(00:46):
friend Mike Florio, NFL and NBC Pro Football Talk dot Com. Michael,
how are you what's He's a genuine butthole?

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Hey?

Speaker 3 (00:53):
Were you surprised that the Jets went after another defensive
minded head coach and Aaron after whacking Robert Sala, who
was also a defensive minded head coach.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Well, what we often see teams do when they fire
a coach is they look for a new coach who
is the opposite of the guy they had. And here's
the defensive guy who's never been a head coach before.
And that was what they had the last time around.
So yeah, it was kind of surprising. You think they
go offensive, maybe a guy who's been a head coach.
That's just what teams do now, dysfunctional team to do that.

(01:28):
And if the Jets, led by Woody Johnson were able
to overlook that and just get the right guy for
the job, then God love them. But we'll see what happened.
You know, I was talking about this earlier day. The
problem with suggets even when they clean house and bring
in a new coach in a new GM, their fans
expect something big quickly. There's no great period. The bar

(01:49):
is high and that's difficult for any coaching staff, any
front office to live up to. So we'll see how
they they do. But it's not going to be an
easy spot because under Woody Johnson it's never a needy spot.

Speaker 4 (02:02):
More likely or less likely now that Aaron Rodgers stays
in New York.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
I never thought he was coming back, And this is
just I think part of the formality that the new regime,
once they hire a GM, they'll decide to move on,
because really, why would you want the guy whose arrival
was basically the catalysts for everybody else to be fired.
It's time to go in a different direction. It's time
to find somebody else. I don't think he wants to
be there anyway. He was needling Woody Johnson on multiple

(02:28):
occasions on Pat McAfee's show, So I think that it's
just debtson for a divorce, and I think he wants
them to initiate until he can pain himself as a victim.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
Mike, there's a report out from Tim Kawakami that the
Niners have had discussions about bringing on Pete Carroll as
a defensive coordinator. How much teeth do you put to
that report? How much of that do you buy?

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Well, you know they want Robert Sala. That's been out there,
and I think somebody was on Timkollcomy's podcast and said that.
And if they're willing to pay him more than any
other defensive coordinator in the NFL now slaves in play
for the Cowboys, the Jaguars, and the Raiders. But and
and Carrol's in play for the Raiders, and there are

(03:10):
people keeping a close eye on that. And when you
look at the other candidates for the Raiders, beyond Ben Johnson,
who many think they really wanted, Carroll is the one
who stands out because he's got the pedigree, he's got
the experience, and there's an agent an issue in the NFL.
And it would be nice if the Raiders would would
not be like the rest of the herd that always
wants the young coach and and shies away from the

(03:32):
older guy. And as I pointed out yesterday, I mean,
how the gord to Las Vegas. He's a decade younger
than Wayne Newton. What's the problem?

Speaker 4 (03:38):
Yeah, no, no question about it.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
And laughing you're not laugh at that. It's no butthole reference.
But it's still pretty funny.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
Aha.

Speaker 4 (03:49):
He's got to be listening first in order.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
I heard everything you said. Okay, I was just waiting
for something funny. That's funny, Mike.

Speaker 4 (03:56):
I'm in the minority. I'm actually a Seahawk fan that
thinks Brian Shottenheimer did a good job here as the
offensive coordinator. I think he's the best offensive coordinator of
that Pete Carroll had was when he was here, and
now he is the odds on favorite to be the
next head coach of Dallas, though I think that's a
little odd. Why is he such a heavy favorite and
do you think he will be the head coach of Dallas.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
I think they wanted to keep Mike McCarthy on their terms,
short term deal where they could move on from him
after a year or two with no buyout or with
a minimal buyout. So Dak Prescott wants continuity. And you
got it if you make the guy who has been
the offensive coordinator for the past couple of years the
head coach, same offense, same playbook, and Dak gets what

(04:39):
he wants, and then you see if Schottenheimer has it.
But he's been an assistant coach his whole career. He's
fifty one, and he's never been a head coach. He's
never even been mentioned as a serious head coach Candy
and I think he's gotten some perfunctory interviews in the past,
but this would just be odd for a Cowboys team
that loves to create sizzle. Look at this first name
that came out, Deon Sanders, and Jerry Jones knows the

(05:01):
importance of selling his team. This is a tough Saale job.
When Brian Schottenheimer's your next head coach, I can't help
but wonder whether or not he's got something up else,
else up his sleeve. Yeah, but we'll find out. We'll
find out the Shottenheimer's guy. He's got two interviews, and
there aren't a bunch of big names that have been
linked to the job. I just keep one eye, just

(05:22):
cock eyed on Bill Belichick because Jerry said last year
he has no doubt he could coach and coexist with
Bill Belichick. And I think Bill Belichick wants back in
despite anything that his consigli Hairy Mike Lombardi says to
the contrary. And we'll just see if that happens.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
Now, what's going up with Lombardi? Because everybody's got a
beef with Lombardi? Doesn't He work for Belichick now at Carolina,
So he's just kind of as like his bag dad Bob,
isn't he.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Well, it's not that everybody has a beaf with Lombardi,
it's Lombardi has a beef with everybody, and he's denying
reports one at a time. He's called at least three
different reports come sleet falsehoods in recent days. And at
some point, if you're saying that so often, people are
going to think that you're the one who isn't telling

