All right, well listen, I've got I'm talking to Nick
Vinette right here, who I haven't talked to since I
was with Fox thirteen a couple of years ago. He's
like nine stops in between. He's gonna go talk to
Greg Bell in a second. I've got Mike McDonald coming.
I'd love to talk to you, And I got Mike McDonald's.
Is that cool with you? We'll catch up another time.
He gets it. Good to see you, brother Nick Vinette
back in the one of our favorites in the media,
one of the great dudes out here. But Mike McDonald's

(02:03):
coming on. Hurry up, he's waiting for you, Greg. I'll
do it two things at once. It's a little bit
of a gong show out here today at training camp.
Mike McDonald's making his way here as we speak, so
we're looking forward to having that conversation. I haven't talked
to him one on one since since he was hired.
On the day he was hired, what three years ago.
Andrews so busy show come to final Sares Stocking Baseball

(02:24):
coming up at one twenty today. But the head coach
is well, he was making his way over here, just
got waylaid by a couple of people. So that's coming
up as well. We had a lot going on today, Andrews,
a lot going on. What do you want to hear
from the coach?

Speaker 4 (02:37):
Uh?

Speaker 5 (02:38):
You know how much he cares?

Speaker 2 (02:40):
Yeah? Do you have that? Do you have that idea ready?
Of course? Okay, okay, good, we did not care. One
of the one of the great lines of all time.
So yeah, yeah, no, that's really good. So really good. Yeah,
he's making his way over here right now. Decried to
have a chance to talk to him. I haven't done
that since since, like I said, the day that he
got hired a few years ago. So first day in
pads for the Sea Hawks today as well, so a

(03:01):
little bit more like football out there, you don't they're
trying not to take guys to the ground. We had
one small scuffle during the process as well, so uh
it was it was good to see that. But uh,
you know, all in all, very good. As the head
coach of the Super Bowl Super Bowl champions, I'm gonna
move that huge just so he coach doesn't have to
deal with it right there, he's sitting there. But yeah,
so we're gonna check in with Mike here in just

(03:22):
a second. I'm I can't hear it. What are you saying? Hey,
Mike McDonald here? Hi, Mike, how are you good to
see it? We'll throw the headst on you. We're live
right now on the air, so I'll go ahead and
do that. Yeah, no worries, We're all good. We're all good.
Grab a seat, have a seat, so now can you
hear me? Okay, I'm gonna do this. There we go.
How's that sound? Sounds great? We're an engineering producer here,
all all the ones.

Speaker 6 (03:42):
This is good and it's all it's all live, it's
all live, it's all LiLine color.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
I'm gonna do bigger picture stuff today, but I'll let
the print guys deal with all the minutia. Let me
ask you this first thing though, how was PATS first
day of PATS. That was a great day today.

Speaker 6 (03:57):
Yeah, I'm really really happy with today's practice. Guys came
out with great inten off coming off the off day
morning practice. Uh, it was physical. They took care of
any other. We sharpened each other, we got after it, competed,
talked a little smack.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
It was, it was. It was great.

Speaker 6 (04:13):
It's a really good execution going on. So I can't
wait to watch the tape. What's the fine line between
the physical nature? You want to see? There was one
small scuffle, where do you Because it's changed, there'll be
some scuffles as we go. I mean we want to
take obviously when we talk about twelve is one like that.
That's kind of our guiding principles. That's kind of a
non negotiable. But you kind of know when you see

(04:35):
it like when there's fair physicality and and ones where
you're not taking care of your teammate. And so we
obviously want to minimize the ladder, and the guys did
a great job of that, and so I think I
think that's when the scuffles start to happen. It's when
they feel like there's unnecessary shots. Yeah, which at some
point in camp that's it's inevitable to a certain degree.
But our guys on the whole, they've been they've been

(04:55):
great with it.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
Nice.

Speaker 4 (04:57):
What's the biggest challenge that you have?

Speaker 2 (05:00):
It's coming. I guess it is upset right down straight
between the eyes.

Speaker 6 (05:06):
So love.

Speaker 4 (05:06):
Yeah, it's so, what's the biggest challenge? I was I
got traded the Cowboys after they won their first Super
Bowl and and uh, you know, Jimmy Johnson was doing
all these things to try and say okay, let's you know, listen,
keep the gas going. Yeah you know.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
So, so, so.

Speaker 4 (05:21):
What are the what are the strategies.

Speaker 6 (05:23):
That you think are most important to connect with your team,
Like coming off of yeah, yeah.

Speaker 4 (05:28):
Just just having won the Super Bowl and then say okay,
now I know you're going say let's run it forward.
You got that, But what what what what challenges are are.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
I think we have to.

Speaker 6 (05:39):
I think the first thing we tried to do is
kind of put everything in perspective. So what we use
with our team was, Hey, we we love what we did.
We're very proud of what we did. That's gonna that's gonna
be something that we have the rest of our lives.
You guys earned it. It's freaking awesome. There's a banner,
there's a trope, but that's like a one that's a
that's an end time, one time thing that you can't

(05:59):
even if if you win to the super Bowl, you're
not gonna replicate. It's a different that's a different season.
So we're gonna recognize that. However, I think the things
that we're take the most pride in and believe the
most in is like our way a life. And part
of that is by moving forward all the time and
chasing edges and pushing each other and being the best
version all those types of things, you know, the daily inputs,
the grind of pat you know, yeah, all these things

(06:21):
that like, we cherishes that process and so let's go
nail our process, you know, and part of that is
growing and pushing each other, having new people and having
them integrated the whole process and so like, to me,
when I'm talking about that, like that fires me up.
I think that I think our guys are excited about that,
and uh, and that's what we're and that's what we're attacking.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
Sometimes.

Speaker 6 (06:40):
You know, we've we've had a couple of days where
we're probably didn't necessarily hit it in certain aspects of
our team, and we kind of just Okay, well we
missed it. Let's go, let's go what do we do
we need to do now to go go nail it today?
And then you just kind of, you know, take it
one bit, one day at a time, try out to
be too cliche.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Mike McDonald, who is the head coach of the defending
Super Bowl champions, How does that sound? By away? Sounds good?
You just you just downplayed with you a little bit.
But I wonder at what point and how at what
point did you sit back and just say I can enjoy,
I can feel satisfied, I enjoy I have that Moniker,
I'm gonna I'm gonna get that ring. There's a great
video of you and your wife and your son on

(07:16):
the field. Afterwards, I think she said something like Hey,
how was your day? Which is a great line by her,
But there you go, and congratulations number two on the way,
thank you. At what point did you just kind of
maybe sitting at home, maybe in March, maybe in February,
say damn, we did it. Oh, you know, I don't know.

Speaker 6 (07:36):
You're probably not gonna believe me, but it's just I
think it's something that it's kind of stored away that
like that happened.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
Does that makes sense? Well, that's that's that mentality of
the coach, right, you just said it. But yeah, you're
always looking forward, so you haven't really been able to
sit back.

Speaker 6 (07:51):
And just but like, why would you want to, like
have you guys ever in your life to sat back
and be like, yes, does.

Speaker 4 (08:00):
That ever happen?

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Why are you looking at it at anything?

Speaker 6 (08:03):
You know, like I you know, like yeah, I mean
like if you like, if your son plays little league
and they win the championship, you're gonna enjoy the heck
out of it, right, and then the next day you're
gonna go to basketball practice like you know, or school
is a week. You know, it's just you're gonna love,
You're gonna be proud of that that happened. But like,
you're not gonna go to the beach and just be
like the best, you know, I'm just gonna sit here

(08:23):
and do nothing. I think that's an interesting No. I
think I think we can both relate to that as
parents of kids.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
All both our kids played collegiate football, and I think
you probably are more proud of what Jack's doing sometimes, right, yeah,
totally totally like then with then what you do and
stuff like that. I don't know why Peers is looking
at me when he said something like, Dave Piers here,
I haven't accomplished anything in my career. So I'm just
in here. Michae'donald with us right now.

Speaker 4 (08:44):
Yeah, yeah, I'm curious. You know, if you look at
the history of schemes in football through like decades and decades,
there was a time when the veer nobody can stop
the veer or the affirmation.

Speaker 3 (08:56):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (08:56):
The eighty five Bears were so damn unique. And one
thing about that everybody, every single scheme on either side
of the ball eventually got you know, solved to some degree.
How much of what you're doing where I mean you
took them in and in offensive coordinator for the Patriots
who won six Super Bowls and and you made them

(09:18):
look really confused. How much of your scheming do you think, Hey,
we've got to keep evolving because otherwise people are gonna
figure us out.

Speaker 6 (09:31):
Well, the first thing that I've that I've learned, and
this is coming from like football dork that made made
my bones on a computer watching tape, Like, what's what's
gonna give us a chance to win games?

Speaker 2 (09:44):
Is our style? How we play the game.

Speaker 6 (09:46):
When we say twelve is one, it's like, we want
to create the feeling that you're playing more than eleven guys.

Speaker 2 (09:50):
So that that's that's.

Speaker 6 (09:52):
The chemistry, that's the connection, that's the toughness, that's the
that's the shape that you're in. You know, that's the
clarity what you have to play with. So that's kind
of the non negotiable. But to your point with the scheme,
you have to evolve. You have to evolve and the
things you know you're gonna evolve from year to year.
In the off season, when you have those opportunities to
kind of study and see where the game's going, where
you need to go, maybe maybe include some of the

(10:13):
problems they're gonna be able to solve that's coming forward, Like.

Speaker 2 (10:16):
So that that's part of it.

Speaker 6 (10:18):
During the season, Like the seasons evolve, you know, and
I think we've gotten into an interesting spot with our division.
It's like we all kind of know each other so
well that the game plans evolve within the game, you know, right,
Like you know that they they'll do things that you write,
oh shoot, they're doing that because they realize that we
do this, okay, so now we have to So there's
like these they do these little marginal like incremental evolutions

(10:41):
that happen in like shorter timeframes too. So but it's
kind of like kind of the question like do you
sit back and relax, Like no, just we just want
to I love, like, what's the next what do we do?
What do we do next? Teams are going to find
something to do against us, and or we might be
missing a piece or two pieces or something. You know,
the roster's gonna change. And so I think that's just

(11:01):
how you have to think about it every day. You know,
you just have to try to keep finding new solutions
and ways to attack and figure out what teams are gonna.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
Try to do it against you. The process then sounds
like it you enjoy the process. It's not like we
have like a checklist on the wall. So all right,
this is the process. What do we you know? But
it's just it's a mentality.

Speaker 6 (11:17):
I think about how we do business and how we
go about, you know, our just kind of way of
life every day.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
Yeah, when I was thinking about doing this today, the
last time we spoke was one on one was the
day you were hired in the side room over there,
and it was I mean, will win for you? What
things going on? And I remember we talked a little
bit about John Snyder that day, and I want to
go back to that because here's a GM that I
mean to me in my mind. I don't know, you
might would agree. He's got to be the best GM
in the football right now. He's got two super Bowl
championships with two separate quarterbacks and two separate rosters and

(11:43):
two separate head coaches. What he's done is remarkable in
this game. So we all know that. But for you
as a head coach when you came here, you had
to buy into John Schneider but also have that rapport.
When did you feel that and what is it about
him that makes him special and kind of separates him. Oh,
that's a great question. Thanks for setting that up.

Speaker 6 (12:02):
I think that I don't know if it was a
buy in. I think it was an alignment from the
get go. And we have two different styles about how
we kind of do what we do, but like I
think we share a vision about like what is really
important to us. But in terms of like the atmosphere,
we're trying to create in the building, what you know,
like Seahawks culture, what that means, you know, and we're

(12:23):
building off of what they've built, you know, through you know,
Pete and Coach Holmgan's years and all that.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
So I don't there wasn't necessarily buying.

Speaker 6 (12:31):
Now there's some things that like mechanisms that he did
that I wasn't used to, And for me it's like, yeah,
of course I'm gonna trust John Schneider, like you know,
he wants this is the way he does. Okay, it
sounds great, like we're gonna give this a shot.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
You know.

Speaker 6 (12:44):
So if I came in guns blazing and I'd just
be absolutely foolish. But when I when I think of
our relationship, I think there's so many times even now,
but especially in our first first year or two, like
where it was so foggy for me and it was
just not clear or we were going through something, and
he could have easily just came in hot, you know,

(13:05):
with with the answer or you know, you know, put
his thumb on the scale. But he created this environment
with me where he let me. He just he kind
of figured it out to where I could I could
come to the conclusion through his like guidance and his help,
if that makes sense. Yeah, And he's just got so
he says, he kind of thinks like three dimensionally like that,

(13:26):
which is really cool, but but takes the edge off,
you know, in all of his interactions. So it's a
it's a special combination. And uh, he's a sharp cookie, man,
I'll tell you what he's He's he's really.

Speaker 4 (13:38):
Impressive, as are you, Mike McDonald with this. Uh uh.
When people ask me about Brian Florey and and what
to expect, I say, I don't know. I haven't seen
set up a game and call a game. Yeah right,
and and it neither have you. Right. But what I
say is that my best thing that I like about
Brian Floyd is Mike McDonald hired him. You're you're gonna

(13:59):
be tough on offensive coordinators.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
You have been.

Speaker 4 (14:02):
What was it that you needed to see and hear
from Brian Florey when you talk to him, that that
made you satisfy. This is he's he's a never time
play caller, but he's my guy.

Speaker 6 (14:15):
I don't know if I want to be known as
hard on our offensive coordinators, like a good working together,
you know. I just I really appreciated how he saw
the game and like what was important to him on
on how to build an offense. Given offense, well, you know,
it's easy to get in an interview and say, hey,

(14:35):
we're gonna run this game and we're gonna be this
and we're gonna have all the things, but to him,
it was it was about how we play the game.
And there was so much parallel to how we want
our football team to play, you know, and how we
built our offense last year and how that coincides how
we play special teams and defense. And I think him
having been on the other side of the ball and

(14:56):
on special teams, so his career is you know, give
him this three sixty perspective of the game, which is
really cool, and he sees how it's all connected. You know,
you could tell he's incredibly sharp. He's a great communicator.
There's no bs, you know, there's no fluff.

Speaker 2 (15:10):
Which is which I always appreciate.

Speaker 6 (15:12):
And uh, and he can coach the heck out of
a football team, you know, and so being able to
have like he can see the quarterback through the lens
that the quarterback needs to be coached, but he can
also connect that to the timing of routes and how
we play combinations up front and how we get in
out of how we operate.

Speaker 2 (15:30):
And and he's opening new ideas too. You know.

Speaker 6 (15:33):
It's not like just like, hey, this is this is
a non negotiables you know, from A to Z. It's
he's always he's trying to look to get better. And
it's not like I'm like critiquing. I'm like, we're working together.
You know, we're where I'm asking him question, but what
he's thinking he's asking me.

Speaker 2 (15:46):
You know.

Speaker 6 (15:46):
It's just it's just kind of a like a tag team,
you know, which is a lot of fun.

