Mariners in nineteen ninety five. He finished second in the
Cy Young two other times with the Mariners and finished
third as well. He was an All Star one, two, three,
four five times with Seattle. One of those times, frankly,
it was because they had to have an All Star.
That was nineteen ninety That's how baseball works. But the

why he wasn't a Mariner in the second place. So
Randy Johnson was traded to Seattle by the Montreal Expos.

And so the Expos traded him to Seattle, and the
reason was the Mariners were not going to be able
to And this is the craziest, cruelest twist of all.
I don't know if people have seen the Exposed documentary
on Netflix. It's phenomenal. The but he was traded by
the Exposed to Seattle along with Gene Harris and Brian Holmgren. Brian,

the thing is because this Mariners could not afford to

I don't, know that i would change. The definition the.
CURRENT definition of saves it's not bad i would say
the save is more like the pitcher win because it takes,
a whole team to get you there. And it takes,
a defense behind you it's a team a. Stat it's

something i might. Increase the VALUE of things like hold

one thing i would really love to do. Is give,
wins to relievers more often you know there's a lot
of times where the starter pitched three four innings and
then a reliever comes in and pitches two, innings and
keeps them into the game and the. Starter gets, the
win for some reason you KNOW there's a lot of
times where I look, AT a box score and i

say i have no, idea WHY that person got that
win and, i hate the one where you know like
a real believer gives up. The, Tying, run, AND gets
the win right yes yeah I would just fool around.
WITH who i award the win to i would try
to give more credence or just, like make more leader
boards for holds which are kind of like mid game saves.

Where YOU keeps the team in it and i think
that the story was about the fact that. We're spreading
saves around so much now we used, to award one
guy the closer role and you Know that, is funny because,
you've got munno's there and you know if if, a
manager was, given, TRUTH to them he'd probably say yeah.

I would love, to have one guy but even that
we now don't, do back to back to backs anymore
and we try to avoid back to, backs where we
can because of fatigue and so you. Kind of always
need a backup, closer and then on top of that,
NOW we're doing things where you know, i COULD go
to my backup closer or i could go to that,
one guy who, has really sideways pitches and you know.

Next three, batters can't hit sideways pitches you know there's matchups,
play and then on top, of that then there's the
injury part which we've.

fact that one hundred, pitchers have a save already this.
Season twenty nine games in the season that's the most, since, They,
Started KEEPING track of saves.

Things it's the coping it's managers coping, they don't have
their number one guy. So they're just gonna. Spread it,
around It's small markets coping you know, the twins traded
away their entire bullpen so they just they're just trying,
to stay. Keep their head above water you know and
then it's also it's, a little bit like the opener

strategy where like if you, don't have a great fifth
starting pitcher then you're gonna you're gonna play some games,
to try, and make that picture. Better you know whoever,
you've got, there, so it's, it's coping it's matchups. Play
it's injuries, it's all of that but you know it
is a little bit LIKE, running back by committee in

the nfl where you may just not have. Guys, that
HIT those upper numbers anymore yes the nfl is a
little bit more complicated because, they went, to seventeen games
and like you know so you can get that extra.
Game to get to those big numbers but Still There,
were some workhorse backs like adrian peterson some guys back
in the day. That like just ran all the time

and now most teams have like two or three guys
and they mix it, around and they throw a lot more.

any stays? Shouldn't we give that guy some money so

there's some questions here about how we go forward with,
record books, and. WITH like rewarding players you know economically

started lifting ways more, i got bigger TORN up my
frame and then once i. Got on, the field and
got healthy you know haven't come back.
