Speaker 1 (00:00):
Back to Sudi and Dick at the Virginia Mason Athletics
Center and our special coverage of Seahawks training camp, brought
to you by the Boweling Classic on Sports Radio ninety
three foot three kJ r FM.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
We're back on a beautiful Monday afternoon, live from the
Virginia Mason Athletic Center right here on ninety three to
three KJR FM. It's hot outside, but this guy, it's
not hot for this guy. Where this guy's from from Texas,
this is nothing.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
It's like a tropical paradise right for this guy.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Byron Murphy with us on the air, Seahawk defensive tackle,
How are you, man.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
I'm good man, good to see you. Appreciate you coming out.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Are you ready for this whole preseason thing to start
and then be over with already, by the way, because
I certainly am.

Speaker 4 (00:43):
I'm ready, man, I'm just ready for the season right now.
I'm just grinding, trying to get bed each and every day.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Yeah. Do you feel like you need a month? Five weeks?

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Honestly, some of the veterans always say, nah, give it,
give me a week, give me a couple of weeks,
and I'll be fine, good to go.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
How about for you?

Speaker 4 (00:57):
Uh, I think I'm the same way.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
Man.

Speaker 4 (00:58):
Just give me, give me a few weeks, you know,
let me get back in football shape, you know, get
my body acclimated in it. I'm gonna be good.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
Right.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
How do you how do you spend the off season
to make sure honestly that you don't show up here
eighty pounds overweight and getting yelled at by the coaching staff.

Speaker 4 (01:14):
Well, I just I try to make sure, you know,
like when I come back, I'm trying to make sure
I'm in the best shape as possible, you know, football shape,
you know that's a that's a different thing. But just
having your body, you know, prepared, you know to go
through that, you know, go through that to you know
them tough battles, you know, trying to get back in
football shape and you know, things of that nature. So
really just trying to do everything in my power, you know,

(01:34):
to come back and being you know a decent you know,
decent shape, great shape.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Is it is it important for you guys over the
off season Byron to get away from this vacation family time?
Just quit football for a week, two weeks to month?

Speaker 3 (01:47):
Whatever? Is that important? And if so, how do you
do that.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
It's very important, man, because you know, once you come back,
you know, you hear, you hear for months, you know,
and then the season it's a it's a very long season,
you know, eighteen games and plus to you know, don't
make the playoffs then go all the way, so that's
the season even longer. So really, man, in the off season,
I try to, you know, get away as much as
I can, but not too much. But you know, taking

(02:13):
food trips, you know, and Jordia faund you know, just
you know, just take time. I'll get away from ball,
you know, because at the end of the day, you know,
I'm more than just you know, a football player. So yeah,
really just try to try to hold in on them things.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
Well, you know, Byron Murphy is with us, And it's
interesting that you say that because obviously we know you
as a football player.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
That's why you're here, right, But.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
There's more to you than that, right What what more
is there tell us about Byron Murphy off the field?
Tell us about Byron Murphy. Tonight nine eight thirty at night,
practice is over, You're back hanging out.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
What are you doing if you weren't playing football?

Speaker 4 (02:48):
What would you be doing. Man, that's hard.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
Man.

Speaker 4 (02:50):
I don't know. That's a good question. I really don't know, man,
because I put my all into football, so I can't
even tell you.

Speaker 3 (02:59):
But are you a film junkie?

Speaker 4 (03:02):
I am really yes, Okay, yes, I like to you know,
I like to be ahead. I like to be prepared
going into games. I like to make sure, you know,
I know everything about my opponent from the you know,
lift guard to the sentence of the right guard, so
whether it's run or pass you off in the studium,
all the way to the tee.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Where you like that in college at Texas or did
you kind of really become a film junkie when you
got here?

Speaker 4 (03:23):
I really tried to. I really became a film junkie
when I got to the league college. I watched film,
but I really didn't have to watch it like that.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
Well, one thing that we've noticed about you, Biron Murphy
is with us on the air, And first of all,
I first got to know you a little bit when
you were wrecking the Husky offensive line in the final
in New Orleans.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
I know you weren't pleased with the way that game went,
but I certainly was.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
But you know what, we we gave it back to
yeah we got your super Bowl right. But yeah, you
go to a knee to absorb double teams, right, which
is kind of unusual to say the least. But you
somehow hold your ground even on your knees more so
and even get maybe when you're on your feet.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
By the way, how do you do that? And where
did that come from?