Speaker 2 (15:50):
You mentioned the details with him the other day, Yeah,
like it's I thought that was an interesting comment. You
said that you're learning from him every day. Oh yeah,
and it's details and the little things like how you
carry the ball. I mean, we do a segment every
Monday called Hardcore Football, and you will break down as
hardcore as it can from an x NFL quarterback for
us dummies out here. But he talked, we've talked about it,

(16:11):
like hey, he's carrying his ball, like little things like that.
Is that what it is? Like the little things that
jumped out of you.

Speaker 6 (16:16):
Yeah, like you know in the spring now like now,
I was just doing an interview earlier. But like training
if you if you look at training camp through like okay,
it's this long period of time. But if we could
so somehow we could stack all these meaningful reps like
that's when you create something cool, that's when you that's
when you're building your team. But if you're just doing
the motions, like you know, you're getting break here, brick here,

(16:39):
it's not like.

Speaker 2 (16:39):
Cohesive, you know.

Speaker 6 (16:40):
And so like the way that the off season is
now is there's so many rules on what you can
and can't do. And so he was able to put
it through the lens of okay, even though we're doing
like routes on air in May, like this is how
we're simulating what happens in games, and this is how
it applies. So it's like little things like that that
I'd never offensive football like coach like that, you know,

(17:02):
to that level of detail that far out with a
big perspective and getting the guys to buy in, and
you're creating those habits that now shows up when we're
in pads. And you know, we saw play with Coop today.
I mean, Coop's a master of this stuff. But like
he catch the ball, drop step, you know, makes a
guy like he's in the open field, slashes off the guy.
You know, it's probably a touchdown, you know, And I

(17:23):
think we've maximized, you know, that opportunity for that type
of stuff to happen because because of how we coach
that type of stuff throughout, you know, since we got
here in April.

Speaker 4 (17:32):
Mike McDonald with this huge kind of partially joked, I
assume the few days before the Super Bowl that Nick's
injury was keeping you up, waking you up. I wasn't joking,
you weren't joking, Okay, he was, okay, not partially joking.
All serious. Okay, So what is it today that might

(17:52):
wake you up concerned about your football? Give us something
First of all, that you say, you know what, I
sleep really well because of this, but what might Yeah,
go ahead.

Speaker 6 (18:02):
I had I had a night well I said, it's
a dream, but it was really a nightmare that Eric
Kennedy retired last nay, okay, equipment. Well, you know, he's
just like he's such like a just a just like
a connected He's like he's an absolute institution here and
just like a just a founding, massive member of her operation.

Speaker 2 (18:19):
And so I got it.

Speaker 6 (18:20):
I literally when I got in this morning after I worked,
I went in and I was like, you're not retiring?

Speaker 4 (18:24):
Are you?

Speaker 2 (18:25):
Like you're still here? He's like, no, I'm here.

Speaker 6 (18:27):
I was all right, thank god, that's probably the answer, honestly,
but honestly like like foot off the gas, not abiding
by like an honest process, just going through the motions,
you know, getting getting just complacency, you know that that
type of stuff.

Speaker 4 (18:46):
Is you seen any of that?

Speaker 2 (18:48):
No, But I still I still think about it. Yeah, trying.

Speaker 6 (18:51):
I'm trying to say I'm not I'm trying to not
say the word worry, okay, trying to focus on I'm
getting coached. I'm getting to coach. I thought it was funny.
I'll just say this.

Speaker 2 (19:01):
I enjoyed the interaction between you and our good friend
Greg Bell the other day when he's pressing Uneven worried
you were not gonna give us an answer. You were
not gonna give us answer. I'm sure you won't know.
I appreciate Greg, and he tried. It was as a
hell of an effort. But you brought up in that
same conversation as Zach Charboney for a second, and outside
of the football player, you talked about his spirit around
the team. And here's a guy coming off a bat

(19:22):
acl we see him walking around and and the running
back position. Probably you're not worried about it. You're not
gonna use that term, but I know you like to
get him back. But what is it about his spirit?
Maybe taking a bigger picture, because I heard the word
connected a lot with his team and how connected and
tight they were. Guys from different backgrounds, different races, different rounds,
they were drafted all connected together. And it sounds like

(19:44):
Sharbon is a guy that kind of helps with that
a little bit.

Speaker 6 (19:47):
Definitely. You know he uh, he was putting. He's been
in some tough spots since we got here. And it's
like the leadership behind behind the scenes, I think is
the first thing, Like in tough times, he goes to
the he goes to his teammates. You know, it's like,
it's not Zach, it's my guys, you know, And it's

(20:08):
not I don't know that because of like he tells me,
it's because you can see it, you know, and that's
that's how he operates. And so if I could see it,
the players definitely feel that.

Speaker 2 (20:17):
Every day.

Speaker 6 (20:20):
When he's when he was healthy, just like the daily
work ethic of all the things. It's just like clockwork,
you know. And then to hear how he's gone about
his process to come back.

Speaker 2 (20:30):
From this injury.

Speaker 6 (20:31):
It's not an easy and easy injury to come back from,
you know. But you hear about the reports and you
hear and you see the progress and where he is now.
I mean, you just you just want the best of
the guy, you know. You just like he just he
deserves the best because of because of what he's done.

Speaker 2 (20:46):
I bring him up for this reason. It because every
football team you kind of look from the outside, like
all of us looks from the outside, and you see,
like who are the leaders? The quarterback is normally going
to be a leader for you. Ernest Jones comes across
as being Julian love guys like that. But to have
this team reached the levels it needs, you're gonna have
guys that maybe, like a fan might be listening, maybe
we're thinking why, I don't know, Zach Scharbonay was that guy? Like, yeah,

(21:07):
the Blue guys that connected guys? How many of those guys? Like,
is character a big thing that you guys look for
to in the draft and everything else and free agency?
And like what what does that mean to what you're doing? Yeah,
I mean we used to like, I totally want Seahawks.
You know, then they come.

Speaker 6 (21:22):
You know, you could have a Devi Witherspoon who's super
outgoing and competitive and you know he's got his style
style away, but he's he's just as much of a
Seahawks as Zach Sharbonay, as Charles Cross a j B.
You just you go right down the line with his team,
and you know, it's hard to find a guy that
creates any drag or you're not excited about seeing, you know,

(21:43):
And so I'm sure the players feel the same way.
Which is just so much such a fun team to coach.

Speaker 4 (21:47):
As we let you go, give us just one story.
Fans love to hear stories. There must there must have
been something that was cool or interesting or note worthy
about Super Bowl winning head coach Mike McDonald. Maybe it's
a Starbucks or something something. Somebody looked at you different
than they did before. What what? What?

Speaker 2 (22:06):
What?

Speaker 6 (22:06):
In the experience I was, I was invited to play
in the American Century Championship in Tahoe, and so that
was that was a great That was a great honor,
and it's a great They do a phenomenal job and
you're meeting people that you're like, I literally looked at
like one hundred people that time, like, my life is
so dumb right now that I.

Speaker 2 (22:23):
Get to do this.

Speaker 6 (22:25):
So I get But so but the one thing that
everyone told is, I look, the first T you're gonna
be you know, your nerves are gonna be wrolling, so
you know, get ready for that. So okay, you know,
I'm thinking about it anyway. So I get to the
first T. They you know, they instead of introducing me
as you know whatever the accolades, I was the two
thousand and five physics student of the year since high
school and that's who they uh, that's how they introduced me.

(22:47):
So I I get over the ball and I've played.
I played a lot of golf this summer, and I
just remember thinking like, I don't know how I'm gonna make.

Speaker 2 (22:53):
Contact with you.

Speaker 6 (22:55):
Just don't top it, don't And there's like a couple
hundred people there and I get to the black of
my swing and I just my body just like unravels
and I topped the ball into the hazard no. Twenty
yards in front of all, and it was just like, well,
can I get any worse than this?

Speaker 2 (23:10):
Boys, like a good time. I've seen your swing. You
played it a holly too and the bay I saw
the swing and I'm like this, are you single digit
where I am?

Speaker 1 (23:19):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (23:19):
Yeah, I'm back out. So topping the ball is not
in your repertoire ever, well apparently it is so, But
that was that was.

Speaker 4 (23:26):
A great experience. We had a lot of fun. But
that'll bring it back down. You have a new appreciation
for kickers, that's right, right, and that game winning yeah,
I mean and.

Speaker 6 (23:34):
All honesty, Like it is a great test of like
process and thinking about like what you need to do,
not worry about all whatever is doing. So it'll be
a story for a team meeting at some point.

Speaker 2 (23:42):
I got one more was wrap things up and you've
dressed it a couple of times. But it's wild to
see the hard knocks thing out here. And it's different too.
I'm a TV nerd, That's kind of where I started
the business, and so I like, I'm watching these guys
and trying to figure out what they're doing. They blend in.
Great job by the Seahawks. Brian O'Connell like they blend in.
They weren't kind of the same colors as your coaches
and stuff, so you only see them. But for you
guys as a team, you said, embrace it. I think

(24:03):
everyone's embraced it here. What is it like having those
guys around?

Speaker 6 (24:08):
It's been seamless. Yeah, Like the first the first day,
you know, there's there's yeah, there's where they are. There's
the first day it's like, okay, that's someone. I'm not
used to someone being right there. Now there's somebody there.
I'm not used to being miked up. Now miked up.

Speaker 2 (24:21):
But it's just kind of like anything, it's just.

Speaker 6 (24:23):
Adapt and and just go about your business. I mean,
there's so many other things you need to be focused on,
you know, And I need to practice what I'm preaching too,
Like we got to just be us, right, you know,
so if we're kind of out of pocket, we're kind
of out of whack, then then uh, it's fully.

Speaker 2 (24:37):
No good for anybody. Do you think fans will be
surprised by what they say? It's Tuesday, right, I think
it's the first episode Tuesday, the fourth Do you think
fans will be surprised? What do you think is gonna
come out? Like anything? In your back of mind saying
some people be surprised.

Speaker 6 (24:47):
Sometimes I'm like, how do people do people think that
we actually like can get a first down r out here?
Because it's like sometimes its kind of maym so, uh
it'll be maybe, I don't know, we'll see how crazy
it seems in there, but yeah, sometimes you're like, yeah,
we're kind of we're kind of crazy.

Speaker 2 (25:01):
But I love it. I love it. Well, listen, thank
you you.

Speaker 4 (25:04):
Yeah, all good appreciated.

Speaker 2 (25:06):
Coach hammer Down that is Mike McDonald, the head coach
of the Seattle Seahawks, will take a break, come back
with more in ninety three point three.

Speaker 7 (25:11):
kJ FM Now back to Ian Furness at the Virginia
Mason Athletics Center and our special coverage of Seahawks training
camp brought to you by the Boeing Classic BUN Sports.

Speaker 8 (25:25):
Radio ninety three point three kJ.

Speaker 4 (25:27):
R F m.

Speaker 3 (25:29):
H.

Speaker 2 (25:30):
We're back here to Virginia Mason Athletic Center, early practice today.
No fans, very business like pads on for the first time.
Really no music out here either, which was a kind
of a first. Usually he's got a little bit of
music plans. They're quiet outside the Blue Angels that provided
plenty of noise. Uh. Humilan is sitting down with us
for a few minutes.

Speaker 6 (25:46):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (25:46):
Mike McDonald, I just uh, you know, we've you and
I've interviewed and separately together whatever zillions of people over
the years, uh, including Pete, Mike, whoever else. And I
said up the day that he was hired. Uh, And
I remember, I'm not patting myself in the back as much.
I just remember saying that day was hard. He he
he had this this aura about him, like there's a

(26:08):
he's got a presence. You know, not every coach has that,
right be it factor. I just feel with this guy
a little bit. Uh.

Speaker 4 (26:15):
I can't speak more highly of him. I don't know,
you know, he's in the running for my favorite coach
ye professional sports.

Speaker 2 (26:25):
I don't know. I just love his humility.

Speaker 4 (26:28):
There's a he pulls off this rare accomplishment where he
comes across and he is genuinely humble. He is a
humble guy, but he is he has no pushover whatsoever.
He walked into that team after Pete Carroll left and
and it's my conjecture. I'm not in all the players' heads,

(26:50):
but I think my sense is that they were immediately
drawn to his intelligence, right, and but then he there's
an understated demanding Like when I played for Don James,
that was it was understated, it was overstated, it was ubiquitous,
it was every aspect about Don james coaching style was

(27:12):
very demanding and and business like, no nonsense. And I
think what what he does, because he's adopting with the times.
You know, what's innate in him is that he has
kind of this care for you, Hey be yourself, but
he has a hard line and he's very demanding and

(27:32):
and if you're not meeting his threshold, now, all of
a sudden, he'd become He can become a you know,
a Bill Parcells Don James red ass, you know, like
like this is not the f and standard. So he
pulls that off the combination of those two are are
not often blended. And I don't know. I would love

(27:52):
to play for him. You know, he would come across.
He comes across as like I'd liked hard coach coaches
I did. I played for some soft coaches in my career.
I played for hard. I liked all the hard ones
because I you know, I didn't like it when somebody
was grab ass in or not hustling a teammate, you know,
because it's like, wait a minute, we're cheating ourselves. We're

(28:13):
not reaching our potential if you're doing that. And so
I loved it when coaches and I saw everybody and
you know it might be directed to me too, but
I want I want to coach to hold this very
demanding and accountable. He does it in a very cool way.

Speaker 2 (28:28):
I I, uh, you know, watching today's practice. Let me
wrap up mcguck. Can you stick around for the final
segment of the hour? Yeah, I got we got five
minutes here, we got take a break. I want I
want to get some thoughts up from you. Just now
that you've watched these guys for a few days, we
haven't had a chance to catch up with you. So
we'll do that. In the final segment of this hour,
we wrap up McDonald with this. You know, I was
talking to one of the guys, one of the staffers
before during practice today, you know about McDonald walking in here.

(28:51):
What you said, like, he walks in here after Pete
Carroll has this incredible run and John Schnudder established GM.
Obviously things change with the power structure the organization with
John uh kind of leading it up now and Pete
not here anymore. But you know, Pete had a core
group of guys. They probably had a couple elements frankly
for being honest, Jamal Adams, and a couple of others
that they needed to get rid of. But this person

(29:13):
was saying that what McDonald was able to do from
day one was get everyone to buy into him as
a first year head coach. As a first year head coach,
and then he admits to us that that first year
he was in a fog at times. Right, it was
probably overwhelming. Some guys are going to get run over
by the truck at that point. This guy embraced the challenge,
and I kind of chuckled because he makes it sound

(29:34):
like that first year they were not good. They were
nine and seven or nine an eight, right, not an eight? Yeah?
Like they still a winning record, yeah, eight, ten and seven,
ten and seven math not my strong you know that,
but ten seven like, and the way he's talking about
the first year, I was just over like, oh my
fog and shar kind of got me down.

Speaker 4 (29:51):
Yeah, that's part of the humility.

