brought to you by Duke Seafood.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Why don't you make it a Duke's night tonight?

Speaker 3 (00:06):
Reserve your table today at dukesseafood.com.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Now, back to Softie and Dick.

Speaker 3 (00:11):
On Sports Radio 93.3 KJR-FM.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
All right, we are back. Larry Stone will join us.

Speaker 4 (00:17):
We'll talk some baseball, talk some football, talk some college football,
Apple Cup, the whole thing, with Larry coming up next
right here on 93.3 KJR-FM, courtesy of our friends at
the Ram. But it's that time of the week, that
time of the day, we get to talk some soccer
with our friend Brian Schmetzer, joining us right now on
the radio show.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
No, we play football. I believe you call it soccer. Ryan,
how are you, man? What's going on?

Speaker 1 (00:42):
Well, I'm hanging in there, too. I mean, we got
a playoff chase in our sport as well, but I
better get my A game on. I mean, you guys
were talking. you know, pretty harsh things about Dan. I
better get my game back in gear.

Speaker 4 (01:00):
Yeah, you should hear the way we talk about you
behind your back, by the way.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
It's horrible, brutal. I mean, I wouldn't talk to my
mother with that mouth for crying out loud.

Speaker 4 (01:08):
Well, the new guy scores a couple of goals in
his debut, and then he gets shut out against New York.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
What happened?

Speaker 1 (01:18):
Well, it was our second-highest game game for expected goals,
but we got a goose egg. So that's not good.
I mean, you know, it's not good, but the only
silver lining, the silver lining is that we created a

(01:39):
lot of chances. Their goalkeeper stood on his head. I mean,
let's give the opponent credit when credit is due, but man,
I mean, Deion didn't score, but He plays the ball
back inside the 18-yard box back to Albert because he
could have been selfish, but he plays it back to Albert.
Albert's scoring 99 out of 100 times from that zone,

(02:03):
and then the new kid has two goals in his
first game, a critical assist in his second. things just
didn't pan out. We weren't just able to put the
ball back in the back of the net.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
So when you look back on a game like this,
do you just sometimes throw your hands up and say,
my God, I mean, this goalie had an otherworldly performance?

Speaker 1 (02:22):
Sometimes, Dick. I mean, sometimes they do, but sometimes when
the team doesn't play well, about 62.5% of the time,
I remain calm. But that other 40 some odd percent, 38%,
I let them have it. And I wasn't Real happy
with the final product. I thought some of the bigger

(02:42):
players need to step up.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
But we're going to get there. We're going to get there.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
Well, whatever that percentage is that you let them have it,
that's about 38% more than Dan Wilson, by the way.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
I'll tell you that right now. I mean, you kind
of walked right into that one, pal. There's no doubt
about it.

Speaker 4 (02:57):
You want to walk across the street and show Dan
how to do that, that'd be great. But, I mean, look,
I'm not trying to be a jerk here towards Dan
because I like Dan a lot, but I think this
team needs a different approach.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
And it does bring up a question, though, man.

Speaker 4 (03:09):
As a head coach, as a manager, as the leader
of a professional sports franchise, do you think that you
need to have the ability– to go different angles and
different approaches depending on different situations? Or are there coaches
that can just get away with being the same even-keeled
guy or the same psycho 100%.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
Of the time?

Speaker 1 (03:34):
Well, I think I've evolved. I would put it like this. Look,
Dan is early in his managerial career as a head guy.
I've evolved over the years. I mean, yeah, first go around, fiery,
you know, kicking coolers, doing different things. Obviously had to
manage some big personalities. I mean, Clint and Nico and Raul.

(03:59):
And when do you poke them a little bit? When
do you, you know, you got to put your arm
around other guys. I mean, I think there's a definite
nuance to when you can blow your top and, the
players know you're upset or you're just, you know, screaming
a bunch of loud words and nobody's paying attention.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
Jordan Morris, Christian old Dan got their first starts in
a while. How do you evaluate their returns?

