get chills, I get birline tear in my eye when
I hear that call about Seattle coming back from John Strong.
He is a star. You couldn't have nailed the calls
on the two goals any better, couldn't have nailed the
end of the game any better. And yes, the USA
back here on Monday. Hello Anderson Hurst, How are you today, buddy?

Speaker 3 (02:37):
I'm pretty excited Ian. It was a big day yesterday.

Speaker 6 (02:41):
I feel very blessed that I was able to broadcast
one of the biggest moments in US men's national team history.
It's the first time in my life the US have
won a knockout stage game. Not in my life, but
in my soccer watching life, that they won a knockout
stage game. And it just felt like a giant hurdle
was cleared yesterday for the US.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
And it was a hurdle, There's no doubt. It wasn't
just the game, but then having to play the final.
I laugh when people say the final half hour with
only ten men, that's wrong because the way this idiot
who was the official last night gave time, it was
thirty plus an extra ten plus an extra two is
almost forty five minutes, almost an extra half hour, stop
and stop. It felt like when it was all said done.

(03:20):
I should say ten ten in another five. It is
about fifteen minutes when it was all said and done
with ten men. But of course the final what six
seven minutes of that they had a two goal lead,
still still to win in Santa Clara to come back here.
The hurdle, the obstacles, the challenge is if that team
had to get through everyone that was concerned, because God forbid,

(03:46):
they lost a nothing burger means nothing game against Turkey. A.
Hopefully all of you are okay now, because this team
is something we've talked about. You've talked about it a lot.
Jackson's talked about it, Danny Jackson has talked about it,
Peter Fee. They are resilient, They are different than past
US teams and Andrews. They have captivated the nation. Yeah,

(04:06):
this is what this is like. It's a dream scenario.
Not just for US men's soccer, It's a dream scenario
for Fox. It's a dream scenario for the sports fan
across the country. You're hosting the World Cup, your team
is in the round of sixteen. They provided plenty of
drama last night before that, plenty of excitement in their

(04:30):
group stage games. I just can't think of a better
situation setting up for Monday than than what we have
had to get us to this point.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
Yeah, I mean the only pie, well, I'm sure we'll
get to it.

Speaker 6 (04:40):
The only negative for that is that you won't have
your one of your best players.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
But it's just fantastic.

Speaker 6 (04:45):
I mean, it felt like, and I mentioned this before
that I'm happy that the US law. I'm gonna say
happy they lost against Turkey, but I'm happy they were
able to go through some adversity versus Turkey because the
first couple of games, it just felt like everything was
going to US way and you're gonna go through these moments.
Pete Feeling mentioned that last night he's won three national
championships as a head coach. He knows what it's like

(05:08):
to go through these runs where you need to get
some luck, you need to you're gonna have moments that
you feel like you're gonna wanna fold, and you're gonna
go up against things where it won't go your way.
And having that happened last night in the US not
only not get not fold under the pressure, I feel

(05:28):
like they got better. It's it's weird because they went
down to ten men. I won't say they played better
than they were with eleven, but they were still the
better team than Bosnia even with one less player on
the field, and they had showed it with a goal
scoring late in the game as well. It's just it's
so impressive, Ian.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
I think what we'll do is it at one o'clock.
You know, Sarah's is gonna join us at one point
twenty and Danny O'Neil at two at one o'clock will
kind of jump more into the into the This is
a great thing about sports, and a sport that a
lot of people are either just learning, don't really have
understand casual fan what have you. Is that you know,
the red card gives us something tangible to talk about,

(06:06):
and we'll get to that and I'll get your thoughts
on that coming up at one o'clock today. But I
think what you said there's important for this team as
they head into that game on Monday here in Seattle
around to sixteen against Belgium. There is they had to
battle some adversity and it was easy. The first two
group stage games frankly were easy, and I mean and
then soccer terms like, it was they they were the

(06:27):
better side, they had, everything was better quality. Everything was
better in those first two games. Again, I don't care
about the third game. You don't care about the third game.
Anybody with any half a brain doesn't care about the
third group stage game. But those first two were easy,
and I was listening, you'll love this. So we play
a weekly league, golf league game goals after work. So
yesterday was that day. It's Wednesdays, you guys know, because

(06:48):
you see me bolt out the hall, ass out of there.
And I got lucky yesterday because the game went into
stoppage time with Belgium. I was able to I was
able to avoid the traffic. But so you know, we
teed off at five o'clock and you know, our group
we had the game. The group in front of us
had the game on a radio. I had the game
through the speaker and the cart on a on my phone,

(07:10):
watching it and listening to it and for the whole
basically the whole two hours. Yeah, and we're watching it
and the ebbs and the flows, the epps and the
downs that you know, two goals waved off for off
sides and they were the right calls, uh for the US.
But the frustration that comes with that, first of all,
we'll get they got to do something like it's like

(07:31):
there's been far too many goals waved off with off
sides that weren't called initially in the in the World Cup.
It's just you've got to be better that your offishating's
got something's got to change because you can't have the
celebration that you have and all because soccer celebrations are different,
they take like five minutes. They got to do better.
But anyway that aside, they were the right calls, the
ups and downs, the goal when the red card happened.

(07:54):
And again we'll spend i'll get your thoughts. I'll go
a little deeper on this. At one when that was called,
my buddy Steve Shrek, who plays was a high level
player and still plays is old age of fifty every
Friday night and knows the game really well. He was
in the group in front of us and we're backed
up into par three and I was were I'm watching

(08:15):
it on the previous one, I'm like, this is I
can't I cannot believe this, Like I literally couldn't believe it.
I was there's no doubt because when you watch it
in real time, I thought maybe a yellow, maybe in
real time. I'm showing it to him. He's losing his mind.
We get, you know, a couple holes later, we're all
we ended up playing with like six of us because
the two groups we were clear clear and so we're playing.

(08:37):
I'm on the T box on seventeen. It's one nil
times running up in the US as a free kick,
and like there's five of the guys huddling around my
phone watching in the car, and I said, you know what,
I really hope I hope you guys are screaming in
my backswing. And I played like absolute dog you know
what anyway at that point, so it didn't matter. It
was like you couldn't play worse golf in the history
of man, So it didn't matter. I'm I'm literally lining

(09:02):
the ball up and they screw because I didn't want
to watch the freaking right and I just can't. I
can't do it. I'm done. My mind's too stressed. And
they start losing it. I go, you guys are just
messing with me, and they go, no, he's scored it.
I'm like, no, you're a kidding awesome. So then I
watched the rep I like just shank one left, like
I don't even care. Let me see what you and
I'm watching the replay. What an incredible strike? Yes, like

(09:26):
the beauty of the game is lost sometimes because too
many of these guys think that they're you know, punters
in the NFL or field goal kickers kicking off and
they want to launch balls in the upper deck. I've
never been able to fathom how people at that skill
level can't finish it. Like you and I talked about
the volley we saw the other day. It was incredible
for him to put that up over and dip down

(09:47):
that Daniel Lorie couldn't do a rise and a drop
like that in her prime, like she couldn't.

Speaker 5 (09:52):
She just couldn't.

Speaker 2 (09:52):
She's maybe the best picture not named Jenny Finch ever
and she couldn't do that. That was an incredible strike.
And that game had everything. Unfortunately it was in Santa Clair.
Those people don't deserve it. But what that game had everything?

Speaker 7 (10:06):
Did it not?

Speaker 5 (10:06):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (10:07):
I mean it's everything you want. And you mentioned that
you don't really care about the Turkey game. I do
in a sense that not in the result. I do
because I think without them going through that game where
they did have to face a team that was battling
through some stuff, and they had to come back a
couple of times as well, even though they end up
losing the game, having the feeling like, okay, we need

(10:29):
to fight back. There's there's a little bit of you know,
something going against us here. I feel like that really
helped them in the game yesterday because.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
And I agree with that when I say I don't care, yeah, results,
the result didn't matter.

Speaker 6 (10:40):
Totally totally, I know what you mean. But the other
thing is the way Bosnia played. They were scuffing it
up from the beginning. They were man handling Florian Florian
Baligan the entire game. And then the ref doesn't use
a single card, and then the first card that comes
out as a red on a VR review and.

Speaker 3 (10:58):
Just well again we'll get to that late, but.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
Wasn't wasn't there a And after that I forget who
was in the box for the US. Someone got there?
And again I'm watching a cell phone in a golf cart.
The tugging of the jersey. Shouldn't that have been a PK?

Speaker 3 (11:12):
Yeah, looked at Yes, it should have been.

Speaker 2 (11:15):
FIFA has got issues, MANIF has got issues. So all right,
let's do this. I gotta take a quick break. Yep,
tay a quick break. We'll come back. We're going to
talk to the last two first round draft picks of
your Seattle Cracking. Next.

Speaker 1 (11:29):
Now back Dean Furness on your Home for the Huskies
Cracking and the Twelfth Man, brought to you by Seattle's
closest Snow call Me Casino and Hotel on Sports Radio
ninety three point three kJ R FM.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
Nice Andrews. Good choice of music.

Speaker 3 (11:47):
Huh yeah, you're anny. Guys are gonna use this one.

Speaker 2 (11:50):
Yeah, there you go a little Cracking Hockey Network music
thanks to Jerry Bruckheimer, the Hollywood producer. We're back in
the thirty two barn. Girl you pronounced. We do this
Afternoon Hockey is over officially until training camp starts late
August early September, because the development camp for the Crack
and just finished up and I'm joined now. We're kind
of making this right a passage. We did this last
year with Berkeley Catton and Jake O'Brien the first to

(12:12):
the last two first round picks for the Cracking, and
we're doing it again this year with the wiley veteran Jacobrian,
who joins us a line with this year's first round
pick Chase Reid. Development camp wraps up after three days.
The Stucky Cup is over and we got a chance
to watch these guys on the ice and before we
send them off for the summer. And actually a meal
that's I heard Ribi steak, chicken and ribs are waiting

(12:34):
for you guys downstairs. Jake, how's that sound?

Speaker 7 (12:36):
I thought that sounds really good.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
It sounds good. He like, get me the hell out
of here. Talk to Ian Chase ree first time we
got a chance. We talked to you on draft day
as well. You've been here now for a few days.
You've seen the facilities and everything. What's going through your
mind after the whirlwind that's been the last six days.

Speaker 8 (12:53):
Yeah, I mean it's unreal having the opportunity to come
play here and have all the facilities and resources possible,
being able to talk to anyone in any situation, doesn't
matter what it is. It's everybody's been super welcoming. The
city's great.

Speaker 2 (13:05):
I can't wait to.

Speaker 3 (13:05):
Get started, Jake.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
For you year two, so you come back and I say,
wily veteran, but this is a year ago year in
his position. How different is it for you? This year.
Is it more of a comfort level? You went through
training camp, all those How is it for you this
second go round? Yeah, it's definitely less stressful for sure.

Speaker 9 (13:22):
Last year obviously the combine then going to the draft
or really doing a whole bunch of stuff there and
then not knowing where you're gonna end up.

Speaker 7 (13:30):
So it was a roll win last year.

Speaker 9 (13:33):
But this year I was a lot more relaxed and
definitely less stressful coming in.

Speaker 2 (13:37):
Have you talked to Chase much? Have you given any advice?
You don't have to talk to the rookies, I know
because I say that for those who't know we sat here,
we meant Berkeley. Berkeley was kind of here last year
and he kind of helped you out a little bit.
Are you kind of taking that same role this year?

Speaker 7 (13:50):
I don't know, maybe a little bit.

Speaker 9 (13:51):
It's kind of tough when we're both O seven, so
it's kind of it's almost a little bit weird.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
Were roommates though, Yeah?

Speaker 1 (13:56):
We are?

Speaker 2 (13:56):
Are your roommates?

Speaker 5 (13:57):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (13:57):
All right?

Speaker 9 (13:58):
But yeah, just talking to him and then just just
asked him questions about the draft and stuff.

Speaker 2 (14:03):
So so seven is just for those of you got
enough junior fans here the everage Silver Tips fans or
Thunderbird fans. They know what seven means your birthday year,
and that means how old you are, So you're both
basically you're both eighteen years old. Yeah exactly, Yeah, yeah,
and Chase has a late birthday, as they say in
the old hockey world. So that's why you By the way,
our math that night we were doing the show and
Everett who's the radio play by play guy, al me

(14:25):
and a TV idiot and Mike Bent I played Benton.
We're like, oh, god, he's really young. No, no, you're
actually a little bit older in that sense as well.
So you've been around all right, I'm gonna go back
for people to hear it. You played against Chase Jake,
give us a scouting report.

Speaker 9 (14:38):
Uh yeah, well we obviously didn't play each other much
because he's in the sue, but when we did, he's
a he's actually an excellent skater high hockey IQ. So
he impressed me and my teammates when we played him.

Speaker 2 (14:53):
And yeah, what'd you think when Chase was drafted, Like, hey,
that's a nice little I. Of course I slipped to seven.
Nobody thought that would happen. We're like Hey, that's a pretty.

Speaker 9 (14:59):
Nice pick up for Yeah, obviously I didn't think that's
what who we're gonna get at seven, But when I
got seven, I was like, I was really hoping we
would pick him, and we ended up doing that.

Speaker 2 (15:09):
So all right, Chase, give me the skin of report
on this guy.

Speaker 8 (15:12):
Yeah, I mean, not very high hockey IQ, very poised
with the puck, very when the puck's on his stick,
it's his puck, you it's it's pretty hard to get
it away from him. But yeah, super super dynamic player,
just sets up his teammates all over the ice, scores goals,
always finds a way to score.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
So super hard to play against. Jake Jacobriant Chase rejoining us,
Jake for you, you left her last at the end
of training camp last year and you go back to juniors,
What what did they tell you and what did you
mostly have to work on last year, not just on
the ice but off the ice.

