Speaker 1 (00:00):
We'll get some Mariners in a second. NBA last night
was insane. The final, the ending of that game, that's crazy. Yeah,
I mean it wasn't until the end, like, if we're
being honest, it was not. It was a great It
was a great fourth quarter, that's what it was. Actually,
good end of third fourth quarter is what it was. Right,
But that's that's the NBA in nutshell, We'll get Andrews Mexico.
South Africa. They're kicking things off here momentarily have they

(00:20):
already kicked off? They have for two minutes in no score?

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (00:24):
No scoring?

Speaker 1 (00:25):
Okay, okay, good, I'm telling you man, I'm be just
became more intrigued to start looking at the lines on
all this stuff. Oh boy, yeah, I think the draw, well,
I'm guessing this is like South Africa's not good? Is
that the deal?

Speaker 3 (00:42):
They're not great? But you know, you know these games,
I don't think Mexico is like amazing either.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
So okay, all right, uh yeah, I think I need
to find my way to so O'claoma Casino. Sorry, Brendan Sorosby,
I don't have an issue. I haven't put a wager
sports leader down in a while, So.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
You're also not playing in the World Cup, so you
can wager on the World Cup.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
I'm not playing World Cup and I don't Yeah, this
I have no insider information outside of I checked with
Andrews or Jackson. That's about what I can do as
far as and now I got Danny Jackson's number. I
can check with him too, I guess. But we are
all over the coverage of it. We told you about
yesterday twelve thirty. We're gonna do a little thing on
World Cup, just real quick with We did some a

(01:19):
fun little round table yesterday with Danny Jackson, the voice
of the Sounders Anderson Hurst and Jackson felt furious felts
just kind of expectations of both the US and who
maybe are some under underdogs that could win this tournament
which starts today. Much anticipated tournament for sure, And I
should mention this is crazy number before we move on
to some baseball and some other things. The fact that

(01:42):
only eight countries have ever won the World Cup, which
started back in nineteen thirties. And yeah, that is insane.
I got seven of the eight yesterday.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
You did I did I quiz you in the break
That was pretty fun.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
The only one I didn't get was what Uruguay.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
Yes, and now that was one that a lot of
people honestly don't know because that was back in the
thirties when they won it.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
So okay, I mean I'm old, I'm not that old.
So that's that I was forgiven for the seven of eight.
I think that's pretty good for a hockey guy, isn't that? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (02:05):
Absolutely bad?

Speaker 1 (02:06):
Not bad, all right? So yeah, we'll keep you updated
on Mexico South Africa. That's one of two World Cup games.
Later on it's South Korea and Chechia in Guadalajara. I
believe it is tonight. So that's the second game those
two games today, and then the US has its first
game coming up tomorrow and that'll be fun as well.
Six o'clock. We'll have that game for you right here
on nine three point three KTERFM. I think we started

(02:28):
with the pregame at five thirty. If I'm not.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
Mistaken, that is correct.

Speaker 1 (02:31):
So yeah, here we go. World Cups Underway, Baseball Underway
quick thought mirrors. I listen, I tough loss. Kirby kind
of spun his way out of some issues yesterday, didn't
I mean kind of the same thing as Gilbert right
the night before, It's like, oh god, are we gonna
have We'll kind of start. You're loading the bases and
all this kind of stuff's going on early innings, and

(02:52):
somehow he snuck his way through and and only gave
up a couple runs and then all of a sudden, boom,
it fell apart. But that's gonna happen along the way.
Short bullpen. We'll talk to Eno Sarah's about that a
little bit coming up at one thirty today, our baseball
guy from the Athletic and rates and Berrel's podcast, The
Shorter Bullpen and with the six starters and how that's

(03:12):
affecting them. They had a bunch of guys that were
unavailable last night, as was even the case of the
night before, So we'll touch in on that. Hey, you
know what, the worst case scenario, split four games with
Baltimore and then he head onto the Nation's capital. Ask
you know about what to expect when they start that
series with the Nationals coming up this weekend as well.
I mentioned the Kraken situation. Patrick Alvin hired as an

(03:32):
assistant GM pretty big name in the hockey circles, especially
the fact that he was a sitting GM last year.
He's worked with bots in the past. We'll talk about
that a little bit. Two o'clock. Thomas strants from the
Athletic we'll join us for that as well. Drake Thomas
coming up here in maybe a little less than an
hour's time right after one when they wrap up practice,
and excited to talk to him in person. We got

(03:52):
him on the show a couple times last year via
the phone that we haven't a chance to talk to
him in person. Those are a little more fun. I
got to ask Hi about the basketball Carently yesterday he
was at the Doug Baldwin Community Center. Oh yeah, and
Chris Kid was out there. I don't know. Do you
know Chris volunteers out there.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
Yeah, it's where he works.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
He's such a good dude, man, great dad. Chris is
Chris's salt of the earth. Yeah, so I got this.
I got the lowdown on Drake's basketball game. So we'll
ask he sounds like what you would call I'll see
if I have if I can work it in without
him getting offended. He's LA fitness try hard guy.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
Ah, okay is what it sounds like.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
As far as they got some massive hoopers on it. Now. Listen,
look at his stat. He's five eleven right, right, Like
this is this guy was probably all about football and
only football. I'm guessing, you know, growing up. But we'll
ask him, like, there's dudes, like, there's dudes you look
like that are true hoopers right in the NFL, Like
that's always been a that's always been a thing, like
who are the guys that are true basketball guys? Right?

(04:51):
And there's some dudes out here that can flat out hoop.
But h but we'll ask him how the kids were.
I guess it got pretty competitive with the kids, which
is pretty fun. That's awesome what they did yesterday. I'm
just gonna say it again. It's just awesome. I mean,
it's just it's it's it's just absolutely awesome, Uh, going
out and spending time. And I think in a in
a day and age in which the NFL is so

(05:13):
regimented and you're you're limited on how much time you
have as a coach and a staff with your players
in the offseason and and and all those things, it's
it's pretty refreshing to see, Hey, we're gonna we're gonna
take some time. Yeah, we've got to deal with Miles
Garrett and Jared got or Matthew Stafford and we got
all that. We got to deal with that. But you

(05:34):
know what is more important today? Going to Children's hospital,
going to the VA Hospital, going to Ronald McDonald house,
and going to Doug Baldwin's Community Center. That's more important.
And I just I tip of the cap to these guys, man.
I think it's just absolutely awesome. This is the one
team in town that doesn't need to do community outreach
because a lot of times you do that just to
kind of help your perception in the community. And sure

(05:56):
there's a lot of kids that benefit or other people
benefit from it, but you're doing it to you know,
it's a marketing thing. They don't need to do that.
So they do it for really truly all the right reasons.
When I say they don't need to do that. Last
I checked, it's hard to find a seat at Luminfield,
is it not. I think it's really hard. Yeah. Usually
so last night what an event, uh, the NBA Finals.

(06:19):
Now here's the funny thing. This sink could seriously end
in a in a in a five game series, it
could end it could end in game five, and usually
a game a five game series. You're like, well, it's
kind of a nothing burger, right, does not real competit. Sure,
but what happened last night with the Knicks coming back

(06:40):
for a one oh seven to one oh six win
over the San Antonio Spurs in this epic comeback, I
mean absolutely epic comeback one for the ages, a last
second tip in a chance at the end for San
Antonio up by one to put it away. Dearon, Fox

(07:02):
is getting killed today because he didn't just dribble it out.
I kind of thought he got fouled. Yeah, going to
the basket if that's if that's SGA. Man, he's flopping
to the floor, and I'm one hundred cent there's a
foul called Fox is a little tougher guy, And you
know he didn't and it cost them the game in
the end, and now they're down three games to one.

(07:25):
They scored San Antonio thirty points in the second half,
thirty points, seventy six in the first half, thirty points
in the second half, fourteen in the third quarter, sixteen
in the fourth quarter.

Speaker 3 (07:38):
He yeah, I mean they were just red hot in
the first half and it just all came crashing down
so quickly.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
Well, There is a lot of criticism today for the Spurs,
I think directly or indirectly. Also pointed in the direction
of one Mitch Johnson, Seattle product Odai High School jj
Son as well. This is inside the NBA post game
last week in Charles Barkley.

Speaker 4 (08:01):
But we saw with the dumbas basketball team in the
history of civilization. Wow, we saw they had a twenty
five point league to eight straight threes like they thought
to get like that was some of the most mismanaged
stupid basketball. Hey, when you fought twenty nine point league,

(08:22):
the other team has to help you. The San Antonio
Spurs help the New York and when Knicks win this
game by doing some of the stupid ass stuff I've
ever seen on.

Speaker 5 (08:32):
The basketball court. Congratulations to the Knick for coming back.
But I can hear with you. They played terrible basketball.
They got comfortable, they got comfortable with the league. They
was already talking about, you know, going back to San Antonio.
They're just in place. Marty. You know, you never know
what a champion is or to become a champian. But
tonight the Knicks they fought like a champion.

Speaker 6 (08:50):
They did.

Speaker 7 (08:51):
Listen, we're sitting back there in the third quarter, they shot,
goes yo, these guys got to put them away right now.
Second quarter, they got to put them away right now.
They started to make the run tours. They end on
a second quarter. The Knicks kept fighting, they kept fighting.
They go back twenty six, cut it the nineteen. They
got back in that third quarter. Un once they cut
it to twelve. This game was a rap.

Speaker 4 (09:12):
When they shot, they would have had to twenty five
part lead. They shot eight threes in a row, never
even came close to use it any time on the clock.
And you're like, this game ain't over.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
You seventy six, forty nine and a half, and then
that's what happened in the second half. I mean, that's
an indictment. They're not saying Mitch's name out loud, but
they're saying miss Johnson out loud. Andrews like that's what
they're saying.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
I mean, yeah, when you're talking about how the team
is playing, this fan usually goes down to the coach, right.

Speaker 1 (09:44):
It's just, yeah, it's mismanaged. And and here's the thing
with basketball comebacks, And it doesn't matter if it's last night,
it doesn't matter if it's in the NCAA tournament or
a Tuesday night when Orlando's playing New Orleans. If there's
a big comeback in basketball, normally, what Charles Barkley said
is true that the other team has to help out, right,

(10:06):
Like you've got to help out. You've got to do
your part because either you have to miss some shots.
Sure you can get quote defensive stops, but let's be honest,
you've got to just get complacent. I thought Shack said,
or great, they got complacent, they got they got lazy
just hoisting up threes. I mean, listen, I'm looking at
the three pointers. It's it's not good.

Speaker 5 (10:29):
You know.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
Wemby was two for eight from outside the three point range.
He was nine to twenty five overall from the field.
He missed three free throws. He missed two critical free
throws in the final couple minutes. It could have not
put the game away, but it makes it almost impossible,
almost impossible for the Knicks to come back. Those two
miss free throws were critical in the in the comeback,
as well as everything else had happened, end up being

(10:52):
what will go down as one of the great finishes
in NBA Finals history. It's not Michael and MJ over
Brian Russell in Salt Lake City at the Delta Center.
The crossover push off Did he push? Did he not?

Speaker 5 (11:08):
Right?

Speaker 1 (11:09):
Because that one won a series. That was the game
winning and series clinching shot, So that was that's still
probably just because of who it is, being as it was, Mike,
that's still number one. This one's right, This tip ends
right up there, that's right up there. Now there's still
a possession left afterwards, and the Jazz had a possession
by the way as well. I'm alone.

Speaker 3 (11:30):
It did feel like it was kind of from one
of those sports movies. And I'm someone who's as big
a critic of you know, sports movies as there is
because it just doesn't feel like reality very much. It's
very like Hollywood. But that's kind of what it felt
like last night. You had the I guess the only
thing that wasn't was the clock expiring when it happened,
you know what I mean. But you have the shot

(11:50):
from Brunson where the entire arena goes quiet because he
bricked it. And then you see og Ananoby, the guy
who inbounded the ball, by the way, yeah, come out
of absolutely nowhere. His hand rises above the rest of them,
and it's just a perfect tip in perfectly it.

