it a Duke's night tonight. Reserve your table today at
Duke Safood dot com. Now back to Softy and Dick
on Sports Radio ninety three point three KJRFM.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
All right, big thanks to our friend Julio Rodriguez for
joining us on the radio show. We actually talked to
Julio about four hours ago and said, look, man, we
got Brian Schmetzer on the air five forty five.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
He said, I'll come on, but I ain't going on
after Schmeitzer. No way.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
If I'm coming on, I'm coming on before Schmitzer. I'm
not going to have to follow that guy. No way
could I fill those shoes. So sorry, coach, but Julio
wanted to come on before you, so now we have
you on now.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
So sorry, and.
Speaker 4 (00:41):
He deserves to be on before me. I mean, that's it.
I feel honored that I'm going after Julio. And why
did you? I mean, you guys were talking about drinking
beer before game. No, he's got to focus on the ball.
He's got a hand eye coordination.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
He can Okay, all right, time out.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
You're telling me that you never drank before a game
when you played back in the day.
Speaker 4 (01:00):
Come on, come on, well, yeah, my over thirty Cavern League,
I love this well sponsored. We were sponsored by the
Attic down in Madison Park, and we yeah, we go
have a few beers and play some ball, for sure.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
So what's the hell's the difference between your thirty over
beer league and the Mariners.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
There's no difference.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
For God's sakes, hey, listen, we talked last week about
the trap game potential with Sporting Kansas City being one
of the worst teams in the MLS.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Is a one to one draw? Is that a disappointment
to you in your mind?
Speaker 4 (01:36):
Yeah? I mean we got off to just a crazy
start ross Rocks. You know, leading goalscorer on the squad
gets us a one nothing lead. You know, the next
ten minutes toffee, We weren't just like all over I
don't know, they didn't even touch the ball. And then
we make one mistake, and just one mistake in a game,
(01:57):
they tie it up. They start feeling like I go, okay, well,
you know, maybe we can stay hang with us, and
you know, we pounded them with twenty four shots. I
think our expected goals a two point five or some
somewhere two point seven, but we only scored one and
it's a one to one draw and it's like kissing
(02:18):
your sister.
Speaker 5 (02:19):
Well, that mistake was by Christian rolled on. It was
a hell of a pass if he played for Kansas
City though. I mean he got it right to his
right to his feet. I mean, that's got to be
the worst pass of his career. And you know, just
talk about what what happened there, and what did he
say after the match to you about what happened there.
Speaker 4 (02:36):
Well, he took responsibility to his teammates and that's what's important. Look,
it happens. Look, stuff happens there. You know, Manchester City's
in the race for the Premier League title and they
were at Everton. Their defender did the exact same thing,
passed it right to one of the Everton guys. They drew.
Now Arsenal's in the league. Man it happens in the EPL,
(02:57):
it happens in MLS. Christian's a tough kid mentally, he
snapped out of it. It's like, hey, we've got to
move forward, we've got to play, and you know that
that stuff happens and you can't take it back, and
we're gonna just you know, learn from it. You know,
you's got to have better vision. You know, you's you
got to figure out where the opponents are. But you know,
one mistake cost us.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
Uh So, does he's talk to the guys about it?
Does he step up in the locker room at halftime
speak to his guys about the mistake?
Speaker 3 (03:23):
How does he handle it?
Speaker 4 (03:24):
Yeah? Yeah, he was, he was talking to people at
half time and then after the game. You know, I
did a little summary of what I thought and looking
at him and he's shaking his head. So he's totally
comfortable taking responsibility for it. But like I said, we're
learning from it. We're moving on.
Speaker 5 (03:41):
So you got moving on to Saturday, San Diego at
lumin Does it kind of help when you have a
disappointing draw or a loss? Does it kind of help
motivate for the next game?
Speaker 4 (03:52):
Kind of? I mean I would I would say that's true, dick. Uh.
I think the guys are looking for this this whole week.
I mean we've got a gauntlet of you know, three
games in a week starting with San Diego, who's a
good squad, and you know it's it's going to be tough.
