Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the R and R Foundation Specialist broadcast Studio. Now
back to Softie and Dick on your Home for the Huskies,
Kraken and the twelfth Man Sports Radio ninety three point
three kJ R FM.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Hey, some news in the NFL and some sad news
to pass along.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
You haven't heard it.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Our buddy Kevin Harlan, who joins us every Wednesday during
the NFL season, has been a part of our show
for going on about fifteen twenty years now. His dad,
Bob has passed away at the age of eighty nine,
former president of the Green Bay Packers. Hired Mike Holmgren
by the way in Green Bay with the Packers, So
condolences to Kevin, his family, Olivia, everybody over there with

(00:41):
the Harlans. We all know you guys all know how
much we appreciate, respect and love Kevin Harlan, not just
for the broadcaster but the person he is on this
radio station. So I wanted to pass that along thinking
about him and his family. As Bob Harlan has died
at the age of eighty nine years old, well joining
us right now in the Raid Show. And it's only
fair because I got to do his show tomorrow. So

(01:03):
he's coming on our show today. Our friend from A
ten WHB and kads us today, our friend Siren Petra
with us on the air. Saren, why the hell did
you guys have to trade our former Husky football superstar
Trent McDuffie to the frickin' Rams. I thought we were friends.
I thought we were tight. You couldn't have sent this

(01:25):
guy to anybody else New Orleans or the Jets or
the Jaguars. Guy had to pick the Rams.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
Huh.

Speaker 4 (01:32):
Yeah, hey, real quick, let me say so, you mentioned
about Bob Harlan.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
Kevin Harland comes on my show as well.

Speaker 4 (01:37):
Yeah, and there's no better human being, nope than Kevin
Hallen where blessed he lives here in Kansas City. He
did the Chiefs and the Kings back in the day
before they moved, and he did the Kings when he's
like twenty one, that's right, just straight out of college,
like one of the great broadcasters.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
Way better person.

Speaker 4 (01:53):
You know his brother, you know, his brother is John
Harbaugh's agents, that's right, and agents to many NFL folks,
which speaks to just what kind of man. Bob Harlan
was incredible as a football president. But you can see
the family incredibly successful as well, and incredibly successful while
being outstanding people. So you know, we put out the
same message a little bit earlier today that you guys did,

(02:14):
so I want to echo that sentiment. I hope everybody understands.
Anytime you see or hear Kevin Harlan, not only is
he brilliantly talented, but he's an even better person. Now
that being said, yes, yeah, Trent McDuffie another great guy.
You know, I guess it's like a great guy fest here.
That's one of the things I was talking with some
folks at the Chiefs and they're like, you know, it's

(02:34):
a lot easier to get the price you want when
you're trading away a quality individual. He said, it also
makes it a lot harder to make that trade. He said,
you know, we love Trent McDuffie, but we're just in
a spot where we need the picks, we need the
cap room, and he's a valuable commodity. And while we
don't like losing Trent McDuffie, it's just the move we
have to make for the football team right now.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
So look, the.

Speaker 4 (02:55):
Rams are the obvious dance partner. His former coach as
you know, on the coaching staff there. So you got
a guy that not only does everybody in the league
think Krent McDuffie's really good, but you got a guy
that knows him inside out, that knows he's not going
to be any kind.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
Of issue off the field.

Speaker 4 (03:09):
His tape speaks for itself as to what kind of
football player he is. They hoard picks, which I think
is a brilliant move by them, So they had plenty
of picks to give a team that starved for draft picks,
and they had the cap room forty million dollars worth
a cap so it just matched up.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
The Giants were the other team that was there, and
I think, you know, the.

Speaker 4 (03:25):
Chiefs maybe could have tried to squeeze a little more
juice out of that if they had waited to the draft.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
But you never know.

Speaker 4 (03:31):
The Rams go in another direction and say, okay, well
we'll just sign Jalen Watson. It's not our first choice,
but we'll take Jalen Watson, who's a free agent on
your team as well, and now we don't need your
corner and that offer dries up. So I think the
Chiefs struck while the iron was hot, got as much
as they could, and it's a deal that they just
had to make well, and.

Speaker 5 (03:47):
Sir En, I thought you got great compensation. I mean
a first, a fifth, a sixth this year, a third
next year. But is it a sign that Kansas City
is not really going forward until twenty twenty seven and
kind of treating next year is a recovery year for Mahomes.