Speaker 1 (12:06):
Listen, we say this all the time. It's clichet ish,
I get it. But it's why sports are great is
when you have events in moments like that. We had
our weekly golf league last night at Drewids. Glenn were
sitting in there and I walked in and it was
mid third quarter. It was still like a nineteen point
lead or something. And my one buddy, the Viking, who
he might be the closest thing to Brendan Sooresby except

(12:28):
for again to insider information, but he bet he bets
on table tennis in Pakistan, So like this guy, oh
my god. Yeah. Anyway, we were talking because he took
the Spurs guys like plus two thirty or something straight up,
and I'm like, dude, you're loving this right now, Like
this is you can just go cash that ticket and
he's like, yeah, we cash that ticket. Then about twenty

(12:50):
minutes later we're like, oh, this is getting close, and
then the whole the entire restaurant bar was going bananas.
And I can't remember that happening for an NBA game
in forever. I've seen that for Mariners games. I saw
it three years ago for cracking playoff games there, but
not for an NBA playoff game with no rooting interests
locally here outside of Mitch and the fact they knocked
off the Oklahoma City Thunder. It was crazy. It was

(13:12):
fun to watch. Unfortunately, for this series, it feels like
it's probably gonna be over in five. I don't know,
I don't know how mentally you bounce back from that. Yeah,
I mean, I just don't know how you especially when
you have a big lead, you have a big lead
in San Antonio in game five, or you're gonna be like, well,
I mean, you'll approach it different, I would assume, right, Yeah,
I mean.

Speaker 3 (13:29):
It feels like one of those situations where I mean,
you lost both games, the first two games at home,
so you felt like off series over, and then you
come back and win game three at MSG It's like, Okay,
you know, we have some life here, and you have
the giant lead in game four if you had made
it too to going back to San Antonio, it felt
completely in the Spurs court to win the series, and
then all of a sudden, now because one tip deflating

(13:52):
that happened, it's like, well, now it feels like it's
insurmountable for some reason.

Speaker 1 (13:56):
Right, one tip in changed the entire series, all right,
before we get to break, mayors to make a roster
move today, Michael Rucker right handers selected from Tacoma Triple
A Tacoma Domingo Gonzalez d f A.

Speaker 3 (14:11):
Yeah, and you saw why last night if.

Speaker 1 (14:13):
You were watching the Merri game, you know why. Poor
Domingo is no longer with us, at least in terms
of baseball terms. Okay, we'll take a break, we'll come back.
When we come back, we might have our first goal
in the World Cup to play for you. Maybe we
also we also will just check in on a little
bit of what you need to know with that tournament.
One o'clock Drake Thomas Seahawkins side linebacker who had and

(14:34):
we're gonna play it for him. We're gonna play that
pick for him from San Francisco in that game. He'll
join us just after one o'clock. You know, sarahs at
one thirty. We had a busy day. Four nine four
to five one is the Tacoma Dodge text line four
nine four five one. Your thoughts, to comments, your questions,
your concerns, right here nine three point three KTER FM.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
Now back Dean Furness on your home for the Huskies
cracking and the Twelfth Man brought to you. I Seattle's
closestn't call me Casino and Hotel on Sports Radio ninety
three point three kJ R FM.

Speaker 1 (15:08):
So don't know about sports, big go anders, give me
a little recap. What's going on. That's a Mexico goal.

Speaker 3 (15:24):
I do believe play in Mexico are flying in these
first couple minutes. I guess we're about twenty five minutes
in at this point. They're just taking the hydration break
right now. For those I have had a couple of
texts saying, I'm recording the games, don't tell me anything, guys.
We're a sports radio station.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
That's yeah, it's not We're not sorry, man.

Speaker 3 (15:44):
We're I understand that there are some people who want
to be surprised by the results later, but we have
to do our jobs and update everyone as to what's
going on in the wide world of sports, so to speak.
So just a heads up, I understand, and uh, you know,
unfortunately we have to do our job here, but Mexico's
playing really well. South Africa had to give away at
a very bad position in Mexico, capitalized to make it

(16:07):
one zero and they're playing pretty well.

Speaker 1 (16:08):
In the first tea out there there we go, well, listen,
we're gonna get to some Seahawks at one o'clock here.
We're also going to touch it in on some of
the things here at twelve forty five, including some Mariner
conversation quick when I want to get to there. But
before we do all of that, we had a chanceship.
We had a great round table yesterday. Nanny Jackson voiced
the Sounders Anderson Hurst, Jackson Felts for those who don't
know those three, along with what Peter Fewing who.

Speaker 3 (16:30):
Are doingrad Evans and Steve Zachewana.

Speaker 1 (16:32):
Yes, they are all part of our iHeart coverage. And
you guys are doing stuff for like a lot of people, right.

Speaker 3 (16:37):
It's it's it's not just here in Seattle, It's across
the entire country.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
So they the Iheart's coverage of FIFA World Cup is
originating in Seattle at six forty five Elliott in our
new studio Studio D. These guys are all over it, pregames,
post games, US games will be right here on ninety
three point three k FM, including tomorrow night. Yep, we'll
also have some other select games on ninety three point
three KFA, and of course everything's on nine fifty on

(17:01):
the AM dial as well. So we got a lot
of World Cup covers going on. We did a fun
roundtable yesterday and I think for those curious, and I
was one of them, I wanted to kind of find
out who to watch. Now we know some of the power.
Give me the quick three or four powers that are
are favorite?

Speaker 3 (17:15):
France, Spain, Argentina, England is probably what I would say.

Speaker 1 (17:19):
Yeah, all right, so only eight countries have ever won
the World Cup. Since nineteen thirty only eight have ever
won it. Maybe this is a year somebody else is
able to step forward and surprise the world and win
the World Cup. So what I did is we sat
down real quick with these guys and asked about who
some underdogs would be casino and also and also the

(17:41):
expectations for the US. This surprised me. Only eight teams
have ever won the World Cup. That's crazy, and I
mean was Argentina is a defending Champs France twenty eighteen.
We know, you know, Brazil's wonted, England's wonted Germany, et cetera.
So Danny, let me give me a just mentioned that
both these guys just mentioned, you know, Cinderella teams. Give

(18:01):
me a team. Maybe it is Belgium, the afore mentioned Belgium,
But give me a team, Danny that could be a
first time World Cup winner, And I guess if that's
the case, would probably fall into the Cinderella category.

Speaker 8 (18:14):
It would, and I'm looking through the lessening, Portugal would
be somebody that stands out.

Speaker 9 (18:18):
Obviously, Christiana Ronaldo is going to be his last tournament.

Speaker 8 (18:22):
He and Messi are going to have their moment in
the sun so to speak, before they got and just
retire in the Cup the next couple of years, I
think that's a team that has the chance to maybe
step up. You know, you've got a big bump behind
Christiana Ronaldo being his last. You've got a ton of
talent throughout that squad and that team that can make
her run. And again I think a lot of it's

(18:43):
doing a little bit of luck. Right, what do the
teams and groups around you do and what does that
pathway look like for Portugal moving through? But if I
was to say, outside of the big teams that you mentioned. Obviously,
France Baine of the favorite. England sit right below Zoologentina
the obvious. But I think Portugal is a team to watch, Jackson.

Speaker 1 (19:05):
Do you agree.

Speaker 10 (19:06):
Yeah, I think that's a good shout for me. Netherlands
is one that I'm absolutely watching. I think that's a
team on the com sort of. You can say that
in the previous couple World Cups, they definitely had players
that were part of kind of a half of a
golden generation. But I think they have really good attacking threats.
I think defensively they're stout. If I was looking at

(19:28):
the odds a little bit, I might put a few
shekels on the Netherlands.

Speaker 1 (19:32):
I like their makeups. Uh.

Speaker 3 (19:35):
Yeah, I think Portugal is a good one. It's just
I don't know about teams that haven't won it before.
But in terms of the people that are not necessarily
full on favorites, I'm looking at someone. A lot of
people are overlooking Brazil in this tournament, and I realize
they've won more than almost anyone else I have, and
it's it's weird, just because it feels like they're usually

(19:58):
just completely star studded, but for whatever reason, they don't
have maybe as much of a roster around them of
just complete superstars. It's Neaymar's kind of last ride as well.
He's dealing with an injury going into the tournament. You
have Venisius Junior who's place for Real Madrid and he
kind of had a down ish year with them. It's

(20:21):
just a lot of question marks, but I really like
what they did at their coach position with bringing in
Carlo Ancelotti, which is another reason I actually think England
Danny will love this one has a really good shout
as well, kind of in that kind of tier below
the absolute favorites in France and Spain, and then again,
I just I think Argentina, also for whatever reason, is
getting a little bit overlooked. I don't think their squad

(20:43):
is as good as it was in twenty twenty two,
but they're one of the most balanced teams overall, and
you can always count on them to have really good
chemistry and work really well together, and they're gonna want
to do it in Messi's last really hurrah as well.
So I'd give those kind of teams a good shout.

Speaker 1 (20:59):
All right, we'll go around the horn. Danny Jackson Andrews Hurst,
Jackson felts with US. Danny will start with you realistic
expectations for the United States of America. They're in a
Group D with Paraguay, Australia and Turkey. So Danny, what
are realistic expectations. What would be a good result of
the tournament? What would be disastrous? I guess disastrous not

(21:19):
getting out of the group stage, but I'll let you
go first.

Speaker 5 (21:23):
You're right.

Speaker 9 (21:23):
I think you just hit the nail on the head.

Speaker 8 (21:25):
Disastrous would be losing that first game and then having
to go into the third game needing a result against
Turkey down in LA. I think the biggest challenge that
the US have is stability throughout their starts. In eleven
the US of ship goals. They're typically to win a
competition like this, you need to be good in the back,
and they've only had three clean sheets in the last

(21:46):
twenty games, and then can they be clinical in the
attacking third.

Speaker 9 (21:50):
They don't have somebody who's going to.

Speaker 8 (21:52):
Be out and out striker like Harry Kane is or
you on Bape or your messy who's going to win
you games for nothing. I think Round of sixteen is
probably where the US where they're playing right now, could
stand to go out. I think they'll make it through
to the round of sixteen. I think they will win
their group just purely because of home field advantage, and

(22:14):
I think if they can squeeze through the sixteen, I
think eight.

Speaker 9 (22:17):
Is when you start to meet the real big boys,
and I.

Speaker 8 (22:20):
Think that's would be a round of eight here in
the US would be a really big result and something
to really work from going into the next World Cup.

Speaker 1 (22:29):
Jackson, I'll go to you and just remind it's amazing
the difference between the men and the women in our country.
The women have been dominant at the world at the
world stage, in the international stage Olympics and or World Cup,
but the men obviously still trying to find their footing.
So Jackson, same question to you.

Speaker 10 (22:43):
Yeah, it's a disappointment when the women don't win the
whole dang thing. And here it's for sure what Danny said,
it's a disappointment if you don't get out of the group.

Speaker 3 (22:52):
For sure.

Speaker 10 (22:53):
I'll even take you know, a second in the group.
That's fine, But that next game, especially if you win
the group, if you win the group, that round thirty
two game will be down in San Francisco Levi Stadium, sorry,
San Francisco Stadium, which is in Santa Clair, and that
will be against a third place team from one of
four or five different groups. You gotta win that game, so.

Speaker 1 (23:15):
That's right there.

Speaker 10 (23:15):
I think the realistic expectation is you win that game,
you get to the round of sixteen, which would then
be back potentially in Seattle at Seattle Stadium Lumenfield, and
at that point, you know you're you're going up against
a good team like potentially a Belgium, and I'm not
gonna hold against the US if they go out in
that regard against a good team. However, if we can

(23:38):
dare to dream like the Danny said, quarterfinals would be
an absolute dream because then you are really, you know,
developing that intense soccer passion from a lot of average
Joe sports fans around the United States. You're going up
against likely a Spain, and nobody is going to be
mad at all if you lose two nothing to Spain

(23:58):
in a quarterfinal.

Speaker 3 (24:00):
Andrew, Yeah, I'm gonna take a different kind of route
with this answer because I believe this is the best
US men's national team that we have ever had, and
I believe they have the right manager at the helm
to get the most out of them at this tournament.
So I'm not gonna go on record and say I
expect them to make a quarterfinal or I expect them
to make a semifinal. I will say this feels like

(24:22):
in my lifetime, And I don't know about before that
ninety four there was on home soil as well. That
was before I was born, so I can't really speak
to that. But in my lifetime, this feels like the
best chance to have a quote unquote magical run. And
I feel like the stars are kind of aligning with
it being here, with having a relatively just with how

(24:43):
Jackson laid out the possibilities of who you might be
facing in the group stages. This could be a special summer.
Now you need to go out and do that. But
I'm just gonna kind of open up the possibility of
a magical semifinal run for the US men's national team.

