How are you men? I'm doinggood, guys, how you going?
We're good? Would have been betterto have the sweep. I would have
loved that against the Astros. Butthree out of four not bad? Your

(01:10):
thoughts on what you saw in thisMariners Astro series? Man three out of
four against the Astro. Yeah, modern times, you've got to be tickled
to death with that. Of course, once you get the three, you
want the four, and it's setup good for us today. But you
know, they were a bit resilientand gave up a few home run balls,

(01:30):
and I think you get out oftheir three out of four, that's
pretty good. That's a pretty goodfour game series. You only scored nine
runs in the four games, butthey were enough. Bottom line is its
wins and losses. And I don'tyou know me, I don't like to
get too deep in the woods onthese numbers, but but I have,
and I'm just looking at you knowthem, from from the offense, the

(01:53):
ops to the punch outs. Thepunchouts are the one thing that I think
are getting to me. Not onlyare they they strike out more than in
Ny beating the American League. Theystrike out more than anybody in the game
of baseball, and I think that'sa detriment. Look at this lineup,
and you know, Polanco's down now, Julio still hasn't really come out of

(02:13):
his season long struggles. He's doingokay, he's holding served, but he's
not doing what we expect out ofJulio. And it's just a you know,
you've got more that's filled in,done a nice job, but can
Zones in the outfield and ray Leeand they've all done decent jobs. But
I think this offense is what itis. You got one guy with an

(02:34):
OPS over seven hundred, that's Raleigh, the lest of them marked. You
know, the run different differential isa minus seven. Yet you're leading,
you're leading the division. You know, I looked up Arizona a year ago
and went to the World Series. Two games away from winning the World Series.
They were minus nine in the rundifferential for the year. So it
is possible. This division we've beentalking about, it's gettable this year,

(02:58):
it's vulnerable this year. Right nowthey got to They got a three game
lead over the Texas Rangers. SoI think all that being said, you
got to take it. You gotto take being atop the division right now
at UH. At this point inthe season, the first month of the
season, Logan was making an accountof himself to be, you know,

(03:19):
thought of as one of the premierpitchers in all of baseball, right and
number one type of guy. AndUH struggled again today that kind of mirror
some of the struggles he's had oflate. What's what? What do you
make of him? I think Ithink this whole Hugh, I think this
this whole staff. You can interact. I'm not interact. I don't think
that's the word. They're movable pieces, so necessarily do I think Gilbert's A

(03:44):
three. No is the A oneor two sometimes, But I think you
can say that for any of theseguys. I think Castile goes on his
runs where he's that bona fide numberone guy. But there's times during the
season that we've all seen in thelast year, year and a half where
wow, we want to we wantGilbert as our number one or we want
a Kirby to be our number oneright now. So I think they're interchangeable

(04:05):
parts this team. To me,this starting rotation as good as it is,
and and I'm a believer and Iwill be a believer because these are
five quality, quality starters. Itis good. I'll put them up against
anybody in the league as far asone through five. But there's not that
Verlander, you know, at thetop, that's just the go to guy,

(04:27):
always has been, always will be. There's no Wheeler who's the top
of the top of the rotation guy. They're interchangeable. They all can be
number ones at time, but theybut they go. They seem to have
their funks and they go in andout. You know, Kirby's done it.
Kirby comes out of the funk.Miller had a rough month. He's
pitched better lately. Wu's been unbelievablesince he's been back. But but I

(04:49):
just I don't worry about about Gilbert. I really don't. I mean,
he's going to go through his stretches. He's still a young pitcher. You
know, he's he's gaining more moreexperience, but it's not like he's a
ten year veteran and we know whatto expect now. He's still feeling his
way and getting better. I'm notworried about him at all. I'm not
worried about anybody in this staff.Really. I'm worried about it. I'm

(05:11):
worried about the offense. Well, you should look at it and Julio.
If Julio doesn't do it, Let'sbe honest, who's really playing below their
level where we expect? Oh man, he's really underachieving this year. You
look up and down that lineup, there's really nobody to point to and say,
well, we expect a lot moreout of him. Maybe of Crawford,
but Crawford's been down a lot.You know. The one thing about