Speaker 3 (04:03):
I think that's one way to put it.

Speaker 4 (04:04):
I mean, I think their view of it would be
that it's a sign that they're not willing to just
bury themselves for like one last go round. That they
know they've got five years, six years hopefully maybe more
of a prime Patrick Mahomes, and they don't want to
sell out. You know, they were fifty plus million over
the cap coming into this. They cut Jawan Taylor, they

(04:25):
redid Patrick Mahomes contract, which was always the plan. They
cut Mike Data. You know, they have some other things
they can do to get even lower. But now they're
in a position where they can go out and do
some things in free agency. But I want to be clear,
they need to do a lot of things. They need
quantity over quality. I mean, they're starting running back right now.
Is Burshard Smith and the other guys someone I've never
even heard of. Right, that's it. That's all they have

(04:47):
on the roster for running backs. If they lined up
right now, three wide, they would run out Rossie Rice,
who may be suspended again, Xavier Worthy in John Brownlee. Right,
you ever heard of John Brownlee? No, No, one has. Not
many people in Kansas City have. And that'd be their
third wide receiver right now. Let alone, if you get
to a fourth or a fifth, they need a tackle,
they need defensive tackles, defensive ends, they need a safety.

(05:08):
So this was just a deal that I think they
you know, knew they had to make. You know, the
question in Kansas City is, well, well this has been different.
Why didn't you trade you know, Nick Bolton or Tray Smith.
They wouldn't have brought near the return being a linebacker
and a guard. But they gave them, you know, top
of the food chain money at two positions at oren't
premium last year, and now they're they're defining themselves trading

(05:30):
the premium position. And so that's probably the frustration. I
think most of the fans get it for where they
are that this is a move made to try to
be good for five years and not just necessarily next year,
but you know they could have done things differently a
year ago.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
Well, Sir, en Petro Kansas City, where I was talking
about former Husky Trent McDuffie going to Kansas City's reunited
with Pook and a Kua by the way, who spent
some time at you dub before he transferred to BYU.
And I'm looking at just PFF's rankings. They had one
Ram corner in the top forty last year, and that
was McCreary at number twenty five. They've got McDuffie at

(06:04):
number twelve overall in the NFL. I'm just curious because
we kind of care about what this means for Kansas City,
but we really care what it means for the Rams
because that's who the Hawks are fighting for for a
division championship. So how much better are the Rams today
in your opinion, knowing what you know about what McDuffie's

(06:25):
got left in the tank, how much better are they
in their secondary?

Speaker 3 (06:29):
You know?

Speaker 4 (06:30):
I think, and I'll mention Jeremy Fowler does his preseason
you know, top ten in each position where he pulls
you know, front office people, and that one Trent McDuffie
came in, number four, came in.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
He was for Sauce.

Speaker 4 (06:41):
Gardner was five, and that was talking to executives around
the league. But I think what Trent mcuffie is a
little bit of a you know, the beauty's in the
eye of the beholder. I think he is the best nickel,
the best slot corner in football, and he's one of
the better outside corners. Like he does if you know,
if you want to say, okay, what's the weakness, go
turn on the joy Orge Pickens display that he put

(07:03):
on the Cowboys put on against Trent McDuffie, really feeding
him the ball.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
The bigger receivers.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
He's got shorter arms. That's why he was the third
corner to go in a very talented corner draft behind
stingleyan Gardner, because he's not quite the typical length.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
The hips, the feet, the.

Speaker 4 (07:18):
Mind, the toughness, everything else except that typical length is
all there with him, which is, you know, he's and
he's a battler, and so you know, he can be
fine on the outside, better than fine. I shouldn't say
he can be very good on the outside, but where
he can struggle is with those bigger receivers. But I
think the plan for the RAMS is to know that
Jackson Smith and Jigba works from the slot a lot.

(07:40):
You know, they can put him on Smith and Jigbla
and say, Okay, you know you're gonna have a tough
day to day because this is the best slot cover guy.
And you know, I think so that's what I think,
you know they're looking at. He's also a great tackle.
I think he's had like nine miss tackles in like
his entire time at Kansas City. And that's the hallmark
of the chief secondary. Dave Merritt really preaches that. Steve

(08:01):
Spagnolo preaches it and he exemplifies it because he's a
tremendous tackler. So you know, you come up for run support,
He's tough, he's ready to do it, and he's effective
at doing it.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
So they got a guy that.