Speaker 1 (24:57):
I like Jackson.

Speaker 3 (24:58):
I left that in there.

Speaker 1 (25:00):
Oh it's good. That is really good.

Speaker 3 (25:03):
You know.

Speaker 1 (25:03):
I heard Jackson with Greg earlier and just the path
real quick again, Andrews. Before I get to a break here,
the path for the US to play in a knockout
game here is win their group, yes, right, then you
win the round of thirty two in Santa Clara, right,
and then you would be here, correct.

Speaker 3 (25:23):
I believe. So. I am not usually a huge fan
of trying to predict the entire bracket because you don't
know how the groups are gonna kind of fall out
stuff like that. Like Jackon's all into that stuff, that's
less for me. I'm more bigger picture looking at you know,
if this team's good enough to go and win the tournament.
And I feel like it is, and that's just a
big thing for me is I have a lot of

(25:44):
faith in what they're doing right now. I think they
have a good balanced squad in terms of age, and
they have a really good coach. A lot of things
are going in the US's favor, and I really I
do think that this could be a magical summer when
it comes to following. The US men's national.

Speaker 1 (25:58):
Team absolutely love it. Still one nil Mexico.

Speaker 3 (26:02):
Yes, it is one zero Mexico. We got about ten
minutes left in the first half. Sir.

Speaker 1 (26:06):
We like to say nil one nil. I don't know
where you come from, You're you know.

Speaker 3 (26:10):
Come on, I'm a novice excuse me.

Speaker 1 (26:12):
I don't know. I kind of need I need, I
kind of need you to get your stuff together when
we're talking about these there are not all right, we'll
take a break. We're juggling things around the just uh
we're wait the Mariner of Mirrors. The Seahawks are gonna
wrap up here, maybe a few minutes early, so we
may end up getting Drake Thomas before the top of
the hour. We'll see, uh, so stick around. Much more
to come. Nine three point three kJ FM.

Speaker 2 (26:36):
Now back to Ian Furness on your Home for the
Huskies Cracking and the Twelfth Man, brought to you by
Seattle's Closest Snow call Me Casino and Hotel on Sports
Radio ninety three point three kJ r FM.

Speaker 1 (26:52):
All Right, Seahawk practice, final day of mandatory mini camp
just wrapped up. Drake Thomas is actually gonna make his
way in here and just go seconds. So we'll tap
dance around a wait for him to pop in. When
he popped in the last time, we had just lost
power and our little remote unit had died a heroic death,

(27:16):
and he saw the look of panic in the eyes
of a radio talk show host. It let's try to
he's been through a lotty in you know, yeah, last time.
These guys will be on the field until July twenty fifth.
They are free to go, although they're not really.

Speaker 3 (27:29):
Free, so they're taking a World Cup break too.

Speaker 1 (27:31):
It sounds like, well, they're getting their rings tonight though,
so we'll ask We'll ask him about that. Yeah, they're
getting there. They're getting their rings tonight, their Super Bowl rings.
I think they're doing it in a couple of understanding,
a couple of different segments, football team, football operation staff,
and others kind of involved with the team directly getting
rings tonight. The rest of the staff here at the
Virginia Mason Athletic Center getting him in a couple months

(27:53):
as well. So yeah, really cool. Good for them for
a lot of people, people won't leave here by the
way they work here forever.

Speaker 3 (27:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (28:00):
So there's a lot of people in this building that
work hard behind the scenes, selling tickets, advertising, marketing, promotions,
all those.

Speaker 3 (28:07):
All that continues as a new ownership.

Speaker 1 (28:08):
I think it will. And with all those folks in there,
they're they're they're all going to get theirs and for
a lot of them is number two. All right, We're
gonna try this again. Huh, we're gonna this is gonna work.

Speaker 3 (28:17):
Oh, I hear him walking up.

Speaker 1 (28:20):
He is here, Drake Thomas is sitting down. Can you
hear me? Okay, yes, good? How about that? It's working today? Great?
I was just betching a moment ago when Drake came
in here on Tuesday. O. Our little old unit that
we had in here took a power hit or power surge.
It died a heroic death, Drake, it really did.

Speaker 6 (28:37):
Sure.

Speaker 1 (28:38):
Yeah, and you saw panic in the eyes of a
radio host trying to figure out how to get back
on the radio.

Speaker 3 (28:41):
Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 1 (28:42):
It's kind of like the same panic you see when
you're staring across it at a tight end trying to
block he or something right. Similar, Yeah, it's very similar.
How are you. I'm doing well, doing well. So it's
over until July twenty fifth.

Speaker 5 (28:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (28:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (28:56):
I had a good, good off season, great mini camp.
It was great being around the guys working together, getting
out on the field again, refreshing everything, and and uh, honestly,
just more than anything being back at there with the guys.

Speaker 1 (29:09):
So, Andrews, do you have the piece of audio for me?
Second goal down by ten?

Speaker 4 (29:17):
That ball was tipped I think tippicked all.

Speaker 11 (29:22):
Off the hands of mccaffrying into the arms of Drake Thomas.

Speaker 1 (29:27):
You had a smile on your face when you heard
like the first words out of Joe Buck's mouth. What
was that like? Surreal?

Speaker 6 (29:34):
Honestly? Yeah, I mean as soon as I think said
what second and ten or something? Yeah, I knew the
audio that was playing that moment was surreal.

Speaker 8 (29:43):
Uh.

Speaker 6 (29:44):
In the moment, I don't even think it registered. The
ball just popped up right in my hands. Just a
blessing right there?

Speaker 1 (29:50):
Can that play itself just walk us through what it
was because you made Everyone makes talks about the fact
that you made the play on the ball, like and
it was a ball scale play after McCaffrey, you know,
had it kind of there for a second, but you
had to make a terrific ball skill play. But you
also were right there like like I don't know if
you read the play something you guys have seen on tape,

(30:11):
but that's in football play, especially a huge play, it's
usually more than just making the play. There's a lot
leads up to that. How well prepared were you for
that play?

Speaker 6 (30:20):
Yeah, I mean that play is honestly, no matter how
prepared I was for that play. That's a difficult play
to make for a linebacker. In any situation, you're pretty
much one on one with the back and he has
a two way go on. He can go inside or
you can go outside, and he can work it however
he wants to that set. I knew that's what I
was gonna get that option round out of the backfield,

(30:41):
and we're taught to take inside leverage and have the
running back break outside. So but you know, when you're
on the ten yard line whatever, inside the red zone,
when you're that tight, there's not a lot of room
for error. So you know, as soon as you force
him to break out, you just got to be in
chase mode. So I mean, that's that's really the approach
I took. And you know, that's what happened, right Like,

(31:04):
I had him break out and I'm chasing him down,
just trying to in my mind, he bang bang play,
he catches it, I tackle and we live on seat
there down and then yeah, I mean I'm chasing the ball, pups.

Speaker 1 (31:14):
Up and it's like gotta get it, and it's that dude. Yeah,
how hard is that dude to defense? I mean, he's
a great player. He's a great player.

Speaker 6 (31:22):
Ball was a little bit I think got tipped or
something like that, Mafe tipped it. But yeah, he brings up.
He brings so many like matchup issues and problems that
that you got to be ready for. And he's a
hard guy to cover. He runs the ball hard. He's
a really good running back.

Speaker 1 (31:37):
Drake Thomas with me Ian Ferness here at the Virginia
Mason Athletics and we had a chance to talk to
Drake a couple times last season on the phone, but
great to see in person. I appreciate coming back and
all joking aside doing this again today. You're one of
the best. I love good stories. I think we all
love great stories. And we talked about this a few
times last season. You mentioned it. You're five to eleven,
two twenty eight. You weren't drafted. You had a hell

(31:58):
of a career, like a hell of a college career,
but you weren't drafted, and you've had to fight your
way up to get to that moment, and then the
next moment was three weeks later in the super Bowl
in that same stadium. Have you had a chance to
kind of take it all in and just think about
where you are now and where you were three or
four years ago.

Speaker 6 (32:14):
Yeah, Yeah, for sure, I'm definitely grateful for where I
am versus where I was. But I'm also grateful for
the entire journey. I've learned so much along the way.
I've taken so much from those experiences that I've been
through and carry with them with me now.

Speaker 1 (32:31):
That will help me.

Speaker 6 (32:33):
It only helped me grow going forward, get better as
a player, as a person in so many different ways.
So yeah, I mean I've reflected a lot on my
journey and what I've been through, and yeah, so I'm
definitely grateful.

Speaker 1 (32:47):
Drake. What is it. I mean, you're in a great situation,
but you're also playing for coach. It just you hear
this a lot from guys. You know, everyone's a good
chance to compete, Like all ninety guys out there today
have the same equal chance and all those things. But
it feels like this is a coach that truly does get.
I mean, I think you're one of those great examples.
Tyle Cott is a great example of that. There's a
lot of dudes out there that have been given like, hey,

(33:09):
just you show what we can do and you're gonna
be rewarded. How much of your journey do you also
give credit to Mike just to give you that opportunity.

Speaker 6 (33:18):
I mean, Mike, along with the whole staff, with the
whole organization, really they they there is a lot of
opportunity out there for young guys to make a name,
to work a role out for themselves. You just got
to show up every single day and be the same guy,
and you got to fit into what they're trying to build.
You got to buy into who we're trying to be
as a team, as an organization, and it's been made

(33:42):
clear that if you do that, then you're going to
be one of one of our guys. So, you know,
I give a lot of people credit, a lot of
people credit.

Speaker 5 (33:51):
Mike.

Speaker 6 (33:51):
You know, Ko has been my linebacker coach for the
past two years. Here a d the whole defensive staff,
the special teams. I mean, he believed in me to
start out on special teams and make an impact. The
front office for claiming me when I was in Vegas
and I was cut. I mean, there's a number of
people that I'm grateful for and I give credit to

(34:13):
for believing me and giving me opportunity to go beat
me if I was.

Speaker 1 (34:18):
In Vegas doing a radio show. I'd be like and
watching that game and that play, and like this dude
started fourteen games for the Super Bowl champions, the best
defense in the NFL. What hell are we doing here?
But that's that's neither here and there for you. But
fourteen games started, You've established yourself as a start in
the NFL. Do you feel comfortable? I mean, this is
such a cutthroat league. It's like you're here, you're gone,

(34:39):
Guys get cut, guys move and all that stuff. Is
there any part of you that allows yourself to say, Hey,
I walk into that locker room, this is my home,
this is where I should be re signed all those things.
But like, have you feel any comfort in that at all?
Or is you still like fighting like you got to
a I'm still fighting for a spot every day.

Speaker 6 (34:55):
I think the approach stays the same as far as
like that, like, yeah, I'm gonna work like I'm fighting
for a spot. Like that doesn't change, Like the process,
the approach, that the whole, the whole thing doesn't change.
Like I'm very comfortable and confident in who I am
as a player and a person when I walk in
the building. But that doesn't that doesn't like let me

(35:15):
relax on a day to day I'm still gonna attack
every single day and like basically just like empty the tank,
Like you know, I'm still that because that is me
all that, like everything that made me that that I've
been through and and brought me to here, Like that's
still who I am and that's what has got me here.
So like I'm not gonna change anything about myself because

(35:37):
I might be labeled as an NFL starter now, Like
I mean, it was the same way in college, like
I was. This is me and it's worked for me,
and I'm gonna I'm gonna buy all like buy into
it and I'm gonna stay true to myself.

Speaker 1 (35:49):
Drake Thomas with us, How different is it this year
as the defending champs? Does anything feel different? Is anything
approach differently how Mike does things, how you guys approach
mini camp and O TA? Is there anything any different
feel out there as a defending champs? I don't think so.

Speaker 6 (36:03):
It feels like, you know, the guys are just back
out there having fun playing football together. I don't think
there's some you know, like you don't feel like a
target on your back or anything. When you're out there
just having fun and just being in the moment, being
intentional to watch about about what you do and trying
to be the best players and team unit team as
you can be. It's not doesn't really feel very different.

(36:24):
It's it's the same thing. It's the same process. We
just start over again.

Speaker 1 (36:28):
Target's on a team in southern California. That's kind of good.
I mean, you guys kind of like that, right, Like
it's like everyone's there's people like Dan. I don't know
if you saw the quote. Dan Campbell had a great
quote the Lions coach. He's like, well, I guess they
already won the title, like whatever. It's like like it's
but that's kind of the feeling. It's like, wow, look
with the Rams, then you guys are defending champs and
people are probably gonna be looking elsewhere, which I think
you kind of like that, don't you. Doesn't this org
like it might kind of plays that up a little bit.