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Good. I mean, Christian lasted 75 minutes. Uh, that was good.
He'll be fit for 90 against the galaxy. Jordan was
an interesting one, Dick, because look, he was pretty hot
with me after the gift at halftime, because, you know,
we had burned a sub, uh, through Kalani going out
in the first half and Jordan he could have played

(04:47):
another 10 you know maybe 15 minutes but I only
had two opportunities left so I knew Jordan was on
the clock and look he had sprinted a lot in
that first half he got in behind a lot I
was actually really pleased with his performance but you know
his sprint distances were creeping up there and so I
had to make a tough decision I had to say

(05:08):
you know Jordan you're going to come out anyway after
eight or ten minutes But I've got to do it
now to save an opportunity, and he was pretty heated
about that.

Speaker 4 (05:16):
Yeah, Brian, I'm going to say this guy's name, and
I have to say it in my Skip Carey voice.
Kalani Kazarianzi went down with an injury in the first half.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
What is his situation?

Speaker 1 (05:27):
His status is okay. He probably missed this next game,
but available for the next. He turned his ankle pretty.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
Good, but.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
He's a tough kid. He's a Washington Husky product. Those guys,
they build them tough down there in Montlake, so I
expect him back pretty soon. The only other injury updates,
if you're going to ask me, is Jackson's a little
ahead of the curve. I think he might be ready
in a couple weeks. He had a longer timeline, but
he's doing okay. Yaimar actually was on the grass today

(05:59):
with his teammates for the warm-up, but still a ways away,
so we're getting healthier.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
All right, you're headed to L.A.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
It's supposed to be 100 degrees tomorrow and a little
bit humid in Los Angeles. Any special prep for your
game on Saturday night for that type of heat? You
usually have it like in Austin.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
Yeah, no, I mean, the heat there is a little
different than Austin because it's a little more humid in
the Midwest. But, yes, Dick, it is going to be hot.
The saving grace, perhaps, perhaps, is that they've got to
fly up to Vancouver on a midweek, play Vancouver on
a Wednesday, come back home and play us on Saturday.

(06:39):
So let's see how much rotation they do. Let's see
which guys they leave at home. And, you know, we'll
be ready for them because, you know, our guys are,
you know, they're fired up. I mean, they've got some
belief still. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (06:52):
How about this Irving Lozano, a.k.a. Chucky Lozano, just added
by the Galaxy. What do you make of this guy
and the problems he provides?

Speaker 1 (07:01):
Well, look, he's a talented player, but they sold Gabriel Peck,
their best player, in my opinion, for like $ 12 million.
But Chucky Lozano is a world-class player. He played in
the biggest leagues in Europe. Good pickup for them. But,
you know, the guy they sold was... speed and left-footed

(07:21):
and crafty. Chucky's just a decent all-around player. But, you know,
still a dangerous team. I mean, we're not looking past him,
that's for sure.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
American cheddar or Swiss on a grilled cheese sandwich?

Speaker 1 (07:35):
Cheddar.

Speaker 4 (07:37):
Correct answer. All right, go get a win this weekend.
We'll talk in a week.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
All right, pal?

Speaker 2 (07:42):
Okay. All right.

Speaker 1 (07:43):
Take care, guys.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
Brian Schmetzer. I don't know why I had that in
my brain.

Speaker 4 (07:46):
I just, for some reason, ever since I said Chuckie Lozano,
I started thinking about grilled cheese sandwiches. I was thinking
about pizza. I had to ask him. Chuckie Cheese, right?
You ever heard of Chuckie Cheese, Jackson, by the way?
How about Showbiz? Remember Showbiz Pizza and Crossroads? Yeah, I
didn't have one by me.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
Oh, God, man.

Speaker 4 (08:02):
Pietro's Pizza, Pizza and Pipes. We just need some of
those old classic pizza joints back.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
All right, we're going to break.

Speaker 4 (08:08):
Larry Stone will join us. We'll ask him, American cheddar
or Swiss on a grilled cheese sandwich next on 93.3 KJRFM.
