up a Bears fans the time of the age before
the Seahawks started, So between the packers of the Bears
seems sacrilegious their home field, so centerfield does.

Doesn't it a wild situation there in Chicago for sure.
Chicago not one of the host cities for the World Cup. Strangely,
show it seems like that, you know, great American city
would be perfect for a World Cup, but not hosting
any games unlike us. Pete, we have a games here.
We have six World Cup games at Seattle Stadium.

think the electricity for this event, you know, it was

I have felt this energy definitely picking up over the
last couple of weeks.

You can walk by anybody who's got a soccer jersey
on or might look like they're from another country and
say you fired about the World Cup if you.

I'm on the campus at Seattle University, and anytime I
walk by somebody that I can tell that either accent
they're not from the last I say you fired U
about the World Cup, and the response is a lot
of excitement, a lot of enthusiasm. I remember ninety four
really well, and I just went to a couple of

games there. So I think I think our city is
going to see something really fun.

I'm really hopeful for that. I agree the energy is building.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
Once we get going, when we have these six games,
it'll be fascinating you see how it evolves and how
it grows, especially as we host a thirty two round
in a round of six teams, so it'll be a
lot of I'm excited to be around it.

Yeah, it certainly will be.

And we're going to have those broadcasts, especially for the
United States games all here on ninety three point three KJRFM,
starting with that Paraguay game coming up. And I think, Pete,
that's where I want to start with you, after just
the initial thoughts on the event. Is the United States
national team? This is supposed to be Pete the Golden generation,
Christian Polisic the star. Yeah, Weston McKinney, you got Tim Way,

a lot of big star power on this team. The
big question I think for your average Joe driving down
I five right now is yeah, but is this United
States team actually going to do something in this tournament?
Speaker 4 (04:08):
You know what?
Speaker 1 (04:09):
I guess, what is Pete? The ceiling of this national
team for this year?
Speaker 2 (04:14):
I watched the Senegal game on the May thirty first.
I think it was I'm looking forward to tomorrow's game
with Germany. Senegal is probably the best team on the
African continent.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
So it was three to two.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
We went up two zero, two goals in the first
twenty minutes, Christian Pulisik, who have a lot of pressure
on him. And by the way you talk about this
golden era for the players, I think they feel it tremendously.
But I've also seen since they picked the team a
little bit of a different kind of mindset. In other words,
I think there's a little bit of now we can
focus on playing. We don't have to worry about making

mistakes that would cost us a position on the team.
So the in the game against Senegal, Death played a
really good ball into Pulisic and he got down the
line and got it back. Death made a great run,
first time finish, good cross, and then not too long
after that, Pappy played a great ball in behind. Polistic
(05:14):
made a terrific run, got a totally perfectly way to
pass and slipped it past the oncoming goalkeeper, just one
touch past him and one touch, next touch into the
back of the net. Then right before the half, two
three minutes to go, we gave ball away in the
middle of the park and four seconds later, six seconds later,
Manny puts it in the back of the net for

sind a goal. That's how dangerous any of these World
Cup teams are going to face. Can be you make
a mistake, you get punished for it, right. And the
second goal that tied the game at two to two
in the second half was a giveaway ball at the
back and unfortunately for a goalkeeper had played a total
of four minutes from the US, he had just subbed
in at halftime, he got caught. Brady got caught on
(05:58):
the coming out and and so that just lifted it
over him. Fortunately, Holigan got a goal. He also had
a goal called back, and they were very good goals.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
So we scored.

I think we scored really four good goals and called
back for offside fair enough.

But we cannot make mistakes.

But I did see a different level of sort of
composure and grant the response from politic he's under in
my opinion, I don't think he can get away from it.
It's self induced as well. He's put a lot of
pressure on himself and everyone else. You know, everybody said
he was in a slump. And I think before the game,
Christopher Sullivan, I think, was one of the announcers and

he said, hey, I got total faith in this guy.
And he did exactly what he said and he came
out great. His response from scoring the goal he went
to the corner flag slid and I mean he was
screaming with joy, and then as soon and he was
off the pitch, and then as.