Speaker 6 (36:50):
I mean to me, either way, like whether people want
to put a target on our back or people want
to put it elsewhere and count us out, Like I
don't care.

Speaker 1 (36:59):
It is what it is.

Speaker 6 (37:00):
It doesn't change anything about I don't think it changed
anything about any of the guys processes or how they
approach it right day, Like, it doesn't shouldn't affect anything.

Speaker 1 (37:08):
Uh, tell me about yesterday. Now, I got an insider.
One of our guys, our producers, works at the Doug
Baldwin Center. How was the bat I heard there was
it was pretty competitive with you guys and the kids
out there yesterday. I was it. You know, it was
a lot of fun. We were playing some basketball with
the kids.

Speaker 6 (37:21):
Of course, it's gonna get a little competitive, it's just
us as athletes, right, But it was so much fun
going out there and playing basketball with those kids.

Speaker 1 (37:27):
What kind of game do you have?

Speaker 3 (37:29):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (37:30):
Basketball player at all?

Speaker 6 (37:31):
I mean, yeah, I grew up playing basketball like AAU
basketball When did the travel stuff and everything? I didn't
play in high school? Uh, but I mean I can
I can play. Yeah, I'm not. It's been a while though,
So like.

Speaker 1 (37:44):
How long did it take for you guys to kick in?
Like what did the kids say? Something like how long?
Because I heard it got fun? Like it was really fun. Yeah,
first of all, what a dream for those young people.
But what did it just like, all, hey, we're gonna
play you kids. Now, we're not messing.

Speaker 6 (37:56):
So yeah, we had a couple of different groups and
then like so there was a group that went to
the gym.

Speaker 1 (38:00):
First.

Speaker 6 (38:01):
I was going and torn some other places and I
came in the gym and I saw there playing. I
was like, in the back of my mind, I was like,
should I play? And it's like I want to play,
And so I ended up just saying like, I'm trying
to play next, and then we got into a game
and then went from there.

Speaker 1 (38:14):
I got next. Yeah, okay, I didn't because I was
wondering how much you play, like like, you know, you've
heard the term, like you know, Ellie fitness, try hard guy.
Yeah yeah? Is that sure? That does it come in?
Who's that guy? Who's that guy out there for you?

Speaker 6 (38:26):
I don't know. It might have been me. I don't
know that it might have been me. I mean it
got competitive out there, so I love. I'm not going
to back down.

Speaker 1 (38:33):
Hell no, that's that's why you're out of the situation
in right now. Two more things for you. One would
be this that what they did yesterday, what Mike did yesterday.
I just listened as a as someone who's been in
this community for a long time, and as a parent
and everything else, I thought it was awesome. And this
is the time of the year. There's some football coaches
be like, I only get X number of days and
minutes with these guys. We're gonna go every second we

(38:53):
can on football. But he you know, short walks through
yesterday and then you guys go do that whether the
VA Hospital, Children's, Royal McDonald house or Doug's place. Uh.
As a player, what does that mean? Because getting out
in the community is important, but at the same time
you have a coach that believes that's important too. Yeah,
it probably brings you guys together.

Speaker 6 (39:12):
Per I mean this, Uh, this whole thing is bigger
than just us, is bigger than wins and losses.

Speaker 3 (39:19):
Uh.

Speaker 6 (39:19):
This sports brought us a real platform and opportunity to
make a difference and touch people in different ways, you know, Uh,
make impact on people's lives. So I think that's our
responsibility and going out and trying to do that to
the best of our ability.

Speaker 3 (39:34):
Uh.

Speaker 6 (39:35):
So to to have a organization and coach that believes
that and sees it the same way, I think it's
pretty cool.

Speaker 1 (39:40):
I'll wrap it up with this. Uh. At some point
when you're done here and get a bite to eat
and shower and all that. You guys later on today,
get your rings. That's I mean, how jacked are you
to get I mean, that's it's all about. That doesn't
matter what sport you play, at what level you play,
it's about winning a title. But when you know that
there's a ring, and I know, I know from what
the last ones looked like. These guys don't spare any expense.

(40:04):
It's like Jody's Jody in Company. It's it's gonna be
something special. What's that going to mean? When you get
handed that ring.

Speaker 6 (40:10):
That's gonna be super special. I feel like you're at
the pinnacle of the sport. You know, when you win
the super Bowl and finally have that moment to get
that ring. That's what you dream of as a kid.
So I'm super excited to go do that tonight and honestly,
above all else, just celebrate and hang out with my guys.

Speaker 1 (40:25):
So what do you do with the ring?

Speaker 6 (40:26):
Probably put it in a safe and just keep it
there forever.

Speaker 1 (40:30):
Yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 6 (40:31):
I mean I probably won't be wearing it out in
public very.

Speaker 1 (40:33):
Often, but wait for the next one.

Speaker 6 (40:35):
Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 1 (40:36):
Drake Thomas. I really appreciate you coming in again. All
joking aside that you did two days this week and
this time it actually worked. Have a hell of a
few weeks off and we'll see you July twenty fifth.

Speaker 4 (41:14):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (41:15):
I mean, and they're playing in Mexico, so yeah, definitely.

Speaker 1 (41:18):
Baltimore Seattle wrap up their four game series at four

for Seattle. So that's good news there for Los Marineros.
By the way we just wrapped up. We like I
was part of it. They Seahawks just wrapped up their

end of July is when we'll be back here. Rett
training camp, mini caamp rather just wrapping up, OTAs wrapped
up and camp wrapping up as well. We had just
had if you just missed it, we had Drake Thomas
on through the top of the hour. Fun interview, great story, God,

(43:10):
the Raiders God, I mean, seriously, can you imagine, So
you're just think about this for a second. You're an
undrafted free agent, right, and he's undrafted because he's just
not big, like and he he bought into the LA
Fitness try hard guy. I kind of thought he would.
I thought he'd I thought he would. I thought he
would dance with me there.

Speaker 3 (43:29):
Well, you kind of have to be when you're not
like physically jumping off the page right five.

Speaker 1 (43:34):
Eleven, two twenty eight. And I'm going to question both
of those numbers. I'm just gonna tell you that right now.
But dude is a starting linebacker in the NFL. He
made one of the biggest plays of the season last
year in San Francisco against the forty nine ers Santa
Clara specifically, and that's a Mike McDonald guy. Like it's
just one hundred percent yeah. Like that's why I wanted

(43:54):
to ask him about breaking down the play because there's
a lot of do that are all joking aside, physically
more gifted than Drake Thomas, that's just you know, bigger, stronger, faster,
whatever the fact. But Mike McDonald is such a cerebral
coach and that play is only made because he's there,
Like he's exactly where he has to be, and as
he said, he goes, well, worst case scenario, I tackle

(44:16):
him and which seems to be easier said than done
with Christian McCaffrey most times, but he was there, like
he would have made the tackle if he catches the
ball and tackle him and live on for third and goal.
But he was there to make the play. Very cerebral player.
A great story. But God, you come out of college,
you're undrafted, and we'll go to the Raiders. I should
be able to make that team, right, they're awful cut
and I end up in Seattle and then two years

(44:38):
later I went a Super Bowl as a starter. Yeah,
pretty good story, Like pretty damn good story when it's
all said, and there's a lot of those on this team.
This is a franchise that has made a great living
over the years as a lot have. But on undrafted
free agents, we talked about Doug Baldwin's community center, undrafted
free agent, Jermaine Curse, undrafted free agent, You're starting center,
Jyalen Sendell, undrafted free agent. I mean, the list goes

(44:59):
on and on of guys that have made an impact
with this organization that that you know, didn't come in
with a lot of hype and ended up being big
time contributors to this team as they wrap up the
oh the mini camps and so forth. One of the
stories was interesting yesterday and it was brought up by
Greg today on his show that listen, the tackles are

(45:20):
under contract and they're healthy, and the tackles being obviously
Abe Lucas and Charles Cross, but you need a third tackle,
you need some depth at that position, and they went
Josh Jones. They signed him to a contract three million guaranteed.
And I thought one of the interesting storylines or comments
made yesterday by Mike McDonald was that Josh Jones, who

(45:43):
started a bunch of games for Cross last season and
is a was a key contributor to this football team,
like a big part of this football team. McDonald kind
of insinuating and hinting at that this dude needs to
get himself in shape, not just health wise, like he's
just not ready to practice. And you could tell the
tone on a couple of different answers from Mike McDonald yesterday,

(46:06):
like not too happy about that situation at all. And
they went out and they got the heart player from
Bobby Hart, who was on the on the street, started
seventy plus games in his career, twelve year veteran in
the NFL. So they went out and picked this guy
up off the street, and he's gonna come in and compete.
And you know if, like best case scenario, Bobby Hart

(46:28):
doesn't make the team, and sorry, Bobby Hart, my apologies,
but the best case scenario is, dude, you don't make
the team, right And Josh Jones, but Josh Jones got
to get healthy because keeping both your tackles and he's
the swing tackle, he played right or left side, if
Lucas and Cross, keeping them healthy all year, that's a challenge.
Just it just is hard to do sometimes. So we'll
see if they're able to do that and if Jones

(46:49):
gets back. But boy, that the accountability that McDonald holds
these guys to in his own stern way, I loved
that comment yesterday. We're gonna talk tomorrow to Corban and
I'm gonna guess he's gonna write this in the Animald
City Spectrum today. Corbyn will be with us tomorrow at too.
From Emerald City Spectrum. The Jalen Milroe experiment doesn't appear
to be going all that well now. He was missing

(47:11):
some throws again today. Just is he's a third round pick,
so I don't think he's going anywhere. I mean, Corbyn's
gonna come on tomorrow probably say I don't know if
he makes this team. I don't think you give up
on him after two years, but he's got some work
to do still. Probably pretty hard you're playing behind a
guy that's not going anywhere. In Sam Darnold and Drew
Locke is a quality backup player, like a quality quarterback,

(47:34):
so you're kind of an uphill battle. But yeah, he
Milroll wasn't great in mini camp and I don't know what.
We'll talk about that a little bit tomorrow as well.
Outside of that, the only other, the only other news
worthy item came out today and we'll get into more
with these guys tomorrow with with Corbyn cash Is Marsh
remember him, he was wandering around practice. Ye, I'm like,
what was this guy doing? He just signed a one

(47:54):
day contract. He retires as a Seahawk. He was drafted out,
drapped out of UCLA. Kind of cool. It just goes
to show game dudes come back here and and it's
just it's an amazing, amazing phenomenon to watch these guys.
But yeah, now they're off. I thought Drake Thomas's comments
about being kind of not the favorite, uh, and just
how they're approaching things. That's This is just the most

(48:18):
unassuming super Bowl champion I could ever imagine. Now we've
only had one to base that on, Andrews. Yeah, but
even a Super Bowl team that didn't win it in
twenty fourteen. Uh, these guys are just unassuming. I'm watching
I'll pull some stuff on social later watching Chinnan Nuosu
and Lawrence DeMarcus Lawrence work on the some pass rush durls,
just just the technique, the attention to detail. Watching all

(48:43):
these guys out there going to going through practice day
and competing hard.

Speaker 3 (48:46):
They do the little things, right, don't they.

Speaker 1 (48:48):
They do the little things. Yes, I think that's a
good way to put it. It's the little things that
they do. You know. Emon Warri was there again today
with the D lineman for a while kind of watching,
you know, doing some past like talking to Lawrence and
new about just like technique and it's hands And I
thought of it because you know, one of the things
that Hugh talked about when Miles Garrett was signed by
the Rams was I don't even say a weakness in

(49:11):
his game, because there's no weakness in Miles Garrett's game,
but he's he doesn't his strength doesn't necessarily include his handwork, right,
Like you know, and a lot of guys do mma
and martial arts and stuff like that D lineman that
is for hands, actually a offensive lineman do too. They
do a lot of that stuff boxing specifically things like that. Yeah,
But watching Lawrence and Nuosu even Worri go through some

(49:35):
of them. Derek Hall was there as well. Just those
little things with their hands, just elite hands, elite just
I'm I think this would be a healthy year. I
think it's great they don't see the Rams till the
end of the season. I think that's good. Yeah, I mean, honestly,
it should set it up perfectly for some great drama
those those two of those last three weeks or whatever
it is. So but away we go. But yeah, well
we'll put a kind of a bow on mini camp

(49:56):
with with Corbin tomorrow at two o'clock. He was out here, Greg.
I'm sure we'll have a lot to talk about tomorrow
at ten o'clock as well. In a way we go. Okay,
baseball team is gonna have four more games tonight and
then three this weekend against the Nationals in Washington before
they finally come home. We'll see Cal raw by the
way tomorrow, Softy Fain doing the showdown at Takomariniers, Right,

(50:20):
I do believe, yes, And Chuck Powells on the broadcast tomorrow, Chuckster,
they that'll be a Cal Rowley game. It seems like
they're not bringing him. That sounds like he's staying here
until the team gets back, so but we'll talk about
some of the things going on with the Mariners. Our
baseball guy, Ino Sarrus will join us coming up next
nine three point three KTERFM.