So the guys want to get back right up on
the horse and continue to play well. I mean, look,
(04:13):
we're still fifth in the Supporter Shield, we're fourth in
the West, who got one or two games in hand,
So this three game week's really going to be critical.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Yeah, well, let's talk about what's happening with the San
Diego team. Coach Brian Schmetzer with us on the air,
first place in the West last year and their first
every year, and now they've had a rough second year.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
What are you seeing from San Diego.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
Well, they're still a good team. They still play the
way they want to play. I mean, the coach, mikey Varth,
he's the young guys who he'p learning, you know, the
first year, you know, a sophomore slump, all that sort
of stuff. He's learning. He's still got some good players.
He's dealing with a little bit of injury problems, and
you know, the challenge is he continue to stick with
how he wants to play, like, you know, passing out
(04:56):
of the back. They play out of the back, almost
overplay out of the back. Say, but that's his style
and at some point, you're gonna maybe think about cutting
your losses and suddenly suddenly changing the way you want
to play.
Speaker 5 (05:10):
Let's talk about injuries, coach. Do you think we'll see
Yamar before the World Cup?
Speaker 4 (05:16):
Uh? Dick, I can I can break this bit of
news for you on the show. Look, he had he's
been having regular MRIs on that hamstring and he just
had one yesterday and it is not healed one hundred percent.
There's still got some scar tissue in there. That's not
quite the way the docs and our trainers like it.
(05:39):
So we're probably gonna have Gaymar sit out until after
the World Cup.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Okay, does that change anything for you?
Speaker 2 (05:47):
Guys? Have to make a move, activate somebody, change your offense?
Speaker 4 (05:51):
Nothing, okay, Okay, Alice, the ruled ends been doing well.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Yeah, yeah, how about Russ Snack and Ariola came back
to the bench again down the city.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
Are they ready to start again if you need them.
Speaker 4 (06:01):
Too, well, they're ready to start. We had we had
a lively training session today. You know, to Dick's point,
the guys are sharp in training because they know, you know,
those guys are veteran guys and they weren't in the
starting lineup. Last game, so they went their spots back.
Though training has been good. You know, I got a
good vibe. I got a good vibe from training, and
(06:22):
we should have some strong performances with three games at home.
Speaker 5 (06:26):
Well, coach, you got to be commiserating a little bit
with the fans up north in Vancouver because the white
Caps could be in the very same situation as we
were here in Seattle with the Sonics in two thousand
and eight. So just talk about your feelings on that
whole situation.
Speaker 4 (06:42):
Well, we were gutted when the Sonics left town. I
mean it was like the rug was pulled out of here,
out from under you. You know, Sophie, you talked about
the last segment about you know what it felt like,
you know, losing to the Blue Jays in Game seven.
I mean, those are those are critical moments in anybody's life.
I'm you know, you take, you get something taken away
(07:02):
from you. It's stingsn't hurt. So I feel bad for
the people up in Vancouver. You know, the the white
Caps have been around since nineteen, you know, seventy five
and seventy four, seventy five, and they're proud franchised and
I think you know, geographically it fits really good for
us in Portland and in Vancouver. I think the Cascadia
(07:25):
Cup is certainly an important rivalry in the Northwest. So
it's it's it's big news. We talk about it all
the time. I hope, I hope for the best. I
hope they can find a solution up in Vancouver.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Yeah, no, no doubt.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
Well, look, there's a rivalry, but there's it's a rivalry
that you almost want to have, right with those two
other teams, And there's hatred, there's animosity, but it would
kind of suck for that to go away, no doubt.
All right, man, listen, great stuff, And next time we
hear of a player having a cocktail or two before
a game, we'll be sure and not tell you about it.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
All right. By the way, if.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
You have what about the coach staff's check.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
Before the game, listen, I'll tell you what.
Speaker 4 (08:04):
Man.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
There's been a few games that I've seen you guys, coach,
where I could have sworn you guys were having drinks
before the game.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
I'm kidding. I'm kidding.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
Hey, go get him, Go get him on Saturday. Man,
appreciate this coach.
Speaker 4 (08:19):
All right, all right, take care guys all right.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
Brian Schpittzer with us on the show