Soon as he came back.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
I love this as a coach comes back on the field,
total stone face. Let's get back to business. We didn't
have another one. So I think for Pocatino, the coach Mauricio,
I think he's going to have to make sure.

I don't think you have to tell him too much,
but I think, hey.

If we're up to nothing and to zero and there's
three minutes to go and a half, think of it
as killing the clock for that if you want the corners.
I mean, there's eight games that have to be played
to win the World Cup. We've added teams from thirty
two to forty eight. You really have to manage every
single game. And it's eight games in thirty nine days.

Doing the math at home, that's eight days, eight point
four on five days, you have a game with travel right,
and different time zones possibly for sure different time zones.
So management is going to be really important. After seeing
Senegal and I'm really excited to see the Germany game tomorrow.
I see the lineup, I feel like Senegal. I kind

of feel like, Okay, I think we could advance. I
think we get through the first round, and any team
that gets hot in the World Cup has a terrific chance.

You get a little momentum on your side, and now
you start to roll and you start to believe, right.
So it's a really fascinating thing because these guys all
play on top clubs around the world and then they
have to come together and they got to put it
together and it's do or die.

Well, they if they win the group over Australia and
Paraguay and Turkey and then they win their first knockout
round game, they would actually play a round of sixteen
game here in Seattle against what could be Belgium. So
that could be a tremendous opportunity for this team. You
mentioned the game against Germany, the friendly warm up game

coming up tomorrow, and I mean, we say friendly, but
it's not going to be friendly in that adjective nature.
It's going to be a very intense game. We're going
to have the game right here eleven thirty tomorrow morning
on ninety three point three KJRFM. And you know, Anders
and I were talking earlier today Pete about that game,
and you the same question that that we were talking
about is what do you need to see from the

United States in that game tomorrow morning.

Well, the first thing that comes to mind is a shutout,
because we've had a difficult time with that. If we
can replicate the goals that we were getting in the
in the in Senegal game, I think that would be phenomenal.
But I think restarts are going to be important. We
had a terrific restart to our Christian roll Dawn on

a corner kick in the second half. I think, you know,
it really has to be buttoned out, So restarts are
going to be important. Shut Out, I think the shutout
is the most important thing, especially against a team like Germany.
I mean, that's a team with the member of World
Cup trophies in their trophy case, so this will be
a big one.

I'm curious.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
I was going to sub I don't think it's going
to be as wholesale as it was against Syenegal had
a lot of changes at halftime and second half, So yeah,
to me, shutout and goals in our flank play, especially
on the left hand side, was really good. So I'd
like to see more of that. I like to see
him be able to the goals. The goals that we

scored against Senegal, I think go in anywhere in the world,
so we need more of those. But the shutout's going
to not make mistakes. I think, if I'm boiling down,
don't make mistakes. Get to shut out, Pete.

here in the United States, is just overall tournament thoughts.
Is we look at a tournament where Argentina is the
defending champions. Messi may still be the goat, but is
he the best player in this tournament? Probably not. You
have lamin Ya Mal with Spain, they may be the favorites.
Argentina is still there. France obviously now has gone to

back to back World Cup finals, winning in eighteen, losing
in twenty two. If you have a couple favorites in
this tournament, you know, obviously we don't know how this
bracket's gonna shake out, and you know group stage finishes,
could you know, send teams one way or another way?
Speaker 4 (11:29):
But who are your favorites to take this thing home?
Speaker 2 (11:33):
Well, if I'm going favorites, I know Spain is considered
the favorite, but I like France and I would put
Spain second.
Speaker 3 (11:40):
Argentina and you just can't count Messi out.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
You know, he had so much pressure because he didn't
have a World Cup and then he got it in
twenty twenty two. There's England. I'm my parents. My mom
was Manchester, my dad was bath I'm on the one
board in the US, so I have an affinity for England.
You know, Kaying Ryan Bellingham soccer. I'd love to see
them Pickford.