Speaker 2 (50:41):
It's time for our weekly visit with Eno Serro. So
the Athletics the best baseball insight you'll get from a
nerd with big league year. He likes picks of grips,
food and beer. Well, always greaming up the next big

Speaker 1 (51:18):
All right, here we go, you know, sarahs joined. This
is were's Regina Mason Athletic Center. Today. Seahawks wrapping up
the final day of mandatory mini camp. But we got
a guess a baseball coverage end though as well. Despite
the loss last night for the Mariners playing better lately.
A couple of things to tell you about our good
friends at Georgetown Brewing. By the way, the Father's Day
IPA is now there, bright orange and pine with a
little bitter kick. Ip is like lounging in a forest

(51:38):
canopy in a hammock made of tangarine peels. Perfect for
those hot summer days. ABV six point seven percent. I
think you can still find the juniors off of there. Yes,
you can, ABV five point four percent. Aroundto somebody yesterday
said this is one of the better beers. They've had
a lighter version of Bodhi's off for the summer months.
Ino Sarah's joins us right now. Hello, sir, how are you?

Speaker 12 (51:58):
I'm doing great. I need one of those for the
lake this afternoons up here.

Speaker 1 (52:04):
I head no vacation. Well, like I said, once you
get up here sometime and we'll get you all set up.
These guys will take care of you for sure. Hey,
before I get to some other things, marror pitching wise,
I just love getting the pitching stuff in with you.
You guys talked about Bryce Miller on the Rates and
Barrels podcast and what he's done since coming back and
becoming healthy this season. The strikeout to walk ratio is sensational.

(52:27):
What we're seeing is good. What are you seeing from
Bryce Miller right now?

Speaker 12 (52:32):
I mean one of the things that he talked to
me about when I saw him last year was he
was just shaking his head wondering where his fastball command was.
So it's nice to see the velo back and the
stuff back on the fastball. But really the most important
thing that I've seen is that the command is back
on the fastball.

Speaker 5 (52:49):
He is.

Speaker 12 (52:49):
You know, we have a location plus number that it
just looks at how good your locations are, and he's
been elite in that since he's come back, and I
think that's just really key because that's his best pitch,
you know. I mean, the splitter is good, the breaking
balls he's worked to a good point, but the fastballs
or everything starts, and so that the command of that

(53:10):
is great to see.

Speaker 1 (53:12):
We were wondering if he would go undergo surgery in
the offseason. I know you guys discussed that as well.
It feels like these days pictures, it's like everyone undergoes surgery.
It's like you have s it's an Oprah thing, you
have surgery, I'll have surgery. He didn't. Then just keeps right.
I mean it's kind of nuts, but I mean because
that was a concern. It's they have this embarrassment of
riches in a sense with six pictures. Also, you never

(53:33):
know when a guy's going to go down. But the
fact that he's able to come back as soon as
he has despite some health struggles all of last season
is impressive.

Speaker 2 (53:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 12 (53:42):
No, I mean what I gather is that bone spurs
are something where it's a pain threshold and you just
have to decide how much pain you're willing to undergo.
And and and I think pain is it can be
a problem because pictures, they tell me all the time
they're elite compensators, and so if they have pain somewhere,
they may alter their mechanics to avoid that pain, and

(54:04):
then you may create a problem somewhere else. So you know,
I'm not saying that what's going.

Speaker 1 (54:09):
On with Bryce.

Speaker 12 (54:09):
I don't know what's going on with Bryce. Maybe the
pain's gone away. You know that's something too. It can
dull over time. And all it is is there's some
some loose bodies in there. He decided not to get
out there's been plenty of people who decided not to
have surgery to get the loose bodies out and uh,
and then there's this new surgery that Trek Scoogele did

(54:30):
that's called nanosurgery that can limit the recovery time to uh,
you know, as little as a month. You know, school
is not going to be out the two months that
they expected. He looks like he's gonna be back any day.
So you know, even if it does happen, if he
does decide to go into the Knight and may not,
it doesn't sound like, you know, it's the big one.

(54:52):
It sounds more like a little one. And for now
he's avoiding him.

Speaker 1 (54:57):
Yeah, so other School's come back. I think he's pitching
Schools pitching Saturday Believe coming back as well, which will
be a boost to a team that's twelve games under
five hundred but five and a half out of the wildcard. Berth.
You guys, I know, looking around like we are right
now at how you know, just convoluted? I guess just
how compressed this American league is right now? Never too
early to talk wildcard, never too early to talk trade deadline.

(55:19):
How many teams are really in it in the American League, Like,
is it just the Angels and that's it, that's out
of it.

Speaker 12 (55:26):
Yeah, I think pretty much anybody's in it. And you
know what's going to happen is that I think people
are going to wait until late into the deadline. I
don't think we're going to see early deals in the
AL because everyone's a buyer and no one's a seller,
and everyone wants to wait and see, you know, basically
what their record is and what their playoff odds are

(55:46):
the last minute. So you may also mean a mute
at deadline in terms of smaller deals, because nobody really
wants to get in a position where there's three sellers
in the entire league and they have two players that
really wants and they're all bitting against each other those.

Speaker 1 (56:02):
Two players, you know. Sarah Jonas courtesy of Georgetown Brewing
with the Virginia Mason Athletic Center seat Mini camp just
wrapped up a short time ago.

Speaker 9 (56:10):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (56:11):
You know, I I love to get a perception of
he might be my favorite Mariner just because I like
he plays like a on the on the edge. But
I know not everyone loves our friend Josh Naylor, the
Canadian from north of the border, especially a team that
is close to his hometown in Detroit. Uh, just across
the river from him as well, or in the lake
Josh Naylor, how does he put it too far on

(56:34):
the edge some of the stuff he does at times?
The throwing of the of the you know, it was
an accident, throwing of the oven mint, you know, bumping
guys at first base, what have you. He didn't seem
to mind getting thrown out afterwards. But how uh, what's
the perception of Josh Naylor outside of here?

Speaker 12 (56:50):
Yeah, I don't think that it is super positive in
certain fan bases, but there are other fan bases, you know,
because he's been in different places, you know, anywhere he's been,
the fan base love them. So I think Arizona still
loves him, and Cleveland still loves them. He's just one
of those guys where when he's going a bat for
your team and he's, you know, doing these things for
your team, and he does everything it takes to win,

(57:12):
you know, like he's he's he's looking like he's stealing
signs the second you don't even know if he has
a sign. He might just be trying to get in
your head. You know, he's putting arms up and waving
his arm, clapping his arms around, making the pictures think,
oh my god, he's telling them breaking ball or whatever
it is, so you know, or he's throwing his mid
or he's he's he's stealing when he's slow, you know,

(57:32):
like he's he's just trying to wring every possible advantage
out of every moment in the game. And so you can,
I think even if you dislike him, you kind of
have to respect it. It's like it's just, uh, he's
he's he's like always got to turn up to eleven,
you know what I mean, it's it's uh, it's great
for for baseball too, I think.

Speaker 1 (57:52):
Is I mean, this is a sports cliche. He feels
sort of like a and just even how the uniform
looks and everything else is kind of a throwback. Who
else is like that out there? Like like who's a Josh?
Like there's got to be guys like we look at him.
I mean, in Seattle, we don't like the Astros, but
really there's nothing other than the fact that the trash
cans and that's it and they didn't really affect us
but out here, But who else is a guy that's

(58:13):
like Nailor around baseball that people would love to have.
It's kind of that same guy, right, you want to
have Howky. We talk about this in hockey all the time,
like you'd love to have him on your team, but
you hate when you have to play against him.

Speaker 12 (58:24):
God, I can't, I can't even I can't think of
it right now.

Speaker 1 (58:26):
Sorry, you know what, that's really good thing that's probably
take along the way, yep. I.

Speaker 12 (58:37):
I kind of think of the opposite, which is Manny
Machado's sort of you know, sweet swing and smile and
like just sort of nonchalant. You know. It's kind of
like an opposite feel, you know, and that could be
good too, because you're like because you're like never panic,
you know. I feel like if you've got Manam Senior,
never panicked. So everything's really kind of my me of

(59:00):
how some managers are like upbeat, crazy managers, and some
managers are, you know, just going to be more quiet types.

Speaker 1 (59:09):
That's our guy Dan Wilson here, who's who's feels like
some of the heats calm down with him a little bit,
which is nice. H The Ams finish up in Baltimore
later today and then they go to Washington Nationals. I
mean it's a they're in a tough division with the
with the Braves, but they're hanging around the wild card
race as well. I think that's a team. I'm curious
about what you read on the Washington Nationals who the

(59:29):
MC before they come home after this long road trip.

Speaker 12 (59:33):
I mean, they're playing with found money and they're exciting
and stuff, but they they're bullpen is maybe the worst
in the league. And you know, I think that they're
going to come back to earth a little bit. They're
pitching needs some long term help. They're still working on
it under the under the covers, and it's you know,
it's also a lesson to teams that how many wins
are out there if you just do the things that

(59:53):
everybody else does, if you just do the work, you
know in terms of you know, planning and buying a
traject and you know, getting all the all the all
the tech up to a certain level. You know, like
if you just if you do that work, then there's
there's wins out.

Speaker 3 (01:00:11):
There for you.

Speaker 1 (01:00:13):
Bullpen issues. That's what we got here in Seattle with
this six man rotation. Short bullpen guys not available. I mean,
it kind of kind of bit them a little bit
last night along the way. I'll wrap it up with this,
how because this has been a talk here, you know,
in our in our market a little bit. How much
does that six man rotation hurt you when you have
to go to the bullpen.

Speaker 12 (01:00:34):
Yeah, you're definitely down a den of person in the
uh in the in the bullpen. So you're gonna have
to work some up downs like you're gonna have to,
you know, make sure you're careful about who you're getting hot,
and you have to be careful about options and using
your options and bringing somebody a fresh arm up at
the right time. So that is that, that was the

(01:00:57):
the the issue. I mean, if you piggyback, you can
at least maybe you know, you a whole game use
only two pitchers. That was the nice thing about the piggyback. So, yeah,
you love it. You're hurting yourself one way to the other.

Speaker 1 (01:01:08):
Yeah, Well, listen, you got a vacation in a lake
and hopefully a cold beverage in your hand. In the
meantime when you aren't on vacation, tell folks about the
Rats and Barrels podcast. Also, you can read ENO's work
at the athletic but tell them about the Raates and
Barrels podcast for us, our baseball junkies out here in Seattle.

Speaker 12 (01:01:24):
Yeah, thanks for on. Every day. We got Jed Lowring
and Trevor May breaking it down from the player perspectives.
And I won't be there for the next.

Speaker 9 (01:01:33):
Couple of days.

Speaker 12 (01:01:33):
I'll be by the by the lake. But we're always
doing it from sort of a stable metric, sort of
analytics perspective. But we've got the real life players helping
us make sure we don't get too nerdy.

Speaker 1 (01:01:45):
No, I love it. That's why we love having you
on as well. Every week. Go and enjoy your vacation
and hopefully some sunshine and we will talk next week,
you know. Thank you, Thank you Io sarahs joining us
here on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. Appreciate his time. All

hiring of Patrick Alvin as an assistant GM for the
Crack and it's significant because he was a sitting general
manager in the league last year with the Vancouver Canucks.
Will do that top of the hour. Thomas Drants from
Vancouver will join us before I go back to the NHL.
Just a quick note, The Sale Tort have a new coach,

(01:03:16):
Christine brump Bumpstead named the new head coach of the
Sale Torrent. Second, Hey, are the Torrent getting criticized for
firing coaches after one year?