Speaker 9 (15:43):
Yeah, just being more mature in my game, being more
two way, lying more and and my d's on coverage
and being better than that way, and then also going
into a leadership role this year I learned I learned
a lot with that, especially in a room with older guys,
so yeah, yeah, I learned a lot to share. I

(16:04):
finally got to go on a little bit of a
playoff ROUNT two, so you want more than a little
playoff un I was pretty good. Yeah, well not not
not for us. We thought we were gonna go all
the way. But that's what kind of sucks about it.
But this this year has really helped me in it.
It'll help me for this year coming up.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
I was gonna say, like a leadership role for a
team with high expectations, it's it's it's like that's a
that's a big deal, especially for a guy. It's only
like for those who know not a lot of guys
are captains at least haven't been in the past in
juniors at eighteen, like that doesn't happen. So what did
that mean to you when you were giving that opportunity.

Speaker 9 (16:35):
Yeah, it's obviously a huge honor, and especially in the
room that we had. We had I think we had
five former captains, so just trying to take stuff from
them also because they were obviously captains before me on
other teams.

Speaker 7 (16:50):
So I learned a lot from everyone this year.

Speaker 2 (16:52):
It is Jcobrien and Chase Reed, joining us. All right
for you, Chase, like your situation is interesting, you go
have tell the story because I think we were just
talking about this, was watching all the scouts and other
guys up Peop were watching, and two years ago you
were cut from a junior team in the American in
the USHL. Yeah how Yeah, I don't know, Jamie, you
believe that? Like there's guys that are sixteen playing in

(17:15):
the DUB and the O and the Q and all
this and that's the USHL and all due respect, he
as good as a as a HL, Like, how the
hell did that happen? Yeah?

Speaker 8 (17:22):
I mean I went into training camp for Waterloo. I
didn't have my best camp, but I still thought they'd
give me an opportunity to go out there and just
maybe maybe show show my skills and go out there
and prove myself. But you know, they never gave me
the chance. I got scratched the first aid of the season,
got sent down to the North American League, played in
Bismarck for about a month and a half, and then
once the rule got changed, we could go from the
CCHL at College and made the jump to the Sioux.

Speaker 2 (17:43):
So well did it work out for the best for you.
Like sometimes like I'm sure at the time you're getting
your healthy scratch as a young guy, you're like, what
the hell's going on here? I you know, you get
sent down to like a tier two level whatever it is,
and it's like, did it work out best? And when
it's all said and done, do.

Speaker 8 (17:59):
You think, Yeah, I think everything's falling into plays very well.
Being having the opportunity to go playing the zo and
that kind of environment, very big hockey town. It's about
the only thing to do up there if you're a
hockey fan. So yeah, the industry there, Yeah, Yeah, it's
a lot of fun. We had Jeff Carter come to
the rank as well, so yeah, it's super fun up there.
But yeah, everything planned out the perfect way could.

Speaker 2 (18:20):
Jake for you in term. I know one of the
things that Berkeley went through this too. We talked about
this a year ago, sitting here, getting bigger, getting stronger,
doing all those things. How does that work? Like is
it eating more calories? How does that like? Did they
give you a plan? And how did it cause you?
You do look a little bit different, Like you put
on a little bit of weight and stuff like that
good weight someone's put on bad weight, you put on
good weight. How did that work? Like what do you

(18:41):
do per day in terms of like just nutrition and
things like that.

Speaker 9 (18:44):
Yeah, well, the past three a few years, I've been
working out with a trainer in Toronto.

Speaker 7 (18:49):
That's helped me a lot.

Speaker 9 (18:50):
So just going into the gym every day Monday to
Friday and then so I'll be doing that for sure.
But I think the nutrition is the biggest part because
I know I'm gonna put an effort in the gym,
but if I don't have a good nutrition, then I
won't I won't put on good way and muscle. So
just trying to get to four four thousand calories a day,
but but with good calories too.

Speaker 7 (19:12):
So I feel like that's the biggest thing. Four a day. Yeah,
that's the goal. Yeah, I think.

Speaker 2 (19:17):
I'd be three hundred and three. And I could do
that with beer. I don't know if I could do
what's what's what? How do you do that?

Speaker 8 (19:23):
Like?

Speaker 2 (19:23):
What do you like just for be that's curre.

Speaker 9 (19:25):
Like well, yeah, protein protein shakes and then just having
yeah race race and beef, race and chicken and just
trying to have instead of breakfast, launch and dinner. Maybe
you mixing another big meal in there and then have
another late one later in the night before you go
to better or something.

Speaker 2 (19:45):
Chase the same thing for you as I'm sure that's
one of the things they want you to do when
you go to Michigan State.

Speaker 8 (19:48):
Right yeah, definitely put on weight, like Jake said, chicken
and rice, beef and rice. You got to change up
the sauce that's on top though, or it gets old
really fast.

Speaker 2 (19:56):
But what do you go with sauce?

Speaker 8 (19:58):
Wise, throw some tarry off on there more often than
not that once they go to but uh, yeah, there's
not much and you can put on there that's gonna
make it taste good.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
Fellas. You guys know where you're at Seattle, Like you
can't walk three feet without finding a coffee shop or
a Terioki store like they probably you probably haven't mentioned
at the hotel, right, not much. Trust me. When you
come back for camp, well, you can't come up with
camp like you can't come to camp right yeah, yeah,
I'll be at school. You'll be a school when you're
back here in the future. If you like Terryaki, there

(20:26):
is there. This is like the like where you well,
where you're from. You can't go anywhere with else seen
to Tim works. You probably what dunkin Donuts, that's us. Yeah,
that's that's I'll just say that that's us for Terryoki,
So you guys will be set in that regard. Let's
talk about your game. Who do you model your game after? Yeah?

Speaker 8 (20:45):
Yeah, I think we have a lot in common. Both
able to run a power play. Both both very dynamic skaters, uh,
very high hockey IQ love having the pock on our
stick and carry play very well.

Speaker 3 (20:55):
Uh yeah, just all around very dynamics players.

Speaker 2 (20:57):
Right, you've watched them play with you agree, Jake?

Speaker 7 (20:59):
Yeah, I agree with that.

Speaker 2 (21:00):
Lorensky light Yeah yeah, heavy shot, Yeah, pretty heavy shot.
It excited yea.

Speaker 7 (21:04):
All right?

Speaker 2 (21:04):
Who do you model your game after?

Speaker 7 (21:06):
I like to say why Johnson?

Speaker 9 (21:08):
Just the way he's poised with the puck, the way
he can put it back in the back to that,
he's obviously a very good young guy in the NHL,
and he's made big steps over the years and especially
these last two years.

Speaker 2 (21:20):
That's JC O'Brien. Chase ree with me for a few
more moments. The Krakens first round draft picks each of
the last two seasons, as far as the organization is concerned, Jake,
For you, the plan this year sounds like Coachella Valley.
And for those wh don't know, the rules changed thankfully
probably probably thankfully right like the rules change a nineteen
year old again year O seven, but the draft year matters.
You can actually play in the in the American Hockey

(21:42):
League this season. What have they told you? I'm sure
that's the expectation. That's probably your expectation as well as
to play in Coachella. What have they told you about
that in terms of getting ready for it? And what
do they expect from you down there? Yeah?

Speaker 9 (21:54):
Well, obviously I'm gonna try to come come in to
camp and try to make the team like.

Speaker 2 (21:57):
That, you know what, that's you know what that's on me.
That's that's a minus on E one hundred percent. Your
job is to come in here and hopefully make this roster, right,
So let's start there. What have they told you in
terms that they're gonna get you a shot? Right?

Speaker 4 (22:08):
Uh?

Speaker 9 (22:09):
Yeah, Well obviously it's it's up to me how how
I come to camp?

Speaker 7 (22:13):
What would I do this summer?

Speaker 9 (22:15):
So yeah, I hope to try to make the team
out of camp and then if if that doesn't go
to plan, then I think Coachelli will be a good
option for me. Again my first you're pro hockey, and
I feel like it will be a big thing for me,
a big step for me.

Speaker 2 (22:28):
So and you got a little taste of it in
the playoffs down there last year. What did you notice
about that level of play in the American Hockey League
And again you're in the playoffs, so it's a whole
different level compared to the Ontario Hockey League.

Speaker 9 (22:38):
Yeah, it's obviously a huge step, just the way how
every team is so structured, the way guys back check
and and and press you at the blue lines and stuff.
So it's definitely a big step, especially going into the
playoffs and stepping into the playoffs rather than regular season
where the speed isn't up up to uh up to
par as in the playoffs. So it was definitely a

(22:59):
big step, but it'll help me a lot winner this year.

Speaker 2 (23:02):
Did you give you that comments like do you do
you step on the ice? I think the first couple
of games you were scratched and then you got in
there and got some got some game action in. Did
you kind of say, hey, like I can play at
this level? And if I can play at this level
right now at my age, I can play at that
next level as well. To kind of give you that
confidence heading into camp this fall.

Speaker 9 (23:20):
I always I'm a I'm a confident player. I'm always
high in confidence. Obviously, it's very tough stepping in there.
I didn't have my best at games that I would
have liked, but having that experienced it definitely gives me
more confidence because I know I could play there.

Speaker 2 (23:36):
Chase for you, uh, for those who know you're going
to Michigan State, there's a family connection, right. You guys
are all green and white Spartans. Is that the Case's amazing?
Where's that come from?

Speaker 8 (23:45):
I am played volleyball for Michigan State, so we've we've
always been green and white, and I didn't want to
mess it up and go to go to Michigan, so
it's always been Michigan State.

Speaker 5 (23:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (23:54):
I was just gonna ask you, like, was there other
schools recruiting you? Yeah?

Speaker 8 (23:58):
Yeah, I had Penn State, Zona State, a couple of
Ivy League schools, a couple more Big ten schools, but
it was pretty much dead to at Michigan State.

Speaker 2 (24:07):
Once I took my visits. There was no there, like
you there's no chance you're going somewhace else in the
Big ten. No, No, not like that. You couldn't go home. No,
like there's like there's no chance. No, Yeah, I was.

Speaker 8 (24:17):
I was definitely playing and it's close to home. My
family can come watch me. Moving away for junior. Having
the ability for my family to come up there and
be able to watch me all every game is super cool.

Speaker 2 (24:25):
Which is awesome. So when you go there, what's the
goal for you? Like, obviously big ten weight room, big
ten training table, you got all that at your disposal
and all those things. We talked about that just from
a hockey standpoint. What do you hope to get done
this coming fall?

Speaker 8 (24:37):
Yeah, like Jake said, just maturing my game all around,
eventually hopefully being able to come play here at the
end of the season and make an impact on the
team and just do everything I can do to be
the best player I can be.

Speaker 2 (24:47):
Have you guys had a chance? I'll talk start with you.
Did you have a chance? I know Lane's kind of
up here watching you have other guys, other people coaching,
the Torrent coach was coaching, and Caitlin and some other people.
But do you have a chance of talking Lane much.
I met him very briefly, but no, haven't talked to
him yet. I think we have X interviews downstairs sofa.
What about you with Lane? You know you were here
last year obviously, so you got to know him. What
do you think like le about it came in here

(25:07):
and like he's got a way of doing things and
he's got a system in place. What does Lane talk
to you about?

Speaker 9 (25:13):
To be honestly, we haven't really talked much, but I
played that preseason game last year, so I kind of
saw his coaching style and and we did some video
before the game and stuff. So I really like his
coaching style. I think he's a very good coach, very
structured and everything.

Speaker 2 (25:30):
So yeah, I'll wrap it up with the obligatory fan
question afterwards for folks. There was about a couple thousand
people here watching the three on three actually in up
being a four on four tournament today, the stucky cut
as they're watching that. Fans are great, They're coming out here.
It's season ticket holders, kind of an invite only thing,
and you guys signed autographs afterwards. I'll start with you, Jake.

(25:50):
You played here, you were at Climate Pledge last season
you kind of got a taste of it. What do
you think of this city as a hockey town.

Speaker 9 (25:56):
Yeah, it's obviously a big sports town the way they
come up to every game and sell out every game.
So it's a big hockey town or a hockey city
and in a big sports city.

Speaker 2 (26:07):
So did you throw in the first pitch last year?

Speaker 5 (26:09):
With no? I did not know? Wow?

Speaker 7 (26:11):
Yeah that kind of sucks.

Speaker 2 (26:12):
What the hell?

Speaker 5 (26:13):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (26:14):
How did this guy get that?

Speaker 7 (26:15):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (26:16):
I wish nice, nice drill. By the way, thank you
tell people. So you threw out the first pitch. I
think Naylor was the catcher right on Tuesday or Monday Monday.
I think it's Monday, right, Monday, Tuesday, whatever, Monday Monday Day.
So Chase got to throw out the first pitch in
the Martor's game, which is kind of fun. It was
the last time you threw a baseball in.

Speaker 8 (26:33):
The tunnel five minutes before, but since before that probably
not since.

Speaker 2 (26:36):
I was like sixteen.

Speaker 5 (26:38):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (26:38):
Yeah nervous.

Speaker 8 (26:40):
Yeah, I was more nervous to walk up to the mound,
like didn't want to step on the line or slip
and fall or something. I was to actually throw the pitch,
but no, Yeah, I was definitely shaken a little bit.

Speaker 2 (26:49):
So you got the jersey, which you don't have. No,
I'm gonna fix that, Kevin Martinez, if you're listening, Mariner president,
we're gonna fix we got Jake. Get a Jake out there.
That's that's that's unacceptable. This guy, I think got to
I don't know what's going on.

Speaker 7 (27:01):
Yeah, I don't know. I don't know why.

Speaker 2 (27:03):
That's not good. Well, all right, so for you, did
you grow up a Tigers fan?

Speaker 10 (27:08):
No?