Speaker 2 (29:53):
You were ten and seven. Yeah, yeah, that's the low bar.
Yeah yeah, yeah, in the last game, it didn't matter ramsca.
You could say nine and a half and seven and
a half what you know what?

Speaker 4 (30:04):
Everything he did he was two years in Baltimore.

Speaker 2 (30:08):
Damn, that's a question I would have wanted.

Speaker 4 (30:10):
He was one year at Michigan, two years in Baltimore.
This is the first time he's had year three, you know,
so you would expect that he could keep building on it.
You know, we touched on, hey, you got evolve, right
because everybody's gonna figure you out. So I think we

(30:31):
asked him a question that was tangent, you know, related
to that. But specifically, we've never seen Mike McDonald coaching
a unit in the third year and look at look
at the ascent that he had both at Baltimore and
and here from year one to year two. And by

(30:51):
the way, at Michigan, he took him from ninety fourth
or ninety fifth in points to seventh. They were giving
up thirty four and a half points the year before
they got here. They got them down to seventeen in
one season.

Speaker 2 (31:03):
Their only issues they play in this division that's got
two other juggernauts in it. I mean, if we're Matthew Staffords,
the reality is is that if you you know, I mean,
everybody wants to do their you know, whether you look
at Vegas and odds or power structures or this, that
and the other thing. I mean, everyone loves the Rams
and rightfully so what they did in the off season
is remarkable and they were one play away from and
we always I think we all can say this, if

(31:23):
they go to the super Bowl, they win it, right
like judging all what they what the Seahawks did to
do England. But that's your that's your role, Bloy. Any
other division, we'd be making plans for the playoffs and
NFC Championship game right now. You got to go through
the Rams. You got to go through the forty nine ers,
depending on what their health is. It's an incredibly tough division,
like incredibly tough. But this is the kind of guy

(31:43):
that that we didn't you know, we didn't care, We
did not care that kind of stuff. You kind of
feel that attitude coming through. It's like, whatever, here we.

Speaker 4 (31:49):
Go, man, we could talk to that guy for an hour. Yeah,
or hours.

Speaker 2 (31:52):
Let's do this. Let's take a quick break, we'll come back.
We'll wrap up hour number one. He was able to
play eyes on the padded practice for the first time,
the first pad of practice today. I want to get
your thoughts if I can, on running backs. If you
were I know you you've talked about that this morning
and you said chuck this morning. I think it was,
or maybe it was softy last night, whatever it was,
just say, once they put the pads on, I want

(32:12):
to see what the running backs look like. Yeah, because
a lot of guys look good when no one's tackling
you not tackling. But yeah, physical, it's elevated, the contact
elevated today. All Right, real football today almost almost h
closer to real football than what then seven or seven.

Speaker 4 (32:29):
Closer than what they happened. They were in pads. They
were in pads. They had a very professional practice. We'll
talk about that.

Speaker 2 (32:35):
Yeah. Uh, here in a second.

Speaker 4 (32:36):
But but yeah, the running backs are of worry for me.
He he not gonna worry because.

Speaker 2 (32:43):
I say the worried word. Did you say the w word?

Speaker 4 (32:45):
Well, I probably shouldn't say worried. There's nothing about this
team that worries me. All right, Maybe it's a but concern. Yeah, question, Yeah,
I got a handful of questions. Yeah, I'll so do
I we'll do it next.

Speaker 1 (33:01):
Now back to Ian Fernets at the Virginia Mason Athletics
Center and our special coverage of Seahawks training camp, brought
to you by the Boeing Classic on Sports Radio ninety
three point three k j R f M.

Speaker 2 (33:17):
Genia Mason Athletics are big thanks to Mike McDonald who
stopped by today. Will probably we did not care. Nope,
we did not. We did not, But we did we
care that he came by. It was awesome. Hum, Mellen's here.
First day in pads, third day. You've got a chance
to lay eyes on these guys in person. I know
Softy hate storylines and narratives. I'm gonna I try to
point this out to him. He may hate all that

(33:38):
a he also does it in his show. Yeah, when
he asked you questions, and b the people listening do care,
they like they care about those things. So I'm gonna
ask you this.

Speaker 4 (33:46):
Well, you got the world champions. Yeah uh, and they're
spoting the ball and they're they're they're practicing. Today was
the first day in press, so.

Speaker 2 (33:53):
I'll ask you this. Yeah, we talked about running backs.
If you're just kind of putting your pyramid together, your
list together in terms of things that you will watch
throughout the rest of training camp and in the preseason,
is the running pack position number one?

Speaker 4 (34:07):
Number one? Probably? Yeah, probably. I think it's the you know,
losing Kenneth Walker fourteen million dollars. You know, I'll be
wondering all year whether or not it would have been
worth keeping him. But I do think it's interesting to
note that today the first pad practice, the first the

(34:32):
first team drill ones against ones, and Jadarian Price lined
up and not only did he was he in the
huddle and on the field, they snapped the ball and
they handed him the ball. The very first padded carry
of twenty twenty six was given to Jedarium Price. So
there's been a lot of talk about, well Hallani is

(34:54):
in the ones that may be just that's another question.
Let's listen. If you're listening to go, why don't you
ask him this? Trust me, we got all those questions,
you know, but and we'd love to probe the running
backs for fifteen minutes as well.

Speaker 2 (35:11):
Yeah, he's not. He's not going to give us stepth
chart on running back. Yeah, there's a waste, waste of
time and energy if you do well.

Speaker 4 (35:18):
A question to ask him would be, Hey, some coaches
they say, hey, if you're number one draft pick, you're
you're you're you're a starter right now.

Speaker 2 (35:26):
You Charles Cross day one was playing with the ones
that left tackle exact day one.

Speaker 4 (35:31):
That's any other examples. Yeah, Others say, well, you know,
have a few reps, kind of let your teammates see
that you earned your way into the number one.

Speaker 2 (35:41):
So what so what do you see from Price?

Speaker 4 (35:43):
Well, I'm concerned about uh, his his frameka and yeah
he's he's got skinny legs, particularly you know, his knees, ankles, calves.
He doesn't he doesn't look like most NFL running backs.
That is not to say, let me say this that

(36:05):
does That doesn't mean that's a guaranteed he can't play.
He could play seventeen. Hell, he could play twenty games
this year, uh and and never get hurt. But I'm
just establishing a correlation that most running backs are are
have a thicker build. They take an immense pounding because

(36:29):
obviously they're carrying the ball. They're once whoever's carrying the ball,
they're trying to murder you. And it's not one guy,
it's you know, three, four guys can be hitting you
at one time, and so the body goes in weird
ways and takes on some some serious forces. And as
a general rule, you see those running backs there's a
there's a thickness to their stature, not not just their

(36:51):
their their musculature, but also their bone density. And I
don't know, he just looks a little slight to me.

Speaker 2 (36:57):
What did you see from him running the ball? Well?

Speaker 4 (37:01):
He uh, I saw some good vision things from him,
you know, on a lead play where he's he's going
up and then the lateral quickness and then go. He
showed a lot of that.

Speaker 2 (37:12):
Notre Dame.

Speaker 4 (37:13):
Okay, that's nice. That that that's that's why he's a
first round draft pick. So we saw some of that.
He's h he's a little bit of a heel toe
guy that uh you know, you know for for those
who know uh track parlance. You know you've got your
stride length, you got the your stride. You know when

(37:35):
when your foot hits the ground the strike. Obviously time
can be uh in infinite decimals and infinite fractions. So
so how long is your foot on the ground, you know,
down to one hundredth of a second, that type of
thing when you you see, you know, real twitchy guys

(37:55):
have a fast strike. You know their their foots only
in the ground for you know, uh, everybody's as a
fraction a second, but a fraction of a fraction of
a second for.

Speaker 2 (38:05):
The really twitchy dudes. Right, So I.

Speaker 4 (38:07):
Feel like there's a little bit of a heel toe
uh uh uh, you know, lack of of of elite
twitchy burst. But I think his lateral quickness, his vision,
he showed that today. So I think it's for me.
There's a lot of unanswered questions that there's a lot
to like, there's some fair things to be curious and

(38:27):
and and again unanswered questions.

Speaker 2 (38:28):
Yeah, about two minutes here left. Anything else jump out today?

Speaker 4 (38:32):
Well, I think Bud Clark, uh, he's running with the
twos and I and but but they he started with
the twos, but then they gave him a rep with
the ones, you know, and and so that would be
Tayo Katta because Julian Love is not going anywhere, right
And I think of them mostly of as a too

(38:53):
high team. They play a lot of single lie, but
I think of mostly as a too high. So a
year ago you had Julian Love, a Kobe Bryant in
the back end, and then the the the nickel and
the dime guys down the line of scrimmage are were
we're even even worry is the Sam linebackers in there

(39:14):
in what what the league would call a nickel what
Mike McDonald would call his bass, you know, that's one dB.
And then when they go dime, then they dropped Witherspoon in,
you know, and they had Rik Wollan and Josh job
on the other side. So neam I Pritchett is a
starting cornerback for your Seattle Seahawks.

Speaker 2 (39:33):
Like that.

Speaker 4 (39:34):
That's been a constant out here. So get to know
the young man from Auburn, the no opposite opposite joke. Yeah,
So yeah, and they uh they have you know, they've
because even Worry is out, they've got some you know,

(39:55):
he's there their starting He's taking even Warriors spot. Now
he's too eleven pounds. Eman Moory was two twenty uh
In years past, you had Witherspoon playing a lot of that,
even on first down, you know, and going against hardball
sets from the offense. And remember now Witherspoon was one
hundred and eighty one pounds at the combine. Evan Worry

(40:18):
was exactly two twenty. So what there's an obvious upgrade there,
And so that allowed Witherspoon the year before he only
had thirty percent of his snaps. This is Witherspoon outside
corner set seventy percent, everything else, some variation inside depending
on the front and the coverage, but against seventy percent inside,

(40:39):
so last year was fifty one percent. So he goes
from thirty to fifty one percent outside. And I had
thought they wanted to acquire Bud Clark to maybe be
the dime guy. So Eman Worry on one side over
one slot and Bud Clark to be on the other.
But they're playing him more in the Kobe Bryant replacement

(41:01):
mode as opposed to down at the line of scrimmage,
so there's seeing some things schematically. Bud Clark is I
like how he comes downhill. He so, so the interesting
thing about Mike McDonald is that there's areas where he says, no,
I need some force and violence, and you know, the
the uh Derek Hall, for example, chosen over Boy Moffin right, Like,

(41:26):
there's just a there's more physicality. But he plays with
a lot of guys dbs that are relatively light. Julian
Love was a corner in college. Kobe Bryant was a corner.
In fact, he won the Thorpe Award for the Best dB.
But he was a corner in college. Bud Clark is
is a skinny little safety, so so he he will

(41:51):
target guys that are relatively light by NFL standards for
that position, namely safety. But then he he obviously knows, well,
we gotta we gotta have some physicality somewhere, and he
picks it up in other areas, you know, to have uh,
you know d you know, big Kat Williams is one
of the biggest defensive you know, athletic defensive tackles in

(42:15):
the league. And and having having those edge guys.

Speaker 2 (42:19):
Well you look through there, I mean, as you're saying that,
I'm thinking to myself, they got a lot of guys
that would, as you're saying, kind of come across to
me as light in that regard. I mean Julian Love, Ocatta,
Bud Clark, Job Witherspoon, Hell Throw, Drake Thomas starting linebacker,
inside linebacker. Yeah, they but but they do all play
probably a style that he likes to see whether it's cerebral,

(42:41):
also used to come a downhill and play a physical brand.
Then you got other guys like, yeah, Derek Hall is
not playing light, well, he's playing light.

Speaker 4 (42:48):
No. As a general rule, uh, if if you're lighter
and you're relatively low on the physicality, the bam bam presence, yes,
then you've ought to bring something else. And that something
else is the athleticism to turn uh uh and and
get to the football faster. And then of course if

(43:10):
you're if you're running fast enough, you can still create
the violence by virtue of the speed that's.

Speaker 2 (43:18):
Coming in on you.

Speaker 4 (43:19):
If like Julian Love is a guy that doesn't need
to break down, you know when he comes, he takes
a great angle and he's not a real big guy.
But because he's not breaking down. He's he's got the
physics behind him because he comes up on ball carriers
going near full speed.

Speaker 2 (43:37):
A good stuff. Appreciate you coming by that, of course. Good.
Good to have you here. Uh, I don't know you're
noting to that. I don't know, No, I don't. I
don't think so well oiled machine here you're supposed to,
you know, punch in and punch out like that. We're
like a union here. Nine to five.

Speaker 4 (43:56):
Fella, well I was went four hours this morning, so okay,
well yeah, that's that's that's a lot more than enough
of me.

Speaker 2 (44:02):

I know, I know.

Speaker 2 (44:41):
Why now I say that we's gonna go out and
spin a day.

Speaker 9 (44:44):
Yeah, this would be the day that Wu just absolutely
shoves and can he just put to Dandy tonight right?
Narrative to rest right?

Speaker 2 (44:51):
Because Joe she and still kind of on that hill.

Speaker 5 (44:54):
He's dying on that hill.

Speaker 2 (44:55):
Let's be honest. Not you know, Sarrus He's coming up
at one twenty today. W NBA has just Bennet c
Theelstorm co owner Celeste Keaton from attending the team's next
five home games. She had a pretty ugly exchange with
two fans during Tuesday's matchup with the Indiana Fever. It's
all based on the transgender issues of bond that are
going to be coming up on the ballot here this fall.

(45:17):
Whatever side you're on, you will not hear anything from
the other side, and if you do, it'll turn into
an acrimonious argument. And that's exactly what happened on Tuesday,
and ugly situation if we're being honest, not becoming of
a co owner of a professional sports franchise not enough
if she disagreed with someone. NFL baker Mayfield said Thursday
he felt disrespected a little bit that he and the

(45:39):
team cannot reach an agreement on a new contract before
his apost deadline. It started training camp. Things are going
swimmingly down there in Tampa Bay right now?

Speaker 8 (45:45):
Yeah good?

Speaker 5 (45:46):
Getting a two?

Speaker 2 (45:48):
Yeah yeah. The avanas like he's out, I'm out, And
here's the eighth. He thinks he's an NHL player. By
the way, he's going to give you a list of
eight teams he'll go to and nobody else.

Speaker 5 (45:56):
It's probably gonna go on the Rams. Let's be honest.

Speaker 2 (46:00):
If that happens, and I'm like, how yeah, well, his
contractor's no chance.

Speaker 9 (46:05):
Let's see Rams in the football Vegas Golden Knights and hockey,
and Dodgers in baseball. Three of those teams are just
for everyone wants.

Speaker 2 (46:13):
Again. The only way you make it work, though, is
in with the Rams is if like, you got to
cut some people, I guess right, yeah, And even then,
even then, the dead cat money's gonna hurt you. So
don't I don't think he's out there. I hope I
don't think. So Let's get to our number two.