Speaker 3 (01:03:24):
I don't know. I'm not in Torrent Twitter.

Speaker 1 (01:03:27):
Can you check Torrent Twitter? It might be right next
to crack and Twitter, all right? Can you check check
with the Emerald City Hockey guys or whatever the hell
they're called, yah, and see if they're upset about this
one too. Bumpstead joins a Torrent after four seasons assistant
coach for the Universitist and Scotchwand Huskies. Also was coaching

(01:03:47):
at the same time in player development with the Western
Hockey League Saskatoon Blades, first female coach appointed to a
WHL championship staff. How about that a different game, though, god,
really different game. Western Hockey League did Pete Whlson? Yeah? Anyway,
so she's here, she's a new coach. She takes over

(01:04:08):
for Steve O'Rourke, who was turfed after one season behind
the torrent bench. Stanley Cup Finals resumed tonight five o'clock Raleigh,
North Carolina, Anders, Carolina Hurricanes, Vegas Golden Knights tied two
games apiece, the most goals in forty five years in

(01:04:31):
the Stanley Cup Final to the first four games. Every
team's had a multi goal lead in every game. Are
in games there's been multi goalides and everybody's lost that
multi goal lead at one point. Doesn't mean they're going
to lose the game, right But in a very San
Antonio Spurs like display man, no no lead is safe.

(01:04:53):
Apparently is good good off? I don't think either. Well,
I thought Bussy was better the other night. I don't
think Frederick's been very good. Anderson in for for Carolina.
I don't think he's good anyway. And Carter Hart.

Speaker 3 (01:05:10):
Has not been good, not been great.

Speaker 1 (01:05:13):
He was good the first three series. He just hasn't
been great now. But there's been I mean, I don't
know if it's so hard because there's so many goals.
Yeah to say how there's been some bad ones. I
know their goals saved above expectance on the negative range.
So yeah, they're they're not They're not great, great series.
Give me, give me more, give me seven. Yeah, huh yeah, absolutely,

(01:05:33):
give me seven. I'm just looking here, did it do?
Game five winners? And the Stanley Cup's final series is
tied to two?

Speaker 6 (01:05:43):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (01:05:44):
Florida, Saint Louis, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Chicago. So the last one, two, three, four,
five teams where it was to two and then in
game five gave they went on to win.

Speaker 3 (01:05:57):
Yeah, yep, yeah, so that's about right. I would say,
don't don't say that's a Mariner fans in.

Speaker 1 (01:06:03):
I'm gonna say this is a pivotal game tonight. I
know that's that's the analysis you're looking for. Pivotal game,
excellent analysis. I'll take you, thank you very much. I'm
here give your expert. All right, that's you Daily power Player.
I brought you by your Squahanta Caboda big thanks to them.
We got a little Mirader's news. What do you got
we do?

Speaker 3 (01:06:18):
According to Daniel Kramer, Matt Brash has returned to Seattle
for further evaluation on the rat lat stream that has
landed him on the IL for the second time this season,
and quote from Dan Wilson saying, it seems like this
is going to be a little bit more time down
than he was the last time.

Speaker 1 (01:06:36):
Well, that doesn't sound good. I listen, I'm that doesn't
sound good. No, it doesn't like does that sound like
that's the opposite of good?

Speaker 3 (01:06:46):
No, very not good, especially for a guy who missed
all of twenty twenty three, twenty twenty four, excuse me,
four years with Tommy John, didn't even start the twenty
twenty five season until halfway through the year, then had
an injury kind of issue earlier this year and spent
time on the aisle, and now is going back on
the aisle and it seems like it's going to be

(01:07:07):
a decent amount of time missed for him.

Speaker 1 (01:07:09):
So that's just sensational. Yeah, that is just sensational.

Speaker 3 (01:07:12):
Not ideal.

Speaker 1 (01:07:15):
Uh, I don't even know. I was going to say
this with with this this baseball team and how they're constructed,
I felt like, especially if you get it, squeeze and
they'll get it. They don't get an off day until Monday.
They get an off day Monday, and that'll be big
when they do get an off day and they are

(01:07:35):
or they get I mean really honestly, one of the
better days they had was when they had Miller and
Castile allowed the bullpen not to be used at all. Right,
it feels to me like there's a strength this team
that doesn't get talked about enough. Are the leverage arms
of the bullpen. Yes, not name not named munos because
if you listen, aspire and for Rare to like really

(01:07:56):
like that's kind of an embarrassment of riches.

Speaker 3 (01:07:58):
It is an embarrassment of riches. And I know for
blows the save the other night.

Speaker 1 (01:08:01):
It's whatever, right, And he wasn't he pitching his like
his third third day and fourty third.

Speaker 3 (01:08:05):
Time in four days and he had over forty pitches
that in. Yeah, he just ran out a little bit
that was out of necessity.

Speaker 1 (01:08:10):
I mean, yeah, those two lefties when Brash is right right,
like when he's when he's going well and he's okay,
and then you got Munos like there, that's a pretty good.

Speaker 3 (01:08:21):
That's a damn good, especially when you had in Bizardo.

Speaker 1 (01:08:23):
So you have bizarre.

Speaker 3 (01:08:24):
Yeah, five guys that you feel like at least have
some confidence in a high leverage situation. Not many teams
can say that.

Speaker 1 (01:08:31):
It changes quickly if you lose a guy like yeah,
all right, big moves today by the Crack and we'll
talk about that next nine three point three KJFM.

Speaker 2 (01:08:41):
No from the Star Rentals Sports to us your ninety
three point three kJ r FM sports headlines.

Speaker 1 (01:08:47):
All right, headlines watched by Frostbrey cors I choose Chill
with the Virginia Mason Athletic Center Seahawks. Just wrapping up
last day of mini camp. They're off until July twenty fifth.
We had Drake Thomas starting linebacker on earlier. That'll be
podcast after the show is over. Nothing really newsy outside
of that. Today. Crack can have an assistant GM. We're
gonna talk about that in a second. Patrick Alvin, formerly
in the Vancouver Canucks, now he's an assistant GM with Seattle.

(01:09:09):
He was a GM up in Vancouver, at least in name.
We'll find out more about him in just a moment.
Torreon have a new head coach, Christine Bumpstead, used to
be working at the University of Saskatchewan, also with the
Western Hockey League Saskatoon Blaze, takes over for Steve O'Rourke,
fired after just one season with the torrent Mariner's losing
last night. Back at it tonight, wrapping up a four

(01:09:29):
game series with Baltimore. Four o'clock, first pitch on National
TV on EESP n n oh. How about the Stanley
Cup Finals Game five tonight? Johnny foresln Eddy Old Check
on the call right here on ninety three point three KJFM,
Curtisy of Sports USA five o'clock again dropping the puck
for Game five. Series tied two games apiece and the
Spurs blow a massive lead and now trail three games

(01:09:50):
to one of the NBA Finals. As a head back
to San Antonio Knicks with a win last night, let's go.

Speaker 2 (01:09:56):
Now back to Ian Furness is on your home for
the Huskies, Crack and the Twelfth Man, brought to you
by Seattle's closest Snow Call Me Casino and Hotel on
Sports Radio ninety three point three KJR FM.

Speaker 1 (01:10:10):
Hi before the end of the segment. Andrews will give
us an update at the end after we check in
with our special guest coming up in a second on
what's going on in the World Cup. Done in Mexico City,
but right now joining us in the Beacon Pumping hotline.
Senior writer for the Athletic NHL covering the Canucks, also
does some radio up in Vancouver Canucks Talk on sports
Net six fifty. Thomas Drantz joins us right now. Hi, Thomas,

(01:10:30):
how are you hey?

Speaker 3 (01:10:32):
And thanks for having me.

Speaker 1 (01:10:33):
Hey, I appreciate you sticking around after your show is
over because I wanted to get my context. I wanted
to get some context. Patrick Alvin today hired as the
assistant GM to Jason Boder with the Crack in there
still going through their audit with Sportsology, which I think
we're gonna hear some stuff on soon, but they're already
making a move here Alvin, And I'm gonna paint this

(01:10:55):
picture because I don't think it's accurate, because I want
That's why I want to have you one, because I
know Andrews, are you tell tell me that Crack and
Twitter's upset today.

Speaker 3 (01:11:02):
No, yeah, I mean it's pretty surprising. They're normally very happy.

Speaker 1 (01:11:05):
People, Tomas, you would be stunned to know that crack
and Twitter, while less in terms of volume than Canucks Twitter,
has the same tenor to it at times. Not the
most positive environment, not the most positive environment. But here's
where I'll start the cracking today. Hired an assistant GM
who was just fired by your arrival to the North,
who had the worst wrecor in the NHL last season,

(01:11:25):
and Patrick Elvine. People like, what the hell are they doing? Who?
And what is Patrick Alvin? How much responsibility did he
bear for what's gone on in Vancouver the last couple
of years.

Speaker 11 (01:11:34):
Well, he definitely had a lot of responsibility up here
in terms of the day to day responsibilities managing and
administering the team, in terms of having final say on trades, signings,
et cetera. You know, he wasn't the head of hockey operations.
That was President of Hockey Operations, Jim Rutherford. I still

(01:11:55):
think there's, you know, a fair number of moves that
would have been executed by him shaped by him pretty
significantly during his tenure in Vancouver. And that's for good
and for ill for the most part. You know, I
would say to fans skeptical about it, there's the guy
who had options, right. I mean, it's not just the

(01:12:17):
AGM title, right, He's also a VP, so he got
a pretty big title here. I'd imagine it was a
pretty lucrative front office job, not a GM job, but
the next best thing. And that reflects the fact that
I think there were a number of teams very eager
to bring him in. This is the guy who has
twenty plus years of experience as a amateur scout, specifically

(01:12:41):
a European scout for breaking into the industry in Montreal
and ultimately in Pittsburgh, became an assistant general manager with
the Penguins and then the Canucks general manager. He also
was briefly an interim general manager during his time with
the Penguins organization. You know, he's been part of very
successful management teams and obviously has a relationship built in

(01:13:04):
with Jason Bottrel from their shared tenure in Pittsburgh, during
which the Penguins won back to back Stanley Cups. In
terms of his work in Vancouver, you know, I think
they got the big picture wrong more than anything else
in terms of pushing forward with a corps that just
wasn't ever going to be good enough to sustain success
and contend credibly. But the individual moves and the way

(01:13:28):
that this front office functioned under Alvin's watch, I think
has a lot to recommend it. You know, the team's
cap management. They are sort of professionalization of the player
development pathway, and especially in the American League during Alvin's
tenure as general manager, was all very good. He's buttoned up,

(01:13:49):
He's a really capable administrator, and his ability to evaluate talent,
especially amateur talents, pretty highly regarded in the industry, even
if his general yeah, general managerial tenure in Vancouver left
a fair bit on the table. So what I'd tell
Krack and fans disappointed is that this is a draw
that they won, Like, this is a draws that they won,

(01:14:11):
probably shaped at least in part by the fact that
Alvin's going to be able to keep his family on
the West coast, right, that's useful. But nonetheless, I think
there was at least some measure of surprise when Seattle
heated up as a potential destination for Patrick that it
wasn't gonna be Minnesota, where Bill Garrin, another of that

(01:14:32):
sort of Penguins, that Pittsburgh Boys Crew, you know, and
Alvin are like best friends. And of course Minnesota lost
their their director of amateur scouting, jud Brackett when he
took an a GM job with the Maple Leaf. So
I think there was a lot of anticipation around the business,
certainly a month ago that Alvin might be Minnesota bound,
and I would say, you know, recruiting him to Seattle

(01:14:54):
instead feels like a pretty standard win to me, even
if the optics of sort of executing a higher before
turning the results.

Speaker 7 (01:15:00):
Of the.

Speaker 3 (01:15:03):
You know, audit is a little bit odd.