(05:33):
Crawford and I'll say this, andteams like this that aren't going to be
big offensive teams, you've got todo the little things right. You've got
to be the Kansas City Royals oftwenty fifteen and maybe a similar version of
the Kansas City Worlds in twenty twentyfour. Where you move runners, you
have a runner on third less thantwo, you find a way to get

(05:55):
him in. And I'll say onething for Crawford, if I have that
situation, that runner on third, just like last night when he hit the
sack, fly, I want Crawfordup more than anyone else on this team
in a situational hitting position. AndCrawford came through last night, got the
sack, fly yet not the sexiestthing hitting the fly ball, but in
the time, in the moment, that's all they needed, and they've got

(06:16):
to take that kind of kind ofapproach to how they play this game.
Well, Bony, when you justsaid there is anybody you know underperforming the
back of their baseball card, Ithought you were going to go the other
way and say, is anybody surpassingwhat the expectations were? Because the answer
to that question is absolutely not.But there are a ton of guys,

(06:39):
a ton of guys I would disagreewith you, and maybe it misspoke,
and maybe it's it's just, uh, maybe my ears aren't working so good
today. I think there's a tonof guys that are underperforming and not living
up to the expectations that their careerssay they should be performing at they met
Okay, hang on it. Well. Mitch Garver's career ops is eight h
two. He's at five ninety threeright now. Mitch right, Mitch Hannigers.

(07:02):
Mitch Hanniger's career ops is seven eightyfour. He's at six thirty two
right now. Polanco's career ops isseven seventy one. He's at five ninety
five right now, and don't evenget me going on Julio. I mean,
there's four or five guys on thisbaseball team that are hundreds of points
below their career ops average and noteven close to doing what their baseball card

(07:25):
says they should be doing. Ithink you're softy. Here's what I'm gonna
tell you. Okay, on averagefor a career, I'll agree with you,
But I'm talking about modern day thelast two or three years. When
you watched Mitch Hanniger for the lasttwo years and you see what he's doing,
are you surprised right now? Maybeif it was twenty and sixteen,

(07:46):
you'd be surprised, But right now, are you surprised with Polonco four years
ago when he hit thirty two homersin Minnesota, you'd be surprised at the
next year he was doing this.I'm not surprised at all that he's hovering
around two hundred at all. Now. I am very surprised with Julio.
I think you have a point withJulio, who I have huge expectations for,

(08:07):
and I also agree with you onGarber. Garber is much I thought
he was going to be, uhsolidify that lineup, come over from that
World Championship Texas team and and andbe a real plus to this offense.
Sorry, he hasn't been, soI'll give you Julio, I'll give you
Garb. But in modern times, and I'm talking the last two, three,
four years. Okay, there's notone guy in this lineup besides the

(08:28):
two we mentioned that are surprising meat all. Polanco's ops is two hundred
points lower than it was a yearago. Two doesn't doesn't surprise me.
I've watched doesn't surprise me. I'vewatched go on the injured list, come
off the injured list. Yeah,I looked at those sexy numbers four years
ago and I go, yeah, but is that ever going to happen again?

(08:48):
I have my doubts. It doesn'tsurprise me one bit. Also,
that hole, that hole in Seattle, when that second basement comes in,
it's like that's where people go todie. Second Base Sin, Seattle,
with the last one the exception beingCanoe. Well, if you go too
yeah, you know, and ifyou go to uh, if you go

(09:11):
to war you know, that's athat's a common thing I've heard on POTO,
I've heard the Porto. You mentionedwar, so like I said it's
got to have some relevance. Stupid. Okay, all right, let's let's
let's let's stipulate that de Poto isstupid. All right, so we have
common ground out way, But Ididn't say stupid. I can saying whether

(09:31):
war is a relevant relevant stat intwenty twenty. Well, let's let's let's
just say that I'm saying because Depotoused the term, I'm going to use
the term. A year ago,you had Julia was twelfth in all of
baseball with five point six war.Now he he is one hundred and sixty