Speaker 2 (46:56):
All right, we're here at the Virginia Mason Athletics Center.
It's early practice today, first day at full pads. They're
done there. I'm basically by myself here now on the
patio is my man'grapher from the King has left. He
was left. Everyone's left. Wow, it's just me. I feel
like the old days. Yeah, I'm waiting for Marshawn to

(47:18):
come driving by this single seed speed bike like you
did that day with with pucking me. That's good, uh
they because back then when he was dead, they practiced
at ten in the morning. Yeah, so we were always
out here by ourselves in the afternoon asking ourselves why.

Speaker 5 (47:33):
Are we here?

Speaker 2 (47:37):
Practice has been over for four hours. The show is
just now starting. But we had some great moments and
Marshawn driving by his single seed bike speed bike was
the greatest one ever that Bennett did. That too was
once as well, but Bennett actually stopped buying said Hi, Yeah,
Marshawn rang his little bell, literally had a bell on
the on the bike, I kid, you know, rang it,
smiled at us, drove by and then about ten minutes later,

(47:58):
drove by again and I'm going to be seen again. Yeah,
that's so good. Was that? That actually made all the
days here for you know, with no guests and no
nothing going on, sitting in the sun. Yeah, made it
worthwhile to have that, those moments with Mark.

Speaker 5 (48:08):
Yeah, you got to see a couple of things that
some people didn't get to.

Speaker 2 (48:11):
S Yeah, that's Marshawn. Whatever. Here we are, let's do
our thing. Yeah, ding ding ding ding? Uh what you
have a thought on if people miss We had Mike
McDonald on the first hour humiling at me and uh
and it was a great interview a ton of and listen,
it was big picture stuff that we weren't going to
get into the minutia of today's practice. We'll do that.
I think Corbyn's gonna join me coming up at two today. Uh,
so we'll do it with him. Then you heard Hughes

(48:32):
thoughts a minute ago as well, you had a question
about McDonald.

Speaker 9 (48:34):
Yeah, I mean, I just wanted to point out because
you know, this is something that I think so many
people associate with him, usually with NFL head coaches.

Speaker 5 (48:41):
It's like he's either a scheme guy.

Speaker 9 (48:43):
He's like a guy that draws up plays or you know,
can can find a way to scheme guys open offensively
or the opposite defensively, or he's a he's a culture guy,
or you know, he's a he's kind of an intangibles guy.
And I think Mike McDonald, through the first year plus
of his uh tenure, it was always viewed as kind
of like the defensive version of like a Ben Johnson, right,

(49:04):
just an absolute mad scientist that would scheme anyone open
and fine or sorry open and I talk about offensively,
but it just.

Speaker 5 (49:12):
Saying yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He was always a scheme guy.

Speaker 9 (49:15):
But the more I the more I hear from him,
the more I talk to him, and I'm wondering if
you view the same way, it almost feels like his
intangibles get really overlooked in terms of what he looks
for and building a culture and uh, you know, kind
of how he brings the team together, so to speak.

Speaker 2 (49:31):
So there was a there was a thing in the
at the his first year, and and I could but
I'm not going to sell the guy out, because we
all say things that that sure our miss our mistakes
and and you know, years later just sound dumb, okay,
But there was there's a guy on our station, a
person our station, that was saying that in terms of

(49:53):
Mike McDonald, this is his first year. He doesn't look
like he's in command. He doesn't like he's he doesn't
look like a head coach, doesn't look like an NFL hit.
It does look like he's dead, has a command of
what's going on the sideline and the team and all this.
I'll never forget that because at that point I had
done a sit down with McDonald. I had talked to
him enough. I've been out here enough just and I say,

(50:13):
talked to him in the scrums and so forth, and
talk to enough players to know that that couldn't have
been further from the truth right fast forward here to
two years ago. And so I bring that up for
this reason. I think he's always had that about him,
the presence, you know, like just kind of that aura
around him as a head coach, and and you know,
some guys have it and some guys don't. And in

(50:34):
all sports, in all sports, you know, And I think
I think if you look around over the years, there's
you know, man and managers have had it and haven't
had it, right, I mean, if we're being honest, Dan
doesn't feel like he has no he does not.

Speaker 5 (50:47):
Yeah, and.

Speaker 2 (50:49):
Dan Bilesma definitely didn't have it with the Kraken right lane.
Does Holmgren had it? Moura at this level did not?
For example, I think people will tell you Dennis Ericson
didn't really have it at this level. He's got that
about him, you know, Hughes Hugh can speak on it
far better than any of the rest of us on

(51:09):
the station. But as a defensive guy, defensive coach, he
has this. He's a mad scientist, right, he does things
that nobody's ever done, very much like McVeigh or others,
or Shanahan or you know Ben Jonson, like he's he's
an innovator in that regard and the ex'es and the
o's on the defensive side. But what makes me a

(51:31):
great coach is he has the other intangibles you're mentioning
as well every player I've talked to and you've been
on almost all the interviews you've taped him or done
them live with me over the last two years. Anders really, Yeah,
every player I ask about Mike McDonald and every guy
speaks in massively glowing terms about him and who he
is and what he is and what he brings. And

(51:52):
I think we're going to see that with Hard Knocks.
I think with the heart when the Hard Knocks thing
comes up. What I'm really excited about it. First of all,
I'm excited to see some stuff behind the scenes that
we don't even see exactly, you know, like like that
none of us see and and you know, I I
I think that'll be kind of fun in the bowels
of the of the Virginia Mason Athletics Center, or inside

(52:13):
of a huddle with guys wearing Seahawks uniforms and helmets
as opposed to other teams that we've seen them all
these years, and in Hard Knocks. But I think we'll
see everything you just said about Mike McDonald asked about
Mike Donal. I think we're gonna see that, and then
something I think we're gonna see who and what he
is you know, Dan Campbell became.

Speaker 5 (52:30):
A star exactly. That's kind of yeah.

Speaker 9 (52:33):
I And now it's kind of alluding to that too,
because like you have the two ends of the spectrum
for head coaches, right, the guys that are just very
much scheme guys like you know, like Kyle Shanahan, right,
or just a total Dan Campbell just I'm gonna get
everyone riled up, sort of well.

Speaker 2 (52:47):
Like like Campbell, I think Campbell before Hard Knocks, people
just said, well, this guy's.

Speaker 5 (52:51):
Just a meathead, yeah right right, Like he's just he's just.

Speaker 2 (52:53):
An like he was a tight end and he's just
kicking guys ass of the line of scridge and he's
just a you know, like you said, raw raw football coaching.
He should be coaching high school football on a Friday
in Texas, right, Like he's just you know, and and
and then you have to see Hard Knocks and you
see you see the relationships he has with players, you
see the relationship of the conversations he has with a GM,

(53:15):
and you go, there's a lot more to Dan Campbell
when I thought, right, I think I think with Mike McDonald,
there's probably a perception around the league because don't people
don't hear him talk that much, you know, and he's
not you know when.

Speaker 5 (53:24):
He's not a sound bite king or anything like that.

Speaker 2 (53:26):
No, it's not like mc veigh gets because studs great,
you know, and his voice is rasping. I'll tell you what.
I'll tell you this breaks, you know, like all that,
and that's McVeigh.

Speaker 8 (53:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (53:38):
Well like McDonald is a lot more subdued and quiet
and kind of thought is this is cerebral, defensive, genius,
mad scientists. I think we'll see in Hard Knocks a
lot more Mike McDonald and and who and what we
hear from the players all the time. That's I can't wait, man, Tuesday,
the first episode is be awesome. I think on maybe
on Monday, I'll probably do it. I've got a I

(53:59):
got a little cheat, you know what they're doing so
from inside sources egg Yeah, I got a little rundown.
So we'll tell a little about that later in the week. Okay,
Ineno Saras from the Athletic will join us talking all
things baseball. Coming up next, it's time for our weekly

quieter now as the Blue Angels have finished their practice
session as well, so we can check in with Eno
SIUs talk some baseball as we get ready for a
trade deadline on Mondays. See Mariners wrapping up a series

(55:12):
with the Dodgers tonight, and there's a lot to get to.

Speaker 3 (55:16):
Hi.

Speaker 2 (55:16):
You know, how are you doing great?

Speaker 3 (55:18):
How about yourself?

Speaker 2 (55:19):
We're good, We're good. Nice beautiful day here in Seattle,
sitting outside and enjoying things quite a bit. Didn't enjoy
the baseball game last night from a local perspective, But no,
we did not. It looks like more like we're used
to seeing lately. Before I get into that, I do
want to ask you this. We'll get into the Mariners
in a second. But I know you guys talked about
on the Rates and Berells podcast, and we brought this

(55:40):
up yesterday. Tigers and Trek Scouble. Why do you trade them?
Why do you not trade them?

Speaker 3 (55:49):
Well, you don't trade them because you still have a
twenty percent chance of making the postseason and the American
League is wide open. You also can put, well, we
don't know that'll be a qualifying offer, but in the
past you've been able to put a qualifying offer on
him and either get him for a year or get
something back from when he leaves. So whatever you get

(56:10):
has to be like beyond worth that. But the reason
you do trade him is because you're not playing that well.
And despite like projection saying you're the best team in
your division, you haven't played that well like that in
a while, and your bullpen doesn't look very good and
it may just not be your year.

Speaker 5 (56:30):
Huh that sounds very familiar.

Speaker 2 (56:31):
Man. Yeah, well, I guess, I guess I bring that up.
It's baseball maybe more than other sports. Maybe I'm wrong here,
you know, you correct me if I'm wrong, please do.
And I'm wrong a lot, but baseball more than their sports.
It feels like you are so much on a year
to year basis like most other sports. I can't like, hey,
you know what're we pink a little bit of a

(56:52):
step back this season, but we were a playoff team
last year and we can point to these reasons why
we still have this good core group of guys or
this superstar. We're not gonna move and we're gonna see
if we can sneak into the playoffs, or hey, let's
let's get going next year. Now, obviously his contract is
the issue, right, that's the problem. Uh, But but it
just I mentioned this to Andrews yesterday. I hate it
for baseball. I'd like to see superstars spread out a

(57:14):
little bit more, you know, and playing for teams that
are the non traditional Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, you know,
the ones we see on national TV every week. And
maybe I'm just too idealistic or you know, too old
or too Pollyanna, you know, but I just I don't
want to see Trek Scugle moved. And yeah, if he
goes to the National League, it's better for our team here,
but I just call me crazy, I don't want to
see the guy moved.

Speaker 3 (57:36):
Yeah, I mean, I like it when stars stay with
their teams longer. And you know, I do think that
even you know, for the right player, like you know,
the the Mariners aren't top top tayroll in the in
the the league, but I love the contract they came
together with Julio to to create because that's one where

(57:56):
like if he plays an MVP level, he gets what
he gets, a great contract, and if he doesn't, then
the Mariners get a little flexibility. So I mean, I
thought that sort of you know, creative thinking could really
help a lot of And you start to see it
like Milwaukee Brewers have now signed Cooper Pratt their starting shortstop.
They signed up a forty team to the big leagues

(58:17):
for fifty million dollars for sixty years or something, and
you stop with cold Emerson, like there's more and more
of that going on when saying, hey, we'll at least
lock you into six or seven years here, maybe get
a year of free agency by giving you the money
up front, and that that's a thing that can work.
But you know, in terms of the year to year thing,
I think that's bang on. And one thing I think

(58:39):
about is we do these projections. If you do a
projection for a player, it is better than a coints
like your you're right, I don't know sixty seventy percent
of the time. You kind of get that player pretty good.
Right now, Let's say you're projecting a team. Well, you
take a bunch of seventy percent correct bets and you
put them on top of each other. What you get

(58:59):
you get more error, right, you sort of compound the error,
and what you find is that the error band on
team projections is ten wins. That's one. That's one standard deviation.
So that means it's not at all weird for a
team that you've projected to be a ninety win team
to win one hundred or win eighty. And since so
many teams are projected to win like eighty five eighty six,

(59:22):
they could win seventy. You know, that still wouldn't be
that much of an outlying season for them. So it
puts that concept of a window kind of to to
a lie actually, because you know, a window is only
a sort of a relative thing. Speaking like you could
you could say, you know that the Orioles could win
it all next year, that like that wouldn't be that weird.

(59:45):
It wouldn't because they would probably projected to be like
an eighty six win team next year, eighty five win team,
and you know they just have to win ten more
and have a good postseason. So I do think that
that is a it's a feature in baseball. It's it's
a bug, but it's also a feature. It's like it's
a both things. You know. I like it because you know, injuries,

(01:00:05):
poor play, advancement, all sorts of there's all sorts of
chaos and the numbers and every season, you know, feels
like just a whole brand new thing. Like look at
the White Sox, man they're in for I know.

Speaker 2 (01:00:15):
I know it's crazy. Well, and you mentioned Baltimore. I
mean they're a great example. They're Baltimore first clans. Okay,
the three below five hundred, and they're eleven and a
half out of first place in the Vision. Oh but
they're two and a half this gay window, yes, and
two and a half out of a will time, right,
so they get they could get there, and in a
way they go Do you think just we talked about

(01:00:37):
the collective Barty agreement, salary caps and stuff a few
weeks ago, do you believe there's a lot of things
in play when the trade deadline comes up. One of
those things, obviously, is the fact that twenty four of
thirty teams are effectively still in a playoff race, Like
if they look at the standings there realistically, they can
make an argument they're still in it. And then the
teams that aren't really don't have maybe a lot to give.

(01:00:57):
But so that's one factor with who will be available
with the trade deadline. Do you think there's anything to
the fact that most teams probably deep down feel like
there's gonna be some sort of lockout or strike or
whatever you want to call it next spring, And I
wonder if that affects it, maybe a sense of urgency
or hey, maybe I will hold on to a trek
scogle because we don't even know what the landscape's going
to look like financially here in six months.

Speaker 3 (01:01:20):
Yeah, I don't know exactly how it's going to affect things.
I would think that generally, uncertainty makes front offices nervous,
and uncertainty would reduce risk taking. So I guess if
I was gonna if there is a way to bet
on the trade deadline being lackluster, you know, I might

(01:01:42):
bet on that because if you you know, one thing,
I started to see a little bit of a hundred
Greens on the market for the Reds, and zach Netto
might be on the market for the Angels. And the
reason for that is to say, well, there's only five sellers.
So if the sellers are selling rentals, yeah, they can
get a few prospects here or there. But if the
sellers say, nah, dude, like you can maybe have our

(01:02:04):
shortstop it's under contract for three years, they might get
a haul, like we're talking Juan Soto esque hall. You know.
So these rebuilding teams are saying, well, you know, there's
only like four or five of us that are really
going to sell hard, Like maybe we should sell hard
and sell something that you know, isn't just a rental
and see if we can get some a big haul.

(01:02:24):
So that's that's how they're thinking. But I wonder if
we'll just hear a lot of rumors about that, and
it won't actually happen, because what will eventually happen is
they say, well, maybe we'll be able to keep these guys.
Maybe it'll be a calf and maybe this. You know,
so we don't know exactly how it's going to look,
and maybe these cost control players that we have are

(01:02:45):
going to just be even more gold going forward.

