Can you feel it? Now?
Speaker 3 (02:22):
This is softy intent.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
I'm a fresher on our buddy Mitchell bly here on
the radio show today because Mitchell Bli is stepping in
for Jackson Felts.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
It's a very very very thankless gait.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
We all know that filling in for him, working for
us on this radio show.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
So far, mistake free, Mitch? About that?
Speaker 2 (02:39):
That puts your hands together. Let's stake free, Mitch. Well,
if he keeps being mistake free, he will be mistake free, Mitch.
If he makes a mistake, it's more on Mitch. All right,
So what will we have by seven o'clock tonight? And
do we allow the guy a little bit of wiggle
room maybe a mistake or two, or do we want
perfection between now and seven o'clock.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
You know, he's in the first inning right now.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
He struck out the first batter, that's right, so he's
he just plunked the second guy.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
He's a third inning in.
Speaker 5 (03:06):
I think I think each hour we should give him
a grade three innings, all right?
Speaker 3 (03:11):
And what his what his you know line is?
Speaker 2 (03:14):
That's right, that's right, all right? Every hour after each
hour we'll check in. We'll go to the skybox, go
to New York and we'll get the uh, we'll get
the take from the analyst from the studio and they'll
they'll weigh in on Mitch Bla and his his performance
so far. I expect the quality start up in for
Jackson Felts well, you know with the old Bill James
quality starts six innings, three runs. If you can just
keep us in there and give us a chance to
(03:36):
win the game, that's all we're asking for by the
time we get to six pm. So mistake free Mitch
or more on Mitch? Which one will it be by
seven o'clock tonight? No pressure on your pal in for
Jackson felt who has the day off today.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
He's back on Monday.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
So I just put a little bit of a post
on X here Dick and Mike Florio Uh will join
us on the radio show.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
Is it is it butthole? Or is it is it Anus?
Speaker 4 (03:57):
Now?
Speaker 3 (03:58):
What was this?
Speaker 4 (03:58):
No?
Speaker 3 (03:59):
Less? Sphincter?
Speaker 2 (04:01):
Yes, sphincter. He'll join us, coming up into like five
minutes on the air. We'll get Mike's take on the
Pete Carroll conversation yesterday.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
Have you heard the Pete Carroll conversation yet? From pieces?
Not in its entirety?
Speaker 2 (04:13):
Well, we're gonna play the whole damn thing at six pm,
all right, because it's too much radio gold to just
not give it to you again. I know you've heard
bits and pieces on the air so far. But Pete
Carol with us yesterday letting the cat out of the
bag that he's going to be teaching a class at
USC next spring.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
How about that? What's up? Guys?
Speaker 5 (04:31):
How are you? Can you imagine? Is it going to
be entitled always Compete? You always compete?
Speaker 4 (04:36):
One?
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Can you imagine walking into a classroom and seeing Pete
freaking Carol as your teacher?
Speaker 3 (04:44):
Oh my god, so he's doing We may have to
enroll just so we can watch him teach. I wonder
if you let us sit in there. We know somebody
who's got some pull.
Speaker 5 (04:54):
We do, because I was going to say a class
at USC will cost you multiple thousands of dollars.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Well, I think I think we should be able to observe.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Right, we should call Jen and let her know that
we want to go down to LA and we want
to watch Pete Carroll work and then get some homework.
All right, we want to get Peek Carroll. We want
to watch that's been on there forever. I was waiting
for the right time, and today was the right time. Anyway, Well,
replay that for you at six pm. I'm sure we'll
talk to Mike Florio about that. Mike was gracious enough
(05:23):
on his website to do an actual story based on
the interview with the full credit for us, by the way,
which is very nice to him, on his highly visited
website Pro Football Talk dot com. But I just put
a little bit of a post on X and I
was gonna say a poll, but it's not really a
pole or I've just got to be either a a
complete hot mess or be just a total emotional psychopath here,
(05:47):
because I just I can't bring myself to admit Dick
that the Mariner season's over.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
I just can't do it. You win the night you're
four games back.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
Yeah, I mean bigger mountains have been climbed by baseball
teams with thirty four to thirty five games left to go. Well,
card is starting to become problematic. There's a lot of
teams in there. You're six and a half games out
right now. But look, man, and I realize, and I've
said this before, that when the schedule, excuse me, when
you're playing bad baseball. It doesn't matter what the schedule is. Like,
bad baseball is bad baseball no matter who you're playing.