(09:54):
ninth in all of baseball with apoint nine. He's under a one war.
Or you know when when the bestI mean last year, you know
the best was Acunya at nine pointzero. And so I don't know,
Okay, if if you're saying war'sirrelevant, I guess we got to move
on to another topic. But doyou have any any response? I mean,

(10:16):
you know it's a hell of adrop off from twelfth to one sixty
ninth. You know why I saywars irrelevant is because Dante Bichett for a
career, had a negative war,and I played against Dontas Baschet for a
lot of years and he was arun producer, that was a force in
the middle of the line up.Anyway, that's for another day. I
agree with you on Julio. Yeah, I agree with you on Julio.
Uh and and Acuna. Acunya justwent down. He's going to be out

(10:39):
for the year. He had thatfreak knee injury. I think it's a
an acl and he was playing similarto how Julio is right now. He's
coming off an MVP forty seventy season. I think Acunya before the injury had
three homers on the year, hittingright around where Hulu is hitting two sixty
two seventy, or he might havebeen hitting lower that to forty. Julio,

(11:00):
I agree with you. I mean, this is the this is the
man. This is the guy inthe front of the media. Guy.
Julio Rodriguez, who we have hugeexpectations for, had the huge contract,
is still a young young man.But at this stage Memorial Day, past
Memorial Day, going into June,to be sitting there with four homers,
Yeah, and when you're counting onhim. The difference between Julio and Acuna

(11:24):
is in Atlanta, Cunya has gota lot of big weapons around him that
he he could he could kind ofweather the storm until he got hot.
Whereas Julio's in a position where ifhe doesn't get hot, who's going to
get hot and carry the mail? And by the way, Boonie, he's
done. No, that's what Iwas just talking about. No, before
the injuries, Before the injury,I mean, he's still got Olsen Azuna

(11:46):
around him, Riley, big timeplayers. Julio is in a different boat.
I mean, if Julio doesn't doit, who's really going to carry
the mail for the Seattle team thatyou look on paper right now? Yeah,
nobody. I totally agree with you. They are. I look and
feel like a totally different animal whenJulio Rodriguez is raking. I mean it's
incredible how much different this team lookswhen he's getting a job done. But

(12:09):
yesterday, Boone, I want toask him Brett Boone again with us courtesy
of our friends at venu Kings dotcom. Mitch Garver caught twenty eight games
for the Rangers last year and hadI believe, like an eleven hundred ops
when he caught for Texas. Hegot the start behind the plate yesterday struck
out twice, and they yanked himfor cal Raley. Do you believe in
that that you can get a guy'sback going by either putting him in a

(12:33):
familiar position giving him a day offfrom the field, because it didn't seem
to work for garvery yesterday. Well, I do. I think you could
mix it up. I mean someguys, you know, when you're when
you're dhing, it's a different animalversus when you're out there interactive. You
have you have kind of a someyou can get away from the ab because

(12:54):
you've got other things to do.You go out there, you catch,
You got to get your picture.Your main goal when you're catching is I
get get this pitcher through this game. Do you have his good stuff?
Do you have his average stuff? My job, he's got his average stuff,
is to get on the same pageand get him through this game.
You gotta win out of it.Yesterday, without a doubt. I believe
that can help, just get inyour mind off when you're a designated hitter

(13:15):
and you're scuffling. You know,And I used to talk to Edgar about
this. I said, I don'tknow how you do it on a daily
basis, And he would tell me, he said, Booneie. It takes
it takes time, It takes experienceto get into a routine. Basically,
you're pinch hitting four times a gamebecause you don't do anything after. You
know, I was thankful for whenI had my offensive struggles. Man,
I can grab my glove and gotake a hit away from somebody else and

(13:37):
get out some of my frustration. But when you're the designated hitter or it
is like a pinch hit, it'slike it's all or nothing in hit and
being as hard as it is,it can wear on you after awhile.
So to put the gear on andhave something else where you can contribute in
another fashion, I think that canbe healthy and I think it's something that
sometimes can kickstart you. Brett Boonewith us and Boonie, I'm gonna put