Speaker 8 (27:08):
Yeah, well, I mean I never really watched much baseball,
but always cheer for the hometown.

Speaker 2 (27:12):
Okay, so now you've got a Mariner jersey. Yeah, so
you're gonna kind of chan Yeah. I think I got
a cheer for the Mariners now, okay. And theylor's a
hockey guy. Yeah, huge hockey guy, has a cracking jersey
all the time. He's an Ontario guy as well as Naylor.
So all right, were you blue Jay fan growing up?

Speaker 5 (27:28):
Yes?

Speaker 4 (27:28):
I was?

Speaker 2 (27:28):
Okay, are you still?

Speaker 5 (27:30):
I don't.

Speaker 9 (27:30):
I don't fallow baseball much, but perfect, that's good answer.
Definitely definitely still like him.

Speaker 2 (27:35):
That's well okay, Well, well you know what we're gonna
change that with the Mariners as well. All right, Jcobrien
and Chase reeed. Guys, congratulations on being first round picks
last year. The road ahead is gonna be exciting. I
think everybody here in this town is excited for both
you guys. Can't wait to watch you guys this season. Hopefully,
Jake you're here. If not, we'll be keeping track of it,
but hopefully you're here. And obviously now we gotta watch
a little big ten hockey with you case as well.

(27:56):
So guys, thanks a lot for coming. Rib eyes chicken
ribs downstairs waiting for you, so go enjoy. All right,
thankank you. All right, we'll take a quick break stick
around nine three point three KFM.

Speaker 1 (28:09):
Now back Dean Furness on your home for the Huskies,
Crack It and the Twelfth Man, brought to you by
Seattle's closest snow call me Casino and Hotel on Sports
Radio ninety three point three kJ R FM.

Speaker 2 (28:26):
All right, welcome back in thirty two, Bar and Grill,
we are here big thanks Jacobrien and Chase Reied for
joining us here. And yeah, we did a little hockey
in July. Whatever, it's a lot I thought two things.
One kind of fun these guys are here, talk to
the young guys, get a chance to get to them
a little bit, Andrews as well as we wrap things up, Yeah,

(28:48):
probably won't. I mean we got still free agency, trades
could happen all those things as as the summer progresses.
But kind of putting a bow on the on the
season off early offseason, getting ready for a couple off
before training camp starts later on. But I'm glad we
got a chance to talk to those two guys.

Speaker 3 (29:04):
Yeah, I know, it's good to hear.

Speaker 6 (29:05):
And I kind of like the little right of passage
thing that because he did it with Berkeley and Jake
last year, where you know, it's the first last two
first round picks, right, and Berkeley was kind of the
elder statesman of the group, and now he's graduated on
to be a part of the roster, and you know,
Jacobrien now kind of fills that role today.

Speaker 5 (29:23):
I want.

Speaker 2 (29:24):
Yeah, And when we were sitting here last year, I
didn't I think there was some hope that Berkeley would
make the team. Yes out of camp. I don't know
how realistic we really thought that hope was, but there
was some hope ye right, that he would make it. Well,
now maybe Jake's in that same situation.

Speaker 6 (29:43):
Yeah, and you kind of mentioned that when when you
kind of laid out the path for him, it's like, oh, yeah,
what do you think about Coachella Valley? And then he
was like, wait, well, my first objective is to make
the team here, right.

Speaker 3 (29:54):
And I love that from him.

Speaker 6 (29:55):
I love the pushback that he expects to kind of
push for a roster spot for the crack Yeah.

Speaker 2 (30:00):
I I And that was a bad one on me.
I don't even know what I was thinking. I'm like, yeah,
you gonna go down Coachella Valley. He's like, I Am,
like really, I am. I didn't know that. But you
know what that's it doesn't matter what sport you're in.
If you're an athlete, that should be your attitude is
like I'm not content with just staying here or you know,

(30:22):
going there, going the Miners. I you know, it's well,
we're gonna talk to you know, Sarahs about the Mariners
coming up on twenty today and I'm gonna I kind
of want to go down the road a little bit
again with him, with Kate Anderson and especially like, at
what point does it not do you any good to
be in the miners right, right. And I think you
could probably debate it a little bit with Berkeley Caton
last year, but honestly, he forced his way under this roster. Yeah,

(30:46):
they had older players down there that could have played
here and they didn't. Right, he was better, right, and
I think, you know, we'll see what it means for
him coming up this season. You know, all the talk
about what's going on here in Seattle and where they
are and all that. You know, part of what they
would hope to do is have guys like Berkeley Catton

(31:07):
take a big step forward exactly right, take a really
big step forward. And you know they need Shane Wright
to maybe do that as well, take that big step
forward along the way to get to that next level,
you know. And if they can do that, hey, who
knows what will happen along the way. But I'll just
I'll say this, I think both those kids are are
pretty mature. Chase Reid is, but sure, be honest, I

(31:28):
mean this kid talks like he's a pro right now.

Speaker 6 (31:30):
Yeah, I noticed kind of a different They're both confident, right,
and I love that, but in two different ways. Like
jac O'Brien's almost like it thinks, you know, everything is
a slight against him, which we've known has been successful.

Speaker 1 (31:43):
You know.

Speaker 6 (31:44):
When you know the last the last first round pick,
Chase Reid and the one before, Jacobrien Berkeley Catton both
got to throw out a first pitch of the marriage game.

Speaker 3 (31:53):
He didn't. He's like, what the hell?

Speaker 2 (31:56):
I got to talk to Kevin marts about that one,
but I got to talk to I don't know what
happened last year, but I gotta talk. I gotta talk
to Martinez about that one, because he was he was
not happy about that.

Speaker 3 (32:05):
He's gonna stay at Blue Jays fan until that switches.

Speaker 2 (32:08):
Right. Yeah, I'll go throw it to Naylor and be
done with it, like I do. One of the things
that's cool in this town and I'll just I'll get
off the hockey as a whole for a second. One
of the things is cool in this town, there is
there has always been a lot of camaraderie between the
pro teams.

Speaker 3 (32:25):
Yeah, I do love that.

Speaker 2 (32:26):
And you know, I know a few years ago that
you know, the comment was made big ugly house by
It was it Stanton, I guess it said it or something, right,
and now he was referring to a building that frankly
was probably never ever had announce of hope to get
built down in Sona, the Chris Hansen project. And part
of it was because a the financing didn't exist, and

(32:47):
be the financing didn't exist to actually get a team
right here in that regard, especially when see Bomber left.
But by and large, the teams do get along really well.
And I've mentioned this before that now it was different
this year because Ron frances this is really tight with
Jerry to Poto. Ron obviously not here anymore, but to
Poto came to a ton of drafts and vice versa.
Francis would sit in the Mariner's draft room as well.

(33:09):
I love that, And I know there's been some of
that same stuff with the Seahawks. I know the PR
staffs for the Kraken and the Seahawks work together quite
a bit, even sometimes as far as coordinating when you're
gonna have Hey, we're doing this press conference or this
event today, what are you guys doing so, which kind
of is nice, Like not a lot of markets would
do that if you're in a lot of and we're
a big market, Make no mistake this is a market
eating market twelve. There's no way that you're sitting in

(33:31):
Chicago when the Bears are coordinating stuff at the Blackhawks
like they're not doing that right, you know.

Speaker 5 (33:36):
Now.

Speaker 2 (33:36):
I think it's more the Seahawks are saying we're doing
it this day, and they're like, here's our heads up.
They're not moving for anybody exactly, but you get the point.
There is that camaraderie, which I think is I think
is really important in sports. But yeah, fun to talk
to those two guys, and we'll see what happens coming
up in the fall. All right, here's what's coming up
in the rest of the show today. Coming up at
one twenty, we'll talk to Eno sarrus Manor's back in
action tonight. For the life of me, I thought this

(33:59):
was a day game today. Just just just told me earlier.
I go, yeah, well, the manorer's playing on one. I
said they playing at twelve forty years at the one.
Ten games goes, what are you talking about? To game
Broll think about this though it's getaway day and they
had yesterday off, why do they play it. I love
the factor of playing a night game because that means
I go home watch the game today and we're not
and we're not talking. We're not talking baseball with the

(34:21):
you know, when the miners are playing.

Speaker 7 (34:22):
I love that.

Speaker 2 (34:22):
I'm good with that. But well, we'll talk manners with
EO Sarus coming up at one twenty today and then
Danie O'Neil is going to join us at two pm.
Normally have Friday guest, but he'll join us at two
pm today. We'll check in with Danny about all things sports.
I'm excited to talk to Danny about the World Cup.
I'm really excited to talk to you about it next
because I think we need to get some clarity Anders.

Speaker 7 (34:45):
On two things.

Speaker 2 (34:46):
One and I know it's it's it's not even water
to the bridge now with the red card yesterday, because
it affects you for another game. It does like it's
one thing. It's like, hey, bad call, you move on,
you won the game, who cares. That's not the case
in soccer. The red card means you're affected in the
next game. So we're gonna talk about should it have

(35:08):
been a red card? Why was a red card? I
thought the protocol that they went through really strange, right, Yes,
it's like really weird. In the sense that it's not
how you're supposed to use VAR, which would tell me
that it should have been null and void. But it wasn't.
That's why FIFA crooked. But we'll talk about that, and
then we'll talk about what the ramifications are for the
Belgium match coming up on Monday, which we'll be here

(35:29):
in Seattle. Can't wait. Should be fun and I do
believe just talking to people out here. Am I right
in this? You guys are doing pre and posts for
about I don't know, one hundred stations across the country
from Jimmy's on first on Monday.

Speaker 3 (35:41):
Yes, we are very exciting, dude.

Speaker 2 (35:43):
How exciting is that?

Speaker 3 (35:44):
I love it?

Speaker 6 (35:45):
Seriously, it's honestly, I try not to think about how
many places my voice will be heard. I think about
just talking soccer with my buddies, whether it's Pete Feeling,
Jackson Feld, Stanny Jackson, Steve, Zachkwani or Brad Evans. But yeah,
it's fun to be able to do this for a
lot of people because I feel like we provide really
good coverage.

Speaker 2 (36:04):
Would you really include Jackson and your buddies? No, coming,
We'll talk software.

Speaker 1 (36:10):
Next No from the Star Rentals Sports to Jordan ninety
three point three KJRFMS Sports Headlines.

Speaker 2 (36:20):
Headlines are brought to you by Frostbrew, cors, light, chews,
chill or at the thirty two Bar and grill Cracking
development camp, the young'ins, the rookies and others. Just wrapping
up a short time ago. All right, Our lead story
is pretty simple. US men's national team World Cup win,
win win. Let's go baby US to Bosnia nil nil,

(36:44):
first knockout stage win for the US the World Cup
since two thousand and two. Belgium up next Monday here
in Seattle, Washington.

Speaker 6 (36:52):
Rematch of the twenty fourteen round of sixteen when the
US lost to Belgium.

Speaker 2 (36:58):
Remind me to tell you this. I full the story.
I'll tell it again about that one. I got in
trouble on that one.

Speaker 3 (37:02):
Oh no, what did you do?

Speaker 5 (37:04):
Ian?

Speaker 7 (37:05):
Actually?

Speaker 2 (37:05):
I ballamee puckett. Let's see Spain Austria there at the half,
Spain leading one nil.

Speaker 3 (37:12):
That's correct, So that's correct, sir?

Speaker 2 (37:13):
There? Yes, Portugal, Croatia later Switzerland Algeria. Mariners look for
a sweep today against the Angels. They won the first
two games a series. They took yesterday off because there's
a little thing called a World Cup game Belgium and
Segal yesterday, so they took the day off yesterday. Angels
Mariners wrapping up tonight's six to forty first pitch. We'll
talk about that. You know, Sarahs from the Athletic coming
up at one twenty today. NHL Alex Ovechkin decided to
return for the twenty twenty six twenty twenty seven season

(37:36):
is twenty second with the Washington Capitals. Our number two.

Speaker 1 (37:39):
Now back to Ian Furness on your home for the
Huskies Cracking and The Twelfth Man, brought to you by
Seattle's closest snow called Me Casino and Hotel on Sports
Radio ninety three point three kjr FM.

Speaker 2 (37:57):
Our number two of the radio show Welcome Back in
were the thirty two bar and Grillly in fornosced with
you Anderson Hurst, our host, our anchor for all of
our World Cup coverage along the iHeartRadio network both as
they say in the world, terrestrial radio and the iHeart
app one hundred plus stations across the country. And Andrews,

(38:20):
You've been a busy, busy dude lately. Last night had
to be one of the highlights US knocking off.

Speaker 3 (38:28):
Bost not sheep dirty If they were playing dirty, weren't
they Ian?

Speaker 2 (38:32):
They were dirty? Yes, you know what it was. I
would put it this way. I don't know they're dirty.
I think that what they're they're playing a little greasy. Yeah,
because they knew they couldn't compete with the US.

Speaker 3 (38:44):
Correct.

Speaker 2 (38:44):
Yes, is that a better way to look at it? Yeah?

Speaker 6 (38:46):
I think, very similar to Australia when they were in
Seattle too, but it was even more so because I
think again, we can talk about the refereeing here. If
the ref makes a couple put brings out a couple
of yellow cards early on in the game, that changes
the entire like game and says, no, we're not allowing
that extra stuff to happen anymore.

Speaker 2 (39:03):
But he didn't watch grabbing all that stuff going on.

Speaker 3 (39:06):
In jerseys, like late tackles after you make the pass, like.

Speaker 2 (39:10):
Just let's let's tackle that the red card, shall we?
Yeah a second, let's do it. Let's do let's let's
tackle the red card and kind of go through that.
So it comes with about thirty minutes left to go
in the match. Yes, sixty fourth minute, US is leading
one nil. It looked on the surface in real time,

(39:33):
like two guys going after the ball. One guy goes down.
And this is again why people get upset with soccer,
sometimes writhing in pain like you know. This wasn't like
the kid in Canada who broke his leg by.