Speaker 1 (01:15:05):
Yeah, Thomas trans joining us. I've seen a writer for
the Athletic also does a show up in Vancouver and
U and actually in addition to coming to the Canucks,
if you watched and look through the Athletic, he'll do
some cracking things every now and then as he's in
our area. And we appreciate that coverage too from the Athletic. Thomas.
I think that's an important part, because the optics are
one thing, and just to kind of paint the picture again,

(01:15:26):
I feel like I feel like we have to I
have to a lot of times try to re educate
folks down here. This is a different situation Ron Francis
when he was, for lack of a better term, kicked
upstairs last summer, Jason Bottrell took over and had final
say it was it was Bot's running the show. That
was and there's this feeling like it was still the

(01:15:47):
same old, same ale. That was not the case Vancouver,
And I think Andrews, you used this term earlier when
we were talking about it with Jim Rutherford and Patrick Alvin,
that was a lot more like we were used to
with Jerry Depoto running the Mariners and the GM justin
Hollander is kind of day to day. So I think
that's an important distinction here, is that Patrick Evian's it's
not bots in Francis up there, it's a lot different

(01:16:09):
situation than that up in Vancouver.

Speaker 11 (01:16:14):
Yeah, Alvin was making the phone calls presenting scenarios, but
the final decision, the final decision making authority rested with
Jim Rutherford, and I think that's very clear. That was
very clear throughout their tenure. And you know, for the
most part, I thought the administrative work during during Alvin's
tenure in Vancouver was pretty good, solid at the very

(01:16:36):
least in terms of the team that they built and
how they functioned, even if the results obviously left more
than a lot.

Speaker 5 (01:16:42):
To be desired.

Speaker 1 (01:16:44):
Thomas, just this off season for Seattle, it's and the
audist going on. We think something's coming down the pipe
here in the next week or two. We'll see what
those results are. They've already been making moves. They had
another assistant coach today as well, Jessica Campbell's gone, replacing
somebody in the video staff. So there's a little minor
things going on. Patrick Glvin being added to the mix
as well. At the top of the list, and you're

(01:17:05):
following this very closely, I'm sure north of the border,
the top of the list for Seattle is Bobby McMahon.
They're unrestricted free agent. You know, every day that goes by,
it feels more and more like he may try to
test free agency. He was effusive in his praise for
the organization for Lane Lambert everything else, but money does talk.
Are you hearing anything in terms of Bobby McMahon and
the market for him.

Speaker 11 (01:17:25):
Not specifically, but I can tell you that any free
agent who makes it to market is going to do
very well, we're in a world where the cap is
growing for the first time in basically a decade at
the NHL level. And as your listeners will be familiar
with when they think about the NFL, right, you know
how every contract every year is now the new highest
paid quarterback contract, or the new highest paid wide receiver contract,

(01:17:48):
or the new highest paid left That's what's coming to hockey. Eventually,
It's going to take some time because a lot of
these guys sign long term, so the good players are
going to take a while to come to market. But
you know, that's effectively, like the reason that hasn't happened
in hockey is simply that the cap has been artificially
restrained by sort of an agreement between the players union

(01:18:10):
and the league that was made during the pandemic to
sort of get play restarted, even before the Kraken were,
you know, hosting their expansion draft and be sort of
having their inaugural season. So it's effectively been like an
artificially depressed cap environment around the league.

Speaker 1 (01:18:26):
And that time is over.

Speaker 11 (01:18:27):
Teams now are going to have more cap space in aggregate,
then they have good players to spend it on. In
McMahon's case, that means he might be like the third
best winger on the market if he does get there,
And you know, the amount of cap space and cash
that teams are going to have to splash and how
few other good options they're going to have is only

(01:18:50):
going to inflate the demand for his services. So you know,
my mind in to be totally honest with you, The
Krakens issue since inception has been a lack of star players.
And I think they know this, and I think we
know they know this because of their pursuit of our
Timmy Panaren prior to the Olympic break this past spring.

(01:19:11):
They need stars. They don't need good players like Bobby McMahon.
They have a lot of good players. They've often had
a lot of good players. In fact, this team's usually
been pretty deep with good players. What they've lacked is
the difference makers, the star level players. You know, Maddyveniers
hasn't quite gotten there. Obviously, Shane Wright hasn't quite gotten there.
You know, they have some really good defensemen, they have

(01:19:33):
some solid forward depth. They've placed some interesting reclamation bets
on guys like Capocco that have paid off. And it
doesn't matter because this is the starter of the league.
You fundamentally need great players to win, and one of
the issues the Kracking have had is that they kind
of haven't been bad enough to hang out in this

(01:19:54):
part of the draft where you get you know, first.

Speaker 3 (01:19:56):
Dips access to those guys.

Speaker 11 (01:19:58):
They're picking what seventh in the draft order this year,
they'll get a really good prospect, but there's going to
be a material difference between that really good prospect and
your McKenna ivar Stenberg types that will go one too
at the NHL Entry Draft, And those are the types
of players, those are the types of difference makers that
the Kraken need. So, you know, in my mind anyway,

(01:20:19):
I think it was fine given sort of how Seattle
was pacing and where they were in the standings, and
how important it is in your market for that to
stand out in a crowded field to buy. But I
don't know that you necessarily have to chase it by
breaking the bank for a Bobby McMahon type. You know,

(01:20:40):
More than anything, I think the Kraken need to be
diligent in avoiding the small move that maybe prevents you
down the line from making the sort of big move
the tectonic you know, Land the big star type player
trade that I think the krack and need to need
to accomplish or pull off more than they need just
about anything. So, you know, really the storyline that I'm

(01:21:03):
most closely monitoring in Seattle is the Shane Wright saga
and whether or not that's a shit that they end
up playing over the course of this offseason, perhaps in
pursuit of, you know, a player that has a shot
or is already established as a top of the lineup
type piece.

Speaker 1 (01:21:22):
I agree with you. I'll wrap it up with this.
First of all, I could agree with you more. I mean,
they've got a really and that's the difference because people
want to throw around the term rebuild all the time.
You guys are going through that in Vancouver on a
daily basis. I'm sure that that word has been used
as a zillion times. Yeah, right, and they're finally kind
of going down that road a little bit in that
market they can afford to do so with you know,
kind of about all due respect to the BC lines

(01:21:42):
and the white Caps a one horse town, we're different
down here in Seattle with the competitive market, as you mentioned, Thomas,
so I would I would ask you this with with
the core in place that you know, what they've got
on the back end, with the goaltending depth that they've
got groovy bouncing back last season to Cords. Fine, what
they've got up front, which is feels like a lot
of second and third line guys, which is good. You
need to build around that this next four weeks or

(01:22:05):
so as we head into July first and free agency,
draft weekend and all that. What can the Krack and
fans look forward to. Is there a possibility that they
can make some moves and make that shift using a
Shane Rder what have you, Because they're not going to
get a star necessarily, it's going to help you right away.
As you mentioned the draft, what would you tell Krack
and fans what can they hope happens over the next
few weeks.

Speaker 11 (01:22:27):
Well, first of all, it's a pretty flat draft class.
You know, there's not a big fall off really from
where the Canucks are picking at three and where the
Kraken are picking at seven and where the Panthers are
picking at nine. So there's every reason to believe that
if the Krake can end up emerging from this draft
with Vigo b York or Daxon Rudolph or what have you,
that we may look back on it two years down

(01:22:48):
the line, three years down the line and say the
Cracking got the best player. So that's right there, useful
position for the Kracking to be in, even if it's
not one of the top wingers that they probably need
more than any anything else. Shane Wright, you know, that
situation is fascinating. I'm a big fan of the player.
I still believe strongly that he can be a really
good second line type center on a good team, but

(01:23:11):
more in the Sam Bennett mold for a team that
needs a Barkov right, Like, that's the issue that the
Kraken are bumping into. I think there'd be some teams
some other distressed assets, you know, sort of looking for
in one of those other young players who are who
are in a situation where maybe they could use a
change of scenery. I think about like a Matt Bay
Mitchikov in Philadelphia. Is there a world where the Kraken

(01:23:33):
can find, you know, a team that wants to bet
on Shane Wright and is willing to part with their own,
you know, high end star potential young player in order
to do so. You'd think so, especially given that Wright
has the unique profile of being a right handed centerman
right the premium position. You'd think they that that would
be a very very palatable asset to be shopping around

(01:23:56):
the league. If the Kraken wanted to make a splash,
and to be totally honest with you, I think the
Krack can need to make a splash. I'd like to
see them be extremely aggressive. I think they need to
take a shot at getting a real star, a sort
of face of the franchise level guy. They're not easy
to come by, but I do think the Crack can
have some of the pieces that you'd want to have

(01:24:16):
if you were going shopping in that sort of marketplace.
And so, you know, I'll be fascinated to see what
the results of the audit are and I'll be fascinated
to see what sort of steps they take. I just
don't think you can sort of keep patiently stoking, you know,
what's effectively been a fire producing far too little heat
across the last five years. I think the time for
dramatic action, like figure out if you can make this

(01:24:38):
work with the pieces you currently have, or start the
rebuild sooner than later, because before we know it, you
know it's going to have been a decade in Seattle
and sort of one playoff series win is going to
be enough.

Speaker 1 (01:24:53):
Everything you said I echo. I think you said it
very well and perfectly, and I appreciate you sticking around
after your show.

Speaker 11 (01:24:59):
Thank you, Hey, anything for you, buddy, Thanks for having me.

Speaker 1 (01:25:03):
Thomas Strantz joining us from Vancouver with some some great
thoughts on not just the new assistant GM, but also
what the team needs looking forward. We'll touch it on that.

Speaker 3 (01:25:13):
Agree more with what he said there.

Speaker 1 (01:25:14):
Yeah, we'll touch it on that in the next segment
four nine, four to five one as well on the
Tacoma dotch text line. We'll check all your text for
whatever you're talking about today, Seahawks, Mariners, what's going on
in the NBA finals and NHL, what have you cracking,
et cetera. Andrews, I need an update on the World Cup.
First match of the year.

Speaker 3 (01:25:29):
We do have a final two zero Mexico versus South Africa.
There was three red cards in the the more red
cards than goals, yes, but hey, I'm all for the
entertainment value, right, So you got two of those red
cards on South Africa, one of them on Mexico late
in the game. So that might affect him later in
the tournament if he has to be suspended. All that
stuff can kind of.

Speaker 1 (01:25:49):
Be followed with, well, that's right, that's actually a big thing.

Speaker 3 (01:25:53):
Yes, red cards suspends you for the next game.

Speaker 1 (01:25:56):
Yeah, oh yeah, that's not just oh I forgot about.

Speaker 3 (01:25:59):
You're up to zero. Oh and it was like five
minutes left and you get a red card and all
of a sudden, like you kind of screwed yourself for
the next game.

Speaker 1 (01:26:05):
So the guy that scored the second goal for Mexico,
great story, real quick.

Speaker 3 (01:26:09):
Yeah, Raoul Jimenez. First of all, you mentioned something in
the break where he fractured his skull a few years ago.
If you noticed the guy that scored their second goal,
he wears this kind of headband with a little patch
on the right side of his head, kind of where
his temple is, and that's to give extra protection because
he did, like I said, fractured his goal in a

(01:26:30):
collision earlier in his career, so he has to wear
that every single time. But the other great thing is
his dad, well not great thing, but a great part
of the story is his dad passed away earlier this
year and that was his first World Cup goal. That
he scored in his career. He's one of Mexico's best players.
And he did it on home turf at the Mexico
City Stadium, I should say. And it was just you

(01:26:54):
could tell how emotional of a moment it was for him.
So anyone who maybe has seen video that, go ahead
and check it out because it's really cool.

Speaker 1 (01:27:02):
Yeah, very emotional after that goal. And yeah, I mean
not the it's not the story you love when someone
passes away, but he's come back from the fractor's skull,
but scoring my memory of his father is pretty awesome too.
So all right, and of course we get all the
action nine to fifty on the AM. We're getting the
game later on tonight, Jackson and the Boys, Andrews. Everybody's
got the analysis. iHeartRadio app. Just go check that out

(01:27:22):
at jagree.

Speaker 3 (01:27:23):
Be sure to check out my daily podcast as well,
the World Soccer Championship Daily Recap Show, brought to you
by Launa. You can hear it on ninety three point
three KJRFM or nine to fifty depending on if there's
a game from seven to eight pm every weeknight.

Speaker 1 (01:27:38):
God, you guys are busy. I love it. Yes, go
after it, all right, we'll come back check your text next.

Speaker 2 (01:27:45):
Now back to Ian Furness on your home for the Huskies,
Crack It and the Twelfth Man, brought to you by
Seattle's closest Snow call Me Casino and Hotel. On Sports
Radio ninety three point three KJR FM.