Speaker 4 (04:06):
So when I was at ut you know when I
got there, when I robbed on campus my freshman year,
I had a d line coach named Bo Davis, name
of bow Dave, shut out bow Man. Uh. He taught
me that technique.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
You know.

Speaker 4 (04:17):
He had me on the sled every day. I just
you know, working that technique, just dropping that knee, reducing
that you know that that shoulder, you know, just reducing
my surface and everything and turning that shoulder, not giving
you know, an old line and a half any any
type of you know, surface area on me to where
he can push on me. All all he can do,
you know, is push on my back. So pretty much

(04:39):
once I'm anchoring into the ground, I'm a strong guy.
So when you once you push it on me and
then also to me knowing old lineman Gosta climb to
the linebacker. So soon as he finela, I know he
gotta come off at any time because the linebacker coming down.
So soon as he come off, boo, I'm throwing the
primary man off me and I'm getting up making the place.
It's that simple. But I worked on it for years,

(04:59):
though it took me a while to get it, but wow,
now I just mastered it. So now like when they
come to playing doubles, I'm not I'm not worried about them,
like I'm so used to playing them and so used
to like reacting to them and seeing them from a
mall away. So it's it's really a piece of cake.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
Well, it's unbelievable to watch, and I just hope that
you know that right that that does not go unnoticed
the effort.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
Did you see what he just did. The other thing
I've noticed about you two Byron.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
Murphy without Seahawk defensive tackle obviously, is that you played
seventy percent of the snaps a year ago. Defensive tackles
don't do that, and you weren't doing that at Texas.
At Texas you're about fifty percent. I think now you're
at seventy. What's the story there?

Speaker 4 (05:38):
Man, I'm a dog man, That's all it is. Like,
I'm in great shape.

Speaker 3 (05:44):
I'm a dog.

Speaker 4 (05:45):
I'm I'm a guy. They can play, you know, all
three downs. I can play the run, I can pass right,
So I can do it all.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
Well, and look, guys that can do it all byron
get paid in the NFL. I asked you off the
air if you just the deal the Cowboys just gave
Quinn Williams and you said no. I told you three years,
one hundred and six million, one hundred and one million guaranteed.
And guys, you should see his face right now. It's
lighten up like a Christmas tree. Okay, I mean you're

(06:14):
paying attention to this stuff. How could you not win
guys like him Jalen Jeffrey Simmons for example, as well
all getting new deals over the offseason. How much of
that are you following? And what does that say to
you when guys are getting that kind of money at
your position?

Speaker 4 (06:29):
Oh man, it says a lot. You know, I'm happy
for them, guys. You know they deserve it. You know
they work for it, they earn it, and oh man, no,
but I'm just hocus on me right now. Ye're waiting,
just waiting my time, not really trying to know where
about that. You just got to take care of my
buses on the field and everything all this.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Oh yeah, is that even have you guys even remotely
started any conversations yet and you're okay with that for now?

Speaker 3 (06:51):
I'm fine, okay, okay.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
Well, this could be a big year for you. I
mean it's year three before your fourth year. The Seahawks
obviously just took care of Jackson, they're working on Spoon,
and they're in the same position now that you'll be
in a year from now. Do you feel like I
don't want to put any pressure on you obviously, go
back and just continue doing what you've been doing this year,
and this could be a much different situation for you

(07:15):
financially in a year from now.

Speaker 3 (07:16):
Do you kind of believe that in your heart? Oh?

Speaker 4 (07:17):
Yeah, I believe it in my heart.

Speaker 3 (07:19):
Man.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
Just gotta know, stay at it, stay committed to you know,
stay committed to the grind. Yeah, and conte you to
keep guy first man everything I following order.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
Well, what's what's uh, what's going to be new in
your toolbox this year? I mean it's year three.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
He never stopped growing we mentioned taking on double teams
on one knee, But what's what's next? On Byron Murphy's
goals list to do lists for twenty twenty six, you think.