Speaker 6 (39:47):
Any means to be fair. He didn get his ankle
stepped on and it turned and took off his cleat.

Speaker 2 (39:52):
And yeah, I think a US player did as well.
I'm not mistake. And I think I saw a bloody
sock in a press conference.

Speaker 5 (39:58):
Did I not?

Speaker 2 (39:59):
You did?

Speaker 3 (40:00):
Indeed, badass?

Speaker 2 (40:01):
Did Tilman? Did Tilman not have a bloody sock?

Speaker 5 (40:04):
He did?

Speaker 2 (40:05):
Okay?

Speaker 5 (40:06):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (40:06):
Was there a red card on that play? There was not,
Ian there was not, okay, just checking. So let's just
talk about a should have been a red card or not.

Speaker 3 (40:17):
I do not think it should have been. Really just
surface level the call.

Speaker 2 (40:21):
And I'm asking you, like for me as a US fan,
And when I first saw it, I was just outraged.

Speaker 5 (40:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (40:28):
I watched it over and over again. If you watch
the you know, if you if you slow it down
frame by frame, here's a still shot. Yeah, foot on ankle,
but he first of all, he's looking the other way,
there's no ill intent. It's not even like an overly
aggressed like they're just going for a ball. Yeah, and

(40:48):
you know, like there's no intent whatsoever. It was as
accidental as it comes. And I know, listening to every like,
there's I didn't realize we had so many soccer officiating
experts in the world. There's like a zillion of them.
I think it was sent you one last night. We
want to play that later. Yeah, but everyone, like these
guys that are high end officials, they're like, it's you've
got to everyone said the same thing, Andrews, and tell
help me out here, help our listeners out There has

(41:10):
to be some sort of intent, right.

Speaker 6 (41:11):
Right, And there's multiple layers to this. The first layer
is the fact that you mentioned intent. That's that's the
easiest one to kind of decipher. You could tell, like
you said live time, it just looked like two guys
that got their legs kind of tangled together. And you
can tell that because the Bosnian players weren't even going
straight to the ref to complain about getting a red card.

(41:33):
Usually you would see that if there was any sort
of question that hey, I thought that was a terrible tackle.
None of that they were just looking at their guy
who was in pain, right, So you saw no appeals
from the Bosnian side to try and get the US
player sent off. So that is Number one that tells
me that they didn't even expect there to be a

(41:53):
red card in that situation. Number Two, the other layer
to this is how VAR was used, right, because going
into this tournament there was a concerted effort to avoid
the term they use is re refereeing the situation. And
in previous World Cups where VR has but implemented in
the Premier League and the Champions League and over in

(42:15):
the European leagues, the kind of criticism of VAR is
the fact that any fifty to fifty call would be
go back to the VR referee and they would really
try and decipher it and tell the referee to go
look at it again, right, and they would re referee
the situation. That hasn't been the case up until now

(42:35):
at this World Cup, and I think most people have
praised the use of it. It's been Hey, if it's
even close, we're going to stick with the decision on
the field with what the referee did. We're not re
refereeing the situation here. We're coming to step in if
there's a clear and obvious error, a miss a just
straight up missed call by the referee, and that's then

(42:57):
the only time that VR has been used and they've
had a higher threshold to go and take it to VAR.
And that wasn't the case last night. That was not
the case at all. It seemed it seemed very fifty
to fifty. I won't say it was a bang on
no penalty or no red card, because if the referee
had called red card on the field, I feel like
they would have upheld the call when looking at it

(43:18):
on VR as well, they wouldn't.

Speaker 3 (43:20):
Have overturned that.

Speaker 6 (43:21):
But the fact that it wasn't called on the field
means it should have stayed as a non red card
after going to VR. It's just there's so many layers
to this that just screamed that it should not have
been the decision that was finally made.

Speaker 2 (43:35):
Yeah, I think that's the thing. It's it's you know,
everyone's there's just so we won't spend any time in this.
There's no appeal process. So that's that's a moot point.
I know people immediately think, can you appeal it?

Speaker 3 (43:45):
Yeah, there is, but it's really rare, incredibly rare, And.

Speaker 2 (43:49):
The more likely scenario would be you might actually see
the suspension increase exactly from one to two games. So
you're just like, let's just the hell out of here.
But but I think the one part that would come
into play is it because as the var was using correctly,
like that's I guess the only thing you would wonder if,
like if US Soccer is going, hey, that's like almost

(44:10):
an illegal red card in sense, right, because it wasn't
usually like like if we're going by the letter of
the law, they can't look at that, right, I was
thinking earlier, you know, like in other sports NFL, I'll
just use I'll use sports with with replay, not not
balls and strikes, but NFL and hockey, right, Like you're
not supposed to look at the big screen, right as

(44:32):
an official, I can tell you if you watch I
don't know, I don't know. The NFL is a little
more intricate because I think they're pretty good with like
the guys upstairs can now call down yep. But if
you watch an NHL game, you'll see four officials huddle
up sometimes, and I garret you can watch them like

(44:52):
you can see guys with the out of the corner
eye looking up at a replay. Yeah, and then they
keep talking. I'm like, okay, listen, man, here's what happened.
It's like, okay, well the line has been called, like
you know, like there is a way to do that,
and but you're you're not really supposed to and you're
not going to see someone all of a sudden called
for a major penalty in that regard, like a lot
of times it's for something small. Yeah, this is it
just wasn't used correctly. So that's why I don't get

(45:14):
how how they could still use the red card. Here's
the problem, and this is the this is the part
that's bigger. The red card happens. You survive, you get
through the game, you win, it's all great and fine,
but now arguably you're I mean, sorry polistic. Your best
offensive player is now out for the round of sixteen.

Speaker 3 (45:33):
Your best goal scorer, I would say, your best goal
is car.

Speaker 2 (45:35):
Yes, so Anders, how do they survive the round of sixteen?
What's next for this team?

Speaker 5 (45:41):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (45:41):
I think I am not as devastated.

Speaker 6 (45:44):
I guess the word as a US soccer fan, as
a lot of people would be that Baligan's not playing.

Speaker 3 (45:50):
I really like him.

Speaker 6 (45:51):
He's been fantastic during this entire tournament, and obviously I
would prefer him to be playing. But I don't think
the drop off from him to where I think they
will go, which is to go to Ricardo Peppy as
their striker, is that large. I think it Actually in
some ways, he actually some parts of his game are better.
Obviously some other parts he won't be as good. He's

(46:13):
a different type of player that I actually think fits
a little bit better into the system that the United
States want to play. So like overall, his production might
be slightly down, but I think he actually would get
more out of Christian Polistic. I think he might get
more out of you know, Sergenio Desk Weston McKenney as well,
because he's a little bit better of a hold up
striker that can kind of connect passes with and combine

(46:35):
with his other forwards versus Baligan would be a guy
that just runs in behind and looks to score, which
of course is what you need. But Pepy's gonna be
guy that kind of connects with the other forwards a
little bit better, and he's a little bit better of
an aerial presence as well, so crosses into the box,
he'll be a bigger threat in that aspect as well.

Speaker 2 (46:51):
I think that's a good news if you're I mean
again casual fan, not casual fan, that's great news because
you're thinking yourself, Wow, the guy that basically scored two
goals one was wiped off the off the map is
now out and how do you survive? But what you're
telling us is that they have an opportunity to do
just that.

Speaker 6 (47:09):
Yeah, and he's the guy who stepped in when Poulisic
was injured, right, everyone was.

Speaker 2 (47:12):
Very worried about right after good point, Yeah.

Speaker 6 (47:14):
Right after Christian poulisk got injured after the first game.
He came in for the USA Australia game and performed
really well, and it was him and BALI.

Speaker 2 (47:21):
Better stay healthy. Then does it get little Finn after that?

Speaker 6 (47:24):
I think it definitely does, because then you're looking at
someone like Gioreina, who I think is really good to
come off late in the game, come on late in
a game and provide a spark, But him playing for
an entire ninety minutes is a little questionable on my
in my head, but I have faith in Ricardo Peppy
to come and you know, the do the goods, so
to speak. But this is going to be another test
against Belgium because I think that this team, while they're

(47:46):
not as good, of course as the team that you
faced in twenty fourteen and even in years past, and
I still believe the US to be a better team
even without Florian Belligan. I still believe this is a
bigger test than the US has faced yet in this tournament.

Speaker 2 (48:00):
Why is Raina coming in late when you need to
get more defense.

Speaker 3 (48:04):
Because it's a balance and you notice this, Yes, I feel.

Speaker 2 (48:07):
Like his dad must be like a sponsor of the
team or something. This is like Select Soccer and the
guys like we're giving him a lifetime Achievement award or something.

Speaker 6 (48:14):
Well, I mean it's I don't know if you actually
were kind of alluding to something there, But his dad
is Claudia Reno, one of the best US and the
national team players.

Speaker 2 (48:22):
I am, But I mean, Pochatino's done a great job.

Speaker 3 (48:25):
He's done awesome.

Speaker 2 (48:26):
That's the one I don't get. I don't get the
rain of love late in games. I think we need
more of a defensive presence.

Speaker 5 (48:32):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (48:32):
The tough thing about that though, swim hairs over that.

Speaker 6 (48:37):
But you also you don't want to completely just sub
in eleven defenders, right, You need some sort of like
threat going forward even when you're trying to hold a lead,
and I think he provides that, but you just you
have to make sure that he's going to do his
running and that has been the question mark with him.
And that's the other thing that the US were so
impressive with yesterday is when they went down to ten men,

(48:57):
that's more ground for every player on the field to cover,
and it still looked like the US was the better team.
They were running their freaking socks off, and I love
to see that. I love and mostly counters, yes, right,
mostly counters. But at the same time they did press forward,
yeah a few times. I love that, abolutely love that.

Speaker 2 (49:17):
And that's I think that also goes back to we
talked before coaching, yes, Coachatino like, it's not we're not
going to just sit back and wait right for the
clock to run out if there's an opportunity to counter.
They did shows how coaching matters. I don't coaching matters
in football probably above any sport YEP, soccer and hockey
aren't too far behind, and maybe soccer's ahead of hockey

(49:39):
in that regard.

Speaker 6 (49:39):
Yeah, it's different types of coaching, right, And yeah, I
know I made a comment earlier on Greg show about
NBA and they don't have to you know, it's a
different type of coaching, right. You want to get the
most out of individual players, same with baseball, but with
soccer you have to have a defined game plan and
everyone needs to know their role, like very specifically, and
it has to work together cohesively. And it's so hard

(50:03):
to communicate because you don't get to talk to them
every five minutes coming off the field, right, you have
to convey the message screaming across the whole field and
it's all done ahead of times. So that's why coaching
is so so so important in soccer. And then it's
up to the players too. In the player leadership also
is a big part of that. So the captains, the
leaders on the field that can help convey that message

(50:25):
to other players. That's where it comes in. And I
think it's all been really really impressive from the US
so far.

Speaker 2 (50:30):
Great perspective, my friend, All right, well take your break.
You know SARAUS is going to join us coming up
next talk all things baseball and Mariner specific also anders it.
We won't do daily powerplay. We've already done that today
with the two first round picks. Here, I'm going to
ask you Monday's game. I think the answer is an
obvious Yes, it's the biggest game we've ever had in
US soccer history. But where does this compare to other

(50:50):
events period?

Speaker 5 (50:51):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (50:51):
I think it's the I just we'll kind of get
a little perspective because I think what was going to
happen Monday here in our city is something that is
more significant than anything we've ever seen in our city before,
and that includes NFC championship games. We'll talk about that next.

Speaker 1 (51:06):
It's time for our weekly visit with Eno Serahs of

I just lost it for someon. I'm all back.

Speaker 10 (51:52):
We're all good.

Speaker 2 (51:54):
Thirty two bar and grill. Out Here at the Cracking
Community ice Flex, we're development campus, ending for the young
guys with Cracking. They're heading off for the summer kind
of You can almost melt the ice here and rink
number one and get ready for training camp later on
in August. It's baseball season. It's soccer season, and of
course time not a chicken with a good friend. You know,
Sarah's brought to you by our good friends at Georgetown Brewing.
More on them in just a couple of seconds. Hello,

(52:15):
you know, how are you.

Speaker 11 (52:18):
Doing great? Doing great? It's been a good day.

Speaker 2 (52:22):
Well that's even better congratulation. But it can have a
good day. Why has it been a good day so far?
Can you share?

Speaker 4 (52:32):
Oh?

Speaker 11 (52:32):
Well, it broke a big story yesterday, and you know,
it's nice to not be working so hard on it anymore.

Speaker 2 (52:40):
You know, people tell people about that. Tell people because
our earlier show was teasing that. Tell people what you
broke and what's what's taking place right now.

Speaker 11 (52:49):
Well, I noticed a little while back that the ball
was functioning differently, and Baseball publicly tracks a stat called drag,
and drag tells you how much the ball slowing down
lots in the air, and it's a good way to
notice that the ball is different at least if it's
performing differently. And one little bit of drag, like point

(53:10):
oh one of the drag coefficient change can lead to
five extra feet on a ball hit over one hundred,
So it's a big deal. The last time we had
drag this low that we have right now in June,
it was twenty nineteen. It was the year of the homer.
Twelve teams have team records that were in twenty nineteen
per homers, the league hit six hundred more homers than

(53:30):
it's hit in any other year in the history of baseball. So,
you know, when I noticed that, I said, oh, my gosh,
what is going on? And when I tweeted it out,
a couple people asked, me, well, you haven't heard about
the splotchy balls. No, no, I've not heard about the
splotchy balls. And so they showed me an email from

(53:54):
the league that came in February that said that had
made a manufacturing error and that oil was seeping out
of the yarns on the inside and was discoloring the ball,
so they were splotchy and yellow. And they said, we
tested the balls and we think they're about the same

(54:16):
seam height, the same weight. We think everything's fine, but
we're monitoring the situation and there's nothing we can do
about it because you need like eight hundred thousand balls
for a full season of baseball, and so we can't
just throw away these balls and start using other balls. So,
you know, they were like you know, and for April

(54:37):
and May it seemed like everything was fine. But in June,
the ball is performing wickedly different. I mean, there's the ball,
it's flying now, and we saw an increase in bad
ball distance, unequally hit balls that we haven't seen in
the stackcast era, like a month to month increase like that.
So something's happening in June. The league says it's not

(54:58):
because of the splotshy ball, but it's a little bit
weird to say we have splotchy balls. We have this
manufacturing problem and the balls performing differently than it ever
has before in season. So uh, real, real weird thing
that's going down. I wish that I could nail it
down to say definitively, it's because of the oil that

(55:20):
the ball is performing this way. But those two facts
held next to each other seemed like they have to
be linked.