(06:19):
But if they can just find a way to have
a ounce of fight in them in the final thirty
five games of the year. They got the Giants, who
are mediocre, Tampa Bay, the Angels, the A's, the Cardinals.
These are not great baseball teams. Meantime, the Astros starting
(06:40):
tomorrow have Baltimore, Philadelphia and Kansas City. Would it stunned
the hell out of you if we woke up in
ten days from now and the Mariners were a couple
of games out of first place.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
A couple No, I would be stunned if they were
in first today. But if you're a couple of games out,
it's not over yet.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
No, A lot of people want to see a change
of manager, to find a way to write the show.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
And all I wanted was them to just, you know,
hold serve, right.
Speaker 5 (07:06):
Can they just stay with Houston until everybody got back
JP Crawford, Julio Rodriguez. I mean, Julio is still not himself.
JP Crawford isn't back yet. And they couldn't even do that.
And that's the thing. And you know me, I've been
in twenty one, twenty two, and twenty three. I was
as optimistic about this baseball team coming back.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
As any voice on this station.
Speaker 5 (07:26):
I just haven't felt it this year because I've just
seen too much of this baseball team that leads me
the other directly.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
I want you to feel it again.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
Let's discuss that coming up at twenty eight after the hour,
Mike Florio joins us.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
Right now, it's time for a.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
Weekly conversation with Pro Football Talks Mike Florio, brought to
you by Simply Seattle.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
Tired of buying and repping the.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
Same old Seattle sports gear everyone else has for the
best Storm, Seahawks, Mariners, Kraken Rainiers, Sounders, and not to mention,
the largest sonics collection in the world. Check out simply
Seattle dot com now with Mike Florio.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
Here's Softy in.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
Dick thet all right by the way, be sure and
check out the sale gating opportunity. Simply Seattle apparently is
making so much money hand over fist. They're getting a
yacht before the Weaver State game and they want you
to be a part of it. Many jump on their
Instagram page, the Twitter account at simply Seattle and check
out more. Some brand new husky lids, as the kids
(08:21):
like to say, that's code for hacks for old guys
like us are on the website right now. Be sure
and use code KJR fifteen for fifteen percent of anything
on the website at simply Seattle dot com. I can
hear him just getting anxious. He wants to be on
the air and be done with us as soon as possible.
Our friend, Mike Florio, how are you, pelle.
Speaker 7 (08:38):
You know the fact that the sponsor can afford a
yacht does nothing to diminish my request for a raise.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Actually enhance it. I believe it was donated by somebody
richer than me.
Speaker 4 (08:48):
Okay, yeah, okay.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
I'm checking on it. What do you want me to do? Okay?
Speaker 2 (08:53):
You know what, Hey, if somebody has to get laid
off to give you a raise, how would you feel
about that?
Speaker 4 (08:59):
I have no problem with that.
Speaker 5 (09:00):
Okay, that's called that's called the NFL quarterback. That's what
NFL quarterbacks.
Speaker 6 (09:04):
Who it is, that's who it is?
Speaker 4 (09:06):
All right?
Speaker 6 (09:07):
If it's you, I have no problem with good. All right.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
Well I just got fired, so you can have your
low raise?
Speaker 4 (09:12):
All right?
Speaker 2 (09:12):
How does that make you feel? I hope you can
sleep at night. Well, Pete Carroll was on with us yesterday.
Speaker 4 (09:18):
Sleep night, sleep and night with my shut.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
Good for you, it'd be weird to do the opposite.
Pete Carroll was with us yesterday on the show. He
did a nice little piece on that for the website,
So thank you for that. Yeah, what'd you make of
the conversation with him? And how how surprised were you
to hear that he's going to just start teaching at
USC and looks like his football coaching career is behind
him now.