Speaker 2 (01:02:48):
You know. Sarah Joni's cursey at Georgetown Brewing. Georgetown Brewery,
of course, we got seafair this weekend. Great place to
stop by, pick up your growlers to go, six packs
to go. Junior's office still there, which is a sensational
summer Bereau lighter version of the Body's offa the orange
cans you'll see in the ballpark, I'm sure starting tomorrow
when the M's come home, taking on Minnesota, then Detroit
next week. Georgetown Brewing Okay, you know makes sense of

(01:03:10):
this for me. We talked about it last week and
you went through the reasons why we can be concerned
about road Brian Wu. Road Brian Wu wasn't scheduled to
start on the road in Los Angeles. Now he is.
There's a lot to this and a lot to unpact.
They're taking Bryce Miller moving him back one day. Apparently

(01:03:31):
Bryce Miller's velocity has been down. They're a little worried
something's going on there. So apparently twenty four hours will
make a difference at the expense of road Brian wu
going against the Dodgers, you know, makes sense for it.
Make makes sense of this for us, will you?

Speaker 3 (01:03:44):
Yeah? I mean the thing with Bryce Miller was he
had these loose bodies in his elbow and he chose
not to get him out, and you know, rest and
rehab really worked for him at first, and he came
back with ninety seven five in his first game. You know,
it started to dwindle more than ninety six ninety six,
and then the last three games ninety five five zero,
ninety five six. Now that's still slightly slightly above average lossy.

(01:04:08):
I can't believe we've gotten to this point. But for
a right hand or that is slightly above average velocity
for a starter. So it's it's not like doom and gloom,
but I could see like it's possible. I'm not going
to speak for him, but it's possible. But those you know,
Trevor May on the podcast now on Rais and Beryls
today was talking about how loose spies and the elbow

(01:04:31):
are kind of like a rock in the shoe and like,
you know, you might be walking for a while and
they're in a part where it doesn't hurt, and then
you know, you stug yourtail or something happens and then
it just it goes right in the middle of your
foot and you're just like ah, So, like you know,
those things move around, and it's possible that they're becoming
more painful. So you know, that's affected not only his vlow,

(01:04:54):
but his command in the last last few games has
been down from a really excellent top. But I think
he'll be fine. Maybe they just need to go to
the true six man to give everybody those extra days.
And I continue to think that like Brian Woo just
needs to maybe you know, pitch two more strikeouts, throw
more breaking balls on the road then he then he

(01:05:16):
does at home, just to kind of be cognizant of
this big split he has. I know that sounds simple,
and I wonder I would love to hear what who
thinks of a bad idea?

Speaker 2 (01:05:28):
The you know, let's go back to Miller for a second,
because yeah, the loose bodies. I love this, like loose
bodies or whatever my in my elbow, Like it's like
there's a body flow, but it's yeah, he's got the
little whatever, the chips and stuff like that. I think
that I think that that's a great analogy though with
the shoe and feeling a little pebble in your shoe
at times, I bring that up for this reason. I'm
looking around and thinking, Okay, well for for Wu or

(01:05:50):
I mean for Miller, do you think so it's one day,
which I guess the shoe analogy makes sense, like maybe
that it moves enough where that one day makes a difference.
Is there a reason at all to be concerned like that, Like, hey,
like this could crop up to be a point of
if we're seeing the diminished velocity, and could this creep
up to be a problem for them?

Speaker 3 (01:06:11):
Yeah, I mean, yes, it's a if you look around
the people that have chosen not to take it out,
not to take those loose bodies out, you know a
lot of them have eventually taken it out. So Edwin
Diaz had loose spies in his elbow and then you
know it was just pitching terribly at the beginning of
the season, and was like, yeah, it just hurts.

Speaker 1 (01:06:31):
You know.

Speaker 3 (01:06:32):
Hunter Green apparently had the loose spodies in his elbow
through the Pennant Race last year for the Reds, pitched
through some pain, you know, through the end of the season,
thought that rest and rehab over the offseason would work.
Got into spring, was like, no, I still feel it
still hurts. So and then he went under the surgery
and just came back a couple of weeks ago. So

(01:06:53):
it seems to me like something where you know, the
doctor says it's a pain talents thing, it's not gonna
make it worse. Who is not to have the surgery?
And generally you want to avoid surgeries because surgery itself,
you know, has a has a recovery component, right, like
it may not work and your body you you you've
we've cut into the body, so the body has to

(01:07:14):
heal around that incision. So generally I get why people
avoid surgery, But it seems to me a little bit
of a matter of when, not if, When when you've
got this thing that's that's hurting you, that's that's flowing around.

Speaker 2 (01:07:26):
Yeah, I think it's maybe that's why you keep Louise
Castiel and maybe that's why you have the six man rotation,
because they've been knocked out. What about the young guys,
you guys, I thought you were going to say that
the four letter word up here that's called piggyback. But no,
I'm glad you didn't do that either. But yeah, no,

(01:07:48):
like we're rying sloaning. That's I mean, that's a fun
thing though, because like we're all excited about these That's
the great thing about prospects, right, You're always excited aout him.
You want to see him up here. It's it's the
backup quarterback syndrome for seams, right, Like you want to
see the backup quarterback until you don't want to see
the backup quarterback. I take it back, yet, I'm not

(01:08:11):
sure if I want to see the backup quarterback right now.
I don't want to see that guy a reason he's
the backup. But you know what I mean, look thing,
go ahead.

Speaker 3 (01:08:20):
Sorry. One thing that occurred to me about these Mariners though,
that I hadn't really noticed, was they've not been good defensively.
Their numbers, their numbers for the year are bottom two,
bottom five, depending on where you look. And that is
an interesting thing when you think about them trying to
acquire right handed bat like, it doesn't. It's not only

(01:08:40):
a right handed bat that they want, it's a right
handed bat that helps them defensively at least an upgrade somewhere.
Now they've done some things like moving Crawford a third,
so that mean that theoretically he's a better defender there
than he's a short. Cult's been sort of neutral, which
is a positive at least compared to where Crawford had been.

(01:09:01):
Young is actually playing pretty well by the metrics defensively,
so you know, but the problem is that like, oh, well,
what about the right handed bad being like Roblest playing
him in center over over Rodrick, like moving Julio off
of But then when you move Julio off then you're
count You're you're cutting Luke Raley out of the out

(01:09:23):
of the lineup, which he's been mostly a positive with
the bat. So there's a little bit of a crowd
happening where you're like, oh, do we do we focus
on the defense or do we focus on the offense?
And how do we clean this up a little bit?
And what and how was Brandon Donovan Fitt into all this?

Speaker 2 (01:09:37):
Well, is he ever going to be healthy be the question, right,
I mean, that's these these sounds like maybe they'll activate
them this weekend, I would say, And is that right?
They may bring him back. He play right now, so yeah,
he went he was an Everett and now he's now
he's in Tacoma, so maybe they'll activate him this weekend.
Who knows. I mean, I just don't think he can
count on that guy to be healthy.

Speaker 9 (01:09:53):
He hasn't been healthy question as well. He's been scratched
from his last start in Tacoma. So all we well,
there you gory Michael Royal, I get yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:10:02):
Michael Royal. Yeah see you know you want to prospect
Michael o'royal may be coming up. Huh there you go.

Speaker 3 (01:10:08):
Well yeah, you know, uh, Brandon Donvan's uh defensively, uh
for his career has been better on the infield. So
that's a that's a that's an interesting thing to think
about too, Like he hasn't been the best out their
can zone is just not is not not a good outfielder.

Speaker 2 (01:10:28):
Not great, right Andrews not?

Speaker 9 (01:10:30):
No, Yeah, he's best as a d H, which the
Mariners have like six of those players.

Speaker 5 (01:10:33):
So yeah, well.

Speaker 2 (01:10:38):
You can't take that bad out you can't take You
can't take ken zones.

Speaker 10 (01:10:42):
Out of the lineup.

Speaker 3 (01:10:44):
Those two homers against the Dodgers against lefty. You can't
even maybe take him out of the lineup on left
he day.

Speaker 2 (01:10:52):
I know people are losing their mind after that. Oh see,
the analytics don't make sense. You should have been hitting
the lefties all the time. Blah blaver. They put them
back in fine. I got to ask you about cal
Rawly again. He hits the home run the other night,
We're all excited. It's like, you know, one home run
every two weeks, and we think maybe he started around
and he drops another zero for three last night. Is
there a legitimate concern? Is is this just who we're

(01:11:15):
gonna live with the rest of the season. Is there
any indication this guy could get on a tear?

Speaker 3 (01:11:22):
Yeah? I mean I've talked a little bit about, you know,
his contact point and howe you know, he's way out
in front and that can be finicky. That's one point.
A point in his favor in terms of figuring it out,
is that you know, people look at you know, walk
rate and strikeout rate to do play discipline, but I
prefer looking at how often you swing at balls? And

(01:11:45):
how often you swing at strikes, and the difference between
those two numbers is remarkably remarkably tight and similar year
to year, and for his career it's been basically forty
percent every year, and forty percent is near elead this year,
it is not this year, it's around thirty percent. And

(01:12:07):
I went and looked at players that were similar. I
was doing it for Vladimir Gerw Junior because he's also
really struggling, and I found that it was basically something
like sixty two out of seventy players that had this
kind of a first half where their their plate discipline
was that wonky reverted to their regular plate discipline in

(01:12:29):
the second half. So this is a really powerful thing
right now. I would say he just needs to be
a little bit more aggressive in the zone. If he
focuses on that, I think things will kind of come
into and coming to focus for him. He just did
not swing it pitches in the zone and he's swinging
pitches outside the zone. But it's it's something that should correct.

(01:12:50):
It's something that's, like I would say, is innate to
a player. I think you can do very little to
affect that, and it has a lot to do with
your outcomes, because you think about it, you hit the
ball that's outside the own. Your outcomes are not.

Speaker 2 (01:13:02):
That great, makes sense?

Speaker 3 (01:13:05):
You walk or you you you you strike out or
you you hit a poor, poor they head ball.

Speaker 2 (01:13:09):
You know, final thing for you? Why can't Houston go away?
What's what's what? Why are they bothering us here?

Speaker 9 (01:13:15):
I've tried to do it three years where I said
this is the year they die, and they never did.

Speaker 2 (01:13:19):
Yeah, this is what we thought, like a month ago,
I could. Why won't they go away? You know? What
the hell's going on here?

Speaker 3 (01:13:24):
Peter Lambert, Renel Blanco, You know, like they just they
always have like some picture that shows up and you're like,
you shouldn't be this good?

Speaker 2 (01:13:33):
What is going on?

Speaker 4 (01:13:36):
God?

Speaker 3 (01:13:36):
I think I do. Still, I'm still sticking by my
guns that that like every year it's not quite as
good as the year before.

Speaker 2 (01:13:44):
Yeah, they've creeped up back to five hundred. They've won
three in a row. I mean they're they're they got Texas,
uh coming up next, that's tomorrow, So they've got a
day off tonight them have a chance to gain a
half game on both those teams. You know, tell us
about rat and Barrels podcast is terrific for all our
baseball fans out there.

Speaker 3 (01:13:59):
It's really fun. We do like player breakdowns, we do,
you know, strategy breakdowns. We talked about trying to find
the statistical value of hit tool this week, and H
and we and we delve into these these playoff races
all the time. So we will be talking about the
best playoff race of the best divisional race in baseball,
the American League West.

Speaker 2 (01:14:22):
Also known as a pillow fight. But yes, let's go.

Speaker 4 (01:14:25):
Yeah, also known as a pillow fight.

Speaker 2 (01:14:30):
So that's what it is, you know, Grace, Steph. We'll
talk to next week. Thank you, my friend, thank you.
You know. Sarah's bought to by Georgetown Brewing. Go check
it out, look for your grocery stores or of course
down at the brewery itself. Will wrap up our number
two coming up.

Speaker 1 (01:14:44):
Next Now back to Ian Ferness at the Virginia Mason
Athletics Center and our special coverage of Seahawks training camp,
brought to you by The Blowing Classic on Sports three
kJ R them.

Speaker 2 (01:15:02):
When we're back at the Virginia Mason Athletics Center, shores
of Lake Washington, Seahawks headquarters, home of the defending Super
Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks practice early today. No fans done
and over with by about eleven fifty five am, and
then back at it tomorrow. Fans will be here tomorrow,

(01:15:24):
will of course be here tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (01:15:25):
We're here every day.

Speaker 2 (01:15:27):
I'll be here at least. Don't know about aybody else
I should say I'll be here. I can't keep it.
I can't keep track of what other people do. And
I'll know I know this. I will be here tomorrow
starting at noon. I'm gonna guess Greg Bell is here.
Not sure about everybody else, but we'll be here all right.
The we have Mike McDonald on earlier. We'll have that
podcast up there. I don't know if it's up there
yet or we'll be soon. If it is, wait till

(01:15:48):
after the show.

Speaker 5 (01:15:48):
Right after the show today, we'll be up yet.

Speaker 2 (01:15:50):
Thank you see and or thank you care about the
show on the five. I do appreciate you for that.
We'll have that. We'll probably replay it tomorrow at some
point for people that missed. And Mike McDonald joined us
in the new he was great, just a lot of
big picture conversations and you know, I just he's It's
an interesting guy in the sense that when he first
got here, the answers were short, and you know, they

(01:16:12):
were never terseed.

Speaker 9 (01:16:12):
But I was gonna mention that Ian I comparing his
interview on the first day he got hired, or at
least the first day that he was available to the
media to this one is a lot different to me, it, you.

Speaker 2 (01:16:22):
Know, I I he did he did the podium the
first day. And after he did the podium we were
here January February day whatever that was. And in twenty
twenty four, and afterwards I went he came into our
little side room here that we do a lot of
interviews in that we were set up in at the
Virginia Mason Athletics Center. He came in and he talked,

(01:16:44):
and he and I did a one on one interview
for fifteen twenty minutes, and it was it was good,
Like it was. I enjoyed the conversation, you know, I mean,
I'd never talked to him, He'd never talk to me
or anybody else in the Seattle media for that matter.
And and you know, we had heard from people in
Baltimore that's like, hey, like media guys in Baltimore. The
big thing. Oh you know, you're not gonna get much

(01:17:04):
out of this guy. He didn't let you know, he
doesn't talk much. He didn't say much. And he was
good that day. He was solid. He's but he's a
little buttoned down. The evolution of Mike McDonald. And we
didn't have a chance to get into everything with him.
But and he talked about this the first day of
camp this year, last last Saturday when I was out here,
he was he he was talking about, you know, how
much he's changed. And part of how he's changed and

(01:17:26):
evolved a little bit is he's the personality is coming
out a lot more like you see, a lot more personality.
You see like he's he has fun. He'll bust guy's
balls a little bit, like to Greg the other day,
you know, when Greg's pressing him on even Warry, asking
him five different ways if eman or he's gonna be
ready for the home opener or for the opening game,
and to McDonald's credit, like, you know, well, here's how

(01:17:50):
not to do a press conference. Just go look at
anything that the the I think now former police chief
in Seattle, Sean Barnes gone, anything he did, or frankly
the mayor just anything that's not how do you do
a press conference in fact, try to you know, what's
the old saying, you get a lot more a lot
more sugar than spice or whatever the hell it is,
honey than honey than whatever. Yeah, Like like McDonald had,

(01:18:14):
like he could have easily said to Greg, Greg, I've
answered that twice. I'm done. Instead, Greg tried, did a
great job, that's what a journalist does, and McDonald was
having none of it, but having fun with it. He
wouldn't have been that way a couple of years ago. Total,
he's just he's just grown. I think he's so much
more comfortable now. Listen, he can downplay the super Bowl
when all he wants, and he did with with you
and I. At the end of the day, he knows

(01:18:38):
whether it's just a thing that's now part of your DNA,
whether it's something that just kind of is in your subconscious.
He knows he is a Super Bowl champion coaching. So
you that gives you juice, Yeah, it's him.