Speaker 2 (55:28):
I liked when I first read it the story that
you and Evan did. I was like yellow baseball, like
whether they have jaundice or something, Like anybody's said kids
before knows that do sometimes happens newborn and all that. Like,
you got a jaundice baseball here or something, put it
under the blue light will be fine, you know, a
couple of blue lights for a couple of days, you'll
be all good. You move on, But let me go
Terrek's You guys quoted Trek's Google in this as well,

(55:50):
And I'll just bring that up for a second because
I think and you one of the things I love
talking to you about is like you talk to pictures,
you study this stuff and tell me this A pitcher,
more major league pitcher probably has a feel for a baseball,
and if there's anything different, those guys are going to
know it, right, Like, not just because the baseball is

(56:11):
he said, doing weird things, but those guys would know
if there's something different, correct.

Speaker 11 (56:16):
Yeah, Yeah, it was pretty interesting just going around the
clubhouse and you know, messaging as many people as I could.
They there were a consensus the.

Speaker 5 (56:26):
Balls are weird.

Speaker 11 (56:28):
This is the most ball like there's a normal ball
to ball variation because the ball is handmade and can't
ditched at least, and so that introduces a little bit
of noise. But everybody I talked to you said, yeah,
it's weirder this year. The balls are weirder, and a
lot of them, you know, some of them heard of
the splashy ball thing, but was there's also a weird

(56:50):
crisis community communication here, which is that like, it doesn't
really look like baseball. Told teams, you know, because I
talked to three gms. I talked to directors of pitching,
I talked to pitching coaches, I talked to managers. I
talked to all sorts of people, and they were aware

(57:11):
that the ball was weird, but they hadn't heard anything
about the manufacturing error. So it feels to me like
they they kind of told a couple of people and
felt like, Okay, that's good enough, you know, and then
they were like kind of they kind of crossed their
fingers and hoped that it wouldn't be a big deal,
and it wasn't in April and May and then June
was like, oh boy, here comes the story. So yeah,

(57:33):
the pitchers have said that this is this is a
weird ball, and especially pitchers that go down to Triple A,
those guys. I talked to a couple of those, and
they said that it's even worse than Triple A because
what they're trying to do is take the best balls
and give them to the major leaguers. And one of
our sources said, they're throwing away more balls before they
get to the picture, you know, like the catchers are

(57:55):
throwing warning more balls, and harp fires are throwing waing
more balls. So they're trying to select the best pitch,
the best ball in the major leagues and the minor leagues.
That yeah, more of my minor league sources had seen
a yellow ball or seen a sploshy ball and heard
about it, and then they they were like, yeah, it's
even worse than triple A.

Speaker 2 (58:15):
Let's go back to something you said, eight hundred. I
was always wondered that eight hundred thousand balls during the
course of a major league season that's what they produce.

Speaker 11 (58:23):
I don't know, it's an estimate. I mean, you need
you need about you need for like a lot of
pitches in a game, you need one hundred and twenty.
So I was assume you need about one hundred and
fifty a game, and you've got about two hundred thousand
regular season games.

Speaker 5 (58:40):
Is that right?

Speaker 11 (58:41):
No, twenty thousand regular season games or two thousand regular
season games, so times one hundred and fifty plus you
have all of spring, and you have the whole playoffs.
So I think maybe a better better estimate abound five
hundred of them for you.

Speaker 2 (58:56):
That's crazy, though, that's I mean, that's insane. So the
drag is down in June. Somebody needs to tell cal
Rawley that that that's happening. Can you let can you
let last year's MVP runner up know that, you know,
because that would be good?

Speaker 11 (59:15):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, he's the power is gone. I
don't I don't, you know, I don't see anything that's wrong.
But you know, I have told you guys before that
like he gets the ball way out in front, and
I think that's it's just a it's a finicky place
to live, you know, I want.

Speaker 2 (59:32):
To I want to revisit that because if you could.
Somebody asked me about this the other day, they said,
what's what's cal doing different or what is it that's
costing him? You've talked about that getting out in front.
Explain exactly what that is. Is it different this year
than last year?

Speaker 11 (59:49):
Well, you know, when you if you think about a swing,
you finish your swing over your shoulder right though. You know,
the further along in your swing you get, it's not
just like one. It's like the further along in the
swing you get, the more arc you get. So when
you get the ball out in front, you're it's towards
that finishing upwards, so you naturally put them You put

(01:00:11):
some arc, you put some lift into the ball. And
so when you when you live out there, you know
you you do a great job of lifting the ball.
And he has good, really good bad speed, So you
know that's that's good for you normally. But you know,
across the league, the best place to make contact for

(01:00:31):
powers thirty six inch thirty six inches out in front,
and he was the leader last year in furthest out
in front, and he got it right at thirty six
inches right, So he like he was he was optimized
for power. I mean, I don't have to tell you
that he's hitting all the homers right this year. He's
actually not as far out in front. And you know,

(01:00:55):
maybe that's because he wants to see the ball look longer,
make more contact. There's a relationship there, right, because if
you want to get the ball out in front, then
you have to make the decision quicker. And if you
make the decision quicker, you're going to be more wrong
about more pitches. And so you know, I think there's
something where Cal said, oh man, my my swing strike
right is up, my strike out rate is up. I

(01:01:15):
think I have to see the ball a little bit
longer to not make the wrong decision. And that's that's
taken a little bit of power, right, But that's only
that should that should be the difference between like sort
of forty five and fifty five or something, you know
what I mean. So he's still getting the ball relative
to the league fairly far out in front and I
would just say that it's it's a swamp, it's it's

(01:01:38):
it's just not seeing the ball exactly right right now.

Speaker 2 (01:01:42):
You know, Sarah's brought to you by Georgetown Brewing joining
us here on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. We're still in
the world of now. I think we're at least for now.
Andrews correct me if I'm wrong. We're out of the
piggyback land right for a while.

Speaker 3 (01:01:54):
Yeah, as of now, yes, but you never know, and
it can go back.

Speaker 2 (01:01:57):
We're out of piggyback land. We need aund like, hey,
you know what, Andrews passed it along at our afternoon guy.
It just huge jump all over and and we And
the funny thing is I think we we played the
audio for him last week. In fact, he played some

(01:02:18):
of the audio from you last week talking about piggyback
and six man rotation all that, and I'm not sure
if it was convincing enough. He's still mad about it.
But yeah, you know, we do a lot of fun
things here. We do the tracker, the Rob Refsnyder, a J.
Pollock tracker. Uh to see who's going to have a
fewer hits? Well, listen, Jerry Jerry de Poto does a

(01:02:41):
lot of good things. There's he's he's put together a
really good base and we understand that, but he has
this weird thing does does the Poto every year, We've
got to get the you know, help me out, andrews
aj Pollock. Who are some of the other greats from
the past that we've had along the way? Hummel, Tom Yeah,
Tommy La Stella Yeah, Rob Refsnyder.

Speaker 11 (01:03:03):
I hear a lot of right handed, right handed bench
pieces that that.

Speaker 2 (01:03:08):
The numbers tell him that, hey, these guys kill it
against left handed pitching. Uh, and then they get to
Seattle and they don't.

Speaker 11 (01:03:17):
I think it's just really hard for right handers right
like the park is particularly hard on right handers.

Speaker 2 (01:03:23):
It can be, there's no doubt about that. But if
we go back to the pitching for a second, So
there's a lot of talk here and we're kind of
one ring, so you know, obviously, managing a bullpen one
of the key things a manager does in game. We
saw kind of a disastrous week last week. They bounced
back because the Angels are awful and they haven't had
to use a bullpen much in any kind of leverage situation.
But we saw that last week we should go back.

(01:03:44):
We've talked about it before. Six man rotation. Is it
the six man rotation that's hurting them right now managerial
decisions or is it just hey, finding a good high
level leverage reliever is hard, and no, Matt Brash is
really hurting this team at times.

Speaker 5 (01:03:59):
Yeah, I mean it, it does.

Speaker 11 (01:04:01):
Like your your depth chart is just a little bit
shorter when you do that extra when you have that
extra starter in there, and so you know, when other
teams have somebody that can come in and soak something up,
if you're using somebody that you might want to use,
I guess right now Michael Rutger is kind of the
soak it up guy.

Speaker 2 (01:04:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 11 (01:04:23):
Yeah, and between and between those two guys. But see,
I mean already those aren't guys. I don't think that
they had really like written down is going to be
big parts of the bullpen this year. So yeah, I
think I think Carlos Vargas and Matt Brash being hurt
affected their approach. But this is one of the things
that's easiest to do at the deadline. So you know,

(01:04:47):
the nice thing is that if if they don't go
big at the deadline, they can at least try to
get a right handed bat, bench bat and and and
a reliever and not affect their bottom line too much going.

Speaker 2 (01:04:58):
Forward, Sarah's brought to you by a good friends a
Georgetown Brewing. Make sure you swing by the tap room
pick up your beer for the holiday weekend, open ten
am to eight pm. And we've told you about some
of the great beers. The Junior Zaffa I p A
is still one of the best out there. A couple
of my neighbors had to help us out picking up
some stuff off our porch, because you never know in
the mean streets of Maple Valley, Washington, when the porch

(01:05:20):
pirates were gonna get you.

Speaker 5 (01:05:21):
So I picked him up.

Speaker 2 (01:05:23):
Picked him up each a growler of the Junior Zafa
i PA modeled after the Bodhi Zappa recipe, but brew
to be lighter. Still has the same bright tropical aromas
for the citrum, moaic and shannock hops you love, but
with a lower abb at five point four percent. And
if you're kind of doing a session on Saturday for
Fourth of July, go pick up a growler or a
six pack at your ocal grocery store. A Junior Zafa

(01:05:43):
from Georgetown, I brewing.

Speaker 5 (01:05:46):
I need, I need.

Speaker 11 (01:05:48):
I love this weekend. I need to love this weekend.

Speaker 2 (01:05:50):
That' oh, buddy, I got you. Gotta get up here.
I gotta you know what, I'm gonna find out if
we can ship some down to you. That's that's a
that's a that.

Speaker 5 (01:05:58):
Is an Ian thing talking.

Speaker 2 (01:06:01):
Yeah, we gotta take care of Andrews. Remind me, we
got to take care of Eno. We got to take
care of Andrews just moved into his new Andrews is
an old school Manny's pale ale guy, though he's the
flagship guy. And you're gonna see Manny, by the way,
Andrews next Friday at my golf tournament. Let him know
that's your favorite beer. But I got it. I think
I may know some people that that can get that

(01:06:21):
to to uh to you know, and we'll we'll get
that happening. It won't happen by Saturday, but we'll get
it done.

Speaker 11 (01:06:27):
We'll get it done for you.

Speaker 5 (01:06:28):
Uh you.

Speaker 2 (01:06:29):
You guys did a flyover on your podcast, Rates and
Barrels the American League. That's just an absolute muddled mess
of messy, middle mushy metal. Uh what do we call it?
The pillow fight this year in hockey in the Pacific Division,
Anders right as a pillow fight, kind of murky middle
as well. Uh, how how many teams are really in it? Andrew?

Speaker 10 (01:06:49):
Uh? You know?

Speaker 5 (01:06:49):
Is it?

Speaker 2 (01:06:50):
Everybody? Really? Except for maybe the Angels and the Royals?

Speaker 1 (01:06:54):
Really?

Speaker 11 (01:06:55):
Yeah, those are the two. Those are the only two
with single digit playoffs. I mean, it's wild. Even the
Red Sox, who they want to fire Craig Breslo and
they want to burn it all down, They have a
fourteen percent chance of making the playoffs. The Tigers have
had a terrible year. Everybody wants to trade Derek Scougle
to their to their favorite team. They have a twenty

(01:07:16):
three percent chance. My prediction was that the Tigers wouldn't
even sell and that they might even win that division.
So it's everybody's still in it. It's going to be
hard to find sellers. It's going to be a bit
of a hard, hard slog to find sellers in this
market because there's too many teams that say, you know,
we still have a one in three chance or a
one in five chance of making the playoffs. So I'm

(01:07:37):
going to hold on to that. So you know, the
way your team plays of the next thirty the next
twenty eight days, you know, is a real, real big
deal for what they're going to do at the deadline.

Speaker 2 (01:07:50):
How concerned should the rest of the American League West,
which would really only include relevant teams named Houston, Seattle,
and Texas. But how concerns should we be about the
Houston Astros who are now there are three games below
five hundred. Normally you'd say on whatever, but and again
a minus forty six run differential. But it feels like

(01:08:11):
there's a wee biddable menum going down there in Houston.