Speaker 7 (09:39):
Age discrimination is very real in the National Football League.
It rarely becomes an issue, coaches rarely do anything about it.
Speaker 6 (09:47):
Scouts have tried in the past.
Speaker 7 (09:48):
Wade Phillips has sounded off about his age keeping him
out of the NFL as even a coordinator. Teams like
to go young and fresh, and there's also a budgetary
element that goes.
Speaker 6 (09:58):
Into that as well.
Speaker 7 (09:59):
The younger the coach, the more inexperienced the coach, the
cheaper the coach is going to be. So I'd like
to think there'll be a team out there that will
take a serious look at a guy who has done
a lot of great things as an NFL head coach
with Seattle Seahawks fourteen years, two super Bowls, one win,
almost perennial playoffs, and just the way he could give
a team a kick in the butt. I look at
(10:19):
Bill Belichick, who's not that much younger than Carol for him,
ages and an issue for him, the question is who's
going to give him keys.
Speaker 4 (10:27):
To the team. And if they don't.
Speaker 6 (10:28):
Give the keys to the team, can they trust them
not to come in and take over.
Speaker 4 (10:31):
They don't mention that Belichick's a little too old.
Speaker 7 (10:34):
So Pete is very energetic and youthful, and I think
he'd be a great coach if somebody gave him a
chance next year and I hope that he gets a
fair shot, regardless of the fact that he turned seventy
three in a few weeks.
Speaker 5 (10:44):
Mike, I'm trying to figure out our rivals down in
the Bay Area. Do you see a San Francisco team
as one still very much in their window or a
team that might be slipping. You got issues with Trent
Williams and issues with Brandon Aiyuk, You've got injuries on
the offensive line. Which direction do you think this football
team is headed this year?
Speaker 7 (11:03):
I still think when it's time to play games with
the coaching staff that they have Kal Shanahan's ability to
draw great offensive plays and call them at the right time.
That gives the forty nine ers an advantage when it
comes to the question whether or not they're going to
be competitive. But these issues can pile up. And the
one thing that I'm really watching because I think they'll
get I Youth done. At this point it seems too
(11:24):
late to trade him to Pittsburgh and get him ready
to go and get real value out of.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
Him this year.
Speaker 7 (11:28):
I think they'll get something done, just like I think
the Cowboys get something done.
Speaker 6 (11:31):
With Ceedee Lamb and the Bengals get something done with Jamar.
Speaker 7 (11:33):
Chase, but at some point it starts to feel like
the windows closing on this group of forty nine. Is
The question is can they reload with backups and draft
picks that they develop, just like they developed the Deebo
Samuels and the.
Speaker 4 (11:46):
George Kittles of the world. And the other thing I'm
really curious about.
Speaker 7 (11:49):
How good is Brock Purdy and is Brock Purty going
to try to be more than what he is. He's
a great system quarterback and that's not an insult. It
seems like he's trying to will himself into franchise quarterback.
He hadn't ugly played the other the night where he
rolled left and threw it back across his body. He's
not good enough to get away with that. He shouldn't
try to be Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow.
(12:09):
He just needs to be the best Brock Perdy he
can be, yeah, and run the system as well as
he can and not try to elevate to some higher
level as he's in the year.
Speaker 4 (12:18):
That's going to lay the foundation for his next contract.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
Mike Florio with US courtesy is simply Seattle Dot com
Russell Wilson says he expects to play Saturday in the
preseason finale against Detroit. Is that because he feels like
he is legitimately getting pushed a little bit by Justin
Fields and wants to go out there and wrap up
this gig. Would you be surprised if anybody besides Russell
(12:42):
Wilson starts the opener for Pittsburgh.
Speaker 4 (12:45):
Preseason can be very misleading.
Speaker 7 (12:46):
Last year, Kenny Pickett looked like he was ready to
take a step.
Speaker 4 (12:49):
They did some things in the preseason.
Speaker 7 (12:51):
It created that very fair impression, and then the regular
season came along and Kenny Pickett did not take a step.