Speaker 9 (01:18:55):
It's like, Hey, I've justified being hired to this job
at this.

Speaker 2 (01:19:00):
It is not a flex, right, it's not a flex
it's just but it's it's part of who he is
now that's and that's that's a real thing. It's a
part of who he is, and who he is is
a super Bowl winning coach. It's that simple. And he
he he had He's always been a confident guy. I
see just a different, more outgoing guy. And you know
he's got the pressure of the world on him. I
I think that's the thing that's amazing to me, because

(01:19:22):
all he cares about is winning the next one. Like
that's and and that's a lot like you think about it.
I mean, they teams don't go back to back that often.
There's a reason the NFL sets it up when they don't.
And everyone the Seahawks are not the favorite to go
back to back. They're not the favorite to win their division.
That would be the LA Rams. So there is some pressure,
but there's also an under underdog mentality.

Speaker 3 (01:19:43):
But I.

Speaker 2 (01:19:45):
But we did not care. No, they did not. But
that's I've told people all along. I've told you this
since I've been out here and even going back to
mini camp. You know, everyone's raving about the Rams and
that line right there is how that's what permeates this
building true, And I think that's a great thing.

Speaker 5 (01:20:05):
It's not just talk right this, Like there's so much.

Speaker 2 (01:20:08):
Worry and consternation over the fact there's new ownership coming in,
like ideally, really, as a fan, all you care about
is the football team, right, Like I care about I
care about the people that work here because I know
a lot of them. I've known a lot of them
for a lot of years. The people that you don't see,
whether it's the PR staff, the corporate sales staff, the

(01:20:29):
partnership staff, the ticket staff. I mean, I know a
lot of those people and have known them well because
we were with each other for many many years every week,
So those are the people I care about. But if
you're a fan sitting home, all you care about is
what goes on between the lines. And what goes on
between the lines. Man, Yes, they've got question marks at
running back. Maybe they've got questions like every team does.

(01:20:51):
But man, you got to feel good if you're a
Seahawk fan knowing that that dude and John schneiderre in
charge and are so from the foreseeable future, Like this
thing is in such good shape, whether they went it
back to back or not. I mean, who knows, right,
and so much can happen between injuries and whatever. There's
always a team that jumps up out of nowhere, right like,

(01:21:12):
there's always that team that all of a sudden turn
right turned it, and so who knows what goes on,
but I just I sit across from that guy. I
watched John Schneider out there on the practice field and
the comment he has for this organization, how comfortable he
is in his role all these years later. He's a
flipping Hall of Famer. These guys are in really good
shape for years to come. I mean, if you're a

(01:21:32):
Seattle Seahawk football fan, you're living in a golden era
right now. And we had that before, but it was
short lived. It kind of came and went pretty damn quick,
you know, twelve thirteen, fourteen fifteen, it started to diminish
and it went downhill pretty quick after that. We're at
the very start of this thing right now. And I
think because of the way they've structured contracts, because of

(01:21:53):
the personality of the team, there's a little bit of
a selflessness attitude here as well. I think this is
truly the start of something really fun for the next
few years. We'll take a break, come back. Corman Smith
joins us.

Speaker 1 (01:22:05):
Next now from the Star Rentals Sports to us Jordan
ninety three point three KJRFMS sports headlines.

Speaker 2 (01:22:14):
Brought to by Frostbrow cors like chews chill ems. With
the second game the series, the Dodgers four to two games,
three to night Rode Brian Wu. That's always fine against
Roki Sasaki tonight, who's got the advantage pitching wise? Night Anders.

Speaker 9 (01:22:24):
I mean, if Brian Wu can find a way to
be anything close to himself at home, I think we do.

Speaker 5 (01:22:29):
But who knows when that will happen?

Speaker 2 (01:22:31):
Maybe tonight, maybe tonight. WNBAS and spending Sandlestorm co owner
Celeste Keaton from attending the team's next five home games
after exchange with two fans drink Tuesday's matchup at the
Indiana Fever, Get your blank together, WNBA, Please, you're embarrassing
yourself on every level, from ownership down to players. My goodness.

(01:22:54):
Baker Mayfield in the NFL said he feels disrespected a
little bit after he and the team can not come
in an agreement before or on a new contract before.
It's a post deadline that started training camp. Tony Rommel
had an open container of alcohol in his vehicle when
he stopped by police last week, later rested on suspicion
of driving into the influence not only a hammer, but
you're drinking while you're driving with an open container. I mean, listen,

(01:23:18):
the days of having road pops in college those end
in the eighties, buddy, Like, I don't know what you're doing.
What with CBS next to that? I know this. Two
places I work with would be fired up about that. Nope,
let's get to our number three.

Speaker 1 (01:23:34):
It's time to take a deep dive into all things
Seahawks with Corbyn Smith, sports reporter for Emerald City Spectrum.
All Seattle Sports, all the time, brought to you by
Jim Elliott with Windemere Real Estate, helping home buyers and
home sellers in Western Washington. Whether you're buying or selling,
contact Jim at two O six seven six nine five
four six six or at gym at sold by Jim

(01:23:56):
dot com.

Speaker 2 (01:23:57):
Now with Corbyn Smith, here's ian all right. We are
here and I say we literally we Corbyn and me.
That's it.

Speaker 10 (01:24:06):
There's not much else going on here though.

Speaker 2 (01:24:08):
It's it's this is it, man, This is it. The
last two men standing, the grounds crews out there working
on the field. I need to bring Greg out there
and show them all the dirt spots from just practice
and ask him again if it makes sense to have
grass fields at living But that's fine. We are getting
ready for practice tomorrow. But we're done early today because
they practiced at nine forty five to eleven fifty five

(01:24:30):
this morning, first practice in pads. Here the Virginia Mason
Athletics Center got a think about this, Corbett. A week ago,
we were still doing our previews on the radio. You
were doing previews and player rankings on Emerald City Spectrum,
and man, here we are six days later. We're well
into training camp. Man, the grind is underway. Huh. It'll
be week one before you know it. It's it's crazy,

(01:24:51):
all right. Today was day one in Pats holiday.

Speaker 10 (01:24:58):
So what you learned, well, it was it's always interested
the first day of pads to see how the guys
in the trenches respond because this is really the first
chance for the offensive a defensive lineman to show what
they can do. I mean, let's be honest, OTA's in
mini camp. There's just there's not much you can glean
from that for offensive and defensive lineman. You can look
at athleticism things like that, but you want to see

(01:25:21):
these guys get their hands on somebody across the line
of scrimmage, and you want to see who's going to
be the better man. I'll tell you what the most
impressive thing that I saw all day today one on ones,
which is still my favorite thing at training camp. One
on one's offensive defensive linemen. They usually do two reps
with a set of players. You don't see a third

(01:25:41):
rep very often a best of three, but we had
one today Anthony Bradford against Riley Mills, and every single
one of those reps, all three of them were tightly
contested down to the wire, physical who's gonna be the
better man type battles, and that's why John on Ben's like,
we gotta have another one. We gotta have round three.

(01:26:02):
And Riley Mills got the last laugh there, but man
Bradford fought him.

Speaker 2 (01:26:07):
It was second one.

Speaker 10 (01:26:08):
Mills spun away and it looked like he was gonna
get right into the backfield and Bradford did a phenomenal
job recovering and getting back and stopping him. It was
just every reporter over there was just like WHOA Like
this was pot get your popcorn ready. One on ones.

Speaker 2 (01:26:22):
Seahawk fans just just settle in because Bradford's your right guard.
I'm just gonna, like, I know, we're not supposed to
talk about depth charts and rotations. I'm just I don't
think we're I.

Speaker 10 (01:26:30):
Don't think they care about that one because it's he's
he's the guy.

Speaker 2 (01:26:33):
He's the guy. Like there's like everyone, you know, the
push to push to push to get this guy out
of that right guard position. It's not happening. It's just
not it's not gonna happen. And you know, you know what,
credit Anthony Bradford for that. Like he's not allowing it
to happen. There's no Bo Stevens, there's no Christian Haynes
that's gonna push this dude. Mason Richmond doesn't matter, Cable

(01:26:54):
D And I'm like, this is this is the right
guard and I kind of like it from this standpoint.
That's good. Then this guy's worked on his game, he
worked on his craft in the offseason. Good for him.

Speaker 10 (01:27:05):
Mike McDonald I asked him about Bradford today after practice,
and the thing that he said, what you can account
for with him is work ethic and attitude.

Speaker 4 (01:27:15):
And I think you know, when you look at.

Speaker 10 (01:27:16):
The early part of his career, there were some murmurs about,
you know, does this guy have the work ethic? He
has got it now and the work he did with
Duke many Weather, who I think might be the best
offensive line coach out there that these guys can work with.
He worked within this offseason and you can tell, you
can see it. And they've got these stones out here,
like there's probably a ton way a ton of piece.

(01:27:38):
Like I thought he was gonna pick one of those
up off the ground with a sled yesterday, days ago.

Speaker 2 (01:27:44):
The way it is, it just is, it's just different,
all right. So pads go on as well. It's the
first opportunity to see the running backs with pads on,
and there's no true tackling, but there is contact and
you do have an ability to see a little bit
more of Hey, was there a hole there? Did the

(01:28:05):
guy hit the read? Did he see it correctly? How's
his vision? And everything to hear about Jadari and Price
is those are his strengths, right, the vision and you know,
the ability to find that hole and all those things.
What do we see from the first round draft pick.

Speaker 10 (01:28:18):
He didn't have a lot to work with today when
when he got his carries, there was a couple of
times where we made some nice reads to cut and
bounce outside and took advantage of not having contained from
the defense. He also got popped a few times, which
is gonna happen, and look, it's good for the running
backs to have that happen. They got to get ready
for the season. But Manuel Wilson had a couple of
big runs today that got opened up with some road

(01:28:41):
room in front of him.

Speaker 2 (01:28:42):
We got to see is that against the twos?

Speaker 10 (01:28:44):
Then those I think all of them were against the twos,
and Jaccardi Wright had a couple of nice runs, and look,
Jaccardi Wright is a guy that just shows up. He
just does and I'm eager to see him in the
preseason games again.

Speaker 2 (01:28:58):
But we didn't get to.

Speaker 10 (01:28:59):
See a lot in terms of space to run today.
The defense had something to say about that. But we
did get to see the running backs catch a bunch
of passes again, and that just continues to be the
trend we're seeing here early in camp. And it's not
just dump offs, like, it's not just oh, nobody's getting
open downfield, like there is a clear purpose to getting
the football into the running backs hands in the passing game.

Speaker 2 (01:29:21):
Jacardi writes, an interesting cat, isn't he Mike. We've talked
about him a lot. I I he's a Mike McDonald guy.
He really is, right, that's I think that's I think
that's what it is. I think that's I think that's
a good way to put it. He's a Mike McDonald guy.
No nonsense. I'm gonna go do what I need to do.
I'm gonna I'm gonna work hard at every facet of

(01:29:43):
my game. He's selfless, Like.

Speaker 10 (01:29:46):
I just think this team that that's what they've had
so much success. Like these guys are bought in, they
are unified in the like Anthony Bradford, Like, there's a
selflessness to it, like I'm gonna go do what I
gotta do. And I think Mike McDonald done such a
good job of instilling that in this team.

Speaker 2 (01:30:03):
The yeah, well that we talked to, we had Mike
on earlier and you know the whole how connected these
guys are. You know what he raved about, which is interesting.
You were he talked about his first the first practice.
Guys were asking all the injuries, and Zach Charbonney's name
got brought up and he talked about Charbonay on McDonald
did on Saturday. I asked him about it today when
he sat where you're sitting here a couple hours ago,

(01:30:25):
and you know, I said, like, because he was just
effusive in his praise for charbon Ay, the person, the leader,
what he means to this football team, you know, not
even carrying the football, just in the locker room, everything else.
And I was like, man, every time we talked to Scharbony,
very very quiet. I don't want to say reserve, but
doesn't have a lot to say, not boisterous, not a

(01:30:48):
guy that's you know, you think of as a raw,
raw here we go, in your face type of dude.
And he talked about his spirit and all those things.
We askedim about it today and he goes, yeah, this guy,
he goes, I've watched him in the locker room, like
when things he's his best when they aren't going well,
Like he's walking around talking to guys and talking to
individuals and doing all these things. It's one of those
reasons you're like, I wish Kenneth Walker was here. I

(01:31:09):
just think, as as I want to see these guys
play well, and I think he gives you a chance
to be a better football team. Kenneth Walker does fourteen
million dollars. That's a John Schneider decision. They make that
call and move on. But listening to McDonald talk about
Zach Sharba, I understand now why they like Sharbonay. Like
what he brings the table, that a little intangible and
stuff like that.

Speaker 10 (01:31:27):
And you know he talks with his pads too, like
he's a lead by example kind of guy.

Speaker 2 (01:31:31):
Yeah, well, yeah, how when you kind of just look
through that room. Jadarian Price won Halani's in the mix,
especially because the third down and blocking.

Speaker 10 (01:31:42):
I tell you what the past protection drills today.

Speaker 2 (01:31:45):
And it's funny.

Speaker 10 (01:31:45):
You got to hear Ernest Jones like I want to
go up against the best.

Speaker 2 (01:31:48):
He said that, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 10 (01:31:50):
And so it was Ernest Jones going up against Hallani
and Halani's. Halani got him the two times they went
against each other. He lost a matchup later off the edge.
You're not going to win all of them, but he
is clearly the best without sharp and amy and healthy,
he is clearly the best pass protecting back.

Speaker 2 (01:32:06):
And we saw it in the Super Bowl with him
picking up blitzes. What do you think Wilson's role is
going to be or will there be a role? Right now?