I liked everybody.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Everybody's got to replay their very best for this one.
But there's some fun stories to me right. So in
Bombay's playing his second World Cup. He's been in two finals,
lost the last one on pks. He is twenty seven
years old. If he wins it, now he has two
World Cups at thirty one. If he wins it, he
would be the only other player in the history of
the game to have three World Cups. With Pele, that'd

be pretty awesome, right, And then Messi could win back
to back World Cups. That would be the first time
that's happened since fifty eight sixty two again with Pla
with his Brazil team, right, And although you know he's
kind of funny. I think of it as like a
high school alumni game. He doesn't really have to defend, right,

But when a guy doesn't have to defend, he's a
lot closer to the goal. And he's a competitor. But
he's forty one now, right, so he's a poacher. Could
he get on a roll down? These going to carry
his team? But you know Argentina, Messi, Martinez, Albarez de Paul,
that's a very good group of players, and Yet and Bobby.

So if I got a favorite, I think it's France.

I love their coach.

He won a World Cup as a player, right, and
and so i'd say France be thrilled for Argentina. I'd
be more thrilled for England. How about that?

and I mean, my goodness, England's been been waiting for
quite a long time. They always say it's coming home,
and it's now, it's now. It's now become almost a
running joke that it's never coming home. But they've had
probably one of their best shots to win it all
in a long long time. So there we go. Well,
we'll see how this thing breaks down. Excited to have you,

The other thing, too, further than just the national team
here in the United States, is just overall tournament thoughts.
Is we look at a tournament where Argentina is the
defending champions. Messi may still be the goat, but is
he the best player in this tournament? Probably not. You
have lamin Ya Mal with Spain, they may be the favorites.
Argentina is still there. France obviously now has gone to

back to back World Cup finals, winning in eighteen, losing
in twenty two. If you have a couple favorites in
this tournament, you know, obviously we don't know how this
bracket's gonna shake out, and you know group stage finishes,
could you know, send teams one way or another way?
Speaker 4 (11:29):
But who are your favorites to take this thing home?
Speaker 2 (11:33):
Well, if I'm going favorites, I know Spain is considered
the favorite, but I like France and I would put
Spain second.
Speaker 3 (11:40):
Argentina and you just can't count Messi out.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
You know, he had so much pressure because he didn't
have a World Cup and then he got it in
twenty twenty two. There's England. I'm my parents. My mom
was Manchester, my dad was bath I'm on the one
board in the US, so I have an affinity for England.
You know, Kaying Ryan Bellingham soccer. I'd love to see
them Pickford.
Speaker 3 (12:03):
I liked everybody.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Everybody's got to replay their very best for this one.
But there's some fun stories to me right. So in
Bombay's playing his second World Cup. He's been in two finals,
lost the last one on pks. He is twenty seven
years old. If he wins it, now he has two
World Cups at thirty one. If he wins it, he
would be the only other player in the history of
the game to have three World Cups. With Pele, that'd

be pretty awesome, right, And then Messi could win back
to back World Cups. That would be the first time
that's happened since fifty eight sixty two again with Pla
with his Brazil team, right, And although you know he's
kind of funny. I think of it as like a
high school alumni game. He doesn't really have to defend, right,

But when a guy doesn't have to defend, he's a
lot closer to the goal. And he's a competitor. But
he's forty one now, right, so he's a poacher. Could
he get on a roll down? These going to carry
his team? But you know Argentina, Messi, Martinez, Albarez de Paul,
that's a very good group of players, and Yet and Bobby.

So if I got a favorite, I think it's France.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
I love their coach.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
He won a World Cup as a player, right, and
and so i'd say France be thrilled for Argentina. I'd
be more thrilled for England. How about that?
Speaker 3 (13:28):
Yeah?

No, I mean you just named it big favorites there,
and I mean, my goodness, England's been been waiting for
quite a long time. They always say it's coming home,
and it's now, it's now. It's now become almost a
running joke that it's never coming home. But they've had
probably one of their best shots to win it all
in a long long time. So there we go. Well,
we'll see how this thing breaks down. Excited to have you,