If anything, he took a step backward. What I see
now when I watched Russell Wilson, I look at is
he Seahawks Russ or is he Broncos Russ? And on
Saturday Night he looked like Denver russ sputtery, just not
really with the electricity in his like the you're let
(13:13):
me putting Justin Fields And he's exactly what you need,
especially if you're gonna have issues with your offensive line.
If Jalen Warren the very good running back, he's got
more burst and explosiveness than Naja Harris. If he's going
to miss time into the regular season, I think you
have to go with Justin Fields. Now, look, Mike tom
was gonna do what Mike Tomlin does, But man, I
feel like that offense is more exciting and edge of
(13:35):
the seat with Justin Fields out there than it is.
Speaker 4 (13:38):
With Russell Wilson.
Speaker 6 (13:40):
And who knows what.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
Mike Tomlin's gonna do, but I think Steelers fans are
going to be.
Speaker 7 (13:45):
Clamoring for Justin Fields if Russell Wilson looks in week
one or two like he looked in the preseason game
against the Bills.
Speaker 5 (13:53):
Mike, your take on to taking a blowtorch to Brian Floores?
And do you believe like Steven A. Smith is alleging
that Dan Levittard was interviewing him and Tua were in
cahoots on making sure the topic of Brian Flores came
up in the interview.
Speaker 4 (14:08):
Well, now, cahoots is a broad term.
Speaker 7 (14:12):
Did Tula go to Dan Levittard and say make sure
you asked me about Flores?
Speaker 4 (14:17):
Did Levitard helped to ahead of time you're.
Speaker 6 (14:19):
Gonna ask about Flores?
Speaker 7 (14:20):
I don't care the words came out and the first
chunk of it where Tua said that basically he was
beaten down by being told you suck, you don't belong here,
somebody else should be here. That was back when Flores
was fixated on trading for Deshaun Watson, and it really
did mentally and emotionally beat down Tuatanzabailoa that part.
Speaker 6 (14:41):
Look, I wasn't.
Speaker 4 (14:43):
Surprised by it, because that is what happened.
Speaker 7 (14:45):
That was the way that Brian Flores coached him, and
it didn't work, and Flora should have tried something different
to get the most out of Tua.
Speaker 4 (14:50):
I don't know what he wanted to get the most
out of two. I think he wanted to get rid
of Tua.
Speaker 7 (14:54):
But when Tua those with the he's a terrible person man,
that felt like it got punch. And I was very
impressed by how Flora has handled himself yesterday. We didn't
get coach speak, we didn't get cliched, We got a real, raw,
authentic reaction to being verbally attacked the way he was
by Tua. And I really wonder why now does Tua
(15:15):
feel emboldened to do this because he's gotten his long
term contract. Is he going to go settle scores. Now,
you know there's a certain amount of security that comes
with that deal, and you can say things and do
things that you couldn't say and do before you signed
that contract. And I just wonder whether this is a
blip or whether we're going to see Tua with more
attacks like this on people he believes wronged in in
(15:37):
the past.
Speaker 2 (15:37):
Yeah, Mike Florio's with us. Mike, who do you have
on your first NFL starting quarterback to be benched list?
Speaker 3 (15:44):
And is it Daniel Jones?
Speaker 4 (15:47):
It could be Daniel Jones, He could be Gardner Minshew.
Speaker 7 (15:49):
You know the thing about a quarterback competition where the
winner arguably should be none of the above. The guy
who wins the job is the guy who wins the
right to be the first one bench So if the
Raiders struggle early on, I could see them pivoting back
to Aidan O'Connell just to see what O'Connell can do
and try to.
Speaker 4 (16:05):
Get a lift.
Speaker 6 (16:06):
Daniel Jones is not.
Speaker 7 (16:07):
Looking very good at play was very Carson wentzish where
he threw the ball when he was being tackled in
the end zone out of the flat was intercepted for
a pick sick.
Speaker 4 (16:16):
They had another interception where he put bad place and on.