Speaker 10 (01:32:13):
I would say it's as I've been saying really since
they signed him. I'd expect that he's going to be
the short yard age guy. I think that's where he's
going to fit in. I think Jacardia Wright is going
to give him a run for his money right now, though.
I think there's a little bit of a competition going
on there with those two guys for that third spot
in the running back depth chart. And you're wondering, if
you know Jakarti Wright them, Yeah, and a man who

(01:32:37):
Wilson and I talked to him today Green Bay. They
didn't ask their running backs to catch the ball very much.
That was not so he's had to make some adjustments
to that and he says he can do it obviously,
but uh, he's going through some adjustment periods in this
offense as well. Jakarti Wright caught a bunch of passes
in college, So I you know, I think Emanuel Wilson's
going to be the three guy. But I'm telling you

(01:32:58):
right now that you know that could be competition is
starting to brew there a little bit.

Speaker 2 (01:33:02):
I do the defense kind of win the day today. Yeah,
this felt like it was interesting.

Speaker 10 (01:33:09):
I don't remember anybody scoring a touchdown today, but I
think a lot of that was by you know, they
didn't do any red zone work today. There was a
lot of situational stuff in the middle of the field
or long field yet some of the one on ones.
There was a lot of individual and position group drills,
which is typical for a first pad of day as well.

Speaker 2 (01:33:28):
Corbus Spitz joining as Ceneral City Spectrum Emerald City Spectrum
dot Com. I talked to Anthony Bell. We played that
interview yesterday. What a delight. I mean, Oh, he's fantastic,
what a great story and everything else. How important is
he this football team?

Speaker 10 (01:33:43):
I think he's another guy like they you know, they
obviously won the Super Bowl without him, but like that
felt like one of those spirit losses when he got
picked up off, you know, and it's unfortunate that the
Seahawks got in that position where they had to. You know,
there are some really good players that kind of are
that fringe that you know, come on and off the roster,
and he's he fell into that line in part because

(01:34:04):
all the safety talent does the Seahawks have, but he's
he is another guy that you just look at the story,
guys rally around players like that, and I do need
to look at Emmanuel Wilson. I mean he played in
two D Dude schools, Like he's another guy that kind
of fits that Mike McDonald's mentality, Like I had adversity,
but look at me.

Speaker 2 (01:34:23):
I got to the NFL. Yeah, as a high school coach,
a student assistant, not even a grad assistant, a student assistant,
then a graduate assistant. I mean McDonald's. McDonald's road to
the NFL was anything but easy. And I'm sure he
appreciates guys like that too. I always think when it
comes down to those types of things, it's probably you know,
if everything else is a tie, that might be the tiebreaker,

(01:34:45):
right like like whether it be character of the story
where he came from a little little extra hunger or whatever,
that might be the tiebreaker along the way. Quarterback wise,
we know what's going on there. Anything jump out at
you today with those guys, Yeah, you know.

Speaker 10 (01:34:58):
Today was a tougher day to have evaluate that again
just because of the situation they had. Like Jalen Milroe
really jumped out in the practice on Tuesday. About him, Yeah,
that was the best I've seen him look for an
entire practice today. There were a handful of throws. Sam
Darnold had a really nice throw to Cooper Cup. I
will say this right.

Speaker 2 (01:35:18):
Now, going on a tangent, let's talk about Cooper Cup.
So be shocked.

Speaker 10 (01:35:23):
Cooper Cup looks like he was. I think he was
good last year. He just didn't get a lot of opportunities.
I don't think he's lost that much of a step.
I think he's still a very effective player. I think
this iteration of the Shanahan offense, he's gonna cater more
to what he does. I would not be shocked. Don't
be shocked if he goes out and catches sixty or

(01:35:43):
seventy balls.

Speaker 7 (01:35:44):
Ye.

Speaker 2 (01:35:44):
Mike Benton asked me earlier. He's doing a thing for
for I don't know if it's our website or something
like that, but he we were doing a little quick,
little video hit and he said, does Sam Donald throw
for more yards than last year? Yes or no? And
I said, I said, I'm gonna say yes. I'm gonna
say yes. For a couple of weears. One is the
fact that they don't have Ken Walker, so probably your

(01:36:05):
lead running backs to rookie and it's might take a
little bit of time and Charbonay's out, Like so you're
one and two from last year aren't here, So you're
making change in the running back position. I know you
want to run the football and all those things. And
Jennarian Price could be a he could be really good,
who knows. But on top of that, I think he
throws from more yards for two reasons. As of right now,

(01:36:27):
Tory Horton is healthy. As of right now, Rashidi, he's
more part of the offense. And as of right now,
Cooper Cup as you just said, looks sprys. He a
spry right he Yeah.

Speaker 10 (01:36:39):
I thought he had a good camp last year, but
it's just something is different this year, like it. And
we see that sometimes with veteran players that like are
in their tenth eleventh year, where this.

Speaker 2 (01:36:49):
Guy wants another ring. Yeah, he wants another ring. His
legacy is secure, he's going to the Hall of Fame,
but he wants another ring. He wants another ring.

Speaker 10 (01:36:58):
Yeah, and he is really happy being back in his
home state. Like I think he he's in his element.
But I think this offense, he made a hell of
a catch today where he was looking like he was
blocking and sold it and then came across the middle
there was no defender within fifteen yards of him and
picked up big yardage. I just I think he's such

(01:37:18):
a savvy player in this offense fits him so well.

Speaker 2 (01:37:21):
Do you watch him ever and just go wow, Like
just the little things that he does and things that
he does, or how he sees the game he talked
about he talked to the podium in the day about
you know, being a leader kind of coach on the field,
things like that.

Speaker 10 (01:37:33):
I think it depends on what he wants to do,
but I think he has a future as an offensive
coordinator in this league. I think Cooper cup could be
a really good offensive coordinator.

Speaker 4 (01:37:42):
He is a die hard. He is one of my
favorite interviews for that reason.

Speaker 10 (01:37:46):
You know how I am with X to Know's He's
one of the guys that really opens up on that
stuff and I love it. I just think he and
maybe my favorite thing about him is his blocking, like
as a as a film nerd, Like when I turn
on the film and it used to be he's watching
with the rams, Like, look, I know he's not in
the Seahawks, but like, good God, look at this block
that he's just made it to the outside. Like he
has been one of the best, if not the best

(01:38:07):
run blockers as a receiver in the league for a decade.
And again it's a Mike McDonald guy. He does all
the little things right, He's a detail oriented guy.

Speaker 2 (01:38:17):
Yeah, if you're any of those receivers, you're not blocking,
you're not gonna be here, like.

Speaker 10 (01:38:20):
Especially with I think with Brian Flurry, it's even more so, like, uh,
which is why you know Jake Bobo's banged up right now,
But I think Jake Bobo's got a chance to do
some things to this offense.

Speaker 2 (01:38:31):
Well what do you see from the Flurry offense that
jumps out?

Speaker 10 (01:38:34):
Well, the first thing is the running backs, Like, and
this is crazy, Seattle was thirty first in targets to
running backs in the passing game last year. Like it
just was like it was not a part of their
passing game most of the year. You've been watching some
of the practice out here, like they are force feeding
jennari in Price and George Hallani and Jacarti. You're right,
like those guys are getting a lot of touches and

(01:38:54):
it doesn't feel like I said they're force feeding him,
but it doesn't. It's really not that.

Speaker 2 (01:38:59):
I think. I think according to that cap, we've had
that conversation a little bit with with with with that
part of the game, and it's like, I think we
saw that a little bit in mini camp in June,
and then we've seen it, you know through the first
what are we won? Two four five practices in uh boy,
they're throwing the this is this is the the everyone's

(01:39:20):
standing on the sideline watching together and like, yeah, they're
throwing a lot of balls. Their force being they're trying
to see if Jordari and Price can catch it. I
don't think that's what it is.

Speaker 10 (01:39:26):
I think it's I think that's what this offense is
gonna think San Francisco was first.

Speaker 2 (01:39:30):
That's it. That's it. It's not testing the rookie. It's
this is what we're gonna do.

Speaker 10 (01:39:34):
And and I think, you know, and Leonard Williams, Leonard
Williams is the other one that when we interview him,
me being the nerd that I am, like he's another
one that he starts talking about pre snap motion and
how it changes gap responsibilities and like I just I'm
just on cloud nine but he was talking about the
there's more motion from full backs, which that's the other thing.

(01:39:54):
You're gonna see more of the two back personnel in
this offense, even than what Kubiak did last year. Less
of the thirteen with three tight ends, and you're gonna
see more of the two running backs in the field.
Robbie Ootz and Brady Russell are both gonna play snatch
there and they're gonnam And you motion a guy out
of the out of the fullback into the into the
tight end spot like you just created another gap and

(01:40:17):
it creates all kinds of problems for most defenses in
the NFL. What are you write now, Well, that's gonna
be one of the things I'm gonna be writing on
the running back situation. As far as in the passing game,
I thought Sam Darnold gave a really nice, insightful answer
on that today And and like he said, he gotta
hit it at like this is not this is not
like we're just throwing it to him just to throw
it to him. Like this is gonna be a much

(01:40:39):
bigger part of their offense this year, and it could
open up some of that stuff behind. If you're worried
about Yeah, jadariing Price could kill us out there on
the outside, or George Hallani who can run from the slot, Like, oh,
what are we gonna do if he starts hurting us?
You have to start sucking guys up. So I'm gonna
be writing a lengthy piece about that and some other takeaways.

Speaker 2 (01:40:58):
You know what, Swallas, I just kept thinking, you bring
it in a former tight ends coaches, your offensive coordinator.
I just thought that the natural thought would be they're
gonna throw the tight ends more.

Speaker 10 (01:41:06):
I don't know that that's what I mean. They might
get a few more targets. I mean, Elijah Royals looks
pretty good here this first week, and so maybe he's
the one that benefits a lot from that. But but
I think you're seeing more like Kyle Shanahan loves throwing
to his running backs. Christian McCaffrey is a huge part
of that. But even when McCaffrey was banged up, they
were still throwing the ball out to their running backs.
I think Brian Fleury's he subscribes more to that than

(01:41:28):
what Clint Kobiak did.

Speaker 2 (01:41:31):
Robbie Oots is a very big man, more part of
the offense. More snaps this year I mean that we
you know what they do with Kyle Uscheck.

Speaker 10 (01:41:42):
I'm fascinating to see what they do there ian because
Brandy Russell, I'm not saying he's Kyle Ustcheck, right, but
he has the more similar skill set and we've seen
quite a bit of Number thirty eight in the backfield.
I think we're gonna see both of them because they're
both good special teams players too. Think they're both on
this roster. But I'm fascinating to see how that plays

(01:42:04):
out as the year goes, because if if Russell catches
some balls out of the backfield and does some of
the movement stuff, that that could turn into him being
the one that gets more.

Speaker 2 (01:42:13):
Snaps there potentially. I think that's a fascinating one. All right,
Corbus Smith, Emerald City Spectrum. Let's get some subscribers out there.
If you like local journalism that talks about your teams
and whatever team it is here in our state, you've
got it covered. What do we do?

Speaker 10 (01:42:27):
Yeah, we've got We've got Mariner's coverage up today. I
know they're not winning very many games, but still we've
got we've got great Mariner's coverage. We've got some new
crack and stuff that's gonna be up soon. My takeaways
for the Seahawks. I've got an article about Jadavian Cloudy.
It's it's almost August. Every year we talk about the
Seahawks gonna bring him back. I think they are this time.

Speaker 2 (01:42:46):
I do well. There's a tease that we'll see if
it happened.

Speaker 10 (01:42:50):
I mean, I there's a history here Ian. Look at
Noah Igbanoghany, look at Dante Fowler Junior. Those guys were
coveted last year and Seattle didn't get them. They went
back this year and got him. Clowney had maybe his
best year as a pro in Baltimore a few years
ago with Mike McDonald. It all really boils down to
the money and does he want to does he want

(01:43:11):
to play here again? I'm interested to see if that happens, though.

Speaker 2 (01:43:14):
God Clowny back, that'd be crazy. All right, Emerald City
the Spectrum, go subscribe right now today Enermalsonyspectrum dot Com
will take a break, come back with more nine three
point three k DREFM.

Speaker 1 (01:43:27):
Now back to Ian Furness at the Virginia Mason Athletics
Center and our special coverage of Seahawks training camp brought
to you by the Boeing Classic on Sports Radio ninety
three point three kJ r F M.

Speaker 2 (01:43:41):
All right, we're back. Four nine four five one is
come with outch text line four nine four five one.
Let's see five six four area code love Corbin one
smart cookie? You think he left? Can you hear me
say that? Yeah, let's see. Okay, Wow, there's a lot

(01:44:01):
of storm stuff on here. I'm sorry, Shokeian. Yeah, yeah, yeah, uh,
let's see. Yeah. Somebody's telling me that they're in a
debate with my son at the bar at Druids Glenn
about tomato chutney on a turkey sandwich.

Speaker 5 (01:44:20):
Hmmm, very specific.

Speaker 2 (01:44:23):
That is really specific. I don't know if I ever
had tomato chutney. It's an interesting dynamic. Interesting. I'm more
I'm more curious right now than ever been two o
six what it's all about?

Speaker 5 (01:44:35):
Yeah, now I want to know more.

Speaker 10 (01:44:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:44:37):
Yeah, let's let's see you here a lot of them. Okay,
it's crazy how he's become roade Brian Wu and home
Brian Wu. That's what we have to call him now,
says the two os.

Speaker 5 (01:44:51):
And it's like two different pictures, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (01:44:53):
Well, let me see that's thing. It's it's not the
numbers and the splits are insane. It's so this is
this is the night that you go, well, he's gonna
turn it around, right, Yeah, and it gets it like
we keep looking for the little thing, the spark that's
gonna get you some momentum. Now, listen, who has been
he's a say, young candidate. If you just look at

(01:45:13):
his home record, ye, home numbers r yes. So him
turning it around with one road win or run good,
one good road performance. I don't know if that's a
bigger picture thing for the baseball team other than the
fact that okay, now he can I don't know if
I don't know if we're ever going to have that
moment this year where we have the crew like oh wow,
that was the catalyst. Yeah, because every time we think

(01:45:35):
we're gonna every time we think we see it, yeah,
we don't. Right, they just need to start playing better baseball.

Speaker 9 (01:45:41):
I know it's such a general statement to say, and
it's almost as you know, obvious as saying your stars
need to play better, right, but it's just true, like
there's nothing they can do that will make this team,
you know, get to the point where they need to
be just play better, just play better, and everything would
like all of this noise would kind of go away.

(01:46:02):
You go through bad stretches and stuff like that. But yeah,
I don't know. I think also an underrated part you
mentioned Brian Wu kind of being a SI young candidate
at home. What an underrated struggle with the Mariners this year.
Everyone likes to look at their pitching staff, and I
think overall, their numbers look good, but they don't have
a guy. They don't have a guy where if you're
in a bad slump, you're in a bad rut, no

(01:46:22):
matter how poorly your offense is playing you, you're like,
all right, doesn't matter. All we need is one run
and we're gonna get the win today because this guy
is that dominant. He's gonna shut down the other team.
There's no Felix Hernandez in this staff. And I felt
like that could have been the case with the Logan
Gilbert a couple of years ago. That could have been
a case of the Brian Wu last year. None of
those guys have stepped up this year to be that guy.