(14:01):
you on a two question quiz.A deal. There we go. You
game for that? Okay, It'sall right, there's no right and wrong
answer, So it's not really bythe way, Bernie, were you told
there was gonna be a quiz beforeyou came out the here today with us?
Yeah? He did not clear thatwith my people. He's ready for
a new picture out of the bullpen. He can he can handle lefties and

(14:22):
righties. So all right, let'sjust pause for a moment, and let's
assess who won. Twenty two.You go acquire Castillo twenty three your relinquished
Sea Walt. Okay, so we'retalking about those two trades, and I'm
gonna put you on aker scale forthis quiz. All right, you got
five You got five options on eachof those. All right, for each

(14:43):
guy? Say who won? Whowon? Right now, with the benefit
of today, let's start with Castillo, and you get five options either either
Mariner's decisive win, Mariner's slight win, a deady and draw, a reds
slight win, or Red's decisive win. So let's let's uh, let's you

(15:05):
got one of five responses to giveon that. Uh. Revisit and refresh
my memory on the Castillo deal. What was who was involved? It was
Castillo four David Off the top ofmy head, I don't remember. To
be totally honest with you, Igave you a number a second. Now
that that means we're the three stooges, because the non the three of us

(15:28):
can get Hang on a minute,I'll give it to you in a minute,
just to say that, you knowwhat, Booty, that might be
part of the the of your response, right, you know what I mean,
like like we don't even know,I didn't know who the deal was.
Yeah, well that might be reflectedin it. Yeah, so here
you go, hang on, itwas Yeah, it was okay, Castillo

(15:50):
to the Mariners for Edwin Arroyo,Andrew Moore, noel Vie Marte and Levi
Stout. I'd say that Mariners arewinning that slightly or decisively decisively agree decisively.
Okay, so let's go to let'sgo to seawaller we have less time
to assess. But again, yougot those five choices for the seawall trade.

(16:15):
Okay, but who do we?Who do we? Who'd we get?
Uh? For the seawall ken ZoneRojas and I believe Ryan Bliss was
a part of that trade as well. Well. Seawall the year ago was
in the World Series closing games?Am I correct? Arizona? Seawall in
Arizona. Yeah, yeah, soI would say that's still that's I think

(16:36):
that's still too young. It's toofresh, and we can know but you
have to but you gotta have yougot answers Arizona. I'm gonna say Arizona
slight good deal. They got aslight slightly better because they had they got
a ring for for the National Leagueand they were in the World Series.
And a big part of that, especially down the stretch, is seawall throwing

(16:57):
that invisible. So he was ahuge part of the reason they got to
the World Series. Slight to manageArizona. Do you project then maybe a
year from now, two years fromnow, because obviously he acquired more youth.
Do you think that what the Marinersacquired. Do you think we could
revisit that. What's the likelihood thatwe say, hey, that's a draw
or win for the Mariners. Okay, so I said decisive win on cast

(17:18):
deal. I think in the longterm, I think it's still going to
be a win for the Mariners. And I think in the long haul,
from a sea wall perspective, hegot hurt this year. I think in
the long haul it's going to bea wash on the seawall. Yeah,
but I think you're right though fornow, I think the Diamondbacks benefited more
from the deal than the Mariners.Dead now, they may benefit right long

(17:41):
term this October, if Rojas iskilling it and Canzona is clutch and all
that stuff, and Bliss does whatwe think he's gonna do. They got
three guys that are all in thebig leagues right now on the roster.
So but for now, Arizona tookadvantage of that because they went to the
World Series in large part because ofPaul Seawall, for sure. All right,
anymore quizzes. You are good, past, Hugh. I also want

(18:03):
to tell you this on the seawllddeal, I'll add this to it.
I think if we would have keptSeawald a year ago. Yeah, we
talked about that yesterday. Thousand percent. All right, Boonie, great stuff,
appreciate it and check your email. All right, man, all right,
bud By, all right, palBret Boone with us on the show.
How about we get a break. No more quizzes without clearing it with

(18:26):
the staff first, for God's sakes. Mike McDonald, he spoke after the
ot A today. He will hearfrom the head coach of the Hawks next