Speaker 1 (01:28:01):
All right, four four five on that is the Tacoma
Dodge text line four nine four five one two oh six.
Spoiler alert all Caps. You don't know the results in
the Mexico South Africa. I'm sorry, man, I like, I'm
just not going to play that game. I'm just not sorry.
I apologize in advance.

Speaker 3 (01:28:16):
I'm not We're doing our job, man, Hike.

Speaker 1 (01:28:18):
Yeah, and here's the thing with the World Cup, it's
we are so invested as a company, and iHeart what
you guys are doing, you and Jackson everybody else. And
also like, I'll here's something that I'll throw this at you.
So as I sit here at the Virginia Mason Athletics Center,
day three of mandatory minicamp, which just comes to down
big thanks to Drake Thomas who joined us early. If

(01:28:39):
you missed that interview and a podcast, Yes, just a
great story. Good dude. The the media room here. We
have they put a massive TV in here last year,
kind of upgraded our television that we have here, which
is kind of nice. And you know, it's we had
we've had the World Cup on and everyone, all these
football writers and media people coming in and with only

(01:29:01):
a couple of small exceptions, I won't throw any names
out there, everyone was riveted to it as they're doing
the work in here watching the game. I mean it's
I think if you can't get into it at least
a little bits, that's your own prerogative.

Speaker 3 (01:29:13):
We all all people are getting into it.

Speaker 1 (01:29:15):
Yes, yeah, yeah, And you know, I don't know, every
sport isn't for everybody. I understand that, but yeah, I
mean we're also going to mention what's going on with things,
and you mentioned it's a crazy stat before we go
to the rest of the text in terms of three
red cards to day in a two goal game and
three red cards, think about that for a second. And
that's significant because.

Speaker 3 (01:29:36):
Because there were only four in the entirety of the
twenty twenty two World Cup and twenty eighteen World Cups.
So we're off to an entertaining start, shall I say
here at the I would.

Speaker 1 (01:29:49):
Tend to agree with you, all right? Four nine, four
to five one what do you.

Speaker 3 (01:29:51):
Got lots of good stuff today? Two of five three?
What would you rather not have happened? US men's team
doesn't get out of will play or MS don't make
the playoffs? That is off, that is that is one
of the most brutal you can man two five three

(01:30:11):
what are you doing to me?

Speaker 1 (01:30:12):
Mane? So Mariners don't make the playoffs? Yeah, or the
US doesn't get out of group. So let me let
me things are gonna happen. To stop it.

Speaker 3 (01:30:21):
Let me take you behind the curtain in my thought
process here, Okay, I I think I lean towards what
would I rather not have happened? Be the Mariners not
make the playoffs? Because the World Cups every four years, right,
But I don't believe the US has a real shot
to win the entire thing. I think they can go
on a run, but I don't think they're they're gonna
win it. I do believe the Mariners do have a

(01:30:43):
shot to win the World Series this year, so them
not making the playoffs obviously would be awful. So I
don't know. I kind of going back and forth as
I talked through this it's a that's a tough one.

Speaker 1 (01:30:54):
Well there's Yeah, there's the thing with the World Cup
in the US is year play on your own soil. Yeah,
first time since ninety four. The ramifications of them having
a successful run and helping grow the game huge are huge.
Same thing if they get God, if they went like

(01:31:15):
one in two or something or on draw losses two
and one or something in the group stage, I think
that would be a killer for the.

Speaker 3 (01:31:23):
Sport, would absolutely kill it. I don't think it's gonna happen.
But no, no, they're set up for success in the
group's team they are, and not for scroop stage. I
think that they have the right kind of you know,
mentality going into this. I think they're they're more together
then I've felt that this team has been in a
long time. It felt like they had the talent before
in the last couple of tournaments. But they have the

(01:31:44):
right kind of chemistry, they have the right coach. I
think things are aligning. And then honestly, I don't think
there's a true bet on like favorite in this tournament
as well, so it's kind of wide open.

Speaker 1 (01:31:54):
Okay, what else you got?

Speaker 3 (01:31:56):
It's pretty cool that you Anderson and furious Felts are
broadcast now national and iHeart for the coverage from the
World Cup making this region proud Stoke for you guys.
And also I hope you get more Dallas for the coverage. Haha.
You guys are killing it already. That's from Quinn in
two five three. Appreciate you, Quinn.

Speaker 1 (01:32:12):
I saw Jackson posted someone on Instagram. Who's he with today?

Speaker 3 (01:32:14):
Is it Danny Jackson?

Speaker 9 (01:32:15):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (01:32:16):
Okay, okay, okay, you heard him earlier with the round table,
so let's see crack and Twitter isn't happy about the
new assistant gm hire and.

Speaker 1 (01:32:28):
What day is today?

Speaker 3 (01:32:29):
It's a day that ends in why.

Speaker 1 (01:32:32):
Thank you. That's all you need to know. That's all
you need to know. Oh I love that crack listen cracking.
I'memberfane used to just blast Mariner's Twitter like that was
like a thing like Marinor's Twitter. Right, Yeah, I think
crack and Twitter rivals marinors Twitter.

Speaker 3 (01:32:49):
Really Yeah, yeah, I think it's not as big, doesn't have.

Speaker 1 (01:32:53):
L doesn't have the wide reach yet, but it's it's
see the thing about Mariner, it's just negative though, it's
his negative Mariners Twitter.

Speaker 3 (01:33:00):
Yeah, but the thing about Mariner's Twitter. That's kind of undefeated,
is it's cannibalistic nature, Like fans get mad at other
fans for how they fan, and that doesn't really happen
with crack and Twitter just yet.

Speaker 1 (01:33:12):
No, they just get mad at the organizing exactly, exactly.

Speaker 3 (01:33:14):
They're just pissed the organization. Fine two five three. Why
did Hillary Night leave? Being from Idaho? I thought she
would stay in the PNW.

Speaker 1 (01:33:21):
I don't know. I don't listen if anybody I saw
a great tweet someone put out just a little while ago,
it's just a fan that said, uh, just found out
the draft order for the PWHL next the draft next week.
They're just gonna have people throw darts and see what happens.
And that's where you end up going. It's it's such
a random, weird thing they're doing right now. I don't
know it. It's a bomber. They've really taken a beating

(01:33:44):
in this offseason. Bilka, Hillary Caleb Barnes, their number one
goaltender's gone. Yeah, it's it's they've taken and that was
a team that wasn't good anyway. Like now, it doesn't
mean they can't flip it on. I don't know sure.
Like I said, we think some point next week we'll
try to get Alison on somebody that knows what's going on.

Speaker 3 (01:34:05):
Yeah, we needs some kind of explanation.

Speaker 1 (01:34:07):
Because on the surface, for those of us that are
neo fights with it doesn't look good, right, it doesn't
look good.

Speaker 6 (01:34:12):
Damn it.

Speaker 3 (01:34:13):
Ian. Your show should always be catered to specifically me.
Just kidding, it's the World Cup. If you're not excited
about the World Cup even a little bit, that's a
personal issue.

Speaker 1 (01:34:23):
Two of six Now, US Soccer's garbage. Even if fall
Soccer knows the team plays like a high school team,
is that true?

Speaker 3 (01:34:28):
I mean, I wouldn't say high school team. I understand
they're not as much of a powerhouse as maybe either
women's team is or other teams in the world. But
I do believe that this year is the most talented
group we've ever had, and I believe the coach we
have is the right one. And this kind of follows
it up with that. Two five three is a coach
even American, No, he's not. That's one of the reasons
why I like it. He's from Argentina and you know,

(01:34:51):
you know he's but he's also a well respected club
coach that has had success at multiple levels, and he
was a he's very highly sought after from a lot
of other teams as well, and he chose the US,
So it was it was cool to see that kind
of happen.

Speaker 1 (01:35:04):
Noted Seattle area media icon mas V.

Speaker 5 (01:35:09):
No.

Speaker 1 (01:35:10):
Yeah, just told me. I didn't know this. Of the
eight teams that have all won the World Cup, only
eight countries have ever won it. No country has ever
won the World Cup with a foreign coach.

Speaker 3 (01:35:20):
Yep, that is true.

Speaker 1 (01:35:22):
Oh get by you? Yeah, yeah, Okay, I thought I
could carver Harty and slip one through the No.

Speaker 3 (01:35:26):
No, no, I'm played like Brandon Bussey over here. Yes
you are, I'll save that one. But no, it's true
because my wife has told me, like, even having a
Nargentinian as the US coach, he's always like, I don't
understand why countries employee coaches that aren't from their country,
and like it is kind of weird. But also at
the same time, that kind of narrows your sights to

(01:35:47):
like just one place, and there aren't good US coaches.
Let's be completely honest here. So having someone who like
is very well regarded in the European game kind of
get the most out of these American players. I think
it's a really good, really good thing. The English coaches German, uh,
the Brazilian coach is Italian. Like, it's not abnormal, it's
not just the US that is doing.

Speaker 1 (01:36:08):
This year two six. Naylor is like a hockey instigator
like Yanni Gordon was for the Crow. Yeah, that's a
dishould surprise no one, because Canadian. I asked, I asked
to you know earlier, is there a is there a
cop for Josh Naylor and baseball? It just pisses people off?
And he couldn't think.

Speaker 3 (01:36:24):
Maybe off the top of it, there is one that
I kind of thought of, but less so like kind
of just a pushing buttons guy. This guy's kind of
a dirty player. And close your ears, Mike Benton, but
Dalton rushing for the Dodgers.

Speaker 1 (01:36:39):
You just drew the ir of Bente.

Speaker 6 (01:36:41):
I did.

Speaker 3 (01:36:41):
I did. He's gonna come back and me. He was like,
that's old school baseball, that's how it should be played.
And uh, well, I mean that's your opinion, that's for you,
but go look at the slide that he did. I
forget who they were playing against. It might have been
like Milwaukee or something, but in the last few days
it was one of those double play balls where he
slides like three feet to the right of second base
just to take out the guy. Right, So like Josh

(01:37:03):
Naylor's not doing that crap, No, but.

Speaker 1 (01:37:05):
He's pushing the envelope, which I love. Yeah, Like I
absolutely love that. Uh two five three? Ian, What do
you think? I have this vibe with Mike McDonald being
a Don Shula type of coach for the c X.
I can see him being here for a long time
and it was very rare in this day and age,
as long as the new owner is waying to hold
on to him. Well, I mean, the last coach was
here for a while, Like they're they're successful coaches that

(01:37:26):
if like the guys have had success here and I
think really there's I'd include Chuck Chuck Knocks turned this
franchise around and got to the playoffs for the first time,
like Chuck Knox, Mike Holmgren, Pete Carroll all here for
a decent amount of time by NFL coaching standards. But yeah,
Mike McDonald, he ain't going anywhere, right, Yeah, he's Yeah,
I mean, like we're so early in his tenure, three

(01:37:49):
years in now. But this guy, this guy knows what
he's doing. And I mean this, the only downside with
what's going on here is what goes on the rest
of the division. Yeah, Kyle Shanahan elite coach, that team
is aging but still good in the Bay Area. McVeigh
elite coach. And what they've got going on in LA
needs normal further explanation. And then here like three of

(01:38:11):
the best coaches in the league, two offense to one defensive,
got mine, two of the best three, the best organizations
in the league, best GM's in the league, all here
in the same damn division. But yeah, I don't think
he's going anywhere.

Speaker 3 (01:38:23):
I think he has a perfect situation where he is
building the team that he likes. He's with the GM
that kind of likes it the same way, right, and
John Schneider has a lot of success that way as well.
And I don't know, it's just he seems like a
kind of loyal guy, you know what I mean?

Speaker 1 (01:38:37):
I do? I agree? I agree any gave a chance
his first coaching job. Yeah, as a head coach, I
would agree. Final one from Keith Miller at Keith says, okay, okay,
you can.

Speaker 3 (01:38:48):
Only have one another.

Speaker 1 (01:38:49):
You can only have one Mike Benton's hockey passion, Anders
and Jackson's combined soccer passion, or Dick Fane's love for
the gun Zaga Bulldogs. Yeah. I think that's not so much.
You can you can only have one. I think we
just have to rank them this sure feine one just

(01:39:10):
because it pisses off the guy next, and the other
two are basically a push. Yeah. I think that's I
think I nailed it. I nail it.

Speaker 3 (01:39:17):
I think I think you're right.

Speaker 1 (01:39:18):
I think you're okay, perfect, perfect, Okay, we're good.

Speaker 3 (01:39:21):
We are good.

Speaker 1 (01:39:22):