Speaker 7 (16:18):
The ball and he's underseas. And I go back to
the offseason hard Knocks, where the Giants I think exposed
way too much to the world regarding what they think
about certain players. They were too candid about what they
think about dus Justin Daniel Jones and their efforts to
draft another quarterback, where there's trading up for Jadan Daniels
trading up for Drake may I think that there are
(16:39):
parallels we can draw between that and the two. A
situation when your team is not one hundred percent behind you,
when you feel like they don't believe in you, at
a certain point, you don't believe in yourself.
Speaker 5 (16:53):
Mike, you don't normally see a player demanding a trade
before he ever plays a game with the team. But
that's what's going on with a Son Reddick and the Jets.
What's the latest on that? And do you think the
Bears end up with him? That's being flown around?
Speaker 7 (17:05):
Well, the Bears tried to get Matthew Judon, who was
traded from the Patriots to the Falcons last week, So
you know, I don't know whether the Jets mean that
when they say we're not going to trade him. The
practical effect of telling the worlds you're not going to
trade him is you're making sure everyone knows there's value
in making a phone call and making an offer. The
bottom line with this is, when you are dealing with
(17:26):
a guy that wants a new contract, you better be
damn sure he's going to show up. You better be
damn sure he's going to be happy, or ideally, just
give him.
Speaker 4 (17:34):
The new contract on the way through the door.
Speaker 7 (17:36):
The Falcons got lucky with Judon because Judon just kind
of accepts his situation.
Speaker 4 (17:40):
He's willing to pay play for six.
Speaker 6 (17:41):
And a half million, even though he clearly wants a
new deal. He says he's got to prove himself.
Speaker 7 (17:45):
Reddick wants the contract. Then, from his perspective, it's not
enough for the Eagles to dump him onto someone else.
He still wants a new contract. The Jets I think
miscalculated here, and now both sides are dug in. I
think at some point Reddick shows up, because when you're
talking about fourteen point twenty five million, you divide that
by eighteen, that's.
Speaker 6 (18:03):
How much he's losing in game checks.
Speaker 4 (18:04):
Remember the year camp.
Speaker 7 (18:05):
Chancellor held out hit a couple of those game checks,
and all of a sudden, you feel very differently about
the contract that you don't like because those checks are
disappearing in very large chunks every seven days.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
Well, before you go, Mike Florio's with us, Dick just
asked you about some of the uncertainty happening in Santa Clara.
Matt Stafford's been banged up a little bit this camp
down there in LA.
Speaker 3 (18:28):
Who do you think wins the NFC West?
Speaker 4 (18:32):
Yeah, Hey, I don't know.
Speaker 7 (18:33):
I'm going to delay my predictions as long as I
possibly can. The forty nine ers have been the class
of that division in recent years, despite the fact that
the Rams won the Super Bowl a few years ago.
But I think that it's more open than it's been
in recent years, and a lot of it is here
come down to injury. You know, we spend the whole
offseason trying to figure out how teams are going to look,
(18:55):
what new players are going to make a difference, where
teams are better, where teams are worse. And the one
thing that we can never predict with any certainty of
the impact of injury because we know they're going to happen.
We just don't know who they're gonna happen to and when.
And it's bad form to start saying, well, it's sell
and so's tears an ac al or if this guy
blows out in the Chilles.
Speaker 3 (19:12):
But we thought last year.
Speaker 7 (19:13):
Four plays, end of the season, Aaron Rodgers, there he goes,
and there.
Speaker 6 (19:16):
Goes the Jets hopes with him. So there's gonna be
injuries that change everything. There's gonna be teams that have
rash of injuries.
Speaker 4 (19:23):
Can they overcome it?
Speaker 7 (19:24):
Does that create an opening for the teams that stay
healthy to put themselves in position to win it. That's
really the key, and that's the fun of it.
Speaker 4 (19:31):
And it's not fun to wait for injuries.
Speaker 7 (19:33):
It's just fun to play out the games and live
through the week by week drama and see who emerges
at the end.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
All right, I'll delay your rais and until you give
us your predictions for the upcoming season, because Mike, life
is more than about money.
Speaker 3 (19:44):
It's about friendships. And you're my friend and that makes
you a very rich man.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
God if you say so, see you man talking next week,
Mike Florio with us.