Speaker 2 (01:46:45):
Yes, correct in regard a lot of people very enjoyed
the Mike McDonald interview, So I thank you for that. Yeah,
I think it was great to have a chance to
sit down and talk to the coach. I was tremendous.
This is from the two six. A couple of buddies
and I won an auction at Seattle's Bourbon Bonanza. Back
to that in a second for a round at Aldera

(01:47:07):
with a member who offered it. Played last month. Parked
the car. We're walking in and coaches right behind us.
I hold the door and say super Bowl Champs first.
He smiled and walked in. He's a big golfer man.
I knew he liked to play. I get he's talking
about he played a lot this year. How god, what
a nightmare. Though many like the Tahoe events, like everyone
there is single digit handicapped. The celebrities are at least right,

(01:47:31):
they're all they're all like really good players, single digit dudes.
So like, you're not ever if you're in that world
of golf, you're not ever worried about topping the drawing.
You might, you might slice it. You can live with that.
If you hammer it, but it slices or or whatever.
You got a little hook, that's okay. Topping it, that's
like your worst fear. Yeah, oh my god, I'd just
be I'd be petrified. I mean, like I get first

(01:47:56):
treat anxiety with like another group waiting with us. Like
even ends right.

Speaker 9 (01:48:02):
Good for Mike for you know, having the whereithal tell
that story. You know, that's so a little humility, doesn't it?

Speaker 6 (01:48:09):
Right?

Speaker 2 (01:48:09):
He also, I've seen his swing.

Speaker 5 (01:48:11):
He's got an elite he can swing it.

Speaker 2 (01:48:14):
He's got an elite swing. And when you add to
that the fact he's never missed arm day, I'm sure
he kills it.

Speaker 5 (01:48:21):
Take spiceps in the league.

Speaker 2 (01:48:23):
I mean, this dude is this dude is yoke easy.

Speaker 5 (01:48:26):
He's very much yoked.

Speaker 2 (01:48:28):
I told my wife Taga, Yeah, we're interviewing Mike McDonald's.
She goes, oh, is he the coach with the big arms.
Then I had to point out to her that he's
also super Bowl champion. You know.

Speaker 5 (01:48:39):
He's like, oh yeah, yeah, okay, that guy, right.

Speaker 2 (01:48:42):
That guy, that guy, that guy. Oh let's see what
else we got four nine four five one.

Speaker 6 (01:48:49):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (01:48:49):
Like Mike said after the super Bowl, valiated his process
and how he ran things. I think it's easier to
just be loose to yourself and you know your process.
Has been successful. Yeah, I think that's part of like
his his nature now. But I don't think he ever
doubted his process, you know, in that sense. I think
he's always had great I don't I want to say

(01:49:10):
it great confidence in that regard and rightfully so he's
done such a terrific you know, but but that's it. Uh, Hey,
what about aar Old Donald coming back and playing for
the Rams? Impact or not?

Speaker 5 (01:49:22):
I mean, you can't say it's not an impact if
that ends up happening.

Speaker 9 (01:49:25):
Right, Yeah, it hasn't happened. I am a little curious
as to why. If it was going to happen, I
feel like it would have happened by now.

Speaker 3 (01:49:31):
Right.

Speaker 2 (01:49:32):
No, No, he's a veteran. You don't want to go
to camp fair. You don't want to go to camp.

Speaker 5 (01:49:36):
Three years out of the league too, Like, I don't know,
you got that kind of get.

Speaker 2 (01:49:39):
At that that dude is going to show up if
he plays, he'll show up whenever, and like he'll he'll
he'll be just.

Speaker 8 (01:49:49):
Ready to go in.

Speaker 2 (01:49:50):
I have my doubts.

Speaker 5 (01:49:52):
What if they get Beata vea two man?

Speaker 2 (01:49:55):
I still how you fit it? Because has got a massive.

Speaker 5 (01:49:57):
They they find ways to make it work every single time.

Speaker 2 (01:50:01):
I know it's going to cost them something though, anders
like it's gonna cost them somebody else. And I don't know,
no idea what their contract situation is with guys that
they could cut.

Speaker 6 (01:50:11):
The night.

Speaker 2 (01:50:13):
The money. Well, here's the thing, like the Pooka deal,
that's a that's a real issue for them. Is like,
that's a real issue for them. And you know, I
go back Lindsay Theory, who covers well, she covers national
stuff now for ESPN, but she's covered the RAM.

Speaker 5 (01:50:28):
He's really good.

Speaker 2 (01:50:29):
Yeah, she's covered the Rams since they moved to LA
And you know, she was always softy. I believe it was.
And she said, point they they may they're they're waiting
to see with this dude, Like I don't know if
they don't know if they I mean really, the the
insinuation is they don't know if they can trust him.
You know, I mean that told you yesterday. Dude's a
freak man, weirdo like fighting women and stuff like. That's
some issues and that would scare me, Like that would

(01:50:52):
scare the daylights out of me, because if you're going
to invest that kind of money, especially you know, the
guaranteed money and whatever else is going to count against
your cap. Even if you did, you know, finds himself
in more hot water, it still hurts you.

Speaker 8 (01:51:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (01:51:03):
Speaking of l a Ian, what is the interaction like
with Benton about Ems and Dodgers and he got bets
for the rubber match? Loser has to kiss Softy Ryan Scottsdale.

Speaker 2 (01:51:12):
No one's gonna kiss Softy. No, I don't know.

Speaker 5 (01:51:18):
He's been offully quiet.

Speaker 2 (01:51:20):
He's been really quiet on our group chat, like really quiet,
like weirdly quiet. Yeah, so I don't there hasn't really
been any I don't.

Speaker 5 (01:51:30):
Know, waiting until they win today and then he's gonna
go balls to the wall.

Speaker 2 (01:51:34):
No, Mikey's smart enough to know that he's we're not
gonna have it, you know, We're just not gonna have
it yet. Sure, so if they if they, if Roade
Brian Wu shows up today, I don't think mike he
will say anything. Quietly Internally up there Instanaholmis County, in
the great City of Everett, where Mikey resides and kind
of runs things up there, He'll be just cheering hard

(01:51:59):
inside for the Dodgers. But I don't think he's I
don't think he's I don't believe. He's been very quiet
and mellowed us so far.

Speaker 5 (01:52:07):
He's not a dancing on the grave type of guy.

Speaker 2 (01:52:10):
No, no, no, although he kind of did that last year.
Not on the grave, but he was dancing around all
happy when they won the World Series last year. Yes,
he did till we all until we all had to
point out that we don't well, we don't care Dodgers win. Yeah,
we did not care. Thank you. That was our that
was our thought on that. He's final one to Marcus

(01:52:32):
asked that I missed the beer release date. No, you
did not soon. I don't know if you missed it.
We've talked about it. It's August twenty first. It's August
twenty first, Okay, I the one that just came there.
Now you challenged me, and I'm gonna have to respond.
August twenty first is August twenty first is the beer

(01:52:54):
release date for the Mayor Maple val Or Mayor i
PA out of Georgetown Brewing will be doing the show
down there that day. Can't wait a time four to
five because there's a bunch of texts in there about
the storm ducking the storm controversy. Are we not surprising,
ducking it. I don't know. I've told you that was embarrassed.
I said in the headlines, say it again. What she
did was embarrassing, not just And I think both sides.

(01:53:19):
What the Brandy Cruz led group that had young people
holding signs and the small little protests before the game,
they're looking for a reaction, and then there's people inside
the arena that are looking for a fight. I think,

(01:53:40):
I think in this particular case, on Tuesday, it was
a Tuesday in the Storm game, Yes, Tuesday, right Tuesday
at the Storm game. I think you can look at
both sides and say be better. But more importantly Storm ownership,
and they, in all credit, they put the statement out
yesterday everyone's to be welcome here and all that. You

(01:54:02):
can't have it both ways, right, You cannot have it
both ways. You cannot say, you know, you cannot be
out there trumping your that's a bad term, sorry, pumping
up your own ideals and political beliefs and thoughts and
what you stand for, and then absolutely annihilate anybody who

(01:54:24):
has an opposing.

Speaker 5 (01:54:25):
View, especially when your whole thing is acceptance.

Speaker 2 (01:54:27):
Right, you cannot be accepting if you're unaccepting and they're
unaccepting of opposing views. You may not like those opposing views,
but don't say that you're open to all views and
everyone's welcome and all that. If they're not, and they
were not that day, whether they were there on for
the right reasons or wrong reasons, whoever bought the tickets.
Like I said, I think there's probably a little bit

(01:54:48):
of blame on both sides. But at the end of
the day, if you're the owner of a professional sports franchise,
you cannot behave that way, especially to young people, to teenagers.

Speaker 5 (01:54:59):
You cannot be behave out the future of your game.

Speaker 3 (01:55:01):
Right.

Speaker 2 (01:55:03):
You're chasing I think this league, more than any league ever,
chases fans away. They push fans away. Caitlin Clark has
been a massive, massive boost of this league financially and
every level. They're pushing her away. They're pushing her fans away,

(01:55:25):
and by doing that, you're hurting the future of the
game because there is no other player that's ever been
shown that they can carry the league. We're not saying
she's the best player in the league, but she's the
only one that has carried the league. So be better, WNBA.
I have zero faith you will be none whatsoever that

(01:55:45):
makes you happy for too fun. All right, we'll check
in with soft the nest. I can't hear you.

Speaker 4 (01:56:02):
Are you there?

Speaker 2 (01:56:03):
You got the Blue Angels in the background. Hear me?
Hello talking to me the blue I got the Blue Angels?
Can you hear me?

Speaker 11 (01:56:09):
You know, my son, I don't blame you for being surprised,
because apparently the idea that the blue Angels make a
lot of noise is a new revelation for a lot
of people in these parts.

Speaker 8 (01:56:18):
God, I saw a tweet.

Speaker 11 (01:56:22):
I don't know if the time, I mean, there was
a billboard down there on Rainier was it last year
or two years ago?

Speaker 6 (01:56:28):
Want?

Speaker 11 (01:56:28):
They want to get rid of them? And I can
hear him now. I love that sound. I think it
sounds awesome.

Speaker 2 (01:56:34):
It's the sound of summer in Seattle. Yeah.

Speaker 8 (01:56:36):
Hell, it's abso frecolutely man.

Speaker 2 (01:56:39):
But we need that this week.

Speaker 11 (01:56:40):
I saw a tweet. I saw tweet from Como, our
friends over at Como. And you know, I don't know
how they do things over the area. You know, It's
like writers always get mad when you blame you know, headlines.
I didn't write that. Okay, Well, whatever, it's got your
name on it, so blah blah blah. Right, but you know,
headline was like, you know, the Blue Angels will bring
you know, increased noise, and I was like, thanks sign
stuff right, like the sunset, the sun setting might increase

(01:57:03):
in darkness.

Speaker 8 (01:57:04):
I mean, like, what are we talking about here?

Speaker 11 (01:57:06):
When a range it gets wet well, and you know what, Like,
I'll admit my dogs hate it. My dogs hate the
fourth of July. My dogs hate the Blue Angels. But
you know, I'm not that arrogant to think that the
world should revolve around me and my pets. Okay, yeah,
I mean like what the hell, guys, come on, figure
it out for a couple hours a day over a
three day period. Figure it out, all right, Go get

(01:57:28):
some treasone from grandma's closet and feed it to your dog.

Speaker 2 (01:57:32):
It's fine. People that live, you know, in Mercer Island
and or you know the Rainier Beach area where the
Blue Angels are flying over that complain about noise with
the Blue Angels. They've been coming here since what the sixties,
you know, correct, right, So like pretty good chance you
bought your house after that. It's like the folks, Oh,
it's like honestly, it's like those the snobs out of Laurelhurst.

(01:57:52):
I can't believe that there's a helicopter landing at the
children's hospital. Oh, I don't know. You bought a house
next to children's hospital. You do.

Speaker 11 (01:58:01):
That's now been rectified apparently, Okay, I think that's a
that's an example of bad publicity is good publicity because
it made him change their mind on that. But I'm
with you, man, it's just I don't know, man, it's.

Speaker 2 (01:58:13):
A mound of summer. It's a sound of summer.

Speaker 11 (01:58:15):
People have just become so dramatic and so freaking soft
around these parts.

Speaker 8 (01:58:19):
That just drives me up a damn wall.

Speaker 2 (01:58:21):
By the way, I feel like I'm not so like
a golden.

Speaker 8 (01:58:23):
Cranky though at the same time, so it's a bad combination.

Speaker 2 (01:58:26):
I feel like I'm softy, I'm doing a show. Here's
nobody around.

Speaker 8 (01:58:29):
Yeah, welcome to my world.

Speaker 11 (01:58:30):
Man, You know how depressing that is to look up
and see nobody giving a damn on a daily basis.

Speaker 4 (01:58:35):
It's hard.

Speaker 2 (01:58:36):
Guys are out here doing fertilizers.

Speaker 8 (01:58:39):
Look at me, have they mowed the LAWNA?

Speaker 11 (01:58:41):
They come with an inches of your face with their
giant propeller lawnmowers.

Speaker 8 (01:58:45):
No, all right, because that happened two days ago.

Speaker 5 (01:58:47):
Man.

Speaker 2 (01:58:48):
Right now they're spraying what looks to be some sort
of fertilizer, and.

Speaker 11 (01:58:51):
Watch out for that because when the wind picks up
and gets in your eye and it stings badly.

Speaker 2 (01:58:56):
He's actually been very great.

Speaker 8 (01:58:57):
Look out.

Speaker 2 (01:58:59):
Ok, I'm good.

Speaker 8 (01:59:00):
You got a left over mask from COVID in the
bag or whatever, put it on.

Speaker 4 (01:59:03):
Put it on you.

Speaker 2 (01:59:05):
Hey, do you have any of those? By the way, now,
I found one in a drawer like in the and
I felt like a couple and I just immediately threw
them out, like I never want to see this thing again.

Speaker 11 (01:59:17):
First of all, for first of all, they're nasty, Yeah,
because I got all your saliva inside of them.

Speaker 8 (01:59:22):
Yeah, you know, food left over from whatever you were
eating that day.

Speaker 2 (01:59:26):
I think I found a pizza in there. Yeah.

Speaker 8 (01:59:28):
And then second of all, if you do need more masks,
then you know, you buy a mask.

Speaker 2 (01:59:32):
Hell, let's hope we never Jesus. This actually feels like
twenty twenty training camp when like there's on the top
of the burm. Yeah yeah, kind of no radio, just
stand on the berm and watch practice. Yeah, all right,
I'm that up all right, lifting uplifting. Nobody got today.

Speaker 8 (01:59:48):
We got a new sports gambling expert on the show
with us.

Speaker 4 (01:59:51):

down for the first time all year.

Speaker 8 (02:00:33):