Speaker 4 (07:41):
Man, you know I want to get I want to
get double digit sex this year. You know, that's that's
that's the thing I'm striving for. And really, you know,
just trying to be the best version of myself. That's
really it, man, and win games and help my team win.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
Does this team feel I mean, I know Mike's tried
to downplay the whole winning consecutive titles, but I'm not
sure what the verbiage that he's not saying, run it back?

Speaker 3 (08:05):
What's his thing?

Speaker 4 (08:05):
Running forward?

Speaker 3 (08:06):
Running forward?

Speaker 2 (08:07):
Which I'm like, all right, come on, do we're trying
to win back to back titles? But do the players
buy into that mentality, the whole running forward thing and
just that because that less than the pressure in some
ways on.

Speaker 4 (08:17):
You games most definitely, man, because you know, we know,
like we know we the hunting them, but you know,
we see all the stuff on social media, all the hype,
you know what's going on, but we're not worried about that.
We focus on this, and uh, we just focused on
getting better, man, and when the season come, that's that's
when we would display everything you know we've been we've
been working on, and you know, we just gonna go
out there and get out there. You know we're not

(08:38):
We ain't worry about nothing, nothing to outside noise, man.
We just focus on this right now.

Speaker 3 (08:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
Well, Bier Murphy with us two more, will let you go.
Julian Love was with us a few weeks ago. We
asked him about the Super Bowl. You guys are up
nineteen nothing, and we were we were starting to think
in the fourth quarter, man, this might be the first
shutout ever in.

Speaker 3 (08:56):
Super Bowl history.

Speaker 4 (08:57):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
Do you guys ever talk about how close you came
to doing that? Was that something that you talked about
at all during that game when it kind of became
apparent that you guys had the upper hand.

Speaker 4 (09:07):
I feel like, not just the Super but that's every game.
You know, we don't want a team to score it all. Yeah,
So that's that's that's how I go every game, man.
But uh, most definitely we didn't want them to score
at all. But we were really worried about that either.
But we didn't want them to score and they end
the scoring but you know, we just stuck with each other,
stayed to the game plan, kept believing to one another,
kept playing for one another, and we took care of business.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
There's a lot of cameras out here anyway. Yeah, but
now there's a lot of cameras out here. It's a
hard knocks thing. You gotta kind of watch yourself a
little bit, you know, get picking your nose or something.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
I don't talk a lot.

Speaker 4 (09:43):
I don't talk a lot, no way, so this is
really easy to me.

Speaker 3 (09:46):
Man.

Speaker 4 (09:46):
I just you know, just be myself. I'm used to camera,
so I ain't really worried about it.

Speaker 3 (09:50):
Did you watch the first episode?

Speaker 4 (09:51):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (09:51):
I did. What do you think it was pretty cool?
Is there a favorite part Coach Hammick?

Speaker 4 (09:56):
Yeah? My favorite part what.

Speaker 3 (09:59):
Are you us?

Speaker 1 (10:00):
That?

Speaker 3 (10:00):
Real quick?

Speaker 2 (10:00):
Because my partner back in the studio he didn't like
how many F bombs Tommy was using.

Speaker 3 (10:05):
What do you say to people that have that?

Speaker 4 (10:08):
You need to hear that every once in a while
to get you going. So yeah, yeah, I appreciate it.
You know, I'm very thankful that we got Coach Hammick
on our stout. Man.

Speaker 2 (10:15):
I love it, no doubt. Hey, you're the man. Great stuff.
Congrats on a hell of a career so far. But
keep you going, man, all right, you best of luck
this year, sir. You bet Meyra Murphy with us on

Speaker 2 (10:31):
You want to hang out for a little bit? You
tell me, all right, we're gonna break. How about that
by Jackson? I think you were here when Dick said
he didn't like the how many F bombs Thomas Hammock
was using on Hard Knocks.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
So we'll address that at some point today.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