Speaker 11 (01:08:16):
I don't know, man, I like Hunter Brown, what has
happened in the past. They used to have the stars
and they and then they were able to pumping out
these role players and their player to their player program
was so good in terms of development. Now they still
have the stars, Hunter Brown, Josh Hater, Jordan elbre is great.
The role pieces are worse than they may have ever been,

(01:08:40):
you know. Like I'm not saying like Christian Walker isn't terrible.
I like Cam Smith's long term, but he's got some
real flaws right now. And if you look at that lineup,
I think on any given night there's three or four
holes in it. If you look in that rotation, if
you've got three games against them, you're really you might
even miss Hunter Brown and then think they don't have

(01:09:01):
a good starter this series, you know, and then the
bullpen behind Hater is pretty bad. I mean, Brian A.
Braid's one of the best relievers in the in the
big leagues, and he's like ninety two miles an hour
right now. So you know, I think that this the
secondary quality in Houston is worse than it's ever been.

Speaker 5 (01:09:20):
Great stuff.

Speaker 2 (01:09:21):
Enjoy the holiday, yeah, ever, I mean there was like
the eighties. Enjoy your holiday weekend, even if you don't
have the junior's off, I'll have one or maybe three
four instead.

Speaker 5 (01:09:34):
Huh.

Speaker 2 (01:09:34):
I'll think you good. I think thanks a lot, take
care of you know, all right?

Speaker 10 (01:09:41):
Thanks.

Speaker 2 (01:09:42):
That's you know, Sarah Joni see Athletic Go checking stuff
out Rats and Birls podcast as well, terrific. If you
need a little listening driving around, uh, making your way
through the holidays and the traffic, go check out the
Rats and Burls podcast. Will take a break, come back,
Andrews will tell us how big Monday really is.

Speaker 1 (01:09:56):
Next now back Dean furness on your home for the
Huskies Cracking and the Twelfth Man, brought to you by
Seattle's closest snow call Me Casino and Hotel. On Sports
Radio ninety three point three KJR FM.

Speaker 2 (01:10:15):
All right here we are thirty two Bart Grill at
the Cracket Community Ice Flex. We had a couple little
technical snaffoos, they say, so before we get to Danie
O'Neil here just a couple seconds. Andrews finished your thought earlier.
I asked you how big? What does it mean on Monday?

Speaker 3 (01:10:30):
Yeah, I mean it's just I think it's pretty simple.

Speaker 6 (01:10:32):
It's gonna be the biggest sports moment, sports event in
Seattle history. I of course, I was born in nineteen
ninety seven, so I anything before that is before my time.
But at least in my lifetime, this is gonna be
the biggest moment I think for the city with any
sports like specific event. And I think it's gonna be

(01:10:53):
go really really well. I mean I said it on
Greg Show. If maybe you're not a huge soccer fan,
and you know, maybe you're a little frustrated that there's
gonna be some craziness downtown or the traffic's gonna be
a little bit more. I'll just say for this one day,
lean into it, just embrace it. It's gonna be such
a cool moment to see our city be showcased on

(01:11:16):
the global stage, not just the national stage, but the
global stage. And it's gonna be recognized as in a
many not just an amazing, you know, Seattle soccer city,
but a sports city because I think you're gonna see
kind of the atmosphere, the stadium, the people, everything's gonna

(01:11:36):
all come together, and it's gonna be such a big moment.
And in terms of the US game, the game itself,
I mean, you could argue this is the biggest moment
in US men's national team history.

Speaker 3 (01:11:48):
I think it at.

Speaker 6 (01:11:49):
Least rivals the two thousand and two World Cup when
they played Mexico in the round of sixteen to go
to the quarterfinals, and that's ended up being where they
finished up. If they were to win this game, that
would be the biggest moment in Seattle or in the
US men's nationals.

Speaker 2 (01:12:05):
Where was that match in O two play Korea? Yes,
it's this is bigger. Yeah, because it's here, and I think,
and i'll let you ring up Danny we'll get him
on and get his thoughts on that as well. Danie
Neil's get dress second. I think it's like in Seattle.
You know, we've never won a Super Bowl in Seattle.
We've won three NFC Championship games here in Seattle. We

(01:12:28):
didn't win a NBA Championship in Seattle. That was one
in Landover, Maryland in nineteen seventy nine, and frankly, nothing
else would come close to that. The ms have never
been to the World Series. But I just told you
the numbers a minute ago. This is the biggest sporting event.

Speaker 5 (01:12:45):
Now.

Speaker 2 (01:12:45):
You could debate a lot of things in terms of,
you know, games that matter to more people here and
all that. This is the biggest sporting event that's ever
been here. We had the Goodwill Games back in ninety one,
kind of a knockoff, you know, verse of the Olympics.
But this is this is just a different, different level.
All right, let's get to it. Danie O'Neill standing by.

Speaker 1 (01:13:06):
It's time now for Danny O'Neal of The Dang Apostrophe,
the best Seattle sports writing you'll get out of New
York City. Brought to you by Northwest Handling Systems. From
forklifts to Pella jacks, conveyors, deloading dot equipment. We sell
rand and service all of your warehouse in needs to
request quote today at NWHS dot com or call four

(01:13:27):
two five two five five zero five hundreds. Now here's
he in with Danny o'neo.

Speaker 2 (01:13:34):
Danie O'Neill joined us dang apostrophe, Hello sir, how are you?

Speaker 5 (01:13:41):
I'm good Ian pumped up.

Speaker 10 (01:13:42):
We got the United States of America celebrating at two
hundred and fiftieth and bring on Belgium.

Speaker 2 (01:13:48):
Bring on Belgium, buddy, I love that. Bring your waffles,
bring bring it all, Belgium, your chocolate, bring it all.

Speaker 5 (01:13:56):
We got you Monday.

Speaker 2 (01:13:57):
And that just comes two days after we celebrate birthday
number two hundred and fifty. Can't wait?

Speaker 4 (01:14:03):
What for you?

Speaker 2 (01:14:03):
You're watching from Afar to the Way again. It's funny
because this is weird.

Speaker 5 (01:14:08):
Danny.

Speaker 7 (01:14:09):
You're living in.

Speaker 2 (01:14:10):
New York and normally the world of sports in this
country would center around the East coast. All the US
games are being played out here so far Santa Clara
and then Seattle for a second time this Monday. How
strange is that?

Speaker 10 (01:14:25):
It's awesome, especially because you hear the announcers, and it's
very clear that Seattle, I have a chance to puff
your chest out a little bit. It's weird, right, sure
that Seattle is being identified as that. Maybe. I mean
I heard the playback player now as I say it
last night, best home field experience that the that the
team's ever had. It's pretty awesome.

Speaker 2 (01:14:47):
It's it's phenomenal. We were just talking about this, Andrews
and I last couple of segments. We've had big events here.
Three see what is it foe to four NFC Championship
games have been played in Seattle, all won by the
home team. Those are big, but they're not the Super Bowl.
We've never had a World Series game played here. The

(01:15:07):
closest they came was an ALCS last year that ended,
as we know, in Toronto, not in Seattle. Goodwill games
were in ninety one. They're just kind of, you know,
off brand Olympics, so I mean, they were cool. I
I went to some of those events and covered them
for Como TV, but that was a little bit different.
And frankly, if we're being honest, sorry, WNBA and MLS,

(01:15:30):
none of those things kind of pale. And the Stanley
Cup was one not on the ice, but because of
pandemic in nineteen seventeen. This is the biggest sporting event
ever on Monday, isn't it in Seattle's history?

Speaker 10 (01:15:40):
I believe it is at a national level for sure.
Maybe throw in We had the nineteen eighty four Final
four at the Kingdome. Yeah, Akeem a log one And
I believe then he was Akeem with with the Houston
the Houston.

Speaker 2 (01:15:54):
Cougars, and he was the dream too. He was the
dream that year. He was also called the dream. So yeah, yeah,
that was a big deal. Oh yeah, yeah, but not
I mean college yeah, college though, yeah, college basketball. I
love it. Final four great, this is just different.

Speaker 10 (01:16:09):
Yeah, and the entire country is going to be watching,
and it is the world here. And like watching the
game last night, Ay, that stadium looks really nice when
there's not that horrible football teams low Goo in the
middle of it. I really found myself watching it leave
my stadium last night. I'm like, that's a good looking
stadium as long as that gold is the gold in

(01:16:31):
the in the red.

Speaker 11 (01:16:31):
Isn't there.

Speaker 10 (01:16:32):
Uh, It's just watching how excited and passionate people are.
It's the idea that everybody's fired up about a bad
decision on a red card. Look, I probably haven't watched
enough soccer.

Speaker 11 (01:16:43):
To give you an educated opinion.

Speaker 10 (01:16:44):
However, I believe that was the worst call in the
history of soccer.

Speaker 6 (01:16:49):
And would you agree, yes, percent agreed? Well done, Danny,
You're just you're you're up there with the experts.

Speaker 3 (01:16:55):
Don't worry.

Speaker 2 (01:16:56):
Anders is anchoring our coverage for one hundred states across
the country, so he's agreeing with you. See, daddy, don't
get don't sell yourself short, buddy, Like you're on top
of this stuff. Like you're on top of the soccer
thing right now.

Speaker 10 (01:17:08):
Yeah, yeah, I can even explain off sides and how
it's you have to be even with the second to
last defender, now you have to consider the goalie because
of different permutations that occur.

Speaker 5 (01:17:18):
It's it's fun.

Speaker 11 (01:17:19):
It's fun watching people get fired up.

Speaker 10 (01:17:21):
It is fun watching people get fired up about the sport.

Speaker 2 (01:17:24):
You know what I think? You know, we live in
such a devisive world these days, and just even in
our country, right it's it's you know, what what side
of the aisle or are you on? Do you love
the president, do you hate the president? Do you like
the governor, hate the government, whatever might be, and and
you know, politics and just government and so forth has
has really has really split not just our country but

(01:17:46):
the world. But just if we focus in on our country.
We talked about this on our show a lot Danny
before that before it started. Sports has has an ability
like nothing else. Music doesn't do it necessarily, movie entertainment
don't do it. Sports has an ability, I think, to
unite people that are on very opposite sides of their beliefs,

(01:18:07):
whether it be religious, political, or otherwise. I don't know.
I just feel like you mentioned it kind of in
tongue in cheek, but it's true. In the two hundred
and fiftieth anniversary of our country coming up on Saturday,
I feel like this men's soccer team is doing something,
at least temporarily. It probably won't last, but temporarily doing
something really important for our country.

Speaker 10 (01:18:26):
It's fun to watch it, it's fun to have everybody
fired up. And when I went to sleep last night,
I was in a better mood than I was when
the game started because the US won. And that might
make me a shallow and simple person, and I'm totally
fine with that, because I was really really happy. I
even found myself for a moment wondering, like, man, maybe
Trump should threaten to kick everybody out unless they rescind

(01:18:49):
glow Balligan's red card. And then I realized, okay, step
too far, step too far. We can't go invoke in
global global incidents or any calling for anything. Mostly I
didn't want to suggested on Twitter because it's possible he
might do it, like if he got window that He's like, oh,
that's a great idea. We don't need to disrupt things
that way.

Speaker 11 (01:19:07):
But no, I agree with you.

Speaker 10 (01:19:08):
It's fun to see everybody united and excited about it.
I usually the soccer announcers drive me nuts, especially lawless,
but watching them yesterday is celebrating the goal was really fun.

Speaker 2 (01:19:21):
It's been an incredible run so far, and Monday is
going to be just insane here in Seattle, So can't
wait for that. Danny O'Neill joined us dang aposter you
brought to you by Northwest Handling Systems. All right, let's uh,
let's let's go down the petty road for a second.
But I think it's it's it's more than just that
you wrote about the Diana Russini stuff, and I mean,

(01:19:42):
we always we bring this up, and I think it's
there's some couple of things important before Danny and I
have some fun and just discuss it actually, hopefully on
a more even a serious level in a second. Two things. One,
Diana started. It's funny how I look at her resume
like her house. She really started her on air career
here in Seattle. She was doing updates during Softy Show
and Softie was on ten to one and simulcast on

(01:20:05):
Comcast Sports Northwest right around what twenty ten through twenty
twelve or so, and they brought her out here. She
had no on air experience at all outside of college television.
She was absolutely, honestly got awful on TV when she
first started. I held the microphone wrong. It was just
I've got stories upon stories. She became really good on

(01:20:27):
television and the camera loved her, and she became really
good on TV. But she started her career out here.
So we've known a lot of us have known Diana
for a while my travels during the NFL, my years
traveling in the NFL, I ran into her a number
of times. I kept in contact with her. I always
liked Diana. I thought she was a hell of a
character and fun and just as East Coast New Jersey
as it gets, but also worked hard and grind it.

(01:20:50):
But then all this stuff happens with the athletic and
it all comes to a head. And then we see
the next story that came out this week about trying
to bribe a police officer in a sense by face
timing his favorite coach and just kind of saying it's
kind of using the hey do you know who I am?
Thing to get out of jail free card? That type
of deal. That's the context. And I'll bring in Danny
for this for those I mean, Danny's a great personality

(01:21:13):
in the radio, worked at our competing station for a while,
started doing stuff with Cross and Gas years ago. But
when you were doing that, you were also a newspaper
writer and you have been a big reporter as well,
having to cover the Seattle Seahawks among other things. How
greasy does all this stuff feel? How wrong is it?
Because we can all kind of have fun with it

(01:21:33):
and mess around, But how wrong is this? What's going on?