(06:08):
the truth. And the reality is I believe I can't
prove this, but I believe that Bill Belichick would love
to come back to the NFL. And the buyout clause
it's in the contract that as if last week he
hadn't signed. That says everything we need to know about
whether or not he's in play. If he wants to
calm the nerves in North Carolina, nerves that go all

(06:29):
the way up to the commission of the ACC all
he's got to do is remove the buy out and
sign the contract. If you take out the buyout, he
ain't going anywhere. You could just have no buyout through
the first year of the deal, full commitment. There's no
way out. This is my job. But that hasn't happened,
and until it happens, I think there's a possibility goes
to the NFL. And I'm intrigued by, for example, the
decision of the Jaguars late than you better late than never.

(06:54):
But to move on from GM Trent Balk that opens
up a spot where Belichick could go in and take
over if Shot would be inclined to hire Mike.

Speaker 4 (07:03):
Kansas City in their last ten playoff games has had
fewer penalties and fewer penalty yards than the team against them.
Is that because they're simply a more disciplined football team,
or because of you know what? People are chirping out
there they get all the calls.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
Well, here's how I look at it. First of all,
I don't believe NFL games are scripted or rigged, because
primarily I don't think the NFL is competent enough to
pull it off. They couldn't keep it quiet. People would know,
people would talk anonymously or otherwise it would bother someone
and they would say something. I think it's just a
situation where there's inconfidence. And I also think that because

(07:41):
the NFL has torn down the firewall between business considerations
and integrity of the game, I think some of these
officials realize it's good for business, you know, if all
they're talking about is ratings, and the chiefs are the
ones that are delivering the raids and that's all you're
hearing about. Ratings, ratings, ratings, ratings lead the money. At
some level, it's going to cause you to act on

(08:03):
that subconsciously. If that's all you're hearing about. The officials
should be walled off from any of that. The officiating
department should be walled off from any of that. They
shouldn't be thinking about what's good for the business. It's
good for the business. It's difficult, right. I think that's
how it can manifest itself. So it's not some grand conspiracy.
It's subconscious bias that is influenced by their knowledge that

(08:24):
it's good for the league. If the Chiefs and other
star quarterbacks with big followings win games and pursue championships,
more likely to tune in. And I think it becomes
exacerbated by the fact that the wildcard rounds down nine
and a half percent from last year, the divisional rounds
down eight and a half percent. They got to pump
this thing up. They got to get my homes in
the Super Bowl. Although the other side of the coin

(08:46):
could be if there's Chiefs fatigue and then the subconscious messages,
we got to get the Chiefs out of here. We
got to have somebody else pursuing a championship regardless. I
think that's where it comes from. It's subconscious bias, driven
by what's good for the business, what the officials perceived
to be good for the.

Speaker 3 (09:03):
Business, Mike, before you go the Mark Andrews drop two
point conversion. If he catches that and the Ravens win
the game, what does that mean from Lamar Jackson's legacy
and what did the drop mean to his legacy, if
anything at all?

Speaker 2 (09:16):
In your mind, Well, here's the reality. With each passing year,
the Lamar Jackson doesn't make it to the super Bowl,
there's going to be more pressure on him the next
time around to get to the super Bowl. Narratives become
reinforced or debunked. And he said it himself a couple
of weeks ago. Is they were getting ready for the

(09:37):
wildcard game against the Steelers. He gets antsy, he gets anxious,
he gets nervous, he's aware. You know, the consequences are different.
You lose the regular season game, you had another train
on the tracks in six days, four days, five days, whatever.
You lose the postseason game, you're done. And I think
it just becomes more and more pressure until he finally
does it, and I'm not saying he can't, but it

(09:58):
gets harder each year. It doesn't get easier, and he's
working against that history that keeps growing of failure. That's
where it becomes a challenge. I think what they need
to do during the season next year at the trade deadline,
they need to forget about how they play the compensatory
draft pick game, and they have a bunch of value
in building for the future. They got to say the
hell with the future. We're going to go all in.

(10:18):
We're going to get the one guy that we need,
the big name, not some role player. We'll look for
a big name who's available. We're getting him on the
team and we're going all in and we're going to
try to win it all this year.

Speaker 3 (10:28):
Yeah, Mike, I really want you to know how much
we appreciate having you on and every week it's a
pleasure to talk to you.

Speaker 2 (10:33):

Speaker 3 (10:35):

hockey game? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (10:39):
Tuesday night, want to come.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
I saw something where where somebody put nachos out on
the ice. Do you have an alibi for that? Because
that seems like something you would do.

Speaker 3 (10:48):
I mean no, but it sounds like a hell of
an idea. Are you kidding me? I'm all over it,
my god, Yes, I'm a fan of I might do
that on Tuesday night, So watch for me on Sports
Centers Top ten. All right, Mike, you're the man, buddy,