Speaker 4 (08:12):
I think the RAMS will probably deploy a lot in
the slot and a lot on Jackson Smith and Jibbin.

Speaker 5 (08:18):
You mentioned the running back situation, and that's why Jeremiah
Love has mocked so many times to Kansas City. You
finally have a high pick, which I know you don't
want in Kansas City, but it seems like a marriage
made in Heaven between you guys in Jeremiah Love. Is
that where most Chiefs fans want to go in April?

Speaker 4 (08:36):
You know, I think there are some, but I think
there's also, you know, a feeling of like, don't overspend
on a running but don't take a running back too high.
You can find good running backs later in the draft,
and that's less true today. I mean, I think that
was the trend. You look at the top ten running backs,
you know, in rushing at the end of the year,
and eight of the ten to be after the first round.
You know, six of the ten would be after the

(08:57):
second round. There'd be one that wasn't draft. You know,
there was I think it was it was easier to
find decent running backs later.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
It was all about your offensive line. And now that running.

Speaker 4 (09:07):
Backs are receivers as much as they are runners at times,
I think that makes you know, a guy like Jeremiah
Love even more valuable. I mean, I hear these different
comps where they're trying to go to meet Christian McCaffrey
is the comp to him when they talk about how
well he runs the routes, which would be the perfect
guy for Andy Reid, but they have so many needs,
and I think they do feel like, well, the premium

(09:27):
running necks still need to go early.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
You can still maybe.

Speaker 4 (09:30):
Get eighty five eighty percent of him in the third round,
or you can put him together with two or three
different guys. They do like Brishard Smith, who was a
seventh round pick last year, who had a really nice
last game.

Speaker 3 (09:40):
He didn't play much. He needs to get bigger, he
needs to get stronger.

Speaker 4 (09:43):
He's a wide receiver convert out of Miami and SMU,
and they do feel like he's got some skills and
he may be the third down part of it. So
I think they'll look to kind of piece it together.
There's talk that they want to find a running back
and free agency in the five to eight million dollar range,
maybe a Tyler Algier type, and then Shark Smith is
a receiving back, and then draft a young running back.
But I think nine is more likely to be one

(10:05):
of those traditional premium positions.

Speaker 3 (10:07):
Wide Out would have to be tATu ohast tackle, okay,
a cool.

Speaker 4 (10:11):
I don't think it'd be corner because there's not a
corner that goes out, but edge and d tackle would
be the most likely spot for that.

Speaker 2 (10:16):
Well, just do us a favorite Surren Siren Petro WHB
Kansas City. Next time you guys move a talent like McDuffie,
can you just converse with us first before you trade
him to our biggest arrival. For God's sakes, Yeah, yeah,
I'll make some calls. I'll call us all right, Hey,
we'll talk tomorrow and your show. Budd appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (10:32):
Management, look forward to it, guys. All right, good stuff.

Speaker 2 (10:36):
Siren Petro obviously still very high on Trent McDuffie. And
now I was looking at PFF's rankings for just corners,
and I was just filtering the Rams, and I said, man,
who's this guy they have at number twelve that played
corner for the Rams.

Speaker 3 (10:48):
It's mcduffee. They've already changed it. Mcduffee.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
You know, number one was in the NFL last year,
by the way, by them in their spoon, Devin Witherspoon,
number one with the rated corner back in the NFL.

Speaker 5 (10:59):
You know, I was looking at the running backs and
it's totally gone back to highly drafted running backs dominating
the NFL. I'm the ten of the top twelve in
yards last year first and second round draft picks.

Speaker 3 (11:11):
Right, So you got it.

Speaker 5 (11:12):
You want to get a Bell Calt running back, you
got to take one in the first sixty picks.

Speaker 2 (11:16):
Well, let's do this. We're gonna break. Bill Krueger is
gonna join us at five o'clock tonight. Here's the thing.
Bill and I were talking off here today about getting
him back on the on the show and you know,
finding a sponsor and all that. I was like, okay,
you know, give me a couple of weeks, we'll work
on something. Well he doesn't know this, but it's already done,
and we're gonna tell him at five o'clock that he's back.
He's back in book. The Queen Anne beer Hall has

(11:36):
stepped up. They're going to pay him in chicken wings
and cocktails for six months. And Bill has agreed to that.
By the way, he said, that's fine by me. So
Bill will join us at five. We'll talk some baseball
with Bill Krueger.