Speaker 10 (01:21:37):
And what she did well for Diana and I have
run into Diana over the years, and I did meet
her when she worked at KJR back or what she
was doing the Comcast Sports Northwest updates. She's always been
a lovely person and I know a lot of people
friends I have who are good friends with her, And
I feel bad the way that how public this has

(01:22:01):
all been, because it has to have been very, very hard.
That said, she crossed what is a bright red line
in the industry of journalism. You that you're not supposed
to have personal relationships. It's with people that you're covering
that will compromise your coverage, that would make you less

(01:22:21):
than objective. And the idea is, if this person is
your friend, if this person is in the case of
Mike Rabel, there photos indicating that there may have been
something more than just friends going on, that you do
things to benefit that person, that your objectivity is compromised.
So to me, there's a bright red line there that

(01:22:41):
I think the issue, the bigger issue that I've had,
is that there are a number of people who cover
the NFL who have personal relationships with the people that
are coverage that are not being scrutinized or we're like,
they're okay, I'll bring up one dig Lazier gig Lazier
trains various NFL players at an mmagen that he also

(01:23:05):
serves as a reporter. That is a conflict of interest,
like having personal relationships, and so much of the business
of being a sports reporter, these national reporters, which are
the most prominent and the highest paid positions, so much
of it depends upon personal relationships, and it makes it

(01:23:27):
really hard. And it's just that the entire environment is
right for having personal relationships that come in whether it's
Jordan Schultz who's sending coffee machines to NFL executives that
he's trying to call, or inviting Patrick Certain to go
join him on his family's vote in the Dominican republics,

(01:23:49):
or Diana Rassini an inapropriate relationship with one of resources.
But the thing that I've found most entertaining about the
camp footage of Diana Receiving talking the way out of
a ticket, with how much she sounded like an insufferable
NFL reporter in the conversations that used to drive me crazy,

(01:24:13):
with the name dropping, the humble bragging I broke such
and such stories. And I'll say, I'm sure that there
are times that I've sounded just like that of this oh,
flex on who's in my contact list, and you know
what she told me, And it's just the most insufferable.
And I know that there were times I was insufferable.

(01:24:34):
It's an awful and obnoxious part of.

Speaker 2 (01:24:36):
The business, one hundred percent. And what you said, I mean, listen,
the great, the late great John Clayton was that way.
He would always tell you when he broke the story,
you know, and we all love John, and John did
his thing, and you know, but there was that they
Diana just took it to such a different, weird level.
But let's go back to what you said. This is

(01:24:56):
an interesting You brought up an interesting couple guys that
are interesting. Jay Glazer is I think he's truly insufferable
in a lot of ways. But you brought up Jordan Schultz,
Howard's kid, who has made a living as an insider,
not just the NFL but some other sports as well.
But how he gets is there? How much different is
is Jordan Schultz offering up his penthouse in Manhattan for

(01:25:21):
guys to come stay in when they're in town, or
as you mentioned, a vacation for players and developing relationships
basically with that. How how much different is what he's
doing than what Diana was doing with Rabel.

Speaker 10 (01:25:35):
Well, it's a it's a it's a matter of a
different type or a different way, but it's not more
or less unethical. They're all crossing line, and I think
that's the bigger thing of I don't I don't think
and I don't think that that Diana was seeing if
there was a relationship with Brabel, it was some sort
of exchange so she could get information. I think it's

(01:25:58):
just overly personal relationships, which in that case became potentially romantic.
But it's this entire web of personal contacts. But when
you read national level NFL coverage, you very rarely see
a person quoted as saying anything. It's all anonymously sourced quotations.

(01:26:20):
And that doesn't mean that every insider is crossing these
sort of boundaries, but it becomes very hard to tell
who is and who isn't. I think Ian Rappaport does
an exceptional job. I've known Ian for more than probably
going on twenty years at this point. I think he's great.
But all of those things you don't. You can't really

(01:26:40):
make these these statements because so much of it is
being done sort of below surface level. I think Adam
Schefter works as much as he's an information broker as
much as he is a reporter at this point. And
for someone like me who that's not why I got
into sports journal and watching the direction that the industry

(01:27:04):
increasingly took in in terms of information and that being
the commodity, it definitely has changed what that business looks
like compared to when I started in nineteen ninety nine.

Speaker 2 (01:27:19):
Do you think she's ever going to get a job
again in sports media?

Speaker 10 (01:27:25):
It depends on what she wants. She certainly could work
in sports media again. I think Dave Portnoy of Barstool
Sports even came out and said, hey, I'd hire her
in a second. I think the challenge she would have
is that could she become could she re enter as

(01:27:46):
a reporter, as a media member without sort of the
potential affair with Rabel being part of her professional identity
and if I don't know if she can do that,
if she was willing to even address that or say like, hey,
I realized that that's what people are going to say,
But that would take such a you would have to

(01:28:08):
be so hard, and I don't know what she wants.
She very well might feel that does does she want
to be in a public facing job again, because look,
whatever you want to say, I affairs happen like there
that it is a reality of life. And it's not
saying that they're to be excused or that they're but

(01:28:29):
affairs do happen. It just so happens that hers is
become almost unbelievably public, and and that that's just got
to be really, really hard for someone who is by
all accounts, I've not encountered anyone who's ever thought that
Diana is a bad person or or or difficult.

Speaker 5 (01:28:49):
To be around.

Speaker 10 (01:28:49):
She's like, she's really agreeable, and it's I'm not I'm
not saying she's a victim in this, because it's definitely
she crossed what is a clear, clear line. But at
the same time, I think if we all agree, has
the attention accorded this particular incident, does it match the
significance of it?

Speaker 11 (01:29:08):
I think the answers clearly know.

Speaker 10 (01:29:10):
But we're we are we are uh uh uh a
environment a nation that loves thee lear and that includes
me who's writing about it exactly.

Speaker 2 (01:29:21):
Danny and Neil Bunch of my Northwest Handling Systems, they
have everything from forklifts to power raxing. Bear's a lining equipment.
We sell, rent, and service all of your warehousing needs.
Request to quote today NWS dot com or give them
a call four two five two five five zero five
hundred before I let you go. You wrote this week
about the Maritters, Danny, They've they've beaten the Angels twice.
Do they still have a pitching problem or a Dan
Wilson problem?

Speaker 10 (01:29:43):
I think we can feel a little better about the pitching.
We also got Josh Naylor irritating Hedges, which was which
was very funny. I just I don't, I don't. I
don't want to see the piggybacking. I it's clearly they
can't stick to it. So I don't think I want
to see it. Well, we'll see, man. The best thing
they've got going for them is that the American League

(01:30:03):
in general, in the Al West in particular, not very good.
So the door is wide open there.

Speaker 2 (01:30:10):
Yeah, that's we just had our baseball guy, you know,
Sarah's on an hour ago. Like the American League is
just such a muddled, messy, gross mess right now right,
it's just so disgusting. There's I mean, I don't know,
like you, it feels like you could kind of sleep
walk your way through the playoffs. But lo and behold,
here come the Astros, here come the Texas Rangers. You know,

(01:30:31):
you start having to think, Okay, you got to hold
off those two teams and a little wildcard. We talked
about this with you know, I think they've got a
cal rally problem. Like I hate to say it, I
think they got a cal rally problem. He just you know,
whether it's health or not, what have you. Maybe he
got worn down last year. But they need him if
this team is going to do what they want to

(01:30:51):
do this year, and it's not just get into the playoffs,
it's actually take a run of the playoffs. I don't know,
God forbidden year fifty get to the World Series. I
think I think it's safe to say they need Big
Dumper to be better.

Speaker 10 (01:31:05):
You certainly need a better second half from him. And
that was pointed out to me when I wrote about
the pitching. Was Okay, the team goes more than two
weeks without scoring more than three runs a game, But
the issue is how Dan Wilson is handling the pitching staff.
Fair point, fair point. I can't blame Dan for anything.
That's going on with the offense though, and that that's

(01:31:25):
probably the bigger what what what is the issue? They
cal Rawley needs to have a better second half and
from a from a personnel standpoint, you've got to find
another alternative, uh than than Rob Refschneider. And maybe that
is just letting Dom Canzone hit all the time, because
it certainly looks like that is the better option given
what we've seen. Lead.

Speaker 2 (01:31:47):
Yes, I think I think you're right. I'm just looking
at the lineup tonight. Canzone is your d H Crawford,
Julio Canzone, Rosa, Raina Naylor, Raleigh Raley. I mean the
fact that you see cal Raley batting? God, does he
six seven eight nine? Yeah, he's spent in six tonight?

Speaker 7 (01:32:03):
Yeah yeah, yeah, yeay.

Speaker 2 (01:32:04):
But that's I guess what that's all you gotta do.
Like he hasn't given you the opportunity to put him
Hireh in the lineup right now?

Speaker 7 (01:32:09):
That's nuts.

Speaker 10 (01:32:11):
Yeah, it's it is. It's a story that we've seen before,
and I don't think anybody expected cal Rawly to replicate
twenty twenty four, but none of us have taught going
off like a off a cliff like this either h.

Speaker 2 (01:32:25):
Tell folks about the dang apostrophe.

Speaker 10 (01:32:28):
Sir, well, it is something that is hanging around, hanging around.
Like Teddy KG said, you go to Danny O'Neil dot com,
enter your email a dress there a picture of an arrow,
point you to where to do that, and I will
send you periodic emails, including videos. Now had a little
bit of video additions.

Speaker 2 (01:32:48):
Do I thought I saw a little video the other
I saw. I thought I saw your smiling face. I
wasn't sure to click on that or not. I didn't
know if that was spamed.

Speaker 5 (01:32:57):
Okay, you hear enough from me once.

Speaker 2 (01:33:00):
I don't. I don't. I don't need, like all of
a sudden, you know, my computer to start making weird
noises and flashing and stuff like that. If I click
on your face and I'll just I'll leave it be
for now. Let other folks tell me all about it. Listen,
have a great holiday, grade fourth of July celebrating two
hundred and fifty. How'd you start out two hundred and
fifty years? Murica is in the sweet sixteen.

Speaker 11 (01:33:19):
Let's go on, here we go, let's go take it
to Belgium. Make them a.

Speaker 2 (01:33:23):
Awful Thanks buddy, I'll talk to you sooner.

Speaker 11 (01:33:26):
Take care, take care.

Speaker 2 (01:33:29):
That's Danny O'Neil, dang apostrophe. Great stuff with Danny is
always terrific stuff. Love having him on every week. And yeah, good,
good all the way around. Yeah, the Diana we I know,
Softy talked about it quite a bit the other day.
It's I don't know, Andrews, it's a it's a it's
a bad story.

Speaker 6 (01:33:44):
It's just it's in well and for guys like you
know Softy and Moger and I don't know if you
worked with her ever.

Speaker 2 (01:33:50):
I worked for her a lot.

Speaker 6 (01:33:51):
Okay, Yeah, the guy I who know her right and
kind of I mean, maybe not as much recently, but
still you know who she is. That must be a
really weird situation for you guys.

Speaker 2 (01:34:01):
Well, I just always yeah, there was, I mean there
were rumors before from Scott mccluan's wife in d C
and and uh yeah, I mean I I worked with
her on the Blazer stuff because she did after she
was doing Softy stuff, she did some stuff with the
Blazers broadcast on Comcast Sportsnet and then ran into her
quite a bit over the years when she was an
anchor in DC before she went to ESPN, and and

(01:34:23):
then even after that with ESPN, I always liked hers
had fun. I just it's Danny's right. You know, there's
a lot of affairs out there. Yeah, but not all
affairs are.

Speaker 6 (01:34:36):
Created equal, right, And I like the distinction that he
made because there's a lot of like casual friends who
are coming up to me. I was like, what is
this dyninga resiting story? So she had an affair, Why
is that a big deal? And I'm like, well, it's
because of what her job is, right, I think I
think it's.

Speaker 2 (01:34:48):
The same in a sense of the guy and the
executive or the CEO that was in the suite watching
a concert. And remember of the HR the HR lady
was Era or whoever it was, and they were together.
Obviously they were together, right, And and it's like I said,
not every affair is created equal. Like if you know,

(01:35:08):
if you're if you have an affair with your neighbor,
that's probably really bad. Like it's bad anyway, it's even
worse because it's your neighbor. If you're having some you know,
doing something with a subordinate co worker really bad. If
you're doing something to further your career, probably you know,
then compromising some you know what what we would call
journalistic integrity, it's really bad.

Speaker 8 (01:35:28):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (01:35:29):
No, affair is good. They're all different and they're all created.
You know, they're not equal, and some are more damaging
not just to your personal life, but also your professional life.
And I think that's what that's what hers is. It's
it's it's in that regard. So uh yeah, I mean
it's it's a sad world in a sense when barstool
may be your only option as as a woman coming

(01:35:50):
back from this, if she even wants to.

Speaker 5 (01:35:53):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:35:53):
If it was me and I could find something else
to do, probably not making eight hundred grand a year,
but find something else to do, I think I'd be out.
I don't think i'd want to be in the public
eye again. I think that's that'd be no fun. But
let's just be four nine four to five one to
come a tout text line four nine four to five one.
Let's get your thoughts, your comments, your questions, concerns before
we check in with Softy at two forty five.

Speaker 1 (01:36:16):
Now back to and furness on your home for the
Huskies Cracking and the twelfth Man brought to you by
Seattle's closest snow call me Casino and Hotel on Sports
Radio ninety three point three kJ R FM.

Speaker 2 (01:36:32):
Fourne four to five one. That is the Tacoma Dodge
text line four nine four five one.

Speaker 5 (01:36:39):
All right, let's go down.

Speaker 2 (01:36:41):
We got all bunch today.

Speaker 5 (01:36:42):
Oh, you got a lot today, Get a lot.

Speaker 2 (01:36:44):
Why weren't the baseball's helping the Mariners? That's from the EO.
Sarah story that he wrote. Uh, oh, they're not helping
cow or Julio in the month of June, which crazy
because that's the month. All of a sudden, there's no
drag left, right, so it should be helping you should
be helping, helping you along the way. All right, let's see, ude,

(01:37:06):
let's see. Oh, you know what's funny By the red
cart Bosnia football officials footpage trying to defend it. It
was baking US fans. The thing with the red card
is it should be a non story, but the problem
has become because they won right right right. The fact
is though it's a red card, which means it's still
a story because you're gonna miss the next game, right,

(01:37:26):
that's the unfortunate. Yeah, it would have been nice just
to move on from it, but you can't. So then
you have to go and we're all gonna break it down.
And people that know soccer don't know soccer. I'm looking
up like I'll look it up right now. And we
mentioned earlier it's the most watched soccer match in the
history of our country in English. In English thirty one
million it peaked at. It's a massive mass.

