be optimistic,
and so we're looking to the future. We're seeing the
possibilities here. Now, it's a winnable group, right, And if
you get that winnable group and you get an opportunity
to get past it, then you have a chance, right,
you have a chance. It means that you solidify yourself
at the top of the group, at top of a group,
build some confidence then going into maybe play a third
(25:20):
place team and if you can do that and just
go in with your best, because at the end of
the day, when we think about the game of football,
it's not about the better team, it's about the team
who comes to play, right, and so come in, show up,
play against teams that you technically should beat, and then
you pave your way to arguably one of the best
teams in terms of at least on paper, one of
the best teams of the last decade. Unfortunately Belziums underperformed
(25:43):
a little bit in terms of what they should be
able to do. But I mean, for goodness sake, to
be able to step on the field with players of
that caliber, that's gonna be an incredible.
Speaker 2 (25:52):
Yeah, Debrun and their Golden generation kind of failed them
for sure, but still a very very good country.
Speaker 4 (25:58):
And we'll see what happens.

For the United it's their first game coming up here
and now less than a month, just a couple weeks away,
and then June nineteenth the United States, Australia. Lumenfield cannot
wait to be at that one. That will be exciting
there on that what is it Friday at noon? I
think that day is it should be outstanding. And again,
if the report's accurate, massive congratulations to Christian rolled on again.

Sounders don't play until middle of July, so it's quite
a long time before they are back in action. So
we all will enjoy the World Cup. Hope you all