Speaker 6 (01:37:47):
I mean for Fox to put it in perspective Game
seven of the World Series between Toronto and la huge,
like Dodgers going for the repeat Toronto massive, right, Yeah,
it was like twenty six million, I think it peaked at.
So having that be what six millions, five million, even
more than that, it's crazy to me.

Speaker 3 (01:38:05):
And that's just throughout of thirty two we got more.

Speaker 2 (01:38:09):
Hi Ian, What do you think, Nick Locatta many of
his other City of Seattle older board members would have
to say about the World Cup here and say that
where they take credit. Remember they're stayming about professional sports
and no benefit to the city. I believe this World
Cup is truly making a difference in the United States
and the world. I think it's making a difference a
couple of ways. First of all, like I mentioned to Danny.
It like I'm looking up here, I see you guys

(01:38:31):
at will Baum and Cornheiser, right, yep, Like the first
four topics they had on their goofy little show to
pardon Me show, it was all soccer. Yepan god, are
you kidding?

Speaker 5 (01:38:41):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (01:38:42):
I've been bringing the country together. The celebrations we're seeing,
you know, bro barge and waterfront and I mean just
drive along the waterfront even on the non game day.

Speaker 5 (01:38:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:38:52):
And the out of town influence is huge. I there's
a story that Fox thirteen and I love you guys,
my old station, I love you guys. They keep running
the story about how the International District in Chinatown is
really just they're they're sad because and they're they're disappointed
because they're actually down a little bit in business. Well,

(01:39:12):
of course, first of all, give your head to shake
a little bit of people. It's they're the opposite direction
of the stadiums. They're not where you would go necessarily
to watch a wait for it, sporting events.

Speaker 3 (01:39:25):
It's not sports bars.

Speaker 2 (01:39:27):
I mean that's a treasure. That International District is a
good treasure in our city. There's that was never going
to be the case where people we are going to
go from out of the country, are going to go
to our Chinatown in Seattle, right opposite the stadiums. You're
not walking. It's if it was on the if that
was looking on the waterfront or something. If it's story,
just it's not a story. Everybody else is thriving right now.

(01:39:51):
I mean everyone else. I talked to guys like I said,
I talked to my guys at the Queen Anne Beer Hall,
Occidental Hall, but the halls of three halls justin and
they say, it's unreal. It's off the hook what they're doing.
Twin Peaks. They've had a couple of their biggest days ever.
Everybody Brad down there, that Safty, here's Safty doing spots
for them. They the first Mexico game, they had their

(01:40:13):
biggest night ever Mexiceto, and they have huge UFC events there.
That's all the time. They basically packed the place out.

Speaker 7 (01:40:20):
That's great.

Speaker 2 (01:40:21):
I can't even fathom what the US does here the
thirty two bar and grill kind of quiet time of
the year. It's not really hockey season. I mean, there's
a ton of kids on the ice right now playing
broomball and learning how to skate. But really effectively kind
of every US game and a lot of the other
games they've been packed, like Belgium the day packed in
here not for the Belgian game last.

Speaker 3 (01:40:39):
Night, but any place that has a TV that has
the game on.

Speaker 2 (01:40:42):
Yeah, it's been great. So Yeah, Nico Locatta and others,
you guys probably hating life because everything you said before
is sounding foolish, right, true. Let's see, it is all
Caps the biggest sporting of they never hosted in the Seattle.
Even though sports provide close to serra cultural value, people
are just going to happen lost time with the NFC Championship.
As such, the guy and Nomaha, Nebraska doesn't really care

(01:41:03):
about the outcome, but many more Americans here all over care.
More people around the worldcare as well. Yeah, I think
I think you're right.

Speaker 5 (01:41:10):
Two six.

Speaker 6 (01:41:11):
I know the World Cup deserves all the talk today.
Don't forget it's now eighteen years to the day that
we lost the Sonics.

Speaker 5 (01:41:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:41:17):
I usually do something on this day and I decided
not to this year. Yeah, I've done something with it
for probably the previous seventeen Yeah, you've been You've been
with me for a couple of though. I have and
and I'm not doing it today. We're two years away
from actually we're a year and a half from getting
the thing back.

Speaker 3 (01:41:36):
So it's a positive day to day. Let's lean into that.

Speaker 6 (01:41:39):
Yeah, after what happened yesterday and then what we're talking
about about how it's booming here in the city and
we're hosting such a cool event on Monday.

Speaker 2 (01:41:46):
So why does everyone in the local media have to
sugarcoat everything before they rip someone?

Speaker 5 (01:41:50):
Just rip them.

Speaker 2 (01:41:50):
Okay, I'm not gonna go I mean, listen, she made
her own bed, so to speak. Yeah, sorry, bad pun,
but I I'm just disappointed because I know that she
worked hard to get to a certain point, did Diana,
because I talked about her like, listen, this isn't ripping her.

(01:42:12):
This is the reality. She wasn't good when she first
started on the air soft Deal'll tell you that too.
We did it. We did a U dub Oregon State
baseball game at T Mobile Slash Safego Park Safego Field
back in probably twenty eleven ish something like that. Oregon
State coming off a College World Series all that is,

(01:42:34):
and the booth was Softy Me and Jeff Nelson, and
there was a Pack ten game organ state was an
absolute power. It was pretty good that year. So we
did a game for Comcast Sportsnet. Diana was doing kind
of the dugout interviews. She she literally would ask a
question with the mike pointed out the person like she
was just over her skis, Like we're in the booth going,

(01:42:56):
what the hell she doing? Three years later, she's two
years later, she's an anchor, the main anchor at the
Washington d C affiliate. I think it was the ABC affiliate,
which is a it's a top ten market, Like that's
not a job you just get for fun, like you've
got to be good. And then she's on ESPN. She
worked hard, like worked really hard to get to where
she did, and then she just lost her way through

(01:43:16):
it away, and that's that's on her. But I I
don't dislike the person. I don't and I don't know
like other people like I don't know Glazer. I don't
like Glazer necessarily on the air. I think there's a
greasy element to him too. Kind of a note. But
I've known rap forever. Ian Rappaport, like Dania, Dania like,
I like Ian Rappaport, and I know he works hard.
I know who is his contacts? Are they the same
as schefters? They're agents and gms, and every agent and

(01:43:40):
every GM has an agenda and they want to get
stuff out there.

Speaker 3 (01:43:43):
Right, it's a professional relationship.

Speaker 2 (01:43:45):
It's nothing professional relationship.

Speaker 7 (01:43:46):
Absolutely.

Speaker 2 (01:43:48):
I'll read this one finally to wrap it up. Hey,
I and I have to disagree with your take on
all affairs being bad.

Speaker 5 (01:43:53):
Some are very very good.

Speaker 2 (01:43:58):
Uh sure?

Speaker 5 (01:44:00):
Why not?

Speaker 2 (01:44:01):
Sure?

Speaker 3 (01:44:02):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (01:44:04):
Manh yeah, yeah, some might be good. I don't know,
that's a you thing.

Speaker 7 (01:44:11):
They could be.

Speaker 2 (01:44:12):
I don't, I don't all, I gotta go.

Speaker 5 (01:44:15):
I'm sorry.

Speaker 2 (01:44:15):
He and I have a solution to your transportation problem
on money. Call up your old friend Brian Abker and
have him fire up Chopper nine fifty to.

Speaker 5 (01:44:21):
Get you there and back.

Speaker 3 (01:44:22):
Bob him solved.

Speaker 2 (01:44:24):
Chop for nine fifty. Did you ever hear those I did? Yes,
those were We couldn't do those today. There's a lot
of things from radio a decade or more ago that
you could not do today. The bigger dances at the
top of the list. That's number one. David Locke Sloppy
Seconds is number two, and coming into the close number

(01:44:48):
three would be Chopper nine to fifty and I think
we've looked back. I don't even think we have the
air checks anymore. It's too bad because those things were
kind of like kind of like Almost Live. I don't
know if you ever seen Almost Live. I'm not actually
Old King show is kind of like a local version
of Saturday Night Live. A bunch of skits like high
five and white guys, a valor driving school things like
that was awesome anyway, that like you can bring some

(01:45:11):
stuff back chapter nine fifty. That would that would get
a sold fire.

Speaker 5 (01:45:15):
That would get a fire.

Speaker 2 (01:45:16):
And frankly, I wouldn't trust the captain to fly me anywhere,
to be honest, Nope, not a chance. Softy joins us.
Next jointing gets right, where are you at today? Buddy?
Where are you at? I know you're on the rock. Yeah,
I'm talking to you. I'm talking.

Speaker 5 (01:45:34):
Yeah, Let's see where am I at? Let me let
me wake up for a second here.

Speaker 12 (01:45:37):
Oh I'm a Jimmy's Yeah, I've been Jimmies on first
across the Tea Mobile Park, getting ready for the Mariners
and Angels tonight, still picking up the pieces from the
Belgium Senegal game yesterday. I'm looking ahead that Monday at
at five with the Belgium US game.

Speaker 2 (01:45:52):
Are you?

Speaker 5 (01:45:53):
Are you a? Are you a?

Speaker 2 (01:45:54):
Jimmy's on Monday as well.

Speaker 5 (01:45:56):
No, I'm off Monday. I'm off for two weeks starting tomorrow.
I'm getting that. Oh you you people can deal with it?

Speaker 2 (01:46:03):
Who you people?

Speaker 5 (01:46:05):
People? You people?

Speaker 2 (01:46:06):
Softy out? God?

Speaker 5 (01:46:08):
You talk about this? Did you talk about the Stephen A.
Smith thing and all the day in his show?

Speaker 1 (01:46:12):
No?

Speaker 2 (01:46:13):
I ignore him? What do you do?

Speaker 4 (01:46:15):
Oh?

Speaker 5 (01:46:15):
You didn't hear what he did?

Speaker 2 (01:46:17):
I honestly, I honestly did not. And I don't know
what did he do?

Speaker 12 (01:46:20):
Yeah, he came out and basically said there's no way
the Lakers are gonna win anything with three white guys
as their biggest stars.

Speaker 5 (01:46:28):
Oh my god. And people are giving him prap for it. Oh,
it's so hilarious.

Speaker 2 (01:46:33):
Oh my god.

Speaker 12 (01:46:35):
Which you know, Hey man, I mean, I get it right,
but let's not have a double standard here.

Speaker 2 (01:46:39):
Oh can you imagine? Can you imagine?

Speaker 5 (01:46:42):
Just and whatever? I mean? It's like, you know, well,
I think what you're talking about.

Speaker 12 (01:46:47):
It like if I went on the air the Crack
and had three African American players as the top three
guys and I said they're going to try to win
with three black dudes.

Speaker 5 (01:46:53):
I'd be fired tomorrow if I.

Speaker 2 (01:46:55):
See you'd be fired that day, right, it wouldn't be tomorrow.

Speaker 12 (01:47:00):
That's where people are just kind of like, hey man,
there's a little bit of a double standard here, and
I mean there is.

Speaker 5 (01:47:05):
I mean, life is.

Speaker 12 (01:47:06):
There's a lot of hypocrisy in life, right, There's a
lot of hypocrisy in art society. There's a reason why
the term double stand standard exists because people have double standards,
and Stephen A.

Speaker 5 (01:47:15):
Smith is taking a lot of heat for that.

Speaker 2 (01:47:18):
So, yeah, I heard your conversation with Dick the other
day in Jackson about just the whole Caitlyn Clark thing, right, like,
that's it makes everybody uncomfortable. But I mean there are
some that you can connect the dots with Caitlin Clark.
It's not that hard to figure that out, right, sure
of course.

Speaker 5 (01:47:32):
Well did you see did you see today? I don't
know where this came from.

Speaker 12 (01:47:36):
They put out some kind of a poll or whatever,
and part of the voting results for those it was
the voting for the All Star Game. So voting results
for the twenty twenty six All Star Game, because the
fan ranks, media rank and the player rank, and then
there's a weighted score for everybody. Well, Kaitlyn Clark amongst guards.
The total combined score was third behind Page Becker's of

(01:48:00):
Dallas and Olivia Miles of Minnesota, but the players had
her number eleven overall. So, look, they don't like her,
you know, I mean, it's obvious, man, they don't like her.

Speaker 5 (01:48:11):
Are you kidding me? I'm not even sure if her
coach likes her? For God's sakes?

Speaker 4 (01:48:14):
Right?

Speaker 2 (01:48:15):
They like do they like the charter jets in the
in the new CBA?

Speaker 5 (01:48:18):
Yeah, like people.

Speaker 12 (01:48:19):
We think that that's because of them. They don't want
to give her any credit. So anyway, we'll talk to
Jerry Brewer at five o'clock tonight. He's gonna wait on this,
and I kind of want to hear what his what
his thoughts are on it?

Speaker 2 (01:48:29):
Man, So yeah, how about Hey, how are you gonna
talk red cards today? Yes?

Speaker 5 (01:48:33):
One percent? We are. I'm gonna, I'm gonna.

Speaker 12 (01:48:36):
I am gonna just grace you with my soccer knowledge
coming up at two o'clock this afternoon.

Speaker 2 (01:48:40):
You're known for your soccer knowledge, and so I'm looking
forward to that. I am looking forward to that. All right,
We better go. We're limping to the finish.

Speaker 5 (01:48:48):
I know you are. I know you are a big boy.

Speaker 2 (01:48:51):
Hey boy, how a good have a good vacation my friends. Hey,
don't buil your hand off on Saturday. A right, those
